Starting point is 00:00:07 Good Tuesday morning, guys. My name is Jerry Miller, and this is the Jerry and Jerry show. Thank you kindly for watching the most viewed and listened to UVA sports program out there, period, bar none. This is the water cooler of anything cavalier sports related, and we encourage you, the viewer and listener, to chime in on the discussion, ask us questions, shape the show with your thoughts and perspective. A lot to cover on the program. Folks, we have Transfer Portal news, breaking news. You will hear it first on the Jerry and Jerry show. Ryan Odom has now secured a commitment from an Arkansas State Guard, a 6-foot-6 scorer. Christian Harmon has committed to Virginia. Hootie will have that breaking news for you. Even more significant than that may be the news that Baylor transferred James Nanji,
Starting point is 00:01:03 who is 7 foot 265 pounds. was drafted in 2023 as the number 31 pick into the association. He's on grounds in Charlestville right now being romanced, whined, and dined by Ryan Odom's staff. This looks like a potential UGO replacement. We will talk about that on the program today. We also have men's lacrosse. They won the 20th ACC championship in program history this past weekend.
Starting point is 00:01:35 UVA men's lacrosse is the number five seat in the ACE in the NCAA tournament. They host Georgetown on Sunday here in Charlottesville. What a story it would be if Mens LaCross makes it to Final Four weekend, which is here at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville. We'll talk softball, we'll talk baseball, we'll talk tennis, we'll talk golf. You got Chandler Morris at rookie minicamp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jamari Taylor with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Goodness, gracious, Gali O'Malley.
Starting point is 00:02:11 There is a lot to cover from a UVA sports fan. We encourage you, the viewer, and listener, to subscribe to Jerry Rackliff.com. It's $8 a month. There is no media platform publishing, editing, creating, writing, analyzing, offering commentary on UVA sports like jerry rackliff.com. two stories a day, 40 stories a month, fresh pieces of content, podcasts, commentary, analysis. Jerry Rackliff.com is the market leader.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Join the nearly 1,000 subscribers at jerryrackliff.com for the best and brightest of UVA sports coverage, ladies and gentlemen. Judah Wickhauer is behind the camera. Yeah, we want to thank those thousand people because, And, you know, off to a good start. We weren't sure how this was going to go when we went behind the paywall. Now we're, you know, what, eight weeks? We are, I just counted ten weeks in. Ten weeks?
Starting point is 00:03:18 Yeah. Not bad. Not bad. Not bad. Renee Petterford is watching the program. She absolutely loves the website. And I woke up so, so very excited for today's Jerry and Jerry show. Renee Petterford, we're going to rank you number one in the Jerry and Jerry family.
Starting point is 00:03:32 She's got to be. She's got to be number one in the family. I would think so. Is it in the triangle of North Carolina? Yeah, Durham, I believe. Durham's finest, Renee Pettifert. We appreciate you too. We start the program, goodness gracious, where do we begin?
Starting point is 00:03:47 I just throw it to Hootie, a scatter shooting, and let him figure it out. I'm just the point card that passes the ball to the star, and he has to figure out a way to win the game here, Hootie. No pressure. Well, you know, everybody's been sitting on pins and needles, waiting on something to happen in a transfer portal and after they landed their first guy, Mackay White, or no, excuse me, that's not right. Mackay White's the kid that they're looking at for the future.
Starting point is 00:04:20 Jury and Dixon from UC Irvine, not long ago, we're going to be doing some stuff on him before the week's over. Big West freshman of the year But, you know, a little silence since then But today's a huge splash with One guy committing and another guy on campus Or on grounds The commitment, as you pointed out, 6-6
Starting point is 00:04:47 I guess he could call him a wing Christian Harmon from Arkansas State led the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game, 3.7 rebounds. He was third team all Sunbelt conference. He actually averaged 15 points a game in the Sunbelt play, shot 39% from 3. And he played his first two years at Gulf Coast State College,
Starting point is 00:05:22 where he shot, as a sophomore, shot 47% from three. This guy's a score. It's clear what Ryan Odom saw in him as another guy who can launch it. And then comes the news of James Noggi. Mountain of a man. I know. This guy's in Adonis.
Starting point is 00:05:45 Seven foot 265. This guy makes Ugo look small. And that's hard to do because Ugo is one of the biggest people I've seen around in a while. um what we say he played in 18 games with baylor he came in late in the season right around christmas around christmas uh was an NBA draft choice and played in the NBA summer league 23 um I mean you know when you look to see what Ryan Odom had to add to the roster he's headed in that direction he's got two guards two shooters and possibly a replacement for Hugo to back up and share time with Grunlow at the five spot.
