Starting point is 00:00:08 Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Delta Flyers journey through the wormhole with Quark, Dax, and their good friends, Tom and Harry. Join us as we make our way through episodes of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Your host for today are my fellow Trek actors, Terry Farrell, Robert Duncan McNeil, and myself, Garrett Wong. Myself, our Irish buddy Gawa. Maybe I was thinking about eating some type of cereal that has leprechauns in it. Oh, lucky charms. Do you really eat Lucky Charms? No, I don't.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Oh, yeah. Maybe. Maybe I do. I'm cuckoo for Cocoa Pucko. Broody pebbles are my jam. Actually, Captain Crunch used to be my favorite. Really? Right?
Starting point is 00:00:57 Yes. There was Crunchberry and the Crunch Peanut ones. Remember? My mom didn't buy it often. Was there something called Frankenpuffs or? Frankenberry. Frankenberry. That was so good.
Starting point is 00:01:12 Frankenberry cereal. My gosh. The 70s were so bad for our bodies. So delicious. My go-to was cocoa pebbles, and not just one bowl. I would, because, you know how you eat the cereal and there's still milk left? Then I would pour more cereal in to fill up on top of the milk that was left, and it was now chocolate milk because of the cocoa pebbles.
Starting point is 00:01:31 Yes, of course it was. It was delicious. Oh, God, I loved it. Oh, you know what I do now is I use that. You know, Elizabeth's like granola? I put that on ice cream at night. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:43 And if there's leftover cereal, I just had more ice cream. My mom used to do that once in a while is a treat. Put a scoop of ice cream in our raisin brand. Oh, that sounds amazing. Yeah, it's really good. I can't eat raisin brand anymore, but. Which makes me think. You know, you know what the froze, what is it, fried ice cream that you can get
Starting point is 00:02:07 at a Mexican restaurant where they take a ball of ice cream. They put batter around it and fry that. You could do a batter. Yes, you could do a batter of crunched up raisin bran around it. And then you see what I'm saying? Or the Elizabeth's, which is gluten-free. Yes. The vanilla almond has six grams of protein, too, and I would like to add to that.
Starting point is 00:02:27 And this is not a paid ad for Elizabeth's granola. Although, if there was a commercial to be made, I would be so happy to do it. Elizabeth's granola, if you're listening, Terry would be a big fan of doing ads for you. Oh, so good. And now she has one with flakes and they're crunchy. So it's, we add the milk. It takes a minute for, they don't get soggy right away like Raisin Brand. You should be the spokeswoman.
Starting point is 00:02:53 You should be the spokeswoman for Elizabeth's. You really should be. Or you should just make your own granola and call it Terry's. Your ice cream that you get, Terrefair, is it a specific brand? Do you have to have haggendaz? Do you have, what do you go for? for ice cream. I am suddenly into Aldens. I've never heard of that company. Aldens. I am kind of picky about ice cream. Hagenas, vanilla, out of this world. Obviously. And the rum raisin. I like rum raisin too.
Starting point is 00:03:22 You know what? When you come visit, I have an ice cream maker and I will make you any kind of ice cream you want. You will. So good. Now that is an enticement. Everyone tuning in today. Now you know the way to tarry Feryl's heart. Ice cream. Ice cream. Yes. Keep that bottle of alcohol.
Starting point is 00:03:42 I'll take the ice cream. Next time Terry's at a convention on stage, just toss her pints of ice cream. Just throw them up on stage. I'm going to tell you. Chuck them at her. Because we spoke about this on this podcast, this is going to already, this is going to happen. I already know now that there will be fans. Somebody's going to bring you some ice cream.
Starting point is 00:04:02 They're going to bring you ice cream. It's going to be all melted, though. That's the best kind of ice cream. cream. They're going to have to bring a cooler with ice in it. Alden's is your go-to. Well, it's a new one because it's also one of those where there aren't, everything in it is natural. Oh, got it. And it's good. It's dense. Okay. But not everyone can find Aldens in their local store in the country, I'm guessing. It's more of a, so I'm just telling the fans out there. Do you want to see the label? Yeah, I'd love to see the label. But Hogandaz is the way to go. So it's got all of this.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Oh, I've seen Aldens. Yeah. Alden's. I've had it. Organic French vanilla ice cream. I love it. Yeah. No GMOs. USDA organic, which is probably super important with the cows. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:46 Yes. Because, you know, they don't have all those hormones added. Ingredients. Milk, cream, cane sugar, egg yolks, vanilla extract, guar gum, locust bean gum, a natto extract for color. Allergent statement contains milk and eggs. I have some gargum in my pantry that I add to my homemade ice cream to thicken it up a little bit. Yeah, I add it to my protein shakes. I think we have some birthdays to talk about right now.
Starting point is 00:05:17 We have Jenny B. August the 6th. Happy birthday, Jenny B. Happy birthday, Jenny B. Hope it's awesome. Happy birthday, Jenny. Preston M. August 9th. Happy birthday, Preston M.
Starting point is 00:05:31 Happy birthday, Preston M. Happy birthday, Preston. One other thing, we have to mention it. everybody listening is that we've got some new bonus material. We're going to be trying out starting today for all those Patreon members, listen up because we're going to try to guess what the next episode is about based only on the title. And we're going to do that every week. And if you remember Terry today what the next episode title is about, you can't tell us
Starting point is 00:06:00 because Garrett and I are going to guess. And if you don't remember, you get to guess as well. Perfect. My haiku for you are cordially invited is something like this. Here we go. Wedding earlier, Sorella drives Dax Bonkers. Finally married. I like it.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Nice. Yes. Bonkers. I like bonkers. I do like bonkers too. I chose crazy. In the beginning, I said, no, I'm not going to go with crazy. So I'm going to go with bonkers instead.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Yeah. Yeah, it felt bonkers. Oh, my goodness. It did a little bit. What a huge. episode for you. My goodness. Big, big one for you, for sure. And very different shades of decks that we've never seen before, which is amazing six years in to see this character kind of go through new things like that. So, yeah, it was fun. You know, because every time we see
Starting point is 00:06:58 you with Wharf before this, you are calm, composed, or you're trying to cheer him up and make him laugh. And you're the one in control. And we never see, you know, when things are bad. And he's, Here we finally see what things get really bad. I think Riza was the only other time. But you were very patient. Dax was very patient. She stayed steady through that. Whereas this time, you're just like, oh, I lost my shizzle.
Starting point is 00:07:25 I mean, in Riza, you didn't punch anybody. So, you know, I mean, there was no. Nobody pulled a knife on me either. That is true. You know, it's one of those things you go, please say that. Because I can't stand it in shows where there's a tidbit of the reason why the whole thing started and nobody says it. And the good guy gets in trouble and you're like, but he didn't start it. Yeah. Yeah. No, it was good that they pointed that out. Do you have any poetry for us today?
Starting point is 00:07:53 I do. I'm exciting. Are you? I'm kind of scared. Here we go. You are cordially invited. Freshly won freedom. Right. Lovers swoon in the light. Internal struggles with problems. yet love conquers all who abide to their deepest truth, the spiritual journey and private sleuth. Oh, you fit sleuth in there. I thought it's kind of odd, but they are internally figuring out what's really going on. Yes, they are. Investigating their inner life that way.
Starting point is 00:08:32 They're feelings. Yeah. The stuff that your pride and your ego block you from. I love that. That was great. Thank you. I've got a little limerick for it. goes something like this. There once was a trill named Dax, who loved a Klingon named
Starting point is 00:08:47 Worf to the Max. Sirella knocked her around, but Dax stood her ground, and the wedding concluded with the traditional attacks. That's awesome. Ding, ding, winner, winter, chicken dinner. Oh, thank you. Oh, yeah, that was awesome. You got to start every single one with their once You did an amazing job. Thank you, thank you, you. We have a Patreon-submitted poetry winner, and here we go. It's not a haiku. It's Tonka.
Starting point is 00:09:20 It's called Tonka. The pattern is five syllables, seven syllables, five syllables, seven syllables, seven syllables. Five-seven-five-seven. This is submitted by Scott Bowling. I've never heard of Tonka or Tanca, however you want to pronounce it before. Me neither. Yeah, but here we go. But in all fairness, I'm not a literary major.
