Starting point is 00:00:01 Want to hear an ad-free version of this show? Go to greatest.supercast.com. Here's to the finest crew in Starfleet. Engage. Welcome to The Greatest Generation. It's a Star Trek podcast by a couple of guys who are just a little bit embarrassed to have a Star Trek podcast. I'm Ben Harrison. I'm Adam Franica.
Starting point is 00:00:32 What are you doing today, Adam? We've been trying to diagnose an internet issue at my house for a while. and I found a guy on a pole. Ooh. Like, just before we got on mic, my internet went out unexpectedly. And I'm like, I'm like, fuck, fuck. We got so much work to do today.
Starting point is 00:00:54 And we need the internet for that. And in that funny way, I like went outside to cool off. I'm like, just standing out there, head down, like, oh, man, we're so screwed. And I hear rustling up the pole where the electricity and the phone line and all that comes from. I heard the rustling and I look up there and there's a there's a dude in a vest up there. I'm like, hey, what are you doing up there? Did you just unplug my internet? And he's like, yeah, we got word of, of an issue in your neighborhood. So I'm here to try to fix it. And I'm like, did you find anything? He's like, nope, not really. Just patching things back up
Starting point is 00:01:31 and you'll get back your internet in a moment. Dang. And that's my story about finding a guy up the poll. If we had had to cancel this our second record of the day, after the day I had getting ready for it, having arrived at our production meeting this morning under the impression that we only had one thing to record today. Why did you have that impression? It's been on the calendar forever. I know it has, but I don't ever have the ability to remember something that's on the calendar when I'm not looking at the calendar. So I try to look at it like the night before and then the morning of. And I looked at it last night.
Starting point is 00:02:13 And I think maybe what happened is that my wife added karate class to the calendar. That's not a real thing, Ben. I got to tell you, if you're seeing karate class on the shared calendar, oh, no. I think I got to sit you down and break some bad news to you. my wife is not taking a self-defense class my four-year-old is taking a self-defense class at his preschool but it was added to the calendar and it's right in between our two records so it separated them in my little list of things and I saw one of those records and I just like glazed over the other one apparently and uh almost fucked everything up just as much as your internet almost fucked everything up
Starting point is 00:03:10 but look at us things are fine we're here things are great i don't suspect anything wrong with uh with the systems or the deployments or anything about what's going on at uxbridge shemota i feel like if there were a conspiracy at uxbridge shemota i mean i'm probably drinking the tea i'm getting invited to the dinner it's probably at being in Vegas right you go to that dinner and all a sudden you get got. Yeah. I mean, listen, I think if you looked at all of the paper trail, all the statements and emails surrounding all of this, you'd see Adam is like, oh, my internet. I don't know. Not so sure it's going to be up for it. Ben is like, I completely forgot. You could see why somebody would arrive at the conclusion. Maybe Ben and Adam are trying to not review this
Starting point is 00:03:57 episode. There's nothing I want more than to get back into this episode. What a day to watch review conspiracy. One of my favorite episodes of all time. What about you? Let's get into it. It's season one, episode 25 of Star Trek the next generation. Ben, I think it is so important to remember that we'll always have Paris is the episode directly before conspiracy, a fact that I feel like is forgotten by most people. And gosh, I can't remember what the episode was before that.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Seems like that was also pretty important. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, when you go through an episode like one where Tasha Yard died and then one where your captain loves and loses, what you need now more than ever is not so much shore leave, but a mission that's shore leave adjacent. A mission that like an Adam Sandler film set on a tropical island is like, yeah, you're getting paid. but you're also chilling the most. If I were going to tell sex jokes in the workplace, I for damn sure would not choose data as the recipient of those jokes.
Starting point is 00:05:18 You'd want to choose someone who's a little more chill, someone who at least you could presume would get the joke. Data is neither of those things. I so identify with Jordy in this moment, though, when you realize a joke that had a long walk set up, like this one clearly had is not going to land and you know before the punchline
Starting point is 00:05:39 even comes and some people, myself included, Jordy included, will do the thing of trying to like will the humorous response into existence by like laughing along with the words as they come out of their mouth.
Starting point is 00:05:56 What a fucking nightmare. Almost as nightmarish as the laugh that comes out of data after he dissects the frog. I mean, it's an episode that begins with some uncanny valley shit. You know? And it's not where you remember it being.
Starting point is 00:06:16 It's actually earlier than where you think. I mean, who could hold it against Riker for wanting to get to Pacifica a little bit quicker if this is how their day is going? And they start talking about what a great hang this planet is. Wharf is maybe the only one not excited because he doesn't. doesn't like swimming. Too much like bathing. Is the only time Wharf takes a shirt off on TNG
Starting point is 00:06:40 when that barrel breaks his back a couple seasons from now? Man. Because if you're Wharf, you've got to... I mean, I'm saying this as a lifelong skinny man. Like, if you're Wharf, you got to be enthusiastic about taking off your shirt at the beach, right? You have to. You have to.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Yeah. But no. I mean, I couldn't tell you, whether that was... was the only time or not. Code 47. Yeah, oh, shoot. Yeah, that has just come in, hasn't it? And the call goes straight to Picard in his stateroom where he is asleep. And, you know, he gets up and wipes the cold out of his eyes and gets on FaceTime with Captain Walker Bigel-Hans-Keel who made a difficult decision placing this phone call. This was not something he did lightly waking Picard up in the middle of the night.
Starting point is 00:07:40 No, I mean, he's got a warning as big as his eyes and his hands. It's about Starfleet. About something we've always considered to be impossible. I don't know. I guess so. And he doesn't want to talk about it over subspace. Subspace, especially a private subspace channel, something we've known to afford you some privacy with. Like, what's the big deal?
Starting point is 00:08:01 We can talk about this here, right, Walker? No way. Walker's kind of taken the clandestine nature of what he's trying to convey to Picard the way Jordy took the humorous nature of what he was saying to Jordy where he's like, I'm not going to tell you it's exactly what's going on, but you should be very worried, you know, putting it in a very over-the-top tone to convey just how life and death this is. we're going to have to do this face to face. Ditalics B is the spot. Step on it. Get your ass over here. You owe me, Picard. This mention of owing Walker Keel a favor makes me wonder why.
Starting point is 00:08:52 And maybe just how many times has Picard been stabbed by a Gnossacken during a game of Domjot? Like, was this exactly the same scenario? Could be. Seems like it could be. Yeah. Don't take anything for granted. Ben, we've been doing this for easily 10,000 hours, this podcast together, which makes us experts, clearly. And I can't remember if I've made this observation before. Tell me if I am repeating myself. But does the guy who play Walker Keel, is that the same guy who plays Mario from the magic shop in Pee We's Big Adventure?
