Welcome to the Eric Metaxas show. I shouldn't tell you this, but Eric hired someone who sounds just like him to host today's show. But since I'm the announcer, they told me, so I'm telling you, don't be fooled. The real Eric's in jail. Folks, welcome back. We're talking to our friend, Kevin McCullough. You are somebody that appreciates CSI, Christian Solidarity International, and what they've been doing to free slaves. I always forget the slaves are currently held in Sudan.

Northern Sudan. Sudan, Sudan as a country kind of stopped existing a few years ago, largely due to the efforts of John Ibner from Christian Solidarity International, who really drew attention to the Civil War and got the Bush administration and the Tony Blair administration and a few others to get involved and to say, hey, we need to end the Civil War. sadly, when the world got involved, they brought the two sides together, settled, made peace. That's how South Sudan came into existence. But nobody did anything about the slaves. And so while they're all patting each other on the back saying, hey, look at what a great job we did.

Meanwhile, there were 185,000 South Sudanese that had been taken captive by Arab jihadists in the north. and none of them were released via the agreement to bring an end to the Civil War. So what CSI has been doing diligently these many years is sending essentially underground railroad stop runners to the north to find where the slaves are, to negotiate their freedom, to negotiate their release, and to bring them home to where they need to be. And this is an amazing work. these people, largely women, have gone through excruciating life events while they've been in captivity. And if we, if we, you know, went through the list, some of them would be so difficult. I would have, I would have a hard time being able to describe them on our airwaves. But the truth is, they've been brutally, brutally, systematically abused in every form of life.

emotionally, physically, sexually. They've been starved. They've been told that they've been verbally accosted with a language and a descriptor of an animal that's so profane that we don't even have an English equivalent when you try to translate it. But they have been, they have received this treatment every day in captivity. And some of them taken when they were five, six years old as little girls. And some of them are now in their 20s and 30s having been kept in captivity. 15, 20, 25 years in some instances. And it's what CSI is doing.

No one else is doing. So it's your listeners on your show, Eric. It's my listeners on my show. And a handful of other people across the country that have come together and said, we're going to do something about this. Thankfully, praise God, over the years, that number of 185,000 has been reduced to what we think is now around 35,000 to 40,000. But that means that there are still a lot of women in captivity.

some of them have had children. Praise God, the last couple of years, CSI has actually been able to negotiate the children's release in some instances as well. The Slave Masters have never been open to that in the past. They are now opening up to that concept. And so we're seeing even some moms and children being reunited. But it is an amazing work that nobody else is doing. And unless we talk about it, nobody will even know. That's why what we're doing is so important.

Well, that is why, ladies and gentlemen, I exhort you to join us in this. It's exciting that we get to do this, that we get to free slaves. And it's difficult to think that there are people enslaved, but it's more difficult to think that you could do something about it and wouldn't do something about it. Now, this is God's work. Let's be clear. We get to participate in God's work. God is against slavery. And he has used Christians in particular through the centuries to stand against slavery. They free them, which is the most difficult thing, but then they go the extra mile and they set them up in a life of freedom, which Kevin can talk about, but I want to give the phone number. I haven't given the update. As of today, May 8th, Thursday, we have raised on this program $4,000, which is 16 slaves will be freed as a result of those of you

who have given. So those of you who have given, God bless you, thank you for doing that. But we have a long way to go. The goal is to free 100. slaves. Obviously, we'd like to free a thousand slaves, but our goal is 100. We have so far as of today, 16. So whatever you can do, every $250, frees a slave, sets them up in a life of freedom. Some of you can do many multiples of that. Suzanne and I will give generously, but we need everybody to step up because this is something that you can't leave it to somebody else. Everybody has an opportunity to step up. At whatever level you want to, what it, whatever it is, even if it's a small level, please give something.

you to talk a little bit about how CSI sets these folks up in a life of freedom because that is really, it's amazing that CSI has been doing this for a long time. It's the secret sauce to giving these people a life that they've never had. you were mentioning how families should do this together. Our family took a significant step forward during COVID because I was going to DSI on the air and my kids overheard me doing the show from the house and they came in and they said, Dad, what are we doing about that? I said, well, we've freed a slave this year. And they said, no, we've got to do more than that. And so imperfectly, and I'm not saying we're 100% on this,

but as best as we can, we ask God to try to help us be able to free one slave every month in the McCullough household. And if somebody would join us, and if somebody would join us, in that effort here on the Metaxus show. You're going to bless 12 human beings with brand new lives. But let me tell you how that happens. You talked about the $250. A very small portion of that is what is needed to secure the vaccine that is actually the bartering tool to get the slave released.

