That's like somebody says, I'm going to run a marathon, but I didn't train and I'm just going to go and, you know, do it, whatever.

So you're not going at a lightning pet. pace by any means. But I feel it more today than yesterday. Oh my gosh. My legs are really like 50% theoretical at this point. It's kind of, it is kind of amazing. All right. So yesterday we spoke to my friend Barry McGuire. We're going to continue that conversation today. Barry McGuire, I can't say this when he's sitting here in the studio. So I'm glad I can say this now. He's a big deal. Like, he has been a tremendously successful businessman. He was best friends with David Wilkerson for 40 years.

He's an amazing person. And so, anyway, I will be talking to him following this segment. We recorded it yesterday. And one of the best things about him, when I knew he was coming on the show a couple days ago, it reminded me I had to wash my car. That's the most important thing. Important, yes.

Yeah, because he's a good. Barry is known in the car. If there's anybody, like, really into cars, they almost certainly know Barry McGuire. He's like the big celebrity in that world and has been for decades. McGuire. Yeah, McGuire. So, but anyway, so he'll be on following this segment.

And then we will continue my conversation with Malachi O'Brien. Now, today, literally now, Malachi's back home, running his final consecutive marathon, the 153rd consecutive marathon. So we will play what we recorded yesterday before he flew home. And the explanation of why it's 153 and not 150. Yes, and all that jazz. That comes up. So stay tuned.

That's what you have to look forward to today. Then I should remind people, I don't know if I've really talked about this. The Socrates in the city event on March 30th. is I don't know how you could possibly overstate the idea that this young woman, Yonmi Park, defected from North Korea. Now, if you're not really familiar with how satanically evil and atheistic, I mean, when I say evil, ladies and gentlemen, you don't even want to think about what it is like to live there.

I can't. In other words, there are levels of evil, okay? You would much rather live in Nazi Germany unless maybe if you're Jewish up until a certain year. You'd much rather live in the Soviet Union if if, if, but North Korea in the last 20-something years, I just, my heartbreak. So we are going to be be, I'm going to be interviewing Yonemi Park. She and her family escaped by the grace of God. And I'm interviewing her here in the city, March 30th. Obviously, we're going to do the live stream again, if you want to live stream it. Ladies and gentlemen, this is serious. We do this every spring. We focus on the fact that there are people in the world, particularly in our own hemisphere.

This is the shock for most Americans, that people not very far from here. If you're Malachi, you could run there. So there was actually a report on Honduran TV. I think we have that clip. Let's see if we can play that clip from Honduran TV. Two-thirds of the country is in a food crisis.

We are talking of 400,000 small producers' families, and each family has at least five members. there are 3.2 million Honduras living in a situation of poverty and hunger. Okay, again, hard to believe, but it's happening. Here's the good news. The good news is that Americans typically step up for no practical reason, other than we feel like it's the right thing to do, other than the fact that almost all Americans and all people in the West

have taken in this Christian view, whether they're Christians or not, that if we can help somebody who's suffering, we do it. And we have done that as Americans. Now, if you're a Christian, you understand why, because God commands us to do this. He blesses us to be a blessing. So whatever you have, your freedom, your talent, your money, whatever you have is a gift from God, and he wants us to use it for others. You may remember that I wanted to continue my conversation with my friend Barry McGuire. He has a new book out called Ignite Your Life, Defeat Fear with Effortless Faith. Now, I want to be clear, on the radio, doing this program, I get a million books. Albin and I, we get a million books by some Christian author, whatever, and they're kind of self-helpy kind of books. This sounds like it might be one of those books, but let me tell you, it ain't. Ignite your life, defeat fear with effortless faith, is the real thing.

It's scripture. It is scripture, and you are my friend, Barry McGuire. And so I want to say, in case people miss the other part of the program, you've come out with this book, Ignite Your Life, which is about living out your faith. And you and I have this, you know, we kind of have a mutual background in David Wilkerson. Yours obviously goes way back beyond that. But the point is, for you and me, Christian faith is a genuinely joyful adventure. We're not just saying that.

But we meet a lot of people for whom that's not true. And I think that they're kind of thinking, you know, I don't know why, but it just feels like a dull assignment. And if it feels like a dull assignment, something ain't right. And so you have kind of summed this all up, the answer to it in this book, Ignite Your Life, Defeat Fear with Everless Faith. So, Barry, welcome back. And let's talk about what you say in the book. Well, first off, it's not so important what I say. This is a book of scripture heavily.

