Good Tuesday morning, guys. My name is Jerry Miller, and thank you kindly for joining us on the Jerry and Jerry show.
It's a pleasure to connect with you guys through a talk show that is UVA focused and UVA passionate.
Today's program features a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer that's been on the University of Virginia Beat for half a century.
The man goes to or has attended more ACC basketball tournaments than anyone and everyone.
52, 53 of them. I'll have to ask them once the show gets rocking and rolling.
Basketball season is now over, at least on the court.
Basketball season, off the court, is just beginning.
Ryan Odom now has to replace his conciliary, who is heading to Pepperdine,
and Ryan Odom has to replace a cornucopia of talented players,
like a point guard named Dalyte Thomas, a two-guard named Malik Thomas,
a two guard named Jacari White and a big man named Hugo who just captivated my attention.
We'll talk about the transfer portal.
We'll compare and contrast the success of Ryan Odom to the success of Coach Mox and coach Tony Elliott.
It's very obvious that the NIL has had tremendous impact on the University of Virginia
and its revenue generating sports, that topic on the show today.
I encourage all viewers and listeners that are watching this program to visit jerry rackliff.com,

Judah Wickhauer behind the camera.
We love you, Judah.
Can you go to the studio camera in a two-shot as we welcome my friend, Jerry Rackleff, to the program.
Good Tuesday morning to you, sir.
Good Tuesday morning to you.
It's a nice warm day here in Charlottesville.
It was wonderful.
I met you right outside the studio in our courtyard area, and it was fresh and breezy and mild, and it was nice to be outside.
Yeah, it was.
It's a nice change of pace, that's for sure.
my friend jerry rackliff.com is on fire you are four weeks in to this subscriber model and folks have responded favorably and positively hooty
yeah i want to take a moment and thank everyone for subscribing we really appreciate it means a lot
to all of us and to me personally and um just thank you so much for your support and we hope more people
continue to join the legion of our readers and we have a lot of good stuff in store for for those
coming up over the next month. My friend, Transfer Portal, football and basketball. We have
basketball season on the court officially over, but now basketball season off the court is
rocking and rolling. We have Chandler Morris News. We have D.E.E.
quarterback room. We have a conciliary to Ryan Odom that needs to be replaced. We start
every show the same way with scattershooting with a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer where the golden
nuggets often materialize. Yeah, you know, I was going to write a follow-up story yesterday on
Griff Aldrich, Ryan's associate head coach who's recently named the head coach at Pepperdine.
and I didn't realize it until I did a little research,
but his official press conference,
even though he was named a head coach last week,
won't be until April the 7th out in Malibu.
So not much coming out of the Aldrich camp at this moment.
I assume he's busy trying to assemble a staff
and I don't know if he's in Malibu or in Charlottesville,
but I took a look at what he's inheriting out there.
They just built a brand new,
supposed to open up this fall,
a brand new arena that's attached.
It's right in the middle of campus on something called
the mountain at Mullen Park,
It's surrounded by a lot of their campus and student activity buildings.
And this arena is going to be attached to a bunch of other amenities for students out there,
including restaurants, et cetera.
Spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean.
Can you imagine that?
and it only seats 3,600 people,
which I assume is pretty good for a West Coast conference team in most situations.
But I think the facility overall costs like $250 million,
not just for the arena, but the whole complex.
And it was just a cool seeing that.
And we wish him well.
I think he's,
I think he's essentially doubling his salary.
Yeah,
and he's a head coach.
And he's a head coach.
Again,
I was surprised by the fan base that said,
what the heck are you doing?
In my response to the people that were pushing back saying this was a vertical,
this was a lateral move,
if not a downward move,
I was like,
no,
it's not.
He's a head coach.
He's going to Malibu, California.
I mean,
this is maybe the most beautiful campus in America.
It may, yeah, Seth Greenberg told me it was unbelievable.
Yeah, I've been there.
Have you?
Okay.
Yeah, it is, it's breathtaking.
It is absolutely breathtaking.
And I think Thomas Jefferson's grounds are breathtaking.
But this is the ocean.
Yeah.
Hard to beat the Pacific Ocean.
Can't beat the Pacific Ocean.
I know.
And he's doubling his salary.
I just didn't get the, I didn't get the resistance.
And you're a head coach again.
And he's,
been known for a guy who likes to rebuild programs.
I mean, look at what he and Ryan did at UMBC
and then what he did at Longwood
and they did together again at Virginia.
So I know the people at Pepperdine were impressed
with his ability to think outside the box
because of his legal and business backgrounds.
