Starting point is 00:00:00 Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, welcome to the Holland Highway. Hello, everybody. What a show we have for you today. Very, very special, special show. I have a very special guest. My cousin, Kevin Hearn, is here today. And the reason Kevin's here is because my cousin, you know, air quotes around cousin, we have put a rock band together called The Cousins.
Starting point is 00:00:27 We've actually been together for a number of years doing some songs, kind of kicking it around as a hobby, but we finally decided to put a real album out with real songs because we've been doing this stuff for a while and we thought, you know, maybe people might like some of these songs because we're happy with them. So we're going to play some samples of them today. We're going to talk about our music.
Starting point is 00:00:50 We're going to talk about our new album. We're even going to improvise some songs. We're going to play you some clips from the new album. Our new album is Rattlesnake Love. You can pre-order it at iTunes or at the cousins band.com. That's our website for our band. And we're just going to talk in general about how we do it, how we make our music, how we interact as family, as friends, as musicians, as singers, as writers.
Starting point is 00:01:19 The whole show today is dedicated to that. So let's sing along, tap your feet, bouch your head. this is the Harland Highway Sit down, strap in and tighten your diaper Come here, baby. You're about to go down the Harland Highway. No! No! I didn't bargain for this.
Starting point is 00:01:43 Oh yes, you did. Chick-a-chic-cha, chik-a-ch-choo-choo-main, baby. And the creature from all of us, baby. Please don't stop. I gotta see this. Ugly face Magnificent performance
Starting point is 00:01:59 This is the Harland Highway I hate you Well that's the way it goes What do you say We get down to business see the people walking fast I wonder why I ever said goodbye So the feelings that I have
Starting point is 00:02:47 Raidrops fall in an empty hand I'm the man behind the glass again Who am I? I'm alone again. Sunsets I might have known again. Who am I? Who am I? There it is. That's one of our songs, right, Kev?
Starting point is 00:03:18 That's right. Welcome to the Harland Highway podcast. We thought we'd kick the show off. with a little music. I'm here with my cousin, Kevin Hearn. Do, do, do, do, do do do do do do do do do do. Do you like the sound of that music. That's good, man.
Starting point is 00:03:47 Yeah. I've played that in a long time. I know. Well, Kevin's my cousin, and I'm his cousin. So I guess that makes us cousins, right? Makes us the cousins. The cousins. And Kevin's here on the show today.
Starting point is 00:04:02 And he's got his fabulous guitar. It's fabulous. What make is that guitar? Is that a Kmart? What is that? Pine Needle. A pine needle guitar. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:15 It's made of pressed pine needles. Boy, it sounds good for pine needle. I know. Well, they don't make them like this anymore. Wow. It's like a wicker guitar. made out of pine needles so sap sap it's sticky and hot heats up um so Kevin's here because we got some exciting news as I've been kind of you know eluding teasing you guys with uh over
Starting point is 00:04:39 the last number of podcasts uh Kevin and I are releasing a a an album right a music album yep like it's legit it's not even like a hobby thing. It's like, you know, it's like a real record called Rattlesnake Love. And we're super excited about it because Kevin and I, you know, we grew up together. We've been making music together our whole lives. And we've kind of, you know, we've had songs here and there. We've thrown them around, right? And we decided, man, let's put a real record out. So, uh, so this is it, man. Yeah, there's, yeah, some brand new ones that we recorded here in Los Angeles. And, uh, and some that we recorded last year up at my cottage.
Starting point is 00:05:29 Yeah, it's nice to have them all done, isn't it? It is nice, yeah. No, this is, yeah, this is exciting, man. Yeah, so we have all these songs, and we decided, man, let's put them out there for the world to enjoy, you know, or hate. Yeah, well, people can love them or hate them. Yeah, because, you know, people in life, they got to love, but people also got to hate.