Starting point is 00:06:34 So I know this team could be better than last year. On paper, this team right now is better than last year. Well, yeah, well, for nothing else because the guys that they got coming back have played together for them. There it is. And they're going to be working together this summer. Actually know each other. Yeah. They know their names.
Starting point is 00:06:55 We've seen one of the, I can't divulge who it is or anything like that, but there's one guy that I know of that's working out with another player, and I saw his workout routine what he's working on during the summer, and it's a load. I mean, these guys are working hard to become better than they were a year ago, and that's trouble for everybody in the ACC, see if these guys get better. The Virginia men's basketball team is Ryan Odom, just trust the process.
Starting point is 00:07:32 Everybody was wondering, hey, what's going on with the transfer portal just because we're impatient fans? You know, it takes time. It takes time. It takes time. There's a lot of people out. I mean, there's still a thousand probably players in the portal and a lot of good players. You just got to find the right, guys, or the right fit for your program.
Starting point is 00:07:49 So let's see how this shakes out. You got a point guard and chance Mallory. you got a three in Sam Lewis, you got a four and De Ritter and a five in Grunlow. That are your starters. Yeah. Do you think the jury in Dixon is your starting two guard? I would say probably so. He's six foot four.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Yeah. UC Irvins. Irvine. Yeah. So here's your jury and Dixon, the first commitment, it's probably you're starting two guard. then the kid that commits, which is breaking news, Christian Harmon, is your come off the bench, instant offense. He could probably play two or three.
Starting point is 00:08:36 He's like your Jacari White type. Yeah. Except he's taller than Jacari White. Six, six, six, and longer. Now you got your Ugo if the Baylor kid commits, and I'm not putting the cart before the horse. the Baylor kid James is it Nanji Nagy
Starting point is 00:08:54 Nagy I mean on paper I'm just saying strictly on paper this guy is more of a basketball player professional than Hugo because he was drafted where Hugo he's probably not the shot blocker that Hugo is
Starting point is 00:09:16 but not that he's not that he's not a shot blocker he probably's not at that level of shot blocking, but his overall game might be better. Overall game is better. Seven foot, 265 pounds. The guy, I'm looking at a picture of this guy, this guy's arms are the, I swear to God, the size of my torso. I mean, it's like, Hooty, I'm going to turn it around and show it to you, so you see it here. In fact, I'll even, look at, look at this, this is ridiculous. Ooh.
Starting point is 00:09:50 Massive. He's absolutely massive right here. Tree trunks for arms. Seven foot 265 pounds. This guy is also, he's 22 years old. He's about to turn 22. Yeah. I mean, you're talking about a man here playing college basketball that played in the Euro League.
Starting point is 00:10:09 So there'll be three of those guys on the roster that played in European, yeah. Professional basketball. Granlo de Ritter and this guy, if he commits. If he commits, yeah. If unbelievable. What's happening here? I mean, put it into perspective here. I mean, it's just
Starting point is 00:10:25 2,025 team 2.0. I mean, it could be an upgrade. And that's hard to think of because they were so good last year. But, you know, assuming that they can get this guy. And there's no, you shouldn't probably assume that because he may, who knows what other kind of offers he has at this point. But should they pull that off, I mean, they're going to be, again, solid at every position on the floor with depth. And Ryan Odom was the first one to admit that the depth was the huge thing last year
Starting point is 00:11:10 because he could play his style of basketball for 40 minutes and put in fresh guys and with no drop-off. not many teams can do that. I'm sure that losing Tennessee in the second round of the tournament left a bitter taste in their mouth. Tennessee was a pretty good basketball team, but they at least
Starting point is 00:11:40 got a chance to measure where they stood nationally with some of the programs out there and what they have to do to reach a higher level this coming season. Renee Pedford. Mark Brown, Renee Peders watching on my Facebook page. This show airs, by the way,
Starting point is 00:11:59 on 27 distinct and individual social media pages and accounts and platforms and podcasting platforms, folks. 27. Mark Brown is watching on the Jerry Rackleff page. Renee Petterford is watching on my page. Mark Brown says,
Starting point is 00:12:15 I absolutely love this show. He says lacrosse has had the biggest improvement of any UVA team I've ever seen within the season, how it started, how it's at right now. And then he says, tell Renee Peddeford, this is Mark Brown talking. Tell Renee Peddeford, I'm coming for her number one spot in the Jerry and Jerry Show family. All right. We'll get some competition. Mark Brown, you're certainly a top five member of the Jerry and Jerry Show. We appreciate your viewership and listenership.
