What a lot of honor that was to have one of the winningness coaches in NBA history here live in the studio. It was a great moment. It was an awesome moment. Well, we are all over the UVA football beat for sure. I mean, it's train camp and we try to deliver updates on every aspect of the football program daily and leave no stones unturned. But we've talked to, I don't know, all the coaches pretty much. and probably 30 players in the past month, and we'll continue to do so. Training camp ends tomorrow, and the team will take Thursday off,

and then preparation for NC State. Heavy preparation begins Friday and Saturday as we head into game week, which is a week from Saturday. Unbelievable. 730 Scott Stadium I understand I saw something on Twitter last night

that there are 10,000 tickets ahead of where they were at this time last year Yeah baby For the season opener Home season opener And so I don't know what that means in terms of filling up the stadium

Richmond, Virginia, Southwestern Virginia, Northern Virginia, Central Virginia, the Virginia Beach, Hampton Roads area, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, Pennsylvania, all on the feed right now. Georgia has entered in the chat box. We need to talk top 25 preseason polls.

The polls are out. I get excited when I start seeing the pollsters. This is the most meaningless of all the polls. Still, it gets my blood up and going. I get a little excited when I see top 25 action. I'll start open-ended with you. The Wahoos and the receiving votes portion of both polls. Your thoughts.

Yeah, well, you know, I used to get excited about top 25 poll too because that usually came out while we were on the old ACC football tour when we about 40 of us would travel to every school in the conference in August and do our daily reports it was a bus tour although toward the end when the conference expanded to Georgia Tech and Florida State we sometimes took planes and went to some of the preseasoning season games like the kickoff classic and the Meadowlands and the pigskin classic in LA and other venues around the country. But that was kind of a signal that, hey, football season is here. And it's changed and like everything else has.

And I think it's much harder now to pick a top 25 than it was then because of all the changes in college football obviously. Brand new rosters. The rosters, it's impossible to really keep up with who has who and who has what like you used to be able

to do. So I take the polls with a little more grain of salt than I used to. A lot of times in the past you were going off of last year's results. And I think to some degree, maybe even more to a degree, they're doing that now, even though, like you said,

the rosters have changed dramatically. But the couple things struck me about yesterday's AP poll, which I think is a little better than the coaches poll, but the fact that Clemson was not in the top 25 struck me. It's been a long time since that's happened, which kind of shows you how the program has diminished in recent years. But I wouldn't go to sleep on Clemson. I think they've got maybe more talent than anybody in the league, including Miami,

who's picked pretty high. Seven in both polls for the hurricanes. Yeah. And the overwhelming thing, I guess, about the top 25 poll, even more so than I can remember is that it's dominated by the SEC and the Big Ten. And it's, I mean, of the 25, I think, like close to 20 of them were from those two conferences. And word of warning for, was it Ohio State that was picked number one? Ohio State is picked number one in both polls by an overwhelming majority by the writers, the Associated Press,

a little bit tighter margin by the coaches. Oregon and the two slot with both polls, Georgia and the three slot with both polls, and then the top three, outside the top three, the polls start getting a little bit different on both the AP and the coaches polls. Only three ACC teams in the top 25 with the writer's top, the AP poll.

Yeah, SMU and Louisville, I think we made it in. Word of caution, Ohio State fans, 20 of the last 25 years, the team that picked preseason number one did not win the national championship. Much to like the Madden curse, the cover of the video game. Yeah, pretty much. So that just goes to show that just because you're picked somewhere doesn't mean you're going to finish that way. And look what happened with Virginia last year when they were overlooked, grossly overlooked, not only

ACC voters, but the national voters, and they ended up with their best season ever in terms of wins and an incredibly high finish. Finished in the top 25, and for all we know, this year, could be even better.

So you can only put so much stock into it. And for Virginia fans, if they get off to the start that they could, possibly 4 and O going in to tell The rankings will take care of themselves. 100%.

SMU, and G. Clemson are the only teams ranked from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the top 25. Louisville's the first team in the receiving votes portion of the coaches poll. Now, one thing I should highlight is there is a boatload of Atlantic Coast Conference programs in receiving votes of both polls, including Tony Elliott's Virginia football team. The coaches see potential with Virginia football. they are at the top of the list of receiving votes. The scribes, the writers, do not see the potential with Virginia football at this point of the season. Only one receiving vote, UVA.

