Starting point is 00:02:01 Hello, the Internet, and welcome to this episode of Victor Trenbinyama. This is courtesy of Johnny Davis, a play on Victor Wembingyama, who is a name that I don't think I even need to explain who that is, to super producer Becca Ramos, who is joining us. Becca, how are you doing? Hello, I'm great. How are you? I'm good. Are you a big Victor Wembanyama believer? I know who this is.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I think that's... So this is a child, essentially. He's like 17 years old, but he is 7'4", and clips are starting to surface and everybody's like, oh my god, he is the truth.
Starting point is 00:02:43 This is like the... I'm assuming you're basketball. Basketball, yes. Okay. Yes, yes, yes. He's like stroking threes from, you know, beyond the three-point line, even though he's seven foot four. Everybody's very excited.
Starting point is 00:02:59 He had his premiere in a United States game in Vegas recently. And it's exciting times. So we'll see. We'll see. But I don't know. I said 7'5 at one point.
Starting point is 00:03:17 There's different conversations about how tall he is. But I don't think it matters. He's very, very tall. Very, very tall. He is a whole two plus feet taller than me so yeah you know it's anyways so one thing that's trending a indigenous owned cafe in portland was vandalized by antifa and it's just kind of a messy story with like a lot of different things going on. Yeah, I definitely saw that it was trending and I was like, oh no, what's going on in Portland? I lived in Portland at one point for a few years. I have quite a kinship with it, but I definitely am very critical of the history of what's been going on during COVID, all the Proud Boys stuff. I definitely have friends. All my friends have
Starting point is 00:04:05 left Portland since I moved because they were black and brown people who genuinely started to feel unsafe in a way that they were like, I feel more safe in New York City than I do in Portland, Oregon. It's gotten that bad. So apparently this indigenousowned coffee shop, according to townhall.com, it is one of the only indigenous-owned coffee shops in Portland called the Bison Cafe, where they were hosting a coffee with a cop event in hopes to bring the community and the police together to help with public safety and then earlier that morning at like 6 a.m about six vandals vandalized the shop vandalized a lot of the native american artwork in the shop for me as a woman of color who lived in portland i'm very conflicted and confused about this story as to like and hurt in the sense of like i i can't believe, you know, it's not built for us to be bootlegging, but the bootlicking, so to speak,
Starting point is 00:05:31 uh, Antifa is, you know, definitely proud of themselves in a sense. It seems all the posts are very much like, yeah, you got him licking, got him.
Starting point is 00:05:41 Um, I don't know if there's any winners in this scenario especially i think there's a lot of um conversation that this is kind of overshadowing the fact that the monotona county sheriff's deputy shot a civilian near the lloyd center which is in east portland more towards the city center this coffee shop is definitely deep East Portland off of 57th Street. And there's been like no investigation. There's been no information about it.
Starting point is 00:06:10 We don't know if this person is alive or dead. So it just goes to speak that Portland is continuing to be a messy, scary place when it comes to police brutality and corruption. Yeah. And the tension you were talking about, about like between persons of color who then fall to the right,
Starting point is 00:06:30 the conservative side of things, I feel like, I don't know, just looking at the outlook, I think a lot of people think Tim Scott will be Trump's running mate for the 2024 election. And that's, yeah. So that's going to just continue
Starting point is 00:06:44 to be sort of a a thing um the dissonance at the at the center of like what everything that they're doing you know with yeah policy and uh basically everything else about them being white supremacists yeah ted wheeler uh you know made a comment a statement about it saying, like, we are gonna do our best to find who did this and prosecute him to the best of our ability, blah, blah, blah. Of course,
Starting point is 00:07:13 about the coffee shop vandalization when it involves cops, and they still have the event apparently later that day, but not about a civilian being shot at the Lloyd Center, and that to me is gross and sad and frustrating. It is something activists are fighting to this day in Portland. And I just hope, you know, people in Portland stay vigilant, stay safe.
Starting point is 00:07:36 I know so many areas of Portland are feeling unsafe and they obviously have such a deep history of racism because it's the only state that literally made black people illegal. Officially, yeah. On paper. That's why you don't see black people in Portland a lot of times because they were not allowed to be there for a long time. Right. But, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:57 Dank Brandon is trending. Which, that's, I guess, a reaction to the fact that biden pardoned uh thousands of people convicted of marijuana possession um which feels like a very straightforward correct and good move uh you know trying to disassemble some of the war on drugs apparatus that has been proven to be white supremacist and ineffective and should have happened already um it's also being framed as a an october surprise to win political points like the timing so we were like wait but why isn't he doing this earlier and it's because like the timing the optics could have been better as we got closer to the election i mean it's it falls under the same umbrella of this student loan relief of like,
Starting point is 00:08:49 let's make Biden look as good as possible. Be vigilant, by the way, for that. Sign up for the Department of Education emails to make sure that you sign up in time for the portal to apply for student debt relief. They're saying it's going to become increasingly harder come closer to November and December to receive that relief. So just be vigilant. This month, they're supposed to announce that. Yeah. There is a picture of a bunch of people who are activists
Starting point is 00:09:23 trying to get this sort of carceral system reform. And they had a giant inflatable joint on the lawn of the White House with the words Biden. Come on, man, written on it. And it's a good image. Yeah. Yeah. And Velma is trending. Velma from Scooby-Doo.
