Hey, listen, we're riding for one of these shops around town, yeah?
Banking shop.
You're going to have off days.
You have an off day writing for this shop?
It's treason.
Yeah, you got to approach every day like it's your last.
Welcome back, everybody, to a brand new episode of THR Present Stream Feans.
I'm your host, Brian.
With me, as always, is my brother, Nez.
What's up, man?
Yo, what is up, everyone?
I'm still recovering from San Diego Comic-Con international.
2026. It felt like it was like what almost two weeks ago. Yeah. And I'm dragging still. I'm just like maybe it's just this heat here in Northern California. But man, was it the same amount of people? Pretty much. Was it more?
Um, there was, I mean, it was sold out. So you assume it's just the same million people that are there, plus everyone outside. But this year is,
panels are just like hall age other than the doomsday one and space balls too it wasn't even
that i'm thinking about and there was nothing really huge my apple had uh showcased whatever
they got coming and i think amazon did something yeah none of the the big studios did anything
I mean, the biggest one was the Marvel one with Doomsday and all that and the announcement of, what's his face?
Andy from Romulus is going to be the next Black Panther.
Which I'm cool with that.
Yeah.
I tried watching Wakanda forever again and I just, nothing against Shiri, but it's just, no, I just wasn't.
I guarantee when we get to Black Panther 3, there's going to be a time jump.
There has to be because they said Secret Wars is going to essentially reboot the franchise.
Well, it has to.
Did you see Spider-Man yet?
Yeah.
If you guys haven't seen it yet, fast forward a couple of minutes.
All right.
Five, four, three, two, one.
I figured that, yeah, they were going to do something like that
because Gene Gray is a teenager.
I don't know.
20, maybe.
Yeah, because it's four or five years since the last Spider-Man.
So they would be in their early 20s.
Yeah, so I'm just like, okay.
And then I was pissed.
pissed at
how old is this chick
she's 24
yeah she's 24
so
okay I guess
jean is 24 maybe 23 when they filmed
this probably would
I mean nothing against her
I thought she had a good she was a good character
and I was shocked I didn't know
it was going that route I was really
trying to stay away from everything
yeah shoot this was a dark version of her yeah
so I was just really just kind of staying away from all of
whatever they were gonna do in it
the movie was good I did enjoy it I did like the
little montage they had with some of the the bad guys
like the lower level yeah and they based it off of all these
classic amazing spider-man covers uh the one with tombstone when he was holding holding a spider-man
off uh over the off of a thing a metal beam or something up high yeah shout out to crondon
west coast rapper played tombstone yeah and um tarantula is that his name they show him really
quick yeah but the thing that piss me off the most was scorpion the the the
Those you listen to East Side, those you know me on personal level,
everyone knows my favorite villain in the Spider-Man universe is Scorpion.
And they, we see him in the trailer.
So I was like, fuck yeah.
I just assumed he was going to be the main bad guy through this whole thing.
He was the only in it for not even five minutes.
But I feel like they're just introducing these characters
that are going to make up the Sinister Six.
I know, but I was just like, man, when we first find out that nacho is going to be Scorpion, what was his name, Michael Mando?
Yeah.
From Better Call Saul.
I was like, all right, because we find that out in the first Spider-Man, Homecoming.
At the end of that when he's talking a vulture in prison.
Or then we see him on that boat, too, when they were trying to buy some.
kind of high-tech stuff.
And then you got the scorpion tattoo on his neck.
Yeah, so I was like, oh, hell yeah.
But then we had two other movies.
No Scorpion.
We had Mysterio and all the old villains that came back and No Way Home.
And then I'm like, all right, good.
The first trailer, first little teaser comes out, or one of the first or second, I can't remember.
We see Scorpion, and I'm like, hell yeah.
And then we see him in action.
in the movie, I'm like, sweet.
You couldn't slap a helmet or something on him?
Mask?
I was like, oh.
I liked how he looked, though.
I liked this little scorpion tail, high-tech.
Yeah, like he was controlling it with his arm.
Yeah.
I thought that was cool, but I was just like, oh, man.
I just...
I think they're just saving him, because at least they didn't kill him.
Yeah.
Because that scene where...
Peter almost went full of spider with his mutation and he was about to kill him.
So, I mean, it was a good movie, everyone.
I mean, stay at the very end of the credits.
There's only one credit scene if you haven't seen it or you don't know.
But, I mean, other than that, everybody else that was in, it was cool.
Did it had no idea if Florence Pug was going to pop up in it.
So that actually got spoiled to me.
I didn't not know any of that.
I didn't even know the whole drink.
gray thing. I knew that said he was
in it, but I just figured
she was going to be some
some little random teenager or something
and
I was like, oh, okay, cool,
right on, but then I was like, wait,
in this universe,
the X men
are still kids, or I don't
know. I mean, this isn't
the
this isn't the earth that
Peter was in, because if you guys remember
at the end of No Way Home, they
Dr. Strange did that thing and basically wiped everybody's mind
and so nobody knows who's, or nobody knows
Spider-Man is Peter Parker.
One person knew.
That was the Hulk.
He did?
When he was Savage Hulk.
He remembered?
Yeah, remember when he was about to like crush his head?
Oh.
And he said, I'm your, it's me, Peter, your friend.
Yeah, all right.
That spelled didn't work for,
the Hulk
I'm glad we didn't have
Smart Hulk or whatever
because I did not like that
They tried for a second
Yeah but
I hated that
It just
I'm like
What the hell is this
What was that?
Endgame?
Yeah
Yeah I was like
I didn't
Nothing against Mark Ruffel
He's a good actor
But I was just
I did not like no smart Hulk
when it just turned into just full-on rage
Hulk, I was in.
But he's only in a minimal.
But, yeah, I think those are the only,
my main gripe was Scorpion.
I was, I was pissed off at all that.
I was like, man, but I see what we're setting up for.
From what I'm understanding,
Spider-Man's not even going to be in Doomsday.
I'm going to call it.
he's going to be in the end credit scene.
He would have to.
Because they said he's going to be in Secret Wars, definitely.
I figured it would be like how Infinity War was.
Everyone disappears.
But, I mean, I need to go and read Secret Wars 2015 because I know the 80s secret war.
That was a hashtag my Secret Wars.
But when I was a kid, so I assume we're not getting in any.
that but um i just i need to go read that whole story again because i i don't remember it at all
so we'll see but they they said they are basing it off that will it be exactly like that
probably not but they'll that's the the blueprint from what i understand i don't know i could be
wrong but i'm gonna get that book again and read it because i i know i have it
somewhere in my comics but i there's too many comic books i don't know i'm
I don't want to dig through it all.
I just kind of want the paper trade.
So I'll just get that one.
But I'm ready for it.
Dune's day, I was hyped.
I sucked.
I mean, there was no way we were getting in Hall-LH.
Because Friday night, they gave out the bracelets for Hall-Ach, but you still had to stand in line if you wanted to be close.
If you didn't care where you were, I mean, you could have just walk in with your bracelet on.
we did get into hall lights though after the doomsay panel because Kevin Smith
every Saturday night at Comic-Con he does his uh his little spiel of comedy and
storytelling so that's always a good time I mean that that you can just walk right in
so but oh give you some horror I went to the uh the neither living dead panel
um the original night of living dead pull my book out because they were
talking about Night of the Living Dead,
the official story of the film.
It's a book by Simon
Rod or Bound or whatever.
It's a hard
covered book and I got
to meet
what's her nuts?
Judith O'Day, I think that's her name.
She played Barbara.
So, I mean,
that was really cool. She was there.
Told a lot of stories about what went on on the set
and how everybody was cool with one
another and
talked about
Ben,
Duane
the Duane Jones
is that his name?
Yeah.
Talked about him
on how he was
such a cool guy
and everything.
So,
and I got my book
signed.
It was after the panel.
They said,
we're selling this book
down at
whoever,
whoever,
I guess
Image 10.
No,
Titan books.
They had a booth.
They said they're
down there.
So go down there.
And if you buy
a book,
she'd sign.
it for you. So I was like, hell yeah. So as soon as the panel was over, I hobbled down there as fast as I could.
And for those of you that didn't know, I had a broken toe, a fractured toe in two spots on my big toe. And I still went and just soldiered through it.
But damn, it hurt every day when we were done. But yeah, the panel, the Not Living Dead panel was really cool.
I mean, and meeting Judith O'Day, she was so nice.
It wasn't just like a, here, just sign your book and take a picture.
All right.
See you.
She sat there and would answer your questions and talk to you.
I must stood there for about, probably 20 minutes in line.
But when I got up to talk to her, I talked to her.
It was probably about seven or eight minutes.
I got to stand there and talk to her.
So it was really cool, man.
I did tell her.
I said, neither living dead is the movie that introduced me to horror.
It's the first horror movie I ever seen.
I said when I was little, she's like, dang, how old were you?
I said, I would say around four or five, she went, your parents let you watch that?
I was like, no, I'm my babysitter.
He asked me and my brother, you guys want to watch a scary movie?
And we went, yeah, and he put on creature features with Bob Wilkins as a host for those you to live in the bay.
For you, if you were old enough to remember that show.
And I said, yeah, I sat there and watched it.
And I was just, when it was over, I wanted more.
I said, I kind of didn't understand it at first, but once they're eating everyone,
I was like, what the hell is this?
I said, I just wanted more and more of that.
So she was like, wow, she goes, that's an awesome story.
Thank you for telling me that.
So, but yeah, she was so cool.
She's up there in age, but if you guys go to a horror con or whatever,
and she's there, definitely go up there and talk to her because she will just,
Let you know all your questions.
Because yeah, she answered questions during the panel.
And they did a, I guess they were filming it for something.
And they had all of us say, we're coming to get you, Barbara.
They're coming to get you, Barbara.
And it was like the whole room said it.
So that was really cool when they filmed that.
But, I mean, that was probably the highlight of my week in San Diego.
I mean, we had a blast at everything we were doing.
but to meet her and be at that panel.
I didn't even know that panel was happening.
Mike's the one that told me.
He was like, dude, you need to go Night of Living Dead panel.
I was, I don't want, wait, what?
So I had to look it up.
And I guess that's the first time they brought Night of Living Dead,
the original film, to Comic Con.
So it wasn't in a big room.
It was about medium size.
But it was cool.
I got there early enough and I was right in the front row.
So I had a blast going to that.
and oh also going to the
wwee
Mattel panel that was cool
usually with that
they talk about all their toys
all the figures that are coming
then they bring out the wrestlers
this time it was different
they brought all the wrestlers out right
at the beginning then they started
talking about what was coming
Danhausen was there
Lash Legend
AJ
C.M. Punk
and
I know I sent you all those pictures
Who else was there?
I think that was it.
Let me see, I got to go back and
Yeah, last legend,
Seampunk.
Oh, Ray Mysterio and Mr. Iguana
and Yesca, they were there.
You watch
SummerSlam yet?
Yeah.
We got some stuff to discuss.
Yeah.
wait for that episode everyone I mean my my complaints were the first day so but we'll we'll get into that
but yeah it was a cool to go to that um I kind of lucked out getting into that one I got there
as early as I could but the line was like down the hall I was someone oh man because I was like
well where's the end of this line and one of the guys went way back there and I was like uh
Because lately the room, I mean, every year the room has been getting bigger for this panel.
So I was like, okay.
So we got in there for some panel that was before it.
But, I mean, nobody even cared.
Everybody was in there for all the wrestling marks.
So we had to sit through whatever panel that was before it.
I don't even remember what it was.
I was just sitting there.
But anyway, before, I was like, oh, man, I want to stand way back there because I had a shit seat.
so right when I was standing kind of close to the front
one of the I guess ushers or whatever was like hey
are you guys he said something in abbreviation
some letters and the two guys that were standing next to me
went yeah we are so I wasn't sure I think it was one of those
I wouldn't say deaf people or something
because they sat in that front row where the sign
language guy was.
