This is a podcast from Rover.
If you've ever sent a risky text and then thrown your phone across the room, you'll fit right in here.
This is the Clint Megendan Podcast.
As the nation slowly wakes up from their slumber,
these three have been awake for hours.
Crafting their finest content.
Preparing the latest in music and celeb news.
Restocking the prize cupboard and sharpening their wit.
And now they're ready.
Put down your coffee,
fasten your seatbelt
and turn up your radio.
Because it's time for Clint, Meg and Dan.
Good morning.
It's one to six on your Thursday.
Yeah, Thursday.
Now today's the day that Clint thought it was yesterday.
I know.
So now you should be happy.
And I thank God I got another day.
My bloody wife this morning,
I saw a study that those that kiss their partners,
goodbye every morning, live four years longer.
I don't know, I'm doing all these things,
I'm gonna live till I'm 150.
And so I went to go kiss her,
and she's just lying there asleep.
Just as I went down to get her, she goes,
bleh!
Oh!
Oh, that'll wake you up.
Bitch.
That would have really made a day, I reckon, because she'd be like,
she's still thinking about that.
She's like, they got him so good.
I can't find my wife in the mornings,
like when I go in for a kiss,
because it's so pitch black dark in my room.
For some reason, we've got those blackout curtains,
and I end up kissing like her ear.
Oh, it's just a metaphor for Dan's like sex life.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I need a light on, I need a light on
when I do anything sexual. I don't know where to find anything, unless I I need a lighter, I'm gonna do anything sexual.
I don't know where to find anything unless I've got a bit of light.
Yeah, so I got a nice wake up this morning. I'm wide awake.
Good on you Clint.
Part of you is a little bit like proud of them because you're like, damn I wish I thought of that.
Yeah.
The other part has to be angry at them.
And now if you were to do it, now it's like, okay I did that like a week ago Clint.
Yeah, that was my thing.
Okay, funny. See you again. it now it's like okay I did that like a week ago Clint. Yeah that was my thing. Funny.
The Clint, Meg and Dan podcast.
Tomorrow is New Music Friday.
I love it. Okay. Sorry we weren't bringing the hype on that.
You really did. You must have done it completely blankly.
Do it again. do it again. Okay, ready?
Tomorrow is New Music Friday!
Woo!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
I feel like I overdid it.
Yeah, yeah, you have!
It's a big release day tomorrow.
Well, it's a release day where I feel like
it's got some things that could be really good
or could be really bad.
We've got Marley Cyrus' new song More To Lose.
She's released another little part of it that we can hear now that isn't a live performance.
I knew someday that one would have to choose.
I just thought we had four years.
Here we go.
Oh, that pisses me off.
That pisses me off.
Hey, it sounds good though, right?
I genuinely think that sounds better than the end of the world one that she releases her first single.
That makes me much more excited for my leg.
It sounds quite like a ballad kind of.
I'm actually really keen for that. sounds quite like a ballad kind of. I'm actually really keen for that.
I feel like a ballad. Something I don't know what it's going to sound like but we have Halsey.
Okay. You got a little clip of her there. This isn't her but she's on the song. Carly. With Benny Blanco.
She has a really amazing voice. Quite a distinctive voice. I'm surprised she hasn't been prevalent lately.
Well she's had a lot of management issues, a lot of manager and health issues, and she's
released I think two albums and we haven't played a single song from them on the edge.
But she was huge in the early 2000s, like the biggest star. And we've met her a couple
of times, if you guys have been able to meet her, she is very, very, very cool.
I met her once when I was working with another radio show.
Jodder Men? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And she was lovely.
Cool, right?
Yeah, but that was, I remember when she came in
and she was like on the precipice
of like being the biggest star on the planet.
And for some reason it didn't quite work out.
Maybe that was the management thing.
Yeah, she had a bad relationship with GZ.
That's right.
They wrote a song together about being together
for the rest of their lives.
And he had a line, it was like, maybe.
Do you remember the line in his song?
Oh, I said to Halsey.
It was like about being together for every friend,
then his line was like, I think I will.
Yeah, I think I wanna spend the rest of my life
with you type vibes.
It was so funny.
It was like, well, do you or not?
Which, yeah, of course they did it.
Every time I think Halsey, I just think of of her she was singing like part of your world as
Ariel when she's got the red wig on and uh it was like such a phenomenal vocal. Yeah she's an
amazing singer. So she is releasing a song with somebody it's Halsey and Amy Lee from Evanescence Tomorrow.
and Amy Lee from Evanescence Tomorrow. Ooh.
Wake me up inside
Wake me up, wake me up inside
I think it's gonna either be amazing or a flop.
Is obviously, that's in two ways, but.
Two great voices.
I don't know what Amy Lee's voice is like now.
She was around some very early 2000s, late 90s.
Yeah.
So I don't know, she's obviously still singing, but.
And Halsey has always been kind of more the kind of
punk emo princess rather than pure pop like Sabrina or something
So excited for that. So we've got Miley. We've got Horsey and Amy Lee and the other person is Tyler who we'll know from water
Interesting with the New Zealand music month this month. There's no Kiwi X putting out new music tomorrow
Oh, they probably will be I'm on an American website clear. Oh, right. He doesn't care about the Kiwis
He should have dropped a banger last week
They did, they did.
Interesting to see what, maybe LAB,
they'd churn out like banger after banger.
It was the pick of the week last week.
Maybe we'll do another Lorde single too.
You know how they release two or three
before the full album comes out?
I wonder if she'll release another one.
When flights are combination tickets
to see Lady Gaga live in Sydney,
listen for a Gaga song between nine and three,
then head to theedge.rova.nz to get in the draw.
Clint, Meg and Dan.
Oh my gosh.
Getting to know everyone that's an early listener of this show, one at a time,
and we have someone who has never called the show before, to decide to be brave today.
For the first time in forever.
Hello stranger, for the first time.
Good morning, Becca. Becca. Good morning. Welcome. Hello stranger, for the first time.
Good morning, Becca.
Hey, Becca.
Morning.
Welcome.
Becca's been listening since she was in primary school, Dan, but this is her first time calling.
Wow, shut up.
She's 20 years old.
Yes, yes.
Works in the after school program with a mastodemio.
She's a Gemini and she one time tripped over a curb and broke her foot.
And why now?
Why now?
I always love to know what made you call.
Apart from my son, Cole.
I'm just driving to work and I was like,
you know what, let's just give them a call now.
I love that view.
You must be in a season of being like,
I don't know, being optimistic
and saying yes to more things.
For you to listen since primary and call today,
I think it says you're in a cool place right now.
Yeah, probably, maybe.
And also, BK, it says you work at an after-school program,
you're very early if you're leaving to work now.
At least it was a night school. Yeah, we start at 7am.
Oh, so you do a before and after school program like a Kelly Club.
Oh, before and after school. Oh, I see.
Yeah. Is it Kelly Club?
Yeah. Oh, my kids love Kelly Club.
Oh, cool.
What are you doing in between?
So the kids will go off to school and then what do you do?
Oh stop, stop. No don't answer that.
That's going to be our question.
The other question I want to know is what are you giving the kids for breakfast?
Because the kids start at 7 and then they feed them pretty cool breakfasts.
Oh I was going to do a non-cool breakfast breakfast now you've kind of thrown me on that one.
Okay.
Well, Clint definitely has, by the way, Dan, a leg up on this.
His kids literally go to the program and he's saying let's ask them questions.
Callie, is that for rich kids?
No, no, I think it's just, I think it's pretty affordable.
It's like 20 bucks for them to like have the kids like after school up to like, what is it?
5.30 or something? Six o'clock Bekah? 6 o'clock. I got my first ever insult on my looks
when I was at after school program. What was it? What did they say? I said your hair looks like a
rat's tail. Brilliant. Well one of the tutors.... Okay, I'll go last because I maybe have an advantage.
No, you go first so that we can copy you.
Okay, I'm going to go pancakes.
Okay, I was not going to go pancakes.
No, pancakes is a cool, that's a hard one to make on Max
as well, unless you're getting them pre-made.
Or like pieclets, you know, we just heat them up.
Um, oh, it's a cold morning.
I'm going to go porridge,
but with lots of brown sugar and peaches, canned peaches.
Okay.
I'm gonna go a similar ilt to Clint,
but I'm gonna go a waffle.
Oh, very fancy.
Yeah, they're going waffles,
but like healthy waffles,
so instead of like maple syrup on them,
they're going like a...
Apple sauce?
Yeah, maybe like a strawberry or berry.
Compote?
Yeah, compote.
Oh, I've never heard the kids say that they've got that.
Oh, I had waffles and compote.
Yeah. They go, Come on. Yeah, come on. I've never heard the kids say that I have waffles and compote
What are the kids having for breakfast this morning?
Was gonna say cornflakes
What is I would say porridge is closest to that Yeah, probably Poro. Thank you, Megan. Thank you, Megan. She led the winners just before she got her answer.
Megan, what do you do when the kids go to school?
What's that downtime?
Do you just get a big break
or are you working out what you do for the rest of the week?
I go to uni.
Oh, so it's like a shift job.
That's actually quite a good job to do if you're at uni, right?
Because you sort of work both ends of the day.
And I imagine it's quite good money,
so you can have a free day.
That's great
yeah good and the kids actually like genuinely really love like you guys and
what they do like my kids talk about their Kelly Club teachers or whatever
you guess you want to call you guys yeah yeah like they really fizz you guys so I
think you can be like a really cool person a really cool adult and a really cool person, a really cool adult in a really impressionable kid's life.
