Good Friday afternoon, guys.
My name is Jerry Miller, and this is the I Love Seville Show.
And as my wife and I say when we wake up every morning, it's time to make the donuts.
A lot we're going to cover on today's edition of the program, including a sinkhole on Ivy
Road that is snarling traffic all over Albemarle County and the city of Charlottesville. I
want to unpack a sinkhole right next to the new UVA Orthopedic Building, Dr. Bobby Chabra's hard work and dream, that ortho building
right there by Vivace, next to Boar's Head and Bel Air. This sinkhole, Judah Wickower,
snarled our family and thousands of other cars trying to make it to the epicenter of employment
or dropping their kids off at school in Charlottesville and around Albemarle County.
Compounding the matter was a truck.
I saw the truck as I was trying to navigate this sinkhole traffic while coming into Charlottesville.
A truck who had its top ripped off a box truck by the underpass on Old Ivy Road next to the car wash in the University
Shopping Center. So you had traffic backed up next to where a fantastic rock climbing gym will be
located. That news should start getting some momentum as construction has started on a rock
climbing gym on Old Ivy Road in the former location of Pure Bar,
the exercise studio, a building owned by talented Terry Hinderman, the mayor of Fry Spring Station,
and a good friend of this talk show. There's so much to cover on today's show. I want to ask you,
the viewer and listener, to this question. How can we authentically and genuinely and seriously, straight-faced, contemplate more density and development when one sinkhole on Ivy Road snarls traffic in the city of Charlottesville and Albemarle County and causes hundreds of kids to be late for school and thousands of men and women to be tardy for their job.
Should we not consider the traffic infrastructure,
the public transportation,
and alternative methods for getting around town
before we add density to Albemarle County
and the city of Charlottesville
when a box truck can go the way of canned tuna
having its top ripped off by an underpass.
Okay, but what are the options?
I stand by my suggestion.
The gondola system in central Virginia.
You have a gondola system with drop-offs
strategically all over Pantops, Ivy, Crozet, Keswick, city of Charlottesville. As interesting
an idea as that is, it's not going to stop something like this from happening. Why not?
Why wouldn't a gondola system keep something like this from happening? Because... It's an alternative
transportation method.
I mean, what is your alternative transportation
method? DeLoreans?
Flux capacitors?
But how many people could it...
How many people could it
help?
And if something like this happened,
and all of a sudden there's a massive backup,
are you going to redirect everyone to the gondolas and then take them to their destination 10 at a time?
I get the gondola system.
I'm not putting it down.
Well, and you've very many times on this network have put down my gondola idea.
Yeah.
But I'm not putting it down now.
I'm asking you, how is that going to help in a situation like this?
What's the old saying?
But, you know when people say that?
I don't mean to put you down, but.
Oh, yeah.
Well, I mean, an improved Charlottesville-Almora transit wouldn't have helped this. The transit system, which we know needs massive improvement,
CAT needs massive improvement.
Jaunt's being audited right now by a third party.
Did you see that story?
No, I didn't.
Jaunt's being audited by a third party,
and folks are trying to figure out whether or not this third party, Jaunt,
is living up to its mission.
But, I mean, you consider Cat.
What would Cat do if you're in a bus and there's a sinkhole on Ivy Road right next to the bypass?
At the same time, a box truck goes the way of a canned tuna with its top ripped off, closing another artery of commuter artery of.
I'm with you on that.
I've been of the opinion for years that Charlottesville is a mess.
I mean, this has nothing to do with our city council or anything.
This is just like.
This is entire.
This is poor planning for the entirety of Seville's existence.
This is Natalie Ostrand's entire campaign.
Improve bicycle safety, improve walker safety, road diets, and improve public transportation.
Her entire campaign is this.
But it doesn't matter how many people are riding bikes.
There are going to be people on the roads. And so this right here is unavoidable if there's only one in and out.
Last I checked, the gondola was not on the road.
Albert Graves, thank you for the retweet on Twitter.
My questions remain.
How many people can you take in a gondola?
And if something like this all of a sudden happens, how do you reroute all the people that are on the roads to the gondolas?
The gondolas are strategically positioned where they can be in some cases walking to where you live and or the park and ride scenario where you drive your vehicle to a parking location,
a gondola spoke or hub,
and then you hop on the gondola and you go to where you want to go.
I know people think this gondola idea
is absolutely Looney Tunes,
but there's incredibly intelligent people out there
that very much are in support of this gondola system.
I believe Hal Spencer,
one of the most talented journalists out there,
is a huge gondola proponent.
You see the potential, right?
Yeah, it may help ease things,
but it's not going to prevent something like this
from creating a massive snarl.
And what would,
while we're talking about working on infrastructure
for the future of this wonderful area and expanding housing and whatnot after you fix the infrastructure, what you need is alternate routes.
Like the gondola may help in a small way. That is an alternate in a small way that is an alternate route alternate
route how is that not an alternate route because if you get stopped because of something like this
how is that an alternate route like i said are you just do you uh do you reroute everybody to
the gondolas there was an alternate route the alternate alternate route was log jammed by a box truck that had its lid ripped off like a tin can of tuna.
