This is a podcast from Rover.
This is the Overthinkers podcast.
I hope we didn't catch that at the start.
Just me joking with a friend.
Or bullying.
He does it a lot, doesn't he?
Just throws shade at both of us during the songs.
Oh, you should just see in the video that Clint sent to me this morning about your dad.
See, and that's the thing.
They've got it, you know, it just pisses me off.
And it's water off of pigs back now.
Or ducks back, whatever it is.
You know, to caught yourself a pig, that's fine.
I see.
And you know what?
don't say anything to Meg that I wouldn't say to your face.
Yeah, that's true.
I feel like we all, at least, everything is, like, definitely.
That would be so much worse.
If I knew you guys said things behind my back,
they'd be genuinely hurtful.
But you never do, as far as I know.
It's all just to my face.
No, she sort of's no good.
Yeah.
She doesn't know about the chat.
Well, how thick is your pig skin at the moment, Dan?
Now, here's the thing.
I know what you've got.
There's something here.
There is, because Clint said to me, remind me to bring this up.
My skin couldn't be thicker, if I'm honest.
The amount of stuff I get.
Like I was at the gym yesterday and a man came up to me and said,
I recognised you because of your toe walking.
Yeah.
So, you know what?
Yeah, you go great cards, though.
Just fire away.
Fire away.
Okay, well, Asher.
I haven't heard from her since 19th of December.
Yeah, yeah.
Who is Asher?
She was a huge fan of the show.
I was living in the South Island and Nelson, Blenner.
She's going well.
Never heard of her.
And out of the woodwork, I get this voice message from her.
And I'm like, oh, what's going on?
What's happened?
Oh, my God.
I just had to message you because I'm driving from Christchurch to Nelson
in the absolute pouring rain.
And I'm so behind on the podcasts that I'm going all the way back.
And I've just gone to the point about Dan looking like Peter Noon.
And I've literally had to pull over in Turingian and thank God that I did because I swear to God,
I've just like almost pissed myself a little bit with how accurate it is.
Oh my God, Pet anoon.
Oh, shit, that is the best thing I've seen all year.
Love it.
Well, you know what's her name?
Ashley.
Asher.
Asha.
You look like fucking old, bloody.
Oh, fuck it.
I don't have anything.
And guess what?
She's going to hear that at about three years' time because she's so far behind the podcast.
So, yeah, that'll get.
True.
Honestly, it's one of those ones, you know, like people go,
oh, who do you look like?
Who do people say you look like?
I hate it.
I always feel like I get the worst.
It really humbles me, though.
It's good.
And people always, if it's always someone attract,
though, like there's a guy in love is blind and watching a different season now,
and he's like, oh, people say it look like Craig David,
but I don't see it.
Does you look like Craig David?
It was like a little bit, yeah.
But I'm like, you do see it.
It's why you brought it up.
It's why you told them that people say you look like Craig David,
because you agree.
Otherwise, if somebody said you looks like,
someone who was terrible
you wouldn't bring it up
yeah yeah I get the oldest one
Sarah Brightman I used to get all the time
oh yeah the opera singer she was in Phantom of the Opera
She played Christine
She was married to Andrew Lord Weber
Yeah it's anybody that just got
Blue Eyes and White Skin is basically
You do look like Sarah Brightman actually
Like you actually do
But I've never seen anybody look like
Oh that's a bad
She's holding up a photo
That is a terrible photo of Sarah Brightman
And you know it
You've found it's literally the first one
I went on Google
Okay we'll go in to find
Do I write hot?
Like now.
Look at her now.
Okay, Sarah Brightman,
2020.
Meanwhile, I've never seen anyone
look more like somebody else
than Dan and Peter known.
Obviously, Peter's got 20 years on Dan.
Yeah, but even then, I don't see it.
I think it's more.
If you're watching the video version of this podcast.
That's you in 20 years.
You'd enjoy that.
I actually genuinely, like, I can see it.
But I used to love Sarah Brightman because I saw...
She's amazing, talented woman.
Yeah.
And I...
Look, you.
Let me find the photo that I think people would.
I mean, this is not going to be good for radio because you can't see it.
But me, I want to put your mind at ease.
I used to get it at high school a lot.
Do you know what?
It might be time.
Yep.
It might be time to bring this back.
Is Produccaal listen to our podcast?
I don't think I look anything like her apart from.
She's got dark hair and blue eyes and white skin.
Producical.
I've got a new one for you.
It's you.
That doesn't look anything like me.
Clint, look.
Not that one.
Look, the cheekbones.
I get it.
I get it.
Uh, producer Carl's guest quest
Are we getting Sarah Brightman on the show?
Do we want Sarah Brynman or Peter Noon?
Peter Noon.
Can we start the guest quest clock?
Uh, it is Friday, just got 9.30 and see how long it takes for our producer Carl
to organise a chat with Peter Noon.
