Welcome to the Eric Mettaxas show with your host, Eric Metaxus. Hey, folks, welcome back. I'm talking to China Phillips, and you're not, but you get to listen in. This is fun. Now, China, you are telling us, I love hearing these stories, because most people don't know these stories, how Wilson Phillips came to be. So you're just at this point where this amazing songwriter says, I want to give you some of my songs. You'd already written some songs. So what's next?

So he didn't say, I want to give you some of my songs. basically said, come over to my house and let's write. So we were pulling pointer sister songs out of the trash can and demoing those. And then between doing that, we were in between doing that, we were going over to Glenn's house and we were writing songs with him. So we ended up writing You're in Love. And then one day, he wrote this track and just music. So a track is just music. There's no singing on it. There's no melody. It's just the music, right? I know what it's track is. Yeah, so he hands us the track and he's like, work on this, you know, work on this track. So, oh, I've got my lip gloss on my hands. Sorry. So anyway, we, um, I, we each get the track. I go home and I'm obsessed with this track that he's written and I'm just playing it over and over and over in my car on my way home. And these melodies start coming to me. Now, I don't take any credit for this whatsoever. I totally believe it was Holy Spirit driven. I believe he downloaded the song that night on into my brain. and into my heart.

And so I'm listening to it over and over again, and these melodies start flying out of my mouth. And I pull up in front of my mom's house because I was still living with my mother at the time, and I just put the car in park, grab my memo pad that was in my backseat, my pen, and I just flooding lyrics. Like literally in 20 minutes, I had a song,

and I had the entire melody, and it just was downloaded in a moment. Well, that song ended up becoming, hold on, you know, the number one hit that Wilson Phillips, our first single. And so that was pretty awesome. That was totally awesome. Wait, so you, but on the, on the, on the, on the album, like you, you, so you have a

songwriting credit in there. Yeah, I wrote that song with Glenn Baller. But you really should give the credit to the Holy Spirit. You need to change that. You need to talk to some lawyers. That's just not right. I agree. I agree.

Stop it. I'm teasing you. Stop. Don't answer this. Come on. Don't let me do that. So, but that's, that is kind of amazing. I'm not going to turn down the publishing checks.

That isn't, no. that's amazing. That's amazing. And so how many years were you performing together? I know you're doing stuff together now, but you had a season there where you were like on the road. Oh my gosh. It was five years of nonstop traveling around the world just getting on one plane, you know, onto another. And I was I was really burnt out by the end. It was an amazing, awesome, mind-blowing, you know, priceless experience. But I was very tired by the end, very, very, very tired and I really needed a break. So when I met Billy and I was, you know, approaching my 30s, I was just kind of like, you know, I really think I want to take a break and I really think I want

to start a family. So I took a step back and we disbanded. I did have a solo record in between that, let's just say it was called Naked and Sacred and it was an amazing album. I loved it, but it flopped. And so I really just thought, okay, maybe this is a sign from God. Maybe I shouldn't be doing this anymore. I'm going to take a break and I'm going to take a step back. I don't want to force anything. And so that's when I married Billy and had a baby and then I went on to have another baby exactly one year later. And then I got pregnant with my third child and we moved out of New York City and we moved to Bedford, New York and Stephen and Kenya, Stephen Baldwin and Kenya, had already been saved, right?

Okay, yes, yes. I met Stephen, I met Stephen, when somebody said to me that Stephen Baldwin is a Christian, I said, get out of here. There's no way. I remember him from, you know, unusual suspects. There's no way that guy became a Christian. And I met him at a New Canaan society thing. And he was so just on fire in his faith.

It was amazing to me. And I got to meet Kenya. and I realized that it was through his wife and the housekeeper that was pray. I mean, these are beautiful stories, really. But so at that time, you were not walking with God. Suddenly, your brother and sister-in-law are crazy Christians. Yeah, but I thought it was just a phase. I thought, oh, they'll get over this Jesus thing really quick.