Yeah, the alternate route is what?
A two-lane road with no sidewalk that goes underneath a bridge that's too low for, like, it's not an alternate route.
The alternate route was also going down Ivy Road
and that was closed off.
The bypass coming into town
from west, from Albemarle County,
western portion of Albemarle County,
into town,
snarl with traffic.
The Ivy Road
passageway from
western Albemarle County, from Crozet,
from Ivy, coming into town, just down Ivy,
driving down Vivace, University
Shops, Papa John's. That was
closed off.
Because of the sinkhole? Because of the
sinkhole. The sinkhole then
caused bypass traffic on either side
to be nightmarish. People
then pivoting to go on Interstate
64. 64
then becomes nightmarish.
I mean, it is a cluster.
And ladies and gentlemen,
this happening on Ivy Road,
a sinkhole at that bypass
next to the UVA Orthopedic Building,
Bobby Chabra's brainchild,
his beautiful baby.
Imagine if this sinkhole had happened on Pantops,
on the, is it the Diamond Interchange?
Imagine if the sinkhole had happened there. My wife and I were talking about this. We previously lived in the Keswick area. There was
one way to get into town in the Keswick area. It was going down Pantops. You could have backtracked
if you lived in Keswick, backtracked and gone the other way to Richmond, and then got on Black Hat
Road, and then backtracked onto 64 and gone
that way. But the folks that live in Pantops and Keswick, and there is a boatload of people
that live on Pantops and the Keswick area. A boatload of people.
Gordonsville's out that way too.
Gordonsville. A lot of folks from Fluvanna, Louisa. If that sinkhole had happened there,
holy jebus.
It would be way worse than it is right now.
And you know the crazy thing about this sinkhole on Old Ivy Road, J-Dubs?
They're not going to have it repaired, they say, at the earliest until Saturday night.
Is it all the way across the road?
I mean, like, how is this? It's literally in the worst case possible, worst place possible.
Like, literally the spot on Ivy Road where you can shoot in either direction of the bypass.
I'm curious.
Does anybody, do any of our viewers know how sinkholes are like?
Daily Progress has some coverage on this.
Obviously they don't pave.
It's a pipe failure.
Pipe failure closes Ivy Road.
Repairs expected to take into the weekend.
Between the US 250 bypass and Charlottesville western city limits a pipe failure damaged the roadway i mean it's the worst spot possible on
that corridor as it is right on the entry points or exit points of the bypass. Yeah. You know the spot I'm talking about? Yeah, it's right,
like,
not quite to the
gas station
with the good sandwiches.
Amen, Rob Neal.
I'd take that route with you.
Subscribe to The Gondola
with direct stops to Barracks,
Boar's Head,
John Paul Jones,
and the schools in the route.
We would be on that every single day, Rob Neal.
Love Rob Neal.
Every single day we would see you on that gondola.
I have my iced coffee in my hand.
My point is this.
You know that they are considering dense housing exactly in that location. They're considering it on the location of the former Truist Bank site
where they want to build an apartment tower.
Remember, the University of Virginia
vehemently opposed this
and said it would change the landscape
of that key gateway corridor for the university.
But isn't that inside?
That's in city limits.
That's a hop, skip, and a jump from
where this is happening. Don't get in the weeds on me here.
Also, they're
considering dense housing
on a sliver of land
close to St. Ann's
Belfield Academy
across from Bel Air, a
tony and prestigious
neighborhood that has fantastic
location. So had this housing have
been built where the truest bank site is by Moe's Barbecue, or had this housing have been built
right there, almost catty corner to St. Ann's Belfield, this problem would have been exponentially
worse. You would have had hundreds, if not thousands of additional people
right there.
And it's just a microcosm
and if Neil was there, if Neil was here
he would be pushing back on what I'm
saying. It's just a microcosm
of us continuing to
prioritize density over infrastructure.
It's just
another example, ladies and gentlemen.
Alright. A lot I want to cover on the show you
were highlighting
was it a scientific show
you wanted to promote
I'm not promoting it
you wanted to highlight
I've asked you to constantly on this program
can we do a Judas corner
can we do a Judas's corner? Can we do a Judah's jaunt?
A Judah's something?
Judah's juice.
And he said, Judah's juice, okay, we can call it that.
And he said, people won't want to hear what I have to say.
I'm trying to encourage folks to hear what you have to say.
Andrew Jaspin, there was a sinkhole in our electorate's judgment on Tuesday. So, you know, sinkholes abound this week, I guess. I think that was a zing to those who put Donald Trump into office. it comes to national politics. We are the opposite of political neutrality when it comes to local
politics. We give our opinions on local politics and wear our ideology on our sleeves with local
politics, not with national politics. I will say this to Mr. Jasper, who's a fantastic, fantastic small business owner.
His Sam Hill Entertainment, one of the best music booking businesses in the Commonwealth of Virginia, if not the East Coast, I sincerely mean that.
Creates new jobs left and right.
Sam Hill does.
I will say this to Andrew.
Trump won in a landslide.
It was not a close race.