Starting point is 00:09:44 Apparently in an upcoming movie, Scooby-Doo Trick or Treat, Velma is going to have a storyline where she has a crush on another woman. And this is something that I think people just assumed that Velma was gay. And apparently Velma was modeled off of a child actor who turned out to be one of the first gay elected officials in LA. And just everything, it was kind of an open secret type thing. Absolutely. When you Google Velma uh the results come up and then confetti and pride flags literally drop from the top of your browser um so google is celebrating yeah you win some but i will say uh in the original like live action scooby-doo from the early aughts uh velma was supposed to be like
Starting point is 00:10:45 openly gay like the uh the makers of the movie have stated that in many interviews being like yeah in the original script yeah in the original script as gay but between like all of the you know studio notes and things like that by the time the movie came out it was eventually like not only just watered down but written out of the script that she was gay so yeah and in the sequel she has a male love interest and then by the sequel she has a boyfriend and then it's seth green yes which is like i guess that makes sense i don't know right but i'm. I'm excited to watch it. I have always been a big fan of the Scooby-Doo franchise and Velma in particular.
Starting point is 00:11:31 So, yeah, what a win. Yeah. Conservative outlets are obviously quick to point out. They're like, the original creative team behind Scooby-Doo said that Velma wasn't gay. But when you dig a little deeper, thanks to our writer, JM, you dig a little deeper, thanks to our writer,
Starting point is 00:11:45 JM, he dug a little deeper. Her character was inspired by a brainy, quote, tomboy child actor from the 50s and 60s TV, who later went on to become, like I said, the first openly gay or lesbian person elected to the California legislature.
Starting point is 00:11:59 So it is iconic in lesbian culture that Velma is queer. All right, let's take a quick break. We'll be right back. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series, Dancing for the Devil, the 7M TikTok cult. And I'm Clea Gray, former member of 7M Films and Shekinah Church. And we're the host of the new podcast, Forgive Me For I Have Followed. Together, we'll be diving even deeper into the unbelievable stories behind 7M Films and LA-based Shekinah Church,
Starting point is 00:12:34 an alleged cult that has impacted members for over two decades. Jessica and I will delve into the hidden truths between high-control groups and interview dancers, church members, and others whose lives and careers have been impacted, just like mine. Through powerful, in-depth interviews with former members and new, chilling firsthand accounts, the series will illuminate untold and extremely necessary perspectives. Forgive Me For I Have Followed will be more than an exploration. It's a vital revelation aimed at ensuring these types of abuses never happen again. Listen to Forgive Me For I Have Followed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, I'm Gianna Pradente.
Starting point is 00:13:15 And I'm Jemay Jackson-Gadsden. We're the hosts of Let's Talk Offline, a new podcast from LinkedIn News and iHeart Podcasts. When you're just starting out in your career, you have a lot of questions. Like, how do I speak up when I'm feeling overwhelmed? Or, can I negotiate a higher salary if this is my first real job? Girl, yes. Each week, we answer your unfiltered work questions.
Starting point is 00:13:38 Think of us as your work besties you can turn to for advice. And if we don't know the answer, we bring in experts who do. Like resume specialist Morgan Saner. The only difference between the person who doesn't get the job and the person who gets the job
Starting point is 00:13:50 is usually who applies. Yeah, I think a lot about that quote. What is it, like you miss 100% of the shots you never take? Yeah, rejection is scary, but it's better than you rejecting yourself. Together, we'll share what it really takes to thrive in the early years of your career.
Starting point is 00:14:05 Without sacrificing your sanity or sleep. Listen to Let's Talk Offline on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I'm Keri Champion, and this is Season 4 of Naked Sports, where we live at the intersection of sports and culture. Up first, I explore the making of a rivalry, Kaitlyn Clark versus Angel Reese. I know I'll go down in history. People are talking about women's basketball just because of one single game.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Every great player needs a foil. I ain't really near them boys. I just come here to play basketball every single day, and that's what I focus on. From college to the pros, Clark and Reese have changed the way we consume women's sports. Angel Reese is a joy to watch.
