Starting point is 00:00:10 Good Tuesday morning, guys. I'm Jerry Miller. Thank you kindly for joining us on the Jerry and Jerry show. This, the source of the source, for anything UVA sports related. Starting point is 00:00:48 rackliff.com. The price of a cup of coffee, $8 per month, makes you guys in the know. Judah Wickhauer is behind the camera. Hootie Rackleff is the star of our show. He's a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer, and I'll tell you what, Virginia has got a lot to be excited for. they absolutely beat the brakes off of the Cavaliers, the NC State Wolfpack. They crushed the Wolfpack. They tamed the pack. They beat them like a drum, folks. Now Virginia's favored to win nine of its last 11 games.
Starting point is 00:01:23 SMU in Florida State, the only ones, according to Vegas, where Virginia is not favored. That Florida State matchup is basically a toss-up at one and a half. Florida State's at home. You get three points for playing at home. SMU's four and a half, three points for playing at home. You can make an argument those games are toss-ups. We'll talk football, we'll talk the quarterback, we'll talk the running game, the offensive line.
Starting point is 00:01:46 We'll ask questions about the passing game and Cam Robinson's health and whether Bo Prebula will stay healthy and we'll talk the recruiting weekend that was from a football and basketball standpoint. Get ready, grab your ice coffee, grab your Bodo's bagel, because we have a lot to cover. Judah Wickcower's studio camera. Judah Whitcower, two-shot. Judah Whitcower, the star of our show,
Starting point is 00:02:08 Jerry Hootie Rackleff, the namesake of Jerry Rackleff.com. It's a Tuesday morning, my friend, and we start with a scatter shooting with the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Well, I did all on everything you just said. They couldn't have asked for a better opener and result. And I think the NC State coaching staff was shocked. that Virginia beat them, dominated them so easily.
Starting point is 00:02:39 And because every time that NC State made an adjustment, Virginia had an answer for it. And I think they knew that Virginia had a good offensive line, but I don't think that I think they were stunned, that they were controlled like that by Virginia's big guys. And Dave Doran told our Scott German, and he said the rest of the ACC is going to find out that speaks volumes because Doran has been around for a while now I think he's maybe the oldest ACC football coach
Starting point is 00:03:22 I think of anybody else it's either him or dabbo I guess so I guess dabbo's probably been around a little bit longer than Doran but Those words coming out of his mouth, I think, speaks volume. Vanessa Parkhill is watching the show. Why don't we put Vanessa Parkhill's photo on screen? She's the queen of Ehrlichville. She said Saturday was a fun day at Scott Stadium. Whose gave the home crowd something to cheer for,
Starting point is 00:03:55 and Bo Prevula showed up big time. And then she adds, no way C.J. Bailey is winning a Hizeman after that performance. Let's go to Mineral, Virginia. I would say she's right. I think she's 100% right. CJ Bailey. Now, to Bailey's credit here, the man was facing a defense that was Brinks solid security type. But Bailey missed some guys, too.
Starting point is 00:04:24 Yeah, part of that was the defense. And part of it, I think he doesn't have the tools he had last year. He has or the personnel to work with. Duke Scott is a mere shadow of Hollywood's mothers, and they lost two really good receivers to Alabama and somebody else, some other big-time school, and they just haven't replaced them with the same kind of talent. So he doesn't have the weapons that he had surrounding him last year. Philip Dow watching the program, Olivia Branch watching the program, James Madison and Mineral, wants to know what happened with, is it, McKillan, Thomas?
Starting point is 00:05:06 Was he injured? Didn't see him in the second half. And he also wants to know about that Peyton Ellis, Tony Elliott confrontation toward the end of the game. If we have any insight on that. Nothing was said about Thomas after the game, so we don't know exactly what it was, if he was injured or what. We're not going to find that out for another week probably because there's no press conference this week since there's no game this week.
Starting point is 00:05:41 And they don't put out information like that except during game week. Elliot was on Lewis. I think it was after a special teams play. Didn't just saw a little bit of that on TV and the first. replay. He was getting barked at pretty heavily by Coach E. And I assume he either wasn't hustling or made an error on his execution or whatever play that was. But Tony Yelly, it doesn't matter if you're a starter or All-American or a red shirt. He's, if you mess up, he's going to yell at you, and that's, to me, that sounds of a good football coach.
