Starting point is 00:00:00 Good Tuesday morning, guys. My name is Jerry Miller. Thank you kindly for joining us on the Jerry and Jerry Show. We are live in downtown Charlottesville, less than two miles from Scott Stadium in the John Paul Jones Arena, a program that airs across all social media channels and wherever you get your podcasting content. Today's program will highlight the week that was a tough loss to the Maryland Terrapins in Scott Stadium on national television. Costly, Calandria, miscues, doomed Virginia football in week three. We'll look inside the
Starting point is 00:00:41 box score. We'll ask questions about the offensive line and the protection it is offering or perhaps not offering a second-year quarterback. We'll ask the question, ladies and gentlemen, what is going on with a wide receiver with a lot of upside in Chris Tyree? We'll pick apart the defensive backs. They certainly were picked apart on Saturday evening by visiting Maryland, and we'll discuss the margin of error for Virginia football as it plays Coastal Carolina and has Boston College on the near horizon. Virginia, a three-point favorite against Coastal, the over-under at 54 and change. A lot to cover on the week three, week four edition
Starting point is 00:01:19 of the Jerry and Jerry Show in the 2024 ACC season. Judah Wickauer, studio camera, then a two-shot as we welcome the star of our program, a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer, a man who needs no introduction, known in households across the Eastern Seaboard, his namesake website, jerryracliff.com. Hootie, you were in the press box
Starting point is 00:01:39 the first half and the second half, a tale of two different stories. My friend, the show is yours. Precisely correct, my friend. And it's the second week in a row that they've stumbled coming out of the locker room at halftime, which is a big deal. I mean, they have generated nothing offensively in the third quarter for two consecutive weeks. Last week at Wake Forest, they found some magic and were able to come back and dramatically win the game.
Starting point is 00:02:17 And this time there was no magic. There was nothing there. The fourth quarter was just a continuation of the third. I think Maryland is the best football team that they've faced so far, but it was certainly a winnable game. And early mistakes, as you pointed out, by Calandria and other people, contributed heavily. They had so many trips to the red zone and just kept getting field goals.
Starting point is 00:02:43 It's hard to beat anybody doing that. But they've got a major problem coming out at halftime, and that's something that they've got to correct going forward or it's going to be tough to win another game. Significant problem. Some have highlighted that could be tied to adjustments made at intermission. Maybe we talk about that later in the program. We hate to discuss this from an Anthony Calandria, costly miscue standpoint,
Starting point is 00:03:11 but he plays the position that gets the attention, that gets the praise, and also is heaped upon when the team struggles. A fumble when he really wasn't securing the football with two hands the right way. Two interceptions that, frankly, had me nostalgic of Maryland 2023. Yeah. Where mistakes doomed Virginia against the Terrapins. I guess we've got to start with the quarterback here, Hootie Ratcliffe. Yeah, no question.
Starting point is 00:03:38 He made a lot of unforced errors, and, I mean, it cost them big time. They could have had a healthy lead, an even healthier lead at halftime than what they did. And they just simply blew it. I mean, they did some good things too, but it's like last year, all the good things were negated by the negatives. And then some.
Starting point is 00:04:08 And then some. And you just can't turn the ball over like that, because you know a game like most ACC games are going to come down to a handful of plays. They're so tight. The team that makes the fewest mistakes usually wins, and even though it's not an ACC opponent,
Starting point is 00:04:29 it's a former ACC opponent. Kind of the same caliber as most of the teams in the ACC, but he just made some critical errors, and it was you're putting yourself in a hole, just like he did a lot last year.
Starting point is 00:04:52 All those great numbers don't mean anything if you're turning the ball over, and that's another problem that they've got to solve. I think they will. I think probably nobody hurt I think he probably nobody hurt more over those things than he did. That's the kind of kid he is. I mean,
Starting point is 00:05:13 what do you want to do? Some people were calling for Musket to come into the game, but I didn't think that was going to happen. They're going to ride Calandria until he proves otherwise. And I don't think he'll keep making these kind of mistakes.
Starting point is 00:05:33 I think he's a kid that usually learns from his mistakes. But he just had a bad game, and that's going to happen from time to time. But they dug themselves into a hole and then couldn't come out of it because of the third-quarter blues is what I've been calling it. I don't know. I can't figure it out. They just get totally dominated in the third quarter on both sides of the field. Calandra leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in interceptions.
