Starting point is 00:00:37 Would we be living together, you and I, if we didn't have a square space, in this little shed we have? I like to say, I hope so, but I doubt it. I doubt it, too. Squarespace put us together, and that's why we're living in a shed in my mom's backyard. The shed, by the way, it's a square space. I love it, Gareth. It's why we're living together. here's what we're saying.

Starting point is 00:01:20 you're missing fantastic stuff like... Someone said, please don't need it on the podcast anymore. It's funny. Because I did notice you were eating last week when we recorded, and you've said you didn't want me to eat before, because you were eating cheese, and now you're just eating apples. It's an ASMR podcast.
Starting point is 00:01:37 Is it ASMR or AMR or AMSR? Well, it's ASMR, but I would think that if you're turning the podcast into it, you would have done a little more research potentially. Somebody out of one of the things said, it's so annoying when boomers find the camera controls. And I just want to do this. So so far, it seems like, like you've just wanted to upset people.
Starting point is 00:02:00 Is that your goal? Pretty much. I was enjoying an apple and then you texted me and I was annoyed by that. Well, you're 10 minutes late for the time that was established. Like what you hear, go to patreon.com slash the dollop and sign up today. My father's dead. You killed you. They think that I'm shiny. I am a pie man.
Starting point is 00:02:20 I'm Pete Rose and I only go to Gold's Gym, this one specifically. Rumors that his penis is broke. And show up where the taco bar was. His brain just fucking exploded. River of cheese. You've been drinking any gnome juice? No, officer. My dad had a fart chair.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Hey, cover me. Luke, get out. What the fuck are you doing? Go. Jesus Christ. That was the most luke moment. The idea that you defended him. That was the most luke moment ever.
Starting point is 00:02:53 Trust me, trust me, trust me. The whole time. That was the most luke moment ever. He's supposed to clear out. He goes, wait, Everyone wants to see Poppy. All right, by Preston. Nobody wants to see Poppy.
Starting point is 00:03:01 No, and he also, he, on the drive here, he's like, so I brought Poppy, James, my buddy James' dog. He's like, should I bring it up? It's hot. And I was like, well, you've... You can't leave a dog in the... You've really left no option now. It's like, it's boiling outside.
Starting point is 00:03:15 You're going to kill your dog? Should I kill the dog or no? So I got a dog. You want me to kill it or you want to... There's just one question. Should I kill a dog while I'm setting up the studio? Okay. I am so welcome.
Starting point is 00:03:27 welcome there are videos Luke will be posting them in the chat we're going to do which makes me very nervous too I'll probably do a couple of breaks one will be did you guys bring your gristle
Starting point is 00:03:41 because we're going to eat gristle in honor of James Adomian we'll do a gristle break okay also 9-11 happy 9-11 is that what you I thought I deserved more traction on I can't believe it's been 25 years
Starting point is 00:03:56 since Charlie Kirk died. I thought that deserved more. Well, people don't, like, people don't really think about the fact that 25 years ago, a plane full of Muslims was flown into Charlie Kirk. No one talks about it anymore. And it was, yesterday my son was like, my mom asked him what, my mom, his mom asked him what? What's going on at 9-11? Tomorrow and he goes, he goes, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:23 My big day's 9-10. Now he's an Anthony. She got so mad. He's an Anthony. Yeah, so there's going to be a few videos. This is three parts. We'll take breaks. Does I get an attitude?
Starting point is 00:04:38 That's bad attitude. And I got to be honest with you. Let's start out, though. I've decayed. And so now I have reading glasses. congratulating what the 49ers did to the Rams yesterday. Because I think that's pretty important to do it in front of another country. You're listening to the Dalup on the all three.
Starting point is 00:04:56 Things Comedy Network. This is a tri-weekly American History podcast where for the next three weeks, I, Gareth Reynolds, read a story from American history to very nuclear
Starting point is 00:05:12 Chernobyl to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Dave Anthony, who doesn't know what the story's going to be about. You don't. You think you do. I kind of do, because I think I guessed it, didn't I?
Starting point is 00:05:25 No. I didn't get it. I pretended you did just so you'd shut up. Does Luke need this stuff down here? There's a... Don't worry about Luke. He's got the thing he can break into the building with, and he's got the... Yeah, he's got his whole thing.
Starting point is 00:05:38 He's got the case for the computer. He's fine? He's a grown-up go. Here we go. You ready, Dave? Yeah, let's do this shit. Let's pork. October 10th, 1969. 1969? Brett Lorenzo Farve.
Starting point is 00:05:54 You've got to be fucking kidding. I was going to do this one to you. Well, I told you I was going to do this one. Was popped out of Benita from the seed of his father, Irvin or Irv in Kiln, Mississippi. Or the kill to the locals. Is that true? Yes. What a terrible thing to call your town.
Starting point is 00:06:16 It's not as cool, man. It's not great. The kill? The kill. It's not good. You know, it's funny. That didn't even hit me as weird. I was like, there you go.
Starting point is 00:06:26 Let's be like calling your town like the murder, the death hole. Sure. It's just not great. That's what I call Brentwood. Or Baker's Field. By the way, there's no baker and bake. No. There's cookers.
Starting point is 00:06:39 There's a lot of cookers. There ain't a baker and baker's field. There's a lot of cooking going on. Kieln was on the map in prohibition for its potent and quality moonshine. Fuck you. Now I like them. See? Full of green pine trees.
Starting point is 00:06:56 small homes. This is where Brett Farv got his humble start in poor Mississippi. Where is it in Mississippi? Is it in the middle? Is it up top? Is it down low? It's kind of, it's sort of a bleeder. Oh. So it runs through a lot of it. Really? All right. I like a bleeder. The Farve home was built by Farve's grandfather and had just one bathroom on the sprawling bayou. And I do mean by you. The Farve got used to the gators eating their dogs regularly. R.I.P. Don't get a dog. RIP to fluffy whiskey and bullet
Starting point is 00:07:29 who all lost their brave fights against these water dinosaurs. No, no, no, no. Look, number one, indoor dog. Number two, don't get a dog. That's like people who get cats in the land or like run around outside. Fence. How about a fence?
Starting point is 00:07:43 Okay, but I'm pretty sure because coyotes can jump a 10-foot fence. I think gators can do the same. They're kind of the same animal. Imagine seeing a gator. Oh, we're fucked. If Gators started jumping, we'd be like, well, that's the end of that. But Gators can swim fast.
Starting point is 00:07:58 That's actually our only hope against A.I. is jumping gators. Yes. Gators can swim fast and they can fucking run fast. They can fuck fast, too. And they have fucked the shit out of it. Fav had two brothers. Scott and Jeff and one sister, Brandy.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Growing up, Brett gravitated to sports because, well, that's kind of all there was to do. And dad, Irv, embraced the boy's love of sport. No matter how competitive it got. Jeff, Brett's eldest brother, recalled how Brett had the strongest drive to win quote brett hated losing more than anything if he was on the losing end of the game we knew we'd be playing until he won sometimes that meant playing well past dark that's actually a common trait for professional athletes yeah it very much so they are are really i also say fin's batting coach is from louisiana probably around the same age and he he he went back to louisiana
Starting point is 00:08:51 once and we asked him about it and he goes I don't like going back because everybody's dead and the family was like what he goes all my friends are dead because they got to a certain age and then there was nothing for them they started doing drugs and started but that's like that's like the generation of this well and we've made that we've tried to make that america's business model which i like it's working it's going very well yeah there's not a i've never lived in an age more where i've been like is that person asleep behind the wheel while driving there's a lot of nodding There's a lot of nodding. But it's because we love Trump.
Starting point is 00:09:24 I love Trump. Who passes out. Let's all start doing. Yeah. I love that he called him sleepy, sleepy Joe, and now he's sleeping. And he's like shitting, sleeping Trump. Yeah, he's sheeping, yeah. Brett always gravitated towards football.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Brett said, quote, I'd watch Archie Manning scramble around making something out of nothing that resonated with me. I wasn't the type to just give up on a play. because the protection broke down. Luckily for all the boys, Irv was the high school football coach at Hancock North High School where Brett attended.
Starting point is 00:09:58 He was also the groundskeeper and washed the uniforms. His wife Benita recalls, quote, he had the prettiest field in the state. Boy, did he baby that field. That's actually another very common thing for coaches who, older coaches who were just fucking into it.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Down to the grass. They just lived for coaching kids. They'd always, their fields are always awesome. Athletes do a lot of the like, like to touch it. Yeah, it's a whole thing. Get down on it, lick it,
Starting point is 00:10:29 put your fucking cock on in the rub around. Excuse me, Irv. Sometimes you go, sometimes that's where you shit. Irv had two holes, a fucker and a shitter. Irvin would have those. I'm air-rating the grass.