Like, it'll be over. Again, I was so deceived. You know what I mean? I really had the blinders on. Like, the devil really had his grip on me. let me tell you so i thought oh they'll get over it they'll get over this jesus thing it'll pass and they'll get back to themselves again they'll they'll they'll come back to you know earth and back to right their normal selves again drug drug use well that didn't happen that never happened and

so one night it was super bowl sunday i don't remember it was 2004 so my daughter had been born and she was probably about four or five months old. And Stephen and Kenya had come over. And also some of Billy's nieces, some of Stephen and Kenya's nieces had come over. And so we were watching the football game. But then like Stephen and Kenya left and went into my kitchen and the nieces went into the kitchen.

And suddenly I started hearing prayer, but not just regular prayer. This was zealous prayer. And I was thinking of, myself, you know, is somebody, is somebody dying? Like, I didn't know what was happening. So I walk over toward the kitchen and I see that they're laying hands on our nieces. And the nieces are crying hysterically. And I'm thinking, what is going on? You know, what is happening in my kitchen? Something is cooking in my kitchen. And the Holy Spirit said to me, whatever they are doing to your

nieces, you need to walk right into the kitchen, sit down, and ask them to do that to you. And I said, no, no, no, this can't be happening. This can't be happening. And the Holy Spirit said it again, whatever they are doing to your nieces in there, you need to sit down and say to them, whatever you're doing to them, I want you to do to me. China, let me just interrupt to ask you, when you say that, because it's so people hear from God in different ways, did it, did you know it was the whole Holy Spirit and did you hear words or what was that like for you that moment? You know, it's not words. It wasn't like, I know people do hear words.

No, it wasn't it wasn't like China, you must. It was an impression. It was an impression on my heart and I knew I had no choice in the matter that I needed to, I had no choice. It wasn't about needing to do it. I was going to walk into the kitchen and say to them, whatever you're doing to them, you need to do to me. And that's exactly what I did.

I was obedient to the spirit. I walked into the kitchen and I said, Stephen, Kenya, whatever you're doing to them, you need to do to me. So I sat down at the kitchen table. Stephen had these like bug eyes. He couldn't even believe that I had walked into the kitchen and said that. And still to this day it makes him laugh. He just, you know, laugh at the, like the Holy Spirit has such a sense of humor.

I'm the last person he thought would come to Jesus. Okay. So I sat down at the table and they laid hands on me. And basically it was a carbon copy experience of what I'd had in the bathroom when I was 12. Holy scan, down my body gives me chills again. Holy Spirit, down my body, I start to ball and I have like this heaving experience where I'm like, it's the ugly cry, right? It's the ugly cry is starting to happen. And I'm starting to release things that I've been holding onto.

the Holy Spirit is releasing things. And all I can say is I got right up from the table. I went right out to my front door. I grabbed the Buddha, the wooden Buddha that I'd spent $1,000 on, I think. And I grabbed the thing, wrapped it in a towel, duct taped it as hard as I could, threw it in my garage. And I walked into the kitchen and I said, I'm done. I'm sold out.

Jesus is my Lord. Jesus is my Savior. I'm never going back. He owns me. It's over. I am a Christian. I'm a born again Christian. I'm in love with Jesus.

I will do anything for Jesus. I give it all up to him. And from that day forward, I've been serving the Lord as best as I possibly can. I have had, you know, I predict it's just a phase. I don't think it's going to last. What's up in 50 years? I don't see it lasting. Folks, we're going to be right back to continue the story.

