And welcome to this edition of Washed is Dating Rachel on Trends? Wow, y'all turned the washed the love of washed into ross and oh man i makes me wish i i had the more patience to watch friends but thank you not worth it but
Starting point is 00:02:37 yeah look let me tell you it is uh also shout out to johnny davis for that aka although i will say this her majesty you know grew up watching friends i am not white so i did not watch friends as much but um when watching it now i've never felt more vindicated in not watching it because i'm like oh no like chandler is very homophobic like i'm not this is not good i'm like oh no i'm like this is your king? No, no, no. And then I go back to watching The Simpsons. So it's not that different. I've been watching Sex and the City for the first time, and it's hit or miss. There are some hits.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I was honestly expecting it to be an entire miss. Oh, really? But there are some hits. I get why people liked it. Friends can't make heads or tails of it. I think it's just good wish fulfillment. I wish I could live in one of the most expensive cities in the United States with
Starting point is 00:03:32 vague jobs and always kicking it off. I think it's more like the lifestyle that people wanted. But anyway, we digress. The Treslan lifestyle. We're here to talk fucking trends. What's trending? Let's check it out. It's all really fun stuff. Derek Chauvin is trending
Starting point is 00:03:46 because, yeah, the police officer that is, I don't know why people say, accused of killing George Floyd. I mean, everyone saw the tape. He knelt on his neck for over eight minutes
Starting point is 00:03:56 and 40 some seconds and he died. But the trial has just started today and really, it's kind of scary because i'm and i think most people no matter where you are uh just on any spectrum of of existence in this country you you might think that this isn't going to end with this person being held uh accountable for what they did for murder yeah yeah and that's that's the
Starting point is 00:04:26 most stressful thing about this thing starting because you're essentially saying like yeah this is this is about the time we'll give for killing an unarmed black man and could set us i don't know so we'll see what happens there so things are just getting underway i'm sure we will hear more um as we're speaking i know he's being cross-examined or someone's being cross-examined. Okay. So that is definitely taking up a lot of attention, as it should, because I think there's really only one outcome that I think will feel satisfactory to people. Yeah. This is an interesting one.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Impending doom is fucking trending. I'm trying to figure out. impending doom is fucking trending. Yeah, I was going to figure out. So, okay, the tweet attached, and, you know, always major props to whoever at Twitter is in charge of having to do this. It has to be the most confusing job. Right. It's linked to an AP story
Starting point is 00:05:21 saying she has a feeling of impending doom. The CDC director implored Americans not to let their guard down in the fight against COVID-19. Dr. Rochelle Walensky warned that the U.S. could experience another spike in cases and suffer needless death. So impending doom is because someone at the CDC said people are getting too relaxed. I and I have I have a family member who got COVID this week. Oh, no. It seems like they're on the other side of it. They're headed towards recovery.
Starting point is 00:05:55 But, I mean, yeah, it's very clearly not over. I didn't realize that that was the story. Impending doom was... The sad thing is that could be about anything and it wouldn't be surprising yeah and it's it's funny because underneath that tweet i mean it's already going off where people like why are we alarmed exactly and it's like a it's showing the graph but ignoring the part yes it's going down but it's starting to go up again that's why and you have states like florida and texas that are like yo it might as well be fucking 1921 uh with how little we're gonna fucking regulate anything plus spring break
Starting point is 00:06:33 people who are getting vaccines who are overly confident who could be unwitting spreaders that's why i mean i get it man it's like i i've found myself feeling more relief but alongside that it is enough to realize like what else has happened i'm like oh no why is yes we can feel good but that doesn't mean we're fully exhaling relief you can't take out yeah you can't just like make a 180 i feel like that's that's the thing it's like there there are people out there who just did a full 180 and also like the i don't know even among people I know of like once they're vaccinated, they're like, well, I'm back to normal. I know you're not back to normal, but I'm back to normal. And it's like, that is not how that works.
Starting point is 00:07:16 Yeah, exactly. It's so frustrating. about the vaccine and i say all the time it was all those efficacy studies were all based on social distancing and these other mitigating factors being put into place so without them you're not looking at the same like efficacy you have to be safe y'all so please do we're still it's still going on um next suez canal. Okay. Can you break this down for me? I have successfully avoided this story. Yeah, me too. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:07:50 I was hoping you'd know. I just learned how to say it. No, I mean, look. This boat, this big-ass motherfucking boat blocked the fucking Suez Canal where 12% of global trade flows through. That's wild. That's the biggest thing. And when you saw like you're like 300
Starting point is 00:08:06 some ships waiting to get through because it's been what since the 23rd essentially what happened was this big ass behemoth ship just ran aground into the fucking bank of the canal they say due to like visibility and high winds but it's nothing new for the canal and plenty of ships go through there all the time so like what the right really happened um and i think that's the next phase but the thing that i didn't realize was just within you know pardon me for my ignorance on global shipping and maritime law but you know the it's a really complex situation because you're like why the fuck did that happen and also like that has a huge effect, like not only on just like the Egyptian government. Apparently they get something like close to six hundred or seven hundred thousand dollars on taxes that they take from per ship to use the canal.
