Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Keri Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game. Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's basketball. And on this new season, we'll cover all things sports and culture. Listen to Naked Sports on the Black Effect Podcast Network, iHeartRadio apps, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:57 The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by Diet Coke. Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this episode of Trendy Thing Trendy Where All Zeit Wants. There it is. The Mouthful. That is courtesy of Fighter of the Nightmans. I am Jack. You are Miles. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:15 And here is what is trending. The mass shootings in Buffalo and Orange County are both trending. First one. I mean, yeah. Well, white supremacist terror attack. You know, someone driving hours to target a black neighborhood in Buffalo, you know, has all the trappings of white supremacist terror. We'll talk about that more tomorrow's show.
Starting point is 00:02:42 And then I know in Orange County, there was another shooting where I believe someone's hatred of the Taiwanese community. Yeah. Motivated that shooting. So, yeah, just, you know, I mean, the shootings never go away. And, yeah, we find ourselves increasingly, I don't know, more confused as to what to do about it. But no one does anything about it yeah so yeah i mean we talk about a little bit tomorrow but the i think the the fact that there's the status quo group political party that doesn't really say anything that resembles or like resonates with people and then there's the fascist and it just unless things change you know that i don't know it's
Starting point is 00:03:34 like i was looking up father coughlin this morning the like 1930s catholic priest who used his radio broadcast to launch a giant wave of fascism in the US in the lead up to World War II. And the only thing that stopped him is World War II. And they were like, alright, fuck all this. This person
Starting point is 00:04:00 is clearly pro-Nazi. And the FDR administration forced the cancellation of his program. And then nobody really thought about him again because they were too busy fighting World War II. But yeah, I don't know. Just the idea that they would intervene to like shut down a tucker carlson or you know the people who are espousing the uh replacement theory as as being called uh is you know it seems just completely
Starting point is 00:04:36 out of the bounds of our current reality and the current way things go is like it starts with something like the tiki torches and now we have a like academic sounding word for it the replacement series thing all right so yeah we'll dig into it more but it's uh not great uh nah just disheartening you know it's the same same thing over and over and like it's like so wild. The news like on, uh, for CNN or MSNBC, they had like this extremist research Ron. It was like, yeah, you can tell like just with how social media is going on, how sticky the two are together. And, and you can tell when there's like an uptick on this activity, it coincides with a lot of like real world violence. And this person got out a few statistics
Starting point is 00:05:25 that were really interesting. And they're like, yeah, thank you so much for that. All right, moving on. We're going to talk to a politician who's telling us what they're doing about the midterms. And you're like, why don't you let the fucking expert allow people to learn a little bit more about how all of this shit ties together.
Starting point is 00:05:42 But it was just immediately, like something of substance was being said and it was swapped out. And moving on. Yeah. Neil deGrasse Tyson was out here with a tweet. I guess there was a lunar eclipse over the weekend. And Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted,
Starting point is 00:06:01 lunar eclipses are so unspectacular that if nobody told you what was happening to the moon, you'd probably not notice it at all. Just saying. Tell that to people who really fuck with the moon. They know. They know. Did you see the eclipse yesterday?
Starting point is 00:06:18 No. You noticed it, even though nobody told you? Okay, somebody told me. Okay on friday i heard there was something like that then i then i looked outside and you know like with my eyesight i was like let me see maybe i can see the man on the moon from down here on earth and i was like something's going on oh that's right it's an eclipse but to my eyes i was like oh it's just in one of those faces like it was how i saw it, so it didn't quite connect.
Starting point is 00:06:47 That's my lunar ignorance. To his point, there's nights where I don't see the moon at all. If nobody told me that, well, the moon is up there right now. It's just being obscured. I probably wouldn't notice it.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Give us something to replace it with. What should we be know give us something give us something to replace it with what should we what should we be getting excited about give us something to replace it with yeah like i don't know other than just being like stuff you guys care about is lame anyways i liked radiohead before now too many people like them screw you guys right and without like being like here's something that you might like equally that will also fire your imagination and make you excited about science all right uh nba playoffs two game sevens on sunday truly wild um so you know the the boston celtics knocked out the defending champion milwaukee bucks and yannis uh became the first player ever to have 200 points 100 rebounds and 50 assists in a single
Starting point is 00:07:57 series um and was just wildly impressive the whole time but the third best player on his team was out and injured and it was a strategically significant player because they didn't have enough shooting to compete with the boston celta he couldn't do enough though couldn't he as much as hard as he tried and then the phoenix suns who yeah when you listen to basketball podcasts lesser basketball podcasts that aren't miles and jack got mad boost you you would hear people who know basketball really well be like the suns are like marching like they're not just going to make it to the finals they are like i would be surprised if they lost more than one game in any of the series on their way to the finals. Well, they got to game seven of a series with the Dallas Mavericks,
Starting point is 00:08:54 who not a lot of people were talking about heading into the playoffs, and they got beat so bad. It was very unexpected. bad and so it's like it was very unexpected very um they like at one point they were just stuck on 27 points for like a half hour i didn't understand what was happening but this is this is the luca sans this is uh luca don't reach villainy yeah Yeah. Tell me, cause I wasn't, you know, I'm like checking in with a score and then going back to, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:29 answering absolutely insane questions from four year olds. But dude, this dude, the buckets are just coming so easy that he just started laughing. Like after just an easy, he's like, how about this little, let me give you a little contact.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Step back. Boom. Like walking down the court. Like he told himself like the best joke of the fucking year. He was smiling ear to ear. Yeah. So many photographs. Like my God.
