Starting point is 00:00:00 Hello, I'm professional broadcaster Dan McDowell, letting you know that you were about to hear one of our free podcast. But if you'd like to subscribe at dumzone.com, you'll get four shows per week plus the weekend wrap-up and any bonus sods like our business Wednesday interviews. So if you forgot how to use the 15-second rewind, that's dumbzone.com to subscribe. Now, on to today's program. The ticesteroon how to this. Saucerone, cessorone, whatever the fuck it is. Cicesteroleone? What is it, Jake?
Starting point is 00:00:44 I think it's testosterone. Tastroin. The T and T-R-T, which they can help you with, a game day men's health, among a multitude of other things that can help you with there. They offer peptides. They offer wellness. And that's important because August is National Wellness Month, Dan.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Did you see that? the peptide of the month now? I did. They had a peptide of the month. It's like the bud of the month club. It basically is. Or whatever. It's a centerfold.
Starting point is 00:01:11 It's a surmoreland. It's growth hormone. It's putting on weight. It stimulates the body's pituitary gland to produce more of its own growth hormone. Just stimulates. Come on. Let's go. Get it going.
Starting point is 00:01:25 And then it does. 12 locations in DFW, Gameday. Dot dumbzone.com. There's one near you. Go get your levels checked. Lots of different options on the peptides. They have one that will just make you more tan. Football season's approaching.
Starting point is 00:01:39 They might have one that will make you hit your picks. Go to gameday.dumzone.com. Hello, friends. It's early. We generally don't do live to tape this early. It's a 10 a.m. start for the old Dumb Zone. I'm Dan McDowell. I'm Jake K.
Starting point is 00:02:26 I'm Blake Jones. We have Foodie K. Out here as well, out here today is not the Game Day Men's Health Studio. That is in the Fox 4 building downtown Dallas. Out here is the Lowe's Hotel across from the Rangers Ballpark. Now you might say there are two Lowe's hotels across the Rangers ballpark. And we would say, yeah, sorry. They should take...
Starting point is 00:02:59 But year three, I've got in, I went to the right one. They should take a cue from one of our nation's more successful brands and call one of them Lowe's 2. Lowe's Plus. Lowe's Plus. Lowe's Max. A lot of options. Anyway, this is one called Lowe's Arlington. And to prove that you can get here, if you try hard enough, we have two real live Texas Ranger media personalities sitting here.
Starting point is 00:03:33 We have Jared Sandler, who has worn the Dumb Zone headset many times before. And we have his chief rival, Mike Bassick, who you may know from being Mike Bassett. Do you need me to get anything for you, launch? Not many people know that, but Mike Bassett was an intern for the ticket. Oh, I didn't see Dave Raymond walk in. I thought there was another bid. I guess the guy rolls in whenever he feels like it. Open that he was waiting to play.
Starting point is 00:04:06 I didn't want to mess your biddle. That was awesome. The other guys were here on time. Right. I thought it was like he was going to go bigger, right? Like there's something bigger. He's not just a Texas Rangers media member. I got a whole thing for Dave.
Starting point is 00:04:20 On time, did I miss something? I got the whole peptides business. Okay. I saw you were moved. My bad. But yeah, Mike Bassick was once our intern for my run. for my radio show back when I did radio
Starting point is 00:04:35 guys remember radio yeah a lot of connections here TC was an intern at the same time Blake's a producer I saw Blake and Bassett kind of had a little connection I feel like I was with TC and Jake kind of interning around the same time
Starting point is 00:04:51 maybe I'd already I don't know I can't remember this is this is crap I was an intern and got arrested and I didn't get my name on that 25-year wall at the ticket stock years ago I spent 15 hours in jail that's true and and I don't even get mentioned right now like what the fuck's going on it's true you don't get mentioned as an I was your intern at training camp for two summer like I was the station intern really yeah I don't remember that it's because you're African-American yeah we don't respect the African-Americans as much here
Starting point is 00:05:30 Yeah, anyway. Hey, so this is sort of live to tape, right? Yeah, we are doing internet radio. You want to kind of re-rack it and see if you can get it right? No. No, I think we're good with the first take. We're good with the first take. I will say, I thought you were about to say two Rangers media personalities and then Jared.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I thought you were about to punch down really hard on me. Well, I guess, look. But I like it. pull the curtain back and say that Dave Raymond texted Blake like 10 minutes ago like, yeah, I'll do the show too. We love it. Last night, Blake's like Dave Raymond ghosted me. That's pretty early
Starting point is 00:06:10 for Dave. He's dead to me, he said. Which I understand, and I appreciate that. Yeah. And it is terrible. I got them all three here. Yeah. That's what we deal with on the road though with Dave. What's that? Like he'll occasionally show up. Zero planning and then five minutes still like something's
Starting point is 00:06:26 like, I'm in or I'm out or I respect that. I was going to say. I was going to You say, you can't, there's no possible way you can bitch about this. Because Jake's been asking me, do you want to go to this Dodger game this week? We're going to L.A. Yeah. We have a connection with the Brewers. Do you want to go to the Dodgers game?
Starting point is 00:06:40 Do you want to go to a comedy show? Hey, I want to take the groundlings. I know you're a, uh, yeah. So I said, give me a ticket. They probably don't care. They're free. And then maybe I'll be there. Right.
Starting point is 00:06:50 Yeah. Because you don't know. RSVP might pop up. Yeah. Yeah, I know. I know. It's maddening, but I know. So not, not a surprise to you guys, I'm sure.
Starting point is 00:06:59 but on the road, I'll text like three days in advance, like trying to plan out, like lunch on this day, lunch on that day. Mike, hey, you pick lunch. Jared is a text or two. Dave. He's an organized. He'll voice text, though, and I do appreciate it. Do you do that to you?
Starting point is 00:07:13 You're going to be in my game? Yeah, pick a little. I got to get it right. Yeah, I'm waiting for an answer for you too. Me too. Does he take? In fact, I'm going to rescind that now. I don't want it in the league.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Okay, sounds good. Wow. Dingens are high. Dave will text like five minutes before. He's like, yeah, let's go to lunch. I'm hungry. Whatever. Like, Mike, I find the shower and, yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Well, I don't know what to say. I have no excuse. I'm a jackass. I don't know. Yeah, yeah, no. But I'm right there with you. He's the talent. That's the two of these guys.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Yeah. The world will bend to their will. So, yeah, Mike, you're the only guy who has not been on our program yet. That's our fault. We talk about you a lot. Jake, Jake didn't know how great you were and knowledgeable about baseball. So he's finally catching up, Jake. The year of Mike Bassick as far as Jake.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Because Jake was watching a lot of baseball games before we couldn't figure out how to get him on the TV. Yeah. It probably started last year when Luca got traded. That's when I started watching the Rangers a lot more. I was like, God damn, these guys are great. Like, I love it. I don't know. Here's why you're great.
Starting point is 00:08:24 I have heard you say compliment me and thank you so much. Sure. Because other people don't. The problem, this is going to be backhanded, though. Because people will, when they compliment basketball, they'll be like, I feel like he's talking down to me. And I'm like, yeah, I like that. That's a good bid.
Starting point is 00:08:40 That means you're an idiot. Like, I'm guilty here, right? I feel like he talks down to me all the time. But I just think you teach, I learn about the game. Well, thank you. Probably also something of like the type of guys who end up being coaches. Right? Or dude, I had to figure it out on more than just being able to...
Starting point is 00:09:01 Yeah. I learn a lot about pop culture when I talk. I hear Bassick talk. Yeah, he's... What decade is his expertise? Who knows? You know where to start? That's the thing about Mike Basick is...
Starting point is 00:09:11 You never know where he's most plugged in when it comes to culture. I don't feel like you ever watch anything or do anything that's not sports-related. Like, you are just so into sports. Pretty much. You just don't... I just feel like you... If you want to talk movies, you want to talk... great TV shows.
Starting point is 00:09:28 So I'll tell you what I'm doing right now that is not sports related. I am rewatching the wire with my wife that we haven't watched in probably, I'm going to guess, 20 years. Yeah. Because it's a little bit new to me. I have like a little bit of an idea of what's going to happen next, but I was like, oh, I totally forgot about this part of it.
Starting point is 00:09:46 Yeah. But yesterday, Dave on the broadcast said, do I remember Rodney McCray? And I'm like, oh, yeah, Houston Rocket, Dallas Maverick. Yeah. And he's like, no. Yeah. Nice butt. like really big butt.
Starting point is 00:09:58 Like him and Mark Aguire have similar butts. Yeah. Right? Not the Rodney McCray I was asking about, incidentally. Like somebody else is running a Mr. Skin website with like celebrity nips, slips, and bass it's got the hottest sports butts.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Catalog. So we're two days away from the, well, I should just say what we're doing today first. Today, it's Jake is throwing out the first pitch, which we're really impressed with when we first. learn that but then we've come to learn sometimes there are multiple first pitches yeah they have like divisions they have an adaptive first pitch they have uh senior citizen first pitch okay i didn't know that i didn't need how common this has been just flighted yeah but it's still a pretty big deal
Starting point is 00:10:42 it's a big deal to me on the on the field and and jake i don't know if you guys know this but jake like as of a year ago couldn't throw a ball really yeah pretty much pretty much pie thrower okay Like he started taking throwing lessons at the age of like 39. Pretty much. Just to learn how to throw straight. Yeah. My buddy runs the TPA over in South Lake. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:07 And so I would ask him, he's not like a coach, but he's a young guy. He can get access to the place. And I would ask him, when are there going to be no teens here? So I would sneak in there like before they opened. And they have a mound and we just worked through it. And how do you feel? Are you confident? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:24 I went to Wire Will's house last night off and threw off the mound to just I've You went to practice throwing last night. That's, I just, I come from the bad radio way of doing things. Look, it's the Nick Saban. We can only control what we can control here. I've done everything. Don't wear your arm out. Where your arm out.
Starting point is 00:11:44 Yeah, I'll go mound. I wonder if rags or Travis Jankowski will catch him. It's weird. It took a long time for, and I don't really, Dan hates hearing about this because he He was born with a baseball and he could throw it. Like every other man. I don't think Dan is singular in that. But the thing that really got me messed up was Blake's nephew plays coach pitch and none of the dads on the team couldn't pitch.
Starting point is 00:12:10 So they had to call Blake in to do this. And when we told that story, I got a bunch of response from people that are like, this is happening. Nobody can throw anymore. And I'm like, fuck that. We're bucking the trend here. And I, you know, I feel okay about it. I don't feel embarrassed about it. I could go do it if my kid's team needed me to.
Starting point is 00:12:31 What do you feel like you've learned the most in your list? Honestly, I feel like I could teach somebody how to do it now. The first person who ever used the term pie throwing to me was Kyle Gibson. We had Kyle Gibson on one time, and I was like, they call me a pie throw, and he was like, okay, well, there's a drill you need to do where you get on one knee and, like, scrape the ball back. So I would just get on the ground. And, like, the main thing is when I would bring my hand back, I would never flip the ball back. So already from jump, if the ball's facing forward, like, it doesn't really
Starting point is 00:12:59 matter what you're getting on it. And then the other thing, because I knew you were going to be here, I bought, I swear to God, you've seen a million like baseball, trinkets and shit late night. This legitimately helped me. Okay. What do you do? So this is, it's called a rev throw. And it's like you're basically trying to get like a revolution on it, like you're swinging it. And then it goes over your head and you whip it. Like you're trying to get. get that, right? Like you're back and around, and it worked. This thing worked.
Starting point is 00:13:31 And now I'm like, I don't know, I can, I'll probably be dirty today. But like if I need to throw the ball now, I no longer, when I got to Dan's house yesterday, there was one final thing that was more important to me than the first pitch today. I pulled up and Dan was out walking his dogs before the show. And I was like, hey, get a ball, get a glove. And I just made Dan catch two pitches for me. And I was like, how gated that look? And he's like, it was fine.
Starting point is 00:14:02 And I was like, fucking, it was like my dad telling me he was proud of me. And now that's it. That's all I needed right there. Dan, did you play high school baseball? No. Okay. He could have. Like, he...
Starting point is 00:14:16 But he played in men's leagues. So there's some experience there. Where do you best at, Dan? At what? What do you mean? In baseball, what would you say your strength is in baseball? Probably commenting on baseball. He can swing it.
Starting point is 00:14:32 I've seen Dan hit. Oh, that's right. That's where I met you. I always said he had the physical tools, but there were questions about whether he was mentally fit to manage a team. It was my attitude. Makeup is a little short, probably. The general manager.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Maybe at the lower levels. A little attitude problem. Anyway. That's how we got here. Yeah, so yeah, Jake's throwing out the first pitch. And the last thing is, we always do a dumb zone day at the ballpark. And freaking Frisco, I did not ask for... Yeah, originally he was scheduled to throw out a first pitch in Frisco.
Starting point is 00:15:04 And since that went awry, somehow our Rangers contact is like, hey, I can get you on the ball at the bumper? Because it's not like, I don't know, I'm sure you guys get asked. I get asked a bunch, like, hey, can I throw out the first pitch? What? Who is asking you that? They should take away your right to vote. I've had a lot of people ask.
Starting point is 00:15:21 Can I throw out the first pitch? My son's a big fan. Can he throw out the first pitch? And like, I don't, I just tell them no because. What does he have? But like, I remember one year I asked like if we can make that an auction item for Sandlot. And I was told no, which like I get because it used to be where you had one first pitch a game. And that probably went to someone who paid a lot of money or sponsor.
Starting point is 00:15:47 But now you're right. I mean, there are, it's like the first pitch and then the pre first pitch. and then the other first pitch. So which one are you in order? I have no idea. Because the last one is the one that like, like when a celeb comes out, like he's doing the last one. Yeah, like Caleb Downs like a month ago throughout the first pitch
Starting point is 00:16:06 about five minutes before the game. I heard him talking about it with his brother. His brother was making fun of it. Oh, yeah. What if they bring out somebody from like the fan after you? Would you feel emasculating? You know him from the host, the segment, just the tip. Or just a sip or whatever.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Your former intern. Is there a guy there that was an intern for you? Yeah. I think you're going to be the last one. Yeah, I think so too. Like ever? I'll be right by you. I'll do whatever they ask.
Starting point is 00:16:32 It'll be so bad. It'll be ever. I'll stick around out there if they're not feeling great about Bradford. I was excited to catch Karan Butler's first pitch when I was on the Washington Nationals. He was on the Wizards. He was on the Wizards. He maybe threw it 33 feet in the air. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And then it rolled to me at about 13 miles an hour. Yeah, no, Dave correctly pointed out the arm-length element of that problem. I will take that ball a step further and say, clearly there's a socioeconomic issue at play there as well. NBA players are set up to fail there. Everyone's just waiting, waiting for the – they know. Everyone knows you've never thrown a baseball. Cam Ward.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Which is amazing because they do throw a baseball pass in basketball. Yeah, I guess – Now, you do pie throw a baseball – Why do they call that a baseball? That's not a football pass? It should be called that. No, because if you're on the side of the ball like football, then it's going to hook out of bound.
