Welcome to the Jerry and Jerry Show.
Thank you kindly for joining us.
My name is Jerry Miller.
It's a pleasure to connect with you guys
through the I Love Seville Network
on a show that spotlights the Virginia Sports Hall of Famer
Jerry Hootie Rackleff, the namesake of Jerry Rackleff.com.
A lot to cover on today's broadcast,
including Transfer Portal news
that very much impacts the Gator Bowl
this Saturday evening.
Missouri's starting quarterback has said, you know what, I'm not going to play in this contest.
I'm going to enter in the transfer portal.
I'm going to chase a paycheck.
And now he is being rumored in link to Blacksburg, Virginia Tech, and newly minted head coach James Franklin,
who initially recruited the young man to Penn State and Happy Valley.
We will unpack that storyline and how it impacts this college football game on Saturday.
The line has moved.
seven to minus four because of this transfer portal news. We'll talk Matt Zolars, the head, the quarterback
for Missouri. He's a true freshman. He'll start the contest. We'll talk keys to the game for
offense, defense, and special teams. A 10 and 3 Virginia football team will face its stiffest
test yet in Missouri. And we'll talk basketball. Virginia hammered American University last
night at the John Paul Jones Arena. And now we're looking at a basketball team that is sniffing
the top 20 and we're all asking us asking the question how good is the program and could this team be an
a cc contender with the likes of duke university who suffered a loss earlier in the week juda wickhauer
behind the camera juda wickhauer those headlines are in your inbox my friend let's go to studio
camera and then let's go to a two shot as we welcome the star of the show jerry rackliff to the
program. We start with the same question every morning, every show. First, I say, good morning,
Merry Christmas. It's pleasant to be in your company, per usual, my friend. You had a nice seat
at the John Paul Jones Arena with what was an absolute tail whoopin. Absolutely. Anywhere you
want to go, my friend. I just, well, salutations to you and our wonderful producer over there,
and I noticed you have a crystal ball.
You think it was odd when you walked in.
You're like, what's this doing here?
I was wondering, but I was hoping you can see something in the future there.
I wish I could see the future for Judah and Hooty and I.
We all win the lottery, my friend.
That would be one.
That would be nice, right?
You got to play it.
I haven't played it.
I haven't played it either, my friend.
I need to buy some tickets.
Yeah, last night was a good old fashion butt-whippin.
I didn't expect it to be too much, but 95 to 51 over American,
it was glad to see Testy Ritter get back on track.
He had 21 points in the first half,
and we thought we were on the 30-point watch,
which any time a guy gets that many,
you were wondering, it's been a long time since we've seen a Virginia player
score that many points,
all the way back to 2019
when Kyle Guy had 30 against Marshall.
And so we were thinking that might happen,
but he missed a couple of bunnies late in the second half
that probably would have put him over the top.
And he finished with 27 a career high
and made 11 of 15 field goals.
But he was back on track,
and it was nice to say after he struggled in that Maryland game last week.
and it was nice to see Elijah Gertrude get some significant minutes.
He had played about 16 minutes and had 11 points
and was 4 of 4 from the field, 2 of 2 from the Ark.
And that was good to see because they'll need him
while Chakari White recovers from a broken wrist from that thunderous dunk.
Yeah, dunk against the Terps.
Talk to us about Chikari White.
What do we know about the injury?
He's a key guy off the bench for this team.
Yeah, I mean, I think he knew it immediately.
Just watching the review of that dunk, he hit the ground,
and he was immediately holding his wrist,
so he knew something wasn't right.
And he told Odom, Odom told us last,
and Ryan Olin told us last night that Chikari said,
I need to come out.
And so I think he tried to go with it,
but it just wasn't going to happen.
And it's apparently a fracture in his non-shooting hand.
And they really didn't produce a timetable for recovery last night.
So he's undergoing surgery today to repair the fracture.
And he'll be out for a while.
Non-shooting hand.
We've seen many players, and obviously the player's health is first and
foremost. We've seen many players play with non-shooting hand injuries. Any chance that could
happen? I think it just depends on the individual. We've seen a few Virginia guys do that in
recent years. It affects your ability to catch the ball and it bothers some people shooting,
but it just depends on how guys can adapt
and how much of a cast or whatever they,
you know, the size of the cast and all that sort of thing.
Usually it starts out big and get smaller over weeks,
and it's yet to be determined, so they don't know.
but they're you know they have a nice break now until new year's Eve when they go down to
Blacksburg but the rough part of the schedule is I think they play six of their first eight or
nine ACC games on the road which I don't know how that happened but that's it's kind of daunting
right out of the blocks how good is this team hoody we got a team sniffing the top 20
We've got a team that appears 9, 10 players easily deep.
