Starting point is 00:00:00 The warning woods has haunting horror stories that are sure to linger with you long after listening I'm miles tridle writer and narrator of the warning woods Each week I write an original scary story and share it with you if you're into scary stories You need to check out the warning woods listen on Spotify Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts Just search for the warning woods and click play at your own risk Can you change your personality How does peer pressure work should you ever really trust your gut? These are just a few of the topics we've recently tackled on my podcast, Something You Should Know.
Starting point is 00:00:45 It's a podcast where leading experts give you valuable intel that you can use in your life today. I'm the host, Mike Carruthers, and with over a thousand episodes and over four thousand mostly five-star reviews, I invite you to check out Something You should know, wherever you listen. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Friday night. I'm not wearing underwear and it's time for chaos. Oh, good. Indeed. To be sure. This is the second start to this episode because I fucked up the first one.
Starting point is 00:02:01 I said, Lurdies. You might want to do it a third time because Ross talked over you I'm keeping it. I think this is the one. This is the one. I'm about to take a big sip of water before I What was lost in this is that I am not wearing underwear Because and I'm sharing with this with all of you because am I the only one that waits until there's absolutely no underwear or socks left Before you do the laundry. I will wear like my last pair of dress socks to the gym before I do laundry.
Starting point is 00:02:30 I'll be like the fanciest tuxedo dress socks while I'm at the gym. Same thing with underwear. And today I was like, ah, I went beyond Rangoon. It's very un-Virgo of you. I know. I just, it's because I don't want to fold it. I don't want to fold it.
Starting point is 00:02:46 I don't mind doing it. It's knowing that I have to fold it that I just like. Nobody wants to, but you have a duty to do your laundry and fold it. I do mine every week because of doing kickboxing. I have hand wraps and I only have three of them. So once they're up, I need to do laundry and I just do all my laundry.
Starting point is 00:03:02 Every week? Yeah, I do it every week. Otherwise I run out of clothes and then I can't go to the gym. That is very adult. Ross, how often do you do laundry? Yeah, like once every week and a half. I don't let it go to E, man. As soon as that needle dips below the halfway point, I got it washing and tumbling because the bottom of that drawer has
Starting point is 00:03:26 not been seen in eons. I don't know. I want to know what's down there. I think I'm watching Thanksgiving clothes today. I mean, it's that. That is how long I will wait. Rob, you got to be with me on this. Maybe this is I'm in between. I've got an East Coast geographical No, I I build in a couple of like shitty old pairs of underwear So that when I get to those they're like way too big and stretched out and they're like out-of-date Boxers or something just something where it's like just the it's like wearing a hair shirt If you're like a Catholic of medieval times. You steal the shame.
Starting point is 00:04:05 It's like I know, yeah, I just like know it. I'm like, oh, this is awful. I need like my, you know, my me undies or whatever. No hashtag, no sponsorship. But- No, that is a good point. All right, so I'm not the only one. I do have that.
Starting point is 00:04:19 I have like those last five pairs that I don't want to wear. They're uncomfortable. Yeah. And I just kept pushing the envelope. Just like that episode of Seinfeld, where Kramer tries to drive the car until it goes on empty. It's the same thing. I'm like, I could just do one more day.
Starting point is 00:04:31 One more day. And today I was like, I pushed it too far. I will say, I usually do my laundry regularly. But there was a stint where I was just so freaking busy and just did not want to deal with it that I went out and bought even more underwear. Because I just was like, do not. I don't want to do it right now. Been there.
Starting point is 00:04:48 Yeah. Yeah. That happens a lot on the road. It's like, well, I guess we're buying underwear today. I saw it in my last three. I feel like I'm still in the honeymoon phase of not being in an apartment where I have laundry in unit. I have laundry in my house. I'm just like, I can just do whatever I want. So I do. Really makes you feel like a Rockefeller. Yeah. Since the days of Chicago winter laundromats are behind me back then, oh yeah,
Starting point is 00:05:13 I'd go hit rock bottom. Before. I used to have an apartment on the Upper West Side and right across the street was this little place you could drop off a bag of laundry. That was the thing. You could do it yourself. But if you do the drop off, it costs way more.
Starting point is 00:05:32 It was totally not worth it, except for all the time you would save. You drop it off, you pick it up, they did a great job, folded and everything. Well I had to leave this apartment and I had all this laundry and I was like, I don't want to bring this to the next apartment. I just brought like three bags of laundry over to this woman and I had all this laundry and I was like I don't want to bring this to the next I just brought like three bags of laundry over to this woman and I didn't pick it up for like a year and a half I went back there and like thankfully the place is still there it's like I think I have some bags she's like oh I don't know where these are it was like in the warehouse finally come
Starting point is 00:06:01 police we thought you were dead. Just like three. How many clothes do you have? I mean, I don't know. This is what I'm learning, is that I feel like, I can't imagine, you're like, what is the, yeah, what is this pyramid of clothes you live on? I went through a phase where I really couldn't throw stuff out. I'm still pretty bad at it. I'm like, I'm going to fit into this small tank top again.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Let me keep it. And now it's just like used as a rag. But I can't, I have gonna fit into this small tank top again. Let me keep it. And now it's just like used as a rag, but I can't, I have trouble throwing out clothes. Cause I'm bad at like Marie Kondoing thing. Like things bring me joy from the memory of this shirt. I remember bartending in that shirt. I don't know. I gotta do some cleaning.
Starting point is 00:06:41 Well, plus you have like, don't you have like 12 people that live in your house? I can't imagine. Like the idea of doing laundry feels very daunting and I haven't even witnessed it. Well, also, because I'm a psychopath, my wife is like, I'll do your laundry. Just let me do it. I'm like, no, you don't know how to do it. I like it because I don't like drying my t-shirts.
Starting point is 00:06:58 I have to hang up all of my t-shirts because all I wear are hoodies and brewery t-shirts and I don't want them to shrink. So I wash them and I want to make sure it's in cold water. She just mixes the white stuff. So that's your problem. That's what I do. If it can't be washed in the regular cycle, I don't own that type of item. Like, if it doesn't live, it's gone.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Yeah, but Troy's a sartorialist. He can't have his wife shrinking his, like, pissing beaver IPA t-shirt. His fourth black hoodie. This is my favorite black hoodie. We were on tour once and someone told me that Kate said, I think Troy wears the same clothes every day. And then I brought it up in conversation in public with her.
Starting point is 00:07:39 It was the jeans. It was the jeans. Well, yes, I only only wear a pair of pants. This is my pants. Because you kept wearing jeans to the airport and I'm like, why do you choose not comfort? And you're like, these are my only pants. I went through this phase, like pre-COVID,
Starting point is 00:07:52 where I was wearing like joggers everywhere, like on stage. I'd just come out and be like, this is comfortable. Why, what are we doing here? I was like a New Jersey gangster for a while. It's just, I got it. I was like, this is comfort. But anyways, my, I may have to get up
Starting point is 00:08:07 and put my clothes on a dryer. Not in the dryer, of course, but I might have to hang them up halfway through the episode, in which case, talk amongst yourselves. But for now, it's time for chaos. And my goodness, you know, we've mentioned our production coordinator, Michael. He is backstage
Starting point is 00:08:25 For every single one of these episodes and as he so eloquently put in his recap of episode 3 hell of a first day in England I forgot it was your first day Yeah in London first day We just dropped our bags off and then We just dropped our bags off and then Fought a lizard person got into a fight like Dr. Baggs over the hody
Starting point is 00:08:55 Went to chat to a to a journalist and then almost got ripped apart by a lizard lady Didn't even have any tea or taken any sites Let's take you back a little bit so after discovering some articles, some newspaper articles that Jackson Elias was interested in, because you're just following in his footsteps here, using what very little leads you have to try and figure out what was going on with Jackson in England. Why was he here and did he attract some attention that led to what happened to him in New York? How is this all tied in to his exploration of what happened to the Carlisle expedition? So you go to a place called the Scoop. It's kind of a
Starting point is 00:09:29 tabloid. You head over to Chelsea after looking at some of the articles because you find out one of them is about some upstart artist who apparently makes very disturbing paintings. Why was Jackson interested in this? You don't know. So you arrive at the Shipley residence where you are greeted by the artist's mother, woman by the name of Bertha Shipley. She seems like a kindly old woman.
Starting point is 00:09:58 She introduces you to her son, Miles, and he's a young man. He's very gaunt. He's kind of twitchy and nervous, and he's constantly like rubbing his arms and Just seems very out of place. Maybe like his mother runs the roost Anyways, they take you to the garret the attic of their little townhouse Where all of Miles paintings are after you make it seem like maybe you're interested in buying one of the paintings
Starting point is 00:10:23 On the way there you notice that the house is very dark and disheveled Marga rolls a natural world roll actually gets an extreme success on a natural world roll to notice there's a Pervasive smell throughout the house similar to the smell that you would you would you would get at the reptile house at the zoo That's odd. You don't see any reptiles You get up there and Carter actually volunteers to go back down to the kitchen with Bertha to help her bring up some tea for the guests meanwhile miles Goes on to explain to Vaughn Margot and Ferruz that he he draws his inspiration for his paintings from his dreams
Starting point is 00:11:03 He just see things in his dreams and he paints them. So you look at his many, many very disturbing paintings and as well as being disturbing, they sort of remind you of things that you've seen. Margo is immediately reminded of the vision she saw very recently of a man feverishly scratching and painting in an attic in the Black Mountain and Vaughn remembers the cave drawings from his vision. All of you make sanity checks in the kitchen.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Meanwhile Carter and Bertha are trying to discuss perhaps Jackson Elias's interest in Miles. She's being a little cagey about remembering him and Carter then spots what appears to be an inhuman shadow that Bertha is casting on the floor behind her and then watches in horror as she transforms into a lizard creature. Bertha comes back up to the garret with the tea without Carter. She says, oh he needed to get some fresh air he was feeling a little lightheaded. Farouz then pretends to spill her tea and uses it as an excuse to explore the house or use the bathroom. While exploring the kitchen, Feyrouz finds stairs leading down into the basement.
Starting point is 00:12:14 She descends into the basement after not seeing Carter outside, and Bertha said he went out there. She doesn't see him out there. She goes down the stairs. She discovers a hidden room in the basement and takes a couple of jars off the walls filled with odd substances. Then she finds a tub with like a piece of plywood
Starting point is 00:12:32 or a cement, I can't remember what was on top of it. She lifts that off and inside finds the butchered remains and severed head of a woman. Back in the garret, Vaughn and Margo now witness Bertha's transformation into this lizardy snake creature and a fight ensues where yet again the heroes barely survive. Although now you are all a little worse for the wear, some of you physically, some of you mentally. And Miles Shipley is still alive. He's on the ground sort of, uh, shaking.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Um, and, and, you know, begging for his life. Uh, please, please, please don't kill me. Please, please. I should, you know, no, no, you've, you've saved me. You've saved me. If anything, you've saved me. Please don't kill me. What do you doing?
Starting point is 00:13:27 I feel like Margo is keeled over at this point and spitting up blood. She's half her hip points down after this. Got socked a couple times. Yeah. We're not trying to kill you, just trying to figure out what on earth is happening. Have you ever seen, as she says to Miles, have you seen this before? It... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... it... I didn't mean to hurt anyone. I didn't mean to hurt anyone. She it gave me no choice.
Starting point is 00:14:31 I think Vaughn is just like holding his temples like leaning against a wall. Shipley I felt her in my mind. I felt her in my mind. When when when? For God's sake man, do you even have a mother? My mother passed a long time ago. I was just did things to me and drugged me and then made me go out and find things for it to eat. And then it took the form of this birther and I just I just did what I was told. You have to understand. I just did what I was told. I just did what I was told. So that thing in the tub, was that what you brought?
