Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome, listener, to another Flop House mini episode, a miniature episode of the Flop House. You know the Flop House, of course, as the Internet's oldest bad movie podcast, probably. And usually on an episode, we watch a bad movie, and then we talk about it. When I say usually, I mean half the time. The other half of the time, we do whatever we want in these minis.
Starting point is 00:00:26 Today, I will be running this mini. I'll be Mission Control. That'll make sense in a moment. I'm Elliot Kalen and I'm joined by my two, two, let's say, space explorers. Sure. Name your names. Dan McCoy. Stuart Spaceman Wellington.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Oh, thank you. You're picking up what I'm laying down. I appreciate it. I like Elliot. Sorry, go on. No, no, Dan, what are you going to say? What do you like hearing what people like about me. I like that you encounter the same difficulty I do when introducing the manys, which is like, you know, it's not, it's not.
Starting point is 00:01:00 It's not that we usually talk about a movie anymore because, as you say, these many as happened half the time. But in the aggregate, there's certainly more movie episodes. I guess technically it's still true. It is still true that it's usual. Yeah, yeah. By the numbers. Well, that was Statsman, Dan.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Dan, of course, is our numbers guy. Which will need. I was Statsman. Numbers, numbers, numbers. We need our statistics guy. We need Stuart Spaceman Wellington. Stuart, how did you get the nickname Spaceman? So I went to outer space this one time and I came back.
Starting point is 00:01:39 I thought there'd be more to that. I thought it was a more interesting story. And that actually ties... Oh, you wanted me to stretch for a second. No, no. I went into outer space. No, because we're going to talk about going to space and how it should be very interesting,
Starting point is 00:01:51 how maybe it's not that interesting. These days, of course, everyone's talking about AI. And we're going to be covering that on today's flop. house, but I mean astronaut imagery. That's right. The other meaning of AI, because we're going to be talking about the only other one. I mean, there's also, there's also Al's Igloo,
Starting point is 00:02:09 but that's just a local business, you know, just it's an ice cream shop in Juneau, Alaska. So astronaut imagery, astronaut movies, guys, you would have to think off the top of your head. If I said, this person's job is to go into outer space, you would say, what a cool job, right? What a cool job. And yet, there are very, it is, because it's the frozen ways of space,
Starting point is 00:02:33 unless you're right near the sun, which case it's blazing hot. It's also very hot in space. Yeah, there's always an exception. Life finds a way, or in this case, the cold, lifeless void of space. Now, there are very fuel. I'm going to say this right now. It seems like such an amazing job. I'm going to let me say there's very few cool movies about astronauts.
Starting point is 00:02:53 I feel like there are so many movies about hit men, a job. No one really has. There's so many movies about professional athletes, which is a cool job. But again, I guess more people have that than astronauts, but it's not a job most people have. But astronauts, you think it'd be this amazing thing, but there's not that many movies where you said, give me a great astronaut movie. How many can you think of it? Now, well, it depends on what, like, what do you mean by saying cool?
Starting point is 00:03:20 Because there are two astronaut movies that I can think of all off the top of my head that I like quite a bit. Okay. And those are Apollo 13. Wow. Wow. Hold on. Let's wait a moment. Let's stop for a moment.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Just that Dan could not remember the number in the, in Apollo 13. There's a, well, Apollo 11 was pretty cool. There's a thing might be Giants album called Apollo 18. Oh, I see. So I have to like, in my head be like,
Starting point is 00:03:46 which thing in my, and the right stuff. And the right stuff. Yes. So those are great movies about astronauts. There are some of them, and those are both based on true stories, right? The thing I'm finding,
Starting point is 00:03:58 I was thinking about astronaut movies because again, everyone's talking about AI, so of course I'm about astronaut imagery. And I was thinking there's certain kinds of movies about astronauts that are really great. There's like a handful that are great, but then there's a lot that are not great.
Starting point is 00:04:12 And there's not very many in the middle. And so I was wondering, I want to talk to you guys today about astronaut movies. Why is there a dearth of them? And also, is it possible being an astronaut is actually not that cool a job because the first thing I want to start with is what makes a movie an astronaut movie.
Starting point is 00:04:31 There's a lot of movies set in outer space, but I wouldn't call all of them astronaut movies. So when I say space movies, do you guys, what do you think of? What's a space movie? Ice pirates, alien. Alien. Alien. What else?
Starting point is 00:04:43 Give me some more. Give me some more. Transformers, the movie. Star Wars. Okay. Now, would you call any of those astronaut movies? No. Not even alien, where they do wear like space suits when they go onto a planet.
Starting point is 00:04:54 But they're clearly sort of like blue-collar private workers. They're not the elite military scientists that astronauts often are, you know, test pilots. Yeah, yeah. So Star Wars, again, that's probably the most successful space movie that's ever made the most popular space movie. You wouldn't call them astronauts, right, even though they're flying around in spaceships. Why is that? Well, I mean, the most astronauty of them are like the X-wing pilots. And you think of that, like they're fighter pilots.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Like those are dog fights, but in space, quite famously. Like, literally, that's what they are. And how often do you think a real-life astronaut is involved in like a high-stakes fighter jet battle in space? Yeah, I think zero times because if I'm like the shuttles, the space, like they're not built for, you know, dodging and weaving. They kind of just float there. Yeah, they kind of, I mean, the fact that we still haven't come up with a way to get into orbit that is not. throwing a whole ton of shit out the back of a vehicle in order to push it up. And then eventually you get up there.
Starting point is 00:05:58 And space moves kind of slow, right? Like, there's no air. Space moves kind of slow around these parts. Out here in space, we move a little slower than you city folk. Welcome to my floating orbital porch. Sit around the cracker barrel. The crackers are floating out of the barrel. Here, have this pouch a lemonade.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Like grandma used to make, like Astro-Gramma used to make. Oh, for dessert, dipping dyes. Ice cream of the future, don't you know? What makes an astronaut ice cream is it's freeze-dry and it comes in a package. You could just throw that into space. It doesn't matter where it does. It tastes like someone froze some toothpaste. And we brush our teeth with ice cream.
Starting point is 00:06:42 Well, being an astronaut... It's a topsy-turvy world up here. In space, we do things a little backwards. There's no up, there's no down. You just kind of float. You might be talking to somebody's feet Because for them they're standing up But for you they're upside down
Starting point is 00:06:57 Doesn't matter who cares It's space baby Space is the ultimate fixture Yeah so So space sounds pretty fun So what so a lot of movies are space movies But they're not astronaut movies So what is it that would make something an astronaut movie
Starting point is 00:07:15 Like do they have to wear Do they have to be members of NASA Like do they have to be in a kind of like official function because like space truckers is clearly not an astronaut movie. They're truckers, you know, in space, you know. But is a movie, alien we've said is not an astronaut movie.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Is Event Horizon an astronaut movie? Interesting, interesting. There you're getting into a gray area. I wouldn't think of it as an astronaut movie, but if someone said that's an astronaut movie, I don't know that I would argue too much. You wouldn't get mad about it. Yeah, they seem to be some sort of official scientific expedition.
