This week on the Glass Cannon Podcast, the party turns toward its objective.
The entrance to the second level.
But the rescued orcs remain in hiding.
We have a responsibility to those that we rescued.
Yeah, but...
Otherwise they'll just be slaughtered.
They'll be slaughtered either way.
Not necessarily.
The heroes must decide whether to save them.
Medra, I just don't see it. I don't see the plan.
There's no plan to get them out alive.
There's no possible way unless you can teleport 30-some orcs.
It's not going to happen.
Or move forward.
So you can sign them as a fate of slavery?
Unless something else forces their hand.
You get the sense that you're not alone.
You feel like you're being watched.
You just feel like there are eyes on you.
The adventure continues.
Run!
Blow the ceiling!
No. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.
But here at GCP Headquarters, you always feel like a nut. sometimes you don't. But here at GCP headquarters, you always feel like a nut.
Isn't that right, Joe?
You always feel kind of crazy, Sean.
I feel kind of crazy.
It's like a bag of mixed nuts.
I think you and I haven't slept enough.
I'm crying right now because I'm laughing at the failed take that started this intro.
I don't know if you're going to bring that up.
I can't help.
I have tears streaming down my face.
What's going on, everybody?
Welcome back to the Glass Cannon Podcast.
This is episode 218 coming up, I think.
I have no idea because it has been a crazy week leading up to this release, and we're
on the verge of another insane week.
I mean, Joe, how are we doing this?
It is, well, it's Gen Con week
It's Gen Con week
It's Gen Con week
That's why we're strung a little too tight
We are spread a little too thin
Last week we did what?
You said it, I think
One of the things we recorded was
We recorded over nine hours of content together
Right, but I think we did more than that
I think you're talking about each show being one hour,
but some of the shows are an hour and a half, if not more.
Yeah, most of them were, yeah.
So, yeah, we recorded a ton of shows
because we had to pack it all in before we all leave town for Gen Con.
Our office, we're sitting in the office.
It has looked through the week like a hurricane.
Like our windows were open during a hurricane.
It's pretty much what it looks like.
It's terrible.
It's terrible.
Like I don't even want to be here sometimes
because it's such a mess.
It gives me angst.
Well, you know what else it combined?
Combined it.
Look at this.
Look what's happening to us.
You know what else it combines with
is not only all the recordings and Gen Con
and getting the new merch ready to ship out to Gen Con,
but also our new design of Patreon t-shirts went out for
the first time this summer.
Yes.
And those were all getting boxed and shipped this week.
And so they were all over the place.
Very fun shirt.
We got a lot of people saying they're loving them.
So thank you guys that have joined in at the $25 tier on our Patreon to get those shirts.
So excited to see those finally go out.
Yes.
to get those shirts so excited to see those finally go out yes uh if you haven't seen them they're the uh it says a16 ocean view uh in the miami vice logo uh on a tahiti blue shirt
and we want to make sure that uh our uh awesome subscribers got that before gen con so that we
can see and i quote i quote myself a sea of tahiti blue In Indianapolis I love it
What else we got going on?
I mean
Well we're headed off to Gen Con
So lots to do there
Last week was like
Getting all the recording done
This week is just getting
Everything else done
We got a lot of new merch
Coming out
And we've had some
Big announcements
One of which being
Finally
The Glass Cannon sound set
Is ready
For Sirenscape
That's right
The Sirenscape Which we first started Talking about with Ben Loom's two years ago.
Two years ago, yeah.
You know, we have finally put together, we've got the artwork, we've got the audio, we've
got the different options for you.
There's multiple sound sets.
You can buy them in a bundle.
You can buy them individually.
It's really neat the way it's getting all set up.
And supposedly, if everything goes well, it'll be live at Gen Con.
Yeah, pretty exciting. That's on my to-do list today, setting that up in the store and not getting all set up. And supposedly, if everything goes well, it'll be live at Gen Con. Yeah, pretty exciting.
That's on my to-do list today, setting that up in the store and not screwing it up.
Good luck with that.
I'm sure that'll be easy.
But check that out.
We're going to have three different sound sets that you can buy,
or you can just get all three for a single price.
Also, we started putting up pictures this weekend of the new glass cannon dice sets which are dropping
on our first show this thursday uh august 1st 2019 at hi-fi glass cannon live they're only
going to be available there and then whatever's left over will be available on saturday's show
and then if anything is left over after that,
it'll be put in the merch store.
But we have four different dice sets.
We have a green, a red, a blue, and a black.
And then we're going to be selling individual D20s as well
in all of those colors.
Yeah, these are all gorgeous.
By the way, I'm getting my hands all over Matthew's dice.
He doesn't know.
He doesn't even know.
Rub it on your armpits.
These are this gorgeous blue, Adela Blue, as Matthew is calling it, with a GCP on the 20.
Oh, there's a 12.
That's all right.
Double digis for old Joe O'Brien.
Yeah, I was rolling the green on our last two Silent Tide streams.
If you guys haven't checked those out, we played Silent Tide, the first ever Pathfinder Society scenario.
We converted it.
We, Eric Mona, converted it to second edition.
And then I made some changes myself.
We played it on Twitch for the past two weeks.
And now it's going to hit YouTube.
Anyways, and the audio is also available for our Patreon subscribers.
I was rolling the D20 for that whole stream.
And I mean, did I roll less than a 16?
It was crazy crazy the amount of
natural 20s was absurd yeah and it's great because when you roll a natural 20 or a six on a d6
it's got the uh gcp logo so love it i don't know joe you don't think we're gonna sell out i think
we are i don't think i didn't say that i i said that it's definitely possible but what's good to
know is if you can't be in indianapolis if these things go in Indianapolis, we will be ordering more.
Absolutely.
There's no worries about that.
This is one of those things that is not going to be limited time only.
But we can't even tell what the gap will be when we get them back in.
So hopefully they do sell that.
I don't know.
We'll see.
We'll see.
You tend to be pessimistic.
I tend to be optimistic.
Right.
Right.
I tend to look at things as like, what's the worst case scenario?
Will we have enough money to pay ourselves?
And I'm a dreamer.
I'm a dreamer.
I can't help myself.
We got two Glass Cannon live shows coming out this week, as I just mentioned.
Holy shit, man.
Yeah.
I'm excited.
How are you feeling?
Are you ready?
I'm never ready until like an hour after the show.
Then I feel like, yeah, all right, now I could do it.
Now I can have a good time.
Uh, no, I mean, you know, my process, I work all the way up until, uh, we walk out on stage.
So I, you know, I don't know how I feel.
I think this is going to be an interesting challenge, uh, that I'm excited about.
And I was excited about when we first decided to do two shows is that whatever happens on Thursday,
I then have to go back into my little writing room on Friday
and prepare a show for Saturday
based on what happens Thursday.
So I'm interested to see how that's going to work.
And it's a new setup for us
with some of the audience standing and some sitting.
I feel like it's going to be a real rock show.
It's a true rock show.
I mean, that's what that place is for.
So we'll see if we can turn it into a hell of a time.
I'm excited to finish up our work today, finish up our work tomorrow, hop on that plane on Wednesday and get back to Gen Con.
It's been too long.
We made the mistake of having children last year.
What fools.
What fools.
We have too much to do.
Too much to do.
This is it.
This is the end of the intro.
Enjoy episode 218.
And hopefully we will see you in indianapolis
matthew and joe have you ever heard the expression secrets don't make friends
you say it all the time say it all the time i have no idea what you're talking well i couldn't
help but notice the two of you whispering to each other as we were getting
silenced before we started recording.
Do you care to share with the rest of the class what you were talking about?
Sure.
QuickBooks has a new feature.
Matthew, shut up.
What else?
I think you're just paranoid, Troy.
What's the new feature?
It is a new way to submit your receipts so the quickbooks can
categorize them and you just have to match them after everything comes in i see so you just have
to you can just sort them into accounts once you have the receipt that way all of you children who
don't know how to fucking keep a slip of paper in your pocket when you get a little drunk i am
phenomenal at it uh let me ask you this so as we're starting to record Rather than getting in the zone
Looking up your spells
You're looking at QuickBooks
He's got every one of his spells memorized
He doesn't have any questions
If I walk over there right now
What's on his computer screen, Joe?
Oh my god
Matthew, close that window
Roll 20
No, there's no way roll 20 is open
Are you sitting here doing accounting
While we're recording episodes?
He's keeping receipts for all the spells that he casts.
And QuickBooks.
For all the material components?
Yeah.
IRS, man.
If you get audited, you're fucked, man.
I expect to be reimbursed for these.
If you don't have all those moth wings, if you can't go to every, if you don't have a receipt for every single one of those fucking moth wings. I do have a shoe.
I do have a shoe materials.