Starting point is 00:06:36 Comments continue to come in for Jerry Rackleff, and Houdi, I absolutely concur with you. This comment comes in, and Olivia, we're going to get to your comment here in a matter of moments. This is a great comment. This is from Buckhead, Georgia. Can Jerry Rackleff put in perspective the dominance of this opener to previous seasons? Is this as dominant as this football team has looked in any season opener? against a team of merit? I would say so, going back to the days of George Welsh,
Starting point is 00:07:08 yeah, and I would have to go back and look at those seasons independently to make that kind of comparison, but I can't think of any against a team of note that was that dominant since then. I just don't think there has been. I know George had some teams that had some pretty impressive opening wins against some decent teams. But I can't think of any since then that was that dominant against a really good football team. So, yeah, most dominant, I would say, in at least 30 years. Olivia Branch watching the program, she says she's been waiting all weekend for the Jerry and
Starting point is 00:07:59 Jerry's show. Since the game, she's been waiting, literally since the end of the game, for this show. We appreciate you, Olivia Branch, the queen of Keswick. Do we start with the quarterback? She's amazing. Can we start with Bo Priebula? Where do you want to go on Bo? You know, if you've read my content for the past, since training camp opened, and if you've listened to this show, then Saturday certainly was a little bit of a little bit of, you. of a surprise, but you shouldn't have been too surprised because we told you exactly what Virginia had to do to win, what Virginia's strengths were, what their weaknesses were. So if you've been reading our content, you've known that this was coming, maybe not to this degree, but that
Starting point is 00:08:51 Virginia was going to win that opening game and how it was going to win that opening game. And So Pribula was just part of it. We said for quite a while now that we think he's underrated. I think he
Starting point is 00:09:11 showed people what a great running quarterback he is. He has said he's faster than a hiccup and he he's not shy about running the football.
Starting point is 00:09:25 he relishes running the football and I don't know that Tony Elliot wants to run him 15 times the game although I think I think that he could without you know he's just a tough running quarterback and we've seen a lot of that
Starting point is 00:09:43 from various programs over the years where a quarterback can make that many carries or more and get through an entire season knock on wood So, I think, you know, they didn't need to throw the ball that much, but when they did. They made a count.
Starting point is 00:10:07 The greatest example of that and the greatest example of what a great game I thought Des Kitchens called, as Virginia just dominated the first half running into football, what they put it in the air. How many times in the first half? Maybe three times. I don't have my halftime stats. I'll take a look. I'll find that. It wasn't very many.
Starting point is 00:10:34 And so, you know, Virginia's had 17 to nothing at halftime after just blowing their doors off, controlling the line of scrimmage. And so if you're dead's kitchens, you're saying, okay, NC State's going to come out in the second half. adjust for the run. They're going to load up the box. They're going to try to shut down our running game so we can't dominate like we did. So what does he do? First three plays of the second half passes. Flea flicker, then
Starting point is 00:11:13 another pass, and then the flea flicker went 20 yards, then another pass for eight yards, and then on second two, what does preview to do? He drops back, and he finds Martin, wide open deep, hits him on the fly for a 47-yard touchdown. Three passes in a row, whatever NC State came out expecting, didn't matter. And it went to 24 to nothing just like that. And the game was essentially over, really, at that point. And so Peribula was 9 of 11.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Unbelievable. 14-yard average, a 96 QBR. Yeah. I mean, combines for 266 total yards. I mean, 265 total yards. I mean, this is as perfect in a game as you can play. Yeah, I mean, I don't know what else you could expect from a guy, really. He was everything that you would expect him to be in more.
Starting point is 00:12:26 I think. And I think it's a really good sign that he's got a grip on this offense, and his teammates respect him, and we'll fight for him. And what a beautiful day if you're a cavalier fan. It was perfect. It was a perfect opener for Virginia football. Nice crowd. I was going to ask you about a sellout.
Starting point is 00:12:53 It was a recruiting weekend. It was a sellout. It wasn't full. Right, right. But I guess all the tickets were sold. Huge recruiting weekend. They had like a hundred or more prospects there from all over the place. And they offered a lot of those players, I guess, after the game, or that day or that night.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Twitter's been lit up with players who enjoyed their visit, and they had to have liked what they saw. Like you said, great weather, big crowd, enthusiastic crowd, dominating performance. I don't know what else a prospect would be looking for. And that one quarterback that they're after the freshman from Indian River, my goodness, they offered him after the game. That kid is dynamite. He threw for over 3,000 yards and 40 touchdowns as a high school freshman last season.
Starting point is 00:14:03 My goodness, I don't know. What a stud. I've ever seen a number like that before. Unbelievable, unbelievable. Comments are coming in faster than I can keep up here. There is some concern from the fan base about Pribula and running the football and taking hits and health and longevity. He, all out a little color, was injured last season, as the quarterback of Missouri, had the tigers in the hunt
Starting point is 00:14:26 atop the SEC, banged up, I believe it was an ankle. It was an ankle. Last year. Never returned to form. He is, dude, I love Bo Pribula. I've seen him play really not much football. He looks for contact. He is physical.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Keith Cather said he runs angry. He runs angry. And they also said that he, up after taking the first hit. That's when the juices start flowing and when he starts playing. Can this guy go a 12-game season and then a bowl game and knock on wood, maybe a playoff berth with these kind of hits? Well, he can.
Starting point is 00:15:09 It doesn't mean that he will. It doesn't mean that he won't, but he can. I mean, you look at option offense, quarterbacks, Army, Navy, Air Force, some of the other programs around the country. they run the ball more than Pribula did Saturday. And a lot of those guys go the entire season unscathed. They are accustomed to it. They know how to take a hit.
