On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinero, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility. Listen to Solita on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this episode of Trendpah Smur. That one courtesy of Vanadium Silver, in reference to our conversation we had
Starting point is 00:02:23 on this morning's episode, I believe, about the top Papa's. We were ranking top popas in reference because we of course had Brandy Posy on
Starting point is 00:02:34 and love Brandy Brandy the great Brandy Posy was talking about her time on Warped Tour and noted that
Starting point is 00:02:45 Papa Roach still got the kids are still got it back into Papa Roach and so
Starting point is 00:02:54 we were ranking our top poppas. And before I even introduce you, Sophia Alexandra, today's special guest co-host, all right, let's just do that. We're thrilled to be joined by today's very special guest co-host,
Starting point is 00:03:08 a hilarious stand-up comedian who hosts 420 Day Fiance with some guy named Miles. It's Sophia Alexandra! So happy to be here. I am your so-so filling in for my mind. There it is. And you had some great pitches.
Starting point is 00:03:25 for our list of top popas. I think I'm forgetting some that we hit yesterday because we had Papa Smurf. We had, I think I said, thank you Vanadium Silver for that trend, Pah Smurf, short show title. Papa Smurf, Papa John, who, bottom of the list.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Dapa Roach, I said, Papa Smurf, Papa John. You had a really good pitch this month. Yeah, I said Mama's and the Pappas. Mamas and the Pappas. But then I was like, I think they were pretty shit, actually. Yeah, maybe. And the mom was in the popas?
Starting point is 00:04:00 Entirely possible. Wasn't one of them a rapist? Like, wasn't it one of them the Phillips guy? Possibly. It's entirely possible. Because then they're fighting for bottom spot with Papa John. Right. Then my other pitch was...
Starting point is 00:04:14 Papa shot. Yes. It was Papa shot. Papa shot. Because I'm really good at it because, as I said, my body type is referred to as Lady Slender Man. so I just stand far away and just put the ball right into the basket. And it's just injected a really great sound. Yeah, yeah, where you just like reach over and you're not,
Starting point is 00:04:37 you don't even pick up the balls. You're just hitting the little lever and the thing going ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, setting world records with your wingspan. Anyways. And my third one is pop and lock. Pop and lock. Yeah. It's a slant rhyme.
Starting point is 00:04:54 rhyme. It's a slant papa. It's fine. Give me yours. I think that's, I think we've covered all the papas that I know. There's, of course, the papa, which, you know, I have a good friend from Sweden, whose son calls him Papa, and I find that adorable. I love Papa. Papa is really cute.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Papa, like, if I had really thought it through, I would have taught my kids to call me Papa instead of my biological father, Jack O'Brien. But alas, I did not. Can I, is it too late to be your kids, Papa? You want to come in and be my, the Papa that stepped up? Yeah, the Papa that didn't have to stop stepping up because I was always there. That's how I'll pitch myself as I enter your children's lives. Who?
Starting point is 00:05:55 Papa Pia. You got your mama Mia, but what about Papa Pia? Papa Pia. Papa Pia. Anyways, this is what the show is now. My name is Jack O'Brien. You may address me as Papa. Papa, please.
Starting point is 00:06:12 I'm Papa, O'Brien. My friend Davy Kirsch, who's a really funny comedian in Portland, has this great bit about how she thinks that, like, she wishes she could go back in time to when her dad hit her because she knows how to get out of it now because like she's an adult and a stripper and she's like, I just know how to turn things around now and she's like, I would have just been like,
Starting point is 00:06:37 yeah, papa, yeah, that feels good, yeah. Yeah, daddy. She's like, he would quit right away. And I probably butchered it. And anyway, watch Davies. There you go. Watch that. Let's get into the news, shall we? That's what this episode's about in addition to ranking papas or papas.
Starting point is 00:07:03 We have the mainstream media continuing not to know what to do with this. Left wing surge of energy that's coming up out of the streets, racing over a obstacle course made of old couches to grab. This is a reference to an old surge commercial from the 90s that nobody's gonna remember except Miles. But and then they get the surge and they all and they scream, Surge. Anyways, that's what we're doing in the 90s. But yeah, so the mainstream media don't know what to do.