Starting point is 00:07:55 Yeah, and they go to hell. Yeah, an expedition to hell. I mean, how often, but again, how often if astronauts gone to hell in the official NASA logs? I don't know. They don't know how bad are they. That's fair. To the bone. When astronauts die, you don't know where they go, yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:15 Man, that song is still like, man, that song is still shorthand for a tough guy. Bad to the bone? I do it all the time at home, and my kids do not know that song, so they don't understand. Whenever I run a bath for them, I go, it's like,
Starting point is 00:08:26 blah, blah, blah, blah, bath. And I don't understand what that means. Now, the, now, in the beginning of that song, the nurse says, leave this one alone. She could tell us bad to the bone.
Starting point is 00:08:39 She's saying, leave a baby alone, just don't care for it. Yeah, because that will drive someone to be bad to the bone. Yeah, that's true. Nature and nurture.
Starting point is 00:08:46 Yeah. Chicken of the egg there. But I guess if you're bad to the bone already, nothing you can do can fix it. What test? What test is the nurse performing? I mean, you don't cut them open.
Starting point is 00:08:58 No, you don't bother counting their rings. There wouldn't be any yet. They were just born. Just the nurse, like, did he come out wearing a leather jacket and carrying a switchblade in his hand? Well, like that Exodus album cover. Now, maybe he's a kid on the Nirvana cover. Oh, naked.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Yeah, that's rare for a baby. Usually babies have the decency and the modesty to wear a little something. Do not fucking hang dong? At least wear a modesty pouch like they're on the set of a big budget movie, you know? Now, guys, that song Bad to the Bone. You know when it's from, right? When it's from? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:36 The 50s? Like, it seems like, I'm going to say the 60s. That song is from 1982. So this is something I will just think of every now and then where I'll be like, oh yeah, Bad to the Bone is an 80s song. But it feels like it's a much more old school song than that, right? Yeah. Because so much of the 80s, pop culture was, like, looking back to the 50s and 60s, right?
Starting point is 00:09:55 We're looking forward to the future. You know, just finally taking over media, caring about the things they like, like wearing a leather jacket and being bad to the bone. And being bad. Yeah, baby boomers were bad to the bone, but just for the environment and future homeownership by younger generations. Yeah. So let's think about astronaut movies for a moment. That's ostensibly what this episode was about. So, again, what would make something an astronaut?
Starting point is 00:10:19 movie then. They have to be like they got to be astronauts, right? I mean, there should be some there should be some like nod to science. Okay. So there wouldn't be like an astronaut heist movie. Like that would not that wouldn't work. It would be hard.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Yeah. They're not robbing the space bank. Well, were they sent into space to rob something? To NASA send them somewhere? I mean, if NASA, what would they be robbing? Is this the high roller sequel pitch that were John Travolta? You know, no. but you know what? This should be a Now You See Me sequel.
Starting point is 00:10:51 Oh my God. No, not yet. They haven't, right? They've got to rob like an alien space casino or something, and they've got to use their magic tricks and their astronaut training that they get, you know. One member of the group is an astronaut who doesn't care for their magic ways. Yeah, of course. They care for the deceitful ways, you know.
Starting point is 00:11:10 So they have to be, because in my mind, being an astronaut, an astronaut is kind of like a pirate movie. A pirate movie, they've got to be pirates, right? And they're going to do pirity things. Like, even if a movie was about a pirate, if it was about a retired pirate who's dealing with reconnecting to the family that he left behind when he went to the high seas,
Starting point is 00:11:28 I still wouldn't really call that a pirate movie. Yeah. And they're like, you know, there are things that are more astronaut movie tropes where I'm like, you don't have to have it in to be an astronaut movie. But if you have it in there, like this is definitely an astronaut movie.
Starting point is 00:11:46 So name some of those tropes. What are some of those tropes? Well, you know, like the, you know, like the apex of the form, of course, Rocket Man starring Harland Williams. I'm in Rocket Man starring Elton John, which again is not actually an astronaut movie, yeah. It's a song. I think a trope that really marks it as an astronaut movie is you have the NASA training. You got to be like spun around in that thing.
Starting point is 00:12:07 NASA training sequence. And your face has got to go all flat and flapping the wind. There's got to be some moment where, or there should be some moment where the, let's expand it more. Because when I think Astrook movies. Like Space Camp also has some astronaut training in. Yes, space camp, you know what, that's not what I hadn't even thought about, but space camp is definitely an astronaut movie. The movie that I think of most is 2001 of space obviously, as like a movie about astronauts. That doesn't have a training sequence, but it does have them dealing with the effects of outer space and physical reality on the body.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Right. Like he's got to run around jog to keep his muscle and bone density or whatever. And like, when he goes into the airlock without his helmet, he's in danger because you can't be in decompressed airless space for too long. So there's got to be something where it's about like the effect of space, the danger of space on you or the effect of space condition. Because that's another difference between a space, an astronaut movie and a pirate movie, is that pirates exist in a place where there's gravity, oxygen. They're not really worrying that there's the ocean to deal with. But they're not really worrying that much about can I breathe unless they fall in said ocean. So I think more like an octopus wraps its tentacle around their neck.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Exactly. Or right on their face. You got that octopus's beak right. in your mouth. Ugh, that'd be horrible. It's biting your tongue. Have they ever done that in a pirate movie? That sounds horrifying.
Starting point is 00:13:24 That would be really good, Dan. I don't recall that. I don't have it in my log books. Octopi are super smart, too, so they know exactly the perfect time to latch on. Yeah, and they know the sweetest, softest part is the tongue. They'd want to go for that. I love octopi. I think they're really amazing animals, but it always bothers me that they have.
Starting point is 00:13:41 I say you're talking about how delicious they are. I do like to eat them, too. They taste really good. But, and I always feel bad eating. sad part about it because they're smart but they're so smart and their brains go all throughout their bodies their tentacles have neural networks in them so when I'm eating their tentacles I'm like I'm eating the smart part too it's not even like I'm eating the dumb part of it because there are no dumb parts but it always throws me off that they have beaks I don't like that at all it makes
Starting point is 00:14:04 it sounds like very uncomfortable a self-help book by the way there are no dumb parts there are no dumb parts only dumb actors but I do think Elliot you're on to something here that maybe disqualifies event horizon, which is that even if they're fantastical elements, it has to be sort of grounded in some sort of scientific reality. Uh-huh. So like, you know, more something like Project Hail Mary, you don't think of it as an astronaut movie foremost, maybe,
Starting point is 00:14:38 but like that's an astronaut movie because it's all grounded in this sort of scientific. I mean, I do think of it as an astronaut movie because he's an astronaut, right? What about... Well, he's drafted into it. I haven't seen it. Gotta be honest. But I'm just going by the poster. You said heist movies.
