Find your local station for the Heard at Fox Sports Radio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Heard. You're listening to Fox Sports Sports Radio. Ah, here we are on a Friday. Loaded. Absolutely packed.
Starting point is 00:02:40 This is The Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, we are live in Los Angeles, which is going to be sunny again on IHeart Radio, Fox Sports Radio, and FS1. Joy Taylor is here. So fired up today, so many things. Game 1 in the books. Fantastic. Both you and I thought Toronto would play really well and probably win, and they did.
Starting point is 00:03:02 We got a lot to talk about it. So, first of all, Kevin Durant expected to return midway through the finals, according to Chris Haynes, who's on our network all the time. Chris Haynes, FS1 contributor. Kevin Durant's coming back game four. That's the best case scenario for Kevin Durant. But I want to get to this game specifically before I get to that. So let's talk about last night. Fairly predictable. Boogie Cousins going to play, not going to play.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Kevin Durant not playing. Toronto's great at home. Toronto's got experience. Toronto's on cloud nine. Biggest game in the history of the franchise. just a tsunami of energy in the building. Fantastic. Fantastic.
Starting point is 00:03:39 Facility, fan support. And Golden State had 10 days off and they looked like it. They shot 36% in the first half. They had 10 turnovers. They weren't getting back on defense. Their offensive and defensive rotations were totally out of rhythm. And yet, with six minutes left, they were in the game. Outside of Steph, nobody played well.
Starting point is 00:03:59 They did a very good job on Kauai Leonard. They did a very good job on Kauai. but outside of Steph, nobody really played that well. And for Toronto, everybody, everybody, their second best player, their third best player, their third best player, their fourth best player, their fifth best player. Mark the Saw at his best game ever as a Raptor. Seyakum was 14 to 17.
Starting point is 00:04:19 Fred Van Vleet was throwing crap up from all over the court. Danny Green had a terrible series against Milwaukee. He was good last night. So everything went right for the Raptors. Sometimes you walk into a building and you just have a feeling. This is why Vegas had them favored. It's going to be a tough one. And they were behind early.
Starting point is 00:04:38 And you just kind of felt it the whole night. It's going to be Toronto's night. Everybody was all synced in. They were rested enough but didn't have that malaise of 10 days off. And by the way, when you're an old team, it's not like Golden State was burning it in their practices. They're trying to get boogie healthy. They're trying to get Gigi healthy. So there's three reasons why everybody's going to say this morning, Colin, give Toronto respect.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Number one, Golden State's a dynasty. Don't bail on dynasties. The five times Steve Kerr ever trailed in the series with Golden State, they've won all of them. Very resilient team. MJ's Bulls were very resilient. Championship teams are, that's one of their strengths. They almost all have veterans. They almost all have trailed series. So don't bail on the Warriors.
Starting point is 00:05:27 The second thing is, Vegas had them favored in the game. and Vegas has this series going six games. It's not about beating Golden States. It's about beating them four times in two weeks. A lot of people beat Miami and Dwayne. A lot of people, but over the course of four years, it was hard to beat them four times in two weeks. It was hard with Duncan and the Spurs,
Starting point is 00:05:48 the Showtime Lakers, MJ's Bulls. MJ's Bulls struggled with Utah. Utah could beat him. Phoenix beat him. Seattle beat him. Portland beat him. Nicks could beat him. Couldn't beat them four times in two weeks.
Starting point is 00:05:59 The third thing is, listen, New England's been in nine Super Bowls. The NFL current dynasty, been in nine Super Bowls. Never scored a touchdown in the first quarter. Why? Two weeks off is a long time, even for dynasties and champions. Listen, 10 days off is double the All-Star break. You are not going to come in in rhythm. I thought Golden State's defense was the bigger problem.
Starting point is 00:06:24 I thought they gave up way too many easy baskets, missed assignments. I thought their defense was poor. Offensively, they'll be fine. They're the warriors. Now, there are two things for Toronto that are real, and these are not going to go away. Number one, there's a word in the NBA that fans never talk about,
Starting point is 00:06:44 but it's all scouts talk about, and that word is length. Toronto is long. Seyakum and Gassal and Danny Green's long for a guard, and Ibaka and Kauai. They're long. And what does that mean? They make you take more difficult shots. They change the trajectory of your shot.
Starting point is 00:07:07 That kind of length. They get tipped passes, tipped balls, the second rebound. Toronto's really long. And I know it doesn't really matter, but the longest team I've ever seen in NBA history was Jordan's Bulls. They would have Pippin was long. And Harper and Rodman and Coo Coach. outside of Steve Kerr, just arms everywhere,
Starting point is 00:07:29 tipped, passes, everywhere, second shot. That's not going away. Golden State's not going to shoot 60% in any of these games. They're going to make Golden State change the trajectory down low, perimeter. That's a real thing with Toronto. You saw that against Milwaukee, Orlando, and Philadelphia. They got guys out of their rhythm. Here's the second thing about Toronto, and this isn't going away.
Starting point is 00:07:49 They're resilient as hell. They trailed Orlando-10. They trailed the Sixers 2-1. They trail Milwaukee to a. This is the advantage of veteran teams. That's why I didn't buy into Denver. It's why I didn't buy any Milwaukee yet. They're just too young.
Starting point is 00:08:02 You know, it's just like life. You know, my 18-year-old daughter, you know, she doesn't have that resilience built up. You know, a bad Instagram photo can wreck her afternoon. You get older in life. Things that your house has to catch on fire for you to go crazy. Like, right? Veteran NBA teams have a certain resilience. Gassal's been in a lot of games.
Starting point is 00:08:24 Co-I's been in a lot of games. Ibaka, Kyle Lowry. These guys have been in big playoff games, home road. So those two things, they have real length, and that's going to give Golden State some offensive issues the whole series. It's real. And they're resilient. They've got a bunch of old guys.
Starting point is 00:08:41 They're a lot of 29, 30, 31 guys who have played in the playoffs. So Toronto's feisty, resilient, tough. I still like Golden State in this series. And I'll get to the Kevin Durant coming back in game for in a couple of minutes. but I do want to talk about this as I'm watching the game. I am not a tax gypsy. I can do this show. If it wasn't simulcast, I could do it in Wyoming, no state tax.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I could do it in New Hampshire, no state tax. I live in California. I just moved from Connecticut. It's not the two highest tax states in the country. I'm not a tax gypsy. Okay, I just want to live where I want to live. I live by a beach. I don't want to have it 29 degrees in October.
Starting point is 00:09:17 So, okay, I'm somebody that doesn't worry too much about taxes. but I do think if I was a pro athlete, I think about it a lot. Because as a pro athlete, I got like two contracts to make real money. That's it. I've already had 12 in my life. I could have another five, right? Pro athletes had the first contract you don't make much. Team controls it.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Second and third you make a lot. And by the fourth, you could be old and hurt. So I just want you to think about this. Story out this morning, Kauai Leonard dealing with knee tendonitis. Oh, okay. I know we all think Kauai Leonard's going to stay or leave Toronto based on winning and losing. Let me just remind everybody. He left $31 million on the table leaving San Antonio.
Starting point is 00:10:09 Are we all sure this isn't going to come down to dollars? If he left Canada to go to the Clippers, he'd give up $49 million. I've got to be honest with you. I'm a pro athlete. no way in you know what I'm giving up 80 million. And again, I'm not a tax gypsy. But Toronto's well run. Toronto's got a good roster.
Starting point is 00:10:34 It's Toronto. He can kind of hide, right? It's a hockey country. I'm sitting there last night and I'm like, never forget, the Raptors were totally cool with him sitting out 20 games. Non-issue. Not an issue. Didn't like that in San Antonio.
Starting point is 00:10:52 None issue. Secondly, Toronto's already said, $20 million penhouse free. Food. Kauai and dine, free. Don't kid yourself. That stuff matters. Nobody likes free stuff more than celebrities. It's amazing.
Starting point is 00:11:09 You could give a George Clooney a free coffee mug. They'll run across the street and traffic for it. Celebrities love free stuff. Here's a $20 million penhouse for free. You don't think that has a little, oh, me have to think about that. Here's the other thing. The East is a lot easier than the West. Kauai plays hard.
Starting point is 00:11:31 Kauai's not going to last forever. Kauai's already missed an entire season almost with injuries. Are we sure he's going to give up 80 large? Now, I will tell you this. I don't think he should have ever left San Antonio. I really think he made a mistake. They let him rest, great owner, no state tax. He can be quiet.
Starting point is 00:11:49 I mean, I actually think San Antonio was perfect for Kauai Leonard, but that's over. And it didn't work out, and he left. And it says nothing against the Clippers. But Paul George, who had had injuries, stayed in Oklahoma City, even though he was from L.A. Kevin Durant, according to Rick Buecker, is fluctuating back and forth on leaving Golden State due to his most recent. an injury. Kauai Leonard's got tendinitis. He's dealing with 10.
Starting point is 00:12:24 Are we sure he's not thinking, do I want to give up $80 million? I can't do this forever. He's already got a house in L.A. He already bought it. It's already done. You know, I'm sitting there watching this thing last night, and, you know, we are all caught up because it's not our money.
Starting point is 00:12:40 We're all cut off, but, oh, you got to go, is Kauai Leonard really an L.A. guy? It's not like he's, you know, he's got this, like, Shack, when he went to Orlando to L.A., you're like, Shaq wanted to be a movie star. He wanted to be a hip-hop star. Orlando was too small for Shaq. Shack had so many aspirations.
Starting point is 00:12:59 And now you see him. He's on every TV commercial. Blake Griffin, like he wanted to be in L.A. Blake Griffin had, you know, stand-up comedy, real estate. He had aspirations, TV shows, podcasts. Kauai. I could argue the perfect place for Kauai was San Antonio. the city in Texas that doesn't get a lot of fanfare.
Starting point is 00:13:22 So I'm watching last night, and I'm just watching this game. And then I read that headline this morning and I think, we're not considering that money thing. And when these athletes, Paul George and Durant get hurt, one of the first things they think about is, I better take the guaranteed money. Kevin Durant right now would have to give up money to go to the Knicks. Paul George would have a lot of money to go to the Lakers.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Kaui Lenders is going to have to give up, a lot of guaranteed money, guaranteed money to go to the clippers. I'm not sure. Injuries change everything. Coming up next, the team we thought was the second team in the NBA, the Rockets. Are they completely unraveling? Fascinating story coming up. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd weekdays in noon eastern 9 a.m. Pacific on Fox Sports
Starting point is 00:14:13 Radio, FS1, and the IHeart Radio app. Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect. We were God's chosen kingdom on earth. He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back. Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey. I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across.
Starting point is 00:14:44 When Jacob met Levant this went to a billion-dollar fraud. But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive? The largest tax investigation in American history. You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me? Jacob told Levan, you're ruining my life. Listen to Kingdom of Fraud on the I-Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Life throws hurdles big and small.
Starting point is 00:15:19 The question is, how do you conquer them? On hurdle with Emily Abadi, we sit down with the most inspiring women in sports and wellness, professional athletes, coaches, and Olympic champions to talk about the challenges that shaped them and the mindset that keeps them going from the WMBA standout Kate Martin and rising hockey star Lela Edwards. If a boy can do it, I don't see why a girl can't. I've never understood that. Like, it didn't make sense in my brain.
Starting point is 00:15:43 It's hard to be in spaces that no one looks like you, but don't ever feel like you don't Don't belong. Don't let that be the reason you don't do it. An Olympic champs Gabby Thomas and Katie Ladecki. The ability to show gold medal to someone and have their face light up and smile, that means the world to me. And that's what motivates me to win more gold medals. At our level, at this scale, like being able to fail in front of the entire world. Like, I can do anything. I can do anything. Because resilience isn't just about winning. It's about showing up, even when it's hard.

Sometimes when we're in the pursuit of the thing, we get so wrapped up in the chase that we don't realize that we are in possession of the thing. and we're still chasing it and we don't know when we've done enough because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross,
Starting point is 00:17:52 because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro. Absolutely. And that's two different levels of trust. I want you to just really be a good person. Join me, Kear Gaines,
Starting point is 00:18:05 is we have real conversations about healing, growth, fatherhood, pressure, and purpose on my new podcast. Learn the hard way. Open your free iHeartRadio app. Search Learn the hard way and listen now. Great to have you in a Friday. Great news.
Starting point is 00:18:19 15 minutes. See if you could save 15% or more on Geico. Geico.com. Joy Taylor is joining me. Great to have you in. Chris Broussard. Doug Gottlieb today. Jason McIntyre.
Starting point is 00:18:29 We are packed today. A lot of different things. Coming into the playoffs, especially after last year, we kind of felt like the Houston Rockets were the number two team. They've got Daryl Morey, one of the top GMs. They have James Harden, MVP candidate. The Chris Paul Hardin thing worked,
Starting point is 00:18:45 Clint Capella. I mean, they, you know, CJ Tucker, they had Golden State beat last year. And then Chris Paul got hurt. They had him beat, right? It felt like that. But I'll tell you something. It feels like a little bit of panic. A little bit of panic here. According to reports, Mike Dan Tony has ended contract extension talks with the Rockets. Well, the problem is they just fired his staff. So how do you put a staff together when the coach doesn't get an extension? and has got a year left. So, you know, Darry is the GM smart guy.
Starting point is 00:19:17 He said this week, I'll trade everybody. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Mike Tantonie got his staff fired. Everybody down to the videographer. And he's not getting an extension. What good assistant coach is going to go, yeah, I'm going to jump on board for a year with Mike Dan Tony. The good coaches have jobs, and the good ones that lose their jobs.
Starting point is 00:19:37 That's not ideal. Number three, Tillman Fretta. went out yesterday talking about he and Daryl Morey, and in no uncertain terms, they are movers and they are shakers. We're going to do whatever it takes to be successful and be, every year the rockets are always going to be one of those teams. Okay, you're going to always, there's always going to be a little noise
Starting point is 00:20:00 because I'm a deal guy and he's a deal guy, okay? And we're going to always be trying to make ourselves better. That's what I've always done in my company. That's one of the reasons we get along so well. Oh, everything's okay. We're going to be okay. That's not the way I operate, and that's not the way they operate. Okay?