Was that you? No, I don't vote. I dropped out of voting a long time ago because of when they started exposing the voters' names, we started getting bombarded with hate mail from disgruntled fans around the country so I didn't need that so I stopped I stopped voting the Atlanta, so would I. The Atlantic Coast Conference

I'll throw this to you, Hootie. Miami is your reigning national champion Clemson we believe could have, and I'm with you on this, could have more talent than anybody in the ACC and their head coach has got a seat that's as hot as any in the entire country. David Sweeney's seat right now is burning his buns

and that's an understatement. Florida State, Mike Norvell, the head coach, is maybe on an even hotter seat than Sweeney. Yeah, I think he might have the hottest seat in the country. And the entire country. If it wasn't for a massive buyout,

the Florida State head coach would be hit the road, Jack, Osteo Luego. And I think that buyout drops dramatically. It did. It did. It did. Both Florida State and Clemson, you know, I could see having fantastic years. They could.

They got the talent on the roster and they got the reason to play. They're playing to save their coaches jobs and have very disgruntled fan bases. I think the Atlantic Coast Conference is being underdogged and it's being underappreciated by a lot of people in this country. Clemson opening game is going to tell us a lot. I think they play at LSU to open the season. That's a massive game for both programs, I think. That will tell us a little bit about each one of those teams and what may happen. You're 100% right.

Clemson travels to Baton Rouge, a nationally televised game on the 5th of September on ABC against the visiting, the Tigers versus the Tigers. And Death Valley versus Death Valley. That's right. That's right. Kind of crazy. There's a lot of big ACC openers this time around. I think is it Florida State to play somebody big, I think, as well. But if it's not the opening game, I think they play somebody really good early on.

So that'll tell us a little bit about them too. Virginia, of course, has got NC State and got a matchup with one of the best quarterbacks in the country. North Carolina's got TCU, ladies and gentlemen, and the opener, Hawaii and Stanford, that could be a shootout. Florida State's got New Mexico State in week one, but as the schedule, you know, continues, the Seminoles are facing some heat without question. But to your point, there's some serious, you know, primetime matchups here. Colorado and Georgia Tech in week one, that's going to be a good one.

The hurricanes defend their crown against Stanford to open the season. How about the Oregon State, Oregon State in Houston opening up? I'm kind of rattling off games here on the schedule, and then we'll get to the Atlantic Coast Conference here shortly.

Baylor and Auburn, that's going to be a hell of a ball game right there. And then in prime time, under the lights, you're going to start seeing you know, Clemson and LSU, goodness gracious. Michigan is opening up against Western Michigan right there. So UCLA and Cal,

we got some good football. Ohio State, Texas. Ohio State, Texas, that's right. Louisville and Old Miss, Wisconsin and Notre Dame, Washington State and Washington. SMU and Florida State. That's a biggie. That's a biggie right there.

Let's talk. ACC, this question's come in. It came in last week. It came in the week before. Virginia Tech fans are saying they want some more hokey chatter on the show. I get it. ACC fans are watching this program. There's a bunch of other Virginia

Tech podcasts down in Blacksport. I get that. They might want to tune into those. There's a lot of you. There's a lot of ACC fans that watch our show. What stands out to you about the Atlantic Coast Conference that we haven't covered so far? I think the league got a

little better last year and I think they should be decent this year too. Just because they didn't show up a lot in the top 25 preseason polls doesn't mean a lot because some of the SEC and Big Ten teams will annihilate each other as they go. I think there's plenty of ACC teams that are capable of playing good football. I would say probably seven, eight teams are pretty darn decent, including the Hokies. So I think it's going to be a good year for the ACC. I concur, I concur, folks. William McChesney, welcome to the broadcast. Vanessa Park Hill, Tom Stardial, welcome to the broadcast. Jeremy, Ronica, you're 100% right. Flores State in Alabama in a big-time matchup. Yeah, I felt that was they were going to meet again after last year.

