Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the Jerry and Jerry Show, guys. My name is Jerry Miller. Thank you kindly for joining us on the I Love Seville Network. Goodness gracious, a lot to talk about on the program today. Brent Pry, the head football coach at Virginia Tech, his seat is so hot. They are 0-2 in Blacksburg. Vanderbilt, a team that is a team you should reckon with, dashes the hearts of hockey fans.
Starting point is 00:00:30 play by herself with Jerry Rackleff on Brent Price's future. Of course, we're going to look at Virginia football. Tony Elliott and this football team were a whiskers hair away, ladies and gentlemen, from a critical victory in Raleigh. Unfortunately, a trend that is all too common in Charlottesville and all too common for this fan base, a third quarter for Virginia football where they were absolutely controlled and absolutely demolished
Starting point is 00:00:55 that reflected or indicated how the game would go. We'll talk about that with Hootie Rackleaf today. We'll talk Chandler Morris. He had a hell of a game. He threw a costly interception. How do you grade the gunslinger Chandler Morris that clearly is the key cog for this Virginia football team? We'll talk defense. They could not, ladies and gentlemen, stop NC State in this contest until the latter stages of the fourth period.
Starting point is 00:01:20 What happened with this vault, this Virginia defense that on paper has a lot of talent? We're going to talk on this program. What's at stake for Virginia as they head into the matchup? against William and Mary. Goodness gracious, will fans show up against the William and Mary tribe? That's a topic I want to cover on the program today. We'll take your questions. Anywhere you are watching, your questions are welcome on the program. Judi Gett, if you can, my Facebook page up and running in live. If you can go to the studio camera and welcome the Virginia Sports Hall of Famer Jerry Hootie Racklep to the show on a program that continues to generate positive feedback.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Hootie Rackleaf, good morning to you. Good morning to you. And an interesting weekend for sure. Absolutely an interesting weekend. We start with scatter shooting with Hootie Rackleff. Where would you like to begin? Well, you know, I just thought it was unbelievable that Virginia was able to move the football the way they did for most of the game and then down the stretch
Starting point is 00:02:19 they get inside the 30 three times in a row and walk away with nothing. and the defense finally stiffened at that point, gave them opportunities, but they just couldn't score. Reverted back to the same old problems we've seen so many times before, but it was theirs for the taking and could have built incredible momentum and generated incredible enthusiasm with the fan base had they pulled it off. and we talked about the dangerous of playing this game all season long
Starting point is 00:02:59 when you didn't really have to schedule an opponent like that. Yeah, if you win, you get a lot of benefits, but if you lose, what does it do to you? I don't know. We'll find out. I totally agree with you. I do like the fact that Chandler Morris, even though he made a rookie mistake in his six years as a quarterback,
Starting point is 00:03:22 owned it. He didn't make any excuses. He said, I should have thrown the ball away and he should have. He had plenty of time and plenty of plays left to get that ball in the end zone, but at least he owned it and didn't run away from the media after the game. You know, the interesting thing about Chandler Morris, I don't even have much beef with how he played. I thought he played a fantastic game. He did play fantastic. One bad mistake, a critical point of the game. I think the accountability, if that's the word, has many more notches on the priority list or the pecking order when it applies to where Chandler Morris stacks up on that order. First thing that comes to mind, and I think this is fair. I understand this is week two, but I think this is fair because
Starting point is 00:04:10 of the trend in the history. Virginia outscored in the third period. It was 21 to 7 in the third. they're going into halftime with a 24-14 lead and the momentum on the road. They come out of halftime, and their, ladies and gentlemen, outscored 21 to 7 and down 35 to 31. This is a trend with Coach Tony Elliott and is three years in change, and Charlesville is the head coach. Yeah, it's a disturbing trend, and something that they need to address now. They can't continue along that path and expect to do anything important down the road. But I don't know if it's a halftime lack of adjustments or if the other team makes better adjustments and then Virginia doesn't adjust to that.
Starting point is 00:05:03 Certainly NC State made some changes and they had to know what was coming with Hollywood. They were going to give the ball to Hollywood some others. as many times as they possibly could. Maybe the best player on the field. Of course he was going to get the ball. He was tremendous. And their quarterback, C.J. Bailey, did an outstanding job as well, finding receivers. And I still can't figure out what happened to Virginia's defense, the first three quarters of that game.
Starting point is 00:05:36 It's almost like they weren't even there. Well, why don't we start there? I mean, three periods. Your phrase, they weren't there. They didn't show up. They didn't get off the proverbial bus. What did you see? You know X's and O's as well as anyone.
