Spiritual authority mirrors earthly authority. Parents possess spiritual authority over their children.

Their prayers have elevated power. An employer or owner of a business possesses spiritual authority over the company, its employees, and its assets. A homeowner has spiritual authority over his home. You get the picture. But there are areas where spiritual and earthly realms diverge. For example, as a homeowner, you can dwell inside a house that is legally yours. But because of your sinful actions, you may have lost spiritual authority over it.

just because you continue to dwell in it does not make you its legal owner. And if you're living in a place that legally belongs to demons, well, you're going to have trouble because they're not in your house. You're in theirs. Welcome back to the Exorcist Files, the curious and captivating chronicles of the case files of Catholic priest and exorcist, Father Carlos Martins. Every superhero has an origin story, and while our resident demolished, of demonic strongholds, Father Carlos Martens, would never call himself a superhero. He is in, quote, possession of his own fantastic origin story. And while he wasn't bitten by a

radioactive spider, he was bitten by a loving and omniscient God, who in his wisdom said, Carlos Martens, I choose you. Today we bring you the story of an almost accidental exorcist. Fathers told this story in many of his public talks, and we thought it was about time. to bring you the full story in 3D glorious surround sound. Listener discretion, as always, is advised. I've heard a saying among veteran exorcists, you don't choose to be an exorcist. Exorcism finds you.

My experience attests to this. My first encounter with a demon occurred just after I was ordained a deacon and was serving in my pastoral year. I had no formal training in exorcism. but the priests at the parish where I served handled all the deliverance and exorcism cases of the archdiocese. The parish was large and extremely busy. Each priest was inundated with work

in addition to handling his share of the spiritual warfare ministry. As I have said before, there is a shortage of priests to say nothing of exorcists and the caseload for some can be intense. One day, the past, had just come out of a session and was utterly exhausted. You could see it on his face. And just at that moment, a call came into the parish requesting a house blessing. But this wasn't just any run-of-the-mill house blessing request. The caller was reporting that poltergeist-like activity

was occurring in her home, and she desperately desired the church's help. Oh, yes, of course. Uh-huh. Oh, I'll let Father know. Thank you so much, Greg. Uh-huh. You too. Bye now. Geez, Louise. Hello, this is Margaret. Of course, dear. I'd be happy to help you with that. Are you local to the area? Yes. May I get your name? It's Serena.

Nice to meet you, Serena. Let me just pull up Father's Calendar, okay? How would sometime the week of the 28th work, the end of next week? Oh, honey, what's wrong? Oh, hey, it's okay. Um, can you tell me more? Oh, of course, Serena. Um, let me get your contact information. The woman was going through something very tough.

Margaret's intuition made her move on it immediately. I happened to be in a meeting with Father that afternoon when she walked in and relayed her request. Yes, come in. Hi, Father. Oh, hi, Deacon Martins. I'm sorry to interrupt, but do you have a second? Of course, we always have a second. I just got off the phone with a woman, and she says she needs a priest to bless her home immediately.

Immediately. Is she okay? She sounds really shaken up. I told her we could do it by the end of next week, but she was insistent that it had to be right away. So did she sound crazy? No, she sounded scared. Trust me. A woman knows. Okay, let's get her help. Look, there's no way I can do it this week. Francis is tied up. Deacon. Go get rid of the devil. And just like that, I got drafted.

Listeners will remember from season one, the father has guardrails in place against moving urgently when it comes to potential deliverance ministry. Not only are there a shortage of exorcists and priests with an exhaustive caseload, but many people who come forward are not in real supernatural jeopardy,

but rather are suffering from mental health issues. Father also has stated that one of Satan's tactics is to try and distract, attempting to lure priests and exorcist into decoy cases, if you will. An exorcist has to guard his calendar fiercely to ensure people with legitimate spiritual requests for help can be assisted in the soonest possible time frame. Father Michael desired to help Serena as soon as possible, but he was so exhausted that he handed me her contact information and said, Deacon, go get rid of the devil.

I called Serena that evening and made an appointment to meet with her the next day. I wanted to get a sense of what kind of person she was before stepping into her home. I trusted Margaret's intuition, but you can never be too careful in this work. We received many calls, and you must balance expediency with caution, as you never know what you're walking into. At this time, I was not yet Father Martins, but Deacon Martens. Nevertheless, in the case of house infestations, deacons are fully capable of dealing with such matters. The term deacon originates from the Greek word diaconos, which means servant or minister.