And then when that guy was like,
all of you right here? And I was standing
right next to him. And the dude in front of me, he didn't even turn
around. He just went, yeah. And so, okay,
you guys get in this line. You guys are going to go in first.
So I was just standing there.
And I didn't say anything. And he was like, yeah, man, come on.
Let's go. I was like, fuck yeah.
So I just went in. And I was like,
I rushed the front, but
they already got there. But I was in the third row.
But I still had a good seat.
I was right there. I wasn't like way in the back.
so but I didn't know what he what the whatever abbreviation he said but then he just said yeah man
come on you you're with them I went okay so I just I didn't say anything I just rolled right in
so I got up a third row and my buddy and his girlfriend were there he's a wrestling mark
a shout out to I am DJ thrills he he called me he was where are you are you in the panel I said
yeah I'm inside him in the third row hurry up I got two seats so they they finally came in and it was a blast
Dan Housin is hell of funny.
He just, it was just joke after joke after joke in one-liners.
That's all he was doing.
I know some people don't like him because they just hate him for, I guess, his comedy or whatever.
But I don't have an issue with him.
He's funny.
I like him in the ring and the mini-Housins and all that.
Oh, we're really getting into that one because I was excited when someone came out.
but oh yeah other than that i mean uh i went to some other panels but um i think neither the living
was probably the best one and then wwee but a lot of small press uh stuff and uh books book panels i went to
oh there was one i went to with the high i was waiting for the panel after it so i got in there
and there was this older lady and these two older guys they were talking about their history and comics
and when they were working, it was like way, way back in the day.
The lady was like, I wasn't even allowed to be in the same room
with all the male artists or anything.
They just wanted me in the back.
They wanted me to stay in the kitchen or stay in the mail room.
They said, and I can't remember what year she said.
She goes, that was the time where women couldn't do anything.
But she was talking about it.
I could draw circles around.
everyone that worked at whatever comic publishing,
uh,
she was working at.
And she goes, I was in the day where they go,
Hey, Tuts, go get me a couple coffee.
And I would have to get up and go get it for him.
I was like, wow.
So she goes, man, we've, we've come a long way.
And I'm glad those times were over with.
But I did.
She goes, I made it through that.
And here I am today.
I'm still doing artwork.
And she started just going off on all the,
the comics and everything.
think she is done. So, but I was like, wow, that was, it was an interesting story.
That was one of the panels I just went in because I was waiting for the next one and I thought
it was a good one. So, but you kind of forget all that until you hear it on how women were
treated way back in the day. So, but it was, we had a good time, spent way too much money,
but that's what I always do every year. But we had a blast.
So, but, all right, man. Enough of all.
all that. What are we doing?
We are here to talk about
2005's
Lords of Dogtown Sports
Drama.
Let's see, Google, what you got?
Lords of Dogtown
2005 is a
biographical drama directed by
Catherine Hardwick about
the Z-boys, a group of
teenage surfers from Venice, California
who revolutionized skateboarding
in the
1970s by adapting
their surfing style to
empty swimming pools during
a drought.
The film
based on a true story
follows the rise of skaters.
Tony Alba, Jay Adams, and Stacy
Peralta.
Their success
with the Zephyr's street
team and the
subsequent strain on
their friendships as the sport
became commercialized.
Okay.
That was a weird
CIM TV guys
Really quick
I'll read the one that I found on Google
A drought in the 1970s southern California
Has an unexpected side effect
As people emptied a swimming pool
As a group of teen surfers from the dog
From the dog town area of Venice Beach
Move in with skateboards
And a new sport is born
Based on a true story of this film
Follow Z-Boy's skate team member
Stacey Peralta Tony Aval and Jay Adams
Plus manager
Skip Inglam, I think that was his name,
and as a fearless pool surfing leaders
to fame, fortune, and misfortune.
The IMDV is much shorter.
The film follows the surfing, skateboarding trends
that originated in Venice, California,
during the 1970s.
Okay.
Director is Catherine Hardwick,
writer is Stacey Peralta,
this stars Heath Ledger,
E. M.
Hirsch, Victor
Russoot,
what else we got?
John Robinson,
Rebecca DeMorne,
William
Moffmer,
Julio Oscar,
Machoso,
Nikki Reed,
Michael and
Garanaro.
I'm butchering these names.
What's their name from
Superstore?
America Ferrer.
A bunch of other people.
Yeah.
Nez, what did you think?
Lords of Dogtown.
All right, really quick.
Before you guys,
for those of you that don't know,
this movie was based off of
the 2001 documentary
directed by Stacy Peralta,
Dogtown and Z-Boys.
They took a lot of the stories from this,
and then they just turned it into a movie.
but the Zephyr's surf team and surf shop down in Venice and Dogtown run by Skip Inglem and his band of crew started a skateboard team.
So that's pretty much where this came from.
If you guys have only seen the movie and you haven't seen the documentary, documentary goes into a lot more of this.
The movie, they just picked and chose what they needed.
They needed and turned it into a movie.
But the movie, I love this movie.
This movie's awesome.
I really loved it.
I liked that these guys, the actors had to learn how to skateboard.
I mean, they weren't doing all the, when they were riding the pools and everything.
But the majority of it was them on their boards.
Plus the other members of the Z team, a lot of them were professional skateboarders
because they wasn't just the main jay.
Adams, Tony Alva and
Stacey Peralta
and Sid.
Sid, that character
they
based it off a real character, a person, but he
wasn't a guy that was hanging out
with them.
It was just a kid that had cancer and he
had the cool swimming pool
that he emptied and let
them skate it. And they
kind of made him his role bigger
in the film.
So, but
um,
He's Ledger. He played, he did a really good job. Academy Award winner, Heath Ledger. He did a really good job at Skip Engel. I really loved him. From what I understand, he did study the real guy, Skip, talked to him, kind of learned how he was, his body movement was and how his speech was. He really sounded the way he was. Some people were like, what was matter with Heath Ledger? Do you have something in his mouth? But to talk that way, and they're like, that was what he came up with, hanging out with.
with um skip uh amyl hirsch i he's a good actor he's been in a ton of things i thought he did a
really good job as j adams uh victor rossack as tony alva um i've seen that kid in a bunch of other
things but yeah he was pretty good he portrayed uh tony good and john robinson he portrayed a
stacy peralta i thought he did a good job but out of those main three that they kind of
focus this story on. I thought
Emil Hirsch as Jay Adams.
He was an all-star of this
film.
Beautiful Nikki Reed. She was
Kathy Alva. It was Tony Alva's sister.
I did like her.
I met her once. It was during all
the twilight stuff at Comic-Con.
And she was
signing posters and just kind of walking
down the line for Hall H.
And everyone was like, oh my God,
I loved you. And I think that movie,
she wrote 13.
they were going off about that and some other thing
and she was kind of going
okay yeah yeah whatever and signing posters
but I said I loved you in Lord the Dogtown
she actually stopped and looked at me
and looked up at me and was like
oh thank you so much
a lot of people don't know I'm in that movie
I said I didn't know you were either
until you popped up on the screens
you were like oh thank you
so she was really cool if you guys ever get to meet her
but yeah this movie was awesome
I saw it in the theater
when it first came out and uh i had no idea they were making this movie
because i just knew the documentary i went to the
go see whatever and they showed a trailer for it i was like oh shit so it was really
cool but i loved what they did turning old southern california venice beach back to 90
or 70 style on how it looked i'll give it to all these skateboarders that were in it
uh the stunt performers and the real skaters
these guys had to learn how to ride those old 70 style skateboards it's not I mean I probably
could have two tick but it man I'm so used to how the boards are now I mean these are just
basically a little flat planks of wood uh until they started making plastic skateboards
I mean that's what I started on I started on a plastic one and I was so used to that but
when the boards got bigger i was like wow man these are awesome these are even better than what we had
but what these guys were on basically they were just rolling on pieces of plywood with uh clay wheels
this was uh they introduced the uh the the urethane wheel in this and everything but the boards
they were riding were so skinny uh wood then they went plastic and then they went back to wood and
everything but i thought this was a really good uh
small little history lesson of what went on there i'm sure they embellished some of it to give it the
the the drama factor but i i really liked what was happening i liked how the the actual real
real actors were were skating um but they all the hard tricks and everything and i know that
wasn't them so whoever they got to to do it um they matched them up perfectly on how they were looking
or who knows maybe they might have just added their faces to someone else but i thought this movie was
amazing i really loved it um i've watched this movie countless times but uh it was awesome film man
i just loved everything that was going on i loved the the story that was based off of a stacy
parrata's documentary um it was awesome i mean it was really good i mean i know it's sad to see
heath ledger because he's no longer with us but these roles
that he picks, man, they're just, they're awesome.
He picks, I mean, people didn't know, really know about this, this movie or didn't,
and a lot of people don't even know this story.
You can watch this.
I mean, even if you don't skateboard, you can still watch this film and get some of
enjoyment out of it.
And I loved all the cameos from the original Z-Boys team.
Tony Alvo was in it.
Stacey Peralta was in it.
Jay Adams was in it.
The real Skip Anglam, he was in it.
Red Dog, he was in it.
Then some of the new skaters, they had Tony Hawk.
He was in a Christian Osoy, Lance Mountain.
And I'm sure some other pro skateboarders did, doubled for the characters,
as well as some of the other side characters that were all, like,
there was a lot of skateboard contests in this.
So they had real skateboarders out, professional skateboarders out there.
They're doing it.
Of course we got Johnny Knoxville.
I mean, it was cool to see him pop up into this film.
But yeah, man, when was the first time you saw it?
I seen this in the theater when it originally came out.
I didn't know nothing about it, took a chance on it, loved it ever since.
I think the acting's phenomenal in it.
I loved the story.
Like you said, it's a little bit of a history lesson.
Going back, finding out this stuff.
and the cast is amazing.
Really quick, and these synopsises,
they say skateboarding is a sport.
That's a touchy subject for really hardcore rippers like myself.
Yeah, isn't that just like the commercialized version of it?
Yeah, I mean, this kind of tackles a little bit of that
to where money and fame and everything came in.
I mean, because they were saying,
I mean, there was no,
there was no video VHS of stuff.
I mean,
if you filmed anything,
it was with those little,
uh,
super eight cameras where you had to use actual film,
not,
uh,
you can just slap in a VHS tape and all that.
I mean,
so this was all way before anyone that has a handheld camera in your hand or
phone in your pocket.
So,
I mean,
I liked how they did that.
Because they were,
when,
the actual
attention to
the Z-boys and everything got in the
magazines and everything
it was they were saying it was pretty much
over with
everyone found out about the Z-boys
after they
there was no more Z-boys team
so I mean that's how
it was moving back in those days
so
I mean in a lot of this
time period rolling in the 80s
a lot of it was
if you wanted to be famous
you had to be a top
skater
in these contests
I mean because
in one of those other
Bones Brigade documentary
anthology documentary
Tony Hogg said you
you're not going to get any
publicity be it pictures and photos
or photos in the
magazines if you're not one of the
top skaters if you're not number one
or two or in the top ten
I mean these guys I mean
they became famous
just
not overnight
I mean
like I said
the fame
and the
who they were
didn't really come out until later
so
it was it was like
these guys all knew each other
locals knew them
and probably if you were in a contest
and you knew who the Z boys were
that's how people knew them
but once it got to the magazines and everything
it was kind of over with
And I did like that they did go into somewhat of a little small story of it when when money and all that starts rolling into this, how it just ruined everything.
I have, if you guys watch that Tony Alva documentary, he does say some stuff like that.
He's like, yeah, man, fame and fortune and all that kind of messes up anyone.
I mean, there's plenty of documentaries.
She's watch Stoked, the rise and fall of a gator to where he was just some little punk kid skater, punk skater.
