Okay. Spill. What? You're different. Something.
is I sort of made a decision.
Yeah.
I'm going to be baptized.
Really?
I already told Father, I'm ready to join the church.
This is amazing.
Yes.
Yes, yes, yes.
I told you.
You're glowing.
Look at you.
How do you feel?
You know,
For all my life, I haven't really had a home.
Yeah.
A place that was mine.
I was always going to be moved, and I feel like I'm home.
Yes, girl.
We are home, and this means you're going to be stuck with me, forever in heaven.
Well, I didn't really think about that.
We've been praying for so long.
Lord, thank you.
I can't wait to tell him.
No!
Do not tell that fucking bitch!
Okay, okay, okay, I don't.
Swear, Megan, you will not tell that fuck bitch.
I won't.
Corsa, what's wrong with you?
Ro-R-R-W-R-W-W-W-W.
You want me to stop?
Roo-R-R-R-R-B.
You're gonna hurt your son.
You're going to hurt yourself.
Please, please.
What is wrong with you, Drissa?
Please, you're hurting.
Welcome back, everyone, to The Exorcist Files.
And no, that's not the name of a tax and accounting firm for priests.
Instead, it's thorough firsthand accounts from the case files of Exorcist and Catholic priest,
Father Carlos Martins, dramatized for your listening experience.
And as always, listener discretion is advised.
The Exorcist Files podcast features content not suitable.
for all years. Today we bring you our newest case file, a mother's love. Now, for many people,
the decision to follow Christ and become a Christian is a profound one, a decision that is often
accompanied by joy, peace, and a new hope for the future. But for one girl, the jubilation of joining
God's family was short-lived, as she discovered that a long and entrenched to darkness
was all too determined to make her move towards heaven, utter hell. So, get those Bible
rosaries and relics ready, and keep that gourmet coffee in your cup steady.
It's time for the Padre with the heavenly cadre.
Here's Father Martins.
Many Christians think that the moment one surrenders to the Lord, the struggle is finished
and the soul is won.
In one sense that's true, by Christ's death and resurrection, God's victory has already been
secured.
The war is won, and the devil is eternally defeated.
But for the individual soul, that battle is often just beginning.
Christ's victory is not your victory unless you're on his team when you take your last breath.
When someone decides to reject the kingdom of darkness and join the kingdom of God,
the enemy doesn't simply shrug and walk away.
He doesn't just say, oh well, I guess I lost this one and just watch his property leave.
On the contrary, he immediately puts plans into action to take back what was once his.
He will plot, scheme, and do everything he can to convince that person that his decision to follow God was the wrong one.
In this exorcism account, we will examine the demonic repo strategy, illustrated in the case of a college student named Clarissa,
someone whom the enemy had marked for himself since her infancy.
Clarissa's story began with tragedy.
Her mother, a drug addict, died of an overdose when Clarissa was just a toddler.
With no father listed on her birth certificate, she was placed in the foster care system,
a system meant to offer safety and stability,
but one that is far from foolproof and at times fails to protect the most vulnerable.
Clarice's first foster placement was rough to say the least.
It only deepened the sense of abandonment and loneliness
already carved into her heart by her mother's death.
No Barbies at the table.
You know that.
Why?
Because it's against the rules.
But a Tonya had a Barbie at the table yesterday?
No, she didn't.
Yeah, huh?
You just didn't see her.
Oh.
So you're a little.
tattletale now? No, but she did. No one likes a tattletail. And let me tell you something. In life,
you can't go blaming people for your mistake. Are you kidding me? I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
You're sorry? Really? It wasn't on purpose. As soon as I turn my back, you're throwing temper tantrum.
It was an accident. You know,
lying makes you ugly
you're an ugly
liar
and you have no appreciation
for how expensive things are
do you know how much
money's on the floor
do you
no
you have no concept
get it up
get it
sorry
where are you going
getting a towel to clean
no
No towel.
Get on your hands and knees and eat it off of the floor.
Now!
But that...
You heard me.
That's...
That's gross.
The floor is dirty.
Well, you're not going to waste what I spend good money on.
Eat it, you little animal, rat girl.
