Starting point is 00:01:02 Hey, cover me. You're listening to the Dalup on the All Things Comedy Network. This is an American History podcast or each week. I, Dave Anthony, read a story from American history to my conservative friend, Gareth Reynolds. Who has no idea what the topic is going to be about but is opposed. That's right. I don't care for it. Why not?
Starting point is 00:01:30 you're a little too open to the ideas of helping the little guy or little girl or since I have to do it, the little whatever their gender is. If you read the Bible, it was never, I can't. I got to stop. I'm getting in the weeds here. Just completely insane. Dollarpodcast.com, if you want to go watch us on tour in Australia, there will be a reverse Live dollop on this tour.
Starting point is 00:02:04 We're calling it the whammy. May 23rd, 2024. So Karen Bass is where we left off was... Are her supporters called Bassholes? Yes. Where we left off was Karen Bass has decided to do an end around the city budget and just give the cops more money in negotiating their contracts. In a good way.
Starting point is 00:02:35 Way more. An insane amount of money. Well, master negotiators will tell you that's what you do. You find the unpopular thing and then you give it more than it's asking for. Correct. So due to this budget, it's the 24-25 budget, millions are cut from good union city jobs, rentals abort, homeless services, and after-school programs. With the fire department, an emergency management service.
Starting point is 00:03:06 services getting gutted by $23 million. And the LAPD was getting another $130 million. It's because of the contract she did outside of the budget. But there was also the breakthrough of how you could shoot out fire. You could shoot fire. So they were just on the cutting edge of this. And she sort of realized you didn't need to have the fire department as much. That's right.
Starting point is 00:03:30 Because the cops. By the way, I do think there would be a strategy of that if you just told the that fire was homeless people. That's right. That's not a bad idea. Those are homeless people. Get your bats, boys. So every DSA council member voted no.
Starting point is 00:03:51 With the genocide happening on Gaza, L.A. residents were demanding action, and Nithia Rahman put forth a motion for L.A. to call for a ceasefire. Around the same time, a bomb threat was called into City Hall. the bomber Hamas
Starting point is 00:04:09 claimed Hamas that it was over the city's support of Israel Oh But then the caller turned out to be Karen's deputy mayor Of public safety
Starting point is 00:04:20 How are you? Okay All right, you got me But we were having a bit of a goofy time And we were goofing pretty hard back there So I do I do apologize There was no bomb
Starting point is 00:04:35 he was a high-ranking member of her earner circle. But imagine if that was real. He was sentenced to a year of probation and got a $5,000. I'm fine. But it's also so fucking embarrassing. I know, right? I mean, how do you get put into a position of that, like, that level of power if you can't pull off a fucking prank call?
Starting point is 00:04:55 I mean, it's a little more than a prank call, but yeah. I think it's funny. I think it's pretty hard to call it a bomb threat now without being found with all the technology we have. I would think if you're the fucking, if you're in the mayor's office, he'd be like, here's how we do it. Still, Gareth, Karen is riding high. Polls show are at 59% approval.
Starting point is 00:05:16 I mean, I guess the budget hasn't really hit yet. Yeah. And the homeless campaign is working, so right now it's not that bad. But also, it's brunch time. Only 35% disapproval in December. And then Fire Chief Kristen Crowley sent the Board of Fire Commissioners a very blunt warning. the board of fire sounds pretty flammable. We should actually get rid of that and have
Starting point is 00:05:41 it be the board of not fire. Yeah, that would make way more sense. The board of fire? Yeah, it's not great. Walk it! You walk the board of fire! Just an absolute madman. I work with a madman.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Did you just lotion? No. No, babe. Hand sanitizer. We lotion later. We lotion later. motion at night.
Starting point is 00:06:14 So that is the time. The fire chief said the department was facing unprecedented operational challenges caused by the elimination of critical civilian positions and a seven million reduction in overtime variable staffing hours. She said the reductions would cripple the fire department's ability to maintain core operations and had severely limited its ability to prepare for training. for and respond to large-scale fire emergencies, including wildfires. Did I mention that Karen Bass cut all this money?
Starting point is 00:06:55 Yeah, I'm just trying to, and I hear that, I'm just trying to think, like, if you could get rid of the fire department overtime, that would be a huge way to say that. A 2023 letter had already... Even after hearing that, it is shocking that she's even running for mayor again. it's shocking that she has not been removed from office yeah that's what i mean yeah like like immediately yeah yeah um a 2020 uh three letter it already warned Jesus Christ I'm getting all these fucking messages about what I just updated this and so now it's sending me messages that I don't want every message they're just sending me messages gareth I don't want messages I don't want
Starting point is 00:07:40 I'm trying to read this this fucking dumb story about this broad And I think broad's the corrector. Now you lost me. Listen, I know you're getting messages you don't want Mr. Sinatra, but we're going to need you to calm down. All of a sudden, this broad is coming up me. There's not a day that goes by anymore where I don't, so I'm not like dealing with tech or some menial life thing and just think we live in absolute hell. Yeah. They've just decided that it's, they hate us so much that we're going to be punished for all these things that we're supposed to simplify everything.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Well, every, every update, every update is, do you want it worse so we can make money by data? Even outside of, even outside of Apple. I mean, Apple's the world. Everything. Everything. Everything that they're doing, you're just going like, fucking stop. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:08:32 So a 2020 letter had already warned about their aging fleet, the fire department, and need for funding for a wildland hand crew plus technology improvements designed to speed up emergency response. But Karen Bass did nothing. Well, because she had to give the cops all that money. On December 30th, the National Weather Service began coordinating calls around fire weather. By
Starting point is 00:08:57 January 3rd, it was looking like a record-breaking, sustained wind event with Gus exceeding 80 miles an hour. If I may, one of the things that's great about your friendship is in this time, Dave is texting and going,
Starting point is 00:09:13 this is going to be crazy. He's like, what is? He's like, what do you mean? He's like, this wind is going to cause massive fires. He's like, okay, buddy, go lay down. By January, two days before, a popular hiking trail in the Santa Monica Mountains, there was Jonathan Reindenneck, rider neck, rider neck. He's an Uber driver driver.
Starting point is 00:09:40 and he was pissed because he didn't have plans on New Year's Eve. Writers had complained that he was loudly ranting about capitalism. He used to live in the Palisades and he hated the Palisades. He'd recently become obsessed with arson watching videos online. There's no record of him lighting the fires, but he did call 9-11 over a dozen times and asked Chad-Jew... I'd rather than call it 911. And asked...
Starting point is 00:10:09 Okay. He did call 9-11 over a dozen times and asked chat. Calling it 9-11. Calling that 9-11 of what happened in 2001, 911. It's funny. He did ask chat, GPD. 9-11 emergency, it sure was. Listen, I, um...
Starting point is 00:10:29 And ask chat, GPT, quote, Are you at fault if a fire is lit because of your cigarettes? Oh, God, not you. You do whatever you like. You're awesome, no matter what you do. And then he got the fuck out of there. So it's a small brush fire, and firefighters quickly suppressed the eight-acre blaze and were told to roll up their hoses.
Starting point is 00:10:52 Now, that's shocking. Yes. The firefighters on scene were shocked because the fire was just suppressed, but it's not out. Veteran firefighter Scott Pike explicitly warned his captain that the ground was still dangerously hot, stating he found areas with red hot smoldering coals and could literally hear the ground crackling. His warnings were dismissed, and crews were told to move on. One firefighter texted a colleague, quote, this is a bad idea and the rest is history. The crews were told to ignore protocols, including the use of an infrared heat sensor that would have eased
Starting point is 00:11:40 spotted the fact that the fire was still smoldering underground and they headed home. Now, so that's one of two things. That is the fire department brass doing a, we'll show you. We'll show you. Oh, we'll show you Karen back. Just the same way the cops went on strike after Black Lives Matter and we're like, yeah, we're not going to go out to call. I remember that little dumpy New York guy?
