Starting point is 00:00:00 This is the Overthinkers podcast. Yoda, welcome. Clint Megan Dan, your hosts. I am entering a competition. Oh, that's unlike you. Oh, Dan was doing that yesterday for another radio station. And he was the only comment, and they deleted it. Did they delete it?
Starting point is 00:00:17 Yeah, so there's a station. No, I won't name the station. No, I will. Coast. What do they do? They do like sort of old you boomer stuff, hey? Yeah. They like cater to the older folk.
Starting point is 00:00:28 They deleted your comment? they're doing a competition to go over to Celine Dion, live somewhere, in Paris. And I commented saying, can I win this? Is a bit of a joke. A bit of a laugh. We're all friends in the industry. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:00:41 Trying to promote our show on theirs. You know, a bit of cross-pollination. We're friends with Tony. Yeah. And I was the only commenter, and then they deleted it. You're the only one that wants to go to Celine Dion. No, I think a lot of people would want to go, but they just, their audience doesn't comment on stuff, maybe. Okay.
Starting point is 00:00:56 So you're not going to win. What about you, Meg? What have you entered? A $500 grocery voucher. Oh, now that is good. That'd be good one, that. Through who? The New World.
Starting point is 00:01:07 It said it wants to know my experience. Oh, no, fuck. They always... Every time I do anything now, I get an email going, how did we do? Yeah. I don't know. You dropped me off to the place like I expected you to. Yeah, but then you think about it.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Oh, you insured my car while I drove it, even though I didn't ask for insurance. I mean, I didn't need to use the insurance. You offered it? I guess you were fine. But that's why I think that maybe I have a shop because nobody does these. True, maybe you're right, because I just swipe away. Even when you order Domino's Pizza, and then at the end it's like, do you want to win a TV?
Starting point is 00:01:36 No, just deliver my pizza, man. Yeah, and you know what? I think it's mostly I would only engage in those surveys if they did badly. I'm not going, oh, you did a great job. And maybe I should be doing that. But if I have bad service, like I go, I call a phone line, I go, 800 thing, and I get bad service. And then at the end it goes, do you want to complete a survey?
Starting point is 00:01:54 I'm going, yes, baby, I'm dobbin that person in. Right. That is true. My last big, you know, like, emails where I went to the place specifically were about bad service. You know what? My wife just recently yesterday sent a strongly worded email to a shoe shop because she got... Now, you guys tell me if she's in the wrong or the shoe shop's in the wrong. Okay. So she had a pair of slippers which were gifted to her three months ago. Hannah has worn them inside every night.
Starting point is 00:02:22 I'll agree every night for three months. Never outside. Yeah, you know when slippers outside. Otherwise they become shoes And then you can't wear them inside anymore The slippers are disintegrating They're fluffy slippers inside So they've got fluff on the outside
Starting point is 00:02:35 Fluff on the inside The fluff on the inside Has gone all matted and yuck The fluff on the outside is falling off She took them back to the shoe shop Were these expensive shoes like that? They were a hundred dollar slippers So they weren't cheap
Starting point is 00:02:48 And they're not Kmart job He's at 18 bucks No, no no So you'd expect a certain amount of quality, right? She took them back into the place three months later and they are not giving her a refund because they say that is general wear and tear
Starting point is 00:03:02 and not their problem. Now I would say that as a consumer under the consumer guarantees She won them for three months though If she did it up, you know what? Three months of wear every single day. I'm sorry, but I expect No, I expect shoes to last longer than three months
Starting point is 00:03:18 and she's only wearing them inside. You guys aren't that hard up that you need to take a pair of slippers that you've worn for three. But back to a store to get your money back. But I would say a better things to do. What if I wore a T-shirt every day for three months and I was like, when is it like, oh, well, that's fair enough that it's wearing tears?
Starting point is 00:03:36 Is it after a year? Or a T-shirt's different, I would say. I would say a shoe is more likely to get wearing-tier. The sole purpose, excuse the pun, of a shoe is to be worn, and especially a slipper, I would say most nights. Yeah, I wear mine every night. So do you expect a slipper to last three months? So you renewing your slippers every three months?