Starting point is 00:14:53 What about a movie like Ad Astra? Where there is like a car chase on the moon. I have to admit, I haven't seen Ad Astra. You're a dad. You're like the perfect target for that. I haven't seen it either. It's for science fiction dads. The car chase on the moon sequence is awesome.
Starting point is 00:15:09 That sounds so good. I'll have to watch it. I assume it's an astronaut movie because the poster has Brad Pitt in an astronaut costume. But it looks real sad. At the time I was like, I don't need a sad astronaut. Yeah, sad dad astronaut. But like... Sad astronaut.
Starting point is 00:15:20 A sad astronaut. Yeah. But like when I, I'll tell you, when I started thinking about astronaut movies and we'll take a break shortly and then we'll come back and I want to see if we can come up with the 10 greatest astronaut movies. Which might mean expanding the boundaries to movies that are either not great or not astronaut movies. But when I think of astronaut movies like the Martian is pretty high up on the list, gravity is pretty high up list. These are both about astronauts in space dealing with space problems. as opposed to... More space, more space problems.
Starting point is 00:15:48 I mean, it's literally true. More space, more problems. Space is infinite and vast. It gives me a lot of problems, you know. But it's hard for me to think of an astronaut movie that is not about, like, the problems of being an astronaut. And so I was thinking, like, is Moon an astronaut movie? Because that's really more about the problems of being a weird clone or something.
Starting point is 00:16:07 But it... Sunshine? Is Sunshine an astronaut movie? Exactly. Like, they have a thing they're doing. Like, Sunshine and Project Hail Mary are. Salaris? Solaris.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Is Solaris an astronaut movie? It kind of is, you know? But like, it's easy about the ones that are about biographical movies about astronauts. Ball 13, the right stuff. Like, is silent running an astronaut movie? I think so, but I'm not sure. No, you're right. These are like, some of these are more...
Starting point is 00:16:36 Isn't it about bobsledding? No, that's cool running. Oh. Some of these are more... These are all running movies. Cool running. silent running, run, silent, run deep. Yeah, you know.
Starting point is 00:16:47 The loneliness long distance runner. Yeah. The running man. Yeah. Running man, the new one. Yeah. These are like science fiction movies. Run low to run.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Logan's run. Logan's run. Yeah, exactly. Logans do run. Always. It's hard to catch a Logan. They're always running. Yeah. Dan, you're saying some of these?
Starting point is 00:17:06 No, it's funny because like I came so close to having a window and then like the train kept moving. It closed. Yeah, close fast. No, no, no. Like a lot of these, I think are. are most accurately science fiction movies with astronauts in them. Whereas like an astronaut movie,
Starting point is 00:17:21 like I'm trying to think of like a comparison, a point of comparison. It's like a mob movie. Like is a mob movie. It's maybe a point of comparison where it's like it's about the job. It's about the job that you have. And the job that you have is astronaut. And what is like a mob movie is always about in being involved with.
Starting point is 00:17:37 It's very rare that you have. I mean, sometimes you have a mob movie about a mobster who does something. Do's things. Yeah. You got to induce these things when a Sicilian vampire shows up. You know, you know, and it's called innocent blood. Innocent Blood. Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Or that Frank DeAngelo. Sicilian vampire. Yeah. You could cross the streams a little bit there. Like Mickey Blue Eyes is a mob movie, but it's about a guy who like falls in love with a mobster's daughter. Yeah. I think this is like the second time in two weeks he brought up Mickey Blue Eyes. For some reason, Mickey Blue Eyes is on my mind and I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Moves large in L.A. It's imagination. Somehow, yeah. I guess I guess it's, Hugh Graham. most famous movie, probably, right? Yeah, that's why when you see Hugh Graham on the street, you're like, Hey, Mickey! Mickey Blue Eyes. He goes, yes, yes, people call me that.
Starting point is 00:18:22 People call me that. Well, just, yes, sir, thank you for seeing the movie. That's me doing Rob Bryan's impression of Hugh Grant. It's pretty good. He does a great Hugh Grant impression. Whereas real Hugh Grant probably just sort of frowns at you and walks away. Yes, exactly. Well, I mean, there's a reason that he was, it's not my story to tell, but when people
Starting point is 00:18:43 ask John Stewart before the daily show sometimes. He'll be like, who was your least favorite guest? And they're like, he's like, Hugh Grant. Hugh Grant was just not very pleasant for people when he was there. Ulysses S. Grant, on the other hand, his great-grandfather, saved the union. Well, next time John Stewart comes on the flop house, we'll have to pick his brain about that. What's that happening, Elliot? Let me get back to you about that.
Starting point is 00:19:04 You're probably closest to him. We couldn't work on a Monday because that's the one day he works. Yeah, we don't normally record on Mondays. That shouldn't be too big a problem. I haven't talked to John in a while. Yeah, maybe I'll ask him to be on this podcast jar. Now's the time to call in that shit. Yeah, now's the time when he owes me the least.
Starting point is 00:19:22 Yeah. So, Astro, I think, let's go to our ads in a moment. And I think we're having trouble defining what an astronaut movie is, maybe because it's not a real genre of movie. But that's okay. But I think we've agreed that it is about being an astronaut. It's hard to do an astronaut movie where you just happen to be an astronaut
Starting point is 00:19:39 and some other story is happening. Maybe because there's not very much going on in space. Like, if you're out in space, you are being an astronaut. It's not an along the way thing. And so I think we're going to have to come up with our list of the 10 greatest astronaut movies.