Starting point is 00:12:07 Yeah. And so that's what, but this is the fire. This could be the fire or fire or they really don't have the money for overtime and they're worried. But I got to go with the. Is there outside of, I guess, hospitals, is there a more, I mean, it would be a terrible decision. But fire department overtime is the number one thing. A non-negotiable reality. If you don't fund or believe it, you are either purely evil or you are, like you're saying, you're either purely evil or you're completely disconnected from reality.
Starting point is 00:12:50 Particularly when you live in a place that has wildfires that had massive rains a year before and then a year of drying. That is perfect wildfire weather in time. 27. Sorry, what did I say? I just had a little, I kipped out. 2008 will be the fires. Can't wait. It could be the end of 227, but yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Okay, so at approximately 2.30 p.m. on January 5th. Now, this is what I've been calling that there's going to be fires for about three days. Because I just read scientists and they're like, this is crazy. And when scientists go, this is crazy. crazy. It's fucking crazy. It's happening right now. It is happening exactly right now. LA's emergency management department duty officers sent an internal warning about an upcoming firestorm to 100 officials, including over a dozen in Karen's office.
Starting point is 00:13:49 Quote, high confidence in damaging winds and elevated fire conditions occurring next week and included a bulletin from the National Weather Service announced there would be critical fire conditions. The next day, the National Weather Service issued this statement, quote, heads up a life-threatening destructive widespread windstorm all caps i i'm not trying to be shitty i think i don't think starting it with heads up helps if it's like you're talking about a keg party heads up if this is if there's ever been a time for a yo fuck face seven up heads up while windstorm coming heads up the winds were now expected to go up to 100 miles and hour.
Starting point is 00:14:33 In a good way. In a good way. It's got to clear out all that debris. So the city is told to hunker down and prepare for a climate disaster. So Karen Bass got on a plane and flew to Ghana to attend the inauguration of their new president. Remember when she said she was only going to go to D.C. and Sacramento? Mm-hmm. So that didn't happen.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Remember when you should stay behind if there's like literally the worst weather and that you can remember I mean, I'm a fucking knucklehead comedian who just reads the fucking internet and I knew a fire was coming. It was just where? So she's in Ghana. Her senior staffer
Starting point is 00:15:20 who oversaw the fire department he wasn't around. On January 7th He was also Ghana. You're the worst. I'm a good guy. I'm a good guy. And that might be the best one you've ever done.
Starting point is 00:15:36 No way. Usually they're bad, but that one was good. Usually they're pretty lazy, but that one worked. They're very lazy. That one's, you knocked that one out of the park. Very rude. You're lazy punitive. Only you can send a compliment like this.
Starting point is 00:15:50 Everything else you've done is crap. There you go. That was okay. On January 7th at 1030 a.m., a fire broke out on the rich hillside coastal neighborhood of Pacific Palisades. Southern California, an experience extraordinary dry weather. only receiving 4% of its typical precipitation since October the prior year. So go to Ghana.
Starting point is 00:16:09 And the winter before... Well, she was like, I want to go somewhere drier. I don't want to be somewhere a little drier. Probably wetter. Probably. Yeah. God. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:18 That would be crazy. I think it's wet. Okay. So the winter before is exceptionally wet, like we said, leading to a bun of vegetation that dried out. So it is the perfect setup for a fucking wind firestorm. And weather services are fucking. and screaming about it while Karen is on her government jet. Less than an hour after the fire started, homes were burning, and the fire had grown
Starting point is 00:16:40 10 times in size. Neighbors did not know what to do. Traffic backed all the way up the hill to the point where people abandoned their cars as the fire got close. So it's not an easy area to get in and out of. There is one road down to Highway 1, one like main one. So everyone kind of funnels to that road or you go out the other way, but that's where the fire is.
Starting point is 00:17:02 It's one of those. It's not great. Yeah. And I just drove through it like a week ago. And like the downtown area is still like every other building was burned. And like, um, so the instructions they were getting from the city were conflicting. One resident called it, quote, an apocalypse noting you can't evacuate even if you want to. The city didn't get an evacuation order out until 1230, two hours after fired started.
Starting point is 00:17:30 Should I mention that Karen is in Ghana. And the guy who's supposed to be in charge of the fire department is just not there on that day. What in the fucking Flintstone's level of shit is? How does that, even if you're like no one's around? Dude, in, in Altadena, there is a local, I don't know what he was. I started following him on Twitter years ago. He was just like a local Pasadena dude who got a meteorology degree. And he would just post local weather shit.
Starting point is 00:17:59 And I was like, oh, this is interesting. And he would always like post video. of him he'd go up into the mountains hiking and he'd bring a little like trash can or bag and he'd just collect trash on the way and he goes this is how much i picked up today like there's a lot of trash out there you should do it just a good guy and that night at like and so he ended up getting this big following of local people so he had like 3,000 people following him on his facebook page and he put out an alert at like i want to say like 10 p.m he said get the fuck out just get the fuck out there was like it was so far away and he said get the fuck out he saved they think he saved like 60 80 lives
Starting point is 00:18:40 like everybody just fucking bailed anybody listened to him bailed the city put out a warning six hours after him after the fire had gone through or no the county okay your gumferman is not functioning uh so two hours after the fire started people People have left. The traffic is backed up all the way down to the highway one. The cops were supposed to come direct traffic and stop people from freaking the fuck out. But they were late. And then when they got there, they were fucking shit at it.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Yeah. I mean, where was their budget at? Yeah. The cops are running down the road and yelling at people to, quote, run for your lives. That's good. I can do that. Just how they train you. My five-year-old could do that.
Starting point is 00:19:31 All right, boys, today we're going to work on freaking out. So when there's a problem, we've got two options. We shoot the fuck out of the person who maybe is causing it or just giving us the business. And then the other is we totally lose our minds more than anyone else. So we're meant to be looked at as a calming force. And if during that time someone is looking to us for guidance, if your gut tells you to lose your mind, just lose it. Can I bring a shotgun?
Starting point is 00:20:04 Absolutely. Can I bring two shotguns? Absolutely. Can I bring three shotguns? Absolutely. Can I bring four shotguns? Absolutely. Can I bring five shotguns?
Starting point is 00:20:10 Crazy not too. All right. So you're going to want to bring about five shotguns, freak the fuck out, and just be like the worst person in the neighborhood. Now, Captain, they were telling me that I should try to be more panicked than the people. Do what a kid would do. Oh, lose your mind. Okay. Crapping.
Starting point is 00:20:30 Your outfit is great. because we have a lot more money for those outfits. So just completely lose your shit, lose your mind, lose your cool. And like Ted said here, bring a lot of shotguns. All right, guys, you heard him. Now let's get our hands in and give me a Simi Valley on two. Sorry, there is a fire here. We should get the fuck out.
Starting point is 00:20:53 Yes. Can I shoot the fireman? Absolutely. Shooter the fireman is a great option. Those guys are overtime-y milkers. Oh, fuck. So we shot through your hoses. We have a lot of bullet money.