Starting point is 00:05:52 That's right. And as Waldo Emerson said, do your work, and I shall know you. And as where's Waldo said, where am I? And as the who said, who are you? And as I said, can we please shut the fuck up and move on? Holy God. Quote, unquote. That was you who said that?
Starting point is 00:06:15 Yeah, I just said it just now. Holy smokes. Holy smokes salmon. Yeah, it's been, it's been so much fun over the years. It's been, sorry. No, how's that go? It's been so much fun over the years. All the laughs and all the tears.
Starting point is 00:06:38 We've been in the studio making our sounds. And now we're going to bring them to your towns. Nice. Right? Yeah. But see, that's how we do it. That's the fun of me and Kevin. Like we, all our songs kind of were born from just a little riff like that, right?
Starting point is 00:07:00 Yeah, well, you got to go back to, you know, Thorncliff Park in Toronto, and we lived together and had a four-track recorder set up, and we'd often just play and make up songs totally for fun. Yeah, we'd make them up for fun. And then as over the years went by, we started, like, you know, refining them. and then we thought, let's just for fun, like, run this through a studio, and let's mix it, and let's bring in some other musicians, and let's layer in some cool stuff. Just for fun, let's make a hit record. Yeah, just for fun, right?
Starting point is 00:07:34 Let's make a number one top hit record. And then we'd come out the other end and listen to them, and we'd let other people listen to them. And people were like, you know, that's not half bad. Harlan, you can sing. Oh, gosh. You know, I'm always a bit, like, weirded out about that. but in my head I feel like I can sing, but if people think I can sing, I'll take it.
Starting point is 00:07:56 I'm a performer, but singing is not the one thing that I feel super, like, confident in. I remember earlier in your stand-up comedy years, you used to sing when you wish upon a star, right? And people would laugh, but it was also a genuinely beautiful moment because you could actually really sing. When you wish upon a star. Yeah, man.
Starting point is 00:08:23 I used to do that in my act. You did, yeah. Well, thank you. I mean, you know, I love singing, but I just, I'm nervous about it. It's weird because as a stand-up comic is a guy who's been in front of the TV cameras, the movie cameras, a performer. I mean, I've performed, you know, and I just, singing makes me a bit nervous, but I think that's why I like it, too,
Starting point is 00:08:45 because it's challenging and and I only really like it with you like I love singing with you because we we kind of get into this this creative energy like tornado together like tornado you know what I mean it's like everything just starts swirling out
Starting point is 00:09:01 and then I get absorbed into you and then it's like I feel like we feed off each other we're like two piranas eating each other's fish tails I don't experience the wait a minute that was like deep and moving
Starting point is 00:09:18 and you're just like yeah not so much me what are you experiencing like what time's lunch great thanks a lot our one and only album folks we just broke up
Starting point is 00:09:31 hopefully we get back together on the air here not sure who quit me yeah I think I think the audience just quit it's like we were thinking about getting their album but they don't even like each other. Why should we? Wait, what do you feel when we play? Now I'm like, what's going on in
Starting point is 00:09:51 your head? You're making me laugh. Oh, God, the guy turns Italian on me. I don't believe a blow. But anyways, regardless of how we feel, we just keep making these songs, right? well yeah you know and it's funny because you always surprised me with what you come up with lyrically or thematically it always goes somewhere unpredictable it's like a country song or it's a rave song called power pound or uh you know a very um accessible pop song like behind the glass yeah that's the one we sang right out of the gate and and that's the fun of it too because a lot of bands have a genre, right? But we do.