Even the Commonwealth of Virginia, which is very blue,
was narrow in its margin, about 200 and some thousand votes.
Well, the Commonwealth is very blue in the heavily urban sections.
Which is the voting bloc.
I mean, like we said.
It's the voting block.
Like we've said, that's a microcosm of the U.S.
I appreciate the rant, though, Andrew.
Yeah, it is.
Like we said yesterday, it's tribalism.
I don't know about tribalism.
Okay.
I guess we're going to talk about this today.
We don't have to.
We can.
It's still relatively fresh.
I mean, Central Virginia, we talked yesterday, is 300,000 people, roughly, in Central Virginia.
Albemarle County and the city of Charlottesville are roughly 160,000 people.
Albemarle and Charlottesville overwhelmingly blue in how they vote.
The remainder of Central Virginia, Green, Nelson, Fluvanna,
Madison, Culpeper, Orange.
Completely
and utterly red.
The complete opposite, and there are 140,000
people. So you look at
central Virginia, our
home, and 160,000
people are blue.
140,000
are red.
And we were curious yesterday of how
that would impact the dynamics
of the region moving forward.
In particular, how the
outer counties may choose to
support or not support
Albemarle County and the city of
Charlottesville. Very
curious to see that sociology play out.
I mean, I would hope that people aren't uh me too
choosing to not not support your local business because they because they voted for someone they
certainly had that push when the former mayor was in office the kyle walker there was a movement to boycott the city.
And there was a Facebook group that grew very deep in numbers that was active during her time in office.
Oh, and I've certainly seen it other places as well more recently.
But it's still, I think, a very sad state of affairs when you choose to keep your money from a business
because they believe something different than you.
I find that to be absurd.
Yeah.
I mean...
I find that to be absurd.
You see that with some of the folks
and how they choose or choose not to support,
for example, Chick-fil-A.
Yeah.
I mean, let's cut to the chase.
Chick-fil-A is pretty damn good
the fried chicken sandwich and the nuggets are fantastic
yes it's a business
that is vocal with its politics
but can you beat the fried chicken nuggets
can you
probably not
maybe you get the tenders or the strips at Wayside
maybe
I've heard from
Browns on Avon is not the same since Mr. and Maybe. I've heard from...
Brown's on Avon is not the same
since Mr. and Mrs. Mike Brown sold it.
I've heard that too.
The recipe has changed.
I've also heard that Wayside
is not the end-all and be-all.
Oh, them fighting words.
What are you going to say?
GoCo on Cherry Avenue?
Oh, I'm not...
Are you going to say
Brownsville Market in Crozet?
I'm not providing guidance
in these art-monitor words. Are you going to the cocksville Market in Crozet? I'm not providing guidance in these art of my words. Are you going
to the cock block?
Are you going to the cock block and saying KFC?
Raising canes?
No. Well, if you're going to say Wayside is
not the end all be all, you better come up with something
to counter. I said that I'd heard
from people. Well, what is your fried chicken of choice?
Hmm.
I don't know that I have
one. I did have, what one I did have Browns recently
just offer one
for the sake of a talk show
Mr. and Mrs. Browns sold Browns
yeah
I have heard the recipe has changed
I've enjoyed
the shell station
Logan Wells Claylow
across from
across from Reed's the shell station where? What is it? The Shell Station? Logan Wells Clay Low Below. Across from Reeds.
The Shell Station where?
Across from Reeds.
That's a market. That's Tiger Fuel.
Yeah.
They've had good fried chicken there.
They've had good chicken.
Yeah.
One I've gotten there in the past.
I would say the Tiger markets do grab-and-go food better than many in central Virginia.
And I've been adamant on this claim,
and some folks have pushed back and said it's not a restaurant.
Of the non-corporate chain restaurants,
like if you're taking Starbucks out,
and you're taking Chick-fil-A out,
and you're taking McDonald's out,
I think those are the only three that can compete.
That Tiger Fuel, from a food and beverage standpoint,
top revenue generator in the category.
How long has Tiger been at that shell? Because they've had chicken and those- The potato wedges.
Potato wedges.
I know you so well.
They've had that stuff for a long time.
Janice Boyce Trevelyan says, Andrew, the University of Virginia is supposed to have
a walkout at 2 p.m. today protesting Donald Trump's victory. Are we not at the point,
this being Friday, the election was determined on Wednesday morning at 2.35. I give you that
many folks woke up on Wednesday. So let's say many folks realized that Trump won
in the 6 a.m. or 7 a.m. hour when they woke up on Wednesday, right? Because I would say not many
stayed up till 2.35 or 3 o'clock in the morning when Donald Trump was congratulating his posse,
Elon Musk, Dana White, Joe Rogan, and his very large family that was in attendance.
So you found out at 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning on Wednesday that he won.
For those that were melting down and were politically neutral with national topics here on the I Love Civo show,
for those that were melting down, you had Wednesday for the grieving process,
all of Wednesday.
Are you putting a timeline on the grieving process?
All of Thursday for the grieving process.
It's now Friday.
Is the grieving process...
Like, do you see the stuff that...