Starting point is 00:17:27 Like we were always, my high school basketball coach is very big on this. If you try throw it like a football, it's going to be a shitty pass. So it's called a baseball pass. Can you guys stay behind the ball? Well, but it's that you do that pass in the game of football. You don't actually, there is no baseball play where they're like, hey, go long, and I'll throw you a baseball pass, right? There are times you throw the ball, though, right?
Starting point is 00:17:51 I guess the only time I guess you'd say is a first, A first baseman leading the pitcher. The beginning looks better now, doesn't it, Dave? The beginning of the show in retrospect. That was actually the peak. He's sending emails over here. I got an email. I got to find out when he's going to throw.
Starting point is 00:18:07 He can send an email and get in contact with community mechanical. What do you know about that, Dan? I know that there are HVAC company. and lots of people email us about them. Like Rich, who last week sent us an email that said, I want to shout out Community Mechanical. My daughter's air conditioner stopped cooling the house. They called some guy that works HVAC on the side of the neighborhood,
Starting point is 00:18:34 gave him a quote that was $1,500. I said, hey, call Community Mechanical. They came out the next morning. They discovered the unit parts were still covered by warranty. They ordered the part. So for like $100, they ended up fixing it. So thanks, community mechanical. They take care of the families of the dumb zone, as well as the dumb zone listener.
Starting point is 00:18:55 Mention that you're a dumb zone listener, and they'll treat you right. What's the contact info? What's the CTA? CommunityDFW.com. Be like Brandon Aubrey and other dumb zone listeners. Call her text 469-667-7290. Communitydifw.com. So when do you guys have to leave to get over there?
Starting point is 00:19:18 We have a 135 start today, right? We are three hours and 20 minutes from first pitch. When I say first pitch. Not Jake's. Oh, okay. Actually, let me double check something on that. I just sent a little. I think 124 is the last pitch.
Starting point is 00:19:36 I just don't know, you know. The last pitch of the first pitch. Correct. Yeah. Okay. Mike Bassick, so two years ago, Excuse me, two days from now. Oh.
Starting point is 00:19:48 I think is the 19th anniversary of giving up the home run to Barry Bonds that would break Babe, excuse me, Hank Aaron's record. Yeah. Dave talked about it last night. He asked me if it was a change up at 84 miles an hour. I was like, screw you, man. Don't you hate when. That's what I threw.
Starting point is 00:20:06 I'm sorry. Guys that could never dream of throwing 84 are like, what'd you top out at 84? Like that's like you're some kind of pussy. This is how Ryan Clark lost his job. I'd be like, boy, 84, that sounds pretty good. Oh, Jared, you got to roll? Thanks for your time. I had to do a jock thing with the bat.
Starting point is 00:20:26 Oh, cool. Can you explain that a little more? Not jock itch. No, explain that. Jack Peterson's a big bat guy. Like, he's very particular. He's got a high level of fluency with the various characteristics of a bat and maybe other than the glove it's the most important piece of
Starting point is 00:20:47 equipment and we've never in a year and a half on rsn ever talked to a player in-depth about the various differences of a bat and jock's been good jock doesn't do a whole lot of media related things so we've gotten jock to agree to but he's real hardcore about the bat he's like he collects bats so he's got over he's got a in his home he's got like over 500 bats like on a wall You know, some people trade jerseys, he'll get other people's bats. But just in general, he's very, like, he can really break down the nuances of a bat. Remember when everybody laughed? That's interesting.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Like so blind test, you could just tell? Okay, all right. Sorry. Well, everybody laughed because. Jared Sandler, everybody. When the Rangers. RFK was like, you know, everyone's autistic. They're not playing baseball anymore.
Starting point is 00:21:36 It's like, no, they definitely are. Yeah. This guy's got 500 baseball. The Stars had a dude like that on one of our trips. Speza? That's what I was looking for. He was obsessed. He would sit there and just like in between periods before the game,
Starting point is 00:21:53 crazy, crazy with it. Before we even get back to Barry Bond, I want to get back to you had said you were excited. This is who Mike Bassick is. So I met him when he was pitching for the Mets, right? Yep. And we'd go in the clubhouse and just do wacky quizzes with people. and it was the first time ever I had a player come up to me and start just talking to me.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Like, hey, man, you work for the ticket. Oh, my gosh. And then he wanted to talk about the Mavs mostly. Yep. And this is the early 2000s, I guess. 2003. Okay. So it's probably like they're playing, they're into playoffs against Sacramento or something.
Starting point is 00:22:30 Well, I think it's summertime. And I think we're talking about possibly, this is weird how I can remember these conversations, but a whole bunch of other things I can is I think we're talking about maybe Germain O'Neill was going to be a free agent. And I was kind of like talking about Germain O'Neill. Always looking for that big man. The Mazzar forever searching for a center. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:51 And he had a lady with you too, but I forget who is with you. Yeah, Martine, I believe. Oh, man. We were doing quizzes with Martin. V.J. But, I mean, you mentioned that. So we talk about how you're so into sports. You're so into the Mavs.
Starting point is 00:23:06 You're excited to catch Karan Butler. Yeah. Like who would ever say that phrase? That was before he was a Maverick, too. Dude, what do we're... Yeah. It's Karan Butler. I know, but from what I remember,
Starting point is 00:23:18 the Mavs were once in the playoffs, you were pitching for the Nationals, maybe, and you had to tell your manager, maybe don't pitch me tonight because, is that true? Somewhat, yeah. So it's 2006. Mavericks are playing the Spurs in the semifinals. and it's going to be game seven.
Starting point is 00:23:42 And I'm in Tucson, AAA. And he can tell already by the second round, I'm really into this NBA playoff thing in the Dallas Mavericks. And we're flying into Tucson, which are, no, we're flying into Albuquerque. And which are really fun trips because you go from Tucson to Phoenix to, you know, and you're waking up at three in the morning. Like people don't realize, like, you have to learn how to love baseball if you really want to make it to the major leagues as kind of just a half.
Starting point is 00:24:08 half-ass prospect. And Chip Hale, who's our manager, who's the head coach at Arizona now, he says, Mike, I can't promise you this, but I'm going to try not to pitch you tonight because I can tell that you are not going to be focused at all on our game. Okay, you didn't go to him. All right. But he had a good. He had a good idea at that point.
Starting point is 00:24:32 His face was painted. Which I do remember. That was the game where the Mavs get up. by a lot, Spurs then take the lead, Dirk makes the shot, Bruce Bowen fouls him, ties it up, go to overtime, Mavericks kill him in overtime. It's about the seventh inning. I've probably been out in the bullpen, which is in left field, and our dugout was on the first base side. I'd probably been in the bullpen for one of the seven innings. And then after the seventh inning was over, I sprint out to left field with number one raised up.
Starting point is 00:25:08 the whole way for about 350 feet running to the bullpen. And the whole bullpen's dying laughing because they realize that the Dallas Mavericks have just beaten the spurs and are going to the conference finals. Hell yeah. So that's that story. That's your sports nerddom.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Okay. Then the next year, you're up with the Nationals. Yeah. It's 2007. Yeah. I kind of feel like on August 6th, you and I were talking. I think I did come on y'all show, right?
Starting point is 00:25:40 I don't know if you were you on the show that day? I think so. I think so. We were in San Antonio training camp back then. Yeah. And I remember talking to you about are you going to serve one up? Yeah. And I sarcastically was like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:55 Which then, you know, somebody, well, he must have intentionally done it. I live in Dallas Fort Worth and I heard him on the radio station saying he was going to do it. Or you could say it's Mike Bassick with a four or five ERA. Thank you. Barry Bonds, who is hitting 70 home runs a year and or just walking 200, right? I like telling people, I gave up a home run to David Eckstein. Do you think it was difficult for me to give up home runs?
Starting point is 00:26:21 Like you were, was there anything in your mind when throwing the pitch? Like, I actually, I'm just going to put one down the middle. No. You were actually trying to get him out. For sure. Okay. That was my second to last start in the major leagues. I started the next time in Arizona,
Starting point is 00:26:39 arm was bugging me. You want to talk about being scared to death. I look up at the radar gun because I knew my shoulder was hurting. And I saw the first pitch of the game, fastball. Because I was like, I don't even know how hard I'm throwing, but it doesn't feel good. 81. Next pitch, fastball, 79.
Starting point is 00:27:00 And I'm like, well, I got to figure out how to pitch at 80 miles an hour. Do I know how to throw a knuckler? Like, are you thinking that? I was just going. Has there been a left-handed knuckleball pitcher? Oh, that would be a Dave Raymond question. That's a good question. Okay.
Starting point is 00:27:13 Because that's a thing some guys do later in their career. Yeah. Yeah. But, I mean, that was one of those moments where you're just like, yeah, I'm in big trouble here with my arm. And so that was my – so I say that to say, people that would say, well, he intentionally gave it up. Well, it kind of, in a way, ended my career. So, no. And it's not like it's cool, but it's not like he's riding that to fame.
Starting point is 00:27:45 And I'm Dave Raymond and I'm here with a man who you all know. It's taught in schools everywhere, gave up the home. It's kind of like that happened. Well, you did wonder at that time, would that be the label of you for the rest of your life? Yeah, I've done a lot of worse things, so. Oh, yeah, I guess we didn't even talk about Twitter. I thought that was not a reciprocal punishment. Really only having, like, room for one thing.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Yeah. You know. People that know me and love me. Definitely know me for a lot more things than the public knows me for. Yeah. Well, you look great. We know you as, yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:23 We know you as the guy who kind of demanded, he's like, I want to be a real intern. I want to go to Chipotle and get you guys lunch. And we're like, ah, all right. and then we would Yeah Give you our lunch order And my Do that
Starting point is 00:28:38 I would Head out to do that Yeah And then I would look up audio For good audio for Friday That's what it's all about That was the call of the week
Starting point is 00:28:49 Sorry I'm sorry Oh the Homer call The week yeah We would make you do that Gribble Tried to get me to do other things And I was like I'm not doing that
Starting point is 00:29:00 I'll listen to that one Not that one So There's no getting getting Mike to do anything. It was kind of getting to learn the board and other things like that. And I'm like, no. And it was really, honestly, one of the smartest decisions I ever made.
Starting point is 00:29:12 To not learn how to do that stuff? Yep. Why? Because they would have made you do it? Because, yep. Because then they would be like, hey, you can do this. And because I never learned it, they could never, they could never, you know, pay me $10 an hour to hit buttons. It's so true.
Starting point is 00:29:27 We do have a couple of accents. Interns here who would pick and choose what they felt like doing more, though. TC. TC might have done that occasionally. Not really with us, but later in his life. 120, by the way. You're throwing it 120. Okay.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Exactly 120. So they wouldn't reveal whether or not you were the... Thank you, Dave, for him. The lead guy. I saw the guy from Hurtado Barbecue, the fantastic Hurtado barbecue, was up there last night, and he got on the mound, but not all the way on the rubber. No point.
Starting point is 00:29:59 I found that to be a confusing... Yeah. Get all the way up there. Get all the way up there. That's what I was telling you. He was like half, like if you're just going to get on the dirt. Oh, you're saying no points in the middle. Yeah, it was weird.
Starting point is 00:30:08 You got to get up there. You got to kind of dig in a little bit. Right. Yes. Has Dan ever thrown out a first pitch? At a rough rider's game. How about that? Many years.
Starting point is 00:30:20 Well, there was no worry that I couldn't throw the ball over the plate. It's me. Dude, you say that? It's me. I forgot I was going to tell you guys this. Me, any human. Our good friend. Any man.
Starting point is 00:30:30 I didn't go study. Like I didn't throw the night before. Our, uh, it's weird, but I guess it's, he's going with it. Our, uh, our good friend Michael Snap, who's a baseball coach. Uh-huh. Texted me this morning and said, hey, good luck. I only got to do it once and I dirted it. I still have nightmares about it all the time.
Starting point is 00:30:51 Oh, that's not a good, uh, confidence builder. But you're not going to, you're, that's not going to bug you. If you dirt it? Yeah, it really, the truth is. and I think you know this. Good for the show, yeah. What's your target? Probably just about, I don't know, like right on the inside corner to a right-handed hitter, upper.
Starting point is 00:31:11 No, I don't. Are you going to be in your head? That's the thing. And no more than normal, dude. When you get your target, throw it at the, you know, it's going to be the first base coach or, yeah, third base coach. It's throw it at kind of their forehead. Yeah. Because then if you miss a little bit low, it should.
Starting point is 00:31:30 still get there. If you miss a little bit high, so what? The guy stands up and catches it. Right. You look good either way. If you go right over the plate, it might go about 450 feet. Hit the mascot. Number 756. So after Bonds hit the home run, his next time up, did you give him a little high heat, little kid music? He was taken out of the game. Oh. And then after I got two more outs, I was taken out of the game. And that was I pitched five innings there. Have you guys interacted since then? You and Barry Bonds?
Starting point is 00:32:06 Two days or three days after it happened. We go to Arizona and I guess his agent or PR people, like he's pretty big dude, they reached out to me and he talked on the phone to me for like an hour. And that's about it. For an hour? It was a long. What are you guys talking about? Oh, gosh.
Starting point is 00:32:28 just how much talking did you do on that hour three minutes wow um i guess i don't know anything about barry bonds did your dads know each other at all or they're they played i think they played against each other but not like they weren't on the rangers at the same time and i'd have you know i don't know baseball reference or those things could see if uh dave raymond has a question well you know the dad connection to this whole thing right no i mean i know mike bassett's dad but this is to me one of the craziest coincidences, right, that baseball does all the time. So he's pitching to Barry Bonds, bonds at 755, right? And then gives up the whole run.
Starting point is 00:33:08 His dad pitched to Henry Aaron sitting on 755. Really? I did not know that. Yeah, when Hank Aaron was with the Brewers, right at the end of his career, dad pitching for the Rangers. He could have been the one that gave up. Okay. Now, if he had, you're grooving the shit out of that.
Starting point is 00:33:25 You're like, all right, this is too. We've got to tie this together. I ended up accidentally grooving the S out of it. Yeah. I mean, man, isn't that crazy, though? Yeah. How in the hell does that happen? How does that happen?
Starting point is 00:33:38 All the pitchers, all the hitters. What? Crazy. What are we going to do? That's a gummy thought right there. Do you have an early bird spot? We do. That's a gummy thought brought just by Earlybird CBD.
Starting point is 00:33:50 Earlybird CBD.com is, so you take one or two of those. Now, it's 2.5. of real THC. So I don't know if that's your game, Mike Bassett. It's not my game. But let me translate for that, for those at home. Legal. Oh, yeah, it's very, very legal.
Starting point is 00:34:08 Well, the law is very, very much changed this week. Yeah, I haven't that. Early bird is good. It's good. They're fine. They're staying in business? Early bird, well, they're good to go. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:18 Business may be booming. I don't know about the business. I just know we're golden. If you want them to stay in business and keep giving you them 2.5 millies. maybe log on now. What's the promo code? Earlybirdcbd.com is the website. The promo code is DZ20.