Starting point is 00:10:43 The boys are all great athletes, but Brett was clearly the most driven. Quote, Brett is as determined as any person you'll ever meet. his mind is something you'd better get out of his way, his mother recalled. That's not going to, now I know things already that he's... Stop. Farb was a decorated pitcher with Err and earned five varsity letters.
Starting point is 00:11:02 When it came to football, he was quite versatile. He wasn't just the QB. He was also the safety, alignment, and a punter, and he would sometimes kick the field goals. Even though his son was the hawk starting QB, Erv favored a run-style offense, giving Brett less to do than he wanted. Irv said, quote, I didn't give Brett any special treatment. and if anything, I was harder on him than the other kids. I knew what he was capable of,
Starting point is 00:11:23 and I wasn't going to let him coast on natural talent. Yeah, fuck you, talent, kid. Dad was a term not allowed on the field. Brett had to call Irvin coach. All right, so dad's a fucking dick. Yeah, well, you know, it's like the, sort of like you're saying, there's this old school. Old school obsession where it's like this, oh, I mean, as you'll see,
Starting point is 00:11:46 there is a vacuum of love where, competition sort of took hold. Yeah. And that sort of, you know, seeded this. As a freshman, Brett was 5-9, 160 pounds, but by his junior year, he'd shot up to 6-2 and weighed in at just under 200 pounds. As the sun became bigger,
Starting point is 00:12:04 Irv let him throw the ball a little more, but Farr was a bit of a loose cannon. Brett wouldn't just let a play die like Archie. He was all or nothing, end-zone or interception. But he was nothing if not exciting. And in a town where you could either get drunk on bathtub gin or watch alligators eat your dogs, the Hawks game began to draw a crowd.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Is he running also? Are they having him run? No. I mean, he's running because he's like a scramble, but there's a running. They're not doing plays where he runs. He mainly is, I think he ran a lot of like wishbone. So it was a lot, like, it was mainly running.
Starting point is 00:12:34 And Farve is like dying to throw the football, but he's just, he's mainly letting him just hand it off. Businesses would close early on game days. Sure. And trucks with teams flags would drive all over the town. It was an event. He could make throws that nobody else could. He was thrilling to watch.
Starting point is 00:12:51 But the problem was nobody outside of Kielm was watching. Farve was scouted by one guy from Southern Miss University, and luckily the one night that that guy came to see, Brett, the starting running back got hurt, so the game was on Brett's arm. He played lights out. They offered him a scholarship. That never would happen today.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Why? Because they will want to see you over multiple games. Yeah, this is, I mean, the truth is that his story is such, a needle thread. Oh, the whole way. Right there. There's just like,
Starting point is 00:13:21 there can only be kind of one of these in a way. Yeah. Because he was never throwing. He had a fucking cannon. Yeah. There's a story about how he threw the ball
Starting point is 00:13:34 and the receiver didn't just hurt it and put his hands out and caught it. Like, so he was just like something fierce. But this is also a great example of, I can't tell you now that Finn's gone through this system. how many really great athletes we lose because high school coaches are fucking idiots. So head coach of South Mississippi,
Starting point is 00:13:57 Jeff Bauer said, quote, we liked his athleticism and his competitiveness, but truthfully, we didn't see him as our quarterback of the future. We saw an athlete we could mold into something else, end quote. But Brett Farrv didn't want to play anything but QB, so he started his freshman year as the seventh string quarterback, which does make me laugh. Seventh string.
Starting point is 00:14:16 I don't even really, I didn't. and dig into it. What teams have in seven quarterbacks? I don't know. Is he the last string? Is there an eighth guy? I don't know. I didn't check.
Starting point is 00:14:26 I didn't check, but I would. So when they offer. I'm 44th string. So when they saw him play one game, they're like, yeah, you just be one of our. Well, they didn't want him. They were like, you should play lineback or a tight end. He was like, no. And they're like, we had six QVs.
Starting point is 00:14:38 He's like, I'll wait. They're like, okay. Since Brett wasn't playing, he was partying. He quickly gained a reputation as a good old boy who loved to get wild. that I mean party. He would roll into practice hungover all the time. Yeah. What Brett had that other QBs didn't was arm strength.
Starting point is 00:14:54 Assistant coach Kenny Grantham said, quote, when I first saw Brett throw the ball, I knew he had something special. He had this natural whip in his arm. He could flick his wrist and send the ball sailing 50 yards with pinpoint accuracy. That's like me. Okay. September 19, 1987, Farve got his chance. Which is hilarious.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Why did he get a chance? Because I guess the other six died. It was the third game of the year and Brett was brought off the bench to play the second half against Tulane. As he warmed up for the second half, he began vomiting a lot because he was so hung over. Despite that,
Starting point is 00:15:27 Jesus Christ. Despite that, he led the Golden Eagles back from two touchdowns down to win the game. The starting spot was now his. He won six of his 10 starts that year. Quote, he'd make throws that would leave you speechless, both the good and the bad kind. But the thing about Brett was the great plays
Starting point is 00:15:42 always outnumbered the mistake when the game was on the line, end quote. Farve. Quote, My dad taught me that nothing is worth having if it comes easy. He'd always say,
Starting point is 00:15:52 if you don't want, if you don't leave everything on the field, don't bother showing up. There's tons of shit that's worth, vomit, too. There's tons of shit
Starting point is 00:15:58 that's worth having that comes easy. What's you fucking? What is stupid philosophy? I guess a blizzard from Dairy Queen. What about sex? Sex comes easy?
Starting point is 00:16:06 Some for some, yeah, some people sometimes it comes easy. That's a stammer. They're the man who has, he's got a big team. Sometimes sex comes easy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:15 sometimes I come easy during sex That's not all we're talking about Sometimes I don't even make it to the inside It's sometimes I don't even make it to the girl's place Sometimes I'm just making undie ropes You know what I mean? Have you heard of Jiz diapers? You're gonna love these things
Starting point is 00:16:35 When you just start wearing glasses? I told you I fucking threw these I'm fucking wearing reading glasses now It deteriorated That's so great It's horrible Reading all these It's a weird thing for a teenager
Starting point is 00:16:45 To have to wear old man glasses I'm trying to look older. But it was like, because I was reading so many fucking things, I was going to, God damn it. And then my buddy was like, get readers. And I put them on it. I was like, oh my God. Yeah, it makes a difference.
Starting point is 00:16:58 Incredible. But now regular reading, I'm like, that's a tough one. Going into a senior year, optimism was high for Brett. But on July 14th, 1990, it almost all went away. He was under a mile from his parents' house when he lost control of his car, flipped three times and landed up against the tree. Three times. One of his brothers raced over and smashed the car window with a golf club to pull him out.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Thank God they were golfers, too, or we would have lost Brett Farr. Yeah, there's the old Jack Nicholson. But yeah, it was bad. That's why he's got the number four. Not a lot of people know that. It was bad. His liver was lacerated and the internal bleeding required emergency surgery, quote, they told my parents I might not make it through the night, end quote.
Starting point is 00:17:38 Can I just say something? Sure. This is like nothing comes easy. So this is kind of what you want to go through. This is part of what you want if nothing comes easy. Well, how about this? The surgeons ended up taking out 30 inches of Brett's intestines. That must be 30 feet, honestly.
Starting point is 00:17:53 No, 30 inches. The intestines are like five miles. I know. Well, not five miles. That's the craziest thing you've ever said on this podcast. They're like two miles. It's not. It's right down there.
Starting point is 00:18:04 This isn't good. Do you want to let... Back with a dog. Do you want to let Poppy knock something over? That is so scary. This is fucking amazing. How long are your intestines? Yours.
Starting point is 00:18:17 In general. Like miles, right? Like a mile. That doesn't matter. Get out. Oh, everybody's? Yeah. I thought you were my specifically.
Starting point is 00:18:28 No. So, yeah, it must have been 30. It had to be 30 feet. I mean... It was a lot. I mean, it was super fucked up. Oh, my God. You guys are out of your...
Starting point is 00:18:38 The human intestines measure about 25 feet in total length of unfully stretched out. Yeah, so they took out 30 feet. He didn't have nothing, that's. That was, you and Luke agreeing on a fact. Do you bet? Like you're on the table and those are your surgeons? I actually think it's not, there's not that much.
Starting point is 00:18:55 I think it's eight miles. That was amazing. It's where Eminem lived. Anyway, they took out 30-somethings of Brett's intestines. It was going to take months for him to recover. His only question before and after the surgery was, will I be able to play football again? Yes, of course it was.
Starting point is 00:19:10 And the answer was probably, it's out of the question. Just because he lost some intestines? He was really fucked up. I know, but big fucking deal. So you lose some intestine. I can still, I can still, like, not shit well and play football. Even I can. All right.
