Welcome to the Jerry and Jerry Show, guys.
My name is Jerry Miller, and thank you kindly for joining us on the source of the source for anything and everything UVA sports related.
Today's talk show is one where Wahoo Nation is reeling.
Virginia was humbled in Tallahassee.
And humbled is probably an understatement.
Florida State looked like the Florida State of old.
And the University of Virginia football team did not look like the Wahoo football team from last year.
And as a result, we are left asking a lot.
lot of questions with a roster that is quite expensive. It's no secret that tens of millions of
dollars were accumulated and were allocated to the 2026 Virginia football roster. And when that kind
of money is paid out to collegiate athletes, the expectation is you get off the bus and you come
ready to play from the opening whistle. And Virginia, for this entire ball game, did not come ready
to play big time football. It's the Virginia team that showed up, unfortunately, against Pittsburgh
that showed up, excuse me, West Virginia that showed up against Florida State. And today we'll
talk about what went wrong in Tallahassee. Virginia's got a chance at redemption on Saturday at home
against Syracuse, where they're a nine and a half point favorite. We're going to assess this past
weekend. I'm going to ask Cudy if it's time for a quarterback change, how an offensive line allowed.
was it 10 sacks hoots?
Yeah.
10 sacks.
And whether the tape is crystal clear for opposing defenses,
load up the box, stop the run,
and make Bo beat you downfield and see if you can do it.
So much to cover on the broadcast.
We'll welcome Jerry Rackleft to the show.
He's a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer.
This guy has more awards and accolades than just about anyone I know.
And his website, Jerry Rackcliffe.com,
is a subscriber-based website that costs $8 a month,
and his team is producing 40 to 50 pieces of fresh content per 30-day period.
There's no one offering that kind of coverage,
and it's the price of a cup of coffee.
Judah Whitcower behind the camera, Jerry Rackleff,
with thousands watching you here on the Jerry and Jerry shows.
We're live on 27 social media and podcasting platforms.
Scatter shooting, where would you like to begin, my friend?
Well, I mean, I didn't think Virginia would win this game last week because they just haven't proven that they can win on the road for one thing.
And they were stepping up in the caliber of competition.
And after giving Florida State a good study, we had heard that they had had talent, but they certainly, if you look at,
at them on tape, they're loaded.
They, I don't, whatever the problem is down there, maybe it's straightened out now, I don't
know, but they, they were underachieving more than any team, any program that I've seen
in the ACC in a long time, but they gave Alabama a run for their money and I think
Alabama's legit national contender.
have talent.
Buku's a talent.
And they,
if you look at them on tape,
and we did that,
we started a new podcast Friday
with the former Virginia
defensive end
Kevin Crawford, and
we broke down a lot of Florida State
tape. With Wally Lundy.
And we had Wally Lundy come on.
One of the best tailbacks in program history.
Yeah, and he's done some coaching, and he does a lot of video breakdown in various capacities now.
But it was obvious that Florida State was superior athletically, and they just had to get their act together, and they did.
And Virginia had no answers for it, and that's the disturbing thing, is that,
West Virginia kind of provided a blueprint on how to beat Virginia,
and Delaware kind of tried it, but they didn't have the personnel to pull the
off.
Then their quarterback gets banged up.
Yeah, and Florida State obviously used the same strategies, philosophies, et cetera,
and dominated every aspect of the game.
And now Virginia's going to be.
faced with everybody else knows that game plan has been Xeroxed all over. I guess
there's Xerox is still, right? We'll go a Xerox. You could say screenshot. Yeah,
screenshoted everywhere around the ACC and beyond. So, you know, Virginia's got to come up with
some answers on how to counter that. And so far they haven't. I'll ask you the most straightforward
question ever and there are more comments on the feed than I can keep up right now.
And viewers and listeners, put your comments in, whatever chat box you're watching,
it's live on 27 platforms right now.
I'm going to ask you a straightforward question.
If I'm an opposing defense coordinator, I stack the box, I keep Virginia from running,
and I dare bow to throw the football 10 yards or more.
Can that man do that?
That's the big $64 million question, I guess.
It's going to boil down to whether you have the personnel to be able to pull that strategy off.
I don't know if Syracuse does or not.
They do have, offensively, they do have a dual threat quarterback,
a guy who actually throws it more than he runs it.