Starting point is 00:07:43 They're like, what the fuck is this? We got to throw some water on this shit. So Gail King had Angie Nixon on and she was like, so you've campaigned with Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Hassan Piker. Do you want to see them on the campaign trail with you? And Angie Nixon had to be like, what? No, that's, I haven't.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Hassan Piker is just somebody that you guys bring up repeatedly every time one of us wins an election. It's like a cool brown straw man that you love to drag out for situations like this, which have nothing to do with anything. So Hassan Piker, you've said you want to marry him and have his babies. Why do you love him so much? And in regards to what you're going to do about all of these kids that are about to lose snap benefits, would you say that Hassan Piker is the most,
Starting point is 00:08:46 responsible or like the mostest responsible what are we doing you saying top 10 top five most responsible um yeah and then she when she's like you don't i don't know i he he did not campaign with me she's like oh well um like would you she but like would you kiss him like if you like i heard you are kissing him what no i wasn't um Well, would you? It's like, what the fuck are you doing? You mean girl as political reporting. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:26 Yeah. So weird. It's like, are you reporting for the yearbook? Is that what this is? Real quick, would slash wouldn't on Tompiker. Thank you. Would you also say he has best eyes? Prince Harry and Megan Markle are reportedly,
Starting point is 00:09:46 we're losing them. California's losing them. The U.S. is losing them. They're reportedly moving back to the U.K. after living in California for six years and trading royal life for making a bunch of lame shit for Netflix life. I have to say I myself am outraged by the move. By them moving back? Yeah. Yeah, because I got no fewer than four breaking news. news alerts today. And when I checked, they were all about them moving back. I was like, you don't give me those when fucking mass shootings happen. Yeah. Why?
Starting point is 00:10:28 What is the agenda here? I actually got an Amber alert that they were like that he's absconding with Megan Markle, with our Megan. It was a push notification to my phone that went, um, I like don't know what they can do to like, stop being talked about, like they stop being royalty. They made shit TV just like everyone else who lives in Los Angeles.
Starting point is 00:10:55 I say is someone that is a Los Angeles resident that's made a lot of shit entertainment. That's right. It's what we do here. It's what we do. I'm saying you're one of us. Yeah. And you were blending in seamlessly by just being a normal LA piece of shit. So why would you go back to being.
Starting point is 00:11:15 what another person that already exists in that country? Yeah, I mean, I will say they're not any ordinary people. They're, I think, beyond the standard of living of our celebrities. Like, I think celebrity where life is like too hard for a royal. Like, royals are just like people who go through life having their ass wiped for them figuratively. So I do think it's like, man, the harsh reality of being a celebrity in Montecito, California is like... They're like, living on Tyler Perry's fucking gigantic estate has been really hard on us as a family.
Starting point is 00:12:03 Yes. A number of mega personalities, including Katie Miller and Megan Kelly tried to claim this is a win for Trump. They're like, they're fleeing Trump. I'm going to go ahead and say Harry is fleeing Miles because our nation is only big enough for one charismatic prince
Starting point is 00:12:21 born on September 15th, 1984. My God, that, you went a long way and you landed that plane. Thank you. I appreciate you so much.
Starting point is 00:12:33 That Miles and Prince Harry born on the same day for people who are going to call you. Who's that guy? Lindy, which is the one that landed the plane on the river? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:12:41 call me Lindy for my a long walk to a safe landing. No, it's just kind of the most charming thing to go such a long way to just call your co-host A prince. A charismatic prince. Yeah, it's just the cutest wind up for the cutest landing. But I was going to say, I think that they're moving back because King Charles has cancer. King Charles has cancer.
Starting point is 00:13:06 And I guess, like, secretly or something, Harry and him are friends or whatever. I don't know. Yeah. So this is... I could give two fucks, but I got four news alerts about it. It's a very normal news story, I think, is that somebody is moving home to be closer to their sick father, who is, you know, it probably doesn't have that much longer to live. And in England, in the UK, it is being called Project Thaw. and framed as a conspiracy theory where, like, there's a secret plot to repair Prince Harry's frosty relationship
Starting point is 00:13:49 with the rest of the royal family and with the British people. I mean, that's the whole thing. I don't think they would be moving back unless the king was dying. Right. Because, I mean, as much as people shit on them, like, even when they're here, like, in Britain, when they're in Britain, it's, like, insane. People have never hated a black woman more in that country than when she's around, you know. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:19 And that's saying something because, yeah, they're, we all know about the British. We all know about the British. Don't even get me started on those people as an Irish guy, you know. Yeah, it's a weird, it's a weird world. Yeah, like, they probably enjoyed being away from. Like, there is a profession of media personality called Royal Watcher. Yeah. Which I guess is like our paparazzi, but it's like their experts.