Starting point is 00:21:10 There is a single fire lane, which is the plan emergency residents were told to rely on, and that was on fire. Oh, God, I guess I never thought about that. Fire trucks and ambulances were blocked by abandoned cars. Dozens of empty cars littered Palisades Drive and Sunset Boulevard. So those are the two exits out. So a bulldozer was brought in to make a hole for the fire engines to pass through Steve Gutenberg went on TV
Starting point is 00:21:38 and begged evacuees to leave the keys in their cars so emergency crews could move them if needed. You are in such a fucking disaster that Steve Gutenberg looks good. Let me tell you this. This essentially sounds like how the right wing frames
Starting point is 00:21:53 all the problems in California. They're standing in Steve Gutenberg to tell people to leave their keys inside their car. What is this cocoon? What is this cocoon? Good one. This was made worse because before the fire,
Starting point is 00:22:14 the department brass decided to only have five of over 40 supplemental engines staffed and let 1,000 firefighters go home instead of remaining on duty during a generational windstorm. Now, this is... Now, this is a combination, I think, of fuck you. And also, they really don't have the overtime hours. Like, they're worried about actually the overtime hours. Like, that's a legitimate concern now. So it's a combination.
Starting point is 00:22:47 Now, the fire engines, they should have had all 40. Now, I think that is just blatantly, fuck you. But I'll also say, private equity bought the fire engine companies and are making the fire engines unoperable so they can make money repairing them. As well as there's now private industry where you can call an emergency fire department. It really, it's amazing for a country that loathes and detests socialism so much without really digging deep enough to realize what it is. Because the system that you think is what truly helps America is the one you're going to start
Starting point is 00:23:29 to get with your fire departments. whereas the one that you had is actually the socialist one. But it'll be fine. Karen's team tries to calm the situation down by lying. They said the L.A. Fire Department pre-deployed resources overnight. This is technically true, but they had done it in Hollywood and the Valley, not the Palisades. But it almost wouldn't have mattered because a couple hours after the minimal crews started fighting the blaze, they ran out of water.
Starting point is 00:24:04 Because the local reservoir was undergoing repairs and it was fucking empty as it was being repaired due to a torn cover. Repairs had begun early in 2004 and were not done yet, even though they should have been. It was now January 2025. The emergency infrastructure of the second largest city in America couldn't fight the exact type of climate crisis event. that experts had been warning about for over a fucking decade. Instead, just like Karen, all previous administrations had put as much money as possible into... The cops! The cops!
Starting point is 00:24:47 As it went on, firefighters had been working for 36 hours straight and weren't letting a little thing like running out of water stop them. They improvised. Filling up their hoses from swimming pools and other alternative water sources. Excuse me! No. Excuse me. No. Excuse me.
Starting point is 00:25:03 That is a salt water pool. You're going to hurt all the vegetation. Excuse me. That is a salt. Excuse me. Excuse me. I understand. That is flown.
Starting point is 00:25:18 Excuse me. Hey. No. I'm the producer of Bugsy. We produce Bugsy. You are not. Hey. Tell you boy.
Starting point is 00:25:31 I know it's on our house. Tell your boy! But the gangster... Wow. Wow. Wow. What? You will never work in this town.
Starting point is 00:25:43 What? What do you mean what town? Oh. The worst thing of all was a Palisades residence knew it was going to happen. They had experienced a smaller version of this during a wildfire in 2020, and it's seen what happened during the Lahaina fire in Maui in 2023 and pleaded with Los Angeles City Hall to fix their clearly broken evacuation plan and Karen Bass's office ignored them. Once Karen was back from Ghana, David Blevins of Sky News cut up with her at the airport and
Starting point is 00:26:26 asked, quote, do you owe citizens an apology for being absent while their homes were burning? Do you regret cutting the fire department budget by millions of dollars? Madam Mayor, and she just stared blankly ahead. Is it worth playing that clip at all? It is a shocking. You could. You know, she's not going to say anything. She doesn't say anything.
Starting point is 00:26:49 No, but it's just the, it's, it's, you can be, you can try to pull it up. It's, it's genuinely crazy. Again, we cannot emphasize this enough. it was so fucking obvious a disaster was going to happen. Like, I don't think there's ever been a time in my life where I have been more certain that we were about to have a fucking epic disaster. Like, it was like, oh, there's a stage five hurricane
Starting point is 00:27:17 off the coast and it's going to hit us. It was going to fucking happen. And it happened in two places. One of them, luckily for her, outside of the city border. It's in LA County. But the other one was in LA County. And she's fucking lucky there weren't more, honestly.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Okay, this isn't, this is under a minute, but she's standing there. And she looks overwhelmed, confused. But also aware of not saying anything and how bad it is. Yeah, they probably told her don't say anything when you get there. For being absent while their homes were burning. Red cutting the fire department budget by millions of dollars, Madam Mayor. Have you nothing to say today?
Starting point is 00:28:11 Have you absolutely nothing to say to the citizens today? Elon Musk says that you're utterly incompetent. Are you considering your position? Funny part. Madam Mayor, have you absolutely nothing to say to the citizens today who are dealing with this disaster? She's just standing. She's just standing, staring. like she looks like she's listening to someone else.
Starting point is 00:28:34 No apology for them. She turned away a little bit. Do you think you should have been visiting Ghana while this was unfolding back home? Okay, you know what the worst thing about that is to me? She's wearing her little emergency jacket. Oh, wow. She's wearing a little fucking emergency jacket. What you do?
Starting point is 00:28:51 Heck of a job. Brownie, roll up your sleeves. I mean, fuck off. Performative care. People fucking died. I think nine or ten people died like seven. thousand buildings lost. Like, it's, it's catastrophic on a level that is like... But I also think that, like, those death, the death numbers are terrible, but it's the level of,
Starting point is 00:29:12 as someone whose house burned down, it... Not in that fire. No. I'm just, people might have been confused. Yeah. Oh, yeah. It was a Wisconsin fire. Yeah. It was the only one. And it wasn't a wildfire. You lit the fire. My mother, my mother, you lit the fire. What? It doesn't matter. But truly, you know, it happens so fast and it's just gone. Yeah. And you're not, and so the displacement and the like kind of delayed trauma from it, but then the like the thing, all the stuff you lose and all the, you know,
Starting point is 00:29:56 just the level of actual quick devastation is. I mean, it's... Hard to process. Yeah, and it's... It wasn't just like... It's a weeping event. It's a endlessly sad event. And the community is destroyed.
Starting point is 00:30:09 There's no more community. Yeah, and if it's your whole city... Kids lost their schools. They had to move to another place. Like, all... Like, your friends moved here. Like, I know people in the Altadina Fire, and they couldn't find anywhere to live.
Starting point is 00:30:22 I know one family that had to live in three different apartments. Because they couldn't find a two-beder or a three-bedroom or a three-bedroom. So they had to split. up their family in three apartments across the city. Not to mention the, I mean, I'm sure you'll get into it. But, okay, so you have this devastation and then it's time for the bureaucracy. I mean, it really is the one, two. Yeah, let's go with the bullshit.
Starting point is 00:30:44 Yeah. Oh, it's painful. Let's make it as impossible as it can be for you to regain dignity. Yeah. Yeah. But this was like, this was her moment to come out and like stand there and go, we're going to do everything we can't. Like, fucking just, you had to have. How long is the flight from fucking Ghana?
Starting point is 00:31:02 It's long. 12 hours? Probably longer, but I don't know. How much fucking time did you have to come up with different scenarios of reporters? You should have honestly come back with like a Ghana stone and been like, this stone is meant to fight and rebuild. Yeah, something dumb. Some bullshit. But maybe she was like, oh, I did the fucking scarf thing after BLM and that.
Starting point is 00:31:27 That worked, though. That would have been funny for her to be like, for her to do can't abo, like can't be, can't be again? She does another can't be. We will fight. Stop it. So she, so if you can't see there, she's just staring blankly head, looking like a toy from Toy Story when the kids watch in the room. And the reporter just knows, he's like, she's boxed in too.
