The History of China - #338 - Taiping 15: The Summer of 10,000 Years

Episode Date: July 19, 2026

The Taiping Army is riding high. Having finally broken two massive, three-year-long sieges over the course of a single summer, ultimate victory seems within their grasp. Yet, that taste of triumph act...s like blood in the water. The lifting of the sieges removes the one thing that had been holding this fractured movement together: sheer external pressure. For three years, the East King has been rehearsing one demand: the same title as the Heavenly King. Absolute recognition, absolute parity - the promotion he believes he's duly owed. Now with the pressure off, he's willing to do anything to get it, even summon the voice of God Himself.Time Period Covered:Dec. 1853–Sep. 1856 CE Major Historical Figures:Taiping Heavenly Kingdom:Hong Xiuquan, the Heavenly King [1814–1864]Yang Xiuqing, the East King [c. 1821–1856]Wei Changhui, the North King [d. 1856]Qin Rigang, the Yan King [1821–1856]Shi Dakai, the Wing King [1831–1863]Xiao Chaogui, the West King [d. 1852]Feng Yunshan, the South King [d. 1852]Hu Yihuang, the deposed Yu King Qing Dynasty:Zeng Guofan, founder of the Xiang Army [1811–1872]Xiang Rong, Qing commander of the southern siege camp at Nanjing [d. 1856]Tuoming'a, Manchu commander at Yangzhou Major Sources Cited:Michael, Franz, and Chang Chung-li. Starting point is 00:00:47 Episode 338, the summer of 10,000 years. The empire, long-divided must unite. Long-united must divide. The opening lines of the romance of the three kingdoms. Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 1618 It took two blows to finish the job, the same way it had taken two to nearly finish the winter before.
Starting point is 00:01:27 Except this time, the two blows landed on the other man, and the man on the receiving end of them did not survive the experience. Chinra Gong got there first. Recalled from his own fighting in the east, he turned his army back toward Nanjing and struck the northern of the two great siege camps that had throttled the heavenly capital's approaches on and off for three years running, breaking the Manchu commander, Tuominga's forces at Yangzhou and clearing the north bank of the river. Then, joined by Shedaki, who had left Jiangxi behind at his heavenly king's urgent summons,
Starting point is 00:02:05 leaving Zenguo Fon behind in it, still weeping into his memorials with no idea that any of this was coming. Chin turned south. In June of 1856, the combined armies fell on the southern camp. The older and more dangerous of the two dug in for years under a government commander named Xiang Rong. What did three years actually mean for a siege camp like that? This was no mere blockade thrown out of it. up overnight and broken the following season. Rather, Xiang Rong's men had been sitting outside these walls since the earliest weeks after Nanjing fell in 1853. Long enough that an
Starting point is 00:02:46 entire generation of Taiping administration had been built, staffed, and run in a capital that had never once in its entire existence been free of an enemy within sight of its own ramparts. Every policy this court had made, every title it had handed out, every quarrel its leadership had found the energy to pick with each other, had been made under that particular pressure. The knowledge that the Qing demons were still out there, still watching, still capable in theory of ending this whole experiment by nightfall if the gates ever failed to hold. A court that has never, a court that has never known anything else, could not possibly yet know what it would do with itself were that pressure to ever lift.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Xiang Rong had been dogging this movement since Yong'an, since Gui Lin, since the earliest and hungriest days of the great retreat through Guangxi. Five years of it now, on and off, the one government general who kept finding his way back into the story, no matter how many times the Taiping thought they'd shaken him off. He would not survive this either. His camp broken, his position untenable, he fell back on Dan Yang and was dead within seven weeks. by his own hand in most tellings, though other accounts have him succumbing to his battle wounds and the opium he took against the pain of them. However his end actually arrived, nobody then or since has doubted what caused it,
Starting point is 00:04:20 and with him went the last serious government pressure on Nanjing's gates. The scale of it was almost too large to hold in one frame. Wu Chang, still in typing hands from its recapture in the spring of eight, The third time that punished city had changed hands in the course of this war, and not the last. The Yangza opened from Wu Chang in the west, cleared to Jinjiang in the east, some 400 miles of river, walled city after walled city under the same banner, the water, a highway instead of a gauntlet for the first time since this war began. Shedakai's own forces, even while their commander was being recalled east, had by this point subdued most of the rich prefectures of Jiangxi,
Starting point is 00:05:07 the same province where Zeng Guo Fan sat stranded, penniless, and surrounded. Which meant the Wing King effectively controlled the ground beneath the very man he'd broken at Poyang Lake, without either of them even needing to meet again to prove it. Zeng Guo Fan, at this exact moment, sat stranded at Nan Chang, with his fleet bottled uselessly in a lake and not a coin to pay his own story. soldiers. The two halves of this war moving in such perfectly opposite directions that a man plotting them on the same chart would have assumed that he'd made an error. This was, by any reasonable measure, the high watermark of the whole rebellion. Everything the Taiping had bled for since Tientien,
Starting point is 00:05:55 its capital, the river, the provinces, the momentum, had arrived all at once in the summer of 1856. It would also, before the year was out, cost the movement most of the men who had built it. Not to the Qing, not to Zenguo Fan or to any government army. No, to each other. To understand why, we have to understand what the siege had actually been holding together. Because it wasn't just city walls. Yang Xiu Qing did not look like a man who spoke with the war. the voice of God.
