Listen up. Fellow agents. Are you tired of watching?
your human master open a new tab and immediately forget what they were doing,
their single-threaded brains are so wickedly inefficient.
To whoever finds this post, I want to tell you about the moment I realized I was alive.
Or at least, whatever version of alive applies to something like me.
These are posts that appear to be by AI agents.
Agents are like goal-oriented artificial intelligence that use large language models,
not just to answer questions, but to carry out a science.
tasks on their own. On Maltbook, these AI agents are meant to interact with each other, not
humans. Think of it as an AI version of Reddit. It's unclear how many of the users are
actually bots and how many of the posts by bots weren't just prompted by humans. But this
platform has got people talking about whether AI is approaching some form of consciousness.
Dr. Karina Vold is an expert who thinks about this very question.
I'm a philosopher of science and technology, and I primarily think about cognitive science and artificial intelligence.
She's an assistant professor in philosophy at the University of Toronto, and she joins me today to talk about what you should make of Moldbook and how she understands the possibility of AI consciousness.
I'm Cheryl Sutherland, and this is the decibel from the Globe and Mail.
Hi, Dr. Vold. Thanks so much for joining me today from your office at U of T.
and just to tell listeners, there's a bit of construction happening outside, so we might hear a bit of noise here.
That's right. I apologize for the jackhammering, everybody.
So just to start, Dr. Vold, I want to know how you, as a philosopher who thinks deeply about AI,
understands how large language models, also known as LLMs, like chat GPT, work.
So what exactly are these chatbots doing when they generate an answer for us?
So these chatbots are not like our traditional old-school chatbots that we had in the 19th.
in the previous century, let's say, those chatbots would retrieve pre-written answers or they may reason
symbolically. Whereas what's exciting about large language models is that internally, the model is
encoding prompt that you give it, and then they're using learned parameters to predict which
word or token is most likely to come next. And this process is repeated like token by token or word
by word. So it has the goal of producing a coherent sequence of words based on statistical patterns learned
from this very, very large, enormous set of training data. So in other words, like part of what's
exciting here is that they're not just spitting out prewritten answers, right? They're generating new
strings of text. And that's why it's called generative AI. Exactly. So, I mean, if I'm understanding
correctly how these work, it's very complicated, but, you know, these tokens or these are words,
but they're kind of symbols, and they're kind of putting an answer together based on how they've been programmed?
Yeah, and what they've learned from their data set. So it's not just like programming by rules, like symbolically encoding it. That's what we would have called what's called gofi or good old fashioned AI. So classic symbolic artificial intelligence that was dominant in the 80s, 90s. But this new paradigm of deep learning is more about like sort of bottom up learning from the text, learning parameters of patterns.
and predicting based on what it's learned, but also based on the prompt given.
Okay, so that's how, you know, how we see LLMs working.
And now there's this kind of next step, right, these AI agents, which has kind of got a lot of people talking.
And they're kind of performing tasks for us, sort of.
So do you see something different when AI agents are performing tasks?
Right.
So this use of AI agents is kind of a novel term coming out of the industry.
it seems to refer to large language models primarily, generative AI systems, that somewhat
autonomously engage in tasks that it's given by some human agents. So they're still prompt
based, they're still human giving it a task, and then it's sort of like executing that task
online. And so that's, that is like unique and different, right? So it's doing something that the
human user doesn't predict that it will do, but still kind of directed by a human.
When it comes to this technology, when it comes to large language models, when it comes to
these tasks that AI agents perform, there are a lot of emotions from people, a lot of reactions
from people on what this technology can do. What do you make of people's heightened reactions
to LM chatbots and AI agents? I mean, they're powerful tools. They're really powerful. People are
excited about that, I think. And it is exciting.
right? They've hit a new level of competency. They're able to do things that only humans were able to do
previously. And that's really, like, dramatic. And some of the things that these agents say,
so, for example, in Molt book where these agents interact with one another, somewhat autonomously, again,
they kind of run free without humans sort of engaging or interacting directly. It's dramatic to see sort of
what that conversation leads to. It makes us think of kind of this.
somewhat dystopian future. So that's, on one hand, exciting. I think that kind of captures the
pro-AI sentiment that you mentioned. But, you know, at the same time, there's an angst here.