Starting point is 00:06:08 He's got four. I'm still on top of the Calandra bandwagon. I think Calandra, three plays, I understand three plays can change the course of a game, and against Maryland, three plays did. The fumble in the red zone, extremely costly. The second pick, very concerning. The first pick as well.
Starting point is 00:06:34 I will highlight he's running for his life still with the offensive line. The pass protection is not there. That's something that we need to highlight. I will also highlight that the running game could be a bit stronger. We've seen flashes with the running game from Xavier Brown, and Kobe Pace got 11 carries for 46, so they try to commit to Pace. Still no tailback truly making a significant impact here. A buck 23 in totality for the team on the ground.
Starting point is 00:07:02 What do you make of the fan base with the musket calls? Justified something being considered, or is that something still on the back burner? I think it's on the back burner. I think they're going to ride with Calandria. He won the job. He's performed well in the first two games. I mean, we talked about this in the preseason.
Starting point is 00:07:26 You know, he's his style of play. He's going to make some mistakes because he's a playmaker, and you don't want to take that element away from his game. But, you know, he really has to cut down on those. He was making better decisions. I think he'd like to have a couple of those back. Against Maryland, he reverted back in some ways to the Calandra of 2023. With Richmond and Wake Forest, we saw a more measured Calandra.
Starting point is 00:07:58 Yeah, I mean, he had a couple of picks at Wake too. Those were more good plays by the Wake defensive backs and linemen than it really was him making horrible throws. I think he made some bad throws in this game. That's something that he has
Starting point is 00:08:18 to correct going forward. I think he's still the guy and I would stay invested in him because i think he's got good days ahead uh depending on where you shop virginia three-point favorite against coastal carolina the over under 54 and a half it's a 2 p.m kick on saturday it's one of those weird channels it's on espn plus so prepare yourself viewers and listeners this This is not part of the everyday television or streaming package for a lot of people out there. Offensive line, Hootie, we knew it was a point of concern coming in.
Starting point is 00:08:52 I saw a second-year quarterback running for his life, especially when he was looking to throw the football. True. Oh, and if you can't get ESPN Plus, you can always follow the game on my Twitter account. There we go. I had people in Vancouver, Seville, Spain, and somewhere else, New Hampshire or Vermont somewhere. On the live stream. Checking the game through my Twitter. I love it.
Starting point is 00:09:21 Yeah, the offensive line has still got some issues. We weren't quite sure what they were going to be like this year, even though everybody returned. They still have a lot to prove. They're still not 100% healthy there. Brian Stevens is nicked up every now and then. Mikael Boley still hasn't recovered from his ankle yet. And I think he's been day to day.
Starting point is 00:09:51 But you also have to consider that he's not in game shape because he's missed so much time. So there's some issues on that offensive line that they're going to have to correct. They do have a bye week after this game, so that will give them a little bit of time to heal prior to a homestand against Boston College and Louisville. In the meantime, Calandria is going to have to find ways to overcome the fact that he's going to be under
Starting point is 00:10:29 pressure. And he's usually pretty decent under pressure and moves well out of the pocket when he has to. But it's just reality. And when you don't have a solid offensive line from week to week, it puts a lot of pressure on your quarterback, which puts pressure on your running game and your passing game. And right now, things are out of sync. Viewers and listeners, let us know your thoughts. We'll relay them live on air. Comments are coming in.
Starting point is 00:11:00 I'll get to those in a matter of moments. I need to highlight the defensive backs. Virginia's got two very, very good safeties, experienced safeties. Jonas Sanker is my personal favorite guy on the football team, the Covenant school graduate, who is sideline to sideline. His counterpart, I believe a six-year, which is unbelievable to say as a safety. Quarterbacks, we saw this against Maryland, are not targeting the center of the field with passing attempts. They're going after the defensive backs on the sidelines where there is not the talent with the DBs and certainly not the experience with the DBs.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Maryland had a field day with this. Let's talk defensive backs and what needs to happen, what kind of protection could be offered. Do you shade the safeties over more? Maryland's star wide receiver looked like Jerry Rice out there. Trying to pay a little props over to my man Hootie Rack with the 49ers fan. That guy is good. I mean, he led the nation come into the game, and we saw why.