The first placement was simply awful.
There's no other.
way to put it, and the experience left a traumatic impact on her. But I do want to be clear about
something. There are many wonderful foster parents out there, folks who open their homes with genuine
love and selflessness, and for a year and a half, Clarissa was blessed to be placed with one of them.
Mercy was a single woman in her 40s whose own child had died before reaching the age of 10. She devoted
herself to providing a foster home for kids who needed one.
Mercy's kindness and love toward Clarissa would prove to be profoundly formative.
Her warmth gave Clarissa something she had never truly known before, a sense of value.
And to those out there who have no children of their own, let this be an encouragement.
You don't have to share blood with someone to leave an indelible mark on that person's life.
love has the power to heal, shape, and offer life where there was once only emptiness and pain.
Oh, Heavenly Father, thank you so much for being our protector and our provider, oh God.
You are constantly always with us, oh God, and I praise you for it.
Our Father, our sight is limited, but I know I can't see what's next without you,
but with you I can see what's next, Lord.
Thank you. Thank you for being my shepherd, O God.
My good shepherd that I know I can trust in you, Father.
Clarissa?
You're okay.
You're okay.
It's okay.
Did you have a bad dream?
It was so scary.
It's okay.
Hey, hey.
Tell me what happened.
I was walking my school and the sewer opened and something ugly tried to pull me down inside.
Oh no, my goodness.
It wouldn't let me go.
That's very, very scary.
Hey, hey, I'm so sorry, baby.
But it's just a dream.
Yeah.
Right?
Yeah.
It's not real.
You're safe here.
Nothing can hurt you here.
I don't want to have scary dreams.
I know, baby.
But, hey, can I give you a little good news?
Yeah.
Jesus is here with you, even when you're really, really scared.
And he loves you so, so much.
And Jesus is one.
way bigger and stronger than any dark monsters or scary things. Oh yeah. Jesus is the Lord of this
house and nothing can come against you here. Yeah. Hey, I'm going to show you something I wear, okay?
Do you know what this is? It's a necklace? What's all the spiky things around the heart?
Oh, well that, that is a crown of thorns. Oh. Yeah. This is the sacred heart of Jesus.
And it's a reminder of how big and full of love the heart of Jesus is.
Here, come here, let me put this on you.
I'm giving it to you.
Thanks.
You see, Jesus is always with you, baby girl.
Always.
What do I do if I get scared?
You just ask your friend Jesus to protect you.
He's always there listening.
And in fact, you know what?
Come on, give me your hand.
we're going to say a prayer together right now.
Jesus, I give you my heart.
Keep away all the bad stuff and nightmares.
In Jesus, may we pray.
Amen.
Amen.
Feel better?
Come on, get some sleep.
I love you.
Love you too.
Mercy was patient, tender, and deeply caring.
With her, Clarissa felt something she had never felt before.
Safe.
For the first time, home was a place of peace instead of fear and anxiety.
But after 18 months, that fragile sense of stability was shattered as Clarissa was moved to yet another foster home.
Their parting was heartbreaking.
Mercy wept as she packed Clarissa's few belongings, and Clarissa, clinging to her, felt as though the little bit of love she had finally found was being torn away.
baby, I'm so sorry you have to go.
But we will be together again one day.
I promise you that, okay?
And you have your sacred heart?
Yeah?
And you remember Jesus loves you and he will always be with you, okay?
And this is not goodbye, right?
Just until I see each other again.
That's right.
That's my girl.
Lord,
Be with Clarissa.
We know that nothing can separate us from your love.
Come here.
Each night in the United States, more than 390,000 children go to sleep in foster care.
The foster system exists to provide temporary homes for minors who have been removed from family due to abuse, neglect, or unsafe living conditions.
Overseen by state and local agencies, foster care aims to offer protection and stability while working, when possible, towards reoccurable.
towards reunification with the child's biological family.
Foster family step in is a bridge,
offering love and structure
and often chaotic circumstances.
But foster care is far from simple.
Many children move multiple times,
not because they've done anything wrong,
but because their foster placement
can no longer meet their emotional or behavioral needs,
often due to trauma.