She's getting a second reference on the show today,
which is unfortunate.
Nakia Walker is still melting down on
her Facebook page about this?
I mean, you don't think this is
going to go on until...
When does the grieving process stop?
I doubt it's going to be
over before
Trump gets
reinstalled
in office.
You're saying the grieving process,
we're going to have to see and hear the grieving process through Hanukkah and Christmas.
At least.
Into New Year's.
Oh, your family, is your family politically divided?
Yeah, I'd say it's just like all families.
Yeah, we're politically divided.
Mine's not.
I can only imagine.
But your family is very immediate in number.
It's you, your mom, dad, and your two sisters.
Yeah.
You have five people in your family.
I would say that is a small family.
We do occasionally see aunts and uncles and cousins.
Is this the aunt that was chain-smoking camel reds and pounding Jim Jim Beam on the rocks or was that your grandma? That was my grandma. What was the grandma
story where she would go to the restaurant and she'd chain smoke? Didn't she flask the Jim
Beam? No. She had
it wasn't camels. It was, I think it was parliaments.
Pee fucks. And she had
somebody had made her a card that had her drink of choice and how she liked it.
A business card.
Yeah, more or less.
Okay.
And she'd get Jim Beam with a...
Jim Beam is gross.
I respect that your grandma did it, though.
I mean, she'd probably been drinking it for 50, 60 years.
The best way to drink Jim Beam is with...
Is in the sink.
I was going to say Coca-Cola.
Or you sneak an airplane bottle in your boot and you drink it at Scott Stadium with some of the $7 sodas that you're purchasing.
The prices are absurd.
Your grandma has a business card that says, Jim Beam, I want it this way.
Yeah.
But yeah, she'd get Jim Beam everywhere she went.
She'd have a Jim Beam before we went to the restaurant.
Then she'd have a Jim Beam or two at the restaurant before anyone was allowed to order their dinner.
And then she'd get mad at me when I took too long to eat.
She was a wonderful woman, though.
Ah, she sounds like a wonderful woman.
Judah's laughing at himself oh god
where were we
weren't we talking about
oh I was going to mention
that some people's
Thanksgiving and Christmas
are going to be pretty tense affairs.
Isn't it a common rule not to talk politics at the Thanksgiving table?
Do you think people actually follow that rule?
It's a rule because more people need to follow it.
My sister-in-law, I have two sister-in-laws.
Wait. Let me ask you this.
Is my wife's
brother's wife
my wife's brother? This is not a question for me.
Is my wife's brother's wife my sister-in-law?
Somebody's going to give us the answer. My brother's wife is obviously my sister-in-law.
But is my wife's brother, his wife, my sister-in-law?
Is that a sister-in-law?
Your brother-in-law and his wife.
My wife's brother's wife. Is that a sister-in-law? He would be your brother-in-law and his wife. My wife's brother's wife.
Is that a sister-in-law?
He would be your brother-in-law.
She would be, I don't know.
Yeah, he's my brother-in-law.
Is she my sister-in-law?
Anyway, this is my point.
We don't need to get in the weeds.
Someone's going to hold us accountable on that.
My sister-in-law who lives in California
is at the absolute 180 degree
opposite end of the spectrum of my dad.
Do you want to see a brouhaha brew of monumental proportions?
You have my sister-in-law and my father, her with a beverage in her,
my father emboldened after maybe walking around the block or two.
His favorite thing is walking around the block.
And something about politics come out,
you want to pop the popcorn and sit and watch the fireworks?
That'll do. That'll do.
There's going to be a lot of that.
The Thanksgiving rule of thumb is no politics at the Thanksgiving table.
Yeah, but you know that doesn't work out that way in practice.
Tina Breeden, welcome to the program.
Georgia Gilmer,
the grieving process is different for everyone
and some can hold on to each stage for a very long time.
Jason Noble says they always talk politics and religion
at the holiday gatherings.
See?
Jason, do you talk politics and religion at the holiday gatherings with a lot of brown liquor and a lot of red wine as well?
And Andrew Jaspen says the market at Exxon on Preston has very tasty chicken.
That's the one he's referring to.
Yeah.
That's a Tiger Fuel.
Wait, is that an Exxon now?
That's a Tiger, it's a market.
It's a Tiger Fuel brand.
Yeah. Oh,
we got into this conversation
by me saying,
Tiger Fuel,
the markets,
I think do more
food and beverage revenue
of any food and beverage business
in Central Virginia
except for
the Chick-fil-A,
Starbucks,
and McDonald's
of Central Virginia.
I would bet you the markets do more revenue than Burger King and Wendy's.
Well, is there even a Burger King left in Charlottesville?
There's got to be a Burger King left, isn't there?
Is there no Burger King in this Charlottesville area?
The one on Pantops is gone.
The one on Fifth Street is gone isn't there? Is there no Burger King in this Charlottesville area? The one on Pantops is gone. The one on Fifth Street is gone. Is the one on Fifth Street still there across from the Hardee's, where the Hardee's used to be? It's literally across from a market on Fifth Street.