The role was established in the early Christian church and is specifically mentioned in the New Testament. Deacons were appointed to help with practical and charitable responsibilities of the church, and over time evolved to include more liturgical responsibilities. In most cases, a deacon serves as an intermediary. between the clergy and the congregation. While not priests, deacons can perform certain sacraments, such as baptizing, officiating at marriages, and conducting funeral and burial rights outside of Mass.

Deacons, however, cannot consecrate the Eucharist, absolve sins, or anoint the sick. More relevant to our discussions, however, in house infestations, deacons can definitely help get rid of the devil. So, if there is something strange in your neighborhood, who are you going to call? Deacon or priests? are both just fine.

We agreed to meet my office. It was a warm, sunny, beautiful afternoon, which was ironic considering how dark and serious the matter was we were about to discuss. When she walked up, I could see the fatigue on her face. It looked obvious that she wasn't sleeping well. Hi there. Hello, Father.

Actually, I am not a priest yet. about eight months and then you can call me that. It's actually Deacon Martins now. Nice to meet you. Oh, uh, I thought they were going to connect me with a priest. Well, actually, they did connect you to a priest and he gave it to me. But I assure you, deacons are absolutely able to help. We bless homes all the time. Now, come on, just tell me what's going on. Margaret said you're having some issues in your home. Lord, I feel like one of those. daytime talk show women. Father.

Sorry, Deacon. Do you think houses can be alive? Alive? I know this sounds crazy. No, no, please. Please continue. Either I'm completely losing it

or my house is attacking me. I'm not crazy, I swear. Like the other night, I couldn't find my puffer jacket and I looked for two hours. tore up my whole house, figured I just lost it. I came home later that night, opened a cupboard to get a glass of water, and lo and behold, it was rolled up like a ball next to my cups. Hmm. Do you think it could be a friend or maybe a roommate playing a trick on you?

I live alone. Hmm. I see. Objects disappearing and then reappearing in a different location are common in house infestations. while demonic phenomena vary. This is one of the hallmark manifestations. And finding your jacket where she found hers, in the most bizarre place, you start wondering whether you've lost more than just the item.

You'll wonder if you're losing your mind. The enemy loves to gaslight. Oh, and the doors, they just slam shut and open, and I'll just be in the kitchen cooking something, and I'll just hear a door slam. Like upstairs, it will just... slam shut, like wind blew it or something, and then I'll just hear another one open somewhere else. Wow, Serena, I...

This really sounds awful. I am so, so sorry. How long have you been living like this? That's just it. I'm not living. I'm trying to stay out as long as I can before I can go home and I know I'm going to fall asleep. Well, I assure you if it's spiritual, I can, I can. can help you. Let me ask you this. How long have you lived in this house? About four months. What stood out about Serena's situation

was the taunting nature of the disturbances. I asked myself, why? What rights have been given that enable a demon to do this? I was new to exorcism, and I had no idea what I was doing. But I remember being very aware, even with that level of inexperience, of one principle. When evil is present, it is so for a reason.

I do not explicitly remember whether I was taught that principle or whether I just intuited it, but I was very aware of it. Evil does not set up shop randomly. It does so for a reason. At the same time, I was asking a parallel

and equally important question. Is Serena trustworthy? Her answer to my question as to how long she lived in her uncle's home raised a flag. Why would she endure this torment for so long before reaching out for help? If this was happening in my new home, I'd leave. I had no doubt that she believed that her home was demonized. I could see it plain as day on her face. When she described it, she wasn't lying.

But the issue I had was whether she was, whether she was, was adequately connected to reality or not. What Serena was telling me was so fantastic that it really left only two possibilities. Either she had a mental illness that was so severe she could not distinguish between an imagined haunting and a real one, or there really was a demon in her home. Most claims of demonic harassment are rooted in an overactive imagination or mental illness. However, Serena was an intelligent, articulate woman who didn't seem to fit the profile of either someone who was overly imaginative

or someone who was being deceived by mental illness. It's actually my uncle's place. He has been overseas for a couple years and his house was sitting empty. And when he found out about the fire, my home burned down a few months ago. Long story. He invited me to move across the state and stay. his home for as long as I needed, said, you know, me casa as su casa.

Well, that was really nice of him. Yeah, it was. I needed to save money, had nowhere to go, really. We've always been close, you know, the fun uncle, fun, jovial, always there for me. Hey, he sounds great. But let me get this straight. Your house burned down months ago. Two weeks later, you move into your uncle's house and now think it's haunted?