Starting point is 00:05:49 A lot of missed tackles. The run fits were off for sure, and they got no pressure on Bailey. And I know he's a mobile quarterback and all that, but at some point, through blitzing schemes or something, you've got to find some way to put some pressure on these quarterbacks. and there were only a couple of hurries, I think, no sacks. And, you know, they brought in guys specifically to put pressure on the quarterback, and so far they haven't gotten their money's worth.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Chandler Morris finishes with a prolific stat line in his second game in a Virginia uniform. This tailback transfer, ladies and gentlemen, from North Carolina Central. looks like the real deal. Virginia, an underdog in this contest, easily could have won the contest. It's interestingly, Vegas, very accurate with how they projected the line would fall. Four-point game, I think when the, at kickoff it was a three-point line, depending on where you shop, two and a half to three points, finished at four. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:05 Crazy how good Vegas is when that, with that information, that line setting. Now you got William and Mary. I'm questioning whether 30,000 people will even be in attendance against the tribe. It's that challenging 12 p.m. kickoff against a nondescript opponent that no one has really any allegiance to, an opponent that doesn't travel super great
Starting point is 00:07:28 with the William and Mary tribe. Tony Elliott, his mood after this NC state loss. He was obviously I think he knew what they had let slip through their fingers, and I think he felt for his team that they had, for the most part, played a pretty good football game on the road against a team that was favored, and at times dominated, particularly on offense,
Starting point is 00:08:04 and just couldn't get it done. and same old story and I think he realized like everybody else what this game meant and what it could have meant had they pulled it off and an opportunity, I think, to have gone 4 and O
Starting point is 00:08:23 build up incredible enthusiasm and momentum going into that Florida State game later down the road. Do you take a glasses half full approach or a glass is half empty approach after two weeks of football? Well, it's halfway there, that's sure. I don't know if it's empty or full.
Starting point is 00:08:47 Offensively, I think you have to be encouraged that this team can score points. They've scored, what, 48 and 30-something the other day, but
Starting point is 00:09:02 defensively, they've they've got work to do Saturday was a big disappointment and as much as they've improved on the offensive side of the ball which has been a thing that has held them back
Starting point is 00:09:19 in the previous three seasons not being able to put points on the board people expected that kind of performance from the defense too to be able to dominate and I mean you score as many points as they did Saturday you should be able to win and I know that especially with a 10 point lead at halftime yeah there's a lot of shootouts in modern day football and
Starting point is 00:09:44 you've got to score five or six touchdowns to usually win anymore but you would if you just get a little bit of help from your defense you walk out of there with a completely different attitude and our conversation and everybody else's conversation changes dramatically if they just get a little help from the defense. Tim Bates watching the program, he said, Good Morning, Fellows from Evington. Tim Bates watching in Evington, Virginia. He says he agrees 100% with our take on the quarterback play.
Starting point is 00:10:21 Chandler Morris has made one real mistake in two games. It just happens to be the mistake he made in week two. maybe cost the team an opportunity to win. I still see so much hope and potential with Chandler Morris, especially with the uncertainty at quarterback over the last two seasons with Musket and Calandria. Chandler Morris is clearly a talented college football quarterback that understands nuances, understands schemes, weak spots of defenses, just as a very heady guy. I think Virginia football has got, and they said this in the summer, and I didn't believe them because they thought it was hype,
Starting point is 00:11:05 Virginia football might have one of the best tailbacks in the Atlantic Coast Conference and this transfer from North Carolina Central Hootie. Yeah, Keith Gaither told us that a few weeks ago, and I think some of us were skeptical, too, because... I was very skeptical. How good could this guy be? Right, right. But apparently he was overlooked in the recruiting process.
Starting point is 00:11:26 I think that came during COVID, and so a lot of people probably didn't do their homework on him or whatever, but they certainly missed out, but my goodness, the way he played Saturday, some of his runs were spectacular, and looking around the ACC, right now he is as good as any running back in the conference, I think, and has the numbers to prove it. Virginia's got William and Mary on Saturday, 12 o'clock kick, ACC Network, Mike London, rendezvous in Scott Stadium. What do you make of the William and Mary matchup? Well, it's a game that Virginia should win. There's no question about it. I think even Mike London would admit that. I have all the respect in the world for Mike London. He's a great guy.