Starting point is 00:34:35 That'll get you 20% off for free shipping. At early birdcbdcd.com promo code DZ20. And then yeah, what you want to do then is ponder. You take one of those and then you ponder Mike Bassick's dad pitching to Henry Aaron while he had 755 home runs. And you gave up 756? Yes. Okay, so he could have given up $7.56. Could have.
Starting point is 00:35:00 He's like, I'm not going to groove one. That's not in my nature. I like my prison. Not like these kids these days, and that's what ended up happening with this kid. Groved it, gone. By the way, can that THC stuff, could that help out Sandler on plane rides where he could calm down? I don't even know. Wow, is he all fidgety?
Starting point is 00:35:18 Dude? Oh, my gosh. Still? Do you ever get a text from him? Of course. Do you ever get 20 texts from him? Yeah. So that's what I was trying to say when he was here earlier,
Starting point is 00:35:28 is he has converted to the voice memo. Oh, yeah. So that at least doesn't take up as much room on my... No, that's an interesting... Because he has voice memoed me, and I wonder why didn't he just call and leave it on the... Right. Because his phone died while he was typing.
Starting point is 00:35:45 That's how long... Yeah, he'll write a long text. We'll get on the plane. You know, games over. Everybody goes through the nonsense. We're getting on the plane. We sit right across the aisle from Jared. We're putting our stuff in the overhead and getting ready to sit down.
Starting point is 00:36:00 And Jared has already, he's got his iPad hanging off the seat in front of him with, I don't know, some Netflix thing going. He's got his laptop up and he's just pounding away on an email furiously. Meanwhile, the phone's pinging like crazy and he's doing this business. And I mean, it's, we just, we haven't even sat down. And it's like that the whole time. And he'll look up in the middle of something. We don't know what the hell's going on. We just look up and look up and it's like,
Starting point is 00:36:33 oh. What? Nothing. Selfics. You know, oh, okay. Like, he might have a game going, a show going, a show going, he's a little ADD. Emails going.
Starting point is 00:36:46 The phone's pinging. Got the ear pods in. I don't know which device he's listening to. Right. He's running 10 picks, pools, and a charity. And no shit, though. He'll still ask you like three or four. Four questions.
Starting point is 00:36:57 Hey, what you know, Jack, do you see what bat he was using that third at bat? You're like, what? Did you pick out lunch for tomorrow? That's on you. Yeah, where are we going to lunch? Oh, yeah, and he's looking three days ahead. He's planning three days ahead. I love it.
Starting point is 00:37:10 That's my style. It's amazing. So how long did they tell us how long they had? I was just going to tell you, I got to go. Okay. Yeah, I got to go. I figured that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:37:20 I can stay. Yeah, I just work off of you. So whatever you say, I just follow. Okay. Yeah, well, if you guys need to leave. then I want to stay because I thought I was a special guy coming here today. Yeah, let's stay. And it's just me.
Starting point is 00:37:32 I like that. You want five minutes or so by yourself? Yeah, five minutes by yourself. We can talk about Dave Raymond. I just turned out. Ryan Dries was calling me about something, but we're good. Oh. What a name.
Starting point is 00:37:43 I remember him as a, he was a drop by the way. Yeah. He's dropped like 40 names. Yeah, I know. See you. I remember Ryan Dries as a test. case for the what was the Bill James thing
Starting point is 00:38:00 the predictor if you strike out 4.5 per 9 or less you're just not going to let's say succeed long term if you have a good year or a good part of the season then probably you'll regress
Starting point is 00:38:16 to the mean because you're just not getting enough swing and miss right and Ryan Dries fell way below that yet he had a great year and then I think Who was the GM back then? John Daniels, perhaps, traded him? No, well, I don't, I would say it was John Hart,
Starting point is 00:38:32 because I know that year it was 04, because obviously we're buddies. I can't remember what we, what happened in 05. I was gone by then. They're like, we're good, we had you for a year. We figured out what you have and go somewhere else. I don't know when it didn't go well for Dries here and then where he went after the Rangers,
Starting point is 00:38:54 but it was John Hart here. then Grady Fuson was underneath him. Whoa. And then what I remember about John Daniels is interesting because I'm in Oklahoma City most of that year. I'm with Texas for just a little bit is I just thought John Daniels who's about my age or younger than me. I just saw him as like a 20-something year old kind of intern.
Starting point is 00:39:14 I was like, oh, hey, how's it going? And he would be walking around with Fuson or Hart. But I didn't know that he was two to three years away from being a general manager for well over a decade of the Texas Rangers? I think nobody did. It was shocking to everybody when he got hired, right? Was he the youngest or second youngest in the game at that point? They deserve a lot of credit for that.
Starting point is 00:39:37 Brought a lot of good times. Well, it might have been lucked into it. I mean, Blake was hired, but then it wasn't for the, you know, he didn't end up being good for the reasons they thought. Yeah, but John Daniels, similarly, I think we were tired of spending a bunch of money and I just spent all this money on this huge name, GM, who had turned around the terrible Cleveland Indians franchise and all he did was golf when he was here.
Starting point is 00:40:03 Why don't I, this guy can be hired real cheap, I'll bet. That's what I thought, that's how I felt the John Daniels hire was at the time. Possibly, but in that framework, it's, I guess, impossible really to give them credit or anyone credit for anything ever, right? Because they picked him. They could have picked, like, an old cheap guy.
Starting point is 00:40:23 Right, right, right. That just seems like you think of the people who run the Rangers, and I don't think of them right now is particularly outside the box. And that really has never been the case. Same thing if Christian Parker works out. Same thing, right? Yeah. Like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:36 We don't. Did you ever think of getting in the coaching then? A little bit. I mean, there's a lot of depression when your career ends because talking to people, it's, hey, 99% of us, maybe even more than that. We don't choose when our career ends in all the sports. Like there's only a few, let's say, John Elway's or Barry Sanders, and John Elway's is the perfect example. Yeah, one back-to-back championships.
Starting point is 00:41:01 Whatever, I'm done. That was good. Great career. I'm one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. I'll stop doing it and not defend the back-to-back championships. I mean, even a guy like Peyton Manning, you know, it doesn't end the way that they want it to end. It's like dying. Yeah, how you're –
Starting point is 00:41:18 And so then you're like, well, who am I? Because, you know, unfortunately, a lot of times we define ourselves. by what we do, not who we are. And so then you're just looking at yourself on like, well, who am I if I'm not a baseball player? If I'm not a pro baseball player, which that was from 18 to 31 years old, that's what I did.
Starting point is 00:41:38 That's kind of in my mind. That's who I was. Well, if I'm not that anymore, who am I? Not an intern anymore. Yeah. And so it was tough. I mean, I went with Norm Hitchkis to spring training in 2009, if I have my years right.
Starting point is 00:41:53 And I'm seeing some of my former teammates and guys I played against like, what are you doing? And I'm like, no, I'm here at the Rangers, but I'm just like media. Did you feel emasculated? Yeah, I felt really crappy. To be honest, it was probably the worst spring training I've ever been to because. Was that your first year out of the game? Yeah. 2009?
Starting point is 00:42:12 Yeah. I always hoped you would, you could have turned into the crafty one batter lefty. Like there are guys that end up five or six years in that role. I just, I couldn't throw hard. Just keep money coming, you know. I tried throwing sidearm, you know, to try to kind of become more like kind of a lefty specialist. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:33 That's always easier said than done. Hey, change your arm angle and do it at a major league level where, hey, maybe you can do it if you want to go back to AA for $5,000 a month at 32 years old. And I was like, yeah, I had those offers. Your wife and kids. Yeah, two kids. I was like, yeah, this is just. not going well.
Starting point is 00:42:55 I'll go to radio. I remember an interesting thing you were talking to me about once off the air was just how you talk about, you know, listening to your coaches and whatnot. But if you were a guy who is kind of always on the bubble, right? And you never had that huge contract where they just said, you know, we're just going to roll through this guy no matter what happens. Yep. But it was you're in spring training and you were told,
Starting point is 00:43:22 like, hey, I need you to work, you got to work on this, whatever it was, curve or the slider or whatever. We just need you to work on this. We're not, results don't matter. We, you know, this is where we learn. This is where you, and you listened and you got pounded trying to develop something that results don't matter, and then you got sent down. Yep.
Starting point is 00:43:41 I learned my lesson there is that was 03 with the Mets. O2, I was pretty good. I had Bobby V as my manager who loved me, Charlie Huff, who was great at helping me out, get guys out. And then Art Howe, by the way, great guy comes in. But then I get this. Let's do this. Let's totally change where you throw on the mound.
Starting point is 00:44:01 I would throw on the first base side of the rubber. Let's throw on the third base side of the rubber. Let's do this. Let's do that. And it's kind of like we promise you had a great finish to last year. Don't worry about it. This is where we figure it out. And then I wasn't figuring it out.
Starting point is 00:44:18 It was not this simple change that. immediately led to good results. And then pitch opening day in relief. That goes horribly bad. Nine runs in two innings in relief. Oh, no. Then on the third day of the year, I come in relief, one, two, three inning. But at that point, they're like, we can't, this is a results league.
Starting point is 00:44:39 We have to either win or get rid of you because your contract isn't guaranteed or anything. So they sent me down to AAA. And then the pitching coach who was Vern Rule. In that meeting, when I got sent down, I just thought for sure that he would say, hey, I don't know, maybe like, hey, this is partially my fault. Like, I kind of forced you to do things. I really want you to work on this in AAA, though. Keep going. And he just kept his mouth shut the whole time and was like, this is just about, you know, your results.
Starting point is 00:45:13 Art Howell led the meeting. I think Steve Phillips was the GM at the time. And Vernon rules just nodding like, yeah, the guy sucks, man. Just in the back, yep. I guess you're just not doing what we are hoping you do. He didn't say word. And so I went to AAA and I'm like, I'm not doing anything you say anymore. Like I didn't say it out loud, but I was like, I'm going to call up my dad,
Starting point is 00:45:32 who's to me, my best pitching coach by far. And I'm going to do it my way because I tried doing it your way and failed tremendously. So I'm not doing it your way anymore. I'm doing it my way. And I had like Oral Hersheiser the next year, great pitching coach. I loved having him. Like our brains kind of, you know, worked together on how to get people out with my stuff instead of trying to change me into a guy that, like, the only way I was going to throw 90 miles
Starting point is 00:46:01 an hour consistently was to shoot a needle. Like, that was the only way that that was going to work. God did not create me to throw 90 miles an hour. As hard as I was trying to do it, the only way I was going to do it at that time, and that was right about when testing came in, was to try to get a lot of. away with doing steroids. And I just didn't go down that route. So it was like, how do I pitch at 84 to 88 miles an hour, which ultimately didn't work
Starting point is 00:46:27 out for me, but I competed for 13 years professionally with it. Were you ever offered the needle? No, but in 07, I almost called a couple of my buddies who I knew had taken it or were taking it and go, hey, I can't throw a baseball the way I want. want anymore. It hurts. Could this help? Like I almost like I almost I almost went down that route. I didn't make that phone call. Ended up not doing it. And in a way, I'm really glad I didn't because I can say, whether people believe me or not, I know, I didn't do it. I competed in the steroid era, never took a steroid. I know guys that were similar to me in talent, whether it was hitting or
Starting point is 00:47:13 pitching and some of them did do it and they got millions of dollars and and it changed their career and and i know that they have a lot more money than i do but i'm going to like hey this is who i was i competed with this is what i had you're still eligible for the hall of fame i haven't signed my retirement papers yet how about that oh is that right yeah when that happened in i don't know, 2009, and they're like, hey, are you retiring? I was like, I don't think anybody really cares if I send in these papers. I don't think on the Hall of Fame ballot, they're going to worry too much about me. Like, oh, this Bassett guy's been out of league for five years.
Starting point is 00:47:53 Should I vote him yes or no with his 10 wins and 5 ERA? No one, no, none of the stops you're at offered the one-day contract. I'll sign you just so you can retire a met, a Albuquerque, whatever. I got a jersey up in Arlington at least somewhere, right? Where did you go to high school? Duncanville. Oh, Duncanville. There you go further.
Starting point is 00:48:13 Yeah. No, I don't have that either. Oh, no. I am in their Hall of Honor, though. How about that? I do have that going for me. From what I understand, you were an awesome high school basketball player, too. You ever think about that in college or going to college?
Starting point is 00:48:28 So I get, you know, it's funny is I want to prove to Dave and Jared because, obviously, maybe I brag too much at times. But Frank Anderson, who's one of the pitching coaches for the, San Francisco Giants. He was the lead recruiter at Texas Tech when I was there. And I'll tell him, like, I was an awesome hitter. I mean, super awesome hitter. No doubt in my mind I would have made it to AA as a hitter. Major leagues, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:48:51 I just had to change some things. But I almost want to take them over to Frank Anderson and be like, Frank, you recruited me? Tell them what you saw as a high school player and what I could do. But basketball, I was solid at basketball. I made second team all district my junior year, which at Duncanville, you know, my nickname was Casper. I was the white guy on the team. But I could play.
Starting point is 00:49:15 I could play well enough that small schools were like, hey, is he interested in possibly, you know, they say playing basketball. I know if I would have gone to college at very small colleges, I would have been Bill Winnington on the Mavericks and waved the towel and cheered on the guys and done my job in practice. I wouldn't have got on the court. I was not fast enough or athletic enough to play at a college level, but I could shoot and I was smart. And they were like, he's already competing at Duncanville and getting minutes there. Like, we can throw him here and he'll, you know, wave a towel. And if we need somebody to come in and shoot threes, which was at that point,
Starting point is 00:49:53 you'd get yelled at. If you shot three three pointers in a quarter and missed all three, you are not playing the rest of the game. Now they're like, why didn't you shoot six more? Do your kids play basketball? My 16-year-old still does. Make you crazy watching the game? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:13 They just chuck. Oh, it's horrible. You have to pay 20 bucks to go see them every time. I can't understand, like, oh, a three is worth more than two. Well, not if the kid never makes it. So if they never make it, you still want them shooting a shot that they have a 5% chance of going in? Yeah, that's that classic. You've dealt with this more in baseball than anything else.
Starting point is 00:50:32 development versus winning type thing. You know, I mean, if you're coaching a kid in high school, you always hear about that, right? Dan's like they're frying this kid's arm because the coach needs to win or in basketball, whatever it is. Because they're not there. They're not there to just win. Ideally, they're sending you to the next level.
Starting point is 00:50:51 Those are sometimes at confluence. Here's my question for you guys, because you guys know me as a huge Dallas Maverick NBA fan. I've probably watched five games in the last two years of NBA basketball. Yeah, I know you retired. Didn't you come out of retirement? Are you back? I've watched a little bit of Luca.
Starting point is 00:51:07 I've watched a little bit of Luca, but even before Luca got traded, quite a bit of it is Luca, I just started falling out of the love with the rules of the game and the way it's being played. The players are doing what the league is telling them to do. Just lay on the floor, act like you've been, you know, shot by a sniper in the stands. First thing. Take seven steps. We don't care. Double or triple dribble.