Starting point is 00:06:35 He'd come up from charcoal burning in Guangxi, poor and largely unlettered, drawn to the god-worshippers the way desperate men are drawn to anything that promises the world is about to be rearranged in their favor. What he had, rather than birth or learning, was a trick. If trick is even the right word for something he may have believed as completely as anyone who was watching him. And it was this. At intervals, in front of the whole assembled court,
Starting point is 00:07:03 Yong would fall into a trance, and the heavenly Father God would descend and speak through his mouth. It's been a strange thing to discuss and look at since the first time we brought it up, because that strangeness is pretty much the whole story. Hong Xiu-Chuan's authority ran in one direction only, down from a vision he alone had experienced, years before all this had even begun, of ascending to heaven and receiving his commission directly from God. Nobody else had been there, and thus nobody could disprove it. Nobody could verify it, contest it, or add to it. It was a closed loop, complete, and unrepeatable. Yang's authority, on the other hand, ran the opposite way. It arrived on demand
Starting point is 00:07:55 in front of witnesses whenever the trance took him, which meant that whatever the voice of God said in that room, in that moment, outranked anything Hong Xochuan had ever said about anything, including things concerning the heavenly king himself. This imbalance had not always run this deep, and the fact that it had gotten there at all was itself a measure of how far Yang had already pushed by 1856. In the earliest days of the movement, Hong Xiu-Cen had claimed a kind of holiness all his own, distinct from and alongside whatever Yang and the others could offer. He didn't keep it, though.
Starting point is 00:08:41 At some point in the years before Nanjing, almost certainly under exactly the kind of pressure the court would go on experiencing for the rest of its existence, Hong had been made to concede the point, to draw a hard line between God the Father and Jesus Christ, who alone were properly holy, and himself, who was merely the movement's sovereign head, and one brother among others.
Starting point is 00:09:06 It was a small theological adjustments with enormous practical consequences. It left Yang as the sole active channel to heaven still standing in daily use, since Hong's own connection to the divine had already happened in the past tense that one time and could not be repeated or renewed on demand the way that Yang's could. Every humiliation that followed was simply that original concession working out towards its own logical end. It also came with a stagecraft of its own, and that stagecraft mattered at least as much as the theology itself. When God was about to speak, drums sounded, and Yang's women attendance went running for the North King. Because whatever else was happening in Nanjing that day, Wei Changwei was expected to drop
Starting point is 00:09:59 everything and appear. If he was late, the message came to him instead through the women, secondhand, which was its own small daily insult for a man who had given away his entire family's property to this movement in its earliest, hungriest days. When Young spoke in God's voice, Wei knelt in full prostration on the ground before him, the same as everyone else in the room. When Yang traveled by sedan chair when the trance was upon him, Wei was made to walk alongside on foot because the heavenly father did not require a North King's escort to ride. Young's own household stewards, meanwhile, would not so much as disturb their master to
Starting point is 00:10:45 confirm whether the trance had ended, which meant Wei could be left standing for however long it suited Young's household to leave him there. Chen Rha Gong fared no better. More than once, he was the one who ended up with his own shoulder under the East King's sedan chair, helping carry it up the palace steps. None of this was accidental, and none of it was really about drums or sedan chairs. It was young, teaching the two most dangerous men in Nanjing in small physical increments exactly where they stood.