Starting point is 00:03:56 Fuck no. No, I expect the last longer, but I also don't expect you to go back. Yeah, yeah, that's the different. I think I'd be really gutted, but I don't know if I'd be like, give me my money back after three months. If I was a brand that was making slippers, and I found out that my slippers were only lasting three months out of general use, slippery use, not, you know, going outside into mud and stuff, I would want to know. Would she have still reported them with a bad review had they have replaced the slippers? No, of course not.
Starting point is 00:04:23 But then they're still going to be shit. Three months down the track, they're going to do that again. She went in saying that this product is not fit for purpose, and she would want store credit. She said, I understand that you're probably not going to give me a refund, but I want store credit and I'll buy something else because this product is not working and it's clearly a defunct product. And they said, no. Does she have overly sweaty feet to mat the... Not the no of? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:04:44 To matt the sheepskin? No. Yeah. So maybe you could get in touch with us on the Overthinkers' feedback on Instagram. What would you do? I just don't think if I saw a manky ass pair of slippers that I don't. I know I'd only be wearing three months. I don't know if I'd put them in the car and drive them to the shore.
Starting point is 00:04:58 You can't even get refunds if you wear a pair of shoes once out normally. Like, you know, like if I wear a pair of shoes, they're normally always like, well, no, you've worn them. You have to keep tags on clothes. Otherwise, as soon as the tags off, you're not getting a refund. Okay. Well, I'll sell a pair of shitty slippers to you to any day of the week, knowing that you're not going to return them. Must be nice. Wow.
Starting point is 00:05:18 There's a real insight to your household, though. No, Hannah. Something's not good enough. Hannah will make sure the wrong is rightened. And we've taken back TVs that we had a TV that was two years old, slightly out of warranty that wasn't working. We took it back and said the exact same thing. It's not for purpose.
Starting point is 00:05:35 When you buy a TV, you expect it to last longer than two years when you spend $1,000 and they refunded us. But it's outside of warranty. But you expect like a $1,000 piece of technology to last longer than two years. But I don't think that's what a warranty means. We guarantee it will work for two years and outside of that it doesn't. Bad luck. It might go for five. It might go for two years in one month. I disagree.
Starting point is 00:05:56 I disagree. Then what's a warranty to you? So a warranty, I would say, covers a lot of things. Yes, 100%. Like your mobile phones, like your things that get a lot of wear and tear. A television, I would say white wearfalls under the same thing, like a dishwasher, a washing machine, all that type of stuff. Where you spend good money on it, like $3,000. And if it's expiring, like, slightly out of warranty, I'm not saying in 10 years time or five years time. If it's slightly out of warranty, I think you have grounds to get a refund. It's slightly out of six months? How long, slightly? I think within the year.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Okay. So then why would they ever offer an extended warranty where you can extend it to three or five years? Everybody knows, clip, that that's a have. Never buy the extended warranty. Well, it sounds like you shouldn't if they're going to replace it even if it's out of warranty. Well, they did replace it. They replaced it out of warranty. That's what I mean.
Starting point is 00:06:47 So then why would anyone pay for an extended warranty if they're going to give you a new one anyway? Exactly. Do you think they just don't advertise it But if you're going to be ballsy enough to carry that shit Back into the store They're like, just give it to them Yeah, yeah, that's squeaky wheel, right? Yeah
Starting point is 00:07:00 I need to learn more about that I'm not a squeaky wheel And I reckon I've missed out on a lot of opportunities To get things for free or reason That will literally complain about anything That is not to scratch And she says that 80, 90% of the time People will rectify the mistake
Starting point is 00:07:12 We're just too scared to ask Yeah, so right, so right And I never do that Okay, so here we go Expected Lifespan As part of the Consumer Guarantees Act in New Zealand expected lifespan of whiteware
Starting point is 00:07:25 is 10 years. So you have a case, even if it's out of warranty and it's broken within the 10 years, you have a case to dispute it as not fit for purpose. So that's just whiteware. There's other stuff as well,
Starting point is 00:07:37 like televisions, which I think are slightly less. But even if they're out of warranty, you can dispute it. That's good to know. Don't even buy the extended warranty. Oh my God, I found a thing. Sorry, Meg, just quickly.