Foster parents may experience burnout.
Placement licenses may expire,
or siblings may need to be reunited.
Sometimes,
children move because a relative is found or because they're being adopted. Other times, it's because
no one can keep them. And for those who don't find permanency, foster care ends not with a family,
but with a birthday. Roughly 20,000 young people age out of the system each year, typically at age 18 or 21,
often without lasting support. Despite its flaws, though, foster care remains a place where fierce love,
resilience, and healing can still break through. Amen.
Father Martins here, I want to do a quick plug for one of the most powerful tools I've seen for breaking free and growing closer to Christ.
Exodus 90.
The Exodus 90 challenge begins this year on January 20th, but this isn't just a 90-day program.
Exodus 90 is a spirituality for modern men that is built on three ancient pillars, prayer, self-sacrifice, and fraternity.
We all long for something more.
We long to be the men God created us to be, sons of a loving father.
It's time to turn away from our idols.
It's time to break free from the pharaohs that hold us in bondage.
If you're ready to make a fresh start and embark on a journey to uncommon freedom in Jesus Christ,
then download the Exodus 90 app today.
This is your chance to break free, refocus, and rediscover who God is calling you.
you to be in the new year. It starts January 20th. So go to Exodus 90.com slash X-Files to learn more
about Exodus 90. That's Exodus 90.com slash X-Files to join tens of thousands of men from all over the
world for Exodus 90. Again, it begins Monday, January 20th.
God bless you.
In all, Clarissa would pass through six foster homes.
While not every placement was harsh or embittering, each left its own mark.
With each new placement, she grew more guarded and more reserved.
By her late teens, she had stopped expecting stability in her life to come from anyone else.
Instead, she staled herself to be self-reliant, determined never again to live at the whim of others' choices.
With the assistance of a state scholarship program, she was able to enroll in a good college.
It was there that she began to form stable relationships and learn how to live self-sufficiently.
For many, college can be one of the most challenging chapters of life.
It marks a threshold, an in-between season where one is no longer a child, but not yet fully an adult.
For this reason, it is a time of heightened vulnerability, because the choice.
choices made and the experiences endured become the architects of the future, setting in motion the course of a person's life that will follow long after those few years have passed.
Clarissa lived on campus where she was paired with a roommate named Megan, a committed Christian who exuded kindness, integrity, and generosity.
Megan was very involved in the Catholic Church on campus and was that rare breed of person who always puts others first.
The goodness and charity of her character slowly broke through Clarissa's guarded walls, such that in time, Clarissa trusted her and could be vulnerable with her.
Okay, so what time are you getting there tonight?
Remember, I went to that scape park with you.
So you're coming to Praise Night, like you said.
I know, but...
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, you're coming.
We are short on people, and we need you.
I promise it won't be weird.
No one is gonna recruit you.
Like, is it just a big group of people singing really cringy songs?
People will be worshipping, yes.
But you don't have to.
Actually, I've heard you sing, and I think God would prefer you serve him in other ways.
Ah!
Ouch! Okay.
Tusha.
I don't know. It just seems weird.
Weird. No. Weird is that Lady Gaga concert you made us go to.
I've never seen that much sequence and leather in my life.
This is people. Just thanking God for all the blessings.
Okay, okay. But Meg, you know I'm like not religious at all.
Your sacred heart metal around your neck seems to say otherwise.
That was a gift from someone very special to me. That's different.
Do you not see the pattern here?
It seems like a lot of the people who love you best are Christians.
Okay.
Can I just do your homework for you instead?
Oh, look, you don't have to come if you really don't want to.
But so you know, Chad, Mr. Guitar and Imples, he will be in attendance, and he's quite.
yummy.
Did you just say yummy?
Have a better word for him?
He is yummy.
Indeed, indeed.
And if you don't come, I will be forced to flirt with him and make him fall in love with Mawa.
You wouldn't.
Try me.
Fine.
Clarissa began to attend worship nights and enjoyed getting involved with the community.
For someone who had struggled to form meaningful.
relationships after such a tumultuous childhood, this community was a tonic to her soul.