Starting point is 00:19:54 We might have to argue a little bit about which ones are astronaut movies and which are not. But before we do that, let's take a quick break. Well, gang, it's that time of year again. That's right. Labor Day is here, which means you can't wear white. No. Well, yes, but no, it's Great British Bake Off season. Oh, right. And that means it's time to draft your teams and play along. There's a new judge in town, but the game's the same. Draft your bakers,
Starting point is 00:20:25 score points like it's fantasy football, and talk-smacking a group chat. I wonder what Nigella Lawson would think about the Scribble. So, listen to TV Chef Fantasy League with me, Mike Cavalon. Ifiwai, way. And Sierra Cato. New episodes every week at maximum fun.org, or wherever you get your podcasts. Starting point is 00:25:39 The only movie that I know of where Jimmy Stewart plays a clown. So if that's a fetish for you, then this is the episode to watch. Go to theflophouse.sympaltics.com. You can buy tickets for individual episodes or you can buy a season pass that's six episodes for the cost of five. And if you can't make it to the actual live airing,
Starting point is 00:25:57 that's okay. Let's say you missed our Green Book episode. That's okay. If your ticket gets you access exclusively to the video record, I was going to say record or record and I got them mixed up and instead I didn't make a sound
Starting point is 00:26:09 that made sense. It gets you access to the video of the show, and that video will stay up and be available for you to watch through the end of February because flop TV
Starting point is 00:26:17 is the first Saturday of every month, September through February. You can watch those videos whenever you want, and at the end of February, they go to the Flophouse vault. So don't miss your chance.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Go to theflophouse. com for all new live flop TV episodes. And now let's return to our Astro Talk. So guys, astronauts, we know what they are. We know an astronaut movie
Starting point is 00:26:40 has to involve. Yeah. We all know what they're like. There's no surprises. We know an astronaut movie has to involve some kind of scientific reality in some way about space travel. It doesn't have to be totally accurate, probably. But it has to involve some kind of real world situation that does not involve wookies or jumping into hyperspace or walking out on the surface of a planet and you don't need to wear a spacesuit.
Starting point is 00:27:08 Walking on sunshine. That happens in the movie sunshine. Yeah, and it happens in the song, Walking on the Sun, by, who was that? Smash mouth. Smash mouth. That's right. You got to admire a guy who sings, even though his mouse got smashed. He's not going to let it stop up.
Starting point is 00:27:25 I'm not going to let that keep me down. No, he gets knocked down. His mouth smashed, but he gets up again. Nobody's going to keep him down. That's a different band at that song. You got to admit, and those guys, their chumbas. Their chumbas got one. And they're still performing even with one,
Starting point is 00:27:41 Chumbas? You got to admire that. You got to admire the sick two-diveness. Let's give a moment of silence. For all those chumbas that got wumbud, yeah. You know, wumbying of chumbas is one of the great tragedies you don't get here. You're getting talked about very much. Because mostly because it's hard to say.
Starting point is 00:27:57 Yes, thank you, Dan, for now justifying this episode's existence. We finally did it. Okay, good. Go find your local charity that's dealing with Wombud Chumbas. See what you can do to help. Because too many chumbas are being wumbud, and someone's got to talk about it.
Starting point is 00:28:12 Hashtag, No more Wamba Chumbas. Whoever talked about it was Dr. Seuss. And he was shouted down at the American Medical Association Convention. They hired him to talk. They were not a real doctor. They would scream. What do you know about this?
Starting point is 00:28:28 Now, the problem when you chumba, and he just stopped because he couldn't think of any other words. He couldn't think of words and rhyme. Yeah. It's just weird because he just makes them up normally. No, Dan, he got a dictionary from the future. Those are all future words. Oh, that makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:28:43 That's how we won all those bets, right? Yeah, exactly. There's the great, or there's the... Oxford's Word of the Year and the future is going to be this. There's no way. There's no way. That word doesn't even exist as up yet. Yeah, that's why there's that, of course, Seuss world
Starting point is 00:29:02 where Dr. Seuss took over and made everything terrible. Yeah. Everyone has to wear stars on their bellies and so forth. Westworld and future world. Seuss World. Yeah. Oh, I'd love that. All the robots are kind of weird, big birds and stuff like that.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Yeah. These trees, they're all corkscrewed. They're like all alligators that are furry somehow. I was going to say, it could be like the classic science fiction story, Mimsy were the Borogovs made into a movie The Last Mimsy, in which the Jabberwaki is actually the instructions for making kind of like interdimensional either communicator or traveling thing or something like that. Anyway, it's a great short story. I never saw the movie. I remember reading the short story and being like, they should make a movie of this
Starting point is 00:29:44 and then finding out they had already. And did I run out to see the movie? I did not. It's like a classic. Touching on what we're going to talk about next week. Yeah, how we answer a letter's question. Because we do some time travel here at the Flop House, which is called recording the episodes out of order.
Starting point is 00:30:00 So, guys, we've talked enough about, you can never talk enough about how Wombas need to stop being Chamba. Or vice versa. Chumbas don't stop being Womba. letter box spread on last Memsey. Oh, wow. The average rating is three, but it's like almost like a straight line across of
Starting point is 00:30:16 like, you know, reviews all over the place. That is a rare one. Wow. We might have to see it to find out. So an astronaut movie can't do all the things that a science fiction movie does. There's some science fictional element to it usually, unless it's like Apollo 13 or First Man or the right
Starting point is 00:30:32 stuff where it's just about a real astronaut. How was First Man? I didn't see it. I like it quite a bit. First Man is good. I found myself having, I could not connect to it emotionally. I found it very cold. And at times I was like,
Starting point is 00:30:45 this feels like a really well-done version of the movie they show you at the Air and Space Museum. Okay. But it's very well done. But it's, I found myself having trouble connecting to it. I mean, in part it was, the character as presented is kind of cold.
Starting point is 00:30:59 But that's sort of what was interesting to me to do that. But I feel like I would have. And that's played by Gosling. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, but he's so warm. He's also cool. He's also very cool.
Starting point is 00:31:10 He is cool. I've been telling a lot. And drive? Yeah, he's super cool. That jacket? That's wearing that jacket. Oh my God. You weren't cool.
Starting point is 00:31:18 You couldn't wear that. He's like a real hero and a real human being. You look like a fool. No, I would look terribly foolish wearing that. Yeah. And of course, with my fingerless driving gloves, too. I don't look more foolish, yeah. Do you think your kids would think you were cool if you start wearing fingerless driving gloves?
Starting point is 00:31:32 There is nothing I can do that would make my kids think I was cool. I could be Kendrick Lamar. and they would decide Kendrick Lamar is not cool anymore. That's what happened. And they hate Drake. And they hate Drake by kids. I don't think they'd ever heard his music,
Starting point is 00:31:46 but they hate him because they know Kendrick Lamar doesn't like him. So it's a weird thing when your kids, when your kids constantly want to listen to the clean radio version of a song about how Kendrick Lamar is a song about another rapper being a pedophile. And they're walking around going, they're not like us. And I'm like, guys, it's a weird song for you just to be singing, just walking around the house.
Starting point is 00:32:08 You know. So anyway, let's try to think, just off the five of our head. Let's think about the greatest movies, astronaut movies, movies about astronauts. They might have some science fictional element. They might be a real life story of a real astronaut that really lived. Fantastic Four. Again, I feel like, so it's Fantastic Four an astronaut movie. They go into space.