Starting point is 00:09:39 Okay. Just thought I should share. Thank you for sharing with us. We appreciate it. All right. Here's Scott Bowling's Tonka. For this episode, you are cordially invited. Worf, sentimental.
Starting point is 00:09:51 Dax, tested and defiant. Chief and Doc, hungry. Cisco, now the wise old man. Worf Dax hearts now beat as one. Nice. Wow. Very nice. Very nice.
Starting point is 00:10:05 And also, when I mention, too, don't forget that, you know, Odo and Kira. Oh, yes. Also have, it's interesting, their parallel love story happening. They have a parallel love story in the toilet, by the way. In the toilet. Yeah, no, they're in my closet. I thought it was a closet. Is it a toilet?
Starting point is 00:10:27 No, it's my walking closet. They're sitting on toilets. I'm telling you, we'll talk about it when we get there. I watched part two before I saw this. That was an amazing episode. And when Odo saves her, oh my God. And she asked why, and he goes, I think you know why. It was beautiful. Anyway. Well, I just want to thank Scott Bowling for introducing us to Tonka poetry. I looked up a little, it's referred to as song poetry. It's a little more maybe lyrical in a way or the rhyming structure than a haiku, which can be abstract sometimes. And with the three lines of haiku can sometimes be, you know, impressionistic, whereas the tonneousy, whereas the tautonism.
Starting point is 00:11:11 Tonka is known as being a little more lyrical, maybe its length and things like that. But yeah, that's great. That's amazing. Yeah, but Tonka. Now, I kept thinking, why does that sound familiar to me? Tonka toys. Yes, but go even further. And if you add another syllable in the beginning, if you say to Tonka, that is the Sioux word for buffalo.
Starting point is 00:11:38 Oh, really? Learned from dances with wolves. Are you serious? And that stuck with you? It did. They're teaching Kevin Costner and they're like, Tatanka, ta-tunka. And so I remembered that.
Starting point is 00:11:49 Oh, my gosh. Wow. The Patreon submitted poetry honorable mention. Yes. Is a limerick submitted by Steph Davies. Spirits on the station are surprisingly high. Martak knows a lot of paperwork is certainly nigh. Thumbs down for replicated wax.
Starting point is 00:12:09 Sirella attacks Dax. Wharf and Jedzia are happy. It is not a good day to die. Very nice. Yay. Good job. All right. A little bit of facts here.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Written by Ronald D. Moore. Directed by David Livingston. Guest stars J.G. Hezla as Mottok. Mark Warden as Alexander Rojenko. Shannon Cochran as Sorella. Chase Masterson as Lita. Aaron Eisenberg is nog. Max Gredenchik is wrong.
Starting point is 00:12:40 A little bit of trivia. Paramount's promotion of this episode included an invitation, which noted Paramount cordially invites you to bear witness to the exchange of nuptials between two Star Trek series regulars for the first time in Star Trek history. Wow. I did not know that. Really? I thought that Marina Surtis and Jonathan Franks got married on NextGen.
Starting point is 00:13:05 Oh. In a movie or in the show? I don't know. I don't know, I didn't watch every episode of their show. Or maybe it was in the movies. Maybe, yeah. And then Paris and Belana get married, but that's after this, I'm guessing. Yeah, it's after.
Starting point is 00:13:21 Yeah. Wow, I didn't know that. So first to kiss a girl, first to get married. So many firsts. Yeah. You guys want to know what the working title was of this one? Yes. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:34 Once upon a wedding. That was the original title. Really? Which is kind of cute. It is cute. I like it. I really do. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:43 Another little bit of background trivia. So Ron Moore, he saw this as an episode which would allow him to correct an inaccurate impression of Klingon society, which he himself had created. On TNG, Moore had felt that he had unintentionally shoved Klingon women into the background, promoting the view that they were unimportant to the proper functioning of society. And this dates back to the TNG season four episode Redemption, where it is. revealed that women cannot sit on the High Council, the Clingon High Council. So in subsequent Klingon episodes, women had virtually no role, and the whole society ended up appearing to be completely male-dominated, almost like Ferengi society. Yes. Oh, good point. So this was something that Moore was keen to rectify in this episode. And as such, he determined that if men rule the council,
Starting point is 00:14:32 then women rule the houses. And that the mistress of a great house wields unchallenged power in terms of the functioning of that house, thus restoring a degree of balance to cling on gender roles, which I love. I'm all for gender equality, and thank God Ron Moore did that. She was magnificent. Oh, my goodness.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Wasn't she? I loved working with her. She was fantastic. Yeah. I was watching that scene. I was thinking, now why did I punch her again? I mean, I...
Starting point is 00:15:03 The knife. Yeah, and so when the moment happened, I was like, oh, yeah. The original air data, This was November 10th, 1997. That's a day after my birthday. That's right, Robbie. Happy belated birthday, Robert.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Thank you. Thank you. Yes. Well, this first scene, we've got Cisco up in the promenade balcony. He's looking down below to the lower level. But I do have to say this was a very ambitious steady cam. Well, complex hybrid shot. I'll describe it.
Starting point is 00:15:36 Oh, yes. This is where I was like, is this one? One shot? All one shot. I thought it was amazing. It was amazing. You know, pulling through the promenade over this captain's log about returning to Deep Space Nine and everyone's happy and celebrating. And yes, there's still a war.
Starting point is 00:15:54 But they've got the, you know, the DS9 near the wormhole, very strategic position. We've got the station back. Mm-hmm. Yep. And everybody seems very happy. So it's kind of like, not that the war's over, but there's a celebration going on. And the camera starts in the promenade, tilts down. So you see all of this background and you see mourn kissing a woman there.
Starting point is 00:16:21 You see all kinds of celebration. But it kind of pulls back and then goes with another woman and turns to a 180, the other direction. Then the steady cam must have stepped onto a crane. because the shot rises up. So it was definitely a hybrid shot. Steadicam and the operator will then step onto a platform on a crane where they'll lock in somehow. And then the crane lifts that operator up and it pushed into a close up of Cisco.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Very ambitious opening shot, David Livingston. Good for you. Yeah. Yeah. Bravo, David. I was like, what show my watching? This is looking so exciting. I know, very cinematic, big.
Starting point is 00:17:06 It took a lot of time I have no doubt to light to block the background, to make it safe for the operator. Those can be very dangerous shots when you're stepping on or off. Yeah, and they probably have to trust everyone around them. Yes. Because they're kind of blind to anything else but what they're looking at, right? Yeah. I didn't catch the mourn kiss.
Starting point is 00:17:26 Who was he kissing? A background person. But it was a human? Was it an alien? Did you see? I think it was a human. Or Bajoran, maybe. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:33 Yeah. Yeah, it's hard to tell. You have to go back and watch. I'm going to have to watch. And we do know from prior episodes that Dax finds more and very attractive with his little hairs coming off. Yes, five hairs. He's working in there. Cisco comes back in.
Starting point is 00:17:53 They go through their morning routine. Morning routine, but they're both very happy to be back. Lots to do. But in the end, Kira says, and Martak's waiting for you. and he said, I think I'll start with that first. And she's like, yep, I guessed you would. So I again want to talk about the chemistry with Martak and Cisco. Yes.
Starting point is 00:18:14 They seem to really have great chemistry as characters, as actors. I love watching the scenes with them together. I'd love seeing them if they did a Shakespeare play together would be awesome. Oh, would be so... The two of them. Yeah, I agree. Cisco walks in his office, though. Martaq seems grumpy at the top.
Starting point is 00:18:34 He's very upset about something, and we learn that Cisco's congratulating him because he's now the new Supreme Commander of the Ninth Fleet. And Martak's like, yeah, you know what that means? Paperwork. More paperwork. He wants to be in battle. And Cisco doesn't let him out of it. Like everything Martok's throwing at him, Cisco's underplaying it and congratulating him. Yes.
Starting point is 00:19:01 Yeah. That's sort of very 20th century to say paperwork. They should have said pad did it to work, you know, or something like that. Oh, that's true. I didn't think about that. Right. Yeah. There's no paper.
Starting point is 00:19:11 There's no paper. Nobody's writing on paper. So everything is on a pad. It's a lot of reports to make or, yeah, something like that would have been good. A lot of reports to file. To say that, right? Yeah. There you go.
