Starting point is 00:00:00 I might want to confirm. Are we live on Twitter? Check Twitter if you could. Welcome to the I Love Seville Show, guys. My name is Jerry Miller. Thank you kindly for joining us on a chilly, chilly afternoon in downtown Charlottesville. It is Wednesday, and I looked at the weather app on my phone. I was surprised when it said it was 42.
Starting point is 00:00:27 It feels a lot colder than 14. 42 degrees out there. It's been a good morning so far. Had a nice bit of time spent this morning with John and Andrew Vermilion at Charlottesville Sanitary Supply at their headquarters on East High Street. They're just great people. Not just partners of the program and we help them with certain aspects of their business, but just genuinely good people, John and Andrew Vermilion. I like being around good people. I like doing business with clients that are good people, and they embody that. A lot we're going to cover on the program.
Starting point is 00:01:06 Bob Shotta, thank you for watching the show. We appreciate you, Bob Shotta. William McChesney, thank you for watching the program. Neil Williamson, the president of the Free Enterprise Forum a couple minutes ago, sent me some intel, the county of Green, Green County, Green with an E at the end, has been awarded a $12 million grant, $12 million in grant funding. Green County receives funding for projects related to the White Run Reservoir. Green County received Word Monday that it was awarded $12 million in grant funding through the Virginia Department of Health, the VDH, to help pay for the raw water line and intake and pump station.
Starting point is 00:01:49 Two projects necessary for the White Run Reservoir. County representatives work closely with Senator Bryce Reeves and delegate Nick Frieda. to lobby for funding from the General Assembly toward water projects and the Commonwealth. The General Assembly approved $25 million in grand funding earlier this year with priority for Green County and the town of Bowling Green.
Starting point is 00:02:12 The funding is in addition to the $3 million allocated by the General Assembly in fiscal year 2025, bringing the total and grant funding for the project to $15 million. I'll tell you what. There are a few counties that are as strong
Starting point is 00:02:28 right now from a a future and upside standpoint is Green County. You got to make sure Twitter's up and running? Yes. You sure? It is. Okay. You have, in green, Stanley Martin, who is a fantastic home builder, and soon to be a partner
Starting point is 00:02:47 of the I Love Seville Network, they're building fantastic homes in Green County. You have, of course, the AstraZeneca project in Northern Amar County that is basically on the Green County line. So there's going to be a lot of job opportunity, whether it's construction, whether it's the $125,000 average salary for the 600 workers at AstraZetica needing a place to live. I'm extremely bullish on the upside, ladies and gentlemen, of green. And now they get some funding for water. So props to the county that I think right now has the most upside of any in central Virginia. I'm not saying it's the best economy. I'm not saying, it's anything about the politics. I'm just talking about upside momentum and trajectory. Green
Starting point is 00:03:35 County is, I'm bullish on what's happening over there. Judah Wickhauer, why don't we go to a studio camera and then a two shot? We're going to talk Al Morrow County and whether there's a need for a fourth high school and the price tag that comes with that fourth high school. Goodness gracious, Judith, roughly $250 million for a fourth high school. I'm on the side of the fence that we do need to build a fourth high school in Almore County. fourth high school needs to be in the northern feeder pattern. You know, force lakes, Holly Mead in that area. But $250 million is the price tag supervisors.
Starting point is 00:04:09 You're already preparing taxpayers for. The money's going to have to come from somewhere. No doubt. We'll talk about that on today's program. We'll talk 15 Virginia football players making all ACC teams, including the starting tailback, Jammari Taylor, who is a first-team all-conference performer. We'll talk about the basketball team, UVA, and Ryan Odom, play tonight, ESPNU against Texas.
Starting point is 00:04:35 Texas is a very good team. This will be a high-scoring affair and up-tempo, get up, and down the floor type of contest. We'll talk Amtrak in a holiday makeover. And how about nine UVA deans authoring a letter? Goodness gracious, there's letters every single day. I think some people just want to, you know, have their name out there. Yeah. Yeah, there's nine UVA deans that authored a letter saying we should absolutely pump the brakes on the UVA presidential hiring and search that no one should be hired right now.