We got a team who's got a second string that immediately gets on the floor
and infuses significant energy.
We have a clear-cut pro-prospect in Derritter,
a clear-cut pro-prospect in the big man, the German center.
Grunlow.
Yeah, Grunlow, who can do it from the perimeter.
He can do it in the post.
He can defend the rim.
He's just a very talented young man who's scratching the surface.
We have one of the best freshmen in the country, Chance Mallory.
How good is this team?
Some people believe on Yenzo is an NBA prospect as well, the seven-footer that played at Kentucky and Kansas.
I think he's got the most NBA upside of all the guys.
Yeah.
Me personally.
He moves well.
He's big.
That movie had in Maryland where he was fluid in the post.
Yeah, that was nice.
That was unbelievable.
Yeah.
Yeah, he can play.
And, you know, they have other guys that can jump up and bite you.
Malik Thomas, Sam Lewis, Dallin Hall, who had a big game against the Terps.
Devin Tillis, who sort of the glue guy, sort of the Jason Wilford of this team.
And they're very good.
In fact, the Americans coach, Coach Simpkins, said last night that he had played.
It's the best team that his American team had played.
They've played North Carolina.
They've played Villanova.
He said he thinks they have a national championship potential from his viewpoint.
I don't know if I'd be ready to go there yet, but they've played a tough schedule.
and played a bunch of elite teams by any stretch, but I think this team has a lot of, a lot of
upside. I think they can be as good as they want to be, and barring injuries, I think they're just
going to keep getting better and better because they're just now getting, I think, familiar with one
another. 100%. This team is completely
brand new, just now getting familiar
with each other, and ACC basketball
players around the corner. Virginia Tech,
a new team for the Hokies,
led by a Greek freak of sorts.
Yeah.
That guy's for real. He's
one of the better players in the
ACC, for sure, if
not the country.
And
a big guy
can do it all.
And yeah, you're right.
Ryan Odom compared
him to
Luca last night.
So, you know, you'll make those kind of comparisons if the guy's not really, really good.
Very pleasant comparison to Luca Donich.
But the guy has got all the tools.
6-9, handles the rock, can shoot from downtown, breaks defenses down off the dribble,
is able and capable of getting his teammates involved, clearly a pro basketball player.
was projected to be, much like De Ritter and Grunlow, a second round pick,
European talent, goes to Virginia Tech for more exposure, obviously earning a lot of money.
Looking to up his draft stock, we'll flirt with the NBA draft following this season.
This guy is as good a player, as you will see in the Atlantic Coast Conference,
save the Booser, the young man in Durham, one of the Booser twins.
Yeah, yeah, Boozer's off to an unbelievable start.
He's winning every, it seems like he wins ACC player of the week every week.
Yeah, he's a beast.
Or at least a rookie of the week.
But, yeah, he is a beast.
No question about it.
And I think Derritter can be a beast as well.
In fact, Odom even referred to him last night in that manner.
When he's got it going, he's almost impossible to stop.
One of the things that you and I have talked about on this show in the past,
and it's really starting to go to the forefront.
And American coach last night pointed it out, too,
is that a lot of the challengers for a national title,
it's one or two guys, three maybe at the most,
but Virginia's got so many different guys that kind of
attack you in so many different ways and that really makes them tough to guard and when you're
tough to guard you you have unlimited potential um 9 10 deep gertrude showed that heke is is capable
off the bench a lot of gertrude's minutes we're going to jacari jacari's got the busted hand
we'll see how long he's on the shelf gertrude sporting a fresh haircut our new hairstyle comes
it and is explosive off the dribble and even hit a couple of buckets from downtown the red
flag with gertrude up until this point is the jump shot is the jump shot capable enough we know he
has the talent the athleticism the leaping ability the defensive ability it was the jump shot
last night he proved he can make some three pointers i think he finished two for two uh now granted
it's american american is not an ac c opponent we're going to know a lot more of this virginia men's
basketball team as they face the Virginia Tech Hokies in eight days on New Year's Eve at 2 p.m.
And Hootie's right, the schedule really starts to pick up for this top 25 basketball team.
What are they, 21 and one poll, Virginia basketball.
Yeah, and the AP poll, which is really the one that I think most people respect the most.
But, yeah, it was refreshing listening to Gertrude a little bit after the game last night.
came into the press room.
First time I think he's been in there in a while.
He says just part of the process that, you know,
Ryan Odom tells all the players to just be ready all the time
because you never know when your number is going to get called.
And they have a lot of confidence in him
that he can come in when he has to.
And he delivered.
I think this Virginia team and Hootie knows them as well as anyone.