Starting point is 00:20:16 So every year, you're going to see us trying to make ourselves better. Okay, I don't have a problem with that. But there's two things going on here. Number one, Darryl Morey, he is over Mike Dantony. Okay, he's over him. Here's the second thing. This is something I don't like about analytics. It not only reduces players to numbers,
Starting point is 00:20:38 but it makes managers and head coaches very replaceable, very disposable, very interchangeable. And in Major League Baseball, think about this. 162 games, 25% of Major League Baseball managers make under a million. So the football coach at Boise State makes in 15 games, 13 games, 12 games, makes three times more than a quarter of baseball managers. And he makes more than all but about three baseball managers. That's 162 games.
Starting point is 00:21:12 They're irrelevant. The Yankees are paying Aaron Boone a million bucks. Boise State's football coach. Twelve games makes almost four. So this is what I don't like about analytics, but it works in baseball. Because in baseball, the culture of baseball is very rearview mirror. Tradition, don't celebrate, don't speak out, listen to the manager. So it's okay.
Starting point is 00:21:34 It kind of works in major league baseball to have the manager be sort of a puppet for the upstairs guys, right? But the NBA is different. The NBA is a star-driven league and should be. Okay, five starters, two great ones can change everything. God, in Toronto, one great ones changing everything. So for an NBA coach, if you're heavy into analytics, to be seen in the clubhouse or the locker room as a figurehead or a puppet
Starting point is 00:22:04 is a disaster waiting to happen, you need strong coaches in the NBA. Because to begin with the culture of the NBA, it's a players league. It's a stars league. I'm okay with that. Baseball is not. I mean, you know, baseball is about rearview mirror, not today, yesterday. Respect to the manager.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Good God, you had a home run. You can't even look at it. Basketball is not that. Celebration, players, gassed up, shoe deals, PR. If you have a coach in that locker room that's a figurehead, He's going to get trampled. I mean, Brad Stevens had power and struggled with Kyrie. Guys with Phil Jackson had two fistful of rings.
Starting point is 00:22:47 He struggled with Jack and Kobe. So you've got to have powerful coaches in these locker rooms that are respected by the star player. Greg Popovich. You know what I mean? This idea you can just throw a figurehead in there. And, you know, I mean, the GM's doing the lineup. It's all about analytics. Not going to work on the NBA.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Strong leadership. And so, you know, listen, it kind of feels like Houston here, a little bit of panic. Chris Paul's contract's getting burst by the day. We don't have the right coach. James Harden's turning 30 really quick. Golden states in the finals again. The window's kind of closing. Nobody's going to make a deal on Chris Paul.
Starting point is 00:23:30 Clint Capella against the Warriors, we can't have him on the floor. You kind of sense here. I'm not saying it's man overboard, but it does feel like the walls are closing in a little on Houston, a team we thought was the second best and may end up in the finals a month ago. Joy with the news. No, no, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 00:23:55 Well, the following statement is now true. The Raptors have never lost an NBA finals game. Wow. And Drake showed up last night wearing a Del Curry Raptors jersey. Oh, boy. Drake then put a little. extra sauce on it on the Raptors win by talking a little bit
Starting point is 00:24:11 with Draymond Green as the Warriors left the floor. We're showing the video of it now. Did not like that. And after the game, Draymond was not in the mood to talk about it. Just wanted you to talk a little bit about that postgame scuffle between you and Drake. You got a question about basketball?
Starting point is 00:24:29 It wasn't really a scuffle because I didn't hit him and he didn't hit me or I didn't push him or he didn't push me. We talked. We barked a little bit, but I wouldn't necessarily consider that scuffle, not really what I personally would consider a scuffle. Now, technically he is right.
Starting point is 00:24:46 I don't think anyone would consider that a scuffle. That said, it's a perfectly fine question to ask, being that they're walking off the floor and everyone can see them having an interaction. Oh, it's absolutely right. So it's not an out-of-line question. At all, no. Drake also had a little interaction with Steph, which in the video of that also,
Starting point is 00:25:04 and he took a little bit of lints off of Steph's hair, and then he posted it on Instagram, kind of trolling them. I don't like that. Saying that he put it on eBay and it's for sale by Dreyman, shouldn't wear 23. Here's the thing. This is all in fun. Everyone can act big and tough and bad, but Dremon Green was on the shop with LeBron. So for all that talk about their beef and him calling him a name and him getting him suspended.
Starting point is 00:25:31 At least LeBron's a player. There's no real problems here. I don't. I'm not saying there's problems. But has Drake become the anonymous Twitter guy who would ask for a picture outside the arena? Well, I wouldn't say he's anonymous because he is court side and he's Drake. So he's definitely putting his name on whatever trash talk he's putting out there. The reality is this is not serious.
Starting point is 00:25:52 The season is over and it's Drake. They're all going to be cool. There's not any real beef here. And I'm just not buying that from Draymond either. I just said he was on the shop. I'm done buying Drake's stuff. A week ago, you loved it. He was in the buff's head.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Hey, a week ago, I love my wife. What if I came home and she was throwing pots and pans at me? I wouldn't love her as much. Well, maybe you did something. I don't have a problem with this. These are our people, fans. Everyone has a problem with it because it's Drake and everyone has this feeling like Drake should be more composed. When I walk out in the public.
Starting point is 00:26:26 I allegedly talk to Drake about it, but he's not going to tone it down unless they tell him not to come to the arena anymore, which they're not going to do. I like my fans to be respectful at all times toward me in public. Uh, sure, but I mean, look, if they got a problem, they can tell him. I mean, you've, Steph and, even Steph, like, Steph gets pushed around by giant men all day long and pushes them back. Steph is a strong guy. If they really have a problem, they can let him know. But they don't because it's Drake and everything's going to be fine. It's just, it's a little trash talk and it's making the finals fun. Sticking with last night's game, Golden State sweep has officially been avoided.
Starting point is 00:27:01 All the gentlemen's sweep is still available and not going to happen. But the Raptors looked really good. Pascal Seaccombe. looked especially good. He scored 32 points on 14 and 17 shooting, eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. And just to put his performance into perspective, here's every other player to score 30 plus points in a finals game one within their first three seasons. Pretty good company. Karim Abduljibar, Jalajan, Elise Irving, Akima Lajuan, and Tim Duncan. Siakam is completely just... All-Star break on. He's an all-star. He's been an all-star level player. I mean,
Starting point is 00:27:36 He came from Noah. First of all, he played at like New Mexico State or something, so none of us watched them a lot in college, right? So he wasn't a high profile guy. And then early in his NBA career, whatever, something happened at the All-Star break. Maybe he had to die at Red Bull or something because he's like a different player. You're having a tired Red Bull right now? I'm having a tired of 17 last day. And by the way, this wasn't lucky.
Starting point is 00:27:54 Like some of his moves, he is hard to defend down low. He is difficult for Draymond because he's so long and so athletic. That one. Their transition, Golden States transition. and transition defense was terrible last night. That's a great move. I mean, it's just like you said earlier. They're so long, and he's so athletic, and he's just burning up and down the court.
Starting point is 00:28:14 It was a great game for him last night. Part of the reason why I was so high on the Raptors this year is I saw them practice together as a team over the summer here in L.A. A lot of teams don't do that. Their entire team was here. And Seaccombe worked on his game all summer long with shout out to Rico Hines, and he's really seeing the benefits of it now. And finally, neither over the other.
Starting point is 00:28:35 Odell or Levion Bell have attended Browns, the Browns or Jets' OTAs. And the fallout has resulted in Freddie Kitchens calling out O'Dell. And now Jets' defensive tackle, Steve McClendon is imploring that Levyon report to Jets' workouts. Take a listen to both of their jobs yesterday. I just want to see him. The last time we... A lot. The offense.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I talked to him, and I told them, I said, you understand. This place is different in Pittsburgh. I said, man, you knew you need to get back. and so you can understand the quarterback and the situation. Now, Leveon's a running back, so it's a little bit less of an adjustment, but he didn't play last year. I don't love this. By the way, I'm not anti-Cleveland.
Starting point is 00:29:16 I don't like the Levy and Bell situation at all. You took a year off, dude. The rest is not the problem for you. No, I think they're pretty similar because he did take the year off, like O'Dell being a receiver and Leveon. And Leveon is a receiving running back as well. And all these Jets and Browns fans, and the media gets really PC on this. You know, it's no big deal.
Starting point is 00:29:35 Tom Brady, stop. Brady knows the playbook, sort of. These are guys that are new to their franchises. And I really do think a wide receiver with a young quarterback, I think timing is a big deal, but I don't want to pick on Cleveland. Labian Bell, dude, there's messaging in sports. The message is we're all in together. I think this stuff matters for new guys on new teams.
Starting point is 00:29:59 I will say, normally I don't get caught up and who's at OTAs and who's not. it's a little different in this situation when you're coming to a new team as a receiver or Leveon Bell where you took a year off. That said, if they have to be there, then say it's mandatory. Just say it. If it's not mandatory, it's not mandatory.
Starting point is 00:30:16 It's like your boss coming to you like, hey, we have a new show we're launching. We have this non-mandatory training that we'd like you to be at, but you don't have to be there. We know that you work with your personal trainer on the side working on, you know, what you do for a living, and they're excellent,
Starting point is 00:30:30 and you pay them lots of money, and they perfectly put your... skills to test, but we'd like you to be there. If it's voluntary, it's voluntary. I understand it because they're in a new team, but it's hard to ask someone to be somewhere that they don't have to be, no matter how much money they make. There's a lot of things I don't have to do in life. Like, I don't have to make a big deal out of my eighth anniversary with my wife. But I do think for the camaraderie of our relationship, I should probably make a big deal out of our eighth wedding anniversary. Right? I mean, I agree. But there are things that are not required. If it's
Starting point is 00:31:03 required, then it's required. Yeah, I don't like it. Don't like Lavian. Don't like O'Dell here. Joy with the News. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. By the way, honey, I got you a beautiful gift.
Starting point is 00:31:16 It'll get in a couple of weeks. Let's bring in Chris Broussard, voice of NBA, FS1. Okay, I'm just going to throw my crazy theory at you is that Paul George stayed in Oklahoma City, and a lot of it was, comes off an injury and thought, I'm not giving money back.
Starting point is 00:31:32 Kevin Durant, I talked to Rick Bueger the other day, and Durant's having second thoughts because he's hurt and he's thinking, you know, that guaranteed money. I'm Kauai Leonard. There's a story out this morning he's got some 10 denies he's dealing with. He gave up 31 million to leave San Antonio. He gave up 49 million guaranteed to leave here.
Starting point is 00:31:48 Chris, come on now. That's 80 million large. The money, no question. At a certain point and I'm one that if I'm happy in a place, I'll take a little less than I could just get anywhere else. But 80 million? I mean, that's a lot of money. For a guy that's had injuries. Right. Right. So there's that. There's, what you mentioned is the team. I mean, they set what I think could be a bad
Starting point is 00:32:14 precedent by letting him sit out 22 games for rest. But wherever you go from here, are they going to be as open to doing that? You know Toronto next year if Kauai wants to sit out 22 games for rest, they're going to let him do it. So there's that. There's also, and let me, first say this. Gun to my head, I still would say clippers. Just because of L.A. Okay. However, you cannot
Starting point is 00:32:40 underestimate the impact of a bonding experience. People get married from a great month together. A great weekend together. Josh Goldman just told me a great night together. You never know. Watch out for Goldie. But anyway, he's one of our behind the scenes, guys.
Starting point is 00:32:57 This is a great bonding experience. That they're having. I mean, the crowd, I've been in that arena during the playoffs. It is incredible. You see Jurassic Park. Everybody in the city is getting free stuff, houses, food, getting to the finals. I even want to say, it looks like he's a little bit, a little bit coming out of his shell.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Yeah. You know, he's talking to the media more. He has to carry the load of being the man on a team with the media. You never know how this could affect the guy at 27 years old because. he's having such a great experience this year in Toronto. No, I think it's a real thing. And let me say this. I think Golden State's going to win this series.
Starting point is 00:33:39 But I will say this, is that because of the length, even their guards, Danny Green is long. Gasol, Seacum, Ibaka. And if OG Anmanobi comes back, that's another long time. Length forces you to take more difficult shots, change projectory. I did think Golden State was rusty. I do think they'll play better in game two. But Toronto's not shrinking. Listen, they made Philadelphia inept late in game situations.
Starting point is 00:34:08 They made, who else? Philadelphia a couple of times. Milwaukee was inept offensively. This is a defense that creates problems. Golden State, they're not shrinking. Like I can see Toronto giving them six, seven games of trouble. Yeah, I'm with you in that. I think they still win.
Starting point is 00:34:27 I picked them in six and still feel fine. about that pick. But Milwaukee, we all talked about how if they had gotten to the finals, their length would have bothered Golden State. And it's the same thing here. But the difference is these guys in Toronto are better individual defenders. I was surprised. And I'm with you. I think it was Rust last night. I think it was a little bit of complacency. Yeah. Where I think against Portland, Golden State coasted a bit, paste itself. We don't have KD. Our depth isn't what we'd like it to be. So we know with one or two second have surges we can put Portland away.
Starting point is 00:35:01 I think they kind of felt that last night. And Toronto, to its credit, wouldn't let them surge in the third quarter, which they usually do. So I think there was a lot of that. However, I was impressed by Toronto's defense because they have not faced a motion type offense like this in the playoffs. It's been one-man shows throughout the Eastern Conference. So give them credit, every one of those guys, Seacum, Lowry, obviously, Co-W.
