Starting point is 00:00:00 And welcome to the everyday faith show. This is Jeff Gaffney, your host. Thank you so much for tuning in with us. Happy Thanksgiving week to all our viewers and listeners. And today we have a special guest for you. It's John Cuesenberry, one of my favorite people. John Q is what I refer to him because I was going to butcher the pronunciation of his last name. But John Q was with us.
Starting point is 00:00:37 He is the pastor of the dwelling place church in Charlottesville and also the leader of the community prayer room. A great man of God, somebody I've really enjoyed getting to know. John, thanks for being on the show. It's great to be here, Jeff. I have to roll back in time a little bit because my first time meeting you, I actually didn't meet you in person. I saw you on television on Fox News, and I want our listeners and viewers to hear this story.
Starting point is 00:01:07 Oh, wow. You know the day. The day that hate came to town, there was a terrible riot in Charlottesville in 2017. And I, like most people in Charlottesville, were watching it on TV, and you know it's just a few miles from our home we see all this craziness going on and all of a sudden the camera tunes in and there is john quesonbury playing his guitar singing praise and worship music in the middle of a crazy riot can you give us sort of a little bit of background and your view on that day just kind of cycle in and cycle out on this if you would well when i think about that day um a lot of
Starting point is 00:02:03 thoughts come to mind the first thing is um we heard that you shouldn't go downtown yeah don't go downtown right now because it's going to be crazy and uh i have this discernment this you know when you pray and you ask god lord god what are you doing he said i want you down there want you go down there And we originally had two vans full of people, 21 people sign up to go with us down there. And the plan was that we were just going to go down there and we were going to worship and we were just going to spend time revealing, you know, to be an encouraging voice to worship God in the middle of chaos. We were going to do that. And then we were also going to give out water bottles and just, you know, we just felt lead to go down there. Wow.
Starting point is 00:02:51 We felt like it was, okay, it's big in Christian circles, spiritual warfare. What is that? You know, we don't shout at the devil when we do spiritual warfare. As it turns out, you reveal what God's doing. You just reveal who he is. And you place that in the middle of the chaos. And so we went down there in the morning. We hopped in the van and went down there.
Starting point is 00:03:18 There was 12 of us, exactly 12 of us. Wow. And we got in the circle, we started worshiping. And that's how it started. I just, I'll never forget it because, I mean, there you are somebody who, I guess once I heard this comment from somebody, they said, preach the gospel and when necessary use words. It's like, you know what I'm saying? You were like demonstrating it.
Starting point is 00:03:48 A lot of people talk about it. there you were in the middle of, I mean, theoretically, your life was at risk. Well, that's what they said. It didn't feel that way. But as things went along and there were paintballs flying and there were people throwing cans that were full of cement, I know Joe Thomas covered some of that. Actually, I picked up one. So there was a lot of, and there were people with loaded weapons. It was crazy. It's interesting. It's interesting. because people were there to disrupt, and then there were people there who were there to disrupt the disruptors. And so I felt like what we brought was a positive, encouraging environment.
Starting point is 00:04:36 And we stood in the middle of that, and people couldn't understand what we were doing. Okay. It was frustrating to them that we weren't reacting to anything, that we were actually there speaking. We also made several declarations about. the Lordship of Jesus. We also made declarations, read scriptures. We sang songs that declared the Lordship of Jesus. Because we've heard God say over and over again, and everybody knows God's Lord of all the earth. And Jesus is Lord over Charlottesville. We just need to, and when I say that, a lot of people think, well, he's talking about some kind of theocracy. but actually that's what the Bible says is that he has a kingdom and that kingdom he asks us to pray
Starting point is 00:05:24 may your kingdom come may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven amen so if we want his kingdom to be on the earth what does that look like and it doesn't look like having a pope or what so we were there declaring that lordship we were there declaring a positive message and we were surrounded by people who were revving up and angry and fighting each other there's a couple of passages in the bible that come to mind when i think about your story um first for you to be energized to go down to the protest and the riot i think about the first chapter of joshua strong and courageous for the lord will be with you wherever you go did that did that enter into your thinking at all well i don't know that you know i'm trying to be too detailed but