Starting point is 00:12:44 We'll talk lacrosse. In fact, the Virginia Sports Hall of Famer, Jerry Rackleaf, the household name across the Atlantic Coast Conference, has a conversation lined up with Lars Tiffany later today. Yeah, this afternoon, we're talking to Lars and over at the McHugh Center and the Harrison Sports Center or whatever you call that. And it'll be interesting to just hear him talking about the upcoming game with Georgetown and what they've done. I mean, it's remarkable what they've done. They were three and four at one point, and now they're 10 and six, and have beaten some really good teams in putting together this recent streak. And, yeah, they're two games away from playing at Scott Stadium in the national semifinals and finals.
Starting point is 00:13:41 And what a scene that could be. if Virginia makes it to that level of the competition. We haven't seen lacrosse and Scott. Well, they played a game there this year, but back in the day when I first got here, they played all their games at Scott Stadium, and they had some pretty good crowds back in those days. I can imagine what I've covered a few national championships in lacrosse.
Starting point is 00:14:15 The most memorable, I think, was 2006. That may be the best lacrosse team ever. Those guys just blew everybody away. And that was up in Philadelphia, the football stadium, the Eagles Stadium, and that place was rowdy. I mean, there were tons of people in that football stadium. So I imagine they're going to draw a heck of a crowd to Scott Stadium. Viewers and listeners, you should take a step back and appreciate this.
Starting point is 00:14:53 Because I think, and there's no better man to ask this question to or ask this question of, are we in the midst of the best overall campaign sports season, start to finish, fall through spring, and UVA sports history? It could end up that way. Like the best one in history here. Yeah, yeah. I think I was doing a little research last night and there's three or four other years
Starting point is 00:15:21 that rank really high. And so if they pull off some more successes in the spring, this could be it. I think it was it 15? I can't remember what year it was. It might have been 15 that they had three national championships in the spring. And I think it was soccer, baseball, and maybe tennis.
Starting point is 00:15:52 I mean, I can't remember. I was looking up a bunch of seasons like that. But yeah, this is on the cusp of possibly being the best season ever. And it was springboarded by football and basketball, having the success they had, which has been minus in a couple of, other of those years. And 100%. And it's no coincidence.
Starting point is 00:16:18 It's coinciding with NIL money. Yeah. Would you agree? Yeah. No question. Yeah. Fueled the whole thing. Because they got the alumni.
Starting point is 00:16:28 Yeah. They got the base. Yeah. And a lot of schools just don't have that. They don't have that. It's, I, I was, I'm changing my tune here on the NIL. That the NIL may be tailor made to, to, to, for UVA. It's probably the best thing that's happened to UVA Athletics.
Starting point is 00:16:47 There it is. It's the exact opposite, and I'm not trying to throw shade here. It's the exact opposite of what it's doing to Virginia Tech. Yeah, I mean, it is. And I think, and not just tech. There's a lot of schools. A lot of schools. Don't have as a fluent and powerful financial alumni.
Starting point is 00:17:13 base to throw that kind of money on a program. And somebody said, but I can't remember who it was that was quoted a few years ago. But they said, if things keep headed in this direction, if Virginia wants to be, they can be the New York Yankees of college athletics. If they want to be. If they want to be. And I think there's a want for that because what's happened is Virginia is getting a taste of it. And the taste was the 2025, 2026 season, football and men's basketball in particular, and that taste is becoming an addiction.
Starting point is 00:17:51 It could very well be. I mean, there's just been so many positives. It's hard to think of too many bad things that have happened. Even the women's basketball team, which blew up in the postseason or after the postseason with the firing of the coach. even it had a successful run in the tournament. So as negative as it turned out to be, it was overall a positive. The comments are coming in.
Starting point is 00:18:26 Viewers and listeners, put your comments in the feed. We'll relay them live on air. This comment's coming from Jacksonville, Florida. You're telling me this team has a chance of getting a center that's better than you go and he's on grounds right now in Charlottesville.
Starting point is 00:18:39 Is that what you're saying? That's what we're saying. That's what we're saying. That's what we're saying. And it's happening while the breaking news just hit that they secured a commitment through the portal from an Arkansas State 2 slash 3. We'll call him a wing. That's probably the best use of what he is. A 6'4.6 Sam Lewis prototype, at least on paper.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Yeah, absolutely. Christian Harmon that we mentioned earlier from Arkansas State, average about 13 points a game. shot 39% from 3, and after shooting 47% from 3 as a sophomore. So he's definitely a guy who can light it up if he gets it going. He averaged 15 points a game against Sunbelt competition last season. He was third team all Sunbelt as a junior, I guess. So, yeah, he's the kind of guy of the, they're looking for.
