Starting point is 00:02:15 Yeah. Hey, I'm Jack, and that is, of course, super producer Anna Hosnier! What's up? Hi. Hi. Hi. How are you? I'm great. And I'm Anna.
Starting point is 00:02:31 It's great to have you back on the show. Great to be back on mic with you. Truly a pleasure, a privilege to be recording with you on this Friday. TJF, am I right? Yeah. TJF. Cool. first week back man oh oh yeah you were in the grind guate uh yeah i was in guatemala and and let me tell you the first few days back you had strong went to guatemala energy yeah you were like so good i was like being too friendly i didn't have that much energy i was just happy to see you guys you yeah you took me being happy to see you and uh your
Starting point is 00:03:13 production team as me being like like god is good i joined a cult god is good y'all god man you had god is good energy and i was, what's wrong with you? Normally you come in like, hey, what's up? What can I do for you? And I'm like, wow. Crushed into a fine powder. Anyways, it's Friday. It is also Jackie Robinson Day,
Starting point is 00:03:38 which is when Major League Baseball teams celebrate Jackie Robinson, number 42. And it is a special Jackie Robinson day because on April 15th, 1947, 75 years ago, Jackie Robinson made his Major League debut in Brooklyn, breaking baseball's color barrier. And it's wild that it took that long. I feel like that, you know, every aspect of the story where it's like, man, so brave and like amazing and courageous is also like, I don't know, Major League Baseball should be really fucking ashamed. Thoughts on a...
Starting point is 00:04:24 About Jackie Robinson? Yeah. Fan? You know, I'm not really a huge fan of baseball. But, you know, Jackie Robinson seems like a cool figure in pop culture history. There we go. Well, speaking of cool figures in pop culture history, who did you take?
Starting point is 00:04:45 All right. We didn't know which way we were going to take this story. So super producer Becca came through and was like, hey, the thing you confidently proclaimed on yesterday's trending episode that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky broke up is wrong. I think she said, were you just making that up jack um because i came in hot with that uh little piece of goss so i i had a choice to make at first i was like becca
Starting point is 00:05:14 you need to kill this story you need to get to page six make sure that they stop saying that it's false uh because i look like a fool right now, but quickly realized the damage had been done. So I have to just come here hat in hand and let everyone know that, you know, like many people on Twitter, we got got. We fell for it. It was just a tweet from somebody un unverified okay not that they're
Starting point is 00:05:47 not verified but the tweet like nobody had fact checked it basically i was suspect of this yesterday because i googled it and nothing came up in the section of google and i was like i don't understand where this news is coming from yeah then there were a ton of tweets about it with no verified sources so part of me was kind of like okay but i let you guys run with it because um i'm checked out sometimes the kids have to learn their lesson you know that's why i was just like i don't know they seem they seem like they're having so much fun that i don't want to like you know yeah kill their buzz even though they're clearly uh completely uh destroying any journalistic integrity they've ever even considered themselves to have. But you know what?
Starting point is 00:06:28 That's on you. Fortunately, while I may have considered myself to have some, nobody else has made that mistake. So I don't think this changes much for how other people think of me. But I am going to have to take off my derby cap with a little press card in it and put a question mark after the word press uh for at least press press um media
Starting point is 00:06:52 what so what do we learn thursday afternoon it was fashion writer lewis pisano tweeted that they have split rihanna broke up with him after she caught him cheating with shoe designer i mean uh can i just say yes if i was rihanna's shoe designer i would not hurt my chances of working with rihanna by hooking up with asap rocky yeah we all know who the prize is in that relationship yeah i'm not gonna look at the two of them and be like, now who do I want? No, no, no. The answer is Rihanna, period. You know who I want to fuck over? Rihanna.