I doubt that he needed the money.
I think he did really well in those 16 years out of basketball
when he was involved in oil companies and all sorts of stuff.
But then again, I mean, who wouldn't take a chance
at doubling their salary doing something they love?
And you look at the West Coast Conference,
the big gorilla has left Gonzaga.
They're joining the new PAC-12.
St. Mary's has been coached by Randy Bennett for as long as I can remember, and he's gone.
So they're starting over with a new coach, and they're bringing in another school to replace Gonzaga,
which I would assume is not a powerhouse.
I never actually heard of them, I don't think.
but I think it's a great opportunity for him to put his mark on that program.
Yeah, I'm 100% agree.
I don't blame me.
I don't see why anybody would question why he would make a move like that.
One of the byproducts of success, ACC regular season, second place,
ACC tournament second place, second round showing in the NCAA tournament,
one of the byproducts success is people are going to want your talent.
We saw it at Duke.
And as a fan, when one of your conciliaries or your lieutenants or your assistant coaches is heading to another program where they can build,
that's part of the Ryan Odom family tree.
And it's only going to attract more talent to Ryan Odom's coaching staff because the talent that considers the job that Odom has open is going to say,
oh, if I'm here, I could potentially do what Coach Aldridge did.
Yeah, absolutely.
And, yeah, he's 51 years old.
Some assistant coaches hang on to those jobs too long.
They want to be a head coach, but they don't bite it every opportunity that comes
their way.
And sometimes if you pass up too many, you end up not getting it.
An assistant coach forever.
Not getting it anymore.
We saw that with front of the program.
Williford. Yeah, exactly. And it happens a lot. So, you know, if you're going to make a move like
that, this would be the time to do it. What's the impact of Aldrich leaving the men's basketball team
to Ryan Odom and UVA? Well, you know, I think he was a good recruiter. He had a ton of connections
overseas. I know he was instrumental in finding
De Ritter and helping him bring him into the fold and I'm sure he had
something to do with the others as well from overseas.
He's a really good basketball coach and a really good guy.
I think he was just a bonus to the program in every facet that you can imagine.
When Griff Aldrich, when I was watching Ryan Odom this season, and Ryan Odom, when he was
either interacting with the referees or talking with the players as they were coming off the floor
during a timeout, often it was Griff Aldrich that was coaching up the bench.
He was often the guy that was entrusted, and it's important, not just an assistant coach
to Ryan Odom, but an associate head coach.
That title is, there's a huge difference there.
Yeah.
And one of the first moves Ryan Odom made when taking the job in Charlottesville was Griff Aldrich.
Oh, yeah.
I mean, he was at the inaugural press conference when Ryan was introduced to Virginia's fans, et cetera,
and was already well in place.
So, you know, most guys, when they get that, they want that association.
head coach title because that helps them get another head coaching job.
Like Chai Lucas.
Exactly.
And, you know, if you look around a lot of times when a powerful coordinator in football comes in,
he wants to be named associate head coach because it helps him move along and to become a head coach for the first time.
them or for the next time.
So, but anyway, I think, I think it was a tremendous opportunity and I'm happy for him.
I hope he does well out there.

I'm a subscriber and a reader.
It is the best content, UVA possible.
I read it every day, ladies and gentlemen.
The transfer portal is going to be paramount for Ryan Odom.
We're going to assume, for the sake of a talk show,
the Chance Mallory, Sam Lewis, Grunlow, and Derritter are back.
I think DeRitter, the expectation is he's going to need some more money.
And I'd say, goodness gracious, pay the guy.
He seems to be a seven-figure player or a seven-figure earner.
So you have a core of Mallory at one, Lewis at three,
Derritter at four, Grunlow at five.
You're going to need a two-guard.
You're going to need a backup two-guard.
I'm going to need a backup point guard,
especially with the style that Rine Otum likes to play.
a backup wing, and we saw the value of having two fives.
With Grunlow and Hugo, it seems like Ryan Odom is going to need maybe six guys.
Now, he does have six guys at play.
He does have Barksdale coming off a redshirt.
Not sure what the upside is with Elijah Gertrude.
Would not be surprised if Elijah Gertrude enters the transfer portal.
Yeah, I think he could go either way.
He could go either way.
Elijah Gertrude may see, oh, the two is open for me to take or some kind of combo guard alongside chance is open for me to take.
Or he may say, you know, the jury is still out for me whether he's playing at a level that's higher than his game, especially coming off the knee injury.