Well good on you Bekah. Thanks for calling us through.
Yeah, it was so much fun.
We're gonna still yell the voucher and go spend in store at Zeeb Bekah.
Thanks for calling. You bloody call us any time. Save our number.
Alright, next on the show.
Dan thinks he has a special skill because he tried it once and nailed it.
That's the most Dan sentence I've ever heard.
Ever heard, yeah.
And all I need is three truck drivers on the line.
Because my superpower involves trucks.
It's like Dan keeps calling the Avengers
and they keep screening his calls.
The Clint, Meg and Dan podcast.
Dan's got a superpower.
He flexed it yesterday and was successful.
Morning mate.
Now let me guess just quickly before we go on,
he drives a Hilux.
Let me guess what sort of truck he's in.
I'm gonna go, it's either a Scania or a Kenworth.
It's a Kenworth.
Oh yes, come on!
And so it's a flatbed truck?
Yep, it'll be a flatbed truck with a crane mounted on it.
I'm going Hino.
Ooh, good guess actually, yeah.
Oh. Holy cow, how did you do that?
I'm three from three on guessing the make of truck.
We only got one from two.
Yeah, we couldn't find the other one,
but I swear I did.
I didn't even know how,
there were different types of trucks,
so I am impressed.
Yeah, good.
All right, and I'm always just going to impress Meg.
Yeah, exactly.
That's all, that's my only goal in life.
So we have three truckies on the phone, Daniel.
Okay.
Let's see how well you do, starting off with Harrison.
Hi, Harrison.
Morning, Harrison.
Get in, mate.
Hey, how are you?
Okay, now Dan, do you get a single question?
How does this game work?
Yeah, I just want to know what is the, I guess,
use of the truck?
What type of truck is it that you're driving?
Not the make, but like, is it a dump truck?
Is it that kind of thing?
Like, yeah, if he's like a logging,
if he does that logging and stuff, forestry.
I'm a stock truck driver.
Stock truck, oh, so you're like cattle and sheep and stuff?
Cattle, sheep, anything with four legs.
Okay, okay, so I reckon it's between three.
Where do you transport
them to? Anywhere in the North Island. There's a works, just farms. Oh you just move them around
to just like greener pastures so they can live like. Pretty much yeah. When one place is dry you
get them to another place. Now this is an interesting one stock trucks very big trucks articulated
and I think that it would be a choice between, I'd say, three types of truck.
We're going to go either it would be a Hino.
I'd probably go maybe Scania.
I've seen them a lot of times on the road as a stock truck.
And I'm going to probably just throw in.
Well, if you don't have a death.
Now, I think I'm going to lean towards Hino again for this one Harrison.
Oh so you just did a flex for no reason for the other two?
Yeah but I think you could give me half a point of the other two.
No! Lock one in! You're just saying all the trucks that existed then trying to get half
points.
Okay Hino, locking it in.
Um that is incorrect I'm sorry.
Oh no!
Was it the other one? Was it the other one?
What was it? What was it Harrison?
Um, I currently drive a Scania at the moment.
Oh I see, I knew it could have been, it's the first one I said!
It was the second one.
It was just a warm up, it was just a warm up.
Okay, it was a warm up, just flexing my powers.
Here we go, here we go, Russell, Russell.
He's rusty, but let's go.
Okay, what sort of work are you doing with this truck, Russell?
Um, I do cartonsiders so I'm transporting freight between warehouses and stores, pallets and stuff. Okay pallets. What I'm gonna
give you, can I give you a slight clue? Okay yeah yep. My slight clue is that over the last yesterday
and today you haven't mentioned the name of my truck.
Okay.
Okay.
Also probably maybe you keep thinking about it.
You don't know that.
Yeah, he doesn't even know it exists.
Well, Dan thinks about it.
I think it'd be a real missed opportunity
to not shout out my...
No, you'll know that it exists.
It's one of the most popular trucks on the road.
Shout out one of my father-in-law's business,
Curtainside Services.
For those who do have Curtin Side trucks,
yeah, hit up Steve. Yeah, I think Curtin Side trucks, so it's like a box truck, so you'd
fit stuff in the back of it. I'm going to lean towards it's a Mitsubishi.
No, no, we can do that. Oh my goodness, man. This is shocking. I'm actually embarrassed.
Oh my god, I've really talked a big game. Okay, um, Russell, what do you have?
It's an MAN. Oh man.
Bugger, oh, I would never have picked man.
Wow, this is kinda like Iron Man's
like testing out his new suit.
Everyone's come to watch and he can't fly.
But if I get one, that's a win.
Okay, so we're gonna go to Jessica finally.
Jessica, a female truck driver.
Come on, Jess.
Morning, Jess.
Hey.
Okay, so I reckon, so what sort of work are you
doing with your truck? Okay so I actually work for Fonterra collecting mould. Oh okay so it's one of
those tanker trucks. Mould? Yeah. This should be easy wouldn't they all just drive the same truck?
Yeah now. Actually people on the techs are doing better than you. Richard was like it's a man truck
just before we got the answer to Russell's. Did he get it first? Yeah. I'm pretty sure
Fonterra runs Volvo. A wreck? Yes! I got a win! Dan's reading the power still exists.
Dan's reading the text Meg. Look that one is a Volvo. Volvo Volvo. Oh that came through
after I guessed it. No it didn't. That came through at 6.49 and it's 6.50.
I seriously did not look at the text.
I've even got the cool logo.
That is still not impressive darling
because you got two wrong.
Yeah, I know.
So it's actually, if you're at uni,
you'd be repeating the paper.
You guys love seeing me fail, eh?
No, that is so wrong.
That's such a shame.
I literally said I can't wait to see this.
You can see in the audio, I was like, I'm so impressed.
Well, I think one's a win.
One's a win out of three.
If it was the other way round and I got one out of three,
you would be absolutely berating me.
I'd be proud of you.
I'd be proud of you, man.
Hey Harrison, we appreciate you playing.
I've just grabbed one of your random,
we're gonna send you our Mother Earth Nutty Sensations
prize pack, full flavour with Mother Earth Nutty Sensations.
We've got two large packs of nuts, chili and lime, maple and coconut, two dessert mixes,
three savoury packs and some tamari almonds as well for you bro.
Oh my god, they're so good. Harrison, they're honestly so good.
He's speechless, he's speechless.
He can't believe it.
At least someone's a winner.
Yeah.
Clint, Megan, Dan, let's go!
Three Buster decided to put together a band just to see how far 3 Friends without any musical experience can get.
MC DC is the name of our band.
Yes.
Sadly.
Meg pulled it out of the hat.
I didn't pick it though.
It was Clint's pick, Meg pulled it out of the hat.
So if anybody's fault it's not, it's me.
Nothing to do with that.
I mean, we had John Too Good from She Hard saying,
you shouldn't change a band name because they did and it's just a
Branding nightmare. We haven't actually branded anything yet though. So I mean, what would your change be?
But the other ones were just as bad. I chose the shite stripes. Yeah
What did I choose again? New Skids on the Block
Yeah actually Post would have been bad
Quite poo based aren't they?
And we're looking for a gig we're gonna talk about this a little bit more
just after seven o'clock,
if you've got a gig that we can go and play.
Just know we only play one song,
and we haven't crushed it from start to finish yet.
But turns out we're not the only band
that's looking for a gig to just drop in unannounced.
Because I imagine even though there'll be someone
who's helping facilitate us showing up at the gig at the right place at the right time most
people at this party won't have any idea who MC DCR and what we're doing which is
my worst nightmare I was playing a crappy song people going who the hell
are these three so I don't know who organized this someone massive but all
American rejects showed up at a house party unannounced to I imagine at least 95% of the party.
Take a listen, it's so cool.
And everyone's just like, what the hell is going on? It's the actual band, not a covers band.
Wow.
I used to be the biggest crush on the lead singer.
Really?
Oh, come on, yeah, he's gorgeous.
The biggest crash of the lead singer. Really?
Oh come on, yeah he's gorgeous.
Oh he sounds good too!
I think it would have only been, looking at the video, maybe like 30 people?
This was my break-up song.
Oh it got me through some hard time stands.
I'm doing a bit of him.
What about that taste? Yeah, I mean, the same old taste.
It gives you hell, it gives you hell.
I saw this video and thought that it was some rich family that had just hired them.
But the fact that they turned up just unannounced is pretty cool.
Is it cool? I only say that because we, it was really cringe when Macklemore did it
and he turned up to a wedding and nobody knew who he was.
He obviously just turned up to the wrong wedding.
He'd make sure you have all your ducks in a row
at least someone likes you.
Somebody needs to go to him.
You don't want to be like,
people are like, how the hell's this going?
True, that was kind of like the time, was it?
I never forgot Rita Ora went on The Voice,
but it was like The Voice Denmark or something,
because she's part of The Voice America.
It's kind of like a promo almost of her going on
to like push a song.
Yeah, and she did a song and like nailed it.
So they obviously all turned around
and they were like, and what's your name?
Oh my goodness.
Yeah, it was so ragged down.
It was meant to be like, just kind of like, it's Rita.
That's not Rita's fault.
That's her team that have stitched her up.
They should have at least told the judges,
by the way, she's actually big and famous.
If you don't know her, it's Rita Ora.
