You have found the place where the horror returns.
Listeners beware.
This podcast contains major plot spoilers.
and the foulest of language.
Join us in celebrating the old and the new,
the best, and the worst in horror.
Welcome back, everyone, to The Horror Returns.
I'm Lance and Philip and Brian.
What's going on, guys?
What's up?
You guys ready to take a little trip down to the back rooms tonight?
I don't know if I ever want to go.
go to the back rooms.
No?
Yeah.
Not your idea of a good time.
My son sort of described it best.
He was like, it just sort of looks like they're going through the same room over and over with these like pea stained walls.
Oh, wow.
Not incorrect.
Yeah.
That seems like a pretty good description.
I couldn't get AJ to go with me this week.
She said, she watched the trailer and turned and said, really?
She said somebody, she says this looks boring.
Brian, you thought that the serial killer movie from two years ago was bad, right?
Where he was walking in the woods.
Well, I will get into it.
Oh, that movie sucked.
Okay.
AJ definitely would not have liked this one.
No.
I don't think so.
Yeah.
All right.
Cool of the week, guys?
I'll go first.
All right.
I got two action movies.
The first one is.
called One Spoon of Chocolate.
It is directed by
the Rizza. You guys know the Rizza.
Of course. I remember
the trailer for this one.
It stars
Shameek Moore, who is the voice
of Miles Morales into the
Spiderverse.
He plays a
war veteran
who gets out of the military
gets in a little bit of
trouble, goes to the prison
then for a couple of years, gets out,
makes it back home to Ohio to come to find out
his town is overrun by the worst people.
I mean, that sounds like a great fucking storyline, right?
The only drawback, it's a great movie,
great action.
The only drawback is this guy is not doing a voice
for Miles Morales.
That is his actual voice.
So when he talks, he sounds like a kid.
Oh, no.
You're visualizing Miles, huh?
Yeah.
I always thought, because he's a grown man.
I think he's almost 30.
And then when you hear him do Miles,
you're thinking of a teenage kid.
Yeah.
When you're watching this movie and he's like talking,
you're like, what the fuck?
I thought you were doing a voice.
That's your actual voice.
Oh, that can be off-putting, I would think.
Right, Philip?
Yeah.
That makes sense.
Well, because, you know, into the Spider-Verse was so amazing.
So it kind of...
If you're going to recognize that voice, that's where it's going to be from.
Yeah.
Riza did a good job directing.
The music was great in it.
So I think that one's available to rent or you know how to find it.
I will probably rent that one, man.
I wanted to see it from the trailer, so...
And the second action movie,
I watch was normal
starring Bob Gordon Court
Saul himself
Okay
He plays a
Sheriff who is basically
substituting in this small town
as sheriff because their sheriff
mysteriously died
And as he's getting to know
The town and the people
He realizes everybody's a little bit
Strange and everybody seems to be
hiding something.
Hmm.
Ah, okay.
I remember seeing a preview
for this.
I was, I'm kind of excited, yeah.
Yeah, the action's pretty good.
Bob Odenkirk kicks ass,
but he's not like,
he's not Bob Odenkirk for nobody.
Okay.
He's kind of like a regular guy,
a regular sheriff.
He doesn't have like a pass
where he was a hit man
or anything like that.
What did you think
about that second nobody movie it was fine yeah there was some scenes that were a little bit drawn
out i just kind of wanted to get to the action yeah and i didn't like the villain
just so happened to be bad guys at this place he's vacationing at what a what a coincidence
you got something about it it got a little silly i kind of wanted a continuation from the
first one because you
fucked up a lot of shit for some Russian
mobsters so that's got to go a little
bit deeper. Yeah, I was
a little disappointed. Yeah.
Hmm.
Still watchable, but
if you're comparing the first
and second one, there's no comparison
the first one's way better.
But yeah, this one
is directed by Ben Wheatley
which I didn't know
when I'm a big fan, Brian.
I didn't know it was directed by Ben Wheatley
and then when the action was happening
and random people were getting shot
accidentally it made me think of that movie Free Fire
Right
And then I found out it was directed by Ben Wheatley
Which he directed Free Fire
So the actions kind of got that style to it
Right that makes sense
Very chaotic
Had that signature huh
Chaotic over the top action
And good movie.
So I'll go with nobody for normal.
Normal?
Cool.
Oh, man, I'm going to check it out.
Can I rent it now, Brian?
Yeah.
Very nice.
All right.
So that's, that sounds like two good ones, man.
Yeah.
I wasn't going to start Spider-N-N-R, but I just got sidetracked.
I had a very busy week.
I've been sick for the past two weeks.
I can't get rid of this apparently summertime cold.
Yeah, that's a bummer.
Yeah.
Yeah, I tried to start Spider-Noire.
Did you?
Man, maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.
Uh-oh.
Did you go with black, do you go with black and white or color?
Uh, color.
Okay.
Might be, I heard it's a little better in black and white, but teach their own, I guess.
Probably is.
I just, I just, I don't think that I was in the right headspace and I wasn't really paying attention to it.
And it didn't, it didn't do anything to pull me in.
Yeah, I wasn't quite in the mood for it either.
I am hearing a lot of people said it's pretty good,
and they did drop the entire series,
which I do appreciate because Amazon Prime usually does week to week.
That's a plus for sure.
Yeah, I want to rewatch it and really invest some attention into it.
And, you know, that's not to say anything bad about it,
but it didn't it didn't draw me in i have no idea what happened on the first episode
sounds like you'll be re-watching i do hear people do recommend you watch it in black and white
it kind of fits the aesthetic yeah yeah and that should draw you in a little more
maybe i'll do black and white yeah aside from that dude that's that's all i've got man
so is your cool of the week cowboys off-season talk
yeah i don't know what cowboys off-season talk i mean i'm excited about their draft pick but uh yeah
i think i think i think the rams are gonna fucking do something this year man i'm excited about them
year after year huh yeah uh they keep they keep making really really bold moves that i think
they're never going to recover from and then they just make more bold moves
because they've got that
I can't remember his name off top of my head
but that young ass coach
and he's just
he's just letting his balls hang man
yeah
and yeah
like win or lose whatever
at least make some big moves
or be 8 and 8 every year
like the Cowboys have been doing for the past 30
yeah that doesn't get you anywhere does it
yeah
all right
so what's Spider-Man door
that you slept
through Phillip or?
Yeah, I guess.
I don't know.
I don't really have anything.
We might circle back.
I have an uncool of the week.
Not so cool of the week.
We got some more fucking animal.
I got my chicken coop built downstairs.
There you go.
All the birds are out of my fucking kitchen.
So that's a plus.
All right.
I'm writing down chicken coop.
Because they smell awful,
except this stupid goose on my shoulder because that's my daughter's baby.
That goose.
He looks like he's about to take a dump.
He probably is.
He's going to shit all down my back this whole time.
Kind of like a parrot.
They shit every 10 seconds.
It's a bird.
I don't know why we have these things.
It's insane.
Are you prepared for him to get bigger and still try to stay on your shoulder?
Well, I don't think that's going to work.
He's going to be huge.
Like every time he sees you, he tries to fly up to your shoulder.
shoulder. Yeah, he's just
going to hop up there. I'll be like a pirate
but like really weird
and awkward.
You just need to tape a peg leg
on.
Here be me goose.
I'll need to be that giant pirate
from the movie.
Okay.
That was weird.
That was weird.
But kind of awesome.
All right.
Lance, what you got?
Cool.
I finished
Daredevil born again.
Do you guys seen it again?
Yeah.
I finished it.
Yeah, it was...
I couldn't eat in my ears, man.
This is how the whole show is going to go.
I see it already.
What did you think of the second season?
I enjoyed it.
A little talkie-talkie
when they brought
some other characters from the
Netflix Marvel series in.
I was like,
This is going to be great.
And then the character was like,
oh, I'm not 100%.
I'm not really going to fight very much in this episode.
We're going to do more talky, talky.
But, you know, and then you get a cameo there at the end, of course.
But I don't know.
Overall, I enjoyed it.