Starting point is 00:05:09 If I had to put an over-under on when this president would be hired, I'm going to say this is going to happen certainly when Spanberger is in office in 2026. You don't think they're going to find one before then. You think we will? I think the people that are doing the job of actually looking for a dean are probably doing the best job they can and they're not going to rush this to get it done before Spanberger comes into office they're not going to slow it down specifically so that it doesn't happen until Spanberger's in office I think they're just looking for the best possible candidate and you've got all these people involved that are like I think there's a lot of politics, there's so much politics involved about, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:59 about whether it's a pick from the right or a pick from the left. And just let the people do their job. Well, I will say this. If the Yonkenites, the Glenn Yonken army, if the Jefferson Council, conservatives, let's say conservatives, if there was, in fact, a coup or some backroom wheeling and dealing to oust Jim Ryan and to replace him with a conservative-minded president to reimagine the University of Virginia and align it more in a Jeffersonian or John Castine frame of mind as opposed to where we are now where some folks are saying it's woke is one word that's used. It's out there. A lot of folks saying it's entirely too liberal.
Starting point is 00:06:52 Well, Mahoney was saying that part of the reason he agreed to the deal was because looking through the website, the UVA website, and some of their ideals, whatever you want to call them, he said some of that stuff, nobody was even sure if that was just old website copy or if it was part of the DEI initiatives that were put in place under Ryan. And so there's, I think, a lot of uncertainty at UVA right now. Absolutely. Tons of uncertainty, without question. The point I was going to make was if Yonkin and the Yonkanites and the Jefferson Council wanted to align the University of Virginia in a more conservative avenue with a hand-picked president, they have failed at doing that. Yeah. They had an opportunity. There was a window.
Starting point is 00:07:45 there was yonkin appointed ummen appointed members on the board and that window has closed if not shunk completely I think that would have been a I think it would have ended up being a bad look well it would have rightly
Starting point is 00:08:01 the faculty would have revolted it would have rightly been called a you know a pushing something through just to get fast track yeah yeah absolutely we'll talk we'll talk some about the now nine deans
Starting point is 00:08:13 and speaking of of some of the people involved in this whole soap opera. Today on the downtown mall, I saw David Tiscano, the Virginia institution, and I saw Cree Dids. Cree Deds and David Tisano. They weren't together, but they were on the downtown mall. Cree Dides looks like, and Cree Dides is always dressed sharply. David Tiscano is always dressed sharply.
Starting point is 00:08:38 Cree Dides looks like he needs to see a chiropractor. Man was having a hard time standing up straight and was shuffling his feet. in painful fashion. Look like you had lower back pain. But that's the beauty of downtown Charleston. Especially lower back pain, ain't no joke. Lower back pain is the worst. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:54 It's the absolute worse. All right, a lot we want to cover on the broadcast. I'd love to give some attention to Oak Valley Custom Hartscapes. If you need a custom hardscape built at your house or at your place of business, Oak Valley Custom Hartscapes is who you contact. They will help you imagine and design and build anything that, That meets your criteria, your dreams, your expectations. And the return on investment on a heartscape is not just financial.
Starting point is 00:09:22 It's a return on experience and quality of life. I'll get to John Blair's comment that's coming in a matter of moments. I saw John Blair yesterday. Always enjoy running into John Blair. $250 million. Let's put the first two lower thirds on screen. High school, Almaro County. You already have Almaro County supervisors, ladies and gentlemen,
Starting point is 00:09:41 that are letting the community know. that the price tag of a new high school in Almaro County is going to run $250 million. And I am one who wants to prioritize, you know, quality of life, amenities, resources before we do, before we prioritize more development. And we absolutely need a fourth high school. The area's population is growing. It's set to grow even more. The three high schools, Western Monticello and Almore,
Starting point is 00:10:15 high school are at capacity and are only going to get, uh, exceed capacity. Um, a fourth high school is a must. Why we want to have this conversation with you is the price tag is somewhere between 230 and 250 million dollars for this high school. And the money's going to have to come from somewhere. And I think, um, I'm curious of your take on this, you jump in here. Um, I, I, slam dunk to me, uh, in northern Amar County with all the density that's up there. Yeah. Um, That seems to be where it needs to go. Where is the nearest school to... Alboro.
