Starting point is 00:00:00 It's the Flop House Movie Minute. Hey everyone and welcome to a Flop House Movie Minute. I know that we said that we weren't going to do many of these anymore, but you know occasionally. We can't stop ourselves tonight. Yeah, we can't stop. We're bursting. We're on fire. And the subject that has us on fire is the best picture in nominees.
Starting point is 00:00:24 You're almost like a has us on fire is the best picture nominees. You're almost like a Dan on fire Starting Dan Zell washing Dan And Dan Daning Dredged by Danny Datt Okay, so was it Tony Scott film? Yes, okay. There we go Danny Dott. It was like all yellow Every Tony Scott movie is like oh like Dan. I know. Yeah yellow every Tony Scott movies like
Starting point is 00:00:44 or like Dan no yeah or plunkett and McLean not a Tony Scott movie who is that? there's another Scott I thought really Scott probably no no the other one Scott paper towels
Starting point is 00:01:00 what were we talking about? the best picture nowadays this is the year they expanded it no longer just five nominees for best picture. How many ten nominees? No kidding they doubled it. That's a fuckload of movies twice as many and you know why they more nominees and you know what they did it tons of good movies are gonna be there well here's the thing okay flashback When they first announced this my reaction was to warm nights almost left behind Yes, so case of memories night so almost left behind. Yes.
Starting point is 00:01:23 So case of memories. My reaction was great. So they can nominate five more crappy movies, because this was a crappy year for movies. Great. They're going to waste it. Because the reason is so that five more movies can call themselves best picture nominees
Starting point is 00:01:37 and then make more money off of that. Yeah. More DVD boxes say best picture nominee. Exactly. Now. Or a blue ray desk. Or a blue ray desk. I'm still calling best picture nominee. Exactly. Now. Or a blue ray desk. Or a blue ray desk. I'm still calling it DVDs. Or PSP downloads.
Starting point is 00:01:50 Still calling it, well that, I don't know. PSP downloads. Still calling blue ray's DVDs. I'm still going to call on that. Flash forward to now, the best picture nominees, it's our. 2000 and 10. 2000. The year is 2010. Washington DC is a smoking crater. the best picture nominees it's our two thousand ten thousand ten washington dc is a smoking crater after the attack by the martians
Starting point is 00:02:12 what a read more than by my screenplay it's been two thousand ten the year that was now but i thought they expanded ten nominees and I felt like I don't know what you guys opinion on I felt like they did a pretty good job of using those extra slots to recognize movies that would not have been recognized other than the one side which I admit I'm not seeing well here's the thing if there were only five nominees here the movies that would have been nominated okay and then I will laugh and discuss when you name these five. The blind side. I have been seen.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Up in the air, avatar, the hurtlocker, and precious. Those would have been the five nine-year picture picture. You really think those would have been the five? Yes. You're not just, you, see, I would go with the people who were nominated for best director and assume that those would have been the, uh, most of those were nine-year, well, avatar,
Starting point is 00:03:03 the hurtlocker. I'm saying, but like, if there were just five, I would end up in the air the hermit and i'm saying that like if there were just five i would end up in the air right yes but i'm saying if there were just five it i would get yes that there was a lot of it doesn't always happen that's the thing but the and but the thing is instead in addition to those kind of middle of the road movies you had movies like
Starting point is 00:03:22 uh... district nine was District 9 was nominated, Up was nominated, In Glorious Bastards, A Serious Man, and an Education were the other five movies, if I'm remembering correctly. And the fact that A Serious Man, which is a difficult movie in a lot of ways, but I think is a great film,
Starting point is 00:03:38 Got nominated is a good sign. That In Glorious Bastards, which is awesome, got nominated, that up, which literally was the best movie of the year, got nominated, is great. Yeah. And the fact that... In District 9, a movie where lots of dudes get hit by lightning bolts and explode. Yeah. The fact that the... Of the movies that nominated now means out of 10 best-patient nominees, two are about aliens.
Starting point is 00:04:00 One is a cartoon. And there are a couple of movies that are period movies but are not and one is basically a cartoon about not see when is the one is in glorious passage which is an insane movie and which is a brilliant movie in a lot of ways but is insane and fits does not really fit well into and that and two movies in education a serious man which are period films but are not costume period films they're not Elizabeth which I recently saw for the first time I was going to disappoint it in better yeah no I actually think that this is a fine thing that they've gone like
Starting point is 00:04:35 it's unlike the people in the in the it's a good life episode of the Twilight Zone it's a fine thing you've done no no it's good that you expanded the category for 10 nominees. Please don't wish me into the cornfield. Now, I guess that was just the short story. That wasn't really in the, anyway. No, it's in the cornfield isn't in the show. So, no, but I think it was good. Like, people who are objecting to this, like me,
Starting point is 00:05:03 are tend to be the people who are like, Sarah Smouts. They've got like this weird, uh. Oh, well, enough of the jargon doctor. Enough of the technical talk, Professor. They've got this weird conservative streak, but there's like a wrong-headed conservative streak because they don't realize that it wasn't always five nominees.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Yeah, and they, I mean, originally, there were no limits on nominees for any of the characters, really. If I remember incorrectly. History is actually on the side of having more nominees, if they want to have more nominees. So to argue against it, I'm like, oh man, I can't believe they're making this change. It's gonna make really a change.