What I say is meaningless. I just give trappings to it. I put it in perspective what the scriptures say. But every chapter is filled with scriptures at the end of every chapter. All the scriptures are listed. If you just read the scriptures from this book, didn't pay attention to what I said. It will change your life. Yeah, just in case anybody's worried that this is slightly nonscriptural.

This is not a self-help. The scriptures are there to prove to you that this is God's idea of what it is to walk with him. That's the key. I know you love Romans 828. Let's talk about just for a moment. God is truth. He doesn't lie. And yet this scripture is so underappreciated.

God, I think it's the second most important scripture in the Bible. He's saying from now, now it's you're a Christian. You know this, but I'm talking to her right. He's saying now that you're a Christian, for now until you get to him. heaven, I'm going to make everything, not most things, everything in your life, work together for good. I know you may say, well, it doesn't work good for me, whatever. Well, he says he'll make it work together for good when you love him, first love, nothing separating you. God, you own me, I love you, I don't want anything separating. It's that kind of love. And second, you live for my purpose.

When you live for God's purpose, his purpose, there's no argument. His purpose is to seek and save the loss. When we live every day to seek and save the loss, we step into this incredible promise that he's making everything good. That's the end of fear. 80% of us Christians are living in fear. That stops fear like that when you receive it for what it is. And I can give you a lot of stories on that. So I live every day to move everybody every day closer to Jesus. That's the theme of our ministry.

And the bad stuff happens. But when bad stuff happens when you're living in that promise, It looks bad, but it's not. It's good stuff. We're going to talk about the ultimate bad stuff, ladies and gentlemen. This is important because I didn't give you a proper introduction, but you're the third generation president of McGuire's car wax. So you are a very successful businessman.

And you had a show Car Crazy that was on TV for 18 years on Discovery Channel Networks globally. So a lot of people would look at you and they would think, oh, yeah, it's easy for that, like, rich, successful guy. He's had it all. He's got a tan. He lives in California and Arizona. What does he know about suffering? And here he is talking about Romans 828. All things work together for good, even the bad stuff, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Well, I happen to know, and you've been very public about it, that four years ago, you and Karen lost your 49-year-old daughter. Yeah. So now I can't think of anything more difficult than that. And you, we don't need to dwell on it, but everybody has suffered.

And I don't want anybody to think to get this fake impression that there are, you know, there are two people here talking about joy that we have in suffering. I've got my stories, but your story with your daughter, that was four years ago. Well, yeah, and, you know, we've had struggles throughout our lives. I'm convinced that God gives you something. He's doing it to build your faith and preparing you for the next one. And if you handle it well, he gives you a bigger one. And then he gives you a bigger one.

Let me give you one. This will probably speak to a lot of people. And, you know, I was in the hospital. You know, I was in the hospital dying. It didn't phase me. So this is 13 years ago. That was now going to tell you another one. My family, half my business was owned by family members and they sold to a joint venture company.

Okay. And they took over my board. and I found out the next morning they're throwing me out of my business. Now, when was this? It was 2008. I was 65 years old. My life's work, my family business, my heritage, my reputation, my testimony. That's Barry McGuire the Christians.

Where's God now? I mean, everything, it was gone. I had, there was nothing I could do. There was nothing. I was toast. My life is over, okay? This is true story. God's hearing me right now.

I didn't waver. my joy stayed strong i i i prayed a very short prayer to god i said god i asked you for nothing and i did it with a chuckled my voice because i've been through somebody you don't get there right away but i said chuck i said god i asked you for nothing because of two things one you know i live for your purpose i share you everywhere i go already you know that and i know you keep your word and you said that when we live for your purpose you make everything good and so i went right to sleep god's hear me now this is exactly what happened. I went immediately to sleep. I did not toss and turn.

I never woke up. I woke up fresh. I went into my attorney's office at this conference call, okay, that all the board members, and within eight minutes, within eight minutes, God completely discombobulated my joint venture partner for something that he'd done

five years earlier and turn the whole thing upside down. This is like stories from scripture where God is constantly testing us and testing our faith and trying to get us to actually believe what he says in the Bible. But here's the key. Everybody who's a Christian says, oh, I believe what it says in the Bible. Well, do you? When tough times come, no, they don't. Do you live it out? And I can tell you that I don't instantly, when some bad thing happens to me, it takes me some time to say, hey,

wait, wait, wait, wait a minute. God has a plan. God is. God is. is in this thing that looks like a bad thing. He can weave this into something beautiful. How will I trust what he says? Now, folks, that's the only way to live. But, Barry, you have lived this way. This makes it effortless. Okay, almost everybody watching us right now.