Starting point is 00:15:32 Yes. It would get hungry. It would get hungry from time to time. And so I would just go out and bring it back food. That was a prostitute that I met last week. A few days ago. I can't remember. They were the ones that I would usually bring home to it. Margot spits a little bit of blood in his general direction and is like so let me get this straight. It gave you inspiration for the paintings and you were no longer struggling But what did you give it's outside of? food
Starting point is 00:16:17 That was it. That was the deal, but it was against my will The drug the drug made me do it the creature made me do it but now you freed me and now now you must know that I was innocent and then that I should just I should be I should be free and you're looking at this guy you realize people I didn't do it I didn't I just brought them here they hated the killing they did the dismembering and the eating. I think. Oh, all right, all right. Carter this whole time has just been like chewing his nails and looking at Margo the whole time.
Starting point is 00:16:54 And then just been like, come here, come here, come here. Let me, I can fix this. I can fix this. Walks over holding her side. Yeah. Come here. I think it opens up again a little bit. I can fix this. Walks over holding her side. Yeah. Come here. I think it opens up again a little bit. Oh, that's not what I was expecting. Yeah, no, I can do this. This is fine.
Starting point is 00:17:13 I'm going to first aid you. Please don't mess it up. Watch this. I'm not some guy that brings back street walkers. I'm a first aid connoisseur. Here we go. I'm going to roll this. Actuallyur. Here we go. I'm gonna roll this. Actually, before I roll this,
Starting point is 00:17:26 I feel like I should roll to increase my luck. Is that possible? Can we do it? Oh yes, we should do that. Oh, I almost forgot about that. Yeah, we should do a, see if your luck improves. As always, this is a roll that you wanna fail.
Starting point is 00:17:45 And if you do, you will get a D10 to add to your luck. Woo! Woohoo! All right, roll 20. I failed. That's shit. Good for you. Two points.
Starting point is 00:17:55 Hard success for me, no more luck. Yeah. Okay. I got three points of luck. Three points of luck, all right. Great, so what are you trying to do there, Carter? I'm trying to first aid Margo. I want to see, so what really got wounded was when she was getting repeatedly punched in the gut,
Starting point is 00:18:12 is that her stitches opened up from being held by one monster being punched by another. Yeah, that's right, her stitches opened up. All right, yeah, so a successful first aid roll here would give her back one hit point, and then she would heal one naturally Well, she didn't take a major wound. You don't have to worry about anything else and obviously she's not unconscious but See what you can get if anybody else has first aid you can all roll and one success works But obviously the more rolled you get the more chance you have of fumbling. Yeah, I'll try Look over. I was one point away from getting a major wound. Oh dear. Oh
Starting point is 00:18:45 Yeah, that's no good. I rolled a two under 34, motherfuckers. Whoa. Sorry. I don't know if that actually doesn't matter, right? I just, the success is what matters. That's an extreme success. So you do it with ease, you're able to.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Okay, let me just grab this. I'll just go ahead and grab this string. Oh, be careful. I know, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. Uh, ew. And then just sort of give it a little tight tight and a little like I wish a shoelace. Yeah It seems to help Wow, okay. All right great. Okay. What did I miss? What does fucker do? Good show to you. Yes. Good show to me. Yes. Yes You're a very sick man shippley um I've seen things Good show, Tealing House. Good show, Tealing House, yes. Their people ruled the earth. The Serpent People. Yes.
Starting point is 00:19:45 I saw their assault cities. I... I visited their temples. I watched their... their blood rites. I witnessed their... gory wars. And then I painted what I saw.
Starting point is 00:20:01 Picture actor. Picture of the hellish... sights that my mind beheld. And all of a sudden I was taken seriously. Maybe I am to blame. Maybe there was no Sathasa. The drug. The drug made me do it. Where is this drug now? Where did... where did... where did Sethosa, as you call her, keep it? He just reaches in his pants and just throws keys under the floor. He goes, my room... my room... be careful. Once you take it, there's no going back. You're not really painting a good picture here of wanting to do this drug to be honest. Yes. I shouldn't think I'd like to
Starting point is 00:20:51 but you earlier you described your paintings as the as the subject of your dreams now you're saying you're This is what What it showed you our world was in the past They told me to say dreams, but it was all too real. Sathasa was a high sorcerer, and this drug, although it felt as if it was just my mind traveling back there. I just felt like I was there. I felt like I could touch and smell and see these sights in the time before, a time that I did not know existed until I traveled there.
Starting point is 00:21:40 If you do, try it. Just don't use all of it because I need it. I need it. I need it. I need to go back there. I need to go back and see. Does he seem addicted to it? Yeah, definitely. Oh.
Starting point is 00:21:57 Shipley, you're a sick man, I said. They say, whoever or whatever this thing is has got its hooks in you. It's got its its claws in into me not into my flesh but into my mind so I I am I'm inclined to I Know from Dire experience a little of what you've you've had but you you can't go back there
Starting point is 00:22:18 You can possibly take this drug again. You need help man Yes This is a tricky thing, right? Because you're here following up on this lead that Jackson allies something he was interested in. And now you've uncovered a murderer that's also linked to some otherworldly shit. Not like you can go strolling into Scotland Yard with this. I'm curious what the plan is here. And then obviously you've got a house to explore. This guy is beyond gone.
Starting point is 00:22:50 He needs a sanitarium. Right. But he also is responsible for the death of some ladies of the night. Maybe some men of the night. I don't know if he discriminates necessarily. Telling Haste, I'll add, was taken downstairs in a trance. Like, you were next, buddy.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Like, is this? Yeah, wait a minute. God damn it. Hold on. Were we gonna be fed to Zahas? I got a question for this guy before we talk grand strategies. So, first of all, did I miss it?
Starting point is 00:23:24 Were you born from an egg did I miss what did you guys cover the the general how this works with the your mother it wasn't my mother that was your mother so I was focused on the serpent people call I got it okay I just mark all this to understand Margo is bleeding out no one else fucking did a very good job with helping me so listen now that listen, now that we've covered that, because that was question number one. Question number two, she looked like this the whole time or she can change into other human beings? Like, was she tied to just this one? Look, my question is, are there more of these things and can they look like anything all the time? Can they shift human form to different types of humans or what?
Starting point is 00:24:04 They could look like anything. When I met Sathasa, he was a man. At least that's what he looked like. And he swore that he could show me things to paint, which no artist could ever capture. I was in my cups, and so I trusted him. He had a silver tongue. And then... I saw his true form.
Starting point is 00:24:26 And he went into my mind. And made me... Made me take that medicine. And then I needed it. And then he came up with the idea to be my mother. Birth, yeah, right, okay. Okay, yeah, alright, this all sounds about right. But it could take many forms. I never saw another one. Except what I saw when I went back.
Starting point is 00:24:44 There were many. they ruled the world they ruled this world in the time before the gods yes yes what was in those jaws in the basement weren't there like wasn't there like a wall of jars I stole one you. You were in the basement. That's what she uses to make the drug. I hope you didn't destroy them. I need that. I need that. I think I know how to replicate the recipe. I could, I could make more. I could make more and then there could be enough for all of us. For all of us. Maybe we could, we could travel back and never, and never return. And then then I wouldn't be guilty of the crime of associating with this sorcerer.
Starting point is 00:25:28 Yes, yes, that is what we'll do. We'll all take the drug and we'll go back. I don't think taking any more of this drug is going to make you any less responsible for what's happened already. Wasn't he kind of standing in front of a door in the attic? Yeah, there was a door up in it at one point
Starting point is 00:25:46 Yes, if we go back to our VTT, you'll see that in the garrote there is a single door that is unguarded And he says you say that aloud or you just talk about well, I'm thinking like I Feel like we want to explore the whole house, but I also don't want to leave him alone. Maybe like lock him up here while we explore the rest of the house, but also up in the attic there is that door he was saying. He goes with us, but we have firearms. Yeah. No funny business.
Starting point is 00:26:20 So I don't feel comfortable leaving him anywhere. Yeah. Yeah. So I lean. I'll explore the space, I'll just sit here. I lean to Carter and I'm like, is that door? He was trying to block it before. We should see what's in there before we leave this room. Mm-hmm, yeah, we should check.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Maybe take him with us. Check it out. Oh, I should mention really quickly, while I was downstairs, there was a tub with remains inside of said, this creature that was eating, but then also there's a wall of said and drugs. Oh. Just to catch you up over, I know everybody was busy.
Starting point is 00:26:59 I know, somehow I knew that, even though I forgot that you never told us that. It said people and drugs. Got it. Yes. Yeah, let it yes yeah well that's one room down and that's y'all want to see it I'm good I don't terribly wish to see what you've seen but I suppose we should um see where these keys lead us yes come on shippley step lively you're coming with us. Yeah, who's got the piece? I point my gun over, like, no funny business. All right.
Starting point is 00:27:28 I'm outnumbered. You've saved me. You've saved me. I have no interest in doing you any harm, and I'm sorry. I just, she was, they, he, we're trying to separate you to perhaps Have food for the weeks to come then I wouldn't have had to go out and bring more veterans back It's all over now Shipley. It's all over now. You're a real saint I was doing what I was told by my mother by Siddhartha. I was just doing what I was told So you go upstairs with this crazy person and he watches you sort of
Starting point is 00:28:10 approach that door and he's like you you don't want to go in there I'm not allowed to open it unless she says. What's in there? She's no longer alive so I don't think we need to. It's it's it, it's, it's, it's the big one. That's what I was, I was told to call it the big, the big painting, the one that was really going to make waves, but it really wasn't for the public, it was for, um, for them. It's called the Serpent's Altar. It's unfinished, but... When finished, it's a gateway to there. That's why they want you to paint these paintings.
Starting point is 00:29:03 But we must see it. It's not it's not ready. It's not ready. And sometimes it's hard to look at. But you do so at your own risk. Carter's going to stare at the floor as we walk into this room. Margot wants to look at it um I think Vaughn will sort of linger with Shipley and almost like whispering to him
Starting point is 00:29:37 You've undergone a terrible ordeal you've been the subject of Demonic influence They've attempted to pervert your spirit and turn you from the path of good. There is hope for you yet. There is salvation yet. You're not responsible entirely for your actions. The will was not altogether aligned with the demonic force that breathed its will into yours, and the will will see to it that you receive the help that you so, you so drastically need." He leans in really close. He's like, You're not gonna eat me, are you?
Starting point is 00:30:19 No, no, no, man. And Vaughn will kind of awkward hug. No, no, no, you're safe now. He leans away from you, just weeps like a baby. You fiddle with the keys and find the one that opens this door, the garret. Marco, yeah, when you look at this painting, if I seem odd at any point, I give you permission to slap me as hard as you can
Starting point is 00:30:52 across the face. You know what, same, make sure it's the face, so not the side, and not too hard. Really feels like an evergreen statement with this crew. Just my scene. I feel like whatever it is, we will be able to handle it. I'm looking at the floor. I suggest everyone else look at this painting via the floor. Right. You open the door and you see a dirty sheet covering an easel with a canvas atop it and
Starting point is 00:31:36 nothing else. Tell me everything guys, is it horrible? What does it look like? There's a sheet over it. I can picture it. I'm going to pull this off so make sure you don't look, no matter how much we scream. Okay, all right. Just for the record, I'm not going to slap one of you guys.
Starting point is 00:31:53 I feel like that would be not very polite. I would rather take a slap in the face than whatever horrors this thing might do. Okay, well, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. All right. that take a slap in the face and whatever horrors this thing might do, but. Okay, well we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. All right. All right, here we go, ready? Ready. One, two, three. She pulls off the, the tree. Dirty old sheet?