We're going to get to James Madison's comment here in a matter of moments as well.
We'll get to your comments, viewers, and listeners, including folks from the Panhandle, Florida.
We've got some folks in Ohio watching the program today, which I find unique.
I think that's the first time I shouted out Ohio.
Ryan Odom and this team are scoring a lot of points.
Yeah.
They are extremely deep.
It's the antithesis of an offense that Tony Bennett ran.
Frankly, I find it refreshing.
It's no shade at all thrown at Coach Bennett, who is an idol in my book and should have the court named after him, the national championship, the marquee sports moment of my lifetime up to this point.
And frankly, unless Virginia wins a college football playoff, I don't see the 2019 national championship in my sports.
what do you call it, a book, Bible, lifetime, ever, ever being beaten.
Yeah.
I mean, that's probably the only thing that could do it would be a college football playoff
championship for Virginia.
It's hard to match that.
And, you know, who knows, they could win another basketball championship as well.
But, yeah, they're scoring, I think that's the 10th time in 11 games.
They've scored at least 80 points.
And, I mean, my goodness, they were ahead, 45 to 25 with the half last night,
and Skint ended up scoring 50 in the second half, but 56 points in the paint.
And they shot season high, 62.3 percent and had 25 assists on 38 field goals.
So that's a pretty nice ratio there.
I've been chopping at the bit for Chance Mallory to enter the starting lineup,
but I have to give Dalyan Hall his flowers.
He was good the other night against Maryland.
Against Maryland, he was arguably the best player on the floor.
Yeah.
Yeah, he had 20 points and was really stepped up into a leadership role.
And it was interesting to find out later that the players refer to him as Captain America,
as captain of the team.
He's the kind of guy that you like having your point guard to be.
He's a complete player.
He's just shown a lot of leadership,
and Odom told us after that game that he has noticed more vocal leadership from Hall over the past few weeks,
which I don't think comes naturally to the guy.
I think he, even though he is a leader, I don't think he's really the vocal kind of guy,
but he's becoming the vocal kind of guy, and I think that's,
something maybe this team needed from a guy who's been around and seen it all.
He appears to be the leader of this program.
It's interesting.
The Alpha Dog doesn't have to be the best player.
Right.
He just has to be able to be someone at everybody respects because of their work ethic and discipline
and their ability to lead them through tough times and overcome adversity.
and I think Dallan Hall is perfect for that.
He's been really solid.
You got Tim Hess giving us some props.
Bob Shotta, giving us some props.
Bob Shotta, the vice mayor of Avachia Restaurant and the Prince of Birdwood.
William McChesney, the mayor of McIntyre, Vanessa Parkhill, the queen of Earlysville,
as we dish out and handle out nicknames for our viewers and listeners over here.
I like those.
Yeah.
We got the Elmer's glue behind the camera and Judah Whickower and a man who's a guy, yeah.
And a man whose nickname is known Mid-Atlantic and East Coast Wide and Hootie Rackcliffe over here.
Comments continue to come in.
This is a comment from Ohio.
Love the show, guys.
Can Hootie offer any perspective on what happened with Chance Mallory against Maryland why he came out and if it's anything to be concerned about?
I'm trying to remember exactly what happened.
I think he just got roughed up a little bit, but it was nothing to be concerned about.
I think he banged his knee harder than expected.
I don't think it turned out to be anything serious.
He went back in the tunnel with Ethan Saliba, Virginia's magician of an athletic trainer.
I've been there forever and a wonderful person.
And I think he just wanted to test it and make sure there was nothing that they needed to.
take further examination of and it was okay and he came back in the game and he was fine
last night he was terrific he played about 23 minutes had 10 points 5 of 6 from the field
four assists three turnovers and was solid five rebounds it's amazing how he rebounds
The Maryland game showed us Chance Mallory's, like, grit and character, because the offense wasn't there.
Yeah.
But then he fills up the box score with extra possessions, steals, rebounds.
Every loose ball on the floor.
If you're going to scramble for a ball with Chance Mallory, a loose ball, you can forget it because you're not going to get it away from him.
He's like a pit bull.
embodies the saying that
life is a fight for a knife in the mud.
Good point.
Actually, that's a great analogy.
And Chance Mallory is that.
Yeah.
And that's what life is all about.
Fighting for a knife in the mud.
And Mallory would get the knife every time.
Every time.
And that's why people love him.
Yeah.
And to be, you know,
almost five rebounds a game,
and he's listed at 510,
that's about as generous as it comes.
Yeah.
The 510 listing.
Exactly.