But he threw for five touchdowns last week in an overtime win.
over Yukon, 42 to 41.
Amari Odom, I believe is his name.
They have a really good wide receiver and a really good tight end that I've been impressed
with all season.
But it's going to come down to whether they have the personnel to do it.
Again, Delaware tried it.
Didn't have the horses, as you mentioned.
I don't know if Syracuse has the horses or not.
They haven't been very good this year.
So they'll definitely try it and test Virginia to see if they have any success pulling off the same strategies or not
and to see if Virginia has made adjustments to counter that strategy.
And it's going to be interesting to see if Virginia does or not,
but they're going to make Bo throw it.
He's got the shot put delivery.
I'm not trying to throw shade on Bo Peribula.
Yeah.
It's the most difficult position in all the sports.
There is, and there's a lot of pressure,
and he gets, you know, quarterbacks get too much praise
and they get too much blame and all that, as we know.
But at some point...
It makes a lot of money.
You've got to deliver.
You're getting paid now.
This is pro football.
Right.
This is pro football.
This is not fun.
It's not scholarship football.
It's making what families make in five years, six years.
Yeah.
Seven years, eight years.
Some never make that.
Right.
That's what I'm saying.
This guy's making a hell of a lot of money right here.
Is it time for Eli Holstein?
I mean, you look at the two games that they've,
lost on the road.
Against West Virginia, who was 21 of 33.
Yep.
That's 63%, which is passable.
997 yards, two touchdowns,
but he wasn't able to run the ball.
He got sacked three times.
Against Florida State, it was abysmal.
It was 14 of 32.
That's not even close to 50%,
for 168 yards in a touchdown.
he was two of eight while under pressure
and three of 13 versus the blitz
and he just couldn't move the offense
Virginia after that first quarter
that first that opening drive which Virginia scored on
Virginia only had 104 yards of the final three quarters
and yeah Florida State blitzed almost
50% of the time, which was way above the average that they normally blitz.
But, you know, people are trying to overwhelm Virginia at the line of scrimmage.
They're just sending more people than Virginia can block.
And even if you're an NFL line, there's only so many bodies you can block.
If people are throwing eight, seven or eight people at you, there's just nowhere to run.
And so that puts the pressure on the quarterback.
To make the hot read.
make the hot read and he's just not getting it done. And the hot read is the play that opens a lot
of opportunity when defense is blitz. The hot read keeps the blitz from happening. Yeah. And,
you know, you could throw a few screen passes in there that might help, but I haven't seen much
of that. So, you know, I don't throw all the blame on bow, but certainly he deserves a good portion
of it.
And I think it's time to give Eli Holstein a shot.
I mean, I think for one, you know, what do you got to lose?
He's a taller quarterback.
He's more of a pocket passer who might be more adept at finding open receivers or seeing them.
And, I mean, that's his superpower as opposed to Bo's ability to run the ball.
which is ineffective right now.
And if nothing else,
it may just send a strong message to Bo that, hey,
you need to get your act together
and become a more effective passer.
But again, if Beau's strength is running and he can't run it,
then what are we doing here?
Then, you know, why not try something else
and just at least see if it works?
He had nothing to lose at this point.
you mentioned the West Virginia game a little bit of Fool's goal with that stat line with the
final drive with Bo when the game was already out of reach.
Eli Holstein, look, everyone's favorite player is the backup quarterback when the team's struggling.
Absolutely.
When I was watching the West Virginia game, I saw a quarterback that mechanically did not look like a big.
time college football quarterback. I highlighted after that West Virginia game on this show the
shot put motion of his delivery. It is not the fastest of releases and the accuracy is obviously a point
of concern. Eli Holstein has had starter experience. You've highlighted on jerry rackliff.com
that he was recruited by Nick Sabin. Yes. Alabama.
he performed, to say he performed admirably at his former employer, the Pitt Panthers is an understatement.
Dude was a stud, and goodness gracious, Pittsburgh certainly wishes they had Eli Holstein right now.
Probably so.
They're starting quarterback having his knee shredded against Virginia Tech.
Yeah.
They're having to go with a backup now.
Why not, you know, why not try?
Is that a question that may be asked today at the press conference?
I'm sure it will be.