Starting point is 00:10:02 In their face. Yeah. And I mean, that was the thing, you because cp3 and and and booker were definitely doing given their laughs too um but you know they got the luca special so this could be i think a lot of nba heads have been saying that Luka is ascendant. Luka is going to be one of the best players in the league for a long time, and this could be that moment where suddenly he's in the finals. He's up against the Golden State Warriors next. This is a very exciting Final Four. The Final Four is
Starting point is 00:10:44 Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, the don't know, an exciting Final Four. The Final Four is Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, the Golden State Warriors, and the Dallas Mavericks. And I'm pumped. I'm pumped, man. It's going to be good. And then Jeff Bezos is trending because, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:10:58 he paid to be. We'll see. But he's out here tweeting hot takes like he's been watching Elon Musk with a pit in his stomach. Like, how do it? Right. And so his debut is a like weird,
Starting point is 00:11:13 like takedown of the Biden administration. And, you know, making a claim like everybody knows rich people don't cause inflation. And people are like, uh-huh uh-huh sure sure you can't just like be all casual with one tweet and people are like he's he's a genius and we trust him now they're like dude you suck yeah you know what dude you suck that's all i he needs to hear that more i feel like i'm just gonna like i need to become like a like a self-esteem assassin for billionaires like i get real
Starting point is 00:11:52 close and then i just turn up on them and i'm like hey bro i've been lying this whole time you're full of shit actually dude and you're disgusting guru but yeah but silicon valley yeah exactly they're like but i told you all those things like i thought we knew each other like no bro i'm this is a test it's a test and you're testing me and you fucking suck dude what yeah bro you suck i'm out man sorry not your friend bro and nobody likes you hate to tell this to you everybody hates you and nobody's willing to say it just because you're rich okay i gotta go there there's also a headline that no longer just content with you know burning man now uh psychedelics and psychedelic gurus are going to davos um so that is uh both very interesting and
Starting point is 00:12:41 maybe too depressing but uh i don't know somebody needs to go undercover as like a psychedelic guru and like watch these people trip. And just really just, yeah. But like, yeah. And I'm, but I'm going to like get in their heads and be like, remember the time that you ruined those people's lives. They're like, oh, oh, go like full Batman and with the fear gas on. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Then I'm like, yeah, yeah. And like like i got a dreadlock wig on to look trippier and i'm like yeah man we're good we're gonna figure this out man like honestly like i get there's such there's such you're fighting such
Starting point is 00:13:14 headwinds man as a billionaire like let's just let's turn those headwinds into tailwinds man hey that's yeah i i feel like this could be done somebody needs to do it this is a okay look that's yeah i i feel like this could be done somebody needs to do it this is a okay look that's a free script for somebody okay that's on the blacklist for sure yeah um all right let's take a quick break we'll be right back i'm jess casaveto executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church. And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and L.A.-based Shekinah Church, an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades.
Starting point is 00:14:04 LA-based Shekinah Church, an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling firsthand accounts, the series will illuminate untold and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration. It's a vital revelation aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Starting point is 00:14:40 Hey, I'm Gianna Pradente. And I'm Jemay Jackson-Gadsden. We're the hosts of Let's Talk Offline, a new podcast from LinkedIn News and iHeart Podcasts. Girl, yes. Each week, we answer your unfiltered work questions.
Starting point is 00:15:05 Think of us as your work besties you can turn to for advice. And if we don't know the answer, we bring in experts who do, like resume specialist Morgan Saner. The only difference between the person who doesn't get the job and the person who gets the job is usually who applies. Yeah, I think a lot about that quote. What is it, like you miss 100% of the shots you never take? Yeah, rejection is scary, but it's better than you rejecting yourself. Together, we'll share what it really
Starting point is 00:15:29 takes to thrive in the early years of your career without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Keri Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports, where we live at the intersection of sports and culture. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball
Starting point is 00:15:58 just because of one single game. Every great player needs a foil. I ain't really hear them voice. I just come here to play basketball every single day, and that's what I focus on. From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Angel Reese is a joy to watch.
Starting point is 00:16:14 She is unapologetically black. I love her. What exactly ignited this fire? Why has it been so good for the game? And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained? This game is only going to get better because the talent is getting better. This new season will cover all things sports and culture. Listen to Naked Sports on the Black Effect Podcast Network,
Starting point is 00:16:35 iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by Diet Coke. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today. And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate
Starting point is 00:17:10 a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. or wherever you get your podcasts. And we're back. And there will be a hearing in Congress for the first time in 50 years that will discuss UFOs and extraterrestrial life. So that's happening. Cool.