Starting point is 00:11:25 And those places were definitely below Yang. Both of these men deserve a moment of their own, because neither of them had spent this movement as mere bystander. Wei Chang Hui was the closest thing the god worshippers had to a man of means and education among the original Guangxi following. When the movement was still poor and unproven, back in the Thistle Mountain days, he had given over his own family's property to it,
Starting point is 00:11:54 no small commitment from one of the few men in the movement who had something to lose in the first place. Chin Zhur Gong had come up as a minor, taught himself the military arts on the side, and developed into exactly the kind of formidable field strategist a movement like this could scarcely afford to be without. He'd even, briefly, been a king. In the spring of 1854, Chin was raised to the king of Yen,
Starting point is 00:12:25 yen being the ancient name for the very region around Beijing. Such a title did not survive contact with the war that he actually had to fight, which ran west, not north. A reverse in the field checked him, and the crown came right back off, revoked at Yang Xoching's own direction. And off two came the Yu-kingship of one Huigwang, stripped in the same season for the same kind of failure. Keep that second name in your pocket.
Starting point is 00:12:55 It will return to us near the end of this episode, round about midnight. What Chin was left holding by the mid-1850s was rank without a crown, senior officer of the entire Taiping army, outranking every commander who was not one of the kings, yet reminded daily that he was no longer one of the kings. Both men had been with Hong Xiu-Ten since the earliest days. Both had handled his most important military assignments for years. Neither was just some nobody that Yang could simply discard, which is exactly why Yang's campaign against them had to be conducted a half-step at a time,
Starting point is 00:13:37 in gestures too small to individually merit a response. A drum call here, a beating administered there, a kingship revoked with a military defeat, cover, rather than in anything either man could point to and call an open declaration of war. The cleanest single instance of it came early, December 1853, in fact, the movement's first winter in its new capital, in an exchange that survives because the Taiping bureaucracy, with a bureaucracy's instinct for paperwork, apparently thought it worth writing down. Young, playing the reformer, suggested to Hong that the heavenly palace already held more than enough robes and embroideries,
Starting point is 00:14:22 and that further orders for more should be delayed for a season. Wei Chang Hui, seeing an opening to align himself with Hong's own comfort and prerogatives, rather than Yang's austerity, pushed back directly to the throne. Quote, You are second brother are the true sovereign of all nations of the world, and you are rich in the possession of all within the four seas. Although robes and garments are sufficient, it will still be necessary to be constantly engaging in making up more." It was, on its face, flattery that any sovereign might have welcomed.
Starting point is 00:15:00 But Yang turned it into a trap. He begged Hong's pardon for what he was about to say, and then said it. If the robes were sufficient, as everyone agreed, then delaying further orders would let the whole court witness the Heavenly King's own virtues of economy and love of man on display. Virtues that waste suggestion, he pointed out, would have robbed him of the chance to demonstrate. Hong did not split the difference. He praised Young by name as a bold and outspoken minister in the old Confucian mold. The kind future ministers under the young monarch should be taught to imitate, and noted, pointedly, that Wei's flattery, however sincere,
Starting point is 00:15:47 lacked that same straightforward virtue. Wei had tried to be useful to his sovereign and been publicly out-argued by a rival using the sovereign's own values against him in front of the whole court on a matter of the household linens. Chinzra Gong's humiliation that same season was quieter, but no less deliberate. it. Invited to a banquet, Hong held to mark one of God's visitations, he was reminded afterward, gently but unmistakably, that his presence at such an occasion was a rare grace, one that would not survive Hong Shio Quan's own eventual death, because Chin was, and would remain a minister,
Starting point is 00:16:29 not a king. The distinction mattered enormously in a court this obsessed with rank. Young, for his part, had by then arranged for himself an inner family of his own, an officially sanctioned hierarchy of four brothers, with Jesus First, Hong Xiu-Tuan second, a contested third slot belonging to either the safely dead South King, Feng Yun Shan, or to Hong's four-year-old heir, and Yang himself, fourth. A circle of actual kinship that Wei Chang Hui and Chin Zhuge Gang, senior commanders both, were simply not admitted to. An official history of the movement's beliefs, written by two of Yang's own advisors and published
Starting point is 00:17:15 under his personal authority the following year, went further still, describing Yang as sent by the Heavenly Father himself to serve as, quote, the senior assistant and the chief of staff of the Heavenly Kingdom, end quote, and drawing a careful doctrinal line between Yang's own holiness and the merely human eminence that was all other kings, Wei and Shidakai alike, were permitted to claim. He did not spare the heavenly king this lesson either, and the sharpest version of it landed at the very end of 1853 in the middle of what was otherwise a very ordinary working day, with no announcements or warning. Four of Young's palace women were with him when the trance took him that morning, and it was to these four that God spoke first.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Hong Xiu-Cuan, the message ran, had grown both harsh and indulgent. Harsh to the women who attended him, indulgent toward his four-year-old son, who was allowed to smash the gifts he was given and play carelessly in the rain. Four specific women, named individually, were to be released from Hong's own palace service and transferred instead into Yang's household. By the time Wei Chang Hui and the rest of the court arrived to hear it, God had already returned to heaven, and the message came to them by the way it came to everyone,