Yeah.
I was going to say, if you didn't have a shoe materials, if I just waited till the end of
the year and be like, Matthew, can I see receipts for all those spells?
I've been, uh, what's the, what's the material?
Where's the fox tongue?
For a hungry.
Where are the crickets legs?
Hungry pit.
That must have something cool.
Let's see.
I mean, is that what you guys were you cast last year?
Yeah.
Now hold on a minute.
It's your shovel costing 10 gold pieces.
Yeah.
Hold on a second. A miniature shovel costing 10 gold pieces. Yeah, hold on a second.
Let me see that.
I think that a shoe materials only frees you from things that are under a gold.
Right.
Under one gold piece.
Is it really costing?
Yeah.
You can't eschew a miniature shovel.
Yeah.
You can't eschew.
That costs the equivalent of $100.
That's why with like scryingrying like the the the mirror you need
that mirror yeah a miniature shovel i thought you were bullshitting me that's actually real
you can cast any spell with a material opponent costing one gold piece or less without needing
that component so we will begin this episode i owe 20 gold pieces uh that giant still being alive
because it couldn't go into the hungry pit there was never over initiative there was never a hungry
pit that never happened and there was another hungry pit. There was never. Roll for initiative. There was never a hungry pit. Wow. That never happened.
And there was another hungry pit that was huge.
That never happened.
Way to slip one past the guards, Capitacasa.
Didn't I tell you all that I have a necklace of miniature shovels that each worth 10 gold
degrees?
You mentioned that to me once, but I forgot.
In my defense about the QuickBooks thing, I don't judge your warmups.
If I get jazzed, you know, know doing our books you get your jollies
doing books i'd say that that's a crunch in the numbers uh well good for you matthew
now you're a busy guy you got a multitask over there between skipping out on miniature shovels
balancing the books.
What did you say, Skid?
Or was it Grant?
He's like, you've been cooking the QuickBooks?
Yeah.
Cooking the QuickBooks.
That's good.
All right.
Well, what a domination. What a domination of that encounter.
Yeah.
I thought after the first one at the front Fort Cullis that it was only going to be, that it was never going to be that encounter. Yeah, I thought after the first one at the front Fort Cullis that it was only
going to be, that it was never
going to be that dominant. And it seems
like it's only been more and more dominant
with consecutive encounters. It's like we're gelling as a team.
Yeah, this team is working
really well together. Yeah, and Thune didn't
involve himself at all. It's not like, oh, well, you're
playing with five against, you know, three.
Of course you're going to do well. I mean, again,
Jimmer was the only one to take any damage, right?
And it was just one big hit.
One big 40-plus hit, I think.
Juicy.
But for you to go and get that surprise round,
it's just a really cool use of your arsenal and teamwork
in a way that, correct me if I'm wrong,
any makeup of this party since episode one has never really gelled in the way that you correct me if I'm wrong, any makeup of this party since episode one
has never really gelled in the way that you're gelling now.
Why do you think that is?
Is it just because you've learned from your mistakes?
Is it just that this particular party makeup works well together?
I wonder why.
Yeah, that's why.
Yeah?
Yeah.
It's because we have fighter, rogue, ranger, wizard, basically. You know what I mean? A ranged fighter, yeah. You're a ranger uh well wizard basically you know what i mean a range fighter yeah you're
a ranger you're you're a wisdom based cast divine caster with powerful ranged attacks yeah and the
ability to track and sneak and all that kind of stuff it's just a very basic core class makeup
you're like the fucking x-men these days like Like everyone is like Iceman is making a guy slip and then someone else is flying over
and it's really something.
If we've had Cyclops as Baron, if we've had Colossus as Jimmer, if we've had Psylocke
or Jean Grey as Metra or Storm or Storm and then Wolverine, it's like you've been struggling.
I was going to say Nightcrawler.
You've been struggling with your powers for so long.
It's like when Wolverine has all the adamantine taken off of his body.
Yeah.
But now you finally got it back in the last combat.
Well, that's the thing.
You were doing some damage.
That's the thing.
I feel like a Dalgrath has been kind of like a burden because he's not doing anything
but the thing with rogues is that they have to be in a in the perfect place at the perfect time but
then they can if the roles go right just do massive damage output and uh don't forget he also
is now look baron is amazing at this it could also do it obviously metric could as well but just the
rogue is good to have that sneak up get the eye of the whole room
sneak back like that's a huge part of that whole combat is getting all the intel uh in advance
and obviously metric can do that but it's great to save those invisibility spells for the combat
as opposed to the recon you know i haven't read a lot of wolverine books but is there a whole
storyline where he holds his action delays his action action, and goes total defense? Yeah, in the 80s.
Okay.
Zolbert never has gone total defense.
That's early.
Early Wolf.
When Dazzler was a character, you know, in the disco days.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah.
No, there was a whole John Byrne arc where Wolverine just stood there doing nothing.
It was awesome.
Then, yes, you're Wolverine.
Yeah.
Okay.
I have Wolverine.
The John Byrne Wolverine.
I still have Wolverine 50, I think.
It's like it's got the claw marks on the cover that cause it like a hole, I think, and you
open it up and you can see on the inside.
Used to be into comics.
That's a cool cover.
What else?
Did you look it up?
Yeah.
It's a cool cover, right?
Yeah.
Things you remember.
Well, we'll see you next week.
well we'll see you next week well no I'm it's it's a it's a a testament I think both to you guys uh gelling as a team
and coming to you into your own at high level play yeah we still make mistakes but I think
I'm certainly not pulling any punches I'm I don't think I'm even giving you the benefit of the doubt
maybe I seem more lenient than usual, but I've set up ground rules.
You're playing by those ground rules and you're dominating.
Yeah.
But for how long?
Until we rest again.
You open the doors.
Oh, no.
Oh, my God.
I completely forgot this.
You open the doors.
That sound came from Jory's mouth.
I know.
There's a better one on Sirenscape.
I like to let him do this thing.
It's like my daughter.
I'm like, that was good.
That was really good.
I do my door sound.
Door.
Door.
That's what it sounds like.
A strange door.
You don't see any creatures.
However, you see another door up ahead.
But before that door, you see a side tunnel in the wall that curves around and up to like pass overhead from where you are.
Oh, the entrance to the second level.
With one word written in giant above it that says barracks.
Oh.
Oh, so the barracks are up a level.
So, okay. The barracks appear to curve up and around the area where you're in.
You don't know how big or how large.
You don't know that.
But then there's another door up ahead that leads.
Who knows where.
And does that door in front of it have shaky stonework, or does it look solid?
The door looks solid.
Baron, you up there as well?
Absolutely.
I remember you crushed your stone cutting.
41.
Was it 41?
Or 40.
I need to know these.
42.
40.
43, I think.
By the way, the disabled device on that door was DC 40.
Not 35.
I think you were like, oh, it's 35.
No, it's 40.
A lot easier with a key.
You see, Baron, that collapsing that weak spot would not only
seal off the level
that you guys are coming from, from the
upper levels, but would also
collapse the side tunnel
leading to the barracks.
Sealing off the barracks
from the rest of the compound
entirely. Was it Thun
that intimated, or I can't
remember if it was Thune or not but it
would seal off the barracks from both getting to the lower levels and whatever is on this door
on the other side of this door which may very well be the upper levels however it's clear that doing
so would make any progress from this lower level and whatever's beyond those doors impossible so
perhaps the best thing to do would be to check out what's beyond those doors
invisibly or stealthily, and then get back, collapse the whole thing.
Blow the tunnel and then teleport out.
Well, we've got to deal with the slaves, too.
Well, we can't.
We can escort them to one of the possible exits that...
But we can't go back to the slaves right sure that what we're saying
no I'm saying we I
study the location and then we go
back collapse everything and next
day we can teleport directly there
but is that enough
okay that's what I'm suggesting
that way we can help these rescued
slaves
fuck those orcs
I agree.
Fuck them.
He's been around them for days.
He knows.
They're unbearable.
Awful creatures.
All right.
So you're saying examine this area, walk back out, collapse it with us on the lower side.
Yeah.
And then teleport back into the upper side.
I like it.
Yeah. I see teleport back into the upper side. I like it. Yeah, I see.
I think we should also
check out those other rooms.
We've got a death wish, Sheriff.
We've got one mission,
get to the top.
Well, let's...
How do we want to...
Let's establish our anchor point
for tomorrow first.
Yeah, let's do that first.
If we have to get into a fight in there, we have to collapse the tunnel and do all kinds of stuff.
All right.
Hmm.
Right.
Should we check out what's beyond this door?
That's what we're saying.
Yes.
All right.
Yes.
I'll take a step up and give it a go.
I'll do a perception check on the door.
Okay.
Just checking for traps. I assume
it's not, but 31.