Starting point is 00:18:01 We'll see. There's a UFO expert according to the Sun. It's the guy from Ancient Aliens. Right. They are turned up. They're saying, this is a big fucking deal. This is what the people in UFO Twitter have been asking
Starting point is 00:18:17 for. UFO transparency. I would just caution that we think they were issuing a report that was specifically designed to offer UFO transparency and didn't happen. So I doubt it's going to happen on the floor of Congress in conversation other than people saying very common sense things about, we got to figure out what these freaking things are. Am I right? Spooky, huh?
Starting point is 00:18:41 Spooky little fuckers. Yeah. All right. Am I right? Spooky, huh? Spooky little fuckers. Yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:18:51 All right. Portola. Yeah. Portola. Portola is trending. It's a new, from the people who brought you Coachella, they said, San Francisco, you need a new music festival. And it's a reference to the Portola Festival. I think that happened like right
Starting point is 00:19:05 after the terrible earthquake like in 1906 so there's like there's a festival after it was rebuilt in 1909 i think that's what the reference is to um but it's like you know pretty standard uh festival fair when you look at the lineups but definitely more on the like dj electronic side you know like flume k trinada jamie xx but then you have people like jungle uh mia toro y moi james blake the chemical brothers fortet i'm like this sounds like my ipod from like 2011 right so sure uh but yeah that's a you, big, big lineup. DJ Shadow too. The Bay Area is very young. So, yeah. Yeah. In researching the guy who founded Coachella
Starting point is 00:19:51 and this New Yorker writer followed him around while he was trying to do some... It wasn't Stagecoach. It wasn't Coachella. It was some classic rock version of Coachella. But one thing that he said was like people expect you to come with like immaculate
Starting point is 00:20:10 sound now because they've been just listening to DJs for so long and DJs just show up and like press play and then everybody you know. And so just feels like they're looking for opportunities to do that. Doesn't San that already have
Starting point is 00:20:25 like a one of the best outdoor music festivals like i love outside lands yeah it's huge um and golden gate park is beautiful and you know i mean like all things it ends up being like a cool like sort of smaller thing gets bigger and bigger and then it's like welcome to corporate weed town in the outside lands festival um but i think just in general you know like these acts like electronic acts they just i don't know i think because so many people like are like yeah dude we're gonna fucking party and listen to fucking flume you know and i think that's like replaced like following the grateful dead around is like doing doing Molly like at a Jamie XX show or something. Right, right.
Starting point is 00:21:07 But yeah, I mean, I get it. The way that most people take in their music now, like you see a lot of live bands and you can count on your hand the ones that sound like super great live or like the album. But that's also the fun of it because sometimes artists offer you a completely different experience when they're live.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Yeah. And finally, CSTO is trending yeah collective security treaty organization which is russia's military alliance including belarus armenia kazakhstan kyrgyzstan and tajikistan yeah they and apparently it it's just like Lukashenko from Belarus just yelling at everybody else. Like, guys, we should have united against the West to protect Russia. And it just felt like, oh, this is all performative for Vladimir Putin and the news
Starting point is 00:21:59 to try and create some sense of like, you know, we're on the same page to get absolutely involved in an armed conflict that is going terribly for the strongest of the nations in this alliance right yeah i'm sure that inspired a lot of people to be like we need to go to their aid also this isn't really a strong alliance it turns out but yeah this is like it's just a lot of you know lukashenko saying stuff it's like followers of the nazis are obsessed with the idea of revenge but they are not ready to fight openly against the heirs of the soviet people huh okay so you know just is this the timeline is this a similar timeline or did the US, before they invaded Iraq,
Starting point is 00:22:45 twist everybody's arm until they would agree that they were the Coalition of the Willing? That was what they named that, right? The Coalition of the Willing? That's branding. That's the worst branding. Coalition of the begrudging other nations that were like, fuck you, dude.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Really? You're going to call it on this? Article 5, I'm calling it. Right now, calling it. Article 5. It's like, dude, oh, fuck. But it's interesting that this is happening after things are
Starting point is 00:23:20 bogged down. I don't know. Maybe that's what happened in Iraq. I don't remember. Alright. are like bogged down i don't know maybe that's what happened in iraq i don't don't remember yeah um all right well those i mean it's so chaotic because i mean at this point it's like we're just we're dealing with the aftermath of that terrible terrible fucking operation or invasion yeah uh that now it's like i don't know man it was so fucked up and they lied the whole time on the way there it's that's what I'll that's what I'll tell my that my grandchildren
Starting point is 00:23:48 were in the desert wastelands of what used to be Topanga Canyon right alright well those are some of the things that are trending on this Monday afternoon we are back tomorrow with a whole episode of the show until
Starting point is 00:24:04 then be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to you all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. I'm Carrie Champion, and this is season four of Naked Sports. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry. Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. Every great player needs a foil.