Starting point is 00:15:38 They know how to fall. It's all luck with anybody that runs the football because at any given time you can get hit the wrong way or fall the wrong way or somebody falls on you, and there's really not much you can do about it. That could happen if you run it twice a game or 20 times a game. So the beauty of it is this year they have a really good backup quarterback and Eli Holstein who's played power and won at Power 4 football.
Starting point is 00:16:11 And you don't want to see anybody get hurt. But if that would happen, they've got other guys to rely on, but don't expect him to change the way he plays football because he wants to run the football and he's good at it. And when he does, Virginia is a better football team. Amen, brother. Lawrence Johnson watching the program. He gives you props for going on his show.
Starting point is 00:16:37 He says, good morning. LJ's a great guy. LJ. The Tidewater. Yep. He's watching the program right now. Comments continue to come in. This show live on 27 social media and podcasting platforms literally at once,
Starting point is 00:16:49 where we encourage you, the viewer and listener to chime in on the discussion. Should we talk? A guy who comes back from entry? A guy who makes pay dirt. A book's a trip to pay dirt. A guy who wears number zero. A guy who showed up in the passing game, the running game, and is a feel-good story? Yeah, I mean, that is a feel-good story if there ever was one.
Starting point is 00:17:14 He's a great kid. Xavier Brown. went down and I guess it was the Washington State game last year with the ACL and talked to him during training camp and he talked about the dark days of that injury the first few weeks he was lost he didn't see any progress being made he was heavily depressed he thought maybe his His career was over. He was in a bad place. His teammates kind of held him up. And Tony Elliott spent a lot of time with him one-on-one, just trying to build his positivity
Starting point is 00:18:06 and shared a lot of biblical messages with him, I believe. They're both men of strong faith. And got to Xavier. things started getting better into rehab and he blossomed. And I guess even in early training camp, he wasn't sure what his leg would be like. They put a brace on it for practice. I didn't notice if he was wearing one in the game the other day or not. It's his choice.
Starting point is 00:18:47 Once he started taking some contact in camp, He started feeling just like his old self. And to me, it looks like he hasn't lost any speed. I mean, it blew my mind. He was as quick as he was, some quick hitters. And, I mean, he zoomed through those holes. And the defense, he was right past the end of the secondary in no time. And so to me, he looks like he hadn't skipped a beat.
Starting point is 00:19:18 And you got to be so happy for him. He scored a couple of touchdowns and had a great opening game. If you love football, you have to love what his story and what he's survived through. It was amazing. It was so feel good. And let's talk about the running game. Pribula's got 15 carries. Middlebrook's got 15 carries.
Starting point is 00:19:46 Brown's got eight carries. Noah Vaughn's got six carries. Zay Davis got seven carries. Paint Lewis got six carries. I mean, you got one, two, three, four, five, six dudes running the football. Six dudes, right? They have more tailback talent than they know what to do with. Well, the great thing is, too, that they're using them.
Starting point is 00:20:06 There's been times where they've had maybe not quite as many players and maybe not quite as much experience. And they had a bell cow and they would just, you know, The other guys wouldn't see much action. So the fact that they're used them all is pretty good. There were times where they'd have two of them in the backfield at the same time, et cetera. And, you know, it's hard to keep that many running backs happy. It really is, especially when you have a running quarterback.
Starting point is 00:20:44 And I don't know that that will be the case as some of the games get tougher, and closer that they'll be able to use five running backs in the same game. But I think in a lot of games, they will be able to and they're not shy about it. They want to give these guys the ball because they're all good. They can all produce.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Who's the best runner of the football in this team not named Bo? Well, I think it comes down from what we've seen. Now, that may change. as the season progresses, but from what we've seen right now, I think it's Brown and Middlebrook. We knew Middlebrook was going to be probably the starter
Starting point is 00:21:32 and probably get the most carries, most likely. He reminds him a lot of Jamari Taylor, and he does. I'm not sure he's quite as fast as Jamari was when he gets in the open field. But I don't think anybody expected to get, this out of Xavier Brown
Starting point is 00:21:53 this early. I think a lot of people thought, well, maybe he'll work his way back in to a little playing time and be effective down the road. But he was hot right out of the box. So I think right now it's those two.
Starting point is 00:22:11 Comments continue to come in, put them in the feet. I'll relay him live on air. This is an interesting comment on the tailback crew. When it comes down to crunch time, who's getting the ball with this football team? I think it's one of those two bags. Are privyular. Probably privyula, right?
Starting point is 00:22:32 Yeah. Well, it depends on the circumstance and the yardage and all that stuff. But they're not afraid to run the quarterback under any of those circumstances. But if it's not Beau, I think it would be one of those two guys because they both prove they can run inside or outside. particularly brown. He has the speed to get out around the edge. Middlebrook, I think it may be a little bit better between the tackles. But one of those three.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Jeremy Who watching the program, Jeremy Ronica, who is one of the most significant, passionate, loyal, and die-hard UVA fans I know. He says, I know it's only one game, fellas. But I cannot recall a UVA defense. that shut down a team the way the HOOS did to NC State on Saturday. Is this something we can expect weekend and week out? Is the defense just that good?