It was asked after the Florida State game
that if there was any consideration in switching,
making a switch during the game.
And they said it was considered.
They had a conversation about it.
He didn't go in any detail,
but I think he felt like at that point
with Florida State's pass rush,
being as ferocious
as it was
that they might be throwing
Eli into the fire. But
again, you know, what do you got to lose
at that point? Right. And he's
a paid professional. And furthermore,
I'm looking at his stat line.
Eli, I mean, goodness gracious,
while he was the quarterback for Pittsburgh
the last two years,
29 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.
29 to 13.
A lot more that we have to talk about than just the quarterback play.
10 sacks cannot be completely attributed to Bo.
We have to talk the offensive line
that on paper is the strength of this football team.
We have the AARP of offensive lines in college football here.
the most experienced offensive lines from a snap count standpoint,
when you got fifth years and six years all over the trenches.
Two seventh years, two six years and a fifth year.
Yeah.
What happened?
Again, I think it's the other team is just selling out.
They're putting more people in the tackle box
and bringing more people than you could have the Dallas Cowboys line up there
and they still couldn't block all those defenders coming at you.
And if a team's willing to sell out like that,
then you've got to make them pay somewhere else.
And that's where everything's broken because
either Virginia had receivers that got open.
The ball was underthrown or never thrown or overthrown.
And there were a few drops as well.
But Virginia's got ashore overgrown.
the passing game
in order to
keep these defenses honest
because if they're just going to send
more people than you can block and sell out
against the run on every down
just about, particularly on passing downs,
then you've got
to have an answer and right now
they don't.
They just haven't had one and
a lot of that
falls on bow.
He's got to make quicker decisions,
better decisions and get rid of the
ball and be accurate and that's been his downfall in the two losses particularly last
Saturday. Can we talk about, this is on the feed, William McChesney brings this up, the mayor of
McIntyre. Can I use the word questionable decision with the holding penalty at the end of the
first half?
Florida State, was it in an offensive hold?
that was not accepted.
Oh, that call, yeah.
Walk us through it here.
Coach Ellie does not accept it.
Yeah, he could have pushed him another 10 yards back,
which I would have done.
I've always been in favor of 90% of the time taking the penalty
and pushed him further back.
Instead, he declined it and gave him an extra down.
And they were able to.
move the football close enough to kick field goal.
Right before halftime.
Right before half time.
Certainly that was probably the least of Virginia's problems on the day,
but it was still a questionable decision.
And I didn't agree with it at the time, and I still don't.
I guess it depends on what your philosophy is on that kind of play.
Tony was hoping to stop them and get the ball back in time to maybe
kick a field goal himself, but it backfired.
Like he said, you roll the dice, and sometimes Lady Luck is not on your side,
and this time it wasn't.
Just like Lady Luck has been on his side going forward on fourth down.
They were one of the highest fourth down efficiency teams in the nation before that game,
and then I think they were 0 for four or something against the Seminole.
So sometimes Lady Luck is looking the other way.
One of our favorite viewers and listeners is James Madison,
who's watching in Mineral, diehard UVA fan.
He wants to know what's up with the defense,
and why can the defense not seem to tackle anyone?
That's a good question.
And I don't have an answer for that.
I mean, you've got to tackle.
That's the basic skill on defense that you've got to have is tackling.
blocking and tackling are the two things that if a football team can't do that, then it can't win.
And there was some real shoddy tackling.
I give Florida States some of their players, their running back, I think, broke four
tackles on one play.
And I mean, that was one of the best runs I've seen in a long time because he's that good.
but still you can't just arm tackle people.
You've got to put your body into it.
And as Al Gore used to say, you stick your face in the fan.
And you can't arm tackle your way against good football players.
It's not going to work.
And there was a lot of arm tackling down at Tallahassee.
And some people were going for the ball or trying to knock.
the heck out of somebody, but again, they didn't wrap up.
And that's something John Ritzinski, I'm sure, is going to stress,
and probably has already been stressing in practice this week,
is get back to fundamental tackling,
and because you can't beat anybody if you can't tackle.
I have put in our headlines, Virginia is searching for its identity.
Yeah.
This viewer and listener has responded from Outer Banks and said,
to your point on the headline about searching for an identity,
if the team cannot run the football and both struggles to run the football,
what brand of football are we playing?