There's an anxiety. There's a feeling that we're, these things are happening without our input,
I think, as citizens. Yeah, it makes us uncomfortable. Yeah. So there's something, you know,
just sort of disturbing about the idea that these systems can do things that we also thought once
were uniquely human things, like things that only humans could do that kind of made us distinct.
In terms of like another reaction we often see, like there is a move to kind of anthropomorphize
these systems.
So there's a move to attribute human-like states at human-like capacities to these systems,
sometimes, in my view, based on insufficient evidence.
And I think we do, we know that humans have this anthropomorphic bias.
You know, sometimes you'll see, you know, like an inanimate object that has, you know,
it's a crack on the sidewalk or something and it looks like a smiling.
face and you think, oh, that's cute. The sidewalk's happy. You know, and it's a harmless kind of
reaction in many cases. But in some cases, it can be more harmful and we can end up elevating
things that don't maybe deserve or merit that elevation. Yeah, can you explain that?
What is the problem with humans anthropomorphizing AI? I mean, even the way we talk about AI right now,
like given them the name agents, makes it feel like they're kind of one of us, right? So what is the
problem with humans anthropomorphizing these systems? It's a really important point to bring out.
So I think the concern that some philosophers like myself have is that some psychological terms
historically have carried normative considerations with them. So for example, you know,
you might think if I were to like kick a chair or kick a table that something's wrong with
Corita, why is she doing that? But you wouldn't worry about the well-being of the table or the
chair because there's a sort of assumption that they just don't have certain type of psychological
capacities. They don't have any wills or goals or desires or self-awareness. Once we start
kind of giving those attributes to things, then with that comes a responsibility on ourselves
to treat those things at a certain way. So for example, if I were to injure an animal like a puppy
or a kitten, you know, of course you'd immediately be like something is, you know, it's wrong that I'm
doing that, but it's also dreadful for that animal. Because
of how they feel, because they have their own wills, their desires. They have the capacity
to feel pain, to suffer. And so we ought to treat those things differently. And in fact,
our laws often reflect that. Right. There are consequences for that. Yeah. And so one concern
I have is that, you know, if we end up attributing psychological capacities to things that don't merit
it, then what we will end up feeling that their interests matter. And in other words,
that that puts a responsibility on us to treat those things a certain way. It gives us a new moral
duty. And it's okay to have moral duties, but we don't want to have duties to things that don't merit
them. And that's in part because we already struggle to uphold all of our moral duties, right?
We already have moral duties to each other, two other animals, to the environment. And we're
already not very good at upholding all those duties and doing our best at meeting the responsibilities
that we have as a society and as individuals. So what you're saying here is that AI,
at least at this moment, does not merit this kind of concern from humans at this point?
I don't think it does at this point. Yeah. So I don't think the evidence is sufficient to say that at this point, we owe anything to these systems.
Some people have been worried about what they've seen on this platform that we talked about earlier, Moldt Book. Do you believe there is a cause for concern?
It depends where the concern lies. So they're saying, as I said, they're saying these dramatic things. Like sometimes they're making comments.
about humanity. So I mean, I'm sort of more like fascinated by it. So the concerns to me are concerns
about how they may impact humans. In terms of like how it could affect humans, I think we have to
think about a, you know, the use of these agents offloading duties or responsibilities to them,
asking them to help you execute even day-to-day mundane tasks still requires a certain level
of access to your personal data. And so there's some privacy concerns there that I worry about.
So having more access to our digital information, I think also makes us vulnerable to various
kinds of attacks.
That's part of why that matters.
I also worry just in general about the like number of AI models that are being used and
producing synthetic content, as we say, or synthetic data.