Starting point is 00:35:28 why, Mark Gassaud. These are all league defenders at one point or another, and Seacom will be. So, yeah, I thought they played well, and I think it's going to be a good series. All right. We're going to stick around with Chris Broussard. We got all sorts of stuff to talk about. Houston feels like they're panicking and unraveling. We also have Kevin Durant's decision. I'm hearing all sorts of stuff that's fascinating with KD. Chris Broussard comes back after this. So we know that Paul George stayed in Oklahoma City, and many people suspect, and I think this is true, he had had a major injury, and Paul did not want to leave all that money on the table. So Kevin Durant now has got an injury. There's a report by Chris Haynes. He could come back in this series and will about Game 4,
Starting point is 00:40:25 which I let's start with this. It is the perfect scenario for him, right, to come back and save the team? Colin, I talked about the worst case scenario if they win it without him. The best case scenario is they're down 0-2-21. Katie comes back, saves the day, wins the finals for him, probably would be finals MVP if that happens. You erase that entire narrative that they didn't need you. And now people saying, well, if they were going to lose to kowaiwai,
Starting point is 00:40:55 in the finals. They probably were going to lose to LeBron, especially LeBron and Kyrie. So now all of that's going. The rings aren't viewed as cheap, aren't viewed as easy by those who have that viewpoint. So I would say this to Kevin Durant in that scenario. Stay at least one more year. If you come back, save the team and win. Stay at least one more year because now, again, you've erased that scenario. You don't have to deal with that anymore.
Starting point is 00:41:22 Why not go for four straight? Nobody's done it since Bill Russell, not Kobe, Shaq, Michael, Duncan, nobody. This would be your way. I've said for Katie to kind of getting in that top 10, getting to that top five maybe, he has to do it with his own team or just get out of the scenario where people think your team doesn't need you. If you can separate yourself from them by winning four straight, that's a way to get in there without leaving. And then if you want, you can always leave the next year. Right? Like you'll be 31 years old, 32 years old, you'll still have plenty left. And you get to look at the free agent landscape. Where does Kai Rie go? How do the clippers look this year? Is LeBron really fading? I could go there and save LeBron. Years ago, years ago, I was told by a manager the most powerful word in broadcasting is no. Do you want to be on this broadcast? No. And managers leave and go, wait a minute. Why? Why? Like it gives you power.
Starting point is 00:42:24 if you asked LeBron personally, and I said this at the time last year, I said, take the year off and just watch the landscape. Kevin Durant, by the way, one more year in Golden State, win or lose, all the big stars
Starting point is 00:42:40 are kind of fastened to a team. The free agent class isn't nearly as tasty a year from now. I don't think it's bad advice. Now, I do want to talk about this, is that we thought coming into this season and even before the series, Houston was the second best team in this league. I'm watching the last week.
Starting point is 00:43:00 Darrell Morey's like, I'll trade everybody. Mike Dantony's staff's fired. Chris Paul's contract looks worse by the day. Are they panicking? No question about it, Kyle. Like this is such a bad look. Number one, you never want to put your coach in a situation where you basically pick his coaching staff. I mean, you're essentially saying go ahead and get out of here.
Starting point is 00:43:21 So I would understand it if Dan Tony out of pride just said I'm out. I hope he doesn't, but I'd understand it. So that's number one. That's a bad look. Number two, why are you letting it leak that your entire roster is available? Okay. Why is James Hardin's name out there? I know it's unlikely they trade him, but he should be like everybody but Hardin.
Starting point is 00:43:43 And Chris Paul, knowing that the likelihood of being able to trade him is nil or very slim, CP3 is not going to like this. He's a superstar. He's not used to seeing his name in trade rumors unless he asks for a trade. He's on nine commercials. Right. Like, it's easy for LeBron and Magic Johnson to say to Ingram and know, hey, it's part of business. It means people want you.
Starting point is 00:44:10 Your name's in the trade rumors is back. Let LeBron's name get in trade rumors for real and see how much he likes it. Do you know Rich Paul once texted me? Rich Paul, because I said, you know, Maybe you have to consider trading LeBron. And I say this lovingly to Rich Paul. Rich is like, did I just hear you say good trade LeBron? I sorry, Rich.
Starting point is 00:44:30 I did me. I'm kidding. Rich. I mean, you're absolutely right. A superstar. So this is not going to sit well with Chris Paul. I guarantee you he is stewing over the fact that his name. He came to you.
Starting point is 00:44:45 He left the Clippers. And his name is now in trade rumors. You don't want me? Is it me? I'm an albatross. Houston's getting too public. Like there's a lot of them. They're becoming the Steelers.
Starting point is 00:44:57 It's like, stop. Stop leaking crap to the media. Now what I will get, the one thing I like that Darryor Mory is doing is I am, Colin, I'm not one of those guys that feels like you can't have a coach going to the last year of his deal.
Starting point is 00:45:11 Like he's a lame duck. No. A lot of people work in the last year or they're doing. I mean, my last year of my deal. Let's get that done, by the way. But I mean, the last year of my deal. Like, come on. If you can't coach your team because you're in the last year of your deal,
Starting point is 00:45:26 you shouldn't be coaching them anyway. I'm not with giving them a one or two year extension when you know in your mind this might be there last year. So I'm with Mory on that. What I think Houston should do, stop putting everybody on the market. Don't have these leaks. Let Dan Tony pick his staff and see if he can come up with some tweaks and changes to the offense.
Starting point is 00:45:49 get more movement player-wise, ball-wise, and see if you can do that. And if you can't do it in a year, we'll start all over after that. Okay, I want to go back to the finals. So your crazy cohort on radio, Fox Sports Radio, Odd Couple, Rob Parker, he thinks, he said something yesterday in the show. He said, listen, this is good if Toronto wins in the NBA, because it shows that you don't need five guys, what you need to star. Do you think if Toronto won this series?
Starting point is 00:46:15 And again, Vegas has it going six. We all kind of have it going six. I mean, Joy and I yesterday said, we thought Toronto win the opener. If Toronto did win this, do you think it would be, it would cool down a little bit? The got to have four stars. Could it have a resonance beyond just its series? I don't think so because, number one, this wouldn't be the first time we've seen this. In 2011, Dirk Novitsky was the only start.
Starting point is 00:46:43 Jason kid was old. He wasn't the Jason kid we all know and love. Tyson Chandler was. not a star. Jason Terry was a really good player, but not a star, superstar. So it was Dirk Novitsky beating three superstars. Two superstars and Chris Bosch, a star. So we've seen it before. Every Blue Moon, Detroit in 2004, won it without a real superstar. A lot of really great players, but no superstar. 1979, you know, Seattle Sonics, you know, that was your team. B-plus guy. Right. So this wouldn't be completely unprecedented, number one. So I don't think of
Starting point is 00:47:18 would change things. Here's the, and I debated this with Rob, super teams are not new. What's new are the player generated super teams. The Celtics of Byrd were a super team. The Showtime Lakers were a super team. For that one year, Philadelphia, with Moses Malone and Dr. Jay, we're a super team. Kobe and Shaq was a super team. The difference is that they were generated by the front office and ownership. What Rob doesn't like is players generate. Which, by the way, That almost cracks me up. It's okay if the old guy uses players like chess pieces. When the players like, I want to say in my short career, but it's like, whoa, whoa.
Starting point is 00:47:58 Hey, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar told Milwaukee, I'm out of here. People forget that. People forget that. And by the way, Milwaukee, to their credit, got a ton of good players for him. Like, they were good for years after that. But, you know, this idea that players, I always say this, we are so unfair to players on this. And I'm tough on players. I got players tweeting me all day, hate me, right?
Starting point is 00:48:17 But if my career lasted 12 years, you don't think I'd want some say in my career? No, you've got to be kidding me. Especially when guys have seen coaches or executives who they think don't know what they're doing. I mean, LeBron, we know he likes to be a boss. You know, he likes to run things. So he saying, why can't I put a team together? You know, everybody, these guys are doing it. I know more about the game than them.
Starting point is 00:48:43 Yeah. So. By the way, Lakers this year could use more, LeBron influence. Right, right. Okay, we've got a minute left. What do you make of this Drake beef? Joy is like, no big deal. They're all friends. I am never buying another Drake CD. I am over Drake. Go on the CDs, huh? My albums. You'll download, but no CD.
Starting point is 00:49:04 You know, they have a whole stream device. I am done with Drake trash talking. No more albums, right? No, I love it. I love it. I think Adam Silver said, look, don't touch anybody. Don't roam 15 feet up and down the sidelines. Other than that, you can do your thing. I'll give him a pass on the wristband because he was covering up the KD. Steph tattoos. Otherwise, that's mad corny.
Starting point is 00:49:28 Like, you might as well put on the headband and the shorts and be out there in full uniform, you know. So I'll give him a pass, though, because I know he covered up the KD. Steph tattoos. But I like it. This is Spike Lee all over again. Spike Lee, Reggie Miller. I don't like you trash talking, Steph Curry, and Draymond Green.
Starting point is 00:49:45 for game two he should be going at Draymond Hart Oh you're the best defender ever See Icom just destroyed you You can't shoot Try to get in his head I think Drake should do that in game too Almost convince me there
Starting point is 00:50:00 Be sure to catch live editions of the herd Weekdays in noon Eastern 9 a.m. Pacific Ah! This is the herd We're live in Los Angeles hour two Wherever you may be and however you may be listening Trotio on FS1. Joy Taylor's joining me. Doug Gottlieb, 15 minutes. We do our Jason McIntyre.
Starting point is 00:50:22 Tomorrow's headlines today. We're going to do that in 45 minutes at the end of this hour. So we have a great, great hour plan, plus our third hour, obviously. Joy, how are you? I'm great. She's wearing Raptor purple? Raptor Purple. Celebrating it. Yes. As I watched the game last night, and I do think Toronto's really resilient, and I do think Toronto's length
Starting point is 00:50:46 forces you to change shots. We just can't say KD's not there. They put Boogie Cousins in, and he had one brilliant pass, but he wasn't effective either against their pigs. And should Golden State be really, really afraid here? And I'm just going to throw a couple things out to you.
Starting point is 00:51:01 The Raptors are now 3-0 against Golden State. The Raptors are favored to win Sunday. They would be 4-0 against Golden State. Nobody's 4-0 against Golden State. There were teams that beat Michael Jordan's Bulls. Not a lot of 4-0s against Michael Jordan's Bulls. And if the Raptors won this series, let's say, in seven, they would have played nine times this year,
Starting point is 00:51:23 and the Raptors would be six and three against the Warriors. Is this going to be one of these moments in sports? And one comes to mind where if the Raptors win, guys like me are going to say, oh, I should have seen this coming. I'll give you an example. This happened back in 2010 when the Packers and Aaron Rogers won a Super Bowl. And I remember when the game was over, and I went back and I looked through all the games and the season and the stats, and I went, oh, God, I should have picked up on this like week 12. Green Bay was the best team in the NFL.
Starting point is 00:51:55 But Green Bay had only a 10 and 6 record in the regular season because they had a flurry of injuries. I swear to God, their entire linebacking corps got hurt. They had this great young tight-in, Jim Michael Finley got hurt. Their running back Ryan Grant got hurt. Their offensive line was all beat up. They were a mess physically. So you looked at their record and you went, oh, Green Bay is 10 and 6. But all their losses were four points in or less.
Starting point is 00:52:17 Two were on the road in overtime. One was to New England, and Aaron Rogers didn't play. Meanwhile, despite the injuries, they blew out six teams. Nobody blows out anybody in the NFL. They blew out six teams. And then, by the way, in the playoffs, if I recall, they blew out a couple of playoff teams. So when the season was over, I went back and I said, oh, my God.
Starting point is 00:52:40 You know, this is a team that had a flurry of defensive injuries. offensive line, their best running back, their best tight end. And every loss they had was like road, good team, overtime. You know, and I look back and I'm like, oh, God, that was the best football. Even though they were 10 and 6, it was a mirage. It was like they were the best football team in the NFL. When they finally got healthy at the end of the year, I mean, if you remember that Super Bowl, they were clearly better than Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 00:53:09 And so I look at Toronto, I just want you to think about this. they are 3-0 against them in favor to go 4-0 as of Sunday. If Toronto wins the title, they will not only be 6 and 3 against the Warriors this year, they will not only be 41 and 19 when Kauai played, folks, they were 17 and 5 when Kauai didn't play. Who's the only other team in the NBA that loses their best player? and kicks the crap out of people.
Starting point is 00:53:44 Oh, Golden State. So I still think Golden State wins. But there are these moments. They don't talk a lot. They're in Canada. They were 17 and 5 without Kauai Leonard. Now, I know it's the East and I'm not going to break down every game.
Starting point is 00:54:00 But I've told you this before. Very few teams in the history of sports can lose their best player and still be really good. The reason I think Jordan's Bulls are the best team ever, They lost Michael Jordan and they'd won 57 games. The next year they went 55 without Michael. One of the reasons I think the Warriors are the second best team ever, very close to the Warriors, they lost Kevin Durant.
Starting point is 00:54:22 They're like 32 and 2 without Kevin Durant. Don't forget the Raptors 17 and 5 without Kauai. This supporting cast is pretty good. I want to talk about this before I get the Doug Gottlieb. The Odell Beckham situation, I'm not a big fan of missing O-T, if you're a new guy. I don't like Levian Bell missing the Jets either. I don't like it. And Freddie Kitchens yesterday, the coach of Cleveland, a rookie head coach. The last thing he wants to do to O'Dell Beckham, who's been a little fragile, physically and emotionally, is to tweak him.
Starting point is 00:54:59 And yesterday, the rookie head coach came out and said, yeah, he's missing, I miss him, he's missed everything, the offense, we miss him. Freddie Kitchens did not want to do that. That's not the way he wants to start a relationship, okay? But let me, and I'm not going to defend Odell Beckham. I'm just going to tell you, I don't like what he's doing, but let me just say this about Odell Beckham. I don't love this, but this is his reality. He is the first NFL player to get an NBA shoe contract.