Starting point is 00:07:50 How long should your appliance last? This is how long you can have a dispute for. Desktop computers. If it expires within five years or breaks, you have grounds to get a refund. What about a microwave? Because I've got an issue with it. Eight years.
Starting point is 00:08:04 I have over six months it stopped working. I have to bang it every time to get it to go. So I'll go, go. And then if it doesn't go, and then I have to bang it. And then it will start going. And it was the most expensive microwave I could buy from Briscoes. I just never took it back because I don't even know where to start.
Starting point is 00:08:20 But did Meg and I need to still have the, receipt? Exactly. So apparently you need to have the receipt and it's up to the shop where you purchased it from, whether they give you a refund store credit or say they can have the option to send it back to the maker to get that fixed under a special warranty situation. You know, the best hack that I started doing was when you buy anything that's expensive and you get given the receipt, take a photo of it and then just add it to a warranties
Starting point is 00:08:44 folder in your phone. Because then every time you go, shit, do I have that receipt? And every time I go to my warranty and I'll scroll through. thinking I won't, I find it. I have the receipt. Okay, so you can take it back. Should I fucking do it? So under the Consumer Guaranties Act, you should be covered, but they might act on sending it back to the people that made it.
Starting point is 00:09:04 So does Meek have to embarrassingly carry her old microwaves through the doors? I'd send an email. I'd be sending an email to where you purchase it from, first of all. Just some other appliances. Quarters vacuums, five years. Corded vacuums, eight years. Fridges, 11 years. they should last.
Starting point is 00:09:22 And if they break before that, you can get a consumer guarantees. Television's eight years, dishwashers, ten years, washing machines, ten. Dryers, 11 years. And ovens, 15 years. What about slippers? No slippers, ovens. Damn. Okay, let's Google that.
Starting point is 00:09:39 How long? Should a pair of slippers loves? Can you say a hundred dollar pair of slippers? Because they're not cheap. Okay, absolutely. How long should a $100 pair of slippers? is last, used every night. Genuine wool as well.
Starting point is 00:09:55 Used every night. Every day indoors. Some of those, that were good. And still be okay to take back if unsatisfied. Okay. It's saying
Starting point is 00:10:14 so if yours have deteriorated quickly, the soul is separating holes of developing stitching coming undone, the wool fleece collapse seen, the slipper loses its structure. Yes. Yeah, all of the above. Six to 12 months of ordinary indoor wear, then take them back and raise it with the retail. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:10:33 Dan is correct. And it says here, under the Consumer Guarantees Act in New Zealand, when there's a minor problem, this is with appliances like we're just talking about, the retailer has a choice between fixing the appliance, replacing it, or taking it back and giving you a refund. If it's a serious problem, then you can choose whether the retailer you can choose whether the retailer replaces the product or takes it back and gives you a refund. So you can, if it's a serious problem, like the TV is completely broken, you can say I want a refund. I feel like if it's like a null-leaming, because then they take it to the top and they go, yeah, they're a big conglomerate, who cares.
Starting point is 00:11:05 But if it was just like a store and they go, nah, and you go, well, you have to. And they go, nah, it's my store, I do what I want. Yeah, but that's when you get the consumer guarantees involved. Oh, it feels like a lot of admin. What do they do? Well, they can, they're going to storm the doors with you? They set guidelines. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:19 So I don't know. That's right. I go, babe, can you do it? I mean, it's obviously, if you're rich like Clinton, you know, time is money, I guess. So just buy a new TV. But if you're poor like Meg and I, I'll do some emails. Today on the Overtinkers podcast. Dog racing.
Starting point is 00:11:37 Is it allowed depending on the breed? You know, they were getting rid of greyhound racing. Arguably the quest dogs on the planet. I guess that's why they race greyhounds. And they were getting rid of that. throughout New Zealand. I think they're still doing it in Australia. They raced a hundred corgis in Lithuania.