Yeah, I guess that's the best way to put it. I'm not crazy. I swear, I'm not making this up. I just need a little bit more information. Please be precise. When did you first notice the phenomena? I asked Serena how long she lived in the home to establish whether the issues were left over from previous occupants

or whether they emerged during Serena's time. but I now asked this question for even more clarity. Her reply was that the strange happenings and harassment started a couple of weeks after she moved in, after she was fully unpacked. Like many victims of demonic infestations, the signs were subtle at first and then escalated. It started with a glass falling off the kitchen counter onto the floor.

Serena was reading a book on the couch and the crash startled her. She chalked it up to having left the glass too close to the counter's edge. A couple of days later, however, a plate fell onto the floor, breaking into dozens of pieces. But the odd thing was that she had no plates on the counter or any other place where they could easily fall. All were inside the cupboard, and the cupboard door was closed.

A day or two after that, her start. began being moved. At first, objects were only slightly moved. For example, she might put a book down on the coffee table in front of her while she used the restroom. When she returned, it would be on the couch where she had been sitting. As time progressed, however, objects were hidden in strange places like her jacket had been. But then Serena described one manifestation that unnerved her above the mall. It was the beginning of a whole new level of torment. One night, she was awakened at 3 a.m. by what she thought was an intruder. She got out of bed and reached for the loaded gun she kept in her nightstand. She got up and walked down the hole, unable to identify the source of the noise. She heard

a music box in the other bedroom. She paused outside her uncle's room, thinking the intruder was inside. She braced herself and burst in. No one was in the room. As she approached, the music box suddenly stopped. But just then, the door slammed behind her. She heard a deep growl. That was the last thing she remembered. It sounds like you're being toyed with. I am. This thing knows. God, help me. How do I say this? The box knows. I lay down to go to sleep, it goes off. I wake up, it's chiming away. Then a whole day goes on without it going off, and I think, wow, it's done.

And then almost at that second, I hear the damn thing chime. Sorry. Serena, can I, can I ask the obvious? Why don't I get rid of it? I can't move it. The thing will not budge. It has to be adhered to the wood. It's on this really fancy dresser.

It's like a nice piece of furniture. I've tried to pick it up, pry it off. Nothing. If I weren't staying at my uncle's house for free, I would smash the damn thing with a hammer. I see. I'm curious. What has your uncle said about all this?

Don't you think he would want to know that his niece is suffering in his house? What do you say to someone in this situation? Hey, thanks for the hospitality. But just FYI, your house is haunted. and you have a possessed music box. I can't imagine bringing this up. And also, there is a bit more to this.

He's got locked drawers all over the house and really creepy art. Stuff that you wonder who pays for this. Like, he has this painting of two black goats just glaring at you. Who has that? I love my uncle, but he apparently has a weird side. Here was a woman living alone in a creepy house that didn't belong to her,

in a city that was unknown to her, where she probably had few friends, if any, and she endured months of demonic harassment before asking for help. Serena did not move out because she could not afford her own place. She had worked for a large realtor but lost her job during the economic downturn, and in the fire she lost all her belongings. Still, I found it very strange why she didn't tell her uncle what was happening. Perhaps he could shed light on why it was occurring. In letting her use his home, he obviously cared about her, but she was adamant that he not know.

When investigating demonic disturbances, it's important to determine if the evil is tied to the occupant or the place. If it's tied to the occupant, moving won't help. The evil will follow. If it's attached to the place, it may be because of the current or a past occupant. Sometimes the easiest cases involve previous occupants. When a property changes hands, demons can lose their legal right to be there. They're like squatters and can be commanded to leave in Jesus' name.

I recall a case where a newlywed couple dealt with nighttime disturbances on and off from the day they moved into their new home. Each time they came into the kitchen, the cupboard doors would be open along with the fridge door. Finally, one night, fed up and screaming, the man ordered the entity to leave, asserting that the house was his. And guess what? It left. That's all it took. Serena, I really appreciate your answering all these questions. It really helps. Now, one last thing, before the fire destroyed your home, did you experience any of these kinds of disturbances?

Nope, nothing. I thought she would say that. Assuming Serena was not lying, everything pointed to her uncle as being the cause of the home's manifestations. It was impossible to tell exactly what he had done to bring this about. She spoke of weird and dark art hanging on her. his walls and numerous lock drawers throughout his place. But if he was away for two years and was not planning on having any occupants,

why lock anything away? Regardless, her uncle said something to her that was critically important if there was going to be any cleaning up of the place. He said to her, My casa es su casa. My house is your house. If I was correct that her uncle was the cause of a the infestation. Then his saying that gave Serena the authority to authorize me to clean it

spiritually. This point is worth explaining. I don't know what Serena's uncle did that brought about that level of evil into his home. Neither did she. Regardless, her uncle has a right to have evil in his home if that is what he chooses. If evil entered by his invitation, either directly, through his willful cooperation, or indirectly, as an unknown tag-along with the sin he committed. There is nothing that I could do about it. I did not have the right to kick evil out of his place without his authorization. Thankfully, however, I didn't need it. He gave Serena the authority to authorize me.