Starting point is 00:51:32 we didn't see the first two dribbles you took, just pick it up and re-dribble again. It's like they're just doing what they're allowed to do. If you just tightened it up a little bit and said, you know, we're going to call double dribbles. And after three steps, we're pretty good. Like, you've taken enough steps. You don't need two more.
Starting point is 00:51:51 Yeah, I just don't like all the cornrows and the tattoos. Right. Yeah, baggy pants. Bothers me. You had five major league hits. So that made me, like you just said you were a great. hitter in high school. I should have assumed that. We all hate the, you know, we all hate the best athlete in school because you're like, oh, well, how about, can I just be a pitcher? No, no, he's the
Starting point is 00:52:13 best pitcher. Well, can I play shorts? No, no, he plays shortstop. Yeah, but he's left-handed. Yeah, that doesn't matter. He's still great. Did you play shortstop? No, first base. Okay. Try it to be your brother. But that's always really weird to me. It's weird that great hitter in high school, whatever, you get drafted out of high school, and then they're like, stop hitting. Do you stop? When you're drafted by a National League team, actually, you're drafted by the Indians, right? Yeah, so I had to stop. They're like, you're not hitting. We tried working in the contract. My dad tried working into the contract that I would play two days a week in the minor leagues as a D.H. or first baseman. And they wouldn't go for it. Oh, wow. Does that happen ever?
Starting point is 00:52:59 completely not well at the time there was a guy named brooks keishnik at university of texas who was a superstar two-way guy so you know when he got drafted they were like let's have him do both um it's rare it wasn't in cleveland system they're like no so it was super rare but it was like wait a second like there's teams that don't like me as a pitcher they don't think i throw hard enough to maybe become a major leaguer but they do think i hit good enough to maybe become a major leaguer so on power Do you have power? Yes and no. And what I mean by that is, yeah, there were some showcases where I would go to like top 100 players in the country. And I was like, Eric Chavez was there, guys like that around my age. And I was, I couldn't hit it as consistently as far as them, but I could hit it as far as them sometimes, if that makes sense. So there was the ability there. I would show the ability to do that.
Starting point is 00:53:56 But could I consistently do it? And Chavez was like the six. overall pick in the draft. But yeah, I could hit the ball with a metal bat. You know, I could hit the ball 420 to 430 feet if I got into it perfectly. You had five Major League hits, one double. Oh, two doubles. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:54:16 But I will tell you what was tough is from 1996 to 01, I'm not touching a bat. Then I get traded to the Mets and they're like, yeah, now you're going to swing a bat again. So I hadn't faced pitching since high school. That's what the weird thing is. Then all of a sudden you're not just facing pitching. You're facing major league pitching. Yeah. And asked to do it.
Starting point is 00:54:36 Did they make you learn to bunt a lot? A lot. I learned the fun thing now is in when guys bunt. I do know a lot about bunting. Obviously, I didn't bunt in high school. Yeah. But I had to learn how to do it when I got to the Mets. And the first thing, I'm working off a machine at 90 miles an hour, and I'm bunning the ball.
Starting point is 00:54:54 And if you do it wrong, like I was doing, I could see it and make contact with it. I didn't know how to deaden the ball. I was bunning the ball. No, that's wrong. Oh, it's wrong to do this? Yes, very wrong. How do you deaden it? Well, there's multiple ways to do it.
Starting point is 00:55:10 You can move your hand up on the bat, so you're kind of maybe catching it more off the end of the bat. But what I like doing is the firmer I held my top hand, for me I'm left-handed, the left-hand. The firmer I held it, the harder it would bounce off of the bat. The softer I would hold it, the bat will come back on you by just not holding it that hard. But the worst thing to do, you got to see the ball out in front of you.
Starting point is 00:55:31 I know this is maybe YouTube. You got to see the ball in front of you. If you do like this and then pull it back, what happens? My eyes get in front of the bat. I'm not going to be able to see the ball out in front. So I got to extend my hands almost as far as my top hand can go. And now I'm just going to angle the bat with my bottom hand. So if I want it to go to third, for me, I just got to push that hand almost in front.
Starting point is 00:55:53 If I want it to go to first, I'm just taking my bottom hand and pulling it back a little bit. But the worst thing you can do, if any kids are listening or coaches, the worst thing you can tell is to pull the bat back while you're trying to deaden it. We're big with kids. Yeah, a lot of kids are watching this right now. So your advice for Jake, he's going out to throw the first pitch. Yeah. What would you, former Major League pitcher, tell him?
Starting point is 00:56:16 Play a little bit of catch if you can on the side. I don't know if they'll let you to just to kind of throw like five balls. Yes, that would be helpful. Or underneath. A lot of stadiums and stuff, we'll see these places like, oh, this is where the first pitch people can kind of, warm up a little bit. So I just say, you know, get in a couple throws, so it's not your first throw of the day.
Starting point is 00:56:34 It wouldn't be, but that's fine. And then... I was up very early this morning. Have fun. Have fun. Let it rip. Yeah, we're good. Are your kids good?
Starting point is 00:56:44 My 18-year-old who's going into a senior year. I guess that'd be weird to say, no, they suck. Well... But, I mean, are they major league possibly good? You have a major league bad. You are a major league. At this point, no. But my 18-year-old is good enough that he'll...
Starting point is 00:56:58 he's going to play college baseball. Okay. So, I mean, there's a huge difference between major leagues and college baseball. People still think, like, oh, but SEC and like, yeah, look how long it took Jack Leiter and Kamar Rocker, who they would have like three guys on base every game they pitch for Vanderbilt for the whole game. And then look how tough it is to be like, oh, yeah, you know, there's only a few Paul Skeens ever, like, you know, once a decade for the most part. It's very tough.
Starting point is 00:57:25 But, yeah, he's good enough that he will be able to play in college. But pro level, he would definitely need to mature and get stronger. And the game is all about how big you are slash how far you can hit it and how hard you can throw it. Like having good IQ is not really something teams like value. What do you remember from our Cliff Lee conversation? Do you remember you and me going in? You introduced me to Cliff Lee? No, I don't.
Starting point is 00:57:55 Okay. It was because then I started arguing with Cliff Lee about it was the natural talent versus the hard work. Okay. And Cliff Lee kind of always exuded the reason I'm this good is because of the hard work. Natural talent didn't have a lot to do with it. I just didn't remember it was Cliff Lee. Okay. And it was just the, my argument always was I could have thrown all every day.
Starting point is 00:58:25 I could have worked as hard as Cliff Lee did, I would never be as good as Mike Bassick was. Whereas I just feel like there is a top, whatever, 0.1% of athletes. Now, among those, I bet Cliff Lee worked harder than everybody else around him. Agreed. But he would never really, he couldn't bring himself to say that, actually, I had a great advantage, you know. Many such cases to start.
Starting point is 00:58:52 Tom House is one of the great pitching coaches. of all time. If I give him 100 kids at five years old and he gets to work with those kids up to 21 years old, that doesn't mean all 100 kids are going to make the major leagues. You're still going to run into the percentage of their bodies just aren't talented enough. As much as Tom House is teaching them all the right things to maximize their ability and their potential, still some of those kids' potential is 80 miles an hour. And that's it. Well, that's not going to get you where you need to go. So I'm with you. And then it's, Once you get to a certain level, once you get drafted and we're starting that, you know, pyramid of success, all right, how are you going to separate yourself now that we've eliminated 98% of the competition through talent?
Starting point is 00:59:38 How are you going to now beat all of these really talented guys? Were you that guy or no? Of? Like, were you that? It was a different era, too, because back then you were probably still eating fast food and stuff. Oh, for sure. the 18, 19-year-olds now are eating like LeBron and Tom Brady. For sure.
Starting point is 00:59:57 Like, I mean, when you're $850 a month in the minor leagues, like, you don't have really many options of, like, going and really getting some good food to eat. What was it? You're a first-round pick? 18th. 18th round? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:09 Oh, okay. I didn't know. Sorry. Hey, I guess first-round pick they're giving you a lot more leash. I got fifth round money. People thought, people thought I was going to college for sure. And what was that? $150,000.
Starting point is 01:00:22 $150,000. plus college, right? Right. They said they'll pay for your college wherever you get in. Yeah, wherever you signed with. So I signed with Texas Tech at that time. This will be since you have kids that have gone to college, college. Texas Tech, 1996, all in per semester or all in for a year.
Starting point is 01:00:39 What do you think it was a full ride to Tech with food, books, everything, 1996? Like 10 grand tops? Lower. 7,000. Yeah. Wow. Does that make sense for, you know, Clemson and everything? everything? No, no, no. But you know, what are you going to do? All right, you're looking at your
Starting point is 01:01:00 watch. You know what? I would like to, let's have you on again. Would maybe even like to have you out of the game stream, cowboy game stream or something. Oh, I like watching those. Mike Bassick, has been in my pool. So you've been out to my house. Yeah, grapevine. Should I said that or should I let that? Oh, we're very open. Great Vine's big enough. They can't find you. It's all good. Ladies and gentlemen, it is Mike Bassick. Thank you for joining us, Mike Bassick. All right, let's go do a baseball game. Great seeing you.
Starting point is 01:01:28 All right, let's go Rangers. See you, dude. You know what that reminds me of? I can't wait to hear it. Trident Garage Doors. That works for me. Trident Garage Doors, Gates. That's what they're about.
Starting point is 01:01:43 Access Services. That's what they do there at Trident. TXTRIDint.com 817-51212. veteran and first responder owned and operated. So if anybody shows up and tries to mess with the gate while they're installing it, they'll kick their ass. I think that's what that means. Dumbzone listeners get a 10% discount. There's things you might try to fix on your own, and then there's your garage door or a gate.
Starting point is 01:02:08 Don't even try it. If it's sticking or if it's making noises, have them come out, inspect it, and go from there at Texas Trident. TXTRIDOT.com 817-512. 12. So anything else in sport? Because I know we want to do the MBR today. Yeah, I think we need to do. We got news.
Starting point is 01:02:30 What? I think we need to do NBR, viewer mail, and get moving. Get to it. Well, let's do a little viewer mail then. I still don't really know when I need to leave. Oh, yeah. Wait a minute. Uncle Hotmail.
Starting point is 01:02:44 Probably 30, right, Blake? Yeah. 12.30? Okay, good. leaving 1130. That would not be good. I only have a couple this week. By the way,
Starting point is 01:03:02 I'm seeing that Ryan Dries was ultimately sent down after a fight in the locker room with catcher Rod Barajas in that 2006. I don't want to, you know. Rangers? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:03:14 Oh, okay. When Mike was like, I don't really know what happened the next year he got sent down. Oh, well. Yeah. You don't pick a fight with Barahas. Not Rod Barajah.
Starting point is 01:03:22 dude Patrick has a book question because I am the guy to ask about that my daughter was assigned her sixth grade reading for the summer so naturally three weeks before school starts she begins her first book on her list the Hobbit
Starting point is 01:03:43 okay I wasn't aware that she had started it yet she then asked me if she could listen to the audio book that she had on my Spotify It was The Hobbit. I told her I didn't think that counted a summer reading. She claimed if you actually follow the book while listening, it counted. So she has the book open, but you're listening to the audiobook.
Starting point is 01:04:08 Yeah. He says, I'm not buying it. So please, I need your advice. Always punt to go stars from Patrick Butt. This is fascinating to me. You hear about people that don't have internal dialogue or they can't. Like, TC can't see pictures in his head or something weird. What?
Starting point is 01:04:27 I don't know. So if you need, like, the problem you know, it's not a problem. I guess it's more of just the way the market's set up. You have to pay for each thing. Because sometimes I'd like to have this ability, if any other reason than just you're reading a book and now you want to listen to it later, but you can't. You have to buy each thing for $15.
Starting point is 01:04:48 So it's not really a cost-effective way to read books, is what I'm saying. If every book you decide... No, but is it like... Is it reading? Is it... Yeah, is it... Stimulating...
Starting point is 01:04:58 ...over the words with your eyes and someone else's voice is saying it. That is reading. There's a book in front of you and you're following with your eyes. That is definitionally reading. I mean... That's how kids learn to read.
Starting point is 01:05:12 And, you know, I know you've told me that you'll change the head... The voice in your head to like a southern black guy in the bayou whenever you read. That's just because it's a different voice. It doesn't be your... not reading.
Starting point is 01:05:23 So just because they, that's reading. It's the stimulus. The stimulating is it the same whatever, little pieces of creativity that. If your eyes are on the words, I feel like they, that. You know, because the problem to me, with your point of it's not reading, is that I'm not sure of listening to a book, it all develops your ability to write. And reading helps develop your ability to write. and that's to me
Starting point is 01:05:51 way more important than I ever thought it would be because I'll just tell somebody if they email me now. I'm like, this is a fucking good-ass email, dude, you wrote your own email. You're a good writer. Because 90% of the ones I get, I'm like, okay.
Starting point is 01:06:06 Can anyone confirm that? Does anybody got a reply from Jake? I can show you. These guys just haven't written good emails. They're written by AI. Yeah. Like you see tweets or, like you can tell that when people use AI to write their email.
Starting point is 01:06:20 bill. So, in any case, uh, thing you thought would be a bigger deal whenever you were a kid, getting AIDS from the toilet. AIDS? Yes, Blake. There was a time. We didn't know how to get it, but it was a way more broad, uh, the possibilities of how to get it. Like if they said, somebody said on a toilet seat and you did also.
Starting point is 01:06:46 I have a few of those. This is from Lauren. Yeah. Uh, there's several. I'm going to read them off pretty quick. We've done some of them. Turning the internal car light on at night. Your parents always see. Hey, turn that light off. They were right to say that.
Starting point is 01:07:01 Yeah. It could run out of battery. No, I don't think that's why. While driving. Yeah. Oh. It's distracting. I can't see. Dude, yes.
Starting point is 01:07:09 Yes. Because that is one, no, that is one of the things changes that I made. Once I was a parent and my kids wanted the light on, I'd like, okay. It didn't bother me at all. I do, I let them do it, but it bothers me like crazy. Oh, it does? Yeah, it's distracting. And I feel like for other drivers on the road.
Starting point is 01:07:28 Where do you let them take their shoes off in the car too? You know, that's illegal. Swimming after eating piranhas, the Brue the triangle. My kids eat in the pool. I'm like, you know how dumb this is the idea of, I would sit. We also had a freaking watch, we're staring at it. It had to be 20 minutes. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:07:44 As if there was some scientist that did a, uh, and the 19-minute kid cramped up and then died. You wouldn't believe. Like, we ran this study. We had a thousand kids, and yeah. 400 of them died. Right. Acid rain. See, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:08:00 You may be too young, Blake, but I was worried. I was legitimately worried about that. And when it would get hot and rain in the summer, I'm like, this has got to be it. This has got to be it. Anacondas, swallowing chewing gum, sitting too close to the TV. Swallowing chewing gum, it would never leave your system, right? Maybe eight years. Seven years?
Starting point is 01:08:19 Yeah. like that. Eating watermelon seeds and black holes. A watermelon could start growing inside your stomach. Right. Well, my daughter asked me the other day why that doesn't happen, and I would not call my answer convincing. I was like, maybe because you wouldn't get sun.
