Starting point is 00:00:07 Good Tuesday morning, guys. I'm Jerry Miller, and thank you kindly for listening to the Jerry and Jerry show, listening and watching. This show is alive on 27 social media and podcasting platforms. And folks, it's no secret. The numbers back it up. This talk show right here, the Jerry and Jerry show, is your most watched and listened to UVA sports talk show that's out there. And we encourage you, the viewer, and listener, to shape the show. That's the beautiful thing about social media and podcasting. You, the viewer, and listener, can offer your comments on the feed, and we will relay them live on air as they dictate the pace and tempo of our commentary. There's a lot to cover on the program. Virginia beat a Delaware team that frankly looked outgunned and outmanned in every phase of Saturday's college football game. The quarterback, UVA, Beau Prevula, accounted for five touchdowns. does that silence Bose naysayers or are those naysayers, you know, still chirping and playing the waiting game as UVA heads to Florida State for a matchup that's on national TV against a Seminoles team that's frankly searching for an identity and playing for their head coach's, you know, job security? We'll talk about that on the program today.
Starting point is 00:01:30 I don't know if it's surprised you or not, but Virginia is a favorite to win in Talmud. The line open at one and a half points, Virginia favored. Now it's uptick to two and a half. We'll break down that contest today. We'll also talk the good, the bad, and the ugly from the Atlantic Coast Conference, the week that was, and the upcoming week. Virginia Tech is gaining a lot of momentum. They are a favorite on Friday, nationally televised game on ESPN against the Pitt Panthers.
Starting point is 00:02:00 We'll talk about that today. We'll talk Miami and Clemson and a number of. other ACC matchups on the docket of merit. And of course, some college basketball with an exhibition now behind us and the talk about a chance Mallory ankle injury. So much to cover. Judah Wickhauer is behind the camera. I think you need to get the group live when you can, J. Dobs.
Starting point is 00:02:20 But without further ado, if you can welcome the star of our show, Judah Wickhauer, he's the director. It's Jerry Cooty Ratcliffe, the namesake of Jerry Ratcliffe.com, a Virginia Sports Hall of Famer, and a man that is leading a team that's publishing 40 to 50, 50 pieces of fresh UVA sports content per 30-day period. Folks, 40 to 50 pieces of content at just $8 a month. If you're watching and listening and not subscribing to Jerry Rackliff.com, you're making
Starting point is 00:02:47 mistake. It's the price of a cup of coffee, and it gives you more content than any media platform possible. Hootie, the show is yours. It's that busy time of year? Well, yeah, it'll get busier as we go, but. Night football games. bleeding into exhibition basketball games.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Too many night games. This Saturday is not a night game. Yeah, it's 3.30. Yep. And it's a tough place to play. I mean, Virginia has only won once in Tallahassee since Florida State started playing in the ACC. And of all the teams and coaches who have won there,
Starting point is 00:03:33 it was Mike London. back in 2011 when Virginia, I think, became the first team ever to beat Florida State and Miami on the road in the same season, which was kind of strange. But it's a tough place to play, and as Tony Elliott said, after beating Delaware Saturday night, in his mind, and you have to understand where he's coming from, To get to Charlotte, you've got to go through Tallahassee, and certainly that was the case for many of the years that he was the offensive coordinator at Clemson, because back then, the ACC played divisional play, the Atlantic Division and the Coastal Division, and Florida State and Clemson were always battling for the Atlantic Division.
Starting point is 00:04:30 I think in 17 years of a divisional play, one of those two schools was the ACC champion 12 times and probably played in the championship game more than that. But it's no easy piece of keg. I was like you, I was really, really surprised when I saw the Virginia was favored win that game. that, you know, in the preseason, when ESPN did its season projections, they had Virginia losing to Florida State that whole time and even up until this past week. And now all of a
Starting point is 00:05:14 sudden Virginia's favored by the odds makers to go into Tallahassee and win, which, that's a tall task. I was shocked. I was absolutely shocked. And Florida State is two and two on the season. Florida State has victories against mid-tier, no names. New Mexico State and Central Arkansas. Right. They got a loss to SMU that's a nail-biter, 27 to 24. The ponies are a good football team. They lost to Alabama 50 to 36. That game was actually
Starting point is 00:05:48 a little closer than a 14-point outcome. Florida State in that first half looked like the better football team. Then adjustments were made at halftime and Alabama started flex in their muscles, if you may. Alabama is a second half team. There's no question about that. And once they got it together, there was no stopping them.