They barter the life of their cattle for the life of a human being. And the vaccine is something that CSI can provide. It helps keep the cattle healthy. The rest of that $250 is. 99% used for their relocation and starting a brand new life. And what we're talking about is a wide array of services and needs. First of all, when they're released, they get back to the border of South Sudan. And there's a recovery camp that they go to where they are allowed to just talk and tell their story. They're allowed to talk with counselors. They're allowed to get medical attention. Many of

these people have been maimed and butchered in ways that have left permanent health marks on them. And so there's medical needs, there's psychological needs. Those things are all offered to them at the camp. They're allowed to spend as many days there as they need to kind of get nutritionally built up. Some of them have not eaten consistently. Everything they need to, you know, kind of live that life. They've got tarps and other things that help keep them protected from the weather, blankets for the cold. It's a brand new life.

It's amazing what your listeners have done. I think there are people, you know, tuning in who can hardly believe this is real. I always have to say that that you mean to tell me that there are actual slaves, not sort of, like actual slaves. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, but the only good news is we can do something about it. We can free the slaves literally, I use the word literally carefully here. I don't like when people use it sloppily. We can literally free slaves, set them up in a life of freedom when we partner with CSI. That's what we're asking you to do today, or at least to listen to what's involved. So Todd, lay it out for us, if you would. Sure. Well, CSI,

first of all, for those not familiar, Christian Solidarity International since 1977. We have been working on, you know, rescuing people from religious and civil liberty, infringements and violations all the way up to, including imprisonment and enslavement, like you were saying, Eric. And a big area, we do it in regions all over the world, but a big area of our focus has always been in Sudan, where late last century, I made that sound like a long time ago. And it was a time ago, like 30 years ago, the Sudanese Civil War, basically it was just religious persecution. And Muslim marauders were allowed to go into largely Christian villages in what is now South Sudan and rape and pillage and just destroy.

And they have taken captives. And they've been held for ever since then, you know, 30 some years now. CSI's been engaged in freeing them now since the 90s and over 100,000 people have been rescued, brought back into what is now. South Sudan, reunited oftentimes with their families, and spared, frankly, and saved from all sorts of horrendous abuse. I mean, we're talking, you know, we're talking mutilation, beatings, verbal abuse, everything you can imagine. And so that's really the heartbeat of what CSI does.

And when you think about the fact that you can liberate a human being, most of them women, but now a lot of children who are actually born into slavery as well, you can set them free with your gift of $250 and with that same amount of money. set them on the course to having a new life in freedom. You provide them what we call it a sack of hope, but it's actually much more than that. It's grains, its resources,

it's bedding, shelter, it's a she-goat to get them started on a brand-new life in freedom. So it's really a remarkable opportunity for you to make a huge life-changing, life-saving difference in the lives of people. And as I was saying earlier, Eric, over the years partnering with you,

the metaxis listeners have freed well over, I've lost count actually. It's got to be into the 7, 8, 9, 10,000 people. So we're very grateful for the partnership and we'd love to have more people join us. I mean, the whole thing is staggering to me. As I say many times, it's hard for us who live in America in 2025 to conceive of the evil that's still in the world. Like, you know, maybe we abolish slavery in America in the 1860s. But evil continues around the world. And it's up to good people to do what they can to fight it. And so the fact that this is real that in the 1990s, people were enslaved, folks. This is not like a race issue. This is black people in Africa enslaving other black people because of their faith. So you have radical Muslims enslaving people in a part of the world today.

This is a reality today. So this happened 30 years ago. We know, you know, the UN gets involved and whatever. So they put an end to taking new slaves, but they did not require them. Think of this. They did not require these slave owners to give up their slaves. And that is why we who can have to do something about it. Because if we don't do something about it, they remain enslaved. This has gone on now for decades. They have had children. The children are slaves. This is real. And again, it beggars the imagination. But I think if you're listening, you know this show, I don't make stuff up.

I try never to exaggerate. This is real. But the good news is that the folks at CSI for a long time have been involved in doing God's will throughout the world. And this is as specific and clear an opportunity as we get to put our faith into action. And that's a big topic for me, faith in action. What does your faith lead you? to do. Do you understand that God obliges us to put our faith into action? If you say you have faith,

but you don't put it into action, well, maybe it's because you actually don't have faith. So this is a beautiful opportunity. And Todd, I'm always amazed at how, you know, you guys have figured out it's not enough simply to free these people. That's, of course, the most important thing. But then to set them up in a life of freedom. We cannot imagine the trauma that they've been through. what happens to them. So the fact that every $250 that people give helps people get set up in a life of freedom. So talk more about that because that's just beautiful, but you actually follow up with these folks. Yeah.