Starting point is 00:19:42 I mean, Ryan Odom's like, Ryan Odom likes offense and he likes shooters, and he's got a horde of them. No question about it. I'll tell you who's licking his chops right now is Chance Mallory. Yeah, I mean. To be Chance Mallory with this roster? Who are you going to pass it to?
Starting point is 00:20:00 He's got a problem that every point guard wants. He's got too many people to pass it to. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, he can't go wrong. He can't go wrong. I mean, you got Chance Mallory. You can pass it to the. the post, you can pass it to DeRitter. You can pass it to Sam Lewis who can do, he's a three level
Starting point is 00:20:16 score, Sam Lewis. This Christian Harmon kid I'm really excited about. The jury in Dixon kid is I'm really, really excited about. And let's not forget, Grunlow, who I would imagine is going to put on in the offseason, he's going to work on putting weight on the frame. I'd like to see what his diet is. Grunlos? Yeah, I would hope he's eating a whole lot of cheeseburger. I would hope to guy. Yeah, I would have a lot of protein. A lot of the muscle milk shakes and steaks. If Grunlow puts on weight and he develops two or three additional moves to complement what he can already do in the post, I mean, his three-point shot was there.
Starting point is 00:20:53 He's not going to have a busted hand to start the season. At least we hope not. I mean, Grunlow's upside is ridiculous. Exactly. And you don't want him too bulky because you don't want to take away his fluidity. His fluidity, yeah. But he could still use some muscle to hold his own in the post. Yeah. I mean, the guy gets up and down the floor extremely well.
Starting point is 00:21:13 That's what struck me about Yugo. There were times when Yugo was running the floor. I'm like, this guy looks like an effing track star. Yeah, he could move. He could move. And no surprise. This is on Jerry Rackleff.com. It's a Jerry Rackleaf exclusive. If you're not subscribing to Jerry Rackleff.com at $8 a month, you're missing the best UVA sports content possible, period, bar none. Ugo has been invited to NBA draft combine. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:38 Put that in perspective. Yeah, I mean, I think that's huge. There's a lot of people, well, Ryan Odom, I asked Ryan Odom during the season. I said, what do you think, who goes ceiling is? And he said, NBA. Yeah. He said it on this show. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:58 And he confirmed what we thought is that he's an NBA player. And there's some people that aren't convinced of that. but with his ability to move, which as you pointed out, and his shot blocking skill, and he can score around the basket. He can be the pick and roll guy that comes off the bench.
Starting point is 00:22:19 Absolutely. And his entire job is to pick and roll, take the oop, finish at the rack, rebound, flush it, and then play good defense. Yeah. And give them 12 to 18 minutes a game. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:33 That's a career. Even 10 to 12 minutes again. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, he could become a really wealthy man. Extremely wealthy man, just doing those things right there. Exactly. And that's a backup center.
Starting point is 00:22:43 And have a long career. Right. You stay healthy doing that. Pick and roll set good picks, be able to finish or flush an oop or pick up the trash around the rack. And then shop lock? Yeah. That's a 15-year career. You just got to be with the right organization?
Starting point is 00:22:59 100%. Where you fit their style of play. And then be a good team guy in the locker room? And he is that. And he's that. he's a genuine guy. One of the most likable guys out there. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:23:12 Is Hugo. So Ugo's at the draft combine trying to make a name for himself as Jerry Rackleff reports at Jerry Rackcliffe.com. The men's basketball teams got the attention of the 20, the 27 number one ranked point guard hoody. You're reporting on Jerry Rackleaf.com. Yeah. And I have that in front of me if you want me to give the who, where, Why? Yeah, I've got my notes here.
Starting point is 00:23:38 Okay. I've got so many notes. I have to figure out what page here. Yeah, that Beckham Black, the kid from Orlando, plays for Southeastern Prep. He's already got, I think he had 21 offers when I wrote that. I think he's got about three or four more already. He's a 20-27.
Starting point is 00:24:08 top, one of the top point guards in the country, and he's already been offered by, again, well over 20 schools. The number one point guard in the country in his class, he's from originally from Duncanville, Texas, and ended up at southeastern prep. He's in Orlando because his older brother, Anthony Black, is a wing for the Orlando Magic. And so he's a 6-3-185 star.