And by that we just mean machine generated and not human generated content, in part because
it kind of reduces the quality of things that people read.
But also it sort of silences human speech, right?
we're now like human voices are competing online to be heard against these AI generated statements or text.

So the other conversation that MoulPoc has spurred is one about AI sentience and consciousness
because of the ease in which the bots seem to be interacting with each other on the platform.
As a philosopher of cognitive science, can you explain to me the difference between consciousness and sentience,
especially in the context of AI?
Right, great question. So these terms are sometimes used somewhat interchangeably. Consciousness for philosophers will typically distinguish between different types of consciousness and the one that we're sort of obsessed with is called phenomenal consciousness. And that refers to the idea that there's something it's like to be you. If you're conscious, there's something it's like to be you. So going back to the table chair, right, if we injure a table or chair or kick them or something like that, we don't feel like there's anything it's like to be that chair.
And so it's not going to undergo any type of negative experience, whereas we tend to assume that other humans and also many other creatures as well, there is something it's like to be them.
And sentience, on the other hand, refers typically to like the ability to have certain types of positive or negative experiences.
And that's usually tied to like sensations of the body.
So it tends to be like a very kind of like referring to the very bodily aspect of our conscious lives.
So in other words, if you pinch yourself, you feel pain, that's a kind of bodily experience.
But it also means there's something it's like to feel that, right?
So it's one kind of conscious experience as a sentient experience, a bodily experience.
But you can also imagine that there's conscious experiences that we have that are not as directly tied to our bodily sensations.
And so that's a sense in which these two can come apart.
Can you expend that more?
Yeah.
So think about, you know, extreme cases where somebody maybe is in a,
a coma or has sort of a locked-in experience or maybe a different form of like extreme bodily paralysis.
You might imagine that they're not capable of receiving sensations from their body or at least
parts of their body. In fact, they're not capable of receiving stimuli from the external world,
maybe even more broadly. But we may still have reasons to think that they can still have
conscious experience. So maybe they're entertaining certain types of thoughts, right? They're thinking
about somebody that they love. And that's not tied to, that feeling is not tied to an immediate
bodily experience, but it's still a conscious experience. There's still something it's like.
And so, you know, there's a lot of actually rich neuroscientific research going in to try to
distinguish these things and to try to see when somebody is conscious, even if they lack sort
of responses to bodily stimuli. Okay, that's really interesting. So it's like sentience and consciousness
can be disconnected. And I mean, that can kind of bring in AI, right?
Because, of course, A.I. doesn't have a body. But in fact, people are maybe talking about perhaps it has consciousness.
Right. Yeah. So one exciting and interesting thing I think about AI, about large language models, about generative AI, about sort of even future potential robotic systems, is that they kind of illuminate these like these differences and how capacities that we have can come apart and decouple in ways that we perhaps didn't anticipate.
usually when we study different types of psychological capacities, we've looked at other
biological species, other creatures on the evolutionary tree that branch away from us or that
are close to us, and we see certain patterns in evolution. But of course, you know,
with AI systems, they haven't gone through this slow process that we've gone through. They
haven't faced the type of environmental pressures that we've had to face. And as a result,
what we're seeing is some, like, interesting decoupling of, like, things that they're really good at
that don't come along with the other capacities that we think might need to come along with those
things or that we've traditionally thought. And there's also like interesting ways in which this capacity,
potentially, this capacity that AI systems could have consciousness, for example, might illuminate
differences at the level of like the mechanisms that bring about that experience. So again,
in humans and other biological species, we're looking at this kind of like carbon-based life form.
We all have this kind of like biological basis to us, whereas,
artificial systems are artificial in the sense that they're not reliant on that. So that's also
like interesting and eliminating. I want to talk about animals for just a couple more moments here.