You know, Alabama will be focused on that one since Florida State upset them last year before they came to Charlottesville. Yep, yep. They got first Florida State's got the matchup, the tune-up against New Mexico State, then Florida State and Alabama in a week three matchup, Jeremy, who, on the 19th of September. Florida States start to their schedule is no job. folks. New Mexico State's a tune-up. That's on August 29th and the CW. I'm looking at the schedule. September 7th. They host the Ponies of SMU in Tallahassee. That's a nationally televised game

under the lights at 7.30 p.m. Then they got Bama, at Bama, 330 ABC, a cupcake against Central Arkansas, then Virginia, Louisville, Miami, and Clemson. I mean, the head coach of Florida State, I mean, the head coach of Florida State very well could be fired before the end of September. He's got SMU and Alabama. Then he's got Virginia, Louisville, Miami, Clemson. I think that stretch will probably make or break whether he's going to be around or not. Yeah. So you were talking about as challenging, and the back end of the schedule is no joke either.

Of course they got the game against the gators. I mean, this Florida State's got a hell of a. schedule and a coach that's on a brutally hot seat right now. We'll get to, this question's come in. This one's from Roanoke. We've got a ton of people in the Roanoke Valley. What does Rackcliffe think about James Franklin and what Virginia Tech could do? I think they should be dramatically improved over the past couple of years. I mean, he's a guy who's won everywhere he's been pretty much. Much respect for him. He brought in a boatload of talent from Penn State through the portal and flipped a lot of Penn State recruits.

Penn State recruits good players. So I imagine there was a jump in the quality of players on their roster. And I did look at their schedule a couple weeks ago. I forget who they play now outside of the conference. and even in the conference. But so I can't remember if it's a negotiable or a navigatable schedule or a very challenging schedule. I'll get that for you.

I think the Hokie should be dramatically improved. I know they're ranked behind Virginia and most of the ACC polls I've seen and some of the national polls. they're ahead of Virginia in some of the national polls and also receiving votes, but I think

they have a chance to be good. And they've had an infusement of money, new leadership, and they don't have any reason not to be good. Rob Neal watching the program,

one of the biggest JMU football fans and boosters that I know, JMU and the receiving votes, Rob Neal. The Virginia Tech Hokies, September 5th, open against Virginia Military Institute. Rob Neal's son, Connor, is also a hell of a squash player. I want to highlight that. Saul Connor over the weekend. Great young man right there, Rob Neal. VMI, opening the season, Virginia Tech and Blacksburg. Old Dominion. That's a scrimmage. That's a scrimmage. Yeah, they're a 50-and-a-half-point favorite against Virginia Military Institute. Old Dominion, which this is an ODIU team, probably Virginia Tech should not overlook.

On paper. Well, they can't afford to. Exactly. They've lost, usually not at home, but they've lost the Old Dominion a couple of times. 100%. Can't take them for granted. Right, right. ODIU week two at home.

Then it starts getting into the meat and potatoes of the schedule. This is a very manageable schedule for Virginia Tech. The Hokies are at Maryland, week three, at Boston College, Chestnut Hill, week four. Pitt Panthers in Blacksburg following week. Then travel cross-country to Cal, Georgia Tech, at Clemson. So they got at Clemson and at SMU and at Miami, Virginia Tech. And of course, they close at home against UVA.

There are three marquee matchups, the Hokies. Maybe you throw a little Maryland in the mix there as well. Are road games against Miami, SMU, Clemson, and the Terps. And Georgia Tech is no pushover. that's true they've been pretty to good even though they got a new quarterback Vanessa Parkhill what do you make of James Franklin in Blacksburg you're a Penn State fan a diehard Penn State fan are you pulling Vanessa Park Hill for James Franklin as the new skipper ah she has a comment I have no doubt the Hokies will be better this year Franklin brought some quality talent with

him from Happy Valley and he recruits very well and last year was not great for Virginia Tech so she makes very good points yeah William McChesney the mayor of McIntyre says there's a boatload Hokey fans and Hokey parents that reside in Charlottesville that are watching this show right now. Jeremy, who is wondering if Mike Novell makes it through the season at all? Well, it depends. I think if he loses control of the team, especially during that one stretch, you mentioned, that three-game stretch, I think there could be a change at that point. I think the odds, just a prediction, if we're doing it,