The only thing left to do was to bless her place. It turns out that on that particular day that I made, met with Serena. I only had one afternoon appointment, and that appointment canceled just before Serena arrived for hers. Well, you know what? I have a good part of my afternoon free. Why don't we just head over to your place and bless it now? See if we can't fix this for you today. Really? Oh, thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. Okay, I'm just a few blocks up. Do we need to do anything to prepare? An invitation is all I need from you. Let me go collect some things and I'll meet you over there shortly.

I told Serena to go ahead and that I would meet her at her home in about 30 minutes. I informed her that I needed to assemble the things I needed to bless her home. In truth, I did not need anywhere near that length of time to get what I needed. I sent her ahead and gave her that time because my offer to bless her house was unexpected. Giving her a half-hour head start might save her some embarrassment by allowing her to tidy up the place should it need it. It would also give me a little extra time to pray. When I arrived at her place, I really didn't know what to expect.

Serena was waiting outside the front door and was all smiles. She opened the door to let me in. Well, shall we get to work? Thank you so much for doing this. I'm just happy to be of help. As I stepped inside, the atmosphere of the home was different than any other I had encountered. The tension was thick, heavy. If I had to put it into words, I would say that the home and everything within it, even the air, felt like it was against me.

As I stepped further into the living room, I felt like I was being watched. Just then, the ceiling fan started to turn, but only slightly. like at a speed so slow that in a minute it might make one complete rotation. Serena was in my line of vision. There was nothing she did to turn it on. Suddenly it started spinning incredibly fast, jet propeller fast. It went from barely moving to rotating thousands of times per minute. Father, what's happening?

It's just parlor, When I say spinning, I mean much faster than it was designed to spin. It was as if it was the propeller on a plane. The blades weren't even a blur. They were basically invisible. There was no natural way that the fan could turn that quickly. The wind that it's been created was so strong that objects toppled over and scattered around the room. The wind power that the fan produced was astonishing.

And then, just as quickly as the fan had started, it stopped. Instantly. It didn't slow down. It stopped on a dime. But then, after a few seconds, it started spinning again. But this time, in the other direction. It did so slowly at first, just as before. Then, just as before, it entered into an instant blazing speed.

Because the fan was now blowing the air upward, its wind produced a different effect. The objects hanging on the walls, paintings, portraits, and curtains, rattled and shook, with the lighter ones blowing from their place and flying across the room. There it goes again! Apparently, I am not a welcome guest here. Obviously, Serena was not lying. The unnatural activity of the fan corroborated her story that the house had evil within it.

Many times I've thought back and wondered why such a manifestation occurred immediately upon my entry into the house. If the intent of the demon was to scare me, it had the exact opposite effect. This woman was being taunted by a bully. My goal was to introduce Jesus and give him a taste of terror. The first order of business was to make holy water, which I would sprinkle, in each room after I had prayed the blessing. Okay, please get me a large bowl from the cupboard and fill it with water and bring some salt as well. Okay, a bowl? What are we doing?

We are going to make holy water and this demon is going to hate it. God's creature, salt. I cast out the demon from you by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God. Go get it. I began the ritual. And sure enough, Serena's intruder was not happy. The ritual begins with Latin prayers and takes approximately six or seven minutes to pray. Exorcissutae, Creatura Salis. Perdeum, per diem vivum, per diem verum, per diem saint.

By the God, by God who ordered you to be thrown into the water spring of Elysius to heal it of its barreness. May you be a purified salt, a means of health for those who believe. a medicine for a body and soul for all who make use of you. May all evil fancies of the foul fiend, his malice and cunning, be driven afar from the place where you are sprinkled. And let every unclean spirit be repulsed by him who is coming to judge both the living and the dead and the world by fire. Many describe the Catholic right of making holy water as holy and fearsome.