Starting point is 00:12:21 He's a great guy, Mike London. I enjoyed covering him when he was here. as an assistant and then head coach. Wish things had worked out differently from Michael London. Yeah, I wish they had. Just a terrific guy. I mean, I got to know him really well during his time here. And he coaches his butt off.
Starting point is 00:12:45 They're one-in-one coming into this game. They won a close game over Maine and lost a close game to Furman. He has a quarterback who was their leading passer. Well, obviously, they're leading passer, but the leading yardage guy passing and running the football, I think, in the Furman game, which they barely lost, 23 to 21. But they'll come in here and play hard. I just think that there's a difference between FCS,
Starting point is 00:13:23 most FCS teams and teams like Virginia that has a big budget to spend on football players. And I think it's hard to overcome that disparity. But, you know, they'll come in and play hard, but Virginia shouldn't have any trouble winning this football game. This is not just ladies and gentlemen, a reunion or a rendezvous for former Virginia head coach, Mike London. It's a reunion and rendezvous for Rossi Dowling, a defensive back that's a star in Virginia history that had time in the National Football League. He's the co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach with the William and Mary Tribe. Keenan Carter, a defensive lineman for Virginia football, who's a defensive line coach
Starting point is 00:14:11 and recruiting coordinator currently for William and Mary, Darrell Blackstock, one of the best linebackers I would say in Virginia history, special teams coordinator, outside linebackers coach for Mike London, Perry Jones on this William and Mary coaching roster, a name that a lot of folks may remember if you follow 757 football, Virginia Tech football. Brian Randall is on this Mike London coaching roster. Coach London has got a who's who of Commonwealth football talent on his coaching tree in Williamsburg. He does, and I think he's had even a few more that have scattered around the country and still coaching. I think Matt Johns was formerly on his staff.
Starting point is 00:15:00 I think he's on Broncos staff now out at Utah State. Yeah, Mike is very loyal to his former players and vice versa, and it's great to see those guys coaching. 100%. 100%. I love seeing the coaching trees, ladies and gentlemen, kind of develop and mature in college football and into the various programs. Let's put in over under a 30,000 in attendance against William and Mary. Where's your money? Yeah, well, like you said, a noon game probably doesn't help in that respect. Noon game, William and Mary, done travel that well, coming off against the loss to NC State.
Starting point is 00:15:47 one in one on the season. Right. It's going to be challenging to have a big crowd, I think, because of that, I think, the one in one tag more than anything else. Had they won Saturday, I think it would have been worth another five to seven thousand people maybe, but I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:17 Virginia football fans are pretty fickle, and the bandwagon, there's no bandwagon at this point, I don't think. But it'll be challenging to get a really good crowd there Saturday, I think. They have William and Mary, then Stanford. Right. He's not a very good football team. Stanford's not a good football team. Expectation, especially at home, is you should be handling William and Mary and Stanford. That puts Virginia at three and one.
Starting point is 00:16:47 going into a Florida State matchup against a Seminoles football team that is incredibly talented. I'll put in perspective how talented Florida State is here in a matter of moments. They're a top 10 football team. The Florida State football.
Starting point is 00:17:01 They look like the Florida State of Bobby Bowden through two weeks. Granted, it's two weeks. But I think those two weeks have merit considering week one was a victory against Alabama. They hung 70 plus points in week two.
Starting point is 00:17:17 I mean, 70 points, ladies and gentlemen, for this Florida State football team, 77 to 3. They hung 31 on Alabama, which says something right there. So expectation, probably losing the Florida State, although anything can happen. That puts you at 3 and 2 through the first five weeks of the season. And then Louisville, who beat JMU. I was talking to Rob Neal in the wait room. I think Rob's watching the program right now. He's a massive JMU fan.
Starting point is 00:17:47 I watched a little bit of that game. He said that the JMU quarterback play, Rob Neal, was a bit shaky against Louisville. But the Louisville football team is extremely beatable. I would say now you would have Virginia losing that game to Louisville to go three and three because it's at Louisville. They're on the road. Yeah, I think Virginia's only one once ever at Louisville.
Starting point is 00:18:09 Right. So three and three at the halfway point of the season, Hootie. Where do you want to go with that? well that that's uh i mean that that's uh i mean that that's probably where most people thought they would be i believe it's three and three at that point um could have been four and two possibly but uh that uh that leaves you with uh i don't know you is the fan base excited at that point or does their interest wane because that's about the time that the basketball exhibitions will be getting started, I think.