31.
Doesn't appear to be trapped.
Okay.
Then I will...
I'm talking
like Thun.
Then I will... Two Thuns, get out of here.
I will try to open it stealthily
so basically seeing if it's even locked.
So very slowly going
to pull on the door handle.
Okay. So roll a stealth?
Yeah, roll a stealth.
32. 32?
Okay.
Pull on the handle. It doesn't appear to be
locked.
You stealthily open it Yep I'll keep going
Clink
As you open it
And the door cracks open
You get this whiff of
Fresh air
Oh
Much fresher air
Than the shit smell
That you've had to endure
It probably feels The fortitude saves Throughout the entire First level that you've had to endure. It probably feels...
The fortitude saves throughout the entire
first level that you've been going through.
So it's as if these two
doors are acting as an airlock
from whatever's beyond.
Wow. Okay, cool.
That probably feels so good. Yeah, yeah.
Oh my god. Deep breath
outside air.
Alright, I'll continue Deep breath. Outside air. All right.
It'll continue opening the door.
Okay.
Door.
You continue opening the door.
That one was Sirenscape.
That's Sirenscape, everyone.
Come on, Ben Looms.
Step up your game a little bit.
And you just see a winding tunnel leading.
Pitching up.
Up.
All right, Maitre, I think this is your place.
Examine it.
So would we reasonably assume that just beyond that door would be safe from the collapse?
Baron looking at it, and you're like, yeah, just beyond that would be pretty safe.
Give me a few minutes.
just beyond that would be pretty safe.
Give me a few minutes.
And Metro will just kind of sit down on the steps and study the walls, the floor, the ceiling, inch by inch.
Carefully.
Taking some notes, sketching a little bit.
Yeah, little sketches.
A little sketch so she can study it some more later.
Happy little clouds.
Yeah, so you're looking at it
and there are no distinguishing features of the tunnel
whatsoever however you're spending time and you're looking the best you're ever going to get out of
it is viewed once what's the uh what's the uh the missed chance on a viewed once it's like 96 or 97
it's still pretty high i don't think it's 90 or anything i could be wrong viewed once on target 1 to 76 that's
not good wow i uh i misspoke but yeah 77 to 88 off target right which isn't couldn't may not be
terrible 89 to 96 similar area 97 100 mishap how do you feel about uh and i'll tell you this i'm not just being a
stickler this is straight out of the book you can't because they assume that everyone at this
point has some means of teleportation you just imagine that like you're studying this and like
this looks like every other tunnel we've come through there's nothing discerning about it i
take some chalk and i draw some little markings along the floor.
I was thinking the same thing.
See?
I was thinking about adding like magical glyphs, you know, the warding marks.
Oh, yeah, yeah, that too.
Yeah, you could.
Does that affect it at all?
If we somehow mark the tunnel?
That's interesting.
I really like that idea.
Surely.
I was kind of joking.
It would bump it up to at least seen casually, which is 12 more
points.
Yeah, because
the difference between viewed once and seen casually
is significant.
Yeah, you're
not sure. Okay.
Let's add them to be safe. Do you have the
wording marks or the glyphs or whatever
they're called? Arcane mark? No, I don't.
You don't have arcane mark. I don't you don't have arcane mark i don't either hmm dela did hmm who oh no what a dick no i loved her she was my little
deputy um well we could either roll the dice we could roll the dice on that or move on and see
if we could get something more recognizable to the outside maybe but that might be a long ways away well this also might be a better way to
provide us with a better means of extricating the slaves if we still want to do that too if
there is fresh air this way maybe there's an exit that we can escort them through i mean
baron's happy to go forward let's roll d100 just see what happens just see like what would happen
if we did the teleport oh you're ruining next time we would be alright
so you'll probably always be
hurt yeah that roll
made no sense
I'm angry you for
taking it just do a hundred rolls
like that and then we'll get a clearer picture
oh you just did it
97 I'm sorry I just rolled
an 89 where would that have us
that would be bad bad kill us all
we'll see you next week
all right so
a little bit keep moving along
I do love for sure can we can we go
into I'm sorry this is well we want to
be on the other side as that doors open the
stink is starting to waft its way
where do we
see where the open air is or we just
feel the breeze? You just know
that the other side of these two
doors does not have
the stink of all the
dung farms and the livestock.
Let's all get on the other... Let's close the door.
Okay. Close the door behind us
and then continue on.
Dalgraith
going ahead, stealthing ahead just to kind
of examine what is up
the next 20 feet, 40
feet, 80 feet, just sort
of getting a sense of not
only the area, but if there's a place
to duck and hide, if there's a place
maybe even, this is crazy,
but to rest.
Wouldn't that be amazing? That would be incredible.
That would be great. Save all those spell slots
to not have to teleport back and forth.
Roll a stealth check.
37.
37.
You're able to creep along for a little ways.
The tunnel is turning and winding,
but you know from the elevation of the ground that it's going up, up.
You're ascending another level.
At a certain point, if you turn back and look,
they're already, like, lower than you, so it's getting steep.
And you see that the room opens up, up ahead, into another area.
I was just thinking about when we were in Lake Placid
and we did that little hike,
like walking up that little hill
and then it pitched up pretty good
and you had Archer on a thing
on your stomach.
You just looked at him
and you went,
I'm going to take him home for a nap.
He literally,
in the middle of the trail,
turned around and went home.
Yeah, it took a long way back.
I was like, all right,
well, enjoy the summit.
That was brutal uh okay see the trailhead casually i'll teleport back oh there it is um i'm sorry so where do i what do i see you see the room open up
and is it dark?
Is it light?
Dim light?
Well lit?
Is there any sunlight anywhere?
I feel that fresh air, but it's just coming through dark tunnels.
No sunlight.
Complete darkness.
But you, with your dark vision, can see that the room is opening up into another large area.
He'll start in slowly, just trying to be confident in that fire giants don't have dark vision.
I'll roll perception just to see if I pick up anything out of the ordinary before I continue on.
Natural 20.
36.
Natural 20 on the perception?
That's an important perception.
That is.
It's pretty big.
How far do you move up?
Do you move up to the opening of the room?
Well, I see the opening of the room. You're about 40 feet away from the opening of the room.
Well, I can see 60 feet.
So 20 feet into the room from this angle, do I see anything fishy?
You don't see any creatures.
All right, I'll creep up.
You want another stealth check?
Yeah, at this point, give me another stealth check.
Natural 20, 42.
Natural 20, all right.
So you're super, super stealthy.
Now roll a perception check.
Oh, damn it.
27.
You're very stealthy.
But you get the sense that you're not alone.
Oh.
You feel like you're being watched,
even though you have no earthly idea how you could be,
because you felt like so confident in the way you moved to the opening of this room.
But you just feel like there are eyes on you.
And what do I see?
Just bare, open, wide-ass cavern with no features?
Yeah, you're right up to the edge now.
I guess I can tell you what you see.
You see a rectangular room that looks like it's separated
into north and south areas
by a row of angled spikes in the floor pointing south in the direction from which you're coming.
Defending positions.
And you're, you can see how far?
60 feet, right?
I want to make sure I give you as much as you can.
Okay.
You see a portcullis. We'll let you as much as you can. Okay. You see a portculis.
We'll let you keep doing it. I love it.
Portculis. It's like our own thing.
Portcully.
On the other side
of the room
that is closed
into the west and
east walls
that have closed wooden doors.
Choke point.
Ambush point.
With tire spikes.
But I have an eerie feeling.
And the longer you stand there.
I'm going to back out, slowly back out.
His spidey senses are going off.
He's going to slowly back down, trying to not make a sound,
keeping his eyes open back and forth, back and forth,
waiting for something to come at him out of the dark
with that feeling.
Okay.
And as you're backing off, you just see something
skitter past the tunnel,
like right near the opening.
So wait, I back down.
I get through the opening.
And right where I just crossed.
And I can't identify what it was by
Was it bipedal?
Was it quadruped?
Quadruped.
Quadruped.
Shadowrat.
Run!
They're back!
Blow the ceiling!
Storm Tyrant is just a one-jump shot.
They're back!
This summer.
This summer.
Wah!
I feel good!
I love it.
He's going to come back, you know, relate all of this to the group.
I don't want to go up there again.
Something saw me, even in the darkness,
and I couldn't see to go up there again. Something saw me, even in the darkness,
and I couldn't see a damn thing burn.
I think our best option is to try to teleport out of this place. If you want to tend to the orc slaves before we leave Metra,
you can do it yourself.
You let us know if that's what you'd like to do,
but otherwise I think to save the rest of the small folk around Galarian,
we need to head out.
What about where Thun suggested that they kept livestock,
the open areas, the areas he suggested might have been like areas of escape.
