Last week on the Glass Cannon Podcast
The tree rises.
Oh no.
Roll for initiative.
Oh my god.
A lightning-infused tree guardian
took aim at the party.
It looks like a wriggling, leafless tree
moving on like spidery legs.
The tree demon.
And there are motes of blood-red lightning
dancing through the cracks in its bark.
As the heroes narrowly escape death.
You've killed the creature.
Yeah!
Okay, okay.
Can we please focus on the positive for a second here?
But its destruction newly proved fatal for the sheriff.
When it dies, its remains explode with a blast of lightning into razor sharp splinters of wood.
lightning into razor sharp splinters of wood. All creatures
within 30 feet take
12d6 points of electricity damage
and 12d6 points
of piercing. Oh my god!
Until the last knight of
Highbury took matters into
his own hands. Because in that
moment, charging past,
skewering the creature, and he's
just like, Sheriff! No!
And reaches out
and just closes his eyes.
And as the shards
start flying toward Baron,
he draws them all into himself.
Whoa!
And just...
And just gets knocked
off of Lexington.
The adventure continues.
The Highbury!
The Highbury!
Now. continues now.
That was a close one.
Jesus Christ.
When I get you, Baron, and I'm going to get you,
just want to make sure we do it as right as possible.
And so I was very nervous there towards the end thinking about like,
all right,
this is happening right now.
If he hits him,
it's,
it's a hundred percent going to kill him.
There's nothing he can do about it.
Now.
I didn't know about your ability,
sir.
Well,
that may have changed things. And actually I'm glad I know about that.
Now,
when I attempt to kill Baron later,
I'll make sure you're nowhere near by.
Make sure I'm already unconscious.
Make sure you're already unconscious.
Good luck.
Nowhere's nearby?
Are you a newsie?
What is happening here?
Make sure you're nowhere nearby.
How did you get that spell off, by the way?
It is an immediate action.
What is it called?
It's called Paladin Sacrifice.
Can you take an immediate action the same time you take a swift?
No.
Did you smite evil that round, or was it the no no you can you can when you take an immediate action you
cannot take a swift on your next turn upcoming turn so i would not be able to do what i wanted
to do which is lay on hands on myself now i could lay on hands as a move action but i couldn't or
as a standard maybe but not as a swift uh yeah as a standard anyway this
spell uh i've been thinking about this since last week the different combinations of how shit could
have gone down so this spell is when a creature in the range and the range is close uh but it is
ranged is hit by an attack or fails a saving throw you can cast this spell and the wound and or effects
are magically transmitted to you instead of the target you take it all the you take all the damage
as if you had failed the saving throw or were hit by the attack suffering all the adverse effects
blah blah blah blah uh now sir will was 35 feet away from this creature and the range was 30 feet. If he was within 30 feet,
paragraph two.
If you use this spell against an effect
that also targets you
or includes you in the area, you
suffer the effects for both yourself
and the target you spared,
potentially taking damage or suffering other consequences
twice.
So if I was in the range
and he failed and I failed which by the way
mathematically was likely with what i think you said was a dc 31 i think and reflex save is my
worst save lexington i didn't i would have to choose i didn't even know you were still in like
close within range i didn't even think to have you roll because the way you moved i'm like oh
no he's out of range but yeah you were 35 i'm looking at it right now i was 35 feet just on the other side of the well and if i was in there and
he failed and i failed that would be you know in the area of 180 points of damage that he would
have taken and lexington uh gets his own reflexes would have seen where he would but he might have
died like somebody it could have been really really really bad do you do you do you guys
ever think about like all the times in your life you probably almost died but you're not aware of
like sometimes i play back like all the times like i could have stepped one second off of a
crosswalk later and a truck would have hit me i think about this a lot while i'm biking
that's how i felt after getting a 32 on that reflex save and hearing you say it was a 31 31
just being like holy moly and then
having sir will do this incredible ability on top of it wow so close so even if baron went down
like we had if we hadn't caught the mistake then you still could have enacted that spell
he would have been completely fine you're such you're such he's a cool quick cucumber that's not the word i was gonna use what what you you would have let poor grant suffer just so you could see the
look on his face for the drama of the show matthew you know this is for an audience right a happy
grant is not selling any tickets we sell tickets to this we sell tickets to this podcast
i'll take one please no but yeah it does it does get scary in those higher numbers but here's the
thing you mentioned this creature being cr19 and being on the did i say on the show or did i just
say that afterwards oh did you say it after i think yeah this is this is the single highest
cr creature you've fought in the adventure an encounter i don't think you've had a combo of creatures that have
right come to cr 19 and then we come to find out that we can we can roll a knowledge on because
all we have is baron's knowledge which is like a subsidiary plus five yeah like next if i were to
i should have last level up dumped like 12 points into it so let me give you an idea of how bad this
could have been in episode 300 that fight against the plant creature, that thing summoned the Shambling Mounds.
It could also summon a treant, which I had ready to go.
Had you decided to, like, had it got bad or something in Metro, you, you know, planar shifted into the Hanging Gardens, which I thought you might do.
Like, let me go over there.
You do what Sir Will did, because Sir Will moved right underneath it.
I thought maybe you'd go over there.
Had you done that, I was going to bring the treant into the fight.
And then it's only a matter of time before this thing joins as well.
And so even if you had that plant dragon creature in hand,
now you're fighting a treant, four shambling mounds,
the plant creature on its last legs,
and then this character killer, party killer,
known as a sard, the way yeah it belongs to a race known as the tain i believe oh i love tain that's
a great tim and eric sketch uh no it is well it's a plant that's that's it's john um i could get
into tain but i was just thinking about you know you saying that this was
a character killer and particularly a tpk sort of creature and i was thinking uh that you know
with this specific spell it's it's uh it's remarkable have how having a paladin in that
fight at that moment could probably very well save a life but it might take the paladin's life doing
it you know uh but taking
all of the damage of a death throes from any one character could keep one person alive
which is cool because you could double kill yourself if you're gonna die anyway you could
double kill it doesn't matter be interesting though if that went like one more round and
sir will was really beat up and you knew that like you could save baron but kill yourself
oh it would have been even better i would have preferred it and i would have like
absolutely killed sir will and it would have been the best best fucking paladin death
ever paladins take the most metal parts of old school saints like saints that got like rolled
up on the back of a spiked wheel and rushed for their belief in god and like that is the perfect
way for a paladin to go down it's a dream death for a paladin saving
your ally specifically taking the damage maybe we're spoiling a possible future situation maybe
you know what i got it i also got weirded out when later i was thinking what if he did actually die
you know like the possibilities go through my head and then i remembered early in the episode
i come out and i'm like where's adriel i wonder where adriel is i wonder if i was foreshadowing it and like willing it to happen
oh that's crazy yeah yeah yeah i mean i don't know for me as it happened as i saw it play out
before i realized about all the errors and the other stuff i was like how amazing 300 we go through this whole thing and
then the end of 301 is baron died i was thinking the same thing like i was like did i say everything
i wanted to say how did i get wrapped up the way i wanted to and i was like do you have four more
scenes written on your hard drive you haven't sent out yet man i'll tell you i have a scene
a flashback scene for another piece of equipment i'm going to throw out while we're out here and that is the sapling rod
we're using that sucker up today
yeah the sapling rod
it's been a long time
this fertile ground that grew this awful sard
this tame
this tainted
world we live in
yeah
I was excited about this fight
I kind of was hoping this would have been
the 300 fight but i didn't know where you guys would end up um but it lived up to the hype lived
up to the hype i was going to call a whirlwind in on metra and nester had this gotten a little bit
further along just to take them out of the fight doesn't do a ton of damage but
ranged nester can't do anything really and then uh metro
would have had to step out of it if you wanted to like cast and you would probably failed your
save and just got spun up in the cyclone uh and then just focus in my focus my attacks on baron
and uh what's your name sir will you would have probably felt why would he like save isn't it yeah she's got like a plus 28 yeah yeah but you're shitty
you haven't killed me yet that's true she's got a tattoo for everything though yeah that's true
bust out your tornado re-roll tattoo and then i got excited that like if nesta killed it that
sir will and baron would have got caught in the death throes oh yeah i knew it wasn't a killer
so i was hoping he'd yeah anyways good fight good fight uh sir will uh don't forget to take another uh 10 points of damage uh
i didn't say uh during the episode there because when you hit it you hit it with a metal weapon
there that killed it ah yes and i rolled uh the old jolter as we call yeah. Yeah. As they say. As they say. Ten points.