Yeah, but I guess they just thought we wanted it to be a surprise for the judges. And then they would have gone, well, judges, by the way, she's actually big and famous. If you don't know her, it's Rita Ora. Yeah, but I guess they just thought
we wanted to be a surprise for the judges,
and then they would have gone,
well, and they'll know who she is.
And they were like, yeah, surely.
But I'm like, time and place,
in that environment, in that moment,
they've turned around and not expected
to see a celebrity playing as part of a promo.
Oh God, there's no help for us there.
If Matt Clamore and Rita Ora
aren't getting recognised,
we've got no hope.
Absolutely stuffed, man. No hope. We are looking for a gig, though, so if We've got no hope. We're absolutely stuffed by now.
No hope.
We are looking for a gig though,
so if you've got one in the next two to three weeks,
because I think we'll need that long to practise, at least,
then we're taking finalist suggestions after seven.
The Clint, Meg and Dan podcast.
We're doing something we've never done before.
The Edge Breaky with Clint, Meg and Dan are starting a band.
And so far, well, they've got instruments.
Kirkabane's turning in his grape.
Next step, to find a song to perform.
One of the world's biggest artists, Alex Warren, suggested this.
Uh, Wet Ass ****. Brilliant stuff.
And it's locked in.
Okay, and then there was Teenage Driftbag that was suggested.
Let's just do the song.
We're doing that! I'm with ya!
Lock it in!
We're doing Teenage Driftbag, baby! True! Okay, so now they've locked in the song, we just do the song. We're doing that! I'm with ya! Lock it in! We're doing teenage do-it-yourself!
True!
Okay, so now that we've locked in the song, we just need a venue.
Someone suggested why don't you just do a live performance in a park and then people
can just go get a morning coffee and just come down and listen.
It's less pressure.
Yeah, that's not a bad idea, but the problem is there's no reason for it really.
And also, I mean, I think we all want a little bit of that feeling of pressure.
Like, I want it to be successful, but if I'm just playing to nobody, it doesn't mean anything.
Panoi School Whakatane as a beer festival fundraiser.
So that means I feel like the audience will be a little bit tipsy, and you're always more forgiving.
At a school, we have to have a beer fundraiser at a school.
Oh, parents are just desperate to smash beer and wine when they're off the clock.
That's quite a good one.
That's a good option.
Somebody who wants us at their event is Kate.
Hey Kate.
Good morning.
Good morning Kate.
You're a finalist.
I hear.
So we're going to kind of lock in like four or five finalist gigs and you're the first
finalist gig.
Oh my goodness.
That is so exciting. like four or five finalist gigs and you're the first finalist gig. Oh my goodness.
That is so exciting.
Can I just say how presumptuous of us that we've never even played a song fully through
and we've got finalists for our gig.
Yeah, well it's like we're just trying to play hard to get.
I know, man. Anyway.
Yeah.
OK, Kate, what is the event?
What would we be playing at?
It would be at the opening of our new content studio
in Hamilton, which is a hub for expecting moms
and parents with young ones to come and work
and collaborate and just have a space
where if they need somewhere to work from,
in between school drop-offs or in a moment of peace,
if that ever happens with problems.
Yeah.
So, and how many people are you expecting
at this event, Kate?
Oh, I hope you guys have been practicing hard
because it's gonna be big.
Okay.
Okay, like over 100?
Are we talking like 3,000?
Thousands?
Well, I mean, as big as you can get in Hamilton, right?
Oh, okay, right. So about 20.
Yeah.
The...
I'm kidding.
Um, the...
Okay, is it a daytime gig or a nighttime gig?
Cause it makes a difference as well, I think.
I'm thinking daytime.
Okay.
Is there still going to be like, rose and, you know,
Pinot Gris and stuff for the mums?
Is there drinking?
Oh, of course.
Okay.
Okay, that's good.
Cause it's ticking all our boxes,
a bit of alcohol there.
Yeah, yeah.
Because our rider has a bit of alcohol on it too.
And are you willing to meet a rider,
like if we have some strange requests for backstage,
will you be able to meet those requests?
You can have just the blue M&Ms if you want.
I would sit there and pick out all the other colours.
That's Meg's request, I like the yellow ones. Is it?
I think she was one of the alcohol.
Yeah, she likes that.
You shouldn't make all your friends bottle of Jack.
Okay. Backstage.
So Kate with her event, like her event,
which is the opening of a hub.
Oh, when?
Oh yes, how long have we got?
Yeah.
When is it, Kate?
We're thinking last week of May, first week of June.
Oh, is that King's birthday?
Yeah, alright, so it's a long weekend.
I'm gonna need yellow and M&M's for that.
How many?
I think there's only two M&M's.
That's a good option though.
The only thing is, my only thing, this is quite a serious event.
I was thinking long weekend traffic.
When you're leaving Auckland to go anywhere.
We've got the bus lane though on our tour bus. So that's all good.
Oh, do we have a tour bus?
Producer Carl, do we have a tour bus?
Producer Carl?
Yeah, it's more of a van.
I like it's a white van.
That's your car, isn't it?
That's my car, yeah.
Yeah, brilliant stuff.
The people mover. Oh man. I don't even know if it's big enough to get Meg's drum kit in it.
We're not all going to fit in there with Meg's drum kit. One of us is going to have to drive down.
Honda Odyssey mate, you can get anything in though.
Okay. Alright well if you do want your gig to be considered as one of the finalist gigs, just text GIG to 3343 if you want MCDC to play at your event.
Ideally if it's not this weekend.
Need at least like Dan was saying, a runway of two weeks before.
Yeah, 24th, 21st.
You've got something on the 24th or 21st.
That'd be good.
There's a beer fest happening this week,
in the next week or so, but too soon.
Oh yeah.
Too soon.
I do like the idea of it being a whole festival of beer.
Can they move the beer fest?
We'll ask them. Flint, Meghans and Stinky Boo. Yeah. Too soon. I do like the idea of it being a whole festival of beer. Can they move the beer fest? Hmm.
Blast them.
Flint, Meghans, and Stinky Boots.
Beat That Coincidence is up next.
It's one of our favorite things to hear your very
coincidental stories.
In the past, here are a couple.
I was married in the past, and my partner
was married in the past.
And we both had the same wedding song.
Oh, that's good!
That's a good one!
I used to live in Canada and I came back and was home for about a year,
went to a festival by myself for New Year's and bumped into somebody
that I knew through social media. We'd never actually met in person
and he happened to be there with people that I knew from Canada.
Later that evening, my mum was the one that drove us all home.
We realized that his dad and my dad are really really really good friends.
I think we've really started to get into a groove here with the segment where people
have got some great coincidences now. Just saw this one that happened just the
other day it was a big news story over in the States because apparently on the
23rd of April this year the price of gold hit $3,333.
At the very exact time that it hit that, the price of silver hit $33.33 at the same time.
Now that sounds like a little bit lame, but if you think about it, that's three,
like four threes in a row in silver and gold.
Amazing really.
The chances of that happening I think would be fairly low.
Yeah, I'm still leaning towards lame.
You don't even like it when people have the same birthday.
Oh, but that's easy to happen.
Okay.
You know, people have sex and fornicate at similar times during the year.
There's bound to be people that are born at the same time.
Go to Sarah to give us at least like a starting mark.
And then if you think you can beat that coincidence,
you call us on 0800 The Edge.
Morning, Sarah.
Good morning.
Good morning, Sarah.
What's your coincidental story?
So I grew up travelling with the Gypsies
and me and my sister were passing through Christchurch
and we were having lunch at a food court
when she found a cellphone somebody had left behind behind. Yeah okay. So she thought oh
you know I'll scroll through the phone and see if I can find like a mum or a dad or a
number that might indicate someone we can ring and she's scrolling through and
she saw her own name and she clipped into it and it was her phone number and
she was like what the hell. So she's trying to freaking out at this point. Yeah.
Keep scrolling, find my phone number and she's like what the fuck's going on? What the hell's going on?
And um and it turns out it actually belonged to a friend of ours who used to travel with the gypsies
who was actually living in Christchurch at the time. And you guys just happened to find her phone.
Do you know how many how long ago she lost it?
Um, she'd literally obviously had lunch at the same food court that day earlier, but we had no idea.
And when was the last time you'd seen her?
Um, probably a few years.
Okay, yeah, it's pretty good.
Of all the phones, come on, of all the phones in all the places.
It was a fellow gypsies' phone.
Are you still allowed to call them gypsies?
I don't know.
That's the question.
Are you?
I would love to.
I'm still a gypsy.
She's a gypsy.
Yeah, you're a gypsy and you're fine with it.
Yep.
100%.
I'd love to chat to you, Sarah, about growing up on the gypsy fair.
My goodness, mate.
I bet you're many a gypsy fair in my life.
They're the best.
Whenever there's a gypsy fair in a small town, I'm there.
Yeah.
Maybe Sarah's allowed to say gypsy because she is one, but you're not.
I don't know.
Maybe I can't say it, but if you are one you can.
We could just basically write a song about gypsies.
Yes, yes.
Yeah, I just go with it. We're not supposed to say gypsies, so make sure we stop saying gypsies, please.
Well, you've just said it twice.
Gypsies.
Yeah, you've said it about three times.
Okay, can you beat that? Can you beat Sarah's coincidence?
If you've got a great yarn for us, 0800THEADGEWH Edge where you can flick us a text on 3343. Be that coincidence, if you've got a story
that'll shock us without coincidence
or these series of circumstances.