Could we see if maybe there's a way we can get to one of those and lead the lead the slaves there but if
you remember part of that problem was you would have to cast the spell that would let them get
down the side of the mountain more times than there were slaves i think was that part of what
you said no no i was if we can get to that open area. Or, you know, we could also rest down in the mushroom pit.
Oh, and if we...
Yeah.
If we seal off the barracks.
Yeah.
Right, but there were multiple entrances to that room.
We don't know who else could be patrolling from other angles.
Weren't there little, like, quarters on the south of the mushroom room?
Yeah, but there were multiple... and correct me if I'm wrong,
but I think there were multiple entrances in and out.
We just picked one, went through it, and it led to this whole thing.
Well, because Thun pointed us in that direction,
but there were multiple other exits.
Could we ask Thun if he thinks there would be a safe area
for either us to rest or the slaves to hide
if we were to isolate the lower level
from the upper level?
It is not impossible.
However, once you destroy this ceiling,
there is a chance the giants will be on high alert.
Now, obviously, cutting off the barracks
would cut down on the number of reinforcements they'll have,
but it's only a matter of time before they dig themselves out.
Yeah, I was about to say,
the more time we spend after we blow the ceiling,
the more time we give them to be able to extricate themselves.
There's also a good chance that there are patrols roaming this level
that you just have been fortunate enough not to run into to avoid.
I don't like it, Metroid. I don't like it, Metroid.
I don't like it either.
I don't know how we can do it all.
We have a responsibility
to those that we rescued.
Yeah, but...
Otherwise they'll just be slaughtered.
They'll be slaughtered either way.
Not necessarily.
If we let them go on their own to try to escape out
the tunnels of the livestock, they'll be caught and captured.
Whether by the fire giants in here or by the giant cramps outside, they're weak.
They can't move fast.
They can't fight back.
What are the particulars of the spell you put them in?
They're going to go into a shadow dimension if we don't get them soon enough?
Yeah.
I believe, is that yeah is that what
that where they get ejected there's like a 50 50 chance that they're like lost in the shadow plane
or they get ejected out into the because it basically it has to be an area of pitch darkness
i think or if there's no dim light it goes away it's one of the one or the other it's near the
end of the spell description it's pretty cool. Jim, what do you think?
What would you do with these slaves if it was up to you?
Well, I have
no strong feelings either way.
I don't care about the green skins.
I can say the thing
I'm worried about. If it's important to Metra, then I'll help her
do it. But,
you know, I got no
love for them or
hatred in my heart.
They can open the door.
That's the other thing.
So actually, we told them they can leave if they need to,
but it's only if the door is closed.
If the entrance is sealed, is closed when the spell expires,
there's a 50% chance that creatures in it
are ejected into the shadow plane
instead of the location of the entrance.
But they could just open the door.
I think they're visible by any giants passing by
there's at least as much chance that they can speak to any other fire giants who might roll
up in there and say that we killed them and they can go back on to harvesting mushrooms but
if we don't stop so you can sign them to a fate of slavery? Until we stop their hierarchy,
yeah. We save
these people. We put them in danger.
We have a responsibility.
I thought you were the law, Sheriff. I am the
law, but the law needs to
The law needs
to topple hierarchies before
any real change can be made.
That's so true. That's law 101.
First year of law school,
that's the first thing you learn
is to fight the power.
Double hierarchy.
No, but Baron really doesn't feel like
if they spend any more time in bondage,
it's unfortunate,
but their overall fate won't change
unless we can, you know,
beat who's in charge of this place.
Metro, I just don't see it.
I don't see the plan.
There's no plan to get them out alive.
There's no possible way unless you can teleport 30-some orcs.
It's not going to happen.
So they keep their heads down.
As you said, Sheriff, we consign them to an unfortunate extended stay in bondage,
but then if we take out their leaders, we come back and we can take care of them.
And maybe the giants that are patrolling
will not
kill them all. They think they still have this
pool of slave
labor that they can rely on.
It keeps them alive until we complete our mission.
I ache for that kind of
naive worldview.
They're dead the minute
we leave them.
Your daughter was left
in an uncompromised situation
for a very long time
until I came along with my
companions and let her
free.
I believe in the strength
I believe in
Sorry, my phone is updating.
It's been a terrible purchase.
A terrible purchase.
It's on sale.
I was just tracing it last week.
Honeymoon's over, huh?
A piece of shit, huh?
$1,700 down the drain.
I wonder why it was $300 off.
Gotta get rid of these pieces of shit.
Not recommended for podcasters.
Wait, what?
Fine print said broken.
It says it's... I need to pay another $200 to use Twitter?
Oh, no.
Oh, God, man.
That was a catch.
I wish more phones came out with that feature.
Go ahead, Buzz.
Basically, Barron's point is, your daughter had the strength to wait until she was found,
until the opportune moment was for her to be free and she
changed the world. And I
believe that the same fate
can await these ill-begotten
orcs. If only
we do the right thing
and reach the pinnacle
of this
dead volcano.
You know very little about my daughter then.
And you're suggesting that we leave those people to die and go take a little bit of her rest.
Will you be able to enjoy that nap, knowing that everyone you've left behind will be slaughtered?
Everyone I know in that orc camp will be left behind and slaughtered?
Everyone I know in that orc camp would be left behind and slaughtered.
I would mourn their loss, but I would rejoice at the fact, if we succeed in our mission,
that the rest of this world would be able to survive after we defeat these vile creatures.
So yes, in terms of moral equivalency, I believe that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.
And though there are 30 there,
there are hundreds of thousands,
if not a number I cannot count to
because I am but a simple dwarf.
Millions.
Out there.
Anyways, so it's point.
Dwarves are known for their lack of count.
Dwarves can't count to a million.
I'm going to have to disagree with you there, sir.
One, two, three.
I'm going to do it right now.
I'm a simple dwarf.
I don't care if every snake dies.
I've come to a million before I make another move.
And I think that's enough time.
Two, three.
That's enough time for all of us to rest
while he gets to a million
yeah I'll get none of my abilities back
as I stayed up all night counting
super relaxing for the rest of us
but yeah that's
Baron's position
if it's important to Metro I know
her a little bit better I think
do you have
it's not so black or white.
It's not if we leave them behind and go forward, they die.
It's not if we go back, they live.
It's not that.
If we go back, they could die.
If we go forward, they could live.
You're making these jumps to conclusions as if they're already dead if we walk away.
It's not the truth.
Come on.
Made a promise, though.
What do you suggest we do to save them?
We must find a safe place to ensconce them.
Until such time as we can return.
Well...
The safest place to ensconce them is in the room they're in right now!
You could take them out of the shadow room and tell them to act as if we left them behind.
They're just the slaves waiting in the mushroom patch.
It's the safest place as any.
Hiding in plain sight.
I will say that I think that they were, while mistreated and perhaps malnourished,
they were not killed doing the job they were doing.
However, I suggest a compromise between Dalgrith and Jimmer's position.
I suggest we investigate the doors to the south we have
yet to open.
Don't
laugh at me. There is a reason.
Wasn't that your position?
Certainly, but
I let it go. I let that
position go until you
mentioned finding
a point of respite for them.
And perhaps there's a point of respite within those doors.
So Baron is suggesting
that we open those doors
to see if we can find a place for them to rest there.
Thun,
what do you believe is behind those doors?
I do not know,
but they resemble
many of the doors that lead to giant quarters.
Whether or not they are occupied, we'll have to find out on our own.
If they're not occupied now, they're going to be occupied within the next eight hours.
Hmm.
That's reasonable.
I mean, I have no magical means of saving them at this point.
Well, then if you have no means of saving them at this point
There's nothing we can do for them
We can defend them
We can stay here rest among them
That's insane we have to move forward or we die
There's a
A tidal wave
Of giants waiting to fight us
And if we collapse that cave
It's only a matter of time before they dig
Themselves out we have to move forward to fight us. And if we collapse that cave, it's only a matter of time before they dig themselves out.
We have to move forward.
We gotta rest anyway.
You're right, Jimmer.
You're also right that we made a promise.
But it appears that the sheriff has other plans.
I am your servant, sir.
Do what you will.
The plan is simple, Sheriff.
We go back, we keep our promise,
we pull them out of these shadow planes,
and we tell them how to hide in plain sight.
We give them the instructions of what to say should a fire giant come by,
and tell them to just hold off for another day or two,
and we'll be back once we've killed their leader.
to just hold off for another day or two and we'll be back once
we've killed their leader. I knew
I needed the straight and
simple thinking of a dwarf
to set us on the right path. It's so simple!
We've been wasting all this time. Alright.
While I appreciate
both of your counsel, I think
we should go forward with Dalgrith
and my plan.
Which is to kill them all, right?