You believe Proverbs 3-5. You quote Proverbs 3-5. Trust the Lord with your whole heart. Don't depend on your understanding. And all your ways acknowledge him. And he would direct your path. What a promise. He will direct your path, but 80% of all Christians are living in fear.

So, I mean, we quote these scriptures, then we don't live them. But then we say, God, I'm going to believe, but then we fail. Every time we try to do it on strength, I hear it so many times praying for a brother that are struggling. You just have to have faith. Just trust God more. That sounds really righteous. But how do you do that? How do you do it?

That's the big question. Romans 828 tells you how you do that. Because when you live for him, he makes a good. everything work for good and that makes makes faith effortless you defeat fear effortlessly it is a joy and i've been doing it now for 50 years i've been through every kind of struggles and and and god's there and when bad things happen to us now care and i laugh we literally laugh we never ask for help anymore with god we don't we say to god um this is going to be interesting uh you're what are you up to now? Are you teaching us something new? Or is there somebody new coming into our lives that this

opportunity will give us so we can, you know, you get a flat tire. You're on your way to an important meeting, right? And you get a flat tire. The default is, oh, thanks a lot, God. Where are you? I mean, you know, why? Stop thinking about that. Start thinking about, okay, God's after something. And then the AAA guy comes, and you're engaging him and loving on him, and he opens up and tells you his problems you fight yourself praying with the guy and then the meeting got canceled he didn't have to be there i've got a million stories that's the way god works you you follow the nudge i call it you follow the dudge and live in the fog you we all know the nudge when the holy spirit is prompting you to call somebody in pain or pray for a secular friend that you're sitting to cross a cup of coffee with and you think oh he'll think i'm a fool or we don't have

time those are all excuses folks when you follow the nudge you live in the fog you live in the fog you live in the favor of God. You live in the promise of Romans 828 that tells you you don't have to worry about it. You don't have to conjure up faith. You just have faith. And that, let me tell you, that will ignite your life. I was going to say, like, I don't know anybody who's not looking for this. I just think there are a lot of people that they kind of have this idea that this can't be right. Oh, it is. And I want to say, ladies and gentlemen, this is God's will for you. This is not some thing that may be, this is his will for you. We'll be right back talking to Barry McGuire.

The book is, Ignite Your Life, Defeat Fear with Effortless Faith. Sounds like a lot of baloney. Here's the problem. It's 1,000% true. And there are people out there that they just say, I don't know, I don't know. And I believe you have to be around people who live this way. Because unless you see it, you can't believe that there people live this way. So I began that when I I first became a Christian in 1988. I was at St. Paul's Dary Ann.

We've had my friend Keith Junta on the show. I saw people who lived this way. And then we all started going to Times Square Church. And the people at Times Square Church tended to live this way. David Wilkerson, who was your friend for 40 years, lived this way. And I remember he preached a sermon. We talked about it at dinner last night. The sermon was titled Right Song, Wrong Side.

I love it. And I was so affected by this sermon that over 20 years later, when I was asked to preach at Times Square Church, I said, I'll bet you most of the people in this room have never heard this. So I halfway preached that sermon again. And that sermon sums up what we're talking about. David Wilkes, I mean, this is such a brilliant idea. He says that when the Israelites were trapped at the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army's

coming down on them and they're freaking out. Well, we know what happened. God parts the Red Sea. They go through. They come out the other side. The seas come back together. their Pharaoh's army is drowneded. And then when they're on the other side of the Red Sea, they sing the song.

And then they sing. They sing the song praising God and praising God. And David Wilkerson preached a sermon talking about they should have sung that song of deliverance before God delivered them. Because if you know who God is, you praise him in the midst of trouble. When bad things happen, you say, ah, God is up to something. as friends, they're perfecting us. I thank God for every bad thing that's happened in our lives. Karen and I both are, because we see, our growth thwarts are in times of trouble.