Starting point is 00:19:25 Well, the good news is they didn't know. I thought this was going to be interesting, but since you're such an iron man. However, they didn't know Brett Farf. He was back practicing within five weeks. He did look different, though, after losing 30 pounds. But a lot of that was probably a lot of that was just testing weight. I mean, he lost two miles of intestine. So that's going to weigh a lot.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Lost a hundred and five pounds. 30 feet. He's just eating and like ribs are coming out of his ass. Everything he eats like a cartoon. In the second game, so that's five weeks later, in the second game of the 1990 season against Alabama, the starting quarterback was not playing. Oh, fuck me.
Starting point is 00:20:07 What? Looks back. But in the second game of the 1990 season against Alabama, the starting quarterback was not playing well. So Farve was the only choice and he came, off the bench and he did what he does. This is five weeks after? Five weeks after.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Shocking. That's pretty crazy. It's crazy. Yeah. They came from behind him one. It was shocking to basically everyone, even Alabama's coach, Gene Stalings, who said, quote, you could call it a miracle or a legend or whatever you want to. I just know on that day, Brett Farve was larger than life.
Starting point is 00:20:37 And they took 30 pounds a lung out? No, test it. Oh, I thought you said 30 pounds a lung. No, no. You only have a foot a lung. Far finished at Southern Miss career Starting all four years For 29 victories
Starting point is 00:20:49 And passing for over 8,000 yards This is good Now it was time Were they a good team back then Or were they just an average Were they an average? But they're but they're yeah Like now like they're an average team
Starting point is 00:21:01 Yeah there's so many colleges As you know Where it's like There's kind of like Take it or leave at programs And take it or leave at players But he stood out So he was like putting them on the map
Starting point is 00:21:11 Okay People knew them because they were I mean, he clearly was good. And so when it's time for the draft, a lot of people thought he would go in the first round. But he fell to the second round where the Atlanta Falcons selected him with a 33rd pick. Now, while his talent was undeniable,
Starting point is 00:21:28 scouts were worried about brets off the field shenanigans. He was known for partying very hard at Southern Mississippi, and that turned a lot of teams off. Well, you couldn't even have that now. If they see a red cup in a friend of yours Instagram, they will cut you. That's fucking so stupid. Yeah, it's pretty dumb.
Starting point is 00:21:45 Just drink out of a fucking boot like a man. So the scouts all know that he's like a lunatic partier. Yeah. Now you're wondering, how did they know this? Why, Farv told them in his team interviews. Are you fucking shitting me right now? Oh, this from Far, quote, I wasn't going to lie about who I was.
Starting point is 00:22:04 I enjoyed having a good time at college. I also showed up every game day ready to compete. I thought the teams would respect the authenticity, end quote. And they didn't. So he, so I think. think right now we can really deduce that he's he's an idiot he's fucking dumb he's a good old boy he has not been exposed he's not been exposed to uh he definitely is not refined in any way he was not prepared he's not refined well we're going to find out more about that later but he's also uh
Starting point is 00:22:33 he doesn't have common sense that's just common sense i don't care if you're a good old boy anybody to talk like wouldn't one person be like don't do like erv yeah well irv was probably you got to let him know. Also, tell me about my field. Tell him how many shots I can do a night. Are you guys drafted fields? I actually, I have the number one overall pick grass. Tell him
Starting point is 00:22:55 you should never throw. You should just hand off the ball. So, okay, so he gets drafted by the Falcons. The Atlanta Falcons were coached by total lunatic Jerry Glanville, who quite frankly did not want Brett Favre. Glanville told reporters how he felt immediately after
Starting point is 00:23:10 Fav was drafted. Quote, he's got a strong arm, no doubt about it. But there's more to play a quarterback in this league than just throwing the ball through a brick wall. We'll see if he can develop the other parts of his game, end quote. Hold on. He's like, quote, Glanville gets gunslinger he didn't want ran through Atlanta papers. I'm sorry. If you have a guy that can throw a football through a brick wall, that's your guy.
Starting point is 00:23:33 Yeah, you use that guy. You use that guy. Also, shut the fuck off. Like, why are you doing that? Can you fucking imagine watching any draft cover? and having any person from the organization come out and be like, I mean, I guess. I don't feel great about it, though.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Like for your second, be crazy. This is the fucking head coach. Oh, fuck. That's really great. But Glanville, to be fair, said and did a lot of wild stuff. He wore all black all the time. He wrote a Harley to work,
Starting point is 00:24:03 and he loved rock and roll so much that he always left a ticket for Elvis and James Dean at every game he coached. Now I hate him. He wrote a book about time. Now I hate him. You're a fucking idiot. Give it to give it to him. a kid who fucking needs it, you douche nozzle.
Starting point is 00:24:15 He wrote a book about his time with the Oilers called Elvis Don't Like Football. Come on. I'm a ticket for Elvis every game. Who gives a fuck, you dork? Like, what do you do? And Bigfoot. That'd be great. I have a ticket
Starting point is 00:24:31 under my name. There's a ticket for Rumpel-Stillskin. Hello. Just got a bunch of like gold with it. Hello. Ticket for Snow White. Check it. Try skin rumple. Or he won't tell him his name.
Starting point is 00:24:50 Like, I have a ticket under my name. Okay, sir, what's your name? No. No, no, no, no. Well, sir, what's your name so we can get the ticket? R.F. I just, please. Is that, please?
Starting point is 00:25:05 Is it a free ticket? It's just a ticket. Elvis. Okay, so when Farrb showed up to training camp, Glanville called, never called him by his name. He either called him country or Mississippi. Oh, my God. By the backer George Coots recalls their first combo we overheard.
Starting point is 00:25:21 Glanville. Hey, Mississippi. Farv. Hey, coach. How you doing? Glanville. Call me Jerry. Farv.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Okay. Hey, Jerry. Glanville. What school are you from, Mississippi? Farv. Southern Miss. Glanville. Oh, damn.
Starting point is 00:25:34 We drafted the wrong guy. We wanted the guy from Mississippi State. Coots recalls the look on Farv. Quote, his face was devastation. so yeah so this is also a common thing when a coach hates a player they don't call them by their name we had at our football at the high school they had two kids come in very good players the coach just didn't like them so we'd only call them by their numbers oh wow and they quit they both quit
Starting point is 00:26:01 they're like fuck you well he was absolutely the worst fucking coach for farf i mean all right so glanville rattled farf when glanville was asked what it would take to start Brett in the game, he said, quote, a plane crash. I like him. I don't like him. I like him. I don't like him. You know what he is? He would have been great for this era. Oh, perfect. I mean, just sound bite. Yeah. You just see Stephen A. Smith like, how are you going to talk about it like that? You don't talk about your starting quarterback like that. Speaking of plane crashes, what's going on with Stephen A. Smith? Can that happen?
Starting point is 00:26:40 I don't think you're allowed to ask about it. I'm not. crashes today. Well, he ruined. Yeah. That network had, that network had life by the balls. They had the entire sports world. Everybody would watch the sports and then go there to see what they'd talk about because all the guys were interesting and funny.
Starting point is 00:27:00 And then they went fucking. All the overtweaking and the little change. It was around Disney Bottom. Yeah. When Disney bought him, it was like, that's game over. And now it's just all Pat McAfee. It's just unbelievable. And Glanville looked right in practice.
Starting point is 00:27:20 Fars nerves got the better of him. Quote, throwing a football sometimes I never had to think about it, but man, there were some ugly ones, aren't there? Glanville's Atlanta team was also pretty undisciplined off the field. They liked to drink and talk a lot of shit. But Guard Bill Fralic was the worst of the worst, and he was hell-bent on letting rookies have it. He was so bad that other veteran players would warn.
Starting point is 00:27:42 rookies about him. But they're also not good. They're not terrible, though. They're not great. But they make it to the playoffs this. Oh, they do. Yeah, not because of Farr, but they, and even the Oilers were good. The Oilers, it's not in here, but the oil, he got fired from the Oilers because the GM
Starting point is 00:28:00 was like 70. Yeah. And he basically said that his job, Jerry Ganville said his job in the draft room was to keep the GM awake. And so the GM was like, get the fuck out of here. Okay, so Bill Fragick, right? Like other players would warn rookies about him. So here's some examples.
Starting point is 00:28:19 In 1990, he and his posse Frawlick would take young players out of the showers, straight out of the showers, and then tape them to a bench and carry them out to the practice field. Nude, taped in front of players, fans, kids, everyone saw them. Well, I think that's okay. Like, I think... Right. You've always been a bit of a supporter of this sort of... No, I think... I think that when you're a rookie, everyone should get to see your genitals.