I'll start open-ended.
What do you make of the transfer portal with UVA and how it will attack the portal?
Yeah, and he was, you know, there was such a lot.
log jam at the guard wing positions that those other guys for the most part were just more experienced
and you can only play so many so many guys there so he may feel like that he can break into the
lineup if he stays but they you know they have five scholarships with five guys leaving so
it is important in his system even though he has a
potentially has a great nucleus coming back.
What makes that program tick is the depth, quality, playable depth.
And he has said many times that's the key to the season,
and he was certainly right.
If you don't have solid guys on your bench,
I don't know that that system can hold up over a 30-game scale.
schedule and be as potent as this year's team was because sometimes the bench would
outscore the starters.
And with that style of play, it's very physically demanding.
And so I'm sure they're already scouring the country for replacements.
I mean, every day I look on Twitter, I'll see another.
20 or 30 guys who said they intend to go into the portal, including the 7-foot-9 guy from Florida,
have apparently declared yesterday or today that he's entering the portal.
I can't remember his name, but there's going to be just tons of people to choose from.
And I would think with the success that Virginia had,
the playing time available and the NIL support that they're going to end up with five real equality
guys coming into the program.
Dale Thompson watching the program.
He says, good morning, Jerry and Jerry.
Hey, Dale.
Vanessa Parkhill, the queen of Ehrlichville, watching the program.
We love you, Vanessa Parkhill.
William McChesney watching the program.
Philip Dowell watching the program.

and that you share the show on facebook james manison and mineral is watching the program
the questions are already coming in who's the short list to replace griff aldrich
uh i don't know i mean i've heard a lot of rumors
I don't know that you can put stock in any of those
because I would think there's only probably a couple of people to know
and they're not talking.
So I think that's still up in the air.
I don't know that there's a great rush to do it,
although it's always good to have your staff in place
when you're going through the NIL transfer
portal stuff, but I mean, rumors abound.
And, you know, I would think he would want somebody who has been a head coach and probably
wants to be a head coach again to have that associate head coaching tag.
I heard it he's likely not to do it from within the staff that he has now.
So that makes sense.
Does it go out to a former UVA?
player.
Well, he could.
And Isaiah Wilkins.
Yeah, I mean, there's Isaiah Wilkins, there's Bryant-Stiff.
Does he consider a Jason Williford?
Possibly so.
I don't know how that dynamic would work.
Dynamic is.
Could be somebody, you know, most of the guys that have coached for him are still
coaching for him.
So I don't know if he would go out to a head coach that lost his job this past season.
There's several of those out there.
I don't know what kind of association he has with some of those guys.
But I would think he would bring in somebody who's pretty experienced
and has probably been a head coach before.
And again, probably somebody who wants to be a head coach again.
somewhere in the country.
So I don't want to throw out just rumor names because there may not be anything to it.
I don't like to spread those kind of rumors.
And that's why we like you.
We've got questions coming in.
This is coming in from the triangle in North Carolina.
Is the Hubert Davis a potential associate head coach at UVA?
Well, I would think it's possible.
Again, I don't know what his relationship.
relationship with Ryan Odom is.
I don't know how well they know each other,
or not that they have to know each other
because they know about each other.
I would imagine Hubert would probably like to remain in coaching.
Yeah.
And I don't know what kind of clause he has in his buyout
and contract that if he you know sometimes there's clauses in there that if you come back
and coach somewhere particularly in a program that's in your same conference they they don't
give you the full buyout so i don't know what that might add up to but uh yeah i would think he's
somebody you would at least take a look at or think about.
I say Hubert Davis, this is just my take here.
One man's opinion and comments continue to come in.
Put your comments in the feed and I'll relay them live on air.
Subscribe to Jerry Rackliff.com for the best content possible, guys.
It's the best content, period, possible.
You can't find it anywhere else.
In regards to Hubert Davis, he's straight upset.
I want to stay in coaching.
Get back into coaching again.
He should.
He should.
He's a good coach.
He had a fantastic record.
One 70% plus of his games.
He had bad luck with a Caleb Wilson broken hand in practice.
Yeah, I mean, that changed a lot.
A top five draft pick broke his hand in practice
and had to prioritize his multi-million dollar NBA career.
Yeah, well, we saw what happened when DeAndre Hunter broke his wrist in the ACC tournament
and how that impacted the team from that point on.
If I'm a Hubert Davis, I go a year in broadcasting and get right back on the head coaching circuit.
Yeah.
And he may just want to jump into the coaching if he gets an opportunity.