Obviously.
Are we collapsing tonight or today
before we leave, or are we going to collapse when we return tomorrow?
I don't think we can know.
We should do it tomorrow, because again,
the longer that we leave it collapsed,
the more time they have to dig themselves out.
We can also find a safer spot to teleport
to in this room. For sure.
What?
Rather than going into the tunnel
that was,
that's specifically designed
to prevent us from teleporting,
we could teleport into,
you know, here.
Could we also put down...
Into where?
We're in the tunnel.
I'm sorry,
where we are.
We're not immediately past the door,
but, you know,
we're still going to have
that same difficult chance
to teleport.
Maybe with those extra doors.
All czar,
if you leave this room as it is,
you will return here and it will be
remanned and perhaps
reinforced. It is a
difficult decision no matter what
you choose. Wow.
Collapse now and
leave them longer
to dig themselves out.
Wait to collapse and all
the bodies you've left in your wake
will be discovered.
That's true.
Let's collapse it on the other side, but I feel like I'm being bullied by Troy.
No, I think it's pretty straightforward.
That's why I want to do this.
It's a very tricky situation.
Well, the idea of the plan is literally run back to the slaves, be like, here's what you got to do,
and then run back and collapse this
tunnel and get out of here because like we can't wait eight hours to collapse the tunnel because
they're going to be coming out of this barracks any minute they can literally be coming out
in the next hour for their shift change or whatever right uh and they'll see all the bodies
and but the orcs just need to know if you want to save the orcs the orcs just need to know come out of the hiding in shadow and hide
in the mushroom patch and just cower in fear and whoever comes by they're not gonna have any
problem with you they're just you just tell them who we are and tell them where we went
right and they can't get to us they could even give them misinformation about no don't have them
lie about anything tell them to tell them the truth so that they can't even see through a lie and they boom they went that way they can't get to us
that it doesn't seem like the slaves were on our side at all or we were helping them at all but
they know that we'll be back once we defeat uh the hierarchy here all right let's do that and
then we gotta smash that tunnel down so like we have like an hour, basically, and we have to do this.
Let's do it.
Hopefully we don't run afoul of any patrols.
Right.
Do you still want to check out these rooms
to the south, Sheriff Thune?
God damn it!
It's always Thune that gets you.
Those rooms are ancillary to our purpose,
so I think we should get moving.
I mean, I can cloak of etherealness, just poke my head in. get moving i mean i can cloak of etherealness just
poke my head in no yeah finally cloak of etherealness it is oh wait a minute why can't
you just cloak of etherealness back to the orcs right through all the walls tell them what to do
and then run back yeah look through those rooms cut off all that time yeah you can yeah you can
do that too i'm not the one who suggests putting themselves in danger. You wish me to
deliver this message?
Are you always difficult no matter what
the question is, Metra?
She likes to keep you on your toes, Sheriff.
I like it. Only when the question is
between consigning a bunch
of former slaves to their demise
or not.
This is jumping to conclusions.
Let's keep moving.
So I'll hand off the cloak of etherealness to one of you
to do it. Dalgrith, if you
are brave and strong and
wise enough to go on this course of action
unlike Maitre, you're welcome to.
No, no, Baron, you got it all wrong.
I'm not brave or strong at all, but you know what?
I do like fun.
And the cloak of etherealness is for
his shit!
So he's going to put on the Cloak of Etherealness.
Can you go into those giant chambers too?
Oh, this is going to be awesome.
Cloak of Etherealness.
Alright, so you've got X amount of minutes?
10 minutes, I believe, or 11 minutes, right?
Something like that? I think it's 10.
That sounds familiar to me.
Do you want to use it to check out these rooms first and then like decide what you want to do he's gonna bolt straight
through the mountain he's gonna bolt so he's gonna go into these two rooms okay which one 10 minutes
uh the one to the right okay you go into the one to the right and it is a smallish chamber, you know, small for a giant, with a sleeping pallet and scraps of food on the floor.
No creatures.
All right.
He'll walk through the wall into the next one.
All right.
So you just walk through the wall and you see another room, same thing, sleeping pallet. Scraps of food on the floor.
Okay.
No creatures.
I'll just do a quick perception.
21.
21.
Yeah, you do see something in the second room.
It's like a ledger.
A ledger.
You can leave after a minute and yell at us.
You can pull out and save the rest of your minutes of the etherealness.
We'll say you burned.
Or just come back.
Tell us later.
A minute.
Well, if I burned a minute, then I'll undo it.
Can you come out of it, grab it, and then go back ethereal?
No, it's in minute increments.
No, I know.
So I already used a minute.
So I'll come out of it. It's just one minute done. Okay. ethereal you know it's a minute increments no i know so i already used a minute yeah so i'll
come out of it it's just one minute done okay and i'll take that ledger open up the door walk back
out and leave the ledger with the team okay say this seems of interest but i don't have time to
look at i'm gonna head back out go for it he disappears again into the ethereal plane and
he's gonna try to take the most direct route through the as the ethereal
flies do you want to use through the walls engineering or survival to try to find your
way back uh dungeoneering i think it's going to be best uh yeah dungeoneering dealer's choice so
uh natural 20 oh that is the tiago yeah i'llago! Oh, that is the Tiago die. I'll tell you what,
it's been rolling rocks. It was certainly
not a gimme to get back there. 27.
Yeah, so obviously
it's a check, but the natural 20.
You just needed a little luck of the
Iberian Peninsula. That's what it was.
That's what I was missing. That's what they say.
That's what they... Luck of the Iberians.
Love it. So you're moving
half through tunnels, half through walls,
making your way back, and you get there,
but the cloak is, it's going to take you longer than nine minutes to get there.
Oh, really?
Yeah, so at a certain point it's going to, moving at top speed,
I would say you get there and then you become visible huh yeah because don't
forget you were moving along it was 10 minutes a pop you were rolling all those fortitude saves
every 10 minutes oh right yeah so i guess it was really far back but moving at top speed you know
running as best you can through walls you can run straight lines basically like he doesn't even have
to run he can go straight through the mountain yeah right yeah so i'm fine with you getting there but then you
all right you appear okay so i'll appear in the mushroom room you appear in the mushroom room
and is it empty uh you see three dead orcs on the ground
but you knew there were 20 something bodies there or 20 something uh orcs on the ground. Oh. But you knew there were 20-something bodies there,
or 20-something orcs that you left hidden in the shadows.
And you stand there and just see three dead orcs.
All right, he's going to look around.
I mean, he knows the positions where the shadow traps were.
What are they called?
Shadow havens.
Are you able to interact with those shadows?
Are you able to see them?
No, they can see me, though.
They can see you.
Right?
And you know where they are.
I know exactly where they are.
Do you say anything?
Shave and haircut.
Yeah.
Two bits.
If you're alive in there, come out.
I won't have time for foolishness.
Come out.
Okay.
Second or two passes.
Ten seconds, twenty seconds.
All of a sudden, two of them appear.
Two orcs?
Yeah, two orcs just come out of the shadows, just emerge.
Now, were those three bodies there when we left?
No.
What happened here?
These three dead ones, what happened?
A patrol came by.
And they came out.
To talk about you.
Oh, I should have known
if I'm a traitor for dogs.
God damn.
Most of them didn't.
You're not here.
I have no voice of reason.
Point taken, but you're not there.
Thank Desna.
What?
I'm not sure it is not there.
I said it.
That's what I said to God.
They were killed on the spot.
Oh, it's too late now.
Plan's gone to shit.
What plan?
What's the plan?
How are we going to get out of here?
Who are going to be next?
You are going to be next, I'm afraid.
There's...
It's not encouraging!
I'm not here to be encouraging. I'm here to tell you
what your options are. You can either stay
here and try to convince
them that you had nothing to do with us, but I think your friends
have pretty much consigned you to death on that one.
There's a path,
I think, to the south that leads
to the livestock tunnels. Might be a way out,
but there's giants on the outside as well.
You said you could free us.
We thought we could, but your friends betrayed us.
And that's why we can't.
He looks around as his voice echoes off the walls.
Keeps his voice down.
They weren't our friends. They were slaves like us.
That still doesn't get us out of the mountain.
It has nothing to do with us.
It wasn't me that needed to control them. It was you that needed to control your own.
That still doesn't
solve the problem
of you keeping your promise to us.
Oh, it doesn't. Keeping my promise to you
is me being here right now. You're lucky I came
back. I'd be happy to leave you for dead.
You pretty much are.
What's your plan? Why'd you
come back if you have nothing to tell us?
I did have something to tell you, but like I said,
your friends botched the plan.
My friends have nothing to do with this.
They have everything to do with it.
They screwed up the idea.
It's just stay here, you play dumb, yeah?
Tell the giants exactly where we are, exactly what we did.