We don't grow when we're on the mountaintop. It's during those tough times that we learn who God is. I thank God for all the tough times, including the death of our daughter. She's in heaven celebrating. She's having the time of her life right now. And I'm going to be with her for eternity. So, you know, a thousand people came to her funeral, and I spoke at the funeral. there's a video of her funeral okay

Nicole McGuire's celebration of life 11,000 people have watched that video and hundreds have been saved by watching the video of a funeral you know why because it was like I knew most people watching me would not be Christians and I wanted to say that my joy is not affected by circumstances you know there's an interesting happiness and joy we can be happy and unhappy throughout every day

that's circumstantial joy When you have joy, you just know God is there. It never leaves you. You have joy no matter what the world throws at you. You have joy. Folks, that is God's gift to you. How do you do it by living for his purpose? Not your purpose.

You live for his purpose. And we should talk about how easy that is. It's not scripting and memorization and studying and all this, our personality. God didn't say going to the world all you who are gifted. And he didn't say all you go to the world and pray. or go in the world and read your Bible. He said, go and tell people about Jesus. That's for all of us.

And he didn't say read a script. It's nothing about scripting. In fact, the scripture is exactly the opposite. In Mark 1311, he says, don't prepare. Get this, you don't have to prepare. You can't prepare for these conversations. You and I both talked about last night. You never know where these conversations are going to go.

And this is, I get to point two. Well, that's the moment it feels phony. The person on the other side, They're going to smile. Exactly. And they will endure you as you try to share your faith. But the number one thing they're looking for, I mean, let's be honest. Yes.

They're thinking, if there is a God, I'm going to smell love, joy, authenticity. As soon as it's a little phony, a little religious, a little forced, they're out. They know already something doesn't smell. It doesn't smell like what I'm looking for. Absolutely. They're looking. God created them to look for this. God created them to long for this. And they know at that moment, this is not it. This is a religious person. They got all the answers and they're trying to hit me over the head or trying to kind of arguing me into this thing. And they will smile politely, but it doesn't work. Do not argue. I never argue with anybody. And I've never offended anybody ever. I've never been persecuted. People don't get mad at you when you tell them God loves them. I mean, they can hardly believe it. But you just tell them God, loves them and this this whole thing of loving God when God loves us he's salvationing us the whole purpose of his love is to salvation us every

conversation you have folks with other people God is wanting to salvation those people through you every conversation that's what life's all about and when you allow God to salvation people through you as you're loving on them and and and don't put a timeline for salvation just love on them and the Holy Spirit will confirm your love and they'll know you're genuine and everybody's searching for love hungry desperate for love and when you love the Holy Spirit touches them and i got to tell you complete strangers will open up to you within three four minutes they'll start telling you things they won't even tell their best friends and here's where the fun comes the Holy Spirit

Luke 1212 the Holy Spirit gives you the words to say when you need them and all of a sudden it's coming through you scriptures you haven't thought of for years and you know it's the Holy Spirit speaking through you and you see the life being changed in front of you folks that ignites your life that's what this book is about you know what you're saying uh barry because i think i think about this stuff all the time they're also Christians that they have this kind of hand-wringing attitude about evangelism I have been to and they think like if i don't say the right thing oh this person's going to go to hell and so they're anxious yeah

So part of what we were just talking about is people feel like, oh, when it comes to God's stuff, I can give myself permission to be anxious. And you think, well, here's the problem.

The scripture says, be anxious for nothing. So your neighbor's salvation, your relative's salvation, that's very tempting to be anxious about that. Absolutely. I did it all the wrong way. And, you know, I started out thinking, I have to get them saved on the spot. So now that adds extra pressures. I got to get them through the, you know, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the, the thingers prayer and everything right now are a failure, and I felt that way. It has nothing to do with timing, nothing to do with timing, as you, he's in his hospice bed. So I knew what he wanted to talk about. He told his wife, I have to talk to Barry McGuire.

so I knew he was ready. So we were actually, we had an afternoon off. We were going to go to the theater to see a movie. And I said, Karen, you drive. I got business to do. So I called Jack. And I said, hi, Jack, how are you doing? Act like I didn't know anything.

He said, I'm not doing well. I said, what's going on? He explained the situation. I'm in the hospitalist's bed. I'm dying. And I said, and can we talk about God? Yeah. You know, he's ready for you.

And I led him through the sinner's prayer. And then I had him repeated again, just to make sure. And then I said, guess what, Jack? We're going to spend eternity together. What? I said, we're going to spend eternity. You get there before me, but we're going to spend eternity.