Starting point is 00:10:51 On Rio. You're talking about for Forest Lakes or Holly Mead? I mean, you think about that is a long commute. That is quite a drive. For the phone, I mean... Especially during... Especially if it's during rush hour. Route 29 at that time?
Starting point is 00:11:04 Yeah. I mean, morning and post school? I mean, goodness gracious, scrape balls of fire. $250 million for that high school. Only getting more expensive. Judah Wiccaro jump in with any conversation. Yeah, I mean, I think you've got, you've made a good argument, just the fact that the Hollywood area doesn't have anything. You're right, that's probably the place to put it.
Starting point is 00:11:27 And the question is, where's that money come from? Virginia government provides some money for some things. Does that include schools? Oh, of course. Yeah, absolutely. And the top line item on Alamoreau County's yearly budget is schools. So it'll be a collaboration. But the funding is going to involve the purchasing of land,
Starting point is 00:11:59 the construction, the building, the staffing, redistricting. Yeah, a lot of kids. I mean, this is a massive project school board members and supervisors have in front of them. Redistricting is never fun. No. More staffing, more payroll, more capital expenses, more construction costs, $250 million viewers and listeners is the number that's being thrown around right now, which is a startling number to me.
Starting point is 00:12:31 But hey, it's high school, right? And it ain't cheap. Viewers and listeners, let us know your thoughts. Put them in the feed. We'll relay them live on air. Let's go to John Blair. He's watching the program. Again, I saw him yesterday, John.
Starting point is 00:12:43 it was great to see you. He says, here's something interesting about the letters from the UVA deans. Apparently, McIntyre does not have a dean any longer. Somehow, in all of the chaos, I did not see much press at all about the former dean leaving the position
Starting point is 00:12:58 in June of this year. Here is the press release. I did not know that as well, John. This is why we love the show. Crowdsource information. Then he shares a link from the McIntyre school, and Nicole Thorne-Jenkins.
Starting point is 00:13:13 concluding term as Dean in the McIntyre School, and her term as tenure as dean has been marked by a period of rapid growth and innovation at the Commerce School. So the McIntyre School does not have a dean. That's a perfect segue into the next topic, Judah. Nine deans authoring a letter, signing a letter, co-signing a letter saying, pump the brakes on the search. Give them the who, what, when, where, why? I mean, it's the gift that keeps on giving. You're talking about from a content standpoint? I'm talking about UVA, and I don't know.
Starting point is 00:13:53 At this point, it seems like people just want to get in the news. It's an easy way to get your name out there to write a letter to someone about something going on at UVA right now. So anyways, nine out of the 14 deans at UVA have now sent their letter to the Board of Visitors. They did this on Monday and requested that the board postpone the selection of a president thinking that if a president is found and put into office the way things currently are, there will be a question of legitimacy. I don't think, yeah. Why, because there's not the appropriate number of board members on there? Yeah, probably. Because it's done right before Spamberger gets in office?
Starting point is 00:14:54 All of that. I mean, you could probably make up a reason, and it would be close to accurate. I mean, any number of reasons you could say that there would be legitimacy problems with a president selected at this time. But there are enough people involved, it's not just, despite what it may look like, I don't think it's just the Board of Visitors that's making this decision. They've got, you know, they've got outside, they've got people from UVA that aren't part of the Board of Visitors. They've got all kinds of, I think there's a firm helping.
Starting point is 00:15:34 Yeah, it's a headhunting firm, putting a short list together. There's a board meeting this week. week. They meet at the board's head multiple days. Perhaps some clarity will happen on the search. I don't think it's on the agenda right now. Take it from the other side. Who's going to want the job at this point? I mean, look at what Ryan's gone through. Who would want the job? I'm sure there's someone out there. I mean... Jim Ryan joke, being a school president is no way to make a living. No, Jim Ryan's making a million dollars, has his housing paid for, country club memberships, vehicles, you know.
Starting point is 00:16:16 Team of people behind him. Air, you know, his own plane when he needs it, a UVA access. I mean, let's cut to the chase. It's still a very prestigious gig. It's just a time of turmoil right now for it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, somebody's going to take the job. it's not like
Starting point is 00:16:38 universities have ever had a problem finding presidents or coaches or deans somebody's going to get the job somebody's probably going to do a good job and it's just a matter of getting past all of the egos involved right now. Bill McChesney
Starting point is 00:17:00 the mayor of McIntyre jokes there's no NIL for school president President. Stacey Baker, Patty, watching the show. Lennie Kreitzer, thank you for liking and sharing the show. We appreciate you guys. Let's see what happens. B-OV in Sesh this week at the BORSA, the Board of Visitors. Let's see what happens there. Next headline, Judah Wickear. What do you got?