Starting point is 00:23:35 I think it is. John Ruzinski has really impressed me from the first season he was here, even though he didn't have much to work with. But the last year and then carried over to this year, once he gets the talent, he knows what to do with it. I mean, if you look at what he did when he was the defensive coordinator at Air Force, some of his defenses led the nation or were ranked high in the nation in numerous categories. And he was doing it with less.
Starting point is 00:24:15 Now he's got more, and he is really doing it. they smothered that secondary might be the best secondary Virginia's had I'd have to go back and look way back NC state receivers
Starting point is 00:24:33 couldn't get open they were smothered all day long and that's one of the reasons Bailey had so much problems when he did get somebody open he was being pursued by the pass rush and on the run
Starting point is 00:24:47 and throwing into tight windows and underthrew and overthrew a lot. Their running game did nothing because that front seven is just tough and they just kept rotating. And the front seven's missing their best player. Yeah, and they kept rotating player, player after player after player. They were fresh the whole game long. And like you said, Cam Robinson wasn't even in the game. Although I think they did find another dog. I wrote about that late yesterday,
Starting point is 00:25:25 and Brandon Hillman, the safety that transferred in from Michigan. Oh my gosh, dude. He is game wrecker number two. So now when Cam comes back, you're going to have two game wreckers in the game at the same time. And not many defenses have that. I mean, Hillman had a pick, was all over the field, physical, lateral, quick.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Punch the ball out. Forced to fumble. C.J. Bailey's hands. Yeah. He was all. He was sideline to sideline making tackles, chasing people. You see why Michigan wanted him. They expected him to be one of the big time contributors to their defense.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Maybe a team captain this year. And they were highly disappointed when he left the program. ACC defense at back of the week. Yep. I wouldn't even close. I knew as soon as the game was over that he would be the ACC defensive back of the week. There was no question about it. That guy's a stud. I mean, and guys, you know, say what we want about the NIL.
Starting point is 00:26:31 And I'm still lukewarm on the NIL. And good God, Lane Kiffin is going to single-handedly change college football as we know it with what he's doing with these. pro guys to college. Although, I don't know if you saw what apparently Clemson said last night, that if they play any professional players in Saturday's game, the Clemson will not play the game. I did not see that. Well, I would imagine we had a judge in Louisiana that said the Southeastern conference cannot prevent LSU from basically enrolling and playing and rostering. pro players.
Starting point is 00:27:19 Yeah. And the SEC came back and said that they would consider boycotting LSU. Right. And boycotting out. I kicked them out of the conference. I'm curious to see how that plays out. I am too. It's going to be a, I don't think the LSU is going to challenge that.
Starting point is 00:27:41 If you do, you're insane. He, Kiffin's now on the record saying that his current roster is all four. pursuing NFL players. And they're trying to fight a war in the news cycle now. You know, say what we want about NIL and say what we want about these extra years of eligibility. But let's look at the Virginia offensive line. What, six years and seventh years and an eighth year? I don't think there's an eighth year.
Starting point is 00:28:13 Six and seventh years? Yeah. On the offensive line? Yeah. We got a roster that is as deep as we've ever seen. We're too deep. I mean, we've got two starting quarterbacks. Right.
Starting point is 00:28:26 We have two quarterbacks that are legitimately power conference starters on the team right now. Yeah. We have a running back. We have a kid named Peyton Lewis in the running in the tailback in the running back room that may not be able to get off the bench and he played for Tennessee last year. And he might not be able to get off the bench. I mean, look at the defense. The best player on defense is, I'm still going to say Cam Robinson,
Starting point is 00:28:54 but this safety from Michigan is an animal. He truly is. This sparks, the punter is, what, a fifth year or sixth year? He's seventh year. Seventh year, yeah. I mean, goodness gracious. Like, say what we want about what's going on, but this football team is physical.
Starting point is 00:29:13 They're elder statesmen. they are far from underclassmen, they're well paid, they're too deep, and I mean, geez Louise, some people in the fan base are saying, why can't this football team go 10 and 2 or 11 and 1? Yeah, they could.
Starting point is 00:29:31 The Vegas odds makers, I'll throw this to you. Danny on Twitter, a guy we follow on Twitter, he posted the vaguest odds, hooty, for the football, for the rest of the schedule. I'm going to go ahead and call this up.
Starting point is 00:29:45 That way I'm not miss speaking here. Virginia is favored to win nine of its next 11 games. The only games right now where Virginia is an underdog is the Florida State matchup, and this is in Tallahassee, get three points for playing at home, and Florida State's a one and a half point favorite. And then SMU in Dallas, only a four and a half point favorite, SMU. and I don't
Starting point is 00:30:12 SMU hadn't opened up yet I don't think but at Florida State from what I heard didn't look that great in their opening game. Did not look great. I didn't see any of that but I said that if Virginia wins the NC State game
Starting point is 00:30:30 and they did more than win it there was a really good chance they could go to Tallahassee 4 and O and if you go in there 4 and O and you're playing well and they're maybe not. Look at Florida State's schedule. I'll call it up right now.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Leading up to Virginia game. If Florida State's reeling... He's Cannes. Then Virginia could... Roster splinters. Roll in there. Coach can. Demoralization in Tallahassee.