Starting point is 00:09:29 Trick-off! Okay. It's been a long time since I've seen Pee We's. big adventure, but in my mind, they are the same guy with that same kind of intensity. Like, like the way that he looks at the person he's talking to, to emphasize his own eyes, and with how obsessed he is with the size of body parts. Yeah. No, I mean, I can see why there's connective tissue in your brain.
Starting point is 00:09:53 I don't know the answer to your question. A doctor sees very little connective tissue in my brain. I should tell you that. Don't trust anyone, Picard. And we throw it a theme. And when we come back, Picard has gotten himself dressed and barges onto the bridge asking for info about Ditalix B. Data explains that it's an uninhabited mining world. And Picard pronounces that that is where they will head.
Starting point is 00:10:24 And we're keeping this super quiet. We will not be creating records or logs of the ship doing this. We will not be telling Pacifica. We might be late because we do not want anyone to know that we went here. And in fact, we shall not send transmissions of any kind that Picard doesn't personally approve. I am not going to say I am better or smarter than Picard in most ways. But in this one specific way, I have to suggest that maybe if you want things kept private, Captain Picard, I would at least look around the bridge, especially at those randos in the back of
Starting point is 00:11:06 the horseshoe at those stations, to make sure they're on the same page. And if I'm not sure of that, I'm doing this messaging in the conference room, aren't you? Yeah. I mean, we have talked about this before, that over the course of this episode, people get read in repeatedly to the secret information without much in the way of explanation for why suddenly everybody gets to know. It is not to be discussed with fellow officers unless deemed absolutely necessary. Ditalix B is an interesting destination for this conversation because it is so barren. It used to be a mining planet. It used to be a bug planet, maybe.
Starting point is 00:11:48 But it's not anymore. Nothing lives there. It's just very, very, very, very empty and very red. Why the devil are we going to this planet? I love the description of it, that it like always faces the sun on one side and that the mining colonies are all around the circumference because it's like too hot on one side and too cold on the other side. Yeah, yeah, a temperate zone ring. I love a weird planet. It's like a smoke ring on a planet.
Starting point is 00:12:15 I know. I have improved it. Well, there are a bunch of ships already here and fucking war. attempts communication. Like Picard was just in here saying, don't send any transmissions I don't personally approve. And Picard's like, stop doing that. When we see Walker Keel's ship obliterated later,
Starting point is 00:12:41 I think one thing that would give that moment far more weight is seeing these three ships in orbit above Ditalix B. I wanted so bad to see this. And it made me think about if during, the remaster of TNG, there were rules about just, like, you can't really add stuff that isn't there. You've got to just improve stuff that already is. And man, if there was ever an opportunity to just like give us another exterior with those three classes of ships, I would have loved that. Yeah, I mean, it seems like maybe at this point in the series, they've got the budget and
Starting point is 00:13:22 capability to do like one ship in front of planet or two ships in front of space. But when they do two ships in front of planet, it often looks kind of janky. So maybe it was just kind of outside of the brief, like what they could accomplish with the budget and time that they had to show a whole bunch of ships. But you really want to see them. I am the cutest of all. Block pages on my best. I am the cutest of all. There are four. Three people on the surface for three ships in orbit means that Picard is going to be the last two arrive. This is the best for Picard, right?
Starting point is 00:14:03 Because you don't want to be the first one down there. I think that's way scarier, isn't it? To be just waiting? I mean, in the Chris and Snoop from the wire parlance, though, don't you want to get to the drop early to make sure that the drop isn't on you? I mean, does the drop not get? On Picard here for being last?
Starting point is 00:14:27 I mean, this is Walker Keel. They are homies from way back. Them two and Jack Crusher, they paled around a ton. There is a bunch of biographical information exchanged. And Walker even challenges Picard by, you know, asking him questions or implying people from their shared person. history that don't exist so that Picard can call him on that. Like, you don't have a brother,
Starting point is 00:14:59 you have two sisters. And they're hot. What the hell is all this about? It's straight out of an SNL sketch where like the game show is how, how good do you know your wife's friends? Like, like, can you name two of them, like that sort of thing? Like, you can see, like, this is easy for Picard. Picard is obviously good at remembering things about the relationships in his life. But I have got to believe that not everyone is as good as Picard at things like this. And maybe there should be a different test. I would not, I'd be like, huh, well, you seem really confident that your brother introduced them. So maybe I'm misremembering. We cut to inside Ben's brain and he's like, well, maybe he just didn't tell me about the brother. And maybe that's an issue with me. That is exactly
Starting point is 00:15:50 what would happen inside my brain. Captain Ricks is our bollian captain, first bollian in Star Trek, Captain Ricks. And Picard has met this guy at the Altarian Conference. We also meet Trilus Scott, the hottest of hot shots. She made captain faster than anyone in Starfleet history. And they're there with Walker Keel to not really give Picard much more information than was already discussed.
Starting point is 00:16:24 Like there's a threat of undescribed scope and purpose. Like, we just kind of wanted to ask you if anything weird has happened lately. And he's like, you mean, aside from like being on Star Trek? Well, there is this young person who is planting these vegetables in the weird dirt. Yeah, he does not bring up the audit that Dexter Remick ran. I thought that's in an episode where Quinn and Remick are brought back. It is very interesting that Picard does not cite a very similarly vague concern voiced by Admiral Quinn to these people.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Pretty confusing tone to leave things on too. Like, hey, Picard, watch your back. obviously, and also, you keep this a secret. But also, tell Beverly Crusher I said hi. Which is it, man? Like, that feels like a trap to me. Like, oh, shit. Like, so if I tell Beverly Crusher, hi to you, is that going to get back to you? And then you're going to know not to trust me with the sensitive information? Watch your back, like, watch my back because of you guys? Or watch my back because of other guys? I'm just, the tone is so weird. Don't trust anyone. Remember that, Sherlock.