Starting point is 00:17:24 Warner, Senator Mark Warner. Mark Warner running for a fourth term, so Mark Warner is doing his best to stay in the news. He was on CNBC today, and Mark Warner has said that college graduates could face unemployment. People in their 20s to 30s could face a 25% unemployment in the next year or two because of artificial intelligence. Mark, go ahead. Is there a source for his information? Not that I doubt the truth of what he's saying. I fully believe that that sounds plausible.
Starting point is 00:18:02 But the fact that we're not hearing this shouted from more rooftops is... He's at the CNBC CFO Council Summit in Washington, D.C. On today, earlier today, Mark Warner told CNBC senior Washington correspondent Eam and Javers that he fears the unemployment rate among recent college grads could reach 25% over the next two to five years if the AI issue is not addressed. and he's working with Republican Center Josh Hawley of Missouri on an effort to require data collection
Starting point is 00:18:37 on AI-linked job losses. Warner said his biggest fear is not related to the recent layoffs from the corporate sector, but the jobs that will never be created, either never created or the ones that have laid off will never fill again. Very well,
Starting point is 00:18:53 this very, 25% seems high, but we do know that AI is going to chop the legs out of a lot of people. Yeah. You, we've discussed this on past shows, the 2025-2020-6 version of the Industrial Revolution, artificial intelligence, a digital revolution, if you are.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Artificial Intelligence Revolution. It's a tool that can be used to make businesses better, but I think a lot of people in positions of power are going to think, oh, hey, this is going to save us a lot of money by doing the jobs that all these people are doing without the understanding that they're just large language models. This isn't actual AI. This is not going to replace someone's job. It will help someone do their job better, but it requires an understanding of the underlying,
Starting point is 00:19:51 whether that's writing or coding or whatever you're using it for, you have to check the work that comes out of these systems. They are not always correct, and they are not going to run your business for you. I totally agree with you, but I'll also dovetail or add to that that the artificial intelligence and the technology will only get stronger and better and more ubiquitous and more approachable and easier to use, more sophisticated, more intelligent. it. We are at early stage of it. It's going to get stronger. But the question of whether it will ever reach actual AI status is
Starting point is 00:20:34 I think a matter for hot debate. That's where you and I disagree. What we have now is not even intelligence. It's you know, counsel. Look up large language models. It's about
Starting point is 00:20:50 prediction. It's not about actual, it's not about thought or you know ideas or you know it's using a tool that is good at predicting language and so you can ask it
Starting point is 00:21:07 to do things and it will do those things but oftentimes it'll screw things up it'll screw things up it'll misquote it'll tell you that my sister my sister has a name for her chat GPT and she asks
Starting point is 00:21:23 it questions and then she's like Like, hey, you, like, completely got this wrong. Like, you told me someplace that wasn't even, like, she'll be asking for a place to go, you know, eat. And it'll give her places that aren't open. It'll give her, like, places. What's the name of her, chat, GBT? I think it's something Chuck,
Starting point is 00:21:44 Chuck wagon, I don't remember. Something to do with Chuck. Did she give her a hard time for that? She told me that, she told me that, She told me what my parents and them wanted to have for dinner one night. So I come over, she's like, hey, mom wants you to start cooking. I'm like, so I'm looking at my mom. I don't see any recipe anywhere.
Starting point is 00:22:07 So I'm like, I asked her, send me the recipe. So she sends me a screenshot. All it's got are the instructions. And I'm like, this isn't the recipe. I also need the amounts that go into it, how much salt, how much flour, whatever. And so she sends me the, the, the, a screenshot of, damn it, Chuck. Of the, of the, what's in, what's in it. But this was supposed to be, it was something like, something like beef tips in herb sauce.