Starting point is 00:18:56 That'll be, well, I'm not sure that there, that is on October the, what, 4th? What, the exhibition for basketball? No, the Louisville game. The 18th or I'm against Washington State. What's that homecoming? Yeah, I think that's about the time I think the exhibition start or maybe the following week when they play at North Carolina. I know they host Villanova the night before in the exhibition game.
Starting point is 00:19:31 So I don't know, it's going to be interesting to see how the fan base reacts to all this. If they could pull off an upset, I almost think they have a better chance at Louisville than they do at home against Florida State. Oh, 100%. 100%. Yeah. So, I don't know. It's going to be interesting to see how people react to that.
Starting point is 00:20:03 It's hard to predict. This team's going to have to now steal a win with that lost NC State. Yeah. Steel one of those wins that we didn't think was going to go their way in the preseason. And they've, you know, the last two years, they've had excellent chances to beat Louisville. They've blown it both times. I thought last year the coaches lost the game with some poor decisions. And then the year before at Louisville, they were dominating for a while.
Starting point is 00:20:30 And then once they had that devastating injury to the running back, who we had on our show. Is that Paris? Yeah, Paris. All went out kind of out the window. But they easily could have beaten Louisville both those seasons in a row. And maybe this year they'll finally get lucky on that. One of our favorite fans, Cliff Daisy, is watching on the eastern shore.
Starting point is 00:21:08 He says, good morning from the eastern shore, disappointed in the game on Saturday. third quarter was a killer. He's also disappointed in so many night games because he works every Sunday morning and can't stay up late Saturday night because of work. And he says with the Virginia Tech conversation when you talk Brent Pry, imagine if O'DU beats the Hokies in week three.
Starting point is 00:21:29 We will talk Brent Pry. Well, I think his seat as hot as any in college football right now. I just saw something yesterday that I don't actually remember the source, but it's somebody who puts odds on what coach in the country's going to get fired first. Is he at the top of the list? He was at the very top of the list.
Starting point is 00:21:49 It wasn't even close between him and number two. Yeah, the loss to Vanderbilt might have been the nail. They looked awful in the second half of that game. The offense, I mean, we could segue into this as you're putting, you know, headlines on screen rotating us in here. Brenn Pry and Virginia Tech's offense looks pitiful. I mean, 24 to 11 long. against South Carolina at a neutral site in Atlanta.
Starting point is 00:22:15 Lose to Vanderbilt, 44 to 20, ladies and gentlemen. Lose to Vanderbilt. Have Old Dominion at 7 o'clock. This is a big ball game for the Monarchs. The Monarchs are going to look at this as if it was like their Super Bowl. You've got a Sun Belt football team in Old Dominion that's going to come to play for this.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Virginia Tech better not look past O'DU. I don't know much about O'DU. I don't even know what. what their record is. They're one-in-one. They beat North Carolina Central, who is what, Taylor's old school, right?
Starting point is 00:22:48 Right. 54 to 6. They lost in week one to Indiana, led by the former JMU coach. Close game, 27 to 14. So ODIU is one-in-one right now. Well, if Pry can't get his
Starting point is 00:23:07 team believing again. If he starts 0-3, does he get fired before week four? Oh, wow. I don't know. There were probably people screaming for his head in second half last week. I mean, they just looked awful. Not just offense. Their defense couldn't stop anybody.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Vanderbilt was just gashing them right between the tackles all night long, and they couldn't stop them. It's going to be tough for him to turn that thing around. Yeah, if they lose the Old Dominion, my goodness, who knows? And I guess I'm assuming that game's in Blacksburg. In Blacksburg. It'll be interesting to see what kind of fan turnout they have. Well, they still continue to sell out.
Starting point is 00:23:58 I mean, you know. But that doesn't mean they'll show up. Tusha. They did show up against Vandy. They did. They had a great crowd, and it was interesting seeing all those people fall out. of file out of their lane stadium in hordes as the game went on. There's some kind of sociology or anthropology experience or experiment or research study that
Starting point is 00:24:23 needs to happen here. Virginia Tech football struggles mightily. UVA football struggles mightily. Fans go to Lane Stadium, sell out, one of the most intimidating home field advantages in the nation. UVA, half empty, more people. chilling in the parking lot than watching the game in the stands. There's got to be some kind of anthropology or sociology study there. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:52 And it used to be that way of Virginia Tau. That was my first job was covering Virginia Tech and it was hard getting, it was hard. They didn't draw well. They didn't win much. Neither did Virginia back in those days. But that was pre-Bill Dooley.