Starting point is 00:31:01 We've seen it in the last couple years. Yeah. I mean, he's already on the hot seat, and if they get off to a shaky start, it's going to be interesting to see what happens in Doak Walker Stadium. 3417 Florida State beat New Mexico State at home. Florida State did not look dominant in that one against New Mexico State. Hootie's Point, the schedule, SMU on September 7th.
Starting point is 00:31:29 Right. That's a home game. Then they'd travel to Alabama. Right. A 330 nationally televised game on the 19th. That's after a bye week. At least they have a buy before they play the tie. Central Arkansas at home, host UVA, at Louisville, at Miami, host Clemson.
Starting point is 00:31:49 Jeez, that's murderous row. Yeah, but the fact that they play SMU and Alabama backed back. On paper, you figure they lose both. Should. Should. Should on paper. SMU's ranked. Florida State's not.
Starting point is 00:32:04 Granted, it's home against... Alabama's going to be looking for revenge over losing to them last year. Right. You know, they get crushed two games in a row. Who knows what kind of scenario of Virginia will walk into down there. Philip Dow watching the program, Mayor Scottsville, Virginia. He says, who's favored in the Virginia Tech game? Philip, the Hokies are two and a half point underdogs.
Starting point is 00:32:34 That's changed because they were favored. Yep, that has changed. UVA is a two and a half point favorite at Virginia Tech. you get three points for playing at home. So that just shows you the odds makers saw how dominant UVA was against the Wolfpack. Cliff Daisy watching the program goes by Ray. Yeah, Ray. Ray came to Saturday's game and met his lovely family outside the press box.
Starting point is 00:33:01 And he gave me an open invitation to come down and visit him on the shore, which I plan to do. That's awesome. That's awesome. He says, good morning. Good morning, gentlemen. What a game. I was so impressed with both sides of the ball. The defense really did well.
Starting point is 00:33:22 My whole family had fun and such a great win. I very much enjoyed seeing Jerry Rackleff before the game. Let's keep these wins rolling, boys. Well, they should. I mean, again, I keep hearing mixed reports about West Virginia, but I would think Virginia would be favored in that matchup down in Charlotte on a neutral field. I'm shocked at the line's 12 and a half. Yeah, well, I am in a way, but then the more I read about West Virginia,
Starting point is 00:33:55 they're picked pretty low in the Big 12. And so maybe things aren't quite as peachy over in Morgantown as we previously thought. Comments continue to come in here. Can you boys talk about the wide receivers? What's going on with the wide receiving? Corps? Well, nothing surprising there.
Starting point is 00:34:18 I mean, they don't have, they didn't have any guys coming back from last year who had been proven receivers. Cameron Courtney is the starter in the slot, and he just hasn't put up any numbers. And that's been a very productive spot for Virginia over, the last few years with Washington and Trail Harris, who's now at Oklahoma. They don't have anybody in that spot right now
Starting point is 00:34:53 who can give them that kind of production, at least if they do, they haven't shown it yet. Rico Flores was supposed to start at the X, and he was injured or whatever and couldn't play. he was on the injury list. Ty Coleman made a couple of nice catches, a kid from Dan River High School down in Danville. Deshawn Martin had that really nice catch
Starting point is 00:35:25 of the touchdown pass, 47 yards. He's a transfer from Kent State. Jekwan Gibson from UMass had a couple of catches. But other than that, those guys, they just haven't broken out yet. And that was something that we felt like was, if there was a, and I won't call it a weakness, but if there is a deficiency on this team right now,
Starting point is 00:35:57 that it would be the wide receiver room. They just haven't stepped up and delivered. And they're hoping that will change as the season progresses because there's so many people involved. 17 wide receivers to choose from they're hoping that two or three of these guys are going to step up and separate themselves and be playmakers.
Starting point is 00:36:22 And that's going to be huge because they're not going to be able to run the ball like that against everybody that they play. And you know, with the wide receiving core, the fan base doesn't even need this wide receiving core and bow to throw 25 times, 30 times a game. No, you don't. You just need to keep them honest.
Starting point is 00:36:40 Right. They just need the threat of play action and the threat of a deep ball and the threat of a slant. Yeah. A threat of a hook just to keep the safeties and the backers slightly on their heels or considering pass. Yeah, exactly. If you keep pounding and pounding and pounding away, again, it's like those first three passes of the second half, they're going to cheat up and they're going to leave themselves vulnerable. And Beau Privile is good enough to take advantage of that.
Starting point is 00:37:18 Because he's a veteran guy, he can spot who's lined up where and anticipate who's going to be open. And if he gets that kind of coverage, he's going to burn you. Chad Wood watching the program. Chad Wood is a diehard Virginia fan. Yes, he is. played high school football for Steve Isaacs and the single wing attack in Crozay, Virginia. He's now Western Amarro, assistant football coach.