Starting point is 00:31:52 So he's like, I'm going to keep going. When another reporter asked her to press commas a little bit later, she wagged a finger. So this is when they were like, you've got to be more. forceful. And instead of being more forceful in a positive way, she wags her finger at the reporter and says, let me finish. Like now she's like mad. Which is another thing to do. That pissed everyone else off more. Once she read a script placeholder aloud telling residents that crucial information can be found a quote URL. Uh, what? Yeah. What? That's one of the worst things I've heard. The owner of the LA Times What the fuck?
Starting point is 00:32:31 Just go to URL. Huh? I don't know. The owner of the LA Times said his paper's endorsement of her was a mistake. Now, fire chief Kristen Crowley placed the blame squarely on the budget cuts. But again, they were a little bit on strike. But because she did stuff, but again, they would not have been a little bit on strike if she'd give them the fucking money. But because she did stuff like sent home 1,000 firefighters during a historic windstorm,
Starting point is 00:32:59 Karen was able to scapegoat her, firing her on February 21st. Now, while the fire chief did do dumb shit, they were emphatically not the only ones at fault here. The firefighters union, which is almost as right wing as the cop's union, shot back at Karen, quote, Kristen Crowley was fired for telling the truth. Was Kristen Crowley the lesbian? Yeah. The right wing had a hell of a time with that, too. Yeah, that was the whole thing.
Starting point is 00:33:27 Crowley sued the city and alleged, among other things, that Karen didn't tell key city personnel, including Crowley, that she was leaving the country during a major. She didn't tell the fucking fire chief. She wasn't going to Mexico. I mean, Jesus Christ. Crazy. A year later, in an unguarded moment during a podcast after a formal interview was over, but the cameras are still ruling. Karen admitted that both she and the fire department had, quote, botched it. her team tried to get this cut but failed and it ran she was also talking about the deadlier fire
Starting point is 00:34:03 in altadena which was not la city but la county karen's office obsessed over the after-action report right so they're putting together report to to do show everything that went wrong and you know like the democrats should have done what the election but didn't do well no they did and then they changed it they did hit it they hid it what do they hide it they fucking hide it And that was their whole thing they wanted to do in the autopsy. The whole thing was the autopsy. And then they're like, ooh, it's not what we wanted. Never mind.
Starting point is 00:34:34 So Karen does the same thing. She starts changing minute details to massage. It's so frustrating because you really are, the Democrats are so easy to hate. Yeah. And it's the, the optics of that sometimes are that, oh, so you're right. When you watch a movie. And there is a good guy and a bad guy. But then there's another guy who's supposed to be a good guy.
Starting point is 00:35:03 And it turns out he's working for the bad guy. That in the movie is always the worst guy. Yeah. He's the betrayal. And that movie is America, but there's no good guy. But yeah, but they act like they're a good guy and they're not. Yeah. So she's changing, they are.
Starting point is 00:35:20 They're changing minute details to massage the messaging into a narrative that wouldn't hurt Karen standing or make the city liable. Like language is softened. A section titled Failures Becomes Primary Challenges. The section about the violations of National Firefighter Safety Guidelines was removed.
Starting point is 00:35:40 They fucked with it so much that the original author... Fire was changed to smoke. Hot. Hot. They fucked with it so much that the original author declined to endorse the final version, calling it, quote,
Starting point is 00:35:55 highly unprofessional and inconsistent with our established standards. Well, by the way, the original auth, it was like, I was like, I did a lot of massaging. Yeah. In late May 2025, Trump Brown shirts, also known as I, stormed, troopered into Los Angeles. They hit everywhere Latino workers gathered and made people disappear. Abandoned vehicles littered the streets. Food carts full of food lay vacant along the roads. was safe. Ice arrested over 120 people in just one 24-hour period. At Paramount in
Starting point is 00:36:31 southeastern L.A. County, protesters stood their ground against the masked massed in cells, which led to Trump enacting his plan to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to L.A. So some protesters blocked freeways, a few lit Waymo's on fire because all decent people hate and distrust them. It's an awesome thing to do. Yeah, it was great. All were summarily punished by the LAPD who really looked like they're trying to defend ICE. But that might be because of Jim McDonnell, the police chief that Karen Bass chose. Jim used to be L.A. Sheriff.
Starting point is 00:37:07 And in that role, he frequently collaborated with ICE. He loved handing over undocumented people to ICE. And now his LAPD was defending ICE, firing off over 600 less lethal bullets at protesters and journalists in just one weekend. Now, can we just take a moment to highlight the fact that under Karen Bass's leadership, the only real element that is not cared for or respected is water. We love wind, fire, and ice.
Starting point is 00:37:42 Oh, yeah. And water, whatever. Gareth, the Dalep is brought to by I am 8. Later that month, the LA Press Club sued the city. documenting at least 16 journalists detained in one night and multiple reporters struck by less lethal rounds while clearly displaying press credentials. There's the one that's... Including an Australian photojournalist hit live on air.
Starting point is 00:44:00 And the New York Post photographer shot in the forehead. Now, I know one journalist who was in Portland during the, whatever, 2018 fight again. against Border Patrol and they were aiming at press. When they saw the press on the vest, that's what they were aiming for. In response to all of them... It's very strange to remember how she was back in the day. Oh, she used to... She would have been out fighting the cops.
Starting point is 00:44:32 Yes. She 100% would have been out on the street. And now she's in charge of it. In response to all the state violence, Karen ordered a curfew for one square mile to punish the protesters. She used language like looters and bad actors placing the blame on the reaction to the raids, not the ice raids themselves. It happens fast. Yeah, it does. After a week, she lived to the curfew and congratulated herself on protecting businesses.
Starting point is 00:45:02 But they were never after businesses, Karen. They were after people. Yeah, straw man stuff, a straw business. As for helping the 10% or so of L.A. that's undocumented and their family, least Karen teamed up with their with a private emperor Private emperor Karen, yeah, should be.
Starting point is 00:45:21 Karen teamed up with a private enterprise to put together some gift cards with a couple hundred bucks on. I can't with this fucking, I can't with this woman. She's so fucking evil. She's just a level of evil that's fucking astounding.
Starting point is 00:45:39 You remember, what was the last time you watched National Amputin's Christmas vacation? It's been a while. So essentially the story becomes his boss, his boss is supposed to give him a bonus, gives him a jam of the month club. Clark Rizwald. So he ends up getting like a jam of the month club thing. And then they go kidnap the boss.
Starting point is 00:46:05 And the boss has a change of heart when he sees the Christmas spirit and all that stuff. And he gives like an actual bonus and gives everyone an actual bonus. and every year I watch that movie and every year more and more at Christmas I just go, this is such fucking fantasy and yet when it came out it was like yeah, capitalism is terrible but you know what?
Starting point is 00:46:24 There's still a modicum of heart in here and now you're just like, no, it's a couple hundred dollars. It's like don't give them anything. I mean, I understand this. All the undocumented people I knew were just staying in their homes and apartments too frightened to leave.
Starting point is 00:46:42 They couldn't make. money they they were scared to go out and get food so people were bringing them food and the essentials like a couple hundred bucks on a gift card what the fuck are you talking about it's so insulting to well what's insulting is she didn't use any i mean it's essentially trying to put a wildfire out with a dry reservoir well she needed to stop ice in any way she could she did not use any of her extraordinary powers she as a may uh had his mayor by initiating an emergency declaration. She could have requisitioned housing for people who could no longer work, built rapid, built resourced rapid response infrastructure, expedited hiring, or reassigning of city
Starting point is 00:47:23 attorneys and outside counsel to support the flood of new fourth and fifth amendment cases. And most importantly, a publicly funded legal defense and cash assistance fund. L.A. has one called Represent L.A. She could have reallocated the money from the overstuffed police budget to help protect immigrant lives. She did none of that. You can't live under Trump and hear any more of this sort of Senate parliamentarian shit. Yeah. You can use your powers for good too, people. Yes, absolutely. So Karen is now bruised, beaten, and beleaguered. And then Spencer Pratt jumps into the mayor's race. His public identity was being the guy you're supposed to hate. His memoir was literally titled The Guy You Love to Hate Confessions from a Reality TV Villain.