Um, he, he, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I'm
you know, connect with as a fan. And, like, Kyle Guy embodied that because, um, he's not
the tallest guy. He's, he's an overachiever. Fans can relate to people like that. That's why
fans love Steph Curry. You can relate to a Steph Curry. It's tough to relate to a six
foot 10 guy when you're the average Joe or the average Jennifer. That's a good point.
Chance Mallory we can relate to.
Exactly.
We'd see him walking down the downtown mall, and obviously as fans, we'd be like,
that's Chance Mallory.
But the average Joe or Jennifer would be like, that's just an average Joe or Jennifer.
It's absolutely unbelievable.
Yeah.
He's a great kid, too, and terrific parents without question.
And he's become such a fan favorite already.
It's unbelievable.
Sometimes it'll take guys a year, at least a year or two.
but he was
incredibly popular
from the get-go
and he's such an easy-going guy
he's just a good kid
You have comments coming in quickly for you
Hootie Jeremy Wilson who's watching in Cookville, Tennessee
he says our bench, our depth
will separate us from most schools
so many weapons to put on the court
where does the team stack up come ACC play
He's exactly right.
And I haven't seen all the ACC teams.
I haven't seen many of the ACC teams really yet at this point.
I'm anxious to dive into that a little bit once football is behind us.
But from my observations, I don't think there's anybody in the league as deep as this Virginia team is.
And I think that, I think he's exactly right.
I think it's what has separated Virginia from a lot of teams
and what will continue to do so because, I mean,
they just come at you with so many guys that can score.
And you never know from one night to the next who it's going to be.
I mean, yeah, you know that DeRitter is most likely going to get his 15 or 20 points most nights
unless somebody's really focusing on shutting him down
or he's just having a bad game like he did.
against Maryland when he was one for eight.
But the rest of that roster,
I mean, any of those guys can jump up and bite you out of nowhere.
And when they got Tillis back into the lineup,
that made them even stronger.
I mean, they were already good.
And that gave them just another guy who can hurt you.
And once they get Jakari back,
and I don't think it'll be a long time,
And they're just, they're just, the American coach was right.
I mean, normally, you got to watch out for two guys, maybe three at the most,
but you got to watch out for everybody on this roster because, I mean, like we were talking,
you know, Dallon Hall came up with 20 out of nowhere the other night when they needed it most
because some of the other guys were not producing the way that they might normally.
But that seems to be the way it is night in and night out that there's somebody who can jump up and get you.
They had five guys in double figures last night and two more guys with eight points.
So that just seems to be the way it is.
They've got so many guys who can shoot it and so many guys who can score.
And so much height.
Yeah, they can go at you big, they can go at you small, they can mix it up.
They've got so many different rotations.
I think he's got a really good team on his hands.
I agree.
I agree.
There's pros, there's depth, there's defense, there's ball handling.
I mean, we haven't even seen Malik Thomas scoring acumen, really.
We've seen flashes.
your best scorer, all-around scorer, might be Malik Thomas, and he's been quiet.
Yeah, I mean, he averaged about 20 a game.
At San Fran.
At San Fran last year, and he's hit, come close to that number a few times early in the season,
but he's usually getting his double figures or somewhere in that neighborhood,
but he can come out of nowhere and kill you.
Yeah.
It's just, I can't wait to see what happens coming.
PCC play. Obviously we're excited here on the set of the Jerry and Jerry show. Football,
comments continue to come all over football. We will transition to the Gator Bowl. How about the
line moving from minus seven to minus four? How about this wild time of college football where the
starting quarterback, who's paid a lot of money to be the starting quarterback, who comes from
Happy Valley, tells his football team, his teammates, and I'm going to use air quotes here, his
brothers that I'm not going to play with you in the most important game of the year
instead I'm going to go chase a paycheck and enter the transfer portal yeah I mean
it's just another thing I don't like about what football is transformed into
because of all the money and the temptations of going pro and all that stuff and
yeah that's disappointing I mean you're letting your teammates down I
I think, what's one more game, should be one of the biggest games of the year for you, going to a bowl.
I know balls don't mean what they used to, particularly with the playoffs the way they are now.
But, you know, back in the day, you just didn't turn your back on your teammates like that.
And that's something that's a disturbing aspect of today's game.
they've got a couple other receivers
that are apparently going into the portal
and I don't know if they're going to be available either.
So that's a big hit to their offense.
They already took a little bit of a hit
because their offensive coordinator
took the head coaching job of Washington State
and he's gone.
And so they went out and hired
I guess it became official yesterday,
hired Chip Lindsay, the former Michigan offensive coordinator.
Smartest move ever for Lindsay getting out of Ann Arbor.
Yeah, I agree to that.
It's unclear whether or not he's going to be calling plays
in the Gator Bowl for Missouri,
but it's unclear who's going to be calling plays.