And that is that. That is that.
That is Giant Slayer, everyone.
Thank you for listening to our show.
Hope you've enjoyed every episode or most.
And we will see you soon.
Okay.
What do you guys want to do?
Heal myself.
Yeah, me too.
Sir Will is healing up.
And me.
All right.
We'll do it off air and get everybody
healed and then we'll keep moving okay so where do you want to where would you like to keep moving
yeah do we want to is there can we just explore the grounds out here thoroughly yeah there's got
to be something nice out here this is the toughest creature we've fought it's got to be
yeah have some kind of insurance policy or something so will will
waft ira metal detector along the ground walking along with his headphones on see if anybody
dropped any magical rings that got covered by dirt millennia ago or anything what's inside it
yeah you're in the wide open out here you look up and you're like oh shit other flying creatures
could probably see us um but you don't see anything of import.
And there's no Fantasia situation with this Tain getting back up and attacking us in its shards.
No, it did have fast healing, which I revealed to you, but Sir Will took it below its con.
How many hit points did it have?
Can you tell us that?
Oh, 370 or something.
Gross.
can you tell us that oh 370 or something gross yeah and had dr 15 against cold iron and slashing spell resistance 30 i was waiting for you to throw something out of me
uh uh resistance to a cold and fire 30 and then wow it's pretty pretty well built john and then
fast healing 10 so i mean it was really wow
man after that first round obviously had three ones but like it was usually after nesters left
at a creature it's it's in bad shape ac34 uh but i was like okay this this might be a good fight
man should have recruited it up i'll say for my part i'll say for my part thank god it was evil
uh because if that thing was neutral that is i did about 140 points of
damage 130 all cut through dr and that would have done none of that oh that would have been great
so yeah i would have been just running around like behind baron just healing him or something
yeah oh gosh yeah every every single one of my spells would have been 50-50. Yeah. Oh, when I saw SR30, I'm like, this is going to be a fight!
But it was.
It was.
It was a good fight.
It was.
I mean, I almost killed Baron.
Almost legit.
It's the hallmark of a good fight.
That's fine a good fight.
That's how you know.
At this stage of the campaign.
So, yeah, there doesn't seem to be anything of import here, unfortunately.
However, where Metra and Nestor ended up after that teleport is on the other side of the room,
with those double doors leading into an area that Metra had seen on the ethereal plane,
but you have not explored on the material plane.
If you'd like to check that out and go back to the battlements.
Yeah, let's do that.
the battlements.
Yeah, let's do that.
Metra,
I don't believe I was here the first time you explored it.
I don't think I was, but in either case,
what do you remember?
I remember there were guards.
Right?
Regards of whom?
Regarding what?
Guards of the you.
Oh, there were guards.
There were guards. You killed them? No, no. While you were ethereal? No, guards with a U. Oh, there were guards. There were guards.
Oh, right.
You killed them.
No, no.
While you were ethereal?
No, no.
I thought you were sending your best regards to whatever was on the other side of the door.
That's usually what I say.
Don't waste that sentiment.
That's my tagline.
It's what I say when I strike fear into the hearts of giants.
Best regards.
Best regards.
All right, yeah, that's good.
I can see that being effective.
This is a good final line. Best regards. Best regards. All right, yeah, that's good. I can see that being effective. This is a good final line.
Best regards.
And then I send them to an extra-dimensional maze.
Right.
I did see guards here, right?
The guards that you saw were on the other side of the entrance door.
So the double doors leading to the north here lead to a room that had some statues in it
and sort of the main entrance.
On the other side of that main entrance was a room full of cloud giants,
and that's the room where the guy ran around to the other side,
and they were fighting, and Sir Will was running.
Casting fog cloud.
Casting fog cloud.
You already killed those guys.
Now, that doesn't mean that the room hasn't been repopulated,
but when you first came up, there was no one there.
And then to the north of that room, it leads to the battlements that had the big staircase going down that you came up whilst on the ethereal plane.
Sure, sure.
Battlements.
Battlements.
All right, well, should Baron might open the door?
Yes.
I'm going to check it for traps first.
Good idea.
Thank you, Nestor.
Yeah.
Don't bother
thanking me yet.
That is a 45.
It does not appear
to be trapped. Okay. Looks clean to me.
Let us open
it, Lexington.
He's reaching up
with his hand to the doorknob.
Not quite.
Oh, I've got it. I've got it uh and he'll start to open
the door
and I need not do a polygon
reveal for it is already
polygon revealed
um this is
your terrace area uh it's been a while
since you've been here it like the
room you're leaving is open
to the sky above
and it lies right in front of
the main doors to the castle
which are flanked by two
carriated columns depicting
life-size cloud giant
guards
they stand in an ornate marble facade
to the east and then
to the west is an
imposing white marble
statue of a dragon
overlooking a semicircular
balustrade.
Gates exiting
to the north.
Well,
I will not be setting foot in there.
For it is obvious those statues will animate and destroy us.
Well, it's only because of the term we used to describe them,
caryatid columns, is a loaded term.
It is.
For anyone who's ever read Fiendfolio,
the British published, uh, British published publication that came out
in 1984.
You would be aware
that that is a specific
name of a creature in that book.
But that doesn't mean, I mean, it is
also a generalised term
for a column that is made to look
like a living being. Yes.
Very artistic in nature, but I... So, maybe it's a
tip-off, or maybe it's just
a coincidence. Did you also take
AP Art History in high school? I did.
I did. I wasn't able to read
any of the material, but luckily it was mostly visual.
Yes. So you weren't able to pass the
test. You weren't able to get a 4 or a 5. Yeah.
Well, I also threatened the instructor.