If you can't do either one of those, you're playing losing football,
and that's got a change starting this week.
Again, they've got to find an answer.
If people are going to sell out and try to stop the run,
then it falls on the quarterback to be able to accurately throw the ball
and back the defense off.
Because if you start burning people with the pass,
they're not going to blitz you like that.
They can't afford to because it's easier to gain big chunks of yardage
throwing the ball that it is running.
But if you can't do either,
then it's going to make Mr. Sparks, Daniel Sparks,
the punter of the year, because he's going to get a lot of action.
And they've got to, they've just got to work on the passing game and get it to work.
Because if you can't run it, you've got to throw it.
And if you can't throw it, then you're screwed.
You don't have any other options, but you've got to make people pay for it if they're going to sell out to try to stop the run.
And Virginia's not doing that.
This comments come in on Hillman and Cam Robinson seem to be the alpha dogs, talented guys on the defensive side.
Right.
What's going on with Robinson and Hillman?
I think they're okay.
I think Cam is just now getting back to being comfortable.
comfortable playing. I mean, you've got to consider he's a lot of people don't come back. He was
injured the first week of November last year. A lot of people don't come back for a year after
that injury. He was back in 10 months or less. And the fact that he's even playing is kind of a
miracle in a way. You got to give him a lot of credit for the hard work he's put in to be
able to get back that fast.
And, yeah, he didn't get the full training camp experience
and didn't get a lot of contact until later in the camp
and then missed the first game of the season.
He's just now getting back into playing for him, I think.
And I'm not concerned about Cam Robinson at all.
I think he'll be fine.
And Hillman, I think Hillman is Hillman.
He's still hitting people hard and all that.
He hadn't made any spectacular turnover plays in the last couple of weeks.
He had a tooth problem down against, was it West Virginia?
Yeah, it was West Virginia.
But he's okay.
I'm not worried about either one of those two guys.
I think they'll be fine.
Jim Moore, 7725 on YouTube.
relay this live on air says this as I just responded to him in the chat box. I'm sorry,
but it all boils down to coaching for me. The, I have to do a better job coaching answer from
Tony Elliott gets old quickly. Tony Elliott gets paid to coach and motivate the team. I, you know,
I'll offer a little perspective, throw it to you. I understand that, Jim. I also understand that
the, what's the old saying about the jimmies and Joe's?
It's not the X's and O's, it's the Jimy's and Joe's.
Yeah.
And this team was dropping passes, the wide receiving core.
The offensive line was not protecting the quarterback.
The quarterback was not accurate with throwing the football,
nor was he making quick reads on blitz coverages,
on blitzes in his face.
Defense looked like it couldn't tackle anyone.
I was doing a hell of a lot of arm tackling.
this one for me is much more player related than coaching related.
Now, I will say this.
I will say this, shows our stars.
It's hoody's show here.
I will say this.
If is Des Kitchens and Tony Elliott do not figure out that the, and they already know this,
but that the tape is out there to stop.
They know.
If they don't adjust to that, then we can start pointing to coaching.
Right.
Because if they keep going in with the same game plan that Bo is going to beat people with his legs and we're going to run the football when they're facing eight, nine-man fronts, then goodness gracious.
It's the definition of an insanity right there.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean, Tony L.
It's saying what most head coaches would say.
If you pay attention to press conferences and post games around the country, that's pretty standard for a coach to fall on the sword and not throw
players under the bus.
And that's what a lot of head coaches do.
That's showing leadership to the team in the fact that you're not pointing fingers.
If a coach points fingers, then the players are going to start pointing fingers and everything
falls apart.
He has to show leadership to his team before he shows it to the public.
And I know that's not an acceptable answer.
It's not acceptable results.
And fans expect more, and Tony knows that.
He expects more to.
They're trying to come up with solutions, I'm sure.
I'm sure they're looking at every aspect of the program
and trying to figure out a way to resolve these issues.
They didn't do a very good job at Florida State.
They got out-coached and out-played, and there's no question about it.
And I think they'd tell you that.
But, you know, that's a standard thing for head coaches to do,
and that goes back decades.
Some of the best coaches ever, Lou Holtz, Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant,
even Nick Saban would often fall on the sword and say it's my fault.
I'll fix it.