Starting point is 01:08:40 Okay, that's a pretty good one. She's like, all right. Could be the acids in your stomach could eat the, you know, break down that seed. But again, I don't know a lot about acid. I have one follow-up from the Lindsay Sterling show I went to last weekend. Across the street is a cricket field. I guess I was wrong in assuming there was a game of cricket going on over there. Because John emails me and says,
Starting point is 01:09:06 I heard your segment on the Lindsay Sterling show. You may have been told already. Just wanted to let you know it wasn't a cricket match next door, but it was a Harry Potter-themed drone show. Okay. They do it at the stadium. I guess. So was that just the biggest collection of nerds we've had in some time?
Starting point is 01:09:26 I bet Chinese people have been doing this for a long time, like going to stadiums to see drone shows. Because if you think about it, I bet Chinese people have been doing this for a long time. Okay. There's a lot more going on over there than you realize. They got different cars. You know that, right?
Starting point is 01:09:42 They got some electric car that we can't get, right? They have a lot of stuff you can't get. Really? Yeah. Like health care. No, we're not turning into the Malzone folks. But if you think about when you've seen a drone show, it's usually on, for me, it's been on July 4th.
Starting point is 01:09:58 And you're just kind of like where you go watch fireworks, which is like a field or your buddy's roof or the bed of a truck. But if they have these big badass drone shows, it almost makes sense to do it, like at a spectator stadium, like buy a ticket, get a seat. When you say big badass drone show, do you mean a Harry Potter-themed one? Well, I... I mean, did you see it?
Starting point is 01:10:21 Did you have the ability to criticize this? I have never, I know you're talking to him, but I can't, like, contextualize this because, much like when 50 Cent challenged Floyd Mayweather, I've never read one page of a Harry Potter book. I've never seen one scene of a movie. I don't know any other characters besides Harry Potter. But I assume there's some war or battles, right?
Starting point is 01:10:47 I couldn't see it. I'm just a normie. My leader is Dan playing the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire theme song when he asks questions. I don't care when you punt that from John. Okay. Somebody sent me this one about youth baseball. This is probably happening a lot. I know what happens in cheerleading, where every single tournament your kid is going to go to is the Nationals.
Starting point is 01:11:13 Daniel said his son played in a world baseball classic travel ball tournament this weekend. Deems of assortment random countries. with no requisite connections to the team country. Anyways, we played Team USA. There was a kid with the quasi-inocuous last name of C-O-O-N. Not full-back Packers spelling with K-U-H-N. Anyway, guess his number choice? Terry Coon, right?
Starting point is 01:11:43 The actress. The actress. That's how she spells name. He says, anyways, guess his number choice. Here's a clue. it was higher than Dirk's and lower than Tony Palomas. Felt intentional? Yeah, I don't know who Tony Paloma is.
Starting point is 01:11:58 I think he... Troy Palomalu. Oh, I don't know who Tony Palomalu is either, but... That's what he wrote. Palomalu was 43. Paulomalo was 43. Context clues. Well, there you go.
Starting point is 01:12:07 I just... I assumed 43, yeah. I stopped short of taking picture of the 12-year-old who was a giant kid who was likely a great exception because, of course... Wait, he was a white kid with that name? Yeah. Ah, all right. Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 01:12:21 I don't know what to do with this. Well, having the name is not his choice. No, but yeah, yeah, yeah, right. Feels like the dad's doing a bit he shouldn't be doing. No. 12 is probably old enough. He knows. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:37 You think? Yeah. Kids are growing up pretty fast these days. I have a movie trope in a W-HL. The movie trope, when two characters, are having a conversation and then mid-convo, they cut to the same people having that exact same conversation somewhere else. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:12:59 They're talking about something in the bar, then they cut to their walking down the street. It's just like two cents later. But it picked up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right. Or it's like, yeah, yeah, like even an hour later. Clearly there's a shift in time,
Starting point is 01:13:11 but now you're sitting on the couch drinking a cup of wine. I saw that just the other day on Billions. Didn't give a name, but a big fan of the Motor City Kitties. Then at W.HL, this guy was on a flight. He wanted to detail the meal choices on his airplane ride. Okay? Here they are. Baby, child, bland, low sodium, diabetic,
Starting point is 01:13:39 Hindu, Muslim, Muslim, gluten intolerant, kosher, low fat, low cholesterol, non-lactylum. vegan, vegetarian, Asian vegetarian, and lacto-vegetarian. Lacto-vegetarian. Wait, what's Asian vegetarian? I don't know. Sounds great. It does sound great. That's on a flight?
Starting point is 01:13:58 Yep. Yeah. I mean, I want people to be happy, but I also don't like having to... That probably makes your flight more expensive. I'll take the baby. Will you do that if we get... Yeah. We're on a flight soon?
Starting point is 01:14:11 Yeah. Ask the flight attendant to bring you baby food. Bring me the titty. Ah! Yeah. Shall we slide into some MBR? I think that sounds excellent. All right.
Starting point is 01:14:28 I'm excited. The MBR is our monthly. It's that time of the month. Connie Roso presents the Dumb Zones. Are my a dirtbag if I drink the rest of Mike Bassix water? There's two new ones back there. Oh, there is. You are a dirtbag for way more.
Starting point is 01:14:48 reasons than that. Yes, thank you, Conne Roso. Yes, sir. Cone Roso's Oli's Pizza Pills, learning to any food you want, most likely they can do. Even burgers. Even burgers. Yeah, so...
Starting point is 01:15:05 Go to brunch at Conneroso. Go to brunch? Yeah. Breakfast pizza. Yeah, they are... Don't forget pilf catering, though. That is what powers all of our... football watching parties high atop my garage. We are catered every week by PILF catering.
Starting point is 01:15:26 Five more weeks. That could mean they'll bring out the wood burning oven right there in your driveway, cookies and pizzas, or then I might bring out the burger thing, the sliders. Anyway, here's Blake, folks. So I typically will begin by begging you to like and share our stuff. I'm not going to do that. Instead, I'm going to ask for this. So we've detailed breaking contain.
Starting point is 01:15:50 Sometimes we'll break contain on the internet. We'll have people from Belgium tell us we're idiots because we didn't know they spoke French. Jake, I think it would be funny if our people began fighting with other sex of the internet. You want little armies? I kind of do. Then put them at your command.
Starting point is 01:16:13 I'm out of the game. I'm out of the game. This is a guy with a beehive. Yeah, no. Unleash him. He wants him to start buzzing around. No, but just to let people know. Really, it's just like moving ants from one ant hill to another ant hill and just seeing what happens.
Starting point is 01:16:27 And I like that idea. Go ahead. But the term Blake is using, we've been using it internally, breaking contain, which is, have we talked about this on the show at all? We have, okay. Good. I didn't know that. But I don't know. If you want to fight on the internet, go fight at Blake's behest.
Starting point is 01:16:45 But I thought your bit is fighting on the internet now. Like, dude, I love it. I get a little juice out of it. Uh, yeah. I'm like, what are you doing? And he's like, ah, no, it's fun. Oh, I do. I certainly do.
Starting point is 01:16:55 I, uh, I'll, I'll be on my phone and see two people with, like, 50 followers that I somehow stumbled into fighting. And I just feel like, this guy's an idiot. You're right. You're winning this. Like, I'll just reply. It's fun. Like, who the fuck is this guy?
Starting point is 01:17:12 You know, some sports podcast? It's fun. But I don't want to, I don't want to, you know. That feels a little too barstoolie is what I'm. I'm trying to tell you. Hey, sick them. Remember people used to do that? Like, a P1 Hornets Nest.
Starting point is 01:17:24 It's like, I don't know, man. Like, do whatever. Jake hate you. Okay, never mind. Jake shot it down. Yeah. That's what we're here for. Not every idea is a good one.
Starting point is 01:17:33 Well, how about this one? Gummy Thought of the Month. Why is there not mouse-flavored cat food? That was a good one. Every time I've given my cat food since then, I think about that one. Things Dan or Jake want. Dan didn't want anything from the month I can't get you anything if you don't say anything
Starting point is 01:17:52 The man who has it all What do you get him So just Jake ones Let's see Jake has always wanted someone waiting at the airport For him with his name on a sign Yeah I saw it a lot in this last month And every time you're like I bet John's living right
Starting point is 01:18:07 Jake has always wanted to work at a hotel That Absolutely I could see doing that for a minute if I won the lottery be fun. All right. And then Jake wants to die with a dignified transfer. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:18:27 After learning about what that was, sure. What is it? Well, you have to be like a state. It's the military, but it's like you're in one country and they're going to bring you, you've died and they're going to bring you back. But this is not just some normal transfer. We're not on Spirit Airlines. Yeah. We're upgrading to dignified transfer.
Starting point is 01:18:49 Okay. The slight bit of comedy here, if there is any, is you're dead. I don't know that it matters like all that much if they put a little adverb or something, adjective onto the family. No, no, dude, it's cool. It's dignified. Time capsule. This month we had the MLB draft, and Rob Manfred mispronounced the number one pick's name.
Starting point is 01:19:16 Rock Chilowski. Apologies, T.C. T.C., come on up here. Let's hang out. Time capsule. Jake thinks that they'll fix it with AI. Hey, everybody's T.C. Joining the MBR.
Starting point is 01:19:33 Who was the number one overall pick? Was that a White Sock? Oh, go ahead. Chalows. Yeah, Rock Chalowski. Rock? His name is Rock. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 01:19:41 And I think he said Rock Chalusky. Yeah. And, yeah, that'll be fixed with AI. Yeah, that's what Jake claimed. Yeah. Dude, we haven't even talked about this, but we were taking a photo with, you know, 20 people this weekend. I don't even want to get to a bad move,
Starting point is 01:19:57 but it just drives me crazy that women and moms and wives would be like, we've got to do the photo for everyone, everyone, everyone, everyone. And my kid, you know, everyone knows the kids. She's freaking out. She hates it. She's like, I hate this, I hate this, I hate this. And I'm like, well, you know, there's a world where we just don't make you do it because why the fuck?
Starting point is 01:20:13 But some kids wouldn't get in the picture. And people were just like, Don't worry, we'll AI it. And I was like, the hell you will. I was like, they're not in the photo. It didn't happen. You're not going to AI it. Like, that's just the thing people say now?
Starting point is 01:20:27 Yeah. You weren't there. I've told you this. Football team photos, they take them individually, and then we'll put them all together like we used to be. I'm with Basick. Change the rules. Game I love.
Starting point is 01:20:41 Chilowski said that he recorded the correct pronunciation of his name and sent it to Manfred. Of course he did. And that Manfred still was like, eh, I'll do my way. Maybe the first shot across the bow of the players union. Maybe. Smart. It just seems like a stunning thing to get wrong.
Starting point is 01:21:01 Yeah, it's not round eight. Like, I don't think I can screw up that bad at my work and keep the job. Also in the time capsule, Dan predicts failure for Cam Ward says he won't get a second contract with the Titans. I'll tell you what. You guys are, oh, it's, because I'm. I was listening when I was gone. He was like, oh, look at the... He breaks iPads.
Starting point is 01:21:23 That's funny. What fire. It might be funny, but he's a dope. Like, how about just... Do you need to break seven iPads in the year to show your fire and your passion? How about this? Try not throwing an interception.
Starting point is 01:21:37 Let's do that. We didn't fall in love with him for that alone. But you guys are like the dumb zone. We're all so into Cam Ward. I don't... You came in with that on your own. Dan and Jake are on board. We know you're a hater because Dan doesn't allow for some guy who's got like a temper and lets his emotions kind of lead him as a quarterback.
Starting point is 01:22:01 Like, that's just not a guy he would ever rally for. So, Gameworth, not his type of player. I've known that from day one. There's only one. There can only be one. Movie tropes in a car race When Someone Catches Up to the Winter They look surprised
Starting point is 01:22:18 And then start driving faster Yeah Yeah The guy who's ahead Yeah I didn't even want to go fast till now This option was available to me The person who didn't know
Starting point is 01:22:32 They were shot until they see blood on their shirt Oh my God Why don't you tell me you were hit? I think that happens though I don't know I've never been shot, but I feel like immediately, literally everyone around ever would know that I was wailing like a bitch. But in these movies, like the guy described, it's like in the back seat of a car. Somebody lifts up their shirt.
Starting point is 01:22:53 Oh. But I've heard, you know, in my podcast about people getting shot that I love so much, they'll say that you go into shock. It's not every time, but it's definitely a thing that can't happen. God, I hope I'm a shock one. I feel like a whaler. There's no way, dude. I'd rather get shot versus getting stabbed by. a million. I'm scared of getting stabbed, getting shot, yeah, whatever.
Starting point is 01:23:15 Well, females can take stabbing easier. That's a point I once made. I don't want to touch that. That's fine, move on. Okay. That's why they have the cabin. The final movie trope, when you're trying to hide smoking and you just like wave it away before someone walks in. Never know what was going on in here.
Starting point is 01:23:38 The swine line, four new entries. Ramona Shelburne. Yeah. The matriarch. And Nicole Smith. Sherry Shepard. And Katie Mixon. It's a good list.
Starting point is 01:23:54 Sherry Shepard. Katie Mixon is the wife from Eastbound and Down. Yeah. Ooh. We have one ball sack from the month. It's the DAC picture. Which we have on screen. If you're joining us here in the mockingbird room,
Starting point is 01:24:09 This is the picture that Jake fell for. Jake thought Dak actually looked at this swole. And he's standing next to Taylor Luan, who is a former offensive lineman, so it's not Larry Lacewell. But here's your quarterback who's going to throw for 50 touchdowns this season. He does. Jake's like, do you guys see Dak?
Starting point is 01:24:30 He's been working out. I mean, imagine if he was. Yeah, I got sacked. It's, uh, I honestly this morning, Lance Forehand sent me two pictures of DAC from, because there's a photo of this year. And the first reply is him from like two years ago. And I'm like, I'll show the guys.
Starting point is 01:24:54 And look, he's someone. Just didn't just thought, fuck it. There's no point. There's no point. He looks exactly the same as he always has. Yeah. Maybe smaller. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:25:07 All right. And then general notes from the show. This from July. They never finished painting the wailing wall. It was a big deal. We're going to cover it up. Not only did they not finish painting it, a fucking week later, everybody had a news story about it.
Starting point is 01:25:20 After we talked about it for two straight days. They never finished covering it up. They didn't do anything. I was looking into this. I believe it's for legal reasons. I think they know they made a big boo-boo and that they were hoping whatever fine they eventually have to pay is less if they stopped.
Starting point is 01:25:37 They stopped at 98%. It's very funny. It's so good. What if they win the court case and now they can finally finish the World Cup mural? So they painted it. In anticipation of it. They covered it with just blue paint, right? Like a primer almost, right?