Starting point is 00:06:07 But, you know, you take most teams in the ACC are pretty much around the country, and you give them the same schedule, and most teams are probably going to be two and two, most likely. 100%. That's the point I was going to make.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Including Virginia. Right. having to go into Tallahassee and win with their backs against the wall. It's because they've, after Virginia, they've got a kind of a murderer's row coming up. They play Miami, Louisville, and Clemson. And if I'm a coach on the hot seat, I'm not sure I like that schedule very much. And you see where Hoots and I are going straight to the Florida State game. We will talk the Delaware game.
Starting point is 00:06:55 We clearly all saw that Delaware was. overmatched. That was pure domination. We will talk Bo's five touchdown performance. We do have questions about Peyt Lewis, whether he's in the doghouse. We have questions about the wide receiving core, in particular Rico Flores stepping up and whether that's transferable to, you know, more challenging opponents. Still, let's look at Florida State's schedule. Hootie is exactly right. Following the home contest against UVA, Florida State travels to Louisville. I mean, Louisville's a really good football team. They travel to Miami. You're looking at a national championship contender in Miami. They're playing in South Florida, Florida State. They host Clemson,
Starting point is 00:07:35 travel to Boston College, travel to Pitt, NC State at home, and Florida at home to close the season. Murrish Roe's understatement. I mean, you're talking like death row right there. Yeah. For a coach that's coaching for his job. Most likely, yeah. And, you know, having fired their AD two weeks ago, kind of clears the path for that. I don't know if I'll hire a new AD or just allow whoever's running the show down there right now to make that decision. And whenever that decision comes, I'd be surprised if he lasts the regular season without getting the, getting chopped.
Starting point is 00:08:15 I guess we should talk about the chickens here, the fighting chickens that show not much fight, look like plucked chickens to me, look like the fried chicken. My wife cooks extremely well. Yeah. Scatter shooting. What did you see in that contest? Well, you know, I thought, well, part of it, you've got to look at their quarterback
Starting point is 00:08:36 who can throw the heck out of it, left the game early with a non-contact injury. Heard he's, looked like I heard his knee. I never heard a final diagnosis of that, but that really killed their offense. And Virginia came to play. I think they realized that they needed to get their act together again after losing against West Virginia the week before. But they made a lot of corrections.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Delaware featured a defensive philosophy that was similar to West Virginia. They just didn't have the personnel to carry it out that West Virginia did. But Virginia responded well to that. that's one reason Probula had such a great passing night because Delaware like West Virginia was jamming the
Starting point is 00:09:32 tackle box full of defenders and that left them vulnerable and Bo was very accurate it was 23 of 28 I think or something like that four touchdowns and nearly 300 yards and
Starting point is 00:09:47 it was nice to see Rico Flore's I've been anxious to see him play. We didn't see him much against West Virginia. It was his first game back. Look, dominant at times. He made a spectacular catch in that game. Yeah. And Delaware certainly didn't have an answer for him.
Starting point is 00:10:07 He had nine catches. He was targeted 10 times. And it was nice to see Cam Courtney break out at the slot. They need production out of that position. And he scored two touchdowns and made a really nice run, breaking a tackle on a 52-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown and then caught another touchdown just right after that. But they're getting a little healthier in the wide receiving core
Starting point is 00:10:38 and getting a few more guys out there, and that should help their passing game, and they're certainly going to need that down in Tallahassee. Five touchdowns for Bow. a hell of a way to rebound from a West Virginia game that had some of the fan base already calling for the backup quarterback. He looked like a completely different quarterback. Is this as much of bow rebounding, or is this more the defense that was Delaware? I think more the defense. I think West Virginia had a better game plan and better personnel.