Because they don't want the players to feel any more pressure than what they normally do anyway.
But the brand of football they put on the field last Saturday was not acceptable.
And again, they know that.
And I'm sure they're trying to fix it.
It gets old if you're a fan and you keep hearing the same rhetoric.
But, I mean, what else is he going to say?
Yeah, that's all that's all right.
And, but I think they're, I think they'll try to come up with some solutions this week
because they know, I asked Tony Elliott after the West Virginia game,
if he expected to see copycat versions of what happened.
I mean, he straight up said Delaware's going to do this.
And he said, yes, no question about it.
And we're going to keep seeing this.
And that's been the case.
and they're going to keep seeing
until they find an answer.
And, you know,
the one thing about Florida State
was that Mike Norville said after the game
that he had three offensive plans
that if Virginia tried to defend him this way
or take this away or take that away,
they were going to try to answer with this or that or the other.
They had plan A, B, and C.
I don't know.
If Virginia had a plan B and C, I don't know,
if Virginia had a plan
B, it wasn't evident.
I haven't seen a plan B
the entire season.
Yeah, and so that's
the point of concern
right now. They've got to
find some other
ways to attack if
this
defensive strategy
doesn't change.
Well, and my concern with
the plan B is
I'm not sure
I'm not sure the quarterback can execute
the plan B.
Well, he may not be able to.
And that's why, I think, I mean, that's why you have a good backup quarterback.
This could be why this guy didn't play at Penn State.
It could be.
This also is, you know.
Certainly he was behind a better quarterback up there, a guy who's made the
deal with roster.
Yeah, an NFL quarterback.
Yeah.
As a rookie.
But, I mean, I mean,
I mean, Eli Holstein has proven that he can play.
I mean, he got benched himself last year because things went south on him in a couple of games.
And he lost his starting job.
And that's why he decided to transfer.
But, you know, the one thing you got to remember is these coaches see these guys in practice every day.
And they don't just watch the practice.
They break down the –
the film of practice,
they film practice every day,
and they break those down,
and they know these quarterbacks
and what their capabilities are.
So I guess we'll see Saturday as to whether,
I expect they'll probably go with Beau Probula as the starter,
but he might be on a short leash.
I don't know.
Tony has been known to stick with his starting quarter,
quarterback. He did that.
If you'll go back to the
a few seasons ago,
when Brendan was struggling
all season long, there was no
switch. And then
yeah, he tends
to do that.
Calandria?
He went with
Calandria. He went with
musket. Musket.
Calandria is crushing it right now.
I thought the only time he did make a change,
which I was
I thought was a mistake was when he benched Calandria for the regular season finale at Virginia Tech.
Which led to him transfer it.
Cose to him to the transfer.
Right.
And now the Calandria has Nebraska at 5 and 0.
Yeah.
But I think, you know, there's, it's a big deal.
And, you know, last year they had the luxury of having a guy that was incredible,
years of experience and a great passer
and incredible grit in
Chandler Morris who
I think he was the kind of guy that could come into the huddle
and the players knew that he was going to find a way to win a game
and he could play from behind
and so far
Beau hasn't proven that he can do that
and so
he needs to do that to show the rest of the team
that when he walks in the huddle with command,
that they can believe in him
and that they can get the job done.
Anthony Calandria, 13 touchdowns
to just two interceptions on the season right now
for unblemished Nebraska.
Anthony Calandria, also two rushing touchdowns for Nebraska.
And this comes following the year at UNLV
where he accounted for 23,
touchdowns on just
nine picks with
10 additional trips to pay dirt
with his legs. I believe he was
the conference player of the year. I think he was.
Anthony Calandria.
Back to Virginia,
nine and a half point favorites
against Syracuse.
Your thoughts on that line.
And to give you credit,
to your horn here, I try to brag about
you often because your
crystal ball's on point.
You said on this show, and I was
very quick to agree with you that that two and a half point line with Florida State was insanity.
Yeah, I'm not a betting man, but I kind of wish I was because I would have made a lot of money.
I would have bet the house on Florida State winning that game.
But I'm a little surprised it's nine and a half.
I don't think Syracuse is very good, but they do have enough personnel that they can hurt you if you're not playing well.
and again, if Syracuse comes in with the same strategy
and Virginia can't adjust to it,
then we could be looking at another close football game
going into the fourth quarter.