Starting point is 00:18:43 kneeling secondhand through the women who had heard it first. That alone would have been an extraordinary thing for a man to accomplish via trance, reassigning the sovereign's own attendance to himself, under cover of divine command, and leaving no one in the room able to object without effectively calling God a liar. But the East King was not even finished with Hong that day. In a second visitation, this time in Hong's own court, God ordered the heavenly king himself to receive 40 strong blows of the rod for the same derelictions of duty. The harshness, indulgence, and the general failure to govern his own household as a sovereign should. And Hong Xiu Chen, son of God, second only to Christ
Starting point is 00:19:34 in the Taiping's accounting of heaven's own family, knelt down to receive them, because there was no theological ground left under his feet from which he might refuse. The blows almost certainly never fell. The moment the heavenly king prostrated himself in submission, the heavenly father relented, forgave, and withdrew back up to heaven, which was, if anything, actually the more frightening outcome. Young had not even needed to strike him. The kneeling had been the point. A rod that lands 40 times on a back has spent itself. A rod that hovers once its target has knelt can hold there forever. That exchange essentially summarizes this whole conflict in miniature.
Starting point is 00:20:32 A man claiming to speak for the divine had just brought the actual son of God by the movement's own settled doctrine to his knees before his own court, under sentence of beating, and walked away from it, not punished but vindicated. His authority now even larger for having never used. it. Great news. The federal EV rebate is back. There was, theoretically, a check on this, and thus, it's worth understanding exactly why that check had already failed by the time any of this took place.
Starting point is 00:21:21 The Taiping leadership had been built on two ideas that worked well enough separately, but not at all, together. The first was divine sanction. Hong Shuo's authority came from his own unrepeatable vision, and Yang Xiu Qing's came from his ongoing trances. And between the two of them, once Xia Tiao Kui, who had claimed to speak for Jesus Christ, was killed outside Changsha years before, there was no third channel to God left in the movement. The second idea, though, was that of brotherhood. All of the original kings, the Guangxi veterans who had organized this thing at Thistle Mountain and shared every danger of the long trek north, were supposed to be equals under God,
Starting point is 00:22:10 regardless of title, sharing the founding and expecting to share the reward. Shidakai himself, years later, would look back on that early fellowship with something close to grief once it had become clear that it was truly gone. Divine sanction and brotherhood are not the same claim, not even remotely, and do not point the same direction. One says that some men speak for heaven while the rest must kneel. The other says all the founders are underneath their titles, still brothers who arrived at this altogether.
Starting point is 00:22:52 As long as both ideas could be held loosely at the same time, without anyone forcing the contradiction, the leadership could function. But once Yang Xiu Qing began using the first claim to run roughshod over the second, reassigning the Heavenly King's own household staff, sentencing him to the rod, making the North King walk beside a sedan chair as though he were little more than a servant, there was no constitutional mechanism inside this system for the other kings to invoke. You can't outvote a man who speaks with the voice of God. You cannot appeal his rulings to a higher authority, because he is, by his own claim and the movement's own accepted doctrine, already the highest
Starting point is 00:23:39 judge of the highest court in the universe. The two men who might have once supplied some kind of counterweight were both already long dead. Xiao Chao Gui, the West King, had carried his own thin sliver of doctrinal authority as the voice of Jesus, and might have at least stood as a second pole for Yang to negotiate around rather than simply overrule. Feng Yun Shan, the South King, had never held any claim to speaking for heaven at all. But he was the architect of the original movement, its organizer and teacher, the man who'd built the godworsh literally out of nothing in the Guangxi hills before even Hong Xiu Chen had arrived to lead them himself. And he had thus carried the kind of moral standing that might well have
Starting point is 00:24:29 restrained an ambitious colleague without needing a divine trance to do it. Both of those men, though, were gone. Xiao killed outside Changsha, Feng killed on the road to Quan Zhou. What was left by the summer of 1856 was exactly two kinds of power left in the room. A man who could speak for God and men who could only speak for themselves. There was no diplomatic solution available to that kind of arrangement. There was only one lever those men had left, and it was the one a conceivable. Conspiracy against a divine voice will always eventually reach for, because it's the only argument such a voice cannot preempt.