And what's intriguing about Ryan Odom, since he's just finished his first year on the job,
he doesn't have the depth of coaching UVA players to say that he would go into the UVA player pool
that's now assistant coaches and hire one of those as is an associate head coach.
coach is almost slightly unfair to Ryan Odom because he didn't coach those guys.
And oftentimes the coach wants an assistant, especially a conciliary, that he's got personal ties to.
Right.
So if he goes into the player pool, I wouldn't be surprised if it was an assistant coach or a former player that was at one of his other stops and not necessarily UVA.
And we saw that with Griff Aldrich.
Yeah.
And I've never been a big believer that has to be within the family kind of deal.
I think sometimes that actually put you in a bind.
We saw it with Huber Davis.
Yeah.
So, and Matt Dardy.
Yeah.
Just to name a couple.
I mean, there's got Adrian Autry from Syracuse who was considered a pretty good coach.
he didn't have the NIL support from Syracuse that he needed to keep that program thriving.
And as Jim Beheim pointed out during one of the broadcasts, and so, you know, there's lots of
candidates out there who want to stay in coaching, who for one reason or another was on the
wrong side of the aid ball.
Yeah, I mean, we saw it with, we saw it with Huggy Bear, Bob Huggins, West Virginia.
It really turned into messy with the legal issues.
Right.
We saw it with Matt Daughtry.
We just saw it with Hubert Davis.
Autry is a perfect example.
You know, and there's so much talent out there.
From my standpoint, the Griff Aldrich's replacement, my standpoint,
I would prioritize European ties.
Because Ryan Odom built the United Nations of basketball rosters with Hugo and Grunlow and Derritter.
And if he can carve a niche of getting these like professional basketball players,
even if they have two years of eligibility like Derritter and bring them to Charlestville.
Look at Illinois.
Right.
Perfect.
Go ahead.
Yeah.
No, I mean, their roster is filled with foreign players.
But yeah, you're right.
They need to, and I'm sure Ryan has the same connections,
but it would be good to have somebody that knows their way around that part of the business.
For sure.
If you were writing a column, and we're just spitball in here,
two guys at the coffee shop or the barbershop or the bar talking about sports,
and we're reading your column on Jerry Rackleft.com,
and this is subscriber content because it's really, really good.
and you were talking coach mocks coach odom and coach elliott.
Football head coach, men's basketball head coach, women's basketball head coach.
They all had fantastic years.
Certainly did.
Which coach, which program, and it's a two-part question, surprised you the most,
and which coach and which program had the best year over the last six, seven months.
Wow.
that's a hard one to answer
they all surprised me to some degree
I mean I knew that Ryan Odom would be successful
I didn't expect 30 wins
I thought maybe sweet 16
would be about as far as they would go
in the first year of the program
coach mocks
they got hot at the right time
their regular season was better than usual, but not spectacular.
But they made up for it in the postseason, and that was quite a run.
Football team, I knew they would be better this year.
I thought they would win seven or eight games.
I had no vision of any kind that they would,
eclipse the school record and wins with 11,
and then finish as high as they did in the ACC
and win a Gator Bowl.
So all three surprised me,
but I think the football team probably surprised me the most
just because that's only happened once in 100,
30 years of football here.
And if you're a Virginia fan,
you've got to look behind the scenes,
and the reason that all three of these teams thrived
and did things that are so uncommon and unnatural
in UVA history
is the NIL support they got from their boosters.
There's no way that.
that football team would have won 11 games without NIL support
and getting 30-some transfers.
It's like 40% of its roster, roughly?
Yeah.
Completely brand new.
I mean, you know, I was talking to Coach Rudd yesterday,
and I asked him about the influx of talent the past two years
and how that allowed him to do things he couldn't do before.
And he said there's no question that the support they've gotten
gave him
quality depth
at every position on the field
something that Virginia's
never had before.
And so when a couple of guys
went down, they weren't
in a tremendous mind like
they used to be.
Plus,
they were putting in fresh bodies
because they were able to rotate
all game long.
And secondary,
linebackers up front.
And they were fresh in the fourth quarter.
And look at all the close games they won and all the overtime games they won.
Same thing with basketball.
Ryan Odom will tell you flat out that the key of the season was the depth he had.
I mean, he could play nine guys and not drop off any.
I imagine Coach Mock's had some of the same.
I can't say that I'm an expert on her team, but they, thanks to Mr. Waffle House that we've talked about last week.
Alexis O'Hanian.
Ohanian.