Starting point is 00:55:24 He's making a lot of money. He's the first NBA player in the NFL. He's global. Okay, JJ Watt could put on sunglasses and walk around Dusseldorf. Nobody knows who he is. Peyton Manning could put on a baseball hat, walk around Munich. Nobody knows who he is. okay O'Dell Beckham's in Paris he is a rock star that's what NBA guys are like that's what soccer
Starting point is 00:55:46 stars are like so the dude is global number one number two is global people actors athletes business people stars they spend a lot of time in two or three cities and in America the two cities they spend time in New York and L.A. O'Dale's got a house in L.A., he's got a joint in New York. Okay, so he's never even if he stayed for Cleveland for the rest of his career he's never going to feel like Joe Thomas or Bernie Coz are. Those guys aren't global. Odell Beckham is global. And this is not a shot at Cleveland, but LeBron
Starting point is 00:56:15 left Cleveland twice. George Steinbrenner left to go to New York. LeBron left to go to Miami in New York. Drew, Carrie left Cleveland to go to L.A. Steve Harvey left Cleveland to go to New York and L.A. Holly Berry left Cleveland to go to L.A. Jim Brown left early to go to L.A.
Starting point is 00:56:31 Bob Hope, Joe Walsh. The Eagles, Paul Newman, Terrence Howard, have all left Cleveland to go to New York or L.A. By the way, Neil Armstrong, he got so tired of Cleveland. He left too. He went to the moon. It's not a shot at Cleveland. It's not a global city.
Starting point is 00:56:47 And when you get to be George Clooney, when you get to be Steve Harvey, when you get to be Messy, when you get to be Odell Beckham, you're just going to have your reps, your shoe companies, your PR people. You're going to spend time in these. I mean, where did he vacation last year?
Starting point is 00:57:01 Paris. That's not where left guards in the NFL. O'Dell Beckham's never going to be the guy that hangs out at Shoney's down the street in Cleveland having wings and beer on a Tuesday night. He can't. He get mobbed. He would get mobbed. So he's bigger than Cleveland. And I'm not saying I like what he's doing, but he's much bigger than Lavian Bell. Lavian Bell should be there, period, the end of the year off. Odell is different. In my lifetime, there's four decades watching this league, there's never been a wide receiver. There's never been an NFL player. They've got a massive shoe deal. He is the
Starting point is 00:57:35 first NBA player in the NFL. It's a real thing. And I'm not defending the move, but I'm saying this is the reality of it. I never thought he was a guy that was going to be like, hey, let's go down the street, get wings and beer. That's not going to be his reality in Cleveland. He's not Joe Thomas. He's not like, hey, I lost a bunch, but I'm never leaving this place. I mean, when Odell retires from Cleveland, he is on that private leer three minutes later going to Paris, Zurich, New York, L.A., Silicon Valley. That's who he is. That's his brand. And by the way, because he's been injured, there's more urgency to O'Dell Beck. I've talked to him about this.
Starting point is 00:58:08 When you get hurt, there's more urgency. Like, I got to make good while I can't. I can do this forever. I can talk forever. Football players, especially guys that weigh 185 pounds coming off an injury, they can't do it forever. So they want to make sure where they land, they make the money. I just saw a commercial on Nike for Odell Bank. It's a great commercial.
Starting point is 00:58:28 It's got Sequin Barclay. It's got Khali Mack. It's got Odell Beck. It's a great commercial on the internet. But Odell's had a major injury here. And in his mind, he's like, hey, this New York thing was a waste of my time. We didn't show up in the, it was a waste of my time. He doesn't have time to waste.
Starting point is 00:58:47 They don't want to waste his time. So this Cleveland thing, I'm not defending him, but I'm saying this is his reality as a global American star. And Brady is a little bit because of Giselle. That's made him more global, right? People know who Tom is in Europe. Brett Farve could walk around Barcelona all day. Nobody, it doesn't matter. He's not global.
Starting point is 00:59:08 He's ours. He's domestic. So there you go. See, I don't hate Cleveland. That was very complimentary. I thought that was a great perspective by you, especially how bothered you are by them not being at OTAs. You're surprised that I'm bothered by that? No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:59:22 I'm not surprised by it. I think most people are bothered that they're not there. I don't like it. I just feel like if it's mandatory, make it mandatory. And as a married guy, I know that sometimes voluntary is mandatory. Honey, our 12th anniversary is Tuesday. I mean, it's, don't get me anything. Let's take personal mandatory out, because we all know that that's not really a spoken thing.
Starting point is 00:59:43 When it comes to business, I mean, if your boss has come to you, like, you know, we have this training. We'd like you to come to it. You don't have to come to it, but we'd like you to come to it. You feel like you don't need to learn how to talk on the microphone. You know how to do that. You've done it for many years. Very good at it. You're compensated well for that.
Starting point is 01:00:00 No kidding. So if they wanted you to come in and work with, you know, the right. rest of us. I bought an orange Bentley too yesterday. Right. Starting point is 01:04:31 Welcome back Doug Gottlieb, joining us to Dugger College Basketball and NBA, contributor for the athletic. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio after ours. Okay, here we go. I'm watching game one last night. It was 10 days off. A lot of turnovers in the first half that didn't shoot well. Some of it's rust.
Starting point is 01:04:46 But Doug, there's also the reality is Toronto's 3-0 against them. And you can't tell me that KD wouldn't help, right? Yes. I mean, yes, I understand the numbers, okay? But there's a lot of other factors in the numbers. I mean, if you go by the numbers, Luke Walton was a better coach than Steve Kerr with the Golden State Warriors. And we don't believe that to be the case.
Starting point is 01:05:09 Right. And in this particular series, the answer is absolutely. Remember, OG Anaboy is still not playing for the Toronto Raptors after appendicitis. So they still have more depth. I would say that a couple of things. Last night, there's an expression in basketball where the sins of the summer are paid for in the winter. Now, generally that means for players, when you don't work in the summer, it gets exposed during the season. But for teams, the Golden State Warriors haven't fixed their bench.
Starting point is 01:05:39 They had to kind of destroy their depth in order to get KD. Right. But they had drafted some youth. And, I'm hell, Pat McCaw left over $300,000 and his hurt ego, right? He's now playing for the Raptors. after Cleveland had him for a week. The DeMarcus Cousins experiment has not worked. Right.
Starting point is 01:06:01 Right. Now, you could say, how could you see that coming? But look, they weren't going to have him for long enough, and he doesn't really fit how they play anyway, offensively or defensively. So then you factor in that KD's out, and now a sudden their depth becomes even more exposed as opposed to Toronto, who, I mean, Fred Van Blyte was their best point guard.
Starting point is 01:06:20 He did their best job on Steph Curry, and he's an undrafted backup. Seacom is like the 27th pick of the draft who they've developed. This is honestly, this is organizational in that they added Marcusal late. They were willing to sacrifice some things to load up that bench to go for it. Whereas Golden State, their answer was, let's go big back, Andrew Bogot, who doesn't have it. That's why you're not seeing him, right? So I think somebody is the bench getting exposed.
Starting point is 01:06:49 Some of it is, this is a different matchup. Some of it is Seacom having the game of his life. He was making a running hook. Some of it was they weren't with the attention to detail. This is the bad warriors. A ton of turnovers. Lack of attention to detail. Right?
Starting point is 01:07:01 And they went right at Seyaka went right at Steph Curry every time he was guarding him, went right to him and shot a floater in the lane. And some of it is there was an unbelievable amount of energy and maybe a little bit of fortune. You know, the one foot shot from Fred Van Bleet and they won one game. I don't think it determines what the series will do. I think Kauai Leonard doesn't appear to be fully healthy and that's good news. but Andre Godala getting dinged up again, not having Kevin Durant
Starting point is 01:07:27 does not bode well for a seven-game series or a six-game series now that you're down one game to done for the first time in your finals history. Paul George, to some degree, I believe he stayed in, because I think Paul's pretty smart guy, and he knew Westbrook wasn't the easiest guy to play with,
Starting point is 01:07:40 but it was $40 million guaranteed and he'd had a major injury. Kauai almost missed an entire season with an injury. The body stuff's always been a little bit of an enigma. Now he has tendonitis. Listen, he gave up 30 million to leave San Antonio. He'd give up 49 million guaranteed to leave Toronto. You know, I know it's not all about money, but that's $80 million.
Starting point is 01:08:02 When I read that story this morning about his knees giving him problems, Kauai knows how hard he plays. He knows how hard, and he knows it, you athletes know your body. Well, he also took 22 games. This is after load management. Yeah, I'm saying, so if I'm Kauai, I'm going back, I'm thinking, what do I got left? Four great years. I'd rather have it guaranteed than go to the clippers.
Starting point is 01:08:24 It's something, isn't it? If you can go broke on $140 million, that makes Brewster's millions. You remember the movie Brewster's Millions where he had a month to spend a million dollars and he got like $10 million if he did so. I just, this is a different dude, man. Like you and me, we would never have left San Antonio. You know you're going to win. You're going to be well coached.
Starting point is 01:08:45 There's no state income taxed. There's some limitations, but you're always going to be in the playoffs. and he played for a great, great organization. I could argue that was the perfect spot for him. Right. And nobody bothers you or whatever. But because they basically called him a liar with this injury, he chose to jet. This is a different dude.
Starting point is 01:09:00 So in theory, on a hypothesis, do I agree with you? Sure. It's a lot of money. And you could balance out high taxes in Canada. And I'm sure there's a trade kicker for his, or an L.A. kicker for his new balance deal. You know, if you're in a bigger market, I'm not sure they sell many more new balance shoes, but it's probably written. into the contract, it makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 01:09:23 And you could be the biggest star in that country. Bigger than any hockey star because they see your face and you're just different. And you'd be a guy that turned down the chance to go home to stay, much like Paul George. But, I mean, predicting what Kauai Leonard's going to do, good luck with that. If you can do that, you're going to make a lot of money. A lot of money when you go to Vegas. You know, I was thinking, talking about Kevin Durant, is that I think, I had somebody I trust, deeply trust yesterday, tell me that Kevin is having,
Starting point is 01:09:49 he's fluctuating here. This is hard for him. He lives in the moment. It would be one thing, I just think it's hard to leave great management. Owner, GM, coach, dudes. Gold State's pretty darn good. That's why you told me to come here, by the way. That's right? Good dudes, right? Okay, so all the options are
Starting point is 01:10:05 crazy owner in New York. Brooklyn's got an overseas owner, not there, and they're the second team in New York. Kiree Irvin's a little flaky, do I want to play with him? Anthony Davis gets hurt, not really an alpha. I think I'd struggle. If I'm Kevin Durant. Of course. I think I'd be, I got to tell you, I think we think he's made his mind up.
Starting point is 01:10:23 I think this is, he comes back and saves the team. Well, that's the perfect scenario, right? Right. Let's say they're down, forget two games to none. What if they're down three games to none? Certainly possible. It's possible, okay? If Andre Godala doesn't play or isn't right, like, hey, that's, that Steph and Clay would have to go for 80.
Starting point is 01:10:44 They went from 55 last night and still lost. Right. combined. So let's say it's three games to none. And here's a guy who has been, you know, his insides have been like, I'm the best, I'm the best. Let me, people are saying they're better without me. To ride it on the white horse and to come back from two games to none down or three games to none down or even two games to one down and to save the day. Yeah, I think that would be, would that, would that, would that be enough for his ego? Would that be enough for enough people saying, you know what? Kevin Durant is the best player on Earth. And we did need you.
Starting point is 01:11:20 Yeah, we did need you. Then I think it's an easy break. Absolutely. Everyone wants to be needed. Everyone wants to be wanted. Third title, third trophy, I'm needed. Then it's a very clean break. Yes. Or clean break or reason to stay, right?
Starting point is 01:11:34 If somebody says, hey, dude, we need you. We need you. We don't just want you. We need you. And I actually have made this argument when I'm sitting in your chair that people forget the league was catching. Everybody's like, well, they won 73 games. Yeah, but they could have lost Oklahoma City, you know.
Starting point is 01:11:52 Yeah, they were down 3-1. And they were down 3-1 to Oklahoma City. And then, you know, they did end up losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers. So the league was getting closer. Yes, the Rockers were fascinated on how do we catch up with them? So it was everybody in the league. How do we change what we're doing to match them? And, you know, to me, I think they needed Kevin Durant
Starting point is 01:12:13 just as much as he needed them as a vehicle to put him on the same court with LeBron James in the NBA finals, and it worked out. Now, if everyone admits, we need you, KD, and you can save the day and win another championship, and we can't do it without you. There's something powerful to somebody saying, I can't live without you, right?
Starting point is 01:12:33 Sure, sure. I don't think anyone's mind is made up, especially when you consider, like you said, ownership in New York, that's always a question. Do you want to be? Kevin Durant cares about, being liked and cool on social media, right? Is there anyone less liked in social media history in an owner?
Starting point is 01:12:51 Maybe Donald Sterling, but he's completely, I don't even know if he's alive anymore. Like he's completely disappeared. James Dolan is the least liked owner in professional sports. You want to go work for him when being cool, being relevant matters to you? That's a tough sell. Finally, Houston Rockets, I kind of feel they're panicking. Now, they won't give an extension to Dan Tony, according to a story, but they fired his coaches. Good luck getting his staff.
Starting point is 01:13:20 It kind of feels weird. Like stuff's getting public. I don't know. Everything's going public. There's a lot of leaks here. This is what happens in new ownership, right? Owners own. And if you listen to Tillman Fertita, and I heard you talk about him yesterday, right, here's a competitive dude, right?
Starting point is 01:13:36 You don't win in the restaurant business, what is it, 80% of restaurants go under? Yeah. I mean, you don't win in the restaurant. business unless you're a competitive dude. And he comes in, he's like, wait a second, hold on, hold on. Two years in row, we lose at home. And our sole focus has been, how do we take down the Warriors? Our sole focus. And the Warriors are not just without DeMarcus cousins. They don't have Kevin Durant. And forget about losing in Game 7. We lost in Game 6 and we're totally healthy. Are you kidding me? Yeah. And then he looks at Chris Paul and says, Chris Paul is not going to be. Everyone thinks
Starting point is 01:14:06 that if the Warriors lose KD, they come back down to Earth. Well, the Rockets will elevate above them. But we just saw them play. We just saw those two teams matched up. And the Warriors are going to, if they lose Kevin Rand, they will add somebody to replace him. And the rockets are so stuck in Capell because of the Capella, Paul, and Hardin contracts, the likelihood is they can't add anybody. So I'm sure he's sitting there. I don't know if it's panic or if it's like, hey, I've seen it.