Starting point is 00:24:43 He's been offered by Virginia, Miami, Kentucky, Southern Cal, Georgetown, North Carolina, Arkansas. I imagine some of the other power programs will be after him pretty soon. Hoots, I'm a die-hard Detroit Pistons fan. Yeah. I love the Detroit Pistons. I just watched the Pistons play a heavyweight. seven-game playoff battle
Starting point is 00:25:10 against the Orlando Magic. The Pistons were lucky to advance to the second round. They play the Cleveland Cavaliers. Black,
Starting point is 00:25:18 the kid for the Orlando Magic, the older brother of this kid, is a baller. Yeah. He was a key contributor in that series.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Yeah, I've heard good things about him, for sure. So, I mean, he comes from good stock,
Starting point is 00:25:35 that's for sure. family that can play hoops. But that kid is, and another kid that they are looking at as Mackay White that I mentioned earlier for City Rocks basketball up in upstate New York, Albany. The number one prospect at point guard in his class, which is the 20th. class, he might even be better than the other kid. He's 6'175. He's 16 years old, and he's
Starting point is 00:26:17 just looking at the video of him, he's unbelievable. He was averaging 26 points per game a year ago. And so goodness knows what he's going to do, the future but he's had offers from Virginia Louisville Indiana Maryland Northwestern Stanford VCU Villanova Syracuse Auburn five-star composite guy playing in one of the premier EYBL circuit programs in the country at city rocks up there they rarely take anybody outside the state of New York. And this kid plays for Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.
Starting point is 00:27:14 He's a New Jersey native and played for St. Benedict's in New York, or excuse me, Newark, before he made the transfer to up his game and play on a more national program. But, I mean, there's two incredible prospects that they're, and who knows if they can land either one of those guys, but that's the kind of guys they're going after, and that's what they're going to have to do if they want to be the kind of national program that Ryan Odom foresees. Virginia basketball is red hot.
Starting point is 00:27:47 God, we haven't even talked about football. We haven't even talked about Chandler Morrison the Bucks rookie minicam. Jamari Taylor with the Jacksonville Jackuars bin-camp. We haven't even talked about Tony Elliott in a contract extension and a pay-bop. We haven't really even highlighted men's lacrosse, baseball, softball.
Starting point is 00:28:02 This guy's got conversations with the baseball, with the softball coach, with the men's tennis coach on the near horizon? Yeah, we're going to have a podcast with Andres Padrosa. I like him a lot. I do too. He's a terrific guy. I heard through the grapevine that they're on the cusp of endowing that team. And he just signed a new contract.
Starting point is 00:28:21 He did. The endowment would be a way for the men's tennis team to insulate itself from kind of these macro trends where we saw Arkansas dissolve and disappear. it's men's tennis team. If it gets this endowment in place, which they're trying to do, it would literally fund itself. Yeah, you can't beat that. You can't beat that.
Starting point is 00:28:44 So it would never be in that camp that the athletic department, these other teams are huge losers from a financial standpoint. Right. If it's sustaining itself. Exactly. And I mean, when Brian Bowlin built this program, and Pedrosa was his assistant for a while, and I'm sure that it was only natural to go after him to replace bowling.
Starting point is 00:29:10 And he hasn't skipped a beat. I mean, this program is as good as it gets. And they had a huge crowd for that round of tennis last year over at Boershead. Fantastic facility. I know they would love to have another huge crowd this weekend. the women play there this weekend as well. And then the men, I think,
Starting point is 00:29:37 there's so many games going on. This past weekend, my... I think it's Friday and Saturday this week. I think the women played Friday. The men play Saturday. Let me see if I can find it. This past weekend, the women played Washington. I went there with our two sons.
Starting point is 00:29:53 Yeah. And watching tennis. It was perfect day for tennis. This weekend, I think, it's supposed to be nice. It's just an absolute abundance of riches. to watch college tennis. 100%.
Starting point is 00:30:05 Because all the courts are right in front of you. I've been to some of the top tennis facilities in the country. The one at Georgia, they used to host the national championship all the time. I didn't like it because you could only see like four courts. Well, they had the other two over to the side, so you couldn't keep track of all six matches. That was Snyder. When I was working for you at the newspaper,
Starting point is 00:30:35 on a cover on the tennis beat, you'd watch one match. And the other matches, the other courts were kind of stacked behind each other. Right. Where here at Borset, as you've highlighted, they're next to each other.
Starting point is 00:30:48 So you can set in the middle of the bleachers and literally watch like four matches. It's pretty awesome. It is. Really is. Virginia, I have the only reason, you know,
Starting point is 00:30:57 the reason I know this is I queued it up in front of me here. I'm going to the team schedule, the men schedule. schedule here. They got an NCAA super regional. You were right on Friday against South Carolina at the Borset, five o'clock. They got a counter three days, six hours, and six minutes from, it's not for, what was it from the start, let's say the start of the match here. No tip off for first pitch there with tennis. So super regional South Carolina, Virginia is the number five ranked team in the country against number 13 South Carolina Super Regional Hoots.