Yeah, the Reddit founder.
Reddit, yeah.
Did you go by and check out the plaque?
I have it yet, but I'm going to.
They had NIL support and continue to have it.
But of all the surprise, and all of them surprised me,
and Virginia fans should be ecstatic over those three teams.
I mean, you can't get much better if you're a Virginia fan right now.
They all did just incredible jobs,
and I salute all three of those head coaches for taking advantage of the situation.
I'll say the,
the surprise team of the three, football, men's basketball, women's basketball,
and the best overall program, football, men's basketball, women's basketball.
For me, it's the same one.
It's football.
The 11 wins historic.
I mean, it's, they had only won 10 games once in their history.
Exactly.
11 wins historic.
Yeah.
Football team.
most of the fan base said let's get to seven six seven wins get bowl eligible
11 and playing a big time bowl and winning a big time bowl is is monumental yeah
playing for the ac c championship yeah i mean it's it's it's a story and and i had this
conversation this morning uh with uh a uh the gentleman that was working the uh checkout counter
at a local store this morning.
And he straight up said to me,
this is a guy that grew up in Charlestonville
that bleeds orange and blue.
Loves UVA.
What a great seven months it's been.
Couldn't ask for much more.
Couldn't ask for much more.
And he was even over now
because it had been some time,
the bitterness of how men's basketball ended,
except 30 wins.
And he made the comment, he goes,
and they're primed for a phenomenal run next year
with what we got coming back.
Absolutely.
And you think about this.
I'll say this to the viewers and listeners
and pass it to the man who knows better than everyone else.
The namesake of jerry rackliff.com.
You got football right now.
It's got two starting quarterbacks.
Pittsburgh starting quarterback, Missouri starting quarterback,
fighting for the job in Charlottesville.
And Chandler Morris may come back.
You got talent on both sides of the ball.
You're riding the coattails of an ACC championship appearance.
Was it the Gator Bowl?
Yes.
Gator Bowl victory.
And you're well-funded NIL.
Over an SEC team.
Over an SEC team.
Where you then took their starting quarterback.
Yeah.
And then you got a men's basketball program that's got four players
and they're completely well-funded.
And a women's basketball team that's got a combo guard in Camor Johnson and Mo
that is one of the most electrifying players in women's basketball.
Absolutely.
She became a national name overnight.
She was a national name.
She was a Cinderella, a darling, a face of basketball.
Yeah.
Every TV network wanted to sit down with her and get her thoughts on things.
Yeah.
She has so much charisma.
If this, for these three programs, if this was a race,
if I'm making a parallel to a foot race,
and last year for the three programs,
if they were starting the foot race on the goal line,
this year, if it's a foot race,
they're starting at least on the 20-yard line,
maybe the 30-yard line.
I mean, it's just, it's fantastic, Cooney.
Yeah, again, it's one of the golden eras
in Virginia athletic history.
I mean, we had some of that in the late 80s
through the mid-90s in football,
and certainly basketball with the Ralph era just before that in the early 80s.
And then extended that decade from 80 to 90 was pretty spectacular in both sports.
And then both of them extended into the 90s.
had a little bit of that during the Tony Bennett run spectacular.
A couple of good seasons in football, but nothing to match what they did this year.
And so now this is yet another golden era with football and basketball and women's basketball,
which hasn't been prominent since the days.
of Debbie Ryan. Yeah, it's been a long time. And the common denominator here is NIL funding.
No question. It's the common denominator. Comments are coming in quickly. You have a former player
watching the program, Gus Gerard. Gus. Yeah. I went to Gus. Doug Doughty and I stopped off in Gus's
bar up in Pennsylvania on the way to a Virginia pit basketball game, and he treated us to
dinner and showed us all of his memorabilia from his playing career in the ABA.
He has an original ABA basketball, which there's not many of those around, I bet,
and some of his jerseys.
We had a delightful time with Gus up there.
He's watching the program.
He said, I came across your show on Facebook.
My friend Jerry Rackleff from way back in my Who playing days.
Good job and great show.
Well, thank you, Gus.
We appreciate it.
We'll have you on the show sometime.
Yeah, Gus Gerard watching the program.
He's got amazing stories.
He had an amazing basketball career.
I did a long feature on him several years ago
and was talking to a couple of people from his past that coached him.
And they said, whoever came up with the phrase,
the white man can't jump, never saw Gus Gerard play.
I like it.
I like it.
Dale says that this show is absolutely awesome.
is watching the program.
Thank you, Dale.