Starting point is 00:14:53 But just dedicated to them. Just dedicated to them, people who don't do anything. So they're just like having to interpret the smallest, you know, slites and, you know, just writing this fan fiction about people. who don't do anything is is kind of interesting. It's an admirable level of commitment to the bit with them and the royalty. Yeah, which I do feel like it's like a real choice. It's like those people that weren't sorry about like causing Britney's breakdown. Like they would do interviews with those paparazzi and they were like, I don't know, man. It seems like she deserved it. I don't think.
Starting point is 00:15:33 It's a living. What is wrong with you? There's so many weird, like there are people that I read a headline recently about how like there there are celebrities who have paparazzi that are like dedicated to them and they like go through their whole career with this same person and they have like a weird grudging respect. I want to say it was like Nicole Kidman maybe. Somebody who has had like a long accomplished career and has just like had the same basically professional stalker who's just like always there in the background. And they don't talk to each other, but it's almost like the movie Heat,
Starting point is 00:16:16 like a lifelong, like cat and mouse game. Totally. You know what I mean? And the weird thing from the point of view of like, the mindset of the professional stalker, right? You see them think that this is a relationship that is like a good one. In their head, they'll say stuff like,
Starting point is 00:16:38 oh yeah, I've watched Brittany grow up. I'm like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You've stalked her for 20 years. You didn't watch her grow up. You're not her fucking dad. Like, well, who is also a piece of shit. But the point is like, that weird thing where the parissocial connection to them is like, oh, no, we're in a voluntary thing.
Starting point is 00:16:58 And it's like, no, it's not sex. It's rape, brother. Right. It's one of those things that if you, like, just taken completely, out of context, it would seem like a weird sci-fi, like Black Mirror episode. Like, I live my life dedicated to this one famous person who we treat as a God and I am like their disciple against their will. They hate me. They would have me kill. If like no, there were no consequences, they would have me kill, but I just like kind of follow them around. And I've
Starting point is 00:17:30 learned their patterns. And so I know where to go. And then, yeah, it's very strange. Yeah. And I give psycho interviews like, Oh, yeah, no, their favorite foods are these. Yeah, yeah. Do I know them? No. Have I made them fear for their life as they're escaping with their baby? Uh, yeah. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:17:51 I've watched her grow up. I feel like imaginative historians of the future, like, will, will be interested, like, we'll write books about this and people will read it being like this. Who's such a weird culture? So strange. Very unhinged. don't understand. Let's take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:18:12 We'll be right back. Behind every night spent making the kids' lunches, there's a lot of suspense. Will they finally eat the veggies? Will the pesto survive the first bite? Will the lunchbox come home empty, half full, or come home at all? And will you finish episode eight

Starting point is 00:18:48 When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are the Survivor files. I just remember this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything. Every week I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced.
Starting point is 00:19:33 But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. There's stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to the Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If your bookshelf and your For You page are equally important to your personality, welcome home. This is Prose Society, the weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for thought daughters, pop culture obsessives, and anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. I'm Eli Rallo, and every week we're connecting the dots. between books, the internet, and the conversations everyone can't stop having.
Starting point is 00:20:14 I'm going to have to look up this story. I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. From best-selling authors and your favorite book talk creators to the latest pop culture moments, nothing is off the table. It's like if you can hide some real messages inside compelling characters, then that is a Trojan horse. Whether you're looking for literary deep dives, smart pop culture conversations, or a community of readers who love to think a little too much, you're in the right, place. Listen to Pro Society on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your
Starting point is 00:20:45 podcasts. See you between the pages. On the new podcast Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinero and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people, and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it.