Starting point is 00:10:43 We like experiment with everything. And if you buy this album, Rattlesnake Love, you will hear like a, you know, a really fun toe-tapping pop song. You will hear like a romantic, like, beach boys type song. Which one is that? It's Tropical Horizons. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Yeah, that one's like, like, totally like get your tiki bar on and take your baby down. to the beach. And speaking of a beach, we have like, we have like a 1950s like beach blanket bingo like rockabilly song. It's like a surf tune. And then we've got like like a Willie Nelson like heartbreaking like, you know, I lost my love song. Which one is that? You can lie. You can lie. Rattlesnake love to me sounds like a long lost sort of James Bond theme or something. Yeah. Rattlesnake love like that's the the name of our. on our album and that song's kind of like it's kind of this moody dark sexy like kind of i don't know
Starting point is 00:11:46 it's a weird song it reminds me a bit after we did it i went back and robbie robertson did a song called somewhere down the crazy river yeah i'm way down the crazy river i think i'll go down to madam x and let her read my mind you know and it's this it's kind of got that kind of dark moody vibe and and that's what i love about what we do because as you said I don't know where it's coming from and then it's same with your plan like I don't know where your sounds coming from but that's what I sang about the tornado
Starting point is 00:12:17 when we get together we just kind of seem to feed off of each other and these these I hope people think they're like cool songs come together you know and some of them are weird like we have a rave song on this album like we have a rave song called Power Pound and then a sort of a
Starting point is 00:12:36 electropop song called a attention earthlings. Yeah, it's a song about aliens visiting our planet. That's one of my favorites. Yeah, that one's really cool. And that one we just kind of made up on the spot. And, well, all of them we kind of made up on the spot. Rattlesnake Love features a guest appearance by the amazing Carol Pope, who is an iconic singer
Starting point is 00:12:59 from Canada. Yeah. She was a huge rock star. And she still is, but she hit her stride in a band called Rough Trade. in the 70s and 80s in Canada. And she was like, she was like one of the country's top rock and roll stars. She's a pioneer, really.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Yeah, and she's got a very unique voice. She's kind of like, you know how Stevie Nix has a very unique rock and roll voice? Carol Pope's voice is very strong and unique. It doesn't sound like anyone else. And the fact that we got her to come in and sing on Rattlesnake Love with me and you was just, what a coup it was so cool yeah she's a really cool person um yeah she's a great person really like
Starting point is 00:13:44 a sensitive soul you know she's she's really like a tender soul but she's also got this kind of dark side too so she's a really cool person to be around and her her vocal instincts are just like so bang on and and she didn't know me from adam that was the first night i met her was that the first time you met her no i'd met her before i'd worked with her before okay but i'd never met her and here she was. She just walked in, we shook hands and said, jump in the booth and suddenly we're doing a duet together. Come jump into this tornado with this year.
Starting point is 00:14:15 Getting the tornado, Pope. But she did. She's amazing. And it's funny because Rattlesnake Love is kind of a very sexually energized song. And you know what? Why don't we do this? Do you want to play a little piece of it? We won't play the whole song because we want to tease the listeners.
Starting point is 00:14:32 But why don't we pop a little piece in right here where Carol comes into the mix? and we'll give people. All right, so take a listen to this. This is Kevin and me and our guest vocalist of the amazing Carol Pope. Have a few minutes listen and then we'll come back and talk some more about our cray cray alb, alb,
Starting point is 00:14:53 which means crazy album, dude. I didn't get it. Yeah, craye, cray alb. That's what Drake would say. One day I'll figure out your gibberish. Well, you know, if you're having trouble, go hang with Drake because he knows what Kray Kray means. Hey, everybody, who wants to have better sex? No? Yes? Yes. The answer is yes.

I hope you enjoy this little clip of Rattlesnake Love. A candle flickers in the middle of the night Lover's twisting in the shadow lights. They do the dance that broken lovers do. Rattles
Starting point is 00:17:08 Snake romance under the summer moon Two lovers ride they kiss they bite They make love at the same time that they fight They call that the rattles Snake love Down in the bayou They called at the rattles Snake love
Starting point is 00:17:48 Down in the bayou Dancing to the graveyard Into the side To the cypress Danger in the air Swirling in the white mist Yes Oh my god
Starting point is 00:18:23 Oh that's amazing Are we allowed to like be like all up on our own stuff like that? Like can we clap? Well no one knows it's us unless we talk, right? Yeah, that's true. But we... It's those other people in the studio here. Woo!