You know, more courtroom drama, you know, and less action.
It's a banger last episode, though.
You know what?
That's what I just watched today.
so I just kind of like the
What's that problem?
Oh, they let Kingpin let loose.
I like the dynamic of how it ended.
I don't think he's getting reelected as mayor.
Doesn't look that way, does it?
Well, they kind of have done that from the beginning, though,
where they have like a whole lot of like tension buildup and talking and stuff
and then have like an episode with just balls out action.
Yeah.
Very true.
Very true.
Because they technically did the hallway scene in the final episode, but included, like, it would cut the Daredevil and then it would cut back to Kingpin going through people.
Yeah, slicing three people.
It was pretty intense.
Spoilers for everybody, but that random guy, he folded backwards up against the park.
Oh, yeah, that's right.
Them against the wall.
I got to watch more Daredevil, man.
Yeah, dude, check it out.
I'm going to check out Punisher Next, so the one-off.
Is it two hours, Brian, like a full movie?
It's like 47 minutes.
Ah, so just kind of an episode, kind of like Gary was, huh?
Yeah, it's just kind of, you remember where he left off from season one to Daredevil.
Right.
This is just kind of what he's been doing.
And from what I understand it, it's going to lead to what his character is going to be
doing in Spider-Man. So it's kind of like a bridge. I like it, man. I think, I think with the three
main characters, I don't know if you could get more perfect casting. Like Vincent Dinoffrio is the
kingpin. What's Philip? What's Philip laughing about? You got a goose climbing all over you?
A fucking bird won't shut the fuck up, man. Keep going. I'm sorry. Yeah, Daredevil's perfect,
but yeah, the casting for the Punisher was, I just think, I think spot on.
I mean, they're all kind of like I visualized him when I was reading the comic book, so I was impressed.
He's fantastic, and the little one-offs they put out.
I can't wait.
Because he's doing some acting in the beginning because it goes from emotional and then it jumps into the action.
Oh, man. Yeah, so, yeah, correct me if I'm wrong, Brian, but at the end of the last season,
and he just got out of imprisonment, right?
Yeah.
Okay.
And so this kind of picks up where he's been because he was absent from season two.
This is kind of where he's been.
Cool.
We get to catch up.
All right.
That's cool of the week.
Brian, we got any horror headlines?
The Fall 2 gets an official title.
fall to dead point.
Sure.
From the looks of the poster,
it looks like the budget's a lot bigger for this one.
Maybe not as CGI heavy.
They might do some actual location filming, you think?
Maybe, but that first one still made me uneasy.
Yeah, I think it made a lot of people uneasy.
Yeah, I didn't get to see in the theater,
but a lot of people said it kind of made them feel weird
watching on the big screen.
Non-horror news,
Zach Snyder is remaking
John Carpenter's classic
Escape from New York.
So I can assume
expect great visuals
and a boring story.
Probably.
I don't think you can make that story
boring, though, right, Philip?
Hopefully not.
Who they're going to...
So is it going to be Snake Pliskin?
Yeah.
They're going to have Snake Pliskin.
I don't think what's his name's going to do it.
Kurt Russell?
You don't think so?
Wyatt Russell.
White Russell?
Oh, Wyatt Russell.
Well, no, I mean, I'd be okay with them getting a new actor to play it,
but I think Kurt Russell's got to have a cameo.
Maybe he's going to be the president.
Yeah.
Make Kurt Russell the bad guy.
That would be great.
Yeah, he can still do it.
He can still do it.
Make him have that mustache for him.
the hateful A2
for no reason at all.
Because it's awesome.
That would be pretty cool.
That was a mustache.
That was a mustache.
The
backrooms and obsession
break records.
Backrooms becomes A24's
highest grossing opening weekend
of all time.
There were a lot of people
in the theater when I saw it today.
And obsession
is, I don't
know if it's breaking records, but
you know how each week in
the theater there's a drop off
of sales.
Sure.
Obsession every week since
its release has been
going up and up and up.
Well, because more people hear about it.
Word of mouth, yeah. Word of mouth.
Well, and
back rooms apparently
is a lot just from
video game lore and stuff. And I'm
not sure. Yes.
That the reviews are going to pan out.
we'll find out
with some of the people that
you know went to see it
I know there's been a big
thing going on
with the younger crowd
and the older crowd
seeing in the theater together
right
basically been like a chicken jockey
thing going on
okay
either get it or you don't
I'm going to ask more about that
when we get it
get into the review.
Okay.
Curious.
Oh, Alfred Hitchcock's
classic, the Birds, is getting
a TV limited
series starring Sarah Snook.
That name.
Okay.
I believe she's
saying that in my house.
Fucking birds.
Yeah, no shit.
Yeah, you can make a fan film.
It's called,
but it's going to be called
fucking birds.
And it's just going to be me slamming my hands against the ground.
Oh, here we go.
What's his name that directed 28 years later?
Danny Boyle?
Danny Boyle, okay.
Oh, yeah.
Sure, sure.
He says expect filming to happen on the third of the trilogy next year.
Okay.
a lot of people didn't think the third one was going to happen oh yeah i kind of forgot about that
i kind i sort of thought it was done i forgot yeah because the second one was the best reviewed one
but made the least money so they didn't think a third one was going to happen he is confident
it was a lot of fun that one it was yeah it was like like they they they picked scenes and
they just invested in them yeah for sure and let's not forget
he that's the one he didn't direct
yeah he chose wisely then right
if he had some say in who the director was going to be maybe
like i'm directing the third one
story wise and stuff it may not have been the best one but like
oh that was Alex Garland
yeah but like
just as a fun movie
that was definitely the best one agreed
let's see here
damien leone's next
movie will be Terrifier 4, but his next movie after that will be tortures of the damned,
and it is being produced by Sam Ramey.
All the news. All right. I guess that means it's time to take a little trip down to the trailer
park. And Brian is going to bring us the big, the small, and sometimes the very, very weird,
kind of like backrooms. What's the trailers tonight, Brian?
well we'll start with the weird first teenage sex and death at cam miasma
starring
probably shouldn't be in the title of your movie
just as jane's probably an end joke man you know
this is starring
Hannah Endbinder
Gillian Anderson and Patrick Fisher and this is directed by Jane
Shewinburn.
She directed I saw the TV glow.
Okay.
And also, we're all going to the World's Fair.
I was trying not to bring that one up.
Yeah, one of those movies I loved, one of them, I hated.
So I don't know what I expect.
I mean, that's important.
It was like a, like, but I mean, if you think of that as like a stepping stone.
Okay.
Then that sort of makes sense.
I guess so.
It was cool as like a little indie movie that was made by just a person.
Yeah, it was very bizarre.
Lance, we'll start with you since you loved her last movie.
Yeah.
You know what?
Now that we've seen this slightly longer trailer, I'm a little bit more excited, actually.
You know, I kind of, I don't know.
You know, that first scene where you see all the huge blood splatter go all the way up to the top of the screen,
I'm like, ah, this is where we're going.
Like, super surreal and kind of silly.
But I don't know.
I've got faith in the actors.
I've got faith in, you know, what they can do to make this kind of weird.
There were a couple of scenes that I felt looked pretty captivating.
So I'm all in for this one, actually.
You know, the more I see of it, the more I like it.
So I think that's a good sign.
I'm definitely all in.
This looks super fun.
Like everything about the trailer,
makes me think it's going to be awesome.
Yeah, very met.
Because I'm reading the synopsis,
a director making a slasher sequel
becomes obsessed with casting the original film's final girl,
leading both women into psychological and sexual chaos.
Jillian Anderson and sexual chaos.
What is not to like?
And apparently, from what I...
I don't know if I'm digging her accent, though.
Really?
I don't know.
Maybe.
Maybe.
I don't know.
It was just a trailer, so it's hard to gauge.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And apparently from what I read, because she has, in real life, she has anxiety.
Okay.
Okay.
That makes sense.
There was a scene filmed in the movie that was gory that gave her a panic attack and they had to stop filming.
Oh.
Well, that'll add to the.
to the stories that are being told before.