Starting point is 00:37:46 He says, gentlemen, Virginia has grown men up front. If that continues, them grown boys up front, look out college football playoffs on the horizon. Yeah. There's a lot of the fan page saying CFP. Well, I wouldn't rush it, but certainly they're going to have. have a chance. You go into Tallahassee and win and become five and o'n. They may be ranked before they get to Tallahassee, but certainly they would be after that. And, you know, if you get ranked,
Starting point is 00:38:23 it's just a matter of time if you keep winning that you'll move up in the rankings. And, you know, we saw what happened last year. They got up to, what was it, 12th or 13th in the CFP rankings? those are the only rankings that really matter, but it's certainly a possibility. I just wouldn't put my cart before the horse quite yet. We should talk about the play calling of Des Kitchens, because for the first three years, the offensive coronator was literally like almost hung in effigy. He was not a very popular guy right down. People were calling for Des and his job at a, you know, more aggressive clip than Tony Elliott.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Yeah. And goodness gracious, Des Kitchens last year and now the first game of the season, it's night and day. And it reminds me of what John Schumann told me one time. It said all coaches coached the same when they don't have players to coach. That's pretty much it. he was kind of the scapegoat of what was going wrong, but they didn't have that much talent. Al Groh said your record, you are who you are. The numbers don't lie.
Starting point is 00:39:58 It might be a little deceiving in some cases, but generally they're pretty accurate, and they just didn't have a lot of talent. and Bronco fought that and Mike London fought that and Groh fought that at the end of his career here but if you don't have the talent and you don't have the stuff to attract talent then you're behind the eight ball and there's no mercy in football you get behind
Starting point is 00:40:33 and people are going to bury you I've said many times one of my good friends used to be the defensive coordinator at Louisville. And he's been everywhere. He's been up Florida. He's been with the Dallas Cowboys. He knows football. And I asked him one year, I said, what about, what do you really think about Virginia's roster? And he said, Jerry, they have some really good football players.
Starting point is 00:41:03 But they just don't have enough. And he said, once you get beyond the starters, there's just nothing there. And that's no longer the case. The money that flowed in yet last year and continues to flow has completely changed everything about Virginia football. This is not your fathers or your great-grandfathers or your great-grandfathers of Virginia football team. This is a new era. And these guys have made really good. choices for the most part in bringing in players from the portal and they've got
Starting point is 00:41:44 depth everywhere there's depth everywhere and that has helped them tremendously Annabelle Vaughan the long-time SID at Wake Forest she really knows her football she grew she grew up with Clemson gal and I was talking to her at half-time the other day and she said said, you guys have a really good football team. And I said, well, yeah, you're right. And they should because they have spent a lot of money and they've brought in a lot of really good players. And Elliot Ruzinski Kitchens, they'll all tell you it's all about quality, playable depth. And they have it everywhere. Unbelievable. Everywhere.
Starting point is 00:42:36 The fan base all over the feed is talking about, you know, an ACC title run. They're talking about a college football berth. I'm like Hootie. I understand fan excitement and engagement. I'd like to see the team, you know, walk into that matchup against Florida State undefeated. I'm curious of the Florida's, of the West Virginia matchup. I'm most nervous on the schedule of SMU. And to say that I'm not concerned about Virginia Tech is a lie because of history.
Starting point is 00:43:16 And the games in Blacksburg. Well, we also know that Virginia's history, unfortunately, has been to lose a game somewhere along the way that they're not supposed to lose. Right. And if you looked at Saturday, North Carolina, is not as bad as they were last year. And they gave Virginia, well, Virginia won in overtime in Chapel Hill. I thought, I watched the game. I don't think North Carolina does it give me.
Starting point is 00:43:50 No, I watched the UNC TCU game. That was in Ireland. UNC played good football. TCU is a good football team. They have been. Yeah, and UNC figured out a way to win that ball game. and Bill Belichick, when that game, when the final whistle blew and it was clear that UNC was going to win, he did a pump of his fist.
Starting point is 00:44:11 And that fist pump, that arm pump from Belichick, a motion from Belichick, really spoke to what he's gone through in Chapel Hill with his son, with his general manager, the attention on his girlfriend, the struggles last year. And I could tell that he was extremely proud to get that win, Coach Belichick. Yeah. And I agree with what you said about UNC. Comments continue to come in. This from Mark Brown. Funny how good the coaches are when they have talent. It's not the X's or the O's. It's about the Jimmies and the Joe's. And I absolutely love our secondary. That's from Mark Brown. Chad said I watched some of the film and that line was moving the North Carolina State lineman at Will UVA's offensive line. He says, Hootie, any idea why the West Virginia tickets are so
Starting point is 00:45:00 outrageous being that it's in an NFL stadium and likely won't fill half of it. It was odd to me when looking at ticket prices. He's thinking about a trip to. Is it Charlotte there? I don't know. I think it's, I guess it's a game that they stage every year. It's connected to Duke mayonnaise. It's a Duke Mayo Classic or something like that.