Starting point is 00:48:15 His framing of himself was, quote, selfish, undisciplined, and unprincipled. After his show The Hills ended, he and wife Heidi tore through $10 million, including $500,000 in Birkenbags and his addiction to healing crystals that cost over $1 million. Well, the good ones you have to pay for. Well, yeah, the really good healing crystals are a lot of money. You can't just get some shitty cheap healing crystal. You're going to die of cancer. Yeah, no.
Starting point is 00:48:46 A lot of those crystals will do bad. They filed for bankruptcy. Did I ever tell you the story about my mother-in-law, who's an absolute nut job? And we took her to the hospital for some reason. I don't remember why. She ended up being fine. But the nurse was like, what's in your bra? And she, like, reaches in and takes out all these crystals.
Starting point is 00:49:07 Oh, gosh. You'd rather find crystal meth than actual crystals. Now, wait, can I tell my Hill story very quickly? Yeah. So there's a bar when I used to do improv at the Improv Olympic, and I was pretty broke. And we were at this bar called Big Wangs, and I had a friend of mine, Ryan,
Starting point is 00:49:29 who had been working commercially, a good amount, Ryan Gall. And I was there with Steve Berg and Ryan Gall, and sure enough, the fucking Hills was shooting. Yeah. And so it was Lauren Conrad and someone else who I don't remember. And then these two kind of dushy looking dudes. And I was like, it would be so funny to just walk into frame while they're shooting. Because they're like film.
Starting point is 00:49:53 It's crazy. It's so awkwardly weird. You know, it's kind of like fake. And yet they're doing multiple, whatever. So Ryan goes, I'll pick up the bar tab if you do. So yeah, I'm in. So I'm hammered. And I just walk up to them.
Starting point is 00:50:08 And I just was like. like playing, you know, doing my bit. I was like, how did the, do you guys get jalapeno poppers? And they were all like, what? And I was like, what kind of appetizers are you getting? And they were all like, what are you, what? And I was like, cool, all right.
Starting point is 00:50:23 Well, and I could see my friends laughing. So I'm like, well, I'm here. Like, let's party. You know, so I'm like, make it, I made it real horribly awkward for like two and a half minutes. And, and, yeah, that's basically, well, and then, and then someone with a release form comes up. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:37 And like, we sign this? and I was like, because you think you might be using this footage for some reason? I was like, prediction. I won't be in the show. So Spencer and his wife filed for bankruptcy in 2015. He would go on Alex Jones show several times promoting wild conspiracy theories. His and his parents' homes had burned down in the Palisades fire. And his righteous anger at Karen for this fueled the,
Starting point is 00:51:08 run for office. It was a rage-filled campaign harnessing the frustration against the LA city government in the same way that Trump had done. There's a lot in common between Pratt and Trump very, very much. So that was a concern for everybody. In early 2006, he was the most real challenger to Karen and gaining popularity with each Karen fail. So he was doing what Trump did. Yeah, we were, we were, we were, we were definitely freaking out a little bit. We're like, she could actually lose because people fucking hate her so much. And he is, and he's a big homeless people go to the desert camp structure. Yeah. Oh yeah. But it does, it does look like she could easily win at Lanside. We're just concerned that she could fail to the point. The concern is that
Starting point is 00:51:53 people just wouldn't vote. Yeah. And then he would win. Well, and again, it's what, it's what the Democrats do so well. Yeah. It's what Newsome does. It's what they all do. Or Biden, it's where you go, oh, for fuck's sake. Well, we can't have Spencer Pratt. Yeah. I mean, Bessera. is going to come in way lower than they think he is. Oh, yeah. Way lower. Then at the last minute... Do you think he could lose?
Starting point is 00:52:13 No, because the other guy's such a fucking idiot. Yeah. Then at the last minute before the filing deadline, Nithia Rahman jumped in. Which was crazy. It was crazy. She was an urban planner turned city council member. She was the first council member with staffers dedicated to the homeless crisis and it showed.
Starting point is 00:52:30 Where the entire city saw an increase in homelessness, Nithia's districts slashed it by 50%. Yep. This was an existential threat to Karen because she could no longer claim to be both the conservative and the progressive wings of the Democratic voter base. It also potentially split the vote enough that Pratt could come in second in a runoff, which would set up the Erie Trump versus Hillary type election in L.A. I like literally. All of the DSA city council members back bass, which is insane. now LA's a weird power structure thing and there's a lot of fear of going against the incumbent because of the power that they do wield.
Starting point is 00:53:19 But also they were just being little fucking children because Nithia did not give them a heads up. Yeah. I mean, she entered like she came in really late. Her campaign was a bit disorganized. It was bad. But regardless, it was like, it was very exciting when she came in because you were like, okay, there is actually, you know, there is a third option. But the DSA members on the city council are fucking embarrassing. Even if you don't back Nithia, backing Karen Bass is fucking unexcusable.
Starting point is 00:54:02 It's been really strange at times to watch them. Yeah, it's like they can all go fuck themselves. I was just like, what? Like, you don't have to back Nathia. You cannot back Karen fucking bass. Okay. So that spring, the LA Times drops a bomb. For years, Karen's main talking point,
Starting point is 00:54:22 whatever someone criticized her Inside Safe program, was to point to the fact that the city was seeing a real reduction in unshelters homelessness. But in April of 2026, of the 5,800 people inside safe had moved into temporary housing at a cost of over 340 million per year, about 40% had left the program and returned to the streets. For that amount, they could have paid for each... The cops, a lot more money. The cops could have had all that.
Starting point is 00:54:55 That would have been awesome for the cops. For that amount, they could have paid for each of them to have a studio apartment plus mental health and addiction services. city controller Kenneth Mejia found that at least 513 million had gone unspent in one year. Every city should have a Kenneth Mihia. He's fucking awesome.
Starting point is 00:55:15 Because he's the guy who, and she, oh boy, I should try to undermine him. I don't think I even put that in here. But he is the guy who just keeps going, nope, this is the budget. Nope, this is what she's doing. Nope. And just keeps putting the fucking numbers up. As usual on election night, Pratt was
Starting point is 00:55:31 had by 10 points, but over the days that slipped. Nithia chipped away and the runoff was set. Nithia versus Karen in the general election and of course all the right wingers and Pratt was screaming it was stolen but again the way we counter votes and you can actually
Starting point is 00:55:47 in L.A. You can go to the vote counting center and stand on a balcony and watch them counting the votes. It's a very methodical Well but Dave you're pretending or giving them the you give them the sense that seeing reality
Starting point is 00:56:03 means they're going to talk about reality. Reality doesn't really weigh into what they're going for, does it? So two weeks later, in the proudly but poor Latino neighborhood of Boyle Heights, a fire broke out at a $500,000 square foot frozen food warehouse. The fire burned for days. Now, the smoke wasn't the immediate danger. It was the anhydrous ammonia and hydrogen fluoride, which can cause respiratory illness, vomiting,
Starting point is 00:56:33 lung hemorrhaging, cardiac arrest, seizures, and death. Once the refrigeration died, about 85 million pounds of seafood began to rot in what was a brutal heat wave. And Karen Bass was... Calling it Cevice! No, she's out of town. Where was she? Where was she?