Starting point is 00:05:40 It's gonna make a change for the last hard of the years. It is gonna make Oscar guessing harder. Yeah. It used to be Oscar. Yes, I heard yeah, it used to be The movie that made the most money or the movie that made the least money Was gonna be best picture okay now who knows? It's anybody's game. I still think Avatar will win because it made the most money, but who knows and it has the most blue aliens Yes, that's usual. I, that's on the blue alien meter. And the most how Tony Tails stuck in animal and going back in the old days, that's how they judged the best picture was by blue aliens. Yeah, as the most blue butts in it, there
Starting point is 00:06:16 are blue butts. Don't spoil it for a little reason. Yeah, am I doing a podcast with like a couple of six year olds? He said butts weird. Oh, in your defense there, you should have called him out. But there's a lot of butts in that movie. But I thought this was going to work out the way that it did when multiplexes were first introduced, where they said, if we have 10 screens, then the little movies won't get pushed out of the theaters. We can show like blockbusters on a couple screens, and when the rest of the screens will be the smaller movies in the blockbusters will pay for those.
Starting point is 00:06:49 But instead what happened was they were like we can make a shit load more money if we show transformers on five screens and we show G.I. Joe on the other five screens you know instead of showing a little movie so I figured that would happen. The people have already seen transformers. They have G.I. G.A. Exactly. So they've already seen the revenge of the fallen.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Now they want to see the rise of Cobra. Yeah, they've had enough of falling. Time for rising. And they will not be disappointed by that movie at all. And after they see both of those movies, they go and see sideways. Eh? Eh? Steward? I don't see why they would enjoy sideways. I mean, it's significantly slower and the rise is more of a slice of life. I mean, there is a car crash. I think there's a dude's wing in it. Sideways. There is a dude's wing at one point. I mean, a man does get hit in the face with a motorcycle helmet though.
Starting point is 00:07:35 Yeah, I mean, I guess that's pretty cool. Yeah. To sum up, sideways was great. So I will say to the academy, I still don't like you. I'm going to say that I pretty cool yeah. To sum up sideways was great. So I will say to the academy I still don't like you. I'm too sure. Kudos for doing something I agree with to a point. Good work Mr. Academy. I still I don't know what the I haven't seen the blindside either so I don't know what the hubbub is about it. Everybody loves the blindside. Is somebody blind blinded it it's about uh it's a deal there's a there's a African-American football player
Starting point is 00:08:11 who was this science fiction who was interrupted by a Christian Southern family and turned into a sports phenom from what I understand like the hit TV show phenom of the same name with Judith Light. So, and Sandra Bullock is in it. It seems like- It seems like- But nobody's blind. No, I think that's a football term.
Starting point is 00:08:35 It's a football term. But so maybe that movie will win. But just the fact that they nominated some more stranger films or difficult films I think is a nice sign for the future. Yeah, totally. And then they'll give them the award to like whatever kind of bland middle of the road thing. Yeah. It gets the votes. Gladiator too. Rise of. The Forest Gump battles Gladiator. See, well that sounds like a great movie though.
Starting point is 00:09:01 I've always wanted them to do sequel mashups like that. I've been trying to get Terminator 5, short circuit three off the ground for a while. And of course, the dream would be Rocky 7, Rambo 5. That'd be totally crazy. Yeah. Would it take place in a boxing ring? Boxing ring, but the boxing ring would be in Southeast Asia or Africa or something.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Or war or something. Yeah. It'll be in Zanadu. It would be in Southeast Asia or Africa or something. Yeah. Yeah. It'll be in Zanadu. It would be in Zanadu somewhere deep in Samuel Coleridge's dreaming mind. The perfect way to start a Rocky Rambo movie would be Samuel Coleridge taking a puff of his open pipe and then the camera zooms in to his eye as the pupil widens and suddenly we're in a war-torn valley where Rocky Bobo is fighting a match.
Starting point is 00:09:48 And then at the very end of the film, right, like the climax where Rocky's about to like punch the guy, all of a sudden Samuel Courage gets a knock at the door. He's a woken. And we never know what happened. And the door is the members of Rush showed up there. He had to be an interesting twist. Alright, I think... Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha the movie starts I would love that I think I don't know rocky for Rambo 7 wait I make it looks like a Rambo for a rock no rocky 7 Rambo 4 yeah Rambo 5 I don't know what our title would be but I know the poster would say Zanette So just sum up guys, the Oscars. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Nice work. Have a nice day.