Starting point is 00:18:37 Yeah, hey, but they sound just like us. And they clap like us. Foiled again. Tinfoiled again. As in, I'd like to wrap tinfoil around your head and throw magnets at your face. Not right now. I remember doing that session, our producer, Gavin Brown,
Starting point is 00:18:56 you and Carol were in the booths doing your vocal take. Gavin got on the floor and said, I've done a lot of sessions in my life, and this is by far the weirdest one I've ever done. What, Rattlesnake Glob? Yes. Yeah, I mean, and Gavin's a pretty reputable producer, right? Who's he worked with? He's worked with...
Starting point is 00:19:16 A lot of, you know, well-known Canadian bands, the tragically hip and metric, bare-naked ladies. Wow. By the way, Kevin is a member of the bare-naked ladies, just so you know. Kevin's resume, man. He's a bare-naked lady. He worked with the late great. Lou Reed as his band leader for the last, what, the last five years of Lou's life? Five or six, I think, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And then just, you know, constantly doing stuff. And that's where I get lucky because, you know, we just happen to be relatives and we hit it off musically. And so not only do I get to hang out with one of my best friends in the whole world, a family member, but also like Kevin's depth of musical ability and curiosity and ingenuity and it's it's so fun man because it's like we just we just don't know what we're going to come up with so it's it's i scored getting this cousin man my invoice is in the mail uh my singing invoices in the mail uh and it's much more
Starting point is 00:20:17 expensive for my charming vocal chords three four but uh where where can people get our album kev we should probably tell them because it just came out and it's like It's on iTunes. Yeah, it's a digital release or you could go visit the cousinsband.com. Yeah, we got a beautiful website. The cousinsband.com.
Starting point is 00:20:41 And I still, to this day, I don't know what dot com means. Do you? Does anyone know? No. Right? Someone knows. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Isn't it weird? We just use dot com, like everyday land. We don't know what it even means. That's weird. That's some alien shit, brosuf. Brocef, that's heavy It's heavy
Starting point is 00:21:04 It's like a crop circle Like what the F are crop circles Hey Brosef What the F is dot com Maybe you should go to What the F are crop circles Dot com What if I tried to go to
Starting point is 00:21:18 CropCircle.com And they both don't exist Whoa Whoa bro Let's just pause here And do a brosif together on three one, two, three, Brosef.
Starting point is 00:21:36 I wonder if that's a good segue into our alien song. Play a little bit of that. Yeah, let's tell them a bit about that. Because you kind of came up with the idea for, like, we went into the studio and Kev says, I want to do a song about aliens coming to Earth.
Starting point is 00:21:51 Tell them what was going on in your head. Well, sorry. You have no clue, do you? You have no clue. The guy just drew it completely blank. I just saw his face go completely blank. I really just wanted to hear you being an alien addressing the planet Earth.
Starting point is 00:22:12 Oh, okay. Yeah. And that's what we did. Yeah. So I cooked up a beat, a baseline. Yeah. And had you go in and address the earthlings of the earth. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:23 So we did the alien song. Hey, Har. Yeah. Suck on my silence. wow how was that it's good i was like what the 10 seconds a silence sucking that's one of the lines in that you know like i said we just kind of make up the lyrics as we go and one of the lines that i came up with when i was singing was just suck on my silence it's good which we just left in the song should we play do want to play that clip yes
Starting point is 00:22:59 where we kind of get to that point. Sure, man. Let's do it. Okay. Here's a clip from another one of our songs from our new musical album, Rattlesnake Love. And what's the name of this song? It's Attention Planet Earth. Attention Earthlings. Attention Earthlings. And then in brackets, suck on my silence. Suck on my silence. So here's a little clip. Hope you enjoy it. And understand it. peace from the planet
Starting point is 00:23:31 I want to be part of the earth community I want to clip coupons on Wednesdays I want to recycle on Thursdays on Fridays bowling and on Sundays I'd like to lay on your lawn chairs
Starting point is 00:23:53 Yes earthlings I may look unusual to you And of course my spaceship may seem funny. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. But trust me your legs, I am not that much different from you. My forehead bubbles. It's bubble. Bawbubble.