Starting point is 00:11:15 and I don't think Virginia adjusted to it very well and in the West Virginia game. I think with some time to prepare for Delaware, who again didn't have the, I don't think have the defenders of the same quality to give Virginia that much of a problem. But I think Bo, I don't think, I don't think the West Virginia game was a sign that Bo has problems.
Starting point is 00:11:53 I think he had a little bit of an off night. I think the whole offense had a little bit of an off night. Whole team did. Yeah. And I think he's back to normal again. I don't know that he'll be a Heisman contender, but I think we'll see a much better and more consistent Bo, the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:12:15 Comments continue to come in. This one from William McChesney, who's at the ACAC Amarral Square right now, watching us on the treadmill while getting his steps in. Good for him. Go get it, man. Thank you, Bill, for enjoying your treadmill workout with the Jerry and Jerry show.
Starting point is 00:12:32 We appreciate that. Absolutely. James Madison is watching the program in Mineral. James and his wife have not missed a home football game. I think the last time they missed a home football game The Stegosaurus was walking along the lawn. Jays Madison says this. What's going on with Peyton Lewis?
Starting point is 00:12:52 Is he injured or in the doghouse? I'll add a little bit of color on Peyton Lewis. Peyton Lewis is the running back, the Tennessee running back, the former volunteer where Coach Tony Elliott had gotten his face. Was that week one? It was week two? I think it was week two, I believe. It looked like they had a little back and forth, and Tony Elliott looked like, at least from body language and what we saw on the television, told him to go sit on the bench.
Starting point is 00:13:24 And frankly, I don't think Peyton Lewis has seen the football since then. Yeah, and his name, frankly, hasn't come up in any of the press conferences that we've had with the coordinator or the Tony Elliott. And the coaches haven't mentioned him. So I don't know if he's injured. Don't know if he's in the doghouse. Don't know if he's just, I don't know. There's no answer to that right now. Maybe we'll find out today.
Starting point is 00:13:58 But I do know that Keith Gathers, the running backs coach, told us prior to the season opening that Lewis had to have. had a more difficult, more challenging transition into the program than some of the other transfer backs. Some of it was academic. Some of it was adjusting to a different system, but it didn't go as smoothly as I guess anyone planned. So somewhat of a mystery. I mean, certainly the guy is talented. He got some good playing time at Tennessee. didn't start, but he contributed. On paper, it looks like the best running back in the backfield.
Starting point is 00:14:45 On paper. Yeah, on paper he does. He's a big back and he's fast and credentialed. Yes, yeah. I mean, he checked all the boxes on paper. On paper. Then, you know, you don't gain any yards on paper either. So we're not quite sure what the issue is there.
Starting point is 00:15:06 434 D3V on YouTube is watching the program. He highlights the significance of the game on Saturday. And he says Saturday's matchup against Florida State will show all of us in Wahoo Nation what this team is actually about. I would agree. I think this is going to be the best indicator of any of the games they've played so far as to the quality of this team and what we can expect the rest of the season. because after Florida State, they only have two more road games all rest of the way. And both of those are challenging. They're probably going to be underdogs and maybe both, at least...
Starting point is 00:15:49 SMU. Well, I was going to say in Blacksburg right now. But SMU, I mean, SMU is lost, so it's not like they're unbeatable. Yeah. SMU top 25, Virginia Tech knocking on the door. talk if the Hokies are for real. They also have a road game at Wake. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:16:08 I forgot about Wake, and I shouldn't because Wake is... Sneaky good. We said they're sneaky good and they are. They went out to Louisville and you called it. Handed the cards of loss. Yeah, you called it. And, you know, they're getting
Starting point is 00:16:26 a lot out of the bang for their bucks down there in Winston's Sable. And in this era of $30 million rosters, Look at what the demon deacons are doing. Yeah. Incredible. It's pretty amazing.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Yeah. And they do this consistently. Yeah, they do. They overachieve consistently. They've always hired good coaches. Yeah. One of them was your, weren't you tight with one of them? A couple of them, actually.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Jim Grobe. Jim Grove is, that's what I was thinking. Gosh, his name escapes me at the moment. He went on to coach the Detroit Lions and the Indianapolis Colts. he was my golfing buddy and I can't think of his name right now. Jim Caldwell. Jim Caldwell, yeah. How could I forget that?