Starting point is 00:32:18 Yeah. You pull the dirty old sheet off and you do see a painting that is not finished. However, perhaps the reason for that is that it is far more ridiculous than any of the other paintings that you've seen of his. It is a landscape portrait that looks like it's been worked on for years. It is so heavily detailed but it like
Starting point is 00:32:48 is it finished on the outside like they're working from the inside out and you see what looks like a swampy area completely infested with serpents. But the serpents are anthropomorphic like this Sathasa. Some are dressed in elegant robes. I believe one of the paintings you saw had like one of a serpent person in a robe while some are naked. There is a small island in the center of this swamp upon which stands a single stone altar and all sorts of flora surrounding the scene that you have never seen, like it defies human comprehension. It's not like, oh, maybe that's like a tree of some sort. It's like, it's, you have no idea what's going on.
Starting point is 00:33:55 Who's looking? Is it just Margo and Feyrouz? Yeah. I have my, just like a journal out to write jot down any details, important details I would think were important for in this painting. Okay, you're just kind of like looking and maybe just stream of consciousness writing
Starting point is 00:34:18 and Margot, I don't know if you're just taking it in or if you've got your sketchbook out or whatever, but both of you, as you're're watching it you just start to hear like it's like sounds of bugs perhaps right in your ear and then you start to feel this like It's like vibration within your body this like like your whole body is shaking from within And you start smelling That reptile smell all over again, but it's much more intense and you smell mud and sulfur and and you smell mud and sulfur and you kind of like try to maybe shake yourself out of it, but suddenly you feel like you're within the painting, but then you blink again and you're
Starting point is 00:35:14 standing there looking at it and then you feel like you're back within it and then you're back outside looking and then suddenly there's this overpowering feeling of something standing behind the easel like this tall black figure that seems to loom out to grab you and pull you into the painting. I need a sanity roll. Oh, here we go. Oh man. Okay.
Starting point is 00:35:45 I got a 45 under 95. Okay. You are so insane. The two people that should be looking at this painting right now. I don't know why. I really wanna chip away at that. I know, I got a regular success. Okay, all right, so you don't lose any sanity.
Starting point is 00:36:01 However, Carter, if you've been asking them, like, what do you see, what do you see? You just keep asking and there's no response until you realize they're in a trance-like state. Maybe you need to shake them out of it or punch them, whatever Faber is suggesting. Hold on, I've got to. Yeah, Carter's just sort of like,
Starting point is 00:36:19 well, I'll tell you what, this floor is filthy. This thing hasn't been swept in weeks Jesus Christ ladies ladies and Carter sort of like is Putting his back so that he doesn't have to look at the painting But it's sort of so that he can look at them without seeing it And to seize what just sees them just sees them staring at it kind of like Ghostbusters 2 Like oh, yeah, some Vigo shit. Yeah, just guys, girls, and starts
Starting point is 00:36:50 like doing snippy snaps in their face. Hey, hey, Faerus. What happens? Tell me everything. If you physically touch them, they snap out of it. OK, yeah, so there's some light. Now, I'm doing this just lightly poking shoulders. Pokey poke.
Starting point is 00:37:08 Once you physically touch them, those hands that are coming out to get you, they look like long bony black fingers, just pulled back and you're just staring at a unfinished picture. What is going on? What is happening? Did you see that? It smells rich in there.
Starting point is 00:37:24 In there? What do you mean in there? I think that's the painting must almost be done. Oh, no that was um that was And she just starts like dry heaving like He being like, Oh, I'm sure it's nothing to this floor. I told you it was unfinished. Please don't judge it. I'll finish it. I'll get to finishing it.
Starting point is 00:37:50 And then we should play. I think you should. We can all walk through. Oh, no, thank you. No. Also, I think that there was someone there assisting us. We didn't need to walk through. We were about to be pulled through.
Starting point is 00:38:05 We can't. Let's put this sheet back over it. How about this I got a couple ideas Margo what you want to take a picture of this thing just so we got a you got your camera. Oh yes I have my camera. I try to take a picture of it really quick without getting sucked into it again like if you see me go out so it's touch me again. All right you take a picture of it really quick without getting sucked into it again like if you see me go out so it's touch me again all right you take a picture of it all right then what I think we should do is burn it right now we can't afford did you see
Starting point is 00:38:36 what that thing just did to us no let's just slash it up, burn it, whatever the fuck, it's done, this guy's not finishing this. Agreed. Maybe you wanna do, if you're gonna do anything to it, maybe you don't want him to see it, knowing what his mental state is. I might, being completely aligned with this way of thinking, Vaughn, like, yes.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Come, Shipley, let's get you out into the open air. I think the The darkness and must in this place has done you no good You know, you need some vigor man, and um, you'll start to lead him away from the door while looking back at you like destroy it He's just like everyone's a critic He's just like everyone's a critic Yes, I know it's terrible when people that don't understand the artistic temperament Alright so you take him out and
Starting point is 00:39:41 You guys just destroy the painting and with ease it doesn't like fight you back arms Don't grow out of it and punch you it bummer. It is destroyed, but you do feel like Every strange now obviously Carter you didn't experience what Margo and faerus experienced, but you've been around weird Cthulhu me those stuff enough to like just feel its power So you destroy the painting tear it to shreds burn it whatever you want to do with it All those other paintings are there do you want to destroy all of the paintings I would like to destroy those paintings but here's the thought that I just had is that he sold paintings like this to others how do we how do we get a hold of how do we get any knowledge of sales, because even if we do destroy all of these paintings,
Starting point is 00:40:27 they still exist. Others, that this may continue. I wonder if every painting is like a portal, or if it was just a way for him to make money, to continue supporting the lizard. Is there like any sort of role I can make on the paintings to see if there's anything else? Well, we looked at them before, right? Nothing happened. Yeah, they all provoke sanity rolls. I mean, you guys are still growing in your Cthulhu mythos skill. So those are very hard checks.
Starting point is 00:41:00 I think probably the highest among you is a three, a five someone. So very, very low chance. What about in a cult role? You could certainly do in a cult role, yeah. Right. Now I failed. Like big fail. Like I can't spend anything to make this. I'll just try. Yeah. I might try on the way out if that's okay.
Starting point is 00:41:26 Yeah. Ah curses, me too. Maybe when we go into his room. Maybe he has a leisure of. It's worth looking into, I think. You can see those paintings out of the corner of your eye, whether you go back to them and really inspect them. Carter, you really didn't have a chance to,
Starting point is 00:41:48 and you probably don't want to. But you think to yourself that like, it made you kind of lose yourself for a moment, right? So if someone else purchased it, it probably did that to them as well. Does repeated exposure kind of eat away at the mind of the owner of these paintings? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:42:12 Is it possible that it's a portal? That's also possible as well. I think what the most disturbing part is is how that it was reminiscent of visions that you have had as of late or ever since your meeting in Peru. Also that feeling you had, Margot and Faeruz, when that figure was coming out, as you're settling back in, the one thing that it reminds you of is that moment when Larkin, the sort of that voice came out of him, that feeling that you're being
Starting point is 00:42:47 like watched by something powerful. That's that lingering feeling you have. The same thing when that thing just reached out at you. If what Miles said was true about him needing this drug to have these visions and to paint these paintings and I think we definitely need to destroy those bottles in the basement. I took one because I didn't know what it was but now knowing what it does I don't think this is safe. Did he say the stuff that was down there was just the stuff that she used to make the drug
Starting point is 00:43:26 and that we have not actually seen the final version? He said the drug was in his room, right? Yeah. But we should destroy the ingredients too. I don't think that hurts. Yeah, like maybe Sathasa was using that as a lab as well, you know, because you see, you saw a bunch of other things around the jars And you didn't recognize a lot of it. So it must have been like ingredients Alright so head down to his room and you have keys
Starting point is 00:43:56 So, let's see here. Oh, yeah, I can feel it on the map to do do do do do do so the keys to his room to do to do to do to do so the keys to his room but it up to do to do to do to do it's a mess in here he needs to do laundry he's like this is what my bloomer's are dirty find my notes here. All right, so. Do, do, do, do, do. Just posters of Lamborghinis. Right. Do you come with a car? All right, upper floor. Look at how much shin that woman is showing.
Starting point is 00:44:39 I can say, you know, just to kind of move things along, if you open the other doors on this floor, they're just all rooms that are empty except for Shipley's room. They're just dusty with very scant furnishings. They look like they haven't been used in a long time. That fourth bedroom down the bottom is where Shipley has been staying. You see bedclothes and all sorts of shit lying on the floor. There's a bed a wardrobe a dressing stand and a wall closet What do you want to do?
Starting point is 00:45:14 Let's ransack this room and search it Give me some spot-hidden rolls I got a 34 under Give me some spot hidden rolls. Let's see. Spot hidden, where are you? I got a 34 under 69. Nice. Ooh, it's a hard. Ooh, that is a hard. It's hard.
Starting point is 00:45:36 I got a regular. It's a hard 69. All right, so Margo. You guys are in there just, obviously one of you is still keeping an eye on Miles or you're taking turns. And Margo, you're in the closet looking around and you see there's a hat box kind of like on a shelf and you move the hat box to the side and behind that is a lacquered box, you open it up, and there's a syringe, a single syringe, sitting in it.
Starting point is 00:46:09 And it's full of a greenish colored liquid. And you can see that the syringe has been used so often. There's like a line of green, sort of embedded, like for a specific dosage. It's been used so often. And if Miles is there, he's like, but be careful with that, be careful with that. I'm gonna need that, I'm gonna need that.
Starting point is 00:46:35 This is plenty though, there's plenty we can all share. Yes, yes, of course, you're playing. Is this, is this right here? She still remembers he freshly punched her in her face like an hour ago Um, I don't know everyone what should we do with this Maybe we flush it down the old Lou Yeah, I mean unless there's anything to like, learn from it, which I'm not sure like what we would, I feel like we'd want to dispose of this stuff.
Starting point is 00:47:12 But what would be the best way do you think? Like there's no reason to keep it right? Unless you wanted to. Unless you wanted a party. There was a chemical, if there was some sort of chemical property that could send the mind backward, forward in time. I confess, the Inquisitor Far to me is rather intrigued. Do you think there's someone we could take it to to have it analyzed? I don't know if it's safe in anybody's hands at this point, but I'm willing to entertain any options. I mean, I feel like we should keep at least a vial of it, just to add to our collection
Starting point is 00:47:52 of mysterious liquids. I mean, because I took this, so I should hold up the jar. So I don't blame you for wanting to know what it is. Yes. Well, let's just have it just in case. In case we needed to convince somebody that we're on their team. Or at least have evidence of what we saw today.
Starting point is 00:48:11 Because how else are we going to... Who are we going to put in a madhouse if we... Yeah. Everything else, let's fucking trash it. Let's destroy it. Yeah. Let's somehow take a vial of it without the syringe. Yeah, let's not poke ourselves with this.
Starting point is 00:48:29 Yeah. There's doses and you could just destroy the rest. You know, I've always been so conzy. Yeah. Carter, you got your jacket full of like, It's stuff out of my perfumery? Yeah. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:48:43 All right. I'll put one next to- You should have like a little bottle, right? Just, yeah, I gotta make sure I remember. It's not the CK-1. full of like Yeah, I gotta make sure I remember It's not the ck1. It's the lizard hallucinogen time travel juice show number five with little bit of us that there Just strips from magazines that he's torn out and stuck In terms of what else is here, you know, you do do have, not all of you went to the basement to look around.
Starting point is 00:49:08 So there are those jars and there are ingredients down there. Like if any of you had chemistry or some kind of science skills, you could try to analyze that. Then the only other thing you're really gonna deal with is the fact that there is a dismembered body. Dead body down there.