Is that still there? That's where your parents live. You go down there all the time. And Jason
Noble says, hell yeah. We're talking politics and religion and holiday gatherings while pounding brown liquor and wine. Damn,
Noble, you got a crazy family. I like it. He probably has a family that's all on one side
of the aisle anyways. Yeah, is your family all on one side of the aisle? And Kevin Higgins says,
yes, the Burger King on Fifth Street is still there, and the Burger King on Route 29 is still
there. All right, so are we down to two Burger Kings in Albemarle and Charlottesville? I think
so. Are there two Burger Kings in Albemarle and Charlottesville? I think so.
Are there two Burger Kings in Albemarle County and Charlottesville,
ladies and gentlemen, the city of Charlottesville?
I think that's it.
That's a franchise and a brand that's eroded quickly.
It's gone by the way of Hardee's and Carl's Jr.
A lot of them are like that.
A lot of them are like that.
Wendy's is another one.
They just shut down the Wendy's on Pantops.
We talked earlier in the week that if you want to rent the Wendy's on Pantops,
you're looking at
it's a triple net lease
with rent,
taxes, insurance,
maintenance, and upkeep.
You're north of $15,000 a month.
And guess what?
That Wendy's on Pantops is attached to a market, Tiger Fuel.
Yeah.
Is the market at Tiger Fuel just shutting down
all of these fast food places?
Because I'll put it in perspective for you.
The market at Tiger Fuel, they're breakfast.
Wawa probably did some damage too.
Wawa and Sheetz have done some damage.
But there's a Wawaawa like literally a stone's throw
from where the Wendy's was.
Yeah, but I like to support the
Taylor Sutton
and his brother, Gordon.
They're local, locally owned.
The Tiger Fuel
markets, their breakfast
biscuits, I will stack up with any breakfast
biscuit that's out there. They're like two or
three bucks. I drive by the Bel Air on Ivy Road every morning, and it's extremely difficult for
me not to pull the car over and run in with my market rewards app and get a fried chicken
breakfast biscuit or a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. It's like three bucks, and it's already
pre-made. It's a grab-and-go. Then you've got their sandwiches that are less than $10.
My preference is the salted ham Keswick with the spicy mustard
on that tasty warm baguette, cold baguette, actually.
Very, very good.
Can we make a convincing argument that the Suttons
and their market brand
are putting out the fast food restaurants out of business?
Which fast food restaurants are doing well locally? Starbucks, certainly. In fact, actually, Starbucks from a stock price and
Starbucks from a parent company is not doing great. They just got a brand new CEO. Starbucks is not
doing great. A lot of people are saying that the Starbucks concept
is a thing of the past because the orders are entirely too complicated, and it's a menu
that has way too many options, almost like a Chinese food menu.
Yeah, I wouldn't know what to do there.
Chick-fil-A is crushing it. Raising Cane's is crushing it.
Really?
Raising Cane's is the alpha dog on the cock block. Here? Okay. Raising canes is the,
it can't be alpha dog, is the alpha hen, alpha rooster. Yeah. What is the most alpha of the
birds that would apply to the cock block on Charlottesville? Alpha rooster. Alpha rooster.
Is a rooster more alpha than the hen? Yeah. Okay. Do you not know how that works?
You want to explain it to the viewers and listeners?
So when a rooster meets a hen.
Raising canes is the alpha rooster on the cock block.
Absolutely.
Andrew says there's only one Wendy's left in Charlottesville.
Look at what's happening to fast food. And the intriguing
thing of what's happening to fast food in central Virginia, in Charlottesville and Almaro County,
is fast food is crumbling at a time of inflation when dollars are scarce. Think about that.
You would think at a time in inflation when dollars are scarce that the fast food would be
would get the tailwinds in the momentum but they're not it's not so cheap anymore it's not
so cheap like and that's part of it and did you go ahead like you know when i when i want uh you
know if if i want tacos uh it's really not any cheaper going to Taco Bell than it is actually going to a nice place like Guadalajara.
Mexicali Restaurant.
Maybe you can show us some things on screen for them.
Mexicali, Johnny Arnalis and River Hawkins,
partners of the program.
We're going to be at Mexicali Restaurant on Saturday.
We're going to do the Charlottesville Taco Tour on Saturday.
There's two couples that are staying with us from Manhattan, my wife's friends, husband and wife, husband and wife, two couples staying with us.
They kind of made this joke.
We're going to head down from the concrete jungle, New York, to Charlottesville for the long weekend.
We're going to head down for a relaxing weekend in the country.
That's what they call it.
A relaxing weekend in the country.
The country.
Literally the country.
And I didn't say this, but I wanted to say this.
I'm like, Marina, Angela, Walt, and Patrick,
we have a six-year-old and a 23-month-old
who wake up every single morning at 5.45 a.m.
They're going to get out of their bed at 5.45 a.m. and jump on your head and pounce on your chest.
If you think, we're going out tonight, my wife and I and these two couples, six of us.
We have reservations.
We're going to do a little bit of a bar crawl.