This hits theater's August 7th.
Hmm.
Interesting that it's a theater movie.
I bet you this is going to end up being a top 10 one.
You think so?
Yeah, I think it's going to be really good.
I could see that.
Yeah, it's got a lot of things going for it.
Like I say, the first trailer that we saw Brian
that was only maybe like a minute or something,
I was like, I'm not so sure, but this one, I'm like, okay, I think I'm all in.
I think that's a very good sign.
Now we're moving from one of Lance's up-and-coming favorite directors to one of his all-time
favorite directors, Eli Ross.
Yes.
Ice cream man.
Yes.
Classic.
I am all about this trailer.
Yeah?
He said that he was going to bring the gore with this one.
and he's picking it.
Looks that way, Brian.
What did you guys think?
This is another one.
I think this might be topped in.
No shit.
No shit.
I love the trailer.
Yeah?
I love it.
Yeah.
It looks fantastic.
It reminds me of that movie Cooties.
Same here with Josh Gadd, right?
Yeah, Josh Gad, Elijah Wood, a bunch of people.
It looks fun
Uh-huh
I can't believe
I can't believe I'm saying this Brian
This looks like it's going to be in my top ten also
Every fucking
It looks like all practical effects
Dude I loved every fucking second
Of this trailer
I want to watch it again
I really do
This is going to be a lot of fun
Eli is back
Maybe
And this also comes out August 7th, same day as the previous year.
Who would have thunk it?
Maybe they'll change one.
Although they do kind of speak to two different audiences, so who knows?
Yeah.
You guys have that AMC pass thing, don't you?
I used to.
Pedro still does it.
Oh, well, Pedro's watching the show.
No doubt in the same day, I would imagine.
Fano Pedro.
Man, I wish my movie theater did that stuff.
I don't have an AMC close to me.
Yeah.
I kind of like our old school theater.
They used to have a little past thing that I bought, but whatever.
Yeah.
Did you use a lot?
Yeah.
Oh, I made like bank off of that movie pass.
Oh, everybody loved movie pass.
When that was the deal.
Yeah.
Yeah, I had movie pass, but then I realized I was only going to, we have Regal,
up here.
Okay.
And Regal had their own movie pass.
Ah, okay.
And so I kind of switched over,
but don't have it anymore
because that was when I was going to watch
everything in the theater.
Yeah, I remember those days.
Everybody loved movie pass
apparently except the people that invested in it
if you'll watch the documentary.
Well, yeah, because it was a terrible idea.
How are they still around?
They're back.
Yeah, they're going to have to do some
some sort of membership at some point here
because new movies are not doing great right now.
Right.
Unless your original horror movies.
That's true.
Apparently.
That's true.
Surprisingly.
Okay, where are we?
Final trailer.
Adam Wingard's action horror thriller.
On Slot, starring Adria Arjono, I'll probably mispronounced her name, Rebecca Hall, and your boy, Lance, Dan Stevens.
Of course, yeah, those two work together a lot.
Also starring...
Dan Stevens is in all of his movies, isn't he, pretty much?
Yeah, pretty much.
Michael Bean's in this?
Michael Bean, yeah.
All right. Blast for the past.
Multi-division UFC champion Alex Pereira is in this.
Okay, so he's going to play the killer then.
Well, it's multiple killers.
And I have a theory about this movie that I think connects Dan Stevens to the guest.
Oh, that makes perfect sense.
Did you, Brian, that makes perfect sense, man.
Let me break down my theory.
So we got this small.
although looks like a trailer park with our basically Final Girl.
Seems to be ex-military, probably going through PTSD, something,
has to protect her daughter from a skate military project.
I think they're basically like super soldiers.
Right.
And if you go back to the guest starring Dan Stevens,
when the military came looking for him, they said they did experiment.
on him and he was a killing machine.
Okay.
Well, makes perfect sense.
So it's kind of an unofficial sequel, probably.
I hope so.
What did you guys think of Onslaught?
That would be cool.
Yeah.
It looks like it's going to be pretty awesome.
Like, I like the idea, the whole Super Soldier monster thing.
Hopefully it doesn't weigh too heavily in the political implications.
I'm a little more.
I'm a little worried about that aspect of it.
I'm like, if this is a white supremacist monster, I swear to God.
Well, I don't know about that.
Well, Alex Pereira is Brazilian.
Yeah.
So that gives me high hopes.
And I'm looking at the trailer now.
And show Alex Pereer and they cut to what I think he looks like as a super soldier.
Right.
Yeah.
So he's definitely one of them.
Okay.
Well, I mean, I don't know.
Because it looks cool.
Yeah, we're going to watch it.
I think I can dig it.
Yeah.
I just hope they don't get too silly with the 80-pound girl beating up a 700-pound monster.
Oh, wow.
What are you going to do?
Well, she mentions that she has, she tells.
She's a super soldier.
Just tell her daughter to go high because she'll get all her.
her guns.
Right.
Yeah.
Well, she obviously knows what she's doing, so you get that.
In the trailer, we are introduced to her sniping some fruit.
So she's been keeping up with this.
Yeah, that's right.
Might have a year next vibe.
No one these type of movies, she's got like an underground bunker filled with weapons.
Just like Halloween.
Yeah, that was my thought, too.
This hits theater's September 4th.
Okay, a little later than the other two then.
Just past Blackbuster season then, or right on the tail end of it.
But still summertime.
Yeah.
Still summertime, especially here in Florida.
Yeah.
Where it's always summer.
Yes.
All right.
that was the final trailer
all right
on to listener feedback
this week the podcast
we shine the podcast spotlight
on
genre exposure
a film podcast
a biweekly show
dedicated to exploring and celebrating
cinema in all its forms
the show grew out of a
long running movie club
where members took turns
curating specific movies to challenge each other
and broaden their cinematic horizons.
In regards to the 28 years later trilogy,
Pat Crusoe says,
really hope they get to cap it off after how great Bone Temple was.
True with that.
Yeah.
Hopefully.
It was a lot of fun.
Mostly that maiden scene.
It just made the movie.
Yeah.
Yeah.
In regards to killer clowns from outer space, Pat Crusoe says for someone who grew up scared
to death of clowns, Stephen King's It and those scenes in Peewee's big adventure.
This is a fun, goofy favorite of mine.
Yeah, killer clowns is great.
Always good for some 80s cheese.
They're supposed to do like a series, like the, what was it, the Keogh
Chiodo brothers, the guys that made the movie?
Yeah, I thought they were going to do something like that.
Like a remake or...
Yeah, that video game that came out.
Oh, I haven't played the video game.
That'd be fun.
Chuck and popcorn and people?
Yeah, I think you can play as the clowns
or as someone being chased by the clowns,
one of those type.
That sounds like a lot of fun.
I'll check that out
All right
In regards to pumpkinhead
Amy Bentley says
I was just talking about this one last night
In regards to five must die
Pat Crusoe says pretty sweet poster
Is there a trailer
Five must die
Which one is that?
It is a new movie
Where they were describing
It as Ghostbusters meets
Ready or not
No trailer because it is still in production.
Let's see.
And we got some extra listener feedback here.
We got many congrats on reaching the 10 years running,
fantastic news, and one of my favorite podcasts.
It's been an honor to be a part of it and on the odd occasion.
Every week for 10 years is really an achievement.
Long may it continue.
And you can tell it is Matt Wood.
by the way that he spells honor honor with a you awesome thanks matt we love that thank you so much
hey matt you're a part of that too hell yeah yeah we just got to we just got to schedule an
afternoon show sometimes so he can make it without uh being up until 4 a.m yeah because he does live
in the future right that's true not as far in the future is bead right like an alternate reality
It's crazy.
And let's see.
Matt Wood also says,
with regards to the trip and over your dead body,
I think your mistake was watching these movies back to back.
The trip back in 2021,
and I loved this last week.
I hadn't realized it was an unintentional remake,
but I had a lot of fun with it.
Not sure of Seagall's performance, though.
wrong pick for me.
Can you see him banging Weaver?
Oh, Jason Segal.