Starting point is 00:49:22 Down there. And the body of the lizard creature. Yeah, there's a creature. Burn the house with miles in it and call it a day. Yeah. Yeah, no, no, this is really, really tricky. Like literally just arrived in England. Least of your worries with sneaking shotguns in.
Starting point is 00:49:40 Now you've got a murder crime scene. Yes. Perhaps we all break for the break for the hills. Get Mr. Shipley to a to a sanitarium or some residence where he can get the help he so richly needs. And then perhaps Scotland Yard receives an anonymous tip about what's been seen in this place. Is that like a passages or like a rehab? You know, so I was thinking about this when we were talking to him.
Starting point is 00:50:06 Her like you know so sorry about this. I was thinking about this when we were talking to him. You know we've got a couple different articles That we've seen we got here about like Beast attacks or whatever there was something in Scotland Yes, and there was something in them. I just looked at it like the Midlands or something like that which I'm assuming is not Scotland That's like halfway between Is that lesser Edale? I don't know for some reason I just assume Ross knows. Uh, I mean it is... I think the Midlands are... Yeah, they're in the middle of England.
Starting point is 00:50:33 Okay, this is context clues. So, I just don't know if like... I would hope... that's a weird thing to say. That those monsters are these lizard people, otherwise we've got other monsters to deal with too. So I don't know if it's worth reporting to the people that wrote the article. Like, we think we found a monster that could, you know, like, there's that angle. Maybe we keep this information to ourselves for the time being until we have any better idea of what to do with it. Miles seems unhinged, but if we just leave
Starting point is 00:51:14 and let it be sorted out as it would be, he's crazy, he may have killed things. I think, yeah. He's out of drugs. Smash all his drugs and leave him with his lizard matron. Figure it out. That's a good punishment. I think, I hate to say, I mean, I think that's our best option at the moment.
Starting point is 00:51:41 If we entangle ourselves in this or tell the wrong person We might be putting ourselves in in harm's way. I mean even more so than we already are But if before we leave so he forgets that we're here we give him some We destroy him some. Oh we juice him. To continue painting? Why don't you just start painting? We'd destroy his paintings. Margot's going full like audition. Is Vaughn part of this conversation because I've like I've got him outside maybe. It'd be hilarious if he's there listening to our debate. Because if Vaughn is hearing this then he's he has thoughts. I'm sure Vaughn is gonna be privy to the final decision They're not gonna just come out and be like, we took care of it
Starting point is 00:52:30 It's just if we leave he'll tell people that for we were here Like how do we leave without also like erasing the fact that we've been here, sort of? Well, I mean, it's... First of all, nobody really knows who we are. Two, this is the... I hate to say it, but he's not a very... It'd be hard for him to believe anything with... anybody talking about lizard people and the like. But we should probably get rid of the lizard person though if we're going that route.
Starting point is 00:53:14 I mean maybe just dropping them off at a home. We light everything on fire. It just feels like the more we can delay other lizard people finding out details about us from him, the better. So if we tuck him away at some loony bin, then maybe it'll prolong that from happening. Right. But that would require telling said sanitarium something about him. I'm here with, I kind of agree with Margo. I think we should just destroy what we can.
Starting point is 00:53:53 Even his paint supplies everything. Because we don't want him just like... Being happy. Yeah, he's getting in trouble. And just leaving. Have you thinking fire pits for the lizard body or? There is a tub. We could just throw the lizard in the tub
Starting point is 00:54:15 with whoever else's unfortunate body is down there. And someone will put two and two together. They'll be like, oh, this dismembered body was clearly because of this dead lizard person. Clearly this lizard person killed this gross face. Case closed, daddy. Fire to die. Okay.
Starting point is 00:54:31 Yeah, let's do that. Right. Where do we start? Should we just finish up in here? Continue, I mean, we need to continue searching all the other rooms regardless. Well, Troy said the rest of this is just kind of... Yeah, I'm kind of hand waving the rest of it, you know, downstairs.
Starting point is 00:54:49 Did anyone have chemistry or any type of science? Is that even a thing? Basically, there's science and your science could be specific chemistry, it could be pharmacy, it could be biology, but I don't think that's in any of your backgrounds. Nope. No sciences. Yeah, it's a weird mix. But if that's I don't think that's in any of your no Yeah, it's a weird it's a weird mix I mean there's and remember there was also Mystic symbols all over the walls
Starting point is 00:55:19 And and the jars with dark substances you now realize or were connected to this drug And of course the tub was covered in a large sheet of metal. But you see all of these ingredients. It looks like there's like every color of the rainbow, liquids and then like fossils and shit. Like that were being ground down to be added into this. It's just, it's other worldly. And the symbols are the symbols, the recipe, like it's crazy. Could I do an occ call roll on this and maybe being like mmm. Yes
Starting point is 00:55:49 Lizards tooth that's an ingredient for this thing that yeah I just happened to know if anything a car roll will let you know if it's anything That like you've ever and you like even slightly recognized from I have newt I've heard of this Except I failed, again. Yeah, I mean, you just look at it, and hearing what he's saying, if his mind was transported millennia back to a time when serpents ruled the earth,
Starting point is 00:56:14 maybe these are symbols, this is like a pre-civilization language. Okay, so let's clean this up here a little bit. So we've got Yvonne in the hallway with I think I'm outside fully outside like trying to apply him with a cigarette and We're destroying his painting stuff Yeah, I do remember from last episode that when I was fear seeing though these symbols and whatever when I first went into the basement I did write some of these down. Yeah, I think you etched them or-
Starting point is 00:56:48 Take a rubbing. So maybe we put a pin in that for later. Season five, when your Cthulhu Mitho score is 50 and your max sanity is 42, you build it. Then that'll learn them. I think Vaughn would live for a 42. Oh, we'll see. Okay, so they're outside. We are smashing vials. We're smashing jars of stuff. I would imagine this because he's outside. He would freak the fuck out. Okay. Right.
Starting point is 00:57:22 You guys have been warned about the body. So I'm not gonna make you roll a sanity roll cause it's not easy. That was gonna be my next. Yeah, it's not really a surprise. I mean, obviously it's jarring, but at this point you've seen a lot of dead bodies. We went through a pit of bodies
Starting point is 00:57:34 after like three days of knowing each other. That initial like, oh God, it's a decapitated body. But it is pretty eerie. There's just this like, scantily clad dismembered body and the woman's head is severed his eyes are open just here it's just like at the end of clue when they're just shuffling from room to room and they just see like another dead
Starting point is 00:57:53 body and then they just silently move to the next one another dead body and they're just like used to it so what is your plan? Are you going to just try and like dissolve the body of the serpent and the victim or are you just going to chop it up and leave it in there and hopefully it just looks like an animal? Just cover it back up. Why do we have to chop it up? It never happened. It's just a giant doormat that we're sweeping a corpse under. The tub had a covering. We'll just cover it right back up
Starting point is 00:58:25 and just whistle our way out of that tub. Light a Yankee candle and get the fuck out. Metal sheet. Okay. And then Miles, you're gonna bring Miles to a sanitarium or you're gonna like OD him here? If that plan is even so much as like... We destroyed everything except the way up.
Starting point is 00:58:48 I didn't mean to do too much. I was just saying... Vaughn is a Christian. Yes. And aside from whatever, it hardly fulfills the message of the Beatitudes to leave one of the least of our brothers here to his... to suffering and death. There was a time when my wits were rather loosed, as you recall, but you did not abandon me to my fate.
Starting point is 00:59:13 But, uh... Yeah, but you're cool. You're my friend. Granted, granted, granted, but... Also, an asylum... I mean, these days, asylums are not great places. Oh, Batman, yeah. A big metal box on his head. Well, really, we're not full 18th century Bedlam here.
Starting point is 00:59:31 Oh, right, right. But, I mean, certainly, he may, I mean, he may be lobotomized or something, but this man has been through, been through something that I fear as though I've experienced only a fraction of. But yes, to a sanitarium. Let us leave him in another's care. Should we bring him there or make a call like I don't think we want anyone around here Convince him do we have to do some kind of like hey, you're free now buddy. Why don't you come with us?
Starting point is 01:00:15 Oh, this is a restaurant. This is an insane asylum get him in a cab and take him to a hospital. Yeah into a hospital. Yeah. All right. All right. So let's just, we'll say you do convince him and he doesn't take much convincing. It's almost like he was taking orders from Sathasa and now he's taking orders from you. He was under some sort of spell beyond this drug where, you know, his master, he listened to his master and it's almost like you are the new masters
Starting point is 01:00:46 And so he goes with you. Maybe you apply him with promises of more of this Drug or whatever and he's just maybe in the in the back of the car Looking and wincing at the light And at the light and you pull up in front of a local asylum. Yeah, I mean you find a place. I mean you probably know a good place to bring him and you know I don't want to get into the weeds too much with this conversation. I think it's pretty clear when you bring him in.
Starting point is 01:01:25 But I am curious what your, what your sort of, what do you say? I think- I don't want to, we don't need to play the whole thing out, but it's like, this is my cousin. Definitely not tell them anything of our own personal experience. Absolutely not. This is an indigenous character that we've, that we were accosted by. He's clearly in need of some terrible,
Starting point is 01:01:46 he's clearly experienced something terrible and in need of some drastic sedation and mental aid. He's addicted to something coming down from it. I like this, okay. This is a good play. Okay, and for the sake of argument, I'm gonna say they don't ask too many questions. It's pretty clear they can smell.
Starting point is 01:02:07 He just smells terrible and he's not looking right and maybe he starts sparting off some of the same stuff that he was saying to you about the past and the lizard and mother and they're like, all right, just this way. Thank you so much. A sad case, a sad case, yes. Well, thank you. You are quite kind, and we'll say it's like a nun. It was quite kind of you to bring this young man in. We'll be sure to give him the care that he needs.
Starting point is 01:02:38 And do you wish to be kept in contact with about his care? Yes. Do you wish to be kept in contact with about his care? Yes. Wouldn't hurt to know if something crazy happened. Certainly. If he takes a turn for the better or I dare say a turn for the worse, then you can find us, contact us at this number. Wonderful. Thank you. God bless you all. Thank you, sister. You leave while two bodies lie in that house, sharing a tub.
Starting point is 01:03:17 Just whistling loudly. Broken paintings everywhere. broken paintings everywhere. I had mentioned to this to you guys pre-show that this sort of part of the adventure, unlike before, we had to get through all of America to do a development phase, there may be sort of points throughout the season where there'll be mini development phases.

Starting point is 01:06:06 I'm Yen. And I'm Nat. Comic Sans is a show for people who are new to comics, like me. And people who love them, like me. I make Nat read some of my favorite works in the medium, including Saga, Daredevil, and The Flintstones. And Yen talks about what makes that comic special. We've just launched season 3 of Comic Sans with new episodes every two weeks. And you can binge the first two seasons wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 01:06:30 Alright, we're back. I like this. I like having sort of mid-season, not even mid-season, four episode in chances to improve your investigator because when you wait 20 episodes to do it That's fun and all but like it'd be nice to get an increase to your skills a little more Frequently and so even if this isn't sort of based on what you guys do I may find times to do this from from time to time just to give you a little edge As you get better, I mean the fact that you've survived now multiple combats is crazy I think that the newest version of masks of
Starting point is 01:07:05 Neolitho Tep that we're using kind of toned it down a lot from the original where people were dying like every single session. But still, you guys have been incredibly lucky and it's going to be real sad. And someone gets. Never going to happen. You're never going to have. You live forever. I mean, that would be something that we've chaos I would have to
Starting point is 01:07:28 Memorialize the show if you guys made it through the entire book If they ruse dies you pull up that spell I have of making zombies We'll just convert it to a pulp campaign and now Zombie Fyrus is your actual traveling companion. I had you guys roll during the break your skills to see if you'd improve any of them. So again, the way it works, we call it Cthulhu. Every time you succeed at a skill, you check it and then when it comes time for a development phase, you have a chance to get better in that skill. It shows that you're like, the more you use it, the more chance you have of like bettering
Starting point is 01:08:04 yourself at it. Did you guys improve on any skills significantly? Just one. I got a whole whopping one point added to my brawl. Nice. That was sick. I just added a little to first aid and spot hidden. Okay spot hidden. That's cool. Great and then you're gonna get some rewards for this little sidetrack scenario here for putting an end or a temporary end at least to Sathasa's plans. You each gain 1d6 sanity points. Yes. Oh, Dad needs those.