Starting point is 00:14:47 She is unapologetically black. I love her. What exactly ignited this fire? Why has it been so good for the game? And can the fanfare surrounding these two supernovas be sustained? This game is only going to get better because the talent is getting better. This new season will cover all things sports and culture. Listen to Naked Sports on the Black Effect Podcast Network,
Starting point is 00:15:08 iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The Black Effect Podcast Network is sponsored by Diet Coke. In a galaxy far, far away. No, babe, that's taken. We're in our own world, remember? Right. In our own world, remember? Right. In our own world, we're two space cadets and totally normal humans. Sure, totally normal humans.
Starting point is 00:15:31 Embark on a journey across the stars, discovering the wonders of the universe one episode at a time. We'll talk about life, love, laughter, and why you should never argue with your co-pilot. Especially when she's always right. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:48 And if we hit turbulence, just blame it on Mercury retrograde. Or Emily's questionable space piloting skills. Hey, join us on In Our Own World for cosmic conversations, stellar laughs, and super corny dad jokes. Listen to In Our Own World as a part of the My Cultura podcast network available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And don't worry, we promise to avoid any black holes. Most
Starting point is 00:16:12 of the time. And we're back. And let's talk Halloween costumes. Let's, you know, every October we like to check in with what's trending on the Halloween costume front. It sounds like you are a clever Halloween costume person. I love Halloween. I already stated this on Trending.
Starting point is 00:16:40 It's my favorite time of year. I love to dress up. I love, I mean, I'm Latina at the end of the day. You know, we love to put on a show. I have had a few, I feel like iconic costumes. I like a costume that like, it doesn't have to be expensive. Like you don't have to be like full on cosplay, but I want to know what you are. Like, I want to be able to look at you and you be able to be like, oh my God. Yeah. Like, I don't want a costume that's like, oh, I put it together with just a t-shirt and jeans type of thing. And I'm like this TV character. No, I want to know that when I look
Starting point is 00:17:14 at you, I can figure out who you are. And I love if it's scrappy. And I say that all to say is that in high school, I have bought this green morph suit and it has carried me to this day. I bought a new one to replace it because it ripped. But... The green morph suit is like the full body spandex green. Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:31 Like you could be on a green screen and you couldn't see me type of thing. Like goes over the head or... This one has a removable head. Okay. Because I'm claustrophobic. Yeah, that's a lot. Yeah, that's a lot.
Starting point is 00:17:44 And also not as versatile. I have used this morph suit to be four different costumes. And, you know, listeners, vote what new green thing you want me to be next. I've had a few people chime in, but I bought it to be the Hulk in high school, which is, if you've ever seen me,
Starting point is 00:18:00 you would laugh because I'm a very tiny person. But I had these Hulk hands and purple shorts and I wore the green morph suit and painted my face. And then I've done it to be a Ninja Turtle. I have used it to be Luigi. I've used it to be a crocodile and my ex was the crocodile hunter. So it's been a very versatile good costume to me i made the tail uh if you creep far enough back into my social media i'm sure you can find it uh but i i put it out there what green thing should i be i've gotten crayola crayon i've gotten
Starting point is 00:18:39 yoshi um poison ivy this costume is i'm like this should be a running fit now I'm going to be a green thing every year for the rest of my life so tell me what green thing I should be so I'm going to be a green thing
Starting point is 00:18:51 this year because so usually I've talked before about how I have a Batman costume like a full body costume with muscles built in
Starting point is 00:19:00 and it's too small for me and it leaves it's been christened Camel Toe Batman because it really digs in there and can be embarrassing. But I figured out if you wear jeans underneath, it's okay.
Starting point is 00:19:12 It works. So my son is going to be Spider-Man and my wife is also going to be Spider-Man. So I was like, okay, so maybe we could find, maybe I could be Spider- Spider Pig or something like that. And it could be like into the Spider-Verse type theme. But then I thought maybe it'd be more fun if I was Green Goblin.
Starting point is 00:19:32 And so I got a good Green Goblin mask. Halloween costume shopping online is still such a mess. It is. It's such a mess. It's like the, you, I mean, so I got the mask. That was quick. And then, but the full body suit that's supposed to go you know to fill the outfit out is not like i i don't know if it's gonna get here on time and like if it's gonna fit me or any any of that stuff um it just it really feels like i don't know someone should have fixed this and made it better by now because it's hard.
Starting point is 00:20:10 I mean, I guess the answer is to be creative. And there's actually a good New York mag. There's plenty of really bad articles that are like, here are the topical Halloween costumes for this year. And like SFGate has one that's got adult Elvis costume. They're like, you know, because Elvis, for some reason, adult Patrick Bateman American Psycho costume is there. That one has been coming up a lot lately, the Patrick Bateman one, I feel like. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:37 I mean, it is like an iconic thing. Yeah, it's a classic. Yeah. But then they also have Avril Lavigne, an Avril Lavigne Halloween costume there for some reason. I don't know where this became topical. So I would say skip the SFGate recommendations, but New York Magazine's strategist is the cream of the crop,
Starting point is 00:20:58 I think, in terms of ideas for topical Halloween costumes. You've got Evelyn Wang from Everything Everywhere All at Once with the hot dog fingers. That one's a good one. Yeah, they link off to a place where you can buy hot dog finger gloves from A24. Carmi Bersato from The Bear. Just a blue apron with chef clogs and a white t-shirt.