It could be Drinkwich, their head coach,
who has some experience at that.
But Lindsey has some familiarity with Virginia.
He was the O.C. for Mike Brown at Carolina in 23 and 24.
So we'll have to wait and see how that shakes out.
Here's a wild scenario for you, Hootie.
James Franklin fired at Penn State.
James Franklin hired at Virginia Tech.
James Franklin
recruited and you're going to have to help me
with his name is it
Pribula
Pribula?
Yeah, I think
Pribula or Pribula
I'm not really sure.
Bo Pribula.
It's P-R-I-B-U-L-A.
Judah's the linguist over here.
I'm just a guy that
can talk about basketball and football here.
I know.
P-R-I-B-U-L-A.
Pribula?
I'm thinking Pribula.
Okay, we're going to go with Judah here.
Pribula.
Yeah.
Okay.
Thank you, Judah.
Okay, the glue guy here, Hootie.
He's the glue guy.
That's why he's the glue guy.
He's got all the answers over there.
Franklin and Virginia Tech, does James Franklin backdoor channel conversation, Pribula,
I need a quarterback in Virginia Tech, and caused the domino effect of Pribula entering the transfer portal before the Gator Bowl
and indirectly helping the University of Virginia and Tony Elliott?
It could be because they have that kind of.
connection, obviously, and he needs a quarterback, and some say that Pribula could demand
as much as $2 million on the open market, and Tech has the money to spend now.
They've got a $20 million anonymous donation.
Yeah, I would not be surprised to see him wearing orange and maroon pretty soon.
Which would be wild if James Franklin hired at Virginia Tech back-channeling.
Pribula helps the University of Virginia in a Gator Bowl matchup against their
stiffest competition yet the line move from minus 7 where it opened ladies and
gentlemen to now minus 4 immediately after the Pribula news yeah I'm sure that
had a big impact because even though their backup is a true freshman he did get
some a few games in when Pribula went down earlier in the season
Privy will
came back late
after recovering
but the other kid
was able to play
in at least three games
I think start three games
and put up some decent numbers
so
it's not like the cupboard is totally bare
but
you know they're
a highly successful running team
they led the SEC in
rushing which is not easy
to do because that's a run-oriented
league
and
I think their
tailback was the leading rusher
in the SEC as well
so
they're going to come
in to the Gator Bowl
and try to run the ball down Virginia's throats
and
it's going to be up to
coach Rudd and his defense to
try to limit that and make them throw the ball
Bobby Kohler
watching the program. Troy Foster
watching the program. Nancy Farrell Johnson
giving us some props right now, I believe
kin to you, Savannah Bowen
watching the program.
Yes.
The comments continue to come
in. I will get to the comments, put them in the feed,
viewers and listeners, and I will relay
them live on air.
I have a couple of questions.
I saw one outlet
linked Pribula to UVA.
I saw that too.
I don't know if there's anything to it or not.
and we haven't been able to garner any comment about that
although we did talk to Tyler Jones, Virginia's GM yesterday
and Justin Spiro's the assistant GM
about the war they're fighting right now
with the portal opening January 2nd, I believe,
and right now there's only one portal this year.
Last year they had the one
and then they had another after spring ball.
We don't have that this year.
So everything's got to be done in a tighter period.
And I checked yesterday, there's over a thousand guys in the portal as we speak,
and that number grows daily.
And it was interesting listening to, we'll be doing an extensive story on that this week,
but listening to those guys talk about it's almost hand-to-hand combat.
And Sparrow was talking about from the first ding of a guy saying he's going to go into the portal, he's like constantly aware of every time a guy goes into the portal and their staff, which I think they told me numbers like seven, four.
full-time, I'm not sure, I can't hardly read my own notes here.
I'll have to go back and look at it, but they've got a staff of full-timers and part-timers over there
that are going through videotape like crazy evaluating every single player that goes into the portal.
And I can't imagine the mass of undertaking that requires to scout all these guys to see who might fix.
your program not only football-wise, but academically as well.
How about Virginia?
I mean, the transfer portal in UVA.
What do we know about Chandler Morris?
What do we know about guys jumping in the portal?
We got a talented defensive back that's in the portal.
There's five guys, five Wahoo's in the portal right now.
And Provard is obviously the one of note.
All-ACC.
Mm-hmm.
And talking to Tyler Jones,
and Justin Sparrow's yesterday,
they said their number one priority is retention,
is getting these guys,
keeping the guys that they already have.