Starting point is 00:17:48 There's a lot of confusing elements to this part of the story, and that there is still a half an hour left to tell it, is one of the miracles to me about this episode, is how slowly the information drips out before, like, smoothly pressing the accelerator down all the way until the end. They just want an ally, and they want him to keep his head on a swivel. So back to the ship, he goes and he is not necessarily getting the most sympathetic ear from Troy, who is the first
Starting point is 00:18:24 person he opens up to about this. Like, she is really trying to poke holes in what is eating Picard about this, the Walker Keel breaking regulations to have this clandestine meeting stuff, the keeping it from the rest of the crew stuff. Like all of this doesn't feel great to her. And I like this moment for Troy because it feels like an interesting moment for her to to like challenge him before he goes over the deep end with this kind of thing. Like the moment you like everybody wishes they had with that one cousin who decided that 9-11 was an inside job. Like if I had been there like in the moment where he was encountering that information and been like able to like engage in a Socratic dialogue with my. Dipshit cousin, like, would then he have fallen down this rabbit hole, you know? Well, only, I think that comparison works if only the cousin knew someone who helped
Starting point is 00:19:28 build the twin towers or whatever. Like, I think a big, big part of this scene feels a lot like, you know, that friend of yours who is dating a person that makes their life miserable. Like, the Walter Keelness of this moment is the thing about it that Deanna Troy doesn't understand, that she can't possibly understand. And it's the thing that Picard gambles on utterly. Like, this is why he's willing to risk his career. This is also why Deanna Troi doesn't get it. Like, she doesn't know him or how trustworthy he is
Starting point is 00:19:59 and why he would risk it all for him. Do you think that Picard considered putting this in Imzadi terms to her? Like Walker Keel is like my non-sexual imzati. Can you have those? Is that a kind of guy? I'm just really fascinated by the choice in Troy to begin with, right? Like, imagine not reading in your first officer before Deanna Troy or even like Dr. Crusher. Data is kind of the second person to even get a glimpse of this. He gets put on a project and gets set up in Picard's office and a little desk in the corner
Starting point is 00:20:39 analyzing all of the orders of any kind that Starfleet has issued for the. the past six months. Yeah, this is going to be a lot of micro-fiche flipping, right? Yeah, yeah. That's what this feels like. Crusher comes on the bridge asking, hey, was that the USS Horatio, Walker Keel's ship? Love that guy. Oh, man, I would have loved to see him.
Starting point is 00:21:05 And everyone was like, shut up, Beverly, nobody is talking about that right now. We're all kind of trying to avoid the subject. She's like, you know, Kramer telling that lady she needed a nose job. or whatever. How close does Enterprise need to be to that ship for it to be identified from a window, I wonder? Like, the idea that she could notice it and presume that it's that specific ship, Walker Keel's ship specifically, I think is fascinating.
Starting point is 00:21:36 And that you could do that when you're on a Federation ship. You could look out the window and recognize a certain ship, not just the class of it. Yeah. You know, you could tell Walker Keel's ship has, like, enormous Bessard collectors, like, relative to the rest of its fascia. Oh, sure, yeah. I thought you were going to say that it had a, like, a very deep draft because it's a keel ship.
Starting point is 00:22:02 Oh, right. Doesn't have a rudder. Anyways, Warf and Jordi both see something weird going on on their instrument panels nearby. kind of feels like it might be related to Crusher bringing up how much you would have liked to see the captain of the USS Horatio. Yeah, if you're Dr. Crusher, maybe you never talk about the things you would love to see,
Starting point is 00:22:28 again, for a very long while after the obliteration of his ship is made clear. Yeah, yeah, it takes a while to analyze. No identifying marks on the wreckage and no bodies ever get mentioned. but... The sensors seem to be a little bit confused by a number of severed body parts. Like, I know these should be hands, but they're just much, much larger than you'd expect.
Starting point is 00:22:54 Like, the mass is off the charts relative to like a human hand. Yeah. Imagine Dr. Crusher arriving just in time for this. Pretty bad stuff. Jordy's over in the corner and he goes, USS Horatio was destroyed. That blows. and then Data laughs again. Great moment.
Starting point is 00:23:14 What a moment. So the explosion of the Horatio is sufficient enough of a reason for Picard to read in the rest of the senior staff on what's going on. It's finally brought up that like Quinn and Keel both seem to be kind of nodding in the same direction. They seem to be concerned about a vague thing that was one thing. and Riker is kind of taking the Troy attack here. He's like, I just don't see it. Like, this is Starfleet we're talking about, like this weird general, non-specific threat to Starfleet
Starting point is 00:23:52 or something inside of it. I just don't buy it. Personally, I don't believe this conspiracy theory. He's suffering from the Deanna Troi problem, though. Like, there's a blind spot because his best friends didn't tell him about this. They did not. Like, do you think that would move the needle, or do you think Riker is just baseline non-suspicious or of a conspiratorial mindset here?
Starting point is 00:24:18 Like, if he had seen the guy from the Arsenal Freedom planet, like, and he'd said something to Riker, Riker would have been like, damn, that guy, he's a straight shooter. I think he's probably telling the truth. I mean, he is standing at a weird distance in the middle of a fern, but just like the cut of his jib. The guiding principle on a star-feeding face. And you can't find it within yourself. You don't deserve to wear that uniform. The research that data has been doing is done now, and he gives this report to Picard and Riker in the conference room, confirming that a bunch of strange assignments have been done throughout Starfleet with one goal.
Starting point is 00:25:02 control the important segments of Federation territory strategically. To what end? Too early to tell. Right. They're like getting different officers in charge of things. And basically, like, you could rapidly have control over all of the most vital stuff if you wanted to. But nobody has noticed that this is happening because these orders are all so subtle and and unsuspicious on their face.
Starting point is 00:25:36 Riker is still not completely bought in on this, but Picard is like, hey, but you should be like super nervous about this. And I do think like we need to take this straight to the tippy top. Picard looks at his watch that we didn't notice him wearing. He's like, oh, look at the time. 20 minutes left in this episode. Let's get back to Starfleet H.Q. and see if we can't find any answers out at the source.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Off-screen, he tells everyone else about it, and they head to sector zero-zero-one. Ben, before they do this, were you bumped it all by the idea of the Horatio is obliterated? Picard does not get a hold of Triluscott or Ricks in those other two ships. and I understand like for for story economy reasons you can't you can't tie off every thread in an episode like this it's moving too fast but do you think the quality of this episode changes if you're able to do that like we're changing the scope but we're also putting the noose around Picard and the enterprise tighter by by like maybe attempting to communicate with them but something seems weird about trial as Scott and Rick or maybe their ships explode too or any number of things. But the fact that they're ignored completely,
Starting point is 00:27:06 I wish another choice was made there. I mean, trial comes back, but Rick's, yeah, it would have been nice if they were like at warp nine and they're like, we have another debris cloud off the port bow and Picard's like, we do not have time to stop and analyze this. And then it's just never addressed again. What a dark moment that would be, yeah. A dark moment in a dark episode that could take it.