Is that the one that killed somebody?
Yeah, he became.
I've seen that one.
He, the fame, the money and fame got to his head.
And then when all that was gone, he didn't know how to take it anymore.
And he kind of just went off the deep end.
That documentary is so good.
Like, I had known nothing about it.
the skater or the person.
Yeah.
It was just one of those, like, throw something on.
I was locked in, like, from start to finish.
Yeah.
If you guys haven't seen that, it's called Stoke, the Rising Fall of Gator.
It's on YouTube.
And another good one to check out is Rising Sun, the legend of Christian Osoy.
That's a really good one.
He's got a story to tell.
Just ripping money, fame, chicks.
and then he fell into drugs and went to prison and all she was just crazy and his but he's still
with us he found Jesus when he was in prison and uh he's living the best life he can he's still
out there ripping too man he's probably all these all these legends that I grew up with and
they're all in their 60s and they're still out there doing it so but this film was really cool
man it did kind of remind me of how my friends and I were just always always
together always skateboarding and everything these guys were surfers before they became
skateboarders and i and i liked how they did this i liked the um the effects that they used
they had had to build a lot of these sets because i i can't remember the name of the pier where it was
they got there was a big fire and it kind of fell apart and uh but they they called it the cove
and they they got to surf there and everything but it was one of those places where
it was like locals only.
Like if you weren't a local, you couldn't just show up to this basically a little private skate spot between these two broke down piers.
I like that.
I mean, I've been to places where it was skating-wise where it was like locals only.
You see that.
Yeah, even within the locals, there was like a system that you started from the bottom.
you had to work your way in.
Yeah, because at the beginning of this, we see them surfing.
And one of the guys, Chino, he basically,
basically telling them, look, you got to earn this.
You can't just get out and get on the waves.
So they had them all doing stuff.
They had Jay in parking lot detail because they told him,
because they told him, was, yeah, man, you're parking lot.
Keep it local.
And then they had Stacey go out.
in the bone yard
basically
the pillars
that are holding up the pier
they had to
he had to stay over there
in case one of these
the OGs lost their board
I don't want to stay no dings
yeah he basically told them
you need to stop it before he hits anything
so
and then Tony they I don't know
they think they had him like cleaning up or something
because he was running around picking up
trash and everything but
I liked how they
I don't know how long they were doing
that but they finally got their turn to to go out there and surf so they let them go and then uh we see j he's
ripping it uh tony's ripping it but then stacey gets on his board and wipes out and they basically
said oh man yeah you're no good get back to the bone yard so he had to go back under the pier and
stay under there and watch their boards um stacey in the documentary he does go into the story on
how they treated him
because he was
he was a local
but
I don't know I guess there's just always that one person
and everyone picks on it.
So I just assumed he was it.
Because they kind of made it seem like his home life
was a lot better than
everybody else's.
That's what I figured. Because
Tony they
they are they all in and Jay
was probably
the worst one out of all of them his mom
Rebecca de morne
beautiful woman
they made her look rough
in this one too
especially how she looked when she was in
the factory putting it out of the lamps
and she was all far out man
yeah I didn't know if she was just
on acid or something
she just seemed like she was drugged out all the time
oh and she was with the one
one dude that was leaving.
He mentioned that she's crazy.
Yeah.
So. But they,
they kind of just give you the small little,
uh,
the little story of,
of,
um,
skip and his,
uh,
the Zephyr surf shop.
And how they started this,
the skate team.
Basically,
all these guys were just little local,
uh,
grommists that grew up in dog town and they all,
just wanted to be a part of the escaping,
skate team.
Basically,
if you had that Zephyr
surf shop t-shirt man that was
like that meant you were the shit
and it was also something like that
you couldn't just go in there and buy a Zephyr shirt
and throw it on you had to be
from that neighborhood
you had to be one of them
yeah the name carried weight
because when they're when they get their
shirts later and they'd go tell like
you know even the adults
are like excited for them
yeah
I mean, I like this.
I mean, they were true that one scene.
They were at the surf shop.
They were true locals only.
Some guy came in and was looking at the boards.
And then Skip's kind of like, hi, it's $10 to browse.
And he goes, you got $10?
And that guy's like, no.
And then Chino walks up on him.
Then why'd you come into my shop, asshole?
And basically kicked him out.
And Chino's like, go shop in the valley, kook.
And just throw them out.
And yeah.
And this scene is.
when they they were all introduced into urethane wheels.
They still make urethane wheels today.
I do have a pair.
They're more for the softer wheels and they're more for like just cruising,
for you cruiser boards.
But they grip.
Yeah.
You can climb walls.
But I mean, today's wheels, I'm holding one right now.
This is a Spitfire wheel.
I don't have my glasses.
I think these are,
uh, 99s and it is a,
I don't have my glasses on. I can't read it, but it's,
it's a little smaller wheel, but it's really hard. Um, I like harder
wills for, uh, when I'm sliding and everything and all that, but
I mean, you ride whatever you want to ride. You can have hard will,
soft wheels, medium wheels, bigger wheels, small wheels. There's,
there's all kinds of crazy sizes. But for, for these guys in, in the
film, and they, they, they, they were all.
mobbing clay wheels.
And those, I've ridden
clay wheels before on one of my
friends' dad's old skateboard.
We're just riding around in the driveway.
If that's what you learn
on, hey man, you learn
how to how to ride it? But I'm like,
damn, how the hell did you guys ride
on these hard-ass wheels?
But,
because I started skateboarding
in the late 70s.
78, 79, somewhere around there.
and we had soft wheels back then so I'm sure this was a little before my time of
ripping up but they I liked how they were just a big tight crew and they had their
little spots as some old school yard with banks and I'm pretty sure these
these old banks at these schools are they're still there so you if if they are still
there or I know some places they put parking blocks and things in it to avoid from everybody
skating these things. I don't know why they do that. I mean, we don't go there during school
hours. I mean, I was blessed to have a junior high cross street from my house where I had banks
and we skated those things every day. I mean, we go there now and they don't look like much,
but for us, no skate parks. We didn't have skate parks back then. Even, but in,
During this time in the 70s, they had skate parks.
We didn't.
I mean, we, we had one skate park, and that was like 50, 60 miles away.
It was like an all-day venture to get there.
And we had to stay there all day.
We couldn't just go for an hour and then come home.
No, it was a mission to get there and skate as long as we could and then be all tired and bleeding and go home.
But this was really cool.
I loved how they just all, once they,
they only had one set
of the earthane wheels
and they put it on
it comes from oil
they put it on the board
and everybody
was just ripping with those
with those wheels
I don't even know who that guy was
that came in
was he trading those wheels for weed
isn't it the same guy later
who was like the photographer
no that was that wasn't Craig
Stessick is the guy that
is hanging out with them no it was just some other dude
just showed up.
Yeah, I guess that's what he was doing.
Craig Stessick is a,
he's a legend in the skateboarding
world,
photographer and all around weirdo.
Definitely, if you guys want to see him
in action, watch
the Bones Brigade Anthology
documentary. He's weird.
And I've never
met the man, but the people that have,
they say, yeah, he's
I don't know if he's crazy or
he's just different yeah that's just the way he is but he was a really good photographer he's the one
that came up with bones brigade and everything but this was the mean but this was cool man i loved the
camaraderie these guys had always together always skateboarding so and uh the spots that they had in
this i mean there was they didn't really go to skate parks in this thing yet but they were
riding banks at schoolyards
and then they find some little drainage
ditch where they're all skating
and these guys these actors
when it was them on the skateboards
when you could see that it was the actors
they said it was hard
to learn how to ride these little skinny boards
because when they're just riding back and forth
on this on this drainage ditch
it doesn't look like much
but I mean
if you're not a skateboarder
and you don't do this
all the time. I'm sure it'd be hard for these actors
to learn how to do this.
But during this scene
when they're riding in it, that's when they
kind of come up with the idea
of, let's
start a skateboard team.
And then they're starting throwing around the idea
of making their own skateboards.
Because the Zephyr's show
was a surf shop. They made surfboards,
custom surfboards there.
Yeah, no one guy does say there's more
pavement than there is breaks.
Yeah. I mean, because
I mean, that was true.
Because, I mean, they
from how they made Skip feel in this
or portray him in this, it was like
he was out to just get
paid. Yeah, he surfed
and he did all that. But
he's like, because when they said, maybe we should make a
skateboard or may have a skateboard team,
I could see some money in this.
And they did make money.
I mean, he was selling those boards.
They were pressing
up
plastic, I don't know, whatever
they made.
made those old banana boards back in the day.
So, but they, other than the skateboarding,
they did concentrate on the,
the human side of each character.
Because, yeah, the scene when Jay and Skip and Jay's mom
are in the restaurant and they're eating,
and then she's trying to, she gets to check
and she's trying to dig around and try to find some money.
there was a mistake during this scene
this was late
70s I would say mid
to late 70s
Sid gives her her credit card
and if you look at the credit
card it's got that magnetic strip
on the back
back in those days they didn't have
those they had credit cards
but you had to
for those old schoolers that do remember
they had this little
machine type thing
you stuck the credit card on there was
carbon paper
paper under it and you ran this thing across just kind of went
look it up if you have no idea what I'm talking about and that's how they
printed the number from the from the credit card and the name and everything
so did they go into more in the documentary about Sid no they didn't at all
they they they did more of him in this and in the documentary they mentioned the
boy that had brain cancer and that his dad let
them drain the pool
and skate it.
But that's about as much as they
mentioned.
Because I always wanted to know how he got
introduced to this crew.
I don't know.
Because in a documentary, they just said it was
just some kid they knew.
So I don't know.
He probably was hanging with him
or they just knew him.
Because I know,
I know the Japanese kid,
Shogo.
Uh-huh.
I know he met Jay
because he
took an interest in surfing
and that's how he ended up meeting Jay
and I just wanted to know
if there's any more about Sid
because he's an interesting character
No
If you watch the documentary
I mean
I've seen it a few times
I don't even think they even mentioned
the kid's name
that
that had the cancer
and they
were skating
his pool
because Sid
he kind of had a big part in this
that might have just been
something they made up
to push the character along
because yeah the end
the end was sad
with his decline in his health
but
the side actors
that played the other members
of the of the Z-boys
I thought they all did a good job
some of them maybe had
maybe had a line or two
but a lot of them
was they just found these kids
to go out there and skate.
So even a young little Asian girl,
she played Peggy.
She was,
that was a real character
from Z-boys.
And I liked her what she was doing.
Yeah,
the guy that played Shogo,
I thought he did a good job.
He's a real skateboarder.
So when they show him
ripping up and doing things,
that really is him.
So, but,
yeah, this part was cool, though,
because when they were giving out the t-shirts and the skateboards,
this is when they gave them all brand-new skateboards.
They basically ditched all the wood ones and they had the plastic ones.
It seemed like Stacey, or Skip didn't really care for Stacey.
Yeah, he said he wasn't one of them.
Yeah, he wasn't a pirate.
So, I mean, who wears a watch?
Yeah.
He's got a job, too.
See, that's what I'm talking.
about.
I think he
did he was from the
he had to have been from the neighborhood and they wouldn't
have been they wouldn't have been they wouldn't let him be
one of them. So,
but I think he just had a better
home life than
these guys. Because
we see, the only
homes really see is J's. It's just
him and single mom.
And she's a little weird. We get a little bit of Tony's.
Yeah, we get that.
I don't know.
if his mom was there, we'd just see his dad.
Yeah, don't be a ditch digger.
Yeah. So that guy,
he's like been in a ton of movies.
He's one of those that guys.
But I just watched
he was just in the dad.
He was just in Big Bang Theory.
He played a police officer in one episode.
I forgot he was in that.
But this one,
I love the scenes
when they're all just skating down the street.
It's like they all got these new boards
and they're all like,
effort, let's go.
