Starting point is 00:01:09 We told you was going to keep giving you these bonus episodes and we're
Starting point is 00:01:45 back with another review. the 2020 horror film The Funeral Home, which was just recently released this year.
Starting point is 00:01:55 I'm assuming it is a foreign language film. So I think it got its United States release this year. I'm your host, Brian. And of course, you know who's always with me. My brother, Naz, what's up, man? Yo, yo, man. What's happening?
Starting point is 00:02:10 How are you guys doing up there? Oh, we're doing. We're doing. Same down here. Yeah, nothing's changed, unfortunately, but it's getting warmer up here, though. I will say that. Warmer during the day, but then as soon as the sun goes down, the temperatures drop. Not as cold as it is up there, but it's cold.
Starting point is 00:02:36 So, but it's supposed to get some snow next week, but the rest of this weekend, it's probably in the 50s. Better than negatives. summertime up here 50s All right Let's get into this New release This comes from Uncorked Entertainment
Starting point is 00:02:58 Appreciate you guys For allowing us to review this This is called the funeral Like I said previously This Okay quick synopsis Got to go to the Googles Let's see
Starting point is 00:03:11 An Undertaker and his dysfunctional family Have learned to accept the mischievous supernatural entities that visit daily until a new menace makes itself known. That was pretty good one. Let's go to IMPB. Bernardo is an undertaker. He runs his mortuary business in the same house where he resides. In the front of, in the front as his, he has his clients and in the back, his dysfunctional family lives among coffins.
Starting point is 00:03:43 Sorry. Messing up here. here. Among coffins, reefs. Yeah, can't read. Lives among coffins, reefs, and mischievous supernatural entities that visit on a daily basis. They attribute the paranormal manifestations to the dead bodies from their mortuary, mortuary work. Find the real source of all the madness will be their quest, but they might find a terrifying truth. This stars.
Starting point is 00:04:15 Oh, gosh. This is going to be. Apologies. Anybody from the movie, I butcher names on the regular. So let's give this a try. Luis Machin, Celeste Guerreras, Camila, Bacarani, Hugo Arana, and others. I'm just going to leave it at that. This is directed and written by.
Starting point is 00:04:45 Moraro Moraro Ibn Ojeda Said all those wrongs I believe this is an Argentinian film So yeah excuse me I don't mind I'm not up on my Spanish
Starting point is 00:04:58 But Nez What did you think of the funeral home All righty I wasn't too sure On what to expect with this one When I go into these films Especially when they're new I don't watch trailers
Starting point is 00:05:13 I don't read up on anything I just just click play and take it for what it is. I was kind of all over the place on this one. I mainly trying to figure out what was going on, what was happening here. But my wife, she also sat there and watched it with me. But in the end, I really enjoyed this film.
Starting point is 00:05:38 I was a little thrown with the ending, but overall, I enjoy. I thought it was a really good film. Everybody that was in it did their part. The Spanish that they were speaking. Again, I didn't know it was a foreign film. So I was like, okay, I better put my glasses on so I can read. When you speak Spanish, it was really fast because the subtitles were like just pop up.
Starting point is 00:06:11 And then next thing you know, they were saying. So it was a couple of times I had to rewind it to. to catch what they said. But that's not taking anything away from the film. That's just my slow reading. But overall, man, I thought this was a really good film. I don't really have anything negative to say about it other than nothing negative about the ending. I was just a little confused on what was happening.
Starting point is 00:06:37 I'm not sure if we're doing spoilers or not. But I felt everyone's pain in this film. the dread and the just the depression of of the mother in the film and I was like I was like what what is happening here I mean because there was so much that was that was going on up front but then as the film goes on we start to figure out why these people will live in the way they live and why there seem to be in arguments like pretty much every time they saw each other seems like they got into an argument so i mean once it once it got going and we figured out who each player was and what their background
Starting point is 00:07:23 story was in the film i was like oh okay i get it now but um i mean again overall i thought this was a really good film i mean i didn't uh again i don't really i'm nothing negative to say about the film um but yeah i mean i really enjoyed it what did you think of it i agree with you I enjoyed it. I do at times tend to have to watch subtitled films a second time because I usually miss neither what was said or what was happening while I was reading. But for a foreign language film, I really ended up enjoying this. I do see what you're saying about the end. It did kind of get a little jumbled.
Starting point is 00:08:07 But for the most part, I enjoyed the story. It definitely is a good representation of a dysfunctional family and depression. I thought the acting was pretty good. The direction was pretty good. It was shot pretty good. It was shot beautifully, I think. And the score, I really love the music in it. It just kind of set that eerie atmosphere.