Starting point is 00:06:13 I don't know if you remember this, but there was a KKK rally not too far before that. And we went down and we did the same thing. We circled up and did worship. And there were people there that were kind of, and when we were thinking about going down, there were people who were just crazy telling us we shouldn't. But absolutely, we felt called to be there. And the courageousness isn't kind of something. you pump up or whatever it's like you have to know you're in the right place at the right time
Starting point is 00:06:47 you have to know who you are and what you're here for and i said this last night at a at a dinner is that if god calls you to do something he enables you to do it amen so it's it's this wild thing of knowing who you are if once you know who you are that you're called by god to do something and then you go okay what is it and he calls you to do it there's only there's only one blessed there's only one purposeful answer to that okay let me give you this passage and tell me if this at least fits what what you were thinking about that particular day psalm 168 in the voice translation says i will not live in fear and i shall not abandon my calling oh my goodness is that spot absolutely that that's absolutely spot on if you abandon your calling you lose who you
Starting point is 00:07:37 are yeah yeah and and and the battle on the front end of the that verse is the fear there was a lot of us right who were well everybody's afraid are you afraid of people around you or are you afraid of god the bible says the fear the fear the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom and people say what's more like reverence no it's fear it's true fear and that fear is this you don't want to disappoint him you know who he is you know what he's provided for you in the world in your life you know that everything you have comes from him so that whole idea of fearing god this okay if you fear god you don't fear anything else but if you don't fear god you fear everything else that's interesting
Starting point is 00:08:27 because they can come and take they can take your stuff and they can make you alone but if you fear god you're you're never alone nobody can take what you really have amen amen Let me give you another passage it comes to mind. When I thought of you singing praise and worship in the middle of a crazy riot in downtown Charlottesville, the Bible also says in the Psalms that praise will silence the voice of the enemy. Oh my. Does that resonate with you? Right.
Starting point is 00:09:02 It's really true. Most people experience this. Like, what are they doing? But they couldn't take their eyes off of it. like why are they here like it unsettled everybody the protesters and the counter protesters like what is going on and and actually when we began the the den of what the craziness it was going around us became almost silent for about 40 minutes and people were just like wondering why are these people here and they couldn't fight against us because we weren't doing what they thought we should
Starting point is 00:09:30 be doing it was crazy because it to the world it looks really crazy to do stuff like worship but see God's worthy. He gave us everything we have, our breath. And then the idea of worship actually is this deep spiritual discipline that just overwhelms people because it acknowledges who we are. You lose all of your entitlement. You have to re-identify who you are. Because if God's given us everything, he gave us our breath. Then you just have to go, wait a minute. So it was, it was unsettling I think I'm sorry I don't know whether I answered your question no it's good this is the everyday faith show thank you all for tuning in we're here with John Cuesenberry and we're talking about his fearless entourage his group 12 of them that went
Starting point is 00:10:26 down to the unite the right protest and started singing praise and worship music in the middle of the biggest riot that Charlottesville has, I would say, faced in a long time. Let me go to another passage that is a passage that has hit me right in the face as a passage of something that I'm very challenged by. And it seems like you have walked this out. And that's why you're one of my heroes. Matthew 5 starts at 43. I'm reading this. in the passion translation. Your ancestors also have been taught, love your neighbors and hate the one who hates you.
Starting point is 00:11:13 Oh, wow. However, I say to you, love your enemy, bless the one who curses you, do something wonderful for the one who hates you, and responds to the very ones who persecute you by praying for them. Oh, my goodness. This is the hardest thing, Jeff.
Starting point is 00:11:31 It's why? you're my hero is I have not been able to walk that out or I feel like God is calling a lot of us to step into this Matthew 544 step into this passage in your life and you did it and you do it in this time it's essential and first of all I don't get it right all the time for sure there's some big moments big fails my wife and church can tell you but uh but over it it is something divine you can't love somebody that's fighting against you you can't forgive somebody who's done something to to ruin your life or or cause you pain and hardship it's it's not humanly possible it doesn't seem like it's going to work
Starting point is 00:12:21 there has to be a dispensation from heaven there has to be a spiritual depth that that does this and most people can't do it they really can't because they don't know the source of love. Okay, it's something that wells up in you. Like I used to say, when I was a kid, they used to say, have you found your peace with God? They would talk about this.