Starting point is 00:19:23 And you're not saying paperwork. Too bad. We weren't in the writing room. We would have helped them. Well, Martuk mentions that when they were in battle, all worth talked about was the wedding. And also he mentions that Alexander, Wharf's son was there. And Cisco says, oh, I've never met him.
Starting point is 00:19:39 Martuk says, well, he's a fine boy. Eager has the heart of his father, but not the best soldier I've ever seen. And Cisco looks at him like, hmm, that's curious that he's not a great soldier. And off of that, we cut to Quarks, where Alexander is very enthusiastic. At first, honestly, I didn't even know
Starting point is 00:19:58 if it was the same actor. Okay, I agree with you. Me too. Me too. My feeling was someone else did his makeup this day than the prior episode where we saw him. And it's different. Well, and the lighting's different. That's what I thought it was the makeup that was different for me. Oh, I thought it was his performance was so, because in the previous episode he had been very withdrawn and kind of angry, quiet young man. And now he's this enthusiastic, you know, energetic. It was just totally different. Yeah. Well, now he feels loved by his father loved and accepted. So that would change your personality a lot. I liked his performance in this. I think the base makeup they used on him was darker. It almost like this looked like this was in this episode. Yeah, like this is the Alexander Rojenko that went to Hawaii and got a tan for a week and a half and came back. Also, you know, I think the thing that's most important, I mean, I think it might have been a different makeup artist that makes complete sense, especially with how many, in both of those episodes, how many,
Starting point is 00:21:00 extra characters we had in alien makeup. Right. But also it's if you can't match it, maybe they forgot to take a Polaroid that happens from time to time. If you can't match it, make it better. Did it take you out of the scene? It did a little bit in the beginning because I literally thought it was a different actor. I was like, whoa, this is not the Alexander I remember.
Starting point is 00:21:23 A little teeny bit. Yeah, it didn't ruin it. It didn't ruin it for me either, no. But I did think, wait a minute. There was something about his eyes, too. I don't know what it was. Something was different. Well, he's joking about, you know, his latest mistake, disaster aboard the Rataran.
Starting point is 00:21:39 And he reveals he's going to be transferred to the Yavang very soon. And then he goes to get some more food or something. And then cork pops in and reminds Wharf, you know, offer still stands. You can have the wedding here at my place. And Dax realizes, well, Well, if Alexander's leaving, maybe we should move this wedding up. At first, Wharf seems resistant, but then he surprises Alexander in the end by asking him to be the sword bearer or the ring bearer. Yeah, because we're still in war and we don't know when we'd see him again or if we'd see him again.
Starting point is 00:22:18 I like that name of that ship, the Yavang. The Yavang. Or the Yavang. I haven't changed my last name, Garrett Yavang or Yavang. Okay, so we go to the TurboLift where Dax. where Dax and Kira are talking about the wedding, and Kira's wondering why every detail is designed around Warf's wishes. Why not Dax?
Starting point is 00:22:37 What about what Dax wants? And Dax explains that, you know, Worf has dreamed of this traditional Klingon wedding since he was a kid. And he's very sentimental about Klingon rituals, even though he's tough on the outside. So, you know, she's defending him a bit there. Well, also, I've been made. married five times in the different lifetimes.
Starting point is 00:22:59 That's true. You step off the turbo lift, and as you step off and continue this conversation, Odo appears down the hallway, and he freezes like a deer in the headlights, locked around and heads off. He doesn't head off. He scurries away is what he does. It's so funny. It's very funny.
Starting point is 00:23:15 And I'm like, what? Is that my imagination? Yeah. I got to say in this episode that your tone and timing, I see why you're so good. at comedy. You're very good at, at the comedic, kind of naturalistic. It's just, yeah, it's very good. I totally, I was, I was feeling a lot of the Terry Farrell comedy chops. And that moment in particular, it was really good. Thank you. It was so much fun. Kira says, yes, that was weird. She acknowledged this, yes. Poto jumping down the side hall is weird. But
Starting point is 00:23:56 we've been avoiding each other since the Dominion left the station. And she basically says, I don't really want to talk about it right now. As a shapeshifter, he should have just turned into the carpet or into a bulkhead or something like that instead of... Or shut up into the ceiling. Just flown off as a bird. Yeah. Yeah. Like a cartoon character with a little sound effect.
Starting point is 00:24:17 We go to the briefing room next and Worf has gathered. Cisco is there. Bashir's there. Brian's there. Martak's there. and Worf is announcing that he wants them to accompany him on the Calhaya. And it is a four-day Klingon pre-wedding ritual for the groom. It's time of spiritual reflection and male bonding.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Basically, it's a Klingon bachelor party. And that's what it sounds like at this point. Yeah, that's our assumption. And I think it was really smart of Worf not to let them know all of what was And the gang's very into this, especially Bashir and Miles. They're really into this. They can't wait for the party. Not really far from the truth for either one of them. In real life. Yeah, the Englishman and the Irishman. Let's go to the pub. Let's have a party. Yes, exactly. Yeah. And Cisco asks Martak what Dax is going to be doing.
Starting point is 00:25:19 Martak says that she'll be spending the four days with his wife. She'll be taking a different kind of journey with my wife. Oh, how little we knew at this point. A different journey. That sounds pleasant. A different kind of hell. Yeah. Well, we didn't know it was going to be hell.
Starting point is 00:25:36 We thought, that's going to be a nice journey. Both of them seemed good until you meet Sorolla. That's right. That's right. Yes, which happens next. We go to the airlock. Martak is waiting there with Cisco. and Martak is explaining that Dax has to earn the approval of Sorella
Starting point is 00:25:52 before she can join the House of Martock through marriage and Sorella arrives immediately insults Marta. I thought you were dead basically is what she says. You've gained weight, your hair's going gray. Yes, exactly. Very funny dynamic in their marriage. And JG is just excellent in this episode. Yep, I didn't think about it until now,
Starting point is 00:26:14 but the name's Sorella. I'm wondering if the influence was Cruella Deville for the name. Surrella. Wow. Corrella. Yeah, maybe. After some insults and demanding to see Jadzia Dax, Sorella heads off. And Martak's response as he gazes at her walking away is, oh, magnificent woman.
Starting point is 00:26:37 So funny. So funny. It was. And Cisco's like. Yeah. What? And also I want to point out that David Livingston shot Sorella from a low hero angle, like a superhero angle. She was very imposing and intimidating.
Starting point is 00:26:58 The camera was down low, making her look more powerful. Even taller, majestic. And then the angle, the raking angle on Martak and Cisco was from up high, making them look smaller. Wow. So it was just a subtle directorial thing. thing that he did that I thought was very cool, very smart, a little detail. I love that you've shared that. Yes, a little bit of trivia.
Starting point is 00:27:22 J.G. Hertzler and Shannon Cochran, who played Sorella, based their performances in their scenes together on Benedict and Beatrice in Shakespeare's Much Adieu About Nothing. Oh. Oh, wow. That's the name of Armand's dogs. That's right. It is. I think they always name their dogs after a Shakespeare character.
Starting point is 00:27:43 The character. I think they mentioned that. Yeah, Beatrice and Ben. We cut to Dax's quarters next. Dax is preparing for Sorrell's arrival. Worf is, you know, he's very nervous. He's nitpicking over details. And Dax kind of teases him about his obsession with Klingon traditions.
Starting point is 00:28:03 You know, he's obsessed with the Varkhamma candles. He's like, you're these real varhamma candles. And Dax is teasing him like, yeah, sure, I traveled to Kronos. I captured three targs and the Haramar Mountains made the ritual sacrifice. Sure, Wharf. I did all that and these are real. Very funny. More comedy. Like I thought your performance tonally was, in this episode more than any so far, I was like, oh, I see why she has done sitcoms. Like you've got that sort of gear that you can go to. It was great. In drama, I think is easier. comedy within drama.
Starting point is 00:28:44 I mean, I like dromedy. Yeah, better than the one to punch. Yeah, the hard comedy of sitcom jokes and that kind of thing. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's a more difficult thing to master. This is more like real life, funny. Yes, exactly.