Sorry, I was talking to Lucy who's, um, yeah, Lukie.
What's happening, sorry?
Can you get Peter Noon?
My double game.
Because the crazy thing is, think of it.
You both sing.
Didn't he do radio?
You'd look the same.
I would be honoured.
Is he shocked by the resemblance and the similarities as we are?
Yeah, I mean, he's a, look, to be honest, he's not an ugly man.
Let's, let's, let's, he's actually quite an attractive old, older gentleman.
So I'm not offended.
You know what?
He's got great cheekbones.
Good on him.
I'm trying to see.
He's not planning on coming to New Zealand, unfortunately, because that would just.
Someone did message the other day of another New Zealand celebrity doppelganger I have.
And that was more offending.
Because I don't want to say who it is.
Because they're a woman.
Yeah.
But I don't want to say who it was.
Why?
But it's offensive.
To me.
Because you think you're hotter than them?
Well, not necessarily, but it's just the...
I can't say who it is, but it just is offensive to me.
Well, it wouldn't be offensive to you if someone said you look like Brad Pitt,
because you think Brad Pitt is better looking than you.
So you think this person is worse looking?
Yes, I think they're a bit of a bit of an ugly bugboat.
Do you think I'd be on to something?
in trying to find Peter Noon by emailing Peter at Petanoon.com.
Probably. Is that his email?
Yeah.
That is one of the most narcissistic.
That makes my job, is he?
Peter at Peter Noon.com.
Peter at Peter No.
And it'd be weird if it was like David at Peternoon.com.
I guess that'd be his agent.
Watch me fuck this up.
Literally.
I know why you didn't get an email back.
Carl, it was David at Peter Noon.com is what you send it to.
There's a phone number, but it might be his booking agent.
You'd just give him a call.
Do you want to give him, let's give his booking or agent a call.
Just do it.
Let's, I mean, we overthink things, and I've got something going around my brain,
so maybe I'll bring it to the table.
Today on the Overtinkers podcast.
We're overthinking.
Did it want the agent on?
Okay.
Did the name Richard get shortened to Dick?
Let me go with you.
If we're talking about names and getting them all confused,
I watch this guy on social media, and he's doing like a bit of a sketch.
And the guy, and it's got Thomas, and he goes,
oh, I reckon we just shorten mine to Tom.
And they go, oh, that makes sense.
And then it gets to William.
And they go, what about you, William?
What do you want to be shortened?
And he's like, oh, Bob.
And they're like, it's different.
It's different, but sure, because some Williams get called Bob.
And then he gets to Richard and he goes, dick.
And they're like, what?
I know.
And he's like, yeah, dick.
I call me Dick.
There are other things that I had Uncle John, but his actual name was Jim or James or something.
James gets called Jimmy a lot.
Yeah.
And I thought William was Billy, not Bob.
Okay, here we go.
William short for William is Billy.
Can I have some history music?
Thank you.
Because we're about to learn.
So.
Okay.
Here we go.
Here's Meg teaching us history.
not her strongest
history music
Meg what would you
your strongest suit would have been art at school
right
rank them art
No it wasn't in art
Oh
You wasn't in art
You wasn't in art
You were in English either
I wasn't
My best was
I once got an
An excellence in biology
I did pretty well in English
Believe it or not
I know
Religious studies I found
It's okay
Yeah
You should sort of make stuff up with that
And then I won the drama
Award
But I never took drama
You'd be good at drama.
There was a big uproar in the kids' moms and parents.
Oh, there was as with drama.
There's a real hierarchy with parenting with drama.
Because I won the award, but I never took a class.
So I don't know how I quite won that.
I remember when I got Jean Valjean and Lamer's, the school production,
there was a bit of a like, some of the mums were like,
why did he get it?
You know, the lead?
But anyway, I should prove them wrong.
Okay, I don't think this is what you want,
but anyway, this is what you're going to get.
Because it's royalty-free, and anything I play that is known,
we'll get this podcast pulled down.
Dick became a short name of Richard through a medieval English tradition of shortening names and creating playful rhyming variations.
In the Middle Ages, long names like Richard were commonly shortened to save time and handwriting in speech, turning Richard into Rich and then Rick.
Rhyming slang happened because people love to create rhyming pet names by swapping the initial consonant of the established nickname.
From Rick, the rhyme led to Dick.
And another variant, Hick, which eventually died out.
So William became Will, which became Bill, which you'll know some people were called Bill.
They're William.
Robert became Bob, which then – Rob became Rob, and that became Bob.
And Richard became Rick, which turned into Dick.
Isn't that interesting?
It was very immature, isn't it, back then?
Like, all these, you know, Robin Hood-type people.
But they must have called the penis a dick back then, didn't they?
Theodore, Ted and Ned, you want to know if they're in the media of the times they taught a people?