Starting point is 00:28:45 Yeah. And I'm on the, let me tell you a little story. Okay, so bringing naked, grown athletic men from the kids. Yeah, great. It's not great. Oh, it's not. When I was at a brewer's game, when I was probably six, the guys in front of me got so drunk. I was with people.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I wasn't by myself. The guys in front of me got so drunk. And one of the guys at one point just pulled his pants down. Sure. And his buddy started to pull his pants up. Sometimes people need to see. it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:10 Or it just needs to air out. I completely agree. Like before, we used to not have clothes. Like when we were, humans were made, where we made with jeans? You should be in a Brewers game naked. This is what I'm talking about. So fellow rookie Pete Lucas had a target on his back. Quote, I was threatened to have my knees taken out of practice if I didn't do what I was
Starting point is 00:29:31 told, he said. Cool. And, quote, and that was basically to take my clothes off, sing, dance, perform naked any time, any place. It happened to me all the time. On airplanes, on buses. You expect some hazing from time to time. But when the coach stops a meeting so you guys can force you to strip and do something, it's a different level. In offensive line meetings, the coach would call for a break and I'd have to take my clothes off, end quote. Or there was another night when Lucas and another player were ordered to do a naked strip tease in front of the whole offensive line and hug while they sang Ebony and Ivory because they were a black and white pair.
Starting point is 00:30:08 This is this is the 90s, right? 90s. Jesus Christ. It's fucking insane. It's insane. North Dallas 40 for people don't know was a movie about the, essentially about the cowboys, and they're just partying like crazy. And that was in the late 70s, I think that came out.
Starting point is 00:30:33 This is the same just years later. And I don't even know like, I mean, look. Hazing was so bad for sure. Oh, terrible. It's crazy. But this, there's so much of this shit. Well, it's not just hazing. This is like, this is a sexual assault.
Starting point is 00:30:50 Yeah, so these, these are a bunch of pro football players who've had to repress their sexuality. And a couple of them clearly want to see dicks all the time. Yes. Well, Brett Favre was lucky. He was able to get into their good graces quickly because, well, he was already kind of fucked up like them. He gambled, he drank, he talked a lot of shit. And you already like being naked and stupid. For a show, when he was in the shower,
Starting point is 00:31:12 Farve would bend over naked and pretend to talk with his ass. Who hasn't? Quote, it sounds gross, but it was hilarious, punter Scott Fuelidge said. Well, so a lot of people don't know this, but that is the originally how the Muppet show started and was. It's called the upside-down gonzo. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:29 Now, see, okay, talking your butt cheeks with your pants on, funny. Doing it with old pants on? Horrible. Funnier. Oh. Sorry. I thought we were going in a direction. Absolutely hilarious.
Starting point is 00:31:41 So talking with your jeans on, with your butt cheeks is funny. Talking with no clothes on with your butthole sex crime. Yeah. This whole thing is just like, was there a coach? Who goes into the locker room who's like, because some of these guys are like early 30s? And I'm like, ah, the kids talking with his ass again. The guy's had to be like, hey, should we go through some. of the plays?
Starting point is 00:32:09 Hold on, man. Farb's showing us his dinner. How many guys now are super religious? Like they have prayer circles. Yeah. So like, one guy like, I'd be so funny to lead a team prayer and you just turn around and Farve's got his cheeks spread like,
Starting point is 00:32:24 Dear Father, you are in heaven. And Farb began to find his rhythm in practice a little bit too. His zip was unique. He was hurting receivers' hands in no time. Jerry Glanville remained unimpressed. Farv said, quote, I'd make a throw and I thought it was pretty good, and Coach Glanville would just shake his head.
Starting point is 00:32:40 It was clear early on that I wasn't the quarterback he was looking for. Jesus. Eventually, though, Glanville saw use for Fav. Gambling. He would take wagers on how high in the top-tiered seats Fav could throw the ball. Quote, Shut up. He would just say, quote, Mississippi.
Starting point is 00:32:54 Throw it as far as you can. End quote. He would say that after getting someone to bet against him. And you know, Brett. If he wasn't starting, the partying wasn't stopping. Quote, I wasn't ready for Atlanta. The city, the lifestyle, the expectations. it was overwhelming.
Starting point is 00:33:09 I was a country kid suddenly dropped into the fast-paced environment, and I didn't handle it well, end quote. The freedom of knowing that Glanville wouldn't play him allowed Farve to go out and party a lot. Yeah, well, it was the same thing as when he first, when he was the seventh guy in the order, and he was hung over. He was hung over because he didn't think he'd ever play.
Starting point is 00:33:28 Well, and he also, he had, he's one of those guys who, again, he's not playing, but he's very good. And so it doesn't matter. He's like, I don't need to practice. But he starts going crazy. So he was like when he'd go out, he was house and pineapples and vodka, which is such a fucking comical drink to me. Pineapple vodka is like...
Starting point is 00:33:49 How do you get there as a guy from Mississippi? I don't know. It's such a bizarre... You know what? Someone probably just told them about it. He's like, I'll try that. He probably never had anything besides beer and moonshine. He was house of pineapple vodkas.
Starting point is 00:34:01 His diet was mainly meat, donuts, and pizza, far of quote, I just said the hell with it. I went out every night, gained weight, and I was out of shape. I didn't study. I didn't care. I'd just show up in time for the meetings. And I'd go out there
Starting point is 00:34:12 the second the meetings were over. If he made the meetings, some days he would sleep in and miss the early meetings. Yeah, well, why? Some days he'd be in the meetings and he'd be passed out. Glanville said, quote,
Starting point is 00:34:23 I went into a meeting and he was there sound of sleep. And I went over to raise all kinds of hell. And as I got closer to him, I could tell why he was asleep. He absolutely could not run a 40-yard dash. It was a joke. I mean, that's insane.
Starting point is 00:34:37 same. Imagine imagine watching a guy not be able to run a 40-yard dash in the NFL. Quarter of even 30. A long slap. A fucking lineman can do that. Honestly. You have to. It's that like, so Glanville felt specifically disrespected.
Starting point is 00:34:53 Quote, so I went downtown to Atlanta to a place called Frankies to a bunch of other spots. I went to all of them and I asked them to not give far free drinks. Oh my God. That he needed to be at home. Well, in Atlanta, they don't care who you are, what you want. bar would agree to help me. Of course they wouldn't. So funny.
Starting point is 00:35:12 You know how much money? You know the quarterback, Brett Farr? No more drinks for that one. Don't give him drinks. Fuck you. Okay. But also like, this is so insane. Insane.
Starting point is 00:35:23 But this reminds me of like 1900s baseball at this point. Yeah, it is. That's what it sounds like. Yeah. But like, you can't do that because if there is a celebrity athlete, in your bar it's not it's not it's just the fact
Starting point is 00:35:41 if he's there drinking everyone's gonna come to drink so it's well there was um what the fuck it was uh there's this Netflix show called quarterback where they follow quarterbacks it's pretty boring but I watch it and Joe Flacco is if
Starting point is 00:35:53 you know like glue was a person and he would go to the pizza place and people started showing up just to eat pizza around him and he's like I found my spot it was like it was one of this it reminded me
Starting point is 00:36:06 much of being a road comic where you're just like, I found my place for two days. I went to his town once and I went to the Big Bear, what is it? What is it? Big Bear Cafe, is that what it is? Yeah. I thought it was local. And I was like, this is awesome. Yeah.

That's where we hide them all. On October 27th, injuries got Brett's number called, and he entered with a minute 54 left in the fourth quarter. The Falcons were up 31.14. They had some differences,
Starting point is 00:44:11 but Glanville gave Farve some positive direction before he got under center, quote, "'Don't do anything stupid, Mississippi,' end quote. Farv handed the ball off three times for the win. There you go. Farv saw more playing time on November 10, 1991. The Falcons were getting their asses kicked by the Washington racist team names
Starting point is 00:44:28 so Glanville put him in. Farf had four pass attempts. He completed none of them, but he did throw two interceptions and fumble at once. And that was the end of Brett Favreth starting time with the Atlanta Falcons.
Starting point is 00:44:40 The GM Herach said, quote, I'd come back Friday and it'd be you should see what your boy did this week. Oh, he was drunk at a meeting. Oh, that's son of a bitch is 20 pounds overweight. They showed me one tape and they go, watch this.
Starting point is 00:44:54 You've got to watch what he did in practice. Watch this ball. We've never seen a ball curve like this before. This guy can't play. It's so amazing to me when you see pro athletes come back from a break, you know, whatever, over the summer. Oh. And they're just gigantic. You're like, you have one job.
Starting point is 00:45:11 Travis Kelsey. Wouldn't you want to not be out of shape? Travis Kelsey came back. Like, I know your life said. I know you're, but still, bro. Yeah. Come on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:24 I mean, show up a little. Some of these guys put on so much weight. It's like you're trying to put on weight. I honestly think they might be. Yeah. I think there's, like, there's dudes who really lock in, but then they're like receivers and shit like that normally don't fuck around. But like the court running, Eddie Lacey who played for the Packers, I mean, it was, it was astounding. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:45:43 He would show up and we'd be like, did you retire and not tell anyone? What are you doing? So Herok, who drafted Farve, decided it was time to see if he could field any offers for the pending bus. The Packers are. and were one of the most historyed and storied franchises at this time in the NFL. But frankly, they sucked. Yeah, they did.