in a prop bet? I love, got a little gamble to me. Yeah. I got a little gamble to me. If I was, if I had a yes or no on a prop bet, does Mike Norvell make it through the season? My vote is no. I would have to say no. So you would not take a prop bet with your friend Jerry Miller that, on the yes side of that propette? I would not. Okay, then we don't know. I don't think he's going to make it either. I've never had a lot of faith in Mike Norville, honestly. Yeah, he's got a mountain to climb. We got to get to Virginia. Well, you know, they had their second scrimmage last Saturday at Scott Stadium, and it went really long because they wanted to, and it was pretty cool listening to Tony Elliott yesterday he was talking about he's finally got the program in his fifth year now to where he had us has enough depth on this team to where he could do the ones versus the ones

and the ones versus the twos and have a competitive all-out scrimmage for for a lengthy amount of time and he felt like it was a big step for the program. particularly in their preparation for NC State, just to be able to have that kind of competitive depth going after each other for an extended period of time under game-like conditions. And it gave a lot of players' opportunities to step up and compete for playing time or starting jobs. And we'll be getting the too deep next Tuesday,

a little bit after our show is over. And so I think he's excited. The team is healthy. He thinks that they're way ahead of where they were at this time last year. They had a lot of question marks going into that first game against the Wolfpack and still came within one play of winning on the road. This time it's here. there's not as many questions as there was a year ago.

I think he feels really good about where Virginia football is right now heading into the season. I feel very good about where Virginia football is heading into the season. I read everything you're right. And goodness gracious, great balls of fire. Virginia football, it looks like in the preseason, has more talent on paper than I think any team has had maybe since the Algrove era.

Yeah, I would say that's accurate. And the Algrore era had pros all over the roster. Yeah. I see a stable of running backs that is as deep as, I mean, they may not have the Pyraman and Wally Lundby type headliner. Yeah, or Thomas Jones. Thomas Jones. That kind of guy, Ticky Barber. Right.

They don't have the pro headliner, but there's depth. Bo Pribula. I mean, what's the last time we had quarterback like, no. Well, Perkins was. Bryce? Bryce was somewhat. He was a running back from quarterback. Right.

Probably more explosive than Bo. Yeah. Bigger. Yeah. Bo is, I still think Boe is underrated. percent and I think he'll prove that pretty quickly he has a lot to prove he has got to have a chip on his shoulder oh yeah I think he does jilted at the all at the altar in happy valley yeah fantastic start although the guy he was behind is pretty darn good it was a pro he's doing well with the steelers

yeah is a pro is a pro yeah fantastic start at missou yeah then banged up injury riddle he had him six and one right contender for the play playoffs. Exactly. He was on the short list for first or second team all conference. Then was it an ankle that banged him up? An ankle, yeah. An ankle? It was pretty serious ankle injury and he's, which he came back from. Right. I mean, he probably shouldn't have. Exactly. Because a tough kid. Yeah. I think he's got, and you're watching this, I'm going to ask you here, I think Boe Pribula might be even an underrated passer. Well, that's something he's worked hard on in, uh, every, since he's walked on the grounds.

And the one thing they, I talked to him yesterday, actually, and he asked him about what his focus was. And it was something I talked to Des Kitchens about earlier, or last week, rather. And it was his presence in the pocket about being more patient with his progressions and not being as, apt to take off, which he has great legs, great feet to make something happen with. But I think they've wanted him to work on his poise in the pocket, and he's done so.

And he's pretty happy with where he is right now. And I think the staff is too. And I think that's one thing he wants to prove to people that he's a better passer than he's given credit for. but man, when he runs, they can cause some damage there too. And I asked him, I'll write about this probably later today, but I asked about it. I said, you know, Keith Gatherer said a couple of weeks ago

that you run angry. Where does that come from? And I said, does that come from high school? He said, even before that, he said, Pop Warner football. He said, that's just the way I've. always been. And I said, where did that come from? And he said, well, my grandfather played in the NFL back when men were men. That's what he said? Sort of. And I said, well, you had to run angry,

but he didn't have a choice back then. And he got a kick out of that. But I think he's going to be a difference maker for this program for sure. A hundred percent. A hundred percent. And, you know, and another thing to highlight, when's the last time Virginia Flip? has had a backup quarterback should something happen to Bo Pribula because of how he plays football. It's not like this guy's dropback passer, three, four seconds, get rid of the football, avoid the hit. He's going to take contact. He's a physical guy. He seeks contact.

