Starting point is 00:00:00 Right now, if you're a gym owner or you're in an industry that was affected by COVID, shit sucks. Welcome to the game where we talk about how to get more customers, how to make more per customer, and how to keep them longer, and the many failures and lessons we have learned along the way. I hope you enjoy and subscribe. Hey, what's going to everyone? Just wanted to make this video for or slash podcast, you're consuming it. Just I feel like it needed to be said. So right now, if you're a gym owner or you're in an industry that was affected by COVID, shit sucks, right?
Starting point is 00:00:37 I just want to be really real with you. Like, shit sucks. Like, it's not easy. And if you're, you know, in the gym space and you kind of have two choices, right? You've got your lease that you personally guaranteed. You've got equipment. You've got employees that are relying on you. and it's half the market doesn't want to come into your gym because they're afraid of,
Starting point is 00:00:59 you know, the flu, right? And on the flip side, you're trying to make money online, but it's an entirely new business. And so any new business would require 100% of your attention, except you also have this other business that you're personally guaranteed on that is also puttering by at 50% capacity. And it's very, very difficult to acquire customers, right? That's just reality, right? That just is what it is right now. And if you've heard any of the podcasts I've ever made, it's all about focusing on one thing. But how do you focus on one thing when you've got something that you're personally guaranteed on one side and you've got something on the other side that requires 100% of your attention and you have to learn all new skills, onboard new employees,
Starting point is 00:01:39 deal with an entirely new fulfillment structure, new fulfillment system, new acquisition process, right? Like, how do you do that? You just try your fucking best, right? You just try your best. there's there's really no I have no section like really great answer I can tell you that the people that are succeeding are going in overdrive you know they're working 16 hours a day they're working weekends and they're doing it to try and get enough of a leg up enough of an advantage enough of a head start in one of those games so that they can let the other game go and I was talking to a really good friend of mine who's a really really prominent life coach and she said something that I've really liked and I thought I share with you, which is it's much less about the habits that we're trying to make and far more
Starting point is 00:02:24 about the person that we want to be. And whenever you have to switch your identity, there's always an element of risk because you have to sacrifice something old in order for the new to exist. And so for many of us, there's an identity, there's belief sets, there's belief patterns that we have associated that we've been walking in for a long period of time. And we have to make the decision of who we want to be, right? What story will we tell about these hard times? At first, we thought it was going to be a week or two weeks or three weeks or a month or two months or three months. And now it's what? Two quarters, three quarters a year.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Right? Like, at the end of the day, we can only deal with, like, we have the cards that are dealt to us. And we can only play the hand we've got. And so I'm just making this because like, shit's hard for us too. You know what I mean? It's incredibly emotionally draining to see, you know what I mean? Like seeing gyms go out of business. business left and right. And some people are going out because they can make it and they turn the
Starting point is 00:03:22 corner online. And some guys are going out because they just can't turn the corner fast enough and they only have 30 days of cash. Right. And like I said, it's reality. And I wish I could I could wave a magic wand and give everybody, you know, 90 days of cash like you did when you started your gym. Right? You probably had some sort of preparation. But you didn't have preparation for starting an entire new, you know, online business and you got it within seven days. And you still had bills and you still had rent and you still had employees and you still had payroll and you still had everything else those associated maybe you got the loan from the government maybe you didn't right but what the fuck you're gonna do right you just got to play the card you know got to play the cards
Starting point is 00:04:01 we're dealt hey guys real quick if you're new to the podcast i have a book on amazon called 100 million offers that over 8000 five-star reviews and it has almost a perfect score you can get it for 99 cents on kindle the reason i bring it up is that i put over a thousand hours into writing that book and it's my biggest gift to our community. So it's my very shameless way of trying to get you to like me more and ultimately make more dollars to that later on in your business career. I can potentially partner with you. So that's my give. Go check it out. Amazon and back to the show. And so I'm just saying this because like if it feels hard, it's the game. You know what I mean? And the game can't be one, only played. And so maybe your chapter changes. Maybe the story changes for you in terms of