Starting point is 00:12:04 I mean, he's a solid receiver. He's got size and good hands, runs good routes, has good speed. We figured they were probably going to have trouble with him, and they did. But the Virginia secondary leaves a little bit to be desired, particularly in the corners. And, you know, that's one of the most highly sought-after positions in recruiting, not only in college football, but even in the NFL. If you don't have good corners, I mean, quarterback corners, a rush in, a left tackle,
Starting point is 00:12:42 those are the premier gets in recruiting. And Virginia's had a tough time in recent years landing good cornerbacks, and I think that's a bit of an issue this year. They're giving up a lot of stuff. First half, I thought they did a pretty good job on the pass defense. Maryland receivers were catching the ball, but there was somebody right on them as soon as they caught it, and they were getting no yards after contact.
Starting point is 00:13:19 That was a different story in the second half as those guys were able to break away and get a lot of yards and make some big plays. And that's another problem that they're going to have to try to correct. And it's not like you can go out and get new corners. They got to coach up the guys they have. And I don't know what else you do, really. Those guys just have to do their jobs better.
Starting point is 00:13:46 Viewers and listeners, let us know your thoughts. This comment comes in. It was an email sent to us before the program. Please bring this up with Hootie. The margin of error for Virginia football is so slim, and when mistakes happen like Calandria's fumble in the red zone, Virginia's not going to be able to recover. Ask Hootie how the margin of error can widen or improve.
Starting point is 00:14:07 It's a good question. Well, it is a good question and exactly right. I mean, we all knew going into the season that their margin of error was going to be like a tightrope. We've heard Tony Bennett talk about that with his basketball team in some cases over the years, but that's definitely true for this football team as it was the last couple of years. Even though they have a little more depth this year, they're still down in the talent pool as opposed to most of the teams that they're going up against. This program has been down and it's hard to
Starting point is 00:14:52 overcome that in just one season or one recruiting class. So there is a margin of error that's very thin. I mean from from my standpoint, how you improve that margin of error is you figure out how to run the football. And if you run the football, you control the clock, and you take a lot of pressure off a guy who is somewhat mistake-prone and Anthony Calandria who's lacking some game experience. This team seems like if it can find a way to run the football, it takes pressure off the quarterback, it protects the football,
Starting point is 00:15:25 it keeps the defense rested. And Kobe Pace and Xavier Brown seem to be a fantastic change of pace, almost, you know, it's the old cliche, thunder and lightning. Yeah. I mean, I would love to 18 carries for 89 yards for those guys.
Starting point is 00:15:43 That's what's so-so. And not a lot in the second half. And barely anything in the second half. Yeah, well, you know, it goes back to the, again, to the offensive line, and I don't want to throw everything on them because sometimes
Starting point is 00:15:58 other guys are making mistakes and they get blamed for it, but generally, this offensive line hasn't been able to control the line of scrimmage. They did against Richmond, but Richmond was an inferior team. They were fairly evenly matched against Wake Forest, I think. I don't think they were. I think they were manhandled a little bit by Maryland's big physical linemen on both sides of the football.
Starting point is 00:16:29 And they were unable to move those guys and open holes. They did some. I thought Xavier Brown had some really nice runs. I think he's their best back. Me too. We keep hearing that it's Noah Vaughn, that Noah Vaughn's the most complete back. And we saw him for the first time, had a few carries in this game. But Xavier Brown has impressed me.
Starting point is 00:16:56 I think he runs with more speed. He's got that giddy up. He does. And I think he may end up being the starter before the season's over because pace is being given the opportunity. And while he's doing an okay job, he's not doing, you know, what it takes to make that a dominant run game. And, again, part of it's not his fault.
Starting point is 00:17:23 But until they can get that straightened out, Jerry, I don't know because you're right. That is a way to erase some of that margin of error. But therein lies the problem. Are they good enough to do so? And right now they don't seem to be. They should be able to be more dominant, I think, this week against Coastal Carolina, an FCS team.
Starting point is 00:17:54 But it's a good FCS team. Coastal Carolina is a good team. They are. But I still think Virginia probably has overall more talent and probably has an edge on at least the offensive line, maybe the defensive line as well. I mean, fourth game of the season, this is not hyperbole or exaggeration. This is a must-win game for Virginia. Oh, every game is now.