Starting point is 00:24:21 Bottle. Bumble. Rubble. Shut down the face. Suck down the drums Shuck down the drums Suck on my silence Well that was good
Starting point is 00:24:41 I still don't know what suck on my silence means Like hearing the song The clip didn't help me But that's you know We'll leave it to open and interpretation to people We're not going to understand everything Of beings from another galaxy say to us right off the back bar.
Starting point is 00:24:59 I mean, like you said, we don't even understand what dot com means. So suck on my dot com while you're at it. Should we give them like a little taste of like how we come up with our songs? Like we kind of just
Starting point is 00:25:15 sometimes Kevin will just start playing and I'll just start singing and then that's kind of the genesis of a song or we pick a topic like a girl's name or we pick something that might have happened to one of us do you want to just start like well you just start playing and i'll start singing and we'll see if we get anything sure har all right here's
Starting point is 00:25:39 kevin on guitar and let's see we'll just see if we can maybe we've even come up with our next hit right now two three four standing at the edge of the boy standing at the edge of the Walk Winter wind in my hair Cold water washing on a dusty shore wishing you were there years since I seen ya it's been a million years since I needed you standing on the edge of the boardwalk day dreaming standing on the edge of the boardwalk inside I'm screaming when you went away just the
Starting point is 00:26:55 other day or was it a million years ago when I yelled at you and you yelled at me and we cried in each other's arms I cut you free cold winter wind whistling down Cold winter wind ripping right through my soul But I'll stand here for a million years I'll stand here through all my tears Waiting for you to come back to me Come back to me. I'll be standing here on the board walk.
Starting point is 00:28:17 Right? But see, that's how it could kind of start. You know, you just play and then sometimes we have keepers. and sometimes we have crappy ones. So anyways, the name of our band is The Cousins. That's right. And we fought with it because, you know, it's like the Cousin sounds kind of homespun,
Starting point is 00:28:36 and we're thinking, well, should we have more like, you know, the electric skulls or the, you know, the neon ant eaters or, you know. I think Bald Baboon was one. Bald baboons. And we threw other names around, and we just kept coming back to like the Cousins because it's like, that's who we are. We're cousins.
Starting point is 00:28:55 And that's kind of the name we've been using all these years. That's true. So we just stuck with the cousins. And I guess, you know, our sound is, I guess if we had a hook, I don't know if we have a hook, but our hook is that we don't have a defined style. It's like, you know, a lot of bands, if you listen to their whole album, you go,
Starting point is 00:29:22 okay, that's that, like the Beach Boys from A to B, Black Sabbath from A to B, Jimmy Hendricks from A to B, but when you listen to our album, it's like, wait. I've always been inspired by the Beatles White album because you had the four writers. Yeah. And over the, you know, course of the record, you had all these different styles. Oh, really? Yeah, you had Blackbird, you got Revolution No. 9, you've got just a whole bunch of different styles. And I always loved that.
Starting point is 00:29:49 It made it interesting, more fun, more unpredictable. Yeah, you know. The White Album. Yeah, you should check it out, Har, a group called The Beatles. The White Album. We should do an album of the Black Lives Matter album. Why? I don't know, just like the opposite.
