The Highwire with Del Bigtree - PFAS IN OUR BLOODSTREAM

Episode Date: July 29, 2025

Starting point is 00:00:00 I want to talk about something, an actual real positive study that just came out. There's a lot of them out there. We're going to start including these in the show as well. This study centers around something called PFS. This is forever chemicals. These are chemicals that do not break down in our environment. And these chemicals, unfortunately, if you happen to live next to a military base, we've found, this is just recently, a study has found 99% of participants near military bases using well-water,
Starting point is 00:00:30 have PFAS in their blood and also cosmetics. Women's cosmetics, the EPA looked at a lot of women's cosmetics and they found that about 570 of those cosmetics have PFAS in them. This was a headline, how do you know if your personal care products contain these? A lot of companies use them. They're trying to be phased out. There's state level action trying to phase these out of these personal care products. But once these get in your body, they can and do cause havoc.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Cancer's neurodegenerative issues. Well, a new study has just shown some positive things about your gut bacteria. So now it's not just about following your gut, it's about actually building your gut. Here is the study, human gut bacteria bioaccumulate per and polyfluoralkylase substances, that's PFS. And it says in the study here,
Starting point is 00:01:16 we report the bioaccumulation of PFAS by 38 gut bacterial strains, ranging in concentration from nanomolar to micrometer. That's 500 micrometers. What's that mean? Well, bioaccumulation. So what's happening in there is they took human gut bacteria, some of the beneficial gut bacteria that's in your gut,
Starting point is 00:01:34 and they put it in the mouse model. They put it in these mice. And then they gave these mice, P-FAS, they exposed them to this forever chemical. And what this gut bacteria did was it bioaccumulated. It sucked it out of their bodies like a sponge. It said, give me that. Stop causing damage in this mouse.
Starting point is 00:01:50 We'll hold on to this. Not only did it hold onto this, this gut bacteria sequestered it in the bacteria into kind of like a spherical form to protect even the bacteria. The bacteria that pulled it in was still able to function with it in there, and then it excreted it. It got it out of the body, of the mouse body. But it goes on from there.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Let's go to an article here at Sepok Times. It was reporting on this study, and they say this about the study. When these bacteria were introduced into mice, they quickly absorbed the chemicals. When they were excreted through the gut, the forever chemicals were removed with them in waste. So they got it out of there. Within minutes of exposure, the bacteria absorbed between 25 and 74% of P-FAS chemicals at various concentration levels.
Starting point is 00:02:33 But here's the cool part. As the mice were exposed to increasing P-FAS levels, the bacteria kept removing at a steady percentage of toxins, suggesting they could act as a natural filter in the gut. So it was almost like someone lifting weights, and they just kept giving them more weights, more weights, more P-FAS, and it just kept lifting at the same rate saying, I got it, no problem. That's your gut bacteria. So a lot have been talked about. We've had experts on the gut, on the gut, how to fortify your gut.
Starting point is 00:03:03 But just out there right now, takeaway message, what can you do not to kill your gut bacteria? Well, highly processed foods kills your gut bacteria. Alcohol, overconsumption of alcohol kills your gut bacteria. Antibiotic use, increasing antibiotic use, kills your gut bacteria. So those three things, if you want to actually just start there, maybe step away. from that a little bit and rebuild your gut. There's a lot of ways to rebuild your gut, not for this segment, but we can talk about that at another time. But this is some of the new science they're finding about the wisdom and the knowledge your natural body has to heal
Starting point is 00:03:39 itself. So I want that to be a takeaway message here.