Starting point is 00:18:23 Going 2-0 was great unless you lay an egg in game three, and so that puts you behind the eight ball again. And for this team that's trying to win five or six games, every game. Vegas had it at what, three and a half? Every game was huge. Vegas had the line at what, three and a half? For this week? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:42 No, no, no, three and a half for the wins on the season. Was it three and a half or three and a half for this week yeah no no three and a half for the wins on the season was it three and a half or four and a half uh i think it was three and a half three and a half yeah right yeah and we thought they would win four or five right maybe six if they could pull off an upset somewhere um and right now i mean i was looking at, I guess it's ESPN's metrics. I don't know that they're favored to win another game this year, but their best chance. They're favored against Coastal. Against Coastal.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Yeah. They're a three-point favorite, and I think the metrics had them as a 47% chance of winning that game. Yeah, 45% chance, which is their best chance of all their games remaining, according to those metrics. They had a 33% chance of beating games remaining according to those metrics. They had a 33% chance of beating Maryland according to those metrics. 45% Carolina and then less than 40% chance for any other game the rest of the season. They have a 37% chance against Carolina, Pitt Pitt and SMU. So that shows you what the odds are and how things are stacked up against this football team. We knew going in it wasn't going to be easy.
Starting point is 00:20:15 All six of their six first games, all of those games are winnable. But you've got to play, like said it's such a thin margin of error you've got to play almost flawless football flawless football to be able to do that yeah and and folks we we did not anticipate any no one anticipated prior to the season start that boston college would be as good as boston college was i watched boston college play missouri i watched most of that ballgame. B.C. at Missouri. You're talking a top three team in the nation.
Starting point is 00:20:50 And Boston College had Missouri on the ropes. And Boston College probably should have beat Missouri in their house. Missouri turned it on in the second half and had a fortuitous bounce or two go their way. But Boston College looks like the real deal here. Virginia's got BC, ladies and gentlemen, after the bye week. After Coastal Carolina, it goes bye week, then BC, then Louisville. Louisville's undefeated.
Starting point is 00:21:17 Pittsburgh's undefeated at 3-0 right now. Clemson, don't sneeze at one-on-one Clemson. Clemson's got talent all over the football field. I get that they're one-on-one, but this is a very good ball club. North Carolina's 3-0. Notre Dame is going to be playing, like, every game's the last game of the season after an early loss, an upset type of loss. And then you've got SMU virginia tech with the hokies
Starting point is 00:21:45 at with the calves hitting lane stadium i mean this is this is uh this this coastal game is critical oh no question about it they they have to win this game and and i think they should uh again not throwing shade on coastal they're a really good football team they're three and oh um they haven't really played any high-powered teams yet and um but this is going to be kind of like a super bowl for them kind of like the james madison game was for the Dukes last season here. This is only the second Power Five team that's ever been to Conway, South Carolina. BYU was there in 2020, but that was the COVID year, so there was hardly anybody in the stadium. But this game has been sold out, I think, for two weeks,
Starting point is 00:22:42 their coach said yesterday on the teleconference and the excitement is through the roof to have an ACC team come to town and he said the tickets are really hard to come by so I don't know what size stadium they have there
Starting point is 00:22:59 I don't think it's very big I drove and passed it once several years ago but it's a big. I've driven past it once several years ago. But it's a big deal to have an ACC team come to your town. I mean, even for East Carolina. And they're right there. And they have been playing football for a long time. Coastal hasn't been around that long.
Starting point is 00:23:23 So for Virginia to be coming to town, it's a really big deal. I mean, that town is lit up right now waiting for the Cavaliers. And their guys are champing at the bit, hoping that they can pull off an upset and show people that they can beat an ACC football team. Wahoo 89 watching on YouTube. He said, if the University of Virginia had a good running game, that they can beat an ACC football team. Wahoo 89 watching on YouTube. He said, if the University of Virginia had a good running game, then when Calandria has an off game, it would not be as bad.
Starting point is 00:23:51 When is the last time UVA had a 1,000-yard rusher? Way too long. Way too long. I think Jordan Ellis was the last 1,000-yard rusher, but it still wasn't a really good running football team. But they've produced very few thousand yard rushers and since uh the early al grow years when they had guys like alvin pyramid and wally lundy and uh some of the guys of that ilk where they still had nfl caliber running backs and nfl caliber offense alignment and as well yeah and and right now they uh Brian
Starting point is 00:24:27 Stevens is a NFL caliber lineman but I'm not sure anyone else anyone else on that offensive line is at this at least not at this point of their career Wahoo 89 also highlights the outgrow era and the last time they had a decent rushing attack um Speaking of the run, and we'll get off topic, one more on this, the run game. You look at what Calandri had to do against Wake Forest where he threw the ball 43 times, I believe, if memory serves correct. He threw the ball 37 times against Maryland. It almost seems like, and I understand
Starting point is 00:25:06 Fields is a talent, the wide receiver from Monticello High School. I understand this tight end looks like he's got a lot of upside. Is he, what, a transfer from Harvard? Yeah. I think he was probably a guy that was getting some NFL looks when
Starting point is 00:25:21 he was at Harvard. Yeah. This guy has clearly got some big time upside. He's got an incredible story as well, some of the hardships he's gone off the field. True. I understand that Trell Harris looks like he's super talented. You know, we still haven't seen Chris Tyree. It's a question I've got to throw to you.