Ah. Which was the main
probably reason that I was able to pass with such flying colors.
Yes, I never took you for an appreciator of art.
Oh, I love art.
Well, anyway, I love selling it, stealing it, stealing it and selling it.
And so having an appreciation for how much it's worth more than anything is why I took the course.
The important thing is to sell it for more than you stole it for.
Yeah, and normally that's the good thing with
stealing is that it's ordinarily
like you don't spend very much
at all
in the process of stealing.
The profit margins are much wider
than in many other
fields of industry.
You don't like to invest a lot
and do a really elaborate heist? Well,
occasionally I'll buy a newspaper
or something as a
sort of disguise.
So if I'm sitting outside and it's just like,
oh, it's not a thief, it's just a fellow with a newspaper.
And then I'll put it away and then...
What is a newspaper?
A newspaper, well, I'll explain
for someone who's from, obviously,
probably some remote
areas of the world
without such things
it's a paper
that contains news
now I'm not able to
read most of it
but some of them
some of the finer
publications will have
like a lot of pictures
in them
so that's what I focus on
it's also just a disguise
you don't want to be
distracted by news
better as a disguise
no exactly yeah
I don't want to be like
caught up in the
you know news of the day
when I should be focusing on stealing a carry-out at Column.
Well, it's a nice little diversion, don't you think?
Why don't you just go ahead and go in?
As I said, I have no interest in it.
It will earn us nothing,
and I believe our weapons will be utterly ineffective against them.
Very well.
Metro closes the door.
To the second floor, then.
Yeah, I don't know.
You guys can go in if you want,
but I just hate getting dragged
into some construct stupid fight.
It doesn't mean anything.
Can one of us walk in and then just fly away
just in case it's not a trap?
Can one of us go in invisible and open the other door and then the
rest of us just sprint through the other door i like it which one of you would like to become
invisible not i would be rather useless i am too loud now on the far side remind me where are we
going that is like a big flight of steps that leads up to more battlements no that is the
battlements and those stairs go down to the previous
floor. Oh, okay. So there's nothing to be earned.
Why are we even going in this room? By digging
around this room. It's just to see stuff
that you hadn't seen on the material plane.
I've never seen a dragon
that looks like that before.
It's kind of cool. Yes.
Yeah, possibly flavor text. So it's
just those obvious
monsters in that room
and nothing else of interest that appears.
Can we do a perception check from the open doors
to see if we get anything special out of it
before we abandon this route?
You can give me a knowledge arcana on the dragon.
Hmm.
I rolled a 16.
Oh, god damn it.
We're so dumb.
The dumbest group I pull out a copy of guns and ammo
and dragons and I look it up to see if it's
in there guns and ammo and dragons
oddly enough it's not in that issue
damn I wonder
maybe we
should have sabotaged those
saddles after all
I've been saying it each rest Maybe we should have sabotaged those saddles after all.
I've been saying it.
Each rest.
It is, I think, a brilliant idea to set them off.
Give them, I know I'd be utterly lost without my saddle.
This would be a blow to their efficiency, their effectiveness, I think.
A wolf without a saddle, after all, is just a dog.
I love it.
Don't listen to him, Lexington.
Metra begins immediately to plan a prank. It's a rude, crude art.
She's going to plan a prank.
Next dress, she's going to wake up an extra 20 minutes early.
Plan a prank.
Talk to Lexington.
And hide the saddle.
Involve Lexington.
Metra, Metrara can we still do the
shaving cream thing to the will i've been talking to you about that for a while now yes of course
also what was that sheriff nothing nothing do you have a do we have a bowl we can fill it fill
full of warm water oh yeah oh yeah i love watching sir will well never mind um so we're skipping this room is that what y'all
want to do baron's totally on board after nearly facing death like that for the moment he's a bit
shaken so if we want to circumvent this and go up the secret ladders multiple secret ladders now
you also have another door on this level that you haven't explored. Oh, yes, we do.
Double doors to the east.
Oh, yeah.
Let's do that.
Let's do that.
That seems much better.
Yeah.
Okay.
Lexington, to the east.
Yeah, we'll head back in and leave those obvious animated columns behind.
For another day.
I still want to look at them i do too
someday yeah i just and i'd be fine to fight them if i just had any idea what damage is that
they're so annoying hardness and like crap but maybe at this level we could just crush them i
don't know maybe your bullets just you know shatter off chunks of stone and it doesn't matter.
But I certainly know I'd be useless.
I'd just be using spell slots.
I don't like fighting constructs generally, but I'm just curious.
Well, Nestor, why don't you check this door?
Let's see if you'll satisfy your curiosity with a check for traps.
Oh, thank you.
I will indeed. Oh, thank you. I will indeed.
Oh boy, that is... Just make sure...
I'm going to get rid of this wind we're inside.
That is...
41.
Does not appear to be trapped.
Once again, looks clean.
I'm happy to give it a go
with these special gloves
I have. Curse!
Silence goes through the door and a stealth
check
of a 25.
Okay.
You open the door
and
it's a dark room.
It's very dark.
You guys all have the ability to see in the dark,
but the darkness towards the southern portion of the room is impenetrable,
whereas the darkness in front of you,
you see everything in the black and white colors that you normally see.
It is a huge, huge room, it appears,
although, like I said, the southern part is
blanketed in impenetrable darkness. It looks like two stories tall, almost impossibly tall
by human standards. It's a truly gigantic display of magnificence. The parts of the rooms you can see,
there are plastered walls that are illuminated by two high windows in the northeast corner.
And these wall mounted lamps,
um,
that are frescoed with colorful life-sized images of perhaps the
protagonists of some cloud giant mythological cycle in
which regal Lords,
heroic rock riders,
elegant sorcerers,
and serene harpists fight a grandiose battle for the triumph of beauty and
civilization in a celestial realm.
Ceilings are about a hundred feet high.
And it's this beautiful, like an old church,
just like the Stations of the Cross.
Instead, it's the Stations of, like,
Cloud Giant Superiority.
Stations of the Frost.
The Stations of the Frost.
Episode title.
The Cloud.
There it is.
If only it was an Scare Guard.
Yeah, no, these are cloud giants just, like, fighting a battle for beauty.
I like that.
Let me reveal some of the room.
Waiting a war against ugly people.
The walls are filled with murals of the giants smiting.
Not attractive.
Marching under the banner of General Kim Kardashian.
Marching under the banner of General Kim Kardashian.
Metro, you obviously can see further than your friend, so I'm going to reveal more.
It's so obvious, because she just keeps being like, I see that, do you?
I see that, do you?
But your friends cannot see the extent that you can. Double doors on
the opposite side of the room
leading
who knows where, and then
shits and giggles, I've
also showed you there are double doors leading
to the north. So this is absolutely
beautiful, right? It's gorgeous.
Baron looks up at it and takes
it all in and says,
they may be profane, but they're a hell of an artist.
Whoever did this.
I haven't seen anything like that since I visited Hahelm,
which is like 18,000 feet up the capital,
the emperor's peak of the Five Kings Mountain,
where the most opulent dwarven creations in all of Galarian reside.