Starting point is 00:21:23 I kind of like that one. You were saying that was in the mix for you guys. Yes, my partner was like a big fan of the bear and asked if we could do that one. But I do feel like it's going to be a very common costume this year. I feel like a lot of couples are going to do
Starting point is 00:21:38 that one. Some of these other ones, the FBI's raid on Mar-a-Lago. I feel like that one's funny. Yeah, just an FBI windbreaker. But you are still being an FBI agent, which is rough.
Starting point is 00:21:54 Yeah, which is not great. We're ACAB here, so, you know. They have a whole suite of Don't Worry Darling costumes, but they're from the press tour of Don't Worry Darling. Yeah, they're from the press tour of Don't Worry Darling. Yeah, which is crazy. They just, you look like people.
Starting point is 00:22:09 Right. Like one of them is Olivia Wilde in a yellow like gown. Looks more like Belle than it does. Yeah, you're going to get Belle for sure. The one that I could see myself identifying is they have Harry Styles with the just giant powder blue collar
Starting point is 00:22:29 that like comes all the way down from when he supposedly spit on Chris Pine the Beyonce Renaissance one is fun Beyonce Renaissance one is you know very ambitious you have to be ready to be naked and if you're gonna be in a place where it's cold i don't
Starting point is 00:22:47 recommend like in new york i'm looking for a costume that's gonna cover me up i just in portland same thing i was wearing costumes that covered me up i was like i'm not into i'm i've never been into the sexy costume i'm here for the women that are i'm like be out there be proud be empowering i love that for you i'm a nerd i'm gonna do a weird costume i'm gonna do something very authentic and the beyonce renaissance one is the outfit from the album cover with you know big long blonde wig that might make people a pony yeah but then they have like the toy horse yeah like version i like pearl toy horse that I feel like is just good so then you are
Starting point is 00:23:26 enormous like giant Beyonce from the Renaissance cover I don't know they have Serena Williams bedazzled
Starting point is 00:23:33 outfit Fire Island group costume is again very ambitious that one is ambitious
Starting point is 00:23:41 because you're basically naked because it's based in the summer when you go to Fire Island. But B, I'm like, that's gay culture. People just look like that. Like, wow.
Starting point is 00:23:50 I have many friends that dress like that at the club. So it's not... It feels appropriative if you're not a part of the community, I guess is what I'm saying. So toe the line with the Fire Island costume. I think the one that I like best in terms of probably easy to pull off i do think most people would know who you were is nathan fielder in the rehearsal um it's just a gray crew neck sweatshirt and then you just have to like put some strappy things on you gotta put the laptop uh harness yeah so you just. You got to put the laptop harness.
Starting point is 00:24:25 Yeah. So you just need to get the connected desk laptop harness walking desk, which is $40 at buy at connected desk and $50 at Amazon. So that that's a good one. I feel like at least for me, I feel like I could pull that off because I also kind of look like that. And we're about the same age. Just sort of schlubby and having a laptop connected to my chest.
Starting point is 00:24:52 Alright. Well, those are some of the things that are trending. We also had Nuclear Threat and Kanye, but you know. It was a heavy day and we wanted to end on a fun note. Well, let's go Halloween costumes. Tomorrow we'll be back
Starting point is 00:25:06 and talking again about other Halloween costume ideas. That's just all we're going to talk about this month, guys. It's too much out there. Too much. Becca, thank you so much for joining. Where can people find you, follow you, all that good stuff? You can find me and follow me at Bex, B-E-C-C-S
Starting point is 00:25:22 Ramos on all platforms. You can find me at Mil Mundos and Bushwick on the weekends. And also, next up, we have reopened the application. So, and the link, I know yesterday Miles had promoted the Bitly link I made, but the iHeart.com slash next up website has been updated with the correct application link. So you should be able to still go to iHeart.com slash NextUp and apply there. But we've reopened it till October 14th. So if you missed it the first round, please get your ideas in there.
Starting point is 00:25:59 We're excited to see what y'all come up with. Yeah, yeah. Class number two. All right. Well, those are the things that are trending on this Thursday afternoon. We're back tomorrow with the whole episode of the show. Until then, be kind to each other. Be kind to yourselves. Get the vaccine. Get the flu shot. Don't do nothing about white supremacy. And we will talk to y'all tomorrow. Bye. Bye. I'm Jess Casavetto, executive producer of the hit Netflix documentary series,