And I think,
I think,
Jones, I think, mentioned during that time
that some of these guys will actually probably
take a pay cut to stay here
because they like the culture so much,
and they like the way Tony Elliott runs a program
and their brotherhood that they've,
established but that is their number one priority is to keeping retention and keeping guys here
and then the acquisition and but as far as Chandler Morris goes we talked to him yesterday and
he said he's very hopeful that he'll get his extra year of eligibility we know that Virginia
to submit some additional documentation to the NCAA in his case, which Justin Sparrow confirmed
yesterday, goes back to the 2022 season when he was the starter.
He won a three-way quarterback battle at TCU for the starting job, started the first game
of the season against Colorado, and was injured in that game.
and essentially wiped out his season.
He was able to come back and play,
but mostly just some mop-up
toward the end of the season.
And TCU went on and played in the national championship game that year.
So that is their case in trying to get him an extra year of eligibility.
And he's hopeful.
Tyler Jones said that UVA is hopeful,
and that
I mean
what a
what a blessing that would be
to have a guy like
Chandler Morris
coming back
for another year
that'd be
that'd be a seventh year
yeah
unbelievable
and we're seeing that
yeah we are seeing that
right
and he's he is
Chandler Morris is
nearing turning 25
I believe
let me see
probably
let me see if I can get
his birthday
so if he gets his
so December 26
is his birthday
Okay. So he turns 20, Chandler Morris turns 25 the day after Christmas. That means he would be 26 potentially if Virginia makes another bull run next year and comes back. Good point. And, you know, I'm all for Chandler Morris coming back. There are, there is this narrative out here, which I am not buying, but it is a conversation talk show. So we consider all sides.
Absolutely.
And the narrative out there is, if Chandler Morris does come back, then what does it do for quarterback?
Danny Kalen?
Yeah.
What's it do for making the future quarterback?
Well, yeah, it depends on the kid.
And we've gotten to know Kalin a little bit, but not well.
It depends on what his goals are and how comfortable he is here.
he could decide that he wants to test the waters and see if he could go somewhere else and become a starter.
And I imagine that he will still get a good payday if he stays here.
But you never know.
I think should Morris not get a seventh year, I think Virginia might still.
still be in the market for a more experienced quarterback.
I don't know that for certain, but I think that they might be just because
do you want to go into next season with a guy who has a couple of starts under his belt,
but not tons of experience?
Maybe so.
Maybe they feel confident that he can come in right out of the gate next year
and start and have a great year.
we don't know what they're thinking is
but they might want to at least get another
experienced guy to come in and be a backup
although that's you're probably not going to get
a really outstanding guy from the portal
under those conditions but
probably you know because if you look behind
Kela and a cold gear a true freshman who got in
a little bit this season is you
on the other guy in the program with any experience at quarterback.
Right.
It's just a wild time for college football.
So far, though, from a portal standpoint, it seems pretty stable in Charlottesville.
Yeah, for the most part, I think they've done a pretty good job of retention, and that was their purpose,
and they've done a good job with that.
They're still losing a lot of guys just because their eligibility is expired,
but they've done a pretty good job of keeping what they've got.
And we'll add to that once January 2nd is open for business.
This comment comes in, and this is coming in from the Triangle, North Carolina.
Guys that Love Your Show, do you guys have any comments on the news that Belichick is hiring Bobby Petrino
is the next offensive coordinator at UNC?
well i heard it's heard last night that it's not quite a done deal yet but just when you think
things couldn't get more bizarre in chapel hill they did become more bizarre in chapel hill i've already
seen some good stuff on twitter of uh bellichick on a motorcycle and and bobby betrino on
another motorcycle beside of him with big smiles on her faces so we should out offer some
background and color on that for those that don't follow the sport as closely as we do yeah well you know
when bobby petrino was the head coach at arkansas he was uh he showed up one day uh bruised and
black eyed and beaten um from allegedly a motorcycle spill with uh a young blonde lady on the back
of his motorcycle who happened to work in the front office there at the football program
and that led through all kinds of innuendos and rumors.
The biggest one that I was told by an Arkansas fan
was that who supposedly with inside knowledge
was that the black eye and bruises didn't come from a spill on the motorcycle,
but that the girl was dating a state trooper
who had his way with Bobby Petrino when he found it out.
I don't know what's true and what's not
but that's the gossip
but Petrino has not been
a very well-liked person
wherever he's been
talented football coach though
very talented football coach
very talented offensive mind
he didn't make any friends
in Atlanta with the Falcons
when he was the head coach here
most people couldn't wait until he got out of town
and he didn't finish the season that year
when he left
a couple of stints at Louisville
and some bad taste in the mouth there
but
he was back at Arkansas this year
as the OC
and of course
they had a coaching change
so he's on the free market
and could be down in Chapel Bill
before we know it
unbelievable it's wild times
I mean think of the offseason saga and drama
and soap opera that's happened so far.