Starting point is 00:11:56 It's horrible. Because they've got really short legs, and they're not known for their speed. But they had to sprint to the finish line, and then they were in a costume contest, they did puzzle challenges, and then the loudest bark competition. So it wasn't all about speed.
Starting point is 00:12:12 They had a bunch of different categories. It's like Colgi Olympics, really, wasn't it? Yeah, so are we okay as long as they're doing funbos? I don't know. I tend to think if the animals having fun, who cares? How can you tell if an animal is having fun because sometimes dogs look like they're smiling but they're in pain? They're tails wag.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Tails wag. Tails wag. Tail tox. Don't they? I know. I don't know. I mean I think racing, Greyhound racing when you're I think the reason it was cancelled is because the mal-treatment of some of the dogs and the reasons that they were racing some of them to their death. You know, like they were racing so hard that they're
Starting point is 00:12:48 their heart stops working. If the corgis are just doing this one-time race, it might be quite fun for them because it's outside of the norm of just sitting at home. Maybe there needs to be a judge standing next to the thing going, as they're running, are their tails wagging? And if there's one that's not wagging its tail, come on out. He's not liking it.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Get him out. Disqualified, disqualified. He doesn't want to be running. Yeah, because they're not the fast dog in the world. But I thought I was interesting they're doing dog races. But yeah, I think you're right. It depends on the treatment outside of the race. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:13 You couldn't do it with cats because cats are just always pissed off, aren't they? I've seen they do with Jack Russell's. and then they put those little obstacles and they're like flying and then they're like just to these massive leaps that's good fun they used to have tux wonder dogs
Starting point is 00:13:23 remember that as a TV show? Yeah that wasn't cruel was it? Oh yeah they did love that yeah I think they're working dogs so they love the idea of like right they'll throw the toy out into the river and they've got to go find it and weave through the things
Starting point is 00:13:34 and the port of collies were just like more more more again again it's that organisation in America and Europe called crafts have you seen them online and it's like that like Tux Wunder Dogs but it's like a general competition and it's like the owner running them round
Starting point is 00:13:46 with the over like things and stuff. They look like they're having fun those dogs. Yeah. It's behind the scenes that you don't see the maltreatment of some of the owners that are being mean to them. Maybe the difference is if the dog that's doing the running around and doing the Tuxwanda dog, if they sleep inside,
Starting point is 00:14:01 maybe that's a good tell sign of whether they're being looked after or not. They're an outside dog in the kennel and then they're just being dragged along to the Tuts Wander Dog show every weekend. I think the difference a little bit is is that they're getting treats to go on obstacle courses, whereas Greyhounds, I think, can get starved, So they're super hungry trying to chase this thing. No, I don't like Greyhound racing.
Starting point is 00:14:19 No. No. And I think that's the reason it's been largely cancelled. Some people were saying, you know, I saw in a big article the other day, I think it was from, I don't want to get too political, but I think from a party that was like, we're defending Greyhound Racing. We want to keep jobs in New Zealand. And I was like, of all things to like, to build your, what is it, your case on. I feel like sausage dog racing would be fun to watch with their little legs. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Yeah, yeah, because they're not going real quick. And as long as their tails are waggon. Yeah, I think that's key. That's definitely key. Check the tail. Are we allowed to say where we're going now? Oh, ooh. Yeah, because by the time this goes out.
Starting point is 00:15:01 Yeah, I suppose. Maybe let people in on what's going on. Although, I guess if you listen to the radio show as well as this podcast, you'll end up hearing what's going on anyway. But Meg has to go a little undercover. She's wearing glasses. And when she puts them on, much like hopefully, Lee Clark Kent from Superman.
Starting point is 00:15:17 No one will know who she is and won't recognize her from the radio. The funny thing is, so we're going to surprise someone and Meg's got a disguise so the person we're surprising doesn't recognize it, like you say. You're already rearing this, like got the glasses on now. Well, I'll take, yeah, well that's the thing. Look, oh, here I am. She's gone full method. That's Meg now.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Yeah, yeah. I'm not sure about blue light. Do they guys give you guys headaches? So you're going to, we're going to a school to surprise a student, aren't we? Meg's dressing up as someone from the, um, Education. Department of Education, achievement and nurture. Is that what Dean stands for?