And everyone just gets on their boards and takes off,
mobbing down the street,
just cutting off cars and just making each other fall.
I mean,
that's what we did.
Thankfully, none of us died doing what we loved.
Knock on wood.
I mean, I stay out of the street now.
But there's times, well, you got to get in the street.
But we didn't think about it.
cars and buses or anything running us over.
When you're young, you don't think about none of that anyways.
Hell no, we didn't.
We didn't wear pads.
We didn't wear helmets.
We should have.
I mean, I've rocked my dome plenty of times and broke my hand somehow.
I didn't even know I broke it, but I got x-rays one time because I hurt my wrist at work.
And the doctor said, hey, when you?
did you break your hand? I was like, what?
He showed me the x-ray. You can see that little step on your hand?
It was like on one of my, the side of my, where your pinky finger is down the side.
He goes, that bone right there. It looks like a step. And I was like, yeah, he goes,
that's not supposed to be that way. You broke your hand at some point.
And it had to have been from skateboarding. I mean, when you fall, I mean, you slam your hands down.
I try to fall on my hands first
And I'm just years and years of doing that
I assume it broke or fractured somewhere
But I didn't
I just must have not felt it
Or didn't bother me
I mean like I said I've rocked my dome plenty of times
But when I get older
When I ride out in the parks like that
I yeah the pools mainly
I said I have a helmet on
I'm just save this little
since I got left.
But, I mean, these scenes
when they're just mobbing down the street,
I mean, it was, that was us, man.
We did that.
You want to see a good movie?
It was directed by
Larry Clark.
What the hell was it called?
What's up, Rockers?
If you guys haven't seen that film,
it's a story about these little Mexican skateboarders.
in L.A.
And
it came out to 2005.
I don't see if it's
streaming anywhere.
But that film,
that was us.
A bunch of little brown kids,
red kids,
Indian kids, Mexican kids,
skaters.
Just living in life.
Skateboarding,
had a band,
getting at chicks.
Yeah,
this movie's pretty awesome.
If you guys haven't seen it,
definitely check it out.
I don't see that it's streaming anywhere,
but I'm sure.
Larry Clark movie.
Yeah.
It's probably not streaming.
It's not like kids or anything or bully.
It's not, it gets wild, but it ain't as wild as kids and bully.
But it's a really, really good film.
Definitely check out what's up rockers.
But, but yeah, I mean, the scenes when they're just mobbing down the street,
having a good time, man.
The first time watching this film, I was like,
man I mean I miss those days
I mean a lot of my buddies
still do skate but none of them
live where I live at but when I go back home
to Oakland I always hook up with them and we
just either mob down the streets
our old old neighborhoods
or go to skate parks
mainly the skate parks because now
that they're everywhere we go there
and I mean I roll around I'm not
flipping the board or doing anything like that
I'm just I have fun just
going fast especially in the pools
so but
yeah
that during that scene after them all mobbing down the street,
they all kind of end up at Jay's house.
This is when we find out that,
uh,
uh,
uh,
uh,
Jay's mom's boyfriend was moving out.
You know,
the guy's,
Tom Cruise's cousin.
That guy is?
Yeah.
He's another one of those that guys.
He's like a ton of things.
It's always like a henchman in a action movie.
Yeah.
He was in,
uh,
lost.
If you guys remember that show.
And, uh,
yeah.
he's been in a ton of movies
I mean you see
you see his face
you can
oh man he was in this this or that
he's never like the main guys
in it he's just a side guy
or yeah like a henchman or something
but
this is yeah we do see that
Jay
would you say he came from a broken home
yeah
yeah because I mean
it's
Jay had a tough life
and he
when he grew up
he just
kept it going
he did go to prison
I think it was for drugs
when he was older
but at this time
the young
the young stages
of Jay Adams
he was just
he was just skating
having a good time
not I mean
there wasn't a word
care in the world
I mean
seemed like
to me
this relationship
he was his mom was in
he liked this
guy he liked this relationship that she was in yeah because this guy was a surfer yeah because i
don't know that's just how i took it like even though he played it off like he didn't care i felt
like this one this one kind of hurt for him yeah they probably seemed like his mom probably
had guys coming and going but he he did like this dude but that he was really kind of standoffish
and probably a little sad
that this guy was leaving.
Yeah, I mean, because he does
before he leaves, he tries to give him his surfboard
and he's like, you're still my boy.
Yeah, but just
Jay, the way he's looking at him,
he's just like,
fuck you, you're out of my house.
As he said, but she's crazy, Jay,
and he was like,
but that's what you liked about her, right?
Yeah, he just kind of
packs up all his stuff and bones out.
Because, yeah, when Jay rolled up,
when they all rolled up his they see like his mom was probably throwing stuff outside because there's broken records and all kinds of other things just laying outside in the alleyway but
i felt for jay i mean not saying my life was the greatest growing up i mean i got into it my parents and everything
but just getting on your board and taking off just to get away from your house i've done that many times but
I thought that was really cool
But yeah, they
They
I guess there was a good
They seemed like they kind of focused more on Jay
Well they
In the movie they refer to him as the spark
Yeah they
They really just
Focused a little more on him
They had the Stacey's part in the story was there as well
As well as Tony's but
It seemed like a lot of it was
Was geared around Jay Adams
Uh story
This is written by Stacy right
Yeah.
Maybe that's just how he's seen it.
Like, Jay was the main one.
Because, I mean, they do talk about him in the documentary.
They say he came from a not so cool house.
So, but I mean, Jay, I think he kind of, from what they were saying,
he kind of kept to himself.
But they knew he was angry on what was going on in his house.
But he still didn't stop him.
I mean, skateboarding is.
something that
saves us, man.
It's saved me many times.
Just things that were going on in my life,
I just get on my skateboard
and all those things go get out of my head
because I'm worried about not falling.
So I'm just,
I concentrate on what I'm doing
when I'm on a skateboard.
And just like, whatever was bothering me before
was just out the window.
I mean, I've gotten into it plenty of times
with my mom.
And one time it just got a little, two out of hand.
Got in a big, huge fight with my mom, and I just grabbed my board and left.
Just jumped on the train, went to San Francisco, and skated up and down those hills.
I was mad and sad, but I just, but the time I got back home, I was like, I felt, I felt better.
My skateboarding is, skateboarding for me was like a drug.
I mean, I needed it.
I had to have it.
I couldn't stop doing it.
I'm 54 years now, about to be 55.
and I'm still
still riding.
I can't stop.
When it's time for me to lay in the ground,
that's when I'll stop.
But when it's time for me to get in the box,
make sure my skateboard is with me.
But because, yeah,
when they focus on Stacy's story,
it's just minimal.
Yeah, yeah, you don't even really see.
You see one scene with his dad.
Yeah.
That's when he's,
seems like good home lives.
dad's asking how his day was and his dad's kicking back having a drink trying to conserve water.
Yeah.
Because we do see that Stacey did come from a better upbringing.
I assume his mom was there.
They didn't show her or anything, but he was still out there doing it.
I don't think he was like super rich.
Maybe he just wanted his own money because he did, he was out of all of them,
he was the only one that worked.
He worked at that little restaurant, plus the tables and everything.
Yeah.
Benefits of having a job.
Because in 19,
uh,
Delmar, California,
April,
1975,
they go to the,
uh,
Bonnie Cat,
Cadillac Nationals.
Amazingly,
just a early,
mid-70s skateboard contest.
Now,
I don't know much about skating.
I'm a big fan of it,
but is this what these tournaments were like?
Back in these days, yeah.
I mean, not like, I know some of you new schoolers,
you think in contests, you think of X games.
The X games didn't come until, what, late 1990s, early 2000s,
I would say.
Shit, not going to make me look it up.
When did the X games start?
Well, I mean, like the way they were skating is now what I,
consider not that it's not skating but
what jay and then were doing was
what i consider skating not
the other guys that was in the tournament
yeah
really quick x game started in 95
so but but this
um
for mid 70s i mean this is what
contests were
a lot of freestyle
just basically
what they were
doing nobody was flipping boards yet none of that didn't happen yet rodney moan was probably a baby
when this was going on rodney moll is the one that started all that flipping it and ollie in and everything
well alan gelfin invented the ollie but flat ground ollie was rodney mollard but and at these times
i mean these guys came from a different different area of skateboarding they grew up in the hood
basically. And all these
other kids that were in these contests
were a little privileged,
rich kids. Yeah, I guess
that's how I was trying to put it.
Because it just
didn't seem gritty.
No, the grit showed up
when the Z-boys showed up, when the separate
teams showed up. Basically,
he's like, here, here's our entry forms.
Now, where's our trophies?
Because Stacy basically didn't look,
man, we need to go to this contest and we need
to shut these guys down.
So they were, everybody was like, hell yeah.
So they were juiced.
And they were, they were fired up.
They get to the contest and they see what they have to deal with.
And they're all like, what the hell are we supposed to do on this flat top?
It was basically like a little wood, maybe Masonite top.
And there was a small little bank, but it was basically just flat ground.
and from what from what these guys are doing the earlier skaters
um
wheelies
360s
uh
tricks that
you look at it
wait what the hell is this
I mean but that was skateboarding in the in the mid 70s
during this time in this movie
no again nobody wasn't flipping boards
and all that yet
I mean that came later
I mean that came later
I mean, everybody, you mean, your feet stayed on the board.
I mean, again, no Ollie's, none of that happened yet.
Apparently, your hands never touched the ground either.
Yeah.
I mean, the Ollie's did late 70s, early 80s, whenever Alan Gelfin invented it.
But he invented that skating at a skate park on a, on a, on a ban on embankment.
what he was shooting out of the
out of the top
that's how he invented that and then
everyone
started doing it but yeah
Rodney Mullen man he started doing the flatland
Ollie he's the first one to do that
and then it just took off
from there
but this one yeah
this type of
type of skateboarding
I remember all this
because I remember seeing skateboarders in the park
in central park
Golden Gate Park in San Francisco
of guys just doing what they're doing,
rolling around, doing wheelies,
doing one-foot wheelies and 360s and all that.
But when the Z-Boys showed up, man,
they added their surf style to what they were doing.
They were going fast, they were carving hard,
and just mimicking the stuff they did on their surfboard onto a skateboard.
So that's how their style was.
It was just more edgy.
and just fucking bulls out.
They weren't just being trying to be all fancy
and just 360 it up.
And wheelies or manuals or anything.
They,
these guys weren't about that.
These guys were about style and just skating hard.
So I really love this scene
because we see Jay Adams going at it.
And then this is,
I mean, this is the whole Zephyr team.
But then this is when we see,
uh,
uh,
Stacy come in.
But before that,
um,
the judges are like,
all right,
man,
we,
we got to give them,
we got to judge him.
We got to score them,
but they're like,
he didn't do one
basic trick that these guys knew.
They're like,
he didn't do this.
He didn't do that.
And how do we score them?
But they tell them,
like we got to give him a score.
That's why I didn't understand.
It was like a freestyle.
Yeah.
Right.
So they were kind of like just,
all right.
So they,
they,
ended up giving them a score, but they didn't
They didn't know the judges at that time.
They didn't know how to score the style of skateboarding that the Z-boys were doing
Because they never seen it.
They were somewhere in the valley where everything is nice, I guess,
And in this time, I mean, these guys,
They probably had parks and big open, nice spots for them to skate.
And these guys came from the different parts of California,
Southern California,
where their skate park was the streets.
That was us.
We didn't have skate parks.
I mean, a lot of you guys now,
you rippers that are out there,
younger rippers,
you guys don't realize
how blessed and spoiled you guys are.
There's skate parked everywhere.
We didn't have those in the 80s.
We had one skate park in Benicia, California.
Rest and peace is no longer there anymore.
We have a skate park up here.