So, you know, keep in mind that most of the people that we rescue, they were actually enslaved to when they were young, you know, oftentimes two, three, four years of age. Taking captive, again, when these marauders came through, have killed, usually killed the parent, killed the men, killed the brothers usually, moms and daughters taken captive. And so they've really literally never known anything other than captivity. And then oftentimes their mom is killed. They're given or sold to different masters. They're repeatedly raped by multiple men. Oftentimes they end up having children. And so you can imagine, and then the isolation and being told multiple times, you are less

than human, you have no value. If you try to escape, we're going to kill you. That's been their life. and now suddenly they're set free, they're returned to their homeland, and they find a new community among other women who have shared that same experience. And so, first of all, that community, but it's all anchored in the church. All of this is anchored in the love of God and the love of Jesus. That's our motivation. And when they come back, we do our best to reunite them with their family in their original community if we're able to.

Sometimes they were taken so young, they don't even remember where they're from. and so we can't always do that. But in the event we can't, we set them up in communities built around a local church, a pastor shepherding them, and we start them on a whole new life. So it really is a beautiful picture of restoration as only in redemption and freedom that only God can provide through his people. So I think it's the most beautiful expression of showing the love of Christ in a transformative way that any human being could be a part of it.

When you're thinking about it, $250. I mean, that's nothing. You know, you break that up over the year. It's a 20 bucks a month. You're freeing a human being. And oftentimes now they're bringing the kids with them and setting them on a new life in freedom in Jesus. It's beautiful.

We love for you to be a part of it. Well, and the figure that CSI gives is every $250 will free one of these human beings and set them up in a life of freedom. So that's key. So that's every $250. Now, I know my audience varies, and so there are people, I know listening, who could easily say, okay, this is tax deductible. I can write a check for $5,000.

This is amazing that I get to do this. $5,000. Oh, my goodness. That's 20 human beings. So there are people that can do that, folks. And it's tax deductible. This is God's work. This is putting your faith into action.

But I have Todd Chapman on, who's with CSI. And Todd, you know the actual stories. So put some meat on the bones. Help us understand because it seems sometimes so theoretical and impossible to fathom that this is real. Yeah. Yeah. We conduct several what we call slave liberations every year.

We try to do three or four a year. And we have just got a little bit about the process, and then I'll share a couple stories that I literally just got earlier this week. But we have slave retrievers that are always moving around to North Sudan, identifying slaves, and then negotiating their freedom with their masters. And so four times a year, we gather them all in a large group and literally march them. We walk them in mass down into South Sudan. where there's a big celebration.

Huge party goes on when these captives are set free. We set them up with a bag of hope and the she goats and everything they need to start a new life. It's a beautiful picture of God's redemptive grace. But it's interesting, Eric, because we've talked about this before. Again, most of these women that have been held captive were taken captive when they were very young, two, three, four years of age. And they've been held ever since. And so now they're adults.

And I'm looking at two stories that I just got. These are two beautiful women. just liberated. One's name is Alec. One's name is Alec. But the thing that's interesting about these two stories, and I saw this amongst this latest liberation, more stories of women who were actually born in slavery in North Sudan. And now we've set them free. And interestingly enough, you probably can't see this if I hold it up, but I've got photos of them. Both Alec and Alec, they are holding children of their own. And this really, this will bring tears to my eyes because It's so important, friend, that you understand that this is multi-generational bondage, slavery, that we are stopping, that you are stopping when you give a gift.

It was already significant and beautiful that $250 freed one of these captive women, but now that they've had children there, and we've been now, over the last year or so been able to negotiate oftentimes freedom for some of their kids as well. And so that's a beautiful thing. So when you give that $250 gift, you know, you may well be liberating one. of these women and their children. But Alec and Alec's story very similar. They were actually born into slavery. Parents had been captured from South Sudan, worked without pay. They were beaten. They were abused. They were basically sold to different masters. Every one of them, both of these ladies were raped multiple times. The children that they have are from their slave masters. And both of these ladies actually have more than one child. They were only able to bring one

child into freedom with them. Think about the heartbreak of that, right? You want all your kids to be free, but you take what you can get. And so it's just beautiful. And I read these stories, Eric, and it just motivates me even more to advocate on behalf of our brothers and sisters and these kids that have had no voice. They've been forgotten. But thanks to your show and your listeners, we've been able to bring this in front of so many people. And literally, thousands and thousands of slaves have been set free because you said, wow, that shouldn't be happening not today, not any time, and you've given. So thank you for that. Thank you for setting these women free. And now their children as well. It's just incredible. I keep thinking that, you know, most of these slaves are Christians.