We've got a babysitter, a 16-year-old babysitter that's going to watch our two sons. You know how much
it's going to cost us to pay this 16-year-old to come and watch our two boys, one of them who is
going to be sleeping in his crib when he arrives? For how many hours? It's going to be 6 to 11 a.m. 6 to 11 p.m.
Okay.
6 to 11 p.m.
How much are we paying this 16-year-old who negotiated with us on rate,
which I kind of appreciated.
The businessman in me appreciated
that he negotiated with us on his babysitting rate.
I'm going to guess $300.
$300?
$300?
Are you epic crazy?
I don't know.
Viewers and listeners, can you tell Judah has no children?
From 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., we're paying a babysitter $300?
Five hours.
Judah.
I don't know.
Does Judah not have any children or is he not a business person?
Judah.
From 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., $300.
That's what?
$30 an hour?
Three.
30 times five is 150, Judah.
Oh, 150, okay.
I'm sorry.
You're right.
I don't know.
I honestly don't know.
Okay.
I don't know how much babysitters get paid now.
I'm flabbergasted by this here.
We're paying him $90. $90? $ know. Okay. I don't know how much babysitters get paid now. I'm floored and flabbergasted by this here. We're paying him $90.
$90?
$90.
Hmm.
For five hours of work.
$18 an hour.
I would think that's not bad.
Dude is sitting on our couch watching a baby monitor as our 23-month-old sleeps and has to entertain our 6-year-old from 6 to 8 p.m. for two hours
and then put him to bed.
And then the final three hours, he's sitting on the couch on our Wi-Fi
watching our Netflix or our Max or our Prime
and eating food in our fridge.
He's making 18 bees an hour for basically two hours of work and it's tax-free, cash in his pocket, in our fridge. He's making 18 bees an hour for basically two hours of work, and it's tax-free.
Cash in his pocket, in his hand. He's 16 years old. He's 16 years old. Then there's the Uber out.
The Uber out's going to be 30 to 40. So let's go 90 on the sitter. Let's call it, split the difference, 35 on the Uber out.
There's, I hope they know that Patrick and Walt and Marina and Angela, we're not picking up your
tab at dinner, the drinks. I'm buying them for my wife and I. There's the round of drinks before.
Let's call that, what, 30. Let's call that 30 bucks.
There's the meal.
Let's call the meal, what?
80 bucks after tip?
12% city taxes, Virginia taxes, federal taxes.
Let's say it's another 80 bucks.
Let's say we get a nightcap after dinner.
That nightcap's going to cost 35 bucks and then
we're now in supercharged rates for uber so that 35 on the way there is probably closer to 50 on
the way back 320 for date night 90 to the sitter 75 80 bucks round trip on uber the first round of drinks, the night cap, and then
dinner. Going to Mockingbird tonight in Belmont. Very much looking forward to Melissa Closeheart
and her menu tonight. That's a lot of money, would you not say? Yeah. And here's my point.
My point is this. We're at a time of incredible inflation, and the fast food restaurants seem to
be failing left and right.
I was reading Sean Tubbs' Substack.
Listen to this.
This is from Sean Tubbs' community Substack.
Geographically, 27% of Charlottesville families are struggling and 18% of Albemarle County families.
This is bananas.
One in four households in the greater Charlottesville area are struggling to pay their bills.
Listen to this.
Are you ready for this?
A deeper dive on this.
47% of black families in the greater Charlottesville area, 47%, one in two, cannot pay their bills.
35% of Hispanic families in the greater Charlottesville area cannot pay their bills. 35% of Hispanic families in the greater Charlottesville area
cannot pay their bills.
18% of white families
cannot pay their bills.
This is a study that was done,
a report that was done
from Piedmont Virginia Community College
and the Equity Center
at the University of Virginia.
47% of black families cannot
pay their bills and one in four 25 of families in the greater charlesville area
are struggling to pay their bills think about that yeah that is Terrifying. Terrifying. In the same sub-stack, you see that Amazon is further going balls to the wall deeper in Louisa County
with its $11 billion investment, doing more data centers.
You see the impact of the Northrop Grumman facility, quarter of a billion dollars,
where the average wage for everyone working at that facility in that Waynesboro area being at $100,000.
You see the University of Virginia and the Thomas Jefferson, what is it, the Jefferson Council?
They had a report on their website that said the University of Virginia is going to raise out-of-state tuition. It's going
to start flirting with $100,000 a year if you're out-of-state to send your kid to this university,
room, board, books, tuition, everything. HUD, the 2023 median family household income, $124,200. In 2022, it was 123,400. It's going up and it's going to go up some more. The car Q3 2024
report, you know what they said, Judah? Sales are slowing, but guess what? The values uptick 3%,
Q3 2024 versus Q3 2023. And that's compound
increase versus the massive
increase we saw during COVID and the pandemic.
It's bananas.
And yet the Wendy's and the Burger
Kings and the McDonald's
are failing.
And the point you made is right on
Jaspin, only one Wendy's left in Seville right now
where is that?