Starting point is 00:32:28 They are astronauts. Yeah. Does it count as an astronaut movie? I think that's an element in the film. Okay. Rather than being an astronaut movie. You know what? But I'm going to argue, I'm going to argue, maybe it is an astronaut movie.
Starting point is 00:32:38 because that's the most interesting part of the movie, to be honest, is them being astronauts. Yeah. If I'm being, if I'm being honest. And like many astronaut movies, it's a little sad. So. This is the new one. I haven't seen the new one yet. The new Fantastic Corps is very, so, what are you talking about?
Starting point is 00:32:55 Jessica, Alba, Michael Chickles. No, the other one, the one with Michael B. Jordan and, uh... Oh, you're like... The one we did on the podcast. That one, they're not... I would not call that an astronaut movie. No. I would say they're more like astronauts than the new one.
Starting point is 00:33:09 But this is, and this is my issue. I may have talked about this before with the Fantastic Four movie. People were like, oh, yeah, it was good. I want to see it. And so you should watch it. And I watched it. I found it so dower and so sad and depressing. It's so.
Starting point is 00:33:20 It had a weird tone. Yeah. It's very. Jack Kirby, known for bland, boring shit. Jack Kirby is known for not, yeah, he's not known for investing energy and excitement into everything he's doing. And I did like when Galactus showed up at the end. I imagine that's the part I'd be most excited for.
Starting point is 00:33:37 Certainly, the fact that Galactus looks like Galactus from the comics is where even then they like didn't. Stopping around. They didn't get his character quite right. He's a little too evil at part. He's like, hmm, insects. And I'm like, that's not something he would do. He has no emotions.
Starting point is 00:33:48 He's just hungry. He's just hungry. He's just hungry. He's just a hungry man. Hungryman dinners for Galactus, that's a planet. How's, is Roaring Nad in it or Norin Rad? No, Nornrad is not in it because the Silver Surfer is shallow ball in this version. And it's a big waste of what's your name?
Starting point is 00:34:07 Julia Julia Fox? No. No, from Ozarks and, you know. I don't know. Julia Garner.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Julia Garner. She's really great. She's a great actress and they don't really give her much of anything to do in it. What hell is Julia Fox? I don't know. Where is she?
Starting point is 00:34:25 Who is she? From, wait, who is she? Yeah. From fucking uncut gems. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah, that's her. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:34:35 No, that's a different person. That's just like, It's like one of those things where I pull a name out of somewhere. I'm like, I don't even know who I'm talking about. This is why they took away your telephone. Some old men, they take away their car keys. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because we go, Siri, call Bill Biv DeVoe.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Who's that? Can I call them? They just took it away, yeah. Call. Took the president. I like it. Maybe that's my name. That's my name now.
Starting point is 00:35:03 Call me Bell. That's why we, yeah, he has a cheater button now. Call Tony, Tony, Tony. But spell three different ways. Don't spell it the same way. Spell it three different ways. Yeah, this is Tony Colette. That's not who I'm trying to call.
Starting point is 00:35:22 You only spell Tony one way. Do you think she ever checks in at a hotel with Tony spelled a different way just so that nobody knows? Just incognito. The mafia mom on herself? Yes. Yeah. So back to Astroa Movies.
Starting point is 00:35:35 So let's just think of what are the great astronaut movies. We mentioned a couple of them. We mentioned... Yeah, no, I think Apollo 13 and the right stuff are have to top the list. We mentioned Apollo 13. We mentioned the right stuff, but... I mentioned 2001, which is, again, science fiction movie, but I feel like it is about being an astronaut.
Starting point is 00:35:51 You know, I mentioned gravity. That's an astronaut movie. That's up there. What other ones? Dark Star, is that an astronaut movie? It's about being an astronaut. Yeah. I wouldn't... It's a little too silly. Probably not the astronauts' wife because that's about being an astronaut's wife.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Yeah, and also that's not really, it's about he comes back with like an alien inside of him, right? Yeah. What about, yeah, what about species two? Are there any astronauts and species too? Yeah, the main guy's an astronaut who comes back, but now he's a species. I forgot about that. So, like, what are the other ones that are? I think the Martian, I think you mentioned before.
Starting point is 00:36:27 The Martian, definitely. That's an astronaut. That's an astronaut movie. Well, that's a good question, yeah. I would call that an astronaut movie. It's a good robot movie. Yeah, but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about astronaut movies.
Starting point is 00:36:39 Oh, right. I think we did we do, I think we did a one about robot movies at some point, but it was a movie where the robot had to be the star of it. Yeah, probably. Is space cowboys? Is that an astronaut movie? Damn. That's definitely an astronaut movie.
Starting point is 00:36:53 Okay. I don't know if it's one of the all-time best astronaut movies. Let's see how many we can think of, Dan. What about Armageddon? Armageddon? Is that an astronaut movie? It's a half-astron, half-driller movie. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:37:05 Okay. Because it's also, it's not really like... A disaster not movie. You know what? That's a disaster not movie. It is a disaster. Again, I'm going to read down. Project Hail Mary, I didn't see it.
Starting point is 00:37:17 Is that an astronaut movie? Yeah, I'd say so. I'd say so, yeah. I would also... I mean, I would put First Man up there. I know you didn't like this much. No, I mean, First Man is definitely an astronaut movie. We're just thinking of Asteroom movies right now.
Starting point is 00:37:29 We're just naming movies. Just naming movies. Is the astronaut farmer? I never saw it. Is that an astronaut movie? It's about a farmer who becomes an astronaut. Is it a farmer movie? That's the one with Billy Bob Thornton,
Starting point is 00:37:38 where he's a farmer who builds a spaceship and becomes an astronaut. Oh. Wasn't that October Sky? No, that's a different movie. October Sky. Yeah. What about fire in the sky?
Starting point is 00:37:50 Now, that's not an astronaut movie. That's an alien abduction movie. Is October Sky, does he become an astronaut in that? Or is he just a, is he just an astro-astronomer? October Sky. That's the one. That's the one. That's the one.
Starting point is 00:38:06 Yeah. He becomes a NASA engineer. He's an amateur rocketeer who becomes a NASA engineer. It's a true story. But he is not an astronaut. He works for NASA, but he is not an astronaut. Does not go to space. Sorry, October Sky.
Starting point is 00:38:17 You're burnt. You don't get to me one. Sorry. What about Hidden Figures? Now, again, Hidden Figures is a NASA movie, but they're not astronauts. Ashton. It's not adjacent. You actually never see an astronaut as far as I can tell in that movie.