Starting point is 01:08:37 Come on. You got to just all roll and then decide who gets the six. Now let's see what you get here for that. And then for, you know, saving miles and getting into an asylum, you actually will gain a flat plus two on top of that one D6. Had you chosen, you know- Forcibly overdose him?
Starting point is 01:09:02 Margo's plan, you would have lost some sense. That sounds like we would have lost some sense Sounds like we would have had some fun It's got a death wish for like trying to play the game So then I get to add three points then to my sanity great. Did you roll a one on the d6? I did brutal I didn't roll because I had 95 of 96 sanity. So I just put it to the scamp yourself I didn't roll because I had 95 of 96 sanity, so I just quit it tonight. Scam yourself the one. Yeah, my sanity's all like super high.
Starting point is 01:09:28 Wow, that's great. After adding the five points that I just gained, I now have 37 points of sanity. Wow, I'm glad you got five though, that's great. Later. Yeah. Yeah, so I would assume, man, you guys really, sometimes the first day you arrive in town, you kind of lay low, maybe you get dinner and then just go back to the hotel.
Starting point is 01:09:52 You guys have had a day, I imagine you want to call it a night. Girl, we've had a day. Yeah. And I'm hurt, so I definitely want to lay down, get some tea. Get you another health point. Yeah, if you rest, you'll get another HP back. Let's kind of dig into the conversations that we're having here before bed.
Starting point is 01:10:14 Wait, more importantly, is there a prohibition going on in the UK as well? No, you can drink whatever you want. Bars are open all night. You can have a lukewarm beer anywhere you like. A lukewarm carbonation free beer awaits. Yeah, if you guys wanna maybe, wanna hit the bar. It's just an unspoken thing.
Starting point is 01:10:38 I just wanna make sure we can. I wonder how their Pisco Sours taste. I was thinking the same thing. That'd be very interesting if all of a sudden you're sitting at the bar, you can't help but think like, oh, kind of reminds you of the bar Cordano back in Peru. Maybe one of your orders is Pisco Sour and you're thinking about what lies ahead. You had a couple of leads, the Penu Foundation obviously found a card in Jackson Eliza's apartment or her no it was in wait it was did you find in Jackson's apartment
Starting point is 01:11:11 or did he yeah I think you did about the current director Edward Gavigan of the Pennu Foundation obviously Sir R.B. Pennu was part of the Carlisle expedition so that's kind of a big one worth investigating but then when you went to the scoop you found these articles about you know it came from the fog and then this thing in the Midlands you were talking about that's in a city known as lesser Edale I might be mispronouncing that that's Vaughan would know that's about 170 miles away so that would be a real trip if you wanted to investigate that whereas this thing this artist in Chelsea was just a hop skip and a jump away and then there was the
Starting point is 01:11:51 other article about the Oh, yeah, that was the one it's like a tax in Scotland, right There's a monster shot. Yeah, it was like a cryptid thing. Yeah, the killer beast shot, but still alive. That's the one that's about 170 miles away in Lesser Edale. And then Scotland. It almost had me.
Starting point is 01:12:16 Yeah, the Glasgow resident had an unwelcome encounter with a monster of darkness. So that's pretty far away. But the other one that is. Slaughter continues where we're offered. But the other one that is slaughter continues. Oh, yeah. Offered. Yes.
Starting point is 01:12:26 Someone's killing people. Scotland Yard. That's Scotland Yard. Someone got stabbed in the heart or something. Yeah. So Scotland Yard and the the Penhew Foundation are both here in London. If you were to follow up on this very loose thread in Scotland, that would be a big journey. And then Lesserie Dale would probably be a day's journey away. Also let's not forget a little place called Eagles Grange.
Starting point is 01:12:53 And of course. Eagles Grange, yes. Yes. What do you think, Vaughn? What do you think? If we went over to Eagles Grange, you think you'd maybe feel a little more sane? You know, like being back home? Get a couple extra theoretical points of sanity back. Home has its certain comforts as well as its unforeseen stresses. But yes, we could, there is of course accommodation to be made for all of you if you wish to come to
Starting point is 01:13:20 my family's home. Yeah, I want to eat off of silver plates. To my family's home? Yeah, I want to eat off of silver plates. Uh... I would think that maybe, she says to, uh... Um... Maybe we have that conversation before we make that decision. Yes.
Starting point is 01:13:37 Huh? Yes, of course. Um... But? If you've, assuming you've given a thought to it, um... Yes, I should very much like to, uh... Are we doing this the this in front of everybody? I will respond to it Another time, another time
Starting point is 01:13:49 Fatso, what are they talking about? I mean, they would have to figure out they'd have to find out either way. I'm sorry What's going on? Carter's just drinking another pisco You got hot gas? Well, I mean, I don't want to bring this up I'm comfortable speaking about it to our friends if you are, but if not, then that's entirely up to you. Well, assuming if you're comfortable, Ms. Shebron,
Starting point is 01:14:13 then I suppose I, of course I'm comfortable. I'm starting to get uncomfortable. Spill that British tea. We're getting married. No, just, um, no, I'm just, so we may have to assume a relationship whilst then. But wait, I thought Vaughn, I thought you were, you know. Excuse me?
Starting point is 01:14:49 What Mr. Braun is saying is that we've all grown closer over this time, haven't we? And there are certain expectations on one, but the heart, of course, plays part in these decisions. So much to say that if we are to go to Eagle's Grange, then I have made a proposal to Miss Shebron that if she is so good as to accept it, then we shall not arrive at my home as friends merely, but as fiancees. Oh, I must seize a ring. Oh, yes. Suppose if we go, I will have to yes, well there will be one of those. You proposed to the no ring. Well, I haven't said yes yet.
Starting point is 01:15:51 You... oh. Wait. Hold on. This is great. We're all just like stepping over each other because no one wants to say hello. Margo, I think what's... I think what's going on here is, it's so hot in here. I think what's going on is that, Vaan, Faerûs, it's going to be like a play where you pretend to be something that you're not. Well, you're not pretending very well if you don't have a ring.
Starting point is 01:16:26 That is true. You're gonna need what's called a prop. In a play, we'd call it a prop. So you're gonna need a prop of a ring. Well, seeing as how... I never want you or any of us to assume a life that the world places upon us because it's what they deem to be right. And so as I have no desire to have a relationship forced upon me for the sake of society and I assume that that's exactly what you are trying to avoid. I think that as friends we could have this sort of arrangement and that way know that
Starting point is 01:17:35 you are always free to live the life that you want. And I will be here as a friend to support you. And I as well. That's beautiful! Don't need to ball us. I've had a long day and that was such a cute... Yes, we've all been through a lot. We've got our relationships, if not a yes or a
Starting point is 01:18:07 system mutual support and and friendship is a start that that that That many marriages are not built upon and if we start there, then who knows what affections Might develop. Oh Right just no no exactly no. Exactly, no. The point is, is that the world is what it is, and we now are friends, and I will support you in whatever decisions you make and
Starting point is 01:18:47 If that means Pulling a fast one on your mother Then count me and I should I suppose it'll be fun in that aspect Very well Oh my father's gonna love meeting you. That's gonna be amazing. Did you call and ask permission? Yes, I suppose I'll ask the old boy his, give me his blessing.
Starting point is 01:19:15 Oh no, what if we don't? He'll be so mad. Carter nervously takes a drink, is like, Margo, we should pretend to be a couple too I think that'd be that would be so funny yeah Oh god, my side hairs. You did such a great job earlier. You're making me laugh way too hard. Splitting my sides. That was a corker. I needed that.
Starting point is 01:19:53 You're so funny, Carter. That's what I'm here for, guys. Make a boy laugh. So funny. She pats you on the back. Yep. Good friends. Just like they are's good friends. Just like they are good friends. Yes. Well, here's what I'll say. I'll say that, uh, and then Ross, you know, you came up with the Eagles' Grains, so you tell me,
Starting point is 01:20:15 but I imagine it's in, it's in the countryside outside of London, right? Yeah, I'm thinking it's, it's like Howard's End, you know, it's out, the train ride out of the city and out in the countryside. It's like Howard's End, you know, it's out, the train ride out of the city and out in the countryside. All right, so I would say that, you know, if you ever did want to follow up on that thing in the Midlands, you know, that could be like in the same direction. And maybe that's something you want to do on the weekend so you don't, you know, lose the opportunity for the business hours of these other leads that you have.
Starting point is 01:20:44 I'm going to just arbitrarily say, because we've never really picked it, I brought up a calendar of February 1925. I'm gonna say it's Wednesday, February 4th 1925. And so you've got Thursday and Friday to do business in town and then maybe, maybe it's a little trip on the weekend at Old Eagles Grange. in their ranks who could shed some light onto the nature of that rather bizarre potion Mr. Shipley was so attached to. Yeah, maybe we could find a science book. It'd also be nice to have a day that is more chill. is more chill.
Starting point is 01:21:46 It's terribly chill in the middle of February. I would be very surprised if we got attacked by any serpent people at Scotland Yard. So maybe that would, it's comforting to know that maybe there's a day that we could not face death. I mean, I seem to remember thinking a couple of years ago that we were not gonna get attacked at a university and then something tried to crawl up your nose. So you never know.
Starting point is 01:22:18 We've had bad experiences with police before, but. That is true. But these are British constables, unimpeachable and completely above board. And they don't have guns, they just have sticks, that is true. But these are British constables, unimpeachable and completely above board. And they're gonna have guns, they just have sticks. It's fine. And they ride around on bikes. Right.
Starting point is 01:22:32 They have one big wheel. It's one big wheel on the front. But perhaps there is, um, there is such one among them as, as if what Shipley said is true, then there must have been a series of disappearances in order to feed that beastly thing. All right, so we go to Skaldanyard, or we go to these eggheads? Penhew. Maybe if we go to Penhew's first, we'll have a little... if we gain any more knowledge, then we could follow up on that as well.
Starting point is 01:23:08 That sounds, yeah, that also sounds pretty chill. Rather chill, yes. Clown Margie. Yes. I'm tired of stumbling around in the dark. Some, see if we can let some light break onto all of these questions that we have. Should I bring my shotguns to the Penthew Foundation?
Starting point is 01:23:27 I would say no, but that's the old me. It seems that it comes in handier and handier every day. Yes, I would say that's not going on anywhere. I'll be tucking my 32 into my waistcoat. I don't even know what I have. I got this fucking cleaver from their house. What am I doing? I've got like my long trench coat or whatever.
Starting point is 01:23:45 So like, yeah, I'm bringing my shotgun with me. It's always good to have a shotgun. Best I could do is give you a, I think I have like a pocket knife or a dagger or something like that. If you'd like to link us. I know I didn't have it when we went to that guy's house, but do I still have this cool like dagger from season one?