Starting point is 00:21:29 It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your friends, first trip. I hope you listen to Solita on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. I guess who thought of a pop, another Papa? You thought another Papa? Yeah. And this one's pretty, it's pretty bad. Uh-oh. This one's almost, I mean, it's just a step above Papa John. Okay. It's the human papillomavirus. Barely above Papa John. I mean,
Starting point is 00:22:23 one of them causes cervical cancer, but the other one is Papa John. Well done. Well done. Our list grows and the list grows. Papa Hall of Fame. Did you watch the big debate last night between Netia Rahman and Karen
Starting point is 00:22:45 Bass. Did you know there was a debate on Wednesday night? I sure did not. Yeah. Know that or watch, but I was at a gay open mic. Okay. Well, that's fun. In my own way, I think I participated. You're not alone and having not watched it. The Zoom live stream, it was shown on Zoom live stream. That's how they decided to, you know, share it with the world, not television, Zoom live stream. And they were like, oh, we're at capacity. Like, it was a fucking, like, board meeting or some shit. And so then people, the only way to experience it was on radio.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Like, the debate for the mayor of the second largest city in the country was only broadcast on radio. And I do kind of like the vintage approach. We're taking to democracy. They're like, it's only available on vinyl. Right. Which would be worth buying because apparently Nithia Raman rinsed Karen Bass. Which this has not been her strong suit.
Starting point is 00:23:55 Like she has so many complicated thoughts in her brain and like, you know, she's like a policy wonk. And so sometimes she has trouble, I feel like speaking in concise, like, debate, worthy, you know, quips. It has nothing to with how good you're going to be at governing. It's just a matter of like, can I speak in sound bites? And she can because she's really smart and she like is like getting better at it. And it was according to the LA Times, the audience that came because it was like a, I think it was sponsored by the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association of person. So like a cursed organization.
Starting point is 00:24:42 and the audience was very heavily pro-bass at the start, and people were eventually like a play. It was like Rocky Four. People were like eventually like applauding for Nithia. And Karen Bass, like, was just coming off as a villain. Like she kept being like, well, that, yeah, whatever. That's you. You know, like, she just like couldn't come up with good talking about.
Starting point is 00:25:08 Those are her comebacks. They're like, yeah, well. Yeah. That's just like, opinion. She also like trashed taco vendors as like a thing. It's just like no feel for the pulse of L.A. So anyways, I wish this had been a little bit more professionally distributed, but
Starting point is 00:25:30 it does sound like, you know, things are moving in the right direction. And it also feels weirdly like the media doesn't give a fuck about this race because we haven't like gotten any polling. We just got that one fake poll that said that Karen Bass was like up by 12 points. And she was like, ha ha, on a roll, baby. And then it was like, oh, no, somebody made that up to scam Cal Sheet. So I don't know. I'm sure we'll start getting more attention.
Starting point is 00:26:00 I mean, LA is like such a small city and so like non-consequential. Like how many people. It doesn't matter. Who cares? Michael, how much could have banana cost $11? Exactly. How many people could possibly live in L.A.? Like, four?
Starting point is 00:26:13 Exactly. So what do they do there? It's like movies or something? Whatever. That place is... I mean, what's their GDP? Like, I don't know. The fifth in the world out of countries?
Starting point is 00:26:30 California, I mean, not Los Angeles. But I just mean, the idea that none of the shit matters is a wild one. But we should get four news. alerts about the Megan and Harry situation. I think that's... Thank you. Prush. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:44 Those news alerts were happening as this debate was like about to start by the way. So fucking stupid. Yeah, Brian the editor pointed out that from the debate, from her debate performance, you can tell Karen is in fact an asshole. And also noted this is neither here nor there or is it that her ex-husband's name is Jesus Lechuga, which I believe is Jesus lettuce. It is, in fact, Jesus lettuce, and that makes me giggle. That's a lot of fun.
Starting point is 00:27:17 It also has chug in it, which I'm sure all of the kids were like, oh, owned. Except where they would never say that, because owned us from 4,000 years ago. Jesus lettuce is also what I was saying after I fucking ate a Taco Bell the other day. You know what I'm saying? Jesus. Explosive diarrhea. I think it's time for another pop-up.
