Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a podcast from Rover. Well, it feels like the olden days all kind of being on a computer with different screens and figuring out if we could all hear each other and see each other. But we've bloody well done it. And I'm very excited to have representatives of both Hilltop Hoods and 660. Safa, Mathieu, welcome boys. Thank you. Good to be here.
Starting point is 00:00:23 So this song was written years ago. I'm here. I am thinking that a couple of months ago, by chance you guys were hanging out and no, this is years in the making. So was it an organically done thing or were you on some sort of a writing camp or was the first the first seed of never coming home? Um, I can start bro, if you want man. You go, man. We're not used to being interviewed together. So I'll use names. I'll use names and point from now on.
Starting point is 00:00:54 Yeah. Cause we will be really polite. Otherwise. It was as, as natural and organic as you could hope for. Um, we had, you know, we had a mutual respect and admiration for what each other had done and we had an opportunity to find ourselves in Adelaide and we caught up for a coffee and had some lunch and chopped it up and we heard it off. Next we were in Matt's house in the studio writing songs. Adelaide is the like untapped, like jewel of Australia and people in Adelaide are
Starting point is 00:01:30 ruled like they're locked down on Adelaide. They don't talk it up. They let people bag out Adelaide because they're like, yeah, because we don't want you dickheads moving here. Adelaide is where it's at. So it makes me very happy that that's kind of, um, where it all started. And really when I think about it, I feel like Hilltop Hoods to Australia are kind of what 660 are to Alte Aroha. Like there's a real
Starting point is 00:01:51 ownership here and back home over kind of the two bands. Does that Matt, does that kind of feel like it makes sense to you? 100%. Like I had seen them play before and I loved it. And I knew part of their story. But because I was in New Zealand, I didn't know just how big they were until I watched their documentary. And I was like, holy heck, these guys are massive. And like, yeah, there was a lot of parallels to like their journey and our journey, even to the point where we were living together as well. And so it was really funny. And, you know, just like Mathieu, I was an amazing sportsman as well.
Starting point is 00:02:50 But yeah, so like it made sense for us to connect because we've always had a strong connection to New Zealand. And so, yeah, connecting with them made sense. And the chemistry was really good. Like, yeah, it was like people we'd grown up with. So, yeah, because I imagine that sometimes the chemistry isn't good. Like you can have a lot in common and you see them in a gig and you feel a vibe.
Starting point is 00:03:19 You know, this is awesome. But it's a very different thing to sit down in a studio or something more informal and try to kind of like put your heads together and make music. Machu, did it happen quickly like when you sat down to do this? Was it a struggle or did you feel like the song just kind of appeared? No, you know, to a point like it's actually pretty rare to find people that you can connect with so easily like this. It's's like, we were like fortunate enough to have a studio close and like get in there. And I don't, my memory of it was a few years ago now,
Starting point is 00:03:50 but I don't remember it. I actually don't remember writing. Cool. I remember hanging out and laughing. Do you know what I mean? It's like, I remember being together and it being really fun. And those are the situations where you
Starting point is 00:04:08 write the best stuff, I think. Yeah. It's so cool now, like, finally to, it's great when songs, we can share songs with the world that came out of such a, like, I don't know, just a natural and fun environment. Yeah, that's so nice.
Starting point is 00:04:28 And we were three of them. Yeah. Yeah. And they all ended up on the album. But what do you do with that? Like when you've got three songs together, do you then have to like sit down like a divorce and like divide them up and be like,
Starting point is 00:04:40 okay, well you can put that on your album, we want that. How do you do that? Or will you just like, they're all gonna be hilltop, you can put that on your album. We want that. How do you do that? Or will you just say they're all going to be Hilltop featuring you guys and going on our album. It happened in our studio and out to suck it. Well, we, we invited them to write on our album. Like that's, that's what we were doing at the time. And, um, they had their own stuff that they were doing at the time.
Starting point is 00:05:00 And they, they came over, um, and their work ethic, even though like Matthew said, it was like really natural, the work ethics, like, really that's people that still love writing music. And like you said, like often writing rooms and that can be trash because there's people there that just, you know, they're just there. It's like worse than a bad date because you can walk out on a date in like, you can just be like, have a drink and be like, cool, I've got to be somewhere. You there's no way you can't leave after five minutes of a writing session. I don't think you know why it's worse than a bad day because like a bad day won't get a percentage of your earnings.
Starting point is 00:05:45 They're done. You never have to hear from them again. Good point. So who decided to kind of, because the UFC parallel in the video, it makes sense because this song is about grit and hard work and determination and working and discipline, which is something that so often people associate with professional sport, but they don't associate with music, but there is so much discipline associated with being a career musician. Where did you, who decided to kind of have the physical fighting aspect for the visual component? That was our director, it was another director's idea, Bill's first, but our director, Jeremy Grey Ghost, he saw the parallels between the journeys of a fighter and the journeys of a upcoming musician
Starting point is 00:06:33 and sort of threw those together and through mutual friends, we were able to bring in Valk into the clip, which was huge for all of us. I know I was standing with Matthew when we met him and we were both fan boys, big time. He's a, yeah, he's an absolute legend. So yeah, it was our director scene,
Starting point is 00:06:58 but it made so much sense. And we ended up bringing in a lot of people that we knew from the Juj-Jitsu and MMA community, which was made it really special. Sick. And not that like you boys are fighters, as in like brawlers, but if there was a situation where it's going to be 660 V Hilltop in a street fight or a cage fight, who's taking it out?
Starting point is 00:07:23 Who is your money on? They've got the numbers. That's true. So what if we just choose three though? Like if you just choose your best three fighters. Um, I don't know. I might give, um, Vulcan honorary membership in the woods. Just a six month sort of.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Love it. Well, boys, we're so glad that you got together to make this track. It's a gorgeous track and we're very happy to be spinning it on air. Thank you so much for making time and good luck with the tour, boys. And we love you and take care. Thank you. Thank you, Ash. Bye, guys.