Starting point is 01:24:03 Did I bring it out with me or is that a custom? Oh yeah, I think you probably. Give me that dagger. That's my cheese knife. I never leave home without Like bejeweled and encrusted It's on the inside pocket with all the other vials Yeah, that should be fine Okay, so pen you foundation in the morning. You know another thing, uh, this may, this was a lot easier in New York where we all had sort of a common, uh, you know, knowledge of the area. There are research locations and libraries throughout London.
Starting point is 01:24:35 If you're ever like before you want to go visit a place or you want to look up on something, uh, you have, there's no internet, but you have the ability to be like, I'm going to go to the London library and, uh, do some research. Um, you know, just, I'm not pointing that to anything you're about to do, but you have the ability to be like, I'm going to go to the London library and do some research. I'm not pointing that to anything you're about to do, but you have that ability throughout the campaign. Don't forget about that. All right. So say you go to bed, each of you with various visions of this transformation of Bertha Shipley into a lizard woman kind of
Starting point is 01:25:07 replaying in your heads, replaying this fight on the stairs, this desperate fight, miles punching away and how you yet again just narrowly escape losing one of your team. Then you wake up the next day, February 5th, 1925, Thursday. It's foggy out, like all of us. And you head over to the Pennu Foundation. Pennu Foundation is in central London on Tottenham Court Road. It still says that right on Edward Gavigan's business card. It's near the intersection of Morwell and Bailey Streets. That is of course north of Oxford Street and west of the British Museum. It is a high Victorian building from the outside of fewer stories and greater ceiling height than the buildings
Starting point is 01:26:06 to either side and altogether grander in scale. A lot of money here, obviously. Kind of cool when you think about Jackson's interest in the Carlyle expedition, you met with Erica Carlyle at the at the fund fundraiser and now you're at the Pennu Foundation. This is like the second big like being really close to someone from the expedition Sir Aubrey Pennu the former director. There's a high iron fence surrounding the building you can see the hours are posted outside 830 a.m. to 530 p.m. Another sign
Starting point is 01:26:49 that looks like it's newer underneath. Maybe it's something that can be changed from time to time, says the Egyptian collection is viewing, is open for viewing from noon to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, so it's closed on the weekends. There is a doorman Monday through Friday, so it's closed on the weekends. There is a doorman standing outside of the only door beyond the fence at the front of the building. And then there's like, the fence goes all the way around the building.
Starting point is 01:27:13 Are you guys approaching from the front? Are you doing any sort of, where are you coming from? Are you guys renting a car, taking cabs everywhere? You wouldn't really walk to here. Yeah, I feel like it's early enough in our journey to where cab sounds like the move yeah okay all right so front door go up to the doorman yeah doorman big guy big mustache hat it's like greetings how may I assist? I was wondering if we might arrange an appointment with the esteemed mr. Gavigan Mr. Gavigan, well, you'll need to speak to mr. Kinry. Just a moment. Please wait here. Actually, please come inside
Starting point is 01:27:57 it's rather cold out today could start raining any minute and he brings you inside to the foyer and It looks like a two-floor building The second floor must be much taller, like higher ceiling heights than this first floor because you saw the outside facade looks like pretty tall building but the first floor here the ceiling height is maybe like eight, ten feet. There's doors running all the way along a corridor and the doorman kind of walks all the way to the back hallway and kind of knocks on a door on the left side, right side of the hallway. After a minute he goes in and then he comes out with a man.
Starting point is 01:28:42 And the man as he's approaching you, he has a small frame, a smallish frame, it's like maybe mid 30s. He's wearing a pinstripe suit. He has a pointed nose, very angular features. And he walks right up and says, Good afternoon. May I help you? You're here to speak to Mr. Gavigan. And the name we were given for this guy was Kettering or something? Good afternoon. May I help you? You're here to speak to Mr. Gavigan. And the name we were given for this guy was Kettering or something? Kinnery, Mr. Kinnery. Kinnery? Yes, K-I-N-N-E-R-Y. You're here to speak to Mr. Gavigan. I'm sorry I don't have an appointment for you. I don't believe. What are your names? Terribly sorry, I was hoping to make one, Mr. Kinnery. I am Vaughn Villiers. These are my associates. Ferew Chabron, the Esmalt-Cart-Tilling House. Hey! Of course, Freyla and Margo Sauer, late of the continent.
Starting point is 01:29:38 We are associates of Miss Erika Carlisle, as well as old friends of Mr. Jackson Elias. Jackson Elias? I believe he had an appointment with Mr. Gavigan just a few months back. You're associates of his. Yes, indeed. I'm sorry, but have you heard any news about Mr. Elias since that time? As a matter of fact, I have, and the only reason it drew my attention is because I had set up the appointment between him and Mr. Caffigan. He was only here one time. A terrible thing. You're friends of his and miss Carlisle Just so we've intimate associates of of mr. Elias and
Starting point is 01:30:32 acquaintances of this car But yes, if you if you met mr. Elias then we we have traveled with him all corresponded with him and Hoping to get to get our hands around the work that he was undertaking and seeking your foundation's assistance to complete. Um, well, I imagine Mr. Gavigan would be open to speaking with you. I'd have to check his schedule, but I believe he has an opening tomorrow at 2 p.m. If that works for you, I can go and see if that holds up and put you in the book That would be ever so kind of you
Starting point is 01:31:15 And it was He pulls out like a little pad of paper. He said it was Vaughan Villiers, how do you spell that? V-I-L-L-I-E-I-S. Okay, and Carter? Tillinghast? Like it sounds. Tillinghast, yes, H-A-S-T.
Starting point is 01:31:33 Spells it, yes. I think so. Madam, what was your name? He looks at you, Faeruz. Faeruz Gibran, F-A-I-R-U-Z, G-I-B-R-A-N. Faeruz, if you'd come here on your own, I assumed you would be looking at the Egyptian collection. Feroze Gibran.
Starting point is 01:31:50 To hell. Interesting. And what was your name, madam? Oh, Margo, Margo Sauer. Margo Sauer. We should maybe make business cards, good. Yeah. Oh.
Starting point is 01:32:02 No, I like this. We should make a group card. Yes, a group. Mystery Squad, I like this Group card yes Mystery squad I've been telling you guys mystery school kids club car if we can do that between now and to yes Excellent and mysteries free we can do a punch card Just just give me one moment. Let me just ensure that he's available at that time and we can we can have you back tomorrow Friday to be I'm just just one moment. Let me just ensure that he's available at that time and we can have you back tomorrow, Friday, 2pm. Just one moment. And make yourselves comfortable. And he just kind of skitters back to that door that he came out of and goes in.
Starting point is 01:32:36 Okay. Is that Egyptian exhibit, is that like, are we standing in it right now or is it kind of nearby can we kind of saunter over there? There's arrows kind of leading pointing to the back this is like collection this way and it's probably you're led to believe it's upstairs which would make sense like it is a very grand ballroom as you look up ahead and kind of follow your eye follow like follow him walking away. You just see this hallway has several doors off of it. One looks like a bathroom, maybe offices. There's a door, if you're kind of doing some spying here, there's a door that looks like it might be a library.
Starting point is 01:33:15 You see lots of shelves with books. And after a couple minutes, he comes back and he's like, you're all set, 2 p.m. tomorrow. I apologize, I couldn't get you in today, but Mr. Gavigan, I'm sure would love to speak with you. 2 p.m. tomorrow, just come right back here and I will be waiting for you. And you can speak to Mr. Gavigan.
Starting point is 01:33:41 Is there anything else that I can help you with since you you made the trip here from wherever you're... Are you visiting? I can detect an accent for you, Mr. Villiers, obviously, a fellow countryman, but the rest of you, are you visiting or are you expatriates? Well, you know, we're open to the idea of becoming expats. You know, we just got to see how welcoming your country is. Just kind of hanging out, enjoying the vibes.
Starting point is 01:34:08 Very clammy. Troy, what would this institute, like what this foundation, like what kind of information would we know, would we be aware of? Yeah, I mean, it would definitely be worth maybe doing some research on them, but just sort of like brass tacks. What you know about the PENYU Foundation is like it's a foundation that specializes in Egyptology. Like Sir R.B. PENYU was a renowned Egyptologist and they fund expeditions to Egypt as well as
Starting point is 01:34:35 like the cataloging and categorizing of, you know, what's the word I'm looking for, artifacts. And so, yeah, that's what this is. And obviously they got a lot of money because the place is tip top. Will funded. What's the student's name again? Thomas Kindry. Kindry.
Starting point is 01:35:00 Be a good man. I'm starting to talk like you guys. Jolly good. Yes, it's already, I'm starting to talk like you guys. It's great. Jolly, jolly good. Jolly good. Yes, Bob's your uncle. If you, I understand that you guys are very into Egyptology and what have you. Yes. Are you aware of these like weird Egypt related like murders or whatever that's going on?
Starting point is 01:35:23 We saw some clipping about that that looks pretty nuts Yes, it's it's unfortunate. You wouldn't be the first mr. Tilling ass that has inquired about that thankfully there's nothing to do with our work here though it is rather Disturbing to say the least we're here to protect and preserve Egyptian culture seems like others are interested in doing other things. But it is something we don't really discuss. We don't want to be involved with it.
Starting point is 01:35:51 And by protect it, you just mean just take stuff from Egypt and then bring it back here. You can see Faeruz's face kind of blind. Yeah, that's right. We are lucky to have a lot of ability at our disposal to treat those artifacts with the respect that they deserve. And, you know, there are many people out there that just hoard these things or try to sell them. Egyptians. Yes, we have a great relationship with Egypt and we have many people on the ground over there.
Starting point is 01:36:27 It's very symbiotic. We are not grave robbers, Mr. Tilley. On that note, Mr.— I'm sorry, your name again. It's Mr. Kinry, but please, you may call me Thomas. It's a really common name around here. As far as the protection of these sites, would that include any military personnel or would this just be strictly civilian? That is a better question for Mr. Gavigan. I wouldn't want to speak out of tone. I'm just his personal secretary.
Starting point is 01:37:01 Mr. Gavigan, I wouldn't want to speak out of turn. I'm just his personal secretary. But I assure you this is a renowned foundation. You know, we have some unfortunate connection to that expedition from some years past, but everything here is on the up and up. Yes. We've certainly not come here with any attempt, any cast or aspersions or bring not come here with any attempt, any castor, aspersions or bring poor publicity to you only to answer some questions that continue to plague us
Starting point is 01:37:29 about that expedition and those involved and the things they may be connected to. Very good, well, I'm sure Mr. Gavigan will be able to shed as much light as possible, more light than probably anyone as he was very close to Mr. Penhew. But if you'll excuse me, I do have some other business to attend to Penhew. But if you'll excuse me, I do have some other
Starting point is 01:37:45 business to attend to for Mr. Gavigan and the Foundation, but 2 p.m. tomorrow and I will greet you here. Will we be able to go look at his exhibition? Yes. Yes, is that all right? Yes, that should be fine. Just right down to the end of the hallway, you can take the stairs up to the second floor and you'll see there are a couple of men standing outside. You can browse at your leisure, and you may see some visiting scholars or whatnot, but they are deep in their work, so just if
Starting point is 01:38:18 you don't mind, I'm sure you have the same traditions in the countries from which you hail to just kind of keep things it's quiet yes this is a group that understands the meaning of quiet and discretion yes like going around killing lizard people marrying them with prostitutes as the saying goes well thank you so much mr. Kin... he gets the name again this Thomas Thomas is fine It's just so, it's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so.
Starting point is 01:38:47 It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so.
Starting point is 01:38:55 It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's just so.