Starting point is 00:46:03 Coming off of 4 and 12th season, they fired everybody and hired a new GM named Ron Wolfe, who hired a new coach, Mike Holmgren, who was fresh off of running a West Coast offense in San Francisco during their dynasty years. San Francisco 49ers. That's correct.
Starting point is 00:46:19 The team that spawned essentially birthed your team. Go ahead. Yeah, cool. then we fucking jammed up your ass. Ron had thought Favre was a top QB prospect in the draft of 91, so before being officially named GM, he told the Packers president, quote, I'm going to go look at Atlanta's quarterback in warm-ups.
Starting point is 00:46:38 If his arm is still as strong as it is coming out of college, we're going to make a trade for him, end quote. And sure enough, Ron traded a first-round pick for Fav. Did they not look into his background of being like a pizza vodka machine? Brett would joke later, quote. thank goodness he didn't look at my waistline i mean right or just or just ask questions like how would you not like now if you do if you do a trade like like i said red cups for kids get kids uncommitted from college like they they actually have the assistant like coaches when they're in the off
Starting point is 00:47:14 season are literally just looking through their players social media to see if it to see if something's off or if they find something like the the scrutiny of all these people now And that's just a high school kid trying to go. But you know what else does, though? That it's not to say that, you know, it's like trying to vet someone for everything they've ever said or every picture they've ever taken. No, it's crazy. It not only is it crazy. It also then it forces people to sort of sanitize real life in a way where it isn't really reflective of who they are or what they think.
Starting point is 00:47:48 You would kind of rather be able to just sort of say like, look, you take this all with a grain of salt. You interview them. you vet them. You do like all the stuff they normally do and then come to a conclusion rather than just sort of because then these people get on the scene. You're like, what the fuck? Like think of Jackson Dart. All of a sudden Jackson Dart was like, I opened for Trump. And I was like, what the fuck is happening? Like you get to the winner's circle.
Starting point is 00:48:09 Then you're just like, woo. Well, cheer about the new Pittsburgh guy they drafted, the quarterback. No. He is Rathelsberger 2. Oh, God. And that is not good. Oh, God. He's not going to be able to get away with it. like Rothsburger did.
Starting point is 00:48:24 It's a different time. To be fair, Rothersberger was pretty known. It was just, you know. So if you don't know, Rothensberger would literally walk into a bar and go, who wants to blow Ben Rothensberger?
Starting point is 00:48:34 And then they would have people, like he had a couple of charges against him. Oh, rape. He's a rapist. Allegedly. Oh, yeah, totally. And, I mean, he had other shit too,
Starting point is 00:48:42 but he would have someone stand, like that night of that rape. He had someone standing in front of the door. A blocker. A blocker, a lineman. Yes. Which is cool. By the way, Louis C.K.
Starting point is 00:48:52 On February 11th, 1992, Brett Farr was officially traded to the Green Bay Packers. When word of the trade hit Jerry Glanville, he said, quote, I would have traded him for a six-pack of Budweiser. The Packers already had a starting quarterback, though, whose name was Don McCowski. I love McCowski. But to Packers fans, he was the Magic Man. Yes, they would play that heart song, Magic Man at Games. And just if you want to make sure.
Starting point is 00:49:19 There's no other, there's no other. there's no other franchise that is so or gasmically in love with any quarterback they have. You guys are idiots. You're just, you're just, you're just an embarrassing group of people. Talking about it. It's awesome.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Jesus Christ. It's awesome. It's like now, I feel like now I'm sitting next to Alex Burns. All right. But it wasn't fully unwarranted, Dave. Even though the Packers had sucked in 1989, Don, Magic Man, Mugoski, was runner-up to the MVP from Joe Montana.
Starting point is 00:50:00 He was number two. It's pretty interesting. What team did Montana play for? The Satan's. In week two, Favre saw his first play as a Packer when they were getting spanked by Tampa Bay. His first pass was deflected, and Fav caught it and was tackled for a seven-yard loss. You're not supposed to do that. No, but not a lot of people complete their first pass to themselves.
Starting point is 00:50:21 If it's going to be a seven-yard loss, then just drop it. I mean, you're in sticks. Maybe he thought it was a ham or something. Yeah, yeah. Shit. Ham! They were like, Brett, Jesus Christ. His real first action came on September 20th, 1992.
Starting point is 00:50:39 The Packers were playing at home versus the Cincinnati Bengals, down 2317 when the magic man ran out of tricks, and his ankle was crushed. Oh, shit. Coach Mike Holmgren turned to chubby Brett Farve and said, quote, helmet. By the near end of the game, they remained down with one drive left. Starting from their own eight-yard line, with just over one minute remaining, Fav huddled the offense up and went to
Starting point is 00:51:04 work. He completed ridiculous pass after ridiculous pass. With 13 seconds left in the game at the Bengals' 35-yard line, Fav beat the cover two and threw a rocket to Kittrick Taylor in stride for a touchdown. They won the game by a point. Everyone, especially Brett Fav, went fucking nuts. The story of Brett Fav, the player, had begun. This is the problem with this episode is you're going to go into... I do pretty good. You're going to go deep into all these little moments that really don't care. You could just say he came in and last minute he won the game,
Starting point is 00:51:32 but you're going to fucking just slather on the frosting. It's going to be a problem. I'm sorry. It's going to be a problem. You paint on frosting. You slather on barbecue sauce. If you notice the baseball episodes, I go quickly past this stuff, but you're going to get deep into the woods.
Starting point is 00:51:46 They finish nine and seven. You're jerking off pack of shit. Far completed 302 passes on 471 attempts and recorded 18 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. In that game? No, that's, yeah. It's 30 inches of intestine, and it was the fourth quarter. Here's the season.
Starting point is 00:52:05 Farts a minute is starting job, but he still wasn't taking it seriously. Dettmer's backup couldn't get over his lack of prep. What do you mean he wasn't taking it seriously? Dude, listen, okay? You're about to hear some stuff. Detmer couldn't get over his lack of prep or knowledge. This is a backup. And one meeting he recalled, quote, the O-line coach would be on the board.
Starting point is 00:52:23 say, quote, in the nickel, they like to blitz. Brett kind of leaned over to me and says, what does nickel mean? And Detmer explained, and Farv acted like he'd never heard it defined before. So the difference is one or more, like, where the defensive back is. It's so important for a quarterback to know what the fuck that is. It's crazy. And this was in like his second or third year. How does he not know that?
Starting point is 00:52:45 But he turns to the backup. And the backup's like, it's the defensive bet. It's the safety. And Farb was like, oh. Why didn't the fuck? There's no way he hadn't heard it. He'd heard it. If you watch...
Starting point is 00:52:58 He kept hearing it. If you watch it on TV, they would say... I don't know if they do it anymore, but they would say nickel this, that all the time. How do you not... How... But his coaches had you been saying it in Atlanta. He'd never... He'd never pieced it together.
Starting point is 00:53:12 And I think that's fine. It's not fine. I think it's okay. I think you're being a little negative. Jesus Christ. Look, and it's fun. He's so... Here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:53:21 I always thought he was fucking dumb. now I think he's worse than that. This is dumb. This guy lost 30 feet of intestine. He has the curiosity of a field mouse. It is a shocking. You know, it's shocking to not eventually ask. I would ask early, but you're right.
Starting point is 00:53:40 You're right. Look, Dave, the coaches were sick of it. They were pining for Favre to take the game seriously. His talent was undeniable, but his focus was never close to what any other quarterback had. His quarterback coach, Steve Marucci, she tried his best. Quote,
Starting point is 00:53:53 I had my spies out. I would know. Not always where he was or everything he was doing, but I knew a lot. I had people. Green Bay is a small town. I had people call me.
Starting point is 00:54:02 They called me and go, all right, coach, your guys behind the bar serving drinks tonight, end quote. And the truth is, I couldn't find a lot of, like,
Starting point is 00:54:12 necessarily specifics, but I knew when I was growing up, you heard about him, Frank Winters, and Mark Shumura out on the town, fucking drinking. fucking, they were mooning people outside of a limo.
Starting point is 00:54:25 Like, that was their move. You know the drinkers are. Like, the 49, the San Francisco Giants just had a player get in trouble. He was injured. He had injured his ankles. It was out for a while. And like a month ago, he got drunk and got on one of those little scooters you rent and then ran into a, I think, a bus or a fire truck.
Starting point is 00:54:48 That's fine. And rear hurt his ankle. But, like, when. So when a fire truck hits your scooter, that can affect your ankle? Yes. So when... I love when players have to come back after that and they lie. They're like, slipped on a towel and fell down a stair. We have footage of a fire truck hitting you on a razor.
Starting point is 00:55:06 Oh, yeah. But when that story came out, all these people are just like, oh, no, he booses all the time with us. No, he's dropped. He's always partying. He's dropped. Yeah, everybody has a story. That story is only made better if it was a parked fire.