Starting point is 00:25:10 And I think once they started having some success, particularly with Frank Beamer, and then Mike, Vic, when they got Michael Vick, that changed everything. That changed everything. That made them a top 25 team, a top 10 team. Beamer Ball came into existence. Lunch Pail, Bud Foster. All that. It got their fan base excited. more than, I mean, they really didn't have much to get excited about up until that point in time.
Starting point is 00:25:49 And so they poured all their resources and all their enthusiasm into football. And, you know, up until Beamer had success, George Welsh was dominating the state of Virginia, and Scott Stadium used to get filled every weekend, and there was incredible enthusiasm. Scott Stadium was a tough place to play. I still remember asking Bobby Bowden on the ACC football tour in 1996, August of 1996, about that game the previous fall, previous November at Scott Stadium, when Virginia was the first ACC team to beat Florida State during that dynasty. And he said that was the loudest crowd that he had encountered in his career.
Starting point is 00:26:51 And that says something because there was only 45, 47,000 people in there. That was capacity. I'm sure there probably had a lot more people on the hill than they may have been counted. But still, that's not nothing like a... 80 or 90,000 or 100,000 seat stadium, which he had played in. So, you know, we saw the tables reversed over that course of time when George left and Al got off to a good start but couldn't keep it going. And then Virginia Tech did.
Starting point is 00:27:32 They kept it going until Beamer retired soon. I think their fan base is probably a little more rabid, a little more dedicated. Maybe football, I think, is probably a bigger deal down in that part of the state. For years, I think, a lot of the high school stadiums in some of the smaller towns. In that part of the state, there's nothing else to do, and people showed up in hordes. And I think maybe football just means a little bit more down there than it does up here. Rob Neal watching the program. This guy knows college football, like Judah Woodcower knows denim and the dog days of summer.
Starting point is 00:28:23 Rob Neal watching the program, that's a compliment to you, Judah. You wear denim in the dog days of summer. Wasn't wrong with that. No, I'm trying to weave him into the conversation. It wasn't a dig, Judah. Just a little poking little locker room fun here. Rob Neal says O'DU's best player medically retired this week, middle linebacker,
Starting point is 00:28:44 but the Monarchs will be pesky. Interesting game in Lane Stadium. He says, go Monarchs, and he says, now I feel dirty because he's a JMU fan. William McChesney says, My Hokie son is not enthused about Virginia Tech this year.
Starting point is 00:28:59 Comments coming in left and right, as we highlight Logan Wells Claylow watching the program, but comments coming in left and right, about Tony Elliott and the coaching. Mark Coleman, for example, this past Saturday was vintage Tony Elliott. That's from Mark Coleman. I'm going to highlight this.
Starting point is 00:29:18 Was it a 47-yard miss field goal? Yep. Will Bettsch? Bettsch. Yeah. I didn't have a lot of confidence on Will Betritch making a 47-yard field goal. I don't know how you felt.
Starting point is 00:29:31 Second thing I'm going to throw to you is, the fourth down, the play call to go right on the line instead of just go up the middle seemed questionable to me as well. Yeah, and I think it was behind an unbalanced line if I were... 100% if I recall.
Starting point is 00:29:48 Yeah. And I just... As far as the field goal goes, his leg was supposed to... He told us he had worked hard and making his leg stronger and he had more range than he had the year before. He's made, I think his career long is 49.
Starting point is 00:30:12 I may be wrong about that, but it's questionable. But his other miss was from 51, and I didn't have much confidence in that kick. I kind of thought he might make the 47-yarder, because most college kickers can do that. on a pretty consistent basis. But that makes you wonder going forward if a game is on the line, you know, how much confidence are they going to have in doing that or maybe trying to get a first down somewhere. But, yeah, the play call, I mean, it makes sense if you're going to do that,
Starting point is 00:31:00 go behind an unbalanced line because you should. should have an advantage there, but the blocking just wasn't there. Our NC State just made a good play and anticipated it coming. But you would think that I still like fourth and one. I still like a good quarterback sneak. Right. Especially with a six-three. I mean, what's the backup quarterback?
Starting point is 00:31:26 I know they don't have the. The push push right now. But I still think Chandler Morris was good enough to sneak and get one yard. Especially with his craftiness with working the snap count and his nuance with managing how the ball is snapped. He's wily. I mean. And we saw the week before they had that jumbo package in on the goal line where they brought in extra linemen to block. And, you know, why can't you do that there?