Philip Dowson, Scottsville, and he wants to get your take on the baseball program
and how they're doing with the new head coach.
They took it on the chin against Boston College, two of three in the L column,
but still the team's got a lot of upside.
Olivia Branch is showering you with praise.
She's wonderful.
She says, exact words.
This show is the best part of my week.
Wow.
Olivia Branch, exact words.
the Queen of Keswick.
Thank you, Olivia.
We sincerely appreciate you, Olivia Branch.
Thank you for that.
Like and share the show, Stephanie Wells-Rotes, hello.
Thank you for watching the program.
Michael Plecker, one of the Shenandoah Valley's finest backstops,
is watching the program right now.
If you have comments, put them in the feed,
and we will relay them live on air.
We promise we'll talk baseball.
Do we have our Utah guys on this week?
I do not.
We had some viewers from Utah last week.
I do not see.
Utah on the feet this week. I do see
these comments from Derek Jones.
I would love to see an attach
an athletic wing in the mold of
DeAndre Hunter who can score and defend.
Derek Jones also
says, football surprised me the most
too. And I think this team has a chance
to be very good again this upcoming
season. And Derek Jones
and Kenneth Knuckles is watching the
program on YouTube. He says,
Jerry Rackleff, you are the absolute best.
Well, thank you, Kenneth.
We appreciate that. The absolute
best. And he wants to highlight Kenneth
Knuckles the fantastic win
for Lars Tiffany in the men's
lacrosse program beating number
one Notre Dame. Yeah.
To get back on track a little bit.
Yeah, Notre Dame has
ended or heard some of Virginia's
better seasons
over the years and it was a little
payback time they were beating
Kevin Corrigan's team
and
very timely for
Lars' program to
maybe that'll kickstart them toward a great finish.
And who knows, maybe they get things going.
Maybe they'll be a true host in the NCAA finals
or Final four here in Scott Stadium,
which could be, that could be incredible if that happened.
And that's going to happen this,
and here very shortly with the World Cup.
Memorial weekend.
That's right. That's right.
With the World Cup interrupting things in the Northeast and the Philly area,
Scott Stadium's going to host out as a result to the benefit of Charlottesville's economy,
which certainly needs it right now, like all local economies.
Cliff Daisy's watching the program.
He says, gentlemen, it is good to be back.
I have been listening on the road.
I enjoy this show very, very much, and I'm very proud of what Ryan Odom's first year accomplished.
And I'm eager for football season.
and I renewed my season tickets as a result.
Cool.
Yeah, Ray's a really good dude.
I wonder if he's out on the water this morning.
Cliff Daisy, I think he's traveling while listening to us, Cliff Daisy.
He's traveling, yeah.
Any commentary you want to offer on baseball?
And maybe some updates on what Jerry Rackliff.com has for baseball.
Well, you know, Boston College is a good, they're a good program.
It's not like that they got beat by a lousy team or anything.
BC's pretty good.
And, you know, you go to Boston this time of year.
I doubt that the weather was very nice up there.
And the BC guys are used to it, not making excuses.
But they bounced back and didn't get swept.
You're going to lose a series every.
now and then whether you're the better program or not.
And I mean, it happens.
I don't think there's any reason to panic.
Big, big weekend coming up.
I believe Florida State's coming to town.
And that's one you always like to have in your hip pocket if you can pull it off and win
that series.
That could give you a springboard.
into the rest of the conference season.
We have some breaking news.
Oh, yeah?
That's come across the wire here.
During the I Love Seville,
during the Jerry and Jerry show on the I Love Seville Network,
Malcolm Brogden has now been named a Strategic Advisor
to the men's basketball program.
Wow.
Press release just published.
Virginia, former Virginia All-American and NBA standout Malcolm Brogden
was named Strategic Adversic.
advisor to men's basketball, Ryan Odom announced moments ago. Ryan Odom, quote, we are thrilled to
welcome Malcolm to grounds in this newly created position in our program. Malcolm will serve our
program as a special advisor bringing a wealth of knowledge, leadership, and expertise from a successful
nine-year MBA career in an all-American career at the University of Virginia. Remember, Malcolm
Brockton viewers and listeners led Virginia to 111-11 win.
four NCAA tournaments, two ACC regular season titles,
one ACC tournament championship.
He was a unanimous first team All-American
and the NABC defensive player of the year in 2016,
a three-time all-ACC selection,
and one of the first players to be named
ACCC Player of the Year
and ACC defensive player of the year in the same season.