He puts his body in the line. We saw what happened at Missouri. He may get hurt. The backup quarterback is a reality. We saw what happened with Chandler. The backup quarterback was a reality. I think that costs Virginia with it. Was it a loss to Wake Forest?

Yes. Where the backup quarterback came in and looked, frankly, no shade on him, out of his depth in that game. And that was against the Deeks. I'll leave it at that. Virginia's got a backup quarterback that's got big-time college football starting experience. Yeah, that's strongest backup quarterback they've had in a long, long time. You might have to go all the way back to Matt Schaub, Marcus Higgins. 100%.

I mean, he's playing wide receiver, punt returner at the time. Sean Moore, Matt Blundon. Yeah. Hasn't been a lot of that strong backup quarterbacks that they've had over the years. But yeah, I mean, this guy was recruited by Alabama and Nick Saban to be one of their great quarterbacks

and then left and went to pit and made an impact early in two seasons and ran into some misfortune, necessarily all of his own making, I don't think. And, you know, when he got to Charlottesville, he had a real heavy class load he had to focus on. And I think that put him a little behind in the quarterback race, not making excuses, because I think Bo would have probably won it out anyway.

But he's still right there in a quality quarterback. and I don't think a lot of programs in the country have a backup with that kind of experience and that kind of quality. So you got to feel good about that. Well, and, you know, I don't think Tony, Tony Elliott is a smart guy. Yes, he is. And his staff is smart. They knew that Pribula was probably the front runner for starting.

They also knew that Pribula. how he plays could be prone to injury. So they knew a backup quarterback was paramount. And they probably in the recruiting pitch was like, A, you're the quarterback of the future. Bow's only got one year of eligibility. Come in, learn the system. Be our guy for years to come.

And B, Bo is the guy, probably. Look at how he plays. Look at what happened at Mizzou. You very well could play this year as well. Yeah. I mean, it's hard for a quarterback to go through a 12-game schedule and make it all the way healthy. Brett and Armstrong didn't do it.

Chandler Morris didn't do it? Bo Peribula didn't do it last year? Yeah, I mean... Did Bryce do it? Bryce did, but he took some shots. There were times I didn't think he was going to get up. And he took him shots. And then I got, gosh, I can't think of his name.

now, the one guy that got hurt in the opening game against Tennessee a couple years ago. Oh, you had the gunslinger. You had the gunslinger, Tony Muskett and Anthony Calandria. Yeah, Musket got hurt in the opening game against Tennessee and throwing Calandria as a true freshman with no experience. And so, yeah, and then, you know, that happens. but it's nice to know you've got a solid backup like Eli. Jeremy Hu watching the program, Jeremy Who's been watching and listening to our content for 20 plus years.

Jeremy Who says Virginia Tech, you guys have to be throwing up in your mouth a little bit talking about that team. James? Here we go. The Virginia fans are already after each other.

He also throws the little shots fired over at Vanessa in Eureli'sville saying old James Franklin can't win the big game. Which, you know, that's part of the reason why he was canned and pink slipped in Happy Valley. Yeah. Well, the reason he got canned up there was more because he couldn't win the regular game. Right. Because they, they lost two or three in a row there that he shouldn't have lost. He struggled against top ten of the top. opponents.

James Franklin looked apart. And then it went even deeper. Yeah, he looked the part, he could recruit the part, he produced pro talent, he didn't win a lot of marquee matchups, and then to your point, got into some trouble with some losses that absolutely should not have happened.

Absolutely. Comments continue to come in on the most watch and listen to UVA sports talk show in the country. This one is for Hootie Rackcliffe. Who's going to catch the ball, fellas? you're talking about the running backs, you're talking about the quarterback.

I don't see a talented wide receiver on this roster. Prove me wrong. Jonathan and Richmond. Well, they've got 17 guys to choose from. Jesus, they got 17. Plus a couple of tight ends that are pretty good, including Dakota Twitty who can split out. 17 wide receivers. They've got 17 guys in that room.