Starting point is 00:29:01 As they kind of banter about the candles and traditions, Sorella arrives and immediately dismisses Worf. About these candles. I'm like, she won't. come on. She's not going to get on me about that. And she does. Immediately, she kicks work out, criticizes the candles. And it's very clear she's going to make the next four days very difficult. Yeah. And she misunderstands what Dax is saying because, you know, Dax says, I like a challenge.
Starting point is 00:29:30 And Cyrilla's like, I will not have my authority challenged by you. And so everything is rubbing the wrong way here. It's how she took it negative was so perplexing. Yeah. She's definitely a glass is half full. person in this scene at least. Mm-hmm. We go to the Rataran Ready Room next, and Worf is confronting Martak about Sorella's, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:55 hostility and her meanness to Dax, and Martak is explaining to Worf that his wife distrusts outsiders joining the Klingon family. She just is not for that at all. Martak does agree, that Dax is very worthy to join the family.
Starting point is 00:30:13 He ultimately refuses to get involved or intervene with Sorilla's judgment. So that kind of goes to what you're talking about, Ron Moore, trying to, these women cling on house, they run it. It's their show. With an iron fist. But also, I like so much in this scene where Martaq shares that she doesn't particularly like me, but she also doesn't particularly like me. But she also doesn't particularly like Worf either.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Yeah. It's like, what? Yeah. There's a joke at the end where Martuk says, I had every right to bring you into the family. Worf, Martuk says, and there's nothing she can do about that. And Worf's kind of, it's a backhanded compliment. And Worf's like, oh, that's really comforting.
Starting point is 00:31:03 And Martuk's like, oh, that was funny. No, you know, who says you don't have a sense of people? humor and then he starts laughing and he's like, oh, ha ha ha, ha, he laughs and the camera's pushing in. It was, it was very funny. It was a sweet moment. Very sweet. And I love how Doran delivered that, that line, too. How comforting.
Starting point is 00:31:27 Yeah, it was great. Next, we go into our classic Star Trek cave with some bonfires or candles or, I don't know, you know, fires burning. There was like a pit. There was like this big, huge fire pit. Very ceremonial. Were they Varhamma candles, Robbie? I don't know if they were Varhamma.
Starting point is 00:31:46 This felt like fires more than... Yeah. I wonder how they did it. It had to be propane because you can't do open fires on a stage. Yeah, and it needs to be controlled. Yeah. That's why, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:59 Yeah. Our stage caught on fire, Terry, during a photo shoot. Seriously. Yeah, it was Yahoo magazine, and it was Rick Berman on the cover of it. So they were doing his cover shoot. He was standing at my station at Ops. The lights that the magazine had set up actually were so hot. They actually set the scrim.
Starting point is 00:32:17 There was like a cloth covering over our bridge. And that caught on fire. So the whole bridge started to catch on fire. That must have been scary. But there was only a couple people. It was me and Ethan Phillips that were sitting down eating Friday dinner. And he was facing towards the bridge. And I was facing him.
Starting point is 00:32:34 And he goes, is the bridge supposed to be on fire? And I was like, what? And I turned around. And then that's when I saw Rick Berman see the fire. And he literally let out a scream like this. He went like that and ran off. I'd never seen it was crazy. And then, of course, people came in with fire extinguishers.
Starting point is 00:32:53 Of course, you'd never seen him afraid or vulnerable before. Never, never seen him like that. No. Yeah. It scared me. I was like, oh, my God. You know, there goes our show. Well, it could have been a disaster.
Starting point is 00:33:02 But they got the fire department, our little Paramount Fire Station. Yeah. Came over in their golf cart fire truck. Rock. Right. Bobby, Billy Pete's broke the, he got the fire extinguisher from the set and just started doing it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:33:16 Love Billy Pete. We love him. I know. What a nice guy. All right. So we're in the cave and they're beginning to call Haya, the Klingon wedding ritual. And Wharf presents ceremonial clubs to them with these cushions on the end. And it's explained that they're used in a symbolic attack on the bride and groom.
Starting point is 00:33:38 the end of the wedding ceremony. The group also learns that this is the first day of this four-day ceremony. And today we're fasting. Until the ceremony. Yes, until the wedding. And there's five more ordeals. Today is just the fasting part. You're going to keep fasting. And then you've got to do blood. You've got to do pain, sacrifice, anguish, and death. How fast would you go, uh-uh, blank this? Yes. Blank this. I'm going to corks, especially Sadega El Fidel. Are you kidding me? I know. The man's a reed. He doesn't have an ounce of body fat on him. He couldn't survive four days of not eating. Yeah. Their reaction when they're told this was very funny. Wasn't it? Yeah. Yeah. Well, even our reaction as audience members is funny because
Starting point is 00:34:33 we don't, we did not expect this would be the bachelor party. No. No. But when you really think about Klingons, they're like warriors of like, yeah, it's a good day to die. It's part for the course. I can't imagine they're going to be soft on each other with this. Right. Yeah. When he says blood, pain, sacrifice, anguish, and death, Bashir's response says, well, sounds like marriage, all right. He's very funny.
Starting point is 00:34:58 And then O'Brien is like, how would you know? So, very funny. It was. It was cute. They have great banter throughout this whole thing. So good. So good. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:10 They're very funny. They're always very funny, but this one was particularly, like they were cast as the goofy sidekicks that, yeah. Yeah, we have more fun to come. Yeah. We go to Quarks next. The bar is getting redecorated into a Klingon-themed wedding spot. And we see this flag, this giant flag going out that Quarks overseeing. Jake arrives.
Starting point is 00:35:36 He's got the great news that the Federation. news service is going to publish some of his stories about being under dominion occupation. And Quark is very impressed until Jake reveals that he's not actually being paid. When Quark says, oh, great, well, since you're not getting paid, uh, wanted you have a drink. Drinks are on the house. Jake's like, really? He goes, no.
Starting point is 00:36:01 Just a figure of speech, which is what Jake had just said. So funny banter about that about getting paid. or not. And then Jake asks about his dad and Quirk reveals that he's at a Klingon Bachelor Party that's in progress. Jake's like, well, what are they doing? And he says, leave it to your imagination. Since you're a writer, you just imagine what they're doing. Everybody thinks this is a great ceremony. Blood, pain, hunger. Next scene is in the, we go back to the cave. Alexander's passed out because it's so hot. The place is, you know.
Starting point is 00:36:41 We open with him passed out, right? Yeah, he's laying on the ground. I thought he had, like, fainted. He hasn't eaten anything either, so he has no food and he's hot. So he passed out. Yeah. Yes. And Rebecca said, as we were watching, she said, mentioned that thank God Tom Harris
Starting point is 00:36:56 didn't have to do this traditional Klingon ceremony to Mary Bolana. So I just want to point out, yes, thank you, Rebecca, for being on Tim Harris here. Yes, because if that was the case, I would have been at your Kalhaya, and I would have either been, I would have been Sid or I would have been Alexander. I would have been Bashir or Alexander just passed out. Yes. And saying, I'm going to kill Tom Paris. They're not there yet. I know.
Starting point is 00:37:24 Yeah, they're not hanging yet, but they will. Sorry. Yeah, they're passed out in the heat and it's the second day and everybody's exhausted. And Martak challenges all the boys that are not. cling on to quit. He's like, you, you don't have to do this. You're not cling on. You're not as tough as us. But Sisko Bishir, Miles, they all refused to quit. I knew that was going to work. Yes. Right. As soon as it's like, well, maybe you're not. I mean, it's like saying in context, you're not man enough to go through what we go through. Yeah. We're stronger men than you,
Starting point is 00:38:04 humans. Isn't that at the end where Martok and Worf bust out in Klingon song? They start singing. Yeah, which I've mentioned I hate Klingon music. I can't stand it. But you did notice, if you listen to it carefully, Martok or J.G. Hertzler has a beautiful singing voice. He does.
Starting point is 00:38:24 Wow. Very high notes. Yeah, the two of them together were really good. Oh, my God. Both of them. Yes. Yeah, they start kind of low and together, you know, A to-cho.
Starting point is 00:38:34 And then J.G. Herzler goes, Hey, he goes opera on us. It was beautiful. Yeah. Did you like that high note I had? I loved it. Thank you. That was a very good demonstration. I want next time I see you, Robbie in person, I want you to do that. I want to record it. And that will be my ringtone for every time you call me. Oh, that's wrong.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Okay. All right. I'll do it. Thanks. Hey, Gary, you know what I did this morning? What? Use an app called 11 Reader to listen to a script while I drove to work, a script that I'm prepping to direct. So you uploaded a PDF to the app and you were able to hear it while you're driving. That's a game changer, Robbie.
