It's hard when for us water, somebody challenged me and said, can you count the ways that you could get drinkable water just within a couple steps? I mean, I'm in South Florida. So with hurricanes, I know I could literally drink from my toilet tank if necessary. So the tub, the ice maker of my refrigerator, the faucets, the garden spicket outside, all of them provide me access to water. But when you travel to Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, you recognize that that is not the reality for so many of these families. Water is muddy and bacteria infested, and it's also often a mile walk away. I mean, these young girls, usually women, are traveling hours every day just to carry water that they know is going to make them sick, but they have no alternative until you, your gift is going to change that.

His name is Dr. Chauncey Crandall.

And I reconnected with him recently in the Palm Beach area. really just a fascinating, fascinating person and very excited to reintroduce him to you, my audience. Dr. Chauncey Crandall, welcome back. Thank you, Eric. It's a great blessing to be with you today. I had such a wonderful time at our breakfast recently, and I thought I've got to get you and your story on my program. I want my audience to know not just that you exist,

but your story of linking the medical world to the world of dramatic Christian faith, healing. Where do we begin? How about if we – give us the – I don't know, the briefest overview, and then we can just dive in from the beginning. Well, Eric, you know, I gave my life to Christ when I was 19, and that was well before medical school. I was in a Presbyterian church denomination, and I didn't know about the supernatural back then. That church didn't teach those things.

But when I went away the medical school, and when I was at Yale University, your university also, I started seeing cases of people that were healed by the power of prayer. I didn't understand it. I didn't know anything about it biblically. And it was by observation that I understood that certain people that believed in God could pray for those that were sick and those people would recover from their illness. That started at Yale University in that hospital. I guess, you know, if somebody asked me to sum up, I would say that, you know, you're somebody with what should be described as impeccable. medical credentials, right? You got your postdoctoral training at Yale University School of Medicine.

You completed three years of research in the cardiovascular surgery division and on and on and on and on. You're at the top of the world in that profession. And then you have this experience with faith, as you just described it, where you see people being healed. The reason, that's exciting for me to talk to you is because it's not typical that people who see dramatic faith healing in the name of Jesus are also, you know, surgeons who are trained at Yale medical school. So you, you've seen the best and probably the worst in both worlds. And there are very few people with your credentials who are in the field praying for the sick. Well, you know, It wasn't something that I wanted to jump into.

It was observation, Eric, and it was exciting. I felt the presence of God, the presence of the Holy Spirit. And these patients taught me about that, that there was something more than I had been taught in church. There was a deeper relationship with Christ that we could have. and all of that really surrounded the power of the name of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, Eric. I was coming about slowly understanding that the Holy Spirit was with us. He was with us in the operating room. He was with us as we walked the wards of the hospital,

but it took years and years to understand the fullness of the true gospel, Eric. Well, I have to ask you kind of an obvious question, but does your outspoken faith rankle the medical establishment? Because, you know, I always think of people like you or to some extent me, we're the worst nightmare of the people whom we grew up with, you know, whether at Yale as an undergrad or Yale Medical School, they just think, what happened to you? Like I can't bear the idea that this person that I knew that has the same credentials that I do that that knows what I know, but that now they're outspoken about Jesus or something. It just, that world is very uncomfortable with the kind of faith that you have and that I have. But nobody can take these credentials away from you. What has been your experience, you know, being as outspoken as you are when you bump into people from that world? Well, the issue is that they think you're a radical because you believe in the Word of God and you have seen miracles.

You know, you've seen blind eyes open, the cripples walk, people raised from the dead even, and they consider you an outlier and they're uncomfortable being around you because you have seen with your own eyes and witness the miraculous things that the gospel talks about, which many people have not pursued. I think the thing is, Eric, is that I've remained hungry all these years. I know that there is more, and I pursue that. So in my practice, at one point I was totally out of control, praying for everyone that came through that practice, and we would stay there late at night, and it got out into the community of other physicians, and many of them would not send their patience to me because they heard that I pray for the sick. You have to laugh. I mean, I laugh just because over the decades, you know, I have, I'm sure as you have, you bump into people, you know, from Yale or from that world.