Starting point is 00:31:59 if it works on the goal line it should work right there with all that beef to run behind and you know wildcat it to Taylor put them both like they did in in the red zone and down the goal line the week before put Morris and Taylor in the backfield and Wildcat Taylor but it wasn't much imagine imagination there, for sure. A gentleman on your Facebook page, this is the second time he's commented in back-to-back weeks, and we welcome you to
Starting point is 00:32:37 the Jerry and Jerry Show family. His name is James Madison. Great name. I love it. He says, don't you guys think that they should have run the ball with a little over a minute to go to run time off the clock? If you score there and Morris does not throw the interception,
Starting point is 00:32:53 NC State still has plenty of time left to score. So multiple people questioning the Tony Tony Elliott play calling, game management, decision-making here? Yeah, well, I think Kitchens is probably the one that made that call. I think the only time that Tony Elliott is involved in decision-making on the offense, it's whether to go for it on fourth down or not. I mean, they may have some discussion on play calls, but ultimately, I think Des Kitchens
Starting point is 00:33:25 is the one that makes the play call. but I thought they really wasted an opportunity there because, again, they had a first down at the 12, right? At the time of the interception, there was still 62 seconds left, I think, in the game. So you had, and you had timeouts, so I have to question throwing it on first down there. I think I'm not so worried as much about the clock as I am as getting in the end zone because, you know, again, NC State didn't have any trouble moving the football and you certainly were putting yourself in jeopardy if you did score that early.
Starting point is 00:34:12 But, you know, what was the rush in trying to score on first down? I don't understand that. I think they could have done a much better job managing that situation and what they did that was that was kind of a risky pass it's a wheel route by the back coming out of the backfield they had a guy open across the middle I don't think Morris saw him and Morris said he didn't want to throw against his body so that was the obvious throw to make He just shouldn't have thrown the football. He should have thrown it into the stands because it was well covered.
Starting point is 00:34:56 Chandler Morris throws that football away nine times out of ten. Yeah, I think he does nine times out of ten. He tosses it and they probably go on and score one way or the other. Still could have gotten another first down if they had really needed to. but I would have preferred running the football down there to get it a little closer and didn't see what happens. But again, I didn't like the way that whole last series turned out with the potential with plays and time in their favor.
Starting point is 00:35:35 John Blair watching and Stanton. Jerry, Jerry, any updates on Xavier Brown? I could not tell from the broadcast, but it looked like he was holding his hand after a tackle. also Mike London is a great guy I wish he had worked out here and he also wants to point out Rob Neal you'll like to hear this John Blair on LinkedIn and Stanton
Starting point is 00:35:53 he says while it's a smaller stadium JMU 25,000 JMU has sold out for years with football oh they have an outstanding program that doesn't surprise me at all they're actively trying to expand the stadium
Starting point is 00:36:10 expand resources I think they probably will No update on Brown will probably hear well we may hear something today it's up to the coaches whether they want to report that or not because except for conference games they're not obligated to give an interview report but he usually does anyway so we'll probably hear something this morning later this morning
Starting point is 00:36:38 I can't remember the rest of the Was there another part of that question? No, you handled it. You handled it. William says this. Seems like the problem is Des Kitchens. They were calls last year to replace Des. We said in the, I asked you this multiple times in the summer, when's Tony Elliott assumed the play calling?
Starting point is 00:36:58 Here we're in week two, and in week two, dubious, dubious play calls. Questionable play calls, I guess I should say. Yeah, well, I thought for the most part, Des called a pretty good game. I mean, they were, and a lot of it was. Chandler Morris because how many times we see him drop back, particularly in the first half, on the
Starting point is 00:37:21 third down, and they needed you know, anywhere from five to 12 yards or something for first down and he kept looking and looking and staying in the pocket and was incredibly efficient. Well, 13 out of
Starting point is 00:37:37 18 on third down conversions in the first half alone but I thought for the most part he called a pretty good game I just had some problems with them down the stretch when they have the ball
Starting point is 00:37:55 with first downs at the 30 at the 8 and the 12 and walk away with zero points had they kicked a field goal earlier than all they would have needed was a field goal to win it at the end wouldn't have to worry about throwing into the end zone on first down, but they
Starting point is 00:38:17 went probably with a walk-off field goal. But they chose not to kick it, and here we are. Let me answer you this question. Through two weeks of the season, what's Virginia's brand of football? I think, you know, they strive to be balanced. I'm not sure that that's quite what it is although for the first time in a long time they have a good running attack
Starting point is 00:38:48 thanks to Jamari Taylor that kid is legit but if you've got a weapon like Chandler Morris and experienced quarterback like that and a fleet of receivers you've got to throw the football so they've been
Starting point is 00:39:08 pretty good good at both. They've been pretty balanced, about as balanced as you can be in modern day football, I think. But I think that should make their offense better. If they can run it, that helps Morris become a better, more efficient passer because there's less pressure on him to produce every play. And they are keeping him clean. He's not having to run for his life like Calandria did the last two years. how what's the difference between a morris and a calandria decision making experience decision making there's a lot of similar on paper on paper very similar i think calandria was a little bit better of a runner yeah and probably still is i don't know how much i think calandria might even had a slight i don't know if you agree or disagree with a slightly more lively arm as well
Starting point is 00:40:02 you think morris has the more lively arm uh i don't know that we've seen seen him enough to tell that at this point, but he is a pretty strong arm. He can make the deep throw. Colandria and UNLV beat UCLA last weekend. I don't know if that's a very big deal because UCLA's not very good. But I think a lot of his decision-making, he can make all the throws. I think he's cooler in the pocket. He doesn't get happy feet. And he finds his receivers.