Starting point is 00:30:07 I have no idea. But speaking of the Beatles, we went to a concert and watched Paul McCartney recently. That's right. How did you enjoy it, Har? I loved it. I loved it. The Desert trip out in Indio, where they do the Cochette. thing and it was great man i was really i was really impressed but i want to go back to what you
Starting point is 00:30:29 said about the white album because that uh i think you're right i've never listened to the whole white album but if people want to get the tone of rattlesnake love it's kind of like they're going to go on a bit of a ride you know it's it's not going to be hopefully you don't get bored you know sometimes you get a band and it's the same sounding kind of vibe with each song maybe with ours it's a little more eclectic, a little more interesting because you don't know what you're getting. Also in this day and age,
Starting point is 00:30:58 you're not necessarily putting on a record and listening to the whole thing. You might have your favorites. You might make your own little playlist and mix and match. Yeah, but, you know, we get a real, I think we, you know, part of the energy of the cousin's band
Starting point is 00:31:12 is that we just get a lot of, it's so fun coming up with different genres of music. Sure. Or maybe you're having a nice mellow dinner part, and it's more a mood for tropical horizons. Or maybe you're having a party and you want to put on power pound and get everyone dancing.
Starting point is 00:31:29 Yeah, man. It's good. It's fun, man. It keeps me energized. But, yeah, back to Desert Trip. We saw the Rolling Stones. Neil Young. Neil Young, the Who?
Starting point is 00:31:42 Roger Waters. Whenever Bob Dylan would play as harmonica, Harland would say, man, this cat can blow. man that cat can really blow I remember the people in front of us like turned around every time I did it they were kind of like do you shut your face
Starting point is 00:32:01 I wish the cousins would shut their faces but anyway so we're really excited about our new album and we hope you guys enjoy it we hope you go pick it up like we said it's a digital album only so you can download it for now for now Yeah, you know, we're going to kind of see how people respond to it. Let us know.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Let us know what you think. Yeah, let us know. You can write to us at our new website, the cousins band.com. We have a contact page there, and you can write to us and leave us an email and let us know what you like, what you don't like. If you want to hear more, if you want you can leave comments to see if you want us to make a video for a certain song or maybe you have a good topic for us. Yeah, man, leave a topic. we'll try and write a song just for you. But yeah, we're really excited, so we hope you guys get it.
Starting point is 00:32:55 I don't know how much is the album, I don't even know. $537. Wow, that's a good price these days. So if you've got $537 just kicking around, download our album, how many songs is it? We got what, eight or nine songs? I think there's nine songs. Nine songs.
Starting point is 00:33:13 Man, we've been busy. Behind the glass, bikini baby breakdown. Well, I don't have to listen. Yeah, yeah. No, we talked about a lot of them. Should we play one more, like, little teaser track from one of the songs before we, like, close out the interview here? Sure, which one would you like to play? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:33:31 What do we do? We played Rattlesnake Love. We sung a little bit of behind the glass at the beginning of the show. Yeah. We played a snippet from Earthlings. Yeah. What do you think? What would be a good one to close out with, like, a little teaser?
Starting point is 00:33:47 How about a bit of Power Pound? Power pound. Yes. Power pound. Yeah, that's our techno dance rave. That was so fun to do, man. I think we laughed like 42 hours straight making that song. A little bit of history. Like, you know, Kevin, there's certain styles of music that Kevin's played and, you know, like any musician hasn't played. And we were up in the studio. We were putting the finishing touches on tropical horizons and Broken Angel, which is another song on our. album here, which I think you'll really like. And it was late at night, and I just said, you know what, go in, throw the microphone on. I've got an idea. We're going to do a rave song. And Kevin was like, what? And our engineer Kenny was like, what? And I said, just turn the microphone on. And we're just going to build this thing like lasagna. So I went in and sang all this stuff, you know, talking about power pounding, which technically we don't really know what that is. It's open for interpretation. Yeah, like people, everyone you say, oh, that's so sexual. And
Starting point is 00:34:49 And you're like, yeah, what is it? Is it in an dictionary? No. Have you ever heard it in a movie? No. Power pounding. And one of the lyrics in the song is I want to power pound your face. But what does that mean?
Starting point is 00:35:03 So you can interpret it any way you want.