Starting point is 00:38:30 It's just about the hidden figures. And you looked. You were really frame by frame in it. I was wearing that movie like crazy, looking for an an astronaut and looking for Waldo, too, to be honest. But I do that with every movie, just to see if he crept in there. What about Airplane 2? They go into space,
Starting point is 00:38:43 but I think they're not really astronauts, right? If Dark Star is too silly to be an astronaut movie, a movie about astronauts, then I think Airplane 2 is not. Mission to Mars, is that an astronaut movie? I think that counts, yeah. Okay. Now, we said 2001, what about 2010, the year we make contact?
Starting point is 00:39:02 I've never seen it. I've never seen it. I've seen it. I'm going to put it on there. It's not good, but it is a movie about people going into space and it's vaguely realistic. At Astra, Stuart, you're making a pretty good case for being an astronaut movie. I feel like it's like on the line of being more sci-fi
Starting point is 00:39:18 than astronaut movie, but I think it's still... And I think Sunshine goes on there too. Sunshine goes on there. And I'm going to put silent running on there, to be honest, because it's about living in space as opposed to... You know that one, right? The one where Bruce Derns the astronaut and he's got those little robots. It's a science fiction movie, but it's not like a...
Starting point is 00:39:34 It's not like, there's nothing in it that is incredibly unrealistic. He doesn't meet a wacky alien that wraps. Yeah, it's not enemy mine or something. Yes, exactly. Like enemy mine, I would not call an astronaut movie. Yeah. The last starfighter, not an astronaut movie. Capricorn 1 is a fake astronaut movie?
Starting point is 00:39:52 Oh, but they are real astronauts. Oh, damn, you have, you, this is, now we're getting into Talmudic territory. It's Capricorn 1 an astronaut. They are astronauts, but they don't go into space. And the movie is not about their space trip, but it's, about the conspiracy. Oh, man, is that an astronaut movie? Guys, we may have,
Starting point is 00:40:09 Dan, you may have hit on the first astronaut movie that is like there are astronauts in it, but it's not about being an astronaut. Like we were talking about, it's hard to do with mob movies. I'm going to put it on. It exists in a suspended state where it's both astronaut and non-astrottenger's.
Starting point is 00:40:24 Exactly, Schrodinger's astronaut movie, yeah. And I'm going to point people to, I think it may still be up on YouTube. I'm not sure my video where I put out, Capricorn won the Elliott Gould edition, where it was just about Elliot. character in the movie.
Starting point is 00:40:36 Oh, wow. So the Astropercorn one's a funny movie because there's so many scenes of Elliot Gould hearing information from people and then repeating it back to them. Oh, really? Yeah. Look on YouTube for my Capricorn One video. Okay. You'll see. So, okay, we got a lot of movies on this list now.
Starting point is 00:40:55 What about Moon Raker? I would call Moon Raker. Well, no, probably not an astronaut movie. What about, what was it called? Moonfall? What was the... Moonfall, they don't go into it. space.
Starting point is 00:41:05 No. They do eventually. Do they? They find that the moon's hollow, remember? Oh, right. They do. You know what? Yell it,
Starting point is 00:41:12 Moonfall, maybe. No, it's not an astronaut movie. Because it's not, well, I don't know. Guys, what do you think? Vote on it. I don't know. No, it's not.
Starting point is 00:41:18 I mean, there is an astronaut in it, but I think we can say it's not one. And we, I think we made decide event horizon is probably not an astronaut movie. Yeah. More of a sci-fi horror movie. Yes. So let's start putting these movies into a list,
Starting point is 00:41:31 shall we run along. Let's put it to put a list. Did we miss any? I'm going to toss space camp in there because it is a camp, but it is a NASA run camp. And they do go into space. They do accidentally go into space. How do you go accidentally go into space?
Starting point is 00:41:44 They plan. You put Max into space. Yeah. He gets Max back from space. He has to. He heard lunch and he thought they said launch. So he hit the lunch button or whatever. So I think there are a couple that we can definitely agree are on the list of best
Starting point is 00:41:57 Astroo Movies. Apollo 13, for sure. The right stuff. Sure. 2001. 2001. Sure. I'll put first man on there. It's a really, it is a very good movie about being an astronaut. Gravity, I think. I'll put gravity on there. I think the Martian should go on there. Okay. That could happen. You can get lost on a, let's get stuck on a plant after grilled potatoes.
Starting point is 00:42:18 It could happen to you. That's what it could happen to you should be about. Again, I call back, call forward to next week. Yeah. It could happen to you. Could be about getting trapped on Mars. If you're an astronaut or Matt Damon, because that's who it happened to. And Matt, the Martian and And interstellar are such fun, that's a fun double feature, because you get to see both sides of Matt Damon, the cool, fun astronaut who looks for the best things and the shitty astronaut who is ready to kill humanity if it means he's not stuck on a rock forever.
Starting point is 00:42:48 It's how often, what are the odds, the same guy, it would happen to him twice that he get marooned on another planet. What are the odds? What are the odds? I hope the math additions from Hidden Figures can write in and tell us what the odds are, that Matt Damon would twice get stuck marooned on an alien person. Yeah, like a real Odysseus.
Starting point is 00:43:06 Yeah. What are the odds that every island they would land on? There would be some kind of monster that wants to eat them. Yeah, I mean, how far away are they? These are like new things to them. I was like, oh, we don't have any of these monsters where I come from, but every island over here has monsters. This is the Monster Sea, I guess.
Starting point is 00:43:22 It's the Monster Terranian Sea. That movie, I really liked The Odyssey a lot. I thought it was really good. But the part where they're running away from the shades of the dead after they talk to Tyreseus, I'm like, why do they have to run this time? Half this movie is them running from things to get back to their votes, you know. Yeah, probably the dead can just hang out. Yes.
Starting point is 00:43:40 So we've got, yeah, exactly. I mean, what are they going to get from them? Nothing. They're just mad and mad. Yeah, I mean, that's the whole thing. So they're kind of whittled down to a single emotion and that's vengeance. I guess that's true. That's true.
Starting point is 00:43:51 So we've got one, two, three, four, five, six movies on here. We don't have to order them. We don't have to order. That's six movies. Apollo 13, 13, the right stuff, 2001, Gravity, the Martian, First Man. I think any of those would look fine on a list. of the top 10 greatest astronaut movies. Now is when we start to get into the more difficult.
Starting point is 00:44:08 What are the final four? What are the fantastic four, some might say? I think not fantastic four. That's not one of them. I though admire Stewart nominating a movie he has not seen for the list. Again, Rocket Man, starring Harland Wilson. Wow.
Starting point is 00:44:22 Williams. Harlan Wilson. It's not familiar. You might be thinking of Harold Wilson, the former British prime minister, perhaps. Probably was. Yeah. Harlem Ellison?