Starting point is 00:39:17 Yeah, it's incredible. You can upload your own content like PDFs, docs, you know, fan fiction, whatever you want, or you can listen to best-selling audio books with super realistic voices. It was incredible. I had Bert Reynolds read my script. How would you compare this to other reading apps? that are out there. Oh, I've tried them. I've tried the other apps and you can pay 15 bucks a month. You get one credit, one book or you could use 11 reader where they've got over 200,000 premium titles.
Starting point is 00:39:45 They've got all the best sellers. You know they've got a free plan that packs incredible value and an ultra subscription for only $11 a month. So you start with a free 10 hours of your own content or you can upgrade to Ultra for 11 bucks a month and unlock unlimited uploads plus 20 hours of premium audiobooks every month. That's amazing. It sounds like you're getting more and you're paying less than the others. Yes. And you get Bert Reynolds to read to you. Hey, who's going to argue with that?
Starting point is 00:40:11 Check out 11 reader. Use promo code podcast. That's P-O-D-C-A-S-T and get your first two months for only $1. We go to Dax's quarters next. Dax is holding these buckets. And I have to say a couple things. A, you've got guns in this. I mean, come on.
Starting point is 00:40:34 Did you see Terry's guns? Well, she was working out a lot back then, Robbie. She was super fit. I still have them. She was super fit. Oh, do you have those guns? Okay. I can't show you now because I'm wearing a blouse, but.
Starting point is 00:40:46 Right. I used to have guns. Planting trees and bushes. That'll do it. Yeah, that's been really helpful recently. You had guns, though. You were holding these buckets up and they're smoldering with, like, fire or smoke or something. I don't know what the buckets were doing.
Starting point is 00:41:06 And they weren't as heavy as they were described. Yes. But they were still heavy. There was still weight to them. I wasn't is symmetrically pretending that they were heavy, which is helpful as an actor. You need to see the effort. Yeah. It's interesting because I don't think we've ever seen any type of ritual where someone has to hold up buckets like that in the Klingon world.
Starting point is 00:41:30 But in the world of Kung Fu movies, that's how. Every Kung Fu master trains their disciple. They have to hold heavy buckets of the water and run up a mountain with it. And they have to sweep the leg. They have to sweep the leg. There you go. And they have to wax on and they have to wax off. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:41:51 Did you have to do it three times though? Did you in the Klingon ritual? Did you wax on, wax off? I don't know. We're about to see. But, you know, it was maddening was I'd done it three times. And, you know, she wouldn't have made a Klingon woman do it three times. And she says, well, a Klingon woman wouldn't complain.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Right. So I do it again. Yeah. We end on me trying again. Yeah, pick up the buckets. We're already having this eye contact like, whoa. Oh, it's starting to go off the rails. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:25 We do have a little time cut where it's a little later and the fake traditional candles are burning on the table. at this point when it's casually revealed that Sorella's cherished imperial bloodline is probably a centuries-old lie. Yes, you heard it here. Dax, being the smart, you know, science officer that she is, has done some research. And Sorella's not as royal as she thinks she is. She's not royal. No, she's not. She's descended.
Starting point is 00:43:02 Her grandmother is not her grandmother. No, her grandmother is a concubine. They were all killed and replaced with other people, a different family that adopted all the same names of the original family to give the appearance to the Klingon world that the royalty had survived. So Shainera, the great, great, great, great, great, grandmother was actually the concubine. Is that, am I right about? Was it like her 25th? Oh, long. Grandmother.
Starting point is 00:43:34 Oh, century. Yeah, I got to keep saying greats. Okay. And then Dax is like, but we'll just keep the lie going if you want, very sarcastically. And Sirella's like, just tell the saga. Yeah. Yeah, I definitely stuck a knife in her ribs. Oh, yeah, you did.
Starting point is 00:43:53 You pissed Cruella off big time right there. She didn't like it. Truth tell her. Yep, you got under her skin. we cut back to the promenade and Jake learns that he's invited to Dax's pre-wedding party. He gets congratulated by Kira on becoming a published author in this scene. And then Jake and Kira walking down the promenade, Odo pops out again. Awkward glances, their trademark awkward comedy beat,
Starting point is 00:44:26 pretending like nothing's awkward, but it totally is. He disappears down another hallway. She turns, like, pretends not to even see him. She's like, do, do, do. It's very funny. Oh, man. And then when she turns to avoid Odo, back behind her, they see the Bachelor Party kind of marching back to the holodeck,
Starting point is 00:44:52 or I guess they're going to the holodeck, right? Yeah, they're going to the hollow. cave, the hollow cave. Yeah. For the blood trial. What do you guys think of the wardrobe that the men have to wear? The ceremonial bachelor party work? I liked it. I liked all the wardrobe in this episode. I did too.
Starting point is 00:45:11 To me, it kind of looked like biker vests in a way. I don't know why. I saw that. That's probably why you liked it. Yeah. I knew it. And kind of a monk, like a monk and a biker combined. Yes. A monk and a biker.
Starting point is 00:45:24 It's a miker. It's a miker. A tough munker. Or a bunk, a bunk or a bunk. Oh my gosh. I love that they've got those clubs. They look like cavemen. Worf said way back, they had to carry him around with them the whole time.
Starting point is 00:45:40 Oh, really? Oh, yeah. He says it right. And the first time they have the very first meeting in the cave. Yeah. Yeah. These are for the. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:48 You got to carry them. Of the ceremony. And you have to carry it with you the entire time going through this ritual. Oh, gosh. That's why you see Cisco in corks with it. Here's my question, though. So they say you've got to fast, you've got to do all this painful stuff. But they take breaks.
Starting point is 00:46:07 They go back to their quarters to sleep or something in the four nights because they're, because we see them in the problem. Which I thought was kind of weird, honestly. I did too. Thank you. I thought they were going to stay in the cave the entire time. I did too. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:46:20 That's why I think they cheated. I think they had cookies on their breaks. I don't think he's got these boys. Oh, I think. I made a note. I'm like, if they took breaks to leave, then they had cookies. O'Brien and you, right? You think they didn't have a little glass of whiskey.
Starting point is 00:46:39 Yeah. A little. They had a rectogeno and a cookie. I mean, seriously, they're not Clingons. Yeah, they're not Cling. Exactly. They're like, they'll never know. Let's just have a little.
Starting point is 00:46:51 They won't. The Claim gods are not going to come down and slap you. Go inside the cave, though. It is blood trial now. And Bashir volunteers, but he doesn't really volunteer. They ask for a volunteer and everybody steps back, which I thought was funny. And how great was Worf says, who will be first? I did not expect it to be you, doctor.
Starting point is 00:47:11 Bashir's looking around like, no, neither did I. Don't worry. The pain will only last for a moment. And then they don't show it, which I wish they would have because it's one of those things. Yes. that was actually my missing scene. I wanted to see the actual more stuff, right?
Starting point is 00:47:31 Yeah. Suddenly it all kind of disappears. Isn't it correct to say that next time we do see Bashir, that's when they're hanging, right? I think so, yeah. So we don't see. They're doing pull-offs.
Starting point is 00:47:41 They're doing pull-offs over fire. Okay. And handcuffed to the bar. Yeah. Well, next we have the Bachelorette party, as I like to call it. Oh, my. How much fun did that look like?
Starting point is 00:47:53 That looked like fun. super if I had been directing that scene I'm sure I would have been pulling my hair out because everybody was literally having too much fun and my favorite thing is nogs dance and that was me really thing yeah a friend of mine used to do a thing called Shirley Cat Shirley Cat David Livingston said I want you and Aaron to make up a dance right and my brain went blank for a second how are we going to do that and of course Aaron's like, oh, yay, we get to make something up. Right.
Starting point is 00:48:27 But what do we do? And I said, oh, you know what? A friend of mine used to do this Shirley Cat thing. You explain Shirley Cat, please? It was just a silly thing. Yeah. She called it Shirley Cat. She called it Shirley Cat.