Starting point is 00:17:18 Yeah, I've been close with a couple of their coaches down there. But those guys, I don't know if they find ways. They just find a way to win. And you got to admire that. They take less talent and just make. Winners out of it. Absolutely. Beautiful campus, fantastic education, tight-knit alumni network that does a fantastic job of looking out for recent graduates.
Starting point is 00:17:48 I mean, just a fantastic school to matriculate through Wake Forest and Winston Salem. Ray is watching on the eastern shore. He says, good morning, gentlemen. Best wishes to you all. Hi, Ray. I enjoy the Delaware game, and I agree this Saturday will reveal quite a bit for Virginia. He said Wake Forest was scary against Louisville, tough times ahead. And he says Syracuse, yet another game I'm unable to attend due to the game time at night.
Starting point is 00:18:17 So Ray's watching on the Eastern Shore. Comments are coming in faster than I can keep up. Renee Petterford wants to talk. Of course, the basketball team, the exhibition matchup. I figured Renee would pop up with basketball. And what's going on with Chance Mallory's injury here. Let's talk about the Virginia matchup against Florida State. Jerry rackliff.com is your source for anything game coverage, anything analysis, anything commentary.
Starting point is 00:18:40 It's $8.8 a month, $8 a month, $8 a month, $8 a month, the price of a cup of coffee, and Jerry rackliff.com. Two and a half points the line has moved. Virginia is favored it. Open at one and a half. Where do you want to go with that? Yeah, it's hard for me to fathom that because a lot of the factors we've already mentioned is, you know, Tallahassee is traditionally a tough place to play. they've got talent it's not like that they're bankrupt of talent down there
Starting point is 00:19:09 I don't know about the coaching which is obviously it's a big question mark and their fans are not happy with it but they're desperate I'm sure they were delighted to find out that they're underdogs to Virginia and it's going to feature a couple of the
Starting point is 00:19:29 most under in my opinion two of the most underused players in college football and Xavier Brown for Virginia. And Deuce Robinson, the big receiver for Florida State. I mean, this guy, to me, is an first-team All-American, and he's called. I mean, one of the best players in the conference. He's in the country, in my mind. He's only called 13 passes in four games.
Starting point is 00:19:54 And to me, I would throw to him 13 times a game. but they have a quarterback who's a bit of a dual threat, but he's not as good as West Virginia's quarterback, I don't think. He's talking about Ash and Daniels. He's only completing 59% of his passes. He's looked like, I've watched some Florida State football, just knowing that they were going to match up with UVA. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:26 The Null's quarterback has looked like a deer in headlights at times. Yeah, I mean, he's thrown five interceptions already as well. And he's rushed for 190 yards. So, you know, he's mobile. I think he's probably the least talented quarterback they've had there in a while. And I think there's going to be a lot of pressure on him. I think John Ruzinski will probably throw a lot of stuff at him to try to rattle him early. try to force him into making some mistakes.
Starting point is 00:21:03 And that actually could be the key to the game if they can get him to turn it over. I mean, and you look at his history, three years at Stanford, a cup of coffee at Auburn last year, now the starter in Tallahassee. When he was starting quarterback at Stanford, interceptions were common. Yeah. He had eight picks in 2023, just 11 touchdowns, 12 picks in 2020. 24 at 10 touchdowns. Auburn, literally a cup of coffee, still three and two touchdowns to picks.
Starting point is 00:21:37 And now with Florida State, six to five touchdowns to picks. This guy turns over the football. He does. And I'm sure that's something that's going to be in the game plan to try to take advantage of that. And Virginia's secondary will be tested early to see if they can handle what he throws at him. but I think it's going to come down to Virginia's pass rushing if they can bottle up their main running back, who's pretty decent. He's gained 400 yards on the season and rushed it 64 times.
Starting point is 00:22:15 But if they can bottle up their run and force him to throw it and put some pressure on him, maybe get a couple of turnovers and turn the game in Virginia's favor early. Comments put him in the feed. You mentioned Rico Flores. Good night. This guy was hyped as I mean, Des Kitchens called him the guy in the wide receiver room that could carry the unit and needed to step up.