Starting point is 00:56:59 She was sipping cocktails of the opening of the incredibly ugly Obama presidential center. Oh, my God. She flew back the next day to tell residents of Boyle Heights that the air was not dangerous. This shit is crazy. There's no indication this smoke is toxic. Meanwhile, the air quality management district rated the neighborhood very unhealthy and urged residents to stay indoors. And if they had to leave their home wear an N95 mask. the LAPD was texting people to shelter in place because of, quote, toxic smoke.
Starting point is 00:57:41 Many people did not have masks. So heroes like 84-year-old Manuel Vaya got on his bicycle and handed them out to neighbors passing through his own coughing fits to do so. I don't know where the fuck to actually start. The amount that we have allowed the air quality thing to, because, Because look, it's air, so there's a little bit of a passable fib structure in that. But they keep, they, anytime, we're at the point when any time any time any disaster happens and your local government or any government is telling you that the air quality is fine, and you can't leave, you should try to leave.
Starting point is 00:58:26 You at least should shelter, you should have a mask. But then on top of that, to have someone with a name, I can only assume would be a problem. person for ICE out there handing out the things to help people actually instead of the city government? Instead of the city government? Well, why would they? It would look like an admission of guilt
Starting point is 00:58:46 if you were to hand those out there. It's East Palestine. It's everything. It's whenever this happens, it's Flint. It's all these things. Drink the water. Shut the fuck up. It's the fucking World Trade Center emergency. World Trade Center emergency. Yep. It's just it's all that. All those guys are fucking dying like crazy. Yeah, literally. The deal should be
Starting point is 00:59:03 I remember when they introduced at the airport those like scan tron machines and the secretary of, I don't know if it was Homeland Security or Health and Human, one of them wouldn't get in it. I didn't know that. The one that you do this, your hands across. Because it is supposed to be, at the time, it was like pretty radiative. Like it was like, I don't know what it is now, but it's like, oh, my God. You can ask for a pat down. Oh, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:34 You don't have to do. Oh, boy, yeah. No, there's nothing, nothing better than a pat down. And then that's when you put like a Ziploc bag with a couple holes of it full of mayo in your pants. And then someone they push. Or I'll just take a shit. Yeah, or shitting's fine. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:51 Just a quick piss. Yeah. Just piss a little. So. Sorry my piss is Ken. I wish you hadn't said that. So the LA Times found that emergency. room visits within 10 miles more than triple during the fire.
Starting point is 01:00:07 St. John's community health sent in mobile clinics and found that nearly half of patients had, quote, serious acute and devastating health problems predicting significant increase in asthma rates and even more cardiac and mental health cases. Then Gareth came the rats. Whoa. And then Gareth came the flies from the rotting meat. it was a fucking epidemic of flies it was like it's it's so much rotting meat I mean the place was covered in flies they were all over the neighborhood
Starting point is 01:00:45 the smell was insane the smell was insane it's rotting it's I don't remember what I said hundreds of thousands of pounds of rotting in France they would strip their leader naked and tie them to the meat piles yeah so the rats in flies is when I was just like, oh, God, I'm out. But at least Karen was out of town at the time. It really is crazy to think of where she, I mean, the deadening of empathy. Yeah, it's really crazy. So business is nearby had to close because customers stopped coming.
Starting point is 01:01:16 Three weeks in, with rats still descending on the rotten seafood inside the warehouse, Bass attended a town hall with hundreds of residents. Some held signs reading were being poisoned. As soon as she took the stand. stage, Karen was booed. When she tried to speak, they yelled lies, you weren't here. We don't believe you. One attendee said, quote, they've been ignoring us since day one. And another emotional simply said, I am very disgusted. Karen tried to explain that it was an environmental injustice because communities of color disproportionately bear the brunt of environmental disasters,
Starting point is 01:01:57 which is true, except she's the one in charge. and she was making them bear it. It's also kind of a... What the fuck? It's kind of a weird broad point in that moment to be like... It's still, but like, yeah, but because that's all she has. Yeah. She's a shitty politician.
Starting point is 01:02:12 She's a Democrat. She goes back to what she knows is true. Yes. Which is this is a systematic... Pick. Pick. No empathy or performative. I mean... Which one do you want?
Starting point is 01:02:22 Performative, I guess. Yeah. And most people are feeling that now. So after she said that people fucking flipped out. Karen said, quote, we can have a contest of who can yell the loudest. That's also a classic Democratic line. They fucking always say that shit with those protesters.
Starting point is 01:02:39 The one concrete action she promised to take was to clean up the situation within 45 days, which was immediately walked back by the lineage warehouse owner representatives who called that timeline very aggressive. The dollop is brought to you by Quince. Oh, baby. So, you know those,
Starting point is 01:03:00 Those pieces of clothing that you have in your closet or your chest of drawers or whatever, the sweater goes with everything. And the thing you're always, you just keep wearing it. You just keep putting it on and wearing it because it feels great. It looks great. The tea that you just go for first. That is Quince. It's, Dave, this is what I call it.
Starting point is 01:03:21 And they've asked me to stop and I'm not going to stop. I call them my signature pieces. These are my pieces that when I go out, I go, hey, I got this. A lot. goes with this, but this is the headliner. This is your corduroy jacket. This is your jean jacket. This is some of these linen pants you won't shut up about.
Starting point is 01:03:39 These are the things that are the headliners. And Quince just the quality, the options, it can't be better. You cannot beat Quince, period. Garrett, is there a Quince piece that's become your go-to in your wardrobe? And what surprised you most about the quality when you first tried it? It's the best way to support the show. So lineage is the company that owned the warehouse. nail and warehouses all over the country. I got a pitch.
Starting point is 01:05:04 You open a sizzler. Hey, that's a really good idea. Yeah, I know. Or just put a sizzler sign up on the warehouse. How are you? Can I get, are you guys still doing the all you've got rotten crab? Was your heart. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:05:23 After, when I asked if she would hold another town hall, Karen's answer was, quote, we'll see. she did however hold another town hall with business owners and even they told her that her administration relied way too much on social media when the people of the neighborhood needed real time in person help now gareth yusuf rob was one of karen's closest advisors but once she doesn't pay he's just like an unpaid really close advisor he's like a fixture at press conferences he spoke to the media for her and two days before the fire broke out, signed on as a crisis communications consultant for lineage, the warehouse owner. One problem was he was now being paid by the company that the fire was named after lineage, but still remained inside Karen's private internal communications channels. so he could see every press inquiry her office was fielding and their internal deliberations
Starting point is 01:06:33 about how to respond a man who worked for the company that the mayor's office should be holding accountable was in her inner circle getting every piece of fucking information it's fucking insane. It's fucking insane. Just from an optics fucking standpoint, what are you doing? Like, how are you this bad at this shit? Like, it's fucking crazy.
Starting point is 01:07:02 They're so lazy. She's like Trump. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Less aggressive Trump. Oh, God. Deer in the headlights of Trump.
Starting point is 01:07:13 It's fucking insane. I mean, it's really insane. Yeah, Trump, like, we're sick at Trump. It's crazy, but when he had the punch that worked for some people, I mean, it would just be like, The fire started me. So this brings up questions, having this guy on the inside, right? Like when Karen was the only government rep of everybody saying the air wasn't poisonous, where was that coming from?
Starting point is 01:07:43 More conflicts of interest were found. It was discovered that the owner of the building, donated the legal maximum to Karen. Oh, God. And the fire department, whose leadership Karen had changed, refuses now to answer press questions about its knowledge of the chemicals inside the warehouse, despite that being part of its job. Oh, God.