Starting point is 00:12:42 Have you found your peace with God? And dang it, that's right. You have to get a peace with God. It's a basic human reality. It's not even Christian or, I mean, it's Christian, yes, there's one way. Jesus is the only way to the Father. But the reality is our spiritual journey
Starting point is 00:13:02 has to be real and it has to be personal and that well produces this incredible opportunity to love and respond to difficulty otherwise it's just you and why why forgive it doesn't make any sense yeah man let's go a little bit further with this because this is a great transition we're heading into thanksgiving week oh wow and for a lot of people it's a very joyful time right family food food fun great memories right but there are many in our community that this is one of the hardest times of the year if you are coming from the position of a broken family broken relationship broken broken broken what would you say what would you say to somebody who's listening to
Starting point is 00:13:57 this show who doesn't yet have peace with God right and they don't have it seems like everywhere there go there's a storm that they're stepping into what would you say to that person who wants to get right with god like they're hearing your story and they're hearing how you were able to step into and pray and worship and praise during a riot and their their life right now feels a little bit like a riot right What do you say to those folks? Wow. This is the gospel.
Starting point is 00:14:37 And most people think of the gospel is, if you die tonight, would you go to heaven or hell? And that's not the gospel. You know, the gospel is God loves you. He has a plan for you. And actually, it's all good for you. We think, well, I'm going to do this thing to get, well, get connected to my church or get connected to friends.
Starting point is 00:14:58 See, you need a spiritual grounding. otherwise you're just blowing around like especially now there's so much information we have layered information we have information people don't even process the information they have and then another information comes and you really are just at the at the mercy of this this incredible barrage of new things that just excite your mind i think we're missing the missing the whole reality of meditation of reflection we're missing that whole discipline And that has to be, that has to happen. So what happens when you get quiet?
Starting point is 00:15:34 Do you have a place, a peace with God? Do you have that connection? So this is how I would say it, is if you don't have that grounding. Introduce yourself. Say, God, I'm here. Now, people are afraid of this. I said to somebody, I said, why don't you feel, why won't you do this? He said, I'm afraid of what will happen.
Starting point is 00:15:56 See, if you're afraid of what will happen, that's the correct response. Because the fear of God is this, he shows up and he does what he wants. And the reality is, is if you open up your heart and say, God, I'm tired of being just a mind and a body, but to realize I'm a mind and a body and I'm a spirit. See, the three, we all know that there's something there that we just need. We need to have grounding. We know that that's a spiritual reality.
Starting point is 00:16:23 I talk to people and say, I don't know what it is, but I'm dissatisfied. That's it. It's your spiritual grounding. So you say, God. God, I'm here. I give my life to you. Now, he's not going to want you to say, hey, you know, I'll give it a try. Go with that.
Starting point is 00:16:38 Say, God show up. But the reality is that he's interested in you, has good plans for you. So to introduce yourself and say, hey, I'm here. Because he loves you. Thinking of the passage in Jeremiah, 29, just after, for I know the plan. I have for you. Jeremiah 29-11, if you don't know the passage, get it, read it, spend time in it. But I think it's, then it goes to 12 or 13 says, you will find me. This is God speaking to you, me, everyone. You will find me. This is his word. You will find me when you seek me
Starting point is 00:17:27 with all your heart. He is not interested in being a casual friend. And then he says, then he says later in that passage, I believe he says this, I will be found by you. I will be found by you. And so, again,
Starting point is 00:17:42 let's focus in on that person who's having a struggle in the lead up to Thanksgiving. Right. God says, I will be found by you. Now, take that a little bit further. For that particular case, that person,
Starting point is 00:17:57 who who wants to take God up on that promise, I will be found by you. How? How? So it's very important that it be authentic and real. And that after you speak to the Lord, that you actually are speaking from your heart. And the response will be that God does begin to show up.
Starting point is 00:18:24 He does begin to speak to you. And we have to learn his language because he doesn't just, you know, oftentimes, and in fact, the best way is to open up the Bible. I would recommend read John, the book of John. You start out with John, John, read the book of John. John was the guy that stood beside Jesus. He's the only one of the four gospel writers who was right there. So he gives the heart, the passion side of it. It's been called the passionate gospel.