Starting point is 00:27:27 Another dark moment they get is when they show up and they're kind of in orbit of the moon blowing in calls and nobody picks up the phone for a while. Pretty clear that the Admiralty wanted to get all arranged in a tableau before answering. Finally, we get Admiral's Savar, Aaron, and Quinn. And they're like, hey, love to see you show up, but would rather watch you leave. Steve, Picard, what gives? Why are you here? There's so much awkwardness in this FaceTime. Far more awkwardness than I think we ever experienced during COVID lockdown on our many face times with our relatives. Like, it's stilted and oddly posed and frozen.
Starting point is 00:28:21 And like when Remick walks in and whispers in Savar's ear, there's like there's this moment where they got to hang up on them. for a little bit. And the laugh line for me every time is Riker saying they just seem completely normal to me. At least we can be sure nothing is wrong with these three admirals. The weird gap between placing the call and them picking up feels like they were deciding whether they were going to put pants on or not. Yeah. And they decided against it. And just they're like, we're going to be sitting at a table. Nobody will be able to see. Counselor, any thoughts? How to say Someone is hiding something
Starting point is 00:28:58 But I can't tell who or what So this awkwardness Turns into a dinner invitation For Riker and Picard And a courtesy visit to Enterprise By Admiral Quinn And this is a moment that I mean is even a bad look for Picard
Starting point is 00:29:12 Because Picard misinterprets this as like Oh yeah Quinn's on our side That's why he wants to come up here alone But for Quinn to say he can't make dinner And like pivoting to coming to the ship instead Do you think that's weird? Or insulting to the folks who are putting together this dinner? Yeah, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Like, the dinner plan comes together, like, on the call, right? So it's not like they have a reservation or anything that he's, like, putting them in a tight spot. Like, we got a six-top and they're not going to seat us with five people. Yeah. Like, I don't want to have to invite Remick to this. Like, he's so fucking annoying at dinner. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:29:48 He always orders a bunch of stuff for the table that nobody wants. And it's like, oh, now we're splitting the bill. and all this shit that we didn't even eat. We have to pay for. Thanks, Dexter. So for reasons we understand later, the other admirals are cool with Quinn peeling off and doing his ship stuff.
Starting point is 00:30:05 But before he leaves, he's got to prepare the trapper keeper with the nub and bug he's going to bring up there. And Remick is on the transporter duty. He's there to operate the transporter to send him up. And that is an important detail. I love the hedge fake that Quinn kind of like closes the trapper keeper when he hears somebody coming in behind him.
Starting point is 00:30:26 Yeah. Like he doesn't want Remick to see what he's got in his little box. On Enterprise, we see just how strangely Admiral Quinn is acting compared to the last time we hung out with him. Picard even can't help but notice the change in attitude from this guy. It's like he's been hanging around with Frank Thomas and Doug Flutie. I must say, you're looking remarkably well. We got new genetics total team.
Starting point is 00:30:50 This is very strange when an Admiral shows. up feeling more hail and younger than he has recently. What's going on? Why does he keep talking about how she will like it too? Never felt better in my life. He's so full of vim and vigor that as soon as he walks out of frame, Picard is pulls Riker off to the side and he's like, dude, that is not Admiral Quinn. The Admiral Quinn I know is like so close to death. You can just like hear his, his liver struggling with all of the all of the boozing that he does on a daily basis. You want to know someone that I know does not happen to like it to Admiral Quinn's wife. Yeah, I love the attempted retcon by Quinn. Like, oh, yeah, I did say like I was concerned about something with Starfleet, but I wasn't like,
Starting point is 00:31:44 I wasn't saying that there was some like dark, nefarious plot afoot. I was just saying like, all of these different cultures trying to join up with us. It's like it's a logistical nightmare. It's exhausting. It really is. So Picard orders Riker to stay close to Quinn while Picard decides to go down to Starfleet HQ by himself. And hey, Will, if you could just make up a reason for Quinn to pay Dr. Crusher a visit for a full body scan, that would be super. Thank you. Any excuse at all we could find to get him into Six Bay would be really great. One detail about this scene that I don't think we've ever talked about before is like, so Picard pulls Riker into the transporter room to have this conversation in private.
Starting point is 00:32:33 There is a transporter operator in the room listening to all of this because when he's ready to transport, he signals that person that he's ready while Riker watches. I want to know that guy's story. That guy, I mean, you must have a crazy. NDA to work in the transporter room because you're going to hear all kinds of shit like this. Riker is not psyched about the assignment Picard is giving him. Like, go look after Quinn and try to trick him into getting a full body scan. Like, that doesn't sound good for my career. Have you ever had to lightly encourage an elderly relative to go see any sort of medical professional
Starting point is 00:33:12 ever? Do you know how impossible that is? Doesn't sound good. What Riker should be? What Riker should know to do is give Wesley Crusher that little circular scanner thing that he used on that old lady who was trying to adopt him do one of those scans. We should get all the information we need from that, right? That would be pretty good. Wesley is not in this episode. He would have served a great utility here. This nub and bug won't like the doctor and especially her son. It does like you. Picard does not beam down to the same transporter room that Quinn beamed up from. He just beams down into a hallway where the admirals and Remick are waiting for him. And it's very courteous.
Starting point is 00:33:58 It's very convivial. Remick is slightly apologetic in tone about the way he put the screws to Picard's crew. Picard is like, I mean, nice to be here, but why is it so fucking quiet? And we're having dinner at like a conference table in the office? Why don't we go to a restaurant or something? Using rolling chairs? You can't eat on a rolling chair. You just can't, guys.
Starting point is 00:34:28 It's impossible. Riker comes to poke his nose in on Admiral Quinn, who's back in the same quarters. and he's going to give him a tour of the ship. He's excited. Quinn is pumped to show Riker this superior form of life. This old man fight that pops off here, it's great for all the stuntman cuts. It's great for how dynamic it is.
Starting point is 00:35:16 It is awful for the kicks. And here's why. You just don't see kicks in fights the way you do in this scene. The kicks that Riker does to Quinn's jaw kind of look like when triumph the insult comic dog punches somebody. You know, like it's like a puppet foot on a stick that they just put up into the frame. Look at that. What's with the 80s hairstyle, man? Look at this.
Starting point is 00:35:44 Kick as a first strike in a fight also seems pretty rare. In a fight depicted on film or in TV, I mean. Is that just catch as catch can? like Quinn goes with high kicks as his opening volley, and so Riker responds in kind. Oh, I like that. Like high kick contest going on here. I like it.
Starting point is 00:36:08 I love the line about the vitamins. I do wonders for the body. It feels like it's like a reference to something, but it's not as far as I can tell. It happens to every man. Testosterone levels drop as your age. I also, I paused this a couple of times to get a look at these.