Starting point is 00:25:39 What's going on with Tyree? They try to get him involved. The TD was called back because of a flag. That's a shame because we saw a glimpse of what he is. Yeah, it ran everybody. Oh, yeah. If he catches the ball and he's got nobody within a couple yards, nobody's going to run this guy down.
Starting point is 00:26:01 He's blazing speed. Blazing speed. But have you noticed, though, with the punt returns, he is extremely quick to fair catch. Yeah, and I haven't paid a lot of attention to that, but it may be they're telling him to not take any chances at this point in a tight game. I don't know, but, man, maybe the punts are just, maybe they're not returnable.
Starting point is 00:26:31 I don't know. But certainly he has no fear. We've seen that in him. But I think he's going to be okay. It's a shame that that was called back. Nine catches for 44 yards, a 4.9 average for Chris Tyree through three games. Certainly not what we expected from him. But, you know, they're not getting the ball to him that much either.
Starting point is 00:26:57 And I don't know if they're using him as a decoy or if people are double teaming him or what. I might have to pay closer attention to that. But I still think he's going to be all right and will make an impact on this football team. It's just taking more time than we expected. But they've got plenty of other guys that can catch the football. And they broke in Cam Courtney, the talented true freshman in the last game. He had a couple of nice catches. He looks good.
Starting point is 00:27:31 So I don't think that's going to be a problem going forward. The problem is trying to establish a running game and trying to get Calandria to get a little pressure off of him and hopefully that he'll learn from his mistakes and cut down on those. He's throwing the ball a lot because he has to, because teams are making them somewhat one-dimensional, and they're playing from behind in the second half a lot. So a lot of times coaches will abandon the run to some degree,
Starting point is 00:28:02 if not totally, and just throw the ball to try to get back in it. Cam, Courtney, guys, is a guy with some upside. 5'10", a buck 93, a first year from Manassas, Virginia. We've talked Margin of Era. We've talked Chris Tyree. We've talked the defensive backs. Clearly, your strengths are at wide receiver, tight end, the safety position, and you have some talent on the front side of the ball and the defensive side as well.
Starting point is 00:28:28 Virginia's got Coastal Carolina in what clearly is a must-win ballgame for Virginia. Three-point favorite, 54.5 the over-under, 2 p.m. Saturday on ESPN+. If you don't get it, hop on over to Hootie Ratcliffe, Jerry Ratcliffe's Twitter account. He does a fantastic job of live streaming. Keys to Victory Against Coastal. What is that, the Chanticleers? Chanticleers. What is a Chanticleer?
Starting point is 00:28:53 It's a rooster, I believe. It's a rooster? Yeah. Okay, the Chanticleers. But, yeah, pretty cool nickname. They have cool colors, that ocean blue that they have. And it's a nice football program they have going down there. I know they're excited to have Virginia in town.
Starting point is 00:29:15 They were supposed to play Virginia a couple years ago, but that was one of the games sacrificed after the slayings of three Virginia football players so it didn't get played. I don't know. I have a look at the future schedule to see if they have a return game to replace that one or not. But it's pretty cool that Virginia is going down there and it should be a great environment, a very electric environment,
Starting point is 00:29:49 because their fans are going to be jacked up. I don't know how many Virginia fans will make the trip, probably not that many. But, I mean, it's a big deal to them. They would love to pull off the upset. It would be another feather in the cap for a Sunbelt team. The Sunbelt is producing some pretty good football teams, no question about it. But it is a must win for Virginia because there's not a lot of games you can point to on the schedule that they're going to be favored in.