Which is good and bad. Let's cut to the chase. Yeah, I mean. That's the position of consideration. sir. Yeah, you don't have a guy. You don't have a Malachi Fields. Yeah, you don't have a Malachi Field. You don't have, who's

the guy that's Oklahoma now that was here last year? Started with a T. I don't come to me in 10 seconds. Made a big catch in Oklahoma. Troll Harris. Yeah, Trail Harris. They don't have a trail Harris. If they do, they haven't evolved, exposed

themselves yet. But there's plenty of guys that have potential. A lot of people are waiting for Rico Flores to pop out. Please. From UCLA. Jaquan Gibson. It's a guy.

Cameron Courtney, everybody's waiting on him to make a move. Dylan Newton Short. Deshawn Martin. Let's see. I wrote down some numbers. I mean,

the Gibson kid from UMass. He started 10 games last year he had 63 receptions for 616 yards 6.3 yards per receptions per game 12th most in the FBS so he's a candidate to do some damage for his started 16 games for UCLA 65 receptions 853 yards Martin that we mentioned from Kent State started 10 games, had 33 receptions for 507 yards, four touchdowns. Cam Courtney had 25 receptions last year. Again, they're waiting on him to live up to expectations.

And he had six catches against the Hokies in that win last year. So there's plenty of guys that have potential. A freshman from Alabama, Dylan Cope, who has had some eye-popping flashes in camp and in spring ball. But there's plenty of guys that have the potential. And, you know, maybe it's not a strength because you don't have the Trail Harris's the Malachi fields. But you've got a lot of guys there with potential that can. that could still hurt you. I mean, there's

those three or four of those guys I just mentioned. They had a lot of catches at different places last year. So I think it might be the big question mark

heading in the NC State, but I don't, it's not like they're bankrupt of talent there. It's just there. They just, nobody is separated. That doesn't mean that none of them are any good. It just means that nobody is popped at this point. They got a, whoa, excuse me goodness gracious. That called me off guard, Gazuntite Jerry. They have the last five years hoots. Listen to this wide receiving top line talent. Yeah, they've had some good ones. Malik Washington. Unbelievable. Still doing well with the dolphins.

110 catches school record. Yep. Donovian Wicks. One of the best pair of hands I've ever seen. Does he play for the Packers? I think he got traded to the... Let me see if I can figure out. Let's see. Dontavian Wicks is...

The Eagles? I think he's with the Eagles. Damn, look at Hootie. He's with the Philadelphia Eagles right now. He's made some big catches in training camp. Selected in the fifth round in the 2023 NFL draft by the PAC attack. I think they got a steal. Traded to the birds.

Hootie Rackcliffe is on point per usual. Last five years, Malik, Washington. in the league playing on Sundays. Don Tavian Wicks in the league playing on Sundays. Malachi Fields, catching balls by it from Jackson Dart, just had a preseason game where he caught a touchdown. Right. Fantastic touchdown where he made a defensive back looks small.

Charlottesville Kid, Montchello High School. Torell Harris at Oklahoma looking to improve his draft stock. Made a hell of a catching training camp. I saw it on Twitter yesterday. Right? Katon Thompson. a wide receiver hybrid came in initially as a quarterback, and then the late great Lavel Davis,

who would have been a pro at 6 foot 5, 6 foot 6 foot 6 if it wasn't for, you know, a terrible. A maniac. Yeah, a lunatic that took his life. I mean, that's top line talent right there. Yeah. Yeah, they've brought in, they've had some really good wide receivers.

And, you know, I wouldn't be surprised. of a couple of these guys came through a big time as the season develops. But again, just because they haven't popped, so to speak, doesn't mean that they're no good. I think there's a lot of guys potentially that could cause a lot of damage out there. Chad Wood watching the program. He is one of the greatest running backs in Jefferson District football history. the single-wing attack under Steve Isaacs featuring Brian Lesconek for the Western Amar Warriors.

Chad Wood was a part of that. Now, an assistant coach at Western Amar with the football program, he's watching the show. Vanessa Parkhill snaps back at Jeremy Hu. I like it. College football has started. I love it. She says, oh, trust me, Jeremy Hu. I'm glad Franklin is gone from Penn State.