It begins with God's creation. nature, salt, I cast out the demon from you by the living God, by the true God, by the Holy God. The right presumes what the church believes. The devil is the prince of this world and enjoys jurisdiction over it. Therefore, the church uses the victory of Christ to take jurisdiction over it, fashioning it as a weapon that it uses against the forces of evil. After this, the church prays into the blessing what it desires the outcome to be. May you be a purified salt, a means of health for those who believe, a medicine for body and soul for all who make use of you. May all evil fancies of the foul fiend, his malice and cunning be driven afar from the place

where you are sprinkled, and let every unclean spirit be repulsed by him who is coming to judge both the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen. The priest or deacon then turns to the water and similarly brings it under God's dominion, saying, God's creature, water, I cast out the demon from you. you, in the name of God the Father Almighty, in the name of Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord, and in the power of the Holy Spirit, may you be purified water, empowered to drive afar all power of the enemy, in fact, to root out and banish the enemy himself, along with his fallen angels. He then expresses the outcome he desires from this element.

May this creature of yours, when used in your mysteries and endowed with your grace, serve to cast out demons and to banish disease. May everything that this water sprinkles in the homes and gatherings of the faithful be delivered from all that is unclean and hurtful. Let no breath of contagion hover there, no taint of corruption. Let all the wiles of the lurking enemy come to nothing. By the sprinkling of this water, may everything opposed to the safety and peace of the occupants of these homes be banished, so that in calling on your holy name, they may know the well-being they desire, and be protected from every peril through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Then, mixing the two elements, the minister continues his prayer, which is a marvel of precise specificity. God, source of irresistible might, and king of an invincible realm, the ever-glorious conqueror, who restrains the forces of the adversary, silencing the uproar of his rage, and valiantly subduing his wickedness. In awe and humility, we beg you, Lord, to regard with favor this creature thing of salt and water, to let the light of your kindness shine upon it, and to hallow it with do of your mercy, so that wherever it is sprinkled and your holy name is invoked, every assault

on the unclean spirit may be baffled, and all dread of the serpent's venom be cast out. To us who entreat you, mercy grant that the Holy Spirit may be with us wherever we may be, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Among the marvelous things about a Catholic blessing is that by the time you have produced holy water, the use of which concludes every Catholic blessing, you have already empowered the water so much against evil that the blessing itself is short and simple in comparison. Case in point, the blessing of a home within the Roman ritual is a mere three sentences long. As I prayed it that day, I asked the Lord to make the enemy feel the full effect of the church's

words and actions. God the Father Almighty, we fervently implore you for the sake of this home and its occupants and possessions that you may bless and sanctify them, enriching them by your kindness in every way possible. Pour out on them, Lord, heavenly due in good measure, as well as an abundance of earthly needs. Mercifully listen to their prayers and grant that their desires be fulfilled. At our lowly coming be pleased to bless and sanctify this home

as you once were pleased to bless the home of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Within these walls, let your angels of light preside and stand, watch over those who live here through Christ our Lord. Amen. It was about the time I concluded the blessing that the house's demon decided it was time for a formal introduction. There! That's it! Don't worry, don't worry. It's just trying to intimidate us. That demon's taunting, hit me with your best shot.

And that's exactly what we will do. We are going to go room to room and put holy water on every door, closet, every corner of this house. Everything will be blessed, and this thing is going to be gone. When we finished blessing each room on the main floor, we moved to the second, going from bedroom to bedroom. All the while, the music box was chiming away. Soon, the only room left was her uncle's room, which held the music box. When I entered it, I could see it sitting on the dresser.

I paused for a moment. So there it is. The box was rectangular and not large, about the size of a box and a half of tissues. It was finally carved wood with brass inlays and looked to, me to be about 80 to 100 years old. I set down the bowl of holy water and reached for the box to pick it up, which I did so with no problem. How did you do that? As soon as my hands touched it, it stopped chiming. I turned the box over in my hand examining its interior. Sure enough, it was a wind-up. I could see the brass keyhole through which the key would be inserted to wind the spring.

I opened the lid. Well, look at that. What? Will that just figures? I guess I should have expected that. Not like this day can get any stranger. Inside the music box was nothing but empty space. There were no mechanical parts whatsoever.

There was no cylinder, no comb, nor any other parts that could produce the sound. There was nothing but empty space. There was not even any evidence that the box ever held any such parts. I set the box back down and hit it with Holy Water, inside and out. Turning towards Serena, I said, In the name of Jesus, I bless this home and any foul spirits will depart now. Is it over?

I think so. It's done. You won't have any more trouble here. Thank you so much, Deacon. I think you'll make a great father. Oh, I hope so. We are happy to report that as of the last time they spoke, Serena's ceiling fans were operating at a normal circulatory velocity. We hope you enjoyed this episode.