Starting point is 01:39:03 It's just so. It's just so. It's just so. It's a couple of people sitting in there reading and then just beyond the door that he goes in, there's like a red door that kind of stands out and then there's a staircase leading up. He's like, all right, very well. I will see you at 2 p.m. tomorrow and pleasure, pleasure meeting you all. And he goes in that little side door. Did any of you catch his name? It's something, it's so, like, it's so ethnic. It's hard to... I could just slice right off my brain.
Starting point is 01:39:30 It's um... Teddy? Yeah. Teddy? It's on the tip of my tongue. Um... I know his first name is, yeah, his first name is Timothy. Absolutely.
Starting point is 01:39:38 Definitely. Timothy. Yes, definitely Timothy. Um... Um, well, I suppose let's take a gander around the room. Do you want to mistakenly lose our way there, on the way, or no? Oh, you wanna do some sneaky peekies?
Starting point is 01:39:56 I did notice a rather tempting library. I mean, he did give the directions to me and I am just as a woman. It is maybe moments after you get so easily lost. I know That's why we always have to stop and ask for directions. Why don't we just do that? Maybe moments after Margo suggests that you do notice a guard kind of walk by and regard you. And as he passes, a couple of minutes later, another guard walks by.
Starting point is 01:40:30 So there are people guarding the premises. Obviously, there's a lot of artifacts here, so they need to have protection. But it doesn't seem like many moments go past where someone isn't keeping an eye on you. And if you go up the stairs and head into the direction of the Egyptian collection, there are two more guards posted outside And they're like museum guards, you know what I mean? Like they don't look armed Maybe they are but they're just kind of standing there and they Ferus will take will lock kind of lock arms with Vaughn and just kind of make it look like they're strolling Leisurely like as though they were in a museum kind of lock arms with Vaughn and just kind of make it look like they're strolling leisurely
Starting point is 01:41:05 like as though they were in a museum. And you guys look so natural. They're getting the practice in now. It's great. So we really have, we really should. Right, right. Right this way, darling. And sweep into the room and take a look at what they have in their Egypt collection. Yes. You go into the exhibit hall and the windows are really tall. The ceilings are like 20 feet high, like you assumed from looking at the outside.
Starting point is 01:41:39 There are like little ventilator openings at the top that can be operated by mechanical arms to open the windows and let air in. Everything, all the surfaces in here are finished in marble and you see like glass cases with mummies, glass cases filled with pottery and other artifacts, statuary and so forth, just sort of filling the hall all in very tasteful rows. And there are other people about, this is just this air of hushed contemplation pervading the space.
Starting point is 01:42:14 Does it all look very like quote unquote normal? Or is there anything that speaks to us and what we've seen? Yeah, I mean, weren't were you guys was it the university that had the museum in it like going back to Peru Or did you guys go to a museum you went to a museum in Peru very early on I think yeah, yeah I was in my like free days. That's right, and you met The woman that ended up being like eaten by the carousel, right? Yeah. Oh, you like this painting?
Starting point is 01:42:49 Yeah. After having a tuberculosis attack or whatever. So yeah, I mean- Perhaps if there's anything that's got hieroglyphics in something, maybe any symbols that we might have stumbled across. Sure. I mean, you do see some slabs that maybe have been taken from the inside of a pyramid that have hieroglyphics on it.
Starting point is 01:43:10 Can't really make heads or tails of it. Looks like every hieroglyphics. There's you know a sort of quick glance as you walk around and take everything in like the other people that are walking around. Nothing really jumps out at you as like, wait a minute, that's a bloody tongue or like, that's Jackson Elias dressed as a pharaoh. Wait a minute. No, everything just seems like, like it's like going, if you were going to the Met and looking in Egyptian exhibit, even the mummies, there's no,
Starting point is 01:43:43 nothing really jumps out at you. You read the name and doesn't mean anything to me But fairies does want to take this opportunity that they're like alone and say fun I'm going to need your help with something Yes, I'm You served in the military. Yes Kill those gods I I need help looking for a certain name a soldier a British soldier that was stationed
Starting point is 01:44:19 in Egypt at a certain time and I'm wondering if you had any idea where I might look up if there's a registry or... You see... and she like pulls out her mother's journal and like it's mostly like like it's all in mostly in Arabic. The cat jumps out. They worship these, you know. Whoa! Secret compartment in the journal. One of the cats comes up. That's the cat shows up.
Starting point is 01:44:50 They did worship these things. Um, this. Um, this. Uh, and she flips through, like, her mother's journal, which is like, I would say probably 90% written in Arabic, but there's like a name that she stops, and it's the name, Troy, of this soldier that we're thinking she might have had an affair with.
Starting point is 01:45:10 I believe I was trying to think, was it Emel-el? Emel-el. Emel-el. I believe, right? And I know, all I know is this name. I don't know the full last name, but I know that he was in Cairo around and I give him the approximate dates. Very well. That's all I know.
Starting point is 01:45:30 Yes. There are military records that one could look at. If he did serve, if he served on the Western Front, then yes, I think we may be able to narrow it down, although depending on how many other Emils there are with this particular initial. I mean, it's a long shot, but there's... I haven't talked to you about my family much. My mother died in very mysterious circumstances that nobody seems to want to talk about. And all I have of her is this diary of hers. Something about it has never sat with me right, and I'm just trying to find answers.
Starting point is 01:46:19 Interesting. You think this British soldier stationed in Egypt that she met may have some clues to fill out the picture of her? If nobody surrounding me and my family will ever talk to me about her, maybe this person will. If he's still alive, I don't know. Or at least give me some insight into anything about her life. Well, I'll certainly see what I can do. After we leave here, I can... I'm now... Ross doesn't know where to go, but Vaughn knows where to go.
Starting point is 01:46:57 So I feel like some sort of military organization would probably keep like a... There's got to be a registry record. Yeah, a registry of records. Yeah, a registry of veterans. Maybe even the London Library or the British Museum would have those, but you could certainly, maybe even the concierge could do some research for you to find out like the best place to find that.
Starting point is 01:47:16 But you think it's possible you could find records, whether or not this person would show up in it, you think you could get access to those. Especially as a veteran, you might have more ability to gain access. So, yes, I will do everything in my power to find this man and see if we can discover his current whereabouts. Thank you. I mean, I know we're chasing so many things at the moment, but this would really mean a lot to me.
Starting point is 01:47:43 Of course. So you look about this space and again nothing really jumps out at you. You do see at one point a couple people dressed in suits come in and they're wearing white gloves and they walk over to a case and unlock it, open it up and they have like a box with them and they very, very carefully, it's like this long, long process, very carefully transfer the item to a box, close it, lock the case back up, and then take it outside of the room. And if you kind of casually watch where they're going, you see they are bringing it to another room and then the door closes.
Starting point is 01:48:44 Interesting. I suppose we're looking at just a fraction of their larger collection, the rest of which may be larger back there. Doesn't it make you think that how incredible it is that we could live a million lifetimes and never know everything there is to know about existence? There's always something. Yes. Vast gulfs of history extend behind us, deeper and longer than than the mind can comfortably probe into. Carter's talking to one of those security guards like,
Starting point is 01:49:22 So you put malt vinegar on your fish and chips? Sometimes. It's not a requirement, sir. Anyway, I think about crazy things sometimes, you know. Very good. I get deep. You're not from here, are you? I don't know what gave that away, but yes, it's very stupid.
Starting point is 01:49:51 Well, enjoy the collection. Yeah, and just cutting out of this conversation, just into the mind of Vaughn is just like, God, yes, so much in in history that you don't know Only there was a way to send your mind back there deep into the past The dose beckons Yeah, I mean you're you realize you're at a certain point you might be overstaying you're welcome There's you walk up and down your scanning. I don't even Yeah, I mean, you realize at a certain point you might be overstaying, you're welcome.
Starting point is 01:50:25 You walk up and down, you're scanning, I don't even need you to do any type of roles, you're welcome to. But again, nothing really jumps out at first glance, with the exception of them bringing something back. But even that, you don't know what's normal around here, so you don't know if that's abnormal. Can maybe even approach the guard. I say what was that there? I think removing something from the collection? Are they bringing something
Starting point is 01:50:52 new being added? Oh that's not too uncommon. Usually an accredited scholar with a letter of recommendation can request to have a specific artifact brought to one of our examination rooms for them to do their own sort of exam and study of these items. You have to have at least a letter of recommendation or be known in the community to do this because you know one would assume there could be handling of the object. You are normally locked in a room with one of our staff to ensure the safety of the artifact. So that's what you saw there most likely.
Starting point is 01:51:37 So a distinguished archaeologist is even now studying whatever was in that little box? Yes, it's a very normal occurrence here at the Penny Foundation. People from all over the world travel to the Penny Foundation to study the artifacts that we have uncovered over time. That is fascinating. I say we have, I just work here. Oh, normal. I was assuming you were still just like... Yes, yes. Didn't see you behind him. How... just out of curiosity, how long of a process does it take to examine and to research
Starting point is 01:52:14 a particular artifact? Certainly, I'm just the help. I don't know too much about the ins and outs of it, but everyone is granted different time, depending on their needs. To even have the opportunity to study these things means that you are accredited. So normally a day is the normal time. Although some scholars we do see come back from time to time for weeks on end for whatever they may be studying or preparing for an expedition as it were as the penny foundation does fund various expeditions to Egypt any manner of
Starting point is 01:52:51 reasons people study what we have here right and uh okay part of me wants to like peek in that little room it was taken into to see who's giving it the business. Sadly, that door is locked. Oh yes, of course. You mentioned the rough tight security you have here. I suppose you don't want any of these artifacts walking off. No, no, no. Some may not have any value whatsoever, but they certainly have value to the Foundation. Certainly. Nothing of that sort has ever happened, has it? No, no, no. No, no, no. No deading heists or raids on your Foundation?
Starting point is 01:53:33 Thankfully, no. Not on our watch. Well, great. Will. Will. Thanks for stopping by. So you have an appointment here tomorrow, 2 p.m. The day is still young, you know, I would say it's like noon by now. So you could still head over to Scotland Yard. You could go get lunch. Oh, you know, we should try some of this malt vinegar.
Starting point is 01:53:58 We should go find a place to go get some business cards made. Yes, yes, we should get some business cards made. That is a priority. I hate spelling my name out loud. Also, would it help if we like, researched the Penhew Foundation before going to the meeting tomorrow? Yes, I think we should at least have a better knowledge of what they would know so that we could ask the right questions.
Starting point is 01:54:26 Well, if someone wants to go to the library to give the one silver to the Penhues, I could certainly go to the printers and get you a date and get you an appropriate card for the mystery squad, if that is the name we're going with. You do have the best taste out of all of us, I would say. I trust my own decisions when it comes to the typeface, the kerning sizing. You're a Helmetica man. The font.
Starting point is 01:54:52 Through and through. Begone serifs. Serifs begone. The cod stock. Make sure it's a good cod stock. Yes. No serifs. Yeah, so mean, if some of you want to go to London Library, that's in St. James Square. That's a subscription library, but you might be able to get a day pass or get like a short-term membership at a reduced cost. Certainly we look official with business cards. Yeah. Once you get the business card, should be no problem at all. If others of you want to do other things
Starting point is 01:55:27 Either real or fake you can do that And then you could you could save Scotland Yard for some other time you could call ahead someone remind me about the Scotland Yard thing just to go to ask about the Investigations going on in these News articles is that idea the investigation going on? As concerns the Egyptian murders right okay which I thought that like we would maybe whatever we found out tomorrow yeah wait would help us in knowing what to look for or what to ask should we make do we need to make any appointments at advance because
Starting point is 01:56:05 Even with the lesson learned new foundation. Yeah Yeah, you could call ahead and try and reach inspector James Barrington. He was the one that was named in the scoop Yes, and and we have Insights about them occult sects that um that murder people associated with ancient African deities and what have you. It's not out of the ordinary that we wish to share information with the people who are investigating, I suppose.