Starting point is 00:45:30 I assume they had it before where they bring in two teams and play on a neutral field. And when they do that, the price tag goes up. That's the only explanation I can think of. I think somebody said $70 for a ticket. I don't know if that's accurate or not, but... Everything's so expensive. I've heard of Virginia's going to get a pretty nice payday out of that game. and I'm sure West Virginia will also.
Starting point is 00:46:04 But unfortunately, that's just the world we live in these days. And when they have a chance to gouge the fans, they gouge them. And that's just where we are. Yeah, it's everything. My buddy was looking at playing my out-of-town buddy, who's a Virginia grad, and he's bringing his son for one of the November football games. He's a big golfer. so is his son, his son plays high school on his high school golf team.
Starting point is 00:46:35 They wanted to play Birdwood on the weekend. Non-members at Birdwood. How much you think it is for a round with a cart? I'm guessing $140, $150. $185. That's even more than I thought. Yeah. Non-member Birdwood.
Starting point is 00:46:51 Fantastic course, beautiful course. Yes, no question. Heaven over there. 185 bucks on the weekend. That's a hell of a lot of money. For a father coming down from Connecticut with his high school, school-aged son to watch some football and to kill some time before the football game.
Starting point is 00:47:05 Yep. That's a lot of lot. No question. Yeah. So I think what he's instead going to play is, I'm drawing a blank on the Muni. Penn Park? Meta Creek. Meadow Creek. Which is another great course. It's a lot better than it used to be. Yeah. He's going to play Meadow Creek. But to your point, nothing's cheap.
Starting point is 00:47:28 Hell, even Meadow Creek's not cheap anymore. Really? What's the back of the napkin on that? I played nine holes out there recently and it was $40. Yeah, I think. Nine holes. Was it course a good chain? Yeah, it was. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:47:45 That's good. It's golf. Yeah. It's golf. Right. Comments continue to come in for you, Houdie Rackleff. The fan base is fired up. I can see right here.
Starting point is 00:47:55 This is an interesting one. Good. We're glad that they're fired up. I agree. And we want you for the fired up fan base. If you can't get fired up over the fan base. this. I have to check your pulse. Amen, brother. For the fired-up fan base, subscribe to Jerry Rackleft.com. It's $8 a month. It's the price of a cup of coffee and you get 40 to 50
Starting point is 00:48:12 stories per 30-day period. They're Wahoo fans and then there are Wahoo fans that subscribe to Jerry Rackleff.com that are getting 50 stories a month. This from YouTube, from 434 D3V. After week one, do you expect the team to be ranked even coming off a buy week? Depends on what happens. Yeah, I think they moved up in some, I can't remember what it was, but I know they moved up to 26th on somebody's list after the win, immediately after the win Saturday. I don't know if they'll break into the top 25 because there just wasn't many games.
Starting point is 00:48:59 And usually, you know, NC State wasn't ranked either so they'll definitely be in others receiving votes and probably pretty high in that I don't know if they'll crack into the top 25 or not we'll have to wait and see but it would be a significant jump if they did but you know
Starting point is 00:49:29 I wouldn't be shocked if they were like 24th or 25th. Not that it really means anything, but I think for those out there watching who really know college football would have to appreciate what they did this past weekend that it wasn't just an ordinary win, it was a dominating win. It was a dominating win.
Starting point is 00:49:54 And to Hootie's point, I mean, the real ranking is the, As the CFP. And to Houdy's point, let's see what happens with this ball club, you know, after that Flores State matchup. Yeah, that's going to be a really huge game for Virginia. Now, again, if Florida State gets hammered by SMU and Alabama, then it's going to lose some of its luster. But it'll still be hard to go into Tallahassee and win because it's, It's just there's this aura about going into Dope Campbell.
Starting point is 00:50:35 I think only one Virginia team has ever gone into Tallahassee and one. That was one of Mike London's teams. And I still remember Doug Doughty and I sat in the press blocks in the third quarter or fourth quarter looking at each other and saying, do you believe this? Because it wasn't supposed to happen. James Madison watching the program. He's in Mineral. he's responding to Chad Wood, who's watching in Crozay.
Starting point is 00:51:02 James Madison in Mineral Virginia says, Chad, my tickets were $250 each. Wow. For Charlotte, West Virginia. Wow. $65 for parking. Wow. So James Madison, who has not missed a home football game,
Starting point is 00:51:19 he and his wife for 48 years. That blew me away when I heard that. I still am thinking about this. James and his wife have gone. to every home football game at UVA for 48 straight years. He's making... We said 1979, right? Unbelievable.
Starting point is 00:51:37 Yeah, that's incredible. He's making the trip to Charlotte. I would imagine it's with his wife because he says two tickets. We're 250 each plus 65 for parking. Drop in a $565 bucks just on tickets in parking. Not gas, not wear and tear, not food, not anything else. And Olivia Branch making a plug for Keswick. Going to Charlotte's not cheap either when you're talking about a downtown hotel.
