Starting point is 00:01:36 How do you feel about this, kids? Hi, I'm Akilah Hughes, and I'm so excited about my new podcast, Rebel Spirit, where I head back to my hometown in Kentucky and try to convince my high school to change their racist mascot, the Rebels, into something everyone in the South loves. The Biscuits. I was a lady rebel. Like, what does that even mean? It's right here in black and white and prints.
Starting point is 00:01:58 It's bigger than a flag or mascot. Listen to Rebel Spirit on the iHeartRadio app, radio app apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts hello the internet and welcome to this episode of trendster that short show name is courtesy of you guessed it johnny davis johnny davis johnny davis yeah done it again the devil the myth the legend the devil he said that was based on your favorite social media site. The Defunct Friendster. I think it launched right as I was graduating high school when that came out.
Starting point is 00:02:35 And I didn't realize, I look into it now. Now it's sold in 2015 and became a social gaming site based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Hell yeah. All right. All right. Well, for the next 15 minutes, you will hear us playing the social media games on Trendster.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Unfortunately, that is now a defunct gaming site, or closed gaming. Oh, it didn't? Friendster is gone, basically. Yeah, RIP. That's interesting. That would be, like, an interesting, just to, like like follow that domain
Starting point is 00:03:05 name like just every step along the way of like who bought it who sold it and it's like watching a whale carcass fall to the bottom of the ocean and be devoured by eels i wow that's an interesting i think you're developing a podcast right now like when dot well carcass when dot com carcasses settle the bottom of the ocean floor who then picks apart like what happened in like those months right after pets.com fully collapsed like that's what i'm i think that's a part we don't talk about let's talk about the fall but i want to know like about the absolute mess afterwards and i'm sure it's probably rife with tragedy financially but yeah and i bet there's a few legends of the fall that you find out about, you know. Tony Hopkins over here.
Starting point is 00:03:55 Let's talk about why Jeff Goldblum is trending. This video is wild. So Christy Yamaguchi-Main, a.k. main aka maestro uh tweeted the video and was like man steven merchant whoops joe exotics ex-husband's ass and i've i literally that's they look so much like that's what i was like why are they fighting that's so strange guys what would they do this guy's calmed down yeah most of the fight video yeah most of the internet decided to bestow the label of uh jeff goldblum that's that one seemed to hit critical mass because that's the name that's trending and in it it's just this street fight of again a shirtless guy who looks like uh joe exotics toothless
Starting point is 00:04:42 husband now with the teeth um and he's squaring up to this lanky guy wearing like a all black outfit looking like steve like he's like really into steve jobs or something and yeah yeah dude they start scrapping this jeff goldblum guy starts bringing out like kicks and all kinds of like this motherfucker could hit him with a spinning kick it was really using his range yeah pretty wild i think yeah great great uh you know for anyone interested in self-defense you know you don't necessarily have to be the meatiest guy if you know how to use your long limbs as he did he kept distance between this combatant and then i mean he gave him a just absolute savage rib kick at the end
Starting point is 00:05:23 i don't know what is going on here but who knows yeah it's interesting it's like it's street fights can go in a number of different ways they're all ugly and horrifying to watch what one of them is like people just fall on the ground and they're just wrestling around a lot and yeah uh this is one of the ones that like stays upright and the guy like one guy kicks the other guy's ass and the other guy just calls timeout. Yeah, because he's just like not used to getting punched in the face. And he's like, wait, timeout. The second other guys like you could tell because Jeff Goldblum, he's he's first.
Starting point is 00:05:58 He was fighting with a right handed stance and then he switches to southpaw. Yeah, that's when you're like get and also when he when he squared up he had the pinky out on his jabbing hand like he was fucking bruce lee or some shit i'm like oh wow and again credit to him i mean anybody who's taken any kind of martial arts he most people begin to respond like the second someone starts throwing a punch or a kick and that's usually how you begin counter punching or kicking and he just ate the first couple things that this dude was throwing at him he's like nah dude you're you're mismatched you're in jurassic park now and i'm about to show you chaos theory all over your fucking head nature finds a way and so do these hands it's just a weird
Starting point is 00:06:41 i can only imagine the stress all of these people in this video. I think that's the subtext of this. I think people are even more stressed right now, too. I mean, it was originally tweeted by somebody who was like, yo, my neighbors just fought. Like, so he knew he knew them both and was like, damn, this is just going down. Yeah. On the streets of Richmond, Virginia, both men declined to press charges. Oh, I think because I think maybe it felt like a fair one. Yeah, on the streets of Richmond, Virginia, both men declined to press charges. Aw, that was nice of them.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Because I think maybe it felt like a fair one. You know, Jeff Goldblum didn't like stomp him out at the end. I mean, clearly John Tiger King's ex-husband had given up, and Jeff Goldblum went for the cheeky side rib kick again one last time just to let him know, and that's what you get for playing with me. But it seemed like a fair one. Yeah, it did.