James Franklin earned the nickname Big Game James for a reason. I think he will be a show. shot in the arm for the Hokies this year, though. I'm sure Hokie fans would love to see a few nine or ten win seasons in Blacksburg. Absolutely. William McChesney, the mayor of McIntyre, says Calandria is playing for the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He's starting. What does Rackleff think about Calandria?

I've always thought he was a good player, good quarterback, a good kid. I enjoyed covering him for a couple of years. I thought they made a huge mistake. not starting him the final game of the season against in Blacksburg a couple years ago. Not thinking that that was going to cause him to leave, but when I saw that, I knew he was going to be gone. I didn't think there was any question about it. I don't think they did him right, and I can't say that. I blame him for leaving, and he's done great things ever since he left here.

He had a great year at UNLV last year and beat out last year's Virginia backup quarterback, Danny Kalin, for the Nebraska starting quarterback job. So I think Calandra is terrific. I'm a huge Calandra fan. The dude's a gunslinger. He is undersized and epitomizes not the size of the fight of the dog in the fight, but the heart. The size of the fight inside the dog. dog that matters. He had a lot of heart. A lot of moxie. A lot of moxie. I think Calandria is the epitome of what college football is about. Basically, a hired gun. He's a quarterback,

he's a mercenary quarterback. He sure has been. Yeah, he was making some bank at UVA. Rummer Mill had him in the $800,000 a year range. Yeah. Probably made some bank at UNLV. Oh, probably, yeah. Was he the Mountain West Conference? player of the year? Offensive player of the year? I think he was. I think he was too. Put up eye-popping numbers like video game numbers. Right. And PAR laid that into a starting quarterback

role in Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm sure he's making bank up there. I would imagine it's well north of a million dollars. Yeah. Probably more than that. Yeah, probably more than that. And is this his final year of eligibility? I think so. Because he did two at UBA, one at UNLV. Now, Nebraska.

Does he get the fifth with this law? suit or no? I can't keep up with that stuff. That's a good question. He might. He might get another year. Mark Brown says, hokey talk, I need to get my pepptobismal. Yeah, I don't think most people tune in to this show to learn about the Hokies. Mark Brown. Jeremy, how many wins you think UBA gets this year, Hoots? I think right out of the gate, I think they get. at eight. I think they could get nine or ten if things fall their way and they win some of the close games, the 50-50 games. They're only an underdog in three games according to ESPN's projections, and that's at Florida State, at SMU and in Blacksburg. So I'm not sure that they'll

lose all three of those. So I think they are in for a really, really good season again. I think Virginia football is going to, and I'm an optimist and a glasses half full fella, but I think Virginia football is going to kickstart what could be the overall greatest sports season in UVA sports history. And it's going to start with Tony Elliott's team who has more talent on the roster than any time that I can remember since maybe 20 years ago and the Algrore era. So we're talking a generation. Yeah. The point of concern I have is wide receiver.

We've covered that on this program. We've talked quarterback. We talk running back. We talk defensive. We talk tight end. Maybe we shift some attention to defense. There's a guy by the name of Cam Robinson that suffered a pretty horrific knee injury, I believe in the ACC championship against the Duke Blue Devils.

That was November 8th, actually. Was it before the NCC championship? In the first Duke game. Okay. And the first, thank you, in the first Duke game. Nine months later? Yeah, it's amazing. This guy's playing?

Out there in seven-on-seven drills. What's his status? Well, we asked Tony about that yesterday, and he said that they're hopeful that he'll be able to start or at least play against NC State. They're going to be smart about it. The doctors and trainers are the deciding factors in this, I think. He will get full contact Friday and Saturday when they start the heavy preparation for the Wolfpack

and they'll monitor every little aspect of his movement. And they'll trust him too about how he feels. how he cuts and how he handles all the challenges thrown at him. So I think there's a good chance that he'll play. And if he plays, I imagine he'll probably start. And certainly it would be a welcome thing for the defense, even though they've got their six deep at linebacker with some really quality guys.

in that mix. So if he doesn't play, I still don't think that it's going to hurt him that bad because they've got some really good other guys like Maddox Marcellus and Caleb Hardy and Landon Danley, just to name a few. I mean, Maddox filled in for Cam Robinson. Yeah.