Starting point is 00:44:31 No, clearly I'm not. I'm not familiar enough with Rocket Man to make that claim. No. You haven't seen it? I've seen it. I've seen Rocket Man. Did you see the Elton John Rocket Man also? I did not see the Elton.
Starting point is 00:44:44 So in the Battle of the Rocket Men, you can't tell me which is the better Rocket Man. Well, has Stewart seen the Harland Will? No, I haven't. If only I could combine you into the perfect man, one who has seen both versions of Rocket Man. The duality of Rocket Man. Instead, we're this like Jack on Hyde situation. Inside of each of us, there's two Matt Damon's and two Rocket Man, but we don't know which one.
Starting point is 00:45:07 No. Not until you crack is open. So what if Jekyll and Hyde was just, when he's Dr. Jekylley, thinks Rocket Man, the Ellen John movie is the better. When he's Mr. Hyde, he thinks the Harlan Williams one is the better. Yeah, I mean, I would imagine he is like that. A few years ago, my younger son,
Starting point is 00:45:23 he went as Halloween as the wizard from a kid's movie called Spooky Buddies. These are the movies that are spin-off of Airbug. Right, right. It's a bunch of puppies. And he loved these movies. There's Treasure Buddies. There's Space Buddies. He loved his movies for a long.
Starting point is 00:45:38 Is Space Buddies an astronaut movie? Yes. Space Buddies is an astronaut movie. You know what? We've got to put that on the list. Hold on. But he wanted to be the bad guy from Spooky Buddies, who's this evil warlock.
Starting point is 00:45:49 And I was like, this warlock seems so familiar. And then until I realized it was Harlan Williams playing it. And I'm like, my son is going out for Halloween dressed as Harlan Williams, basically. Like he's in a Harlem Williams costume. It's like, that's fine. That's okay with me. What a magical world. Exactly.
Starting point is 00:46:01 So is Space Buddies one of the final four? Let me just throw out some movies. I'm just going to name them one after another. You tell me if you think they should be in the final four. Okay. Armageddon. No. I don't think it's astronauty enough.
Starting point is 00:46:15 Okay. Sunshine. Maybe. Maybe. And that's a maybe. What about Space Cowboys? It is very... It's very astronauty.
Starting point is 00:46:26 So I guess I'll say, sure. One of the top ten astronaut movies ever made. No, I'm going to fight. Well, we got to find some other ones. Okay, let's see. What about... You can't say that every time we veto an option. You're saying that same shit when we say space buddies.
Starting point is 00:46:41 You're like, something's got to go in there. Why's all these space buddies? We have ten fingers. Got to have a top ten. You got to put something on there. What about interstellar? Okay. Sure, because I think it's a very good movie.
Starting point is 00:46:53 Okay, and it feels astronauty. They're doing the astronaut stuff. Space Cowboys. What, you just said space cowboys? Yeah, but have you? We thought it. Have you seconded yet? Okay. Okay.
Starting point is 00:47:04 Okay. What about mission to Mars? No. Okay. It's an astronaut movie, but all right. Not one of the top ten best. 2010, the year we made contact. Well, I mean, if we've gotten this far,
Starting point is 00:47:14 there are already astronaut movies. We're trying to pick our favorites. That's true. That's true. Good point. Now we're splitting airs about movies. Okay, what about silent running? Silent running?
Starting point is 00:47:22 He's the astronaut. He's got the last trees. He's got a robot take care of them. It is kind of a classic. It's a good movie. It's a good movie. Yeah, I'll put a vote in for sure. I've had that one on.
Starting point is 00:47:31 vote for that too. Okay. So then we got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Eight, we need two more movies. Okay. Space Cowboys. What do you think about that? Elliot, I'm going to be frank with you. I'm more inclined to vote Space Camp than Space Cowboys. Okay. It might be my nostalgia. What about Space Buddies? What about Space Buddies? I figured that was going to be ten no matter what. Yeah, put that number 10. Space Buddies. Okay, so Space Buddy is the movie where the puppy's going to space. Yeah, so we just need one more. Dan is saying Space Camp. What are the other options?
Starting point is 00:48:03 You've also got Ad Astra. Not to be confused with Ed Asner, who's a person. Yeah, if you put him into space. If it was called Ed Asner in Ad Astra, I would have seen that movie opening night. Yeah. Ed Asner has to go into space. Take my money out of my pockets. How much money you have to pay for this ticket?
Starting point is 00:48:20 Project Hail Mary, again, I haven't seen it yet. Astronaut farmer, about a farmer who becomes an astronaut. I haven't seen it. October Sky was mentioned. That's not about an astronaut. Take that off the list. and Sunshine we mentioned and Space Cowboys. Sunshine wasn't already on there. Was not already on the list.
Starting point is 00:48:39 Yeah, let's go with that. Just because we don't like it a lot. Okay. I mean, it's not the most astronauty of them. No. But we already decided it's an astronaut movie. If Sunshine's an astronaut movie, then I feel like alien is an astronaut movie.
Starting point is 00:48:50 Look, we already said that we decided that these are astronaut movies. Now we're just talking about the ones that we like. Right, I've already lost control. You lost control, my friend. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, then we have our 10. We have our top 10 astronaut movies.
Starting point is 00:49:03 I'm going to give Space Cowboys an honorable mention. Sure. Why not? Is this fucking episode sponsored by Space Cowboys? I didn't want to tell you guys. Space Cowboys slipped me a 20. Elliot Best... Like, don't worry, guys, you're a shoe in.
Starting point is 00:49:17 There's no way they're not going to say. You're about astronauts. What a cast. Clint Eastwood, James Garner, Morgan Freeman, I think. Who else is in this movie? I don't remember. Clint Eastwood. I said Clint Eastwood.
Starting point is 00:49:29 Yeah. Okay. Garner. Tommy Lee Jones. Tommy Lee Jones. TLJ. Come on. Donald Sutherland. Not Morgan Freeman. I was wrong about that. I don't know why I assumed he was one of the He's an old dude. He's a lot of old dude movies.
Starting point is 00:49:43 Yeah, he was actually still a little too young to be in the old dude movies. But there was a period where he was in all the old dude movies. Oh, this was the year 2000. He was plenty old by that time. How old was Morgan Freeman in 2000? He was 63 years old. But there's the era later on. Let's look at Morgan Freeman.
Starting point is 00:50:01 He's in the old man movies when like Robert De Niro is in old man movies. Morgan. No, that's more farm. More farm collar? No, that's Frank Morpork. That's the city from Discworlds, yeah. Okay, all filmography. I feel like I can't, I can never make fun of Dan for not knowing of Jackie Chains in a movie now that I've mixed up Donald Sutherland and Morgan Freeman.