I think that one Wendy's left is right down the street from us
yeah, you're probably right
and they recently redecorated it
they remodeled that one
Wendy's is closing stores all across the board
Kevin Higgins in Greenwood
I rarely get fast food
but I did a couple of weeks ago on the run
all in on a combo of
burger fries and a drink, 12 bucks
I was afraid to ask for an extra ketchup pack
because I figured it'd be a bone 50 a pack
Georgia Gilmer, it's about being responsible
for the safety and care of your children
she's referencing the babysitter we got a German shepherd named Max Georgia Gilmer, it's about being responsible for the safety and care of your children.
She's referencing the babysitter.
We've got a German shepherd named Max.
Can't he take care of the 23-month-old and put our 6-year-old to bed?
Max, watch the boys.
I think that's how you get CPS called on you.
Probably.
My wife would never allow that.
Jason Noble says, we're actually pretty politically and spiritually divided, but the conversations are cordial.
That's good.
Sadly, the truth is a commodity, and if we can't tell our family the truth, then there's work to do.
Well said.
Yeah, no doubt.
Sadly, a lot of families are not like that.
Georgia Gilmer also says, I have champagne taste and there's no way in hell my dinner and drinks are going to be that expensive.
Rob Neal said, geez, Louise Judah, $300 for a babysitter?
I'm at $150.
Even $30 an hour.
You don't have kids.
I get it.
No, but I had, I babysat for someone once or twice
when I was in junior high or high school
that my sisters usually babysat for,
but when they weren't available.
And they gave me like 20 bucks an hour.
That's not true.
Judah.
It is true.
When you were in junior high,
that was...
The year was 1990.
Was it not? Yeah. It was 1990. You were not making 20 bucks
an hour to babysit kids in 1990. I was. In rural Maine. Is that when you lived in Maine?
Rural? Did you live in Maine? Yeah. Where'd you live in Maine? Portland. Okay. It wasn't rural.
Portland, Maine, you were not making $20 an hour in 1990
to babysit kids. Okay.
I push back on
that.
I don't care.
Janice Boyce-Trevillian
says, try the Ice House
in Gordonsville. Ice House in Gordonsville
is damn good. There was a little chitter chatter about a Craig Hartman Gordonsville. Ice house in Gordonsville is damn good. There was a little chitter
chatter about a Craig Hartman
Gordonsville ice house
having a part due
in Dairy Market
at South and Central with the closing of
South and Central.
I think that has fallen by the wayside but there
was some talks, some
backdoor chitter chatter with the
movers and shakers of both projects
about Craig opening up an ice house where South and Central was on Preston.
Interesting.
That is not materializing.
And Kevin Yancey says Chick-fil-A and Raisin Cane's are the market leaders when it comes
to chicken. I found those I found that commentary
about folks struggling to pay their bills sad
yeah of course
I mean it's just
25% of the families in our community
can't pay their bills
the numbers are going to go higher
they're going to get higher
Albert Graves says the grieving ones
will be grieving the whole time Trump is in office.
Albert Graves also says there's two Burger Kings, one on Fifth Street and one on 29 in the old giant shopping center.
One on Fifth Street and one on 29 North in the old giant shopping center.
And there's one Wendy's downtown.
Think about that.
Yeah.
No, the fall from
grace of that concept.
The next concept that's going to fall from grace.
It may come back around at some point. You know the next concept
that's going to fall from grace?
The Chick-fil-A concept, or the
Chipotle concept.
Oh.
Make the biggest burrito you can possibly
make. The Chipotle you can possibly make.
The Chipotle on Pantops.
I don't think I've ever had Chipotle.
You've never had Chipotle?
No. I'd rather go... We need to put that on the list
of things that Judah's never done.
I mean, really? Is that like...
Why is that a thing?
It wasn't until recently that you tried
Chick-fil-A for the first time.
Right? Right. It was that for the first time, right?
Right.
It was that like 45 days ago, right?
No, it was longer than that.
It's like 60 days ago.
Liza was still with us.
It was longer than... Rest in power, Liza.
It was longer than...
Yeah, it was...
Within the last six months, you tried Chick-fil-A for the first time in your life?
It may have been even longer than that,
but yeah, it was within the last year.
You've never had a photo with Santa Claus
in your entire life?
I think so.
He's never had a picture with Santa Claus
in his entire life.
Do you enjoy standing in line at a mall
waiting for a chance for your kid to sit on Santa's knee?
Absolutely not.
Absolutely not.
Why would you even make that a thing?
Because it's the thing you do as a parent.
It's called making memories.
It's the iconic image of your kid sitting on Santa Claus's lap. And you
then have one every year and you're able to do a flip book of their life that shows their growth.
Send them to everybody that really, really wants a picture of your kid.
My wife just hangs them in the house, dude. We're not sending them to everybody.
Okay. Well, she hangs them in the house. That's good.
And now they have these things called digital picture frames where you can upload the photos to frames.
Yeah.
And it changes in grandma's house.
I've got someone that's got like a digital photo TV.
It's like a full-size TV that just runs photos.
We have that.
It's just connected to your photos on your phone.
I think this was actually just made for photos. Okay. It just connects to your
phone. You can just do it that way. Yeah. We were going to talk about the stories of the year for
2024. I want to do that next week. I want you guys to help us with that show. They're using the cart.
Why are they doing that? For 2024, I want to talk about the stories of the year.