Starting point is 00:08:33 And some of the makeup effects on the ghosts or the paranormal entities, or whatever you want to call them. I thought we're pretty good. And as the story was going on, I was slowly figuring out what was going on. And it was it was kind of crazy. You got this family. I don't think we're really going to go on the spoilers with these new releases.
Starting point is 00:08:56 We're just going to give our initial thoughts. But I will say this. I thought the whole aspect of them living, seeing these spirits initially and just kind of chalking it up to, oh, we work in a mortuary. So this is going to happen. And just kind of gone with it. It was kind of crazy to me because I, first of all, personally,
Starting point is 00:09:18 I applaud anybody that does that kind of work because I couldn't do it. Yes. And to just have spirits pop up and just kind of be like, well, we live in a funeral home. So that's going to happen. I'm sorry. I couldn't do it. But maybe that just was telling you something about their
Starting point is 00:09:36 their depression and everything where they were just accepting all this stuff happening. And I thought there was more to the movie than the paranormal stuff. As you brought up with the family, you know, and how they reacted to each other when they seen each other. I thought it was, I thought it was well played. Yeah. I mean, each character, the daughter, the mother and the stepfather, they all had issues with each other.
Starting point is 00:10:04 But, I mean, nothing really negative. They kind of build it up to where you think it is. But as the story moves on, you kind of, you figure out why each of these characters is, that has this little, this backstory. Because in the beginning, I was kind of, I was like, well, what's happening here? I mean, because then once the, the supernatural element starts, I was like, okay. And then I was thinking something else that. If I say what it is, I don't want to spoil it. But I was kind of like, hmm, okay.
Starting point is 00:10:42 So, but each character, I mean, it was just doom and gloom for each character. But I understood why they were that way. It wasn't like just, these are just miserable people. Well, miserable people and they want to live a miserable life. There was something behind each one of their story. So I really enjoyed that. This is a slow burn. It just doesn't jump right into the supernatural stuff.
Starting point is 00:11:10 I thought all the jump scares, I mean, they weren't really jump scares. They were more just eerie and creepy. But when you see things in the background, you do like, oh, whoa, what was that? You do feel scared. I mean, there was a couple times. I was like, all right, well, is something going to jump out at me or what? But they didn't go with the jump scares. I mean, there was maybe one or two, but it was the creepy, the creepy factor.
Starting point is 00:11:34 is what I really loved about that. Because when we watch horror films, we expect jump scares. We expect blood and gore and all of that. I mean, yes, there was some in it, but it didn't, like, force it down our throats with it. Because I think if they did with this story, it probably wouldn't have worked. I mean, that's my opinion. I mean, I really loved what they did. When there's minimal blood and everything in it.
Starting point is 00:12:00 So I, excuse me, I really liked how they did that. the practical effects that they did do in it with like the spirits on how they looked. I thought they just looked spooky. I thought that was good. And then when the blood and everything comes in the play, I mean, like I said, it wasn't just like gallons pouring out all over the place. And it was just a right amount of that to get its point across. Because you know that with some horror movies.
Starting point is 00:12:31 I mean, but then, I mean, there's some directors like Sam Rameen Evil Dead. when you stab somebody and gallons comes spilling out. You expect that from Sam Ramey. So, but this one, it was more of down to earth and a real life situation.
Starting point is 00:12:48 I don't think I can live in some house where I know there's going to be spirits like this. I mean, I am a spiritual person. I do believe that there's spirits all around us, but to see them constantly like they were, no, I don't think I would want to.