Starting point is 01:25:57 Yeah. So if you only get, if you only finish 98% of it, do you end up with the blue walls? No, no, sit back down. Boo this man. I'm basket baby I saw I don't understand I think I've heard understood
Starting point is 01:26:21 I saw some indication No that's good they just don't get it that there was a like that no one ever said yes like there was some discussion at City Hall amongst the people of like are we allowed to paint over this and like the last thing in the chain was like
Starting point is 01:26:37 someone at the art museum being like I don't know you know like I had a couple questions and then that was the end of the thread and they just painted over it. I bet stuff like that happens all the time. Just basic mismanagement. But now I feel like it's available
Starting point is 01:26:54 for somebody to do something cool with. I hope they put the whales better. I know I promised I wouldn't do this, but this morning whenever you guys told me like Basic and Jared were going to be here, I was like the first thing I thought was, man, sure would be cool if they were sitting in Jimmy and Rosalind Carter's chairs.
Starting point is 01:27:12 Anytime we have two, guess now, I think about those chairs. So if there's something we can do with this wall, let's not pass on an opportunity. So it's in a legal situation now. Would Franco and Franco be able to help them or no? Is Franco and Franco? What's their specialty? There's nothing they can't do. No, they're a personal injury firm, so they're very much is. But you could at least ask. But if you're up painting on that wall or something and then you fell off the ladder because of unsafe condition? Or then the guy falls on you? Who's at fault there? What if a a semi-truck ran into you while you were painting the bottom of the wall.
Starting point is 01:27:49 Somebody's got to pay. 214 or 817, then dial all threes, or go to franklfirm.com. They're great. They're awesome to work with. You'll talk to a partner, and they'll answer questions for you. You might say, hey, is this a dumb question? They'll say no. Go ahead and call them.
Starting point is 01:28:07 Ask, can you help me with this wall situation? They'll be like, oh, actually, no. Well, maybe. If you fell off the wall, they could probably help. you. If you're asking why did this get painted this way, maybe not. But you won't know until you call. 214, 817, and then all threes. Go ahead, Blake. July 6th, Jake likes seeing other people not having a good time on vacation.
Starting point is 01:28:31 Yeah, and that's a bad, that's a bad take. I want everyone to be happy. But does that make you feel better? I mean, that's the way I feel when I see a homeless guy, you know? Well. Like, because I got a home. I don't feel that way as much. He's got a giant hog. But, yeah, his dog looks like it loves him. Yeah, just sometimes, I don't know, it's good for my wife, I think.
Starting point is 01:28:54 Because I think if you legitimately put like a mood meter on my wife, she's having a worse time on vacation than at home. And it's just like you've got to remind them, like, look, the logistics change. Everybody's yelling at each other. Well, it's because she put this vacation together and all she wanted was one good picture. Dude, how many moms? So mom. That is the mom's thing to say.
Starting point is 01:29:15 I put all this together. All I wanted was every mom has said that and you're like, well, then just get out of your own way a little bit there. While on vacation, Jake saw a lady watching two horses doing it. Did I ever tell you about that?
Starting point is 01:29:31 On a video. You did? I was blown away. I've been thinking about it a lot. Yeah. She was just watching, I think her TikTok feed was she was Latino. I think Central seemed like somewhere in Central... Boy, what an interesting detail. It was a hobby, I think. Like, she was into breeding horses. It seemed like it was in a stable.
Starting point is 01:29:47 I don't, like, can you call porn a hobby? I don't know that that's porn. I think she was watching... If you're watching animals, fuck, it's porn. If you live on a farm? No, that's no, there's a lot of... Yeah, National Geographic, come on. Or just if you have a farm and you've got to make them do it.
Starting point is 01:30:07 Nobody's going to call you a... They are. I might. I think you should. Like two underage horses? You're not called a... It doesn't feel like I saw this happen a few times in Hawaii. I saw you guys know about the roosters in Kauai.
Starting point is 01:30:24 They're everywhere. So I saw a lot of chicken sex. And let me tell you something, there's no consent happening there. That is getting walked down and assaulted. Yeah, I don't know about the whole animal kingdom, right? Don't think it happens. Don't think it happens.
Starting point is 01:30:39 Hey, sure? Can we do it now? Not a lot of missionary. It just looked like it was violent. Let's see. Dan was mad that the Marlins pulled Yuri Perez after seven perfect innings. So baseball. Doesn't establish the run guy join me there? The Marlins, the week after, went on a 12-game losing streak.
Starting point is 01:30:59 Ooh, see? Point in. Karma. Yep. Including two Yuri-Pres starts. So had he thrown the perfect game, they might not have lost since. Very likely. You see what I do with.
Starting point is 01:31:10 You see these two-likely the momentum would have. July 7th, the Spurs TV play-by-play guy's girlfriend leaks his affair with the Spurs player's sister on Instagram. Man, that's a great, that's a story that you hadn't heard before, and that's always my favorite. You don't get too many of those in 2026. He was fired a few days later. Damn.
Starting point is 01:31:31 And what was the, it was a very fringy player. Yeah. Like, lets you know, it doesn't have to be just a star. It's a lady that was around. Yeah. No, no, no, but I'm saying that, The play-by-play guy was nailing a player's sister. I should ask Dave about that.
Starting point is 01:31:48 Yeah. I'm sure he would have been real thrilled to talk. Rich Paul says LeBron could come to the mass because of oil and Africa. There's always next year. Why didn't that work? Alan Shipnick writes an article in how horny Phil Mickelson is. A lot of guys learned a lot of tips tools that day. That's a good article.
Starting point is 01:32:14 He showed... Yeah, so I give my phone... 50 bucks. Have you drive my phone around? I give... That's what I've been doing to Henry. Yeah, I just give him my phone. Go play golf for a day.
Starting point is 01:32:23 I got to do some banging. Right. He showed a picture of himself to Pat Perez's wife while he was naked, erect, and flexing a bicep. Let me show you this. Let's even back up. Just... What if I showed a picture to a lady of just me flexing a bicep?
Starting point is 01:32:41 Like, right there, you're like, That's kind of weird. All right, what if you were naked? So you just go all out? Well, I think it starts with you having the photo. Yeah. Like, is that ever happening? Me taking a photo of myself flexing?
Starting point is 01:32:53 Yeah. So, yeah, I mean. There are three things here, naked, like, I want to know the order. Like, do you just start with naked? Nah. What if I'm going to work it up a little bit? Well, still.
Starting point is 01:33:03 All right, I'm going to flex. So you probably have, like, 20 photos. Where some of them he wasn't flexing. Right. Some of them he was soft or flexing. Right. And you're just going to show that to a friend's wife. And he's not sure, but he's not sure she's into him.
Starting point is 01:33:19 You like this? Don't she want to make sure a little bit that? Well, how could she not be after she sees him flexing in a record? That's true. And again, he's filled before. It's worked before. Yes, he has used this move. Also, he has like a gazillion more dollars than Pat Perez.
Starting point is 01:33:35 So he's probably just thinking, like, ditch this loser. Yeah. He was, I guess it all makes sense, but following the threads of, As she was talking today, she hated both Phil Mickelson and Pat Perez. Yeah. That was an interesting inflection. There was a time where they were lovers. No longer.
Starting point is 01:33:54 July 7th, Jake knew a kid in seventh grade who told everyone he is going to have a backyard concert performed by Marilyn Manson thanks to Doritos 3D chips. TZ knows that story well. I think about that kid a lot. He had a tough time. That's a Hail Mary, you know? I mean, that's not a lie you make up if you have a lot of friends.
Starting point is 01:34:17 Jake got a jaywalking ticket at 16 after a brand new slash census fail concert. It was more census fail. All right. He was a runaway at the time. On the loose. I don't know that I've ever told them that part of that story.
Starting point is 01:34:31 That's a heavy one. We'll do it another day. Will you write that down? Jake ran away from home? That was when you ran away from home? Well, you can't really run. I mean, if you're 16, 17 years, old. You're not really running away. You're just like, I'm out.
Starting point is 01:34:45 And your first stop was a census fail concert? We had the tickets. You're not going to not use the tickets. I've heard the story where TC ran away. I was bouncing around on buddy's friends, couches, and guys who graduated for like two weeks. At the age of 16? I think it was 17. Still, that's something only a child from a broken home might do, though. Right? If both dad and mom there, because I, I, I could see myself just saying, yeah, I don't have to listen.
Starting point is 01:35:16 It was just hot. It was hot, man. We fought all. There was a lot of holes in walls and people yelling and throwing shit at each other. And fucking, it was a lot. Yeah, if you can't, like, I don't know if. My life is very chill now. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:35:29 I don't know if you had a car, but, like, if you can drive, like, is it count as run away if you're getting in your vehicle. Yeah, and I think at some point they did, I don't think I had a car. I think at some point it was pretty clear. They were like, yeah, no, it's all. It's our car. Yeah, were you the oldest person to run away from home? That's why I don't.
Starting point is 01:35:46 That's why I don't want it entered into the record that way. Like I had my stuffy. You just have snacks in a bag. You have a job. July 9th, a guy put porn on at Dan's Bachelor Party. Yeah. And then it says Dan's RA showed him Ron Jeremy porn. What?
Starting point is 01:36:12 He did. It wasn't just me. He showed a couple of them. No, no, no, no. Dan, Dan, did. Come here. Weird. It's just a weird guy.
Starting point is 01:36:18 Ladies, that's not something most dudes do. Show each other, porn? Yeah, that's like a 5% move. Maybe 10th. July 10th, Shottie had a lazy Sunday. I've really tried not to think about that as I get ready for the football season. Love that for him. It was around mini-camp time.
Starting point is 01:36:38 I don't care if it is on the moon. There is not a day where you're allowed to. If you're a head like, Lazy Sunday. Did you ever hear that Bill Parcells once had a lazy Sunday? No. No, no, no. I wouldn't be driven insane by the objective.
Starting point is 01:36:54 While being head coach of the Cowboys in the tenure, any one of the months, day, any day, Jimmy Johnson ever had what he called a lazy Sunday. No, you know what Jimmy Johnson did? When he got the offer to be the Cowboys head coach, he said to his wife, I'm just divorcing you now. That is a part of that story nobody talks about. It's all I've thought about is. I know all I'm going to care about is this job, so why don't we just get divorced ahead of time?
Starting point is 01:37:23 Right. And they did. Not let's see how it goes and we'll get. No one was cheating. Not I need to be well-rounded. There was a fight of four. Okay. Right.
Starting point is 01:37:31 I think we know where this is headed. We don't want well-rounded coat. We want guys sleeping in the office. Meanwhile, this is a lot of guys are married. Very few have two Super Bowls back-to-back. I know which one I want to be. I'll see you later. Other guy sitting on the couch from the kitchen.
Starting point is 01:37:46 You hear you want butter or buttercotch popcorn? Now, Shadi does have, I stayed at the apartment last night. He has a separate location. It's a good move. We need that drop, though, for when they lose. That lazy Sunday. Jake explains to us how Hawaiians are built for comfort, not speed. Yeah, everyone in here knows I'm dead on.
Starting point is 01:38:08 And then July 16th, Jake almost got in a fight on an air. plane. He hit a guy in the face with a water bottle. I didn't... Yeah, I guess I kind of did almost. Well, the guy got mad. The guy wanted to fight. And he deserved to be upset, but he just had a little more Tony Shashery on it than I needed. You know, I pulled a suitcase down and a water bottle was somehow up there, and it hit him in the face. Yeah, I think he'd be upset in that.
Starting point is 01:38:36 And he goes, what the fuck? And then he figured it out And his wife was very concerned He was like, what happened? He's like, this idiot, this idiot And then he He held the water bottle out to me And I reached a grab it and he dropped it
Starting point is 01:38:52 Oh, that's a fun move I was like, do what? Pick it up, loser Yeah Did you? Did you bend down and pick it up? Yeah, I did No, I'd kick it back in his face
Starting point is 01:39:02 I did and I felt emasculated Yeah, that's why he did it But you also weren't on the news the next day. I know, right? Like, the first pitch can hit the dirt. It's like, that's funny. Oh, I love bold on-air T-C, too. I'd kick it back in it. Yeah. Dump it on his face.
Starting point is 01:39:18 Your wife want to get wet? Yes, sir. Excuse me. Jake mad at people eating orange chicken in the movie theater. Oh, man. We're going to send intern Henry out to the Rangers Singles Night. I heard about that idea. I really like that idea.
Starting point is 01:39:34 When is it? It's this Sunday if you want to join Rangers singles game, it's a day game I think. What were they calling it? I'll find it. Glove Island. Glove Island.
Starting point is 01:39:46 Glove Island rules. Wow, I don't remember that. That's awesome. Really good stuff. That is great. But couldn't they like inadvertently be having a pride night? Like there's a way to do this if people are smart about it here. That's why Henry's going.
Starting point is 01:40:07 I still want Henry to be an extra on Tulsa or Frisk. go can or whatever. We got to stack his summer up. Too late now it's wrapped. And then finally, July 23rd, Dan's wife was on the phone with CVS upset with their system. You have lost the plot if you were
Starting point is 01:40:25 on the phone with CVS. Like, not the specific place. Like, if you're up the chain. Just complaining to somebody. I will be hurt. It is not a good way to do this. I would be hurt. I don't know, man. My wife talks to CBS a lot.
Starting point is 01:40:41 And I think she's got some points. Yeah, it ain't great. Here's your July. All right. Good times. You got a applause. That time of my mark. Good.
Starting point is 01:40:54 Any food you want. Most likely they can do. Even burgers. Even burgers. The dums are, Dumsa, dumps a dumps. So I just stopped throwing. In front of people, I would, you know, if it was football, like we're catching,
Starting point is 01:41:09 I'd toss it back underhanded. Yeah. If it was baseball, I'll catch you. Like you mentally. I couldn't do it. You mentally were like, I'm not throwing the talk. Yeah, because you do it enough times and people laugh. Like every dude who would throw.
Starting point is 01:41:22 That's awesome. But the truth is, the guys who don't throw, they're not, they just don't throw. So nobody ever laughs at him. You're listening to The Dumb Zone. Man, I listened to that so many times last night. I told you a couple weeks ago, I knew I knew there was something there. I just want to hear that part again. So I just stopped throwing.
Starting point is 01:41:50 You mentally were like, I'm not throwing. Yeah, because you do it enough times and people laugh. Like every dude who would throw. I just love how you laugh. Anyway, we have a big announcement to make. Is Spinks around here? He was here a minute ago. No Spinks.
Starting point is 01:42:08 Okay. Yeah, come on up here for a second, Robert. So we are going to officially be at training camp. Cowboys Training Camp, that is. I was talking to my daughter yesterday, the New York City daughter. She went to the bar from the rehearsal. Oh, right on.
Starting point is 01:42:33 Did you do the rehearsal? I think I did the first episode or two, but I would rather remember Nathan Fielder from Nathan for you and not anything else. I didn't do the plane season, but I did the first season. The rehearsal thing, yeah, they had the bar, and that's where they did trivia. And apparently they had that bar. It's in New York City, and they do trivia there every night.
Starting point is 01:42:59 And she said it was packed, and I thought that was cool. And then I told her, we're going to training camp next week. And she goes, what team? Great question. I was like, well, the Cowboys. And she goes, oh, yeah, because I thought you just did some random team for baseball. And I go, we did. We went to Brewer's spring training.