Starting point is 00:40:43 You know, a lot of people questioned that six foot would he be able to find them? He's got no problem with that. He has no problem whatsoever finding receivers downfield. And he was, he picked NC State apart first half. And some in the second half. It's just a shame that they couldn't pull it off. Anthony Calandria, and why don't I highlight Calandria's line through two weeks, 49 completions, 65 attempts, completion percentage of 75%.
Starting point is 00:41:14 That's a lot higher than it was here. 647 yards passing, 10 yards per completion on average, six touchdowns, just one interception for Anthony Calandria, and racking up yardage, 30 carries for 175. yards, 5.8 per tote, and one trip to pay dirt while rushing the football. Anthony
Starting point is 00:41:39 Calandre is the clear-cut starter of UNLV and he's posting all conference numbers through two weeks. Yeah, and he wasn't the starter going into the... He had a fight for this job. Yeah. He took it in the first week. He sure did. He outperformed
Starting point is 00:41:55 the other guy and last week obviously played off the charts, but Yeah, he was a good quarterback. I wish him well. He's in his third year starting now, so he should be better and be making better decisions and throwing less interceptions. His percentage has gone way up.
Starting point is 00:42:17 I think he was in the, his best completion percentage was 62%. He's at 75 and change. That's what I thought, yeah. So that's a major jump. And I know he went to the quarterback school. the quarterback school down in Tampa with John Gruden this past summer and I'm sure that helped him some but I'm not surprised that he's playing well and you know it's a shame that he left here but I can't blame him for leaving under those circumstances when he
Starting point is 00:42:55 was benched for the last game of the season last year so Coach Elliott might have been surprised by that, but I wasn't surprised at all. I kind of expected it after... How he was treated. After that, yeah. But I still think Morris is the better quarterback in the long run, and we'll see. Well, and Calander is something we should highlight is the offensive line was a point of concern when Calander was here. Oh, it truly was.
Starting point is 00:43:26 If he had this offensive line, his numbers would be better. Right. 100%. Kevin Yancey, awesome weekend for him. Florida State rolled. He's a four state fan. Virginia Tech lost to Vanderbilt, and Florida lost to USF. Florida has now fallen out of the top 25 rankings. USF's a giant killer. Is it Miami this week?
Starting point is 00:43:50 USF is playing Miami. Miami's the top five in the rankings? I think so. I'll confirm the rankings here in a matter of moments. I think they might be fifth. I think they are fifth. confirm that. I'm calling that up right now. Miami's in the rankings, top 25. South Florida's
Starting point is 00:44:06 rank now, too. Yep, right, right. Gosh, look at who do you. And Houdi didn't even have a computer in front of them. I'm at least looking on the internet and a computer. Miami is five in the AP, six in the coaches. Florida State,
Starting point is 00:44:22 10 in the AP, 12 in the coaches. Clemson, 12 in the AP, 11 in the coaches. And they've looked awful. Clemson has looked awful. They have looked awful. They have some injuries with their wide receiving core, but they don't look like the Clemson of yesterday year.