What do you say again, Philip?
I'm sorry, man.
I talked about that.
Not sure of Segal's performance, though.
Wrong pick for me.
Can you see him banging Weaver?
Nah, dude.
Not at this lifetime.
I can see him banging her over Seagal.
That's true.
That's true.
Good point.
as long as he's in his chair
I think we can make it happen
I see the last
last couple movies he did before he
retired I'm doing retired in quotes
I think I think so Brian I think he sat down
a lot in those movies right lots of sitting
he had a fight scene while sitting
no stop
I've heard that he had a bunch of fight scenes
while sitting I know I've seen at least
a couple of them.
Doing his
hip keto, his hand stuff.
Yeah.
From his chair?
Yeah.
Well,
whole new level of laziness
there, I guess.
Don't watch that one he did with
Mike Tyson.
That movie is boring and garbage.
And apparently
there's no conclusion
to that fight they had because
Sigel said he wasn't going to lose
to Mike Tyson in a movie.
I think at this point
what people know Stephen Seagal most for
is eating that carrot
I don't know if you've seen that little clip
Is that when he was like in Russia?
Internet gold, yeah
Like I was the like President of Belarus
had given him a carrot
And he's like oh thank you
And then like takes a chop out of a carrot
It's just the goofiest looking thing
And then he does the dumbest dance in the world.
It's like, what is happening right now?
It looks fake.
It's like made to be mean.
Is that, did they, Brian, do you think, Brian, do you think he had to, like, punch his government,
carrot issued card for that or something?
Like, don't they give them, like, one carrot, one potato and a bag of rice every month or something?
I don't know.
Okay.
Oh, he gets a lot more food than that every month.
He is getting larger.
It looks like it.
It looks like it.
Maybe a lot of borsh.
You guys remember his TV show where he was like sheriff deputy.
Yes.
Yes.
I do.
I think I started watching it.
Yeah, there's a comedy special on that that is fantastic.
It's a fuck, man.
I can't remember the comedian's name.
It'll come.
back to you, man.
Yeah.
He's got a whole bit on that, on just Stephen Seagall and how he was like doing that show.
Is it Tom Seguer?
Tom Seguer.
Tom Seguer.
Tom Seguer's bit on Stephen Seagall is so funny.
Okay.
You have to YouTube it right now.
I'll check it out.
But, Philip, I think I just realized what your cool of the week actually was, not the chicken coop.
Tom Segura's bit on
Well maybe
But I'm thinking
You've shared us a video dude
I love that YouTube show also
Dude the Y Files
Oh the Y Files
That dude
Drop some knowledge man
Yeah
I'm gonna switch it to the Y Files
For your cool of the week
Is that cool?
Fair enough, yes
Yeah because okay
So like it just popped up
Because I was kind of looking for stuff
On back rooms
And there was a Y Files episode
on it. And it was really cool. Man, that show was a whole lot of fun.
It is. It goes way deep into the conspiracy stuff and then like back into reality towards
the end. Yes. He's not as fun. He's very much a skeptic. It's important. He's very much a skeptic. He
doesn't just buy into all of it. Have you ever seen it, Brian, the Y files? I was going to watch it
after we recorded. Okay. A lot of fun. Oh, it's cool. He goes into the,
the origins of the back rooms
and stuff. Yeah.
Because apparently there's two fans
of the back room.
Okay. There's like the purest
and then there's the others
that create their own
fan fiction and
mythos and add shit
to it. That makes sense.
Yeah. So yeah, that's
okay. I can't say
anything yet. See, and I didn't
realize how deep it goes.
I think that's why it's making so
much money is because of like the internet
fandom.
Dude,
behind this idea.
My theater was full.
My theater was full, dude, on a Wednesday afternoon.
Okay.
Yeah.
My daughter had to explain some of it to me.
Yeah.
No,
yeah.
My daughter was really excited about going to see it initially.
Initially.
All right.
We'll get there.
Well,
partially because it's a,
it's also a video game in VR.
Okay.
I can see that
Anyway, we'll get there
All right
But that's it for listener feedback

All right
On to the back rooms
Let's see
So I guess we'll start with the 2022
So is this
Is the whole series of the movies or just
The playlist I sent you
was the whole series
but we can just initially talk about
the first episode.
Okay.
I'm going to talk about all of it a little bit
if that's okay.
Yeah.
Well, so I think it all sort of blends into the same thing.
The same mythos, right?
Like a weird memory that's not quite right.
Yeah.
But I didn't.
Okay, never mind.
So the backrooms from,
from 2022.
An analog horror series
revolving around
a mysterious alternate dimension
known as the backrooms.
Director and writer is
Kane Parsons,
aka Kane Pixels,
online creator.
Parsons is a completely
self-taught in visual effects
and animation. He learned to use
Blender and Adobe
After Effects,
Adobe After Effects,
primarily through online
tutorials.
Dude,
everything is on the internet right now.
If I had the internet,
if I had YouTube when I was a child,
I would be a professional baseball player right now.
Would you?
I think so.
I've learned a shitload just coaching my kid.
I can imagine,
yeah.
Then I totally would have learned as a kid.
Oh, I use YouTube.
I've used YouTube for like probably 10 years or more,
like to just fix shit around the house.
And on the car.
Although new cars, new cars you don't tinker with them is the way you used to be able to, guys.
I'm close to being a boomer, so I can remember when you could actually work on your own car without having to hook it up to a computer.
Well, I watch YouTube.
Yeah?
To watch the dumbest shit.
Yes, you do.
You've told us about some stuff, man.
What kind of dumbest shit?
That's kind of dumb shit that I wouldn't do, but I'm glad somebody's doing it from.
my entertainment.
Yes.
Fun to watch.
Fun to watch.
Jackass.
Oh, I saw the trailer for that today.
Yeah, I'm excited and sad.
Final movie.
But those guys are old now and Johnny got that brain injury on that last movie.
Oh, yeah.
And bones break a lot easier when you get over 40.
Yeah.
He got the brain trauma.
He couldn't hit by a damn bull for like the fifth damn time.
Oh, that'll do it.
Yeah, maybe it's time to hang it up, buddy.
You've proved it.
But sadly, I don't think Bam's going to be involved again
because they're still got their little dispute.
That's too bad, man.
All right.
The backrooms as a concept.
originated in a 4chan thread in 2019.
The thread featured a single still image of an empty yellow room and red.
If you're not careful and no clip out of reality in the wrong areas,
you'll end up in the backrooms where nothing but the stink of old moist carpet,
the madness of mono yellow,
the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum
hum, buzz, and the approximate
600 million square miles
of randomly segmented
empty rooms to be trapped
in. God save you
if you hear something wandering
nearby, because it sure
as hell has heard you.
Creepy. Wow.
I like it.
Yeah.
All right, Brian.
Tell us about the
the original short film here?
I enjoyed this one a lot.
Yeah.
It basically starts out with
I think they're teenagers or something
making a little short film
filming stuff and then
the camera, the guy holding the camera
takes a step backwards and he falls
through the ground through a portal
and he's in the backrooms.
And we've all seen what the backrooms
looks like. It's just endless yellow rooms.
Furniture's stacked up, weird shaped.
Nothing makes sense.
Doors aren't.
Everything's kind of like warped.
A little bit off, right?
Like a dream world.
Yeah.
Hmm. Okay.
And the farther he goes into it, he starts hearing something following him and then
chasing him.
And then he's running, running, running.
And I can't remember if he goes to a door or not,
but he ends up falling through the sky,
which kind of fucking sucked.
That's right.
Popped out of the wrong wormhole.
Yeah, right.
And throughout the web series,
you get little clips of this group we'll talk about in the movie,
investigating, researching,
and then you get other little short,
films of other people that found portals and ended up in the back rooms.
One of my favorite ones was the girl that she taped off that little square and was dropping
baseballs in it.
Oh, that's kind of mean.
Yeah.
Somehow it got sucked in that little hole.
And the crazy part is, I thought, was when she found that car that must have went
through a portal and crashed into one of the rooms.
Makes sense.
Yeah.