Starting point is 00:55:17 Farr's main issue aside for partying was throwing interceptions. He always believed he could make the pass without getting picked. Brett was now being called, quote, a gunslinger because he, quote, made throws no one would even attempt. Sometimes in film study, Colch Holmgren would rewind a play three or four times, point at the screen and say, do not do this again. Then he'd pause and add, but damn, that was a great throw. He, Mike Holmgren, lost his fucking mind.
Starting point is 00:55:47 I mean, he was like a Bill Walsh guy. Yeah. And then he comes there and this guy's like, what's a dime? What's a nickel? Yeah. And he's like throwing picks and he would be like, yeah. If you don't know, Bill Walsh's systems is very like detailed. It's short, pretty passes.
Starting point is 00:56:01 But it's very detailed in how everyone's moving and you have to know everything. And it's short passes. And the Bill Walsh coaching tree is insane. It still is like. No, he basically created the NFL. Yeah, he basically created what half the league does. Yeah. Homegrid could not handle the amount of interceptions far.
Starting point is 00:56:17 would throw. Back up Mark Brunel recalls, quote, I'm not just talking about interceptions. I'm talking about bad interceptions, you know, falling down, throwing it up in the air, just trying to make something happen, just trying to use his arm strength, the power through it. This isn't Southern Miss. This isn't Division I football. This is the NFL. And that stuff doesn't work. He relied so much on his strong arm to make something happen, which at times helped him, but also was his worst enemy at others. Oh, boy. So in that season, the Packers toyed with the idea of starting Mark Brunel. But Farr have heard the wake-up call and went to was coach Mariucci. I just want to be the best quarterback in the league. That's all I want.
Starting point is 00:56:52 In the back of my mind, I'm saying to myself, Brett, you know we're talking about playing someone else. You want to be the best quarterback in the league. It's on the table. You're going to be on the bench unless you play better, end quote. And Farriff flipped the switch. He played lights out from then on. His pick still happened, but he gave the Packers enough confidence in him to trade Mark Brunel. And Brett... I wouldn't have thought he had that in him. Farve? Yeah, it's weird. It is kind of weird. But I think it's also that that, you know, he's a fight or flight guy. But there had to have been
Starting point is 00:57:21 something else besides that, because we're telling him I just like a crazy fucking party guy. Yes. So, so besides just my jobs on the line? There are some people, and I've I can be like this at times, who like partying so much
Starting point is 00:57:37 that they want to do it for the rest of their lives. And he's, that's his gravy train. The football is. So maybe he had some recognition of that. But he was still partying. I think he just locked in as a he studied more I think he just did more film he was never a fucking gym rat
Starting point is 00:57:53 I mean even in his older years he wouldn't show up to training camp or mini kid you know what I mean he would show like it's what I'm like the last like couple weeks so Mark Brunel quote my favorite Brett Favre's story is a hunting story from when he was a kid he and a buddy are a couple of buddies who were out trespassing on some property somewhere and they had a 22 rifle they were just messing around and they see a deer
Starting point is 00:58:12 you're trespassing you shouldn't be there to begin with and the last thing you should do is take your gun out and shoot a deer. So they do it. And I think they hit it a few times and knock it down. And after a couple of shots ring off, they realized somebody could discover them and find out their trespassing. They're frantic. They don't know what to do. And they've got this deer and it's flopping all over the woods. So they figured out the only way to kill this deer without shooting at it was to drown it. So they drag it over to a puddle, a stream or a small pond. I don't know what it was. But they basically held this deer underwater until the bubble stopped coming out of its nose. Listen, I'll
Starting point is 00:58:44 probably get in trouble for telling this story, but it's one of the funniest stories I I've ever heard. And the way he told the story, we were cry laughing. It was gutache type laughing. Hey, that's not funny. That's a fucking horrifying. Absolutely fucking awful. That's like an arrest. You should be that. There should not be a statute of limitations on that story. Like, you should go and fucking rest. He drowned a fucking dude. He shot drowned a deer. Can you imagine drowning a deer? Can you imagine drowning a deer? No, I can't imagine drowning anything. Two buddies, two buddies.
Starting point is 00:59:18 And then imagine telling it. Now I'm thinking of people I could drown. It's a weird turn. The list is getting bigger. Who's top two? Seinfeld. I want to drown Seinfeld. There's nothing wrong with wanting to.
Starting point is 00:59:36 What's the deal with oxygen? First of all, his whole fucking, I mean, he paid for the fucking all the right wingers to attack the student protest at UCLA. he fucking went to an IDF camp learning how to fucking kill. He loves idea. He was fucking banging a fucking 17 year old when he was 39. If I ever got around Jerry Seinfeld, I would just be like, was she a virgin when you got in there, 39 year old? Was she a virgin, big boy? Boy, there are a lot of scenarios I'd like to see, but I would love to take you to a club where Seinfeld.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Could you imagine me in Seinfeld square and off? It would be crazy. I would go so hard. It was crazy. It would be crazy. Go so fucking hard if I was ever near him. Oh, my God. You just, like, fucking punch him, and then it'd be like,
Starting point is 01:00:20 bouldo, boom, bo, bo, bo. Oh, so in 1995, Brett Favreve came to fucking play. He threw for 400, 4,413 yards in a league high 38 touchdowns while having an 11 and 5 record. He won the MVP with unanimous selection, but in the playoffs, they still lost. To who?
Starting point is 01:00:42 I think the Cowboys. Yeah. Still to fans, he could do no wrong. Packers announcer Jim Irwin said, quote, this town and this player were made for each other. Bread embodies everything these fans want and their quarterback, toughness, passion, and zero pretension. He could walk into any bar in Wisconsin and fit right in with the people love him for that authenticity.
Starting point is 01:01:03 So first thing... Okay, so how much do you love him at this point? Oh, fucking obsessed. I'm full... Honestly, a lot of... I was already out on Favre, you know, by a fucking intestine's length. But that's 700 miles by the way. That's the Oregon Trail.
Starting point is 01:01:23 But I was super in. And it was because of this. But also, you know, you go through it and you read these things. And it's like there was this real level of sports indoctrination into it where that this was what they were talking about the whole time. John Madden, I don't, I cut a lot of it, but John Madden is a big. John Madden really helped kind of one hand wash the other. He loved Fav on a level that was shocking and astounding. And he could do no wrong.
Starting point is 01:01:54 I think Farrve reminded him of those guys that he had on his championship teams. Farr was kind of a throwback in the sense that he was like he, that's kind of what I mean. It's like his style of play was straight out of the 70s. Yes. And it was just different. Like he was elusive. He would throw these things. He'd be like, what the fuck.
Starting point is 01:02:12 Yeah. But he would also make these incredible. incredible plays. And he was always hurt and he would still get up. And those those dudes were like, they love when you're hurt. They loved it. They love when you hurt in your play. It's the best thing ever. It's the best thing ever. I think he's the first one who got the gunslinger. I might be wrong, but I think he was the first one who got the gun slinger thing. And you still hear that. And it's so fucking annoying. First of all, because we're obsessed with guns. But second of all, you're just like, it's, he's a football player. They're like, this guy fucking loves the.
Starting point is 01:02:44 fucking Maverick. He's a pow, power power quarterback. Yeah, he's a fucking tear. But he was a fighter. Over the years, Fires' injuries piled up, putting a real toll on his body. Through it all, he showed grit
Starting point is 01:02:56 that Wisconsin love. Quote, there were some days when the training staff would practically have to rebuild him before kickoff, Dr. Patrick McKenzie would say, quote, he'd be an excruciating pain
Starting point is 01:03:06 during warmups, but once the game started, some switch would flip, and he'd play like nothing was wrong. I've never seen anything like it. Well, and the thing about that is, I know the coaches love it and all that and the old guys love it, but the team gets fired up when you persevere through whatever and do your job.
Starting point is 01:03:27 Yeah, it does send a message. I mean, there is some of that culture-wise. I mean, it was admirable and Vicodin. Halifax is a city I've always wanted to properly explore. I'm talking about walking the waterfront with a coffee in hand, finding whatever little seafood shack like Evans Fresh Seafoods over in Dartmouth, owned by a local fisherman family doling out, Cadian-style fish and chips.
Starting point is 01:03:50 The kind of place the locals actually go to. That's my kind of drip. Here's where it gets practical, though. The second I start planning a trip like that, I think about my own home, just sitting empty when I'm gone. I could be listing it on Airbnb. Someone gets a real place to stay in in a real part of the city, A charming walkable neighborhood where you could experience the city at a slower pace.