Starting point is 00:30:25 And so they have to get every one that they possibly can. You know, some people think that they will win three or four games. And if that's the case, then Tony Elliott will probably be on the hot seat. I thought they would win between four and six, depending on how things go. If Tony Elliott finishes with three wins for the third straight year. Oh, that's going to be tough. Yeah. That's going to be tough. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:59 But, you know, they should be good enough to win more than that. They've got enough talent, even though it doesn't stack up against a lot of ACC teams because of the portal and because of some of these guys returning for fifth and sixth years, even seven years, they have enough talent to win that many games. They've just got to play better, and they can't afford to come out. That's a real problem when you're coming out of the locker room at halftime, and your main goal is to establish momentum. They were getting the ball back. They got the ball back, received the kickoff in the second half, and you can't do anything with it.
Starting point is 00:31:48 You lose all the momentum you had right off the bat. They highlighted that. You were watching in the press box. I was watching in the comforts of my couch and the big screen. Exactly what you said was highlighted in the broadcast. They said on the broadcast, the air has been completely taken out of this stadium because of that stalled drive.
Starting point is 00:32:09 No question. And you just can't allow that to happen. I mean, that's one of the big things in football. And Tony Elliott talks about winning the middle eight. That's the last four minutes of the first half, the first four minutes of the second half. And they haven't been doing that. They didn't do it against Wake.
Starting point is 00:32:29 They didn't do it against Maryland. No, I mean, they were outscored 20 to nothing in the second half. And they only crossed midfield, I think, once in the second half. And that's, I mean, that speaks volumes right there. You just, you can't do that and expect to to win a football game and the third quarter is so crucial you you don't have to win it but you can't lose it and and they've been getting killed in the third quarter they haven't been able to stop the other offense and they haven't been able to generate any offense and uh it would suck
Starting point is 00:33:07 the air out of a stadium and and out of your football team and it's it's a focus i mean it's just so hard to wait until the fourth quarter you're putting so much pressure on yourself trying to get it all done in one quarter of football and you don't get that many possessions unless you get turnovers and they're not getting any turnovers 23 to 7 virginia's been outscored in the third quarter through three games this even this season 23 to 7 10 and nothing against wake 10 and nothing against maryland they did outscore the Spiders. That's a huge number. Yeah, it's a huge number. It's a huge number. Some of the doubters are highlighting adjustments in coaching in the locker room for what's happening in the third quarter.
Starting point is 00:33:53 I'm not going to go that far yet, but it's a trend we've got to follow, certainly. We had a similar conversation happen last year coming out of the locker room. We're not going to go down that road yet. A lot I want to cover with Hootie Ratcliffe on the program here at the 1107 marker. We got Virginia Tech topping ODU. A lot of folks are asking how good are the Hokies. We have Boston College looks fantastic. Their quarterback looks absolutely
Starting point is 00:34:26 fantastic. I watched them take Missouri quarter to quarter. They should have probably won that ball game, but top three team in the country at Missouri. Pittsburgh looks all right. Louisville looks all right. Syracuse's quarterback looks pretty damn good.
Starting point is 00:34:42 Florida State's the Florida State head coach on the chopping block right now? Most certainly. And the irony of this all, and I'll get out of your way, is this the, this is the team that was raising the ruckus in the summer about suing the ACC and wanting out of the conference. And now the conference is saying, karma's a you know what? Yeah, well, they were 13 and one last year. Right. And got left out of the playoffs. I still thought under the circumstances they were not one of the best four teams in the country. But, yeah, Mike Norville might have been on the hot seat,
Starting point is 00:35:22 except they signed him to an eight-year, $85 million contract in the offseason. So if they fire him, they're going to have to pay him $65 million. I know Florida State is griping that they don't have enough money to be where they want to be, but they certainly haven't proven anything. They're 0-3 for only the third time in program history. The first time was when Bobby Bowden came in here in 76, his first year in the program. Mike Norville has had two 0-3 starts in the last four years,
Starting point is 00:35:58 so he has to own it. And losing it home to your old team, Memphis, certainly didn't instill a lot of confidence in their fan base. I saw some of that game, and their stands looked really empty in portions, which is really bad because that place seats about 90,000 people. Florida State definitely got some issues. I don't know who they play this week, but I'm not sure it's anybody easy.
Starting point is 00:36:32 If I recall, I seem like I heard. I'll let you know right here in one second. Florida State's being outscored 72-46 so far in the season. Cal, they have Cal and Tallahassee. And Cal just upset Auburn on the road two weeks ago. I've seen a little bit of Cal. I was through writing late Saturday night and I watched some of the Cal game.