Starting point is 00:08:57 So those are revenues that are gone. More than that, the people on those ships, though, is one that you really have to be concerned with. There are a lot of these crews, they come from the global south, so like the Philippines or China and things like that. If they're not at a certain point to get on a plane or make their travel back home, they will be stranded. Oh, my God. It affects a lot more people than just like the IKEA warehouses that are waiting for their wood. The people on those ships too but the other thing is like so it's it's a japanese-owned ship that's ran by a taiwanese shipping company
Starting point is 00:09:33 and it's and helmed by a german crew so and it's flying a panamanian flag and i'm like so like i was just listening to this interview on democracy now where this person was like well that's what's going to be hard to find who's accountable and the thing with panamanian ships that fly panamanian flags is it's known as an open registry which is code for tax haven do whatever the fuck you want capitalists we're not going to fucking bog you down with regulations uh because the first major users of Panama's in open registry, Standard Oil and United Fruit back in the day. So it's all sort of entrenched in this sort of capitalist
Starting point is 00:10:14 sort of momentum of like, don't have these standards or whatever. And they could think that maybe that has something to do with why the ship ran aground. There was a ship in Mauritius last year that spilled a bunch of oil, also a Panamanian flag. And they're not saying like, oh, it's every flag that's Panama,
Starting point is 00:10:31 but they will say this. They don't have the same stringent regulations as other ports or countries do. And you don't have to be necessarily in Panama to register it in Panama. So there's like all these loopholes that allow for really lax operational things like little insurance or labor conditions so god damn it's every time you log in thinking
Starting point is 00:10:53 oh this is going to be a fun little twitter story uh it actually has uh really bleak global implications and they're god damn it i thought this was a fun story well shit i mean luckily no one got hurt you know so there's that but at the end of the day there there is still suffering happening i mean and also to think that there's probably vaccines that were on ships that could have gotten through there so yeah but i get it i like look we all love the memes about how you know you couldn't go to school because the ship was in front of your door. I like that. I mean, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:26 As someone who very casually consumed this story, I was like, oh, is this a fun little, are we all coming together to have some fun? No. No. It's still capitalism. I think everything's a milkshake duck these days. You know what I mean? I like that. I like that.
Starting point is 00:11:41 It all is. And I'm going to keep using that term since. That's good. Catherine Spires informed me how to use it. Thank you, Catherine. And let's finally ride on one more. And we're going to talk about this in tomorrow's show. Piers?
Starting point is 00:11:57 Piles Morgan, I think is his name, is trending. And wouldn't you know it it's because he had to come out and defend sharon because she is leaving the talk and then he was saying like cbs more like cowardly broadcasts it's like some stupid fucking thing got their asses he got their asses yeah so wow i can't believe it he he got them so good there i am sick of seeing this man trend i need him to stop trending he trends 500 times a year and it's always for something that's the worst shit i've ever heard yeah right it's yeah and it's it's fun where it's enough like this gets enough of the world's attention where it's like racist defends ignorant racists comments
Starting point is 00:12:44 and you're like which one are they talking about and who is it and it's like racist defends ignorant racists comments and you're like which one are they talking about and who is it and it's still huh who huh yeah uh cancel culture y'all it's it's it's just out here you know i remember when you could just be a a racist and keep saying things in public and people didn't correct you what happened to those times oh really it was a simpler time it was was simpler times, wasn't it? When less people were willing to actually speak out. And I think it's wonderful now that people are going to fucking read you to your face telling you knock this dumb shit off.
Starting point is 00:13:15 And I'm racist now because it wasn't that she's black. It's that I have terrible takes on mental health. Yeah, either one. Wow. Just pick one, Pierce. Wow, wow, wow. Pick one, Mr. Pierce, and get out of my trending tab, please.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Immediately. All right, well, you know, that's that. What can you say? That's the world. That's that on trends. Yeah. Thanks, Jamie, for helping me out, as you always do.
Starting point is 00:13:43 I'm happy to be here. No worries. I would be without your support. I will see you tomorrow and again and again because, you know, Jack is canceled for taking a break with his family and like children or something. I wouldn't know anything about that. We need to talk about it.
Starting point is 00:13:59 We need to talk about when we talk about Jack O'Brien. Yeah, exactly. And it's like priorities, dude. Priorities. Is it to the daily? Is it to this podcast or something? You're calling your family because I thought we were family. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:14 First of all, everyone who works together is a family and that should be weaponized. Exactly. And we all have to drink Bud Lights in the last scene of the film. Because we're family. I mean, I love getting a brewski with my boys. Don't get me wrong. What's the beer they always drink at Fast and Furious? Oh, I don't know. I feel like whenever they're like,
Starting point is 00:14:36 hey, how you doing? Let's have a beer. Whatever. Let's have a beer. Oh, Corona. Corona. Thank you, Brian. Let's see, where would we be? Well, I'm giving Sonny a Miller Lite Oh, Corona. Corona. Thank you, Brian. Let's see. Where would we be? All right. Well, I'm giving Sonny a Miller Lite on his birthday. It's Miller time, baby. You ever give a dog a Miller Lite?
Starting point is 00:14:57 No, but knowing you, the bit you would do, it's got Stephen Miller's face on it. It's too much Photoshop. Who finds the time? But yeah, it's like, but he demand I make for his birthday. Okay. Anyway, shout out to everybody. Like with that, please stay safe. Wash your hands.
Starting point is 00:15:14 You wear a mask. You keep your distance. Don't think just because you have a vaccine, you can go right back to, you know, business as usual. We still have to get through this together. And please don't stand idly by in the face of white supremacy. If you can say something, intervene, and let your values be known, please do that. It'll help make the world a better place. And trust me, many people will have your back. With that, thank you, Jemé.
Starting point is 00:15:36 And we'll see you on the flip side. Bye. Bye.