Starting point is 01:56:43 All right. with the people who are investigating, I suppose. All right. Let's try to make an appointment for tomorrow after this, maybe. Maybe research and then go back to the hotel to use the hotel phone to call Scotland Yacht. All right, great. So let's head over to the London Library. Mr. Villiers, you could as the as the local person here you could set up a membership Maybe you even have one who knows and then I don't know please look around whatever like and you guys wanted to do some research On the Penn you foundation So go ahead and give me some library use roles
Starting point is 01:57:22 If you fail you can't keep in, you can't push or use luck. I got a 99. Man, okay, you know, I'm gonna use luck. Would you burn down the library? I'm still drunk. I can also try before you burn anything. Would you give it a swing? Out of curiosity, Marga, you got a 99?
Starting point is 01:57:40 Yeah. And what's your library use? Is it under 50? Oh yeah, it's 32. All right, so that is a fumble just oh, hey What yeah, what can I possibly fumble in here keep that out there? Okay? Whatever all right, so Margo comes in it just falls Points of luck I just got a regular success on the library use role for what okay? And then favorite is you use 16 points of luck to get a regular success on the library use role for what it's worth. And then favorites you use 16 points of luck to get a regular
Starting point is 01:58:06 should I? Oh, you got Vaughn Vaughn just fun hit it. Perhaps you don't speak British. Uh, that's right. It's it's I'm can make heads or tails. I'm like turning books. I won't spend luck. I'll just. All right, great.
Starting point is 01:58:28 So you start, you know, let's think about this. It's not like you're here for an hour. This is like a, you gotta hang out if you wanna really research. Not like, ah, finally a book and everything I need in the Penny Foundation. Vaughn as the only one succeeding has to kind of lead the way.
Starting point is 01:58:42 Maybe if more of you succeeded, it would take less time. Like you, oh, we got a bunch of books we can gather information But we'll say time passes and you do see public records showing that the foundation was established in 1890 so 35 years ago by Sir Aubrey Penhew a renowned Egyptologist and As director of the foundation Sir Aubrey oversaw and funded a number of expeditions to Egypt since its formation. He was obviously a leading figure in the Carlisle expedition of 1919 and was among those murdered
Starting point is 01:59:17 in Kenya. You see that Edward Gavigan succeeded him as the foundation's director. He worked there previously under Sir Aubry. What does the foundation do? It issues grants to scholars that are undertaking the study of Egyptian history and antiquities. Its work also includes negotiating permits with the Egyptian authorities. It sort of corroborates what they told you. It's like, oh yeah, we have people in Egypt we work with all the time.
Starting point is 01:59:48 And they have a back and forth that assists with planning expeditions, travel itineraries, the hiring of local labor. The foundation takes care of all of that. The building in London that you just visited serves to house Egyptian artifacts recovered from the sands of time, as well as acting as a repository of information concerning Egyptian history and the numerous expeditions undertaken in northeastern Africa. Further reading, it appears that roughly 20 digs in Egypt have been supported by the Foundation, with 10 of those happening
Starting point is 02:00:28 since Sir Aubrey's untimely death. Unfortunately, many of the digs since the Carlisle expedition have been overshadowed by tragedy while in Egypt. Seems like the expeditions that have happened afterwards, several people have died, 20 in all. After the Carlisle expedition? Yeah, like some of these expeditions that they've funded have been met with tragedy. Like 20 people have died overall.
Starting point is 02:01:00 You see that some of them, the death seems to be attributed to being murdered by the locals, which is what the story was about what happened to the Karlo expedition. Yeah, that was in Nairobi, right? Right. But it's kind of the same thing. They went too far out there and then people were hung for it and they were like, all right, case closed. So some were murdered by locals.
Starting point is 02:01:26 But as you keep digging, you see that some of the deaths were suicides. And currently the foundation appears to have one dig that is underway near Cairo led by someone named Dr. Henry Clive, who is excavating on the Giza Plateau. Everything else you find out is just sort of more of the same, but the deaths really stood out to you as strange. It's one thing like, oh, they went into territory they weren't supposed to.
Starting point is 02:02:02 Maybe they met some tribe that is outside of civilization. They walked where they weren't supposed to. Maybe they met some tribe that is outside of civilization. They walked where they weren't supposed to. But some suicide. Also, I was looking back at, this is only tangentially related, but I was looking back at the older articles we got from the beginning about the Carlisle expedition. And they went to Egypt and they were in Cairo and then the whole reason that they even left to go to Nairobi
Starting point is 02:02:32 or this is East Africa was well-earned rest and And then also someone said it's too hot in Egypt for Anglo-Saxons At this time of the year, but anyway, they were like Carlisle didn't comment but Aubrey Penhew Debunked rumors that the expedition had discovered clues to the legendary wealth of the lost minds of King Solomon Maintaining the party was going on Safari in respite from our sandy labors party was going on safari in respite from our sandy labors.
Starting point is 02:03:08 So just something to keep in mind when we talk to them tomorrow too about like what happened with the Carlisle situation and whatever the story was that got fed. Okay, interesting. Seems as though everyone who gets begins to delve into these sorts of things, whether literally or figuratively, winds up in grave, grave danger. Margo picks up the book you're looking at and just like holds it in front of herself upside down. She's like, I don't know.
Starting point is 02:03:42 I haven't found anything. I haven't found anything helpful. I don't, this library is hard to use. I don't know why. It's just disorganized, I think. Yeah. I don't think anything is organized here. I think your eyes are crossed a little bit.
Starting point is 02:04:00 What? You've been through a lot today. Yes. We've all been through a lot today. Yes. We've all been through a lot. Nothing like a scent of reptiles to make you disoriented. Yes, well, I will, I will have a tick. I'll just pop off to the print shop and... You can go with like a slate gray
Starting point is 02:04:23 or like a buttercream for the card color. Oh, what about eggshell? Eggshell. I like a raised typeface as well, something that I can touch. Spare no expense, Mon, we know you're good for it. Heavy paper so people know we mean business. Mystery squad. Of course, my name at the top.
Starting point is 02:04:41 Guilt too far? We have first. Right, okay. Yeah. Of course my name at the top First right, okay. Yeah reverse alphabetical order even though V comes after T So day one was visiting a tabloid following up on one thing killing in a lizard person and leaving the body there bringing the
Starting point is 02:05:02 insane painter to an asylum full of nuns and calling it a day. Day two involved going to the Peñu Foundation and setting up a meeting with Edward Gavigan, looking around the Egyptian collection, going to a library to do a little more research on the Peñu Foundation before your meeting, and then going to get business cards for the mystery squad. Yes, and Vaughn goes out into the fog, pops his collar and strides through the fog towards the print shop and takes a hard left turn right before he's about to enter it and walks into a nearby jewelry store.
Starting point is 02:05:36 Oh, so we were just closing up the day, but you appear to be a man of means. How may I help you? Um, yes, I'm looking over these cases. Um, what do you have in a princess cut diamond? Princess cut. She must be one lucky lady. Let me see what I have here.
Starting point is 02:06:02 And, uh, he reaches down and he down and he seemed fiddling with some stuff and he lays out like four rings and they're all princess cut. And he goes on to explain like, Oh, let me tell you this one is this one's high in clarity. This one's high in carrots. And is this a carrot size you were looking for? Particular carrot size? Oh yes, I apologize. I assumed you knew a little bit about rings. There are four C's. I could go into it. What's your budget?
Starting point is 02:06:38 Um, my budget is, uh, extremely high. I hope. Like, uh, lean over and just kind of select which one seems the most tasteful. Well, very, very good choice. All right, let me get that for you and wrap it up. And he wraps it all up and takes a ton of money from you for this ring.
Starting point is 02:07:06 This is knocking my credit rating down 10 points. It's true. I mean, what is your credit rating? It's like crazy high, right? It's crazy high. It's my highest skill. Your best skill. It's 90.
Starting point is 02:07:16 What is the three month salary equivalent in Cthulhu's credit rating? $42. That was a hundred dollar ring, yeah. And he hands it to you in a box all wrapped up and he's like, well, thank you I'm glad I am glad I didn't close up early. I Wish you the best of luck May ask your fiance's name Um, her name is uh, Her name is Férues Chabron.
Starting point is 02:07:47 I-I-I don't think, um, she'll take mine. We're terribly modern, you see. Perhaps... Perhaps we'll hyphenate. Lovely, lovely. Well, best of luck to you. In your next journey, as it were. in your next journey, as it were. Yes. Ah, quite a journey lies ahead, that's to be sure. Good day. Good day.
Starting point is 02:08:17 Is the print shop next door still open? The print shop closed, unfortunately. No! What are you going to tell us when you come back? Uh, yeah, you can go to gotta finish up, get your cards. Meet up with everybody. Go back to the hotel. Now it's later at night. You were at the library for a long time. A couple more successes. Maybe we would have got through it quicker. You still want to call through to Scotland Yard? Yeah, let's try to make that appointment.
Starting point is 02:08:45 Okay. I'm ahead of time. You call through and do you ask to get like, speak to James Barrington, Inspector Barrington? Yeah. Oh, is there a way to make an appointment to meet with Inspector Barrington? Um, hold please. I'll put you through to Mr. Barrington. And it just rings and rings and rings and there's no answer. And there's your fumble.
Starting point is 02:09:12 Ahhhhh. Boooo. That's not even a library. Okay, now. I like a dangling fumble. Damn. Is that like a met- there's no answering machine? Oddly enough's no answering machine It is a little needle falls on a record
Starting point is 02:09:37 There's no answering machine I can't get through to anyone that Who took this picture business hours did somebody take a photo of the painting? Margo did. Margo did. You can develop that later or are you going to develop it any time soon? I feel like it's a roll of film. So I would need to take all the pictures type of thing. So this is something you can do later. Selfie time.
Starting point is 02:10:02 So you guys are back, maybe a couple more pisco sours and then Got a meeting with mr. Edward Gavigan the next day Any other business for today the library kind of took up your whole day after goofing off at the Egyptian collection Wait, so do we get the cards or not? Place the order tilling hairstyle, you know, they don't it's cards or not? Place the order, Tilling Hairstyle, you know, they don't, it's not a one hour turnaround. It's sitting here for like an hour waiting to see these goddamn cards.
Starting point is 02:10:33 I can do my prints in an hour for my photos, what you mean? Don't worry, the cards are forthcoming. Why is everyone giving me the third degree? You were just in the roll file. I thought you were doing it while you were there. What is that strange bulge in your pocket? Nothing.
Starting point is 02:10:49 That was a box shape. Just a pistol, probably. All right, so let's go to sleep and You are I imagine you have a nice hotel room Vons loaded and Margot and fae ruse at one point in the night you You like wake up, I don't know if it's simultaneous or not, but you wake up like people do from time to time and just kind of turn over. Um, but you realize you woke up to the sound of something and so you listen and it's this like... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz bedroom situation here, a two-bedroom suite that the two of you aren't sharing a room. Would you hear this buzzing coming from the hallway?
Starting point is 02:12:09 I'll slowly follow it. Get up. Margo, do you get up as well? Yeah, maybe in the beam. When we're woken up from sleep, she maybe forgot about the vision, so she's like, this is fly, I'm going to kill it. Meanwhile, Faeruz is doing the slow barefoot creek towards him.
Starting point is 02:12:36 You walk ever slowly towards the sun. Starts to get a little louder and you open the door leading to sort of the common area and you look out into the living space and see a tall figure sitting in the high back chair with its back to you.