I mean, they're everywhere in there.
now the skate park we have here in the town that i live in it sucks but it's better than nothing i'd
have been fine with that back when i was growing up because and we didn't we didn't have a park
if we knew someone that had a ramp we better hurry up and hit it because it'd be gone neighbors
don't like it and they're tear it down shout out to my boy chris he had a ramp at his house and um
he lived like on a cliff because i remember when we first skated it we're like fuck dude what did you
fall off. Because if you fell off
the side of it,
you went down this big ass
100 foot embankment to a fence.
None of us ever fell off.
Our boards fell off plenty of times, but we
once we're out there skating that
ramp, we didn't even think about falling off that edge.
We just stayed away from it, but we used to
a lot of blast. But yeah, during the scene,
they just didn't know how to judge them.
They didn't know or understand
the style of skating that
the Z-boys were doing. But I did like
this part, that one little shoddy.
walked up to him and said oh man you blew me away and then jay's like what you want to blow me
he said maybe because yeah this is when uh stacey comes up and uh starts doing his thing um
tony does it for me if i'm judging these guys j j adams had uh a better more gnarly style than all of them
I mean, not to say that Tony and Stacey were no good.
I mean, they're both, they're all legends.
But as far as this skating and this time, man, these guys, I mean, Jay Adams was just killing it everywhere.
And Amil Hirsch did an amazing job as Jay Adams.
Yeah, Stacey's skating was a kind of a mixture of what they've seen before and what they haven't seen before.
Yeah, he had like the style of both worlds.
because I remember growing up
and knowing who Stacy Peralta was
and seeing what he could do,
skating the Bulls,
doing countless 360s
and his style.
But when he was older
running the Bones Brigade
with Powell Peralta,
I mean,
we see him skating
in, I think it was
public domain,
the fourth video.
in the beginning we see Stacy skating down the street and he's just doing 360s and just
manuals rocking the manuals over and over and I remember seeing that for the first time and it just
made me forget that Stacy Peralta was or is a skateboarder and he's probably much younger
and in the 80s whenever banned this came out or was it was no public domain then
ban this for you palper out to historians anyway but yeah stacey to me and the way they portrayed
him in this film he had the best of both worlds he had the the dogtown venice shredder style and he
had the the nice nice boy style i don't know because he was doing the the 360s and the wheelies
and everything i mean j j and them were doing them too but not like
Stacy. Stacy he could do 10 360s in a row and everything but he did have he still had that
same street style with him. Um what the hell's happening I'm getting some kind of
there's your question you to bypass the system private window. I don't know what you
talking about but all right um so yeah when Stacy's up there getting this run we do see
some people off to the side, some haters.
And they're basically saying that
he got disqualified
for putting his hand down
onto the little platform that they were skating on.
But he got a good score.
He got two tens and a nine.
And then everyone, I mean, the Z-boys were all,
they were all excited for him and everything.
But this is when the judges rolled up
and said, now you're disqualified
because you put your hands on the ground.
And then they're,
Stacey's saying,
everybody put their hands on the ground.
This is when Tony Alva stepped into it.
And he's like,
dude,
he goes,
the guy tied me.
And then the judge pushes Tony.
He goes,
can your dirty ass even read?
And Tony Alva just says,
fuck that.
I mean,
the hood came out.
And he just,
wow,
clocked that full.
I already did the same thing, too, man.
I mean,
I mean, yeah,
man,
just some little street kid.
and those street Mexican kid, man.
You got to watch it.
You don't know who these kids are.
I mean, just because you're older.
They're from a different part of California
where you respect your elders
and don't yell at grown-ups.
Man, but these guys are from a whole different world,
dog town, and basically you don't,
you don't fuck with them,
and you're going to find out.
And that guy found out.
Tony Alvin fucking dropped his ass.
Yeah, like when he punched him,
he said, yeah, my dirty ass.
Yep
And Skip, man
He was no joke too
He was about that life
Because the other judges
Came in and like
You guys need to get the hell out of here
Get off our skate park
And then they're yelling
Why do you guys think you can just come here
And pull this shit
And Skip was like
You're just mad because my boys
Were kicking your girl's asses
And then one of them shoved Skip
And then he just pulls off his belt
His leather belt
Wrapped it around his fist
All right who wants some
Who's next?
And who wants to step to the
plate and then he's balled up his fist with that belt around his knuckles and then he just
takes it off and he's kind of hey man it's all right man sorry man sorry man let's just these kids are
at a tender age but they basically said all right you guys could stay but that guy needs to leave
he's disqualified and they kicked uh tony alva out of the or disqualified Tony alva out of the
the contest yeah i felt bad for him because he's talking to his sister and he's just like
I just wanted to show the trophies to my dad.
Yeah.
Because she was like, fuck
dad. I mean, he ain't nothing.
So, wait a minute.
I'm always saying, don't be a ditch digger.
They probably sticks in his head.
Yeah.
I mean, I'm sure I said some things to my boys
that stuck to them.
It was more my mom than my dad.
Don't get me wrong.
I love my mom to death.
She's awesome.
But I keep telling my kids.
The grandma,
you guys know ain't the one that raised me so it never is she spoils them so and i'm sure uh my boys
will tell the little guys yeah the cha chae isn't who raised us yeah renn used to get after me for
being a little i came from a different time so but yeah so but yeah this is this is cool though
stacey our um skip kind of rolls up on stacey like hey man he goes nice ride and yeah this is when he
said, oh, this is one of the advantages of having a job.
And Skips, well, you got me.
He got me there.
But he did ask him, hey, man, you hungry?
We're going to go eat.
And he's like, uh, no.
You got to get it right.
He said, are you hungry, bro?
Oh, that's right.
And he's like, no.
But then when he got in the car, he was like, Skip called me, bro.
And what the hell was Nicky Reed's name?
Kathy.
I don't think we mentioned as Tony's sister.
Yeah, Nikki Reed, Kathy, she's a Kathy Alva.
They did not mention her in the documentary,
so I don't know if she was a character they made up,
or did he really have a sister?
I don't know.
Movies when I've learned of him or his sister in it.
Did she have a relationship with Stacy?
I don't know.
So, but they end up going to the restaurant
where everyone's hanging out at
and they finally let
Stacy be one of them
because they give Stacy a Zephyr
surf shop t-shirt
and he's like
yeah man goes that that shirt right there can get
you more titty than anything
just wearing that thing
and Kathy's kind of like
he's already got that covered
so yeah now Stacy's one of the
Z boys and they're
going to start their reign
of terror
This scene was a little rough, though,
because Skip drops Jay off at where his mom works,
some little back alley shop with her assembling lamps.
And she's just doing whatever she needs to do
to put food on the table for her and Jay.
I don't know what she was doing on the assembly line.
Yeah, I mean, she probably said,
like, it took her forever to do one.
And all these other ladies were probably knocking.
knocking them out 10 every minute.
So, but yeah, but she's single mom struggling doing what they're doing.
And Jay was trying to do his part too.
Just put some money on the table.
We can get into that little more.
But he goes home and he just kind of just, Jay's got issues, man.
He just mad, mad at the world on what's going on in his life.
because he takes a knife and he starts stabbing up the surfboard that his mom's ex-boyfriend gave him
and basically F it. He doesn't he don't need it. So he just thrashed it and stabbed it all up.
But this is when we get more skateboarding.
This is, oh, Tony met some girl at some skate contests and found out
that they had a pool
and I guess he
snaked the keys from her
so they go to the pool
and it's empty
because during this time
there was a big drought
in California
and he jumps into the pool
it's a nice pool too man
it's big
nice transitions and everything
and he's basically
like yeah this surf breaks
24 hours a day or whatever he said
and he goes
and we're going to be the
first ones to write it. Were these guys the
originators of pool skating? I don't know.
I mean, there was probably somebody on the other side of
the country that did it
and didn't have no
no one to publicize
what they did. So this movie's
telling me they were. Yeah.
I'm going to say, yeah, these guys were the first
ones, but they learned
how to do it. So I assumed Tony was at
this chick's house and went in the backyard and said,
hey, man, saw this pool.
So they all basically
well Tony had the keys
they weren't home because they were waiting for whoever
lived there to leave
and then they had the keys to the side yard
the door and then they go in
and they just start to skate in the
pool. Yeah I mean it makes sense
for them because when you look at the pool
the way it's shaped it looks like waves
the first time I wrote a pool
at this scene
it just reminds me of
of that
because
that shit was
hard. It was
hell hard.
The first pool I
skated was in
it was in East Oakland.
The deep east
and it was not a good
neighborhood. But they left us alone
because we were little dark skateboarders.
It was kind of like a locals only
spot and
it was in the hood.
It was behind this apartment building.
It was probably their old swimming pool.
They just didn't ever use it anymore.
So it was a really small pool,
but it was a perfect pool to learn how to skate.
My brother took us there.
Me and my buddy's there the first time,
and I had no idea what I was doing.
And how I learned was carve the bottom.
Just get the feeling of it.
Start carving the bottom,
kind of just, all right, not falling.
And then slowly getting more speed
and just getting a little higher with my cars,
carves.
next thing you know, like these guys, I went over the light.
And if you got over the light, man, you were the shit.
When you first learned how to ride a pool, that was our mission.
Every new pool that we got was like to see who can get over that light first.
Sometimes I did.
Sometimes my buddy Gab or whoever else was with us.
But this scene when they're all just learning how to ride the pool, it was pretty sweet.
They end up taking up.
off the diving board to get that out of the way.
Sid, man, he was no joke.
Man, he gave it a shot and slammed hell of hard.
Well, I like about Sid, because he slams a few times in this movie, and he keeps getting
back up on that board.
Yeah, if anyone, he is the one that needed to be careful out of all of them, but this.
Well, they don't know about the cancer yet.
You don't know, but he just says he has an inner ear problem.
These scenes, they did say they had to learn how to ride a bowl.
But you can see when they're really, really carving high, you can see it wasn't them.
But when they were kind of doing low spots, it was them riding in it.
So this was the beginning of the montage of them just searching for that next pool.
I love the scene because that's what we did.
We didn't have a car.
We'd have to hoof it up or foot.
If somebody mentioned that there was a pool somewhere,
even now, even to this day, man,
you find out there's a pool,
you better hit it quick because it could be gone the next day.
Blood Bowl was the best because we could just go there any time, any day,
and it was there.
But at the end, years of us skating and learning how to skate that pool,
eventually they filled it up with dirt.
but we got to skate that thing one last time before the bulldozers came in and filled it up with dirt and paved it over.
So that was really cool.
But these guys just looking over fences, house to house, trying to find the next pool and what they were doing during this montage.
And I sit there and I'm watching it now, man.
That was us.
Again, you find that pool.
You better hurry up and hit it.
Did you guys have your own pump?
No, we weren't that hardcore. We just made sure it was empty. Then we would skate it.
I remember there was this old abandoned country club on the other side of the hill and conquered hills.
And you couldn't even see it from the road. We had to go through all these bushes and everything and climb down this cliff to get to this place.
And there was a pool and it was perfect. I mean, we could skate that thing all day and not worry about somebody coming.
and chasing us out of there.
But some of the pools that we did find,
a lot were old motels.
There was one close to Lake Merritt.
It was like a crackhead motel.
But the pool in the back was awesome.
The guys that they worked there,
they didn't care.
They just told us, don't get hurt.
But I remember going there one time.
I was just by myself.
I was by there.
I was, fuck that.
I'm going to get a few runs in this pool.
You had to climb this big cinder block wall to get to it.
because I didn't like going through the motel part because there was always some creepy people doing what they were doing in the hallways.
But one time I climbed up to the top of that wall and I was about to climb over and I see a guy sitting there shooting up.
I was like, whoop, nope, and I just took it off.
I was like, fuck, man, I wanted to skate that pool all of that.