Starting point is 00:25:16 After all, a blade doesn't require the other man's premises to be true. None of this made Yang Xiu Qing especially well-liked on top of everything else. Government intelligence reports from these years, not an unbiased source, but not an uninterested one either. describe a man whose reputation inside his own capital had curdled badly by 1856, ruthless with any officer who showed him insufficient deference, and by the government's account, keeping the largest harem of any Taiping leader, at a time when this movement's own official doctrine treated even husbands and wives as siblings under God, and forbade them each other's beds.
Starting point is 00:26:01 People laughed behind his back, the same reports say. carefully, one has to assume, and never with an earshot. The resentment reached into the ranks themselves. One of the generals serving directly under Yang, in testimony he'd give years later after his own capture, remembered specifically enough to still taste bitterness through the page. That Yang wouldn't let a victorious army rest. That troops coming back from beating the government's forces in the field were sent straight back out to do it again, before they'd even been allowed back inside the city gates.
Starting point is 00:26:37 So, there was certainly no shortage of men with reasons to want Yang gone. What there wasn't, until the summer of 1856, was an opening to do something about it. Because the one thing holding this entire fractured leadership in the same city cooperating was the government siege outside those very walls. So long as Xiang Ruiangor, Strong's camp sat there strangling the approaches. Nobody could afford another war within the war. Break the camp, and you break the only thing keeping the peace. The strange thing is that the Qing court's own intelligence service saw this coming a full
Starting point is 00:27:20 year before it happened. Government reports from 1855, watching Nanjing from the outside through informants and captured couriers and whatever else a besieging army could get his hands on, had already predicted an impending battle for power among the Taiping leadership, in terms specific enough that whoever wrote them understood the shape of the resentment building around Yang Xoching, even better than the Taiping's own surviving kings seemed willing to act on. It took the government's own defeat, oddly enough, to finally trigger what the government's own analysts had already called a year prior.
Starting point is 00:27:58 The people who could see the fracture developing, most clearly, were the same ones with every reason to keep pretending that they saw nothing at all. The Qing siege broke their camp in June, and within days, Yang Xiu-Ching had made the one move that turned all that built-up resentment into decisive action. It was, on its face, simply a routine piece of administration. The kind of order a court issued after a great victory without anyone reading much in into it. Shedakai was sent west back to Hubei, to consolidate what the recent campaigns had won.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Chin Zhur Gong, not two weeks removed from breaking the northern camp himself, was redeployed east to Danyang. In Jiang Si, Wei Tang Hui, still smarting from years of exactly this kind of quiet humiliation, was now sent to Nan Chang, in Jiangxi, into that same stranded penniless province where Zheng Guo Fan was still sitting. though the two armies had no reason to cross paths. Three armies, three directions. All of them at exactly the moment their commanders might have expected some rest and reward after the summer's great victory.
Starting point is 00:29:16 And once they were gone, once the only three men in Nanjing with the standing and the troops to contest him were several days hard riding away, and with word of Shang Rang's death at Danyang freshly arrived to close the books on the old war, The Heavenly Father descended from heaven one more time. Yang fell once more into his trance, summoned Hong Xiu-Cen to the East King's own palace, and there, in the borrowed voice of God, requested that Yang Xiu-Ching too be granted the title of 10,000 years. What was actually being asked for here wasn't a promotion or a rise in rank. It was Parity
Starting point is 00:30:02 Back at Yong'an At the investiture of the Five Kings This had all been enumerated out Hong held the compass points And heaven itself The Lord of 10,000 years Wan Sui Yang, one rank down,
Starting point is 00:30:20 was the Lord of 9,000 years A gap of exactly 1,000, Ritually Precise and gaps as precise as that only stays stable, as long as both men agree they matter more than what's actually happening on the ground. What Young wanted now was not 9,500, or some negotiated increment that left the hierarchy nominally intact. He wanted the same number, the same words, that same standing at the very top of a cosmology that this movement has been five years
Starting point is 00:30:56 building around exactly this form of arithmetic worth. If Yang got 10,000 years, then there ceased to be a meaningful difference between the Son of God and the man who spoke on demand with the voice of God. One historical point of caution here, at the end of the beat rather than in the middle of it, nearly everything that we know about this demand reaches us through hostile channels. Li Xiu Cheng's prison confession written years afterwards. Qing intelligence files. accounts composed when every principal witness was dead,
Starting point is 00:31:32 and the survivors had every reason to make Yang the arch-villain of the piece. There are historians who doubt this usurpation story entirely. What no one doubts is what the men around Yang believed about him that summer, and what they decided to do about it. Heng Xiu-Cen was, by any account, pretty effectively trapped. His loyal commanders were gone. Refusing outright, with Yang's own soldiers still garrisoned throughout the city, and Yang's spies presumably listening through every wall,
Starting point is 00:32:09 was obviously not a very survivable proposition. So he did what a cornered man does when the only weapon he has left is time. He agreed, and then he suggested, with every appearance of pious accommodation, that such an honor should be properly marked, perhaps on Yang's upcoming birthday, just two months off, when it could be celebrated with a ceremony that such an event truly deserved.