Starting point is 00:48:40 I don't know where it came from. I don't remember why that started for their family, but we'd do this. I don't know why. It was just a silly thing. It's the greatest Star Trek dance I've ever seen. Thank you. So Aaron was like down with that. And I think with him, he did more of a wiggle thing or we pulled on her ears or something. Anyway, we both incorporated our ideas together to make the dance we were doing. It was so funny. And that was David Livingston telling us to do that. So it was him. Okay, the dance performed by Aaron Eisenberg was completely improvised on set. David Livingston simply told Eisenberg to dance as goofy as you want.
Starting point is 00:49:25 Farrell joining in was also completely improvised. We need to correct that trivia. I came up with Shirley Cat for sure. You heard it here first. Don't you hate it when you don't get credit for something that was your idea? The funny part about doing the hands. Yes. And that was from my friend Rebecca's sister's daughter.
Starting point is 00:49:46 That's what made it so funny was the hands in the freezing. Next time Terry Farrell is at a convention. She will lead you out on the dance floor. in a Shirley Cat celebration dance. Yes. Yes. And I will join right in because it looks amazing. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:50:03 Good. We can do it in Philly. Yes, let's do it. Oh, God. All three be there. Can I read a little trivia on this party scene? Please do. Yes.
Starting point is 00:50:11 Of the party scene in general, David Livingston comments, quote, the party scene I think everybody was afraid of because it was so daunting and I went into it saying this is a great challenge. Traditionally, party sequences on Star Trek end up not being very interesting.
Starting point is 00:50:27 It's just people ending up standing around talking. But the writers infused it in the writing with a certain amount of energy by having a fire dancer. I said to myself, quote, I've got to bring that same kind of visual energy and excitement that they put on the page. Otherwise, it's going to be like a lot of the other Star Trek parties that aren't compelling and don't have any energy to them. My template was The Party, the feature film The Party, starring Peter Sellers. filmed from the 60s, which just had this frenetic kind of energy with people moving around all the time and having somebody that walks bringing you to another scene that takes place there.
Starting point is 00:51:05 So it's all continuous. You're not just cutting from one part of the room to the other. Something brings you to the other scene that's occurring. So there you go. And he was fantastic. He was so relaxed. and David Livingston has a way of being super grounded and really open to what's possible. And I think he did a really great job in that scene.
Starting point is 00:51:32 And it looks like chaos, but it was organized chaos. I enjoyed it. I really thought the energy was great, the fire eater guy, even though we've never met him before, Mr. Lieutenant. And he could act, too. He did fire eating. Nice guy. Seemed like a really great guy.
Starting point is 00:51:50 It was super fun. Morin is there. Morin's having a party dancing with the bullion. Yes, he does. But to show... This is the fire dance. Oh, yeah, they were fighting. We'll get to that.
Starting point is 00:52:03 But to show, you know, someone of Hawaiian or Pacific Islander origin on track was pretty amazing. You haven't seen that before. A little bit more trivia. To ensure the right level of energy for the party scenes, director David Livingston literally staged an actual. party, including live music. He did this because it meant the actors had to shout on set to be heard, which added an air of realism to the scene. As he explains, with that drumming in the
Starting point is 00:52:28 background, they had to be more active. They had to deal with it. If I had them stop playing, the people would have toned down their performances. So he really kind of juzed it up by doing that. Yeah, he did a good job, really good job. I mean, we literally had fun that day doing it, too. It was a really fun day to work. Right. It looked like it. The one thing about the scene that I thought was kind of moving and heartbreaking in a way is we realize that Quark is not having fun. Jake notices that this and talks to him about it, obviously he's got a crush on Dax.
Starting point is 00:53:06 And it was a little heartbreaking to me when he didn't want to answer Jake's question. Jake's like, do you have a crush on her? It is interesting Quark's description, that one line. He says, it's a shame she's about to waste them all on that walking frown she calls a fiance. Walking frown had me on the floor laughing so hard. Yeah, that was very funny. So great. Quark can't talk about his feelings.
Starting point is 00:53:34 He can talk about profit, but not feelings. Jake says, are you jealous? And Quark says there's no profit and jealousy. Yeah. Yeah. And Jake says that's not a denial. It's, and Cork says it's not to be quoted either. Yes, exactly.
Starting point is 00:53:52 Yeah, yeah. But it makes sense. I mean, think of all the time that Cork played Tango with Dax. Like those guys spent many, many a late night just hanging out. So it's natural when you hang out that much with somebody else, you can start developing feelings for them. So I get it. Yeah. And we were pals.
Starting point is 00:54:10 Your buddies. Yeah. We go into the Hall of Sweet Cave and Bish. is my favorite part of this whole thing. Are hanging on a pole. Now we're to the pole scene, Garrett. You take it over. Yes.
Starting point is 00:54:21 Honestly, to me, this looked like a medieval dungeon. You know how they're hanging it off the walls like that? Yeah, but they had, did you see the big black cuffs they had on them? The manacles. They were cuffed. Yes. They were cuffed to that bar. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:38 They're holding on and there's a cuff. Yeah. Very funny scene. A fun time. No, but right off the best. that, you know, Bashir's like, Bashir's like Miles. O'Brien's like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:49 He's like, I have a vision about the future. I can see it so clearly. O'Brien's like, what is it? He's like, I'm going to kill Wharf. That's what he's just, and it's just the amount of vision. Yeah, the vision. But the thing is, how, how quiet Bashir was in saying that and how light it was. It wasn't like, I'm going to kill Wharf.
Starting point is 00:55:07 It was like, I'm going to kill Wharf. Yeah, I'm resolved. Oh, God, it's good because of that and that alone. And then O'Brien repeats after, Kill Wharf. Kill Wharf. They're so into that. It was very funny. On filming the Calhia scenes, J.G. Hertzler commented, quote, that was another hoot.
Starting point is 00:55:28 There was like a 5,000 degree fire going on. It was a hot day outside. We were standing next to this fire pretending not to feel it because we're Klingons. Those other guys complained. Those whims. Call him and Sid. hanging from their little fingers over the fire, wimpy boys. And that's what he said.
Starting point is 00:55:49 He said what? J.G. Wimpy boys. Wimpy boys. He goes, those other guys complain those wimps, Colum and Sid, hanging from their little fingers over the fire, wimpy boys. Without wearing all the makeup and the pair and the Klingons have like twice as much
Starting point is 00:56:06 clothes on. Yes. Exactly. That was a hot week. It was in the hundreds. I remember now because we did a portrait of myself and Michael Dorn in our leather outfits. Yeah. And stage four, they had the, you know, the garage door thing open.
Starting point is 00:56:26 Yeah. And we had, they set up a photo shoot area. And it was so, it was in the hundreds and we're wearing this. But I'm like thinking, yeah, I'm old enough. Well, I'm never getting married. so I'm enjoying this, right? We were doing publicity and entertainment. What was it?
Starting point is 00:56:50 E entertainment brought me a toaster, which was hilarious. Really? Yes. Oh, my gosh. Yes. Oh, my goodness. And Michael Doran was just so freaking angry because he was so freaking hot. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:57:10 He was pissed. And you know what? I didn't blame him. It was so freaking hot. And I didn't have plastic on my face. Yeah. Sweating with that stuff stuck to your face? Wouldn't that be awful?
Starting point is 00:57:25 I mean, it's bad enough. I had crape wool and a wig and he has a wig. And so it's like we're dressed for winter. Yeah. And the clothes we were wearing. But the photos look phenomenal. Right. But it was a hot week.
Starting point is 00:57:39 All the publicity photos of you guys in the wedding. costume wardrobe doesn't look like you're hot at all. You guys look fine. It looks, it looks beautiful. Bob Blackman probably felt pretty bad that he made it out of leather and it was 100 degrees. I think he didn't care. It looked amazing. No, but for some reason it's like my face doesn't sweat. It's the weirdest thing. It's like, you know, when you don't get sick forever, you're holding it together. And then as soon as we go for Christmas break, everybody gets sick. Right. Yeah. But it's almost like somehow you're, immune, I mean, not always, but it feels like as an actor, there's something extra special that goes in and goes, bootstraps are up.
Starting point is 00:58:21 We're getting through this. Hell or high water. We're getting through this. Oh, yeah. Oh, gosh. It's a different thing. Yeah. We are back in Dax's quarters, back at the party.