And it's sort of unbearable for them. And I think it's unbearable because they can kind of smell that it's real. and it just really violates the narrative that they've sold their souls for. It puts them in an exceedingly awkward position on some level. So they have to, I think, for their mental health, they have to kind of pretend you don't exist or you've gone nuts or they have to just look away. Well, I think they are uncomfortable, but the issue is they have not remained hungry for the things of God, Eric. if they have remained hungry, they would pursue the Lord, and he would reveal his greatness and the opportunities and the fullness of the gospel that is there.

So, you know, they're no longer hunger. But I don't know why, why would you assume they ever had hunger? In other words, I think that they're people. And look, I was one of them. I didn't have hunger. I was just stumbling along through life. And God in his mercy found me. It's, in any case, I don't mean to get off on that rabbit trail.

Your most famous book is called Raising the Dead, I think. Is that the one that we would. And that's the one where you tell the story about praying for someone who had died and seeing them raised from the dead. That will change you, I would think. That was kind of the moment. When did that happen? Can you tell that story? Because that's a sort of a seminal moment.

That was in early 2000, 2003, I think. And that was a day, Eric, that I felt I didn't feel totally in God's fullness. You know what I'm saying? Prayed up, fasted up, all these things. And the biggest miracles I have ever seen are on those days when I didn't feel the total presence of God. You know, often we think we have to pray up, fast up, read the word of God, attend church, and all this. And then the Lord will use us.

He will use us any day of the week. We just need to jump out and proclaim his name. And that happened that day that man presented to the hospital with a massive heart attack. He died. They worked on him for over 40 minutes. They called me to the case. And I had a very busy day. And in fact, I declared the man dead.

He was being prepared to go to the morgue that day. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. You declared the man dead. I don't remember this part of the story. So you come in as the medical professional and you go, yep, he's dead and you officially, professionally declare him dead. Yes, I declared it with the emergency room physician that there was nothing else we could do to keep this man alive. We declared him dead.

We ended the resuscitation and he was being prepared for the morgue, Eric. All right, he was being prepared for the morgue, and then what happened? Well, I finished my note in the room, and I left the room in the emergency room. I walked down the hall, and I heard the voice of the Lord call on me to turn around and pray for that dead man. And I thought to myself, I can't pray for him. I don't even know what to pray. Is that really you, Lord? And I kept walking down the hallway.

and as I did, I heard the voice of God come back a second time, turn around and pray for that dead man. So I turned around, I walked down that hallway, back into the emergency room, into the room where that man was being prepared for the morgue. The nurse was sponging down his body. All the IVs and tubes had been pulled out of him, and I stood over his body, and I prayed.

this prayer. Father God, I cry out for this man's soul. If he does not know you as Lord and Savior, raise him from the dead now in the name of Jesus. Hang on. And that man came back. Hang on, because this is

Chonsie, you're just relating this very dramatic story, and you get to this moment. You said that all of the IVs, everything had been taken out.

You had already declared him dead a while ago, but God commands you to go in and pray. Like anybody, you just say, is this you, Lord? This doesn't make sense. Obviously, it doesn't make any sense. But you hear it again, and you go in. And you just said, You prayed. Was there anyone in the room when you did this? Was the nurse who had been sort of dealing with the corpse? Was she there?

She was behind the body and I was on the other side and she looked at me like, what are you doing in this room? And I laid my hands on his abdomen and started praying in the name of Jesus for his life to be restored. And he came back to life that day, Eric. Now, what exactly happened? In other words, you know, what you just said, okay, makes sense, but let's go a little bit deeper. You're dealing with a corpse that you have officially declared this to be a corpse, a former living person, someone who is dead. Time has passed. This is not like, you know, you thought he was dead.