Starting point is 01:43:19 Good question on her part. Are we going to Falcons training camp? Right. No. Maybe next. Dallas Cowboys Training Camp. And we are going there and we have a title sponsor for our trip. And our title sponsor is Plum Quick.
Starting point is 01:43:36 One of our newest sponsors. Look at that. And joining us to do our Plum Quick spot for today and just talk about being the title sponsor, You know them, folks. It's Robert from Plum Quig. Hey. Seriously, Robert.
Starting point is 01:43:54 We have gotten a... Look at all these emails. They keep coming in. Yeah, we just keep getting emails and testimonials. And you guys fit in well, I guess, because we like to deal with companies that treat the dumb zone. We do collectively, but I was thinking about this last night, too. I almost don't like Plum Quick or Community Mechanic.
Starting point is 01:44:18 mechanical or qualus because I like to be treated special. Yeah. Like I want priority scheduling. And they're like, well, no, all you got to do is sign up for what is the year-long thing called? The plumbing home membership. Okay. You're like, sign up for that. You get priority scheduling.
Starting point is 01:44:36 Like, I want that because I'm so famous. Maybe they have something you can pay more for. Yeah. Just keep asking. Yeah, I want to drive in the HOV layer, you know. I want to go. I want to do things that other. people aren't getting.
Starting point is 01:44:49 But I do think that's what the dumb zone listener can get now, too. Yeah, definitely. Is the priority treatment. But, yeah, like Jake was just showing you the list. We're going to emails, texts every day about just how great you guys are and how you kind of go above and beyond and how the name kind of fits. Oh, man, I got a problem right now. Let's get here now.
Starting point is 01:45:10 Like, we need you. This afternoon, yeah. Yeah, we get texts from the guys and they're like, I didn't think you're going to call me right away. I'm like, yeah, we're going to call you right away. Dan, if you call me, I'll get your priority scheduling, okay? People would want to know that. I think the average listener would want to know that you actually, Dan, could be treated better. But outside of that, everyone treated pretty well. Okay. So if some listener, if drop Beth says, hey, she texts you at 3 o'clock, and she's like, I got an issue, I text you at 315. Will you go to my house first?
Starting point is 01:45:44 Yes. Okay. See? Yeah. No, I think Beth would want that. I will. I don't know if Beth would want that. She looks mad right now. So, okay. Anyway, how do we get a hold of Plum Quick? Plum quick, go ahead. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:45:57 How do you get a hold of those? Yeah, number on the screen? Yeah. 469, 331, 3659. Did you have to look at the screen to know that? Yes, I did. Because that's a special number. I actually do.
Starting point is 01:46:06 Yes, it's a special number just for DumbZone customers. So I actually don't have that one memorized. Okay. So. But plumquick company.com. We got that. Yeah, so you can call that number. You can text that number.
Starting point is 01:46:20 You can even go on to our website. We also have online scheduling if you don't want to have to talk to anybody. There you go, Dan. You can do, we make it as easy as possible to book us. Nice. Plumquick Company.com. It's going to be a big camp. And yeah, you're the title sponsor for training camp.
Starting point is 01:46:36 We will be heading out there next Wednesday. We are heading out. We'll do shows next Thursday and Friday and then the whole next week. we were going to do just the last week. And Blake's like, well, I like being there on the weekend. Yeah. I remember when... Took a guy getting a new baby for us to be like, I wonder if we could ask.
Starting point is 01:46:55 But when we worked for the radio station, we would be like, hey, it's really fun to stay on the weekend. And they'd be like, no. No. And so this is one of the benefits, I guess, to having our own thing. There's many benefits, but one of them is, hey, wait, there was no real logical. It would cost a little more. money, right? But otherwise, why wouldn't...
Starting point is 01:47:17 Good for the show. Yeah. So, yeah, Blake gets what he wants. He wants to be out there for the weekend. We're going to be out there for the weekend. Not forgetting, I got to go to Seattle for the Cowboys game, so I won't really have a weekend. You set us up, though. You all have fun.
Starting point is 01:47:30 That's how Jesus was. That's right. I got to go. I got to go. Get to be with Steve Berlin. The Brewers are going to be in L.A. We got a lot going on. No, I know.
Starting point is 01:47:39 Like, Robert, what would you give to be with Steve Burline for a whole? whole weekend. Wouldn't that be great? A few words. Go ahead. Yeah, take 10 or 15 minutes and just talk about Steve Berlin. Just all the Steve Verline memories we've all built up. Are you an Eagles fan? Vermont, I feel like Lee's... I was actually born in Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. But I actually grew up as a Dallas fan, a Cowboys fan. That happens a lot up there.
Starting point is 01:48:08 You grew up in Philadelphia? Yes. So you're fired up about LeBron? Actually, yes. Yeah. But I just love LeBron. Yeah. I mean, anywhere he goes, I'm like, now I'm that team's fan. This is your guy. I know I like Robert for some reason.
Starting point is 01:48:20 I'm just definitely like the bandwagon fan with him. Okay. I like, yeah. Yeah, this is working out well. Yeah, I like Robert even more. Hey, Robert, everybody from Club. Well, thank you for, thanks for sending us to training camp, all right? Yeah, you guys are welcome.
Starting point is 01:48:35 I got you hats and stuff, too, by the way. So wear the hats of training camp and get all that gear for you guys. Oh, yes. I think I got some purple shirts. I'm in on the shirt. There you go. I knew that. So, yeah, I'll leave this here with you guys.
Starting point is 01:48:47 Okay. Okay. Thanks, Robert. Thank you so much. Everybody call Robert. Put it in your phone. There's a plum quick. And let's do the news.
Starting point is 01:48:56 Here's Jane with the dumb zone news. Did I put the photo in there, Clayton, of what's going on in the room next door? Yes. The plum zone. Wait. What if they change their name to Plum Zone plumbing? You know, you could probably pitch. him on it.
Starting point is 01:49:15 Or we change our name to dumb quick. We'll work on it. Victim died overnight in Dallas. What? Sad way to start the news? It's the news. People die. But there's a fun angle. That's why it's in the news.
Starting point is 01:49:33 The fun angle is that this person was shot in their car and then drove into a lake. Do you guys know there's a lake in Dallas called a fish trap lake? I definitely would not move there where I. a fish. It feels like they just call it fish. So there's a lake and fish trap lake. You just get shot. That's what I think people don't think about. You see it sometimes
Starting point is 01:49:58 in TV shows, but the person who's driving who gets shot then wrecks the vehicle. I feel like that's oftentimes probably what kills you more than the getting shot. In this case, the person drove into a lake. Tough luck.
Starting point is 01:50:16 Yeah. You know, there's lake in my neighborhood where somebody drove in and died remember that a few years ago i didn't know somebody drove in and died you don't remember the it was like a there was a suit against one of the auto manufacturers was it toyota i didn't want to just throw that out there not knowing if that's true or not but t c c doesn't give a shit yeah uh like the break stop would stop working or something and uh yeah they ended up just going down it was um what's that road called lonesome dove and this went right into that pond.
Starting point is 01:50:51 My wife was at the stop sign and saw it and saw the people die. Wow. Like four people died in that vehicle. But I was thinking, as I was walking the neighborhood the other day and looking at that pond and thinking about the fact that somebody drove in there and four people got fished out, like, couldn't you just steered around the pond? Couldn't you have, I don't know. Like, if I ever start driving and there's no, and the brakes go out, how old was the person?
Starting point is 01:51:16 Would you think I should go into the pond? because that's a soft landing? Because you don't want to drive right into the tree. No, you don't want to be in the pond. I'm doing just about everything. I think I might take tree. Like if I could clip the tree. You're thinking that now, but if you're just driving
Starting point is 01:51:32 and you hadn't thought of it ahead of time before, would you think, wow, the water's soft? Like, I'm just wondering how do people drive into ponds and die, like you have here? Yeah, well, this person got shot, so they were really not in control of the vehicle. It was not an elective decision. All right.
Starting point is 01:51:53 Yeah, that's a good point. Sometimes you don't. Texas tax-free weekend. Now, this is probably on the list of things I thought was going to be a bigger deal when I was growing up, but it might have just mean that we were a little closer to being broke, but this was a huge deal when I was growing up. Like, we're going to the mall, bro. Does this count for property taxes?
Starting point is 01:52:16 I don't think so. out of that. I really, I don't. But it's, uh, you get it from Friday to Sunday and you just don't pay the six and a quarter sales tax on, they say back to school essentials, but for me it meant it's shoe ton. That's a back to school essential. Sort of.
Starting point is 01:52:36 I mean, I would say pencil has a better chance of. So it's this weekend? Yeah. Is this different than the Amazon prime weekend? I feel like Prime Day comes around about as often as the WNBA drafts. Because that sucks me in. Like, I'm like, wow, really? Because it'll show me something I usually buy, like, whatever drink or something.
Starting point is 01:52:59 And it'll be like, oh, wow, I actually can save like $8. And I'll order it even though I don't need it. They sucker me. Dude, I hate that I do. Because I do that and then I go to the gas station. And while I'm there, I'm like, I'll just buy a bottle of water, which is $3. Which is as much as the $1. the 24 pack, yeah.
Starting point is 01:53:15 And I say any savings I got from these other little games I ran are right out the door. Why even try? Yeah. That's the message here on the dumb zone today. I fed the family the other night for 15 bucks at McDonald's due to deals and whatever. But then we wanted ice cream. Listen to this guy. Four people?
Starting point is 01:53:38 The chains move. 15 bucks? Blake's under center. Three. All right. Three with kid and a half. But then ice cream. 16 bucks.
Starting point is 01:53:47 So yeah. You just ride back to square one. You don't live near a Brahms, do you? No. If I didn't, I would probably move. It's a value that they're just, you don't even, the ice cream for kids prices is crazy. I want to help the hole in the wall business that's making ice cream for the community.
Starting point is 01:54:06 But then they want six bucks for a cup, and then you got to tip the 16-year-old back there. Oh. Or they'll spit in it. Hey, you should learn about Brahms. I think that's one you'd be really into on your journey of learning about companies and how they all work, like how Brahms is able to do it. It's in Oklahoma. They got like A farm.
Starting point is 01:54:25 There's probably a bunch of people in here that know all this. But I recently, what is it? And it's the A, whatever. Yeah, they have a, they've had this herd forever. Because I started buying my milk there because it's cheap and, you know, get a little snack while I'm there. Dan, do you know... Hey, I got to interrupt real quick to answer an email. Where are we going to be in the stadium?
Starting point is 01:54:49 I'll be on the mound, I think, is what they call it. No, but I mean, you know, this goes back to... Listen, I'm about to... Henry on social media, just telling people come by Arlington and find us. 204. Section 204. All right. Let's put that out there, Henry.
Starting point is 01:55:07 Section 204. I am due to be cut down to size. out there so why not just keep making cocky statements oh yeah dude you're gonna um you're gonna be great so do you know do you guys know who k granger is slash was k granger i know you do clay granger she was a uh congress person okay i was thinking realty no she was in the uh the house the u s house um she was in from 97 to 2025 and she's from Greenville, but she grew up or lived near where I lived when I grew up. There's an elementary school there named after her mom, I think.
Starting point is 01:55:55 Is it Kay Granger Hutchinson? No, that's Kay Bailey Hutchinson, which is a different person, but commonly confused. All right. Can I give you a random Ed Wallace story? I bet he had some. He would always do the Fort Worth car show that would come by, but he would never do the Dallas one because they held it at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Center. And he said that he never wanted to say that he was inside Kay Bailey Hutchinson,
Starting point is 01:56:23 so he would never do the Dallas Car Show. That's a good bit. There had to be something else going on because there's a lot of car shows there. So Kay Granger recently passed away. And I bring this up to you. She was like a, I don't know, like borderline real life Aaron Brockovich, like she in her maybe 20s or early 30s organized a bunch of people to protest like some zoning thing in Fort Worth. And they were like, you should run for office. And she was in Congress for the rest of her life.
Starting point is 01:56:59 So she was a community organizer, popular person. I brought this up to my mom the other day who is, uh, I. I guess, would it be 25-ish years younger. And immediately my mom went to the gossip of who she was hooking up with after she got divorced. Like, it was a relatively small town. And I'm thinking, my mom is so old. And this woman was in Congress for so long.
Starting point is 01:57:26 Do you ever think of, like, when you're going to see somebody and stop thinking about what they did when they were, like, 15? Or when you were 15? Well, I mean, like, when you're trying to, whatever, the guy in, Maine or whatever. You know, they're looking up stuff from when you were that age, right? And if you did something wrong, then you're like, I don't think he should run. Yeah, but that's like, you know, unsavory things.
Starting point is 01:57:48 She was just like, I just remember when she divorced her husband and the rumors of who she was running around. Okay, so it had nothing based in fact. No, anyway, it wasn't, and it wasn't illegal. It wasn't, you know. And she was divorced. Right. It's like, oh, I had I remember that.
Starting point is 01:58:01 Poor. No, seriously, I left her. I was just like, listen, I can't help you guys. You do it to yourselves, WNBA. let's see here oh erath county Blake what do you got for me there not much
Starting point is 01:58:18 nobody in here wants to help this is not how you want to be found if you're an escaped inmate by the canines this dude escaped yesterday morning using he's in jail on a felony probation violation so whatever a bullshit charge but so he's out for a day
Starting point is 01:58:40 I mean, the cops posted a photo of this dude. It's the cop, the dog, and the guy, just in shorts and no shirt. Like, he's in the woods hiding, and the dog. The dog, I guess, is... You don't want to be caught with no shirt. They train the dogs on, like, the scent of the inmates' clothes. Piece of clothing, yeah. Yeah, so that's the...
Starting point is 01:59:03 I've seen movies. Yeah, I guess that's true. I just don't really... I think of dogs only... I think of drugs and bombs. before I think of humans. But, dude, you're out in the country and you get caught by some small town Texas deputy
Starting point is 01:59:20 and his freaking German Shepherd. Seems unfair to use the dog. You know? Is there a chance the dog can find them and be like, hey, come get him? Because I feel like every time the dog's payoff is he gets to violently attack the suspect. Should you carry dog treats
Starting point is 01:59:37 if you are escaping prison? I like that. Yeah. I like where your head's at there. And let's see. I know I had one more that I wanted to do for sure. Oh, sorry. I was just watching President Bush's 9-11 pitch over here.
Starting point is 01:59:56 How do you do? Oh, you're watching other first pitches? I was watching this one in particular to see if I could get some of the... He nailed it, right? Absolute. Piked it. Of course. Nothing but Mitt.
Starting point is 02:00:08 I would think he's probably... Well, I guess his dad played baseball. Yale, right? I was going to say, I think the younger one played some level of baseball. Yeah. I thought it was the senior. Maybe it was the younger, I'm thinking.
Starting point is 02:00:24 But, yeah, best baseball playing president? I'm going to just go with that Bush. Probably. One of the bushes. Probably, but like back in the day, there was really only baseball, right? So you have to figure that some of it was. Yeah, like Howard Taft or something.