Starting point is 00:58:33 Lita is dancing on a tabletop, like a go-go dancer. Kira and Nog are doing the Shirley Cat that you came out. with. Okay, the cutest thing, though, when Lita is dancing on the table, Rom is pulling at her to try to get her off and she's hitting him away. She's having a good time. Go away. Go away, Baddry. So cute. They just got married. Yeah, they're married too, right? They're newlyweds. Yeah. But it's like the details that David Livingston made sure was happening as you were in the trivia. Yeah. Yeah. is you can see all of those activities were David telling us what to do. He did an excellent job. Well, it's so good that if you're watching, you want to be at that party.
Starting point is 00:59:23 You're like, this sounds, this looks like a great party. I want to be there. Odo arrives, tries to shut it down. There's been complaints about all the noise and the Shirley dancing, probably. He and Kira sort of have an awkward conversation. admit, look, you know, there's some things we should talk about, right? Yeah. We're kind of overdue for this.
Starting point is 00:59:46 And they decide to go have a conversation. And we'll see how that winds up. But in the meantime, Sorella comes in, crashes this party. She insults Dax, demands that she leave immediately for the brain-on-clin-ritchal. Brannon? Is it Brannon braga? Did they re-name this after Brandon Braga? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:00:14 Very funny. It's time for the Brandon ritual. Well, Sorrella wants you to leave. Dax says no flipping way. I'm not leaving. Cerella pulls a knife out. Pulls a freaking knife. What she pulls a knife after Dax says,
Starting point is 01:00:29 Torok Do, which is a Klingon curse. Like it's F you basically in Klingon. So then she pulls the dagger. Yeah, there's a little bit trivia here. Pulls out the dagger. And then when you ants, when Sorella ants after you hit her, she then screams, Mokta vore Kashkave, which means you are an enemy of my house. So you are no longer even going to be in my house.
Starting point is 01:00:54 You're an enemy of my house. Wow. Yeah. This is not good. No. There's a little fight. A little fight happens here. Probably a little tipsy too.
Starting point is 01:01:04 I probably am. You were at that place. My character. Yeah. Yes. Oh, you're at least tipsy. or beyond tipsy Sorrella is the one that knocks
Starting point is 01:01:12 Knaug back Doesn't Nog try to break this up a little bit I think yeah Ladies please yeah And then oh it says Dax pushes Nog aside I thought Sorella pushed him aside I think I push him aside To throw the puncher
Starting point is 01:01:26 Yeah maybe No that's after the Oh it is it is I see it right here Yeah yeah yeah Oh no I don't know It says It's a messy fight Drega draws her dagger
Starting point is 01:01:38 but Dax disarms her and hits her. Lady, please, Dax pushes knock aside and Sorella says, Mokta, yeah. Yes. I probably didn't want him to get hurt. Maybe that's what it was. You're protecting him. Of course, yeah.
Starting point is 01:01:54 You have a little fight. Sorella leaves really pissed off. And then Dax goes back to Shirley Cat dancing. Yeah, I cover. You cover. You can tell that I'm upset. You know, why is everybody standing around? I'm pushing it down.
Starting point is 01:02:10 This is my favorite part, Ter, for you. Because you are trying to get everyone to party again. And when you're saying, why is everyone standing around, you're still pissed off. I can hear it in your voice just the way you. So I thought it was really, a really good acting point. Thank you. Well, we cut to the next morning. Dax has a horrible hangover.
Starting point is 01:02:31 The place is trashed, warful eyes. I like they let me be messy. Disheveled. It's like so rare in Star Trek. to be disheveled. It's like, what? Yeah, even though makeup and wardrobe didn't kind of go along with the disheveledness, you played hungover very well. So I'm going to say that. You're good at that. Thank you. Yeah. Altoa and Morin are there on the couch and they go to leave out the wrong door at first. And then when they head out together, there's war. Yes. Before you do that, can we go back for a
Starting point is 01:03:03 second? Because the whole reason why the whole interaction happened with Sorrella is because because she sees Dax sitting on the couch with Atoua. Okay? And those lines, those lines, listen to this. I mean, Towa says, Dax says, thanks for the show. Toa says, well, thanks for getting me the day off. And Dach says, well, you know, how about another two days off? And Toa says, too, well, what do I have to do? Dax says, not much.
Starting point is 01:03:29 Just give me something fun to look at for the rest of the evening. And you're very flirty with how you're... Yes, you are. And then Atahua says, anything else? And Dax says, I'll let you know. And that's when Sorrella goes, take your hands off of whatever. Yeah, you're right. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:45 So how did you two take that? I want to get your take on this. What did you think? How did I take it? She was having a wild bachelorette party. Okay. Yeah, I don't think I was doing anything wrong. I was just being flirty.
Starting point is 01:03:59 I wasn't going to do anything. It was an empty flirting thing. Yeah. And he's a friend. Okay. Because what are the writers... He's a friend of mine. What are the writers here?
Starting point is 01:04:08 talked about that they kind of wrote it so that they were hoping people to, they felt like that Dax had had relations with him. No, in the past. In the past. Oh, yeah. This is someone that you had hooked up with in the past is what they're saying. Oh, yeah. She was wild.
Starting point is 01:04:27 Okay. All right. That's all I wanted to get out. Oh, I'm sure that's how they're friends. All right. So after Wharf comes in, he sees that she's got this hangover, but he's got bad news. Sorilla is Cerella is canceling the wedding.
Starting point is 01:04:42 Bad news. She said you attacked her. She pulled a knife. They head back to the bedroom, back to Dax's bedroom. I don't know if we've ever seen your quarters before quite this much, like for a party in the bedroom
Starting point is 01:04:56 and the closet. This is a real tour. No, we haven't seen this much. No. Yeah. So she tries to go back to bed. Your bed does not look comfortable, by the way. None of them do.
Starting point is 01:05:06 No. Look. like a very prison mattress with a blanket that didn't even cover your body. Yeah, like an extra twin size, only shaped like a coffin. It's shaped like a freaking coffin. Yeah, that's the Kardashian's shape of a bed. I have a sleeping bag like that and you want to turn around in that. It is hell.
Starting point is 01:05:26 She tries to go back to bed. Then she hears some voices. She goes over, opens the closet door. I thought it was the bathroom. But Kira and Odo are sitting there. I thought they were sitting on. Like a toilet and a bidet or something. No, I thought it was stools, but you saw it as a bathroom.
Starting point is 01:05:43 I saw it as a closet. I saw it as a closet too. But then now that we know the time, basically they have been in that closet for 12 and a half hours talking. That's a long conversation. No, 12 hours. 10.30 to 10.30. I thought it was 10 o'clock at the party, then 1030 were there left. No, he walked in and he said it was 10.30.
Starting point is 01:06:04 So it's 12 on the nose. But still that's a. Long combo. Yes. They needed it, though. Yeah, they did. And it was so great because it was like they'd gotten past their egos, their pride, the stress of having a conversation. And obviously they came through the other side.
Starting point is 01:06:24 It was a good conversation because here at the end goes, thanks for a great party. She's in a great mood. She's like, I have to go to work. Yeah. But even when the door opens, you can tell that they're not. Their demeanor. Yeah, their demeanor is relaxed. They're laughing.
Starting point is 01:06:40 They're sort of, you know, they're back to their normal self again. Yeah. Well, they leave. And then Worf tells Dax, she should beg forgiveness. And Dax says, I will not beg. And he mentions that this is a spiritual journey that we're on together. And she goes, I just want to marry. I don't want a spiritual journey.
Starting point is 01:06:59 I just want to get married. And remember, she's hung over when she's saying this, too. She does say, Cisco can just marry us. Let's just go in his office tomorrow. and, you know, later and we'll just have him do it. And he calls it off. She goes, fine. Fine with me.
Starting point is 01:07:14 Yep. But she's very sad at the end. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was, ouch. We're in corks. And he's taken down the banner.
Starting point is 01:07:24 Yeah. The banner falls. It was very dramatic. It was. And loud. Yeah. Yes. Miles and Bashir are there.
Starting point is 01:07:34 They're exhausted. They're starving. They're miserable. They see the banner fall. And then Quirk explains, yeah, well, the wedding's off. And they say, well, you know what? There's only one thing to do. Yeah, right?