Starting point is 00:36:58 They look pretty good. I think Cal has more talent than they were given credit for in the preseason. They've got some players. That late start, unless you're diehard college football fans like us on the East Coast, I mean, that game probably ended close to 1 a.m. Oh, I'm sure. Because we're talking, what was kickoff, 10-15? Probably.
Starting point is 00:37:23 Yeah. Unbelievable. Yeah. Unbelievable. Yeah. I've covered some games out there that started that late. So it's, yeah, it's no fun if you're a player in the east and have to go out there. Right. If you're an east coast player. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:38 With the cross country trip. And then the late start. Yeah. It's hard to get accustomed to those hours. I mean, that's home field advantage. Oh, no question about it. Now, the reverse is cows making that trip as well. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:53 Across the country to the east coast and having to do the same. But at least it's not past your bed. Now, granted, these are 18, 19, 20-year-old kids here. Well, yeah. Yeah, they're staying up late. But you see the point I'm making. Playing it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:04 And hanging out. Touche. Touche. You see the point I'm making. Playing and hanging out. Touche. Absolutely touche. You're right. Cal's 3-0. I think it's easier for West teams to come East than the East to go West. 100%.
Starting point is 00:38:17 I think the NFL has proven that over the years. Boston College, I agree. I think they're better than people thought they would be and bill o'brien is a solid football coach i mean he's coached the houston texans he was on nick saban's staff he's uh i think he was on belichick's staff at some point uh he was down at georgia tech a long time ago, back in the mid-'90s. Yeah, mid-'90s, I believe, on that staff they had down there. So that guy's a solid coach,
Starting point is 00:38:54 and he's going to make them a good program if they can hold on to him. He may take off for the NFL again, but I don't know. But Boston College is no gimme, that's for sure. I'll throw these to you here. Louisville could be sneaky good again. Last year we didn't think they were going to be that good. You just read my mind. In the ACC championship.
Starting point is 00:39:16 You just literally read my mind. I was literally going to highlight about Louisville, not a team to overlook. Louisville's unblemished. I'm going to give you the unblemished teams here, Hootie. You got Syracuse at 2-0, 1-0 in conference play. Guess what? Great quarterback play with Syracuse.
Starting point is 00:39:33 Pitt's 3-0. Duke is 3-0. North Carolina's 3-0, and they're playing with their backup quarterback. Now, granted, this quarterback's got starter experience. Miami's 3-0. That looks like the best football team to me, but I'm going to ask the pro, Hootie Rackliff. Cal is 3-0. quarterback. Now that granted this quarterback's got starter experience. Miami's three and oh, that looks like the best football team to me, but I'm going to ask the pro Hootie Rackliff. Cal is three and oh. Louisville is two and oh. Of the unblemished teams, Louisville, Cal, Miami,
Starting point is 00:40:06 UNC, Duke, Pitt, and Q's, who's the best? Probably Miami right now, I think. 159 to 26 points for, points against. The best margin in the conference. They still have some things to prove, but they have a good quarterback in Cam Ward, and everybody thought he was going to be really good. A lot of people picked him as the ACC preseason player of the year. I'm not sold on Carolina or Duke yet. I don't think they've really beaten anybody of consequence. Syracuse is wait and see, but I think they are better than they were in the past. Louisville,
Starting point is 00:40:42 it's hard to get a gauge on Louisville because they have so many transfers in and out each season. It's hard to get a read on them until further down the road. Boston College has certainly improved. Pitt, that was a good win over West Virginia. West Virginia is usually a pretty decent team. Rivalry game. Really good. Yeah, backyard, that was a good win over West Virginia. West Virginia is usually a pretty decent team. Rivalry game. Really good, yeah, backyard brawl. Pitt usually has, I mean, West Virginia usually has a really high-scoring offense.
Starting point is 00:41:15 So Pitt is sometimes sneaky good. We'll wait and see on them a little bit, but I think they're a decent football team. He's had a solid program there for quite a while now. Week four, God, it's flying by, on the near horizon. We've covered UVA and Coastal. Other games to watch, we'll highlight here in a matter of moments. I'll rattle off some other games to watch in week four.