And he's just overwhelmed by the scale and size of this.
Looking a hundred feet up from four feet down on the ground.
It's incredible.
And Nestor comes up when he hears profane.
Comes up with great interest and looks up.
He says, like, what are you talking about?
They're all fully clothed.
That's false advertising yeah fuck off man
i think that one's wearing shorts uh see yeah doesn't do much to oblige nester
metra hands him a sharpie okay it's cool all right do your worst thank you
nester proceeds to do what i usually do when I come into the office on the whiteboard.
Which is, we can't say on the radio.
All right.
What do you guys do?
Sir Will will go in if no one else is going.
Well, first, perception on the room.
Anything in the frescoes that seems
awry? Any kind of
movement? Obviously there's something that's going to leap out
and kill us in the southwestern corner in the darkness,
but for now, anything else?
And acknowledge religion or history
or anything like that on the frescoes to learn a little
bit more, if that's worthwhile? Sure.
30 perception.
Okay.
36 perception.
36 perception.
And then I have religion.
Natural 20, 25.
Yeah, I mean, Metra, when you came up the stairs onto the battlements,
the room away from the room you guys just said,
fuck that room,
there were statues that told a similar story,
but you really didn't take a second to take them all in
because it didn't look important.
You were looking for enemies for the most part.
So this just has a feeling like they're celebrating
a cloud giant culture and history,
but no real significance beyond that.
Other than something you thought about early on, that the cloud giants are a peaceful,
good people, or at worst, neutral.
These battles that they're fighting, it's not them crushing the small folk like you've
seen in other images that the fire giants and even the frost giants drew and those
Urgothoa worshippers where it's even
more depraved. These were people
that were like trying to spread
civilization and beauty. It's
such a shame that Volsys
took them
because they would have
been the way and he was smart to do it because they
would have been the ones to be like, ah, we want nothing
to do with this. And in fact, if you're going to
be doing this stuff, we're going to take you out.
But he's too smart.
He's too good.
Yeah.
Upon closer inspection, Baron says, I take it all back.
They aren't profane.
I wish all giants behaved like this.
I wish this could have been the dominating culture.
But alas, we have to deal with the hand we're dealt.
And I still wish they were nude.
It's noted. I'm going to write with the hand we're dealt. And I still wish they were nude. Noted.
I'm going to write it in my journal this evening.
And yeah, you just, you look to the south and it's just this impenetrable darkness.
It's like a cloud hanging over the room.
I'm going to cast light on copper piece and kind of toss it into the corner from the doorway.
It goes in and
gets absorbed.
Deeper darkness.
Do I have the ability
to counter that?
Most likely not.
Maybe you need daylight. I have deeper darkness
but I do not have daylight. Make it even
darker. Do you have dispel magic?
I do have dispel magic actually. Yeah baby!
Boom! Can I just
cast it on him?
An effect I believe. You can use dispel magic
to end one ongoing spell that has been
cast on a creature or object.
Deeper darkness
is usually cast on an object. Right.
But you'd have to see the object too.
I knew he was going to say that. Cast it on joe just rolled his eyes so hard how would he see the object if it's in deeper darkness
relentless siege of irritating gm this well no this isn't this isn't the case though with detect
magic we can concentrate and wait and we can triangulate precisely where it's emanating from and then he can
cast a spell on that that is phenomenal
grant phenomenal want to step into
the room no
sir will
will detect evil
and will go into the room but first he's going to
detect evil as a standard action that goes
60 feet he can only see 60 feet
and then he will slowly trot
in and each round keep this uh the
detect magic going and just moving a few feet at a time uh waving that evil back and forth do i
detect any evil the presence or absence of evil within 60 feet okay so you enter the room does
anybody enter with him a baron will go alongside of him and be detecting chaos. Okay.
Metro will stay, you know, closest to her will, but yes, we'll go into the room.
Okay.
Oh, I need darkvision, right?
Are you?
No, no, no, because my sniper goggles.
I have sniper goggles.
Oh.
So what we were doing is like... Casting it on you?
Yeah.
Yeah, I can do that
Uh
This will last for
16 hours perfect
I cast it on you
I press my palm against your face
And I'm just like
See
Push his head back
Um
Presence or absence of evil Troy
Within 60 feet of
Sir Will
chaos within barren 60 feet
magic within metro 60 feet
I believe it's magic
Sir Will trots in followed by
everyone else Nestor stays outside
and you're detecting when you get
about 10 feet or so in
two things happen
one you detect When you get about ten feet or so in, two things happen.
One, you detect evil to the south within this deeper darkness.
What else were you detecting, Baron?
Chaos.
You also detect chaos.
Oh, no.
You are so mean to us. And a voice inside baron's head says
no oh my god roll a will say oh no is this a spell or a spell like ability thank you it sure is
skid is um i hired him as my attorney.
My legal counsel for the day. So after last
week you're going to take control of Baron and have us
kill him for you?
I wouldn't be worried about Baron.
Total of
a 38. Jesus Christ!
You never have to worry!
17 on the die.
Roll for initiative.
Okay.
Did you?
Roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll, roll for initiative.
Oh, baby.
Oh, baby.
Let's get this show on the road.
I want to say I'm using another new die this week. Thanks to my buddy Frank from Columbus.
My buddy Frank in Columbus.
And Twins.
Gave me a gorgeous Amber D20.
And it just rolled a natty 15 on its first game time roll.
Thanks, Frank.
Let's get a rookie, too.
What's the total, then?
28 for Nestor.
28 for Nestor.
Sir Will?
17.
He's got a lot of armor on, man.
Baron.
Get off my back.
The good roll was wasted on that Will save.
This is a 21.
Wasted?
21.
It's a six on the die, baby.
Netra.
I got a beautiful die from a listener when we were in Indianapolis,
and it has a fuck on the natural one.
Ah, very nice. But a yeet
on the 20.
Did you yeet? I yeeted.
You yeeted! Nice!
It's from Shaw Shaw. What's your total?
29. 20.
Nice. Oh, that's good.
That's good.
It was contained in a
in a in a
dice holder in the shape
of the Cthulhu monster
Groth. Yes, the eyeball thing.
It's a planet-sized monster
with an eye that it closes
when it wants to disguise itself
from other things that can see it.
It's amazing. Really cool.
It turns into a slice of the universe.
The night sky in front of you as it closes its eye.
Wow.
Well, it's time to yeet, yeet, yeet all over the place.
It's Metra's turn.
That's actually a different...
We'll talk later.
I think I did it right, Grant.
Okay.
Okay.
So if their detect spells gave them a result, does mine give me a result?
I walked in also casting detect magic.
Do I detect?
Detect magic?
Yeah, sure.
What's it, within 60 feet?
Yeah.
Yeah, you sure do detect magic.
You detect an overwhelming amount of conjuration magic to the south.
Does that give me enough information that I can try
to dispel magic on this deeper darkness?
Without being able to see what the object is, I just don't
think you can, buddy. I think you need to line of sight. I mean, I'm looking directly at it.
But you don't really have sight. You're looking just into pure, inky blackness.