Starting point is 01:07:48 And he goes dinner. Dinner. Yep, I'll get the menu. After the wedding is canceled, Worf has convinced himself that he and Dax are just two different. They're just not meant to work out. And Martok counters him and says, you know, and Marduk's got a very surprising speech here where he talks about Sorella being difficult and stubborn and often makes him, you know, furious.
Starting point is 01:08:13 But he loves her anyway. And he tells Worf that love isn't about finding the perfect person. It's about finding someone that you can share the victories. You can share your home and you can share your life with. And I feel like that was, to me, the kind of moral of the story there when he says, you know, victories hollow without someone to share it with. with honor has little comfort to a man alone in his home and in his heart. So yeah, it was good call. Martok's speech was great.
Starting point is 01:08:46 It really was. Then we go back to corks. Yeah, we're in corks. We do. Dinner is served. There's food. There's bread. It looks good.
Starting point is 01:08:55 Lamb chops. Oh, my gosh. Oh, Brian even says, oh, I wish I ordered what you ordered. Bishiro's steak and I was potato in it. I was like, oh, yeah. all the food quark puts it all out there and before they can take a single bite um uh Cisco interrupts and says nope don't eat anything the wedding's back on the fast continues but then cork says like even though even though you're not eating you're still going to get
Starting point is 01:09:22 charged for this food anyway yes then there's a weird time cut this was a little weird to me because we're in the same exact place but wharf comes into quarks and says that he talked to dax but uh the wedding canceled because she's not changing her mind. And Cisco heads off to talk some sense into Dax. Boy, does he ever. He's my MART talk. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:47 Cut inside where Dax is furious. I am hot. Yeah. You are. Yeah. Yes. But Cisco, of all people, would know how to talk to Dax for sure. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:59 And that's what happens. Yeah. I like how the scene is structured where I don't give in easily. Correct. The Cisco really has to have a conversation with me and remind me that even though I carry Curzon's memories, I am not Curzon. I don't have that high standing with the Klingons as Curzon did. Because you don't give in immediately. He starts off here and then he has to escalate and get bigger in order to pull you back into having the wedding again, which is great.
Starting point is 01:10:34 Yeah, exactly, which made it a really good scene. Yeah. He says, you're not Curzon, and if you're going to marry a Klingon, then that means accepting Klingon traditions, whether you like it or not. He talks about following your heart. And this sort of softens Dax a bit. You know, she goes over and sits by and puts her head on his shoulder, I think, at one point. Yeah, I do. And says, you know, I never planned on this.
Starting point is 01:11:02 I love the dialogue they gave you here. where you say, Dax says, I wasn't looking for love. I was happy all by myself. I had friends. I had a career, adventure. And then one day, this cling on with a bad attitude
Starting point is 01:11:16 walks into my life. And the next thing I know I'm getting married. Yeah, it was very sweet and very well performed. I thought you're playing of the scene. And you and it, Avery, did a great job. Very sweet. And very well written. Wasn't it?
Starting point is 01:11:31 This episode was really, well, Ron. Ron's amazing. And Dax's last line when she says, I guess it's time for me to grow up too. Yeah. Yeah, because I mentioned that what happened to the young Hadlonen that had all that hair. And Cisco says,
Starting point is 01:11:49 I grew up. And I say, I guess it's time I grew up too. Yeah, that's a good ending. But by then, I'm like misty-eyed. I'm...
Starting point is 01:11:57 Yeah, you are. Yeah. All that anger has turned into having to look at my sense. And say, nope, we're not going in that direction. Yeah. Don't you lay your head on his shoulder at this point? Yes.
Starting point is 01:12:11 I did notice that though there were times when I was talking that the way Avery was looking up and kind of there was not rolling his eyes, but I think he might have been staying true to he's been fasting. He's been doing the Klingon thing. So you can tell he's exhausted. He can't really. I just took the last amount of energy he had. Got it.
Starting point is 01:12:37 Off of that very sweet moment, we go to Quarks, where now all the decorations are back up, drums are booming. This is a shot from up on the second level, which I thought was a great angle to sort of establish this wedding. Yeah. And Sorrella walks up onto a stage
Starting point is 01:12:55 lit by these fires, and it's a very dramatic cling on ceremony, recounting these, the legendary tale of two, hearts that the gods made, first the one heart. Bravo Ron. Beating alone. Yes.
Starting point is 01:13:09 Talk about once the two hearts combined, they were so powerful that they literally destroyed the gods that created them. That's how powerful a Klingon heart is. And we see Alexander bring the batloths like the ring bearer. He's a batheath bearer. Yes. So sweet. The sword bearer.
Starting point is 01:13:30 So sweet. And he's so proud. I thought he was going to drop the batlet or something because he's so clumsy. I was like he's going to do something like that, but he didn't. Well, we see them kind of engage the batelets a bit symbolically with each other. We see Sorella bless this union in the end. She admits even she can't stand in the way of the power of these two hearts beating his one. That's great.
Starting point is 01:13:53 Very sweet words. You guys look beautiful. Your outfit, that red outfit. Oh, my gosh, the red leather. So many people have replicated that for their weddings. Here's the crazy thing, though. They didn't think about my shoes. Yes, I was going to ask you about that.
Starting point is 01:14:11 And, right? They gave me men's boots that were too big for me. Why they didn't just let me wear my normal shoes? I do not know. But it really yanked my chain because I couldn't walk elegantly because these boots were slipping off my feet. And it looks like I'm lumbering down the aisle and it just really ticked me off because it didn't feel like the regalness. I couldn't walk in the character. Yeah, you could have been wearing anything at that point.
Starting point is 01:14:44 I could have been freaking barefoot. Two more pieces of trivia that we learned from this episode is that Jedzia's father's name is Keila. We did not know that beforehand. We also did not know how old the Dax symbiont is. We know that there's several, several people, right? But it's 356. Fifty-six. How come, you know what I think is weird?
Starting point is 01:15:06 Where was my family? I have a mother and a sister and a father and nobody came in. Hello? But wouldn't it have been good to mention, you know, my parents were going to come, but they can't because of the war. Something. It was just really sad, I think, that Judziah had no family there. And not only you, Worf's human parents were not there.
Starting point is 01:15:30 No one else, nobody was there. The immediate family from both sides were not there. But then the war would make sense. The war. Good point. And his adoptive parents, they were on earth. But still, that would have been a good little tidbit to talk about. If, like, Kira said something to someone else or were to Captain Cisco.
Starting point is 01:15:53 Isn't that a shame, Dax's parents? That's a great point. Because, yeah, because I didn't think of it, but as soon as you bring it up now, feels like such an obvious miss. Yeah. Right. Talking about the other people that should be at a wedding. My mother.
Starting point is 01:16:07 Yeah. But we do have a little comedic interchange at the very end where Bashir keeps asking now. Mark talks like, not yet. Now. And when he finally gives them the okay, that's when they rush towards them with the batons, with the ritual beating of the couple. And we hear the beating over the credits. You hear a couple.
Starting point is 01:16:27 Yeah, I love that. I didn't catch that. Oh. God. That's great. Yeah. Blackout for the blood curling screams and thumping sound. And thumping. Yes, you can hear it over the credits. It's good. And it's a very nice button with Sorella saying, welcome to the house of Martock, my daughter, which was like, oh, finally. You're married.
Starting point is 01:16:52 All right. Theme lesson, moral of the episode. Terfair. Don't let your pride slash ego get in the way of your love for someone else. Good one. Great. I like that. Robbie. I'm going to quote Martak, victory is hollow without someone to share it with.
Starting point is 01:17:07 Great. Beautiful. I'm going to second that one. Terfer has the Patreon poll winner for theme slash lesson slash moral this episode, and that is Submitted by Kit Marie. Love requires compromise, not conquest. There you go. That's sort of the ego involved too as well, right?
Starting point is 01:17:25 Similar. Exactly. Yeah. Okay. Ego adjacent. All right. Honorable mention for themes slash lesson slash moral as submitted by Jay Furness is love transcends all differences eventually.
Starting point is 01:17:39 Eventually. Thank you, everyone, for tuning in. Thank you to Terfair for co-hosting with us yet again. Thank you, Terfair. Thank you, Gawa. And thank you, Robert. Oh, thank you. Bobbert.