Starting point is 01:08:10 Years earlier... How do you... Even outside of no actual empathy for people who you're... eventually killing. How do you not, like, how do you do it? How do you go home? Just turn off the switch and be like, okay, I did a good job. It's Wagoo.
Starting point is 01:08:29 I have no idea. I couldn't live with myself. No. No fucking way in hell. But I think that's the thing. It's like the, you know, the opposite of the cream rise. It's like, it's the opposite of the meritocracy. It's the dead and, yeah, the worst.
Starting point is 01:08:42 The worst are elevated because they're the only ones who feel, it's like that manufacturing consent moment. I mean, it's just like, you know, you're there because you fit the job that is terrible. Yeah. You'll do it. You'll do it. You'll do it. You'll do it.
Starting point is 01:08:56 You'll do it. Most of us are discussed about it. It's like the guy who signs on to be an executioner. Yeah. And then shoots into the veins twice a woman and then she's still alive and not. Do you see a connection between that and firing squads? Oh, fuck. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:09:11 100%. Um, so years earlier, California had fined lineland. thousands of dollars for violating multiple safety standards related to respiratory protections. Well, no wonder they're called lineage. Nationally, it was worse. Thousands in fines. A warehouse in Washington State burned for 60 straight days. What the fuck?
Starting point is 01:09:32 DSA council member Yisabelle Gerado, not the mayor, actually did something. Calling for an investigation, 10 million in cleanup funds, severely increased penalties for serious violations, increasing public transit service to shorten residence. time spent outdoors, funding for neighborhood councils to distribute air purifiers and protective equipment, and a radical transformation of the city's response to environmental disasters that puts the victims first. You know who would be great in a situation like this? 30-year-old Karen Bass.
Starting point is 01:10:08 It'd be so funny to have Karen Bass time travel and come meet herself now. What the fuck? It's me. I go bad. Now. Do you know the rotting meat inside the warehouse? These residents are indeed. That's me.
Starting point is 01:10:22 Don't you understand? You're the, you're the... It's the only way for us to eat gun and wagoo. As this was happening, there was a massive push to revise the city charter, which is L.A.'s Constitution. Karen was supposed to have appointed commissioners to a board to lead the efforts to make Los Angeles more fair, reworking the balance of power. But she slow-walked it, leaving them with barely any time to do their jobs.
Starting point is 01:10:46 One reform was taking oversight of the police away from an... unelected body of mayor-appointed ex-cops and their sympathizers and putting it under the purview of a democratically elected city council. It was an open secret that Karen, at behest of her endorsers of the cop union, had killed the effort. She also did this thing recently where she tried to take away all the power from Kenneth Meeha because he was putting up all the numbers showing how fuck she is for the budget bankrupting the city. And like we had to, and they did it like last minute and we had to like get people down there organized to get people to go down there and fucking yell at them so they didn't do it but it was like a whole fucking thing like she's
Starting point is 01:11:30 just coming she's just vile despite all this karen got good news a new poll from a median strategy showed her up by double digits over nithia and she shared it widely now there was one problem it was uh fake media and strategies revealed themselves to be a show's experiments basically it was one guy fucking around karen called for an event investigation into the hoax you can't what what investigation what a stric a guy a guy fucked you he made you look dumb leave a bee it's a fucking an investigation we will be uh soon as swat to the jerky boys house it's not it's not illegal to put out a fake poll it's also very stupid to highlight it yeah um basically it's just this one dude fucking
Starting point is 01:12:15 around and karen calls for an investigation more labor began to back nithia between In August and September, 26, two of the most powerful unions flipped their support to Nithia. Karen's first executive director, Karen's first executive directive as mayor, 81, which was the one to battle homelessness, had chosen not to pay workers on the project's fair wages and benefits. So her decision was the people building homes in Los Angeles shouldn't be able to afford to live in the city itself. So that made construction workers mad. So 60,000 construction workers and their carpenter's union switched in Nithia ramen. The union committed a reported $3 million to a pack backing your campaign. And Nithi was also, Nithi also refused like corporate money.
Starting point is 01:13:10 So that also helped the union like switch. So and refusing corporate. money includes the vacation rental market, which hurts hotel union workers. So they gave 1.5 million to Karen. So now unite here, which is local leaven, which is a hospitality union that works in a lot of hotels. They back. Those are like the two big unions. So, and these are like Spanish speakers. They knock on fucking doors. Like these are the two unions that like get out and hit the ground. In response to these defections, Karen pointed out that over 30 labor unions still support her. But most individual union endorsements in a mayoral race are like transactional
Starting point is 01:13:52 and passive like a board vote, a logo on a state mailer, maybe a little check. They're about like relationships and access, which incumbents have more of, but they don't like generate people on the ground knocking on doors. They're not, not that important. So Bass's allies know this. And one told political Politico about the defections of those two unions, quote, these are serious unions with people and money. That was a bit surprising. Nithia also got the DSA endorsement, which is very contentious. As some say, she has gone back on some promises, not been hard enough on Israel, and some
Starting point is 01:14:32 other stuff I agree with. I think we both agree with. Some, I don't, but DSLA does get shit done, so that's also a big deal for her. They have won at least one council member every cycle since 2020. And they helped get rid of L.A. shit-ass, Israel-loving city attorney, Heidi Feinstein Soto. Who was crazy. Who was crazy. So Karen recently saw the way the wind was blowing and tried to do her best impression of Mam Dani.
Starting point is 01:15:08 She responded to a viral video. So, Mamdani is like set up this thing, which China has been doing for years, which is you just make a video of a pothole. And then the guys come out and fix the pothole. So Mamdani started doing that in New York. And it's been very successful. So Nithia, I mean, Nithia. So Karen's like, I'll do that. So there's a viral video about a massive pothole.
Starting point is 01:15:31 And she does a video about setting crews to clean it up. And when they arrived, there was a car parked over it and they couldn't do anything. So it's just a total failure. She's so fucking dumb. She's just so bad at all of this. She's so bad. She literally is just someone who should be community organizing. She's not a fucking politician.
Starting point is 01:15:52 And she's evil now. Yeah. She is the cold heart of evil. So fucking great. Someone parked over it? Yeah. So can we do anything? No.
Starting point is 01:16:03 Well, once they leave. We're streaming. Oh. On top of all this, thecentresquare.com reported a major conflict of interest story. So in L.A., there's a cap on how much money a corporation give to an elected official. But no cap on when politicians direct their donors to give money to their favorite charities or third-party organization. So it's like a little end-round. Not technically a bribe, but it's kind of close.