Starting point is 00:31:38 Then you got the women's team, which I'm going to go and check out their schedule. The women's tennis team, is it also South Carolina? I should know this. The women's tennis team is playing against... Are they playing LSU? LSU, you're right. On Saturday in the Super Regional. The women's team plays number two.
Starting point is 00:32:02 10 LSU Saturday 1 p.m. at a super regional. They cooked number 22, Washington for love and the regional in the second round. Yeah. I was at home. Good God, Hootie. You got home lacrosse on Sunday. You got Holmes men's tennis on Friday. Home women's tennis on Saturday.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Softball is the ACC tournament is, I think it's, is it Wednesday? starts Wednesday or Thursday. I can't remember. But they play multiple days, obviously. And then the baseball is here against California. So if you're bored, if you're looking for something to do,
Starting point is 00:32:47 there's something to do almost every day or every night. You cannot be bored, ladies and gentlemen, this weekend if you're a Virginia sports fan. Women's softball is absolutely red-hot. They got Pittsburgh tomorrow
Starting point is 00:33:02 at home. And then they got as Houdi highlighted the NCAA regional Thursday through Sunday of next week for softball. I mean, goodness gracious, this team has a chance to win the
Starting point is 00:33:18 Directors Cup standings. Yeah. And that's huge. That was always the goal for Craig Littlepage. Stanford was usually and still a huge contender. I think Stanford might be Stanford? Well, no, I think North Carolina's leading this year.
Starting point is 00:33:36 They were after the winter sports. But Stanford has dominated that competition for years. And Virginia wanted to be the Stanford of the East, and they pretty much accomplished that goal. Viewers, enlisters, let us know your thoughts, put them in the feed. This one, you guys got it 100%. They're asking about the Elliott contract. You mentioned the Tony Elliott contract, Jerry.
Starting point is 00:33:59 What's the details? Jerry Rackliff.com, if you want to Tony, Elliott contract scoop. You want to give him a tease, let him know what's going on? Yeah, I think he got a bump. I think it's about a million dollars a year, I think. I think it's 5.4. I think it was 4.4 or something before.
Starting point is 00:34:19 And it made perfect sense not only to reward him for an 11-win season, which had never been done at Virginia before, but say he goes out and has another really terrific season this year. Be on the short list for the best jobs in the country. Then, yeah, there's a whole bunch of ADs. They're going to be coming after him. So it ties him down through 2030 to Virginia. And I think it's the right thing to do, a smart thing to do,
Starting point is 00:35:01 because you reward a guy for doing something great in your own program, solidifying your program, keeping it hot, building it. He's been through some stuff here too. And going through hells at some points, just to try to keep things normal. And protecting your program by keeping your coach, tied to your program through 2030 when a lot of these contracts
Starting point is 00:35:38 around the country run out. So I think it was a good move on the Virginia's part. And he's in folks, you're starting to see some talent come out of Virginia that's intriguing NFL front offices. How about Chandler Morris and a Bucks rookie minicamp? Yeah, I mean, It's going to be tough.
Starting point is 00:36:03 Baker Mayfield obviously has that job tied down, and they have another guy that they have as the designated backup that came from the Bengals. But Morris and another guy, they drafted from Kansas, or didn't draft, but signed as a free agent from Kansas. They'll both be going to the minicamp this week, rookie minicamp this weekend, to kind of just show the coaching staff what they have. And, you know, they'll be fighting for that number three quarterback job,
Starting point is 00:36:43 if not number two, depending on how well they perform. And, you know, I like his odds of the fact that he's so smart. He's learned so many offensive systems in his career. I think he told me he worked essentially worked for five or six different offensive coordinators I mean what Oklahoma
Starting point is 00:37:09 TCUCU North Texas North Texas UVA and his dad's an offensive coordinator Yeah I think there was maybe a switch or two In there along the way So that And you know he's
Starting point is 00:37:24 I mean he has to be at a 5 foot 10 He's essentially about the same size as Mayfield, and neither one of those guys have what you would call in the NFL as a strong arm, maybe a strong arm for college, and they're both mobile and can run. So he fits that system that Tampa Bay runs. So I would think he would have a good shot at,
Starting point is 00:37:53 if nothing else, we can practice squad. Comments continue to come in. This is from Martinsville. Virginia. Good morning, J&J. Congrats to Jade Hilton on a great softball career. First time and the entire time and no shade at all. This is me talking and then I'll get back to Donald's comments. First time in my entire time covering UVA sports, working alongside you,
Starting point is 00:38:21 I've seen softball with so much buzz. Yeah. And I love it. I think so, yeah. I absolutely love it. They were just not very good for a long time, and they've turned that around. And they were reaping the fruits of their labor, so to speak. Exactly, exactly.