Starting point is 00:36:26 stunt performers. And I don't know if you would agree pausing the episode where I did, but I couldn't help but see the stuntman playing Riker as John Mullaney. It's like, you kicked me right in the face.
Starting point is 00:36:45 What's happening? Now I'm going through a horizontal piece of glass like some kind of reverse feminist. What kind of vitamins is this guy taking anyway? Pretty great. Pretty great, Malaney. Picard backed out on the planet, on planet Earth, offered the riskiest sip of tea in history as they toast to the tragic destruction of the USS Horatio.
Starting point is 00:37:15 What's amazing about this moment is that he still drinks the tea. Like there's a moment of pause where you're like, oh, thank God, Picard obviously isn't going to drink. this clearly poisoned tea. And then he does. It's like... What makes him drink it? They did talk up how good the tea is. It's Andonian tea.
Starting point is 00:37:37 And I couldn't help but wonder if the guy that played the Vulcan Admiral missed red Andorian, like the R looked like an end to him. So he just delivered the line wrong. But I... Like he tries to use asking questions about the Horatio
Starting point is 00:37:56 as an excuse to take the glass away from his lips? Like, oh, yeah, I've been meaning to ask, like any intelligence on what happened with the Horatio, and they're like extreme negligence, and Picard's like, good enough for me, sip. Especially because they're talking about one of his best friends, that should be the line that makes you throw the glass of tea across the room and start kicking.
Starting point is 00:38:21 Yeah, the highest kicks you can muster. Yeah. Back in Quinn's quarter, It's Wharf and Jordy that are the first responders here. And Quinn makes up some bullshit like, he fell! And then you can't leave the scene of an accident like he attempts to. And that gets Jordy thrown through the doors of these quarters in slow motion. It almost seems like Quinn is excited to try his strength out on Wharf.
Starting point is 00:38:52 I could snap your neck in a second, but it wouldn't be as much fun. A second brutal fight starts with Worf delivering some Kirkchaps to Quinn, who tosses him across a different table that is not made of glass. And then it sort of looks like he's going over there to finish Worf off when a phaser beam comes from out in the hallway through the door that was destroyed by Jordy being thrown through it. And that's Dr. Crusher, just beaming him over and over again with that, phaser until he goes down. I low-key think this moment has a detail you've got to consider because up until now,
Starting point is 00:39:37 I think you could presume that what's taken over Starfleet is interested in their strategic value, maybe absent any other feelings about Starfleet or the Federation or whatever. But when the shit talking by Quinn starts, it really changes the vibe of what's going on here, right? Like, this isn't just some superior form of life looking to multiply and control territory. Like, they actually hate everyone else. And that detail, I think, for as often as I've watched this episode, is something that that seemed very clear in this rewatch, is, is like they are not only interested in taking. They're interested in hating, too. Yeah, they're taking it because they're mad at you.
Starting point is 00:40:26 In Six Bay, they have Quinn down on a biobed. Like, Worf has asked what I think is a good question. What is he? And when they take Quinn down there, they do the scan and they're like, it's Quinn. This is Quinn, for sure. So Jordy is going to head back to the bridge and Worf will hang out for increased security when they roll Quinn over to give him a hypospray and notice what's poking out the back of his neck.
Starting point is 00:40:58 Aren't you glad that, you know, the rollover doesn't allow for the administration of like a booster hypo spray and there's like a red nub and bug down there, you know, for the rectal nub and bug. And then the blue ones are the ones that go in the mouth. You got to keep those two apart, Ben. You can't confuse them. You cannot confuse them.
Starting point is 00:41:23 Down at HQ, everyone's really getting ripped, thinking about that horatio. And the idea of conspiracies are brought up. Like, yeah, it's such a, it's so, like, weird how, like, you, like, if you believe at them, you're crazy. But then, you know, if you don't believe them and they turn out to be true, you seem like an idiot. So many guys on YouTube that seem like they might be getting rich off of them. And it's like, do you really believe? believe it or do you just like the bag? Anyways, dinner is served.
Starting point is 00:41:54 And Picard's like, oh, let me call Riker and let him know, just so that his food doesn't get cold or dead, depending. I'll let him know it's dinner time. And when he calls up, Crusher picks up Riker's phone. Not a thing that happens to too much in Star Trek, but it's one of those little details that really serves how unusual things are unraveling in this episode. It's not Riker that picks up. It's Dr. Crusher.
Starting point is 00:42:28 We recently watched the soap opera episode of Star Trek's Strange New Worlds, where they made a number of jokes about people being not in a series of shots that were set in a room and then suddenly being there because it was like convenient to the storyline. and I think that the converse of that is this scene. Like, Riker is the one I really care about, but somehow, like, we've been scanning Quinn and discovering the nubbin on Quinn, and I haven't thought about him.
Starting point is 00:43:00 And Crusher is just having this conversation with Picard about, like, oh, yeah, we discovered these creatures that go inside the body and clamp onto the base of the neck and stick this nubin out. She's got some advice for Picard. card. Hey, so on that phaser, I know you're not packing. You want to set that to kill when you're shooting it. And we get one of the rare jump scares in Star Trek history here when we cut back shot reverse shot style to Six Bay, Riker grabbing Dr. Crusher's shoulder before we cut back
Starting point is 00:43:38 away to the dinner on the surface. Really great moment. Great moment, but don't sneak up behind your doctor when they're alone in a room and put your hand on their shoulder. Like, you can speak up and let her know you're there, Riker. I mean, for as rare as a jump scare is in Star Trek, it's also rare for a show's visual choices to intentionally mislead the viewer the way it does here. I think it really works. That is in spite of a number of things that I think are bad about it.
Starting point is 00:44:10 And it was genuinely scary to me the first time I watched it, and it's still like a freaky moment. If you're thinking that this dinner with the admirals is going to happen at like one big dinner table with maybe a lazy Susan in the middle, no, this is going to be three separate parts of a circular table surrounded by a bunch of office chairs. Maybe the worst dinner configuration there could be. But I do like the idea of a server coming into the middle of that configuration and plating things. I bet that's fun. That's the argument for it that I can think of.
Starting point is 00:44:47 I did have one work dinner in like I was at a conference with and gadget and like basically everybody was there from the company. So like the restaurant did that. They put us in a big use so that the servers could go around and just address everybody without like leaning over and like knocking shit over the entire night. And it worked. But you're like stuck. like the only conversation you can have unless you're at a corner is with the person to your immediate right or left
Starting point is 00:45:19 and if they get into a conversation with the person on their opposite, you're just like, well, I guess I'm just eaten by myself in a room full of people. And that's not what Picard wants. So he starts to back out of the room when he sees the...