Starting point is 00:04:49 the industry you're in. Maybe maybe your entire. business model changes. Maybe you go from group to one-on-one. Maybe you go from group to semi-private. Maybe you go from group to online. Maybe you go from a big facility to one-on-one, right? You got to play the strengths that you've got. If you know that you're good in this setting, then play your strengths. Because right now, that's what you've got. Those are the cards you have. Those are the ones that you have in the pocket, right? And the cards that are dealt on the table are for everyone. All right. But the thing is, is that the one nice equalizer is that everyone was dealt the same hand, right? Everyone in our industry, anybody in Brook and Mortar Service,
Starting point is 00:05:20 specifically, you know, in health and wellness was dealt the same hand. And so there are people winning. And so if you have the belief that if that fucker can do it, so can I, you will be able to push through it, right? And I'm only saying this because that's what I have to tell myself, right? And I'm just saying it's hard, right? It's hard. Like I hear the, I hear the customer support calls, right? I hear the people who are like, well, how am I going to pay my rent for my house and pay this and pay for marketing? And the honest answer is, I don't know, right? We try and put as many tools as we possibly can. We give paid and full plays. We give cash plays. We give zero ad spend plays so you can do outreach. But at the end of the day, at some point, you're going to probably
Starting point is 00:06:00 have to go into overdrive. You're going to probably have to do an asymmetric amount of effort to make up for a deficiency that the market played. We all got, you know, flop 2-7, offsuit, right, for anybody who's into poker. You got the worst hand that you can be dealt. And so you got to just play it, right? And that means that you've got to make up for it in other ways. You got to make up for it and the strengths you've got. If you're good on one-on-one, then do one-on-one. If you're good at high-ticket, do a high-ticket. If you're good at the marketing side, do the marketing side.
Starting point is 00:06:26 But what you can't do is just quit. You just can't give up because the game keeps going. And the only thing that we have to do is get through the chapter because the page will turn. Eventually, they will decide that it is okay for us to be in business, that it's okay for us to do what we're supposed to do. But I'm just saying, like, I'm half giving this mention to myself as much as I am for you, which is like the only thing. thing we can do is just try to do it like try just this hard tomorrow right um and i'm just saying this
Starting point is 00:06:55 because i saw a couple you know i've had a couple individual messages and a couple conversations that were around this topic and i just don't have a sexy answer like i could tell you that when i would like when i first opened my first gym like i contemplated why i even felt like being alive right i had so much pressure i couldn't breathe i couldn't sleep even though i was exhausted because i was so stressed and it made no sense because I was like, how the fuck can I be so tired? And I'm too tired to fall asleep right now because I have so much adrenaline and cortisol in my system because I've been amped up all day and drank so many caffeine drinks so I could at least look like I was paying attention so I could look like I was building rapport on my sales
Starting point is 00:07:31 calls today. Right? And so like if you're going through that, I'm just saying like, you're not alone. We're all going through it in our own flavor. But just play the cards that you've got. Play your strengths. Take advances on cash. So if you have opportunities,
Starting point is 00:07:46 to get someone who has cash for any kind of discount. You can front load some of those. Give future discounts. That's okay because right now you're going to be betting on the fact. Like, you are rolling a dice, but we're betting on the fact that in six months, things will be better. And I think that's a bet that I'm willing to make.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Right. And so if you can get that cash to get you through this, if you can do some paid and fools, if you can work with some clients to advance on a year, right? As long as you're still committed to playing the game and committed to fulfilling the promises that you make them, which you should be,
Starting point is 00:08:15 then I'm, I think that, Those are the types of small moves that you're going to have to make during this period of time. But we're all going to be on overdrive. So if you feel like you're on overdrive and you're exhausted, you just got to keep going, right? And I'm right there with you. You know, everyone at gym launch, like we try and remove every obstacle we possibly can. I can't change the government.
Starting point is 00:08:36 I can't change what they allow us to do. But we can just fucking try hard. And so that's what we've got. So anyways, lots of love to everybody. Hope you guys are having a good week. If you're struggling, connect with other people. I can tell you there's always strengthening communities and connect with others.
Starting point is 00:08:54 You'll be able to get through this together. All right. Not in the fucking COVID way. Fuck that. All right. But I'm saying that we can get through this together as small business owners because we can band together
Starting point is 00:09:02 because we're better than all this shit. So anyways, lots of guys. As always, rooting for you. Catch you guys soon. Bye.