Starting point is 00:18:53 But if you read it, now people say, well, I've read it before. didn't make sense. You have to know him and then he talks to you. Oh, that's good. And he starts talking to you through the word and, uh... Hold on. Say that pace again. You have to know him. You have to know him. And then? Then he talks to you. Mm-hmm. Yeah. It's, it's kind of funny
Starting point is 00:19:11 because most people feel like the relationship with God is really complex. But it's not. It's a friendship. Nobody wants to be, nobody wants to be put off, you know. Hey, I'm, when I'm feeling better or when things are going really bad, I'm going to, you know, it's a cultivated friendship so that when you're actually going after it, like if I want to be friends with Jeff Gaffney, I call him up and say, hey, Jeff, Jeff, I like to get together Thursday. I may not hear it back right away. Hey, Jeff, I usually do, but, but, but, but, but I get a text like, is Thursday work? And you go, well, yeah, this week's kind of busy. What about next
Starting point is 00:19:47 week? See, that's the kind of thing God wants us to do with him. Seek him with all of our heart. Amen. means that it's a real thing for you because most people think God's in a church or he's he's he's at a disciplinary he makes you do stuff that you don't want to do actually the stuff that he wants you to do is really good for you and it may be hard but man it causes incredible purpose and power and passion in your life you know and anyway yeah it happens if you call out he'll answer there's a scripture says call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things that you haven't even thought of yet. That's the John version of that verse, but you haven't even thought of the things
Starting point is 00:20:28 that he has for you. That's good. Let's go into one of our listeners or viewers is wondering, well, you know, Christianity, great, but what about Buddhism or Islam or, you know, any of the other Hindu, why is there just one way? That would be a question. Why is there just one way to God? Yeah. Well, I did- Why is it so exclusive like that? Yeah. Yeah. That's a really good question because I struggled with that. I did, I did Transcendental Meditation. I was a pastor's kid. I kind of said, well, it can't be just that simple. Just talk to God. You know, it's got to be more philosophical. so I did Transcendental Meditation and I would just open up my mind and become one with nothing or just become open and I had a lot of experiences. It was pretty incredible. I do believe that
Starting point is 00:21:35 there, the way I would answer that is that there are a lot of spiritual entities according to the Bible. There's a, if you believe in good, you have to believe in evil. So what's the source of evil? Well, the Bible says that there is a source of evil. And you have to resist the evil and seek the good. Resist the devil and he'll flee from you. Everybody thinks that the devil is a guy. They picture him with a pitchfork and all this stuff. But actually, he's an angel of light.
Starting point is 00:22:07 It's like something that feels right. So cue me up with a question again. No, it's a difficult one. it was why the exclusivity, why Christianity is the, why Jesus is the only way to God. You know when you're talking about something and it just awls you and you get, it just pulled me in there a second. Sorry, this is perfect. So the source of good and purpose and power is God. And Jesus came from God and he became us. He became like a person. And then he died. on a cross. Now, why do you have to die? Because our sin needs to be paid for. So the reality is, is that there's nothing, there's nothing that can pay for, for what we've done. We've all offended
Starting point is 00:22:58 God. We've all offended each other. We've done terrible things at the other, terrible thoughts. And how do you deal with that? In other religions, there's, I mean, I really respect Buddhism, really respect Judaism. I really respect the discipline. and the reality and those things. But there's not, there's not, the thing that's missing is the redemptive thing where we don't stay where we are, where we actually enter into a new life.
Starting point is 00:23:30 And Jesus offers that. And it's not like there's only one path and you have to work at finding it. God speaks to everybody. But he draws us to himself through Jesus. Amen. And because you've heard of Jesus and he is attractive to you.
Starting point is 00:23:46 you, and you know him for who he is, if you experience that, you have to respond because that's the way. And, yeah, so many people feel like, well, that's too exclusive. But actually, if we refuse it, then it's on us. We have to respond to the invitation that Jesus gives us. What about for somebody who's struggling, theological with, why did Jesus have to die on the cross? Oh, my. I mean, why would God of love?
Starting point is 00:24:22 You say your God is a God of love, right? 1 Corinthians 13. Yeah. The chapter on love. Oh, yeah. Oh, and what you just mentioned, the disciple John, God is love, I believe, in 1 John is one of his passages. God is love, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:45 But why would a God of love require the payment of his son on the cross? I'm getting a little deep here. No, no, this is good. You want to take it? No, no, I want to take it. So there's a little wind up for this pitch, but all civilizations understand blood sacrifice. In 1,200, 1,300.