But yeah, a lot of these pools that we skated, man, there was one at these old apartments.
somebody at work not work at school mentioned it and I heard them and it was right by our house
I told my buddies fuck it dude let's go so after school we went down there we found that apartment
and we saw that there was a pool in there and we just jumped in there and just started ripping it
before we got chased out and when we were there these these guys that um another little skate
crew we hated them we got into many fights with them they were like how you why you got this is
pool we we found it first and i was like
you got your name on it so we
we all we were all skating it but then uh somebody came
and we all took off and jumped over the wall to get out of there
i like this thing too because when they're out there skating somebody's pool
uh there's a lookout kid and he's going pigs pigs
because the cops show up and everyone's like fuck it
there was many times where he did this man bunch of skateboarders just
I run him just didn't want to get busted by whoever.
So, yeah, we ran for the cops plenty of times, but man, this scene was hell of funny.
I remember sitting in the theater watching this for this first time laughing,
and going, man, this was us running from whoever's pool that was.
Ah, it was such a good time.
But yeah, this is when Tony, some girl, some of the, I think it was a little blonde girl from the contest.
she rolls by and has Tony jump into her convertible but Tony's girlfriend was
some little Mexican girl in the hood but she saw him but
so everyone just ended up bailing out Tony goes to this little rich girl's house and
starts doing this thing with her and they kind of just a montage of everything
but then they finally uh they're out they're out having lunch or whatever
we see Skip back at the surf shop and they're pressing up skateboarders,
skateboards that they're making.
Because at first, one of the shapers, the surfboard shapers,
because when Rick, Skip was telling them, like, yeah, man, we should design a skateboard.
And one of those shapers are like, dude, I don't make toys.
I make surfboards.
And Skip kind of like, well, we should make it.
We can make some money out of this.
So, I mean, I guess they, from what they were saying in the movie,
they were making money.
They were getting orders from all over the world.
I mean, basically because Zephyr was a big name at the time.
Where was the money going?
I don't know, probably drinking it in drugs.
I have no idea.
I mean, he didn't become a millionaire doing what he was doing.
So, but I did like how they show all that.
And then, well, those guys are all having lunch or whatever.
Skip kind of rolls up on them.
rolls up on them and starts yelling at them like where are you because in the beginning there were
skibbles down and look man we're going to have practice every day and if you don't show up where you're
going to get in trouble so but skip kind of finds them and starts yelling at them like where are you guys
how come you're not here and he's just yelling at them and they're like well oh well whatever
patty slaps tony yeah it took his patty slabs him it took his burger
but with that I mean because they're like should we take them to the pool but they didn't they
these guys they were on their own mission I mean they basically I guess they were still out there
practicing but in the movie they were like man they found the new thing other than skating
banks at school they were riding pools so they were all out there doing their thing and skip
was back making skateboards and I assume surfboards as well but we we do find know that
Stacey has seen Tony's
sister
But this is when she does him dirty
Because Jay was always looking too
He was eyeing Kathy
But then when
Stacey's like
Come on, we got it
We should go let's go do something
And she's like no let's just stay here and party
And she just basically wanted to
Well she wanted to get down right there
In the front yard
Yeah but he was like
Now my brother's right there
and I get it
I mean, I know some girls like this
I mean, they
They wanted it right there
And you would do it
Or they're gonna find someone else
To do it
And that's exactly what she did
She's a little hoe man
She didn't get us fucking
Next thing you know
We see Jay's out there
Flirting around with her
And next thing you know
We see Tony in there
Making out with his girl
And Jay and Kathy jump in the next bed
See I don't know
I don't know if that happened
but I don't know if I could be messing around with someone
and my sister in the next bed with one of my buddies.
Tony was like,
you got no hair on your inchworm?
It's like,
your sister's right there.
I know.
I'm like,
dude,
come on,
but she was a little scandalous,
man,
she didn't give a fuck.
She's like,
fuck it.
All right,
come here.
And Jay,
I'm like,
give me kitty.
And then their dad comes home and starts yelling at them.
And Jay and that other girl
jump out of the
well no jay jumps out the window she ran and jumped in the closet
but
we find out here
that uh
sit is a little rich boy
because uh his dad i don't know what his dad does but he's got a big house
and they got that fat pool in the backyard
and they kept telling uh sid to see
to ask your dad to drain it
and he's like no it goes if you guys to drain it
and you guys get hurt you're gonna sue me you're gonna sue him
And he's like, let me talk to your dad.
And he's like, the only Mexicans, my dad talks to him, pushes long Mars.
Yep.
So, but next thing we see them, they're going to another contest.
Depending on which version you watch, for those you, I know, it's on Tubey.
And I'm sure it's the PG-13 one.
Because the scene when Jay's yelling out the window at the old ladies,
he kind of just like
I want some of that
or whatever he says
but in the unrated version
he's yelling out the window at them
and goes yeah I want to try some of the gray beaver
and those old ladies
call me when your balls drop
they start yelling at him
that's the only part I know
that was in the unrated
version of this
so they go to another
contest
and this is when some of the big wigs are there.
We got one guy that represents GNS, Gordon and Smith.
I think that's what it is.
But everybody knows who the Zephyr team is at this point.
Because everyone's like, yeah, everybody wants to see the Z-boys.
And all these big skateboarding manufacturers at the time
is when they start honing for new,
for new,
because the one guy from GNS, he goes up to
Tony, he goes up to Stacy and Jay
basically telling me, look, you guys come
come skate for us and you'll make all kinds of money.
So, but none of them are buying it because they're still
all about, nah, we're down for the hood and we're going to stick
with Sid and the Zephyr team.
But we see the skip, he's out there
slang in his boards.
He got like a bag of skateboards
and he's selling them to everyone.
Either just the deck or deck and wheels
and trucks and everything set up.
But this contest was a little different.
It seemed like it was a lot smaller,
but the little course that they were skating on
had like more ramps
and still had the little small,
little slanted transitions in it.
But they were all out there still skating.
But again, again, everybody was there
to see the Z boys.
So when they get up,
everybody's hooting and hollering and cheering and
Tony at one point,
he starts to get a little brave.
But he sees that everyone's cheering for Jay.
Everyone's cheering for Stacey
and whoever else is out there ripping.
So Tony wants to do something more spectacular
than what everyone's seeing right now.
Yeah, because later it doesn't feel like
they make it seem like it's for money that changes.
But Tony always felt like it was that fain.
that notoriety.
Yeah.
In this film,
they made it seem
like Tony was about
being famous
and about the money.
Yeah.
Was that true?
I don't know.
I don't know, Tony.
I met him once.
He was cool.
But in this,
they made a scene.
But they did say in the documentary
that, yeah,
once the money and all that came in,
that kind of ruined
friendships and everything else.
Because, yeah,
Tony is a big star.
He's signing girls' legs
and kissing.
other girls and all that
because they're like
hey where you going tony because i see you guys in the parking lot
and this is when the uh the gns guy
kind of goes up to tony he starts trying to uh poach him
from the zephyr team basically you know what tony
i think you're the greatest
skateboarder in the world
and some all this other shit telling them basically tell him
look man you come skate for me you can get whatever you want
but tony he's just sitting there listening to him
he's kind of like uh okay but uh
skip sees that this guy is out there talking to him because later he goes up to
to Tony and asking well what did he say to you and before he can answer Jay kind of
butts in he goes man that guy said a lot of shit to me saying that he goes you could be
one of the greatest skateboarders in the world a matter of fact you are the greatest so like
Tony was getting ready to say that but Jay just kind of put it in and then I think at this
point, Tony
realized, well, shit, and she's not just after me.
He's after everybody.
Because all the stuff that
Jay said, that's exactly what
that guy from GNS.
Yeah, I like how Stacy
walks by and he skip-ass
him. And he's like, apparently we're all the best
skaters in the world.
Yeah, man. I mean, skateboarding, man.
It's a business.
I mean, especially
with these companies, man, they
need good skaters.
to sell their products.
I mean,
for us when we're growing up,
I mean,
our idols are the world skateboarders,
the guys that we saw in the magazine.
And when videos started coming out,
finally getting to see our heroes in action,
they're like, man, I mean,
I grew up during the Tony Hawk era.
I mean, Tony Alvin, Z-boys, and all that,
they were there,
but by the time I was really,
really skateboarding,
during the 80s.
I started in the 70s,
but I was just learning
how to ride down the street.
A lot of buttboarding
during those early years.
But once I was standing
and ripping down the street
on that little ass
skinny banana board,
I wish I still had it.
Somebody stole it.
I see someone selling one
the, it was a yellow board
and it said sizzler on it.
I see somebody selling one
on eBay.
I want to buy it
just to have it
so I can hang it on the wall
and say this was,
who knows,
it might be.
be my skateboard. Somebody stole
it from me. But I just
wanted really just for more
me.
I mean, because this is what I
learned to skateboard on this,
this model, this skinny
nostalgic purpose.
So yeah,
even the Stacey's
kind of telling, yeah, apparently we're all
the best skateboarders in the world.
So, but this
during this time, the way they're making it in the movie
is that
magazines are coming.
Skateboard magazine are coming.
And they want to do
and featured article on
Dogtown, on the Z-Boys,
on Tony Alba, on Stacey Peralta
and Jay Adams and the rest of the
Zephyr team.
Because they're all out there at some pool.
They're skating,
taking pictures of everybody.
Jay seemed to be the one
that didn't really care for the spotlight.
He was just living his life
and skating and surfing.
That's what he wanted to do.
Tony seemed like he saw the fame.
He saw the chicks and the money.
So he went that route.
Is all that true?
I don't know.
If I ever meet Tony again, I'll ask him,
hey, how true was it?
Were you about the fame and fortune over skateboarding?
And Stacey just, he didn't seem like he was all about that money and girls.
He was just skating and he had his girlfriend.
And Jay was just like, he didn't think he wasn't about the spotlight.
But Tony was the one that wanted to be that.
Because then later on after that article came out,
they had a party at the Zephyr shop.
And this is when we're introduced to Johnny Knoxville's character.
Topper.
Topper Berks.
Yeah.
and Topper Burke, he's just some rich guy that has the money.
He's rolling around in a roll voice.
Did he own a company or was he just like an independent rich guy that just saw dollar signs?
I don't know how true that that is or did they just make him up for the movie?
I don't know because he's not mentioned in the documentary.
But it seemed like Skip knew who he was.
Yeah, Skip did because they're starting to say,
like man look man
Toppers over there talking to your
crew trying to get them
Fulton from the Mighty Ducks is like
cut them in on some of the profits
Yeah
And this is where I asked where the money was going
Because skips like there is no profits asshole
This is a surf shop
I think they were just selling those boards
How they made it seem in the movie
Just to keep making more
Because they weren't paying
the boys
because yeah they got in that big argument
why don't you cut them in on some of the profits
and that's what he said what profits
so they were just basically
selling the break even
yeah and then do it all over again
yeah because that one scene
when they're printing board
making a board skips
like man I got to we need to
make all these boards because I got to
sell them at the next
contest so I can pay
for the last batch
I guess the resin for the actual decks is what they were doing.
So they were, yeah, they weren't really making a profit.
They were just making enough to keep it going.
Bolton didn't care.
They were going surfing.
Yeah.
Wasn't part of the deal, bro.
Yep.
He was like, man, he told you, man, it's the surf shop.
When the serves good, we're out.
Chino's sleeping in the background.
Yeah.
And this is when we're introduced to Chino's girlfriend.
the beautiful
um sophia vagara
what the hell is her name
in this it's like amelia or something
yeah i'm sorry man she is too fine
i watched all the modern family
just to see her uh yeah amelia that's who
she was old is she now
look it out she is 54
what she's the same age as me god damn
all right
with it.
America,
this is when we're introduced to America Ferreira.
Thunder monkey.
Yeah.
They hook her up with,
I'm sorry, you got to give me some background
on that name.
I don't know.
Frize, what do you want to be?
Thunder monkey.
I don't know.