Yeah, when did a dick start?
When did Dick? When was Dick a colloquial term for penis?
Okay, when did it?
Talk amongst yourself.
Do you know what I do like?
When I ask my wife for this question, she goes, I don't know.
And then it bothers me.
And I just need an answer.
Even if it's wrong, just so I can get off my life.
Okay. The nickname Dick first appeared in print as slang for penis around 1890 to 1891.
Wow.
The earliest documented definition in 1891 with the Farmers Slang Dictionary,
which experts believe it originated as British military slang.
The Everyman Evolution Dick began as the whole like Richard, Richard, Rick Dick.
over time, Dick became a generic
placeholder term for an ordinary
fellow or an average man like every
Tom, Dick and Harry. And then
it changed linguistics
people believe the name for an average
man naturally transferred to mean
a man's anatomy. So similar
to Johnson, Willie or Peter became
colloquial placeholders for a penis.
And then Richards were like, damn it!
So you say, oh, it's just another dick.
And then it became, Dick became penis.
And then Dickhead. And then he just went from there.
Oh, that's really interesting.
That's the sort of stuff they need to teach in classrooms, don't they?
Yeah.
I've genuinely always wondered about the Richard thing.
Now I know.
No.
Richard to Rich, then to Rick and then to Dick.
Yeah, like Theodore, Ted and Ned.
So all the nicknames get shortened,
and then the medieval guys were like,
let's put a different letter in front.
So why don't we call Hannah's Fanny?
Why would we?
Do I want Hannah get shortened to Hanny,
and then Hanny gets shown to Fanny?
Well, maybe they do.
I always call it.
call Hannah Han.
So I guess you could go
Hand.
Richard to Dick
like
in medieval times.
Okay.
Here we go.
The answer is female names
did go through a similar medieval
rhyming and shortening patterns, but Dick came from
Richard. So Margaret became
Meg, became Pegg, and Helen
became Nell became mole or pole.
Mole.
You know I was once at a wedding.
So it did happen, but not
Hannah. Maybe Hannah's an old name.
Because a mole.
like a bad term for like a woman.
I was at a wedding once and there was,
I don't know what relation they were,
but it was a friend of ours
and there was a fight between two of the relations,
the relatives.
And he went up to her,
the guy went up to her and she'd been getting mouty,
he'd been getting mouty at her.
And he just went,
you fucking mole and tipped a bottle of beer
all over her head.
And she looked at him like this and went,
and said nothing and stormed off.
And it was the most awkward thing.
I think it was most awkward situation.
I wasn't privy to the original.
There was a bit of commotion going on in the corner.
It was like not during the ceremony.
It was during the reception.
I think the only way that I would not absolutely lose my shit
if that happened to me or do it,
you'd want to do it back and throw your drink on them,
I think the person must have slept with their partner.
And you go, fair play, I've been caught.
I just leave.
Have you guys had drinks put over your head before?
I have once.
No, but that's the thing.
Like if it was me,
If someone started pouring a beer, I would have moved away.
She stood there and looked him down, you know,
which is like the bear.
I remember the beer all coming down her face and her just looking evilly at him.
And then she did this huff and just walked off.
I had a man pour a bear or throw a beer in my face.
I'm so sorry about that, Meg.
I'm really sorry about that.
I was at a bar many years ago with my bestie Hannah.
And we were having a great night.
God, we're having a fun night.
Lots of inside jokes.
We had one guy come up to us.
We were sitting by ourselves and he,
was very drunk and he was trying to
hit on us. He was probably worse than down
when it came to honey on people and he said to Hannah
see I can tell you're a lovely girl
but I feel like you've got a bit of a funny face
and that just tickled us for the rest of the night because we thought it was
hilarious. We like... You've got a bit of a funny face
he said I can tell you're a nice person but you got a bit of a funny face.
What a horrible thing to say to a girl by the way? Out of the blue
and no one asked you to come over. Exactly we're just sitting there
having a girl's night but because we're...
That's why I love my friendship with her so much we can find the funny
and everything. So that to us was
honestly the funniest thing alive.
And then so we're,
that guy disappears. And then
throughout the rest of the night we're laughing about that.
And some strange random
guy, drunk as anything, saw
me and Hannah laughing
and assumed we were laughing at him. Hand on heart,
never saw the man in my life, had no idea why I'd
laugh at him, was in that kind of weird.
You know when guys are just so drunk, they should be kicked out
and they're not there? They're not there. They're in a haze.
You can see they're not there behind the eyes.
Came over to me, picked up my drink.
threw it in my face
and said stop laughing at me
had no idea
who, like again, like
why don't even know
what would be funny
and then I burst out laughing then
because I looked at Hannah
and I was like
I'm just had a drink thrown on me
and I thought that was the fucking funniest thing
God you guys took some of that night
exactly
and I just thought it was like
yeah I did get upset
it was a beer
it was Hannah's beer
like a whole beer
just thrown to my face
does she
have a bit of a funny face
no she does it
she's really gorgeous
That's why it was funny.