Starting point is 00:38:42 He says, do you think academics have dropped somewhat since NIL money came into play? I don't think so. I think, you know, I talk to a lot of these guys that are coming here with NIL money or one of the attractions was the academics because a lot of these guys are grad students and they're working on their
Starting point is 00:39:09 you know furthering their education with the masters and I know a lot of them take it very seriously and a lot of these guys are pretty smart because they know that even if they make it to the next level, that it's not going to last forever.
Starting point is 00:39:33 And they don't want to end up like so many of the sad stories we've seen over years where guys were in it at some schools that don't take education seriously. Turn into a cliche. Yeah, they get in the NFL or the NBA, they blow their money. Their playing days are over early, sometimes because of an injury or just competition
Starting point is 00:39:58 and they've got nowhere to go and no future. We've seen some really sad stories over time about that. So I really don't think so, at least not here. Maybe at some places where education is kind of a joke, but not here.
Starting point is 00:40:23 I mean, these guys, I've talked to a lot of of them and they're very serious about their education. Comments continue to come in here on the Jerry and Jerry show. Viewers and listeners, we absolutely love your comments on the feed. Cliff Daisy watching the program. Hey, Cliff. We love you, Cliff. Good morning, Jets.
Starting point is 00:40:43 Basketball news this morning makes me wonder what was privately known by the people changing the John Paul Jones season ticket prices and investment that we discussed months ago, wondering who could afford the tickets. At this rate, I'm suspecting people will be lined up to pay the new prices. Hope you are well. I absolutely love this show. There's a breaking point coming where good players start coming to our doors, wanting to play here instead of being sought out by our staff, and that point might be upon us. So Cliff Scott, he's in the eastern shore, multiple points here, he says, we all wondered about the new seating arrangement where there was now pay even more to get your seats. And he's like, Looks like those people that rolled out that plan were exactly right, because success breeds fans that can afford these type of prices. Well, you know, it happens everywhere. Afflegged departments all over the country are strapped financially, and even though they're looking at every conceivable way to enhance their funding. it's most most programs in the country are
Starting point is 00:41:55 in the red we've seen so many reports come up lately and that's why some schools are choosing to drop some of their sports and why other schools are making the push for
Starting point is 00:42:09 fully endowed programs you see that with squash yeah the squash program on UVA so they're not I don't
Starting point is 00:42:20 I don't don't think they're doing it to screw their fans. They're just doing it to try to survive. And again, it's not just Virginia. It's every school in the country. If they haven't done it yet, they're going to have to do it. I mean, Arkansas dropped up. It's tough.
Starting point is 00:42:37 I agree. It's tough because, you know, a lot of people can't afford that, particularly in this $4. Gas. Economical time that we're going through. Where groceries are high. Everything's high. Everything's high.
Starting point is 00:42:53 And, you know, that's a luxury, and some people can afford it, and some people can. Unfortunately, it's probably going to price some really loyal fans out of the thing. But if you're running in an athletic department and you're looking to squeeze every dollar you can, I mean, that's your job. You've got to support. It costs a lot of money. money to run these programs. It's facilities.
Starting point is 00:43:27 Guys, the only programs that actually travel are in the black are football and men's basketball. Men's basketball is barely in the black, folks. Yeah. We're talking like a couple of, and I'm not trying to like marginalize a couple million dollars, but just a couple of million dollars here for men's basketball.
Starting point is 00:43:44 And that's with all the TV money and the conference money and everything else that comes in. And so... Football is carrying the athletic department. And that's the way it is. It's the engine that drives the train everywhere. So that's why you saw when the team was really struggling in Elliott's first few years, where to start his career at UVA, he had the least amount of wins of any coach in power football.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Yeah. Over a handful of years. When the seats were not even half full, what that was doing to the athletic department's, bottom line. Yeah. And a lot of people still go back to the early 2000s when they did that with a football program. My parents got caught up in that. I don't know if it was the same scenario then as it is now because I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:39 I think the athletic department was probably in better shape back then and maybe they were being a little greedy. But, and that displaced a lot of... a lot of loyal fans and they lost them for life. I don't think this is the same scenario as it was back then. I think this is something that they just had to do. And I don't think that they really wanted to do it, but I think they were kind of forced into it
Starting point is 00:45:09 because it's just they've got to get the money from somewhere, particularly now with NIL. And, I mean, programs are having to come up with more money now than ever before, and it costs a lot of money. You look at all the support staff that all these programs have, the travel, the salaries, the upkeep, it's staggering. And we've seen official reports from NC State and North Carolina and several other schools that have revealed their athletic budgets
Starting point is 00:45:49 and everybody's bleeding money. I think it was Louisville's women's basketball was like $4 million in the red. And they draw people. They actually draw a lot of people to the women's games. But it's getting just so expensive to run athletic programs and athletic departments that it makes you wonder what's going to happen in the end
Starting point is 00:46:16 if it can keep going to keep going, this. I don't know. I don't have the answer. That's for sure. That's why we're seeing the venture capital firms and private equity. That's becoming a big trend now. That's a real trend. And the venture capital firms and the private equity getting into college sports, I mean, it's so early to tell here, that's a scary proposition. Because when private equity and venture capital gets into anything, it's only the bottom line. And it's do more with less. Was it the Big 12 that you signed the big deal where they have essentially an open bank account for, I don't know how many millions of dollars for each program, maybe 25 or 30 million or maybe something like that.