Dan, you're not gonna love this one.
My brother and his girlfriend are born on the exact same day.
Yeah.
Away, away.
Oh, that's a twist, that's a twist.
And the kid is born the day after them.
Oh no, if they're the same day I'd kind of go,
oh yeah, but the day after,
it may as well be three days after.
So the mum, the dad and the kid,
if they all have the exact same birthday
but they were just one day off.
I know, I mean yeah, it would be amazing
if mum, dad and kid all had the same birthday.
I can sort of see.
I've never seen that before.
I can see how it's interesting to you.
You know, like if it's your thing.
That's interesting to me. No, to the family that's happened to. No, but that's interesting to me. I seen that before. I can see how it's interesting to you. You know, like if it's your thing, it's your family.
No, to the family that's happy too.
No, but that's interesting to me.
I find that interesting.
Her husband Guy and her daughter Daisy
always did the same birthday.
I'm like, that's me.
Couldn't care less.
Well, obviously not,
because Dan doesn't care about birthdays.
Didn't give me a present.
No, no, I did.
I got you a present.
What did you get him?
Oh, that's right.
I threw money off the balcony.
I made him throw $100 in cash off the balcony here at work.
He might have said whatever we as a team could catch before it hit the ground we got to keep.
I still haven't transferred that money actually. I'll do it today.
Okay, what about this story? I was at Universal Studios in Hollywood going down the escalator
at the same time heading up the escalator was my friend's sister.
And they had no idea she was travelling.
I mean, it's better than a birthday, I'll give you that.
Like it is better, but I don't think it's,
I mean, it's, you've just seen someone.
I don't think that's better than a birthday.
I don't think it is.
I think it means-
On the side of the world, though.
Yeah, same time.
You know, like you don't expect to see someone
that close to you randomly on the other side of the world.
So I'll give you that one. Yeah, but I guess you're at Universal Studios, so if, you know, if you randomly on the other side of the world.
So I'll give you that one.
Yeah, but I guess you're at Universal Studios,
so if you're gonna-
It's a tourist spot.
It's like if you're going to Gold Coast,
you're gonna do the theme parks.
My mum and her brother are born on the same day,
a year apart, boring.
Someone's such a fool.
Okay, we've got Anonymous Jane,
Anonymous Jane on 0800 The Edge, good morning.
Good morning, how are you?
Good Jane, good Jane.
I'm really ready to be impressed
by your amazing coincidence.
Oh, no pressure.
Go forth.
Um, I don't know if it's that amazing, but um, so my ex-boyfriend and my ex-boyfriend
has the exact same name and birthday as my current boyfriend.
Come on Dan, ex and current have the same name and birthday.
Now here's the thing, it's not the same family.
So it is a little bit more interesting
because what you've got is the same birthday,
which is a coincidence.
And the same name.
It's a crappy one.
But the fact that they're both dated the same person
does make it more coincidental.
I think that's a good one.
It is pretty good.
So anonymous, Jane, how did you find that out?
Because obviously you remember,
you were, oh, I'm Danny and other Matthew.
So that's fine, you know, two Matthews.
But then you figure out their birthday,
that would have been shocking.
Isn't it Mum?
Yeah, well, when he told me, I was like,
oh, what are the odds of that?
Same with my ex.
He was just the name, being the same.
I was like, oh, that's a bit.
This makes it better for me.
And you may not want to answer this
because you want to remain anonymous.
But what is your boyfriend's name? Is it common or is it very unique?
Um, I definitely don't want to say the name, but it's pretty unique.
It's not like incredibly unique, but...
It's not like Matt or David.
No, no.
It's like Sebastian or something.
Yeah, something along those lines.
OK. OK, so yeah, like a Oh! Yeah, something along those lines. Okay, okay.
Okay, okay.
So yeah, like a commonish name, but not too common.
Okay, that's the most impressive line so far today.
I needed the name to be more impressed.
She's all cagey.
What, like everyone's gonna know if she is?
Okay.
Okay, we're gonna have time for one more.
One more.
It's such a weird thing that you don't want people
to know about you.
Yeah, well I guess people can correlate it to something.
Matt, to end today's weekly segment
of Beat That Coincidence, what is yours?
Well, this is gonna evolve,
but today, being the 8th of May,
is my sister's birthday.
Right.
My dad and my step-mum,
so my dad, my real mum, had my dad had my dad, my real mum had my sister.
It's great.
Okay.
My dad's ex from when he was in his twenties had a daughter with someone completely different.
Completely different bloodline.
Bloodline different, yeah.
Okay.
Step sister.
Had a daughter on the 8th of May, same day.
So stepister. Now, 25 years later, my dad is back with his ex.
So my real sister and my stepsister
are born on the exact same day of the exact same year.
And it's today.
The today aspect has made it more interesting to me
because we're doing a coincidental segment on the day.
And that has happened to be listening.
Yeah. And also if they're born on the exact same year they had happened to be listening. Yeah.
And also if they're born on the exact same year,
that's pretty crazy.
Your dad was busy.
Yeah.
1992, yep.
So that is interesting.
I think it's not quite as good
as the anonymous person before.
Because it is a...
It's our last call, it's our last call.
Yeah.
Okay, oh no, it was brilliant.
That was brilliant.
That was brilliant.
Okay, which one actually did you like better?
Because I'm going to send them double pass to our must see movie, The Accountant 2. That was brilliant. That was brilliant. Okay, which one actually did you like better?
Because I'm going to send them double pass to our must see movie, The Accountant 2.
I mean, they're both again, they're birthday based ones, so they're not my favourite,
but I'm going to have to go with Jane today.
Anonymous Jane.
Anonymous Jane, congratulations.
Thank you guys.
You're very welcome.
Well done.
It would have been more coincidental if Dan had given it to Matt, because then he would
have won movies to the movie, The movie accountant too, which is out today.
The same day as his sister.
Yeah, yeah, but you didn't.
You gave it to James.
So unfortunately we sort of lose the coincidental thread there.
Everybody's a winner on the day, aren't they?
Clint, Meg and Dan.
Scandal with Meg.
Scandal is brought to you by the way that you can win some Lady Gaga tickets, flights,
accommodation tickets to see you live in Sydney. Listen for a Gaga song between 9 and 3, then
go to theedge.rova.nz to get in the draw. All you have to do is remember the name of
the song and then write it in. As soon as you hear it, just enter it and you could be
like winning what, I mean going in the draw 3 or 4 times a day maybe.
Yeah, it's a simple one.
This doesn't count because I'm just playing hook, but we played this on yesterday.
Banger.
I'm at the party for
How many Judas and Agis?
All my friends are with Julie, babe.
Banger is probably one of the most extensive
back catalogues of a modern pop star, right?
Like, near Ru, like, she'd have at least 30 hits.
And also the song has to play between 9am and 3pm.
So if you're here in between then,
like Meg said, the edge dot rover dot nz.
Golden Globes.
The Golden Globes are the, it's like the TV ones isn't it?
Yeah they...
The Grammys of the music, the Oscars of movies, the Golden Globes of TV.
I think the Golden Globes do movies as well.
They're a mix of both.
Yeah but if you would win an Oscar that would mean more about a movie. Oh, definitely.
Yeah, that's the Academy Awards.
They probably weren't as prestigious,
whereas now there are some incredible series on streaming services
where with incredible actors, they probably do mean a lot more now
because there's so much competition in that space.
Well, they're expanding and changing.
And now, for the very first time, coming up in the 2026 awards,
you can win the Golden Globe for the best podcast.
Oh, so would it be a visual one though?
Cause podcasts count as visual and audio.
They haven't said that actually, Dan.
They just say that it's a best podcast.
They haven't said best like visual podcast.
I saw on his Instagram diary of a CEO,
he won like a massive podcast award.
They probably break them into all different categories,
but yeah, he won incredible podcast.
And I actually love listening to that.
He has some very smart people that'll teach you
how to make a lot more money, be a lot more assertive
and just be a better person in your career.
Okay, well good for him, but I'm been thinking
this is our chance to win a Golden Globes.
Oh, yes, Meg.
Now, I think first we need to win a New Zealand radio award.
Right. Hey, we're in the running.
Yeah. We're a finalist this year.
And then hopefully then we can graduate to the Golden Globes.
Right. There's also, hey, did you know about the Webis?
Like, there's an actual... Yeah, Webi Awards.
The Webi Awards. The website awards.
We need to win a Webi one day.
There's the Webi Awards, which is actually a really big and growing, even bigger, overseas,
but also they do podcasts.
One Webby feels like enough in my life.
Come on, I wanna win a Webby.
Clint's got too much Webby.
A Webby and a Webba.
I should host the Webbys.
You should host the Webbys, you're Webby,
you're Mr. Webby, you are Mr. Webby.
I think it is a very, we don't talk about it much
in New Zealand, the Webby Awards, but it's huge overseas.
Huge overseas. Like if you win the Webby Awards, but it's huge overseas. Huge overseas?
Like if you win the Webby Award for best website or something, that is game-changer.
And podcast, and podcast. So like we could enter the Webby's and try and win a Webby.
If you want to enter me Meg, you're more than welcome.
It's a shame.
It's a shame.
Such a shame.
The Webby's.
Anyway, so, oh good on ya.
Yeah, yeah, so Golden Globes are now gonna be doing
a best podcast category.
Golden Globes are a very,
it's kinda like the Oscars but less serious.
