The Edge Breakfast - OVERTHINKERS freestylin

Episode Date: July 21, 2026

When a news story broke about amateur freestyle rap blowing up in Europe, Dan and Producer Carl took it as their personal invitation to spit bars live on air. It turns out that improvising over a beat... is way harder than it looks, and the attempt spiraled into absolute chaos, absurd lyrics, and uncontrolled laughter ridiculously fast. You are definitely not ready for how off-the-rails this attempt gets.

Starting point is 00:00:00 This is a podcast from Rover. This is the Overthinkers podcast. Morning, you got Cal with you still. Sorry. Hey, this is a podcast, Cal. It could be the night by the time they're listening to this. It could be middle of the morning, could be early hours. You could listen to a podcast anytime. I don't care.
Starting point is 00:00:19 But welcome along to the show. Still no Clint and Meg, but they are back. I have it on good authority that they're back tomorrow. Oh, both of them? Yeah, I believe. Well, I think definitely Clint, who knows about Meg? I think she hopefully will be back tomorrow as well. Just looking through the news this morning.
Starting point is 00:00:36 And I came across the story, which I wish I'd come across earlier, because we've been doing this thing with Meg called, what do we call it, Carl? Freestyle Fridays where Meg would rap a song. Freestyle, and we'd give her a topic. There's a news story that's come out of, I think it's out of France, saying that the freestyle rapping game, or the amateur rap game in France, is on the rise
Starting point is 00:01:00 and in Europe more people are starting doing rap than any other genre of music which is telling them that rap is going to have a massive resurgence in the next few years
Starting point is 00:01:11 I feel like rap's pretty bad has it but it's pretty big I think it's just not as I mean we're on the edge we don't really play much rap music but rap is sort of one of those things like classic rap
Starting point is 00:01:23 like I guess you would say Eminem's a classic rap artist you don't really have rap artists anymore, do you? They're sort of clouded in like R&B and hip-hop. Oh, I see what you mean. Yeah, but like rap is sort of like a early 2000s thing. Yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:01:39 And also, like, it's one of those things where I feel like when you think of it, like, oh, anyone could be a rapper because you don't have to have like a good voice, you know, you just have to be able to spit bars, but arguably way harder. It's so hard. Meg's proved it, and I can't, I don't prescribe to be any better than Meg. I wish we had
Starting point is 00:01:55 some audio of one of Meg's previous attempts freestyle Friday. Oh, we do, actually. Here it is. Oh, do we? Hang on a second. Here, here it is. This is Meg. Can you hear it? No.
Starting point is 00:02:09 Oh, here we go. My name is Francis. I go to Fungeroy Boys' High School. I've got heaps of meats. I live in Fungeray. I love this guy. And I grew up on Taupo. Pia!
Starting point is 00:02:24 They almost got a million. 630,000 views. I love Francis. Francis was a pioneer. Oh, he was so good. And you know what I liked about him? is his he didn't care about rhyming. You know, at last, there's a rapper that took rhyming out of it
Starting point is 00:02:38 and just said what they thought. And that's what I love Francis. Well, there's also the argument that raps don't need to rhyme. It's more just about kind of poetry. But I feel like if you're an amateur, you need a rhyme to have some kind of rhythm. So I thought we could try this on the Oethinkers podcast today, Cal. I know this is good or worse. I know, but neither am I.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Neither am I a good one. Do any part of me look like I'm a good rapper? Freestyle. I could write some lyrics and rhyme it and be fucking good. But make me freestyle it and I'm like, honestly, the shittest. So I reckon you go first. Okay. So we've got like a generic beat.
Starting point is 00:03:15 I'm going to give you a topic. I'll give you something really easy to talk about. I just like, I don't think I could do a rhyme. How long? Like, okay, do I just like do my best? Just honestly push through. If you stuff it up, keep going. I want at least 30 seconds a wrap.
Starting point is 00:03:29 Okay. Your topic this morning, Cal. as being cool. Oh my God. Okay? So you could do anything. Just talk about being cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:40 Uh, yeah. Yay. I'm cool. I don't need to go to school. Yeah. Dan, stop looking at me. You fucking fool. Uh.
Starting point is 00:03:53 School. Keep my name out your mouth. Uh. You're not cool enough. What a spout. Eat my ass. Oh. Oh, God.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Touch some grass, yeah. Uh. Got some. I don't think any rapper in the history of rap has gone. Eat my ass. Touch some grass. Yell. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:18 It's hard, man. It is hard. That's not easy. It is hard. Props to Francis, man. I think you'll get a chance of redemption shortly, but I'll get a go. Here's a go. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:26 So maybe the same thing and then give me a topic. Okay. Your word that you are starting with is... Oh, no. I want a topic, not a word I start with, because then I have to make up a whole thing. Just give me a topic. Okay. Well, you fucking gave me a word.
Starting point is 00:04:40 Cool. No, but it's a topic, isn't it, about being cool? Yeah. All right, here we go, yeah. Eating chuff. Yeah. I don't know it wasn't slither in. I was in Hufflepuff.
Starting point is 00:05:02 That's because I like eating lots of chuff. That's not bad though. That's not bad. Yeah. Yeah. You think it's an ass? I'll give that a pass Cause put it in my mouth
Starting point is 00:05:17 I'll have a lot Puff, puff, puff I call it chuff I'm going Toot Toot honk honk Come at me now I want to Oh nah
Starting point is 00:05:38 Nah No I can go You go on something Toot blah blah Something now Yeah Some people Wait what we could try
Starting point is 00:05:57 What we could try Is do like one It's so hard Honestly, I feel sorry for me because he made her do that for a week and it's so fucking difficult. Why don't we try one where like we go back and forth? Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:09 Yeah, okay. Carl, give us a topic. Okay, so Cal and I'll go back and forth with a thing. That's a good idea, Cal. I don't think it's going to be any easier. Right, so this is, yeah, okay, cool. Beef burgers. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:24 What the fuck rhymes with burger? We don't have to just... So much rhymes with beef, though. But you don't have to say, just start with beef burger and then we go on from it. Oh yeah, okay. All right. Who wants to start?
Starting point is 00:06:39 I'll start. Oh, God. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm so hungry. What do you want? Yeah. I'm hungry. I'm famished.
Starting point is 00:06:55 I'm so hungry I might commit a murder. Oh, I'll get a beef burger. Yeah. Oh, cheese and peasant. Nah, keep away your dickles Lettuce, tomato, cucumber You know, fucking, oh fuck What'd you say? Cucumber
Starting point is 00:07:16 Oh bitch, give me your number I like to take your whole man fucking your thumber Oh, I'm so, honestly, Scott. We suck. Dude, that's just hard, bro. It's really hard. And you can see the people that are doing it online, like those people that
Starting point is 00:07:35 they'll do his stand-up comedy. There's that one guy that does it and he goes up on stage and he asks like a whole load of questions of people in the audience and then he writes a, he does like freestyle a rap about it. It's incredible how he does it. Wait, is that the guy that is the auditude singing or it's a rapper? No, it's a rap. He does
Starting point is 00:07:52 rap. I mean, I'm sure there's other people that do it. But just thinking on your feet, I mean, I should be good at it. We should be good at a cow because we do radio. And unfortunately no, not the case. That's actually really, really hard. That was hard. That was hard listen that last one. Yeah, sorry about that.
Starting point is 00:08:08 Brilliant. Anyway, Megan Clinton are back tomorrow. We'll shut the fuck up. Thanks for listening. And if you stuck through it this far, you are honestly a saint. Good on you. Goodbye. This is the Overthinkers podcast.
Starting point is 00:08:22 Rover. Music, radio, podcasts.