Starting point is 00:50:22 But, you know. So we got this period here. Okay. Like when you see Morgan Freeman's butt in Animal House? Yeah, exactly. Yeah, when Morgan Freeman gives that big long speech in JFK, yeah. Just getting started, going in style. Oh, right, going in style remake or whatever, yeah.
Starting point is 00:50:40 There was the, geez, wow, these are actually more spread out than Last Vegas. That's the one I remember most, just last Vegas, yeah. Yeah, I feel like the red where they're all old. Yeah, their old assassins. That's the whole point. We're not doing old movies. The bucket list. Yeah, but save this for when we do old.
Starting point is 00:50:59 person movies. What counts as an old person movie? Is clueless an old person movie? Is Fast Times at Ridgemont High an old person movie? No. Like he really just said, is that an old person movie? There's no way of knowing. But he real, he cornered the market on movies where like the point is like
Starting point is 00:51:14 these guys are old and they're doing something. Is Dennis the menace an old person movie? Because Mr. Wilson is old. Yeah. The second lead. The title character is young. Yeah, but I mean, the title character is young. Carl young as Dennis
Starting point is 00:51:31 the Menace. Young the menace. Ah, you know what your dreams are saying. You know what your problem is? The collective unconscious. Don't tell me about that stuff during, while my prize begonias are being judged, because it's still Mr. Wilson. Anyway, so Harold Wilson, the former prime minister.
Starting point is 00:51:47 So, guys, I think we have our list. I think at the top, we've probably got Apollo 13, right? Apollo 13 or the right. No, we're 2001. I'm going to put 2001 at the top. I mean, my only argument about 2001 is like a better movie, but If we are, if it's a combo platter, now that we have our 10 of like what's most astronauting, what's best, it's a little less astronauty.
Starting point is 00:52:06 Well, are we judging by most astronauti or by greatest? I'm going to say, let's say most astronauty. Okay, what's the most astronaut in the movies? Then probably the right stuff or Apollo 13. Yeah, I would say Apollo 13. It's a story of astronauts being in space. Yeah, solving problems. It's not like the right stuff where they're fighter pilots for most of the movie.
Starting point is 00:52:24 Yeah. It's not like First Man where a lot of it is about him being a, cold fish, you know. They're astronauts from the jump in Apollo 13. So Paul 13, then right stuff, got to be on there. 2001, I'm putting pretty high up, you know, even if it's not as astronauty. Then what do you put after that? I would say either maybe like gravity or the Martian?
Starting point is 00:52:47 I don't know. What do you just think? I mean, on pure fucking astronaut terms, gravity is more astronauty than 2001. Yeah. I guess so. There's fewer scenes of apes. That's true. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:53:01 2001, they start out as apes and then they become astronauts. I understood the movie, right? Like the apes, they shave the apes? They do a morph. Yeah. When the ape throws his bone into the sky.
Starting point is 00:53:11 We forgot space chimps, guys. Oh, boy. How could we forget that? The whole list out. Oh, man. Everything's on balance now. Oh, boy. What about Jason X?
Starting point is 00:53:22 They're astronauts. They are astronauts. I don't know if I'd call it an astronaut movie necessarily, you know? There's more characters than Jason characters. That's true. That's true.
Starting point is 00:53:32 When you're looking at character density and proportion, there are more astronauts in the movie than there are slasher's. Also, David Cronenberg is in it. But the knife is more dense than the astronauts, which is why he can slice it through that? That's true. Now, is Lepricon in space an astronaut movie? Is that an astronaut movie?
Starting point is 00:53:48 Yes. There's astronauts in it. Yeah. Yeah. So are there any movies you want to bump off this list to put Jason X or Asper or No, no, it's fine. We've already committed. Okay.
Starting point is 00:53:57 Then I think you got down a little bit, you got like the Martian and Interstellar and those are good. You got first man in there. And then probably silent running, sunshine. I'm putting a little closer to the bottom just because it's not that astronauty. And space buddies. Space buddies. I mean, it has to do with space history, I guess, about like the early dog astronaut explorers. That's true.
Starting point is 00:54:21 As much as I would prefer. A happier ending, I assume. And honorable mention, of course, space cowboys, which is kind of like the flip side to a lot of things. because it's about astronaut. They're like, oh, only, we have no astronauts left. We only have the oldest astronauts. Were there guys who were supposed to go into space?
Starting point is 00:54:36 I'm trying to remember that movie. Were they guys who were supposed to go into space? I don't know. You know about space buddies? No, not space. Because those dogs were probably... Why do they go into space? Those cowboys?
Starting point is 00:54:46 They're fixing a satellite. They're former test pilots. Oh, because they're the only ones who still know how to do this stuff or something? I guess so. I haven't seen it long. I remember seeing it in the theaters in the year 2000.
Starting point is 00:54:57 I thought that was fine. Something they're like, they're like old guy, know how. Yeah, yeah. Something like that. The tech is too old. Because you know the people,
Starting point is 00:55:06 that's what it is. It's like an old Soviet satellite or something. And they're the only ones who know how to fix it because everyone else is just using their, their MacBooks. Yeah, smartphones. I mean,
Starting point is 00:55:16 it's the year 2000. So no. They didn't have smart phones. They didn't have that. They had those Apple computers with the colors on them, you know. Oh, cool. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:55:22 Yeah. So we've got our list of the greatest most astronauty movies ever made to be honest, guys, I thought we were going to have more filler on that list. But we came up with more astronaut movies. All killer. It's all killer, baby. Losing Space Buddies.
Starting point is 00:55:35 Yeah. I mean, that was. Find a lie. I feel like Space Buddy is snuck on there. That was the loophole one. They're so cute. There's nothing in the rule book that says a dog movie can't be on the astronauts. So in case anyone's wondering, the official canon, flop house list of best astronaut movies.
Starting point is 00:55:53 You got Apollo 13, the right stuff, 2001 of Space Odyssey. then, you know what, didn't make it on. Actually, hold on, guys, before I would say it, Dan, Space Buddy is made on there, but Space Camp did it. How do you feel about that? Oh, wow. No, no, I let Space Camp go, you know, and that's fine. Because they are at best trainees.
Starting point is 00:56:16 They are, they went to a fantasy camp. But what if their fantasy becomes real? I mean, one of them is an astronaut, I believe, who goes back up with them. I haven't seen that movie since I was a child, so I don't really remember. What about Meatballs 2 where there's an alien? No, that's an alien on Earth. Then E.T. would be an astronaut movie because technically he's a space traveler.
Starting point is 00:56:37 He's not an astronaut movie. No, no. So you heard me say the list earlier. I don't need to say it again. We got it. We got it. And no one cares anyway. This has been a flop house mini. Thank you so much for wasting your time with us today.