Again, these are characters
they probably just made up for the movie.
They feel like that character's based on
somebody.
Chino was a hater
Yeah
Because he saw that these guys were getting
More publicity
More famous
Because when they're all
Everyone's happy celebrating
The Z-boys are on the cover of skateboarder magazine
He starts spouting off
Because these guys wouldn't
Couldn't do nothing
They had to have my permission to surf the cove
And that's when his girlfriend Sophia is kind of like
Who wants to surf that toxic double?
anyway and he starts grabbing it. Would you say, bitch?
So, but yeah,
in his mind,
he's still at the pier. Yeah.
They hook up
Sid with a Thunder Monkey.
We see Jay and Kathy
making out, and this is when Stacy
finds out that
Jay's messing around with Kathy.
This was wrong.
Yeah, he's
just, she just leaves.
Yep, she's like, and then all he says.
all he says is you couldn't handle it bro in a way yeah but i mean say something at first
yeah he kind of did say hey bro i'm sorry man i was going to tell you but uh you can't handle her
and then he's going and you can and he goes well apparently so but i mean i get it
I knew I knew some girls like
Like her that
Were straightforward about everything
So but
Well she wasn't even straightforward about this
Because like when Stacey pulled up
And caught him
Like she's just like I gotta go
Yeah
But
Jay was kind of like
Yeah whatever bro
I mean you'd be all right
So
But you can tell Jay was upset about it
Yeah
he was a little, but he was a little buzz, too, so he wasn't tripping.
But I felt for Stacy, though, man, he was like, man, bad enough that he's not with her anymore,
but to see one of your boys that you thought was your boy is hooking up with your, your,
I assume she had to have been his ex by that time.
I don't know, but next thing we see Monkey, Thunder Monkey, and, uh,
Sid going at it.
I don't know how old America
Ferrer was at this time, but she was
busting out during this
scene.
So, but she
ended up
breaking his cherry, I guess.
And giving him that
Thunder monkey. Yep.
So he,
because he just, he comes out
and his boys, I just got laid.
And they're like,
ah, right on, bro. About time.
Yeah, this is one where,
introduced to Topper Burke
Johnny Knoxville.
He's all pimped out.
His little pimp suit is
Rolls Royce. He's got his
muscle with him and all these chicks.
But Skip
knows who he is.
Because yeah, we see Tony
talking to
Topper and then
one of Skip's boys
are like, hey man, look, Topper's
over there talking to
your boy. So, but
he basically tells him look man
you can do a lot better
you can get more money
if you come with me
basically that's what
what he was telling him
and uh
Tony started to get it because he
after that conversation he has
he has with him
he tells him that look
um
Tony goes to tell the rest of the guys
like look man
he goes
we need to start getting paid
and he goes
Skipping cutting us in on anything
but Jay was straight up about it
he was like we don't
we don't skate
for money
but Tony's like
no man I gotta get paid
I want to get paid now
and even Red Dog jumped in
and he goes yeah I want to make out
with two chicks tonight
so but
guys with money
and everything
and they
they see the talent,
they're going to roll in
and try to get them.
Like look, man,
I can give you
probably like a hundred bucks
at this time
if you come ride for me.
But yeah,
I don't know who this guy was.
I mean,
I don't know if he was a real character
or I don't know.
But if he was,
it was maybe just an independent
board company.
So I don't know.
I don't know.
He wasn't a part of any of the big ones.
Yeah, because when we
After he goes with Topper
And we see Tony later
I don't see no kind of
Company name or anything
It's just Tony's name
Yeah
But I think he gave him the money
To start Alva Skateboards
Well that's
That's what they're talking about
Because we see that
Because Topper was the one
They had all the money
To get Tony to where he was
Again, I don't know if that was
That part was true
Because they do not talk about
in the documentary.
But we see Jay outside.
He's just kind of hanging out.
And then we see Sophia walk up onto him,
start flirting around with Jay.
I don't think I've been able to handle that.
Because she called him Poppy, too.
I don't know.
Ooh, all right.
We would have to go hide somewhere.
But she's over there talking to him.
And then Chino comes out and starts getting.
He goes, ah, he starts yelling at Jay.
Are you talking to my girl?
and all this and then they kind of get into a fight
and Chino starts
whooping up on Jay
gives him a few shots
but the Jay falls down, picks up and grabs
his board, wham! Hits Chino in the head
with his skateboard
and then takes off.
But Skip is all fucked up.
He's tried to walk up on top of him, but his muscle
pushes him out of the way, but Skip's just
that drunk, that angry drunk,
he grabs some of his surfboards, he runs
up onto the roof and starts throwing
him off the roof. Who wants a free
surfboard? He just starts just
throwing them and
I
assume they're this fragile
to just break from throwing them from a roof?
I don't know. I mean, I'm not a surfboard
I would try it to see
because he's just throwing boards
surfboard after surfboard
off the roof and some of his crew
are like, man, I'm out of here.
We won't see this kind of shit on the north shore.
So one of his shapers kind of bailes out.
but Tony sees it he rolls with Topper
Stacy's watching
and kind of just shaking his head
Jay already cut out already
so they're just like all right man
party's over
so we next scene we see we see Jay
kind of walking down the street
and then we see Topper and Tony roll up
in a convertible I think it was that Rolls Royce
Tony's driving and he's all suited up
and everything all GQed out
and then they're kind of like
hey man jay man why don't you come with us and jay's like no i'm all right and he goes come on man
tony's gonna make a lot of money but jay's like yeah nah you go do what you're gonna do so yeah jay
he was he was he was he was about surfing and skating and taking care of his mom that was all he
was about but he didn't want the the fame and fortune and all that he just wanted to keep it real
basically because yeah we we get the scene uh he goes back to his house his mom's
having this big party. This is when we see
the real Jay Adams. He's
in there. Yeah, he's a guy who gets
the six-pack too, right? Yeah, him.
And then we see Tony Alva.
He's sitting there talking
about growing weed in Oregon
to Jay's mom.
That's Tony Alva.
I think he had some kind of wig
or something on because Tony's
got dreads and everything.
But this is when we find out that
I guess
a friend of
Jay's uncle, some guy that does
advertising, and they wanted
Jay to do a commercial, slinky
commercial.
Basically wanted to sing the slinky jingle,
and they were going to pay him like 20 grand
or something like that.
He should have did that
and just got that much for a day's work,
but he
wasn't about,
that he was like
nah I'm not what you're looking for
so but his mom was kind of like
whoa my god that's a lot of money you should do it
but he was like nah I'm good
so he
he kind of just
gets out of there we
go back to the zephyr shop the next day
or I don't know and Stacy's clearing
out his locker skip comes in
and tries to tell him like look man
I'm gonna come up with this new thing
you're gonna be my skater
and we'll give you a
board with your name on it and we'll just crank it out Stacy Peralta and with Zephyr
on top of it but Stacy's kind of like you know what I'm thank you but I'm out of here
Stacy went with GNS so he knew that they were they were big company at the time I don't
think they're around anymore because I mean there's so many different skateboard companies
now but out of the big ones
vision is kind of there
they're still printing up old
reissues palperata
is still going well I think it's just Powell now
um
dog town
there's still
the red dog is still
um
uh has his shop
and but then again there's a bunch of other
small little companies I went to the
agenda trade show and
uh Santa Cruz was there
Powell was there
8th Street Tony
Magnetons's crew
They're still there
Real skateboards from
Straight Out the Bay
That's Tommy Guerrero and Jim
Thiebo
They got their real skateboards going
I started once
I found that they had their own company
Tony or
Tommy and Jim
Their bay skate rats like myself
I was supporting real
I was riding nothing but real skateboards
Now I'm just riding whatever I get my hands on
A lot of reissues.
Nottis is my guy, so he had a skateboard that came out on skateboard day.
And I'm riding that right now.
But yeah, this scene, Skip was trying to keep Stacy with him because he knew Stacy was good.
Pretty much everybody left.
The whole Zephyr team took off and went to other places.
Jay, he had a sponsor, but they didn't really say who it was.
it was a hawkeye and some other dude uh jeremy waygum
shay wiggum is like one of those guys you see in a bunch of movies yeah i've seen him in a bunch of
things but i like this scene because we see uh j and skip or j and um sid hanging out with
some essays and they're uh skating those big uh cement uh pipes i don't know where they are
in the middle of desert i guess i mean that would be hell of fun though skating this thing
just riding it back and forth.
So we see that Jay is just still about just skateboarding and living his life.
And Sid is still trying to just hang with him.
But we get a mon-
This is when Jay shaves his head?
No, no, not yet.
Oh, okay.
We get a montage of what Tony's doing,
skating for Topper, whatever company he is,
and hanging out with chicks.
And we see Stacy is doing,
he skates for GNS and they have him going
like all over the world to different places
this is when we get cameos from Christian Ossoi
Lance Mountain and Tony Hawk
he was
one of the astronauts
none of it was Neil Armstrong or one of them
so but so we get all that
and then we see Jay
just mobbing down this hill
doing this thing and then we kind of see him
go up on top of the old pier and just jump a skateboard right off into the water.
So he's just trying to do his thing.
And actually, you know, we go to somewhere, somewhere in Southern California,
and they have this big contest.
And all of them are in it.
Jay's there.
Tony's there.
Did the rest some of the other former Z-Z team.
Shogo, he's there.
talking to, I don't know who he was riding for,
somebody had some jersey,
I can't make out what that is.
But everyone's in basically like their,
their sponsor's uniform.
Stacey's all yellow with the GNS on his,
I don't know what Tony was.
It looked like he was some kind of stunt man
getting ready to shoot out of a cannon.
But we see Jay, him and Sid,
and Jay's just dressed up like how he's always dressed,
just t-shirts and his jeans or whatever and Sid is still hanging out with them and they start
talking about where's Tony at and he's like I haven't seen him and they were talking about
Stacy went to Australia for something and then Jay's kind of asked well how was the surf
and he goes uh I didn't uh I didn't get to surf and Jay's like you went all the way to Australia
and you didn't surf so jays I don't know I'm
lightly a little hating
but not
not that much I mean
because during this he
basically said he was only doing this to
to help his mom pay the rent
yeah
so but they they have this contest
yeah Tony shows up
and in this big limo or
Rolls Royce whatever it is
and everyone
screaming and hooting and hollering
and the contest is they ride
down this embankment and just basically
hit this transition and just do kick turns and come down.
It doesn't seem like much, but during this time, that was, that was a big gig.
That was the style that they skated.
Just going up and basically you just had, you could just go up and kick turn.
And that's what some of these guys were doing to get points.
But when you're just doing something simple like that, I mean, you had to have some kind of style in it.
So, I mean, these guys, they had style when they were.
doing it. Except for one guy.
Seems like he just rolled up and then rolled back down.
But, so,
but this is when they start doing it.
And then, uh, tone or, uh, Sids,
I'm not Sid.
Uh, Jay sponsors show up.
Uh, Jeremy Renner and that other dude.
What was the name?
Shea Wiggle and Jeremy Runner.
Yeah.
And they just kind of roll.
These guys who just had money and just tried to make a skateboard.
And they're kind of like,
man, he goes, yeah, he goes, all right, here.
They give Jay his board.
That was a giant board.
Yeah, that tail was thick, man.
It looked like it was two inches thick.
And he's like, this isn't the board I designed.
He's like, this wood is cheap.
And they basically tell them,
the board you want are a tad too expensive to sell.
And then he's like, how do you know until you sell it?
So Jay was just pissed off at them.
But they're basically telling them, hey, you don't know business.
So they start telling Jay, like, hey, man, just tell him, tell Jay what's up.
But Sid's kind of like, you guys aren't doing what you promised.
And then that one guy grabs Sid by the back of his neck and says, look, if it wasn't for you, if it wasn't for Jay, you wouldn't be here.