Starting point is 02:00:46 Right. Did you ever go to Dion's Mansion and Prosper? Joe Buy it. Was that when you guys were friends still? It was probably before I ever knew him. He had like these huge gates that said prime time on it. And then it's like, people don't respect my privacy. Yeah. I remember when he built it. It was a big deal around here. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 02:01:12 He moved in 2014. It's been sold again. But when I see this house, I think it was on cribs or something, right? Somewhere, because he's on the golf cart. And he's got, like, the bling, like, pimped out golf cart. And he's like driving it through his house. Yeah, that's how big is. And it just felt. Like his closet is as big as my house.
Starting point is 02:01:31 Yes. Yeah. How much is it? How much is it? I didn't accidentally run into $5 million. Actually, it sold at 4.9. It was listed at 5.5. He sold it, I think, for 4.5.
Starting point is 02:01:45 back then. So some appreciate it. But I... Didn't this also accidentally run us into an accidental racism at like ticket stock or something? I said something to him like, was it 50 cent riding a segue through Dion's closet? Which is like remarkably close to the story that Dion is a part of. And he's like, I can't believe you would ever... It was like Floyd Mayweather.
Starting point is 02:02:11 It was just a... I got the wrong guy. And yes, he accused me of... being racist, but, you know, I couldn't totally deny it. True. Two-lane bowling alley, barbershop, pool, fitness center, theater room, indoor basketball court. Do you ever use any of that? Two-lane bowling alley.
Starting point is 02:02:30 I would use that all the time. Like, I grew up wanting, like, a big arcade machine in my house. Yeah. And then maybe a pinball machine. I used to play this one. all the time around college age. Theater of magic. Look it up.
Starting point is 02:02:50 Great pinball machine. And I even looked it up. Sounds like a pussy magnet. That's the thing. And then you realize, would I want a giant pinball machine sitting in here? But I do still to this day say I would love a bowling alley in my house. I think that's one I would actually get you set of.
Starting point is 02:03:11 You could see doing it with your kids every day. right because remember when we went bowling with Blake and he's like oh yeah I bowled 200 all the time they didn't even get 100 didn't say that oh man you have no idea didn't say that he was so embarrassed might as well been rolling balls on concrete for what it's worth but the truth is as we as I stared down give me a real lane this first pitch no somebody else's a guy like complaining about his minor league park yeah I'm sure that's what it was but as a guy who's got to go out there and do this today that actually was a very important piece of my mental development seeing him fail, because it was bad.
Starting point is 02:03:47 The failure athletically that he authored that day, I thought, there's nothing worse this year coming for the Dumbzone. By the third game, I had it somewhat figured out. By the third game, you had a third digit on your score. That's right. There's your news. You play it. You thought you hit it, and you thought you had a walk-up.
Starting point is 02:04:06 I thought I did. There are many people who have to control these things. Like answers. Since the day he called for making the change, how many have been right? Zero. And they're all still better than it was before. That's the thing. But you know it's always right, fairlease.org.
Starting point is 02:04:29 So true. That'll bring us today's view of mail birthdays. Fairlease.org. They recently hooked up Brandon Aubrey with a vehicle. That's right. They've worked with a bunch of our advertisers, community mechanical, of a high note, has a few of their trucks over there, maybe even four or four. trucks there now. So they're great with the business. When it came to community, they had
Starting point is 02:04:51 already had a couple trucks under lease with D&M. And they said, so we'll let this lease run out. And then we might hook up with you. And they said, well, let's look at that lease. And they could get such a better deal. They bought them out of that lease. The better deal have to do with the fact that they work with the credit union of Texas, I believe? I believe it does. They'll tell you all about it and how they can work with you fairly regardless of your situation, find a vehicle and a deal that works for you at 972-705-48-15. Connor and Nick are dumb zone liaisons. Let's see here.
Starting point is 02:05:30 Only one pure male birthday today. I have, hi, Dan. I'd like to wish my buddy Ryan. Happy Dirk birthday. This is Ryan the husband of Liz the lawyer. Oh, hell yeah. power couple. We know Liz the lawyer very well.
Starting point is 02:05:50 She's great. My birthday is tomorrow. I think it's today. Since that is the plan, we plan on entering the Chinese D-Trap together at 1159 and try to separate at midnight, as Jake suggested last year.
Starting point is 02:06:09 Did you say that to them? That's terrible. I don't know, but I have long loved the idea of the Chinese dick There's only one way out. You've long loved the idea. In. His leaders are the IJB Courage Boys, attorney-client privilege,
Starting point is 02:06:27 Big Daddy Cody Campbell, and the future Thorpe Award winner, Texas Tech Commit, Gideon Gash. More, everyone, crank that hog on overdrive, establish the punt. This is from your day two, D.F. founding member of the Dumb Zone Southeast Asian fan club, Thailand branch. Patat. Patat is from Thailand? It's so specific.
Starting point is 02:06:57 I love it. All right. Flooring Direct's DFW presents on this day in history. Let me quickly tell you how to get in touch with Flooring Direct DFW because they are greatness. We're getting new floors right now. Starting point is 02:08:33 Excellent. We have today in history, so it's Wednesday, August 5th, and everybody, did you know, today is the birthday of Jake. Happy birthday to Jake. Thank you all so much. Throwing out the first pitch on his birthday, and I got you a little gift. I know you didn't want me to do this in front of everybody. You shouldn't have. Your presence is a presence enough.
Starting point is 02:08:58 Here it is. It's your wallet. Where was it? At the den. He left it at my house. Texted me like late last night. Very, the meekest text I've ever had from Jake. It was like, you know I don't want to be sent.
Starting point is 02:09:16 this right now. But I'm just going to say it. And I'm like, oh, what is this? I mean, he's... I've relapsed. Yeah, is he in the bottle of a bottle? No, he's a... Is my wallet over by my chair?
Starting point is 02:09:30 Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then it was over by the chair. Huh? Still never lost. No losses. No wells over here on the wallet. No, but I made sure not to give it to you at the beginning of the show
Starting point is 02:09:39 so that it would stay safe in my bag. Right. Because Jake would have been like, oh, thanks, dude, and thrown it over here. Yeah. Yeah, thank you. Happy birthday. Will you leave it on the mound? I'm playing the air tag sound. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ling, ling, ling.
Starting point is 02:10:02 All right, it's August 5th, this day in 1961. Six Flags opens. Official grand opening of Six Flags over Texas. They've probably been there a lot or wherever they, did the mounts is leave? Oh, they might have. Dominic Robinson is immediately who I think of when I think of. Six Flags now. I also think of T.C. Because I heard him talking about the other day when you guys got back from Galveston,
Starting point is 02:10:26 he went straight to Six Flags. I'm like, holy. What a baller, man. Like, no way. I need buffer days. I can't believe you guys just do all. But having a kid with you is a, that's what I was amazed by it. And then went right to Six Flags.
Starting point is 02:10:39 You know, but the kid having that kind of, my kids get worn out, man. My kids are soft. They must be soft, but they'll just straight up be like, Can I get a day? We just don't do anything? And I'm like, no. You know, you see that woman you came out of? On this day in 1962, this is why we had Jared on today.
Starting point is 02:10:59 South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela arrested on charges of leaving the country without a passport and inciting workers to strike. It was probably more that. Yeah. It was the beginning of 27 years of imprisonment. Jared is South African. He is. He is. Was he born in South Africa? No, I don't think so.
Starting point is 02:11:24 But I told you the other day I was listening to a great George Carlin bit on the term African-American and the problems with it. He's like, oh, how about this white guy from South Africa who moves here? No, not you, dummy. On this day in 1964, Navy pilot Everett Alvarez Jr. was the first American shot down and captured in North Vietnam. So this is 1964. He would be held until February 1973. God bless, man. My heroes don't get caught.
Starting point is 02:12:00 I know. Picasso just free that whole time. Walking around. On this day in 2014, tell your daughter that the Spurs hired Becky Hammond as an assistant coach, first woman joining an NBA coaching staff. On this day in 2019, I'd never heard of this guy before this morning looking this up. Brazilian drug dealer, Clavino de Silva. You ever heard of that name?
Starting point is 02:12:25 I thought that was a UFC fighter. Well, he was a Brazilian drug dealer in 2019. Bad branding then. Right? Because all these other guys, we know they're cool names. El Chapo. He had previously escaped from prison in 2013. He's in prison.
Starting point is 02:12:44 in 2019. He previously had escaped from a prison through a sewer system. He had watched Shawshank and he's like, whoa. This time he's tried to escape from prison, but he was caught. He dressed up. His teenage daughter came to visit him.
Starting point is 02:13:02 And so he put on, like, then she stayed in his cell and he put on a silicone mask and a wig and tried to get out. Excellent. But he got caught. Two days later, They're like, ah, we found him, he hung himself. Oh, do you think he actually did?
Starting point is 02:13:23 Do you? No, I don't. And this is potentially offensive, but you know, like when you watch Spanish, particularly like Mexican TV, like Sabato O'Higante, shows like that, they love costumes, like even more than American variety shows do. And it occurs to me that all of these, like, drug lord escapes in Latin, in America always have some very funny costume element to it. Like, they love that.
Starting point is 02:13:51 That's a lot. A wig, a silicone mask, like you're dressing up as a lady or something. There's always this weird theatrical element to all their escapes. I don't think we get. Any means to the end, though. That's why we don't get as many escapes. Probably so. I mean, they, what?
Starting point is 02:14:08 Plus, it's not legal to, if you dressed up like that here, you'd just add to your charges. Right. Yeah. And on this day in 2023, it was the Montgomery Brawl. Montgomery. A large-scale altercation at the riverfront dock in downtown Montgomery, Alabama. The incident gained significant media attention due to its violent nature, the racial undertones. It was not good.
Starting point is 02:14:33 And Montgomery's racially charged history. One famous wedding on this date in 2010, Jennifer Aniston from the Morning Show and friends. Mary Justin Thoreau. and his giant hog. His hog was the best man. Yeah, but he's five-nine. August 5th. Right, his hog is the same size as mine.
Starting point is 02:14:54 He's just so short. August 5th, this day in Dumb Zone history. For Jake's birthday in 2020, we booked his high school football coach, John Speed. I think about that a lot, man. Is that we lost? No. No, no. That's my buddy, who will be there today.
Starting point is 02:15:09 We lost guy. He said Jake always worked hard, loved hitting. and loved getting hit. That was interesting. Yeah, I was an angry young man. Football was an outlet. On this day in 2021, you were able to shave your beard. God, man.
Starting point is 02:15:25 You grew it for 175 days. Bob let you out of it because you eventually did watch boyhood. That's convoluted ass bit. God. You also said on this day that you want to bring your tiny, pants whenever you get fat. Oh, yeah. You always see the inverse.
Starting point is 02:15:48 Here are my big pants. How about a fat guy with small pants? Yeah, that's what I used to live. That's what I was getting bigger. Okay, like Billy Bob. Right. And then this day in 2024, we did a show from the RV. We were headed out to training camp.
Starting point is 02:16:01 Now look at us. We got a sponsor and a plane ride. Plumbing. Dan fell in love with the sandwich artist and Flagstaff. At Soroy's sandwich shop that he worked in college crystals i think right she was great that place is awesome i wonder if she thinks about me too there's no doubt yeah waiting for you to walk through that door yeah god man those i did she's doing that on her show right now i feel like they should uh there should be a warning to all the gas station
Starting point is 02:16:31 ladies and vons attendees little big macs coming to town like not a warning just so they can kind of get ready spruce up maybe lose a few pounds before i get there get the good perfume for the shift at Vaughans. And then you played something on the show a couple years ago in 2024. Nora, your daughter, had begun like talking in ways where
Starting point is 02:16:56 she was signing off on like a YouTube stream or something. This is the day that we got to sign up? This is the day we played it. Here it is in full. Thank you for watching my video. Subscribe and type for my name if you want to watch more of my video.
Starting point is 02:17:10 Bye. Donka. That's it. She'll hit you a little Did a little dunka, huh? Yeah, yeah. Danka. Now, I think about, like, I love that at the end of the show.
Starting point is 02:17:23 Me too. And it's like anything else, if you guys said, I hate it, we're moving it all. I wouldn't complain about it, but I like that it's there. It makes you feel good. The older she gets, the more you'll be sad about it, probably. Yeah, no, I'm a handful, hopefully a large one away from having to buy a whistle. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Times are sweet still.
Starting point is 02:17:44 time. Other birthdays today, we have Everett McIver, 56. Got stabbed in the neck. Bruce Coslet is 80. Cowboys. He was the Cowboys OC, and it was the last year of Campo. Okay. Wow.
Starting point is 02:18:08 God, the NFL used to have some just terrible, terrible ideas. Boring as shit. Patrick Ewing is 64. C.J. Spiller is 39. That is the current Clemson running back coach. Ava says, great guy. Okay. I like hearing that.
Starting point is 02:18:26 I like hearing that. I was going to say that seems like a thing that's happening more now, but it's probably always happened forever. Just star at a school goes back and position coach. DeMarco Murray I saw was the one that made me think of this first, but it seems common. Anthony Edwards is 25. Oh, who did I see the other day?
Starting point is 02:18:44 Patrick Creighton or something. was coaching. Anthony Edwards. 1-1. John Olerud is 58. Batting helmet in the field. Yeah. Mark Mulder is 49
Starting point is 02:18:58 of Mulder, Zito, and Hudson. And that's the order for their war. Hudson was the good one. Carl Crawford is 45. Filmmaker James Gunn is 59. He used to be married to Jenna Fisher. You know what she was in? She's probably in a commercial.
Starting point is 02:19:16 about how she used to play Pam in the office. Maureen McCormick is 70. That's Marcia from the Brady Bunch. You ever watch The Brady Bunch? No. Are you aware of the Brady Bunch? Yeah. What it is in pop culture.
Starting point is 02:19:31 Am I missing out? I don't know. It's been some time. It's hornyer than you remember. Oh, yeah? All those shows to me when I watch them. I'm like, God bless, man. But that actually goes all the way through,
Starting point is 02:19:43 like if you watch How I Met Your Mother or Big Bang Theory, every 12 words they're hitting you with some sort of innuendo more than you think I think and I'll give you
Starting point is 02:19:54 Jonathan Silverman is 60 from Weekend at Bernies is that Sarah Silverman's brother no one really knows and Reid Hoffman is 59 he is the founder
Starting point is 02:20:04 of LinkedIn you always tell me how great LinkedIn is Jake to make business connections I don't even know how to respond

Starting point is 02:20:34 when you just have a culture like, you're the elephant man? Who's the guy that can't talk? All right, you're dummy. I think it probably is the low point because you'd introduced commercialization. Like, the elephant man existed before, and people were like, we just couldn't make money off them?
Starting point is 02:20:53 Right, but once you're like, how about we charge to laugh at you? To look at them. That's a different level. Dead on the Stay Still Dead. You got Paul Brown. Alec Guinness, that was Obi-Wan Kenobi. And Chick Hearn, he was the Lakers play-by-play guy. Oh, also Charlotte Ray.
Starting point is 02:21:13 That was Mrs. Garrett on different strokes. Do you know what different strokes was? Yeah. Gary Coleman? That's right. What was his famous thing? What are you talking about, Willis? That's right. And that's what happened on this day in history.