Starting point is 00:27:42 And I got one. I think it's time. You work on that while I tell the listeners about the fact that that Dune 3 tickets just went on sale on AMC. And they crashed the site. People went fucking nuts. This is weird to me. So this is like an IMAX 70-millimeter screen.
Starting point is 00:28:04 deal and those are still in short supply. Like this, I'm going to put IMAX theaters in the same boat as like doctors. You know how there's always, there's like not enough doctors for some reason. People are like, yeah, well, but that's just, that's how we do it. We only let this amount of people be doctors and that's who are our doctors.
Starting point is 00:28:27 I feel like IMAXs are similar. They're like, yeah, you'll have one IMAX theater per city. and then a bunch of lesser IMAX theaters that claim to be IMAX theaters but aren't really. So everybody's rushing to snap up the IMA 70 millimeter screenings, which is causing theater chain websites to crash. And AMC's CEO publicly apologized for the crash and announced that $2 million in IT costs have been approved in order to fully address the issue. I'd like to know if AI was involved. In crashing? Like if they just outsourced a bunch of the work that would have been done by people.
Starting point is 00:29:09 And now they have to actually... In terms of like running the website. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Maybe like me, like, what is it? Automated. Thank you. Automated some systems and maybe that shit is just not.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Because like I was hearing from a lot of my tech friends from after massive layoffs, then those companies are now hiring them back. Yeah, hiring people back. That's the... Sorry! We actually need you. So maybe that's what this is. The magical dance of AI.
Starting point is 00:29:38 Fire everybody and then hire fewer people back at worse rates and be like, sorry, we need you. But now you're more desperate. It is weird that people cannot stop pre-ordering shit. Like we were talking about this with Brian yesterday on Grand Theft Auto 6, like that everybody's pre-ordering that game, even though it's a purely digital purchase that, like, will not, it will be impossible to run out of that. Like this one, I guess I understand a little bit more. But why then? Why are they pre-ordering Grand Theft Auto 6?
Starting point is 00:30:16 Yeah, why, like, what is driving that impulse to pre-order, do you know? Just like culturally. A feeling of comfort in their heart that they have it. Oh, like a little dopamine rush that, like, yeah, yeah. I mean, people are so excited about that game. I feel like we're just going to have to have a week of episodes where we only talk about Grand Theft Auto 6 because that's all anybody's going to be doing for a week. But I will say. Did you pre-order it?
Starting point is 00:30:44 No, I've never played a video game. Like, I don't play it, but I might have to do this one. Oh, I don't know you've never, you're not a video game guy, Jack. I stopped playing at N64. I was like, this is. Me too. I'm not good at. So much time playing that for that Mario 64 game.
Starting point is 00:31:02 And I was just like, I feel bad. And I also have like an addictive personality. And so I was just like, I can't do this or else I'm going to just do this all the time. And so I stopped really playing video games for the most part. But this feels like, especially because I have an eight-year-old and a 10-year-old in my house, this feels like a good time to jump back in. That's actually, yeah, the perfect time. I hope they still have that thing where you get to shoot sex workers.
Starting point is 00:31:28 Yeah, I think that's kind of the eight-year-old's really going to love it. It's the whole thing. I will say that there is a trend of media companies being like, oh, no, we crashed our site. People are so into, our show's so good. People crash the site. There's so many people. It's like the equivalent of like having a front page news story showing long lines outside of your movie is like, what this is.
Starting point is 00:32:00 So, like, if you were to spend money to pay a small hacking collective to knock the site offline when the tickets went on sale, that would be money well spent, technically,
Starting point is 00:32:12 for, like, the Dune 3 marketing team, you know? Yeah. It's also furthering the concertification of movies because the number of IMAX tickets
Starting point is 00:32:23 are being listed online for hundreds of dollars. It's unclear if they're, like, actually selling at that price, but that's, people are trying to do two movie tickets, what we did to like sports and gaming TV, which is too stupid. It's such a fucking scourge, man. It sucks.
Starting point is 00:32:44 The resale market for like concert tickets and all that. It's so fucking, I hate it so much. Yeah. Just wait till dynamic pricing comes along and it's like, based on who you are and where you are right now. the time that you came to buy it. This ticket is $70. That's just, that's what we think. It'll be like, everything will be like airline tickets, you know, where it's just like,