Makes sense.
But I thought this was all very creative because Kane Parsons was a teenager at the time.
And it made me check out some of his other work.
I recommend you guys check out the oldest view.
I talked about it before.
I started it.
Where he finds that mall.
Yeah, I didn't get that far, but I watched the first one, like where he goes out in the country, like on that private property.
Yeah.
And this is, like, this is after the back rooms?
I think so.
Okay.
Kind of similar, right?
Kind of similar, the way that it starts and everything.
And he's very good at what he does because you would think this is actual rooms or in the oldest view, an actual mall.
But it's all made on a computer.
Amazing.
Yeah.
Unbelievable.
Like, if you look really close, you can sort of tell.
But it's like.
Yeah.
And there's issues with shadowing, I think.
Well, and it's kind of like AI at this point.
Like there's something that's a little off, but I couldn't tell you exactly what it is.
Uncanny Valley, as they call it, right?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, it's impressive.
It's impressive, man.
Especially for a fucking kid, dude.
Oh, yeah.
It's like the backroom's concept is.
He's only 20 now.
Yeah.
Like, the backroom's concept is, how old?
was he when...
16 when he started
16? Yeah.
A 16 year old kid did this?
Mm-hmm.
Wow, man.
Wow.
Like, that's all I have to say about that.
That, this guy is going to be huge.
He's going to be huge.
I hope that he continues getting opportunities and continues rising.
Because he's still a baby.
Yeah.
he's still a baby
hey he can't even drink
right
legally legally yeah
I mean I'm sure he's been
taken advantage of by a million Hollywood
but you think
hopefully not Philip
hopefully not do you guys think
I think that's the way it goes
do you guys think the future of horror
is these content creators
could be
to an extent right maybe
the Philipoo brothers
who did talk to me, bring her back.
Curry Barker who just did obsession,
Kayne Parsons, who did the backrooms,
and there's somebody else,
that Markiplier guy that did Iron Lung.
So at least you get a much bigger sample size that way, right?
Because it's like us doing our little podcast here.
Like anybody can be, you know, can do their own content now, right?
Like literally anybody.
even if you don't, I mean, you don't have to be super rich.
You don't have to do all that stuff Philip was talking about, like all the couch interviews and stuff.
Everybody's got a podcast.
Look at us.
Yeah.
We're living proof.
Anybody can do it.
So you'll have a bigger sample size.
So yeah, it might make sense.
I mean, there's a lot out there to have to wade through, right?
But it would make sense the cream that rises to the top would have never had that opportunity, right, had we not started going this way.
So maybe you will start seeing a lot more, you know, truly original, you know, really immersive, like, you know, super expansive stuff like this, right?
With so much potential.
I mean, it at least is something that's, it's new and exciting.
Right.
You know, I think that that's, it's not Halloween part 28 and a half.
That's a big portion of, you know, why the Mandalorian movie bombed big time.
And these, you know, YouTube creator original stuff are really taking off because, like, people are sick of the slot.
That's good.
That's really fucking positive, right?
So, yeah.
It's a good thing.
I think it's definitely a good thing.
And I'm excited about this kid.
I think it's a cool idea.
I like this alternate dimensions thing that keeps happening.
Right.
Sometimes I wonder if it's a coincidence that it's happening all at once.
But is it?
Or is it just being exposed?
I think it's just being exposed at the same time, Philip.
I think it's kind of always been there.
Maybe.
You know?
I like the concept.
I do too.
Yeah, I really fucking love the concept.
I mean, the fact that,
This guy's so young.
But then again, think about it.
A lot of the superstars in the 60s and 70s guys,
like Led Zeppelin, right, when they broke out,
and they're writing songs with lyrics like,
these guys must have so much fucking wisdom.
Like they know all the secrets of the universe.
They were in their fucking teens.
When they got started, Pink Floyd, same thing.
You know, there's just, there's this cosmic unconsciousness, right?
And if you're able to tap into it,
like this kid obviously has.
You open all kinds of doors.
It's going to be part of my talking point
about the new backroom's movie.
Yeah?
We'll get there.
Okay.
Yeah.
We're going to get into consciousness and weird shit today.
I think this is all super exciting.
Yeah.
It is.
We're not talking about the new one yet.
I wish he'd gone in a different direction
than he did in the new movie,
but we'll get there.
But as far as this,
like these short films,
I mean, this is really kind of cool.
And I sort of got that VHS vibe, right?
And that actually, I think that lended.
The kid was smart.
Okay, think about it.
The furry, grainy looks, right?
And then overlaying it with making it look like it's from an old VHS.
That kind of gives you that.
You can't quite see the details.
The time of this guy recording this in the first episode is 1990.
Yeah.
Makes sense.
Yeah. Makes sense. That definitely tracks. And it kind of looks like 1990. It feels like in 1990.
But it also probably makes it a whole lot easier to like computer generate a bunch of weird-ass rooms and not make it look insane.
Yeah, like I say, the only thing that where I was catching it, Brian, was like some of the shadows.
Like when you could see the guy moving, carrying the camera around. And then on the wall in front of him, obviously he throws a shadow, right?
and I noticed sometimes the shadow would be like a little bit off or something like that or not quite a human outline.
But to Phillips point earlier, like as far as the actual like wallpaper, carpet, rooms, tiles in the ceilings, pieces of furniture, I was fooled.
I mean, this looked real.
I'm a little bit surprised to learn that it was almost all CGI.
Were the guys in the hazmat suits, Brian, were they CGI?
I don't think so.
I don't think so.
Okay.
I think a lot of it was just
background stuff.
A lot of background stuff, yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, it would be easy to just slap a...
Just kind of say, this is just kind of boring, right?
It's like, it speaks to the video game generation
that's used to exploring all these rooms in a game
and drinking Mountain Dew and staying up until, you know,
4.30 a.m.
Getting, exploring rooms and da-da-da-da-da-da.
And you could just kind of slap that sticker on it, right?
And say it's just for that crowd.
And, you know, boomers aren't going to like it.
Older people aren't going to like it.
People, you know, anybody born after the late 90s won't dig this.
But I think that's kind of unfair and kind of insulting to say that because there's a lot here.
Get this.
I'm reading the synopsis for the first episode.
It was 1991 when he phased into the ground, into the backrooms.
but when he phased out and fell through the sky, it was 1996.
Okay, so there's time travel also, Philip.
Hmm.
I like it.
It's pretty cool, man.
I've been thinking a really stupid amount about a lot of this stuff lately.
Yeah?
Oh, yeah.
Coincidence?
Maybe.
I don't know.
I think it has something to do with the UFO stuff and religion.
and all that. I think it's all connected.
And I think a lot more of it is real than we think.
Yeah, well, I mean...
Parsons real.
Or is it came...
Or is he cane pixels in another universe, Brian?
Well, that just sounds like a porn name.
I think he probably used that nickname because he's like a animator, right?
Pixels. Get it?
Yeah, to pixelate his private...
Right.
That's right.
Gotcha.
Yeah, this was impressive, man.
You really pulled it off.
I like the 45-minute episode, right?
Because I think it was found footage three
because you actually had a lot of story going on.
But it was kind of neat.
And there were callbacks in the movie, too,
which we'll talk about later.
But like that where it looks like you're in a street,
but then you look up and it stars,
but it's very obvious, it's just flat.
And like you look out a window
and you're looking at a Japanese skyline, right?
with stars above it.
So it's like,
oh,
he's looking out
of an actual window.
But the sky is,
I think he purposely
made it super flat.
Like it just looks like
painted on stars type thing.
Kind of like the Truman Show effect,
you know?
And I thought that was kind of neat
the way they did that.
Yeah.
A lot of great effects.
Did you know,
all right,
here we go.
I'm going to go.
All right.
Did you know that there's like
a DMT experiment
that they've done
where like,
if you should,
shine a, like a laser level on a wall.
Like you can see a code in the wall.
And like multiple people have seen the same code.
Oh, you're on DMT?
While they're on DMT, yes.
So,
uh, big grain of salt.
I'm just saying multiple people have seen the same thing.