I mean, they haven't been very good this year.
They had to go into overtime to beat Yukon 42 to 41 last week.
And they started a new quarterback,
as I mentioned earlier, Odom, Amari Odom, who made his first start and threw for five touchdowns,
which tied the Syracuse record, and then he ran for a touchdown.
And he's – Coach Brown up there called him a winner.
And, you know, those are the kind of guys that can hurt you.
And, again, they have a wide receiver.
I think he was ACC wide receiver of the week.
Umari Hatcher.
He had 12 catches for 152 yards and three touchdowns.
His final touchdown came into fourth and goal from the Yukon 17 yard line in overtime
to set up the game-winning two-point conversion.
And they also have, assuming he's still healthy.
I saw him a few weeks ago.
They also have a tight end who can hurt you.
he's really good.
So it's not like Syracuse doesn't have any talent.
They just have, they don't have enough of it.
I think they're kind of like Virginia was before the outpouring of contributions
and the fact that they have good personnel on the first team,
but they don't have a lot of playable depth,
and so they can get hurt if players go down.
but I'm surprised it's nine and a half.
I think if Virginia can get a tack together
that they can win by more than nine and a half.
And I think they need to.
And they probably do need to.
But I wouldn't, if they don't get it together,
then we could be in for another thrill or diller in the fourth quarter.
Right, right, right.
And I think this is a big time ballgame here.
This is a big time ballgame for Virginia to,
build confidence, figure out the brand of football they want to play,
figure out who their leader is, their quarterback,
recharge the fan base?
The fan base needs this.
We thought the identity of this team going in was going to be
with the out of the line and all those backs,
they were going to dominate the line of scrimmage and run the football down
people's throats, which you can only do to a certain degree.
Nick Saban found that out at Alabama when he was
at the top of the college football world,
people finally said,
well, we're not going to let you do this anymore.
We're going to make you throw it.
And that's when he brought in Lane Kiffin
as his offensive coordinator to open up the offense.
So you can only do that so much,
but you've got to have a balanced attack
to where you can throw it and keep the dogs off.
And they haven't been able to do that.
It's a night game.
Another night game.
Your favorite.
Not really.
All they get is night games, particularly at home.
It's a night game.
They have another night game looming against Duke.
Right.
A 7 o'clock kick.
But another reason why this is important,
Virginia, the following week,
travels to Dallas to play the ponies of SMU.
Look, SMU is 4 and 1.
They're 2 in conference play.
Ask them use a real good football team.
They are a good football team.
They haven't been as impressive as we thought they might be,
particularly with the quarterback the way they have in Jennings.
And maybe we're putting too much on his back.
But they're good.
They take football seriously out there,
and they're hard to beat anywhere, but particularly at home.
and you better have your act together when you walk into their stadium out there.
There's no question about that.
Virginia has, what, seven games remaining, seven games and seven consecutive weeks.
Syracuse at SMU, Duke at home, at Wake, cross country, or excuse me,
Cal comes cross country to Charlottesville.
UNC here at home
And then of course
The Virginia Tech match
I think there's another by week
In there somewhere
Actually you're right
Maybe in November I think
There's a look at that man's on point
There is a bye week
The first Saturday
In November between wake and cow
I'm looking at the schedule here
You're 100% right
Virginia Tech
Pit Contest
National TV
Would you make of that
How it ended
It was a hell of a game
I thought it would be
I picked the Hokies because it was in Blacksburg,
and if it had been in Pitt, in Pittsburgh, I would have picked the Panthers.
But it came down to obviously the final play of the game.
And I was watching it.
I thought the kick was good myself from watching it on TV.
But Scott German, who writes for me,
had a nice explanation piece on our site.
yesterday, that you can still read, that explains the difference in how officials review
our judge field goals and extra points in college football as opposed to the NFL.
And I've since seen a couple of other interviews where people said that looking at some of the
on the review looking at some of the fans in the end zone tech fans
and seeing the tech ball boys standing under the goalpost
that they both were just dejected because they felt like it was a miss
and they had a better view of it than obviously we had on TV.