And we can't doubt that they're praying for God to intervene. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And so, folks, you can be the answer to their prayers. Think about praying for years and having no answer. Many of us pray for years for something and we get no answer, no answer, no answer. We know God hears our prayers. In this case, I can't even imagine being enslaved. And the God you worship is a good God and he loves you, but he allows this. And somehow he allows us to be the answer, to be what ends the slavery. Yes. When I think of what it would be like to be a Christian who believes in the good God of Scripture,

but to be enslaved, to be suffering like this, and to be praying and praying to see your children treated this way, this is an opportunity for the church to step up. I always say this, folks, it's about putting your faith into action. It is really vital that we put a faith into action. And I honestly believe that it increases your faith. When you act on your faith, it increases your faith. When you tell your kids, mom and dad are choosing to take the money that God has given us or that we've earned and use it for strangers who are enslaved, who shouldn't be enslaved anymore than we should be enslaved. But they are enslaved.

And we have the opportunity because God has blessed us that we get to do something about this. And we are blessed to be a blessing. So we live in a free country. We get to talk about this. We get to do something about this. And again, that to me is what's staggering is that it's not just, oh, this is a terrible thing. We can actually do something about this. Yes. Yeah, absolutely. And just to quantify the impact that you have had, if you've ever participated in one of our campaigns here on the Eric Metaxas show, over 100,000 slaves have been freed since CSI has been doing this. And every year, more and more freed, I think, like, Last year, your listeners freed about a thousand slaves between our May campaign that we're kicking off right now and the one that we do at the end of the year. So thank you if you've been a part of that. If you never have, could I just boldly say, you're missing out on a blessing? You really are.

Because think about it, this is the gospel. This is the gospel message. We were all born into slavery and sin, right? And God redeemed us through the gift of his son, Jesus Christ. And we now, you know, because of our gratitude for what God has done for us, we can set another person free, a person who is actually in physical bondage, they're enslaved, they're being verbally abused, psychologically abused, physically abused. They're being forced to convert to Islam, even though they're Christian, their slave master says you will convert to Islam, and then they get physically mutilated as part of that process. It's absolutely horrendous what happens to them, but you know what? They don't give up. They don't ultimately give up. They don't ultimately give

up their faith that God can and hopefully one day will deliver them. And we get to be a part of that. It's just such a beautiful opportunity for you. And I'm looking at a story right here. This young lady just came into freedom in a freedom liberation or liberation about three weeks ago. Nijang is her name. She was just a young girl in a peaceful South Sudanese village when she was out fetching water with her mom one day. And the Raiders came through and they took her captive. she and her mom, they walked her into the north. She watched men slaughtered in front of her, women and girls raped along the way. And in captivity, she was in prison.

She was mutilated like I was just talking about. She was abused, raped by her master. She thought it would never end. And then one day she met a man who works for CSI. He identified her as a slave, and he said, do you want to be free? I can help you get free. And he negotiated her freedom. She now is in South Sudan.

She's been given that bag of hope. We're working on reuniting her with her family. And that's the kind of story, Eric, that is told a couple thousand times a year, thanks to your generosity. So our goal during this May campaign, we do this every year, we would love to see at least 100 slaves liberated. And I would just like to, you know, obviously every gift makes a difference. But I just want to put a challenge out there. If you have the capacity and you could give $1,000, you would free four of the U.S. slaves and set them on the path to a new life. Man, if we had 25 people amongst all the people

that are listening and watching right now, do that. And I know that God has provided for you to be able to do that. That would be 100 slaves freed right now. If you can't give $1,000, give $250 a month, give $50 a month, whatever you can do. Eric, we have people to listen to your program that for years now have been giving a monthly gift. They're so committed to this. They're like, maybe I can't do $2.50 every month, but I can give $25 a month. They're $50 a month, and they've done it for years. seven, eight years because it's so important to them that they let God use them to free slaves. And I believe that that's your posture as well. And we would love for you to join us in free. I just say over and over, it's about putting your faith into action. This is an opportunity.

And it's also crystal clear. It's not vague. It's not sort of. This is very clear. CSI uses every penny in doing what we're talking about. So it's an unmitigated good. And I throw this out there, you know, as much. as I say, everyone should participate. If you can give $10 a month, whatever it is. I know there are folks out there who can give a lot. And I would want to say to them, I do this all the time. If there is someone out there who can give $15,000, I offer myself, you know, to spend an evening to have dinner. We've done this around the country. You know, you can get a group of people together and you can all pitch in. But if somebody, if somebody's

They do all kinds of things to free these slaves and then to bring them, to walk them to a new territory into a life of freedom. and then they set them up in a life of freedom.