it's Miracle Monday. And China, you just said Monday, Monday. One of the huge hits of the mom's... Can't trust that day, Eric. You can't trust that day. I just want to, you know, I want to sing when I, just want to get that idea because those are the kinds of songs that you just, you want to sing. You want to harmonize. Actually, you know, we're talking about this amazing moment in your life. God comes into your life. And I have to say that it's a very beautiful thing and a very rare thing that God would touch you in the same way, 25, whatever years later. It's, it's amazing and beautiful. And so suddenly now there's three,

fanatics in the family. What happens? Does your husband go like, oh, no, she's become one of them? Yeah, he really thought I was going to run off with Jesus, which kind of happened, I have to say, but it's okay. Anyway, yeah, so I definitely went to church that Sunday. I brought Billy with me. I had another very, very powerful experience of the Holy Spirit at church. I was overcome by the Holy Spirit at church. And I, a few weeks later, I was reading the Bible, could not stop. I was consumed with reading the word, reading the word. I just knew it was feeding me and I was understanding it, which also blew my mind. I didn't think I would ever understand the Bible. I just thought it would be gibberish to me, but it was making perfect sense to me, the most sense any book

had ever made to me. And Jesus had become real. Like, I understood that Jesus was, not just this figure of my imagination, but the most real person I had ever known or would ever know, and that he had actually been sent by God into this world to be our Savior, our Messiah. And I didn't even know that the Old Testament was the Jewish Bible. There was so much that I didn't understand and I didn't know that all, just all of this revelation. and came over me. And I was so eager to read the word that I would drive about five miles from my house.

I'd tell everybody I had to run errands. And I would drive to this, you know, really secluded area. And I would just park my car and read my Bible for hours at a time. And then I would go back and, you know, not tell people what I had done that I had been reading the Bible for four hours in my car. It was just so beautiful and crazy and wild.

And, you know, The Lord just took over my heart. He really did. That is amazing. And at what point do you move from Bedford to California? I mean, have you been in California for a long time now? Well, Billy got a show called Dirty, well, Billy got a show called Dirty Sexy Money. And so.

Dirty sexy money? Now, I believe that's on TBN in reruns. So we flew to Los Angeles. And it was funny because when the doors closed on the airplane, I looked at Billy and I gave him this look like, and he was like, what? And I said, you know. And he said, we're never going back to New York. And I said, never.

Never. I just was so done with New York. I love New York. Please, New Yorkers lovers. I live in New York. I was born in New York. I raised my daughter here. You know, we're New Yorkers, but, you know, California is kind of nice.

You're obviously, look, if the daughter of, you know, Michelle and John Phillips is not a California girl, there's no California girl. So, yes, you are. Thank you. Thank you. And I still have a toe that has frostbite from living in New York for 14 years. So I did my time. Okay. I used to walk the dog in my uggs, which was so stupid.

And I got a frostbitt toe. Like one of my toes is still numb. 14 years later. On behalf of New Yorkers everywhere, I apologize. It won't happen again. I promise you. We won't let that happen again. So I get to Los Angeles and I'm going to be honest with you. Kenya warned me. She said, you are going to backslide in L.A. You're going to backslide. You're not going to go to church as much. You're not going to read your Bible as much. You're just going to be hanging around with the wrong people. And I was like, Kenya, please. You know, my sister-in-law, I was like, give me a break. I'm so on fire for Jesus. That's never going to happen. Well, sure enough, I stopped going to church. you know, as much.

I was still going, but not as much. Wasn't picking up my Bible as much. I wasn't praying as much. And I started to backslide a little bit. So I decided, I got on my knees and I said, Lord, you have to show me what to do. And he said, I want you to write music for me. So I'm not really sure.

I had a connection through a stepfather of mine. I have a few of them. And he said, And he said, I have this woman, her name is Vaughn Penn, and I've worked with this woman on a movie. She did some music for my film, and she's a born-again Christian. I really think you'd like her. So I met with Vaughn, long story, I'm trying to make it very short. I met with Vaughn, and we started singing and started writing music together.

And we started writing a Christian album. Now, Billy at the time was on a hit series. He was doing great financially. so he was able to sort of, you know, produce and finance this Christian album that I was now making. And he was very involved. It was very cool. He loved the music we were writing. We would sit for hours at a time.