Starting point is 00:41:46 Other storylines you're following so far through three games in the Atlantic Coast Conference? We're not sure about the Hokies yet. They're 2-1. They're 2-1. They struggled out of the gate, but I think we're going to have to wait and see on them when they play a more high-profile program. I still think Clemson might be the best team in the ACC. We haven't seen a whole lot of them at this point,
Starting point is 00:42:20 but the one loss they had was a really bad second half against the number one team in the country, so you can't throw too much shade on them at this point, but we'll see about them as we go along. I don't think there's a lot of, at least right out of the gate, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of teams in the conference that's going to test them. So they still, I think, if I had to lay a bet right now on who was going to win the ACC, I think I would still put it on Clemson. I'd be hard to argue against you there. Maybe Miami, but I'd probably take Clemson as well.
Starting point is 00:42:59 James Madison, North Carolina, 12 o'clock kick. Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech and Louisville. Ladies and gentlemen, a contest to follow in week four. NC State in Clemson. Virginia in Coastal, at Coastal. Rutgers at Virginia Tech. ACC Network, 3.30 kick. Youngstown State in Pitt. Duke at Middle Tennessee.
Starting point is 00:43:22 TCU and SMU, a little Texas battle right there, California and Florida State in Tallahassee, Miami, South Florida, Michigan State and Boston College. So we're still in that early stage of the season where a lot of out-of-conference action is happening. But next week, the meat and potatoes of the schedule starts playing out. So, Hootie Rackliff, some closing thoughts for the viewers and listeners, what you have in the hopper, what you have coming up, and other things that are on your mind. Well, we'll be at Tony Elliott's press conference this afternoon
Starting point is 00:43:53 to find out what he thinks about what went wrong the other night and how they are going to fix it. I'm not sure he'll reveal all that to us. But the questions will be there for sure. And a look at Coastal Carolina and what his view is of that game will certainly be all over that game all week long. And keeping our eye on basketball recruiting, they've had some prospects in over the past few weeks. Chance Mallory had his official visit this past weekend. Was it breakfast at the Kempton? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:42 I didn't see that. Jay Willie and Coach Bennett. Breakfast at the Kimpton with the Mallory family. Not a bad spot for a little brunch. Not a bad spot at all. It'll be interesting to see how they go. I know he still has some other visits he wants to make.
Starting point is 00:45:04 Another point guard who visited here a week a couple weeks ago tillery is going to be making his decision soon i think he's narrowed it down to virginia wake and maybe cincinnati i can't recall but that guy's a baller it's uh interesting to see if he pulls the trigger and commits for a point guard as well is that going to be the first point guard pulls a trigger or is it going to be if if tillery pulls the trigger and they and Mallory still wants to come here will they take two point guards Tony likes to play two point guards so maybe so but we'll keep our eye on that. Some of these guys are going to be making decisions soon, I think.
Starting point is 00:45:55 Nate Ament, the number three player in the nation, according to some people, probably a one-and-done guy who Virginia was highly favored to land, postponed his visit. He canceled both his visits to Kentucky and Virginia and said he may wait until the spring. I don't know if that's good or bad for Virginia, but the fact that he canceled all of his visits is probably nothing that inflects upon Virginia. We'll be keeping our eye on all the basketball recruiting. They still have, I think, another
Starting point is 00:46:31 player or two to come in. Certainly that's a big deal. We're getting not that far away from the ACC Basketball Media Day down in Charlotte, which will be coming up before you know it in a few weeks down in Charlotte. So basketball is not far around the corner. It makes me happy. I love basketball. I love all the sports, really.
Starting point is 00:46:55 Oh, and tip of the cap to Lauren Kaufman. What an unbelievable performance she put on up in Lake Manassas this past week. Tied an American rookie record going 3-0-1 in the Solheim Cup. Tip of the cap to the U.S. So happy for her and the U.S. team. She's a Virginia golfer. Particularly for her. She lives here in Charlottesville and contributes to the community.
Starting point is 00:47:28 She and her husband, John Pond, are just great people. Well said. Well said. Hootie Ratcliffe, namesake of JerryRatcliffe.com. I'll say it again, JerryRatcliffe.com. I'm genuinely and literally on his website two to three times a day. Check it on Hootie's Twitter account probably two to three times a day as well. Follow him on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:47:45 Go to the website. Check the content. I think you're going to be extremely impressed. He's got fantastic community partners at jerryracliff.com. Always looking for more partners, ladies and gentlemen. Judah Wickhauer behind the camera. Wickhauer and I have a conference call on the very near horizon, which we will cover here. My name is Jerry Miller. This show airs wherever you get your social media and podcasting content. Get ready for Coastal, guys. It's going to be a backyard barn burner. Thank you kindly for joining us.
Starting point is 00:48:13 So long, everybody. Thank you.