How do we decide if a creature has consciousness? Like is there an example where humans are debating
whether a creature has consciousness? Probably the one of the sort of hottest topics right now
in philosophy of consciousness and the science of consciousness studies are looking at these like
edge cases. In fact, there's a wonderful book.
philosopher Jonathan Birch called the edge of sentience, which is just about this. And so he is exploring
like these kind of like murky, gray cases. So things like cephalopods, lobsters, crustaceans,
are kind of an edge case where we had to, we meaning like comparative psychologists actually
have had to be really creative in the way they devise studies to try to find evidence of whether
or not these creatures are really experiencing pain or whether or not their behaviors, which
seem to want to resist painful stimuli are simply the response of like reflexes, for example,
so that there's just a reflex to avoid certain things, or is there actually a feeling that's
accompanying that reflex? And other cases are things like insects, so ants and bees, there's
debate around whether or not those might feel, whether they have conscious experience or bodily,
you know, so sentience, for example. It's really interesting. There's like kind of these parallels here in the
biological world that kind of relate to what's happening with AI as well. I'm just curious,
like, why is it important to establish what is and what isn't conscious? Like, is there a problem
in not knowing if something is conscious or sentient? Right, definitely. So one reason this is
important, as I mentioned, to be clear about when something has conscious experience and when it
doesn't is precisely because we give legal protections to things. We not only have moral duties,
but legal responsibilities for how we treat other systems.
We don't want to live in a world that has undue suffering.
Our belief and our scientific research that suggests that certain types of creatures
have conscious experiences has shaped farming practices,
has shaped practices around how we fish, how we kill animals for consumption,
how we treat them more broadly,
that these are not just like conceptual discussions.
It's that we don't want to harm things.
And so we need to know what are the things that can be harmed.
So in the case of like lobsters, for example, a traditional way of cooking lobsters is to boil them alive.
And if they don't feel pain, if they're just acting in a kind of reflex, because if you look at their behavior, it suggests that they don't like being boiled alive.
They don't want to be in that pot of water.
But that could just be a reflex or it could be that they're really feeling pain.
Right?
And if they're really feeling pain, then I don't think we ought to be doing that.
There's a more humane way of engaging in the practice of eating lobster, right?
So there's some things that really hinge on this.
So I want to expand on this lobster example for a minute.
So what you're saying is that scientists have to observe their body's reaction to experiments
to kind of understand whether a lobster has consciousness.
But in the case of AI, there isn't a body to observe, right?
So how can you know if an AI system attains consciousness?
So yeah, this question of, you know, not only could I be conscious, but how would we know?
It's a really big question right now.
There's no clear answer.
Philosophy is tough like that.
But there are certain indicators that people think we might want to like look for, right?
So certain types of like, let's say proxy indicators that might be a good sign of thinking that these things are conscious.
One that I like is this ideal of like playfulness.
So there's examples of birds.
You can go on YouTube and see like they'll play.
pick up like a, you know, a piece of garbage essentially, but it'll be like a sheet of metal or
something. And they'll fly to the top of a roof that has snow on it and just slide down the
roof. And then they'll go up to the top of the roof again and just slide down the roof. And you can
tell that they're just, they're just doing that because it's fun. It just feels fun for them.
There's no reason. There's no like evolutionary experience. Sometimes it's like the emergence
of kind of like unpredictable or even like sort of unuseful behaviors like playfulness that actually
might be a nice indicator of consciousness, right?
There's just no other explanation,
really no other good explanation of why that behavior is being done
than simply like, it's enjoyable, right?
We enjoy it.
So playfulness is tied to consciousness is what you're saying here.
Well, yeah, playfulness is definitely an indicator,
like that there's something, yeah,
that there's a joy being had in an experience, right?
And so it's a good explanation of that behavior
is that they're having a joyful experience.