He is now a strategic advisor to Ryan Odom,
and he's also Malcolm Brogden, married to former Virginia volleyball standout,
Tori Janakowski, now Brogden.
Significant news right there, Hootie.
It is.
It's obviously a new position on the staff, but it's pretty cool.
I have Malcolm back in the fold.
I wonder what he might end up doing after basketball.
all.
And so it's a good landing spot.
I don't know if he may be interested in becoming a coach himself someday or not,
but he certainly would be a good one, I think.
Oh, my God, he'd be a great coach.
He could do anything you want.
I mean, he's such a unique person that came through here.
Just a really good guy and very conscientious of his fellow man.
always wanting to do things.
I think he helped with the,
Chris Long's with the Waterboys program over in Africa.
And he always talked about wanting to do things to give back.
Hell of a basketball player.
I mean, he was as competitive as anybody you want to talk about.
and had a major impact on Virginia basketball
and Virginia basketball history.
So it's great to have people like that
involved in the program again.
And welcome back Malcolm.
Welcome back Malcolm Brogden.
Would be absolutely fantastic to see Malcolm Brogden around town,
whether at the Aberdeen Barn,
a fantastic partner of Jerry Rackliff.com.
My favorite place.
Enjoying a prime rib.
Yeah.
We love you, Angela, or maybe in line at Bodo's Bagels, maybe shopping at Charlottes Sanitary
Supply, or just walking the downtown mall.
Yeah.
That'd be pretty cool.
I'm sure he's done them all.
I know.
That would be really cool.
So if you're just tuning into the program, Malcolm Brogden, a strategic advisor, it was just announced
to Ryan Odom, just named.
Philip Dow says this is an absolute wonderful show, the Jerry and Jerry show.
Viewers and listeners, let us know your thoughts and we'll relay them live.
on it. We appreciate your kind
words. It's all over the feelings.
We really do appreciate it. It really means the
absolute world to us.
This is a question for you,
an editorial question,
interestingly, from Jennifer
and Richmond. How will
Jerry Rackleff.com
shift its coverage now that
basketball is over?
Well, we'll... Good question.
Yeah. We'll focus
heavily on spring football
until it ends April the 18th.
because of the tremendous interest that evolved and developed from last year.
I haven't seen this much interest in Virginia football since at least 2019
when they won the Coastal Division and ended up in a nice bowl,
in the Orange Bowl, for goodness sake.
How cool was that?
gave Florida a decent game.
So, you know, there's tremendous interest in football again in this town,
which has been a long time.
And we get plenty of opportunities with the coaching staff and players.
Talk to Cam Courtney yesterday.
We'll be doing a story on him.
We also talked to Platt, the defensive back, who transferred here from Army,
and a really good talker.
We'll have a story on hand.
We talked to Coach Ruzinski.
We talked to Coach Kitchens.
Stories abound.
We'll have plenty of those through football.
We'll also be, as soon as the transfer portal opens, we'll be all over that.
I think it's the day after the national championship game.
We'll turn up the heat on baseball and lacrosse
and try to hit the other spring sports as well.
But the movers and shakers are football and men's basketball,
and that's where the – that's what really moves the needle,
and that's where all the interest lies.
and so we'll be all over that as long as, I mean, they're year-round sports now,
so we never take our eyes off that, but we'll also be looking at other stuff as well
and try to maybe do some pieces on yesteryear,
some things that have popped up through the years.
And there's another story I'm working on.
I can't tell you what it is,
because somebody might steal it from me,
but involving a former UVA football player
that I think will be a very popular story coming up
in the next week or two.
While the show is going on now,
we've gained new subscribers.
Awesome. Thank you.
And while the show is going on right now on jerry rackliff.com,
one of our team members,
our glue guy, has edited, produced, and published,
and now syndicated a fantastic piece on Coach Rudd,
putting together another solid defense in spring drills.
So give them a snapshot,
a tease of what the story on Coach Rudd is.
That's on Jerry Ratcliffe.com.
That literally is being syndicated while you're sitting here,
talking into a microphone,
offering commentary to nine different states
in the United States of America.
Yeah, Coach Rudd was really fired up yesterday.
He's an excitable guy when he wants to be.
And he was just talking about trying to instill the same qualities in this defense
and kind of rebuilding it.
I mean, he has several players back,
but a lot of new faces that he has to blend together
and get on the same page.
and I think his terminology he used yesterday
and we want to build a fast, intelligent, tough group
and that started a couple weeks ago
and they had their first scrimmage this past Saturday at Scott Stadium.