Starting point is 00:07:30 I don't want, yeah. You know who I want the wrath of? One of the most powerful women on earth. And also probably should have read a little bit more carefully because I don't, these stories where they walk in and the person is cheating, usually, I don't, these stories where they walk in and the person is cheating, usually, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:07:50 I feel like that doesn't happen that often, right? Like someone just walks in on someone. I feel like you catch them in the, there's text messages or whatever. But yeah, just smooching in the coat closet or something it feels like it's like from a 1940s movie and not yeah yeah or just like the 90s when people like had no sense remember the 90s when people had no sense and uh doors didn't have locks and everything was just a free-for-all and you could enter anyone's home and no one was smart enough to take their cheating outside the home yes yeah and everyone had a pie uh cooling on their open window frame and so you
Starting point is 00:08:31 could like hear stuff through the open window frame uh but sometimes the pie would smell so good it would lift you off the ground right the little mice and creatures of the neighborhood were all like floating towards your pie with her incredible era what a time to be alive um anyways uh we just have to apologize to the couple that that's i don't have to apologize i didn't perpetuate this i'ma apologize to rihanna you need to apologize to rihanna. Someone call Miles. Get him in the room. We first heard from Rihanna. She was like, it's not true. And then we noticed that Page Six was also taking
Starting point is 00:09:12 it back. And then I realized it was too late to contain our lie. So anyways, sorry to Rihanna and ASAP. Barbie movie is trending. I've known that there have been many various$AP. Barbie movie is trending. I've known that there have been many various attempts at a Barbie movie.
Starting point is 00:09:28 I did not know how seriously they were taking it this time. There is a Barbie movie coming or in development, but seems like it's got a lot of momentum. It is going to be directed by Greta Gerwig, co-written by Greta Gerwig
Starting point is 00:09:43 and Noah Baumbach. Two, in my opinion opinion pop culture mavens that's what you were saying before we started recording I said Noah Baumbach now I love to see a Noah Baumbach mumblecore Barbie film it's all good I do like
Starting point is 00:10:02 squid and the whale because I am 41 and white yeah it's gonna be like super mumblecore Barbie though so it is starring two-time Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling as
Starting point is 00:10:17 Ken opposite Marco Robbie as Barbie great casting truly great casting. Uh, it, it seems, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:10:28 like that. I'm sure they're going to do something interesting with this. It is like on one hand. So, you know, Greta Gerwig, Francis, ha,
Starting point is 00:10:35 which, you know, depending on your appetite for indie movies, that mileage may vary, uh, then lady bird, then little women. So kind of, kind of a pretty impressive
Starting point is 00:10:47 opening three films and her follow-up is barbie like that it's kind of it's kind of wild like that's the progression it is the progression indie darling sundance maven oh now you have to do a blockbuster that could potentially ruin your career if it doesn't do well. The thing that makes me more interested in this is that she wrote it. She was like, oh, I have an idea for this. Took the time to write it
Starting point is 00:11:15 and then went with it as opposed to it just being like, all right, well, the only way you can prove that you can do something with a budget over $100 million is by taking this script well the only way you can prove that you can do something with a budget over 100 million dollars is by taking this script we've had uh being rewritten steadily for the past 25 years uh you know give it a shot but it's also really great supporting cast featuring America Pereira and Kate Kinnan.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I don't know. It's interesting. They've officially caught my eye. I like the premise of this trending episode is that I am an important media influencer. They'll be happy to know that they have my attention. Be careful what you do with it, right?
Starting point is 00:12:07 Are you threatening Barbie? I'm threatening Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach that they better do something interesting with this property. Don't bore me, darling. All right, let's take a break. We'll be right back. This version of you is terrifying. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church.
Starting point is 00:12:42 And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and LA-based Shekinah Church, an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling firsthand accounts, the series will illuminate untold and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration.
Starting point is 00:13:18 It's a vital revelation aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This summer, the nation watched as the Republican nominee for president was the target of two assassination attempts, separated by two months. These events were mirrored nearly 50 years ago when President Gerald Ford faced two attempts on his life in less than three weeks. President Gerald R. Ford came stunningly close to being the victim of an assassin today.