Starting point is 00:25:08 That's good. So the blood sacrifice is not only a Judeo-Christian. No. Well, as texts were sacrificing in this, before we, before Europeans ever showed up here, 800 years before that they were sacrificing humans, you know, the Mayans, the African traditions, the early Celts, the, you look at societies, every ancient society understands that there is no life without death. I'll say it again, there's no life without death. You can't eat a live plant, and most people don't like to hear it. But every piece of meat that you eat is a dead animal. It's been sacrificed. Their death produces our life.
Starting point is 00:25:50 Now, this is something that most people who spend too much time on the Internet don't understand. That you have to go out, if I do hunting in the fall, don't hate, go out and I go hunting. And it's a basic discipline because you understand there is a sacrifice that has to be made to provide for our. ourselves physically, we don't understand that there is a sacrifice that has to be made to atone for us spiritually. And Jesus brought that sacrifice. It's good. Yeah. Amen. He beat death. Amen. And we can beat death. Amen. A offshoot of this conversation, what do you say to the listener who is intrigued by the whole idea, the born again experience springs as you just mentioned new life a forgiveness of all your sins the rap sheet that you've
Starting point is 00:26:51 struggled with the guilt and shame in your life that you're carrying all of that gets broken and disposed of and god says in his word that he remembers your sins no more that's the key right so what do you say to a listener who is is struggling with everything that they've done. And I think we're talking about now the feeling of unworthiness. Oh, my goodness. What do you say to that list? Well, we aren't, we aren't worthy.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Let's deal with it. Most people spend a lot of time trying to tell you you're worthy. And if you think that you're worthy or if you work harder at you're worthy, you know, I'm wonderful, I'm wonderful, I'm wonderful. You know, that kind of stuff reminds me the beginning of a movie. The guys sitting there going, I'm, I'm, I'm, I feel good. I feel great. I feel wonderful. You don't feel good. You don't feel great. You don't feel wonderful. Guess why? Because you're not. Okay, this is a provision in the gospel. This is a given in the gospel. People don't like to hear that they're sinners. The word sin is like next to nationalism. I can't think of a dirtier word. I don't know what word is the worst. But when you talk about sin, people think of this condemning reality. No, it's real. It's real. We either by, oh,
Starting point is 00:28:11 or commission are on the outs with people and the universe, God, on a regular basis. We miss it. And trying to hide it or think it better or whatever. It has to be atoned for. And God himself atoned for that. God himself made a provision for us. And we entered that provision. And that's what it's sin. Yeah, it exists. I sin this morning. I didn't want to, but I had a bad attitude. And I got, God, help me out. There's a writing that happens when you're in relationship with God. And it doesn't mean you're holier than now.
Starting point is 00:28:50 In fact, that's actually a sin. To look down on people, you know, I saw people hearing around. God hates homosexuals. That is absolutely counter to the gospel. The gospel, God loves everybody. And the reality is, is he loves all of us enough not to leave us in a depraved, discouraging, horrible state. but he gives us a way of a redemption, atonement
Starting point is 00:29:15 to actually experience the abundant life. Jesus said, I've come to give life and give it more abundantly. So it's not a religious thing. In fact, religious people put Jesus on the cross. He's not after a religious expression. A religious expression is so distracting. It has to be real and personal. And then the
Starting point is 00:29:31 next step, which is really difficult, is being in community. So I went way off topic there. No, that's good. That's good. I am going to shift uh for a second just because i'm interested um when you read how many times would you say you've read the bible just pick a number that you were saying it's in the ballpark that i've that i've actually read it from cover to cover i would i would say five or six but in terms of reading reading sections
Starting point is 00:30:01 uh yeah many more times than that but studying the bible is is really key and you read it study it every day um every day this morning i read i read the end of second samuel getting ready to go into first kings and then i also read in uh in romans i think i think i'm i think i'm on romans 13 but yeah you read passages the lord direct you too with that but you have to get the word of god inside you because not only does god speak to you in your heart and your mind but it he speaks to you clearly through the word the word is the primary gauge so you have to hear god that way so hebrews chapter four the word of god is alive and active Can you speak to that?