Starting point is 00:07:27 And that one really seemed like he kind of had a... I've never seen a wince be so visibly in somebody's gate. His gate was wincing as he walked away. He was like, oh, God. Anyway. So shout out to that dude. Just some aggro shit for some bros to bro out on that's right that's right speaking of aggro shit uh another three people are not responding favorably to this uh la county health supervisor barbara farrer has said that shelter in place is going to be extended uh
Starting point is 00:08:07 quote with all certainty for three more months um yeah my friends from not la are talking shit like i'm going golfing tomorrow bro um sorry like i don't golf our death toll hasn't gone down uh you're like i'm sorry golfing is immoral uh you're like right the the like whole thing is like yeah just especially in la i mean this is la county like the deaths haven't declined the cases aren't like we're not out of the woods yet although we flattened the curve we're just not out of we're not on a decline yet and 95 percent of the counties in the state are not even close to meeting governor newsom's sort of guidelines for this but it's interesting to see like when i saw that on twitter i'm like what's going on like another three kept and i was
Starting point is 00:08:54 like okay what is this and it's interesting to see how like people clearly like now that the right wing echo chamber chimes in like oh poor cal i mean i'd say i feel bad for californians but those are the idiots who picked newsome to even be their governor so they got what they deserve and it's like no this isn't a this isn't because newsome is our nasty babysitter who's like no no tv right scientifically no dessert for another three nights that are not number that we're talking about is what the transmission rate could possibly be from one person to another is not at zero yet it's not at that below one person number yet so this is what has to happen this is just unfortunately this is what we're dealing with to keep people as safe as possible because we don't want to put everyone else at risk not
Starting point is 00:09:40 even not to say that garcetti's doing the best job with the vulnerable, unhoused community here. But things are moving, though. There is the thing that's called Operation Turnkey, where they're going to begin actually just seizing a lot of motels and things to be able to put people in those rooms. But there's a lot of friction. Yeah, it's tough. But it's, I don't know. It doesn't make me, doesn't change my politics, just as I'm sure the completely botched job that their president and one of their governors is doing
Starting point is 00:10:17 is not changing their politics for whatever reason. No, and even what's funny is like, even the Californians who I know who, you know, there are people in my orbit, family members, extended people who I know voted for Trump and very much fit into like the California Republican mindset. They like to, you know, obviously want to see like white people on top, but they're not quite at the level of like they see that there's still a risk for themselves, too, as older people.
Starting point is 00:10:43 And they're kind of like, I'm curious to see what that spread is even like within California Republicans. Because clearly, in tomorrow's episode, we're talking about what the approval ratings are for governors. And it seems like most people appreciate a bit of caution when it comes to this whole thing. Yeah. thing yeah also trump is previewing his what how he's going to uh respond if he loses by being like it's a hoax about uh what one one of the states recently had its primary and his response to the to the voting to the results was that it was a hoax so yeah uh we are gonna have to drag him kicking and screaming out of the white house if uh people are able to defeat him could you i mean yeah yeah anyway i don't want to i don't want to begin to go down that hypothetical trail at this point
Starting point is 00:11:38 yeah yeah i'm just gonna focus on these next three months, basically. Yes. And continue to forge our connection over Zoom. Yeah. I'm going to try and go just like get prison ripped over the next. There you go. Just like get shredded. Just do burpees all day. All body weight exercises. Pull up bar burpees.
Starting point is 00:12:01 And you're like, oh. And Mike Jack, you really neglected your legs, though. Those quads are looking a little thin. Just completely. So top heavy. Two sticks. Meatball on a couple of chopsticks. Brian Adams is trending.
Starting point is 00:12:19 And you know it's not going to be good. I always have a bad taste in my mouth from Bryan Adams because, and that's unfortunate wording because of what I'm about to say, because of his explanation for his song Summer is 69. He's like, yeah, dude, it was a joke the whole time. Do you get it? Oh, really? Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:42 He's like, we were talking about the 69. And yeah. All right. So he's like kind of a Canadian edgelord. A douchey dude. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Yeah, well, he really, he went to the edge and over the edge of racism when he just tweeted some shit where he tweeted this.