If it was real, it would have been really sad.
A funny face.
It would have been really sad.
That is horrible, isn't it?
I could never.
I could never go up to someone.
Unless they'd provoked me in some way.
That's why you could tell you.
And he was stumbling around.
In the end, security chucked him out
because you can't just throw a beer on a random girl's face.
And I did nothing to him.
But that's why I found that funny because I was like,
this is the most fucked up night.
We went home and got Burgerfield.
You could have punched him.
I know, and I kind of wish they did.
Slacked him or something.
Yeah, I only punched one, someone once.
Clint, I know you've punched someone once.
Yes, with Jamie.
Have you punched someone, yeah, once many years ago?
Tell me about him.
Oh, no, I won't.
I don't know if I could really talk about it, but it was a friend of mine.
Was it satisfying?
Very.
Okay.
Okay, did they deserve it?
Yes.
Do you want to know the exact situation?
No, no, we don't want to if it's uncomfortable.
No, I won't tell you.
Yeah, but it was essentially they were talking behind my back about my back.
about me to someone
It was at school time
Yeah
Well maybe we had just finished school
I don't know
I was still a teenager
Yeah
Anyway and we went out to the movies
And he was there
This guy
And I saw him and he'd been talking shit
Shut up
And he was just a little wedy
He looked like
I'm Sid the Sloth
We used to say it about that behind his back
Oh well it sounds like he
Was getting bullied by you
And he walked past me
And I was with someone
I can't remember as well
I'm at best mates
He walked past me
And said there's that fucking
F
What you're
You can't censor...
Oh, no, no, the F word.
The other F word.
Bad, bad, bad, F word.
The other F word.
A group of sticks.
Yes.
And I turned around and went up to him and said,
don't you say that about him and just went...
Oh, are you sure it wasn't about you?
I think he was saying it about you, mate.
I think it was calling you.
The F.
Could have been.
It doesn't matter anyway, no matter what.
He would have been laughing.
Don't you say that about my friend?
He's like, no, I was saying that about...
And honestly, he went down like a little.
sack of tits and I went
and then I stood over him like this
sack of potatoes I stood over him like this
and I said watch your back
and walked off. Daniel you've got a sense
to yourself oh sorry beat that then
and I did that I said watch your
like that and walked off and oh you felt good
and I bleed it I blud on my
knuckles from like hitting it so hard
how exciting I know
and he never bothered me again
no you never bothered your friend
again yes that's true
Okay
I thought that I leave you
A teary eyes
Guess the thought
Was to one there
Oh
Oh man
No beef or quefe
No people quefe
No
No that was last
Can we beat the C word
I just used
Because we can't
Oh yeah
Oh yeah
Yeah
Oh yeah
Friday
Well the problem is
I can edit this
Podcast audio
But the problem is
Because it goes up as a video
That's now a Brady
Job
Okay Brady
I ask one thing of you
No edits
You just need to beat the C word
That happened about
Two minutes ago
Okay can you do that
Did you say the C word
Yes I said it
What C word
That was warranted
There's many sea words
What C word was it
A racist one
No
I don't know if I was a C word
Because I'm not racist
That was the one
That is derogatory
Towards female genitalia
Okay yeah
I think I know the one
And genitalia
And lose it.
Thank you, Megan.
Wait, why do we have to,
we've said that,
people have said that on the podcast before.
We're beeping it now.
It was quite jarring.
I think when you say,
oh, he's a good cunt.
That's different.
He said,
he's going to beat that now.
Wait,
so we beep.
Now it's two beeps.
Beep.
All right.
Does that one of us want to have,
since we're doing it?
Meg, do you want to go?
Oh, go on then you can't.
Oh, you.
Do you know who?
Do you know who loves saying that?
No, I've got to edit it.
You can't.
Oh, stop.
Honestly.
Liam, who's our Irish listener
who's like number one fan
or at least top 10
he loves us into the podcast
and he loves that New Zealanders
use the C word as a term of endearment
so now every time
he messaging me goes
Clean you come
Yeah
Right
I self-sensored that one so that's all good
Thank you that one's fine
I guess my phone already
Yeah I won last week so I get to go first
God it took you that long to come up with that
Okay
Oh either really long with that's really really
I'm going to have to push.
Yeah.
Okay.
Push it.
Good luck to a door.
Real good.
Almost.
It's almost.
Like, part for fuck.
I'm dizzy.
I think I hold my breath while I do them.
Honestly.
It's fun around and I've seen stars.
Okay.
Thank you.
See you guys.
Bye.
See you next.
Bye.
Attawaz.