That's fun.
Like at the same time.
For that, I need an ocean of salt.
I know, dude.
But like, I actually at different times have seen the same code, I believe.
Like a numerical code or?
Like a weird code with like kanji symbols and...
Huh.
What about when they come down?
Like the Matrix.
Do they still see this?
That's a good question.
No, you can't see it unless you're on DMT.
Oh.
But multiple people on DMT have seen the same thing.
Same exact thing, huh?
And described it.
Kind of like, but how do you describe a dog to someone who's never seen one and ask him to draw it?
There it is.
Okay.
I don't know, man.
Weird stuff.
Weird stuff.
Anyway, aside from that, maybe we're in a simulation.
They saw the codes of the Matrix, which I think is part of this whole backrooms thing, which may be a part of the whole religion thing.
Yeah, makes sense.
And aliens.
I'm telling you, dude, it's all connected.
Yeah, or it could be multiple parallel universes, you know,
that are all existing on top of each other at the same time,
because there is no time.
It's kind of all.
Same thing, yes.
Steven Spielberg is going to let us down for what I'm hearing.
I know.
Really?
And Pedro said that.
Let us down.
In the chat, he's like, yeah, I think it's just a movie.
Because, like, there's been a lot of screenings
and there's no buzz about it.
Oh, okay, I see what you're talking about.
So we'll see.
Well, you never know.
Disapporting.
Again, like it always is.
Same shit.
Independence Day, part due.
But the backrooms, I think, as a concept
and as a movie that was created by a 16-year-old
is pretty incredible
and for that alone
I'm going to give him a 10
like holy shit
is it an actual 10
probably not but given his
age and what he did here
it's pretty
impressive
you know what I won't give him a 10
but I'm right there with you
with the creativity at that age
and what he's able to
accomplish up to this point
we'll get to the movie
are given 9.5.
Jesus Christ.
Damn.
This guy's going to be the LeBron
of horror movies.
Lopping and crying.
No.
Right, exactly.
Sorry,
LeBron, sorry.
You stole the words right out of my mouth.
I know.
I hated saying that
because I'm such a LeBron hater.
Aren't we all?
I don't hate him.
Yeah.
Don't hate the player,
hate the game, huh?
He's absolutely no, Michael.
Jordan, though, get out of here.
There's no Michael.
Right.
But at the end of the day, numbers don't
lie.
Well, true.
But they do cry.
I'm in Tom Brady.
Oh, man.
All right, Lance.
I'll go eight.
I'll go eight.
It was, um, I don't know.
It's kind of hard.
It's really hard to judge a series of YouTube videos, you know?
I mean, it's,
it's tough to say, but I,
I think eight is like super
fair, you know? It's not
a film. Hey, maybe I'll get
the film a higher mark, right? Because he actually
gets a chance to make a two-hour
movie. Maybe I'll give it higher marks.
But for now, I'm going with
eight and I will say I'm just
kind of blown away by
what this kid has done with the mythos.
And I hope a lot of
filmmakers take this and do
different types of things with it.
You know, like in the same
world. I will say this,
one thing about the other series you talked about Brian, the one where he finds the mall.
What was that called again?
The oldest view.
Yeah, the oldest view.
I will say this.
I was more impressed with the fact, and to me, it creeped me out more, that a kid's out walking in the woods and looks down, you've got to really look for it.
But you see like a little hole in the ground, right?
And everything goes into that.
I was more impressed with that for creep factor than dissolving through a flat wall.
That that's just me.
Oh, you got to keep watching
Because it gets weird
Cool
Yeah, I'm gonna keep watching man
I'm a fan
I'm officially a fan
All right
Let's move on to the brand new one
Backrooms from 2026
After a therapist patient
disappears into a dimension
Beyond reality
She must venture into the unknown
To save him
Director is Kane Parsons.
Writers, Kane Parsons with Will Sudec.
Well, there it is.
Also known for episodes.
So let that name.
Oh, and real quick, Mark Duplas, who is in the movie.
Yeah.
He put the rumors to bed because I guess they were saying
Kane Parsons didn't direct this movie by himself.
I think a lot of people
were saying because of his age and
in experience, but he
Mark Duplas said it was all him.
Okay.
Well, I mean, I'm sure
he had some guidance, but like
still, you know,
I mean, yeah,
that's big time.
Yeah.
Anyway, Will Sue Dick.
It's also known for Ashes,
episodes of Ash versus
the Evil Dead and Westworld.
824 discovered Kane Parsons online and loved the idea of his backroom's creation.
They pitched the movie to him a while back, and it was put on hold because of the Hollywood strike.
It was later revived with Parsons to set to write and direct the film.
Oh, yeah, look, that's part of the thing here.
Mark Duplas said he defended Kane Parsons from online rumors that he did not actually direct it.
And Duplas replied to a rumor,
hmm, with all due respect, I don't remember seeing you on set.
When I was there, Kane was 100% in control more so than many directors three times his age.
Mark Dupluss said, fuck you.
Well, in all fairness, Mark Dupluss was in the movie.
about two minutes.
Maybe.
Yeah, I know.
I think Mark
Duplas worked really well in creep
because he sort of seems like a creepy dude
but I think in real life he's a really good
person.
So he's saying there's a possibly
possibility that he was creeping around
backstage.
Man, I think he was.
Creeping enough to know that Kane was
directing it. He was always
in the shadows right behind him.
That's right. With his
with his werewolf mask, right?
He might have been.
He's probably a creepy son of a bitch,
but he seems like an honest dude.
Yeah.
You guys seen the time travel movie that he was in?
Safety not guaranteed.
Yeah, that's a good one.
That's a really good one.
You seen it, Philip?
Did I see that one?
I don't know if I saw that one.
Yeah.
What's her name?
I can't remember who else was in it,
because for me he stole the show,
but he puts an ad in the newspaper
says wanted someone to time travel with me.
Oh.
I'm building a time machine.
Yeah.
That sounds exciting.
It's pretty cool.
It's a cool little indie movie.
Okay.
And he does a lot of comedy.
He'll pop up in this.
He'll pop up in that.
You know, he's had recurring roles on several TV shows.
I watched one with my wife, with Meredith Gray on there.
It was a family, and it was sort of like the orphan.
He shows up a lot.
Yeah.
And it was a pretty good show.
It was like an American family or something and shit like that.
Something along those lines.
But it was like the movie The Orphan, you know, with like the older girl that's like the bad girl that's pretending to be younger than she actually is.
Aubrey Plaza.
That's who was in.
That's right.
I should have remembered that.
I kind of got a crush on her.
Aubrey Plaza is fantastic.
Look at her.
Picture her.
my head, but I couldn't get the name.
Okay. All right.
Brian,
would you think about the new backrooms movie?
I thought it was fantastic.
Yeah, a little different from the series.
Yeah.
But I think that's okay.
I think we can grow the mythology.
But a lot of the same, too.
Yeah.
Yeah, a lot of callbacks.
Right.
I thought the cast was great.
Chewy or 12, Edu, O'D, 4,
or probably mispronounce his name.
I thought he was really good in it.
I love that, dude.
He's one of my favorite actors.
And I'm glad to see.
He still knows how to put on a chokehold
because he was in this MMA movie called Red Belt.
Right.
I was.
Pretty good form.
Mm-hmm.
Great supporting cast with Renette Revise,
reviews or whatever her name is.
Mm-hmm.
And I just love this whole world,
got into because we got a little bit more
I'm not saying questions
answered
but more questions asked
and I kind of like that
okay
because I didn't want to go in
by the end of the movie like oh this explains
this and this explains that
I still want to be agreed
a whole bunch of explaining
yeah I kind of wanted to still be
questioning things by the end of the movie
right it would have been cool to have a
little bit of an answer though.
Yeah.
Well, maybe there was a little bit.
I mean...
But this movie was very
creepy.
I can tell that would get on
my nerves, that constant humming of
the fluorescent lights that you heard in there.
That's part of the special
hell of being there, right?
The liminal spaces.