Otherworldly blackness. If you don't really have sight. You're looking just into pure, inky blackness. Otherworldly blackness.
If you could penetrate the darkness,
then yes. I
cannot, and I also don't think, I think
given what this combat's probably going to be like,
spending two more, spending three rounds
locating the strength of this aura
and location of this aura is
not exactly going to be the best
use of time. Yeah, you know what, if you want to do that, I'll
consider it.
But yeah, I mean, I understand. Yeah, you know what? If you want to do that, I'll consider it. But yeah,
I mean, I understand. You think I'm
nitpicking you, but
you really do need to have line of sight, and you just have
line of sense. I don't need to have
line of sight to cast the spell magic, I don't think.
I mean, what makes you say that?
Because I can just counter
spell. Oh, that's a whole
different John.
Were you able to hold the detect magic long enough just counter spell oh that's that's that's that's a whole different john have you were you a different
bag of john were you able to hold the the detect magic long enough to identify oh yeah you just
have to spend three rounds which does not feel like the best use of time no maybe not but i mean
we can't see anything we are all effectively blind until we figure this out metro will cast haste
will cast haste.
Oh, cool.
Okay.
And then that gets everybody and then
she will also cast mirror image on herself.
Okay.
And then move
to the north end of this room.
Man, you know what's funny is like
we are in it. We are in it
now. Like these these are gonna be
great fucking encounters
until the end of the game. Oh, dear.
These are like puzzles. You're either gonna win
or you're gonna lose.
So, Metra, Cass,
Haste, uh, Quickened?
Quickened Mirror Image.
Quickened Mirror Image, regular Haste, John,
moves to the back of the room. Yep.
Okay. Did I see anything, John moves to the back of the room. Yep. Okay.
Did I see anything as I moved toward the back
of the room? No. No, you didn't.
Um...
Okay.
It is Nestor's turn.
Well, let me ask you a question. Yeah.
How did we know to roll initiative?
Um, because
a spell was cast on Baron. and we all know that baron
with had to bear down and withstand that so we knew he said something if you don't roll initiative
i'm just gonna keep attacking you for free you know what i mean we're in no i know i'm just
trying to understand from a metagaming standpoint like what sir will's first action is going to be
determined by is like how does he even know we're in danger yet maybe baron was like something's happening in my brain he heard that voice join me my god that would have
been so bad so so bad you shot your shot your shot's a shot yeah nester all right so I can move and ready, right? Yes.
As long as it's not a full.
All right, Nestor is going to scamper over next to Metra in the northern part of the room,
and he will fire a shot if he sees an enemy.
All right.
Here we go.
Here we go.
He's enjoying himself too much.
I don't like it.
Okay.
Roll a will save.
Metra.
Oh.
Has a 32 32 pretty damn good
pretty damn
good
it is Baron's turn
you hear that same voice
Troy
oh no
Metro says no thank you.
Hard pass.
Quite polite.
Can we have a society?
No.
Pauses.
Seems to think for a moment.
No.
No. No, no.
Ball.
Baron, what do you want to do in this unwinnable situation?
Baron hears this creature trying to enter into his mind and take control of him
and still can't see anything because of how whatever spell he has is going on
is plunging the southern half of this room into darkness.
So he is going to cast
protection from evil on himself.
Which has
a bit of protection
against mental control. And he's actually
going to step out of the room.
Unless he can
target something. He currently can't target anything?
You don't see anything
you can target. Okay.
And then could I do like any type of knowledge roll on what i've felt like a religion on that um i don't know no you really can't
unfortunately it's spellcraft is weird where you can do it like in the moment um or detect magic
sometimes i'll let you do a religious residualcraft, but you don't know. Someone is trying to dominate you, though.
You feel pretty confident about that.
Yeah, I just want to get more information on this situation,
but I don't feel like I can at this moment.
Well, let's see if Sir Will can, because it's his turn, and he stinks.
It is rather sweaty in this armor.
I'm getting swampy.
Swampy, swampy. That would be the name of his next mount
Because Lexington's gonna die in this fight
I can feel it
You're joking
I'm not joking
I literally said I can feel it
He's going to walk up, trot up to this darkness
Lexington is hesitating
Can also feel the evil just okay boy
i hope my day protects us fear not he's gonna walk right up to the wall of darkness
well actually no that's dumb just stand 10 feet from the wall of darkness uh look into it and
just say show yourself i fear no evil. And he will also cast protection
from evil on himself.
And that'll be that round.
Alright.
I guess I get some extra buffing.
It's back to the top
of round two.
Metra.
Does the creature reveal
itself? It does not.
Maybe there is nothing back there maybe it's all
a distraction it could just be a magical effect yeah conjuration was what you detected so yeah
all right i'll detect magic again and i'll i'll spend you know i'll spend some rounds focusing
on it to look to determine the location okay um moving right along it is nester's turn nester i'm just gonna delay okay at that
moment metra you can see things that are invisible yes oh yes all right so you and you alone see
a creature uh appear out of nowhere
about
20 feet away from Sir Will.
This like
clearly
invisible creature. No one else is seeing it because it
walks right over to Sir Will
and goes to attack
him. There! You waited until
all the way until it's next to me
to say something?
No, I waited until Troy was unspeaking.
It goes to slam you,
and you just feel something hit you,
and it doesn't do any damage.
It misses.
As a free action,
I tell Nestor exactly where it is,
exactly what square it is.
And you mentioned there's an invisible creature in the room?
As you do that.
When I'm explaining exactly where it is, I do, yes.
It's invisible? Try that.
Great.
All right.
I don't explain that it's invisible.
I say, it's right there.
Can any of you see?
I look around wildly.
Are you not seeing this?
Why are you doing it?
You're like, I'm taking crazy pills.
Okay.
Okay.
At that moment, the darkness in the back of the room begins to spread
and Sir Will
disappears into the darkness.
Oh no! And then in the darkness
he just hears
and then
Wobble!
Salad!
Salad!
One strike against you.
Oh no
We'll keep
Power attack on
That might be foolish
28 to hit
Miss
I mean it hits but it just hits armor
Your body shakes
With the force of this blow
And you detect something very very large Not too far away from you Your body shakes with the force of this blow,
and you detect something very, very large,
not too far away from you,
but you cannot see it at all.
And it knew I cast Protection from Evil on myself?
It did not.
Otherwise, it would have attacked someone else.
Or it would have tried Mind Control on me for a round.
Shut up.
Exactly!
I will take no shit from metagaming for you for one month. I didn't even think to
cast that on you. I just, you're not
a dominant enough creature that you could hurt
your allies like Metra and Baron could.
That's why I didn't cast it. I could hurt Nestor like a motherfucker.
It's true. It's true. It's mighty.
I'd rather control Nestor
to have him kill Baron or
Metra.
So, yeah, you feel this blow coming up against you.
And, yeah, I'm going to leave it at that for now.
And it is Baron's turn.
Baron, you see the darkness fill the doorway.
It's terrifying and, you know, prerequisite for sight in order to strike with a gun, usually.
Baron is going to cast Detect Invisibility,
or See Invisibility, I should say, on himself
and hope that he can see something.