And was it? And Danley, too. Was an animal. Yeah. Yeah. Like, he's a stud. He is a stud. Yeah, he starts, if it's not for Cam Robinson,

who prior to the injury was the best defensive player in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Yeah. Like if KM. Robinson and you were right, now you jogging by memory, your memory is on point. It was the first Duke. It was the first Duke game. And he did not play the full season up until that point. He's got off, he didn't play the opening game because of a collarbone. Was that the wolf pack?

Yeah, he had a collarbone. fracture, I think, in preseason camp. When he was on the field, he was forcing fumbles, he was getting picks, he was taking balls to the house. Oh, he had an unbelievable stuff. TFLs. We were talking last year, now I'm like the memories, you know, I'm still got preseason ranking mode here, my brain here, now I'm trying to go into week one mode here.

He scored a touchdown off of interception return. He scored a touchdown off of a fumble recovery. He had a safety against Washington State. Animal against Florida State? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, he was, he's all over the field. We were talking on the show on the Jerry and Jerry show last year that this guy is maybe the ACC defense player the year.

Well, yeah, he would have easily been if he hadn't gotten hurt. If he hadn't gotten hurt. So my question, viewers and listeners, asking this question, do you rush them? Do you slow them? When do you play them? Well, again, I think you got to be smart because you don't want to, end his season prematurely because of if he's not ready. Or hurt as pro prospects.

And then even that, it's even more so because. Especially coming off a knee. Yeah. You just, you can't afford to take risks with something like that. So again, I think they probably monitor every step he takes in practice. put him through all kinds of tests to see how stable it is. And I don't know if he'll be wearing it. I guess he'll be wearing a knee brace.

I don't know that. But I think just knowing the kind of player he is, that if there's any way possible, he'll be out there. Chad Wood watching the program, this guy bleeds orange and blue. If I was to cut Chad Wood's skin open, I'd see orange and blue and and Brownsville Market chicken biscuits coming out from Crozay over there, Western Amar High School. That's right.

Maybe some IPAs from Pro Renata, Chad Wood, or the Northern Lights from Star Hill, if I sliced your skin open, would be coming out. He's saying nine to ten wins, gentlemen, nine to ten wins, and they will put a statue in the cow pasture. Chad Wood says the only downside of 11 wins last year and the downside of 19. to 10 wins this year is the bottom feeders in the SEC are going to roll out the red carpet for Tony Elliott. Yeah, I'm sure that if they have another great season, that there's going to be some schools that will come after him. I don't think Tony will leave because I think he's forever grateful for the opportunity he got here and the faith that they've had in him off to a really rough start as we've been well documented on the show.

But I think he's forever thankful to Carla Williams and that group of people that supported him through the rough times. Three wins, three years to start the season, his career at UVA. 11 wins in three years, which he matched in one year last year. Right, the least amount of wins in all of college football over a three-year campaign. Yeah. Major college football. Right.

What he posted in his first three years. But, hey, I'll tell you what, you want the best cure for anything? Winning. Oh, winning cures all ill. 100%. Winning cures absolutely everything. And Tony Elliott, 11 wins, most wins in program history. Could have been more than 11 wins.

Should have been in Wake Forest. Should have been more than 11 wins. Could have been 12 wins. Yeah. Could have been a college football playoff berth. Could have been. Could have been. What a should have, of course, though.

This team right here, we think, and this man's been doing this for nearly 50 years on the ACC and UVAB, we think this team has more preseason roster talent than last year's team. It does. I think it's a slam dunk it does. That doesn't mean actuality or outcome, but it just means roster depth and talent. Yeah, absolutely. And, I mean, just the fact that he. talked about how for the first time in five years he was able to have the kind of scrimmage

that he wanted because of the depth and the talent on this team speaks volumes. And some people see the wide receiver room as a weak point. I can't find a vulnerability on this football team. Usually it's something will jump out at you. And again, just because they don't have anybody who's flashed, consistently at wide receiver doesn't mean they don't have guys that can that can't beat you.