Starting point is 00:47:06 It's an open check. Yeah, and that's scary. Yeah, it is scary. Because you don't know what, you don't know what, you know, what comes from that, what sacrifices have to be made. When you've got some folks that are not really tied to the conference, the Big 12 in Redbird Capital, the Big 12 conference is groundbreaking partnership with college athletic solutions,
Starting point is 00:47:32 introduced to league-wide private capital arrangement and the first one in NCAA history. 12.5 million capital infusion to the conference, 30 million capital facility. I have to get into these details, but I would encourage the viewers and listeners to check this out. That could be the future of what college sports turns into. A 30 million opt-in for schools. I mean, it's... Yeah, we're not far from seeing corporate names on jerseys.
Starting point is 00:48:01 That's going to happen. Yeah, that's going to happen. It's going to happen soon. All kinds of stuff like that. And the new Michigan football coach is Kyle Whittingham, right? Yeah. He said the other day that, beginning, I don't know if it's beginning with the 27 recruiting class or ending with the 27 recruiting class,
Starting point is 00:48:26 that he expects the really power players in college football to have $50 million rosters. 50 million. I mean, we're close to that now. Well. We're going to at 25 to 30. Probably, yeah, probably somewhere around there. that's a that's massive that's a ton of money that's crazy i mean it's it's to the point where if you're an NFL or NBA player and you're you're considering do i go into an NFL draft maybe make
Starting point is 00:49:03 a back end of a roster or do i stay in college sports as long as possible and this is happening well look you know look at Chandler morris yeah i mean he wanted to come back he was making at least a million a year. Yeah. With Tampa Bay, he signed probably a $275,000 contract. He's making less. $25,000 signing bonus. So that's not even a third of what he was making here.
Starting point is 00:49:30 That's right. Chandler Morris is making two-thirds less. And he was an undrafted for you, age. To play in the NFL. I mean, that's that right there, is it? I mean, that's a story right there. goodness gracious hoots what is your weekend going to entail this weekend no sleep I know where are you what is what is most intriguing to you this weekend
Starting point is 00:49:56 wow that's the toughest question I asked you today I don't know I haven't even thought about it I've just been trying to figure out how I'm going to do it but um and Greg Waters will probably be covering the the baseball force against Kyle, but that might be the, well, that's one of the intriguing stories because the baseball team can still work some magic, I think, if they get hot at the end. And I think a lot of people are waiting to see if that's going to happen. I guess maybe the most intriguing story is the men's lacrosse team because of how they've turned it around and what the possibilities that lie ahead for that team is.
Starting point is 00:50:46 I mean, they were kind of left for dead early in the season. Their offense was not clicking the way they wanted it to. They were, uh, Jake Merrick was not having, uh, he was kind of having a rocky start in goal. Now that guy, he is as solid as they get now. He was the ACC MVP. he's been one of the massive keys in turning that program around. One of the most impressive stats I've seen in any sport this month is the fact that
Starting point is 00:51:24 Virginia is 8 and 2 when Merrick has double-digit saves. That's pretty impressive. That's pretty impressive. He had 10 saves at halftime against Carolina in the championship game. that's just an amazing story to me how they've turned it around because a lot of people just had kind of written off the men's the cross team and people were saying what's wrong with this program
Starting point is 00:51:54 obviously nothing now because they're riding high men's lacrosse softball golf tennis men's and women's tennis baseball Tony Elliott contract extension pay bump basketball transfer portal nil goodness gracious folks goodness gracious look at what's happened at uva sports um jerry rackliff dot com is the source right everything we're trying to keep up with all of it it's it's not easy but uh eight dollars a month hoody tell them why well you know we appreciate everybody who has subscribed and we ask you to tell your friends and neighbors