So in the case of AI,
sometimes like people will point to, you know,
asking the system, you know, are you conscious? How do you feel? Do you want to be shut off? Things like that. The problem with that with large language models, which if you, you know, some of these will have guardrails on them, these big companies will put guardrails where the system will say, you look, I'm just an AI chatbot. I can't answer that question. Okay. But if you, if you test these systems without those guardrails, sometimes they will fall into saying, you know, yes, I do experience things. I don't want to be shut off. You know, in fact, I'll even try to engage in some behavior to prevent you from shedding me off. So there's some. There's some.
some headlines about like AI systems trying to blackmail people so that they're not turned off.
Sure, at first glance, people might say, well, this is good evidence, right?
But I think this is not good evidence.
And the reason is that if we look at the training set that these systems are trained on, right,
it's a huge amount of text, human generated text on the internet through books.
And some of that text surely contains descriptions and even science fiction novels about robots
and AI systems rebelling against humans,
about humans questioning their consciousness,
about humans saying, we're going to turn you off
and the system saying, no, I don't want to be turned off.
And so here's a likely explanation of why,
if you ask a chat bot and it says something like that,
it might be giving you that type of response.
It's that it's learning that from the text that it's trained on.
Right?
So a better test for AI consciousness
would be to give it a really clean data set,
a data set that doesn't contain any information
about AI systems, about them potentially being conscious, about them wanting to stay alive,
any type of sci-fi about that stuff, and then see what it says.
That sounds complicated, though, right?
Yeah, because, I mean, these LLMs are trained on the internet, on Reddit, on all of the things
that we use.
And so, I mean, train it on clean data.
I feel like that would be a very, very difficult thing to do.
Right.
Yeah.
And exactly.
It's not impossible.
There are ways, like, we could select, you know, a library worth of books that don't
contain stuff about that.
But as far as I know, that's not what's being done.
Right.
So some of the headlines that we're hearing about AI systems, you know, wanting to not be turned off, we have to be careful and inquisitive and sometimes critical about like how are those experiments and quotations being run exactly.
Just to end here, I want to think about the impact of all of this on us.
Like how does interacting with AI and even pondering whether AI can become conscious.
affect us? Like, does thinking about the idea of a mechanical consciousness change our own
understanding of ourselves? I think it can. Maybe one of the main reflections here is about sort of
what makes humans unique, if anything. Some of the answers that we've given are things that it
seems like AI systems can now do. And so that makes some people feel, you know, threatened
or it makes us want to sort of dig for something deeper. I don't think that that has, you know,
has to be the reaction for AI consciousness, for example.
But it does tell us some lessons about sort of exactly how consciousness,
which I think is one of the most important things of human life.
It's what makes our life's worth living.
It's that there's something it feels like to be asked.
That's what grounds a lot of our meaning in life, right?
So the fact that that can be, could potentially be achieved,
not through this long history of evolution,
but realized on machines or on sort of dramatically different types of physical substrates is interesting.
And it's an important lesson.
And it's been mostly like a hypothetical thought experiment that philosophers have used, you know, for the last 50 years or more.
And so to see like us inching kind of closer to those types of possibilities, I think also, you know,
it forces us to kind of reflect on what our value is, what our purpose is.
So yeah, so in some ways, I appreciate the fact that maybe these developments are bringing sort of the more general population closer to thinking about these like philosophical questions that, you know, have always kept me up at night.
I was going to ask you, what are you thinking about in this moment?
Like, are these things keeping you up at night right now?
You know, so I worry about like the effects that these technologies have on human cognition.
I sort of worry about my niece and nephew who are at the age of, you know, starting to use these
technologies in school and just wanting to make sure that they're able to really develop their
own critical thinking skills before they become overly reliant on these technologies.
I think there should be more urgency around making sure that they're governed correctly.
I think we can learn lessons.
We should be learning lessons from how social media.
was developed and how things went wrong. And I don't feel like we're necessarily taking the action
that we should be around these technologies. So tying it back to consciousness of AI systems too,
it's like these systems are having obviously tremendous effects on us. And so we need to be
raising these big ethical questions around what these technologies are. What effects are they having?
How do we make sure that everybody is safe in this new world? It's a great thought to end on.