You're just some rich kid that can't skate or whatever they said to him.
Yeah, trying to play manager or something.
Yeah.
So he's kind of like, oh, he kind of walks off.
and he's like he starts pretending like his
call me, he's like, co-cade freaks
right there.
Somebody in the audience is like,
oh, yeah.
Sid was cool, man, I liked this character.
So yeah, they're kind of like, uh, all right,
whatever. So, yeah, they go back to the contest.
And, uh,
Jay almost pulls off a handplan that no one's ever seen.
I mean, if he had a lander that, he definitely would have won
this contest. So, but he, uh, he doesn't, uh, pull it
off. They also have those
leaping
contests when you're riding on your board, then you jump
over the bar or whatever.
I mean, and they had the cones,
zigzag through the cones.
They had that. But yeah,
when those guys are doing the ramp,
Jay went up there and did it, almost
pulled it off, but he
slipped when he, because he rolled
up and did like a handplant. And at that
time, they said they'd never seen that before.
so he kind of does his trip he gets his score but it's um not a very good score and jay just kind of like
you know what eff this i'm out so he kind of just walks off just abandons the contest and gives
his board to some kid in the audience but then uh tony he's getting his run and uh stase is kind of
goes well i guess it's uh you and i and tony's like no it's not it's me and then tony gets his run
and he makes it
and then Stacy gets his
and the other guy that they're battling
one of Stacy's
teammates
he
it was Tony Alba's fault
in this in this scene
because Tony dropped in
off that embankment
before the other guy
was done with his run
and then he just basically
head on
into the other dude
I think his name is Tony
no this not
Tom
um shit i can't remember the other guy's name yeah he was in that movie we did he was in grind
yeah that movie yeah he was that's the only thing i do of it so but yeah he rose he's he a real
skater i guess i don't know now i only seen him in grinding in this so i don't know but
when he runs into each other that other guy just kind of stumbles tony falls and jumps up and
runs at that dude throws his hammer out and goes you stupid val and then he punches that guy
but then that guy comes back bow with a straight shot to tony's right eye or left eye and then
tony just drops and he's holding his face and that guy the other guy leans over not the best you got
alva and then uh everyone comes and that guy just bails out so tony alva's out i think that was
it for the contest because uh his eyes uh pretty
rugged he had stitches and everything so but we see jay he's kind of just hanging out at the pier um there was a fire
at the pier and uh basically whatever was standing was was all on fire and he was or uh just smoking
he was just sitting there and then skip kind of comes up oh who's the guess you look who's here
and they start talking and then
This is when Jay kind of telling him, look, man, I'm sorry.
He goes, I left because I needed to help my mom pay the rent.
And Skip got it.
He's like, you know what?
I get it.
He goes, your mom's got to eat.
She's got to eat.
So he knew that he needed to take care of his mom.
So Skip kind of walks off.
After this scene, this is when we see Jay.
He goes into the bathroom and shaves his head.
And he really, that was really a meal's hair.
And he just shaved it all off.
But we see Tony at his house.
He's got an eye patch on.
And when he lifts it up, it's pretty gnarly.
His eyes all stitched up and swollen still.
But Topper shows up.
He's all faded.
Him and his muscle and his chicks.
Alexis Arquette.
Yeah.
Rest in peace.
She or he's like,
Topper's kind of like, come on, man.
We're going to Maui, man.
We're going to get you on some real.
waves and Tony's like, I can't go.
I got a, I got surgery in a few days.
And then Topper kind of just yells at him, T.A.
And then he kind of catches himself like, I love you, man.
I want you to come.
But then Tony's like, I can't go.
So I'm like, all right, man, I'll leave you a ticket at the airport.
So, all right, let's go.
So they kind of all take off.
Yeah, that's when Alexis, I guess she was all fucked up.
Because she's stumbling around and she goes to the Tony.
Are you a good pirate or a bad one?
And then tries to grab his nipple on his shirt and he just swats her hand away.
So they all get back into the Rose Royce and take off.
Tony's dad shows up because Tony's out there, he went and dug his board out of the closet and he's trying to get back on and escape.
But I assume one eye covered kind of throws his balance off so he wasn't really sure.
And his dad, he's like, he turns around like to his dad, I'm going to be a ditch digger.
And his dad basically told him, like, knock that shit off.
He goes, you can be whatever you want.
You can just remember, you're an alpha.
So he's like, all right.
So next scene we see Stacy and his girlfriend, they show up at the beach.
And they're looking at the water.
And then all of a sudden this, it looks like an Impala rolls up.
And somebody throws a bottle out.
And Stacy is like, all right, come on, let's go.
so they start going.
He's about to get into his car.
And one of the dudes like, hey, who are you?
And he goes, you looking at me?
Yeah, you're looking at me?
He goes, lots of nice watch.
And he goes, you do want it?
And then he looked like he was going to get into it.
But then Jay jumps out of the back of the car.
And Stacy's like, oh, my God, thank you so much.
He gives Jay a hug.
We could see Jay's tweaking on something.
Yeah, his eyes are crazy.
Yeah, and he's like, yeah, what's up, bro?
He's just like, I don't know, snorting something.
But then he's like, he goes, I didn't see you at the whatever contest.
And he's like, I'm not really skating for money much.
So, but he's with Kathy and that other chick.
Stacey.
Oh, no.
The hell's her name.
I can't remember.
Kathy and Nikki Reed and her friend.
And this is when they tell, they tell Stacy that Sid is sick.
and Stacey's kind of like,
well, he's always been sick.
He's got that inner ear thing.
And they said, no, they found out
that it was a brain tumor
and he's got cancer.
So he's kind of like,
oh, and then they're like,
hey, we're all going to go see him tomorrow.
And Stacey's like,
I can't.
I'm going to wherever,
Australia or something.
And then Jay's kind of like,
we're not going over there.
We're not going to see him like that.
But they're like, all right, well, Stacey's girl,
like, oh, here's my girlfriend.
And then Kathy's kind of just looking at it.
Like, all right.
So they ended up leaving, Jay and them take off.
I don't know if this must have been a flash forward
because we see Sid, or we go to the Zephyr shop,
and we see that somebody else owns it.
And it's all nice and yuppie and everything.
Yeah, the guy that was,
in the store earlier in the movie with no money is the guy that bought the store.
Oh, that was him?
Yeah.
But Kep Skip Skip, because he's a good shaper.
We see him in the back, in the back room, uh, sanding, uh, a surfboard.
So we see that he's still making boards.
He's still out of Zephyr shop.
And then we go to Sid's house.
Uh, Jay's there.
He goes up and Sid's sitting in a wheelchair.
and he had
he had surgery
because he got this big scar
incision on the side of his head all stitched up
and he's looking at it
and he goes let me see so he kind of well he sees
Sid sees the
the little zipper tattoo
on the top of Jay's head
because Jay is bald now
but then Sid goes up
mine's real and then he shows him
his scar and everything
and I like Jay he kind of leans into him
gives him the horn
because it's pretty punk rock bro so they're kind of like oh cool so they're sitting there talking and then um
uh what's his name uh sid lights up because uh i guess his doctor prescribes uh weed to him because uh his
maid brings it to him so he lights well his maid lights it up for him and then he kind of gets it and he
looks at j and goes look man i heard you're sick too so uh gives him a rip off of it and then stacey shows up
and he's just he's just happy to see sid he kind of walks up on him and gives him a hug
and then they kind of like hey man he goes aren't your sponsor is going to be mad because he was supposed
to go to florida and he goes up i guess i missed my flight and so they're kind of like ah cool but jay
i think at this time we do see that they none of them are skating together anymore
they're all just doing their own things
So,
Sid's kind of like,
Hey,
guys,
I want you guys to come back here.
I want to show you something.
So they go back to the backyard
and they go to the pool
and it's empty.
But then he's like,
look,
guys.
He goes,
there's a Mexican in my pool
and he's not pushing along more.
And it's Tony.
He's down there sweeping up the bottom.
And then Sid's just looking at him.
Well,
Tony kind of comes up and like,
what's up,
guys?
Like,
nothing happened.
because but they're all kind of little especially jays a little standoffish he's kind of like just
i don't know if he was on anything because his hands were just really shaking
but they're they kind of like ah what's up man and he's just looking at it what's up with the zipper
and jay doesn't say anything so sid kind of basically telling what are you guys waiting for
my dad said we can thrash it so they're like fuck it so they all get their they have their boards
there and they jump in and just
just have a awesome session
because this pool looks huge
yeah um
this this pool reminded me of the
uh I had mentioned a old
abandoned uh country club
the pool was shaped just like this
and it was huge
you could get plenty of speed
and just fucking rip
as long as you want because no one was
no one could see us down there
so we just got to skate it and skate it and
skate it and hellful showed up of this pool man these guys are in there just ripping it up and
this part did bring some tears on my eyes because it reminded me and me and my friends uh we all start
off with one one at a time but then later as we're all warmed up like fuck it you go then i'll go
because these guys all start chasing one another in the pool all skating it at the same time
this is when they were uh using the computer to impose the
actors faces on the guys that were skating and they didn't do a good job but the guy that
portrayed a jay that was really skating this during the the making of this uh it looks like he did a
front side and the board kind of got away from him and he fell and broke his leg when they
were filming this scene but we see these guys man they're just ripping it jays tearing it up
front side and over the light and then he goes around the the stairs
in the shallow end.
But then they kind of look up at Sid and they're like,
hey man, let's get him in here.
Because Sid's sitting there in his wheelchair.
And then they get him into the pool and they're pushing him around.
Which was cool, man.
This also puts some tears on my eyes.
I mean, Sid, again, I don't know how true this was.
Was this their buddy that they hung out with?
Or was it just someone they made a character for in the movie?
But in the documentary, they do mention that there was a kid with brain cancer that they let him skate their pool.
Maybe they didn't say his name out of respect for his family or something.
Yeah.
So they put Sid down in the deep end and these guys are just skating around them.
And I'm sure it was awesome for Sid just to see his boys together again.
After all the beef and everything that was going, they're all going through.
through, but he was there to see his buddy skate and he was there having a good time.
So I thought that was really cool.
And while they're doing down there, that's when they start pushing Sid.
They're pushing his wheelchair up the transition.
And then his maid comes and starts yelling at them in Spanish, especially calling them idiots.
What are you guys doing?
So he started speaking Spanish back to her and then he asked for some more weed.
So I guess he gave it to him.
but then we get
some uh this is the end of the film
it says Sid's father kept the pool
empty for months
allowing the boys to skate as much as they wanted
because Sid ended up
passing away from his brain cancer
and then they go into other things
it says Tony Alva went to become
skateboarding's first world champion
he runs Alva skates and sells his products
around the world
and what else is to say
dude he just did a badass front side air out of front he still sneaks in the backyards to skate empty pools
i asked him that one when i saw him when i met him he was yeah man i do it whenever i can whenever we
find them pools and they're showing stacey and he's doing a huge front side grind stacey peralta
created the skateboard company pal paralta and the bones were bones brigade which included a 14-year-old
Tony Hawk. He is now an award-winning filmmaker.
Jay Adams
is recognized as a spark that ignited the sport,
the original speed.
That's another magazine. Released on parole for drug-related charges,
he continued to skate and charge the big waves of Hawaii.
Jay Adams is no longer with us.
He passed away in 2014.
I believe
Let me see
Adams died of a heart attack on August 15th
2014
In Priordo
Escondido
I don't know where that is
A tourist resort near San Pablo
And I guess in Mexico somewhere
But yeah he
He passed away
I guess just
From the life
I mean
your body can only take so much
whatever. I don't know if he was using or anything.
Maybe just
his
his heart just was tired.
I don't know. But I do remember
hearing that he passed and I was like, oh man.
Shortly after the dog bowl session,
Sid died of brain cancer.
But they did get to skate
that spot
until Sid passed.
And that's the