Starting point is 00:22:42 He's got pedigree from previous stops and he looked great against Delaware. Is this the Rico Flores we could expect moving forward? I think so. You know, he's got a little pizzazz to him, I think.
Starting point is 00:22:57 And he's obviously got talent. He was recruited by Notre Dame and played there for two years before he went out to UCLA. And I had some pretty positive results out there. And he was bothered by hamstring for a long period of time. And now he seems to be pretty healthy again. And he's got some other guys in that receiving room that can complement his ability. And when you got a playmaker out there at that one wide receiver spot,
Starting point is 00:23:36 and then it helps lift the other guys to where they can become more effective because he draws a lot of attention. And I think with him being healthy, their passing game is going to improve. Might take a dramatic jump, actually. Scott Jervin watching the program. He's a Jerry Raglife.com staff writer. He's fantastic at what he does. Does a great job.
Starting point is 00:23:59 Scotty German, love when you watch and listen to the show. Scott, I enjoy reading your content on Jerry Ratcliffe.com. He says, ask Jerry what he thinks about the schedule that has Virginia five games into the season before their first true road test. This is what's bothering me the most about the trip to Tallahassee. Well, I guess there's the question mark, is this a good road team or not? And also we should highlight that week one was supposed to be in Brazil. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:32 So we had week one that was supposed to be in Brazil, some kind of contract. We still don't have clarity on what happened there. I don't know that we ever will. I don't think we ever will. I don't think they were selling tickets for one thing. Yeah, I don't think they were selling tickets. There may not have even been a signed contract. Right.
Starting point is 00:24:46 So there may not have been a penalty payout that UVA earned because that Brazil tilt did not materialize against the Wolfpack. Scott's point is it's an untested road team Virginia. I think that's the point he's making. It truly is. I mean, they say that Charlotte was a neutral field, but it really wasn't. It was almost like playing a West Virginia home game because there were so many Mountaineer fans there and tribute to them for showing up. And so few Wahoo fans.
Starting point is 00:25:18 And so few Wahoo fans. It was hardly a whisper. But I think that's a big question mark right now is whether this team can go on the road and win. They certainly didn't look like they were ready for that road test in Charlotte a couple of weeks ago. They just seemed disjointed out of sync, out played, out coached, out physicaled, out everything. and they've got to prove now that they can win on the road. And this is a tough venue to do that in.
Starting point is 00:26:03 I didn't see any of the Florida State game this past weekend, so I don't know what kind of crowd they had for central Arkansas, but traditionally that place fills up. I know it's not been the case so much. the last year or two with, there are only 9 and 19 the last two years plus this season, overall in 3 and 14 in the ACC.
Starting point is 00:26:34 So a lot of the enthusiasm is gone. And a lot of people want to coaching change. So there's some people don't show up the games to protest. And, I don't know. I still think Doke Walker is a tough place to play. I think they'll probably show up for this game because they know it's... Critical.
Starting point is 00:26:59 It's a critical game for them. It's a critical game for both teams. Totally agree with your analysis. The fans that out there that are overlooking this game against Florida State and maybe don't have the memory of Doke Walker and Florida State, I don't get it. I've been there at the height of their... Doug Campbell. height of their winning
Starting point is 00:27:24 and that was as tough place to win as anywhere in the country in my book when they had it going. But, you know, right now, if I had to pick, I think I would pick Florida State to win. Who do you? I would do the same.
Starting point is 00:27:38 I just, this team's got to prove to me that it can win on the road. 100%. So far, the one test, they failed miserably. Yeah. I mean, and you look at the NC, NC State's 2 and 0 and 1 in conference play. The NC
Starting point is 00:27:53 state win has lost a lot of luster. I mean, the Wolfpack folks have lost to, they lost to Vanderbilt, and the only wins they have are against Richmond and App State. They beat the brakes off of Richmond, 73 to nothing. App State was a dogfight. App State's always good.