Starting point is 01:04:12 Guests can explore the trails and scenic views of our nearby park. Catch the glow of the city at sunset from the local observatory. Or spend an afternoon wandering historic avenues. Stopping into local shops, cafes, neighborhood favorites along the way. And I end up coming home with a little something extra to show for it. It's pretty hard to argue with. Honestly, once it clicks, it's hard to unclick. Whether it's a few days away or a couple of weeks,
Starting point is 01:04:36 listing your home on Airbnb can help earn you a little extra cash to fund more trips like this. Home might be worth more than you think. And he had been. Now we're into my area. And he had been since he got the starting job against the magic man.
Starting point is 01:06:18 So how many, are we two years in? We are. No, we're probably a little more than that now. So he's been popping Vicodan now for like three or four years? Pretty consistently. Here's what happened. He hurt his shoulder and he was offered a pain shot to finish the game when he was backing up, Don McCowski and he got the starting job.
Starting point is 01:06:36 Far of quote. I saw Don McCowski Raring to go And if he'd gotten back in there I may have never gotten my spot back At half time the doctor said it's your choice But we could shoot it up with Novakane Without further injury
Starting point is 01:06:47 I said let's do it In a little while I didn't feel any pain I played well and we won the game Is that legal? Damn, that was easy Is that legal? Can they do that now? Honestly I don't fucking know What's going on? There are shots There are crazy pain mad
Starting point is 01:07:03 Spray But I think they juice you up still Yeah, I think they can. Yeah, I wonder if they can do Novocaine. I do like the eel song Novocaine. Sorry, we're only talking about Magic Man. If that is any. Eels are a really good band, very underrated.
Starting point is 01:07:17 Nope. Sorry. It's the magic man. There we go. Okay. It was gradual, but by 95, Farve was taking up to 14 vikes a day. Holy shit. That's a lot of Vicodin.
Starting point is 01:07:30 Quote, I was taking pain pills like there were Skittles. Can you not shit when you take Vikingian? Is that a non? Not with miles of intestine, missing. I was taking pain pills like they were Skittles. The thing was nobody knew I was the MVP of the league, but I was as low as I could possibly be off the field. I do anything to get it.
Starting point is 01:07:48 Lie, beg, borrow, you name it, end quote. Did I say he won the MVP? This is so fucking, this is exactly what North Dallas 40s about. He won the MVP. Big fucking deal. He once took 13 Vicodians during an awards event, and when he ran out, he started asking teammates for more. Well, can I ask you a question? Sure.
Starting point is 01:08:08 How many Vicodin are you supposed to take during an award ceremony? Like, I mean, for pain or recreation? For just, yeah, for whatever. None for recreation. No? No. No. Because if I'm out of an award ceremony, it's like six. Can you imagine taking 13? No. But I'm sure it's, I'm sure your tolerance goes up with Vicodian. Yeah, but there's a lot of downside. But, but why not switch to Oxy?
Starting point is 01:08:30 Well, they don't think they had it. No, I guess it's not around it. Yeah. Tight-end Mark Shemura, who at one point was acquitted of having sex with a 17-year-old in a hot tub, not because the jury didn't believe he did it, but because they didn't have enough evidence to feel that they could convict him, said, quote, Brett would fall asleep at team meetings. He was completely different person than the guy we saw on Sundays. I'm sorry, I was distracted by the guy who Seinfelded. In a hot tub time machine. That's what he thought was going on.
Starting point is 01:08:57 That story, that story, okay, first of all, that story was fucking crazy. and it was huge news but okay I'm in college and I'm on a plane and I'm flying back from Boston and Milwaukee and I'm nobody remember when flying you had room and all that
Starting point is 01:09:14 so it's like me and I see Mark Shemura walking down the aisle rapist Mark Shemura? Rape a legend and he's walking down the aisle and he sits like across from me and there's no one else sitting in our rows so it's just me and him
Starting point is 01:09:28 do you wink? Uh huh? I wink. I get nice and drunk, and I'm watching him. He's house and wine, too. Uh-oh. This was Midwest Express, where they give you free wine. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:38 So we were house and wines. Uh-huh. So I just go over to him with my barf bag. Yeah. And I go, Mark, will you sign my barf bag? And he chuckles, and instead he signs his boarding pass. And I got off the plane, and I was like, whoa, that's a big deal. Did he give it to you?
Starting point is 01:09:52 Yeah. Because I would love for him to sign his boarding pass and keep it. There you go. If you're that big. of really it is time for puzzling decisions like you just do that and I stand there you like get out of here okay he just keeps my pen uh well that's a big moment for you that you got to yeah actually like being that close to a really uh I would say high end statutory rapist is pretty important thank you shit got bad on February 27th 1996
Starting point is 01:10:29 far over was recovering from an ankle surgery with a soon-to-be wife de and daughter Brittany at Belling Hospital in Green Bay. Suddenly he had a seizure. His head was swinging and he was grinding his teeth. They screamed and a nurse came in. His daughter cried and asked, quote, is he going to die? Yes.
Starting point is 01:10:43 No, let me finish. Well, that's what I would have said. Well, yeah, but that's not what you should. I should be a nurse. So this is how you do it? Oh my God, is he going to die? Yes. What?
Starting point is 01:10:52 Probably. Nurse. Get out of here. The jig was up. He entered the NFL substance abuse program and went to Meninger Rehab Clinic on May 14th in Kansas City. He spent 40, days in the program for Viken.
Starting point is 01:11:04 46. Yeah. Pretty good. And I remember when this happened, it was crazy. I believe that's a very rough one to get off of. He came out, oh yeah, he came out and was laser focused for the next year. Farve turned the picks down and the touchdowns up and won another MVP. He also led the Packers to a Super Bowl victory. When they won, my friend Kevin Lasker picked me up and dropped me and I cut my chin open and we didn't care or stop celebrating.
Starting point is 01:11:27 How bad was it bleeding? Pretty bad. Pretty like a fair amount of blood. Did you ever have to get that? stitches or anything? No, no stitches. But there's a little scar. Oh, there is a scar from it. Yeah, yeah. So do you think maybe you're an alcoholic? It was their first Super Bowl championship in 29 years. Brett Farve
Starting point is 01:11:42 was now officially a cemented legend. Farv, quote, the rehab saved my life, my career, my marriage, everything. Coming back from that and winning the Super Bowl the next season, sometimes I can't believe we did it. But here's the thing, Dave, Fav didn't stop drinking. He quit Fikes, but not alcohol. Well,
Starting point is 01:11:58 what's the addiction to? So the addictions to a pill So everything else is on the table. Come on. So in 1998, he secretly found himself back in rehab, a different one, quote strictly for drinking. Oh, fuck. That one didn't take, so he went back to the first rehab program
Starting point is 01:12:17 that got him off the Vicodon. And now sober, he was still fun. Back up quarterback. But that's three? That was three. He goes back to the first one he went to. For the Vicodan. For the Vicodan.
Starting point is 01:12:27 And the nurse who helped him quit the Vicodian. it in was like you need to quit drinking and he's like no I don't and like three or four years later he's back and she's still there and she's like what do you hear for he's like drinking and she's like I told you what I say and then she and then they got it on no no no no no no no he's gonna die
Starting point is 01:12:46 now sober he was still fun backup quarterback Doug Peterson quote he's a big hunter and he would take things like dough urine scent that attracts deer and maybe dip it on a sock or a stick and put it in the off-offensive lineman's shoe locker After a couple hours, it would begin to smell, and you couldn't find where the scent was coming from. The guys, oh man, they knew exactly where to go, and they knew exactly that it was going to be Brett. Backup quarterback Ty Detmer, quote, hygiene wasn't really his thing at the time either.
Starting point is 01:13:14 I remember we played at the old Cleveland Stadium, and the locker room was tiny. We were sharing lockers. He'd hang his underwear up on the hook, and there's this big yellow stain in them. Guys were like, what the heck? And he's just laughing like, what? What's the problem? He really didn't care. Okay.
Starting point is 01:13:31 What's going on? I mean, this guy's like... Yeah. Yeah. Larry the cable quarterback. I mean, it's really like fucking shocking. The... Now listen.
Starting point is 01:13:43 Gross stuff happens. You know, it's like we travel. It can be gross. Someone, like, having shit in their underwear of, like, hanging it up or, like, and he was a big, like, he was a big farter, burper, shitter with the door rope. Like, he was all those...
Starting point is 01:13:58 Shitting with the door open and should be, a legal crime. Well, you had to shit with the door open with him because if you didn't, he would dump ice water over it onto you. So he kind of made a condition where you had to shit with the door. So now I'm shitting
Starting point is 01:14:13 with the door closed with a shotgun. I'm going to kill him. Not against the gunslinger. You made a shootout. If I had been on the team, which I almost was, I would have killed Brett Farve. Jesus Christ. You'd be in a real
Starting point is 01:14:29 I was a cornerback. Time traveling Dave Anthony would be great. He's just going back and killing people. He's got a list. Jerry Seinfeld didn't understand it. Wait, Seinfeld was never made? No, Dave took him out in 88. The Packers went back to the Super Bowl the next year and they lost when they were viciously cheated by
Starting point is 01:14:49 they were vicious. Well, they went next Super Bowl. They lost the Broncos. And then the following year, they lost out and they were cheated by the Saints of San Francisco in the playoffs. And they make it to that super bowl. What is your alleged cheating accusation? Terrell Owens stabbed our defense.