That's what we'll do next week.
UVA is getting...
I think UVA, if there's a top 20 list,
UVA has got number one, number two, and number three.
Probably.
I mean, pepper spraying the students,
the lying, the Craig Kent and the C-suite telling the staff to
change the medical charts and fraudulently bill people's Medicaid and Medicare and their
other medical bills.
Jeez Louise, or what's happened to Jim Ryan?
Which one is the bigger story of those three?
The complete about face of Jim Ryan,
a guy who starts his tenure at UVA
with his sleeves rolled up
and his tie and a half mask
perched at the edge of a desk,
helping navigate the University of Virginia
through COVID with videos in his office?
Or the Jim Ryan now that militarizes the state police and pepper sprays kids
refuses to release the reports of the murdered three UVA football players and
goes to bat for Craig Kent and Dean Kibbe despite proof of clear proof,
tangible evidence,
of fraudulent billing and medical charge changing.
And bullying and creating an environment.
Hostile workplace.
Yeah.
Good Lord.
But he runs with the students at 7 a.m. in the morning.
And he jumps in the pool when the swimming and diving team
win national championships.
Really?
Another story you better follow as relates to UVA is Carla Williams.
Is she going to be doing two national searches at the exact same time with the basketball team?
I watched the men's basketball team beat Campbell.
Congratulations to Ron Sanchez for his first victory as head coach of the University of Virginia men's basketball team.
Great victory.
I don't know about you guys,
but that game was entirely too close for my comfort.
Entirely too close for my comfort.
And the season gets difficult really soon, ladies and gentlemen.
Really soon.
Football teams got Pittsburgh on the docket.
Jerry Ratcliffe on the Jerry and Jerry Show said Tuesday
this could be their last chance to get a victory to close the season.
Then they got SMU,
Notre Dame and Virginia tech ain't going to happen.
Then if Virginia loses every game in football and gets their tails blown out
in Blacksburg,
the last game of the season,
like they did to close the 2023 campaign where they were humiliated at Scott
stadium,
Carla Williams is going to have to make a change with the head coach and the
staff.
He's making four4.5 million.
$4.5 million.
And he won three games his first year, three games his second year,
and four this year so far. And I understand he's gotten a free pass to a
certain extent because of the murder of the three football players. And he handled it with
grace and compassion. He was a fantastic leader. He certainly did. But this team is losing a
million dollars per home football game. Over a million dollars, more than a million dollars.
Yeah. That's a lot of money. No doubt.
Did a good job today. Thank you. Friday edition.
The I Love Seville Show.
I think we made the donuts today.
Did we make the donuts?
Do you remember that ad?
No.
You don't remember that ad?
Which ad?
When you wake up and say,
it's time to make the donuts,
you're completely...
Is that an ad?
Yeah.
Let's see.
I'm looking it up.
I can't believe that you've never...
I thought for sure...
Tell us what the ad is.
I mean, it's...
Is it Dunkin' Donuts?
Yeah, it's this bald guy with a mustache.
He's getting out of bed at the, you know what, crack of dawn.
And he gets up and he's like, time to make the donuts.
This is a commercial from 1984.
Yeah.
I was a kid.
Okay.
I mean, what do you expect?
All right.
I do not remember this.
Oh, man.
I will watch it on YouTube.
It's time to make the donuts.
So when my wife and I get up in the morning when the alarm clock rings, I mean, heck, we're not even waking up to alarm clocks anymore.
We're waking up to our 23-month-old yelling.
They haven't reset your internal clock yet?
Pretty much they have.
The other day we were trying to stay up to watch election night,
and it got to be about 10 o'clock.
I'm like, it's time for me to go to sleep.
Wow.
And I used to be the guy that stayed up until 4 or 5 in the morning every night.
It's time to make the donuts.
So when we wake up in the morning, we're doing short ball.
Short ball guy.
Like Mario.
Time to make the donuts.
All right. Time to make the donuts. All right.
Time to make the donuts.
Judah taught me something today.
Thank you for that, Judah.
No problem.
Judah Wittauer.
Show it to Lauren.
I'm sure she'll appreciate it.
I'm sure she will.
I actually will show it to her.
Judah Wittauer, Jerry Miller, the I Love Seville Show.
We'll give some love to Charlottesville Sanitary Supply.
Yeah.
Charlottesville Sanitary Supply. Give. Charlottesville Sanitary Supply.
Give them some love on screen.
Let's see.
60 years and counting.
Dennis Cantedon on YouTube says,
Who wouldn't want Judah's juice on Friday before the weekend?
I'm not going to respond to that.
You're such a sicko.
I'm just joking. Was such a sicko. I'm just joking.
Was that a sicko comment?
Was that taking it too far?
Was that an X-rated joke?
I was joking.
Depends on how sick you are.
He's very mischievous.
Terrible, terrible person.
Especially as a kid.
All right, we're out of here. Judah Wickhoward, Jerry Miller,
The I Love Seville Show. Thanks for joining us, guys.
So long. Oh, gosh. Thank you.