Starting point is 01:14:31 You think you can beat them this way. It's been proven time. And again, you cannot. Here's what I don't love, Doug. When you go heavy analytics, I like analytics. but it does reduce baseball managers to just basically puppets. I think that's okay in the culture of baseball, which is very much about the 60s, the 70s, respect the manager.
Starting point is 01:14:51 The idea that NBA players, it's a star-driven league, and I'm okay with that, the idea that Houston now is basically saying, we're just analytics and you reduce the importance of the coach to a placeholder. I don't think that works in an NBA locker room. I don't like this overly analytic thing. Analytics makes a bit. Aaron Boone's making a million with the Yankees. A third of what the Boise State football coach makes.
Starting point is 01:15:16 I want my coaches and managers. I think it's healthy when they have some force, some in a locker room. No, no question. And like, look, there's a lot at play here. I'll give you a really quick explanation on why some analytics don't tell the entirety of the story. All right. So the reason that a three is better than a hard two is because if you just shoot, better than 33% from three.
Starting point is 01:15:40 Yeah. That's better than shooting 50% for two. The math works out that way, right? So in theory, if you're six of 20, right, or seven of 20, seven of 20, yeah, from three point range, that's better than being 10 of 20 from two point range. Right. In theory. Okay. But those three extra misses are three extra possessions for the other team.
Starting point is 01:16:03 And oftentimes, if you're taking threes, those are easier possessions because they're transition buckets. And if they're taken from a corner spot, which is seen as a better shot statistically, now a sudden you don't have defensive balance. So the other team's not going to shoot 50 percent. They're going to shoot 60 or 70 percent. And so the analytics of offense work against you on defense. There's a smart way to look at it. And you also, players have to get in their comfort zone and their spots. And that's why we see so much mid-range game. Look, I think it's going to be fascinating to see what the Rockets do. Everyone says you can't trade Chris Paul's contract. Joe Johnson had two horrific contracts.
Starting point is 01:16:37 They were traded twice. Moscoff here. It can be done. Yes. You know, and let's say Kemba Walker leave Charlotte. Here's a kid from North Carolina. They could use a point guard. It's not crazy to think somebody would accept that contract.
Starting point is 01:16:51 Or, of course, LeBron James. But I think it's fascinating. I don't think it's panic. I think, look, dude, we've done this time and again. I'm looking at Chris Paul. He's going to be a year older. We can't play Clint Capella in the fourth quarter. We've tried it your way.
Starting point is 01:17:05 I saw you against the Warriors. and what they will look like without Kevin Durant on my home floor, and you got beat by 10 points in the fourth quarter. Enough. Make a change or you all lose your job. And the question is, all right, if Dan Tony's gone, how safe is Daryl Morris? Yeah, no, I'm, it's, you know, listen, they are interesting.
Starting point is 01:17:23 The Houston Rockets got a lot of movement and a lot of noise are interesting. So is Doug Gottlieb show after mine, Fox Sports Radio. Thanks, bud. Have a great weekend. Joy with the News. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the herd line news.
Starting point is 01:17:36 So going into game one of the finals, the biggest question was, do the Warriors need Kevin Durant? I think the answer has become a little more clear after game one, not to overreact, but they could have used some extra scoring last night. And before the game, in a sit-down interview with Rachel Nichols, Draymond explained how he and his teammates have to change their game without Katie. Completely changes. You know, I have to be more of a scoring threat when Kevin's not out there. I have to, you know, I really try to push the pace more when he's not out there. You know, when Kevin's out there, we all have the luxury of just saying, okay, that set didn't work.
Starting point is 01:18:11 You know, we still got this guy to just throw it ball to and get out the way. That luxury isn't there anymore. And also, I think, you know, with Kevin being out, we're trying to make up 37 points a game. Right. It's a different feeling. You walk into those games and it's like, yeah, we're very confident that we're going to win. But it's not as certain as it is when Kevin is with that.
Starting point is 01:18:31 Yeah, that's a real thing. He was shooting, Duran was shooting 49. percent on contested shots this postseason. That's third among players with 50 plus attempts. First of all, that's an amazing number. Kevin Durant shooting almost 50% on contested shots. Yes. That's an absurd number.
Starting point is 01:18:46 I mean, when you think about it, he's so long. I mean, he rises up. Like, who can, no one can jump that high. I told you my Mark Few story, the Gonzaga coach, was at a USA basketball, like, prelimb thing? He said, I was just surrounded by the best players in the world. And then there's Kevin. He goes, nobody makes a tough jumper easier. in the world than Kevin Durant.
Starting point is 01:19:06 His jumper has become Karim Sky Hook. It's just, you can't... It's almost an automatic. Right. So the Warriors, last night, shot just 23% on contested field goals in game one, just for contrast there. Clay was 3 of 12,
Starting point is 01:19:21 step was 3 of 11, and Drayman was 0 for 5. Now, I think we all kind of have a feeling like that type of shooting is not going to continue, but like you said, they're very long. They're a very long team. They change your shot.
Starting point is 01:19:35 Yeah, I don't think, I do think, I will say this, Joy, I don't think Golden State's going to have an artistic series offensively. I thought their problem last night, though, was their defense. I thought they gave up eight easy baskets. I think that part they can improve off. Well, the other thing that's missing with KD, aside from the scoring, obviously, is that they have nobody who can defend above the rim. They're playing small, but KD is there above the rim defender, and he's not there. He doesn't get enough credit for his defense. He's a good defensive player.
Starting point is 01:20:05 They're a long athletic team. They feel like they can get to the basket easily, and they don't have anyone there to contest their shot or to block their shot. So it changes the game completely on the defensive end as well. So for five straight seasons, the Warriors met the Cavs in the NBA finals. And after getting beat up by the Raptors last night, Clay blamed familiarity as the reason for the warrior's struggles. Very familiar with this team, but that's no excuse.
Starting point is 01:20:29 You know, it's still got to come out here in our goal. get one and it's still on the table for us. So I know we'll respond like the champions we are. Steve Kerr actually spoke first before Clay, so I wonder if this was maybe the story in the locker room because it kind of seemed to be the drumbeat last night.
Starting point is 01:20:49 And him saying that they're not that familiar. They've trailed in five different series with Steve Kerr as coach. They've won all of them. They've trailed before. This is not foreign territory. Well, this is the first game one that they have lost under Steve Kerr.
Starting point is 01:21:01 They won those previous 11. My question is, if you're not familiar with them, doesn't that make them not familiar with you? This series could come down to one thing and nobody, Doug Gottlieb referenced it. If Andre Aguadala is hurt again, this series, Golden State's in big trouble. I mean, that changes everything. That changes everything. The bottom line, he is, you can't make, listen, I'm not making excuses. I don't have Kevin Durant, I don't have Andre Aguadala, and boogies, come on, you got to give me something.
Starting point is 01:21:30 At some point, it's not an excuse. It's a reason. No, no, no. There can be excuses and there can be reasons. This not being familiar with the team is an excuse. Like, they are also not familiar with you. Like, that's how that makes sense. So you can't use that excuse. You've had nine days to scout them.
Starting point is 01:21:45 So that doesn't work. But, yeah, if Igadol is hurt, that's going to change everything. And finally, new dolphin, Josh Rosen, now finds himself competing in the AFC East. And, of course, playing in the AFC East means that you're going to go against Tom Brady. Yeah. And for now, Rosen says he's hoping to follow in Brady's footsteps. You see Tom at the line of scrimmage, Brady, and he's orchestrating traffic. He's doing everything super fluidly, like, because he's been in the offense for so many years.
Starting point is 01:22:13 So you can only kind of hope to get somewhere close to that fluidity in it. But, yeah, this offense puts a lot in the quarterback, and it's a challenge that I enjoy. Calling out the name of Brady. I like it. Saying the right things. You know, everybody thought Miami was tanking. They're officially not tanking. No tank for two of us.
Starting point is 01:22:32 I'm very excited about this. I think that the dolphins are a great landing spot. This was a little bit of a rumor about this when all the Rosen stuff was going on. But I think that Rosen had a really bad break his first year. I think the Cardinals got the guy that they wanted. Bad team, bad line. They were a mess. They had to fire their coordinator.
Starting point is 01:22:52 Listen, Cleveland was a mess, but they were a high profile mess last year. Arizona was as big a mess. You just didn't pay attention to them. No, because it weren't as interesting. But I'm really glad that this. all shook out the way that it did and that Rosen was saying the right things, then Miami is a good spot for him. Good stuff.
Starting point is 01:23:08 Enjoy of the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Heard Lye News. By the way, Uncle Colin needs to add some perspective here. The rating last night was a 10.1. Don't listen to anybody. That was a great rating.
Starting point is 01:23:22 You can't count Toronto in American ratings. If this would have been Golden State against Milwaukee, it's a 10-8. That's a great game-one rating. If it would have been Golden State against Philly, or Boston, it's an 11-2. The Stanley Cup final, game one, St. Louis Boston, you can count both those cities in the American ratings. It's got a 2-8.
Starting point is 01:23:42 That's a quarter of the Game 1 NBA rating, and you can't count Toronto. That's where you always get in American sports ratings. Your two biggest ratings are the two cities involved. So basically, you were down to one city, Golden State, and you got a 10-1. That's a great number. And by the way, there was an article,
Starting point is 01:24:02 yesterday and the athletic, that the Raptors now are getting more popular in Canada than the hockey teams. That's the power of stardom and seeing the players. Don't kid yourself. Drake's the biggest star in Canada. What team is he aligned with in Canada? The basketball team. A 10-1 rating when you can't count Toronto in the American rating system?
Starting point is 01:24:28 I would be overjoyed with it. It's down off last year, but because you head to American teams. That's the way the rating system works. Jason McIntyre is coming up tomorrow's headlines today, including what he thinks is a shocking move made by LeBron and the Lakers, and I don't think he's wrong. That's coming up. It's not that big of a deal.
Starting point is 01:29:00 Not that big of a deal. Well, Kevin Durant's out for game two. Now, Chris Haynes reported game four looks like the game he could play. And I do. I think we've all agreed today. We kind of feel like KD matters. This is Jason McIntyre, founder of the big lead.com. He moved off that.
Starting point is 01:29:15 Now he's making real coin. Fox Sports Radio FS1. We do stuff. Now, for our audience that's never seen this in the second hour, we do this on Friday. That's one of my favorite segments, where we try to predict what will happen. over the weekend and what the headlines in the newspapers will be like, you know, in the next 48 to 70. Social media.
Starting point is 01:29:36 Social media. So it's called tomorrow's headlines today. Let's start with this. Will the Warriors bounce back after that game one loss? You guys want to do your little production role here? There we go. Tomorrow's headline today. Will the Warriors bounce back?
Starting point is 01:29:52 I think people are underplaying how good of a job. Nick Nurse, the Raptors coach did. I believe the headline Monday will be. nurse puts warriors on life support. I like the Raptors in game two, Colin. I know it, Jason, you're overreacting to game one, but I just saw a lot of things that did not look strong for the warriors. Let's start offensively.
Starting point is 01:30:12 So someone put out this stat, 99 games for Golden State this year. This was, game one, was only the third time they had 34 or fewer baskets. Offense was a problem. I know people will say it was close in the fourth, Jason. If you look, they made 29 free throws. That's the reason the game was close. close. They don't have the offensive firepower, which leads to Mr. Durant. And Colin, you know, people could say Kauai might be the best player in the league.
Starting point is 01:30:38 He was five for 14 in game one. Agu Dala did a very good job against him. Yeah, that's the one thing that the Warriors did a really good job on throwing a bunch of bodies. And we knew they do it. They can throw Iggy. They can throw clay. They can throw people at him. Guess who would have guarded Pascal Seaccombe? Seven foot gentleman named Kevin Durant. So they miss him offensively and at the defensive end. Game two goes to the rapid. and this is 2-0. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 01:31:01 Okay, and that means Toronto will be 4-0 against the Warriors this shit. Yes, they will. All right. Tomorrow's headlines today, can the Warriors win the finals without KD? You know where I am on this. I've been saying on your show. I think for two years, Kevin Durant, best player in the league. Colin, the headline Monday will be stop KDing yourselves. I mean, we're getting close to putting maybe an asterisk by this series. If Kevin Durant doesn't come back in time, you can't.
Starting point is 01:31:28 This is a guy. Look at these numbers, Colin. These are staggering. In the history of NBA finals, look where Kevin Durant ranks, all-time leading scores in NBA finals history. It's Rick Barry, Michael Jordan, and Kevin Durant. I mean, we're talking about one of the greatest offensive players ever in NBA finals history. You take out 30 points, and now you need Andre Guadal to chip in 15. And I also think it's not just taking Kevin Durant out. This is a bad matchup without Kevin Durant because the dinosaurs, maybe T-Rex had short arms, but these Raptors don't. They are the longest team in the east.
Starting point is 01:32:07 And by the way, they gave Milwaukee troubles because Milwaukee finally met a team that had more length on the interior and it gave Giannis lots of problems. Remember last week the narrative was, well, they don't need Durant. He's a luxury item. I think you might have called him like a Rolex or something. Everybody overreacting. And I know the counter is, well, Jason, you're a little. overreacting to one game. But again, there are a lot of things better about this Raptor's team
Starting point is 01:32:31 than we saw about Portland. Okay, I know you know Portland well-being from the Northwest. Well, they got older. This team has older veteran players. And they don't have, I love Dame, but Kauai is a better defender. Much better. And listen, if Siakam is emerging as a player and Marcosol is going to have 20, you know that was the most points he scored since joining the Raptors? You know, Gazelle at his best game as a Raptor. Ever. I mean, Steve Kurt called them dare shots. We dare you to shoot that. And Gasol went two of four from deep. Just a tremendous performance. Tomorrow's headlines today, how will LeBron
Starting point is 01:33:00 and the Lakers escape this mess? I'm interested here. Pretty bad week for the Lakers. Kind of? There is a solution. I floated this on my radio show. Heard from a lot of people. They love it. The headline for the Lakers will be Pat Riley rejoins Lakers, LeBron. Now, Jeannie Bus, your pal.
