Starting point is 00:00:00 Hey, Dr. Josh Axe here. So on today's video, I'm going to be sharing with you what your bad habits are costing you. And I'm going to be breaking down a video posted by Pastor Robert Madoo about the little choices you make that determine the quality and direction of your life. Check this video out with me right now. Net fix does not cost you 1999. That box of crumpered cookies does not cost $22 and $34. Don't ask me how I know. It costs you your health.
Starting point is 00:00:27 One box at a time. social media accounts are not free. They cost to your focus. Every time you scroll instead of focusing on the thing that God created and ordained you to do, it is eating away your time. One decision is taking time away from you. Decisions are critical decisions determine. Hear me, the quality and the direction of your life.
Starting point is 00:00:51 This video is so good. You know, here's the question you'd ask yourself is, what is this habit costing you? I want to go over three of the things that he broke down here in terms of what we're talking about with time, health, and your focus. And the first one here with Tommy talks about Netflix. Did you know that the average U.S. adult watches five hours of TV a day? Think about that. Five hours of TV a day is the average U.S. adult watch time versus if you took those five hours and you cut it down to one hour a day and took those other four hours and spent that with your kids. Now, some of you are sitting here watching this, you may say, well, I don't watch maybe two hours of TV a day or three hours. I'm not one of those five-hour people. And I bet you're right because if you're watching this video on my channel, you're probably into personal growth and health and becoming the best you can be. But overall, it's so important to think about this. What if you would cut and save yourself one more hour? What if instead you spent that one hour playing with your kids or building a relationship or doing a date night with your
Starting point is 00:01:53 spouse or going back and learning something that can help you grow your skill or growing spiritually, reading a book about that or reading a leadership book, whatever it is. But what if you took just one single hour of TV time and started instead using that to grow yourself or serve humanity in some way? Can you grow in character? Can you grow in skill? So, so, but Netflix, again, we think that it may cost us, you know, a few dollars a month when it costs us actually so much more. And that's the thing I want you to grab a hold of here is and ask yourself this question, not what is it just costing you financially, but what is this thing you're doing actually costing you in the long run? You know, the next one here, he talked about that box of cookies.
Starting point is 00:02:39 It's costing you your health. The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of sugar per day. That's 130 pounds of sugar per year. And listen to this stat, Processed foods make up nearly 70% of the U.S. diet. And so most people are thinking that, oh, it's actually costing me less. If I'm buying processed food or fast food, hey, that's less money than maybe other things I'm spending. But the reality is it's not just costing you that dollar amount. It's actually costing you your physical health. You lose your physical health.
Starting point is 00:03:15 You may not be there. Like, I think about this for myself. I might not be there when my daughters get married or my granddaughters. I may not be able to be running around active. I may not be as good at my career. I may not be as good of a husband. So ask that question when you're eating the junk food, what is it actually costing you in your physical health,
Starting point is 00:03:35 your relationship, your mental capacity? It's probably costing you a whole lot more than you think. Now, here's the other big one that Pastor Robert Madoo focuses on, and it costs you your focus when we talk about social media time. Listen to these statistics. The average person is on social media, two hours and 27 minutes a day. And the majority of Gen Z spend at least four hours a day on social media. Four hours a day.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Now, you may be one of those two and a half hour people or only two hour people, but still, that's a lot of time on social media. Now, I think social media is different if you're watching an educational video on YouTube and you're learning and growing. I really think that's a different sort of video versus the just, doom scrolling over and over and over. I'll tell you a few things social media will tend to cost you. It'll cost you your emotional and mental health. Studies have shown the more time you spend on social media devices, the higher rates of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem because of self-comparison,
Starting point is 00:04:37 a worse night sleep because of all the blue light. And so you're not sleeping as well. That's going to cost you melatonin, which is going to cost your adrenal health, which is going to cause more long-term issues like heart disease, increased risk of cancer, and just aging more quickly. And so the reality is social media doesn't just cost you a little bit of time. It costs you a lot of time. It costs you your health. And think about also what could you replace that time with? Let's say still, listen, I think it's fine for you to spend an hour a day on social media or even a couple hours if you're learning and growing with what you're consuming. But if you're simply scrolling as many people are for four hours a day. Think about if you just took one of those hours and you devoted that to focus
Starting point is 00:05:21 on growing your character or your skill or something that contributes to the lives of others, you got to think about the actual cost. So here's what I want to share with you, this principle and it's been so impactful for me is pick your sacrifice. You know, right now I sacrifice my mornings in a way to exercise. I exercise now so I can be healthier later on in life. I sacrifice the enjoyment of eating, you know, a sugary laden cereal with skim milk for breakfast, where I would probably do whole milk. But I skip that. Instead, I do a collagen, berry, protein smoothie high in antioxidants, and where a smoothie still tastes good, this tastes better. But everything is a sacrifice. either going to have the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. You pick. Which one? Would you rather
Starting point is 00:06:18 have the pain of discipline or the pain of regret? I can tell you the pain of regret is much, much worse. You want to pay now and play later. And think about your sacrifice and the cost of your time, the cost of your health, the cost of your focus. And think about right now, what are some of those things you can replace with? So here's what I want to hear from you. in the comment section below. What can you replace TV with? How much TV are you watching now? And then what are you going to replace even 15 to 30 minutes of TV time with?
Starting point is 00:06:52 Let me know what are some of those foods you know you need to stop eating? And what are some things you can replace it with that are healthy instead? What are some of those things that are stealing your focus social media-wise? And what can you replace it with? Listen, it's not that you're doing nothing. It's you're replacing it with someone good rather than doing this. a cereal, start doing a superfood smoothie. Rather than spending all that time on Netflix, spend time reading a personal growth book. Rather than focusing on, you know, accounts that are
Starting point is 00:07:20 negative, hey, watch a YouTube video that's more positive in nature that helps you grow. Pick your sacrifice. Choose wisely right now. Again, I want to hear from you in the comment section below what you thought about this video and what you're going to replace some of these negative habits with instead replacing with positive habits. I can't, Wait to hear what you think