Starting point is 00:44:36 South Florida is ranked, 18 in the AP, 23 and the coaches. The question I have for you is ACC related. You have three teams ranked in the top 25 in the Atlanta Coast Conference. You also have Georgia Tech, Louisville,
Starting point is 00:44:54 and SMU in receiving votes. At one time, SMU was ranked in the top 25. This Atlantic Coast Conference has got some depth, and it's got some talent atop the conference, and it may even have some talent in the middle portion of the conference. Yeah, I think the ACC's
Starting point is 00:45:10 dramatically better this year. It's no question. SMU lost in overtime to Baylor, which one of their whole-time rivals, so that game could have gone either way. But the ponies are for real. They're still a good football team. Louisville is
Starting point is 00:45:26 a little bit of a mystery team. I don't know if we've seen enough of them to find out just how good they are. But yeah, the ACC is better. I think Georgia Tech's better than what they're being given credit for. Clemson, I don't know what's going on down there, but they were looked in the first half, they were, it was stunning, losing to Troy State, what was it, 17 to 3 or something at the half?
Starting point is 00:45:57 Right. That's mind-boggling. to me. How could that possibly happen? But Florida State seems to be for real. Miami seems to be for real. And that's certainly something that the ACC is wanted for ever since they brought Miami into the league. Needs them. Clemson, NC State, Miami to be top 25 teams. They do. Begging for them to be that good. Cal Golden Bears, the only reason I bring up Cal is because they're on Virginia's schedule. 2 and 0 on the season. a win at Oregon State and a win at home against Texas Southern.
Starting point is 00:46:35 They host Minnesota on the 13th of September, ladies and gentlemen, which is Saturday in a 10.30 p.m. Eastern Conference kickoff time on ESPN. 7.30 on the West Coast. So that's a marquee matchup. Well, Cal, they were kind of like Virginia last year, and they lost, I think, four or five games. Cal was in a lot of contests. Yeah, really close games. and had a pretty good quarterback. They weren't that bad a football team.
Starting point is 00:47:05 They were much better than the record showed. So it'll be interesting to keep an eye on them as we go forward. Cal is Virginia's matchup. Absolutely, hoody. Cow is Virginia's matchup, ladies and gentlemen, the fourth to last game in the season. I bring up the cow Golden Bears, because perhaps us included,
Starting point is 00:47:24 we thought that was a chalk win, a victory we could chalk on the board. Cal's a team to potentially keep an eye on here. You've got a press conference at 1130. We've got about four minutes and change here before 11 o'clock departure. He will be at the Tony Elliott press conference at 1130 today. What's going to be the mood of the press conference? What's Tony Elliott going to be focused on?
Starting point is 00:47:47 What's he going to be relaying to the media? Yeah, he'll be focused on this week for sure. I'm sure he's flushed last week as much as it haunts, coaches to lose, but they learn how to flush those things pretty quickly and move on. You have to do that. And so all of the focus is on William and Mary and just trying to get back in the wind column again and try to build off the success they had on offense and try to figure out what in the world's going on on the other side of the ball so it won't happen again.
Starting point is 00:48:24 How do you use a game like William and Mary? Don't show too much, show focus on what you need. I mean, how do you use it? I think you show whatever you need to win, but you try to get these guys who haven't played together very much as much playing time as possible and maybe experiment a little bit on defense on some things, maybe some blitzes or something to try to generate some pass rush
Starting point is 00:48:52 because they're going to need that moving forward. But they've got a shore-up stock. stopping to run and I imagine that'll be one of the focuses of this week's practice. What's in the hopper at Jerry rackliff.com? A lot about this week and then we have a rare press conference with Ryan Odom tomorrow which was called out of the blue today. So that'll be fun. Talk a little hoops.
Starting point is 00:49:20 They just offered Hakeem Olajuwon's son yesterday. I don't know what their chances are. what their chances are of getting in because Houston is involved where his dad was a star and a lot of interaction between Virginia and Hakeem the Dream
Starting point is 00:49:39 back in the 80s some momentum incredible games between those two and I saw I covered all of them in Seattle, Houston and Tokyo so some games I'll never
Starting point is 00:49:57 forget, including the one where Hakeem elbowed old impolinesis in the throat and didn't even get thrown out of the game for it. But a lot of big moments with that family in Virginia basketball, maybe it'll be a good moment for a change. I'm looking forward to it. I was on Jerry rackliff this morning. Jerry rackliff.com is the source for anything UVA related. Follow hoody on Twitter. Man does a hell of a job. He's going to be at the Tony Elliott press conference in T-minus 29 minutes. The Jerry and Jerry Show, wherever you get your podcasting and social media content and features of Virginia Sports Hall of Famer, that's a household name in Jerry Ratcliffe.