You knew he was dead. The nurse knew he was dead. He's preparing him for the morgue, literally. and you then come in and you pray. So she looks at you like you're crazy. You go through this prayer. While you're praying this prayer, you clearly didn't know what the result of this prayer,

where you're being hopeful, you're being faithful, you're being obedient to God who has told you to do this, but you look like a crazy man to the nurse. How long, how many seconds was it from your prayer to actually seeing anything? And what did you see initially that said there's life? Well, Eric, you know, this woman, I mean, was on the other side.

She was not a believer. She almost looked like she was full of the devil. She didn't want me in that room. And she gave me this stern look. I finished that prayer. And as I finished that prayer, I backed off the body backwards out of the room. And my right hand went up in the air as if to praise God. no control over it. And as I'm backing out of the room, the emergency room doctor walks in. And for whatever

reason, I said, shot this man again. And he said, impossible. He's gone, Dr. Crandall. There's no life in him. And I commanded him to take those paddles and put it on his body and shock him. And when he did that, immediately a perfect heartbeat came back. And a minute later, the abdomen started moving. We didn't do anything. We were in shock. We were just standing there watching the monitor, watching the body. And all of a sudden, the abdomen started moving.

The hands started wiggling. And all of a sudden, a gush of wind came out of his mouth. And the nurse screamed. What are we going to do with him? now, Dr. Crandall. Those were his, her words. And I said, I don't know. And we stood there, dumbfounded, like, what is happening?

God must be moving in this room. I had never seen anything like that. The doctor was shocked. The nurse was shocked. And we had to deal with that man. And we took him to the critical care unit just shortly after that. It's astonishing. I mean, it's a story you've told many times.

I believe you told it on the 700 Club. That might have been the first time I saw it around that time. When did your book come out raising the dead? That came out probably the middle of around 210, something like that here. And I will tell you that that book has gone around the world. It's been in many different languages. It's an encouraging book of a dead raising, but also my life. And it gives people encouragement that there's so much more

to our walk with Jesus. There's the fullness of healing and deliverance and even the ability to raise those people back to life. Well, I'm always astonished at people who are serious about their Christian faith who don't really believe in this stuff and they want to be able to dismiss it. And so if somebody prays for healing or deliverance or anything like that, they just dismiss it. it's very tough to dismiss it when, you know, somebody who has lectured on these medical issues as you have that has practiced in this world that has been at Duke and at Yale and on and on when you say this stuff. Did the doctor that was there who joined you and that nurse, did they ever comment on this? Did they just slough this off as, oh, well, I guess he wasn't dead after all? No.

It was the buzz of the hospital, Eric. The Holy Spirit started moving. People started being touched, okay, in that hospital system. It was a buzz. There was electricity that a miracle had taken place. And it went throughout the wards of the hospital and continued to stay in activity with many of the nurses for years and years and years. Well, what's interesting to me is that, obviously, if you had not come back into the room and prayed, and, you know, in other words, it was only in obedience to hearing from God, which is itself radical,

because many Christians don't hear from God or don't know about that, but you hear from God forces you to go against everything that makes sense, to go back and obediently pray for him, and then to tell the other doctor to put the paddles on him. So, you know, if it weren't for your faith, this can't be written off, or I guess the aspect of your praying and being part of it in that way. That's really what makes the story. This is not just something like we can kind of, I guess, process it in a natural way. We're talking to Dr. Chauncey Crandall. The book we're talking about is Raising the Dead.

Tell us about that. I mean, what is it like to see, especially as a doctor, especially as a doctor, to see limbs restored? I mean, what are some of these miraculous things that you saw with your own eyes? Well, you know, all we have to do is read the Bible and see the miracles there and those were happening on the crusade fields. But to see crowds of hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people with all sorts of deformities crying out to God. and the power of the Holy Spirit. no matter how you feel, what type of day you've had, that the Holy Spirit never leaves you, Eric. He is always with you as a believer in Christ. And you can call on Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is there. And as we would walk through those crowds, I can remember one event where I just was with another man,

and he just started crying. He said, there are too many. We can't reach all of them. We can't lay hands on every single one, hundreds of thousands of people. We stayed in that field for hours and hours and hours for those poor people that were coming that needed assistance and help.