And it was these friendships and beautiful Christian souls that ultimately brought Clarissa to faith.
As an aside, I want to point out that the way you live your life, the way you love people,
cherish your friends, and even the way you treat strangers, can be our most powerful ministry.
and for most of us it is.
For Clarissa, it wasn't arguments, debates, or books that convinced her of the truth of the Christian faith.
It was the tangible love of Christ made visible in a community filled with the spirit's joy that drew her in.
A joy that had been missing from her life for far too long.
Nevertheless, even as faith began to awaken peace within her,
It also stirred something dark and unheeled.
It was as if the light she welcomed exposed a hidden turmoil that had long remained in shadow.
Okay.
How about the word for that freshman girl?
You see how wrecked she got?
I was sobbing.
God is so good.
I know.
That was amazing.
What time is it, though?
That was like four hours.
Right?
I'm exhausted.
No wonder God waits until they're.
and to do the best stuff, has to make sure we stay till the end.
I'm starving.
Anyone want food?
Sushi?
Salmon belly, yes.
Ladies, could we maybe audible?
What?
Come on, you love sushi.
Yeah, not to give you TMI, but my stomach is still acting up.
Oh.
Yeah, salmon belly is no bueno for me.
Still fighting that?
It's been like a month.
Have you been to a doctor?
Yeah.
He says there's nothing wrong with me.
Let me guess.
Male doctor.
Yes.
Assumed to his period cramp.
Well, we just came from a worship night.
Why don't we pray for it?
Megan has the magic touch.
Yeah, why not?
But seriously, if you get healed, though, we are going to sushi.
Deal.
Thanks, guys.
Alrighty, then let's do this, ladies.
Okay.
In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Almighty God, we declare your lordship over Clarissa and ask that you...
Oh, oh, uh, actually, no.
Nah, I changed my mind.
I don't need prayer.
I think I'm just gonna go home and sleep it off.
Sure, you just call us.
Let's just ask Jesus.
I know what I said, and now I don't want prayer.
Hey, I'm sorry.
You are sorry.
Get your fucking hands off me, you little bitch.
Clarissa.
Oh, whoa.
Oh!
Oh, my stomach.
What's happening to me?
Do you want a small ambulance?
No, no one is touching me.
Do not fucking touch me.
No one can touch me.
It hurts. It hurts. It's squeezing.
Deep rest, cool.
It's squeezing.
Scripture says you can't serve God and money.
And if money is running your life, well, that's a problem.
So as we get ready to start a new year,
year, get rocket money and take control of your budget and your finances and let money be what
it's supposed to be, a tool. Rocket money is a personal finance app that helps find and cancel your
unwanted subscriptions, monitors your spending, and helps lower your bills so you can grow your savings.
Now, as I've mentioned before, Rocket Money has alerted me to increases and prices of some services
that prompted me to ask the question, do I in fact need this? Is it really valuable? Well, Rocket
money shows you all your expenses in one place, including those subscriptions you forgot about.
And then here's the best part. It alerts you when those subscriptions increase in price.
So you don't wake up one day and find out you just spent hundreds of dollars of extra hard-earned
cash on something you actually don't need. Now, there's another amazing feature.
Rocket Money will even try to negotiate lower bills for you. The app automatically scans your
bills to find opportunities to save and then goes to work to get you better deals.
They'll even talk to customer service so you don't have to. Rocket Money has saved users
over $2.5 billion, including over $880 million in cancel subscriptions.
There are 10 million members save on average up to $740 a year when they use all of the app's
premium features. So if you're ready to cancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your
financial goals faster, well, it's time to get rocket money. Go to rocketmoney.com
slash X files. That's rocketmoney.com slash eX files. Thank you to Rocket Money for supporting
show. That night marked a dramatic turn for Clarissa. Her friends convinced that she was having
some sort of cardiac episode called an ambulance. She was discharged the following day with no
signs of any heart issues. The doctors concluded it must have been some sort of panic attack.
Beyond her physical maladies, Clarissa began experiencing psychological ones as well.
She would erupt into vitriolic outbursts and spew curse words during times of her.
of prayer, leaving everyone looking on in complete shock.