Starting point is 00:15:50 Have you made that up? I've made that up. Okay. Oh, good. So I'm already believing you. Thank you. I never got told to go to the Dean's office. I was quite a good boy in school.
Starting point is 00:15:57 No, that's not what Dean at school stands for. I'm just saying that I'm from that department. I've come in, and my name's Ms. Olivia. And I have been working closely with some secondary schools to review their student welfare and education. Her name has come up in a few reports, unfortunately. So we have to have a bit of a one-on-one. And she's going to think she's in trouble
Starting point is 00:16:17 But then, ha ha, he's going to come bearing good news Jokes The only time I think I ever got called to the dean's office Was because I was caught sharing a drink bottle During the Meninger Cockle Oh, during that time when anyone was paranoid You should not be sharing drink bottles Because men and jockel's going around
Starting point is 00:16:35 It's a horrible disease, you can die from it And one of the students, a little snitch, dobed me into the Dean I saw Dan giving his drink bottle to one of his friends for a sip Why were you so desperate to give you water to somebody while that disease was going around? Well, I think someone asked and I was like, yeah, have some of my first of my thirst. But I wouldn't give it to anybody, Willie Nilly. It was one of my best mates.
Starting point is 00:16:55 I'm like, he doesn't ask you. Who you guys hook up all the time? You're like, I don't know. I don't know. I know I've got his germs. He's fine. Yeah, yeah. Actually, was kissing band at that time as well?
Starting point is 00:17:03 Because we're kissing behind the bike sheds and at lunchtime. You can't share a drink bottle. You can't make out. Dan notoriously hooked up with a girl for like half an hour in one of his lunchtimes from his diary. True, that's right. Half an hour. No, that wasn't me. If she had it, you definitely got it.
Starting point is 00:17:16 You did. You guys hooked up. You, like, kissed all lunchtime for half a hour. And then you broke up with it the next day. That's right, yeah. She got too obsessed too quickly. She's not a human. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:17:26 That could be some sort of school record. I've never heard of anyone hook up for that long, unless they're trying to get a goodest world record. And I didn't even get patch rash. I think we're using tongue as well. It's disgusting. Anyway. Part of me remember you maybe did get pass rash or she did.
Starting point is 00:17:43 I don't remember this. Yes, I wish I had it. Somebody can write back in the podcast fan page. I mean, it must stop getting fun after 10 minutes. You're asking someone that does not remember it, so I don't know. I can't imagine it. I would have been exaggerating in the diet. You guys must have had long steamy hookup sessions when you were like teenagers.
Starting point is 00:18:02 I've done it for a long time. But it either will lead to somewhere else or eventually I guess it stops because, I don't know, you've got to go to the bathroom or something. It's a heavy petting, isn't it? 15 minute hookup. And you're still going. Like, you're coming up for breath. You're not just like locking in for 15 minutes.
Starting point is 00:18:18 I think you're just imagining we're just like pug. Just like a couple of slugs stuck together. No, no, no. If you waited out, half an hour is a long time. I'd imagine it would have been like kiss. 10 seconds. Move out. What are you doing for lunch?
Starting point is 00:18:30 Yeah. But like, I think time is different for teenagers. Like, when you're younger. Like, for us, like there's no way Jamie would have like half an hour to kiss you, obviously. But when you're like high school, It's the greatest thing ever. There's nothing else to do.
Starting point is 00:18:46 Let's demonstrate now, Meg. Okay, we're not going to actually kiss. But okay, so imagine we're hooking up. So we go and I come and... We're kissing. Okay, and break. So how did you find math? Math's difficult.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Oh, what did you have for lunch? Was that tuna? It was nice, actually. Do you want to come over for dinner on Wednesday? For 30 minutes. Yuck. What are your thoughts on Trump? Well, you know, I hate him.
Starting point is 00:19:21 Shut up and kiss me. Oh, I love you. Okay, we can catch your next up. That's gross.