She was a guitar player, and we wrote 12 songs in probably 12 weeks. And we recorded this Christian album. And we got a record company in Nashville to promote the album. album because we paid for the album. We owned it, but they promoted it. And my sister's book, High on Arrival, McKenzie's book, was released on the very

same day as my album broke. My Fisher record. I don't think we want to talk about the content of McKenzie's book, because this is a family program. Well, wow, that was a bombshell. I will just say, it was a bombshell. And I knew McKinsey's Kenzie, we were friends. I haven't talked to in a while, but wow. And so that kind of took the oxygen

out of the Phillips room. Yeah, nobody really wanted to touch my Christian album. Let's just put it that way. So I ran from Nashville as fast as I could because clearly that was not the town I needed to be in when my sister's book came out. So left Nashville. And I went to Santa Barbara. Okay, so then we moved to Santa Barbara. And when I moved to Santa Barbara, I started to read the Bible a little bit more, and I started to ask God what he wanted me to do. Because then by this time, you know, I had, I was a born again Christian. I had backslid a little bit. I repented for that.

And I was now in Santa Barbara. And I really just didn't know what God wanted me to do with my life. And but Billy was not saved. And I really felt very unequally yoked. And I was very confused about that. I felt very lonely in my marriage. And I felt very resentful toward the Lord because I was like, why can't you just save my husband? Why do I have to be in this walk all by myself?

Like, this sucks. But I, the Lord basically said, China, you need to embrace the suck. It's going to be a while. You're going to have to trust my timing. So I. I decided that he kept saying start a YouTube channel, start a YouTube channel. Wait, the Lord told you this or Billy told you this? No, the Lord told me to start a YouTube channel.

I know you've done that and you have a YouTube channel. We should say right away, how can people find the YouTube channel like before we, you know. Okay, so my YouTube channel is called California Preaching and it's obviously, you know, a spin off on my, you know, a spin on my father's son, my mother and father's song, California dreamin. and I basically I'm not a pastor I don't claim to be a pastor I'm just one of the excuse me I'm just one of the sheep and I am the YouTube channel is basically just me on my everyday walk with the Lord day to day the good days the bad days the days I'm crying hysterically it's like it's like a Christian reality show I mean it's kind of hysterical because I'm basically just letting you know

people into my house, into my life, into my heart. I'm sure Billy loves that. Well, he's on it. We have episodes called Chili, you know, like China and Billy, like Brandgelina. Oh, yeah. You call it chili. Except you guys are staying married, right? Right.

Oh, we're staying married, but trust me, we had a very, I wanted to divorce him. There was a time that I actually wanted to divorce my husband. Listen, I'm not married to him and even I wanted to divorce him. So I understand. I understand what it's like. Life is not easy. No, it's kind of, it's interesting. I think I always say that even the best marriages, marriage can be tough. You know, you bring two people together. It's not so easy, but God has a plan. We're going to go to a break. I didn't realize that Grace Lick Starter was named China also. Now you can do an all-China band. You could do a band where all the girls are named China. You were the original China. Okay, so where were we in your amazing story? You decided to... My way, I have to tell you this. My husband had T-shirts made for all the babies that said made in China.

You know what? That is clever. That is very clever. Gosh. Unbelievable. Well, you, so how many years have you guys been married at this point? Almost 30. Get out.

That's amazing. Wow. I predict it's going to last. That's my theory. It's going to last. The first 30 years are the toughest. I really, I really. Sorry.

No, I just, I think of, I think of Billy as Stephen and Alex's normal brother. Yeah, he calls himself the black sheep. I mean, I mean, the white sheep. No, no, he's, yeah, he's, he's just like. He says he's the white sheep. He's normal. He's normal. Anyway, okay, so you, where were we in your story?