Internally, she also experienced a sense of overwhelming dread as the one unseen light was
pressing upon her chest and suffocating her.
But her symptoms of illness also worsened.
In addition to stomach issues, she began experiencing fevers, chills, and pains all over
her body.
Then came the blackouts.
She would awaken in places with no way.
recollection of having traveled there.
These episodes were often followed by what now had become routine, fits of uncontrollable
rage.
After finally seeking medical care, she was baffled when none of the many tests could
identify any possible cause.
As far as doctors were concerned, there was nothing medically wrong with her.
To any outsider, Clarissa's problems may have resembled a late-onset case of Tourette
syndrome, a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by sudden and repetitive motor movements
and verbalization.
In a small percentage of those who suffer from Tourette's, that verbalization manifests as the
involuntary utterance of obscene words or socially inappropriate remarks.
But there were other signs for which Tourette's syndrome could not account.
For example, Clarissa routinely awoke with bruised.
and deep claw-like scratches across her body as though she had struggled with some unseen predator
during the night. Even the most profane outbursts of Tourette's cannot carve wounds into the flesh.
Okay, I want to jump in here, head to my secular habitastery and adorn my skeptics at. Let's be
clear, almost all of Clarissa's symptoms align with the symptoms of known medical conditions.
There are way too many to list, but just to name a few, there are several neurological and
psychiatric illnesses that can cause memory loss, violent outbursts, and even physical manifestations
on the skin, with the victims scratching or hurting themselves without any recollection of doing so.
One potential explanation is the presence of a disassociative disorder. Disassociative identity
disorder or disassociative amnesia, which can cause memory blockouts and dramatic personality shifts
and often results in behavior changes of which the individual is not aware.
Another possibility could be temporal lobe epilepsy.
There are cases where seizures can trigger dramatic emotional surges, which can cause vocalization
of profanity and other strange behaviors.
Lastly, there are psychiatric illnesses which include severe mood disorders and schizoaffective
conditions, which could account for many of the symptoms.
I was also surprised to learn that some severe skin allergies can cause manifestations that
might, at first glance, appear to be claw marks, while many potential causes for
Clarissa's condition exist, it is certainly interesting that these all began just after she decided
to become a Christian. In the end, just because there is a possible medical explanation does not
necessarily mean, though, that the issue is entirely medical. It was at this point that mine and
Clarissa's paths crossed, with no conclusive diagnosis from the medical community. She took the advice
of friends and sought help from her campus chaplain, who, in turn, arranged for her.
to see me. The way that Clarissa described it, it was as if the mere mention of Jesus's name
triggered extreme abdominal pain. Whenever others prayed nearby, her mind erupted with vile and
blasphemous thoughts, words so dark that she could scarcely believe they were her own.
Worst of all, she found herself powerless to keep from expressing them. It was as if she was
trapped inside herself and forced to watch as her own mind and body betrayed her in the most
humiliating fashion. Clarissa described everything coming to a head one Sunday morning during Mass
at the recitation of the Nicene Creed. As the congregation began to speak the words,
Clarissa suddenly felt her throat constrict. No matter how desperately she tried, not a single
syllable would pass her lips. Her mouth quivered, her face strained, but all that escaped was a low,
guttural sound that made those nearby turn an alarm. That afternoon, shaken and ashamed,
she tried to pray the rosary. But as the beads slipped through her fingers, her hands seized so
tightly that her knuckles turned white. Then in horror, she found herself violently pulling the rosary
apart while uttering curses, utterly powerless to stop.
Understandably, those who witnessed her bizarre behavior
assumed she was suffering from some form of mental illness.
Friends began to distance themselves, uncertain, and afraid.
The isolation only deepened her anguish.
Each day, the fear grew that whatever this was, it might never end,
and she would become totally isolated.
More than once she returned home in tears,
begging God to take this plague from her.
She began to notice a pattern.
The nearer she drew to Christ,
the stronger and more violent,
the inner resistance became.
It was as though something deep within her
recoiled at the very mention of God's name.
Christ set us free, right?
The great physician?
Yes, yes, he is.
And why am I going through this hell?