Starting point is 01:15:04 And in 99, Mike Holmgren left the Packers. I'm in the middle of this. And in 99, Mike Holmgren left the Packers to have more control over the Seattle Seahawks. Thank God. When Mike Holmgren left the team, Farve began to falter. His 99th season, he had 3,827 passing yards for 22 touchdowns in a league 23 high interceptions. Farv, quote, I used to try throwing a touchdown, and on the next play make up for it with an interception.
Starting point is 01:15:30 It doesn't work that way. Still? No. Do you know why? Why? Because when you throw an interception, the other team gets the ball. So it's not really making up for it
Starting point is 01:15:41 by then getting a touchdown. But he's trying to make a touchdown. Because the other team could have scored. I used to try throwing a touchdown on the next play to make up for an interception. Well, first of all, you can't do it in the next play because the other team has the ball. Next offensive play.
Starting point is 01:15:56 Why I ought to? Yeah, I'm just saying. A little scoundrel. I'm just saying. Still, Favre was the league's biggest star. Fans and journalists, love is down to earth, real guy Brett Favv stuff. By the end of Farr's 10th year, he had thrown 287 touchdown passes to Steve Young's 181. That's a 160 D difference between number one and number two.
Starting point is 01:16:16 What is Steve Young getting at this time? Medical degree, but go ahead. So was Fav. What's talking about? Brett Farb is the only guy who can perform surgery on Ruff. Madass. So it's a surprise nobody went on March 1st, 2001. The Packers signed FARF to a 10-year extension worth around $100 million.
Starting point is 01:16:38 Completely insane. How old is he? He's probably, he's like probably early 30s. That's way too much. That's way too much. Way too much time. Way too much fucking time. He, as you know, and as anyone.
Starting point is 01:16:52 This is also, however, big steroid time. So they can. go longer using steroids. There is a lot, and you see this at some point in here, but it's like, it's also that he was, it's like Marshawn Lynch. Like, he was also a character. Yes. And so, like, the way that he was attached to Wisconsin and the Packers and all that, it's like,
Starting point is 01:17:21 money why, you know what I mean? It's like when you have a star player, what it does to your, what it does to Green Bay, I mean, a small fucking town like that. It is big... You can also probably make that contract money back on shirt sales and everything else in like five years. Totally. Media would do... Wait, are you knocking it or are you agreeing with me?
Starting point is 01:17:38 No, no. I think when you have a big star like that. Yeah, you do. I think you make the money back on... Media would do pieces on him about the relationship between him and his dad. Like the one in the L.A. Times that featured this exchange between Irv and his son at Irv's home. Hey, those are mine, Irv says.
Starting point is 01:17:53 What are yours? Farv says. Those underwear you got on, Irv says. How do you know, Farv says. says. Look at the dang front, Irv says. Scrawled and magic marker across the front of the underwear is the incriminating word. Dad. You did it again, Ervin says. You came home, did laundry, then packed the wrong clothes. Farve pauses. Damn, he says, I'm supposed to be some big-time football player and I've got on 15-year-old underwear?
Starting point is 01:18:18 Crazy. Hey, look, I don't want to be live anymore. That's just how I'm responding to that. You never put on your dad's underwear? want to be molecularly, I wish I could just dissolve. But just remember Farve had the stains in his, like he had the poop stain? That's all I'm thinking about
Starting point is 01:18:36 is there's no way. So the idea of putting on your dad's underwear with his poop stains and your poop stains? Yeah, that's what I'm thinking of because there's no way his dad doesn't also have fuck a poop stains. No, of course he got poop stains. No, but you learn that good, like, clumbinness and shit. Really makes you wonder what it was like in the showers when he spread his butt cheeks. Oh, God, damn. Three, two, one.
Starting point is 01:18:53 We're back. America did love the bond between Farve and his dad. No, they didn't. Yes, they did. No, they didn't. They did. You guys did. No, listen to this, dickhead. Irv was at most games, even though he would still focus on Farr's bad plays.
Starting point is 01:19:06 There was a real bond. So it was national news when Irv died on December 21st, 2003. A heart attack took his car off the road. It was a tragedy, but immediately the question in the sports world was, will Farrf play the next night in prime time. The Packers were set to play the Oakland Raiders on Monday night football, a game they needed to stay in the playoff conversation. Up until this point, Brett had not missed a start,
Starting point is 01:19:27 but this was 24 hours after his dad and his mentor died. It seemed crazy. Finally, Brett gave word, quote, my dad would have wanted me to plug. Yeah, we knew that was going to fucking happen. I knew there was no better tribute to him. You're trying to build this up as the like the mystique of love. He taught me.
Starting point is 01:19:42 This was huge. He could have run over his dad in the car and he still would play. John Madden was basically weep jizzing in his pants. Of course he was. Arrived that he would do it. This is idiot football guy. This is the kind of shit that you get sucked into, and it's fucking dumb.
Starting point is 01:20:01 Everyone did. Of course he's always going to fucking play. This was a huge story. Huge. Look, you'll hear in a second. It was huge. Okay. So you heard of...
Starting point is 01:20:10 John, he's been an iron man. Fractured thumb, bad knee, and all the rest. But how do you play through this? I have no idea how Brett Farr was going to do it. You know, yesterday when we talked to him, he had so much spirit and energy, and he felt so good. I mean, about, you know,
Starting point is 01:20:27 his team and about what they were doing and what they were going to do and then a couple hours later he hears that his father dies and there's no roadmap for this. There's nothing that you said this is a right way to handle it. This is a wrong way to handle this is how you do it. This is
Starting point is 01:20:43 something that has to shock you and how Brett Farrb is going to be able to handle this I have no idea. That was it. It was all that. It's not no. So it wasn't just Wisconsin. Do you know how many? Of course not. They're fucking going to blow it up. Of course they're going to Yeah, that's what I mean.
Starting point is 01:20:57 It was a story. But it's not like everyone's like, wow, prep five. Look, they always play after this. I don't know. They always fucking do. There's soccer guys. There's baseball guys. Now, a kid, no.
Starting point is 01:21:12 But their parents, they always fucking play. And they always say the same thing. My dad would have, my mom would have wanted me to. My dad would have wanted me to be out there. Yeah, we get it. I did a dollop. I did a dollop the day. My dad had a stroke.
Starting point is 01:21:26 I gave them. the stroke. Okay, dokey. That's fucked up. Brett played one of the craziest games of his career. Before the half, he had thrown for 311 yards and four touchdowns. He had a near perfect passer rating of 105.9, and they won 41 to 7. He completed 73% of his passes, quote,
Starting point is 01:21:44 it was as if he was possessed by something greater than all of us, said Packers coach, Mike Sherman. Farve said, quote, I knew my dad would have wanted me to play. I love him so much and I love this game. It's made a great deal to me to my dad, to my family. Didn't know what to expect that kind of performance, but I know he was watching tonight. Yeah, okay.
Starting point is 01:22:04 Farv won an S-B for the game. Yeah, whatever. You don't get fucking, I'm sorry. This literally, this happens every time I fucking parent dies, the guy who's always playing. He somehow just kept getting more and more sympathetic. Fuck off. And more and more likable.
Starting point is 01:22:18 Fuck you. People who didn't like the Packers like Fav. People who didn't like football like Fav. Farv had become larger than life. This is such Wisconsin Horaceable. And that's the end of part one. It's fucking bullshit. You ended it with a giant fucking bullshit stain.
Starting point is 01:22:32 No, I didn't. Yes, you did. It's fucking crazy. They love them. You're such a fucking homer. You're such a homer. I'm not. You'll hear more.
Starting point is 01:22:39 So bad. Sources. One of the sources is not Jeff Pearlman's book Gunslinger because Jeff Perlman has actively asked people to not read it. Is that true? Yes. Because because he wrote it and he, first of all, I love Jeff Perlman. I love his work.
Starting point is 01:22:58 I love what he does on fucking Instagram and his podcast and stuff. Is he now upset that he wrote good things about Favv and now learned later what Favv is? That sounds like Jeff Perlman. Mississippi today, s.i.com, ESPN.com, NBCSports.com, Reuters.com, legit.com. CBSports.com, L.A.T.T.com.

Starting point is 01:23:51 removed, you poop your pants. I mean, his basically what we learned is that he basically goes straight throat to ass yeah he's a straight throat by the way that's a 69
Starting point is 01:24:06 what if when you're 609 you thought you were trying to get to the asshole the whole time so you're like no you're doing it wrong I can taste it that's part one stand up you like that I didn't know you like that