Starting point is 01:16:34 It's definitely illegal to cover it up, which is exactly what Karen did. not disclosing them to the public, Karen had companies with hundreds of millions of dollars of business before the city give over 38 million worth of donations, setting her up to break the record of most beheaded payments of a mayor ever. These payments were made sometimes days before the company's contracts were being decided by City Hall. For example, Karen had Amazon pay over $232,000 to Community Coalition. and the nonprofit she founded way back in the 90s,
Starting point is 01:17:16 just six days before the city fully migrated to Amazon Web Services and had its contract extended. That's wild timing. It's also nice to dust off your old organization that used to do good. Now to just be like, yeah, let's import evil. Other payments included a million dollars from Airbnb when the city was debating a price, gouging lawsuit, more money from Amazon to integrate AI into the 311. system, which was paid the day the committee approved it, and 720,000 from Wells Fargo, the
Starting point is 01:17:49 same day the council extended the city's contract with them, which pained the bank, five million. Yeah, friend of show. So as the mayor's race stands now, Karen's allies are starting to worry, quote, I think you have to give Nithia the advantage. I really do, one of them said, speaking anonymously. I think we could turn that around, but the energy is with Nithia, and it's unfortunate. Another described the mood in the mayor's orbit, quote,
Starting point is 01:18:13 I have a version of this assessment or conversation every 30 minutes. People are very worried about it and focused on it. Major consultants are now advising her to occupy the right wing lane in the election, which she's happily done, going negative on Nithia on homelessness and cops. One of the funniest fucking things she did was she said during a debate, she was like, and you have missed this many city council votes. And Nithy was like, well, I'm on these two. committees and they're at the same time. So I had to miss them. And then Bass goes, well,
Starting point is 01:18:50 you shouldn't be doing those committees? And Nithi was like, you literally appointed me on the committees. I remember that. But also, wouldn't you just be like you had the highest level of truancy ever seen when you were at? Well, they did. They brought that out. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, she should never bring up someone missing votes. It's crazy. Well, you had to Ghana a bunch. No, I didn't. Oh. Um, so. this is a i mean this is her trajectory from being a woman who visited fucking fidel castro's cuba to eight times to in the 70s to fucking work like do the the the work the bidding of the castro like she's literally out in the fields and building houses and fucking shit and to build
Starting point is 01:19:35 like a multi-racial working class movement from the ground up in l a but as she's shown the only direction she's gone since then is to the right. She's going to go more to the right now because Nithi entered the... So dumb. So she will... Well, there's no one to get there for her. I mean, maybe the right... Enjoy. Maybe the right wing will vote for her, but we all know what's going to happen. The right wing's not going to vote. Well, it shows... It just... Oh, go ahead. Yeah. There are nothing else to say. Well, it just shows what happens when you fully betray your own
Starting point is 01:20:06 principles and then you're floating in the ocean with absolutely nothing to hang on to. Yeah. And your only choice is to just try to... you know, go for the more evil because the evil has money. And, you know, it's like it, it's, it's amazing to watch the way, because there's definitely stuff that Zoron has done that I don't like. Yeah. Yeah. But for the most part, he's the most popular democratic politician in the country.
Starting point is 01:20:41 Yes. And the reason why is because. The bar is so low. So low. And the solving part is so easy. Yeah. And he's just pretty much slow playing a lot of the things he was talking about and doing them. And he's a very effective communicator.
Starting point is 01:20:59 Yeah. And we're so used to seeing people get in and not do the things that they talk about. And be bad communicators. And be bad communicators that when they actually do, it does show you how easy. I mean, you could beat this. It's like watching a football game where both. both teams agree to not throw. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:21:16 And it's like someone comes in and starts throwing and you're like, whoa, what the fuck? It's like, it's very straightforward and easy to to actually follow through on the things that you're saying. But in such a short time, because the truth is I didn't not, I've always viewed Karen Bass as just a like, ineffective Democrat. And I mean, you know, I'd to hear that. No, she's genuinely evil. That's really fucked up. It's so fucked up. It's so bad.
Starting point is 01:21:46 But that, but you know, she's a boomer and they, they are the people who, who, that old saying of like, oh, way do you get older? Yeah, that's boomers. Like other people get older and they don't fucking turn. Everyone kind of stays what they were. Well, it's also like, you know, face the fucking music. If you become a, I mean, obviously you're asking a piece of shit to admit that they're a piece of shit. But this endless denial of reality. That Trump has embodied on a level that I don't know if it's possible to see it like this again because it's kind of this.
Starting point is 01:22:22 It's actually like the worst. He's like the worst liar. But I don't know. They, they, there is something that is so that just makes you, the Democrats who do this, which is most of them just make you so much more angry because it's betrayal. It's such a betrayal for the, you are the alternative to the fascists. They're betraying the working class. And also like the DSA, it's very interesting because a lot of DSA people are arguing with each other right now over Nithia because she's not anti-Israel enough, which is a valid argument. But like, there are times when you go, this might not be the one.
Starting point is 01:23:14 Like if you're DSA, I don't know what you are because you're either working within the electoral system or you're not. And you're an organization set up to work within an electoral system, not fight against it. You're literally putting people in places of power and working the electoral system. Then I don't know what you're doing because they're mad. There's a bunch of people that are mad that she was endorsed because she hasn't been fervently anti-Israel. but she's definitely been somewhat anti-Israel, but at the same time, not. Like, she's definitely walking the fence on Israel.
Starting point is 01:23:49 So that's not great. But at the same time, like, we in L.A. literally can't afford another four years of Karen Bass. The city will be done. So I don't know what, I don't know what you want out of that. As a DSA member,
Starting point is 01:24:07 he does want Nithia to win or she should be endorsed. What you want is you want her to win. and then to just be so good that she can actually express all the anti-Israel shit. But I'm not saying. But if you look at Zoron, like, again, I'm not saying, but I mean, he was like, if Netanyahu flies here, we're going to arrest him. But then he didn't. Yeah, then he didn't.
Starting point is 01:24:27 But it was like, before the election, he was like, he was saying. Well, that's the thing to me about the old Nithia stuff. Is there like, why she has to come out and say this stuff. I'm like, yeah, the other guy just did that and it didn't happen. Like at some point you have to like accept like we live in a fucking shitty terrible system. And they're going to lie to you about leftist stuff and get your vote and then not fucking do it. Like get over it. It's the country needs to be blown up and then tell it is like, yeah, this is my fucking, it's fucking bullshit.
Starting point is 01:24:57 So what you're saying that basically like, you know, as this is all going to fall apart. So get what you can. No, I'm saying, I'm saying don't like at some point you have to look at. I totally agree with like if you didn't want to vote for Kamala because of genocide, great. That's fine. We're talking about L.A. We're talking about, you know, it's not the same animal. It's not the same thing.
Starting point is 01:25:25 And in L.A. we need the homeless people off the street. And we need fires not to destroy our fire. Like we're at a like just basic survival level. And I understand that's also going on in. Gaza, that's a fucking hellscape. But we're also dying out here and people are dying on the streets all the fucking time. Like, we do need to just fix those things before we can even begin to challenge on a level
Starting point is 01:25:56 of like, let's take on Israel. We're so fucked that we just need to like stop the bleeding before we can get out and fight to battle. So I think like- Put on your own oxygen mask before you throw it on the kid. But so there is a local thing of like. like we're in really bad fucking shape. And I don't know if the rest of the country realizes that.
Starting point is 01:26:15 But like she's ruined. Like the right wing is right. She is fucking obliterated this city. And so it does need to be fixed. I mean, I can see why people like, no, you got to be. To get an endorsement from DSA, you have to be anti-industrial. Okay, that's fine. But like you're spending way too much time on it when you should be actually
Starting point is 01:26:36 lobbing just as many bombs at the fucking city council members who endorse bass. Like, fuck you. Like, that shit to me is fucking crazy. And then also just like, why aren't you lobbing bombs of bass also? So it's like, but I'm also, I'm the same thing on some levels. Like I lob a lot of, I love a lot more at Democrats because they're supposed to be better. So I don't know. It's a very complicated issue.
Starting point is 01:27:02 But I really think. Well, they also fool those who are closer to us. Yeah. But I really think in this, this is one of those elections, like, we just need to stop the fucking bleeding. I can't live I can't live saying all these homeless people in the streets
Starting point is 01:27:13 I can't fucking live that way it's fucking terrible and she fucked it all up and she gave all the money to cops that's it just on a basic level like this is not a normal election this is genuinely like
Starting point is 01:27:25 four more years of this woman and we're that city it's fucking done it literally won it'll go bankrupt she's that fucking bad so yeah that's what has to happen
Starting point is 01:27:38 Hmm.