Starting point is 00:30:43 Can you testify to the truth of that? Absolutely. There's so many times in my life where I have felt or been inclined to do exactly opposite of what's right. And you just go, this isn't going to work. This is counterintuitive. But then if you choose, okay,
Starting point is 00:31:01 the Bible says we choose to forgive one another. We don't feel like it. Because you never feel like forgiving. You choose to be righteous. you choose to do what's right. What happens is there's a shift in your life. It happens, and it's not easy, but as you walk in the path, there's a scripture that says,
Starting point is 00:31:21 trust of the Lord, don't lean on your own understanding, but in all your ways, reference him, and he will move the stuff out of the path. Make your path straight. Preverbs 4? Yes, it doesn't mean that things are going to get easier. It means that it'll be clear where to walk. so so don't lean on your own understanding because the stuff that you're thinking yeah
Starting point is 00:31:45 particularly if you're listening to a lot of negative voices the stuff you put in there comes out but if you're listening to that stuff you get off track you have to reference the lord hear the lord and he's saying good stuff a lot of people feel like that nagging condemning voice is god no that's the devil he's always giving you opportunities to step into peace and direction and vision but yeah yeah do you have to reference god you hear what he says you walk in truth it's a powerful way to live well you hear it from john queszenberry here on the everyday faith show that it is possible to have a relationship with god and yes to hear from god yeah right yeah amen um so as many times as you've read the bible oh that was the question i lost the question that's not it's not more now
Starting point is 00:32:38 Here's the new question. Who does John Quesemberry identify with? Like, who do you parachute yourself in? And either say you can take it either way. Who is either like your hero of the Bible or somebody that you can say, oh, that's me? Hands down, David. David. Yes.
Starting point is 00:33:01 Musician. Man after God's own heart. Warrior, Messer up, big time. Yes. wasn't the best father but god redeemed his life and i'll tell you what i've identified with that guy so much i don't you love to read the songs as a result of that favorite song oh my heart pants that this yeah uh what is it as a deer pants as a deer pants for i couldn't get the first few words as a deer as the deer pants for the water sew my soul pants after god and and it's just different
Starting point is 00:33:38 Is that a truth in your life? Oh, my goodness. Does that resonate and sit right there? Well, I don't know of anybody who doesn't pant for God, who doesn't have this deep desire for wholeness, and they don't get it. This milieu is, you know, Jesus said, you're aliens and visitors in this realm. If you feel really comfortable here, it's a problem, there's this calling, there's a destiny, there's a future that's divine. know the this whole understanding of the question was I'm having a hard time
Starting point is 00:34:16 staying on topic today the whole idea of of he's who identify with David amazing guy messed up a lot he kind of forgot
Starting point is 00:34:29 that he was a parent for part of his life he was a worshipper got out of his liar and just played for Jesus I tell you what that's a powerful situation in my life. That's where I encounter God. Get out my guitar and just worship. I'm in a room alone
Starting point is 00:34:42 and I've come out, change, transform, encounters with God. That's what changes you. Let's talk about this part of David's story. I'm always intrigued by this. So you have the prophet Samuel and David's father, Jesse. Oh my goodness. Jesse has, correct if I have this wrong, maybe seven sons. There's a bunch of them. A bunch of beautiful stud sons. And Samuel the Prophet comes, is led by God, that he's going to anoint the next king,
Starting point is 00:35:19 king number two of Israel. And so Samuel, so Samuel the Prophet ends up at Jesse's home. Jesse brings out, Jesse brings out all his son, except the one who's out, keeping the sheep let's go out to the one who was out the shepherd boy who's out keeping the sheep how do you think the overlooked shepherd boy felt about his life when all of the handsome studly sons are in the house being fit and and and and god used that time oh yeah with the sheep oh yeah
Starting point is 00:36:05 Those were formative years for David, the future king of Israel. And what I'm trying to do is relate this to the listener who feels left out, who feels without a purpose, that perhaps God can do something with this season, this lonely season in their life. Oh, my goodness. okay so Samuel comes in he says bring out the sons and he goes
Starting point is 00:36:42 no no no you got any more well the the one that's because back in that day the 12 13 14 year old kids
Starting point is 00:36:55 they were out with the with the sheep they were the youngest ones you didn't need to have much skill to herd sheep of course you needed to be able to use a slingshot and fight off the okay so he calls David he says this is the one anoint him and later on I think the statement is God doesn't look on the outward appearance he looks on the heart I think David this is just my opinion
Starting point is 00:37:18 I think I think David prospered and God learned teach taught him how to how to war he taught him how to be focused on on who God is no God's power because he knew who he was okay when samuel anointed david king david believed it that god had anointed him and had called him so he's out there
Starting point is 00:37:46 with the sheep with this promise see we have to know who we are see he's out there with this promise so he's learning how to hone his craft at at killing the attacking wolves and say i killed a bear i
Starting point is 00:38:02 killed a wolf. David was, when he faced Goliath, it wasn't doing anything new. Yes, right. He's like, I can kill this guy. And they're like, what are you talking about? He'd have seen the bear that I had to take out and the lion. Yeah, because he knew who he was out there. He wasn't afraid. He honed his skill in meditation prayer. He honed his skill in with a slingshot, just practical skills. And so when God brought him into his calling, he knew who he was. And he says, who is this? Who is this piece of trash, Felicit? Does he know that he's offense to the living God? I'm going to kill this guy, and today I'm going to deliver him into your hands.