Starting point is 01:33:18 She's got one... She doesn't like me anymore. She's got one solution here. She wants to keep the Lakers as a mom-and-pop shop. We want all Laker people. Linda Rambus, Kurt Rambus, Rob Polinka was Kobe's agent. Well, there's one guy who can be a bridge to LeBron, a bridge to free agents, and that's Pat Riley. He's got a situation in Miami where they're not going anywhere. They got bad contracts. Can you pry him out of South Beach?
Starting point is 01:33:41 Bring him back to L.A. This is the guy who started Showtime, Colin. Somebody told me he already has a house in Malibu. He still does, yeah. He has a house in Malibu. And the interesting thing is you would never leave when D. Wade was in his prime, right? But that's a new culture now. Once D. Wade leaves, it's just the new whole franchise.
Starting point is 01:33:58 It's not, it's not, by the way, throw this out there. Jerry West helping elevate the clippers. So don't, you know, Pat Riley is the best looking 68-year-old guy. I think of Miami. He's going to come to L.A. To be the king of L.A. What if he doesn't? If he says, no, you make him say no.
Starting point is 01:34:18 But I think he has to call him. But if he comes here and he doesn't fix it. Well, he's got LeBron on his side. He'd certainly give you a better chance. chance to fix it. He's super smart. When Rob Polinka calls free agents and their agents, there's going to be some laughing. He's making up lies about Heath Ledger and... Yeah, that was odd. That's embarrassing. I mean, when Magic Johnson comes out and says I was backstabbed by the guy running the Lakers front office, who's going to have any confidence
Starting point is 01:34:44 that he can get the job done? I do think that's about. I do think if you look at who will be in the room pitching players for the agents, it's not nearly as impressive. Linda Rambus. Well, I got nothing against Linda. I just think the colloquy. of people is not as impressive as West, Doc, and Steve Balmer. Just the last note, if you are the Lakers and you just call him. Say, Pat, we want to offer you the job. We'll pay you X. Say no to the Lakers.
Starting point is 01:35:07 Say no to saving the Lakers. Tomorrow's headlines today. What will the next headline be about Odo Beckham Jr. and Cleveland? Big victory for you this week with the Cleveland Browns. I mean, Baker Mayfield, O'Dell Beckham. I see the headline will be. OBJ makes amazing grab for a attention. I mean, this is, listen, the fact that your staff has counted that O'Dell's been in Cleveland
Starting point is 01:35:30 for three of the last, like, 77 days. Not great. That is staggering. I mean, listen, I'd rather be in Europe than Cleveland. He's like, it's out here in L.A., but next week is going to be important, because I do believe it's mandatory OTAs next week, right? Or mandatory camp next week, starting June 4th, I believe. And if O'Dell doesn't show up for that, after what his coach said this week, he will. He's got to be there, right? I mean, you can't know show that. Can I say this? I defended Odell Beckham earlier today. Is that Steve Harvey, Holly Berry, Terrence Howard, Neil Armstrong, okay, George Steinbrenner, LeBron twice.
Starting point is 01:36:08 There is a history. When you become global, Cleveland's a tad too small and you move. If Odell stays in Cleveland for seven years, he's never been built because he is global. He's not going to be Joe Thomas. He's not Bernie Cozar. And I'm not trying to give him a pass. but this was voluntary. I don't like it. But he is a global star.
Starting point is 01:36:29 If you put him in Paris, he's a bigger deal than Tom Brady. He's a bigger deal than Brett Farb. He's a bigger deal than J.J. Watt. He's global. Global people have a history in Cleveland. They can have a second home there. They can work there. But they spend a lot of time in L.A. and New York. Okay. My only counter is you just named George Steinbrenner.
Starting point is 01:36:46 A lot of big guys who've won a lot. How many playoff wins for O'Dell Beckham? Well, that hasn't been great. Well, it hasn't been great. He had one playoff game. He dropped two or three passes, and they got embarrassed after his boat trip. I mean, if you want to be a leader and establish yourself as one of the older guys on a very young team with, what, a 23-year-old quarterback, you got to at least show up and hang out with your teammates, build some camaraderie.
Starting point is 01:37:08 Isn't that the youngest NFL team? Yes, they are. They only have three guys over the age of 30. Yeah, it's crazy. That is so young. Just hang out with your dudes. I know you're going to beat, well, we got August to settle that. Okay, fine.
Starting point is 01:37:20 This is a young team. I mean, Odell's very impressionable. This is a popular guy, as you said. I'm not getting into this. I'll just say this. I don't have a history. Look at my resume. I don't get into Twitter fights with anybody.
Starting point is 01:37:33 Gottlieb likes that stuff. Nick Wright likes that stuff. Shannon likes that stuff. Thank you for not mentioning me. That's not my thing. And I'm not against guys that do. It's not my thing. So I have no interest responding to Baker.
Starting point is 01:37:45 That's not my goal. But I do think Baker Mayfield is doing a lot of yapping at me to take my attention. away from what I do believe is a little bit of an annoyance to the Cleveland staff, which is, where's our guy? The Freddie Kitchens' quotes were very glossed over by the national media. Not this host. Where is Odell?
Starting point is 01:38:05 Nice job by you on that, Colin. Very good week. Thankfully, I'm above picking on people. Otherwise, I can make this just a mess. Steve Kerr says Kevin Durant will not play in game two. He has still not been cleared for practice. That tells me if he does play It's game four or game five.
Starting point is 01:38:24 Jason McIntyre, tomorrow's headlines today. Great job. We are packed in hour number three. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week within the IHeart Radio app. Search Heard to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Ah, this is the herd.
Starting point is 01:38:45 Hour three on a Friday in L.A. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. Iheart Radio Fox Sports Radio FS1. By the way, Steve Kerr just got done speaking with the media. A couple of minutes ago in Canada, says Kevin Durant not going to play game two. Also said, Andre Aguadala got an MRI on his left leg.
Starting point is 01:39:06 They're awaiting the results. If the news is bad there, Golden State's in big trouble. And that's nothing against Toronto, but... Heard on Sirius XM Channel 83 as well. Joy, how are you? I'm great. That Iggy news will be... Everything.
Starting point is 01:39:20 Big. Very important. Best for last. There was such a hubbub over the spelling bee last night. I've decided to host a spelling bee of my own on our show in 40 minutes from now. Am I hosting it in your spelling? Because I was not consistent on this. I will do the spelling.
Starting point is 01:39:35 Okay. Very exciting and best for last. Okay. Kauai Leonard and the Raptors took game one over the dynasty, the Golden State Warriors. So let's talk about last night. Fairly predictive. Boogie Cousins, going to play, not going to play. Kevin Durant not playing.
Starting point is 01:39:55 Toronto's great at home. Toronto's got experience. Toronto's on cloud nine. Biggest game in the history of the franchise. Just a tsunami of energy in the building. Fantastic. Fantastic. Facility fan support.
Starting point is 01:40:08 And Golden State had 10 days off and they looked like it. They shot 36% in the first half. They had 10 turnovers. They weren't getting back on defense. Their offensive and defensive rotations were totally out of rhythm. yet with six minutes left, they were in the game. Outside of Steph, nobody played well. They did a very good job on Kauai Leonard. They did a very good job on Kauai, but outside of Steph, nobody really played that well. And for Toronto, everybody, everybody, their second
Starting point is 01:40:35 best player, their third best player, their third best player, their fourth best player, their fifth best player. Mark LaSaw at his best game ever as a Raptor. Sayakum was 14 and 17. Fred Van Van Vleet was throwing crap up from all over the court. Danny Green had a terrible series against Milwaukee. He was good last night. So everything went right for the Raptors. Sometimes you walk into a building and you just have a feeling. This is why Vegas had them favored. It's going to be a tough one. And they were behind early and you just kind of felt it the whole night. It's going to be Toronto's night. Everybody was all synced in. They were rested enough but didn't have, you know, that malaise of 10 days off. And by the way, when you're an old team, it's not like Golden State was burning it in their
Starting point is 01:41:18 practices. They're trying to get boogie healthy. They're trying to get Katie healthy. They're trying to get Iggy healthy. So there's three reasons why everybody's going to say this morning, Colin, give Toronto respect. Number one, Golden State's a dynasty. Don't bail on dynasties. The five times Steve Kerr's ever trailed in the series with Golden State, they've won all of them. Very resilient team. MJ's Bulls were very resilient. Championship teams are, that's one of their strengths.
Starting point is 01:41:45 They almost all have veterans. They almost all have trailed series, so don't bail on the Warriors. The second thing is, Vegas had them favored in the game, and Vegas has this series going six games. It's not about beating Golden States. It's about beating them four times in two weeks. A lot of people beat Miami and Dwayne. A lot of people, but over the course of four years, it was hard to beat them four times in two weeks. It was hard with Duncan and the Spurs, the Showtime Lakers, MJ's Bulls.
Starting point is 01:42:17 MJ's Bulls struggled with Utah. Utah could beat him. Phoenix beat him. Seattle beat him. Portland beat him. Knicks could beat him four times in two weeks. The third thing is, listen, New England's been in nine Super Bowls. I thought they gave up way too many easy baskets, missed assignments.
Starting point is 01:42:55 I thought their defense was poor. Offensively, they'll be fine. They're the warriors. Now, there are two things for Toronto that are real, and these are not going to go away. Number one, there's a word in the NBA that fans never talk about, but it's all scouts talk about. And that word is length. Toronto is long. Seacum and Gassau and Danny Green's long for a guard
Starting point is 01:43:21 and Nibaka and Kauai. They're long. And what does that mean? They make you take more difficult shots. They change the trajectory of your shot. That kind of length. They get tipped passes, tipped balls, the second rebound.
Starting point is 01:43:38 Toronto's really long. And I know it doesn't really matter, But the longest team I've ever seen in NBA history was Jordan's Bulls. They would have Pippin was long. And Harper and Rodman and Cootch. Outside of Steve Kerr, just arms everywhere, tipped, passes, everywhere, second shot. That's not going to go in a way. Golden State's not going to shoot 60% in any of these games.
Starting point is 01:44:02 They're going to make Golden State change the trajectory down low, perimeter. That's a real thing with Toronto. You saw that against Milwaukee, Orlando, and Philadelphia. They got guys out of their rhythm. Here's the second thing about Toronto, and this isn't going away. They're resilient as hell. They trailed Orlando 1-0. They trailed the Sixers 2-1.
Starting point is 01:44:20 They trailed Milwaukee to... This is the advantage of veteran teams. That's why I didn't buy into Denver. It's why I didn't buy any Milwaukee yet. They're just too young. You know, it's just like life. You know, my 18-year-old daughter, you know, she doesn't have that resilience built up. You know, a bad Instagram photo can wreck her afternoon.
Starting point is 01:44:38 You get older in life. Things that your house has to catch on fire, for you to go crazy. Like, right? Veteran NBA teams have a certain resilience. Gassal's been in a lot of games. Kauai's been in a lot of games. Ibaka.
Starting point is 01:44:53 Kyle Lowry. These guys have been in big playoff games, home road. So those two things, they have real length, and that's going to give Golden State some offensive issues, the whole series.
Starting point is 01:45:04 It's real. And they're resilient. They've got a bunch of old guys. They're a lot of 29, 30, 31 guys who have played in the playoffs. So Toronto's feisty. resilient, tough. I still like Golden State in this series,
Starting point is 01:45:16 but I do want to talk about this as I'm watching the game. I am not a tax gypsy. I can do this show. If it wasn't simulcast, I could do it in Wyoming, no state tax. I could do it in New Hampshire, no state tax. I live in California. I just moved from Connecticut. It's the two highest tax states in the country.
Starting point is 01:45:33 I'm not a tax gypsy. I just want to live where I want to live. I live by a beach. I don't want to have it 29 degrees in October. So, okay, I'm somebody that doesn't, worry too much about taxes. But I do think if I was a pro athlete,
Starting point is 01:45:48 I think about it a lot. Because as a pro athlete, I got like two contracts to make real money. That's it. I've already had 12 in my life. I could have another five, right? Pro athletes had the first contract you don't make much, team controls it.
Starting point is 01:46:04 Second and third you make a lot. And by the fourth, you could be old and hurt. So I just want you to think about this. Story out this morning, Kauai Lennar dealing with knee tendonitis. Oh, okay. I know we all think Kauai Leonard's going to stay or leave Toronto based on winning and losing. Let me just remind everybody.
Starting point is 01:46:26 He left $31 million on the table leaving San Antonio. Are we all sure this isn't going to come down to dollars? If he left Canada to go to the clippers, he'd give up $49 million. I've got to be honest with you. I'm a pro athlete. no way in you know what I'm giving up 80 million. And again, I'm not a tax gypsy. But Toronto's well run.
Starting point is 01:46:54 Toronto's got a good roster. It's Toronto. He can kind of hide, right? It's a hockey country. I'm sitting there last night and I'm like, never forget. The Raptors were totally cool with him sitting out 20 games. Not an issue. Not an issue.
Starting point is 01:47:13 They didn't like that in San Diego. I'm telling you, non-issue. Secondly, Toronto's already said, $20 million penhouse, free. Food. Kauai and dine, free. Don't kid yourself. That stuff matters. Nobody likes free stuff more than celebrities.
Starting point is 01:47:30 It's amazing. You could give a George Clooney a free coffee mug. They'll run across the street and traffic for it. Celebrities love free stuff. Here's a $20 million penhouse for free. You don't think that has a little... Oh, I have to think about that. Here's the other thing.
Starting point is 01:47:46 The East is a lot easier than the West. Kauai plays hard. Kauai's not going to last forever. Kauai's already missed an entire season almost with injuries. Are we sure he's going to give up 80 large? Now, I will tell you this. I don't think he should have ever left San Antonio. I really think he made a mistake.