He said, oh, man, that's great. He died a few days later. Now, I explained to people, it took me about 12 minutes to late him to the Lord. No, no, no way. It was God's timing. It took me 50 years. See, that's okay. I've been sharing, I've been chumming with him.

Right. For 50, not preaching. Yeah. Living it. Sharing or loving on him. Throw, I just throw out little bits of me. Every time I whiz somebody, I fight, it's like sport. I find a creative way to mention God without raising their eyebrows.

So it's just fun. Actually, I really was not going to bring this up, but what you just said, what you just said, it's kind of crazy. Your book is titled Ignite Your Life. I mentioned that my book, which tells the story of my life, coming to faith, it's called Fish Out of Water, brand new in paperback. This book is dedicated to a dear friend Cheris Khan who went into God's presence a few years ago. But my relationship with this friend over the decades is exactly what you said. In 1988, you know, she thinks of me is the Yale graduate guy, the witty guy, you know, the guy who's writing fiction, Yaddo McDowell, this kind of literary world and stuff. And a lot of friends when I came to faith, you know, they thought, this is kind of weird and they kind of backed away.

She was always just a friend. And we'd get together and I would just share the crazy stories of my life. I would do the chumming thing that you're talking about. But it was never, ever, ever anywhere near being forced. Like, hey, you need to make a decision or you need to. It was just love. Scudge timing. And she died young.

She died a few years ago in her 50s. A few years before that, she tells me out of the blue, I'm a Christian now. Now, ladies and gentlemen, this is a super liberal Brooklyn literary genius. These kind of people don't tend to hang around in a world where that's even something you say. And I said, excuse me? What are you talking about? I almost didn't believe it myself because I said, as time passed, I recognized that my kooky elliptical stories, which were designed, I'm being honest, to draw her to faith

because I love this woman so much. She's such a dear, you know, in life you meet some people that's just the dearest souls in the world. So Cheras Khan, she was with Harper's Magazine. she came to faith and at her memorial service, talking to people who were not on the same page, I was privileged to be able to share a little bit about this. So I dedicate my book, Fish Out of Water to her. But she in my life was proof that what you're saying is true. What you write about in your book, Ignite Your Life, This Works.

And it ignites your life even more. Yes. It's like, wow. Yes. God use me. When you see that God would use you in that way, it changes. You're so excited. I tell you, I can cry.

I pedal carwax. Who am I? And I just moved that person closer to Jesus. The privilege of doing that. I mean, how's that possible? God chooses to work through us. And when we do it, it ignites our life. It's just incredible how that works.

It's true. And it's effortless. It's effortless. And I love the scripture in Isaiah, 43010. Isaiah 4310. It's the one scripture I found that says why. This is a big one. This is a big one. Go ahead. Go ahead. The scriptures from Genesis to Revelation tell us to proclaim the good news and share.

Yeah, yeah, I got that. I got all that. I got all that. But why? Why is it so important, God, to win the loss? Okay, I get that. No, actually, that's secondary. That's secondary. Yeah, this is unbelievable. You want you to share your faith for you. Isaiah 4310 says, thus saith the Lord, I appoint you as my witness so that you will believe. If I was God, I'd say, I appoint you as my witness so they'll believe.

His interest in you is not using you. His primary interest in you is winning you. And if you don't share your faith, you atrophy, the church is at to be. You live in fear. And now it's even hard to read the Bible. You have no joy. And you're going on your way to heaven, but you're not having any fun and more important. You're not affecting the world.

You're not fulfilling his commission for your life. But when you share your faith, when you share your faith, you get off the bench and you're into the game. And now you can't, nobody has to tell you to get in the word. You're digging for answers to questions that you don't know how to answer. And you're praying for Bob that you're with today and Linda's afternoon. This was Billy Graham. Everything comes alive.

Always said this, right? When people would come and make their decision, one of the things he said to do is now you go and you tell others about what you have found. That's the calling. But what's so amazing, and this is true, is that when you do that, it ignites your faith. Now, the title of the book is, ignite your life. It's the same thing. But when you do that, and I've had this experience so many times, it ignites your own faith. And so, but the idea that there's a scripture in Isaiah that says that. It actually says it. It's flat out. I never, we're going to go to a break. Ladies and gentlemen, The title of the book is, Ignite Your Life.

I mean, if you only read my book as atheism dead, you read the archaeology, then you just say, I want to see this and this and this and you want to see these things. And so I can't wait to go back.