At this point, I'm sorry I ever even came to Christ.
Clarissa, I am really sorry that you're going through all of this.
Make it go away.
It just keeps getting worse.
Yeah, I see.
I see.
Can I ask you, what does getting worse mean?
I know it's awful right now, but to help, could you just elaborate a little more?
Every time I try and do anything religious.
Anything, Christian. I mean, anything. I get sick. My insides feel like they're being torn out. I can't pray.
And I just say the most awful things. Like, I can't stop. I just say the meanest, darkest things. But it's not me saying them.
Yeah. Yeah. You said you converted only a few months ago. Do you have any experience?
of religion growing up? Did your parents ever take you to church?
No. I didn't know my mom well. She died when I was five from an overdose.
I'm sorry. Yeah, I never knew my father at all. I basically grew up in six different foster
homes. Most were awful. But I had one and I consider her my second mom, mercy.
She was amazing and really good to me.
She was a devout Christian.
She gave me this sacred heart necklace that I still wear.
Ah.
Yeah, I see it.
It's beautiful.
Thanks.
So what happened to Mercy?
I don't know.
I remember they located one of my mother's aunts who agreed to adopt me.
And I was shipped across the country.
She was a widow and actually had lung cancer.
So she died only a year after I lived with her.
And then I was back in the system.
Okay.
I never saw mercy again.
Hmm.
I am so grieved to hear about that.
I'm so sorry.
At my next home, the parents, they took my necklace.
I said it was Catholic.
I cried for days because it meant so much to me.
And you know, I had nightmares all the time as a kid, but after Mercy gave me that necklace,
they went away.
Wow.
Yeah, after they took the necklace, the nightmares came back.
Horrible dreams.
But a couple of days later, I was looking through the garbage cans and I found it.
I hid it in my room and would wear it at night.
The nightmares went away after that.
Clarissa, may I, do you mind if I speak candidly?
Yes, please do.
I just want this to end.
Okay, what has been happening to you is actually consistent with a spiritual attack.
Okay, okay, before you became a Christian, Satan had no reason.
to interfere with your life, but the moment you decided to join God's team, Satan came after you because he risked losing you. He doesn't like to lose.
Okay. What? What do we do?
We asked Jesus to fix it. So, would it be all right with you if we prayed together and asked the Lord to intervene to show whatever could be causing this so we can get rid of it?
Yeah. Yeah, we can do that. Do you mind if I use the restroom first?
Oh, of course, you can. It's down the hall, second door on the right.
Thanks.
When Clarissa got up to go to the restroom, I began to pray, asking God to bless her and to guide me in how best to help.
This is what I always do before praying with anyone. I pray about praying with them.
doing so gives me space to listen, to see whether the Lord has something particular he wants to reveal.
It also ensures that what follows is a partnership between him and me, rather than my own
attempt to take the lead. There's a world of difference between asking, Lord, what do you want done,
and saying, Lord, here's what I want you to do. God already knows what needs to be.
done and how best to do it. My task is simply to discern his will and follow it faithfully.
So I began to pray. Lord, I thank you for your daughter, Clarissa. Please fill her with your love
and bring her freedom. I ask you shed light on her situation. I ask you guide me. I ask you take
away from her everything that is not you. Lord, please guide. What? Clarissa?
Everything okay?
Clarissa.
Clarissa, are you all right?
So what's the matter?
You, piece of shit!
Fuck you!
And thought of beliefs!
Clarissa, wait!
Clarissa stormed out of the bathroom in a state of pure rage.
With the bathroom door wide open, it suddenly hit me.
The foulest stench.
It was thick, invasive, and I was.
utterly indescribable.
I stepped toward the doorway and looked inside.
Everything on the countertop, hand lotion, mints,
a small vase with decorative flowers,
had been swept to the floor.
Urine and feces covered the toilet seat
and pooled on the tile floor.
The roll of toilet paper had been ripped from its holder
and thrown into the bowl.
The battle was on.
And so Clarissa fled the scene,
leaving father to pray fervently, not just for her, but for the unfortunate janitor who would
arrive on the scene in mere moments to begin his quest to make all things new.