Starting point is 00:52:05 Yeah. Olivia's making a plug for Keswick Country Club. She said, join Keswick and the golf is included. Keswick and that's a beautiful, beautiful golf course. Keswick Hall is a beautiful course. William McChesney, the mayor of McIntyre is watching that program. Those hats that you gave Hooty and I, Olivia, I wear mine all the time. I do too.
Starting point is 00:52:29 I want to let you know. It was absolutely fantastic. So thank you again for those hats. L.J. It was sound assignment football. No one on defense was out of place. Wesley, you might know this. LJ is right.
Starting point is 00:52:43 He knows his football. Wesley is watching the program. You might have to help me with his last name. Is it Kinch Salyo watching the program? Who did he get the VSGA golf card? I've had that. in the past. I haven't renewed this year yet because
Starting point is 00:53:02 I haven't played as much golf lately but I've had that for a number of years. A number of years, yeah. Play all over the state. Yeah. This guy's you know, was at one time a pretty rabid golfer, right? Pretty often golfer. Oh yeah. I used to play.
Starting point is 00:53:18 This guy keeps it in the short grass and goes low. How many rounds would you do a year? Back when I was playing a lot I would play somewhere between 800 and 1,000 holes a year or whatever that turns out to be in rounds. I don't know, but it was a lot. It was a lot. That's a lot.
Starting point is 00:53:40 Probably more than I should have. You told a story on the show one time. You wanted to get the late great George Welsh on the golf course to show them the grip and the swing, right? I tried to get George to play golf. and he got so frustrated with it. He said, I can't get the wall off the ground. And he just kept hitting worm burners down the snake killers down the driving range. But he, bless his heart, I think maybe the last time I saw him,
Starting point is 00:54:15 I ran into him. He was reading newspapers and drinking coffee, and I asked him what he was up to. and I said, I hear you come over here and read the papers every morning. He says, what else do I have to do? He said, I should have taken up your offer to learn how to play golf a long time ago. Bless his heart. What a great human being he was.
Starting point is 00:54:39 I love George Wilson. Funny story about that. Jim Duceabella, who we lost this summer, great writer from the Norfolk paper. one year was put on the Virginia beat and he came to interview George and was a little intimidated because he had heard of George
Starting point is 00:55:02 watching his looking at his watch making sure that you don't go over your time limit with him and George could be a little abrupt especially if he didn't know you and so Deuce nervously goes into his office and George goes out to get a cup of coffee and comes back in. Deuce's Billis is trying to find a way to break the ice, and he sees a putter over behind George's desk.
Starting point is 00:55:32 And Deuce was a golfer, wrote some golf books. Great got to play golf with. And so he looks at George, and he says, Oh, I see you have a putter back there, George. And George looked at him. He says, I hate golf. So that was the end of that. That does not surprise me.
Starting point is 00:55:56 Comments, Jeremy to Chad Wood, he's going to go to Charlotte, Jeremy, the day of, and he'll buy tickets the day of as well with the hope to get them at a cheaper price point. Might be able to find something cheaper. Yeah, and Jeremy, I think you scored tickets to, was it the NC State game from the Will Call crew, I believe? Uh, Hoie Rackleaf, any other, well, we gotta talk basketball. How about the top 100 shooting guard that was in attendance that we read about on Jerry Rackleff. He's an up-and-comer, I think, class of 28, I believe.
Starting point is 00:56:34 They offered him while he was here. He had just gone on an unofficial visit to NC State the week before and was offered before he left Raleigh. So same thing at Virginia, and I think he's going to Kansas State in a couple of weeks. But he's got a lot of offers in that list is going to grow. Virginia is in the mix with a lot of high school kids. They obviously didn't sign but one high school kid in last year and the year before. So they're in the mix for more. So I don't know how that's going to go,
Starting point is 00:57:21 but they're certainly looking at a lot of four stars and maybe even a five star. And some of the people who have visited here or planned to visit here. What's in the hopper? We've got a buy week, and man, you're producing some prolific and analytical content hoots.
Starting point is 00:57:39 Well, it's a buy week, but we still are going to be. writing looking back at some of the things that happened over the weekend I'm going to be writing about Tony Ellis decision not to play Cam Robinson I'll be writing a story about the drive looking back at the drive long strive in school history that had to be incredibly frustrating NC State Virginia kept the ball for 23 plays, over 12 minutes. C.J. Bailey, who was already ineffective, was on the sidelines and couldn't get into the game.
Starting point is 00:58:30 Some other stuff just about Virginia football. Norfolk State opened up their season, I think, beat Winston-Salem State, which equals their win total from all of last year. So we'll maybe look at that a little bit and some other stuff. There's another high-profile basketball recruit who has narrowed his list to eight and Virginia's on it. So we'll be keeping tabs on everything Wahoo football, basketball-wise, and keeping up with the Olympic sports as well. If you like the show, please help us spread the world.