Starting point is 00:28:09 Appalachian State. And that's an NC State Appalachian State matchup that means a hell of a lot to Appalachian State. Who's Virginia beat? This is, as Scott Germans making as Hootie's making. This is where we figure out what, this is where we figure out
Starting point is 00:28:27 what kind of minerals that UVA football has. Yeah, I'll give them credit for beating NC State in the opener because NC State was supposed to be better than what they are. But, and Virginia dominated that game, I think they embarrassed NC State. And I think they've really thrown the way they've beat,
Starting point is 00:28:51 them in that game it's really throwing her program out of sync. They still shouldn't have lost to Vanderbilt last weekend, or a weekend before, but still, I think that, you know, at the time I thought that was a really good win. And again, they didn't look like the same football team against West Virginia, and they steamrolled everybody else, which they should have. I thought all along this was going to be the real test in Tallahassee to see what kind of season this is going to be because this is a conference game and it's a it's a game against a team that's struggling but still plenty of talent in that program they've in spite of the losing seasons they've had they've still
Starting point is 00:29:46 recruited well every year and they've got plenty of NIL money I don't know that that they've got enough money to buy out their coach, but they've got money for talent. Nine minutes until we closed the show. He's heading to the Tony Elliott Press Conference, which is within the hour. He's one of the only media that's actually in-person at the Tony Elliott Press Conference, Jerry Rackleff.
Starting point is 00:30:13 Another reason why you should subscribe to Jerry Rackleff.com at eight bucks a month. Let's look at the Atlantic Coast Conference Landscape. You have a Friday night matchup on national television with a program that's, you know, I mean, let's cut to the chase. They're gaining momentum with James Franklin. They got the Pitt Panthers on Friday. Virginia Tech. What do you make of this matchup Hoots? What do you make of Virginia Tech first? Yeah, I think they're just about what I thought they'd be. They're much improved.
Starting point is 00:30:43 I think they're pretty much where I thought they'd be right now. I think the pit game for them is going to be a lot like the Florida State game is for Virginia that will tell us, a lot about the way the rest of their season is going to go. They've struggled with Pitt a lot over the years, so it's going to be, is that game in Pittsburgh? That games in Virginia Tech. It's in Blacksboro. That's a feather in Tech's cap, so they could actually dominate that game at home. Three and a half point favorites, Virginia Tech as of now, ESPN Friday night national television, 7 o'clock kick, over under at 54.5, and it features an unblemished
Starting point is 00:31:23 Virginia Tech team, 4 and O overall, 1 and O in conference play against an unblemish Pittsburgh team, 4 and O overall, 1&O in conference play. Virginia Tech, do we say they've played nobody? I mean, what are we going to characterize Maryland in Boston College? Pretty lame schedule so far. At Maryland, they get a win, but. Maryland's horrible. Horrible, yeah. Boston College, they went in Chaston Hill.
Starting point is 00:31:53 Boston College. This is where we both say they're horrible. Yeah, but BC had a chance to win. BC had a chance to win. BC had a chance to win. The Eagles 22, two and two overall, own one in conference play. So this matchup, Pitt and Virginia Tech, what it means to the Hokies is very similar to UVA and Florida State Hoots. Yeah, I think because it's in Blacksbury, I would probably pick Tech to win,
Starting point is 00:32:18 but if it was in Pittsburgh, I think I would pick Pitt to win. And so I think that's going to be that slim on margin. The marquee matchup on this weekend is Clemson's matchup against Miami. Yeah, and even though Clemson's improved, I don't think there are any match for Miami. Miami, they stumble every now and then and makes you – it leaves a question mark in your mind if they're really one of the elite teams in the country, because I think most of the elite teams don't stumble like they have, even though they're still unbeaten.
Starting point is 00:33:00 But I don't see Miami losing that game. Miami is a touchdown favorite. That game's in Death Valley. Miami is seven-point favorite, the over-under at 48 and a half. Excuse me, the line has moved quickly. It opened at seven. it's now up to 16 and a half. It opened at seven.
Starting point is 00:33:19 It's moved to 16 and a half. I'm looking at the draft king's, uh, uh, odds makers, uh, a sports book right now tied to draft king. Seven it opened now up to 16 and a half.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Um, good, the bad, the ugly from the ACC with the weekend that was. Anything else that stood out to you, Hootie? Well, uh, we already talked about Lake Forest beating Louisville on the road.