Starting point is 00:45:35 I mean, if this is the appetizer, I don't even want to see the main course. Reiker and Reiker shows up and really insists that Picard try the protein of the future. What's a matter with it, Picard? No. Very grabby episode for Riker here, with the grabbing of Dr. Crusher, the grabbing of Picard, sitting him back down again.
Starting point is 00:46:06 When we see what's on the back of Riker's neck, I really like how different it looks. Like I both believe that the guy looking at it thought he was seeing his buddy's ass. And I also believe that they didn't do a great job mimicking what the gill looks like. I think it's also interesting that the choice about this alien is not so similar to the way the story tends to be told, which is like the body snatchers have some sort. sort of mental connection to each other, where they can sense each other's presence. This is not that kind of body snatching. This is not that kind of alien. Like, they ID you on site and by the stuff that you say. And the more arch you can make it sound, you're really going
Starting point is 00:46:57 to get in with them if you can do that. And now it's too late. For you, that is. Well, said, brother. Captain Scott comes in. She's been got and everybody has to sit down to messily eat their messy food, and then they start talking about how they're messy parasites who love drama. Yes, the one thing both races share is a love of theater, and you've put on a fine show. And that's why they set up this elaborate ruse to trick Picard to coming to them, which, I don't think I ever noticed this. There's no bodies on the Horatio, meaning the whole ship was evacuated. So they led Picard to believe that Rick's Trialis Scott and Walker Keel were all telling him about a secret so that he could be on the lookout for it when in fact they were already all infected. I never put that together.
Starting point is 00:47:57 That's a great theory. I think that's in there. Anyways, the nubbins are the brains and the humans are the brawn. I mean, except for the nubbins that go in through the butt. Those are something else. Those are the brown. Yes, the brains, the brown, the brawn. Riker has himself a big old fistful of worms
Starting point is 00:48:19 and he looks like he's about to start chowing down but he whips out a phaser and stuns the lowest rank officer. I think if you're Riker, that's a great place to start because you probably have to get over a mental block about shooting an admiral. Start with the other guy first. Yeah, yeah. This is a big fight with some physical action and some phaser action.
Starting point is 00:48:50 It sort of seems like the Vulcan is trying to neck pinch Riker, but like can't do it properly because he's not fully Vulcan. That's really interesting. I was wondering whether or not it was their lack of facility with knowing how to do that, versus maybe Riker is just a tough dude. Can you be tough enough to resist a neck pinch just based on maybe shoulder development? Right, right.
Starting point is 00:49:16 I mean, he's a practitioner of Anbo Jitsu. The ultimate evolution in the martial arts. Right. So we know that his upper body is probably pretty yoked. Yeah. Admiral Aaron sprints out of the room and down the hall and Picard and Riker chase him and double kidney shot that fool.
Starting point is 00:49:36 And he goes down. And every time they bean somebody with their phasers, the bug that they're hosting skitters out of their neck. And this last one goes under a nearby door. They follow it into the room where Remick is sitting in the same fucking chair from too short a season. All I needed to get me out of that chair was the thought of walking the decks in command of a starship. I got to wonder about the R value of these doors, Ben, if the gap at the bottom is thick enough for an oven to crawl underneath? Like, if you put a negative air machine up against this opening, you're going to find some leaks.
Starting point is 00:50:18 We're going to install a door sweep made out of silicon rubber to stop up these holes and improve the overall efficiency and warmth of this house. Boy, does Dexter Remick have a lot of stuff going on in his neck. I think this looks amazing. Like, it really looks like his neck. And then it starts, like, bulging and pulsating. I think over the years in science fiction, you see things crawling under skin kind of a lot. And you'll see that in the face.
Starting point is 00:50:49 Like, I know X-Files did a bunch of, like, under-the-face worm stuff. You'll see it in your arms a lot of times. But, man, the neck stuff is just a spruce. awful to see. And I think there's something about choosing neck and also the self-awareness to know that your effects team is only capable of making it look like this that actually works in its favor. Like, you're choosing neck because it's the most horrible thing to see. And the way you're doing neck is also a little bit clumsy in a way that serves the effect, right?
Starting point is 00:51:26 Yeah. I mean, this still looks fantastic. a way that like the extreme close-up on the bug that's moving that's theoretically on the back of Quinn's neck but is just in like a piece of latex with a wig nearby doesn't look great like that that didn't age as well as this I love that like it's just kind of like disgust that gets Riker and Picard to start shooting Ramek is saying you know like this could be great for all of us peaceful coexistence. And then when they see the motherbug, like, they're even more grossed out and they shoot that thing. Do you think this is the bond between Riker and Picard? Like, this is the moment that bonds them forever. When you wordlessly look at your buddy and agree that we got to
Starting point is 00:52:18 shoot Remick in the face and the chest and then the salacious crumb that emerges from the chest, Like, your buddies forever at that point, right? You're closer than friends, you're closer than family. And I will let him go. Deanna, is there a word for an imzadi who you would murder an entire species with? I read that in an earlier draft of the script, this was the motherbug of all of the bugs, and this, like, destroyed the species entirely. And they decided that that was too anticlimactic.
Starting point is 00:52:54 but like big, big conflict in the production team and the writers over how dark this episode is. I mean, you can sense that tension in its conclusion. Like the fact that we are told that Admiral Quinn's bug just more or less disappears from his body feels so unsatisfying as a part of its conclusion and then to double back on the tension in the story and go like,
Starting point is 00:53:26 oh, but yeah, data picked up a beacon that Remick was sending a homing beacon to attract the nubin species to Earth is like a double reversal. Yeah, like, did everybody that had a nubin get better? Like, is Walker Kiel okay
Starting point is 00:53:43 like on Ricks' ship where they all went, are they like brooming a bunch of dead nubbins to the airlock and like blowing him out into space? Like everybody on the ship was like Oh oh What happened?
Starting point is 00:54:00 It's just hard to imagine When you consider like How humans are obsessed with the things that attack them Like if we're talking about Pearl Harbor or 9-11 or whatever Like those moments in history where you were attacked by a thing And then the response that you formulate To whatever that moment is becomes a thing that you live for decades.
Starting point is 00:54:26 Like, our nation's trauma is not over and maybe never will be. And to think that, like, this happened at Starfleet H.Q. And it went completely unscrutinized. Like, the mystery of these things was not followed up on at all. This would be an obsession for Starfleet for years and years. It would have to be. It really feels like it would. There's a whole section.