The saga and Ann Arbor with their head coach.
That gets more bizarre by the day.
More bizarre by the day.
Yeah.
You're clearly doing with someone who's unstable and unhinged.
Yeah, so he's married with children and hitting on women all over the place.
All over the world.
Some of them he had never even met.
Yeah, through Instagram direct messages.
Right.
Including one only fans model that he offered free season tickets for
I'll just call it an escapade
and keep it PG-13 next year
that probably is PG
for the parents that are watching
it is Christmas time
then there's the Ohio University
you saw that
I did not see that
I heard it there was something
to happen there but I didn't see what it was
the same thing
head coach
undergraduate
hotel
in front of alumni
boosters and players
while still married
although separated
canned
the billichick is i find it absolutely wild you got um this man and all the extracurriculars now petrino in the
mix is absolutely wild to me you got the guys refusing to play in the most important game of the season
and chasing paychecks and former head coaches potentially the missouri story and here you got
Virginia in Charlottesville, which is an extremely stable environment and a testament to Tony
Elliott. We're so happy that things are stable here. Unbelievable. That's all sports writers and
sports media people don't need, particularly at this time of the year, is more drama in the
program other than just trying to win at their sport. So thank goodness for that.
Jeremy and Tennessee says, and don't forget Notre Dame and how they acted with the college football
playoff. Absolutely shameful, he says. Yeah, I was very disappointed in that. And, you know,
that had an impact on Virginia because Notre Dame was supposed to play, I think, Georgia Tech
in the Pop-Tart Bowl. And when Notre Dame pulled out, the Gator, well, actually the Gator,
Gator Bowl was in conversations with Georgia Tech.
They wanted Georgia Tech instead of Virginia because it's a much closer drive for
tech fans. I think it's like a four or five-hour drive from Atlanta to Jacksonville.
And so the Gator was politicking hard, making deals with the Georgia Tech.
And then when Notre Dame pulled out of the Pop-Tart Bowl, that ball went after Georgia Tech.
I think they had the higher pecking order there,
which put Virginia in the gator.
And so that threw things,
threw a monkey into the,
into the whole equation
and just caused some bowl selection to take chaos, I guess.
Absolutely.
Renée Pet.
Yeah, that really, I didn't like the fact
that Notre Dame refused to go to,
a bowl game. Well, and then, you know, the ACC fans, I think, have a gripe. You use the Atlantic
Coast conference during the pandemic. Use the conference. Absolutely. Use the conference. And then,
and then you are basically piggybacking, riding the coattails, the conference, and all other
sports. But you throw shade on Miami. You throw shade on the
commissioner, you basically call the ACC the red-headed stepchild.
Yeah.
I mean, it's, what's the move for the conference with Notre Dame?
That's a good question.
It would have been interesting to have been a fly on the wall in New York when
Jim Phillips met with the Notre Dame AD this week to try to straighten out the situation.
And I don't know what was said from either party, but I think a lot of the ACC schools are kind of fed up with Notre Dame.
They tried to influence the ACC to take Stanford and Cal in the expansion.
A lot of the schools were against it.
They twisted some arms, and like you said, they took advantage of the plane in the ACC.
to win the conference during the COVID year,
where they had no, they couldn't play the schedule, really.
They wouldn't have not been able to play.
And they take full advantage of the ACC's bowl tie-ins.
There's a lot of benefits from Notre Dame there
by agreeing to play five ACC teams a year.
Originally, I thought it was a good idea, but I'm not so sure anymore that it is.
And the ACC doesn't do well against Notre Dame in those matchups traditionally.
It's given the Notre Dame a home for all of its other sports.
And so at some point at the ACC, you've got to wonder if anybody has enough stones to say,
become a full member or we're going to dissolve our agreement.
While times for sports, comments have come in asking if you have any take on the new UVA president.
I don't. I really don't follow that very strongly. You would probably be more qualified about that
than I am. I've never met him. Somebody told me he's a good guy. I don't know. I wish him luck.
but I really don't have any expertise in that area,
but you might be free to comment on that
because you follow it a lot closer than I do.
Scott Beardsley, three-term, Darden Dean,
Darden School Dean,
10th president at the University of Virginia.
I was surprised at that.
It's only been 10 presidents.
Yeah, I was also surprised.
Absolutely.
About to start a five-and-a-half-year term,
and I guess the saga on the story,
line is the appointment kind of in the bottom of the ninth inning by a Yonken appointed board of
visitors that is not fully staffed the board. Spamberger's taking office in January and she's
already said she's going to nuclear bomb the board. So Virginia Democrats are throwing their hands in
the air and saying foul, foul, foul, throw in the proverbial yellow hanky and penalty because they
wanted to name the president. Where the Republicans in Yonkin wanted to name the president
before the board changed its ideology and its dynamic.