Starting point is 00:13:04 live there. And again, like Brian said, shout out to everyone that does this kind of work. Again, Brian and I, we couldn't do it. I mean, I don't even like going in the funeral homes if I don't have to. But yeah, I mean, that seems it takes a really
Starting point is 00:13:24 strong person to do that type of work. And it seemed like this gentleman in this one, it was wasn't really bothering him. I think it was just his his home life that again I don't want to spoil it
Starting point is 00:13:40 I mean his home life is what was is what was leading to his depression and for the younger girl the daughter her depression of losing a loved one and the mother her depression of coming from a
Starting point is 00:13:56 violent relationship an abusive relationship coming from that so I mean that's why I loved her each of their stories. I mean, there's a couple more characters that come into play in this, but I don't want to get into that because we're going to lead into spoiler territory. But I mean, essentially, it's just what you really get. I mean, there's, there's other people in this movie, but you only get like three people that you follow. Yeah, the stepfather, the
Starting point is 00:14:27 and the mother and daughter. Geez, what the hell were their names? Um, Bernardo was his stepfather Estella was the mom and Arena Yeah let's go with that one Yeah she was the daughter I mean but I mean I felt I felt for each each one of them
Starting point is 00:14:50 At first you're kind of like because when it seems like they were kind of going back and forth in the beginning You were kind of like oh my God I mean what what's their problem But I mean as a story goes on we find out what what their issues are, which each one of the characters issues are. Then you're like, oh, okay, now that's when the feelings come into play. I'm like, ah, okay, I understand why they're at each other's, not really at each other's throats, but just their situation in this house. But I would like to dive into it, but I mean, this movie is new,
Starting point is 00:15:26 and I don't want to ruin it for anyone. But overall, I mean, I thought it was a really, really good movie. I would definitely watch this again. If it comes out on Blu-ray, I'm pretty sure I would pick this up and have it in my library because I think this is a film that you can watch with friends or family. And then when the movie is over, sit there and discuss it. Because that's what my wife and I did. When the movie was over, we had to go, okay, this is what we saw this is what happened and then we were trying to figure it figure it out so that that's what i like about these type of films it's not just straightforward here it is uh jump scare jump scare
Starting point is 00:16:09 death movies over no this one had it may you had to put your thinking cap on to understand uh what was going on but i was again i was thrown at the ending so i wasn't really uh sure on from the very ending of the film. But, again, that didn't take anything away from it. It's not a negative review. I thought this was an awesome film. So if you guys come across it, definitely it would be worth your time to sit down and watch this film. Yep, I agree with Nez.
Starting point is 00:16:46 I really enjoyed this one. It definitely is a slow burn, but at the same time, the movie is, I think, barely over an hour, 20 minutes. So it's not a long movie. And I don't I don't really feel like any parts really dragged on. Like I said, the acting was great. The direction was great. The score really did it for me because at times it just added to that creepiness. And it worked for me.
Starting point is 00:17:17 And yeah, I want to send a special shout out to Unquarked Entertainment. And also Samantha over at October Coast. who hooked us up with this movie. Thank you so much. And we like to continue working with you. So keep sending us these movies and we'll get these reviews out. We'll plug your company, definitely.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Yeah, I mean, shout out to Uncourt. I mean, it was just, I thought it was an amazing film. This director, I'm not even going to try his name, but this is actually, actually his first full feature film he's directed a short back in 2017 so for being this is his first film I mean I thought this director really really did a good job I mean mainly with the setting of the film it's it's mainly a dark film I mean dark a dark as in dark lighting that's how dark this film is so it might be one of those films when you
Starting point is 00:18:24 turn off all the lights and sit there and watch it. But yeah, with the score, I thought the score was awesome. It fit every single scene and when it got going, probably in the final act, when everything was coming into play, I thought it went right along with that. I know some people don't like to watch foreign films because they have to read it. Um, but I, I, uh, tell them people stop being lazy. Yeah, I mean, I don't mind it. I mean, I, I'd rather read it than listen to a crappy dub job. Uh, because to me, in my opinion, when they dub films, foreign films, it takes the feeling
Starting point is 00:19:07 out of, uh, the dialogue. I mean, I'd rather read it in here, um, the, the excitement or the fear or, or the laughter in their voices, uh, when, when they're speaking their language. So I don't mind foreign films. I love watching them all. But this film, yeah, I definitely want to watch it again because I was, there was some things. I was kind of like, hmm, all right. I mean, that's why I said this is a film when it's done.
Starting point is 00:19:37 If you're watching it with someone, you can sit there and discuss the film because my wife took it in a totally different direction that I was thinking. and it made a lot of sense. I was like, oh, okay, cool, but I won't tell you what that is because it will ruin it for you. But yeah, nothing but good things about this film. Awesome film. And Encore, thank you for letting us watch this in. I'm sorry, what was the young lady's name?
Starting point is 00:20:05 Samantha over at October Coast. You can find them on social media, so definitely go follow the October Coast. I got nothing else to say because I don't want to jump into spoilers I don't want to ruin it for all right yeah yeah we're gonna we're gonna end this one early like I said when we do these these little bonus episodes they're going to be for new movies coming out so we're not gonna because me and as we can get deep into it and break down every part of the movie and tell you the whole movie but we're not going to do that so