Starting point is 00:54:52 dedicated to the nubbins, Ben. Yeah. Yeah. That probably is. Section 32. Yeah. Well, what a great episode. What a classic. It's so perfect. It's great. Every time I watch it, I just get so much out of it. But I have a big question for you.
Starting point is 00:55:09 Shoot. This is becoming a speech. You're the captains, though. You're entitled. I'm entitled to ramble on about something everyone knows. This episode is called conspiracy, and we have some discussion of conspiracy theories in here. I'm curious if you have ever been convinced by a conspiracy theory. And I'm especially curious if you ever found yourself later unconvinced or vindicated. Have you ever thought something might be up and then wound up seeing that thing
Starting point is 00:55:42 come true or seeing something that you're like, oh, I was totally off on that one? This may change FOD's opinions of me going forward. But I actually don't care. I don't think a lone gunman killed JFK. And I think it took going to Dallas to really, like, affirm that in my mind. Like, you see the distance of that shot and the idea of hitting a moving vehicle, a person in a moving vehicle. I mean, you see the Zapruder film. I'm not trying to make the case for anyone else specifically doing it.
Starting point is 00:56:21 But like the lone gunman theory to the JFK assassination is just something that I can't say that I believe. And I guess that means by default, I'm saying I believe in a conspiracy because if we're involving more than one person in that, that's what that is. You think a second Lugie came from the Gravely Road, what you're saying. Yeah, yeah. And I think that's something, I mean, I believe for a long time and then super duper believed when I went to Dallas. I don't think a lot about it honestly. Like I'm not someone who is haunted by conspiracies and think about them all the time
Starting point is 00:56:57 in a way that like, I feel like a lot of people are afflicted by these things in a way that that makes me sad. But I think that's the one that I can think of as an example is definitely one of mine that I believe. What about you? I mean, I think we'll be in a similar position. People will maybe judge me for this,
Starting point is 00:57:16 but I don't believe that the earth is a sphere. No, it's fine. Pelly is just driving us home to wherever the fuck home is. Yeah, I've had people close to me that thought that 9-11 was a demolition and not airplanes. And none of those people have ever recanted that, at least in conversations with me in a way that felt like they'd owned that they'd believed something that, I mean, I don't know. Maybe. Don't dodge my question, Ben. I asked you about what your conspiracy was that you believe in.
Starting point is 00:57:53 I don't care about your friends. Well, I guess I'm saying that because, like, I have felt, like, very acutely aware when somebody believes a conspiracy that I don't. And I understand, like, the impulse, too. Like, 9-11 was so traumatic. It, like, feels like there must have been, like, deeper meaning than we maybe want to give to the official story in the same way that JFK does. But like, I've never gotten, like, convinced of one of them.
Starting point is 00:58:24 Like, I think you could probably convince me of the second shooter theory of JFK if, if you sat me down. But for all of the, like, curiosity I've had about conspiracies, I don't know if I've ever actually, like, fallen into one. Hmm. But... Interesting. I would like to.
Starting point is 00:58:42 I would like to have one and then be, like, proven, like, so right. Like, yeah, there were lizard people. It was true. You know? I mean, I've got to believe that's a big, big seduction to believing in a conspiracy is like the vindication of that at the end. That's the dragon you're chasing. That's the good stuff. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:01 And I mean, I think that that's like what pulls people in is like feeling like you have special knowledge that nobody else does. And like you. Here's the thing. So few do. Yeah. Yeah. I have knowledge of a priority one message, Ben, in our inbox. I would like to learn more about that.
Starting point is 00:59:21 After we talk priority one messages, we're going to be playing a game, and one of us will lose. Priority one message from Starfleet coming in on Secured Channel. You need a supplemental income. Supplementalment. Supplement. Yeah, it's extra. By the interest alone, could be enough to buy this ship. Okay, Adam, promotional message goes like this.
Starting point is 00:59:49 Last time I did one of these, I didn't really get the bump I needed, which is okay. Huh. I had mentioned I was a V-tuber and that's like a warning, blah, of its own. I assure you that I am just a regular guy who wants to vibe and chill while playing my favorite games while having fun designs. I only seek peaceful coexistence. Also, Adam is so right. Star Trek Online is really hard after the character creator. I mean, I really wouldn't know.
Starting point is 01:00:18 I've never made it past that part. The call to action here is check out William Ambervane's Twitch stream at twitch. Twitch.tv. slash William Ambervane. That's Amber, spelled like Amber and V-E-I-N right after that. This sounds great. I know that there's a lot of people out there in the... market for a new Twitch stream, so go give Williams a spin, why don't you? Give him the greatest
Starting point is 01:00:48 gen bump. Yeah, he clearly took great umbrage with you not giving him the bump previously. Let's see if this one hits for him. Wait, this was my fault? I was addressing the audience of FODs, Ben. I don't think you saw me looking into the camera at them. Yeah, I don't know if I don't know if you saw what happened inside my brain when you said that. Ben, we've got another promotional priority one message here. This one goes like this. Friend to DeSoto, do you want to play guitar? As smoothly as Riker romances the bone.
Starting point is 01:01:22 Fretwise Pro, the path. Teaches you clear roots to the chords in any key, anywhere on the neck. That sounds pretty suggestive, right? That is horny as shit. I like it. Position paths, triad progressions, ear training, and more will deepen your fretboard knowledge. and help turn the music in your head into something you can play.
Starting point is 01:01:45 For Windows and Mac, one-time purchase, no subscription. $999, Canadian money plus applicable taxes at fretwisepro.com. Nice app. Good roots. Shitty parking. So there you go, Ben. Go to fretwisepro.com. Turn out to play guitar.
Starting point is 01:02:08 A instrument I keep putting up and setting down over the course of my life, just in a way that is not helping. helping me learn. Maybe this is the route I should go. Yeah, man. I mean, this is, this sounds great, like a kind of self-directed go-at-your-own-pace thing where you're able to just do it in your spare time. I love the idea of this. I love the idea of supporting a Canadian business, especially in these bullshit times. I hope a lot of people will go to fretwisepro.com. This is a personal priority one message, Adam. It's from The Boy. It's to Papa G.
Starting point is 01:02:46 Goes like this. Happy birthday, to the best nerd dad in the A-Q-Qad. My love of Star Trek wouldn't be possible if we hadn't marathon TOS to Enterprise when I was a kid. It's why there's production photos of Neimo and Shatner in my living room. And why the cat is named Roe. Road drop! It helped catalyze my love of film and TV, cameras, and color so much I have. abandoned stem after college to be an onset DIT.