So they have a bit more fun,
like Ricky Gervais has hosted it many times before
and always takes the piss out of basically
every celebrity in the world.
But you can't really do that at the Oscars as much,
that's more of a serious event. Yeah, it's Nikki Glasser again, coming up next year, she's gonna be the host. But you can't really do that at the Oscars as much. That's more of a serious event.
Yeah, it's Nikki Glasser again, coming up next year.
She's gonna be the host.
So she didn't last year.
Oh, she's two years in a row.
Yeah, yeah, she was really good actually last time.
Clint, Megan, Dan.
We might have to put our serious,
not pants, maybe shorts on.
Hmm, cool.
Put our serious three quarters on, I think,
for this next little bit.
But it's actually a really important thing
because everyone wants to know how to be earning more money
and there's a lot of chat at the moment about the pay
equity gap between men and women in New Zealand.
Yeah, well there's a lot of women that listen to the show
and there'll be a lot of women that are affected by this,
namely, I mean, most women, but also nurses, teachers,
talking about the, you know, within government pay.
Dan, you've got some details of what just happened this week.
Yeah, the National Party and the government are making moves at the moment to make it
harder to claim pay equity. And that is kind of a thing that affects a lot of women in
New Zealand and around the world where they say that men earn more than women, which they
do traditionally. And so this is affecting a lot of government jobs as well, more like
nurses, rest home workers, teachers, care workers, teachers. Predominantly like female occupations.
Lead industry. And so the moves are basically, in a nutshell, they're hoping
to make it more difficult to prove that you are affected by the gender pay gap.
Totally correct and they've thrown out anybody that has put in an application
to the government is now being kind of put in the bin.
And I know that they are celebrating because they're like, this is going to save taxpayers
$1.2 billion, but at the cost of these women and workers that are getting paid less, even
though they're doing incredible jobs.
Yeah, the government's saying that we're paying too much out to write this gender pay
equity.
It's costing the country almost two billion dollars a year. So let me talk about the
unexplainable pay gap because there might be somebody listening going okay
well I'm a guy and I work with a girl but I've worked harder or
longer or whatever you know whatever. I'm paid more but I'm more experienced than I've been here longer.
We're not talking about that we're talking about the unexplainable pay gap
which is proven this is a real thing it's about 8. We're talking about the unexplainable pay gap, which is
proven. This is a real thing. It's about 8.6% in New Zealand. There is a pay gap in New
Zealand. 80% of that is unexplained. The top five reasons. And we're talking about unexplained
being no difference to skills, qualifications, anything like that, apart from the fact that
there's a gender difference. Number five, for reasons this is happening, career progression blockers, women are facing glass ceilings or
lack of access to networks, sponsorships and leadership pathways. Number four,
negotiation gaps. This is what we want to talk about next with Sim. Research shows
men are more likely to negotiate salaries and be successful when they do.
Number three, the motherhood penalty. Women who have children often experience a long-term earnings decline while men with
children may receive even a fatherhood premium.
That's been proven.
This is not my words.
This is all proven stuff.
Number two, undervaluation of women's work, like jobs traditionally done by women caregiving
administration early childhood nurses like you just said, Dan, that's what the people
were talking about there.
Even when they require comparable skill, effort and responsibility as male-dominated jobs
are paid less and number one bias and discrimination both conscious and unconscious bias leading
to women being offered lower salaries and fewer promotions.
The interesting thing about it is as well a lot of the jobs, the big industries that
are affected by the gender pay gap are female dominated.
Teachers, most of the teachers in New Zealand are female.
Nurses, same sort of issue,
yet the men are still paid more.
That's crazy.
So Meg's given some of the reasons why.
That's not overly helpful
unless we know how to make the change.
And that's where Sim from Girls That Invest comes in.
Yeah, we wanted to get somebody on that could actually,
we know that this is an issue
that the government have to sort.
We know that if you're a boss, this is something you have to take on and try and make a difference
in your industry.
Yeah.
But what can we do right now as women that can help us and one that I picked out of that
top four was negotiations and maybe we can learn how to negotiate for ourselves because
that seems to be a skill that is maybe harder for women to do.
So Sim is going to help us with that and talk about investing next.
Yeah, I just went and followed her page
because I was like, well, she's given great advice,
mostly probably for women, but I'll take it as well.
645,000 people follow her and her financial advice.
I think anybody could probably take some of this advice.
We have Sim from Girls That Invest on Instagram.
She's got almost 700,000 followers there.
Over 10 million podcast downloads.
She's been seen in Forbes and Vogue
and has an investing masterclass that you can join
and a role to be in so that you can change
and improve your financial situation.
Yeah, incredibly inspirational woman.
Have been following her for years.
Really excited to talk to her this morning.
Hi, Sam.
Hello, thank you for having me.
Oh, it's so
great to have you on. I don't know if you, I have not been knowing what's
going on because you're not from New Zealand but we've been having some
discussions and government changes when it comes to pay equity with
women and closing that pay gap and one of the reasons that I looked up that
women get paid less for is because we are research showing that we are not as
good at negotiating, less likely to negotiate salaries and be less get paid less for is because we are research showing that we are not as good
at negotiating, less likely to negotiate salaries and be less successful when we
do. Do you have any tips right off the bat when it comes to negotiating for
more money as a woman? You know what that is actually such a great question and
yeah I've definitely been around what's been happening it's been incredibly
disappointing to see but when we look at the things that we can do
to become better negotiators,
a lot of studies have found that male counterparts at work,
they just turn up to their pay negotiations
with so much more belief in themselves,
and they are not scared to kind of like, not even upset their boss, but they're not scared to kind of like not even upset
their boss but they're not scared to say things like hey this is why I think I
deserve like a 40k pay rise and then when we look at the studies that look at
how women speak about it we will think we deserve like we kind of wait we have
a more not a proactive approach but more reactive approach we imagine that our
boss should see the great work that we're doing
and be like, you know what, Sim? I've noticed that you've been working away
quietly for the last six months, like here's a 5k bonus.
And that kind of sets us up on the wrong foot to begin with.
That just doesn't happen. They're not in the position where they're just
sitting there, even though that's maybe what
maybe we would do, or a person, a woman would sit there and go oh I've noticed
that for six months they've been quietly working away but that's not really
what's happening on the on the scope of a company or a business and so we
need to advocate for ourselves better and be confident in it.
Absolutely and one of the ways I kind of like three ways that I like to deal with
this and the first is if you have a job where you get feedback
Whether it's from a customer like a client your employer. I have a
Sort of little folder in my gmail called feedback and anytime someone says anything great
I kind of just I when I used to have a really great boss
I would just kind of hide it away and then when it came to pay time
I'd be like, you know, I'd pull up the receipts.
I'd be like, you know, in March, you said this.
And in June, you said this.
And a customer said, I'm so glad that I like worked with you.
So this is why you should pay me 20 percent more.
And so you've got proof, you're not.
And then you just feel more confident as well, because you're like, no,
I'm not just pulling stuff out of the air like these are your words boss. And how else how else can women make money
right now because I don't invest myself I have followed you for years and I'm
not following what you tell me to do but how what about people that feel like
they don't have the money to invest they feel like they're just getting by we're
in a bit of a you know crisis as well with just groceries and food so how do
you feel about people that have only got like
$20, $50, $100 left over at the end of the week
if they're lucky?
I have to say I'm clearly not doing a very good job
if you've followed for like more than a week.
No, that's not you.
That's a whole shit bunch of issues.
That's a great idea.
And then guy goes and does something else and goes,
geez, what a-
That is me, not you.
That's a me issue.
You've got great advice.
I'm not taking it.
No, well I still, I'm still, if I'm honest,
I'm still, a Friday, still feel like I don't feel confident
enough to know what I'm doing.
And that's not on you.
That is still just a me thing.
How do you get that confidence?
Yeah, to invest.
Yeah, that's actually such a great question.
I think the confidence, we've surveyed our community.
We were like, why are you guys not investing?
Like, what is stopping you? And the two top reasons were lack of confidence and lack of
knowledge. And I really think they go hand in hand. If you feel knowledgeable, you're
going to be more confident. You're going to be like, okay, like, I see the news and I'm
not scared because I know what it means. Whereas if you jump in, you put in like $100, you
know, into an app, and then it drops or, you put in like $100 into an app and then
it drops or something's happening with tariffs and you're Googling tariffs in a frantic
like, you know, it just gets quite overwhelming. It doesn't work. So I find that if you can
even put like five minutes aside a week where you sit down and go, I'm just going to get
my head around the words, the jargon. That's the biggest barrier. And once you do that, you'll start to go, okay, actually, all the research shows
you don't have to have lots of money to invest. You can now start with $10 a week, and you
can put $10 into some shares of companies that you like or funds that you like to diversify.
And then it starts to not seem so tricky. but the kind of person that invests $10 a week over, you know, 20, 30 years, they're actually going to make
technically or theoretically make more money than someone that's like putting
lots in for over two or three years. The time is on our side and right now, you
know, we're all hopefully not near the end of our career, so we have a little
bit more time to play with.
Yeah, definitely need to follow girls that invest,
get amongst it, start getting some tips.
If you are going, oh my God, but I don't know,
it's like, well, you'll find out.
Otherwise you've got a masterclass
that people can enroll for.
Think it's only like a day and a half away
before that closes, Sim?
That's correct, yes.