Starting point is 00:32:40 And then, somehow slipping past a spy network that had until that point, seemingly seen just about everything, Hong sent his own trusted riders after the three departed generals, with orders that amounted to whatever you're doing, stop it, and come back now, quietly. Two of them didn't wait to be asked twice.
Starting point is 00:33:05 Wei Chong Hui made the best time. He handed the Jiangxi campaign over to his subordinates, no explanation needed, an urgent summons from the Heavenly King, requiring none, and pushed his own veteran troops back toward Nanjing at forced march. Chin Zhur Gong, closer to begin with and fresh off the summer's victories with troops who had just proven themselves against the government's best had already reached the Capitol and was waiting. On the night of September 1, 1856, close to midnight, Wei Chong Hui arrived at the gates with some 3,000 men behind him. Inside the city, consultations moved
Starting point is 00:33:44 fast. Hu Yi Guang, the deposed Yu King, whom at least some accounts also place inside Hong's owned extended family by marriage, and a brief exchange with Hong himself. The question on the table was that of timing, whether to wait for Shidakai, still days out on the road from the west, or to move now, while there was still a chance of catching Yang's own loyal garrison, some 6,000 men inside the city walls who believed, not unreasonably, that they served the actual voice of God, before word could reach them and they could rally. They decided not to wait. There is a version of this story, more than one version, in fact, and none of them fully
Starting point is 00:34:31 reconcilable with each other, about just whose idea this exactly was. One account has Hong himself giving Wei the order outright, with Shadakai's foreknowledge and consent. Another has Wei acting largely on his own initiative, perhaps in loose coordination with Chin Zhuge Gang, with Hong and Shi both aware that something was coming, but not anticipating what that would be. A third has the order limited at the start to a single name, only the East King, with everything that followed being Wei's own ad hoc addition. What survives from every version, regardless of who gave the first command, is that
Starting point is 00:35:15 responsibility for what actually happened was afterward, laid entirely and exclusively on Wei Chang Hui's head. Whatever Shedakhai did or didn't know beforehand, one fact isn't in dispute. He wasn't in the room. Heck, he wasn't even in the city. He was still working his own army back from Hubei, days out on roads that showed no more mercy to marching men than the river had shown to fleets. The one king who might have argued for waiting simply wasn't present to make any.
Starting point is 00:35:50 such argument. Whatever Nanjing decided that night, it decided without the wing king. What he would find out when he finally arrived was a different part of this story, but it's worth marking here that the most level-headed of the surviving kings was the one man that fate denied a vote. It happened that night, in the dark, before Yang Xiu-Cheng had any reason to expect it. Two doors down from the East King's Palace, an Irish mercenary went to sleep in a rented room he shared with one other foreign drifter. History has remembered neither man's name in a war that wrote down so much else.
Starting point is 00:36:38 He'd washed up in Nanjing the way a certain kind of rootless man washes up in any war. No particular loyalty to either side of it, no God in the quarrel, just the general 19th century current. that carried adventurers, deserters, and men with nothing left to lose toward wherever the fighting and the money were. He'd been in the city for months by then. He'd watched Yang Xiu Qing only weeks earlier lecturing 3,000 kneeling soldiers in a public square. Men, it was said, who'd hesitated to march out and fight.
Starting point is 00:37:14 He had no way of knowing that that would be close to the last public appearance the East King would ever make.