I don't remember you were talking about you'd written this music and then you decided, I'm going to move back or I'm going to make a life in California. And did you give up writing Christian songs? It seems like can't you repurpose them? Can't you re, you know, can't you re-release? this album or some version of it now that McKenzie is not putting out a tell-all book. I just really, when I found out that you were, you know, a serious Christian, it was just, it's just a wonderful thing. And then I, you know, looked at your YouTube channel and I thought

it's just a wonderful thing because a lot of people in Hollywood, you'd assume that Hollywood is, you know, totally secular and everybody in that world, uh, is, you know, is where you used to be. So it's kind of wonderful that you came back to faith, obviously. Praise the Lord. Yeah. I mean, it's just been such, um, a labor of love for me creating this channel. I'm so passionate about it. And the thing is, is that it all started off super glossy. I was like, perfect hair, makeup. My background was perfect. I was reading off a teleprompter. I had everything just perfect, right? But every time I'd go to shoot an episode, I'd get terrible back pain.

And I know that I'm stressed when I get back pain because that's how my body just internalizes stress. It just, you know, it just manifests in back pain. So I got on my knees and I said, Lord, after 10 episodes of my California preaching, I said, Lord, it shouldn't feel like this. Something's not right. What's wrong with this?

You're the one who told me to start a YouTube channel. So what's happening? Come on now. I was like angry. And he said, strip it down, make it raw, be yourself. Don't read off a teleprone. just roll camera. And I was like, oh, no, this is scary.

What are you saying? Completely unedited? So that's what I started doing. I just started rolling camera and talking about what was going on in my life. And let me tell you something, my subscribership picked up so fast because when people see authenticity, when people see the truth, when people see your real personality and when people know it's not smoke and mirrors and, you know, when they really can, you know, when they really can feel your heart and feel your rawness and your and your truth,

then people start to identify and then people start to feel a connection. And that's, I mean, it's kind of doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out. But I really thought that it had to look and feel and be a certain way. So I, you know, I just stripped the whole thing down. And now it's mostly unedited and I interview really interesting people as well. And Billy's on the show, which is really funny. You interview people. Yes.

And you haven't interviewed me. I want you to know I'm really hurt. I'm hurt. I'm going to pray about it. I don't know if I can get over this. And let me tell you something. You had what? I had Kathy Lee Gifford on the show yesterday.

She's a big phony. I know her. She's another phony. She and Stephen. They're all Hollywood Christians. No, no. I love her. Look, if I insult somebody, that's my love language.

But when you talk about saying I wanted to change it and I just wanted to be authentic, I have to say that's my motto. If you can fake authenticity, you've got it made. And that's my goal. Sometimes it's not exactly the way we would like it to be, but God is a God of second chances. And it's amazing to me to see that you've been walking with him in this way. So now you're expressing yourself through this YouTube channel. You're putting your faith Yeah. And you've even dragged your husband reluctantly to be a part of this reality series or whatever this. Yeah.

Well, it's really cool because, you know, Billy's not necessarily a believer, but he'll come to church with me and he'll read the Bible and he'll pray with me. But he's not quite there yet. It's okay. He's so loving and supportive of my walk with God. And he's just so funny. Most Christian husbands are not that way. I just want to tell you.

So just take it as it is. I'm really grateful. Trust me. Most Christian husbands are monsters, controlling monsters. I know because I am one. Seriously, though. No, he is too. He's a controlling.

I'm just kidding. He's very controlling, but he's not a monster. But he goes to church with you. He reads the Bible. That's really wonderful. Good for you. Yeah, it's great. I mean, you know, just the chemistry between the two of us on my show is hysterical

because he's a strong island and everything is just so by the numbers for him. And I'm like this lowy, wafy, California girl. And, you know, we have a very good. chemistry on screen and it's funny. I mean, the joke is always on me. I mean, he's always making fun of me. And I'm fine with that because, you know, I'm pretty self-depreckel in anyway.