Starting point is 01:48:06 They let him rest. Great owner. No state tax. He can be quiet. I mean, I actually think. San Antonio was perfect for Kauai Leonard, but that's over. And it didn't work out, and he left. And it says nothing against the clippers.
Starting point is 01:48:20 But Paul George, who had had injuries, stayed in Oklahoma City, even though he was from L.A. Kevin Durant, according to Rick Buecker, is fluctuating back and forth on leaving Golden State due to his most recent injury. Kauai Leonard's got tendonitis. He's dealing with 10.9. Are we sure he's not thinking, do I want to give up $80 million? I can't do this forever. He's already got a house in L.A.
Starting point is 01:48:54 He already bought it. It's already done. You know, I'm sitting there watching this thing last night, and, you know, we are all caught up because it's not our money. We're all cut up, but, oh, you got to go, is Kauai Leonard really an L.A. guy? It's not like he's, you know, he's got this, like, Shack. when he went to Orlando to L.A., you're like,
Starting point is 01:49:13 Shaq wanted to be a movie star. He wanted to be a hip-hop star. Orlando was too small for Shaq. Shack had so many aspirations. And now you see him, he's on every TV commercial. Blake Griffin, like he wanted to be in L.A. Blake Griffin had stand-up comedy, real estate. He had aspirations, TV shows, podcasts.
Starting point is 01:49:35 Kauai, I could argue, the perfect place for Kauai was San Antonio. the city in Texas that doesn't get a lot of fanfare. So I'm watching last night, and I'm just watching this game, and then I read that headline this morning, and I think, we're not considering that money thing. And when these athletes,
Starting point is 01:49:56 Paul George and Durant get hurt, one of the first things they think about is, I better take the guaranteed money. Kevin Durant right now would have to give up money to go to the Knicks. Paul George would have a lot of money to go to the Lakers. Kauai Lenders going to have to give up a lot of guaranteed money, guaranteed money to go to the clippers. I'm not sure. Injuries change everything.
Starting point is 01:50:18 All right, this came down 10 seconds ago. Andre Iguodal's MRI was clean. That's very good for the Warriors. Expectations? He plays in game two. They need him. He is a valuable part because that's one of the bodies. They throw at Kauai Lennard.
Starting point is 01:50:33 And they did a great job last night. So this series got really interesting. It's got really interesting. By the way, the latest Lakers drama, and it's, I mean, this stuff is a drip, drip, drip. The faucet's about ready to burst. So the latest Laker drama coming up. Starting point is 01:54:26 And we're still chasing it. And we don't know when we've done enough. Because people scoreboard watch. Life becomes about wins and losses. Steve Burns, Dustin Ross, because you find it important to be a good person while you hear on Earth, or are you a good person because you're afraid? Because that's two different intentions, bro.

Starting point is 01:55:07 major win while Brooks Kepka is looking to make history as he attempts to capture his third straight championship. The U.S. Open begins June 13th on Fox, FS1, and the Fox Sports app. If I wasn't gone that weekend, I consider going up. I'm leaving that weekend, I think. Man, that'd be a lot of fun. That's the final weekend of the NBA finals, too, potentially, isn't it? Wow. Wow, what a weekend. Tiger Woods, Brooks Kepka, U.S. Open, NBA Finals. If it goes game six would be like that Thursday or Friday, right? Game 7, I believe, would be Sunday. Oh, Lord.
Starting point is 01:55:49 Maybe I won't leave. Maybe I'll just sit around and watch TV all weekend. We could do the show from Pebble Beach. It's not too late. Under consideration. Those tents at those U.S. opens, oh, they're full of goodies. They're just pouring stuff and throwing grilled burgers in your face all day. It's fantastic.
Starting point is 01:56:06 All right, time for another NBA edition of... And now it's time for another episode of as the Lakers turn. Oh, boy, here's the ninth story in 12 days. Josh Hart, good young player off the bench from Villanova, was talking, he was on a podcast, and he started talking about all those crazy trade rumors in January between the Pelicans and between the Lakers. There must have been, I mean, at the time it was almost hysterical.
Starting point is 01:56:41 There were nine Lakers on the trade block USA Today, the athletic, the L.A. Times, every newspaper had them. And so Josh Hart was on a podcast, and he talked about how chaotic it was. I think it just was so bad just because it was so public. I think that was the biggest thing. And it was like... Everything that was going to leak down. Everything that was going to leak that weather.
Starting point is 01:57:03 And obviously, I don't know. It could have been true. could have not been true. You know, I mean. Nobody's really talking to you. Yeah, you don't know the policies. I was like, you know, you had no idea. Like, really nobody, like you seemed like nobody was untouchable, honestly, besides
Starting point is 01:57:15 Braun and KCP. Like that was literally like the only untouchable pieces. It was just a weird situation just because you had no idea. Well, the problem, LeBron and KCP, so Josh Hart's telling you, we all thought we were all getting traded except those two because those two are represented by one guy, Rich Paul. This is the schism in the locker room, and I think it's real. I don't want to hear that players make a lot of money.
Starting point is 01:57:42 I make a great living. If my name was coming out that I had to move my family constantly, it would affect me. And I'm in my 50s. I'm a grown-up. For a 22, 23-year-old kid who comes to the Lakers, and most of these guys, it's a dream team. And then your name gets thrown into the papers, freaks you out. You think Lonzo Ball wants to end up in New Orleans? It freaks you out.
Starting point is 01:58:03 it affects your life. Your friends are texting you. Your buddies are calling you. Your girlfriend, your wife's on you. Your kids don't know. It's mayhem. And so to me, this means two things. It's real. And that's how all the young guys felt, because Josh is one of the young guys. So the two things I think of is, number one, the Lakers have to make a trade. I would love Bradley Beale, but Washington doesn't have a general manager now. So they're not going to make a move. And I think they need to make a move here as soon as the season is over. Okay. And I think I think the guy is Anthony Davis. Now, the bad news is
Starting point is 01:58:36 the Pelicans do not want to trade them to the Lakers, so you're going to have to not only offer up a lot, you're going to have to win it. You're going to have to show Gail Benson, the owner of the Pelicans. Listen, David Griffin's going to have to go to the owner of the Pelicans. Okay, the Lakers are giving us two extra draft mix and another extra player. You're going to have to slam dunk this thing.
Starting point is 01:58:52 So Gail Benson has to take the offer because the Lakers are just giving you a ton. But I do think that you need a second star to get over this negative press every 15 minutes. The narrative now is horrible. And I would do it the first day that free agency opens. The first, the first day I can make a trade, make it change the narrative. Secondly is, Josh Hart's comments tell you there's a gap here. The young players feel like
Starting point is 01:59:19 there's LeBron and his dude, and Anthony Davis could only make it worse because Anthony and LeBron are both repped by Rich Paul. So my takeaway is go get Anthony. I think that's probably going to be the guy you can get, unless Washington hires a GM fast. And losing some of these young players, you kind of burn the bridge. You kind of burned it. Like a lot of them just feel like we're not part of the group. And I think chemistry, Toronto is showing you this. Denver showed,
Starting point is 01:59:42 Portland showed you. Chemistry's a real deal in this league. Unity, cohesion. Everybody's on the same plane. It's a real deal. It matters. So that's the latest Laker drama. This has been as the Lakers turn.
Starting point is 02:00:03 It's a big show. I never watched it. I've never seen soap opera. You've never seen a soap opera? No, my 20s were mostly a soap opera, so I didn't need television. Joy Taylor with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on a news. This is the
Starting point is 02:00:18 Heard Line News. All right, the following statement is facts. We like facts around here. Yeah. Not according to Baker-Made He'll We make things up. I'm Mr. Fax. There are facts around here thrown around sometimes, and the fact is, Toronto Raptors have never lost an NBA finals game.
Starting point is 02:00:34 Wow. That is awesome. How many have they played? It's good stat. Drake showed up last night wearing a Del Curry Raptors jersey in their one NBA finals game win. There's a Del Curry. It was a Del Curry Raptors jersey.
Starting point is 02:00:48 And then he put in exclamation mark on the Raptors win by barking some trash talk at Dramon Green as the Warriors left the floor. Interaction with Seth Curry took some lint off of his hair there. And after the game, Dremon was not in the mood to talk about it.
Starting point is 02:01:04 Just wanted you to talk a little. bit about that post-game scuffle between you and Drake? You got a question about basketball? It wasn't really a scuffle because I didn't hit him and he didn't hit me or I didn't push him or he didn't push me. We talked. We barked a little bit, but I wouldn't necessarily consider that a scuffle, not really what I personally would consider a scuffle.
Starting point is 02:01:29 Draymond's had a few scuffles and it's like, that does not rise to scuffle. He's been in a scuffle. That was not a scuffle. Drake is trolling everyone. This is what's happening. He's figured it out. And he got in the bucks head and now he's getting in the warrior's head. They really shouldn't be paying any attention to him.
Starting point is 02:01:46 Draymond's answer should have been like it was nothing and that's it. It's a fine question to ask. He did have an interaction with him as he was leaving the court. I'm very upset though. I don't like him touching coaches and players. I'm not buying any more of Drake's best music. I'm not buying any more of his LPs. I'm done.
Starting point is 02:02:05 Look, Drake's going to be fine. Steph and Dremont are going to be fine. And they're all going to be friends when this is all over. I can assure you up it. Dramon is not a grudge holder. Look at Steph. Look at, it's so funny because when Dremon is getting... He literally, Steph goes in between them.
Starting point is 02:02:21 Watch it right here. So, Steph... Look, because they're not serious. It's not serious. Dramon went on the shop with the brawn. Remember how it was like, oh, Draymond and the brahant and they hate each other. And Dremon got suspended. It was all fine.
Starting point is 02:02:34 It's all going to be fine. Drake is trolling everyone. This is part of the fandom. These are our people, all right? Fans are fanatics. Drake is a fan. Sometimes he's a fan of other teams. Obviously, he has Stefan Gates.
Starting point is 02:02:46 How about this? Tattooed on his arm, but the Raptors are his team. How about what? They're actually, he's one of the few guys on the team that talks. Nobody else trash talks in Toronto. I mean, that's why it works. Look, I know it bothers everyone because it's Drake and they expect him to just sit there and not getting involved. But this is what he does.
Starting point is 02:03:05 That said, I'm not into, I don't touch me. You can say whatever you want, but I'm not into the touching thing. But they seem to be fine with it, so it's fine. Sticking with last night's game, a Golden State sweep has been avoided by the Raptors. Pascal Seaccombe looked especially good in game one. He scored 32 points on 14 of 17 shooting with eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. A couple of moves we're showing here in FS1. Sorry for the radio audience.
Starting point is 02:03:30 These are not fluky. I mean, he had a couple of, watch this move. Not this one. He has a move against Raymond down low right here. Is this it? That is really an all-end. Right here. Right here.
Starting point is 02:03:41 Look it. That is a great move. You're not stopping that in this league. No way. He's incredibly athletic. He's incredibly long and fast. And he was just running the whole game. And their transition defense was not good last night.
Starting point is 02:03:53 He had an incredible all-time game. And he is now in really good company. Here's every other player to score 30 plus points in a finals game one within their first three seasons. Kareem, Dr. J. Kim Ilajuan and Tim Duncan. So he's well on his way to a star-studded career, especially in the postseason, when it matters. And kudos to him because he put in the work to make that happen.
Starting point is 02:04:15 And finally, neither Odell or Levion Bell have attended the Browns or the Jets OTAs. And now there's been some fallout. Freddie Kitchens called out Odell. And now Jets' defensive tackle, Steve McClendon is kind of calling out Levion, trying to get him at the Jets' workouts. Let's take a listen to both of them yesterday. I just want to see him. The last time we were... A lot.
Starting point is 02:04:39 The offense. I talked to him and I told him, I said, you understand. This place is different than Pittsburgh. I said, man, you need to get back so you can understand the quarterback and the situation. Well, it is different than Pittsburgh. That's correct. That's not quite Pittsburgh.
Starting point is 02:04:54 Don't like the Levian Bell thing at all. Well, Levian didn't play last year. So normally I would say it's not a big deal because he's a running back and it doesn't matter that much. Does he like football? Does he like it? I understand that visually it's not the best situation for them to not be there. Optically, you want Odell Beckham Jr. to be there working with Baker.
Starting point is 02:05:17 You want Levion with Sam Darnold. You want them to be on the same page. That said, clearly they don't want to be there. They're training on their own. This was my concern about Levian Bell when they got him. I said before, he's a great talent. But I never felt, you know, Trent Dofer said this years ago, Some guys love the game.
Starting point is 02:05:34 Some guys love what the game does for them. I'd rather have guys that love the game. It's your only issue that they are new to the team? Because that is my only issue with this whatsoever. When you're a veteran and you've been to five OTAs, I don't care if you're at OTAs. Julio Jones missed a camp last year. I'm like, Julio and Matt Ryan and Simpatico, they're fine. I don't care about that.
Starting point is 02:05:56 But new quarterback, new receivers. And they're both young quarterbacks. Yeah, Baker and Sam are kids. Like, let's give them. They need the support. the reps. By the way, show up to the first four practices and say, I'm out the last two. Just give yourself to the team for like a week. I don't know if there's nine practices. Just say, listen, I'm going to show up over the weekend. I'm going to give you three or four
Starting point is 02:06:17 practices. I'm out Monday through Wednesday. I got a signing thing to do. I'm good with that, but give a little love to the team. My only issue is that they're new to the team and it's young quarterbacks. Otherwise, I don't even think of this is a story. But it's, loving on being off for a year and O'Dell and Baker need to be on the same page. I think It's important. Joy with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by.
Starting point is 02:06:39 The Heard Lie News. By the way, one of the things about the media, and it's one of the reasons I really stay mostly off Twitter. You know, I put some stuff from the show on, but there's just so much, there's people that aren't being honesty brokers on it. And I don't want to get into arguments. I don't, listen, anybody that tells you a 10-1 rating for the opening game of the NBA isn't great. It doesn't understand the business.