So we have an investing masterclass that we host and it just helps people learn exactly what they need to.
And so when they're done with it, six weeks long, they're like, okay, I'm ready to invest. I feel really confident.
And when you have that knowledge, I think that's just the main step.
But also, you know, we've got lots of free resources as well, just at the very beginning.
You can text invest to 3-3-4-3. I'll send you back to Sims Instagram if you don just at the very beginning. You can text invest to 3343,
I'll send you back some Instagram
if you don't follow already,
and that's where you can get those results.
You almost can't afford not to,
and there's no better investment than yourself.
You think about what it might cost you time-wise
or financial-wise, but long-term, exponential growth.
I save money into a bank account,
which is just sitting there,
and it should be going into an investment fund.
Sharesies is a great one as well,
because you can just have a play around on there.
It's really easy.
Super easy, just download the app and away you go.
You can put like $5 in here and there.
Yeah, you can just do it like an automatic payment.
Just automatically invest for you every single week.
Once it's set up, it's just doing all the work for you.
Clint, Meg and Dan.
Doing something we've never done before,
maybe you've always wanted to do as well,
but are still yet to put yourself out there.
The Edge Breaky with Clint, Meg and Dan are starting a band.
And so far, well, they've got instruments.
Kirkabane's turning in his grave.
Next step, to find a song to perform.
One of the world's biggest artists, Alex Warren, suggested this.
Uh, Wet Ass B****. Brilliant stuff.
And it's locked in.
Okay, and then there was Teenage Driftbag that was suggested.
Let's just do the song.
We're doing that! I'm with ya! Lock it in!
We're doing Teenage Dr'm with ya, lock it in! We're doing teenage dude night, baby!
True!
Okay, so now that they've locked in the song,
we just need a venue.
Yeah, we put together some finalist-type venues
that tick more boxes than some of the others.
Some of them was like, great, but then the next week,
and we're like, we ain't ready.
We've got some very specific criteria, don't we?
We don't wanna play at a school
because it scares Clinton Meagre kids. Correct. Kids are very judgmental and scary and super honest.
Yeah we want somewhere where a lot of people will know us you know so we don't
just turn up and people like who the hell are these three. I'd like to think
that like more than 50% of the people we're playing to know what we're up to
and they're in on it. And the gig needs to know that we can only play one song so
we can't be entertainment for the whole night.
No, just once and then we're going to, you know, quietly...
Yeah?
Quietly leave.
Yeah, I just thought of another Veto Weddings.
Because based on that, the reason you've just mentioned Dan, one song.
If you see people setting up like a drum kit and amps and stuff,
I would be, as a guest at a wedding,
I would be fizzing, just being like,
oh my god, they've got a live band.
And then when I found out they were doing one song,
I'd be gutted, and I don't want to be the person
that makes everyone upset.
But here's the thing,
we've got a built-in solution for that issue.
Neeps has his own band.
So we play one song, we open,
then they take over with their band.
I don't mind that.
Yeah. So we can- Neeps, you don't need to be paid, do you? No, no, I haven't over with their band. I don't mind that. Yeah.
So we can.
You don't need to be paid, do you?
No, no, I haven't been paid for anything since a world tour.
So he only has to pay for this job.
It's all great experience, though.
Yeah, yeah, it's all more experience.
A shout out as well to our friends at MusicWorks,
who have hooked us up with all this gear
so that we can practice and travel around with it,
and amps and cables,
picks, everything. I was like, yeah, that's been so incredible. Meg's even getting
lessons from one of the hot guys Sam on Monday. Yeah, she specifically
requested the hot guy. Yeah, I don't even know if Sam knows how to play drums.
He does, he's a guitarist.
Fabulous stuff.
Okay, now Vicky, her gig is in the finals.
It's one of the gigs that we were at.
That could be fun.
Morning, Vicky.
Hi, Vicky.
Good morning.
Morning, Vicky.
Now, tell us a little bit more about your gig.
What is it and when is it?
Okay, so I resigned from my job
and my last day is at the end of the month.
Okay. But as you guys are talking, I'm thinking like the crowd,
it's like only about eight or nine people.
Okay.
Well now.
Okay, wait Vicky, just, we're just gonna put you
on hot resting and it's kind of,
just gonna do a little bend at the kind of side.
Okay, eight or nine people.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
It was less than I was imagining.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
But then I was imagining an arena tour.
Yeah.
So I think that it's...
I feel like also when you say eight or nine,
it's probably more likely six.
Yes, that's the best case scenario.
Okay, so can we just go back to Vicky?
We could get a little rent a crowd in.
But you know that...
We could get some people from the edge,
Guy, my husband could be there.
The proof riders don't need to rent a crowd.
Yeah.
Okay, we'll go back to Vicky.
Okay, Vicky, tell us more.
Okay, so yeah, I've worked for them for a little while
and it'll be my last day at the end of the month.
So yeah, it's just the crowd.
I don't know if it's gonna be enough people for you guys.
Unlike the date, what does that give us?
Like almost three weeks?
Almost three weeks, yeah.
Or just over?
How are you leaving the company, Vicky?
Have you left on good terms
or is it a bit of a salty situation?
Or have you had your third and final warning?
No, so I did kind of think of it like one of those situations where you quit on the
spot with a band, but we're already past that so we've already resigned which is fine.
But yeah, we always do like a leaving thing when somebody leaves, like a morning tea or
like a lunch, you know.
Okay Vicky, stay there, I'm just gonna put you on hold again.
Morning tea for food.
Your lunch is provided.
No, but it sounds like we're in place of morning tea,
so people are gonna be like, where are the donuts?
There's nothing going to go back.
Vicky, will there be food?
Yeah, there'll be food.
I want people fed and watered before we play, so they're not grumpy.
Also Vicky, have you asked your boss about this?
I don't want to turn up and then being like,
what are you doing here?
Like it would have to be like.
Yeah, so I can talk to one of the people
and I think it would be fine, yeah.
Okay, so we haven't quite signed off.
I think it would be fine.
Where in your workspace would we be playing?
Cause I just want a picture of it's rock and roll enough.
Like inside the office or we've got a deck outside.
Oh playing on the deck?
Yeah we've got a bit of a deck.
How big's your deck?
Yeah.
And it's for everybody.
Okay, so never size.
They're pros and cons but honestly the number is starting to let me down a bit guys.
We could just do it in the office there.
I mean I think Dan's a mech.
Do you want to play on a big deck?
I think that's actually a small deck from what she's described.
I think it's an adequate deck.
Are you happy to play on a small deck?
Okay, well I think if it fits us it's...
Okay, well Vicky, you're a finalist
and I think you could be a front runner.
Okey dokey.
Okay, perfect.
Okay, now you just need to go and talk to the management
or the CEO or whatever and just make sure
that they kind of are like, yeah, what is it?
Sure, whatever.
As long as Meg's willing to sit on it then.
Okay, all right.
Why did I say that?
I don't know, Meg.
Next. I don't know.
I don't know why I said that.
Sorry, I...
Oh, we've got more audience
because Angela's texting her saying,
my husband and I are willing to crash the farewell gig.
So it'll be...
Okay. The workmates.
Like, I think Vicky's only bringing nine, but anyone else is welcome.
I know, somebody's also said,
why don't you make an event specifically so everyone can come?
Idea.
Yeah.
What's Spark doing two Fridays from now?
Someone just texted them Bunnings Car Park?
Question mark.
Rhythm and Snags.
Now I am keen on that.
Or the Cumeo Showgrounds, there's something there as well.
Oh, there's always something at the CUMU Showgrounds.
It goes for a long time,
we just be playing the one song over and over and over.
I do like Rhythm and Snags.
Bunnings, if you're listening, you only get involved.
They've got an event tonight for Mother's Day
at my local Bunnings, so they do do events.
Which island would we play in?
No, no, no.
Like the drill section.
No, there's gotta be something more rock and roll in there.
All the bathrooms and the toilets.
Cause me could use one of the toilets
as her drumming stool.
Or I could use the drums.
Yeah.
I wanna try something we haven't done on the show,
which may be risky doing it now.
What does your name say about you?
We had Yazz on yesterday as we were about to hand
the reigns over to her at around 10 o'clock
and she was talking about one of her flatmates
and something that her flatmate had done.
But she wasn't overly forthcoming
with who her flatmate was,
because she flats with like eight other girls
and that's not even an exaggeration.
Big flat.
And we were like, which one was it?
Not her name.
I'm not saying your name.
I'm team Denise.
Sounds like yes, that's like a 50 year old fortune teller.
Sorry Denise.
You should have seen this coming.
Yeah, Denise's weren't happy at that comment but in my defense I knew a Denise who was like a 50 year old who
backed herself as a clairvoyant and did readings for people, myself included.
So I was just playing on experience.
I actually saw just yesterday one of the, I've forgotten what paper it is, one of the papers,
the big like New York Times, one of them, they have done a whole article about what names mean,
and what vibe they give off and that's why people who take the name of the baby so seriously.
I read it because obviously I'm trying to name a child.
It's interesting because like everybody has a connotation with certain names and
Meg before I worked with you and before I met you met you the only other Meg
I'd ever met was a dog. One of my childhood friends Michael had a Meg
called it was a dog.
Now you know a couple of Megs that are dogs.
Yeah now I know two dogs. I used to play football with a guy
whose first name was legitimately Legend.
And I was like,
oh, your mum's really put the pressure on you there.
And to his credit, he was a great footballer.