Starting point is 00:22:39 Sounds really good. But all it had me make were the beef tips. There was no herb sauce. I'm like, could you send me the recipe? She's like, oh, it's just something that, uh, that Chuck gave me. and I'm like, so you don't even have a recipe? She's like, well, what was I supposed to do? I'm like, I don't know, go on Google and look for an actual recipe
Starting point is 00:23:04 instead of asking this mental LLM, large language model, what to have for dinner tonight, and not even giving me like what I need to make it. It's nuts. Like she didn't even think to look or double check or make sure that this was, what we needed or that the ingredients were sane.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Chuck. Chuck. Chuck. Next headline. Judeoicare. Chuck. I don't like the name Chuck for the chat, GBT. To be fair, the beef tips were good, but they would have been a lot better with the herb sauce. With the herb sauce. Next headline.
Starting point is 00:23:45 Charlottesville Amtrak. This is a feel-good. Yeah. The Amtrak station. This is a group of Christmas Flair decorations? Holiday decor? Local garden clubs
Starting point is 00:23:58 have gotten together. Mostly women. A tradition that's gone on for 20 years. And it's a way of cheering up those who are traveling for the holidays. I think it's great. And it's part of what
Starting point is 00:24:14 goes into making a community. As people like this that are willing to put themselves out there and share... Why are the Amtrak? backstation. Because traveling.
Starting point is 00:24:26 I doubt they could, I doubt they would be allowed to go into the Charlottesville Airport. Yeah. And I'm sure that Charlottesville Airport has their own
Starting point is 00:24:34 decorating crew. The decor, the holiday decor is up on the downtown mall. I'm a very, very much a merry Christmas person and a happy holidays. I say both.
Starting point is 00:24:45 The Christmas tree was named, right? It was. It was it, Seb? Is that, was that the winning name? No, Seb did not win.
Starting point is 00:24:54 What was the winning name? Seth was the graffiti that's around town? Yeah. What was the winning name? I believe the name was oatmeal the third. Such a dumb name. It is an extremely dumb name. Oatmeal the third is the name of the Charlottesville Christmas tree.
Starting point is 00:25:08 It sounds like the person that made the list asked their five-year-old or six-year-old kid what would be a good name for a Christmas tree. Yeah. And put the results on the poll. I asked our three-year-old son. when we get another dog what do you want to call him he looks at his plate there was a twix bar on it half eaten uh he goes i want to call the dog chocolate like thank you for the suggestion that's like oatmeal the third chocolate and and the really sad part about oatmeal the third is that it's not just
Starting point is 00:25:41 a it's not just a joke name it's the third because apparently charlottesville has called their christmas trees oatmeal before yeah unbelievable well the last two headlines is UVA sports related? I think so. 15 Virginia football players make the all-ACC team. 15 Virginia football players make the all-ACC team.
Starting point is 00:26:02 Jamari Taylor first team, Brady Wilson, the center. Jamari Taylor, of course, the running back first team. Brady Wilson and Daniel Sparks, center and punter, make second team. Trell Harris, Bowley, the offensive tackle, Josie, the offensive guard, Cam Robinson, the linebacker, and
Starting point is 00:26:17 Devin Neal, third team. Chandler Morris on the honorable mention team. First team in our mind, first team in our books is Conan Owen and Sir Speedy of Central Virginia. You have a logo and you need an application for Conan Owen and Sir Speedy of Central Virginia, or who you call locally owned and operated. He is a Darden graduate, Sir Speedy of Central Virginia. 15 guys on this $30 million roster make all ACC, and Virginia is playing Duke in the ACC championship. What a historic run this has been, one of the best seasons in Virginia.
Starting point is 00:26:51 of football history and can be the best because there's still a lot of football left to be played. And speaking of UVA athletics, the next headline, the basketball teams in action tonight against Texas, 915 tip on ESPNU. Texas has scored over 100 points already this season. They run and gun and get up the floor quickly. There will not be many shot clock violations, if at all, in this contest, folks, as these two teams are looking to get up and down the court and put points on the board. This is a special game. for Ryan Odom. This is a special game for Chance Mallory. This is a special game for a team that has a lot of upside, and it's a test for Virginia. 9.15 tonight. June Wickower carried the show today. My name is Jerry Miller. This is the I Love Seville Show, guys, on a Wednesday afternoon. Thank you for joining us so long. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:27:53 Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