Starting point is 00:33:42 That was major. Um, even though we know the Wake does that and Louisville has a tendency to lose a game every year that it shouldn't, I'm still surprised they lost that game because they looked like they had gotten their act together. Their quarterback was playing well. They've got really good running backs.
Starting point is 00:34:01 They've got a good defense. Handed to Wake. I guess you better watch out for those guys. They'll sneak up and bite you, just like they got Virginia last year. Absolutely. We got four minutes left. Do you want to go? Go talk some hoops.
Starting point is 00:34:18 I was going to say four minutes left. I've got to talk hoops here. What did you make of the exhibition? Less than I did the exhibitions they played last year. And it's hard to take a game too seriously when you're playing outdoors and the coaches have got sunglasses on and half the courts in the shade and half the courts in the sunshine. but I don't think this game very seriously at all. I think it was a fact-finding mission for Ryan Odom.
Starting point is 00:34:52 The starting back court didn't even play. I think Ryan Odom spent most of that game, he and his staff evaluating the lineups, how players react to unfamiliar systems and concepts, letting some of the more or less experienced big guys feel the physicality of a very physical Vanderbilt team to see if they can handle that and how they reacted to it. And, you know, Grunlow didn't play that much. Chilitter didn't play that much.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Kristen Harmon didn't play. of course chance didn't play I think it was I don't know how to characterize it I've never seen an exhibition quite like that I think the next two exhibitions will tell us a little bit more but particularly the one against Villanova
Starting point is 00:35:58 but I think it was more of a fun weekend than anything else to tell you the truth I hope they didn't get sunburn. It was very odd watching, to your point, coaches in sunglasses and half the court in the shame and half the court in the sunshine. I mean, that was...
Starting point is 00:36:20 I don't think we can garner a whole lot out of that. I don't think you can either. I think that's more for early season fan engagement. Yeah, I'm sure the coaches were looking at certain things with some of the lineups they were evaluating and to see if some of these new guys and some of these backup guys can contribute and how they reacted against a pretty physical opponent.
Starting point is 00:36:45 But... You know what's wild? Other than that, I don't think you got a whole lot out of that. What's wild is the start of college basketball for Virginia is five weeks away. Yeah. Election Day. That was the first scrimmage in America.
Starting point is 00:37:01 And I wonder if that's the earliest basketball scrimmage that there's been in the country. September 27th, insane. Yeah. Absolutely insane. They got Richmond Exhibition. They got an exhibition. That's the Richmond's on October 9th, Villanova Exhibition on the 22nd of September,
Starting point is 00:37:20 right before Halloween. Then they opened the season against Drexel at home on Election Day. I'm sure you're going to get a lot out of that either. I don't think I get a lot of that. Not a lot out of week two against, or excuse me, the second game against Northeastern. Eastern, but certainly something at neutral site against John Caliperi in Arkansas in the 8th November. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:37:42 That'll be a test. You got 40 seconds left before we get you to your press conference here. Anything you want to close with. That was a good recruiting weekend for Tony Elliott. They got a four-star quarterback out of the state of Georgia where he has gone before to get quarterbacks when he was at Clemson, Deshawn Watson and Trevor Lawrence out of Georgia. This kid is in six games this year. He's already thrown for almost 1,700 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Starting point is 00:38:15 Grayson Clary, 6-2-215, prototypical drop-back pocket passer. So class of 28, a four-star. Some of the schools on his list are so impressive. He might be a five-star by the time he actually signs with Virginia. Ole Miss, LSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Clemson, Oregon, and others were after him. So pretty good recruiting coup there. You, my friend, are a Virginia Sports Hall of Faber. We see why.
Starting point is 00:38:53 He gets 40 to 50 pieces of content per 30-day period on Jerry Ratcliffe.com for only $8 a month. Hell of a weekend coming up in college football, especially for Virginia. For Jerry Rackleff, who's spreading to the Tony Elliott Press Conference and Judah Wickcaro, who's behind the camera, this is the Jerry and Jerry show with the I Love Seville Show up at 1230. So long, everybody.