They had 68 plays that they defended,
and there's a lot of situational football,
so he's putting them in spots already.
brought in a ton of talent from the transfer portal.
Those two Michigan guys are going to be fun to watch, I guarantee it.
And just some other guys that are going to be really good, I think.
And, you know, again, as we mentioned earlier, I mean, look at what Steve Finch did last year.
It was amazing.
They were number 20 in the nation in total defense,
third in the ACC behind Miami, the national runner-up, and Louisville.
They only gave up 309 yards a game.
And they were number 22 in the nation in scoring defense,
giving up 19 and a half points a game.
That's almost impossible in today's modern football.
Right.
And they were number two in the ACC in that category only to Miami.
And we know what kind of defense Miami had.
So he's trying to duplicate that, if not make it better, for this year.
And this story kind of details what he's thinking.

Cliff Daisy says, it's too cold to be on the water right now,
but he'll email you a pick of,
from the Chesapeake Bay when I put the Cavalier in the water,
which is the name of his boat.
Yeah.
The Cavalier.
I want to try to go see him sometime this spring or summer.
Just, I've never been to that particular area
that he lives on on the eastern shore.
I've been to the eastern shore, but not to that particular area that he lives in.
James Watson shares the Malcolm Brogden news.
It's now going viral.
Malcolm Brogden, a strategic advisor just named moments ago for Ryan Odom
in this University of Virginia men's basketball program.
Malcolm Brogden, one of the greatest players in Virginia history.
Bob Yarborough, King of Redfields is watching the program.
We love you, Bobby Yarbrough.
Sincerely mean that.
Thank you for watching the show.
When I was at the newspaper,
and they decided to retire Malcolm's jersey number.
We did a special section just on Malcolm Brogden,
and I remember he asked us for 50 copies of that to give to his family and stuff,
which we were more than happy to do.
I was going to say, yeah, right.
But he's just such a thankful, gracious person,
And it's not only great for UVA to have him in the,
but just for Charlottesville,
to have him in the community.
You can't ask for better guys than that to be in your community.
Having Malcolm Brogman's in the community,
having Chris Long's in the community,
I get a, I often, after dropping our oldest son off at school,
he's a second grader,
will fill up the family Ford Explorer at the Tiger Fuel on Preston Avenue.
I love that place.
There's a cashier that works there named Brenda.
She's in her early 60s.
One of the most positive people I've ever been around.
Always love running into her.
And routinely I'm running into or I'm seeing,
I'm seeing Travis Watson filling up his Toyota at that Tiger Fuel.
Travis was a great player.
On Preston Avenue.
There's a lot of former players, Sean Singletary, for example.
A lot of former Wally Walker.
Barry Parkhill.
Barry Parkhill.
A lot of former players and athletes still local to Charleston.
Yeah, there's a ton of them.
I mean, we can put a list together that's quite lengthy.
We could.
If we really sat down and thought about it.
Yeah.
In all kinds of sports.
Right, right, in all kinds of sports.
My friend, what do you have, you've kind of given us a tease already.
Give us an idea of what they can expect content-wise coming up on Jerry Racklop.com.
Well, we'll be talking.
We'll be doing some more from what Coach Rudd said yesterday,
also from Des Kitchens talking about the offense that he's running
with all the new personnel and what he's looking for from some of the groups.
We'll be a waiting word on the Chandler-Morris thing.
That could happen almost any time now.
Cam Courtney could be his breakout year.
And he was a guy that actually entered the portal and came back as a wide receiver.
And Platt, just how he's advanced since he came here from Army and how meaningful he's going to be.
He's trying to win that job, that spur position, which is kind of a,
a unicorn position of kind of a safety corner linebacker mixed into one.
Again, we'll be looking forward to seeing what's going on with the portal,
the search for a new associate head coach, assuming they'll go that way.
Hopefully we'll get an opportunity to talk to Malcolm in the near future.
about his new role.
And spring sports,
it's almost weird.
They start so early that by the time the basketball is over with,
some of the seasons are almost to the point of postseason.
It's crazy.
But we'll be taking some looks at some of those sports as well.
So we have plenty coming your way.
Nick Pollock, thank you for liking the show.

editing, producing, publishing,
and syndicating a football story.
Awesome.
Dynamic media.
Judah is the man.
Judah is the man.
He's Jerry Rackleff, and his website's jerry rackliff.com.
I'm Jerry Miller, and the I Love Seville Show is up at 1230 p.m.
So long, everybody.
Thank you, sir.
Same to you.