We kind of brought it up before
the misremembered
versions of things
right
that didn't quite look right
and we'll get to some of the
things that were in the backrooms
and spoilers but yeah
I thought it was fantastic
especially for his first time directing a feature
link movie
I thought he knocked it out the park
and like I said before
in news this was
824 as high as
grossing opening weekend I think
and made over 81 million and it's already crossed 100 million off a 10 million dollar budget
see but i think they they got a lot of like the five-night-it's freddie's audience you think
that are not going to get it well i think people are going back to the theater because
they want original content they want to like original horror is in right now because obsession
and crossed a $100 million mark.
And that was made.
The Curry Barker made that off of $750,000.
So that's a big return for that company.
Yeah, no doubt.
That's good.
But yeah, backrooms, I loved it.
All right.
Nez, you with us?
Hold on a second.
There he is.
He's there.
Lance, you want to go?
Yeah.
I'll just say, I'll make it kind of quick, probably.
I was a little bit disappointed with this because of the direction it went.
I wanted it to go in a different direction.
I wanted it to focus on elements, different elements of the backrooms than it did.
But that was a directorial choice, you know, no big deal.
I mean, this kid's making movies, I'm not.
So I don't get to dictate exactly what I want my backroom's movie to be.
Or maybe I do.
Maybe I can enter it into AI and it'll spit out the perfect,
movie for me that I wanted, but
I would have liked
a little bit more focus on some of the side
characters. I would have liked maybe
even more callbacks to the
web series. You definitely got a few
good ones and a few Easter eggs, but I
would have liked a few more.
And I don't know.
I was just, I was wanting
it to go a little bit different direction. I was
expecting it to go in a little different direction.
I didn't get that.
Does that make it a bad movie? Yeah, not
really. Just
for me, I was disappointed.
It just didn't live up to kind of what I was
expecting. It wasn't my back
rooms that I was imagining from watching the
web series. And I think that kind of
speaks to the, I think
that speaks to how far different
filmmakers can kind of go in this playground,
right? Because there's so
much you can do here. There's so many different
stories, different types of
things you can focus on and, you know.
But not
one of my favorite films of the year, probably.
But, yeah,
Not bad. I just like the web series a lot better.
All right.
Okay.
I got to do this quick.
I'm having dinner with my folks and everything.
Everybody came to town.
So my niece, she graduates on Friday.
So, you know, I had to get somewhere where there was,
well, we can't hear music because I don't want us to get tagged on something.
But really quick, really quick.
Obsession 10.
That movie was hell of good.
Oh, that's all that before I saw backrooms.
I watched some of the web series, and it was okay.
I mean, for what it was, I had no idea what it was.
My grandsons had to tell me because they were watching something.
I was like, what is this?
And they're like, the backrooms.
I said, what is it?
And they didn't know.
They were eight and five years old, but they knew about it.
They saw the trailer and they go, I want to see that.
And I was like, I don't know.
But I think they would be bored.
because with all the talking and everything, they'd probably lose interest.
So I'll just wait until the streams and let them check it out.
I didn't think it was that bad.
But they would totally be bored.
As far as the movie itself, I knew just a little of the lore.
I didn't know a lot to it.
So I wasn't expecting much.
I was like, okay, let me just see what they can do with a big budget.
But I can never pronounce that actor's name.
He's good and everything.
I liked him in Dr. Strange and all that.
Chewere-a-tel Edgwaphore.
Yeah, him.
But I liked what was happening.
I thought it was really good.
Serenity.
I felt that what he was going through as well as the psychiatrist, what she was going through as well.
And that's what helped or tied them into what was going on for each of them.
I wish they kind of showed a little more of the two little helpers,
the workers at the furniture store.
It's like, we introduced them, we see them, and then boom.
Yeah, and then they're gone.
Yeah, so, but they were just red shirts.
Yeah, pretty much.
But as far, what I was really paying attention to was the score, which I loved.
Speaking of score, the score and obsession was awesome.
Anyway, um,
and paying attention to the set, the settings.
I really loved it.
Wherever they built this,
it had to have been a big huge hangar or something
or different areas that they built all this,
this backroom's world.
I really thought that was sweet.
But as far as the movie,
I want to see it again because I left the theater like,
what?
I had to go watch some other videos for people to explain it.
And I'm like, ah, okay.
I said, let me go see this again.
Right.
But as far as the whole thing, I enjoyed it for not knowing much.
I just, what I knew about it was the little I seen that my grandsons were watching, the little bit I read up on.
I didn't want to read up too much because I had a feeling that what was shown in the web series wasn't going to really tie that much into the movie because it was a total different situation.
I did like in the web series
how it started,
how they were just filming some movie
and then boom,
they drop into the back room.
They're like,
what the hell?
What's going on?
But the whole movie itself,
I really enjoyed it.
I just,
it felt eerie.
The parts that were supposed to be creepy,
were creepy.
I jumped once,
but it was mainly because
it was a packed theater.
Yeah, same here.
And I was like,
oh, man,
I just saw these teenagers.
strangers in there and I was like man just I just hope they shut up shout out to the dudes that were sitting behind me I was ready to turn around and tell them to shut up but they were talking about the lore so I was kind of leaning back and listening I had two kids doing that to what they were saying that was the thing I was talking about when they're calling it the the chicken jockey effect because I guess all the older people in the crowd were getting tired of all the younger people talking how loud about all the
mythos and the lore.
Yeah.
That's called the chicken jockey effect.
Yeah.
I love it.
But I appreciate it.
What the fuck is that?
It made me think a little more.
Because my son, he knew it.
My youngest son, he knew it all.
And I didn't want to keep leaning over.
Because he was kind of like, he was kind of going, okay, this is that.
And da-da-da-da.
And I'm like, all right.
But in the end, the whole movie, I enjoyed it.
I thought it was really.
again. Will it make my best of?
I don't know. Maybe an honorable mention.
But I did, I really did enjoy it.
Will I pick it up in the still book?
Of course I am.
But I want to see
it again. I want to experience it one more
time in the theater before I sit and watch
it at home. Because
I really enjoyed what
was going on as far as visually
what we were seeing on the screen.
What's around
every corner? What's in this hole?
Where is this leading to? Why is
why are the chairs only sticking out halfway?
Why was it changing every time he would go in and out?
It was never the same thing.
So I was like, oh, okay, I get it.
It's one that makes you think.
Yeah, because at the end, I left the theater like, wait, what?
And there were some guys trying to explain it to me, and I'm like, okay, and then I had to watch more videos and everything.
But overall, I did enjoy the movie.
I thought it was one of the better A-24 films.
And yeah, I really enjoyed the movie.
I thought it was awesome.
Okay.
Lance, what do you think?
Yeah, you know, like I said, man, I was,
I wanted him to go in a different direction,
but I was impressed with it.
It's good, good filmmaking,
and I think this kid has a future.
Okay.
Ratings.
Yeah, like, Nez, you want to go ahead
and give your rating?
Yeah, I know you got to get it.
I'm going to give it a 8.5.
I'll give it that.
That's good.
Because, I mean, I probably would be giving it a 9, but I was, like I said, I left the theater confused.
So, yeah, they're going to get my money again because I'm going to go back and see it.
But, yeah, I'm going to give it an 8.5.
And once more, obsession, 10, hell of good.
Definitely a top-tier movie of the year.
Yeah, agreed.
That soundtrack was fire, too.
and everything. But,
Bri, we'll do the rest.
I just, things were happening.
And yeah, but those of you that do know,
my daughter passed,
and I'm kind of dealing with that right now.
So, but everyone that reached out to me,
you guys rule, I love you all.
Thank you so much, as well as my brothers here.
Brother Phil, brother Lance, brother Brian. I love all three you guys.
And I'll see you guys all next time.
So until then, be safe out there.
on all right man thanks all right brother be good damn that's us uh anyway
Lance uh let's see Brian what do you think your score is give it a nine
damn wow it wasn't exactly like the the series but I like that because I don't
think anything in the back rooms is supposed to be like anything before it like he said
when you go in
and...
Fair enough, yeah.
It's going to be different.
Yeah.