Starting point is 01:03:23 Oh, boy. Like, the most, like, self-inflicted wound, Papa G could ever... Fuck! Fuck! Why did I show him all those Star Trek episodes? God damn it! Oh, boy, Papa G. Really pulling for you.
Starting point is 01:03:44 Our shared love of TGG is why you also get to... to hear Adam and Ben wish you a happy 65th, L-L-A-P Daniel. Happy 65th, yeah. Happy 65th, Papa G. Hey, we're not making fun of DITs. That's a cool job. It's rad that Daniel does that. I think the laugh came from a discomfort of how tough it is out there for production.
Starting point is 01:04:07 So that's all that is. Yeah, and the, like, relative low-riskness associated with a more traditional education to career, path like STEM. Right. Pretty great message. Happy birthday. If you'd like to get the greatest gen bump for your business, your Twitch stream, or your dad, go to Podshop.biz and
Starting point is 01:04:32 book a P1 today. We really appreciate it. It helps us keep the lights on around here. Okay, Adam. What? I have a game for you here at the end of the show today that I'm calling In Like Quinn.
Starting point is 01:04:50 Gregory Quinn memorably deeply affectionate for that little bug in his trapper keeper folder in today's episode opening it
Starting point is 01:05:00 in secret to lovingly gaze on it it seems like I have something that may have you asking what's in the box
Starting point is 01:05:09 I've put a Star Trek thing into my nubbinbug box from the nubin bugs we created from the original mold used in this episode a few years ago. This is a thing we see a couple of times in
Starting point is 01:05:26 this episode, and I don't think we see ever again in TNG. I'm giving you 10 yes or no questions. If you can guess what's in this box, you win. If you can't, I win. The task for whoever loses is to write a five-minute stand-up set for Riker Mullaney, record it, and release it in the bonus fee. I get 10 yes or no questions to identify what's in the box. What's in the box is something we see in this episode and no other episodes? I believe this is the only glimpse of this thing, a thing that I think we both really love from Star Trek, but I think it's the only time you see it in TNG. Okay.
Starting point is 01:06:08 Or if it's not the only time, like, it is one of the only times there is, and it's the only time I can think of, certainly. Do I get as many guesses as I want? You get 10 guesses. Yes or no questions. Well, yes or no question is different from a guess. Oh, yeah, you can guess as much as you want, sure. Okay, that's what I'm saying. All right.
Starting point is 01:06:30 Yeah. Can I just start guessing without doing the yes or no questions? If you want. How about one of those little keyfab phasers? It is not that. Let me see that several times in TNG. Yeah. I guess I do need to limit the guesses because then you could just guess forever.
Starting point is 01:06:51 I know, that's exactly where I was going with that. How about no? Okay. First one doesn't count. You get three guesses, ten questions to hone in on this. Okay, let's start with some yes or no questions. Okay. Is the thing in a box something that someone uses on this episode?
Starting point is 01:07:15 Yes. Is this thing used by a bridge crew person? No. Is this thing a medical device? No. Is this thing on Enterprise? No. This is not one of the questions.
Starting point is 01:07:34 This is something that is in that box, the size of something that is in that box. Oh, yeah. I should have clarified. This is a miniature representation of the thing. So not the thing itself. I don't have like a screen used prop in here. I just have something that evokes the thing. Would the real version of this thing fit in that box? It would not.
Starting point is 01:07:57 Is that four questions? You've asked five questions. Five left. Do I have one of these two? I believe that you do not have one of these. I'm going to make one of my guesses. Okay. Is it the chair that Remick sits in?
Starting point is 01:08:14 It's not the chair that Remick said so. I wish I had that. That would be cool as hell. See, now I'm struggling to remember the answers to the questions that I asked. This is going to be a real problem with someone of my specific memory. Is this item in the dinner room scene? It's not in the dinner room. Which would mean this isn't one of the questions.
Starting point is 01:08:39 It's one of the only two locations not on... Oh! So if it's not on Enterprise, it doesn't necessarily mean it's on Earth. It could have been on Ditalics. That's a direction you could head. Is it on Earth? Yes. Two questions left.
Starting point is 01:08:58 The only place not in the dinner scene is outside when they're drinking tea. Or when they're shooting Aaron in the butt. And they hit that painting in the back and it explains. explodes. Two questions left. Two guesses left. Full count. Is it in the room where Remick is sending the signal, the beacon signal? No, because there's nothing in there. Yeah, I know. There's a chair and a wall. I asked the question if it was, if it was something used on screen. Yeah. I want to specifically figure out if
Starting point is 01:09:44 is it used or is it on a person? Can you at least tell me the distinction there? Like it's being used by a person, whatever this is. I will give you this as the answer to your 10th question. It is being used in that it is being worn. Okay, I'm going to use one of my guesses and I'm going to say the fake nub and bug.
Starting point is 01:10:05 Not like the fake nub and gill. No. It is not the fake nub and gill. I do not have that in this box. And that would be much smaller than the box also. This is bigger than the box, and it is warm. Yeah. On Earth.
Starting point is 01:10:25 Earth. In this episode, and maybe no other episode, TNG. I have one yes or no question and one guess left. No, you're out of questions. So it's just final guess. Final guess. I'm going to say this specific Admiral, uniform, like with the dagger
Starting point is 01:10:48 fabric. You know what I mean? I do know what you mean. That is a great guess because this is the final appearance of that uniform until Shades of Grey. There's so many things about this episode that are like, and this never happens again except for in Shades of Grey. All right. Lay it on me. What is in the box? All right. What is in the box, Adam, is the action figure for Scotty's nephew
Starting point is 01:11:18 who gets killed in the wrath of Khan. There are two guys fueling up and servicing a shuttlecraft in the establishing shot of Starfleet H.Q in this episode wearing this uniform. And I believe this is because those shots are recycled from one of the films, those Starfleet H.Q. establishing shots. and this uniform, I don't think you ever see it in TNG before or after this episode. It's the white one with the huge red collar and the coil on the belly.
Starting point is 01:11:54 Wow. Well, that didn't feel deceptive at all. I didn't deceive you. We'll see what the FODs think of this one. I told you it was worn. Right, you are, Ben. I will work on a John Mullaney-style stand-up set. Yeah, it's a tight five from Riker Malaney. So it can be
Starting point is 01:12:16 as wide-ranging in subject matter as you want as long as it's the stunt guy that played Riker that looks like John Malaney. Okay, from that perspective. Got it. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. All right, Adam. Well, I had a ton of fun.