Starting point is 00:13:54 And these are the only two times we know of that a woman has tried to assassinate a U.S. president. One was the protege of infamous cult leader Charles Manson. I always felt like Lynette was kind of his right-hand woman. The other, a middle-aged housewife working undercover for the FBI in a violent revolutionary underground. Identified by police as Sarah Jean Moore. The story of one strange and violent summer. This is Rip Current.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Available now with new episodes every Thursday. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Some people won't give you the real talk on drugs, but it's time we know the facts. Fentanyl is often laced into illicit drugs and used to make fake versions of prescription pills. You can't see it, taste it, or smell it. Suppliers mix fentanyl into their products because it's potent and cheap, and the dealer might not even know. Keep yourself and others safe by knowing the real deal on fentanyl. Get the facts. Go to realdealonfentanyl.com. This message is brought to you by the Ad Council.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Hey, fam. I'm Simone Boyce. I'm Danielle Robay. And we're the hosts of The Bright Side, the daily podcast from Hello Sunshine that is guaranteed to light up your day. Every weekday, we bring you conversations
Starting point is 00:15:13 with the culture makers who inspire us. Like a recent episode with Latin Grammy winner, podcast host, and TV personality, Chiquis, about making a name
Starting point is 00:15:23 for herself as the eldest daughter of beloved singer singer Jenny Rivera. I'm not afraid. And I think that that's why I've been able to kind of do my own thing and not necessarily stay in my mom's shadow, because I'm not afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone and shaking things up a little bit, because that's the only way I feel that you're going to make history. Listen to The Bright Side from Hello Sunshine on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:16:06 And we're back. And all right. So we haven't had an official streaming corner for a while. We're not going to get into why that is. I'm busy. Yeah, that's why. Let's go with that. It's not because I've been dropping the ball and not watching the latest. Yeah, you still haven't watched Cheer, which really threw us for a loop. Cheer season two, we were going to do an amazing. You can still do it without me.
Starting point is 00:16:25 I think you and Miles But that's not fun. Okay, fine. Number one rule of fun is Jack has to watch the shows as well. Okay. What were you even doing
Starting point is 00:16:34 in Guatemala? What the fuck were you even doing? I thought you went on vacation to watch Cheer. You have not stopped. You've continued to stream and you've started watching Severance,
Starting point is 00:16:47 which is something I intend to watch. We talked earlier in the week, I think that people are claiming Apple is the best streaming service now over Netflix. At least the Daily Beast is claiming that and they are the number one place I go for my media takes. But what else are you watching? Yes, I'm watching Severance.
Starting point is 00:17:06 I'm watching Marvel's Moon Knight. No idea what's going on in that. Please don't explain it to me. That's a dangerous thing to say out loud. I don't understand what's going on in this Marvel show. You're inviting harassment. Yes, I'm watching Moon Knight. I'm enjoying it.
Starting point is 00:17:21 I'm watching Severance. I'm enjoying it. I'm finishing Killing Eve, the final season. I'm enjoying it. I'm watching Severance. I'm enjoying it. I'm finishing Killing Eve, the final season. I'm enjoying it. Do we have an example of your trademark prestige casting in any of these shows? Of course.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Oh, okay. I don't know. You're very picky about what is and is not prestige casting. So, I want to give a big shout out to Below Deck Down Under on Peacock. Let me tell you, incredible television. If you guys need to see some reality television on a boat,
Starting point is 00:17:55 I really recommend Down Under, which is on Peacock. Down Under. Yeah, yeah. It's in Australia, and guess what? The captain is hot as hell. That's shocking to me a hot australian get a hot young australian captain who's just like hey i'm just happy to be here and you're like sounds unappealing uh don't like saying that now until you watch it and they're like
Starting point is 00:18:19 guys i'm leaving my wife i'm leaving my wife for captain'm leaving my wife for Captain... Jason. Jace. Jace-o is what his nickname would be in Australia. They love to do first syllable and then an O. Simmo. That's what they call Ben Simmons. Simmo. Steve-o.
Starting point is 00:18:43 Okay, you got to stop. Okay. Look, Miles is out for this one i need to do my best australian impression because you don't need to do anything i got it's look these are the things that people come to me for my hot uh media goss and uh my amazing australian accent go ahead if jack ever, you know why. Okay, so also watching Bust Down on Peacock, which I think Miles has spoken about on this show. I don't know. I mean, I think some prestige casting is tough right now for me
Starting point is 00:19:20 because Severance, I just think it's well cast. Do I think anything is necessarily prestige casting not necessarily can you get people like the perfect like the example of prestige casting that made you first say the words that's prestige casting well if you have ever watched uh chief stews deckheads chief stews molly lambert and i's um streaming channel show on twitch you know there is no definition of prestige casting prestige casting is exactly what i say prestige casting is exactly so give me give me an example of one thing you have said in the past is prestige casting okay i feel like there's a lot of it happening in yellow jackets i'm just gonna put that out there okay yes bringing juliet lewis and christina
Starting point is 00:20:05 ricci into a show together is prestige casting why i'll never tell you it just kind of is it is um 90s queens in a television show that's incredible prestige casting casting cole hauser in yellowstone as a white guy after he played i believe a Cuban man in uh Too Fast Too Furious is prestige casting we're finally casting him as his actual race huge that's prestige casting we love to see it okay now you see there's no real common denominator here yeah it's just what I say is prestige casting what gives me the old tumble bumbles in my belly welly? Cole Hauser couldn't look more like a white guy. Oh, but did you see him in Too Fast, Too Furious?