I'm just trying to think.
He'll ready an action until his next turn,
which is that if he sees,
if this darkness is penetrated or anything,
he'll take a shot at who...
Oh, wait, he can't.
He's using an ability. He's using the ability.
He's using the action economy to cast the invisibility.
So that'll be his turn.
Okay.
Very good.
Very good.
This is an interesting one.
We've never quite had a fight quite like this.
Feels like a puzzle.
Uh-huh.
All right.
This is going to be interesting.
All right.
This is going to be interesting.
From the darkness at Nestor and Metra,
fire begins to come out.
Oh, my God.
This is the real deal.
A little fire. I see a couple of rays of fire come out of the darkness
in the direction of Nestor and Metra.
No saving throw.
Okay.
One, they're going to be ranged touch attacks to hit.
So first one against Nestor, touch AC 19.
Miss.
Miss.
And then this one Against Metra Natural 20
Ah
No
But which Metra
Ah
But which Metra
Alright so what do I have to roll
Well there are nine of me
There are nine of you
Is that max
Yeah
Well it's always max
At this point
Cause my
Alright so I'll roll a d10
I'll re-roll
No but I mean
You have to roll the images
Yeah yeah yeah
That's great
I'll re-roll on a, but I mean, you have to roll the images. That's great.
I'll re-roll on a 10 and a 9 hits.
Okay.
5.
So, blast one of your images with a nat 20 on a spell!
Sorry, Nate.
We could have gotten one of the 1,000 spell crits we have that never get read.
Never get read.
Sorry, guys.
It is Sir Will's turn.
Check one of those images off.
I just imagine him like in his helm.
He's like covered in darkness.
He's got his shield up in front.
In front? What is front?
Yeah. What is back? He's lost his allies.
Well, I can feel that, Metro!
But he can't. He doesn't know what to do here.
Get out of the room!
Get out of the room, all of you!
Get out of the room, all of you.
She says,
out of the room.
Oh, then I'm...
Ness is gonna take his turn.
And he is going to get out of the room.
He says, don't have to tell me twice!
And it will move out of the room, standing next to Baron.
Okay, let me just check your path there to see if that provokes.
It does.
So as Nestor runs out of the room, you feel a,
whoop, boom, come at you.
36 to hit
That's a hit
Okay, so whatever is in this darkness
That swung at Sir Will
Swings at Nestor
And Nestor takes
45 points of damage
On the way out, so Nestor runs out the door
And boom! Something hits him from the darkness
He just stumbles out
Towards Baron Sir Will the door and boom something hits him from the darkness he just stumbles out towards baron um
sir will oh man invisible creature right next to you and something in the darkness or some
things well i'm gonna take a shot then with concealment at whatever hit me uh okay whatever
hit you you cannot see, unfortunately.
That thing...
You can fire at it.
You can fire at something?
50% mischance, yeah.
Just in that direction?
Yeah.
He knows, like, in the square...
If it hit him...
He knows where...
Oh, yeah, no, that's fair.
Okay, go ahead.
Okay.
That's a 30 to hit.
Well, roll the...
Well, let me...
Does a 30 hit?
No. Okay.
You see? I saved us how many hours?
I know, but he's not supposed to tell you. He's just afraid of you.
I didn't want to make you more upset.
Exactly.
Yes, no, a 30 is a miss.
Natural 2.
Natural
2.
Sir Will? 30's a miss, huh?
30's a miss, huh, buddy?
It's going to change everything, buddy.
Oh, dear.
All right.
All right.
Lots of strange things going on here.
Okay.
Okay. lots of strange things going on here uh okay so uh okay sir will is going to uh troy how do you want to rule on me um getting out of the room
uh you know how to get out okay uh but a full withdrawal would provoke if it had combat reflexes
right because of its reach whatever this thing is.
But it won't provoke from the invisible creature next to you.
Yeah.
Okay.
I'm going to do that.
At Metra's advice slash command,
she says, get out of the room!
He's going to say, let's go Lexington.
Form a new line of defense.
And he will go through the doors.
All right, so you'll run out the doors.
Just to the other side, about 10 feet in front of Baron,
but to the side of him slightly,
because I need you to move me, because I can't touch myself.
Oh, wait.
I found me in the dark.
There we go.
Don't touch me.
I will move out, turn back toward him,
and then I will say... Let me check take my aol because he does have uh combat
reflexes um he or she or they um here we go problem is i still got that power attack on
that is a problem unless i hit uh 30 miss because of haste.
Faller.
Metra, you badass!
And he turns back around. Nice try,
foul creature!
My ally detected
your chaos from afar.
You will be brought to the side of law soon enough!
And he touches
his armor and he casts Iron
Skin.
Nice.
And any exposed piece of his skin that was visible through the armor now suddenly turns almost into metal.
He's like Colossus.
Yes.
Is that an immediate action or swift action?
No, it's a standard action.
Didn't you full withdraw?
No, I just moved.
Oh, so that would provoke from a number of different creatures. I thought you't you full withdraw? No, I just moved. You just moved?
Oh, so that would provoke from a number of different creatures.
I thought you did a full withdrawal.
Oh, no.
There's a lot going on in the darkness here.
I don't think it'll really affect you.
The big one is the one that missed.
Yeah.
Okay, you're fine.
It's so funny.
He probably doesn't even know that multiple creatures missed or whatever.
So, yeah, he just comes out, turns around and casts Ironskin
Okay, so three of you have exited the room
Metra is alone to the north, just staring 15 feet away from her into pure darkness
What do you do?
Second round, concentrating
Oh
Check magic
Alright, read it off, because now it gets cool.
Yes.
I know the number of different magical auras and the power of the most potent aura.
Okay.
But you started detecting magic before the combat even started, didn't you?
I stopped.
Oh, damn it.
Okay.
All right.
Number of auras.
Yes.
And power of the most potent aura. Okay. And with how many feet? Within how many feet? 60. All right. Number of auras? Yes. And? Power of the most potent aura.
Okay.
And with how many feet?
Within how many feet?
60.
60 feet.
Okay, because you moved to the back of the room, so that will change what you saw.
You only detect one aura from where you're standing.
Okay.
And what is it?
I said too much.
The power of the most potent aura.
The power of it?
I don't know what that means, but...
Like, is it powerful?
To the caster level?
It's really not that powerful.
It's not a very strong aura.
It's a...
I can't tell you.
Do I tell you what kind of aura?
Yeah, I already knew that.
No, you actually don't find out until the third round.
Like, the type...
Yeah, and then the next round i know the strength and location
yeah i basically told you that when you walked into the room and you detected the south will
detected evil baron detected chaos you detected an overpowering conjuration or okay then we got
into combat new game you started fighting and then you moved to the back of the room you started
detecting an aura that or detracted magic. You didn't detect anything.
Okay? Now you detect something.
One aura.
So what
that should tell you is, the original aura
you detected, you've moved away from.
And basically, whatever moved forward,
the
focal point of this deeper darkness
has, that's the new aura
that you're detecting.
Okay, great.
So this would be round one of that.
I'm going to move and continue concentrating on this.