Starting point is 00:38:46 He's going to go down, and he's going to go down. Now, why? It was because he knew who he was. He knew who God was. And see, that's the impossible thing in our lives. If we knew who we were, if we knew who we were created to be, we would act a lot different. So David had no identity issues in terms of his relationship with God. I think that was the key because he went after God.
Starting point is 00:39:10 And God showed him what to do. Man after God's own heart. I want to be that way. The only one in the entire Bible who carries that title? He also carried another title. And he said, and God promised him that on his throne, that a descendant of his would always sit on the throne
Starting point is 00:39:33 and Jesus was descended from David and that was a promise your lineage is going to be the king from the tribe of Judah from the tribe of Judah amen amen all right David well let's also go to this point
Starting point is 00:39:50 though because I think this is important for our viewers or listeners who are not Bible readers David was far from perfect Oh, my. Everybody starts out not perfect. Goodness, I could give you testimonies. I've been in some dark places. And you know what? You get there trying to have fun. You get there on the path that seems easiest. And you're really having a good time until you're not. Then you realize my soul's empty. My life is meaningless or it's lacking in meaning. Most, thing, the most prevalent thing that happens to me is I realize I'm a spiritual person. I'm going to live forever. You have an eternal destiny. Your spirit is going to live forever. And so the reality, just forgetting that you have a spirit is not a good idea. You have to become spiritually
Starting point is 00:40:48 alive. So yeah. I forgot the question again. This is so bad. No, let me go here though. Just for any of our listeners to understand the man after god's own heart david writer of i mean what percentage of the bible is written by david it's it's pretty well psalms was written to mostly 90% by him and then a lot was written about him yes so major major character yet he fell to adultery oh adultery he murdered Bathsheba's... Uriah, the Hittite, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and so yet
Starting point is 00:41:33 he went to the Lord and asked for forgiveness, right? Clean hands and a pure heart. Oh, he was a guy that wrote Created me a clean heart, God, and renew a right spirit within me. Don't cast me away for your presence. See the presence?
Starting point is 00:41:53 Being in relationship, being in the presence of God, having that openness between you and the holy is was his source of of life and in fact it is for everybody yeah yeah he he he was a mess up but he was also king of israel and he was also a legacy that still is is being fleshed out amen i think about um we only have a few minutes left john um as we're heading into thanksgiving yeah i like to get to this uh passage in 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 rejoice pray without ceasing oh wow and give thanks in all circumstances what do you think of that passage are you able to implement that into your life and what would you say to the believer who's who's hearing those words but I don't want to live it out rejoice
Starting point is 00:42:55 pray without ceasing and give thanks in all circumstances well um i could talk for 20 minutes on each one of those but but but 90 seconds i'll respond to the to the give thanks in all things good um the the reality the reality is you don't you cannot give thanks for all things the reality is it's that that disposition that you live in this the scriptures say we're seated with him in the heavens. And I could talk about that for 20 minutes because being close to Jesus seated with him, you have intimacy, you have perspective, and you have authority. Now you don't just happen into that. That's a disposition. That's a perspective that you maintain because there's a lot of dark situations. My wife is dealing with tremendous health problems. And as a family, we're dealing
Starting point is 00:43:53 with some dark times but the reality is our disposition is one that there is good for us and that we live out of this hope this incredible understanding that god is good and that he's present and that he's working his purposes out in all things again it's it's an identity thing it has you have to know who you are because if you look around you say this is me i mean you take your cues from the surrounding so give thanks in all things amen you have to thank god because he's with you and he's guiding you and he does give you a disposition of victory. John Q, I want to say a quick Thanksgiving blessing to you, your entire family, all of our viewers and listeners. May the Lord bless you and keep you. May his face shine upon you.