Starting point is 00:13:00 As Fox News says, expletive ladenen, I would say racist, tirade. He said, quote, Tonight was supposed to be the beginning of a tendency of gigs at the Royal Albert Hall, but thanks to some fucking bat-eating, wet-market, animal-selling, virus-making, greedy bastards, the whole world is now on hold, not to mention the thousands that have suffered
Starting point is 00:13:19 or died from the virus. And then he went on to say his message to those is to them thanks a fucking lot and go vegan um so everyone was like oh you're really going down the uh like anti-asian blame asian people for coronavirus and make this like a chinese whatever the thing because we're already right we've already spoken about how the amount of uh incidents like racial incidents involving asian americans and asians around the world is going up because there are people who say shit like who say things like this uh that are meant to assign blame for something like this and it's bad so he's come back and said uh sorry about that yes good he's apologized he also tweeted alongside his uh video a video of
Starting point is 00:14:09 him performing his song cuts like a knife uh so you know in case you were uh not taking his opinion with the proper gravity he uh he presented it with a piece of his timeless genius. Yeah, and he did say he wants to make clear in his apology, he says, apologies to any and all that took offense to my posting yesterday. True classic apology. He feels sorry for you because you- That you can't handle my edge.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Yeah. He says, no excuse- That that happened in your mind. Yeah. No excuse, I think think is the closest he comes to apologizing aside from saying apologies if you're offended i just wanted to have a rant about the horrible animal cruelty in these wet markets being the possible source of the virus and promote veganism i love i have love for all people and my thoughts are with everyone dealing
Starting point is 00:14:58 with this pandemic okay so nice try buddy but let's be real you everybody knows you from being on the soundtrack of robin hood or zoro uh and yeah one of your best songs uh got flipped by dj sammy and yanu baby it's hard to believe that you're lying here in my arms the edm version of heaven very influential i feel like that song's very influential in like modern music, even though I feel like I've heard that song's like melody in hip hop tracks. I mean, you can't deny that the Heaven, that melody goes, that goes somewhere.
Starting point is 00:15:38 Oh, it goes hard. Yeah. A lot of his songs do. He just, he sucks. Yeah. I mean, those are hits because like, Have you ever really, ever really loved a woman?
Starting point is 00:15:48 You love a woman. You 69 in a Honda. Or whatever the lyrics are. But like, great. I, again, don't need Brian Adams. I just need the DJ Sammy version of Heaven. Thank you for that contribution. And then finally,
Starting point is 00:16:04 we got Tony Hawk hawk trending yeah uh which i don't have to tell you why man uh it's it's the thps uh because one and two thps are being remastered dude the shorthand for tony hawk pro skater dude hell yeah you know it dude i mean i think we've talked about this tony hawk 2 is probably one of the few games that nearly most people have played like the tony right people have experienced that i mean i know you're all in on switch now but if you could take a second to get off that switch and switch to tony hawk whilst in a switch stance on a skateboard well did that oh hell yeah dude yeah i think this it's just like very,
Starting point is 00:16:46 it's one of the top games of all time. And then they're taking the first two games of Tony Hawk and completely like making it in 4K. And they're bringing back like all the levels are the exact same, like with the school bus in that first like warehouse level. Everything's like the exact same, just in beautiful graphics.
Starting point is 00:17:04 Most of the soundtrack is still the same although they did admit has some licensing issues as i mean the soundtrack was great wasn't it yeah yeah it had all and it was a really good uh like pop punk yeah have pop punk there was hip hop there was everything yeah yeah hell yeah all right well shout out to tony hawk i wonder like is he just is he like jordan is he just making more money now off of like licensing oh yeah like that than he ever did in his career his life completely changed after i mean he was obviously respected and he was like the first documented 900 or whatever but like once that game came out it just like it blew open and then
Starting point is 00:17:46 tony hawk just became a brand like i think that's what it does it's just like you go beyond just the guy you become the jump man or the dude busting a 900 in a vert pipe oh you took the words out of my mouth bro uh all right well guys that is what's trending on this fine Tuesday afternoon we hope you guys are being safe staying home washing your hands being kind to each other we will be back tomorrow with a whole other podcast and we'll talk to you then