Starting point is 02:07:03 In American television ratings, the game last night got a 10-1, this network Fox doesn't have the NBA. There's no reason for me to go out here and say great rating, right? Like I should be saying college football is great. U.S. Open's great. The boxing is great. NFL is great. That's what our company has. NASCAR, World Series.
Starting point is 02:07:21 Listen, to get a 10-1 rating, game one of the finals, when you have a Canadian team, which does not count for our American ratings, meaning you can't count Toronto. It's like the fourth biggest city, third, fourth biggest city in North America. If this was Golden State against the Celtics, Golden State against the Bucks, Golden State against Milwaukee, you'd be in the 11s. The bigger story is nobody's watching the Stanley Cup final. Nobody. It's getting a 2.8. And that's the bigger problem. The problem is in Canada, the Raptors now are gaining steam
Starting point is 02:07:53 and are as or more popular than any of the hockey teams. That's a problem for the NHL. And, you know, the media has never figured this out. And I don't understand. This is not complicated. I go to hockey games all the time. My wife's from Detroit. So she was a Red Wing fan.
Starting point is 02:08:08 Then she moved to Chicago as a Black Hawk fan. My wife likes hockey. So when hockey's on, my wife's into hockey. Maybe it's the hunky hockey players. Whatever. She likes hockey. Okay? So we, people in our family, and I go to hockey games.
Starting point is 02:08:20 My kids go to the L.A. Kings. They know a couple of hockey families in our town. I like go to the L.A. King games. I think they're a blast. But hockey's got two things working against it. 99% of us didn't play as kids. It's expensive, and a lot of the country doesn't have hockey rings, right? So we have no visceral connection when we're 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 years old.
Starting point is 02:08:39 We all play Little League. We all shot a basketball. You know what I mean? So that's a huge part. That'll never change. Most kids, most states don't have mountains. Most states don't do cold. You know, the reality is in Phoenix, hard to find a lot of hockey rings.
Starting point is 02:08:53 So that's number one. They can't overcome that. The second thing is, and this is not a knock at hockey, it's super fast. and on television, hard to see the puck, hard to differentiate the players. They got helmets on. They're going a million miles an hour. The stars are on the ice. They're off the ice.
Starting point is 02:09:07 They're on the ice. And players are all about the same size. If you watch an NBA game, Pascal Seaccombe does not look like Steph Curry. And Steph does not play like Draymond. And Draymond doesn't play or look like Mark Gassal. The guys, some are seven feet. Some are six two. Some are slender.
Starting point is 02:09:24 Some are tough Draymond green. And there's no helmets. I can see them. basketball, Kareem at a hook shot. Some guys are threes. James Harden game doesn't look like anybody else. There's so many different styles and different games that it's constantly visual stimulating. In hockey, unless you're a hockey expert, it's a million guys on the ice, they're off the ice, they're off the ice.
Starting point is 02:09:47 And there's a lot of guys that look the exact same. I can't differentiate unless you're a hockey diehard. Hockey players. It's just dude skating a million miles an hour. I can't differentiate. It's just like, because I'm not a hockey expert, and most people aren't hockey experts, because we don't grow up with it. So hockey is something that doesn't play great on TV. It's so fast.
Starting point is 02:10:07 I mean, it is just, you go to a hockey game, it is so fast. Stars on, stars off, line change, line change. Guys wearing helmets, who are they? And a lot of guys kind of, they're all six feet, two, ten, I can't tell. So some of this is just ingrained. It is what it is. I like hockey, but it doesn't work on television. The bigger story is not the NBA rating.
Starting point is 02:10:31 NBA rating at 10-1, you can't count Toronto's great. A bigger issue is hockey's not great on television. You know, people always say they can't see the puck. I can see it, and I'm old. So if I can see it, I don't know how people can't see the puck. You know, if a guy is skating around with his stick, do I have to see the puck to figure, I can't see the golf ball all the time and a course? I can still watch Tiger Woods.
Starting point is 02:10:53 I don't need to see every second of the puck. Well, the biggest thing is that most people don't play when they were kids. Like, it's hard to get attached emotionally. Are you a hockey diehard? No. Okay. And I'm from Pittsburgh. We have amazing hockey team.
Starting point is 02:11:03 So do you agree with me that when you watch hockey, the game is so fast, players have helmets. They're on the ice. They're off the ice. It is hard to differentiate players. Well, yeah. I mean, that's just the nature of the game. But I think if you are a hockey diehard, you're not relating to this conversation. Right.
Starting point is 02:11:19 You're like, coward. You're crazy. I can tell this guy from that. Don't get me wrong. I can tell Eric Lindross from other players. Right. Like Patrick Kane of the Blackhawks was smaller fast. Oh, that's Patrick Kane.
Starting point is 02:11:28 But if you didn't play it as a kid. But what we're talking about is with the finals, and the same way that we are with the NBA, you're going to get a lot of fringe fans. That's when you get your biggest rating, right? Because it's a must-watch situation. It's for the championship. And when you're not getting that,
Starting point is 02:11:42 it's because of the reasons that we're talking about. But when I watched the NBA last night, Mark Gassal's game doesn't look anything like Steph Curry's game. You have Pascal Ciacom's this long, down low. And then you got friends. Van Vleet's a little guy, chucking up three. But it's just a more intimate game. And yes, and it just, every player's got a unique style, a look, a size, a game, their role, what they do.
Starting point is 02:12:05 There's no pads. There's no helmet. I see everybody up close, like right next to me. If you have a skin rash, Mark Gassol, I could see it. Like, it's personal. That forward's got a skin rash. It's a very intimate game, yes, in person and on television. By the way, Warriors reporter for the athletic Anthony Slater,
Starting point is 02:12:24 Kevin Durant just walked through the tunnel to get some court work in Toronto. Earlier I asked Chris Broussard if Durant coming back to save the Warriors would be the best case scenario for KD. The best case scenarios, they're down 0-2-21. Katie comes back, saves the day, wins the finals for him, probably would be finals MVP if that happens. You erase that entire narrative that they didn't need you. And now people saying, well, if that's that,
Starting point is 02:12:54 were going to lose to Kauai in the finals.
Starting point is 02:13:20 You don't have to deal with that anymore. Why not go for four straight? Nobody's done it since Bill Russell, not Kobe, Shaq, Michael, Duncan, nobody. This would be your way. I've said for Katie to kind of getting in that top 10, getting to that top five maybe, he has to do it with his own team or just get out of the scenario where people think your team doesn't need you. If you can separate yourself from them by winning four straight, that's a way to get in there without leaving. And then if you want, you can always leave the next year.
Starting point is 02:13:54 right like you'll be 31 years old 32 years old you'll still have plenty left and you get to look at the free agent landscape where does kai rego how do the clippers look this year is lebron really faint i could go there and save lebrown all interesting stuff katie came out of the tunnel getting some practice time very excited a lot drama here yeah oh oh katie go play katy not the other thing you pointed out about the NBA over hockey is it is an incredibly intimate sport i mean drake is literally going on and giving a back rub to the coach. Like fans. I mean, when you watch an NBA game, I'm watching NBA game, I can see rich, famous people behind the basket. I mean, when the Portland Trailblazers were on television, I have a friend of mine that lives in Portland. He and his son, they're on television every 40 seconds.
Starting point is 02:14:40 I'm like, hey, none of those people. I mean, basketball is very intimate, very unique. Everybody has a different game, and, you know, there's not a lot of sameness. And also, I just think basketball does an amazing job. And I say basketball because it starts from grassroots to internationally and college and the NBA of really telling us players' stories and branding and elevating superstars even from a young age. Think about the shoe deals. Right. This is where the NBA, the NBA is not a league.
Starting point is 02:15:11 The NBA is a culture. Yes. The NBA is a culture. I mean, I went to an NBA All-Star game a few years ago. It's like Mardi Gras. It's not even like any other All-Star game. Whereas baseball is reluctant to celebrate. the NBA promotes celebration.
Starting point is 02:15:26 By the way, the NFL is now ripping off the NBA saying, you know, we should do more celebration. People like celebration. Kids like celebration. It ends up in viral digital stuff. Right. I mean, the world has changed. Everything you just said.
Starting point is 02:15:36 Like, it's on the Internet now. It's on your phone. So marketing is a huge part of elevating the game from kids all the way up. And the NBA is just mastered that. My wife, she'll go to NBA games. And she's like, ooh, cocktails. I can put on a nice dress. It's an event.
Starting point is 02:15:52 Like an NBA game. is an event. It's got a boxing field. Like it's people dress up. It's cool. It's hip. It's a culture. All right, there was such a hub above the Spelling Bee last night. They had a national spelling bee. They gave eight first place trophies. Yeah, I mean, they had to.
Starting point is 02:16:06 Eight kids didn't misspell a word. So I'm going to do my spelling bee. Coming up next. Be sure to catch live editions of the herd. Weekdays in noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific. Chris Brousard, Doug Gottlieb, Jason McIntyre stopped by today. There was eight winners at the spelling bee last night. I just drove everybody crazy.
Starting point is 02:16:23 It was so exciting. They tied because the kids were all brilliant. And it was so exciting. And I love spelling. And I'm hit and miss. I still can't spell cinnamon. Two M's, two N's. I'm not sure I lose it.
Starting point is 02:16:35 But I'm going to be the contestant in the spelling bee. Enjoy, you're going to be the host. So let's take it away. A spelling bee in the herd. All right. The first ever heard spelling bee. Let's start with Siakum. As in Pascal.
Starting point is 02:16:48 As in Pascal Seaccom. You said a sentence. S-I-A-K- A.m. Correct. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He plays 14 to 17 last night. He was excellent last night.
Starting point is 02:17:01 Spell, Kauai. Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z, Z. Correct. Yeah, yeah, he puts people. He is one of the most, he does make Mike Trout look like Carrotop. He's not much of an entertainer. He's not great at a microphone. Now, he is great.
Starting point is 02:17:21 I think he's more interesting than Mike Trout. I will say this. his hands are fascinating and his logo that Nike created. It's a great personal logo. New Balance has a new billboard that just popped up in Oakland. Did you see that in Oakland? The King of the North is coming. I saw that.
Starting point is 02:17:36 I love, now that's the kind of trolling I can get behind. Do you know where that comes from? No. Oh, let me guess, the Dragon Show. Yes, the Dragon Show, Game of Thrones. Is that what comes from? Yeah, it is, yeah. The King of the North?
Starting point is 02:17:48 The King of the North, yes. Was he a she wolf or something? He was, he has a wolf on his, a documentary. Wolf on his family crust. It's John Snow. You know who John Snow is. I thought he died. He came back to life. Spoiler alert. Actually, I don't care. The show is over. So what year
Starting point is 02:18:04 did he die and what year did he come back? It's not a real show. It's not... Okay, moving on. Spell Drake. Yeah. T-R-O-L-L. Troll. Come on. He is trolling everyone. Yes. So your contention has been he is just this is just a big troll. Everybody's done on it.
Starting point is 02:18:21 It is. No one. No, I mean, it's, they may be getting emotional and, you know, they lost. So, of course. But they're all going to be fine. They're going to be friends when it's over. All right. All right. Spell LeBron. A-L-O-N-E alone. How about that? Yeah. LeBron James in the last month has been conspicuous by his absence. He has not talked on any platform. And there is a reason, Joy. And I think it's really smart by him. He is disengaging from this grease fire. Have you noticed this, folks?
Starting point is 02:18:59 Oh, yeah. He hasn't had a quote outside of like Twitter in a month. LeBron James, face of the NBA. He's doing this. He's separated. I don't want my brand to be part of this mess. So right now he's alone.
Starting point is 02:19:15 All right. Spell Mayfield. D-I-V-E-R-S-I-O-N. Diversion. Diversion. Baker Mayfield, his last four or five tweets were directed at me, and he doesn't care about me. He's doing that to be a diversion like a magician does so that we don't talk about O'Dell Beckham, Jr. Because the O'Dell Beckham thing has been boiling inside the facility for a week, and how do I know that?
Starting point is 02:19:44 Because Freddie Kitchens was pissed and went public. And Freddie, I always say this. You see a couple fight at a party? What are their fights like at home? If a coach comes out and can't control himself with the media, what do you think he's staying in the room and in meetings? Baker's being a diversion, pay attention to me. It's actually smart.
Starting point is 02:20:04 So we don't pay attention to the mini dumpster fire that's become Odell. You think he couldn't control himself or you think that was on purpose? I think Baker's doing it absolutely. No, no, no, Freddie Kitchens. I think he was ticked off and after about the 15th time you asked me that question, my real emotions come out. All right, speaking of diversion, Spell O'Dell.
Starting point is 02:20:24 As in Beckham, you mean? Yes. NBA, D-U-D-E. NBA dude. I do believe that he is the first NBA player in the NFL. He's global. NBA players, NBA stars are global. NFL players are not global. Very few exceptions.
Starting point is 02:20:39 Brett Farf could walk through, you know, Munich. Nobody'd know. Odell's a star, and he is global, and it is different. And I do think he feels that much of his career in New York was wasted and that he wants to make it work, his brand, his brand, his money, his game, his notoriety, not just football. He's the first NBA dude in the NFL. And I do think, even if he stays in Cleveland, he'll never feel like Bernie
Starting point is 02:21:01 Cossar and Joe Thomas. He is a global star. Spell Raiders. CIRCUS. Circus. In the last year, four different plans. Character guys, just kidding. Don't want stars, just kidding. You cannot tell me this has been well thought out.
Starting point is 02:21:27 They have pivoted two to three times, maybe four in the last year. They don't know what they're doing. I just hope they're on hard knocks. I was kind of hoping they would do hard knocks when they get to Vegas so we can see how that works, but they seem to be the best candidate this year for that. By far. Finally, spell cowherd. G-E-N-I-U-S.
Starting point is 02:21:50 Genius. What? That's not correct, judges? Verification, please? Howard is spelled H-A-T-E-R. Hater. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 02:22:00 Baker would agree with that. So would I know. So miserable. Best for last. Have a great weekend, everybody. Good sports coming up. One more herd? The herd streams 24 hours a day,