Of course they're going to kill your friends when only three of them come out.
They know the others escaped.
Even your shadowy friend knew this wasn't a permanent solution.
You must have something to tell us, some plan.
What if they hadn't been found
dead here? What were you going to tell us then?
Stay put?
It's a temporary solution. He looks around
breathing heavy. What am I
doing? He starts
sweating from the temples.
He starts sweating from the temples. He's thinking
about Metris. We just need a creative solution
from you, O'Brien.
Oh, God. Oh, God.
I need a dagger.
We're all doomed.
He's just like, he rubs
his forehead, squeezes
his eyes together. He's thinking about
Metra's judgy look.
How much he hates everything he does.
You gotta leave us all for dead here.
Well,
there's one chance.
There's one shot, but you've got to do exactly what I say.
All right.
You can't do anything else.
And I'm telling you, there's not a good chance we're all going to live,
possibly die in the Trium, but there's no other way.
It's death if we stay here, so what have you got?
You're going to have to move, and you're going to have to come with us.
That's all there is to it.
You're going to have to follow us.
We found some tunnels with clean air. On to the outside. We're going to have to come with us. That's all there is to it. You're going to have to follow us. We found some tunnels with clean air.
On to the outside.
We're going to collapse the tunnel, cut the giants off from behind you,
and you can stay there while we move forward.
I don't have any food for you.
I don't have any drink.
But I'll keep you alive and at least safe from the giants
for as long as it takes for them to dig out the hole.
You'll pull us deeper into the mountain with no way out?
It's up to you.
You don't have to take my advice. You can us deeper into the mountain with no way out? It's up to you. You don't have to take my advice.
You could go out through the livestock tunnels
and take your chances climbing down
the outside of the mountain with that giant village on the outside.
I don't like your chances.
I wouldn't like my chances doing it, and I'm a hell of a lot
better at that than you.
We'll take our chances
with the mountain.
Alright, which direction?
This way, to the northeast.
If we get separated, stay low and keep yourself moving.
Every tunnel to the northeast.
And move fast.
We only have about an hour until we blow that tunnel.
And then you'll be left on the other side.
It's going to be like...
What is that?
Is that like the Hunt for Red October?
Is it the Abyss?
It's like people are alive on the other side.
You have to seal the doors.
Titanic is like that too.
Das Boot.
Yeah, Das Boot.
Yeah, it's brutal.
Brutal.
But it's like he's giving them the time frame.
He's giving them the direction.
There's patrols about.
You already saw those patrols.
They probably came through.
Now I'm confident in myself to sneak around,
but I don't know if you'll be able to do it.
I'll give you the best advice I can.
It gives us an advantage. You're not in any armor or weapons.
You'll be silent as long as you try to stay low.
Is anyone too sick to move at all?
We're all weak, but we'll do our best.
All you're giving us is time, but perhaps that's...
that's all we have right now.
All right, you lead the way.
Do we stay close to you?
Stay close to me.
Stay back.
Stay back about 25, 30 feet.
Make sure you can see me.
They'll be able to see me in the dark, so it's not an issue.
They have the dark vision, too.
They have the dark vision, yeah.
They're cursed with the dark vision, so they have dark vision as well,
so they can see me.
And he's just like, oh, this.
Oh, God, Metro, I'm going to curse your name for the rest of my days.
And give me a guilty conscience all of a sudden.
And he'll start making.
This is such a horrible option, but the options are so few.
Are they coming with us, or are they going to scale them up?
No, they're going to scale them up.
We don't know yet.
He doesn't know the end of the plan. But the plan is if he gets them on the other side,
at the very least, the plan is he cuts them off from giant patrols that don't have to
come through us.
I thought Troy said they were going to take their chances.
With the mountain.
Yeah.
He means going deeper into the mountain.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So they're going to come with us past the barracks.
Yeah.
And then park it right in that, like, in that tunnel.
Yeah.
At least there's fresh air.
Right.
At least there's fresh, clean air, and they can wait there.
And then the only giants that can get to them until they dig out have to come past us.
You just have them take as many, like, mushrooms as they can carry for one.
Yeah, yeah.
That's good.
So take a few minutes.
Grab as much forage as you can.
Yes, we should get very high.
Yeah.
This will all be a lot more fun.
We'll all stone to shit. Let's get fucked up. And I'm going to grab as many shrooms and ketamine as you can. Yes, we should get very high. Yeah. This will all be a lot more fun. See, stone to shits get fucked up.
And I'm going to...
Have as many shrooms
and ketamine as you can.
Do you have any aqua?
That is a one-week-old callback.
Great bottle cap.
They're useless.
He's just going to be a tape measure.
That's about the size of a bottle cap to me. It's useless, but it's a nice shape measure.
That's about the size of a bottle cap to me.
It's the heaviest bottle cap I've ever seen.
Oh, God.
I'd like to see the bottle.
Lead the way, dwarf.
Just try to stay quiet.
It better not be a trick.
Oh, please, believe me.
This is the worst thing I've ever done.
All right.
Roll another Dungeoneering check.
Look, I've been through this way.
You have.
But it's a lot of twists and turns.
So it's lower DC this time around.
Oh, God.
14.
Man.
All right. So you start moving north.
Northeast.
Northeasterly.
And then you get to that room that had the Ettons and the Boars.
Fuck.
And you're looking around. Which way do you think you were supposed to go from here? Oh, shit. We didn't kill the Ettons and the Boers. Fuck. And you're looking around.
Which way do you think you were supposed to go from here?
Oh, shit, we didn't kill the Ettons.
Northeast.
Northeast.
All right, and you remember that the tracks in the next sort of fork split off
so that the Ettons moved along.
Some possibly continued on to the barracks.
Actually, you would know that they most likely did
because the tracks kept going in that direction.
Others went down south.
Point of order, though.
He should be able to smell the main poop room.
That was the strongest source.
So he should be able to find that eventually.
Within 100 feet of that, the smell gets a lot sharper.
Does anyone need to use the bathroom?
Now watch yourselves.
It's about to smell like a whole heap of shit.
Because it is a whole heap of shit
You continue moving northwest
You get to the poop room
Nothing in there
And then you eventually get back to the area
Holy shit
All orcs intact
I thought that was going to be an orc mob and dog wreath
Facing down a fire giant
That's what I thought too
I was like how is this going to play
You guys can take off next week's episode.
Yeah, yeah.
That took about
a half an hour
for you to get back
because they weren't moving.
He couldn't move
at the speed
that you could move.
What did we learn
in the ledger
while he was gone?
Meanwhile,
back in the ledger,
it is a book
recording the comings
and goings
of the giants of Ashpeak.
Looks like whoever the lieutenant on duty is,
because it's in a bunch of different handwriting,
but it's pretty clear that it's by one of the officers.
They make notes of not only who passes between what they call the lower farm levels
and another area known as the grinder,
but also the number of giants that currently occupy the barracks,
as well as symbols denoting which tribe each of the giants belongs to
and the command to whom each reports.
Currently, the ledger shows dozens upon dozens upon dozens of giants
of all types staying in the barracks.
How far back does that ledger go?
Updated daily.
It's updated daily.
It looks like this particular one started about three or four weeks ago.
But there could have been another
ledger like this could be the newest book and there could have been another one that they closed
in archives but yeah it was just baron trying to figure out like has this always been a giant place
or like what is the deal he's figuring out the ash peak lineage also what kinds of giants? Is it all fire, stone, eton, hill?
What else have we seen?
Besides the really weird ones.
Stone,
slag.
You do see some recordings
of slag giants, fire giants.
There's a cloud storm.
You don't see cloud and storm.
Are those the only ones that we are aware of right now as heroes from that are like above more powerful yeah that's as far as I know storm and cloud yeah storm and cloud are like the only two there's a great image I think it's in bestiary one of all the giants and you see them like move up inside it's like a police lineup yeah no it's actually lineup. No, it's actually in, I believe it's the Giant Hunters
Handbook. Is it? Oh, I think so.
It's either that or the Giant Slayer
Player Guide, but I think it's the Giant Hunters
Handbook. Huh. It's awesome.
Yeah, it's pretty cool to see. Storm Giants
and Cloud Giants. It's an entirely
other level. A whole different ballgame, yeah.
They make hill giants look like dwarves.
The point of this is
as Metro, if you're the one
Looking over with Baron and Jimmer
Is like
And he's sort of like let's go in and fuck up the barracks
Bad news barracks
Not as bad as walking into the camps
Camping outside of the mountain
I mean that's an obvious suicide but I mean this
Is tantamount to suicide as well
So and collapsing the roof
Is not going to crush the barracks It's just going to seal the collapsing the roof is not going to crush the barracks.
It's just going to seal the barracks off.