Can I do that?
Yeah, it's a standard action.
Sure.
Yeah.
Just got to keep casting in each round.
Or concentrating on each round as a standard.
Metro's going to move all the way to the east side of the room.
Oh, wow.
No, no, no, no.
This is how people die.
She's got the mirror image.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
You'll never die.
Okay.
You move to the east side of the room.
Still concentrating, holding the aura.
We need to dispel this darkness.
It's so scary.
You're just holding it up to a wall of complete darkness yeah yeah what is in there i will not move as far as i do
because i want to make sure i can get more in my in my cone okay i should uh tell you
well no i don't have to tell you anything i'd love to tell you shit that's where you move oh
you came back the aura came back in maybe don't don't read too much shit. That's where you moved. Oh, you came back. The art came back in, maybe. Don't read too much into it.
That's where you stay.
Okay, the invisible creature will make its way out into the hallway with your friends.
Since none of them can see it.
Let me just check its speed.
I can see it.
You can.
All right, so Baron, you see this creature just fly up to Sir Will.
The creature just flew its last flight.
And goes to slam Sir Will.
And misses with a 26.
Oh, Guybury.
Fuck your house.
We must protect this house.
Okay.
Your family sucks.
Metra, as you are standing there, Metra.
So mean.
The darkness begins to spread around you.
Oh!
It is so scary to see it on Roll20.
It's just the whole gap is going away,
whole sections of the room.
You become bathed in darkness,
and you, similar to Sir Will,
hear a presence come up toward you.
Toward you.
A presence that doesn't care about your mirror images,
that can see exactly where you are.
I told you! You're the worst!
Not you!
Ah!
Oh no!
True seeing.
What to
do? What to do?
What do you
mean what to do?
Smash her head into a million pieces!
Yeah, I'm just seeing which is
worse. Oh man man that's so good
but it's not as much damage this is it by the way troy's been talking about how he wants to
get everything out before round one or survive round one so you do one cool thing with a monster
he's had several rounds now and he's in position and he's ready to rock and look he's he's like
not sure which one he wants to go with.
Right.
I think I made my choice.
If he does 230 points in this round, we really should run.
You feel something enormous bite you.
No, I don't.
I eat your step.
I break my concentration, but I eat your step.
You eat your step, and the bite just bites nothing.
And you're now on the ethereal plan?
I'm on the ethereal plan to be getting my next one.
What kind of action is that, immediate?
Yeah.
Okay, so no swift next round?
No swift.
Okay.
Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho.
It's Barron's turn.
Gotta get up pretty early to get on Metro.
Barron's gonna five foot step to get a perfect.
She's in trouble next round, though.
We got to get in there.
Yeah.
Perfect angle on the invisible creature.
Can I do any sort of knowledge check on this invisible creature?
Sure.
Give me a knowledge planes.
Can't do it.
So then Barron will attack at this creature.
Just making sure
you don't hit it. You can't really sense
its form. There's just this
sense of a
force of malevolence.
It doesn't even really look like a
person. 29 against
Touch AC. Against this malevolent
form. Oh yeah.
Give me a... you have you can see
invisible so i don't need a 50 chance that's just straight up hits mister look at where i'm shooting
and you fire two right uh 21 points of damage on the first attack what boom what are you shooting
at oh good baron i'm right yeah so like right by your ear right bullet goes someone's looking
right next to you just firing a gun at empty.E.'s face. You lost your mind!
It's a close shave, don't worry
about it. The second attack
will be a 23 against
touch AC.
23 against touch is a hit.
That will be
19 points of damage.
19 points
of damage. Weird, what is
this? Same attack again to hit and same amount of damage. Okay. What is this? Yeah. Same attack again to hit and same amount of damage again.
Okay.
Another 19.
Is this all getting halved?
Is this an incorporeal creature?
That's what I'm guessing.
An invisible incorporeal creature.
This one is a 19 against touch AC.
19 against touch is still a hit.
Out of the box.
20 points of damage.
20 points of damage, okay.
Final attack.
It's a natural one.
Oh, no!
We got a misfire.
Do we have a fumble with your lowest chance to hit against its pretty good touch AC?
a fumble with your lowest chance to hit against its pretty good
touch AC.
No, we won't, because I'm going to use
the lucky reservoir of grit within my
gun to immediately re-roll
a roll that would result in a
misfire, which includes that one. Nice.
Once per day.
That will not be a misfire.
That will go from a
91 to a 10 on the die for
a total of an 18 to hit against Touch AC.
That is a hit.
Nice.
Okay.
Here it comes.
It's going to be 22 points of damage.
And it is dead.
Yes!
Dude.
Nice.
Aaron, thank you so, so, so much.
Who are you going to call?
Lights up this invisible malevolent
force. Takes it out of the
combat. Wow.
Metra is still
on the ethereal plane, right?
Is it my turn?
No, no, no.
Yes, I am still on the ethereal plane.
Okay.
Okay.
Hmm.
I will say that that darkness is starting to radiate out into the hallway as well.
So.
Gross.
Let me just clear off everything you can't see.
The entire room is now complete darkness.
Yeah.
Good God.
Okay. Let's Good God. Okay.
Let's see here.
This is interesting.
Metro's still on the ethereal plane.
I'm going to play that game.
You roll a d100.
Okay.
Another one.
You teleporting to Skirgoot? Okay okay it is nester's turn mr tricky position you
got here buddy yeah it's really not it's nothing i can do i mean i could keep firing at where i
was firing but i have no reason to believe that whatever i was shooting at was still there. So, it's gonna hold.
Nestor will
hold, and it goes
to Sir Will.
Metra is lost
in the darkness up ahead. I'm still here.
Oh, dear.
Metra, I'm coming!
Sir Will, oh, man.
Alright, he's just gonna...
What the hell?
Who needs to think when I think nothing works anyway?
He's going to throw down his lance
and draw out Rose Light.
Holds it up in the air, looks toward it for guidance.
Though I cannot see you,
Hayomete will guide my hand!
And this blue light
ekes up his hand and then covers
the entire blade, and it begins
shining with this gorgeous
holy light.
And he casts a spell on the blade.
But it's
not enough light to do anything about
deeper darkness. Does it bring it up to regular
darkness, though? Does it take
a step deeper
darkness is a high level spell my friend oh right you'd have to have a higher level you have to have
daylight yeah which by the way i have on my spell list it's just not prepared i think you need a
higher level spell than daylight i think i think it's uh i'm pretty sure daylight beats deeper
darkness deeper darkness is third level yeah okay fourth level right yeah yeah so daylight always
prevails i don't think
that there is a darkness that beats daylight right i think that in the end light has the
highest level but light wins in the end all right sir will hell of a round comes back to metro
ethereal little ethereal metro metro uh reappears on the material plane
hi
welcome back
I could feel the wind
of this creature striking down on me
and do I know so where was it
when it struck me directly in front of me
no further away
it has decent reach you would think
but it's like but it's
to the west to the east to the north to the west, to the east, to the
north, to the south. Ah, you feel like that came from the
southwest.
Okay. Uh, Metro
is going to full withdraw.