So much like college football, my friend, with the drama and the chaos,
it happens at the Board of Visitors and at the political level as well.
Yeah, I've followed it from afar.
I wouldn't say I've been closely tied to it,
but I was aware that he'd been at Darden for quite a while,
and apparently it has a good reputation,
but again, I don't know him and don't know much about him,
but I wish him well.
Yeah, absolutely.
I wish him well, too.
I think he's a fantastically a talented candidate
and his resume speaks for itself.
Great fundraiser.
And the hopper for Jerry Rackleff.com?
Well, it's an all Gator Bowl the rest of the week
and some follow-up on basketball,
just from comments from the American coach
and from Buzz Williams
after the game last weekend when he, if you know Buzz,
and I teased, I guess it a little bit with one of the videos I put up on my Twitter account.
Buzz is a very unique guy in terms of the way he analyzed his opponents to the nth degree,
and he had some very interesting comments, and did call Virginia a unique,
basketball team after their matchup, but some of that, and again, more Gator Bowl stuff,
and just trying to get through the end of this season and deeper into basketball.
It's the site and the website and the platform to visit. It's jerry rackliff.com. You follow the man on
Twitter. I do. Check his Twitter platform and his website jerryrackliff.com multiple times a day.
The content is fresh. The content is compelling.
the commentary is is just it gets me thinking and it often provides content for our 1230 show the i love
seville show he's a bertie it was interesting that uh we had some celebrities in the audience last
night with uh don staley oh yeah visiting uh jpj to see her godson play we weren't sure if
debby ryan told us it was her her uh don't's nephew but it turned out it's her godson
and she was there for a while.
And I think Dave Matthews was spotted in the crowd.
Yep, yep.
And speaking of celebrities,
the Jerry and Jeff Jones show,
the Jerry and Jerry show has had celebrities on that show.
We have, and we're going to have more.
We had to punt this week's show.
We had a really special guest,
and I'm not at liberty to say who it was lined up for today.
But there was some miscommunication,
and we got the times wrong,
and so we had to punt this week being the holidays
and all that sort of stuff.
Jeff Jones cracks me up on that show.
Jeff's got a great sense of humor.
Yes, he does.
For those who don't know him very well,
and he loves ribbing his former teammates
and fellow coaches.
And so he's a fun guy to hang out with,
and he's got such a close connection
with so many UVA people over the decades,
and we'll be bringing a lot of those people on the show throughout the season.
So if you've missed any episodes, you can find them archived on the site,
but we've had Ricky Stokes.
We've had Dave Odom,
The Magic Man.
From his home in Winston-Salem.
We've had The Magic Man, Jimmy Miller.
We had the four Kentuckians with Jeff Lamp, Terry Gates,
Lee Raker and, of course, Jeff, who helped turn Virginia basketball around back in the late 70s and early 80s.
And another thing that I think if you're a Virginia Finn, you'll really enjoy from that show,
is just the behind the curtains look into the Virginia basketball program.
And from an experienced coach's point of view, he can point out things that the normal,
eye the fans don't see and he has privy and he goes to practice and he has Ryan's ear
and so he's offered up a few tips on the show that came to fruition if so if you're if
you're really into it you ought to listen in and see what you can pick up from a guy with
40 years of coaching and in major college basketball I can I you can I
You see why, just from the show, why Jeff Jones was a good coach.
He just has that, the gift, Jeff Jones, you see it just through the show, the gift of human connection.
Yeah, absolutely.
And he's a beloved figure in college basketball and from his former teammates and players.
It's a guy just would want to sit at the bar with and have a beer and just hear him talk.
Yeah, and I have.
Yeah, I know you have.
And it's a lot like that on the show.
Yeah, that's why the show is great.
Yeah, and I think, I don't know if we're allowed to.
drink beer on podcast.
You should. You're the boss.
It's Jerry Rackleff platform.
I guess we could.
You make the rules, Hooty.
Maybe we'll do that.
Jerry, in fact, if I was just going to say that, Jerry Rackleff needs a brewery sponsor.
There you go.
Give the man a brewery sponsor.
They'll drink beers on the show.
Yeah, we'll showcase your beer.
I'm a feeling Jeff would have one, too.
I think he might have one.
Hootie Rackleff.
Quistie's arm.
He's a great man.
Merry Christmas, happy holidays.
Merry Christmas to you and Judah and all your families
and all our viewers out there.
We hope you have a wonderful holiday period.
Same to you.
Same to you.