It's going to seal the barracks off, which buys you time.
Again, a temporary solution.
A temporary solution, but huge.
Huge, because it seals off reinforcements to the farm level,
which you may no longer have use for.
But it also seals off the reinforcements from coming up to this next level sure and they
might be inclined to dig out to the farm level first just because they know their provisions
provisions and food are there that's where they go that's where they poop i apologize for
potentially conflating feyraza's abilities with metros but feyraza had the ability to create stone
walls that did not dissipate even on their duration.
Does Metra have that ability?
She does not.
Okay.
She can make shadow walls.
Hmm.
Actually, that's true.
That dissipate immediately.
What is...
What school of...
Oh, I know.
I don't have that.
Because I have shadow conjuration and shadow evocation.
So is like a stone shape or a wall of stone a conjuration?
Transmutation.
No, I don't.
Yeah, that makes sense.
You're creating material transmutation.
Yeah, it's also, it's a very, to use second edition parlance,
primal sort of thing.
It's the druid shaping stone.
I hope you guys don't mind me using 2E parlance.
2E parlance.
You wouldn't understand.
I don't understand your ancient language.
Could you speak?
All right, cool.
So we know barracks, no bueno.
No bueno.
No bueno.
What do you want to do now?
You've got 19 orcs.
So at that point, Dalgrath comes in.
Just with an army of orcs just wide-eyed, sweating bullets.
It's just like limping in.
It just puts his two hands up in the air like, this is what it is.
Don't ask questions.
We need to move to the other side and collapse the tunnel.
I'll tell you what happened later.
But these orcs, there's no way they can stay in that room and fake being unaware of what's happening here.
All right, you orcs, you need to keep your mouths quiet.
I know you've done that well so far, but if you want to live and you want to survive, you have to follow my orders.
But first off, you have to...
You sound drunk.
You sound like a drunk man.
First of all, before I move, you do whatever I say.
But I say goes around here, these parts.
You want your money?
Well, come get it,
because I don't know where it is, you baloney.
The point of the story is that
this woman right here is in charge of all y'all,
and he points at Metra.
I put all the orcs on the map, by the way.
Oh, God.
Oh, my God.
That's a lot of orcs.
Oh, man.
Fireball.
It's just ridiculous.
Really, that's the first instinct.
Here's the first plan.
Everyone stand really close.
It's about to get warm.
Close your eyes.
So, no, Baron is really trying to put their caretaking in Metra's hands.
All right.
So are we going to move them beyond?
And is the idea to rest there?
Or are they going to rest by themselves?
Are we going to take this next room out before we rest?
If we don't have any reason to go to the...
Here's the thing.
Collapsing the tunnel could also draw attention from the upper level.
Coming down to see what's the thing. Collapsing the tunnel could also draw attention from the upper level coming down to see what's going on.
So it's dangerous.
Should we do a perception check at the edge of the Northwest Tunnel before we move on?
What?
No.
Why?
We're not exploring new areas right now.
We're in a real tight time frame.
I mean, if you want to do it, we can go do it.
I'm stressed out about all these orcs and collapsing the tunnel.
It's stressful, dude.
It could be like an orc hospice on the other side of that tunnel.
Right, a hospice where you all die in an hour because basically we collapse the tunnel and it's like, see you, and teleport out.
And then the patrol comes down and kills them all, right? Or we rest with them and the patrol comes down and kills us all anyway because we can't fight back as well.
Well.
Slash.
First off, they're going to have to get through 30 orcs before they kill us.
So.
We have a nice little barrier.
Well put.
Well put.
30 unarmed starving orcs.
Wall of orcs.
That's the other thing is like we could teleport to the forge and arm Thun.
Like fully arm Thun.
Yeah, that'd be good.
We could arm the Orcs.
We could.
We could arm the Orcs.
You have muleback cords still, right?
No, I'm wearing four bears.
Cloak of Resistance.
We have the bag of holding.
Yeah, we have the bag.
Show up and just pass out swords.
Yeah, I like that.
Let them defend themselves. But the thing is, we collapse that tunnel, we don't have a lot of time. So do we have the bag. Show up and just pass out swords. Yeah, I like that. Let them defend themselves.
Yeah.
But the thing is, we collapse that tunnel, we don't have a lot of time.
So do we collapse the tunnel?
Oh, wait, you can't teleport twice today, can you?
You have one left?
Do we teleport out and teleport back and then rest?
I have two level five spells left.
Oh, okay.
So what if we teleport out, grab all the stuff, teleport back, back collapse the tunnel and then rest with the
orcs armed and rest here and rest here that way if they if they get if we get surprised on by
patrol like we could rise up and fight as well right and we have all the orcs on our side with
at least with half of them i would say at least with weaponry and armory i like it i think it's
fun i think it's fun there I think it's fun. Cool.
We arm and armor the orcs and Thun, and we have an arm,
we have an emaciated, but an army, an emaciated army,
nonetheless.
Yeah.
And if we rest and bring back also with us some food,
like they could within a day be, you know,
starting to feel better.
I like it.
I think it's fun.
Yeah.
I'm into this.
We collapse then teleport or teleport then collapse teleport teleport to the uh forge forge resize rearm
grab armor from their weapons pilot in as fast as we possibly can teleport back lay everything
out on the ground and go to sleep sleep. I like it. Immediately.
Go to sleep immediately.
Oh, no, I'm sorry.
Then blow the tunnel.
Then go to sleep immediately.
We could sleep at the forge.
How long would you be gone?
I would say an hour.
I mean, being very, very conservative.
So you want to risk the chance that we teleport back there and come across a patrol and have
to fight them and then sleep there?
I think it's unlikely i think if
we have all the orcs on the fresh side of the door with that door shut i don't know i feel like the
barracks might come down well you know they're going to come down and find the bodies anyway
so yeah i mean i think if we collapse the tunnel uh my idea is that the fire types from the second
level will be down there within minutes yeah it. It's possible they won't, but...
Do we have any, based on the ledger,
do we have any inkling of who would be in the quarters,
if anyone would be in the quarters in the next hour?
In this room.
Great question.
Where we found the ledger.
Good question, good question.
No, you don't think anyone would be in in the next hour.
You can see the shift changes.
So let's hide the orcs in the quarters.
In the south.
I like that.
I like that.
Go get weapons.
Come back and execute the plan.
Rest there.
No, no.
We gotta rest with the orcs.
Why?
This is tough, though.
This is tough.
Yeah.
Why?
I think they need
They need our help
They need our help
At our most rested
When we have all of our spells
And capabilities
To help them
So we rest here
We could rest here
And have that rest interrupted
Or we could arrive back
And there could be
A big battle for us to fight
And you would have
No fucking spells left
Well I'll rest
You guys can stay away
But if they come
If they get attacked while we're resting
elsewhere, then they're just wiped out. Yeah, they're all
wasted if we're there, like we have a chance. We can rise up and help
defend them. Yeah, even if we're not at our best.
I'll tell you, Sheriff, I'll tell you why I let this plan
now, because if we can arm these orcs,
we have something
impressive on our side. Could
create quite a distraction. I don't
want to carry around these
useless, fatigued, unarmed orcs
but if we can arm them and we can get them to fight
their way out, I think they could
look, they got no way to go back.
They can only move forward and it's
in their best interest to fight with us.
Baron grabs Dalgrith by his
coif, pulls him close and whispers
Don't you touch my coif.
I just cleaned that coif.
Get your hands off my coif.
Isn't it coif?
Coif.
It's a portulis.
You pull him in.
He looks him straight in the ass and says,
In my earliest days of adventuring when I was defending the town of True Now,
I saw orcs try to assemble,
and I saw them attempt to take over one of the last bastions of freedoms in the hold of Belkson.
I saw them even employ the use of a giant.
But what I saw them fail to do was to coalesce and to fight as one.
I have no faith in these orcs to help us in any meaningful way.
We're arming the starving.
And hungry bones have no means of marching nor fighting.
means of marching nor fighting.
So if you're really putting any faith
in these people
helping us move forward,
I think it's misbegotten.
But, I will
say that with
a new party amongst us
and with such desperate
situations in front of us,
I'm willing to try
anything.
Could you let me go now?
Let me have a quick kiss.
Right at the cliff.
He'll step back.
Actually, that's a pretty intense scene.
You don't need to tell me about
orcs.
I know about orcs.
But there's something about that one.
He kind of nods to the leader.
He is very sexy.
And there's something about the rest of them.
About the ones, Sheriff, the ones who we arm.
The ones who are inclined to betray us.
They're already dead.
You didn't see what I saw down there.
The ones that turned against us
already have, and they were killed
for it by the giants.
The others stayed back.
Though their lives were on the line,
they didn't give us up.
I think this is the right choice.