Makes sense.
That makes perfect sense, man.
And I thought everybody that was in the cast
did what they were supposed to.
Mm-hmm.
And it ended,
when it ended,
I can see people be like,
what the fuck?
But I kind of like,
yep, that's what I expected.
Yeah.
Well, in all fairness, Brian,
both this movie,
a few times and in all the web series
the person who's holding the camera
does say what the fuck a lot
right?
Yeah.
So nine out of ten.
Damn.
Man, I gotta go seven.
It was a good film,
but again, I liked
the web series better.
We'll get into it later,
you know, when we talk about spoilers here,
but it's a seven.
It's solid for me.
I'm going to go, I think eight.
I think Edgewood 4 gave a fantastic performance, as he always does.
He's one of my favorites.
Haunted guy, right?
A very haunted guy.
Fucking, he shows up to work, man.
Yeah.
That guy is a great actor.
I love him.
I'm not sure what they really did with that whole final act in the thing.
I think that seemed.
I mean, it was fun.
But that was, I think that was the part that confused me the most
because it was a totally different person
that was a part of this story.
It really hadn't been much of a part of the story before.
Right.
It seemed like an afterthought.
Hmm. Okay.
Although having said that, it was a movie that made me think.
I have a whole lot of different.
Yeah, that's a fair statement.
Theories about what's happening here.
And they're all pretty interesting.
I'm going to go seven and a half.
Hmm.
Okay.
I think.
Spoilers.
This is a motherfucking spoiler alert.
You've been fucking warned.
This is a motherfucking spoiler alert.
You've been fucking warned.
This is a motherfucking spoiler alert.
You've been fucking warned.
Yeah.
Spoilers.
Yeah.
I wish it had been bigger in scale.
I wanted to see like the has math math.
suit people and all that.
Not just a little personal story about these two people,
but that's it.
I'll get it off my chest.
What did you guys think?
Well,
I was fine with not really seeing that because we got that in the web series.
And I kind of disagree with Nez.
I think the web series and the movie are connected.
Oh, yeah.
This sort of seems after the web series, right,
where they have the camera set up and then that like these people are from the
web series.
It's like the same company.
They're already in there.
Yeah.
That's crazy.
They made MRI machines, and now they're investigating the backrooms.
Because I think they accidentally opened a fucking...
That's what I was thinking, too.
I thought for sure he was going to say, yeah, we accidentally opened a portal.
I think they accidentally opened a portal.
I think that maybe these portals exist already.
I think maybe that's what Skin Walker Ranch is.
Some sort of portal.
to another dimension.
Look at the large halgeron
Collider, right?
That could easily open the portal.
Well, I'm reading here
in the beginning
when it shows that it's a scientist
that gets attacked
in the background,
that's in 1990.
Okay, okay.
That's right.
It was time stamped on the VHS tape, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, and, you know,
with costumes,
specific and
you know it was like their reasoning
for having the shitty quality video
which I think totally works
here. I do too.
Yeah but I like I like I
I like that it was shitty quality video
even on the big screen.
Right.
Like it just gave it like a weird
uneasy feel. You know it's that
uncanny Valley thing right? Like
where it's like
it almost looks like somewhere
you've been before but it's not and it's
weird.
What is it
like, oh, go ahead.
Is it just a dimension
between behind reality?
Yeah, or
is it shaped by the trauma of who
is in it at that particular time,
right? It could be
because I was going to bring up
the people that are in there.
Yes. Right.
The actual
original people, they're
copies of copies
of copies of copies. Yeah, not
even
fully
remember how they actually
looked, they're all distorted and
Right. So the fat guy that
he was eating, right? Yeah.
Is that just a dude out of
What's his name's mine?
Like that...
Or was he left behind? Or is he a shadow
reflection or an echo of what was
Something that has been there? Or is it
somebody that he saw at a grocery store one day?
I felt like the
people were people that were
there.
Yeah, I did too.
But the other lady was his wife, right?
Was it?
I think the red-haired lady that he
scoped, I think that was his wife.
Oh, because he said here, yeah, that's right,
because they showed a picture of her earlier.
And it was a red-haired. Which makes me think this
whole thing is part of a creation of his mind.
Oh, see, I like it even a little less now.
Why?
Okay.
because I was hoping that it was echoes of other people that had been in the back rooms.
That's the backrooms.
That's all the other stuff in there.
Because we get hers at the end when she's running from the giant pirate version of him.
She runs into that neighborhood that the two assistants lived in.
Okay.
Yeah, that's right, because it had the missing signs up.
which I also want to bring up the actual real world in this
was also kind of disturbing and kind of creepy
everything was kind of small and
brightly colored and
so it wasn't really
quote to quote reality to begin with like Earth Prime
type thing right we're all in alternate universes
and we're in one now
I love the scene where she was running and she thought she was about to get out
but there was that brick wall at the entrance to the
to the store
Sorry, Philip.
Yeah.
No, yeah, you're right.
And well, because everything was backwards when she was running through it.
It was always just a little bit off.
Yes.
So, pretty clever stuff.
I could be wrong, but I think in a lot of the Gnostic texts, the idea is that we're all of part of one consciousness.
That is creating all of us and this world.
Oh, yeah.
And we're all just little pieces of the same thing.
But the world is fake.
Yeah, makes perfect sense.
And so maybe this is that alternate dimension
where it's sort of a part of the consciousness of everybody.
But I don't know why the only people in it are part of his consciousness.
In that little corner of it, maybe.
Maybe.
I kind of lean towards those.
I don't know.
I kind of don't think.
that was his wife.
Okay.
It could be either way, right?
But why didn't he scalp her and put her hair on the...
Oh, maybe he thought it was because of the red hair.
Yeah.
Maybe his brain thought that was his wife.
And he said that he kept calling her a fat pig.
That chick was skinny as hell.
Yeah.
So, and let me say...
Misremembering, Philip.
His performance is doing the role.
play.
Yes.
Both times.
Right.
Because both times you got a different performance out of him when he did it in her office and then in the room.
That's right.
Yeah.
Well, and it was when he like the big weird pirate version of him came in.
And he was like, it's okay.
It's a part of our wiring.
And that's when the pirate version sort of took over.
like the monster took over.
So he decided it was okay to be a monster.
Because you can tell they interacted before.
Right.
Because when he came in the room, he was like, why are you in here?
Yeah.
Apparently he could be eaten also like the other people, huh?
But maybe that was the only version of him left now was the monster
because he decided he wanted to stay in the back rooms in the dream world.
Yeah, could be.
I don't know, man.
it was weird. It made me think about a lot of stuff.
Oh, yeah.
Was it too much?
Like, I like the ones that make you think about stuff, but I sort of want some.
But have an enclosed story with actual answers, yeah.
Yeah, like I need some sort of borders.
I got you.
To the insanity.
Yeah.
Well, he is, they are developing a second one, and he said the web series is going to
continue. Oh, there'll be
tons more, I'm sure.
Like I say, it's a great little playground, right?
For different filmmakers to
do their own stories and stuff.
All right. Is that it for tonight, guys?
Yeah, we
could keep going and gone and get
lost in the background.
Okay.
Why, it'll get me talking under religion and stuff.
All right.
As I have any idea
what's going on anymore than anybody else.
But as always, we want to thank you guys for listening to another
another episode of The Horror Returns.
We'd love to hear your feedback and ideas.
You can reach us at The Horror Returns at gmail.com
or just go to thehorrorreturns.com.
Next week, it is going to be comedy week.
Pedro's going to stop by and we're going to do the new scary movie.
May be great, may not be great.
We'll see.
And also, I did just rewatch white chicks.
one of the best movies of all time.
Yeah.
Fucking awesome. Terry Cruz.
And we got to support scary movie
because they said
scary movies of success
and White Chicks 2 is happening.
Okay.
I'll buy two tickets then.
We're also going to see one
called Shriek if you know what I did
last Friday of the 13th.
That's a long title.
Noe.
So.
I'll drink him and juice in the hood.
All right, Brian.
Until the
Horror returns again.
Good night.