So I think the officials made the right call,
even though it was a bit controversial at the end.
but I thought that was a good game
and Pitt's a team to deal with
the Hokies are too
and I think Tech will bounce back from this
and Pitt has an uphill challenge
because as you mentioned earlier in the show
they lost their starting quarterback
and I don't know how good this backup is
but certainly he's a drop-off from what their starter
was. What's wild to me on that
miss kick and how it's got everyone
wondering if it's good or bad, it was in or not,
is with how much money's in college football,
why the technology that we're seeing in like the Premier League
with soccer, with the ball breaking the plane, the goal
line in soccer, or heck in tennis. When we watch tennis,
the technology is so crystal clear whether the ball's in the box or not,
on the line or not. They have it down, whether
they can show the replay at the tennis match where like you've seen this i mean i'm not yeah you know
this as well as anyway the ball on the screen where it's like literally i whiskers hair away from
touching the line yeah balls and strikes in baseball there we go like it shocks me like america's i mean
college football's america's pastime now why that's not the case the NFL's the number one sport
yeah in america and yeah and uh college football's a close well i don't know if it's close but it's number
as close as anything at number two.
Right, because of the pageantry and the passion for, you know,
I'm shocked we don't have that technology.
I still think it's the best game in the world.
100%.
Yeah, I'm surprised I haven't come up with something that's a little more solid than what they have.
One dude sitting below a post looking to the other guy below the post where the other guy below the post just freezes.
And then the guy below the post is like, shit, I got to make this call.
Yeah.
That's what happened there.
And then it goes like this.
And then the other guy does.
Yeah.
And then the other guy copies them.
Yeah.
That's what we're left with.
Yeah, I know.
It's wild.
They've got to do better than that.
It's wild.
But again, after watching the reaction of those people, I was fairly confident that the right call was made.
But still, you don't want to leave things like that up in the air.
Right.
That's what it is.
How about Wake Forest?
Shock.
I mean, that guy should be coach of the year if they can continue this kind of success.
I don't know how he does it.
But then again, Wake has always done it.
I've been friends with most of the Wake coaches over the years from Algrove to Bill Doo to Bill Dooley to Jim Caldwell to Jim Grobe.
I don't know the new guy.
But they always find a way to take less talent and win with it.
Hats off to those guys because they're coaching their butts off.
They don't have the facilities or I don't think they have the money
and normally don't have to recruit the talent that some of their competitors doing this league.
But they've always found a way to win.
And you have to admire that.
And they're forced to be reckoned with, I'm telling you.
Wake Forest humiliates
Stanford. And now you look at
Wake Forest as an ACC
contender. I mean, the clear-cut best
team is Miami, 5-0-3-0 in
conference play. Pittsburgh's 5-0, 2-0 in conference play.
Pittsburgh just lost starting quarterback to a
shredded knee. Duke is in second,
third, 4-0, 1-0 in conference play.
Then you get that logjam of SMU, 2-1
in conference play, Wake Forest, Clompson,
2-1 in conference play.
Florida State, Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State, and Cal at one-in-one.
How do you think this conference shakes out with about 90 seconds left?
It's going to be interesting to see if Florida State can build off this momentum,
because, again, they have as much talent as anybody in the conference, including Miami, I think.
They just haven't been able to take advantage of it.
Now, if they can, Florida State could still be a threat.
I think other than that, it's pretty much wide open.
It's there for the taking.
And that's why I thought Virginia would be one of the contenders this year
because it's so wide open and there for the taking of anybody who wants it.
And this team hasn't been as good on grass as it is on paper.
And so it's not too late for Virginia to turn things around.
but it starts this week.
Virginia football is got a big-time matchup against Syracuse.
Syracuse is a team that has got a dual threat quarterback.
It's a nine and a half point line in Virginia's favor.
It's a night game and the fan base, we hope,
is going to rally around a football team that needs a jolt of confidence
and what is a very important game as SMU is looming on the schedule.
Any closing thoughts here at the 49-minute marker?
Not really. We'll find out a little bit more at Tony's press conference in about a half an hour
and I urge you to read our site. If you read our site, some of these things won't be surprises to you.
And if you check out this podcast and the other two podcasts we do on Wednesday night
and then the new podcast on Friday nights where we break down the film of
the upcoming opponent
it'll enhance your football education
and there won't be as many surprises
out there as you might
find on game day. His Friday show
was excellent. I watched it, Wally Lundy,