We saw blind eyes opening and the deaf ears opening and the cripples walking. I can remember one day the event I prayed for this cripple man and he had these homemade crutches that were carved, and the crusade was over, and I was walking in the field by myself the next day, helping them take down the crusade stage. The grass was tall in the field,

and I said, Lord, I don't even need to see the people to see your glory, show yourself to me. And as I finished that prayer, Eric, I tripped over these crutches, and they were the crutches of the man that I had prayed for the night before. They had the same carvings in there. I said, oh, Lord, he left this field healed. And as I continued to walk through the tall elephant grass, Eric, there were more crutches.

There were more canes, hundreds of crutches and canes of people that came to the event. And they were healed in the name of Jesus. they left their crutches and gains and left that field totally restored in Jesus' name. Well, I know you saw so much of this. You're like my friend Ken Fish. This is normative. He's seen so much of it, and there are many people that have. I've seen very little of such things, and most people haven't seen with their own eyes, these kinds of things.

Did you ever see any kind of anything right in front of your eye, like a limb growing back? I mean, you hear about stuff like this. Have you seen anything? Well, I haven't seen a limb grow back, but I've witnessed a body distorted by arthritis, start popping and cracking before my very eyes in the body straightening out. I mean, it's a sound that I'll never forget those bones popping and cracking right in front of me. You were telling me at our meeting the other day about, your story, how your ancestors came to the United States in the 1640s, and that you have,

you can trace yourself back 11 generations, and you said the first seven generations, they were all men of God in your family line. Well, they were all ministers. They came to the new world for religious freedom. They were Baptists, and they had to leave England because they believed in water baptism. And they came to Rhode Island in 6th. and they were radical men of God. They were men with strong voices and they proclaimed Christ and they preached the word to the Indians. They went to the frontier of society back then. And the fire of God was so heavy on them. The anointing was so heavy that they would go through towns and people would run from their cabins to receive Christ. It was incredible. And this is something recently that I

found out about. But those generations, Eric, have been praying forward for the families that are coming, my family and my children and grandchildren, and I'm sure for you as well, that men of God from ages past have been prayed for this generation. So we need to grab the baton and fight, Eric, in Jesus' name for the salvation of souls. Well, there's no doubt about it. And it's just interesting because then you were sharing how your father and grandfather and great-grandfather, they were men of business. They were not carrying on this tradition. So you have seven generations of faithful men of God.

And then suddenly you kind of come out of nowhere and God touches you. You said you came to faith early on, but that you didn't know about the power of the Holy Spirit. So it was kind of, I assume, a kind of a drier Christianity. Well, I came to God when I was 19 in Africa. as an anthropologist, and for 25 years, it was a dry life. I used to run to Bible studies at Yale and all the universities. And I said, where is the power? Where is the authority? Where is the boldness in these studies? And I would return to my wife, and I said, I don't want to be like these men. I said, there must be something more, but I didn't know the depth. In 25 years after salvation,

I heard a man of God speak, Eric. And he talked about it. the fullness of the gospel in a way that I had never heard. And he prayed for me, Eric, and I flew across the room, and I was touched by the Holy Spirit, and I have never changed since that moment. Boldness for the Word of God came on me, the authority of the word, the excitement of the power of God. And I said, it's been on me ever since, and I just want to give it away today. Well, you told me this story about how you flew across the room. You say that pretty cavalierly. You flew across the room. I mean, it's rare that people see anything like this.

You hear about it, but you felt this power that drove you across the room, and you were never the same. You know, that's not happening in your average Baptist church these days. I think you understand that. Well, it's not, but people need the demonstration of power. They need the same miracle signs and wonders. What kind of a service was it that you were in when that happened? We've got to go to a break. Just tell us that.