So, yeah, it sucked. Lucky.
Ew.
But you gotta be a legend in every area of your life.
But yeah, you call us up.
I thought we could do this.
So let's say Kyle calls.
We're gonna take a call or each.
Nurtle it.
You get three assumptions about Kyle,
and you get a point for each that is correct.
So the maximum points you can get is three.
So for Kyle, I'd be like,
less than $2,000 in a savings account,
has cheated more than three times,
and probably consumes about three to four
energy drinks a week.
Oh my God.
Kyle's like a web developer, has never been laid,
and is still living with his mum.
That's the interesting thing about perceived names.
Okay, well you just call us.
The more unique your name, maybe the better,
but I mean, if you want to play, then play.
0800 THE EDGE.
And we will take a call each,
and assume three things about you based on your name alone,
and then find out how many hits we get out of three. Okay.
What does your name say about you? We can't do this yesterday, I didn't mean to,
we're just talking about a hypothetical person Denise and then I said she was a
50 year old fortune teller. A lot of Denise's didn't like that. And I do
wonder what your name says about you,
at least when it comes to first impressions
and people finding out who you are.
We thought we'd try it.
With a caller each, you get three assumptions,
you nail all three and get a perfect score,
I imagine you'd be hard to beat.
Yeah, exactly.
I think most names come with a connotation, don't they?
Yeah.
I think so, and it's scary stuff.
Okay, so-
You know stuff from naming a kid.
Before we speak to Grace from Methvin,
straight away the name Grace,
what are your three assumptions before we bring her on?
Before we bring her on, the things I have about Grace is,
one, she's creative and artistic.
That name to me is like she's a good drawing
or she likes being creative.
Number two is her favourite pastime is rotting in bed
with food and reality TV on the laptop.
Who doesn't love it?
But I feel like that's like,
that is her favourite.
She'd take that over like a Friday night out for drinks.
But she's also mistaken for being quite sweet,
but when she does go out,
it's the most rogue in the group.
She's a bad girl.
Well like, she just will do something like,
bloody, I would have graced her last night.
Let's go Grace.
Number one was you can draw.
Can you draw?
Or artistic.
I can cook and plate up a pretty good looking plate of food.
Okay.
It's not art.
You can cook, man.
It is art.
Oh, Dan, I beg to differ.
Okay, what about being like favorite pastime
is like rotting and beard with food in reality TV?
No.
No.
She's got it.
All right, come on.
Okay, Grace, are you mistaken for being like, No. No. She's going to absolutely... Alright, come on, come on, come on. You're too good.
Shocker.
Okay, Grace, are you mistaken for being like, like, a nice girl but you're the most rogue
on a night out when you, when you have a few?
Bullseye.
Bullseye!
Oh, okay.
Bullseye!
I got one.
One from Grace!
Nice!
I'll take it, I'll take it.
Okay.
Okay, thank you.
One for Grace. Okay, so I've got. And she thought she was creative and artistic.
We were just the ones that said.
True.
So that's not bad.
It's all us, it's all us.
All right, Dan, you've got, no, who's got,
Clint, you've got Lizette.
Lizette?
That's a tricky one, that's not a common name.
All right, maybe I'll go through one at a time
with Lizette, so I don't have to repeat myself.
Okay, Lizette, I think you drive
a really cheap, banged up vehicle.
Have you got that right?
Like under...
No.
No?
Damn it.
That one's out.
Okay, now the next one Lizzie.
Okay, you love a cocktail but very rarely will you ever order one.
Unless someone else is paying.
Yes, 100%.
Okay, okay, okay, last one.
Okay, you have a very long list of must-haves in a partner.
You're quite picky when it comes to finding the person for you.
Um, no, I don't think I'm super picky.
That's easy.
Wait, Lizette, are you single? Are you single or you got a partner? No, I have over picking. Nice. Lizzy's easy. Take that through Lizzy. Wait Lizzy, are you single?
Are you single?
You got a partner?
No, I have a partner.
Oh, sad to them.
Okay.
They've got nothing.
No, I'm not picking.
They'll just do.
Alright, so far me and Clint are on the same.
One out of three.
Dan, can you do any better with Jamie?
Jamie?
Okay.
That's my wife's name, so be careful there.
Jamie.
First guess and then I'll get them on.
You know, Clint's wife is the only Jamie I know.
Uh-huh.
What do you think when you hear the name Jamie?
I reckon Jamie going on what I know
is something to do with the beauty industry.
Okay.
Clint's wife's a makeup artist.
And we don't know if Jamie's a girl by the way.
I know a Jamie who is a wonderful gay man.
Oh, okay.
So, Jamie.
Jamie, are you a fantastic makeup artist?
No. No, braga.
Okay, Jamie, I was really hoping.
Two more, two more, come on, Dan.
Okay, come on.
Jamie.
Need these two to win.
Okay, you have a beautiful house with a pool.
Definitely, no.
No, no, no, no.
We've got one more, we've got one more.
Okay, one more.
Okay.
What else is Jamie known for?
Your husband...
is an arrogant douchebag that does a lot on social media, paid-wise.
No, not on social media.
No, no way.
No, okay.
Oh, man.
Do you have good boobs though, Jamie?
My bet.
Sadly, no.
Oh, god, Jamie!
Oh, my god, I'm the poor man.
What happened, Jamie?
What have you got going for you, Jamie? Poor Jamie. Oh, my god, I'm a four! Four pops, man! What have you got going for you Jamie?
What Jamie?
Oh bugger.
You and my wife do not have a long comment.
Jamie, thank you so much for playing though.
Thank you.
I have got a couple of texts, I know Grace did all three of those things, so it's quite close.
Meg was the closest, I think you were the closest out of the three of us, even though you only got one from three.
Another one said my sister Jamie is a cosmetic tattooist. Maybe just go with the wrong Jamie
What are her boobs like?
Oh my gosh
Would you give your phone to your friends and let them rifle through your search history?
Probably not but Dan does
You never found anything sexy in there, eh? I would never have ever described anything that you've searched as sexy, no.
Okay, good.
Incognito mode, baby.
God, game changer.
Right.
I had it.
You have searched for a lot...
What the...
I know, I'm ignoring him.
A lot of watches.
Dan is now collecting watches. He's come into a bit of cash. Oh, lot, I know, I'm ignoring him. A lot of watches, Dan is now collecting watches.
He's coming to a bit of cash.
No, I haven't come in, and this is the problem Meg,
and this is, I think a lot of people with ADHD out there
will sympathise.
I bought, I got one watch, okay, for free,
and then for some reason now I'm just obsessed
with having a collection, and the collections are my vice.
I collect so many things.
I collected rocks when I was a kid, I collected coins, I collected stamps, Pokemon cards. As an adult, I'm in my vice. I collect so many things. I collected rocks when I was a kid.
I collected coins.
I collected stamps, Pokemon cards.
As an adult, I'm collecting vinyl.
Oh, if your wife knew what you'd spent on vinyl over the years.
Oh my goodness me.
She'd divorce you.
And now I'm getting into this deep thing with watches
and I need to get out of it.
Weekly Dan's like,
which one of these three watches do you like the most?
Yeah, yeah.
Which one of these five watches do you like the most?
I'm like, it's really bad and I need to stop.
You also had a fancy dinner last night, I think it must be,
because I know it's payday today for all of us,
and maybe food running low in the household
because he googled food I can do with one sausage.
No, no, it was, I had three sausages.
Did you have white bread?
I had three sausages frozen in the freezer,
and then it was like maybe make a
pasta or something. Yeah then you googled sauce pasta. Yeah and I made a sauce pasta.
Lovely! I had some pesto so I put pesto in with the sausages then some of
that curly whirly pasta. So it was just pesto, pasta and sausage you needed to do a recipe?
Yeah. Kimmy, his cat not doing too well, bad breath cat, cat toothpaste, which looking at getting him breath mints, because apparently you can get breath mints.
He stinks.
I tried that where you put...
You need to take a tooth out then maybe?
He's quite young.
I remember putting like water droplets in my dog's water bowl and that was meant to fix it.
Nah, that didn't work.
Then you buy the toys that you want and then immediately I had to actually get a toothbrush
and brush his teeth, which he didn't love and it only lasted about four days.
We're looking at doing that with our cat.
Yeah. Um, rash shirt, cheap surfboard, surf lesson, surf club, surf club near me,
cheap surf lesson and rash shirt on sale.
Yeah, I was looking into doing some surf lessons because I kind of want to get out and get a hobby
and I just don't want to take my shirt off. I'm a little bit self-conscious, so I was looking at rash shirts.
It's not the right season to learn to surf.
Why would you be?
I think it's season, you can surf any time.
Oh yeah.
Oh, you're gonna want more than a rash top
thinking you're on a thick, wet surf.
Yeah, it turns out it's quite hard
to find rash tops these days.
He's coming for you too, Clint.
You've just got him fished this week.
Dan Webby's trying to wind up.
You just Googled glass floor fish tank.
Oh, that was for Clint.
I was sending him some suggestions.
Oh.
Yeah, no, no, no.
And I think the saddest one this week goes to,
what day is it today?
It is the Thursday.
Sunday's a very important day.
Mother's Day.
Yeah.
And you Googled Mother's Day gift idea.
Ooh.
My mum's really hard to buy for.
Yes, I know.
What's in Dan's Google history?
Is it sexy, is it weird?
Is it sick?
Is it sick?