Isn't that what the Baldwin brothers do? They just make fun of people. They just look at you like, what an idiot. Like, that's basically what they do. That's, that's seven-tenths of Stephen's schick, just to look at you like, what an idiot. That's a schick. I know.

Billy always looks at me like, what's wrong with you? Yeah. What is wrong with you? So yeah, the YouTube channel has just been such a blessing. And again, it's just me sharing my everyday life with people. And I think it's important for Christians to understand that, you know, nobody does it perfectly and that it's Jesus's righteousness, not our righteousness.

And it's his check. You know, he checked all the boxes. It's not us that's going to check the boxes. That's why we need a Messiah. That's why we need a savior. You know, that's the whole point. And I'm a forgetter. I always forget that it's Jesus.

I just need to love Jesus. I don't need, it's not about, it's not about doing, you know, like religion says do, Jesus says, done. You've heard that. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I thought I had heard every Christian cliche or whatever you want to call it. I have not heard that one. Say that again, because I really like that one. Religion says do, Jesus says done.

But I like to do your hand motion. She says, done. Done. Wow. That's cool. Yeah, so I just try encouraging people to just love. the Lord, like, try not to, you know, because I get hard on myself. I come down on myself and I think sometimes, like, the devil will whisper in my ear and

say, like, you're not a real Christian and Jesus doesn't really love you and you're, you know, you're full of it. I have a shirt on my website that says, I'm full of it. And on the back, it says faith. But, you know, like the devil tries to make me believe that I'm full of it, you know, that I'm counterfeit. Yeah. And he really does a good job on certain days of making me believe it.

And, you know, Satan's a. punk. So I just kick his butt every day on my channel and, you know, how. I mean, Satan, we have to be clear. Satan often says things that are true, but the spirit of it is a lie, right? And if Satan says, you're a sinner, you go, yeah, that's right. And that's why I turn to Jesus in every moment, because I know that. So, you know, it's, and I say on my channel, I say on my channel that we're all just walking each other home. And that's what it's about. It's about having a friend, a Christian, friend that I can confess to somebody that I can say, oh, you know, I did this or I did that or I feel bad about this. And the Bible says confess to one another. So what I do is I confess on my channel

every day what's going on. And I talk about what's going on in a way that is really resonating with people. So hallelujah, thank you Jesus that I have a platform that I can make it all about you, Lord, you know, and I just want to end in prayer if that's okay with you. I just want to say, Father God, thank you for Eric. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to be on the show today, Father. God that today we can all just be convicted. Whoever's listening, who's ever watching that doesn't quite know you yet, Father God, or doesn't know you at all. I pray that you will just have the Holy Spirit fall upon them today, Lord, and that they will know that you were truly sent by God. How many times is it saying in the word that you were sent? for accepting that invitation to be sent into this world, Lord, and for dying on the cross for us, Lord Jesus, and for rising from the dead. Lord, you are the way the truth. in the life. Well, I'm writing music. It's kind of a smokescreen because it's secular because I'm doing it through my publishing company. So, but the songs I'm writing are all God-filled. Um, so that might sound like a

cop-out, but actually not to make a living. No, no, no, no, no, not to me. I'm a songwriter. Yeah. So I'm a songwriter and I'm writing songs that, that, that, that I know the Lord would be pleased with. And I'm also whenever I can writing Christian music. Um, and I am currently writing a book with my husband and it's really exciting. We are, yeah, we're in the, in the and you know what you, we have almost no time left, but you have to write your story of what, what you've told me. You know you do. I mean, what happened to you when you were 12, growing up with that family, all that craziness and Wilson Phillips and Jesus coming back into your life that way. I mean, it's beautiful.

I mean, it's nice to tell it to an audience, but you should write that as a book. You really should. Oh, I am. I'm in the process. I mean, we're both, we're telling our individual stories and our story together, and it's a really beautiful beginning to the book. It's going to be great. All right. I'm going to hold you to that.
