Starting point is 00:00:00 On everybody, happy Saturday for the long weekend. I will be your host today, Alex. And I'm saluting you because if you're anything like we are, then that means that holiday weekends and things like that are only days that you just work and don't get bothered by anyone else. So if that is you, then I salute you. We're in the same boat. But I had something that came on mind this morning. And I feel like content has been on like the vein of my thought process recently. And so I wanted to share something with you. Um, yesterday I talked about, um, whether making content for you specifically, what types of content and what is kind of the best use of your time. Um, but today I want to talk about how to consume content. And, um, I think it's, it's just off, just as if not more valuable, um, of a skill to know how to consume content. Because right now, there's so much information that's out there. Like, you could literally consume content all day, every single day. And so, um, having the skill of being able to pick up a book and then being okay with putting it down, I think is incredibly, valuable because it preserves the one asset that you have, which is your time and your attention,
Starting point is 00:01:03 right? And so you are truly spending it. And so being a wise spender of your time and attention is it like if there's ever a skill to know how to master, that is the one, right? Because what you put your time and attention to is what will come into you. And so guarding yourself for that. Now, so what I wanted to talk to you today is not just about the importance of that. Because I've like, hopefully that that should be clear to you, like that's really important to your return on your time. because you only have so much of it and being able to say no to a lot of things. But there's a ton of influencers out there. There's a ton of business people.
Starting point is 00:01:36 There's a ton of gurus, whatever, right? And how do you know which ones to listen to? And this is sort of like an easy guide for anyone who follows lots of different people. And one of the key things to understand is context, right? And so one of the things that happens, and I find myself doing this, is that I talk about the things that are on my mind about my business in any given time period. But the reality is that a lot of times, a lot of influencers, a lot of gurus will talk about what's on their mind for their business. But if their business is a million dollar business, a $10 million business, a $50 million
Starting point is 00:02:15 business, a $100 million business, the things that are relevant, the skills, the deficits, the bottlenecks that they're experiencing are really not relevant to the majority of the marketplace, right? Because if I were to raise, like, if I were to ask everyone on here to raise, raise your hands and you were like in like in front of me right now it's like who here is a small business owner who has less than three employees right or is just self-employed um most people would be raising their hands if you go to a conference like you know 10x or you know click funnels or anything like that a lot of these types of conferences most of the people there are just beginning uh have have yet to begin
Starting point is 00:02:49 or just beginning which is why like when you see the content around like um like find your passion and the things like that, like get motivated. All that is really towards seekers. It's towards people who are entrepreneurs. Like, that might make you feel good, but it's not going to be a huge ROI in your time unless you really feel like you're not motivated, right? And so that's probably like the mass market.
Starting point is 00:03:12 That's the biggest chunk, right? And there's some big influencers there. But like what they're talking about is not going to give you huge ROI. So then maybe like right after that, you're like, okay, well, if I'm an operator or sorry, like I'm an owner operator and I'm self-employed still, then should I listen to all the things about, you know, running teams. Well, if you don't have a team, I'm just being honest with you, like a lot of the stuff
Starting point is 00:03:36 about like culture and internal training and onboarding team members and things like that is just like you just catch yourself consuming it and be like, is this really relevant for me? Right. It's like where I'm at in my business. Because if you're new or if you've taken the first step and you are like, let's say your personal training right now, you're actually full time or you've already started your gym and it's just you, like, you need to learn how to market and sell, period. Like, that's all of your attention should be on learning how to market and sell,
Starting point is 00:04:03 because that's the only thing that's going to feed you. Like, running the team, culture, motivate, like, that stuff's all done now. Like, you've, you've leveled up, right? Like, this is what you need to focus on. Hey, guys, real quick, if you're new to the podcast, I have a book on Amazon. It's called $100 million offers at over $8,000 five-star reviews and it has almost a perfect score. You can get it for $0.99 on Kindle.
Starting point is 00:04:25 The reason I bring it up is that I put over 1,000 hours in the writing that book. And it's my biggest gift to our community. So it's my very shameless way of trying to get you to like me more and ultimately make more dollars to that later on in your business career. I can potentially partner with you. So that's my give. Go check it out. Amazon and back to the show. Now, once you know how to sell, selling is going to be the first skill that you acquire. I think it's easier of a skill than marketing is. It's also less valuable. Because selling, you can get a lot of people to plug in for sales. If you learn how to market, you learn how to make it rain, right? much more valuable.
Starting point is 00:05:00 So that's something that's a skill that can take you a lot further, right? Now, what's more valuable than marketing, right? Once you leveled up from like motivation first, okay, now you're motivated and you start. Now you learn how to sell, right? Because that's how you actually make money. People give it to you and you actually have to take it. That's actually what sales is. After that, you have marketing because now you find out how to make more sales by bringing people in and generating interest.
Starting point is 00:05:24 After that, that's when leadership and running the team become the skills. sets that you need. So if you're listening or you're watching content on a regular basis, listen to it through those filters. If you're like, this is not a skill set that I need right now, it can still be really inspiring and really interesting. And I'm saying this because I spent tons of time early on in my like gym, gym business career, whatever you want to call it, listening to things that I was like, that's really cool. That's really important. But it never actually applied to how my business was working at that time. And so like if you only have X amount of time or attention under your control, then invest 100% of the laser focus and be okay with
Starting point is 00:06:02 closing books. Be okay with closing books. Be okay with pausing a video because if you're like me, it killed me for a long time to stop things. So it's like, no, I'm a finisher. Like, if I start a video, I'm going to finish it because that's like that was the mindset I had. I'm like I'm not a quitter. But it's not like that. That's not how it works. That's not how information works. Some people don't have good content. Some people make one nugget and take a really long time to talk about it. Right. I try as hard as I can to keep as concise as possible. But like, that's the point. point, right? And so, like, by all means, like, if you're watching this and you're like, man, I'm not getting any more value from it, pause it, stop it. Go find something that's more relevant.
Starting point is 00:06:33 But, like, hopefully this gives you a lens to see all, like, to see or listen to all of the other content that you have coming at you. It's like, is Gary V. someone I want to still follow? I don't know, unless you're just looking at what he's doing for content. But if you're not making content, what does it matter, right? If you, if you're looking at Grant Cardone, that's awesome. But is he really giving you things? If all he's talking about is how to invest your money and you're like, I'm broke, probably not a very good use of your time, right? So look like, go consume from a pipe the only things that you need in your current situation. If you're in the beginning at sales, next it's marketing. Next, it's going
Starting point is 00:07:11 to be teamwork and leadership to build a team that scales. So hope you guys are having a happy weekend. This was just on my mind because Layla and I were talking about content. And I was like, you know what? I talked about making content yesterday, but I should probably talk about consuming it. And so this is the other side of the coin. So if you feel good about cutting things out and going on a low information diet that only is about one specific skill, which is what I would recommend. Just FYI in terms of how I consume content, what I'll usually do is I'll bookmark a bunch of things on one topic. And then I'll binge. I'll binge sales stuff.
Starting point is 00:07:43 I'll binge marketing stuff, especially if I'm creating any training around something or I'm like, how can I optimize this process? I'll read two or three books in a few days and then have all the ideas kind of spinning in my head. and then create something. And it tends to work a lot better than kind of passive consumption while you're on the toilet. So, thanks, Jeff. Appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:08:03 Randy, lots of love, man. And I hope you guys have an amazing weekend. Enjoy the, what we call it? The interruption-free workday. It's every day's a workday. Saturdays and centers are just work days without meetings. So anyways, have an awesome day, guys. And I will catch you soon.
Starting point is 00:08:21 Have an amazing for the July.