My mum is one of those people that she just likes
to go for a coffee.
So they all just do that?
Well, a great idea is just get her a voucher
to a cafe for a decent amount of money
and every time you guys go out and get coffee together.
Don't you worry mum if you're listening,
I've got you something very exciting.
Is it the glass floor fish tank or the watch?
Not as exciting as that.
Yeah, but do know, Julie, Dan's mum, if you are listening,
Dan doesn't have a lot of money to spend on you
because he spends it all on watches.
Yeah, I got your watches.
Yeah, and if you don't like it, I'll have it.
Go have it.
Clint, Meg and Dan. Clint, Meg and Dan.
Clint, Meg and Dan's.
What you want, do what you want.
Where's your guy?
Yeah, just a pre-warning for anybody that has a child with access to your wallet.
A boy has ordered a case of Dum Dum Lollipops on Amazon.
A case?
Yeah, no, 30 cases of them actually, sorry.
30 cases of Dum Dum Lollipops through Amazon.
He was able to do it.
The delivery resulted in a, you know,
obviously arriving at the door and then the parents
be like, why has this been sent to us?
And it's like, we'll look back at your account
and you guys actually bought them.
And this has happened a lot with kids and credit cards
and gaming purchases and online purchases.
And a case can be like, if it doesn't say how many.
No, 30 cases though.
Yeah, I wonder what they spin on lollipops
Yeah, you've been keeping your wallet somewhere a little higher approximately some cases contain a hundred lollipops
But other contain a thousand
Munjua when it's gonna make its way to New Zealand, but the future of firefighting, robot dogs with water cannons. Wow. Yeah, videos going around at the moment. They are transforming
emergency response armed with water cannons capable of shooting up to 60
meters at 40 liters per second. They can tackle fires with precision. They have
like heat sensors so they can go into rooms and then find people and then
inform the fire service which rooms they need to go in and where they don't need to risk
their lives because no one's there. Oh but that makes me so sad about like if
they were to die. It's a robot. Well they... Why make it look like a cute little dog?
I don't think it's not that cute. They have waterproof batteries. Okay. I don't think
they've made it all fluffy and stuff. It's like made of metal. Yeah so firefighters won't have to risk their lives and I guess they're
working smarter not harder. Yeah that's cool and finally Liam Payne who passed away was
last year now it was early last year wasn't it Liam Payne passed away. It's been over a year I
think since his death and his will has just been announced he didn't have a will but his fortune
54 million New Zealand dollars and because he didn't have a will, but his fortune, 54 million New Zealand dollars.
And because he didn't have a will, there's a lot of debate about who that whole fortune
goes to.
In the UK, I think his ex-wife has got the power of attorney.
His baby mama.
Yeah, his baby mama.
And so I believe that she has the kind of power, hopefully, to grant whoever gets the
money, hopefully it's his son beer but
54 million dollars Cheryl Cole right? Yeah Cheryl Cole and I think there is obviously some
debate over there about who gets the money because he was with a girl. He was with a girl, yeah he had an ex girlfriend I don't know for how long he was with her.
Is de facto relationship just a New Zealand thing you know if you live with
someone for more than two years and they're entitled to half your stuff. Yeah, so apparently according to the story, Kate Cassidy, who was his partner when he passed away,
she's not entitled to anything, but she is entitled to fight it.
So she can go into court and say...
But yucky! Yucky! So gross!
And it doesn't... there's nothing here to say that she is doing that,
but I think they are saying that it could be open for her.
I hope she doesn't, because it's just so...
You get people in your ear going,
hey, you were with him, he was your partner.
And then you go on the headlines,
where she says she deserves at least 10 million,
and I'm sure she won't.
And that's the sad thing that when people die
with a bit of money, it brings people out of the woodwork.
Yeah.
And there's always fights after it, it's gross.
Clint, Meg and Dan.
Have you ever wanted to be in a band growing up
and then you realize, oh, that's right,
I don't play a musical instrument.
So that's not gonna happen.
And then all the people that did do bands in school
were just like super cool.
And you're like, oh man, I wish I could do that.
Oh man, yeah, most EPIC people.
We just started our run late.
We should have done in school, we didn't.
We're picking up instruments now.
That's what life's about.
It's like you're never too old.
Yeah, I think in some cases you are, maybe.
I think maybe band is one of them.
But a lot of people learnt their instruments in a band.
They didn't learn it by themselves
and then got into a band.
It's a good way to learn
because you were all supporting each other.
I'm gonna play the song, Ten Aged Airbag,
that is the song we're going to learn first.
I'm just gonna play it out
and we're gonna go through who's doing what
because we haven't kind of worked that out yet.
Okay.
So this is me.
I'm playing the same drum.
It's not the wiki wiki bit. This is me, then I come in with guitar. Now? This is me. I'm the player who's in the drum. It's not the wiki wiki bit.
This is me then I come in with guitar. Now here's the problem. I'm playing all the way
through. In case you do with this song. But you guys get a break. I hardly get a break.
I'm gonna sing here. But not play. Yeah so that I don't have to play and sing at the
same time and neither do you. Right. So you're just still doing one thing, you're just playing.
I'm still drumming right?
Yeah.
I'm just drumming in the background here.
If anything, yeah.
Just start singing, it'll be a bit pitchy.
Hard too because I have to start it.
My fingers already started to get sore.
Then I come in singing whilst playing.
And I'm still drumming, I'm drumming as well.
This whole time I'm just drumming.
Just though.
So this though is me and you both doing guitar
to fill the sound, right?
Oh god, Dan must get a break soon.
He's been playing all the way through into the chorus.
I'm still drumming.
No, I'm playing still.
My fingers are bleeding by now, okay?
Not even halfway through.
Here's Dan's break.
And then so you just stand there?
No, I'm still playing there.
But this is still the same bit he played at the beginning,
so it's not hard.
You should know how to do it.
So I'm singing the verses.
But you're not playing.
That's what I just want to stress.
That's okay, I'll just have my guitar, like,
and my, what do they call the thing you wear?
A strap?
Yeah, I'll wear my strap.
And I'll just have my guitar hanging
while I'm holding the mic. Wait, can I confirm, I'm still doing the drums this A strap? Yeah, I'll wear my strap. And I'll just have my guitar hanging while I'm holding the mic.
Wait, can I confirm?
I'm still doing the drums this whole time.
What, you guys are going back and forth about your breaks?
Well, I have a break yet.
And I'll tell you what, Peg, you've not sung yet either.
You won't let me?
All together in the chorus.
Are we happy with that?
All allowed to sing at the same time?
Am I allowed to sing?
We could BV.
We could BV you here.
I'm happy with the more the merrier.
Oh, OK.
OK.
As long as you're in pitch, I'm firm Meg's micromania fighter.
OK.
Now what's happening here?
I'll tell you what's not happening, but be having a break.
OK, so I'm doing lead guitar here.
Dun.
Yeah, this sweet flint shows the finesse on the gap. Okay, so I'm doing lead guitar here today
I haven't learned this by ear from honest
Again I'm still just playing the drums in the background
No, I stop you get a break here
Should sing it but we haven't quite decided yet, have we? Well no, this is still me. This is the verse.
Rochelle said, class is on the fingers down, you're gonna need them.
Jonathan said, you can't take a break down.
Exactly.
Okay, so I'm still doing this. This is the verse. I'm singing all the verses.
You're singing the verse.
And this is Dan playing.
And we don't know who's singing the next part.
But just to confirm, you're not playing now.
No, I don't sing and play at the same time. It's a rule.
Interesting how Clint's got that problem.
Now we haven't decided who's doing the girl part.
I do think it should be me.
I personally think the female should do the female part.
The first he's ever said that.
What's that come about?
Is he alright?
No, no, no.
I think we're in a temple trip.
Now you're going to have to play it safe, the drums are back.
Okay, and then yeah, if we're in the chorus, we're all in.
Including Producer Neeps and Webdior Bella who are gonna be on keys and bass.
Producer Neepia is in a band. Producer Neepia, how often is it that somebody gets a break during the song?
Only when it's written into the song, so not very often. Let's write it in, because Clint and Meg both get a break
and I'm playing all the way through.
Okay.
So I want equality in this band.
I don't want it to start off with people
getting a little bit angry.
Who plays the end here?
That's all of us.
Oh God, we all gotta be in time.
You follow me on this.
Oh, who's got tambourine?
Oh, Web Girl Bella's got tambourine and keys.
Okay, great.
Does she get a break?
Nah, see, Web Girl Bella, she's a multi-instrumentalist,
so you know, she's busy the whole time.
What's producer Khal doing?
Oh, lighting or something.
Yeah, I was just saying, the song's ended,
so you can all have a break, like, at this point.
Yeah, true, that's true.
My fingers will not be existing. True.. In fact you usually play for an hour,
so your first break's sometimes about 20 minutes in,
so maybe we could play it four times,
then have a break,
and then play it another four times.
I would like to start making bets,
not a gambling girl, but I have a bet to make.
Yeah.
Dan will break his guitar
or jump into the crowd at the end or something.
He'll lose his mind.
Yeah, I'll do a crowd surf.
There it is.
As long as you've got enough energy
from not having a break during the three minutes 49.
You don't need your fingers to crowd surf, my friend.
Hopefully not.
If anything, you should be keeping them to yourself.
One of the finalists for the event has got six people.
I don't know if you could crowd surf.
Holy shit, you made it the whole way through.