She has the movement
to get out of the room, which she will do.
Wait, wait, wait. Before you do, are you doing
this right?
By the book, don't, I thought when you
did the ether step, you could only do like a
move move yeah movers move you can only move but full withdrawal is a move action isn't it's a full
round action full round action oh um but you do have haste i do have haste
you can only take move actions or free actions
so i can't you said so i can take two move actions or free actions.
So I can take two move actions, but not a full withdraw is what you're saying.
That sounds like it to me.
I mean, anyone else?
Sorry, I wasn't listening.
Am I the only Debbie Downer here?
Joe hates Metra.
Love Metra.
For the record, love Metra.
So what is your question?
You want to do what?
With Ethercept on your next turn, you can only take move actions or free actions.
And the question is, is a full withdraw a move action?
Or need I take two individual move actions that are not full withdraws?
Well, a full withdraw is a full round action.
Yeah, it's really just known as withdraw, and we call it full withdraw.
It is a full round action i'm looking at the
rules yeah yeah it's good that i wasn't listening to the discussion so everyone agrees with joe
right i'm not the only one but it's just a five foot step combined with a move action right you
can't do that but that's what it is like a full withdrawal but you can move double your speed yes
as opposed to like moving five feet and then only moving one move action right
i can you're saying i can't take a five feet and then only moving one move action. Right.
And you're saying I can't take a five-foot step and then do a move action?
Correct.
You can't take a five-foot step and then do a move action that includes movement.
You can only do move equivalent actions.
Yeah, and you can't take a five-foot step during the same round in which you withdraw,
if you were to withdraw.
All right.
You know what I'll do instead?
Dude, just take the swings.
You have mirror image.
You're fine.
It's going to hit. It's true sight.
It's true sight.
Oh, that's right. It's going to hit. Motherfucker! That was a pickle, huh? Yeah,. You have mirror image. You're fine. But you can, it's going to hit. It's true sight. It's true sight. Oh, that's right.
Motherfucker! That was a pickle, huh?
Yeah, I'd have to see if that's... This is a bit of a pick.
This is a true pick.
Okay, well then, there's only one
thing to do. Uh, I
will roll the cast defensively.
Uh, which
I will get automatically, but just for funsies.
I get it. Uh, and
Metro will dimension door outside of the room with Nestor.
Oh,
I can't do that.
Nope.
That's a,
that's not,
that's a spell.
Another rule is not a move action.
No,
I'm serious though.
No,
it's not.
It's okay.
It's an action to cast a spell.
For some reason,
I always thought you would like dimension door and then do something.
Yeah.
One other clarification,
just for this situation that we all might be in pretty soon
as whatever moves this darkness moves it around
or increases how wide it is, whatever's happening.
You can't take a five-foot step when you're hampered by darkness.
That's true.
That is also true.
That's also true.
That's also true.
You know what?
I'll just take two move actions and provoke.
Okay.
And get out of the room. Two move. Okay. And get out of the room.
Two move actions to provoke and get out of the room.
I will go up to the north and around, so I'm assuming.
I'm going to try, you know, with a general sense of the creature,
I'm going to try to hug the northern wall as best as possible.
Okay.
Hopefully avoid multiple attacks.
This is like half speed if you can't see where you're going.
Yeah, I think so.
Half speed unless you take an acrobatics check.
You can't take a standard action, but you can take two moves.
That's awesome.
Yeah, but haste, so.
Yep.
Right.
Should be okay.
Yeah.
Oh, so you got out of there.
Well, I'm waiting to see what you're doing here before I break down pan.
Go ahead and hit me.
Can you get all the way there in darkness? Even with haste?
And you only get one move action.
No.
I get two move actions.
You get two move actions?
He just can't do standard actions.
He just can't do standards.
Or full.
Move actions, plural.
Okay, then you can do it.
And he's going to take two attacks of opportunity on you
and hopefully kill you.
No, he can't because the move only provokes once.
It's not a full withdraw. It's fine. Remember, you can't take two move only provokes once. It's not a full withdraw.
It's fine.
Remember, you can't take two AOs for the same action.
Oh, yeah, we did talk about that a couple of episodes ago.
So if you move through multiple squares that one creature is threatening,
you don't have that reflex.
You're right.
Okay.
All right, so just one.
That is a 34 to hit.
Yes, and it ignores the images.
It ignores the images, yes.
48 points of damage.
All right, so even with double move actions and haste,
you have no problem getting out of here, right?
Okay.
Good thing it didn't provoke twice.
Yeah.
Make sure I'm not missing anything here.
My God, is this what the rest of this book is going to be like?
Close the door.
All right, so Metro gets out. I'll tell you anything here. My God, is this what the rest of this book is going to be like? Close the door. All right.
So Metro gets out.
I'll tell you, this is pretty brutal, but it's also a really fun encounter.
Yeah.
Like, it's super complicated, but it's not tedious in terms of on the show end.
Yeah.
I mean, I can't do anything.
None of us can do anything. Yeah, nobody can do anything.
Close the door.
Yeah, just shut the door.
All right.
So here's what's going to happen now.
That was Metro, right?
Just making sure I'm staying in order here.
Yep.
That darkness starts moving towards all of you.
Actually starts moving towards all of you
in a way that makes the entire hallway
dark. Oh, Jesus.
And you just hear
a...
Hold on one second.
Yes?
Deeper darkness, does it work
like darkness in that, is the radius
20 feet?
I mean... From the object?
You really should be rolling checks to know what this is.
60 foot radius.
Yeah, it would be 60 foot radius.
Oh, okay.
So this darkness begins to spread out into the hallway, bathing...
The music is perfect.
All four of you in darkness as something approaches directly in the doorway, in fact,
making it impossible for you to close the doors on it.
The door that cannot be closed.
Hit it with the door!
Slam the door.
It's not immune to doors!
Slam the door on its toes!
It's DR10 door!
And now it goes to bite Metro.
Oh, why does it hate Metra?
32?
Yeah.
Oh, shit.
Give me a fortitude save.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Wait a minute, wait a minute. What's your AC?
23.
Oh.
You weren't even close.
I was going to say, so this sword that I have out is a magic circle against evil.
So you get a plus two deflection bonus to your AC.
I'm not sure it's going to matter.
Uh, 27 on the fortune set.
Fail.
Wow.
Oh, gosh.
Oh, wow. A couple things are going to happen. Oh, gosh. Oh, wow.
A couple things are gonna happen.
Oh, no.
First, you take 22 points of damage from this bite.
Oh, no.
And then you just start... Having these wrenching spasms that rack your body,
causing you to be nauseated.
And you take four points of strength damage
and four points of dex damage.
Oh, no.
Oh, my God.
And we'll see you next week.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, Metra.
Truly sickening. Oh, God. Oh, Metra. Truly sickening.
Oh, God.
Oh, God.
Troy, can I hear the confusions one more time?
Oh, God.
Well, at least we know in the darkness that something horrible is happening to Metra and can act accordingly.
I think everything's going to be all right.
I think I can take one shot with concealment against that noise to put her out of her misery.
Oh, my God.