Starting point is 00:20:53 Where they literally slathered him with a self-tanner and called him Cuban or something. I don't even know if it was Cuban. It was like they were like, this is a man from a foreign country. And you're like, okay. turns out just a white guy but guess what finally they cast him in the role of a lifetime a man from montana there it is huge so there's a show called staff let's flats uh prestige casting that that That is on HBO Max. That is Staff as in S-T-A-F-F? Staffs is the guy's name, and he lets flats. So he rents out flats. And that's a Jamie and Natasha Demetrio,
Starting point is 00:21:34 sorry if I'm saying that last name wrong, joint, the brother-sister duo, comedy duo, who you might know Jamie Demetrio from... Fleababag he was the guy with the snaggletooth and fleabag he's the bad yeah he's the bad guy in game over man yes he's in game over man he's also in the new uh apple tv show the after party uh playing a hilarious character um oh there you go another apple tv joint oh yeah i've heard that's good, too. It was pretty good. I finished it.
Starting point is 00:22:07 And also Natasha Dimitriou, his sister. You might know her from What We Do in the Shadows and the incredible role of... What is her character's name? She's one of the vampires. Nadja. She plays Nadja. One of the main hilarious one of the vampires. Nadja. She plays Nadja. One of the main hilarious characters on the show.
Starting point is 00:22:28 So those two, yeah, they started out on a show that they did together called Staff Let's Flats. That's Staff T-H. Staff Let's Flats. Let's, I guess in the UK is to rent. Yeah. One of the cool things about the show is that they don't want you to watch
Starting point is 00:22:44 this based on that title they're like fuck off americans uh which kind of makes me want to watch it so there it is that's your i've heard that independently from like different sources that this is a good one yeah it's really funny i recommend it's on hbo max okay and then Starstruck season 2 we did cover Starstruck season 1 for on a streaming corner during the quarantine and you said season 2 is good too season 2 is great
Starting point is 00:23:14 really enjoyed it Rose Matifeo hilarious she's a that whole shit the whole casting is great Nikesh Patel everyone everyone in it NBA playoffs we got two The whole casting is great. Nikesh Patel. Everyone. Everyone in it. NBA playoffs. We got two of the play-in games.
Starting point is 00:23:32 Single elimination. Winner gets to the playoffs. Yes. Jack, you know you're not allowed to talk about basketball in here anymore. You have an entire podcast dedicated to basketball, and you know you're not allowed to just casually bring it up during TDZ anymore. I know, but that one's more evergreen. We don't like do that the lawyer is already calling great you happy we're being sued again is it is it adam's actually adam silver yeah no it's adam silver's 15 lawyer yeah that's true i mean adam silver is a lawyer. He was like David Stern's lawyer. He was legal. So, which is, never mind.
Starting point is 00:24:09 See how you're doing that thing again where you're finding a way to talk about basketball? We may be through with COVID, but the COVID is not through with us is the lesson that we have learned because Paul George is out for the Clippers playing game on this Friday evening. And I think we're going to drop an episode of that said podcast,
Starting point is 00:24:31 Miles and Jack got Matt Boosties in the feed this weekend. So stay tuned for that. It's a fun one. We love the Grizzlies. We love LaMelo Ball, among other things. Check that out. Those are some of the things that are trending super producer anna hosnier truly as always such a pleasure having you where can people find you
Starting point is 00:24:51 follow you i'm just anna hosnier on twitter i have a podcast called ethnically ambiguous i have a streaming show called deckheads chief stews with molly lambert you know i'm around i'm doing my thing um i'll be out in these streets. I'll be in Virginia for a wedding soon. Look out for me there. You'll be on those tennis courts. I am on the tennis courts in LA. You're on the tennis courts,
Starting point is 00:25:13 like just defeating power players in the entertainment industry. It's pretty impressive. Well, that's the thing. A lot of entertainment industry people play tennis. Yeah, just not as well as you, apparently. I'm alright. But if you have a great partner,
Starting point is 00:25:30 wow, you can really win. Alright, well, that has been a week of the Daily Zeitgeist. We are back on Monday with a whole ass episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other, be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to y'all on Monday. And stay tuned for Miles and Jack out Matt Boosties this weekend. Bye. Woohoo!