This group's desperate. They need us.
They can't turn their back on us
at certain death.
And he sighs, and he kicks at the the dirt and he looks back at this group of orcs.
He turns his back to Dalgrith.
And he looks them up and down and he turns back around again.
And he sighs and he spits and he pulls out a bottle of whiskey and he clunks.
spits and he pulls out a bottle of whiskey and he clunks.
And he says, you know, the difference may be that the orcs I'd met before were attempting conquest, but I think there's something even more, there's something more primeval going
on with this group.
They're fighting for survival.
They're not trying to take over a town.
You're right.
Sometimes a caged rat
can be more vicious than a
wild lion.
Let's arm him.
Dalgrith is going to walk up to that leader.
What's your name?
Drummond. Drummond.
Drummond. Drummond
the full-blown orc.
Drummond.
Drummond.
Just call me Mr. Drummond.
What's your first name?
I just go by Mr.
Hey, look, man. The world don't move
to the beat. I just want Drum.
What might be right for you may not be right for some.
My first name's Drummond.
Listen, Mr. Drummond.
Just Drummond.
No, just Drummond.
Listen, just Drummond.
No.
I don't.
It's just Drummond.
Just Drummond.
Drummond.
Drummond.
D-R-U-M-U-N-D.
Oh.
I would pronounce that Drummond. Drummond. Maybe with two Ms? Drummond. Did-R-U-M-U-N-D. Oh. I would pronounce that Drummond.
Drummond.
Maybe with two M's?
Drummond.
Did you forget an M?
No, it's just Drummond.
All right.
All right.
Drummond.
It takes us.
It takes us a bit to trust the orcs.
I think you can see that.
I think it goes both ways, so I don't want to belabor it.
But if we can get you men armed and...
You and your men armed and armored, do you want that?
Do you want to try to fight these giants if they come upon you?
Or do you want to just lay low and try to sneak your own way out?
As far as I can see, those are the only two options.
If you're asking me
I probably have a little fight left in me
but the others
you're not gonna get much
and one of these fire giants comes
bearing down on them
they might cower
I've killed your kind
many of your kind but I would fight beside you against
them. However, I'm just one, and I'm weak in my own right. The rest, I don't think you're
going to get much out of them.
Well, they can only do what they can do, and I'll tell you that there's something to be said for what the mind can do when the body can't quite keep up.
We're going to try to arm you.
As we leave, remember, just like I did, we will come back.
You talk to these men.
You find out who's willing to fight, who's got the strength to wear us at a chain, carry a sword.
And you get them together and get ready.
We're going to arm you.
And hopefully at least sleep out the night.
Cutting these giants off from taking us all out.
All right.
You want us to hide in those doors to the south?
You'll be a bit tight in there, but I think you'll be safer, at least from random patrols for a bit.
Try to bar the doors, keep yourselves hidden until we can come back.
We'll try to make it fast. I hope just about an hour.
All right. Good luck.
Drummond.
Yes?
I can't promise you or your men anything.
Damn it.
Now, Dalgrith, as Baron starts this, is behind Baron, looking at Drummond.
And he's going like this.
He's like, he's doing the drinky, drinky motion.
He's doing the drinky, drinky motion.
And just shaking his head like, just don't, just don't.
He's just bloated.
Let the record show that he was doing the drinky, drinky motion.
Sorry, go ahead.
What do your men like to eat?
What do they like to drink?
I'll try to bring back whatever I can from the stores.
These men and women,
they have only eaten enough to barely keep them
alive. Anything you bring them back,
they would heartily accept.
The giants are only interested in keeping
us at the brink of life.
They control our bodies
and our minds.
We'll bring you back something. Bread bread and water bread and water that would
be wonderful um all right i think that's the plan yeah let's do it so metro metro will not at the
orcs so yeah metronods as we seal off the doors and teleport out.
To the cathedral.
To the cathedral.
All right, roll a... Oh, God.
It's Matthew.
Come on, buddy.
You're very familiar with the cathedral.
20.
20.
On target.
By the way, I studied this area, too.
This area, it won't be viewed once.
I'll give you a study carefully for that area
because it has discerning marks, unlike the tunnels.
All right, you're back.
Thun, you took with you, right?
You were allowed to take Thun with you?
Actually, it's one person for every two levels.
Yeah, so I think you could take four extra, right?
So I think you should be okay.
One additional willing medium or smaller creature
for three caster levels, so I can take four total.
Right.
So Thun can come.
So that works.
Yeah.
Excellent.
Excellent.
So Jimmer, Baron, Dalgrith, Metra,
and Thun.
Oh.
Arrive in the cathedral of Minderhall.
And your plan is to arm Thun,
grab as many scraps of weaponry as possible.
Yeah.
Teleport back to that room
and see what you see.
No,
zoom in.
And arm the,
and arm the orcs and then yeah we're gonna try
to grab like as much mundane weaponry as we can from the forge i mean they've been populating it
there's people there we're gonna be like this stuff you drop all you have we need to take as
much as we can back now we're making an army to take all the giants he's getting all pumped up. The bad giants. Only the bad ones.
Only the bad ones.
And he's going to give Thun, you know, an out here, you know, at this point.
Thun is just like looking around at the cathedral.
A very strange look on his face.
It's very passive.
Wide-eyed, but, like, taking everything in.
Is he attracted to, like, the remaining sense of power that was here?
And, like, you said that he was, like, interested in finding things out and seeking power.
That was his initial reason for coming to Ashpeak was he heard stories of King Tartarian's prowess in battle and zeal.
And so it was like
maybe he was a lost soul that just needed
some strong leadership, wanted
to be a part of something greater.
And being with you
all, maybe he's
found it. And you see that kind of
look in his eyes as well.
Thorn, it's
this is your chance.
You're out.
If you don't want to go back,
I won't hold it against you.
But
this place
and that place,
they're both quite fascinating
and I think that
I, for one,
I'm with him.
And he points to the sheriff as he's doing whatever he's doing.
He's like, I'm not turning back.
But you, you're not obligated.
You do what you need to do.
You've helped us a great deal so far,
so I'll consider your debt paid.
You don't have to go back in if you don't want.
I don't consider myself a religious being, not anymore. However, I do believe
strongly in the idea of fate. And in a way, I believe I was fated to find you, just as you were fated to find me, Thun.
I do not know how long our journey will last together, but I do know it is not over yet, Daldrith.
Not over yet, Daldrith.
That's encouraging to hear.
And, uh... I know anyone who's got the chance to get out at this point
and turns around and goes back in.
Wouldn't make much sense if you, uh,
weren't on the right side of the thing, so...
You've convinced me, that's what I'm saying.
You've convinced me.
Hmm, and, uh... He'll go away go away and, you know, help gathering small weaponry.
As many falchions as possible.
And we should get Boone some armor and arms.
Some good stuff.
Yes, I would love the good stuff.
So I don't know if we want to resize it.
I mean, we could do it off air, but I think that we should go through our entire inventory
and get the most magical stuff that we have.
I mean, it's just...
Just burn in a hole in your handy haversack.
We're also in a floor.
I would assume they may have made some more weapons at some point.
Well, not like high-end magic.
Yeah, but not the high-end stuff.
Maybe a plus one or a plus two, but I mean...
Come on, what a joke.
We want them to be effective.
But there could be enough
to just outfit the orcs
at least.
That's what I mean.
That's what I mean.
Oh yeah,
no,
Troy already said
no doubt about that.
Hand waving matter.
Plenty of stuff,
short surds and whatnot.
Yeah,
chain mail.
So we throw that all
in the bag of holding.
Chain shirts.
Do a quick resize
for Thune
or whatever we decide.
Okay.
And then hop back.
Let me ask you this.
Where are you hopping back?
Are you hopping back to try and squeeze into one of those small rooms?
Or are you hopping back into the large chamber?
If you just, that map is still up, right?
I've already moved on.
There's probably not enough room to cram ourselves in one of the quarters.
So I guess we would have to teleport outside.
Or maybe like right over here where we came up into the room
in the south the southwest
you're gonna want to be in that room
to not have to deal with the
higher chance so yeah up near the
doors but not in them okay
um
great go ahead and roll a d100
I'm interested.
His fingers are shaking.
What Thune is going to be outfitted with.
Eight.
I saw the double zero and was like,
what the fuck, Matthew?
You are on target.
And you all appear at that spot.
You're between the two doors
that each are holding, you know,
almost a dozen orcs each.
A little less now that three
died in that other room.
What do you want to do?
We want to get all the orcs.
The room is empty, right?
The room is empty.
Move fast.
We want to open the two doors and run with all of the orcs
through past the barracks and below the tunnel.
Do you open both doors at the same time?
Do you open one door and usher them out, open the other door?
Oh.
